The Suicide Squad is “insane.” That’s the most common word critics are using to describe the latest DC movie. The first reactions arrived on social media this week, and the over-the-top violence and comedy are the unanimous highlights of the supervillain team-up. Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn is said to be the perfect director of the material, bringing the best of both his Marvel and his Troma aesthetics together. That means a fun ensemble and hard-R gore. If you think you know what to expect after the last Suicide Squad film, you’re wrong. Here’s what critics are saying about The Suicide Squad:How hyped should we be for this movie? The Suicide Squad is TOTALLY INSANE and insanely cool. What it is: This hit dramedy with critics and audiences alike from creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft follows a teen quartet played by relative newcomers Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, and Diego Tinoco as they navigate high school hallways set in a very real inner-city world. Why you should watch it: What’s groundbreaking about On My Block is its articulation of everyday coming-of-age hiccups (first loves, first heartbreaks, shifting friendships, growing parental pains, party culture, and more) through the lens of a world not often depicted on screen. With a talented and diverse young cast and set in the heart of inner-city Los Angeles, the series’ transports its audience to the confined intimacy of a single American block and all that entails. Its fourth and final season premieres March 11 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first three seasons)亚美官网app“It was one specific panel in Marvel Spotlight #13 where Daimon is reading his mother s journal, and he s in his full-on cape and bare chest with the pentagram and everything,” he recalled. “And he s crying because he s reading the story of his mother and how the mother met the father and sort of who the father really is … and that s a lot of emotion. That s a lot of baggage.”Zbyszewski, growing up in the Catholic tradition while reading the early Helstrom appearances, became enamored with the baggage.“This was a very emotional story about a couple of kids who had the worst dad ever,” he said. Plus, the thrill of reading about the son of Satan offered his comic book diet a sense of the taboo and danger. “You go, ‘Ooh, that s dark.’ And then when you pick it up and you re a little bit older, you re like, ‘Oh, OK. I kind of see this [emotional tale].’”The sense of cool and the family underpinnings made Helstrom a must-make concept.2. Helstrom Is An Unlikely Family Drama(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Though the series begins with Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Satana renamed for television) having spent years apart and estranged, the show leans into the notion of family very quickly thanks to the unique dynamic between Ana (Sydney Lemmon) and Chris Yen (Alain Uy).“[My] chosen family is Chris Yen, Lemmon said during our time in Vancouver. We met in the foster care system and just fused and became best friends. [He] became almost more of a brother to me than Daimon and then down the road, business partners.”Chris and Ana are introduced with a peek at their lavish life, including San Francisco apartments and a thriving antiquities dealership. To Uy, that clean, ordered world is the best place for Chris. The character is “a very in-control type of person and likes things in a specific way. Some ways that is the yin into Ana s yang,” Uy explained. That yang includes a handful of supernatural abilities Chris may or may not be aware of — “I think he s got some knowledge,” Uy teased.“The night you meet her, she is hosting a huge auction and you encounter a powerful business lady,” Lemmon said. “Then everything goes sideways, and she gets pulled away from everything and has to deal with her past, which is something that she s been running from.”(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Which leads us back to Daimon.“[We’re] ripped apart at a young age,” Lemmon explained. “So we ve led completely separate lives and have totally different bags of trauma, and when we come together, it s really, really hard to find the common ground.”Perhaps the siblings can find common ground with their mother, Victoria, who is still alive in this version of the story, but not entirely herself. Marvel — whose name did not get her the job, by the way — tackles a difficult mix of mental illness and not being alone in her head. She called the work “actor s candy,” adding “this landscape of the Marvel universe, and the powers and the things that they re wrestling with, they re so huge. But as theater artists, we do the Greek [plays], and we do Shakespeare, and we are used to taking these massive cosmic issues and domesticating them. And that s something that I think we get to do very interestingly in this Marvel Universe.”From what we ve seen of the show, these cosmic issues will lead Daimon and Ana back to the pain caused by their home life with Victoria and their father.3. The Show Can Deviate From the Comics(Photo by Bettina Strauss/Hulu)Like Victoria’s continuing presence in the mental ward of a Portland area hospital, Helstrom takes certain liberties with the comics. Ana, for instance, is quite different from her curvaceous and horn-headed comic book counterpart – Lemmon recalled thinking Oh! OK, um, so we re going to be using wigs, prosthetic body parts apparently when she first saw art of Satana – and a couple of the characters more tied to Ghost Rider comics add a generational aspect to the show.In the series, both Caretaker (Robert Wisdom) and Dr. Louise Hastings (June Carryl) have been involved with the Helstrom kids for a long time. Dr. Hastings essentially raised Daimon while Caretaker looked after Ana from afar. Their roles here are quite a departure from Marvel lore — Hastings is a fairly obscure name from an early ’90s comic book series — but Zbyszewski viewed them as different ways Marvel characters can be used in a television adaptation. Caretaker, who is part of a secret society holding the line against evil in the comics, featured a natural element in the original storytelling” the producer knew could fit into his plan for Helstrom. For his part, Wisdom views the character as a cross between “Nick Fury and Indiana Jones” and thinks Marvel fans familiar with the character will be surprised by how much he cares for Ana.“They’re going to be taken with the relationship,” he said. “She’s like a bolt of lightning, and I’m trying to wrestle with [that].”Wisdom referred to it as a “dance” which may, in the end, lead to a surprising change in Caretaker himself, but also teased, “Who knows what Caretaker’s real motivation is?”(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Dr. Hastings “fit in a little bit differently” according to Zbyszewski.“Sometimes the backstories in the comics are not deep enough or rich enough to mine to give your characters arcs,” he explained. As a result, Dr. Hastings benefited from a major expansion, although elaborating might constitute a spoiler. We can say she is the head of the hospital’s psychology department and one of the few people Daimon trusts.“There s a practicality to Louise that I think gets a workout, Carryl said back in February. When something kind of goes off the rails and into another realm, there s a Huh. OK. I m going to have to put that in the hopper, and it s going to pop for a [moment], and we ll deal with it later.”As a result, the character lends the show an added sense of reality. When we asked Carryl about that aspect of Dr. Hastings more recently, she said the supernatural is “not old hat yet” to the character despite raising a child who can summon hellfire.4. This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Another Round, The Borrowers, Captain America 4, and Cleopatra Jones. This WEEK S TOP STORYCAPTAIN AMERICA 4 IS OFFICIALLY IN THE WORKS(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)First off, we absolutely need to put a big, fat SPOILER WARNING here for the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If you haven t seen or finished that show yet, just stop here and enjoy wondering how Marvel will bring back Chris Evans as the title character. For those still reading, because obviously, that spoiler warning totally worked, you now know that the star of Captain America 4 will be Anthony Mackie, formerly known as The Falcon (or to some, Black Falcon), who took over as Captain America by the end of the show. Captain America 4 will very much be a creative continuation of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as its showrunner (and head writer) Malcolm Spellman will be co-writing the film with Dalan Musson, one of the show s staff writers. Technically, no casting has been done yet for Captain America 4, but Anthony Mackie is almost certainly a sure thing, and some of the other of the show s characters, like Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl), Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) could also return. Captain America 4 also doesn t have a director yet, but many people online are suggesting that the show s director, Kari Skogland, should return to helm this feature as well. For more insight into where Captain America 4 might go next, check out this interview with Spellman. Marvel Studios has not yet announced a release date for Captain America 4, but it s unlikely to be anytime before 2023.Other Top Headlines1. THE GODZILLA VS. KONG MONSTERVERSE WILL CONTINUE, POSSIBLY WITH SON OF KONG (Photo by Everett Collection)Once upon a time, when Legendary Pictures first struck a deal with Japan s Godzilla home company Toho to make English-language films, it was for four movies, of which Godzilla vs. Kong (Certified Fresh at 75%) was the fourth. It was for that reason that many fans expected that the Monsterverse was probably going to end there (and also due to fears that COVID-19 would keep the box office down). The pandemic almost certainly did leave a pawprint on the box office, but 6 million and counting (globally) is still pretty great, and on HBO Max, Godzilla vs. Kong also beat the first week viewing numbers for the heavily promoted Zack Snyder s Justice League. Given all those factors, Legendary has indeed begun talks with director Adam Wingard about a sequel that is rumored to be titled Son of Kong, which would be a direct reference to the 1933 sequel (Rotten at 42%) with a very different premise than we re likely to see (since Kong: Skull Island did not feature the Carl Denham filmmaker character). Of course, the tease of Son of Kong also suggests the existence of a Mrs. Kong. Whatever it ends up being, this sequel is at least a few years away, as Wingard is expected to direct both his Face/Off sequel and the live action ThunderCats before it.2. LEONARDO DICAPRIO TO REMAKE ACADEMY AWARD WINNER ANOTHER ROUND (Photo by ©Samuel Goldwyn Films)As with pretty much every year of the Academy Awards, this week s ceremony had both snubs and surprises, but people tend to talk less about about the winners that weren t so surprising. For example, in the Best International Feature category, Thomas Vinterberg s film about Danish day-drinking educators, Another Round (Certified Fresh at 92%), was expected by many to win, and it did. Within hours of that win, Leonardo DiCaprio s Appian Way production company swooped in and acquired the rights for an English-language remake. DiCaprio is not currently attached to star in the remake, but there s definitely a good chance that he could (presumably as the lead character played by Mads Mikkelsen in the Danish version). He also was not the only Hollywood star who tried to land the Another Round remake, as both Jake Gyllenhaal and Elizabeth Banks also made bids on it. Another Round was actually called Druk in Denmark (Danish for Drunk ), so it s possible that the remake could follow suit and take the title Drunk as well.3. LOVECRAFT COUNTRY WRITER WORKING ON CLEOPATRA JONES REMAKE (Photo by Everett Collection)The early 1970s explosion of Blaxploitation movies featuring African American leads is often called a genre, but it was more of an industry umbrella under which films of many different genres were produced. Consider, for example, the 1973 film Cleopatra Jones (Fresh at 79%), which was basically a spy spoof (the villain was Shelley Winters as an international opium drug lord called Mommy, and Cleopatra Jones was a secret agent). The news first broke in 2017 that Warner Bros. had started development on a Cleopatra Jones remake, but it took three and a half years for the studio to make the next move by hiring a screenwriter. That job has gone to Ihuoma Ofordire, one of the writers of the series Lovecraft Country on HBO (also a corporate cousin of Warner Bros). Warner Bros. has not yet announced who might star

To no one’s surprise, Frozen II led the Thanksgiving holiday with a five-day haul of 6.3 million, with .3 million of that coming over the weekend. That is the eighth-best second weekend of all time, wedged between Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast (.4 million) and, well, Disney’s Incredibles 2 (.34 million). Overall, the film has grossed 7.6 million in 10 days, which is the 15th-best ever for 10 days, between Captain America: Civil War (5.96 million) and The Dark Knight Rises (7.11 million). It is the 25th film to have grossed over 0 million in its first 10 days of release. Only three of those films (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Furious 7, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) failed to reach 0 million total. Amongst the 12 other films to have million-plus second weekends, only one of them (Avengers: Age of Ultron) failed to reach 0 million total. However, only two of those movies opened in the holiday season (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar). Frozen II has already amassed another 1 million worldwide for a total of 8 million as it marches to become another billion grosser for Disney.Fresh Surprise: Knives Out Shows Original Films Can Still Murder At the Box Office It wasn t a total surprise for us at RT – we had placed it in the top 5 holiday earners in our winter box office preview – but Rian Johnson’s Knives Out surpassed all tracking service expectations by earning .7 million since opening Wednesday. The .7 million it earned over the weekend puts it amongst the top 20 Thanksgiving holiday weekends ever – and it is just the fifth film not rated “G” or “PG” to be on that list. Some 61 films have opened in November and grossed over million in their first five days; only four (Pokemon: The First Movie, Dumb and Dumber To, The Muppets, and Unbreakable) failed to reach at least 0 million total. That means Knives Out could join Hustlers, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Us as the only films not based on a previous film or property to reach that milestone in 2019.The Top 10 and Beyond: Queen and Slim Gets a Solid Start, Word-of-Mouth Boosts Beautiful Day(Photo by © Universal)It was back and forth over the holiday for third place, but James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari won the race with .22 million over the weekend and .99 million for the five days. No film opening in November to have grossed at least million in 17 days has failed to reach 0 million. Ford v Ferrari currently stands at million, but its magic number is still going to be around 0 million globally to find its way into profit. With just over 3 million internationally, it is still less than 60% of the way there.Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood got the word-of-mouth bump over the holiday we were expecting. It is now outpacing Roland Emmerich’s Midway, which just passed the million mark this weekend. Gothika, Starship Troopers, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms are the only November films to have million after 10 days and not finish with at least million. Midway is looking to join that list given its third weekend (.95 million) was less than what those three films earned in their third weekend. Meanwhile, the Mr. Rogers film, which stands at just over million to date, had a better second weekend (.8 million) than any live-action film in November to have million or less by day 10 of wide release (aside from Jingle All the Way). This suggests that a final gross over million is still very possible for the million-budgeted film. The other newbie of the week was Melina Matsoukas’s Certified Fresh Queen Slim, which grossed .7 million over the weekend and .8 million over the full holiday. That is 0,000 more than what Widows had last year in its first five days before ultimately finishing with million. Last week’s cop thriller, 21 Bridges, is up to just .45 million after 10 days, which puts it in After the Sunset/Delivery Man territory. Its second weekend (.82 million) was about million less than the Vince Vaughn comedy and 21 Bridges may be up at around just - million when it leaves theaters. Finally, Todd Phillips’ Joker spent its eighth straight week in the top 10. It has passed 0 million domestic, .048 billion worldwide, and is Warner Bros. fourth-highest grossing film of all time. Joker also passed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to become the 35th highest-grossing film of all time. This Time Last Year: Another Possession Could Not Scare Ralph From Top Spot(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)It was the weekend after Thanksgiving so grosses were down a bit, but still a lot of people were going to the movies. The only major new release was The Possession of Hannah Grace, which opened in seventh place with .4 million. Ralph Breaks the Internet was again on top with .56 million, passing the 0 million mark. The Grinch moved up to second with .92 million, enough to pass the 0 million line. Creed II fell back to third with .63 million and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald had the steepest fall in the top 10 (61.3%) to .36 million. The top 10 films grossed a total of 6.19 million and averaged 61.4% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 6.98 million over the weekend and averaged 67.3% with critics. On the Vine: A Balloon Adventure and an Acclaimed Romance Set to Light Up Indie Box OfficeThe weekend after Thanksgiving is usually a dead zone for new releases and indeed only one film is going wide and that is the oft-delayed animated film from STX, Playmobil: The Movie. The million production was moved from January to April to August and then into December. It has grossed just .4 million in international waters to date, and may have trouble matching that here. In limited release, try to catch The Aeronauts on the biggest screen possible as it is not often you get a chance for a hot air balloon adventure with Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne – especially one that s Certified fesh at 84% on the Tomatometer to date. Even more acclaimed is the 98%-rated Portrait of a Lady On Fire. The beloved French romance was a hit at Cannes this year, winning Best Screenplay, and it is also nominated for Best International Film at the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards. The Full Top 10: November 29-December 1Frozen II (2019) 78% – .25 million (7.57 million total)Knives Out (2019) 97% – .02 million (.7 million total)Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92% – .22 million ( million total)A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% – .8 million (.31 million total)Queen & Slim (2019) 83% – .7 million (.81 million total)21 Bridges (2019) 54% – .82 million (.46 million total)Playing With Fire (2019) 24% – .2 million (9.2 million total)Midway (2019) 42% – .96 million (.28 million total)Joker (2019) 68% – .98 million (0.6 million total)Last Christmas (2019) 46% – .9 million (.66 million total)
Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. So, this week and next, we re going to review 12 of the year s top stories, presented to you in monthly chronology. The year-in-review begins with the Fresh Developments of 2020, and we ll continue next week with the year s Rotten Ideas. JANUARY: TAIKA WAITITI CONTRIBUTING TO THE MARVELOUS FUTURE OF STAR WARS (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel)Lucasfilm and Disney obviously wanted to continue making Star Wars movies after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but the who (and presumably the what ) has changed repeatedly in just the last couple of years. For example, former plans for Star Wars Story movies like Boba Fett and Obi-Wan were shelved (in favor of the now planned shows on Disney+), and there was also a period when Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing a future Star Wars trilogy, as well as another project from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. If one wants to find a single clear trend for Star Wars, a strong argument can be made for the influence of Marvel. That influence continued in January when we learned that Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) had reportedly been approached by Lucasfilm about developing his own Star Wars movie. Waititi s Star Wars project was confirmed in May with the news that he was also writing the project. In related news, this was also a big year for Waititi s next Marvel Studios film, Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), including the casting of Christian Bale as the film s villain, who we now know will be Gorr the God Butcher. Waititi also teased in April that Thor: Love and Thunder will feature what he s calling space sharks. We re still waiting for clarification on what exactly that means, but sure, why not? You do you, Taika Waititi.FEBRUARY: JAMES MANGOLD TO REPLACE SPIELBERG ON INDIANA JONES 5 (Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the obvious focus was on the Star Wars franchise, but Indiana Jones was another long-running property that Disney acquired at the same time. By that point, Paramount had already been developing an Indiana Jones 5 for a few years (basically since the 2008 release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Certified Fresh at 78%), which continued until the film finally received a release date of July 19, 2019. That obviously didn t happen, with the release date finally landing on July 29, 2022 (16 days after Harrison Ford turns 80). With Steven Spielberg still working on his West Side Story remake (12/10/2021), there had been recent speculation about Indiana Jones 5, which was cleared up back in February when Spielberg dropped out of directing it. Instead, we learned James Mangold (Logan, The Wolverine, Ford v Ferrari) was in talks to direct Indiana Jones 5, with Harrison Ford still attached as the film s star. The decision to hire Mangold to direct what will probably be Ford s last film as the adventuring archaeologist also inspired comparisons to Mangold s work on Logan, Hugh Jackman s last film as Wolverine.MARCH: ANYA TAYLOR-JOY TO PLAY FURIOSA IN MAD MAX: FURY ROAD PREQUEL(Photo by Linda Kallerus/Netflix)Everyone has had their own personal way to pass the time during their COVID-19-related quarantines, but apparently, directors like George Miller chose to push forward on a new film, specifically searching for the new star of his prequel to the 2015 fan favorite Mad Max: Fury Road (Certified Fresh at 97%). Furiosa will reportedly depict what Charlize Theron s character was doing years before meeting Mad Max, so Miller was looking for a younger actress for the role and Skype-tested various actresses to that end. The one name that was floated out back in March was 23-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy, who first came to most people s attention as the star of The Witch and Split before enjoying a big 2020 in the Jane Austen adaptation Emma., the Marvel movie The New Mutants, and the smash hit Netflix series The Queen s Gambit. Miller hopes to start filming Furiosa sometime in 2021 after he wraps filming of his current project, Three Thousand Years of Longing, starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. In October, Anya Taylor-Joy was indeed confirmed to star as Furiosa, along with Australian star Chris Hemsworth (Marvel s Thor, obviously), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played both Black Manta in Aquaman and Doctor Manhattan in HBO s Watchmen (our apologies if that s a spoiler for a show that aired a year ago). Hemsworth will reportedly play a character called Dementus who has a huge silver scar on his face, and Abdul-Mateen will play a character called Pretorian. Those names seem to confirm that the film will indeed be set in post-apocalyptic times and not, as might have guessed, before the end of the world. Tom Hardy is not expected to reprise his role as Mad Max, as his character would be much younger, and also because Max and Furiosa had not seemed to know each other in Fury Road. You can read here what Anya Taylor-Joy said in October about being cast as Furiosa, as well as an editorial about what George Miller might have planned for the prequel.APRIL: DISNEY AND AVENGERS DIRECTORS DEVELOPING LIVE-ACTION HERCULES REMAKE (Photo by ©Walt Disney Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Of the 10 animated features that Walt Disney Pictures released in the decade that began in 1989 with the release of The Little Mermaid, four of them have had remakes in recent years (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and just this year, Mulan), and two currently in the works (The Little Mermaid and The Hunchback of Notre Dame). We re probably never going to get a live-action Rescuers Down Under, so of those ten, that just leaves Pocahontas, Tarzan, and Hercules, and after this week, we can whittle that number down even further to just two. Back in April, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures is now developing a live-action remake of their 1997 mythological animated musical Hercules (Certified Fresh at 84%). The Hercules remake has two direct connections to Marvel Studios in the form of producers Joe and Anthony Russo (the directors of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame) and screenwriter Dave Callaham, who is currently working on Marvel s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (5/7/2021). It is reportedly unclear if the remake will have musical songs from the original or if it will be a non-musical remake a la Mulan, and we don t yet know who will direct it (although there have been some rumors). Another question left to be addressed is where this puts Marvel s own version of Hercules, who is one of the earliest members of the Avengers (#11, just before Black Panther and Vision), and one of the longest-running team members as well (his longest stint was in the 1990s). Will Disney s Hercules kill any chances of Marvel s Hercules from ever joining the MCU, or does the involvement of the Russo Brothers suggest some sort of overlap?MAY: TOM CRUISE TO BE THE SOLAR SYSTEM S FIRST OUTER SPACE MOVIE STAR (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)It was probably always inevitable, but Hollywood is finally making its way to outer space, and it s going to be done by one of the industry s biggest stars. In May, we learned that Tom Cruise and Elon Musk s Space X were collaborating on the solar system s first narrative feature to be filmed in outer space. The action-adventure will not be part of Cruise s Mission: Impossible franchise, and no studio is currently attached. NASA was also quick to announce this week that the project will also film on the International Space Station, which suggests that Cruise may be spending some time on the station himself, possibly for an extended period, even. A few weeks later, we learned that Cruise will be reuniting with director Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked on both Edge of Tomorrow (Certified Fresh at 90%) and American Made (Certified Fresh at 86%), for the film. (They re also both committed to an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, by the way.) Incidentally, Cruise and Liman had previously been developing a movie called Lunar Park (about renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source ), but this new project is reportedly a separate film.JUNE: DISNEY AND LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA GOING TO COLOMBIA FOR ENCANTO (Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)After attaining fame with Hamilton on Broadway, Lin-Manuel Miranda expanded into film and animation, including work with Disney on Mary Poppins Returns (in which he co-starred) and Moana (he co-wrote the songs). We ve also known for a while that Miranda has a project with Sony Animation called Vivo (6/4/2021), and in June, another new project with Disney Animation was revealed. Talking to Good Morning America, Miranda mentioned that he is spending his quarantine-at-home time working on an untitled Disney animation project set in Colombia. Reportedly, the project will be directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, who worked with Miranda as the directors of Moana (Certified Fresh at 95%). This news came just a few days after this Disney blog reported that Miranda, Howard, and Bush were working on a Disney musical called Encanto (Spanish for charm ) about a young girl from a magical family who does not have any magical powers herself. Walt Disney Pictures has scheduled Encanto for a theatrical release on November 24, 2021, which is currently also the release date of Ridley Scott s Gucci, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver.JULY: RYAN GOSLING AND THE INVISIBLE MAN DIRECTOR SET TO COLLABORATE ON WOLFMAN One of the last movies to enjoy a decent theatrical run in early 2020 right before COVID-19 cast its shadow on the rest of the year was Universal Pictures remake of their classic monster movie, The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91% ), directed by Leigh Whannell, the Australian producer, director, and screenwriter who got his start collaborating on the Saw with future Aquaman director James Wan. That film happened after Universal Pictures scrapped their previous Dark Universe plans to reboot their classic monsters, which would have included Johnny Depp starring in The Invisible Man and rumors of Dwayne Johnson possibly starring in Wolfman. Despite opening just as the pandemic kicked into high gear, The Invisible Man was otherwise a financial success, so Univeral Pictures is moving forward with similar reboots, including Wolfman. In July, the news broke that Ryan Gosling was Universal s top choice to star in Wolfman, and seemingly confirming that Gosling has indeed signed on, the studio also began talks with Whannell about writing and directing the film to continue the thread between The Invisible Man and their ambitious werewolf movie. Leigh Whannell and Ryan Gosling have reportedly wanted to work together for some time.
(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Do you like your Harry Potter films light and frothy – like the early years? Or do you prefer your Wizarding World all broody and dark – like the later years? Perhaps your Potterverse sweet spot is in the middle films, like Goblet of Fire, which expertly blend both, capturing Harry, Hermione, and Ron at a time when they’re still innocent enough to be awed by the magic around them, and when He Who Must Not Be Named is moving from lingering threat to fully formed strange-nosed wand-swinger.Whichever way you lean Potter-wise, you’re likely to have some strong thoughts about our ranking of the Harry Potter films. Our list orders the movies by their Tomatometer score, which reflects the percentage of critics that gave the films a thumbs up. Not surprisingly, all eight Harry Potter movies score very well according to the Tomatometer, with each earning a Certified Fresh score of 77% or above. (It is the Ravenclaw of movie franchises.) Final film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 comes in at number one with a whopping 96%, with fan fave Prisoner of Azkaban close behind on 90%; in last place is Deathly Hallows – Part 1, which suffered – according to critics – from an inevitable feeling of being unfinished. In the latest episode of our new podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), we’re going big. Like, troll-rampaging-in-a-boarding-school-bathroom big…. Or giant-spider-getting-freaky-in-the-woods big. Joining hosts Jacqueline Coley and Mark Ellis for this Triwizard Tournament-level task is Syfy and Syfy Wire’s Jackie Jennings, host of the “Who Won the Week” podcast and Potter-head who definitely thinks we’re wrong on this one.
