Tell us about that first phone call with Michael Hirst when he told you that you were coming back. What was that discussion like?Clive Standen: It was great, because it was more about the discussion before I left. At the end of season 4, we talked about the death of Ragnar, and I was concerned because I was going, “Well, most of my storyline is entwined with Ragnar’s. It’s very much the saga of Rollo and Ragnar at the moment, and then the next stage is the sons of Ragnar, it’s the Golden Age of the Vikings — and I’m not sure how Rollo fits in with that.” And [Hirst] said, “Yeah, you’re right,” and I said, “Well, I don’t really want to stick around in the show if I’m doing a disservice to the character and the audience.” And he said, “You’re right.” It was literally like we cleared the air because he was going, “Well, this is a problem. We don’t want to lose you, Clive, but it’s called Vikings.” He has to introduce these sons because we’re losing a major character in the show. We need to create some more characters that people can root for and some new stories and alliances, and they’ll see the saga of the Vikings in the Golden Age — we go all sorts of places. So we put Rollo on a hiatus, and that was nice.I mean, Taken came along for NBC, and I did that and that kept me really busy, and a couple of other films in between. And then Michael said, “Don’t worry, I’m going to find the most opportunistic moment to bring you back, and it’s going to be like the old Rollo: He’s going to be like a volcano all over again; he’s going to erupt and everyone’s going to have to deal with the consequences.” And that’s what he did. He rang: “Look, you’re coming back, I’m sending you the scripts tomorrow.” We had a little talk about it, and it was everything I wanted. It’s a fiery return, and there’s so much going on that we were able to add to what the real Rollo was doing in history. In the later life of Rollo, there were historical documents that recorded that he was questioning his own mortality, and he lined up 100 Christian soldiers to be slaughtered in the town square and at the same time sent 100 pounds in weight in gold to the Christian churches. This was certainly a man who was worried about the gods he’s worshiped his whole life accepting him into Valhalla, so he’ll appease them by sacrificing 100 soldiers and at the same time sending 100 pounds in gold to the Christian church to kind of hedge his bets. We didn’t want to do it like that. We didn’t want to make a big thing of it, but we thought we’ll pay homage to that. So Rollo is coming back, and he’s dealing with his past wrongs.Obviously he has a whole [group of] people that he looks after now, that he rules over, and they come first. As the Duke of Normandy, he’s matured. He has responsibilities and he’s a leader. So the politics of the situation come first, and that’s what gives him the opportunity to come back and make an alliance with Ivar. But it was really in the end what Vikings is always about: It’s about family. It’s about all those emotions. It’s about coming back and opening up those old wounds and hopefully having people that may sew them up for him. He has no idea if that’s going to happen, and that’s what plays out in the episode. That’s the real reason for his return: facing his demons head on.(Photo by Jonathan Hession/History)A lot of people may see the fact that Rollo gave Ivar the assist as a betrayal to Lagertha and Björn. Is there more than meets the eye to the situation? That’s the thing: Whenever Rollo comes back for a new season, Michael and I always want to make people think — to expect the unexpected. He is coming back, and he’s not team Lagertha and he’s not team Ivar. He’s purely team Rollo, as he’s always been.Ivar is very much the runt of his brothers. He was born disabled. He was kind of written off as a child by his own father; Ragnar left him in the wilderness with an ax to fend for himself. The brothers were teasing him. He’s risen up against all odds and learned the hard way, and now a lot of what drives him is that.Rollo is no different. If you think about Rollo being the shadow of his brother, who went on to become the King of Sweden and do so much in the Viking mythology, he always felt like he was second best. When you compare Rollo and Ivar, Rollo has been there, done that, and got the T-shirt. He’s now an old, wise dog. So there’s nothing Ivar can throw at Rollo that he hasn’t seen coming way down the line. It’s a chance to school this little runt [laughs]. But he also offers Lagertha and Björn something that he feels that they can never, ever turn down.So is he really team Ivar? He needs a reason to go there in person. He has responsibilities now as the Duke of Normandy, he’s become — in history, and it’s no different from our story in the series — stronger than the king of France. So he needs a reason to go and help Lagertha and Björn, but his alliance is obviously with his own people. He needs to provide what’s more beneficial for the people of Normandy, and that’s always going to be the case. There has to be an alliance with Ivar because Ivar is the King of Sweden. His position as the Duke of Normandy is a transition from the savagery of the Vikings to a more sophisticated European place of power. Has Rollo missed the fighting and savagery?Definitely. I’m not sure if it made the cut, but I hope it does: There was a scene we filmed where Rollo talks about an old Berserker he knew — which is obviously Rollo — that missed the battles. That’s what he was best at. He would gather all the pots and pans and weapons and anything metal in his domain and carry them to the top of the hill and threw them off the top so they clattered and crashed and smashed against the rocks below, just so he could hear the sounds of battle one last time. And, you know, Rollo is really speaking about himself. I don’t think it makes it into this episode, but that was a real sense of getting under the skin of Rollo for me, because very rarely does he actually talk about how he feels. There was a scene late in season 2, I think, where Floki’s character is talking to Björn about Rollo and says something along the lines of, “Unfortunately, the warrior never reveals [himself]. You’ll never know what’s going on in the warrior’s heart, so the ax reveals it.” And there’s a lovely parallel seen in this episode. It all certainly gives you a lot to play with as an actor. In a previous interview Michael Hirst hinted that going into season 5, part of the action is going to be based on a “seed” planted in season 1 between you and Lagertha. Can you speak to what that seed might be? What should we be keeping our eyes peeled for? This is one of those moments where as an actor, you just realize that you’re in such a special show and you work with so many amazing people. Our very first director, who I’m always going to speak to the rafters about, Johan Renck, [is] a phenomenal director. I remember the very first scene with Lagertha, Ragnar, and Rollo. He likes to take actors out of the set and whisper things into their ears — every single take something different just to try to get a different performance and see how it changes. And it’s always the subtext; it’s always about what’s not being said.He whispered something into my ear in a scene where Ragnar goes out to relieve himself and [Rollo is] left all alone with Lagertha for a second that changed the whole construct of the scene. It was never said. I think maybe some may have picked up on it, but I never forgot it because it was a note that I never really thought about, and it made me as an actor question the whole character a little bit more and the subtext that Michael was writing. It’s lovely to have something that started out like, just as you said, a seed that’s come to fruition, and it’s grown, and the actor finally gets to speak it out loud. Maybe half the [audience] will go, “I knew it!” and then half of the other people are like, “Oh my god!” But what I love is that it all came from Michael’s writing and also this brilliant director at the very, very beginning.(Photo by Jonathan Hession/History)It sounds like you’re tapped in to fan theories and the discussion surrounding your character and this “seed.” What do you say to theories surrounding Björn’s parentage?Well, there was no paternity test back then in those days, so no one really knows at the end of the day. It’s not like you can get a pregnancy test and find out! Or take a sample of Viking hair and go get a DNA test.If only! But that’s what’s so great about Michael’s writing. There’s always a reason for why someone hates someone so much. There’s a fine line between love and hate. You know, if someone’s impassive towards someone, then there’s no story. But drama is built on conflict, and the fact that a character can one minute have so much anger towards someone and the next minute have so much compassion usually means that there’s a history between them or that there’s a love there. There’ve been scenes between Rollo and Lagertha all the way through Vikings: sometimes she hates him, sometimes he hates her, sometimes he loves her. It’s all that stuff, just as it was with Ragnar and Lagertha when Ragnar moved on from his marriage with Lagertha. That’s the good stuff. Nothing is stronger than our imagination, and I think what’s nice is that this has festered for a little while and now it’s either going to let people down or it’s going to explode the world of Vikings a little bit more.

(Photo by 20th Century Fox. Thumbnail: Netflix/courtesy Everett Collection.)The Worst Superhero Movies of All TimeGreat leaping tomatoes! It s the worst superhero movies ever, an infamous league of Rotten films that scored less than 30% on the Tomatometer!First off, to keep this list spandex-tight, not only did we include superhero movies below 30%, but each had to have at least 20 reviews, guaranteeing enough critics witnessed of these erratic efforts, franchise non-starters, and would-be blockbusters. After looking through the list, if you re wondering why you didn t see the 1990 Captain America movie, a bunch of those sequels to The Crow, or Dolph Lundgren s The Punisher, they were cut out by not accumulating at least 20 critics reviews. But, don t worry, still plenty of room for Frank in this castle of decrepitude, as the other two Punisher movies, the Thomas Jane one and War Zone, are represented. In fact, they both even currently have the same score at 29%, just squeezing into the list. And while most Audience Scores are in the same realm as its movie s Tomatometer, there s a divergence on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Dark Phoenix: Both Rotten movies according to the critics, but which settled above 60% on the Audience Score.Nic Cage appears twice on this list because they made two Ghost Rider movies. Ryan Reynolds also shows up twice but in two separate franchises, mucking it up in both houses of Marvel and DC via Blade: Trinity and Green Lantern. And because who doesn t like a comic book showdown, in the battle of Marvel vs DC over who s made the most worst superhero movies, Marvel is triumphant with 10 listings, and DC at 9. We didn t count The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the movie so bad it made Sean Connery quit acting, because though it was at the time produced at an imprint of an imprint of DC Comics (it s imprint-ception, people), the comic was always wholly owned by its creator Alan Moore.Of course, let s not count out other labels making special appearances, like 2000 A.D. (Judge Dredd) or Image (Spawn). Then there s the magic that happens when when Hollywood executives come together to create something that didn t come from a comic book, with sparkling results like Tim Allen s Zoom, an adaptation of TV cartoon Underdog, and the toy-based Max Steel. One last thing: For movies with the same Tomatometer scores, whichever had more reviews was placed higher. Now, come take a flying leap as we rank the worst superhero movies of all time!(And see a movie here you love and think Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong ? Send us a note and we might cover your movie in our new podcast. Hit us up at rtiswrong@rottentomatoes.com.)

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Indiana Jones 5, John Wick Chapter 4, and the next Star Trek. This WEEK S TOP STORYANTONIO BANDERAS JOINS INDIANA JONES 5(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Broad Green Pictures)Harrison Ford is now filming (after injuring his shoulder during rehearsals) the fifth Indiana Jones (the full title of which hasn t been announced yet) with director James Mangold (Logan, Ford v Ferrari), but we haven t really heard much about most of the film s c
Marvel Studios gave their fans an extra treat for the debut of its first weekly television series, WandaVision: two full episodes! There may be a reason for this decision buried in the plot, or it may just have to do with the first two episodes being in black white, but it also means getting a better sense of the series as the second episode begins a tonal shift from the premiere.Of course, that tonal shift seems to be a big part of the story as WandaVision both has a point its trying to get to with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and honor family sitcoms across the history of television.Keeping in mind the death of Vision (Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda s heroics in Avengers: Endgame, and the fact that she will be integral to upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, let s dive into what we ve seen of the series so far and discover what we can about the mystery at its core and how it fits within Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Spoiler Alert: The following reveals details about the first two episodes of WandaVision. Stop reading here if you have not watched the episodes.WandaVision Sets Its Action in an Early Sitcom-Styled Idyllic WorldNewly married Wanda and Vision arrive in the community of Westview, and settle in. Like wacky sitcoms of the late 50s and early 60s, they have secrets they need to keep from their neighbors: Wanda is telekinetic and Vision is a synthoid. Not that those facts stop them from integrating into Westview life. Vision already has a job at a computing firm and Wanda has a dream kitchen. There issues to be addressed, of course. The remainder of episode one introduces next door neighbor Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) and Vision s boss, Mr. Hart (Fred Melamed) and his wife (Debra Jo Rupp). The couple questions their own oddities, but generally accept their reality.Meanwhile, somewhere outside of Westview, the events of the WandaVision pilot are observed. In episode 2, Wanda and Vision prepare for their magic act in the Westview talent show and their day s errands. Vision wants to meet with the neighborhood watch while Wanda is off to meet with the local women s club. The episode introduces the neighborhood watch — little more than an excuse for the men to gossip — including Herb (David Payton). At the women s club, Wanda meets Dottie (Emma Caulfield Ford) and Geraldine (Teyonah Parris). After Wanda and Dottie have a heated moment, a nearby radio switches from the Beach Boys Help Me, Rhonda to a voice directly asking Wanda if he can hear him.Celebrating their magic show success, the pair return home and, quite suddenly, Wanda is pregnant. Hearing a ruckus, the two Avengers notice a beekeeper (with that sword logo on his uniform) emerging from a manhole cover in the street. Wanda finds this unacceptable and rewinds events to just a few moments before. In the safety of their house, Vision reassures her, and the world turns to color. As their sitcom world closes with The End and a Please stand by graphic, an urgent voice comes on: Wanda? Who s doing this to you, Wanda? Wanda? How the Series Pays Tribute to Classic TV As It Unravels a Deeper Marvel MysteryThe series is plastered in references to television history. Episode 1 takes many of its cues from shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, and Leave It to Beaver. The most direct comparisons come from Dick Van Dyke with the kitchen looking like a near replica of the one Mary Tyler Moore ruled on that sitcom. The plot of the episode — mistaken communication leading to trouble with Vision s boss — has the feel of something you might see on any of those shows, even if Vision s job is purposely vague both to us and himself.Curiously enough, an attempt was made to use vintage production techniques to give the episode more of an authentic late-1950s feel. It works really well and underscores the moment when Wanda and Vision are confronted by their imprecise memories. Once Mr. Hart starts choking on his dinner, the 50s lightning, compositions, and editing disappear until Wanda finally tells Vision to help his boss.It is worth pointing out as that same breaking of sitcom reality is not replicated in episode 2, which takes a very pointed amount of inspiration from Bewitched. The animated credit sequence directly emulates the classic TV sitcom and the set has been realigned to resemble that show s continuous first-floor locales, particularly the kitchen. Running from 1964 to 1972, Bewitched told the tale of Samantha Stevens, a witch by birth, and her buttoned-down husband Darren. Despite wanting to make it in the world by his own talents, Sam cannot help but use her powers to solve some of their problems. The parallels are obvious, even if the episode s actual plot feels less like Bewitched and something more tailored to Wanda and Vision s circumstances, which may be why the humor feels fresher than in the first episode. Also, since we noticed how well the first episode replicated the feel of 1950s sitcoms, episode 2 does an interesting job replicating the look of Bewitched, which began its life in black white and was known to use location filming in its early run. The style is evident here, although the film look of Bewitched is not carried over thanks to modern digital videotape cameras and the frame-rate change the new technology brought with it. This is especially true in the location shots, although it could be argued those more modern-looking scenes underscore Wanda real circumstances. What We Know About WandaVision′s Mystery So FarWhich brings us to the series apparent key mystery: Is all of this Wanda s doing? Her ability to literally rewind events in episode 2 — and her flat rejection of the beekeeper — suggests she is behind all of this. (Though Marvel comic book readers may recall what the logo stands for, we ll avoid spoilers and let the series reveal the answer.) But the message on Dottie s radio also offers the option that someone may be inducing all of this. If the latter is true, what could be the end goal of sticking Wanda in a sitcom reality? The refrain for the children offers one unsettling possibility.Meanwhile, the desperation to fit in, the careful edits of Vision s persona to make a more stereotypical TV husband, and the way she often runs out of answers stand as credible evidence that, perhaps, she did all of this on a whim to finally process her grief. It almost makes you wonder if the day Vision died is August 23.That also leads to another interesting question: who are the citizens of Westview? In the first episode, they seem to be part of the illusion. But the personalities of Herb and Dottie in episode 2 suggests Westview is a real place with real people. Are they being co-opted to function in Wanda s vision or are they also dead people she (or the outside force control this) is reviving to better create this idealized suburban life? One other option: the townsfolk are the outside putting pressure on Wanda to live this dream life, even if the real facts about her relationship with Vision means he is the grandest illusion of all. OK, maybe it is the baby — that, of course, remains to be seen. Also, while we re asking questions, we have to consider the people in the commercials. The none-too-subtle references to Stark and Strucker are funny, but also a clear invasion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe into Westview. Are they part of this or just another manifestation of whatever is happening to Wanda?New episodes of WandaVision premiere on Fridays on Disney+.

Before he won an Academy Award with Parasite, director Bong Joon-ho made the politically-charged sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer, which followed a non-stop bullet train filled with the last remnants of humanity as the rest of the planet got turned into an uninhabitable icy wasteland. The result was a widely celebrated film starring Chris Evans, so it s not surprising that we d get a TV adaptation. The first season of TNT s version of Snowpiercer adds a murder mystery on top of the sci-fi tale of class warfare from the movie and the graphic novels by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. The show takes place seven years after the world became a frozen wasteland and the perpetually moving train started going around the globe with the last 3,000 survivors aboard. Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) is the world s last homicide detective, the de facto leader of the low-class tail-section of the train and the person tasked with solving a murder so the people at the front of the train can keep him in check before he goes and starts a revolution. The person that hires him? Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), the voice of the train and the right-hand woman of the train s builder, the mysterious Mr. Wilford.Does the series live up to the original movie? Here’s what critics are saying about Snowpiercer season 1:JENNIFER CONNELLY SHINES AS A COMPLICATED FIGURE(Photo by TNT)Playing someone more human than Tilda Swinton did in the film, Connelly nicely juggles Melanie’s icy, passengers-facing facade with the MIT and Yale grad’s warmer private life.– Matt Webb Mitovich, TV LineAs the co-lead, Connelly s Melanie is compelling in a way that is subtly genius, and will probably provoke discourse and political parallels as audiences watch the series. While her character could easily serve as a sort of patron saint for white feminism, her nuances and flaws are peeled back in a fascinating way as the season goes along.– Jenna Anderson, ComicBook.comThe Academy Award winner for A Beautiful Mind is magnificent playing this many-faceted woman. She can be warm and welcoming, commanding and authoritarian or simply menacing in a matter of instants. It s a role that proves, once again, that TV tends to reward established actresses with opportunities hardly found in movies.– Patricia Puentes, CNETTHERE S A MURDER-MYSTERY PLOT, AND IT S KINDA DULL(Photo by Justina Mintz/TNT)Snowpiercer the TV show is a murder mystery — and not an intriguing one by any means — for a large part of its first season, with revolution on the back burner until Layton can figure out who s trying out for an arc on Criminal Minds by hacking people to pieces.– Tim Surette, TV GuideThough Season 1 does revolve around the same tail section rebellion as the film, it takes a half-season detour when Layton, a former homicide detective, gets escorted up-train to solve a grisly execution. For about four episodes, “Snowpiercer” veers way too close to becoming a TNT police procedural, a la “Murder on the Polar Express.”– Ben Travers, IndieWireIt takes the same core concept and expands on it, replacing inexplicable mystery with dull exposition. Some of that was probably necessary in order to sustain an ongoing series, but it misses the point of adapting such strange, singular source material.– Josh Bell, CBREVERYTHING LOOKS MORE SPACIOUS IN THE SERIES(Photo by Justina Mintz/TNT)Snowpiercer definitely captures the aesthetic established in the film, albeit in a largely less-surreal way. The set designs and costumes are an authentic blend of grounded and avant-garde, again contributing to the feeling that the train is truly lived-in. The cinematography also actively helps the series feel less claustrophobic than it could be, which is a blessing for those who are hoping to spend 10 hours with the series.– Jenna Anderson, ComicBook.comAs episodes further explore the train, giant stages, generous lighting, and plenty of wide shots give the impression of more room than there could possibly be, while illustrating admirable production design, vivid costuming, and skillful world-building of its own. This isn’t Bong’s “Snowpiercer,” it’s TNT’s.– Ben Travers, IndieWireVisually, TV’s Snowpiercer is not as claustrophobic as the big-screen version; the individual sets all seem to be as narrow or spacious as they need to be, though always within a certain amount of reason (especially if you are able to buy into the notion of a 1,001-car train).– Matt Webb Mitovich, TV LineTHERE IS PLENTY OF BLOODY ACTION(Photo by Justina Mintz/TNT)The action scenes are efficiently staged, if a little jarring as they are dropped in. Altered Carbon is bigger than ever as it enters its second season. There are new characters to meet, new worlds to explore, and new sleeves to wear. In this season, Anthony Mackie steps into the role of Takeshi Kovacs, played mostly by Joel Kinnaman in season 1, whose Stack now drives a militarily enhanced sleeve with super-human strength and the ability to summon guns directly to his hands merely by raising his arms. It was a lot to prepare for and, yes, Mackie admits, he got hit by a few stray guns trying to pull off the moves on screen.Ahead of the series’ return, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with the stars of Altered Carbon season 2 – returning cast members Renée Elise Goldsberry (Quellcrist Falconer) and Chris Conner (Poe), as well as newcomers Mackie, Dina Shihabi (Dig 301), Simone Missick (Trepp), Torben Liebrecht (Colonel Ivan Carrera), and Lela Loren (Danica Harlan) – to learn about new alliances being formed, who their characters are (or how they’ve changed), and whether they see Stack technology as something something to fear or something to embrace.Plus, Mackie gets candid, opening up about how Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will do things for its two lead characters that the MCU movies never could.Altered Carbon season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as The Flash, Kraven the Hunter, and Gucci. This WEEK S TOP STORYOLIVIA WILDE MIGHT BE DIRECTING A SPIDER-WOMAN MOVIE FOR SONY(Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Annapurna Pictures)Although SPUMC is a pretty clumsy abbreviation, Sony Pictures does indeed have a massive Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters slate planned. In addition to Venom and the upcoming Morbius (3/19/2021, delayed from 7/10/2021 because of COVID-19), the SPUMC development slate currently includes: Jackpot, Kraven the Hunter (see story below), Madame Web, Nightwatch, Silk, and The Sinister Six. One of the most talked about stories of the week was the announcement that Sony Pictures has officially hired actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde for an untitled female-centric Marvel movie. Most of the stories about Wilde s hiring speculate that the secret project is probably Spider-Woman, A.K.A. Jessica Drew, who debuted in the comics in 1977, before soon after getting her own Saturday morning cartoon (which you can now watch on Disney+). It s also possible that Olivia Wilde s project could be about another Spider woman hero, like Silk, Ghost-Spider (A.K.A. Spider-Gwen), Madame Web, or someone never mentioned for a movie before like Spider-Girl or Araña (Peter Parker has got a lot of female counterparts). Olivia Wilde s next project as director will be a thriller called Don t Worry Darling, starring Florence Pugh, Dakota Johnson, Shia LaBeouf, and Chris Pine.Other Top Headlines1. THE FLASH WILL PROMINENTLY FEATURE TWO FORMER BATMEN(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)We ve known for some time that the long planned DC Comics solo movie for The Flash (starring Ezra Miller from Justice League) is likely to involve the popular Flashpoint storyline, in which The Flash s attempt to change the past results in all sorts of alternate reality craziness. There have been recent rumors that The Flash could feature past Batman actors like Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, but this week, we appeared to receive confirmation that both of them will indeed return as their versions of Batman. Let s start with Ben Affleck, who at one point appeared to be done with playing Batman, especially when Twilight star Robert Pattinson signed on to star in the long-in-development The Batman (10/1/2021), which at one point was supposed to have starred Affleck. Affleck reportedly had notes on the script before he agreed to sign on to return in The Flash. (You can read much more speculation about the possible impact of this  right here). As we said earlier, Affleck won t be the only returning Batman, as Michael Keaton from the original 1989 Batman will also be coming back, in what is now being called a substantial role, versus what had previously been thought to just be a cameo of some sort. Although the COVID-19 pandemic obviously continues to have an impact on release dates, The Flash is currently scheduled for release on June 2, 2022.2. WILL SMITH AND KEVIN HART BOARD THE PLANES, TRAINS, AUTOMOBILES REMAKE (Photo by Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)Despite the ongoing love affair with 1980s movies, and the wave of remakes of 1980s movies, one of the most beloved directors of the 1980s John Hughes has basically been left untouched (Hughes wrote, but didn t direct, the original Vacation, which was remade in 2015). That will likely soon change, as Paramount Pictures is now actively developing a remake of the 1987 classic Planes, Trains Automobiles (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Steve Martin and John Candy as fellow travelers who face a series of obstacles in their attempts to get home for Thanksgiving. The new Planes, Trains Automobiles is being developed for Paramount by Will Smith s Westbrook Studios and Kevin Hart s Hartbeat Productions as a star vehicle for both of them. It s unconfirmed which star will be reprising which role, but our money is on Smith to play the harried family man and Kevin Hart to play the sad-sack loner. Television writer Aeysha Carr (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fresh at 95%) has been hired to make her feature film debut adapting the film.3. LADY GAGA S GUCCI MAY BE JOINED BY DE NIRO, PACINO, DRIVER, AND LETO(Photo by ©Netflix)Some movies seem to be intended from their very inception as possible awards contenders, and from the day we first heard about Ridley Scott s Gucci, starring Lady Gaga as Patricia Reggiani, it seemed like exactly that sort of film. Having said that, there s Oscar bait and then there s OSCAR BAIT, and you don t get much more Oscar Baity than the casting coup Scott was able to manage this week. In addition to Lady Gaga s three nominations and one Academy Award, and Ridley Scott s four Academy Award nominations, the actors cast in Gucci this week have received a total of four Academy Award wins (for The Godfather Part II, Raging Bull, Scent of a Woman, and Dallas Buyers Club) and a grand total of twenty Academy Award acting nominations. The actors in question are Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Jared Leto, and Adam Driver (who s no slouch either, with nominations for both BlackKklansman and Marriage Story). Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston and Broadway star Reeve Carney are also in talks for roles. If both De Niro and Pacino do sign on for Gucci, it will be their fifth film acting together, following The Godfather Part II, Heat, Righteous Kill, and The Irishman. MGM currently has Gucci scheduled for release on November 24, 2021.4. THE MANDALORIAN STAR PEDRO PASCAL TO OBSESS OVER NICOLAS CAGE (Photo by Eli Winston/Everett Collection)One of the most fun movie news stories of 2019 came in November (just before we entered the trainwreck that is 2020) when we first heard about The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Nicolas Cage will play a fictionalized version of himself. This week, we learned that Cage s co-star will be Pedro Pascal, who is coming off the Disney+ hit The Mandalorian and is scheduled to appear as villain Maxwell Lord in the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984. Pascal s casting brings with it a better understanding of exactly what this movie will be about. Nicolas Cage will play a washed up, unfulfilled, and financially impaired version of himself who agrees to attend a birthday party of a super fan (Pedro Pascal) for a million dollars. The party soon turns dangerously obsessive as Cage must must stay alive by recreating his most beloved moments as an actor. (Keep in mind that this is the same guy who ate a cockroach for Vampire s Kiss). We have yet to learn if any bees will be involved.5. SPIDER-MAN VILLAIN KRAVEN THE HUNTER TO RECEIVE HIS OWN MOVIE (Photo by Marvel Comics)The news about the possible Spider-Woman movie sort of absorbed most of the Marvel movie attention this week, but there was actually major movement for another film to be set in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC). To start off, we should note that earlier this month, there was a rumor that Sony and Marvel were seeking a Joel-Kinnaman-type for Tom Holland s third Spider-Man movie, which many interpreted as being for the role of old school Spidey villain Kraven the Hunter (also one of Spider-Man s few classic villains who hasn t yet been depicted in a live-action movie). We still don t know if there are any plans to introduce Kraven in the next Spider-Man, but we do know that Sony is now developing a Kraven the Hunter movie, as the studio is now in talks with director J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, Triple Frontier). Kraven the Hunter dates all the way back to 1964 and The Amazing Spider-Man #15, but the arguably definitive Kraven story arc is 1987 s Kraven s Last Hunt (which may be part of the inspiration for the Kraven the Hunter movie as well). We should also note that there has been talk about Sony developing a Kraven the Hunter movie at least as far back as 2017 (along with Mysterio, who eventually made his debut in last year s Spider-Man: Far from Home, played by Jake Gyllenhaal).6. PETE DAVIDSON AND O SHEA JACKSON JR. TO TAKE ON SNEAKER CULTURE (Photo by ©NEON, Mary Cybulski/©Universal Pictures)In addition to the aforementioned Planes, Trains Automobiles remake, Kevin Hart s HartBeat Production also made the news this week for partnering with NBA star Chris Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder for a dramedy called American Sole. Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live, The King of Staten Island) and O Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton, and also Ice Cube s son) are both attached to star in American Sole, which is set in the world of after-market sneakers as two college graduates who attempt to get out of debt by getting into the lucrative market of reselling sneakers for much higher markups (which reportedly is now estimated to be worth over billion in sales each year). Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica Lodge on The CW s Riverdale, also joined American Sole this week as the girlfriend of Pete Davidson s character.7. BJORK JOINS ROBERT EGGERS VIKING EPIC THE NORTHMAN(Photo by Ronald Siemoneit/Getty Images)The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed all aspects of filmmaking, both in and out of Hollywood, but one of the more obvious examples is the Vikings epic The Northman, which had to shut down just a week before production was to start in March. This week, director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) was finally able to start principal production of The Northman on the elaborate sets that have been assembled in rural Ireland. Most of the epic s cast had already been announced months ago, including Eggers The Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe, Anya Taylor-Joy from The Witch, Nicole Kidman, and brothers Alexander Skarsgård (HBO s True Blood) and Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise from IT). The new addition this week was Icelandic pop star Bjork, who is reportedly playing a character called The Slav Witch, which sort of makes sense (Bjork actually made her feature film debut 30 years ago in 1990 with the Icelandic witchcraft fairy tale The Juniper Tree).8. LAURENCE FISHBURNE SAYS HE WASN T ASKED TO COME BACK FOR THE MATRIX 4 (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)There is an expression in comic book fandom that goes, No one stays dead except Uncle Ben (humorously, that saying used to include Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd, until they both got revived). The trope about dead characters eventually coming back for financial reasons also applies frequently to the movies (like, say, the slasher villains in the Halloween and Friday the 13th franchises). So, one might have thought that Laurence Fishburne could be brought back as Morpheus in The Matrix 4, but this week, Fishburne clarified, I have not been invited. Also this week, Keanu Reeves spoke to press about the safety protocols on The Matrix 4 as production has resumed on sets in Germany. Filming had begun in February in San Francisco until moving on briefly to Berlin, but as with most film projects at the time, production of The Matrix 4 was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Keanu Reeves fellow cast members will include Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith (from the original trilogy) and newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (rumored to be playing the young Morpheus), Priyanka Chopra Jones, and Neil Patrick Harris. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to regularly cause release date changes, but for now, The Matrix 4 is scheduled for April 1st, 2022.9. POTENTIAL NEW GHOSTFACE VICTIMS ANNOUNCED FOR SCREAM 5 (Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)In March of this year, we first learned that the directors and producers of last year s horror comedy Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%) had signed on to direct the long-awaited sequel Scream 5. For the most part, casting until this week mostly involved the announcements of returning franchise stars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers-Riley. This week, two different young actresses were announced, starting with Melissa Barrera, who will be one of the stars of Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights when that movie is eventually released in 2021 (delayed from this summer). Two days later, Jane the Virigin co-star Jenna Ortega also joined the cast. In related (and unsurprising) news, Samara Weaving also revealed this week that there had been a moment this year when she almost was cast by her Ready or Not collaborators in Scream 5, saying, We were talking about it, but our schedules aren’t gonna work, which is a bummer. Scream 5 is expected to be released sometime in 2021 (probably later in the year), and filming is expected to start in Wilmington, North Carolina, later this year.

With studios and distributors loading up on a pre-launch campaign against Disney’s dominance at the box office – something that will be amplified with next week’s release of The Lion King – there were not a lot of alternatives for moviegoers to get behind this weekend. Marvel and Pixar both led the way again and the two newcomers could barely combine to beat the film in second place. For those in a Chicken Little panic over supposed dwindling ticket sales this year, this weekend certainly gave fuel to that fire with the top 10 films adding up to the lowest July weekend total since 2009.King of the Crop: Spider-Man Not Far From the Billion Club (Photo by © Columbia Pictures / © Marvel Studios/ Courtesy Everett Collection)Spider-Man: Far From Home took the lead again to no surprise for a second straight week. With 9.2 million on Thursday, it ranked as the 32nd highest-grossing film ever after 10 days in theaters. However, the drop to .3 million this weekend has put its numbers closer to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 than many of the top-tier MCU films. Raimi’s film had 5.1 million after 10 days and a .1 million second weekend. It finished its run with 3.5 million. Spider-Man: Homecoming made .2 million in its second weekend. Just remember that Far From Home also had a Tuesday opening (and the biggest one of all-time). Amongst the 35 films to have reached 5 million domestic, only Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Titanic, and Frozen made less in their second weekends than Far From Home. (Titanic’s .4 million in 1997 would be about .5 million today.) Worldwide the film has grossed over 7 million and will soon become the ninth film of the MCU to gross over a billion dollars.Rotten Returns: Stuber Disappoints with Million Start(Photo by Mark Hill/ © TM & copyright © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp.)Stuber may not be a mega-budgeted production at million, but unless you are a true indie or working under the Blumhouse margin, an million opening is just not going to cut it. Thirty six films in 2019 have opened in 3,000 theaters or more and only Missing Link (.9 million) and Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King (.1 million) – both Certified Fresh at 89% on the Tomatometer, incidentally – grossed less in their opening weekends. (A Dog’s Journey made .03 million.) Stuber, with a Tomatometer score of 46% currently, joins Winnie the Pooh, Ramona and Beezus, Monte Carlo, and Katy Perry: Part of Me as the films this past decade to open between million and million in July. They all posted final tallies between .1 million and .7 million. None of those films were rated “R” though.Top 10 and Beyond: Crawl Takes Small Bite as Disney Offerings Show LegsToy Story 4 crossed the 0 million line worldwide this weekend. Plus, the once-dubbed “disappointment” from burned analysts is only the 23rd highest-grossing film ever after 24 days with over 6 million at the domestic box office. Though the film is right in line with Toy Story 3’s fourth weekend of million, it did slip slightly behind during the week from being million ahead of the third film’s pace to just around million. No worries, however, as it is still on pace for a 0 million haul in North America. The fim is over 1 million worldwide. To finish up the Disney dominance news this week, their live-action version of Aladdin has officially become one of the 50th highest-grossing films of all-time in the world with over 0 million. The Lion King is already gearing up to join that list having grossed .7 million in China this weekend. Then, of course, Avengers: Endgame grabbed an additional .8 million across the globe and is now less than million away from capturing Avatar’s all-time record with .780 billion.(Photo by © Paramount Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection)Over to the horror side of the top 10, Paramount chose not to screen Alexandre Aja’s alligator horror film, Crawl, for critics this week. Nevertheless those that reviewed it gifted it with an 88% on the Tomatometer and it s already Certified Fresh. It may have bested Stuber for the newcomer crown this weekend, but its million start is not entirely a cause for celebration, even with just a .5 million budget. That is more than the .9 million that another mid-July alligator film called Lake Placid opened to back in 1999. That film would have opened to about .7 million in today’s dollars and finished with .7 million. The smart money is on Crawl finishing with less, unless word-of-mouth – which again, is good – pushes it further.Ari Aster’s Midsommar has .4 million after 12 days, which puts it between fellow Wednesday openers No Escape, the 2015 terrorist thriller, and the 2004 remake of Around the World in 80 Days. That may suggest a finish in the - million range. Except Midsommar’s .5 million weekend was less than either of theirs. The film would need .2 million to pass A24’s first wide opener, The Witch, for fifth place on their all-time chart. Midsommar is nevertheless going to finish no worse than right behind it in sixth place with more than The Disaster Artist’s .1 million. Annabelle Comes Home is now over million, placing the film firmly between the third weekend grosses and totals of The First Purge (.10 million, .48 million) and Rocky Balboa (.01 million, .27 million), so figure a final tally in there while it currently stands at over 3 million worldwide – far less than either of the previous films but more than enough to turn a profit.Coincidences in box office are always fun to find and this week’s example comes with Danny Boyle’s Yesterday, which has become the director’s second highest-grossing film ever. That has nothing to do with coincidence though. Actually the .75 million it grossed this weekend and a total at .3 million puts the film in league with another tale of a singer from the U.K. that opened in June and was released by Universal some nine years ago. That film was Get Him To The Greek. It grossed .1 million in its third weekend and had .8 million after 17 days on its way to .9 million. On the Specialty Box Office: The Farewell Shows Signs of Being a Breakout HitFinally, in limited release news, Bleecker Street’s The Art of Self-Defense (Certified Fresh at 92%) grossed 1,000 in seven theaters. That per-theater-average of ,285 is just a bit less than Late Night’s ,593 average in 14 theaters when it first opened. Amazon expanded that film into over 2,200 theaters in weekend two and it has grossed more than million to date. Bleecker will expand Art into over 500 theaters next weekend and it is the ninth film in Bleecker’s history (out of 32 releases) to score 90% or higher on the Tomatometer. But the developing story may be that of Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, with Awkwafina. One of the most beloved films out of Sundance this year grossed 1,330 this weekend in just four theaters. That is the 15th best opening ever for a film launched in just four venues and the third best for A24. Moonlight (2,075) and Lady Bird (4,437) opened just a bit stronger and they, respectively, rank third and first amongst all A24 releases. The Farewell also maintains a perfect Certified Fresh score of 100% on the Tomatometer. It is the 28th A24 film to score 90% or higher out the distributor s 77 releases. This Time Last Year: Hotel Transylvania 3 Bests Skyscraper(Photo by © Sony Pictures Releasing)Adam Sandler’s ghoulish animated series showed no signs of wavering as Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation got its first taste of the box office outside of September and opened at number 1 with million. Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 61% to second place, but that was still good enough to keep back Dwayne Johnson’s attempt at Die Hard in Skyscraper, which opened to just .9 million. In limited release, Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade opened to 3,797 in just four theaters. The Top 10 films grossed 4.03 million and averaged 67.7% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 did an estimated 3.04 million and averaged 66.9%. It was actually the lowest Top 10 total for a weekend in July since the July 31-August 2, 2009 weekend when Funny People led the way with .65 million and a top 10 total of 7.14 million.
