Directed by Hayao Miyazaki in collaboration with Isao Takahata, this 26-episode series features a flooded post-apocalyptic Earth, warring human factions, a boy with superhuman strength, a girl with telepathic powers, and, of course, pirates and seaplanes. Released before his feature debut, The Castle of Cagliostro, this is light years beyond Miyazaki s other TV output (like when directing Sherlock Hound episodes or his run on Lupin the 3rd, all great), finding him at his most youthful and enthusiastic. And the show bears all the hallmarks of his later work, like worthy female protagonists, environmentalist messages, and complex, shifting relationships between heroes and villains. Which actually renders the phrase later work void. Future Boy Conan shows he s always known how to make masterpieces.Space Pirate Captain Harlock (1978-1979) (Photo by Toei Animation)The beginning of a vast space opera franchise created by Leiji Matsumoto, this is a slow-burn melodrama anchored around the titular Harlock, who has left Earth in his ship, the Arcadia, after defining space as the final frontier for a man of honor like himself. He and his crew engage in war with the all-female Mazone, who threaten his home planet. In his characteristic skull-and-crossbones cloak, Harlock s stoic nature and moral nobility (and not to mention he s a bit of a lush) quickly became a lovely, foundational trope in anime. It s now to the point where his image and character has been parodied in disparate animation, from Project A-Ko to Steven Universe.Watch on: CrunchyrollMobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) (Photo by Nippon Sunrise)Like Futurama, Star Trek, and Firefly, Mobile Suit Gundam was one of those sci-fi shows that found significant life even after their early cancellations, as fans united and rallied around their beloved series. In Gundam s case, the powers that be were convinced to resurrect the franchise after model kits of the show s mechs flew off the shelves for years. Audiences were clearly vibing to Gundam s revolutionary new style of personalized giant robots in space warfare, to the point that decades later a Gundam blasted its way into a major fighting appearance within Ready Player One s climactic battle. Outside the cool mech design, the original Gundam series is notable for hero Amuro, and his rivalry with Char, whose redemption and fall in the sequels make up one of the great character arcs in classic anime.Ranma 1/2 (1987-1992) (Photo by Studio Deen)A freewheeling blitz of martial arts slapstick and ever-so-many romantic misunderstandings, Ranma 1/2 is a tale of two families, the Saotomes and the Tendos, whose members and friends are affected by a curse, enacted upon them after some characters bathe or fall into a forbidden natural spring. Cold water afflicts the accursed, transforming one person into a pig, another a duck, a panda, and so on. And in the case of raven-haired Ranma Saotome, cool liquid morphs him into a red-headed pig-tailed girl. The only way to turn any of them back is with a splash of hot H2O. The quirky gender politics, and the love-hate interplay between Ranma and his violently reluctant betrothed Akane Tendo (not cursed, outside of being an exceptionally bad cook), drive the action and comedy, as other would-be suitors surge in like hawks of anarchy. After its TV run, Ranma 1/2 carried on through a robust gauntlet of OVAs and feature films.Watch on: Hulu, VIZDragon Ball Z (1989-1996) (Photo by Toei)Anime has been a strong force in upending societal impressions that animation is strictly for kids. And every now and then a show breaks through the otaku inner circles and into shopping malls and the mainstream, validating the medium in a way through its vast pop-cultural reach. Dragon Ball Z is one of those major breakthroughs, an epic of planet-annihilating proportions, whose long-gestating battles of inner rage and surging emotion speaks especially to an eternal adolescent audience. Series protagonist Goku is now an icon of animation thanks to his justice-driven good nature, aided by the characteristically unfussy character design by Akira Toriyama, and a meme-friendly fanbase. And Goku still lives today, through a currently-airing sequel series, the critically acclaimed 2019 Broly film, and even funky Thundercat songs.Watch on: FunimationPatlabor: The TV Series (1989-1990) (Photo by Sunrise)Patlabor pulls the mecha genre out from space operas and away from all those cosmic threats, and lands it in for a more upbeat earthbound approach. Created in the twilight of Japan s economic boom before the bubble burst in 1992, the series glitters with a positive, progressive outlook on the (then) near-future of the island nation, where commercial-grade mechs called Labors have integrated within every day life, powering transportation, manufacturing, land development, and more avenues of industry. We follow the colorful, motley crew of officers at Second Special Vehicles Division, who combat a variety of Labor-related crimes. Less overtly political than the OVA and movie timeline, The TV Series is an appealing breakdown of a unique police unit s inner workings that, in its best episodes, feels like an office sitcom whose lessons are delivered through giant robot beatdowns.Watch on: HiDiveSailor Moon (1992-1997) (Photo by Toei)If stereotypically Dragon Ball Z captured the attention of boys, then Sailor Moon did the same for girls. A pioneer in national broadcast syndication like DBZ, Sailor Moon brought anime to the masses. It was an after-school, afternoon delight to daily unite with Usagi (or Serena, in the original English dub) and her intergalactic planetary squad of friends, as they navigate adolescent life, mysterious boyfriends, and their own secret identities as magically-endowed defenders of the planet. Series director Kunihiko Ikuhara would go to direct another shojo classic series, Revolutionary Girl Utena.Watch on: Hulu, VIZTenchi Muyo! (1995)(Photo by AIC)From Bubblegum Crisis to El-Hazard: The Magnificent World to Oh My Goddess!, production house AIC defined the anime look from the mid- 80s to early 90s. AIC s tendency towards warm color tones and diligent, weighty animation gave their projects an alluring haze which felt simultaneously grounded and not of this world. The Tenchi universe was the commercial crown jewel of the era, with additional OVAs, feature films, and spinoffs. Tenchi s premise is one of those classic anime wish fulfillment set-ups, where a hapless high school dude gets entangled in a love triangle, with the two other participants being a princess from another planet, and a roguish space pirate. Superhuman powers, time travel, and a cat-rabbit who can transform into a spaceship may also get involved. The AIC look and Tenchi s fluidity between romance, action, sci-fi, comedy, and drama really hits that anime sweet spot.Watch on: FunimationNeon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996)(Photo by Gainax)Hailed as the apex of serialized anime since its debut, Neon Genesis Evangelion’s champagne reputation belies just how strange it is. Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan where kaijus known as “Angels” repeatedly ravage humanity, the series follows Shinji Ikari, an insecure boy chosen to pilot one of the Evangelions, which are giant, mysterious robots that are the only weapons capable of repelling the Angel menace. From there, Evangelion transforms from a mecha procedural into an impressionistic allegory about the inherent loneliness of being human. The virtually plotless finale divided audiences at the time and remains contentious to this day. Series creator Hideaki Anno responded to fan outrage with a supplemental film titled The End of Evangelion, which brought closure to the story while diving headlong into a darkness that the show merely glanced at. The result is a harrowing but unusually frank exploration of mental health. Twenty-three seasons later, Ash is still at it, with no signs of slowing down. That s because the show (and franchise at large, really) hasn t wavered from its core, timeless bent towards adventure and discovery, of what it s like to be operating in its universe. Every opportunity is taken to make you feel the thrill of being a Pokemon seeker, as seen in the video games, Pokemon GO!, and even Detective Pikachu.Watch on: Pokemon TVCowboy Bebop (1997-1998)(Photo by Sunrise)Cowboy Bebop feels like the end of anime s classic era, a spectacular climax for cel animation television, and the dawn of anime finally entering the public consciousness. Of course, Bebop had a big hand in making anime explode in America, as cable television grew in popularity and Cartoon Network began airing the show in blocks with the likes of The Big O, Trigun, and InuYasha. Relentlessly hip, Cowboy Bebop stood out (still does) for its silky animation, eclectic blues and jazz soundtrack, postmodern editing trips, explosive action set pieces, and the natural allure of star bounty hunter Spike, who moves like a deep space Elliott Gould from The Long Goodbye. Only Spike s even cooler than Marlowe.Watch on: HuluSerial Experiments Lain (1998)(Photo by Triangle Staff)Serial Experiments Lain helped usher in a new style of anime, of more digitally-produced shows with a glossy bloom and deeper, darker, complicated storylines. In the wake of Neon Genesis tearing up the typical anime playbook, Lain pursues a surreal, interior cyberpunk story about a withdrawn high school girl who receives an email from a classmate who has recently committed suicide. Questions of hyperreality, consciousness, and the everyday tangibility of cyberspace ensue. Lain is pretentious, symbolic, and absorbing – a prime example of a brave new world in anime.Watch on: FunimationFLCL (2000-2001, 2018)(Photo by Production I.G)What does FLCL (pronounced “Fooly Cooly”) mean? Nobody seems to know in this joyous, nervy, and wistful odyssey through the pangs of puberty. A passion project by Gainax animator Kazuya Tsurumaki, this madcap allegory delivers one of the most experientially authentic depictions of blossoming sexuality in any medium. The story kicks off when Naota Nandaba, a surly 12-year-old boy from a nondescript town, has his life upended when a boisterous drifter drives into town and thwacks him across the head with her guitar. Symptoms for Naota’s injury include angst, confusion, and his skull sprouting fighting robots who may be a part of a vast alien conspiracy. Like its title, the story logic of FLCL matters far less than how the journey makes the viewer feel. For anyone who can remember their first discombobulating step into adulthood, FLCL will feel like coming home.Watch on: Hulu, Funimation, Crunchyroll (2018 season)Naruto (2002-2017)(Photo by Pierrot)One of the longest-running anime ever with over 700 episodes, it s pretty hard to never have heard of Naruto before even if you re not into anime. The show follows an orphaned boy named Naruto, who lives with the soul of a nine-tailed demon fox trapped inside him, and dreams of one day becoming a ninja. The value of friendship and determination is at the core of this show, which offers plenty of interesting characters, both friend and foe, and a story that grabs your attention and never lets go despite having hundreds of episodes. Of course, this all wouldn t work if Naruto himself weren t an amazing protagonist. Indeed, he s one of the most well-developed and charismatic characters in anime history, and we witness him evolving from from aspiring ninja, to leader, to even a father.Watch on: Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, VIZFullmetal Alchemist (2003-2004)(Photo by Bones)An action/adventure show with an upbeat tone, amazing action scenes, excellent world-building and characters you can easily fall in love with, it s easy to see why Fullmetal Alchemist is considered one of the best anime series of the 2000s. As upbeat as it is, the story has loss and grief as a central theme. The series follows two brothers who venture out to look for the legendary Philosopher s Stone and regain the bodies they lost after trying to resurrect their dead mother using alchemy. Also worth noting is the equally fantastic Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which was a more faithful adaptation of the original manga, whereas Fullmetal Alchemist took many liberties with the source material.Watch on: NetflixCode Geass (2006-2007)(Photo by Sunrise)In an alternate timeline where the British Empire won the Revolutionary War, but then subsequently lost against Napoleon, we re introduced to a world where the Holy Britannian Empire controls a third of the Earth. Now, the Empire is set on conquering Japan. A Britannian prince in exile finds himself the leader of a rebellion when he receives the power of absolute obedience. Code Geass is full of unforgettable twists, with several mysteries and shocking developments coming at the audience, and a compelling war story that manages to tell a big picture story of epic proportions as well as more intimate character stories that you ll care deeply about. Then there s the mech action. Though this is not Neon Genesis Evangelion, this series still offers plenty of giant robot action mixed with the Game of Thrones-like political machinations.Watch on: Netflix, Funimation, CrunchyrollDeath Note (2006-2007)(Photo by Madhouse)What do you get when you combine a god of death so bored he drops off on Earth a notebook capable of killing any person whose name is written inside, a high school student who wants to clear the world from criminals, and an eccentric detective known only as L? One hell of a cat-and-mouse four-dimensional chess game. Death Note doesn t have a villain really, but instead it lines up two opposing sides who believe in justice but follow vastly different paths to achieve it. There are questions about morality and justice that will make you think, and nail-biting schemes and plots that will keep you guessing and enthralled.Watch on: Crunchyroll, Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Tubi, Vudu, Pluto TV, VIZGurren Lagaan (2007)(Photo by Gainax)In this over-the-top, loud, hot-blooded, and exciting mecha show hides the antithesis of Evangelion, offering not so much a deconstruction of the genre, but a celebration of it. Gurren Lagann follows two friends who become the symbols of rebellion against a powerful tyrant, in a world where mankind has been forced underground to live in subterranean villages. This show has fast-paced action sequences that can rival those of the biggest blockbusters, with a distinct visual style as loud and extreme as an 80s heavy metal banger. Additionally, Gurren Lagann doesn t shy away from killing off favorite characters and exploring more emotionally mature themes while raising the stakes to epic world-ending proportions.Watch on: Funimation, Crunchyroll, Netflix, HuluSteins;Gate (2011)(Photo by White Fox)Time travel stories aren t easy to pull off, but Steins;Gate almost makes it look easy. (And that s while having a semicolon it its title.) We follow a self-proclaimed mad scientist who likes to joke around with crazy inventions, until he accidentally invents a phone that can send messages across temporal space. Now he and his friends find themselves trapped in a murder loop, as the show uses the butterfly effect to demonstrate the increasingly complicated consequences of trying to change the future. The story is airtight, and though the time travel gets complex, it s never too confusing. As much a head-scratcher as it is a thrilling roller coaster, this is a sci-fi show you don t want to miss.Watch on: Hulu, Funimation, CrunchyrollHunter x Hunter (2011-2014)(Photo by Madhouse)In a world where people can become certified Hunters to track down treasure, criminals, and people, a 12-year-old embarks on a journey to become a Hunter himself in order to find his missing father. The premise of Hunter x Hunter isn t completely new (it feels a lot like Dragon Ball), but what makes this show special is in the execution. For one, the show makes its villain as big and compelling a character as the hero, and his story rivals the best protagonist stories out there. Thus, the show spans several generations, along with multiple locations and genres, while always maintaining its very distinct and strange visual style. This is Victorian vampire horror, superhero Nazi-fighting, and a murder mystery all in one. Also what makes JoJo s so loved is its many references to 80s action heroes (most of the absurdly beefy characters are inspired by your Schwarzeneggers and Stallones of yore) and rock stars. David Michôd and Joel Edgerton took on a bold task when they set out to adapt Shakespeare s so-called Henriad into a single feature film, and they knew that in order to make the transition a successful one, they would need to enlist the services of a talented group of actors. They found exactly what they were looking for in Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, Ben Mendelsohn, Thomasin McKenzie, and Lily-Rose Depp, who helped bring the story of Henry V s ascent to the throne to vibrant life in The King. The film premiered in September at the Venice Film Festival, and while it s set to make its streaming debut on Netflix on November 1, it already saw a limited theatrical release on October 11, and critics have largely been on board with the new vision. Ahead of its Netflix premiere, Michôd, Edgerton, Chalamet, and Depp sat down with RT editor Jacqueline Coley to chat about The King, explaining how daunting it was to take something Shakespeare perfected and make it feel new, and how exhilarating it was for Chalamet to shoot his action sequences. The Charlotte Hale–bot (Tessa Thompson) figures on the other side of the equation. Driven by a nihilistic streak, holding the reins of Host regeneration, and bent on revenge, Charlotte commanded — surely it wasn’t an original thought — the Man in Black Host (Ed Harris) to eliminate his human counterpart William in the post-credits scene, which also gave us a glimpse of the Host horde Charlotte is constructing. You too will be assimilated.For all of its reinvention, Westworld’s season 3 is Certified Fresh at 79%, with its first six episodes averaging 82%. The season fell victim to the Game of Thrones curse, however, with its final two episodes earning Rotten scores, and the finale, “Crisis Theory,” garnering the lowest episode score of the entire series.“Though the third season often succumbed to mission drift, the show did at least follow through on the likelihood that the cost of freedom would be oblivion. But the payoffs elsewhere were close to nonexistent,” Scott Tobias wrote for the New York Times.But Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibbard sees a silver lining: “Westworld season 3 ended in a rather Westworld-ian way: By hitting its narrative control-alt-delete keys all at the same time for a potential re-re-reboot of the story for next season.”The question now is what that re-re-reboot might entail. Evan Rachel Wood drove the past two seasons exquisitely as the Hostess with the most-est. Maybe this is just personal preference, but the idea that you can’t keep a good woman down holds a lot of appeal. She could be patched together from the pieces of her memory that she stashed in other Hosts. Or, given the data redundancies required in corporate life even now, it seems too simplistic to think that the Dolores on the slab under Rehoboam with her memories being systematically deleted represented the very last version of her consciousness. Surely, she was backed up to the Cloud.2. What Bernard Lowe Discovered in the Sublime(Photo by HBO)What does robot bliss look like? In season 2, we saw it as a human ideal: a bucolic dreamscape of rolling green vistas. In the post-credits scene, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) returned to the human reality covered in dust, and season 4 will tell us if that was a time-jump and those layers of dirt represented years having passed or a nearer future in which the destruction of the first human exterminations has begun. Before Bernard went under, Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) — no doubt now moldy in the bathtub — asked him what he hoped to find in the Sublime. An answer, Bernard replied, to what comes after the end of the world. But does he mean in the physical world or in the Sublime?3. Maeve and Caleb: Is There a Place for Them? (Photo by HBO)Are Maeve and Caleb now BFFs? Or has she simply committed herself to his well-being? At the end of the finale, Maeve was shining her maternal light on him hard. Are you ready, darling? she purred. He was skeptical: For what? She: This is the new world, and in this world, you can be whoever the f you want. Skyscrapers burned in the background. This story is just beginning. Maeve embraced Dolores plan in the end — or, at least, didn t stand in the way of it — and protected Caleb by turning on Rehoboam-puppet Serac (Vincent Cassel). The question is: To what end? If Maeve drank Dolores Kool-Aid, will she promote Caleb as the leader of the future s human resistance? Does she even know what Hale-bot has in the works? Season 4 no doubt will feature Maeve wrestling with the human cause and her own interests.4. Charlotte Heading Up Skynet(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Crispy Charlotte told Dolores Prime that, no, she s not mad; she s just hell-bent on securing the Hosts place on Earth. Now that she s replaced white-straightjacket human William with Man in Black Host William, she has a ruthless robot general to marshal her robot army. Or not. One thing is for certain: Charlotte (Dolores-lite) will be responsible for the mass casualty events promised by Rehoboam s predictions: at 1–3 years, 6–10 years, and 12–16 years, with a population collapse at 23 years and the end of human civilization in 50–125 years. Do fans want to see what that 50–125 year period will look like? Will Delos Inc. be renamed Skynet ?5. Artificial Intelligence Becoming Aware of Its Own Emotional Intelligence(Photo by HBO)During a finale fight with Maeve, Dolores revealed that she was the first of their kind who worked — that, like Adam and Eve, the others were made from her metaphorical rib bone. Perhaps that is why Dolores is so ahead of the curve, forging a path over the course of the series from puppet, unaware of the strings controlling her, to vigilante, seeking violent retribution for the crimes against her, to martyr, sacrificing herself for the (possible) good of the many. Avengement (2019) is, as suggested by the title, a film that follows a criminal on furlough from prison who uses his time on the outside to take down those who made him a cold-blooded killer. Could music icon David Bowie have experienced the same level of fame in the England portrayed in Epix drama Pennyworth? Creator Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon doubt it.“I think he would be allowed to release that awful first album with ‘Laughing Gnome’ and all that,” Heller told Rotten Tomatoes when we talked to him, Cannon, and cast members recently. “He never would ve met Mick Ronson, and he d still be floating about singing about elves.”Considering the program’s use of anachronistic music – like The Clash and Roxy Music – the disappearance of Bowie from the cultural scene may be the clearest indication of Pennyworth’s nightmare world. It has also been one year since Alfred killed his father during the senior Pennyworth s attempt to bomb the entire British aristocracy out of existence. In the ensuing chaos, Harwood, Bet Sykes (Paloma Faith), and her sister Peg (Polly Walker) escaped the Tower of London with Harwood resuming his attempt to take over the country. But considering he comes from a generation expected to just carry on through traumatic stress, Alfie’s nightmares linger, and Bannon doubts he’ll ever find help for his various issues.“I think it would be something perhaps that he should look into,” he joked. “I m sure if he lived nowadays in the modern world, he would look into it. Last year, it was something he was experiencing very much on his own and this year people are noticing perhaps that Maybe not that he s unraveling, but there are cracks appearing.”The nightclub itself serves as a glamorous respite from the battles on the front line and another example of that British resiliency.“We wanted London to reflect not just being at war, but the way that they could still celebrate and party in terrible circumstances, which is very British,” Cannon explained.Bannon was, nonetheless, surprised when he arrived on set and saw how swanky the club turned out to be. Expecting a more rundown nightspot, he said, “Mark Scruton, our production designer, had got carried away basically and built this enormous club that was decadent and wonderful and brilliant.”As one of the few new marquee sets, it stands out almost immediately. But the club, and the trouble Alfie gets into in the early part of the season, reflects a tougher challenge ahead — getting his mother to immigrate with him.“She s got to come with him to America,” Bannon said. “I don t think he would leave her behind. The problem is convincing her that America is a good idea. He s less able to bullshit her,” he said.There’s also the possibility that the way he presents himself is all a cover for the beast Crowley (Jonjo O Neill) discovered within him.But Aldridge suggested the beast is more an echo of his son, saying, “I love that was brought into it, and the idea was that it s something that he shares with Bruce.”That said, working for the Company in his new capacity may force Thomas s beast to reappear.Fighting the good fight all this time, though, is Martha. In the wake of the season 1 bombing, she continued to ally herself with the remnants of the No Name League and the Queen’s loyalist coalition.“She s kind of willing to sacrifice anything for that, almost to like a selfish degree,” Paetz said.(Photo by Epix)It means she spends plenty of time on the front lines. and it quickly becomes clear she likes the thrill of it all. Which leads to one question about future events: Will she be able to let that go some day to settle down in Gotham?“I don t think that she can really, entirely, now,” Paetz said. “It brings up questions like, ‘What does it mean to be a vigilante?’ [and] ‘Do you feel like you re doing something for the good of everyone, or actually, is it satisfying something in you, because it feels good for you to do it?’ In theory, she’s fighting a very noble cause that she does believe in, but it really satiates something in her that doesn t really have anything to do with the cause itself.”Martha’s thirst for adventure and justice in the series represents one of the largest expansions of the character in any medium. A happy addition, to be sure, even if it seems at odds with Batman’s memories of her.Although, it is always possible Bruce just doesn’t acknowledge the lives his parents led.“A lot of people say to Ben and I, ‘Oh, there s like this kind of almost stoic archetype that Thomas and Martha fall into, as his parents, how was it stepping into those roles?’ But I think that, to me, a lot of that seems like it s centered around Batman in the comics,” Paetz said. “Thomas and Martha are [the memory] of someone whose parents had died tragically young, [and] is their idea of who they might ve been — airbrushed and edited out and idealized, more than they actually were.”If that is the case, it allows for Batman’s eventual parents to become more fully realized here than ever before.(Photo by Epix)A handful of new faces will also be joining the show, including Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox, Jessica De Gouw as Melanie — described by Heller as a “dangerous character. The more you re attracted to her, the more dangerous she becomes.” — and James Purefoy as Alfie’s old commanding officer, Captain Gulliver Troy. He also happens to be Melanie’s husband, which will add another layer of danger to Alfie’s interactions with her.But the first fresh face viewers will meet is Salt, a high value target to the Queen s league played by Edward Hogg. Though unassuming in his first few scenes, Heller noted “authoritarians come in all shapes and sizes” when asked about the character.“Everyone dismisses [someone like Salt] as too low class, too provincial, too vulgar, not a heroic enough a character. Those people can, especially in times of change, in times of conflict, push their way to the front,” Heller said.The producer noted Hogg plays both “the very real, serious threat” hidden in the character and “an amount of pantomime villainy” necessary in a show sharing its ancestry with Gotham.(Photo by Epix)And much like Harwood, Salt represents part of the rising tide of fascism within the series’ antagonists. To Heller, fascism is a tough opponent to crack as it is seductive — “What man has not pictured himself in knee-high leather boots?” he joked — and noted even Batman exhibits certain fascistic tendencies in his war on crime.“He doesn t form a political party. He doesn t make it political. He makes it personal,” Heller explained. “If you think the solution [to Gotham’s problems] is destruction, that s sort of fascism. That s the essence of it. Batman is precisely struggling with Christian charity and the old eye-for-an-eye stuff.”Paetz, meanwhile, hopes the tide of authoritarianism can subside.“Can anyone be inherently evil and therefore, will evil manifest itself in fascist forms of government throughout history? I hope the answer is no,” she said. “That people are not inherently evil, there is good, and we can nurture and fight our way out of this.”Bannon joked: “Bruno keeps writing things that keep happening in real life and we keep begging him, ‘just write a nice world where everyone gets on and it s all fine,’ but he keeps telling us that s not very interesting for a TV show.”Heller’s writing also makes the cast apprehensive about what they may find if the show ever moves to Gotham City. It’s a reimagining of the late 14th-century poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” which tells one of the most well-known stories in Arthurian legend canon – the tale of Sir Gawain, who accepts a terrifying challenge from a stranger on Christmas, and the quest he must embark on one year later.It was a bold choice for Lowery to adapt a 700-year-old chivalric romance for the 21st century, and one that required a number of changes so that a story so profoundly rooted in the morality and literary style of the Middle Ages resonated with a modern audience. Here are five ways he changed the original Arthurian epic to do just that… and one important way he kept the medieval story intact.The Green Knight Gets Wild(Photo by © A24)In Lowery’s vision of Arthurian legend, the Green Knight is a primal supernatural entity, one whose ties to the natural world are right in his design. He is the Green Man of ancient myth come to life with his bark face accented by a beard made of curling twigs. Neither fully man nor tree, he harkens back to an older, pagan time when the lines between the natural world and the supernatural were far more blurred. Even the offshoot “branches” that crown his head vaguely evoke the horns of Cernunnos, the Celtic Horned God and lord of wild things. It’s deliberate character design meant to evoke the ancient unease of humanity realizing it doesn’t have full control of the world, and it’s a smart decision on Lowery’s part.The design of the Green Knight in the original poem is a less wild thing; the antagonist is more nobleman who just happens to be green. When Arthur’s court meets him, he’s kitted out in forest green finery, with emeralds and jewels encrusting his ax and bridle, his fine-spun clothes trimmed with silk and ermine. It was a striking image, one that made an impression in the late 14th century, but one that today would fail to impress modern moviegoers who have seen it all. By stripping the sense of rich civility from the Green Knight, Lowery draws out the inherent otherness of the character and tinges it with horror.Mother Knows Best: Recasting Morgan le Fay and Enriching Her Motivation(Photo by © A24)When the original poem was written, it was during a time in the Middle Ages in which Morgan le Fay’s role in Arthurian legend was transitioning from benevolent protector to villain. As patriarchal Christian morality took root and began heavily influencing writing of the era, Morgan (Arthur’s half-sibling), previously an amalgam of earlier revered, magical female Celtic deities, was recast as a malevolent sorceress of evil intent. Her role was often to play the antagonist in the mythology, intent on causing chaos in her half-brother’s court.Her motivations for summoning the Green Knight and arranging the challenge in the original poem were fittingly petty: hoping Arthur would take up the challenge, Morgan merely wanted to frighten Guinevere in a bit of spite. Gawain taking up the challenge instead was coincidental. That’s a flimsy and wildly outdated premise to build a story around in modern times. Lowery changed Morgan’s connection to Gawain and, in doing so, changed her motivation. By making Morgan Gawain’s mother in the film, her game, while harsh, made much more sense. A petty, inexplicably cruel woman sending a man to his potential death because she’s miffed at another woman is nonsensical and regressive; but a powerful woman secretly pushing her son to find his greatness is something one can understand, if not necessarily agree with.Sir Gawain: Peak Millennial(Photo by © A24)As with so many things in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” what makes perfect sense in a medieval poem doesn’t translate so well to the big screen in 2021. This is arguably never truer than with Gawain himself. Dev Patel’s portrayal of Gawain is vastly different than the Gawain of the poem; while he’s less likable, he’s also more relatable.Poem Gawain was not so much a character in his own right, but a noble archetype and morality tale in one. He was meant to be the chivalric ideal and had the depiction to match. In fact, Gawain held himself to such a high standard in the poem that his test was to learn he was human and fallible, and that perfection is something that only God himself can achieve. Gawain is pious and pure, humble and extraordinarily chaste, courageous and benevolent to all he meets.Thus, Lowery was presented with the Captain America problem: how does one make a character so inherently perfect interesting? Marvel achieved it not by changing Captain America, but by changing the world around him. Lowery achieved it by doing the opposite: keeping the world the same but changing Gawain. His Gawain is far more flawed than the version in the poem, an entitled wastrel who is squandering his potential in sex and drink. Purity and chastity are not in movie Gawain’s nature and his test, in many ways, is the opposite of the test presented in the source. Poem Gawain had to learn that even great knights can wobble; movie Gawain had to see if he could even be great at all.As a heroic ideal, The Green Knight’s protagonist is quite lacking, but as a character whose struggle makes sense for moviegoers today, he’s incredibly timely.Making New Frenemies(Photo by © A24)“Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is a true hero’s journey, an epic quest of man vs. nature, but moreover, of man vs. himself. There are only a handful of characters in the original poem and Gawain spends large chunks of the story by himself. For the purposes of depicting the Christ-like trials of a noble knight in a chivalric romance, it works; for a modern movie adaptation, however, it makes for an awfully boring on-screen story.Lowery wisely recognizes this and addresses it by adding three characters who seamlessly blend into the story while playing key roles in Gawain’s growth. Essel (Alicia Vikander) is the earthly temptation he must set aside to fully devote himself to his quest; the Scavenger (Barry Keoghan) is meant to shatter the naiveté and sheltered worldview Gawain holds; Winifred (Erin Kellyman) presents Gawain with a test of his altruism and chivalry. Each brings something essential that Gawain must learn in order to evolve, and their use provides a blueprint for how to add original characters to Arthurian adaptations that still feel as vital and necessary to the story as any characters in the old mythology.Bye, Bye to The Wild – and Potentially Slow – Hunt (Photo by © A24)Adapting an older story requires an insightful balance of knowing what to keep and what to cut: Too slavishly devote yourself to the original source and you risk dragging the story down with unnecessary scenes; deviate too far and you risk undermining the very aspects that made the original story so beloved in the first place.While Lowery certainly added to the story, he also excised certain parts with a decisive hand. The most impactful edit was Lowery’s compression of the poem’s lengthily told three-day hunting scene, during which readers follow Lord Bertilak as he rides out each day to hunt, with the third and final day offering a parallel narrative with Bertilak chasing a wily and evasive fox as Gawain tries to evade Lady Bertilak’s aggressive advances back at the castle. It’s a great bit of symbolism, but an unnecessary part of the story that would have further dragged down the already slow-burn movie.Condensing it kept the crux of Gawain’s quandary intact in the film while not killing the momentum that was building up heading into the third act.…And What Lowery Smartly Chose NOT To Change(Photo by © A24)Though Lowery took plenty of liberties with the original poem, The Green Knight remains true to the spirit of its source. So many layers are packed into “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” but what truly holds it up are two tentpole themes that remain searingly relevant: the duality of the pagan natural world vs. ordered Christianity, and the core story of a knight discovering the man he truly is. Remove or change other elements and the story still largely stands on its own, but remove those two foundational pillars and it comes crashing down.Lowery’s instincts for what to change and what to leave intact served him well, and the result is the old, archetypal story told in a fresh new way. One that feels urgent and modern, and yet true to its source. After Hollywood’s recent, multiple failed attempts to bring more Arthurian stories to the big screen, it might look to The Green Knight for an example of how to make Camelot and its endless well of stories relevant again.The Green Knight is in theaters now. Legion, one of the most daring superhero series of the decade, ended its three-season run in typically mindf ing fashion; The Boys won critics over with twists, swears, and a meta take on the genre; Doom Patrol gave us equal parts weirdness and heart (and DC Universe a hit); and the Michael B. Jordan-produced Raising Dion offered a new kind of hero in a story told with remarkable ambition. Recent Star Wars alumnus John Boyega took to the streets in London this week for a Black Lives Matter protest in support of the movement against police brutality, which sparked up again dramatically following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, MN on May 26. During an impassioned speech, Boyega acknowledged the risk inherent in an entertainment figure speaking out in such a manner, saying, Look, I don t know if I m going to have a career after this, but f that. As it turned out, he didn t have anything to worry about, because a deluge of support came in from Hollywood filmmakers eager to work with Boyega on future projects. The list includes Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), who said, We got you, John Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie); Lin-Manuel Miranda, who said, Oh god I WISH Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), who said, Have before and would again Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep); Olivia Wilde (Booksmart), who said, Absolutely Peyton Reed (Ant-Man), who said, Anytime at all and also the official Star Wars Twitter account. Jonah Jameson, the role he played Sam Raimi s three Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man films. The cameo seemed to tease a potential premise for Tom Holland s third solo Spider-Man movie, and this week, Simmons confirmed that he is indeed signed to return for more Spider-Man sequels (note the plural there). There was, however, some doubt in his statement, because Simmons said, I don’t know if I would use the word ‘expect' when asked if fans can expect to see him in the next film. The next Spider-Man doesn t have an official title (though it s rumored to possibly be Spider-Man: Home Run), but it does have a release date scheduled for November 6, 2021 (pushed back four months from next July due to pandemic-related production delays).3. Mahoney is now signed with Paramount Pictures for what will be her first film as a director (not counting second unit, obviously) since her 2011 debut drama Yelling to the Sky, and it will be an action movie called Kill Them All. The screenplay by screenwriter James Coyne will be an adaptation of an Oni Press graphic novel described as a love letter to 1990s action movies about a hard-drinking former cop who wants his job back and a betrayed murderess who team up to take down a vicious Miami crime lord.4. Along the way, we learned that De Niro was to play the serial killer, and that DiCaprio would be playing one of the lead F.B.I. agents investigating the case. Unfortunately, having Leonardo DiCaprio in a lead role may have led the film s budget to balloon past 0 million. In an effort to keep that cost down, Scorsese has reportedly made changes to DiCaprio s role, which will now instead be a villain (or anti-hero) who is a nephew of De Niro s character and leaves the door open for another (cheaper) actor to play the federal agent. The revelations of these changes came out due to Apple taking over Killers of the Flower Moon from Paramount Pictures. Paramount will still release Killers of the Flower Moon theatrically, and then the film will move to Apple+ for streaming.5. The pandemic has obviously delayed film production and release, but two movies that will come out soon are the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect (starring Jennifer Hudson) (12/25/2020) and Baz Luhrmann s Elvis Presley project (11/5/2021), while other musicians with biopics in development include the Bee Gees, Boy George, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, and Amy Winehouse. Thanks to Edward James Olmos, we can also now add Tito Puente, the King of Mambo, to that list, as Olmos is now working with Puente s family and estate on film and TV projects based on Puente s life and legacy. Before his death in 2000 at the age of 77, Tito Puente had a 50+ year career that included six Grammy Awards (including a lifetime achievement award) as a mambo and Latin jazz musician, band leader, songwriter, and record producer. Puente s most famous song was probably Oye Como Va (thanks in part to Santana also recording the song for their 1970 album Abraxas).6. Morbius was directed by Daniel Espinosa (Child 44, Safe House), who this week entered into a deal to develop The Execution, which is described as a narrative drama about the background to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi Arabian-born dissident and Washington Post columnist who was killed in Istanbul in 2018. The true story behind The Execution will be adapted by screenwriter Petter Skavlan, who also worked on 2012 s Kon-Tiki (Certified Fresh at 81%), which was based on the true story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl s expedition across the Pacific Ocean on a raft.

It should be interesting to see whom Regina King will cast as her four leads. Will Smith starred in Ali, and Denzel Washington starred in Malcolm X, but the long-planned Sam Cooke biopic is still in development.6. That may be, in a big-picture sort of way, but it also came in the same week that news broke about two star-driven Netflix thrillers. Red Notice is the title of a heist thriller that Universal Pictures had previously scheduled for November 13, 2020, with both Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot attached to star. Reportedly, Universal had reservations after the screenplay was turned in, and so the project was picked up by Netflix instead, with Johnson and Gadot now to be joined by Ryan Reynolds. Woody Harrelson also signed on this week to co-star in the assassin thriller Kate, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane). Red Notice will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who earned Rotten scores for We re the Miller and Skyscraper, while Kate will be directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who made his debut with The Huntsman: Winter s War (Rotten at 18%). Neither of the directors inspires much confidence, but we can t deny those casts are impressive.7. UNIVERSAL CASTS ITS INVISIBLE MAN (Photo by Steve Dietl/Netflix)Back when Universal Pictures had ambitious plans for a Dark Universe of reboots of their classic monsters, Johnny Depp had been expected to star in The Invisible Man, but those plans were dropped after the box office disappointment that was 2017 s The Mummy. For a while, there was some confusion over whether or not the movie might be called The Invisible Woman, because Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid s Tale, The West Wing) was described as the film s star. The confusion was cleared up slightly this week as Blumhouse and Universal has cast relative newcomer Oliver Jackson-Cohen (of Netflix s The Haunting of Hill House) as the title character in The Invisible Man. Univesal has scheduled The Invisible Man for March 13, 2020, up against another monster movie, Godzilla vs Kong. One of the other co-stars in The Invisible Man will be 16-year-old Storm Reid (12 Years a Slave, A Wrinkle in Time), who this week also joined The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021) as the daughter of Idris Elba s character.Rotten Idea2. MOMO INTERNET HOAX TO GET ITS OWN MOVIE(Photo by DOUGBERRY/Getty Images)It seems longer ago than 2018, but last year, stories started appearing online about the Momo Challenge, which reportedly encouraged children and teeangers to put themselves in dangerous or injurious situations. The character called Momo was actually a Japanese sculpture called Mother Bird (but really, it most resembles Geena Davis in some scenes from Beetlejuice). Orion Pictures (of the recent Child s Play reboot) is now teaming up with producer Roy Lee (IT, The Ring) to develop a horror film based on the Momo challenge. The decision to adapt an Internet meme seems similar to Sony PIctures choice last year to release a film based on Slender Man, which ended up earning a very low Rotten score at just 7%.1. LOOK WHO S REMAKING LOOK WHO S TALKING(Photo by TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Amy Heckerling s 1989 comedy Look Who s Talking (Rotten at 59%) was followed in 1990 by Look Who s Talking Too (Rotten at 14%), and in 1993 by Look Who s Talking Now (Rotten at 0%). John Travolta and Kirstie Alley starred in those movies about talking babies and, in the third movie, talking dogs. Despite those critical drubbings, Sony Pictures is now developing a Look Who s Talking reboot to be written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, whose 2015 comedy The Wedding Ringer earned a Rotten score at 27%. King of the Crop: Captain Marvel Vanquishes DoubtersDebbie DayWhen it comes to proving its worth among domestic audiences, Captain Marvel s numbers reveal the truth of this heroic box office tale; the Marvel movie s million Friday-to-Sunday take is the 17th best second weekend in history and the second best ever in March. The 6 million it amassed to date is the 19th best total for a film in its first 10 days. Does this mean 0 million is inevitable? Not quite, but the odds are very much in its favor given that 20 of the 24 films to gross over million in their second weekend reached the milestone. Only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Alice In Wonderland, It, and 2016’s The Jungle Book came up short. Jordan Peele’s Us is likely to take the top spot next weekend, but anything above million will keep Marvel on track to become the seventh 0 million domestic grosser. It is already the 17th Marvel property to pass 0 million worldwide.Rotten Returns: Captive State Sets New Low For Focus(Photo by Focus Features)Just two weeks ago, Focus Features took Neil Jordan’s psycho-thriller, Greta, into over 2,400 theaters. The unfortunate result was the lowest opening weekend for a film released by the studio into a 2,000-plus screen launch. This week they released Rupert Wyatt’s million sci-fi thriller, Captive State into 2,548 theaters — only this time without screening its film for critics. Though it has scored just marginally lower (47%) than Greta (54%) on the Tomatometer, Captive State now owns Focus’ low-water mark for such a release with a .1 million start for just a ,240 per-theater average. That is the worst PTA for a wide release launch in the studio’s history and the eighth worst among all of their releases. The five worst PTA’s of 2018 in a 2,000-plus theater launch were: Life Itself (4), Gringo (,132), Action Point (,176), The Hurricane Heist (,259), and Early Man (,279). Replicas still owns that title in 2019 with a ,020 average.Top 10 and Beyond: Only Dragon a Success Among Animated Films(Photo by Universal Pictures)Leading the newbies this week was Paramount’s Wonder Park. The near 0 million production, which was started back in 2014, arrived without an official director’s credit (after the original one was fired due to complaints of inappropriate conduct against women). The studio was certainly hoping for more than a 30% Tomatometer score and a million start, putting it in league with film’s like Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga Hoole, which finished with just million and million, respectively. In other animated news, The Lego Movie 2 finally passed the 0 million line (the first film took nine days), but it is nevertheless also a bust for Warner Bros. with just 1 million worldwide; their biggest since 2017’s Justice League. How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is anything but though for Universal, already into profit with over 6 million worldwide.CBS Films and Lionsgate’s release of weepie teen romance, Five Feet Apart (52% on the Tomatometer), made a very respectable .1 million. Not too shabby on just a million budget. Also making its way into profit for the studio is Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, which, after 8 million in 17 days, is headed to become the third-highest-grossing film of his career. Back in 2016 Lionsgate and Pantelion opened No Manches Frida to .67 million. This weekend it opened No Manches Frida 2 to an estimated .89 million in just 472 theaters — or less than 19% of the theaters that Captive State played in.In other limited release news, the top PTA of the week went to Sony Classics’ The Mustang (95% Tomatometer score), which made ,000 on each of its four screens. Fox Searchlight’s The Aftermath (27% Tomatometer score) grossed ,500 for a ,500 average. That is just the 19th film in the studio’s history to register with less than 30% on the Tomatometer. The last was 2013’s Baggage Claim, with a 14% Tomatometer score, is one of only five films Searchlight released in over 2,000 theaters in its opening weekend. Neon’s documentary, Apollo 11 (100% Tomatometer score), expanded into 588 theaters and grossed another .22 million.
