So I m wondering, with Ad Astra, did you start with a father-son story in space, or did you want to make a movie in space and have these big set pieces, but then it became more natural to tether it to a father-son relationship?An excellent question. I wish I could tell you that I came up with the story first, but it s not how it happened. I was thinking very seriously about a childhood memory that I had. I grew up in New York, and you couldn t see the stars. The sky had this kind of dull orange at night, because the city was so lit up. I remember there was a blackout that hit the city this was 1977, in the summer of 1977 and I remember, as all the lights went out, you could see the stars for the first time.All of a sudden I had this weird memory back to that feeling it was, like, 2011 and I thought, Wouldn t it be great to make a movie about what is out there? I talked about it a lot with my friend and co-writer, Ethan (Gross), and I asked, What it means to be out there, and are there aliens, or are we alone? Well, there are a lot of movies about aliens, and good aliens and bad aliens. (Steven) Spielberg s done incredible work about that, but his movies, they play like fables. E.T. is like a fable; Close Encounters, like a fable. Beautiful, beautiful films. (Stanley) Kubrick made a beautiful film, of course (in 2001). The alien is a black slab of granite, whatever it appears to look like. Is that a good alien? A bad alien? What does that mean? You can project anything you want on it. And if there s nothing out there, that poses its own set of existential questions. So it started from that, really, and that was the chain of events. Then I tried to start getting the story as personal as I could, and we wanted to steal from as pretentious as this sounds we wanted to steal from The Odyssey, and tell the story, really, from Telemachus point of view. His father, Odysseus, goes away for 20 years; he doesn t know what happened to him. What that would mean, and that sense of abandonment that Telemachus must have Now, of course, Homer’s story ends very differently. But that s where that came from, a kind of mythic idea. Then, of course, you start to personalize it, you start to include things in your own life, and before you know it, you ve got this tiny little story about a father and a son against the huge canvas, where you re going out there, it s the vast infinite. That s really how it formed.So, the opening in the film, and I m not a take-a-notepad-to-the-film person, mostly because High Fidelity scarred me for life Oh when his girlfriend clicks her pen throughout the movie to take notes?Yes! Ha, what a nice aside.So I m not sure if I got the two words correct, but the movie opens with something like, in the near future, there s hope and fear about humanity’s future. In presenting the future, what is something that you discovered in your research that gives you hope about the future, and what is something that terrifies you?It’s an easy question to answer. Easy. Hope: the mapping of the human genome, hospital cures for diseases, the specialized treatment of things like different kinds of cancer, that s fantastic. And fear, I think, is obvious. The fear is climate change and the end of civilization, the civilized world.If you look at Mars By the way, the NASA people I ve worked with on this film, who are great, their hair s on fire. The f ing world is ending and, I mean, I understand that it s a slow burn, but it s not that slow. In fact, the permafrost is going worse up there than we think, you know? Greenland, large sheets are melting faster than we think, or we thought now we know. Already parts of New York are uninsurable.And lots of Los Angeles, for fires.Yeah. I m extremely concerned. So, I think progress is a beautiful thing. I think that we ll be able to do things that we couldn t imagine in terms of human longevity. Maybe we ll figure out what it means in the future, to maybe find an answer to not just longevity, but market economics, where five people don t control all the wealth on the planet. That s a problem.If we could solve that, that would be great, but I have hope that we do, because the world moves in cycles, strange cycles. I feel like we re itching for a new path forward on how to handle some of our problems. But climate change, that s a tough one. That s a tough one. There are things like taking CO² and making it into oxygen. Apparently, technologically, there are ways to do it, but it s ridiculously expensive. But we re going to have to do it. I don t see any other way around it. I hope I m completely wrong.Ryan Fujitani[Note: Mild spoilers below]We can get morose for the whole interview, but this movie has a lot of very fun, thrilling sequences.I hope so.Like the moon pirates, the underground lake, or even just the opening, falling from space, et cetera. The mayday call for help and where that goes…All of that was supposed to be thematically relevant, more than narratively relevant. The idea that, basically, unexpected horror is around every turn when you re that far away from Earth. So we felt that it had thematic unity, if not narrative unity. Anything earthbound, it s not meant to live out there. It s not meant to be there. That s not our friend, it s different to us. We felt that the mayday response was an important sequence. Do people want to know about that beforehand?I loved the surprise, so I think, where we re at for filmgoers is people just want to know that there s blood, there s a confrontation, there s excitement.Well, there is blood. There is blood.There are deaths and surprises.We tried to do that. We wanted to deliver that stuff. The fall from the tower, the lunar-rover sequence, the [mayday] thing, the underground lake, certainly; he climbs up a rocket, he has a zero G fight, he flies through the rings of a planet. I mean, we wanted to deliver some red meat. We absolutely did. By the way, there is no shame in that. Shakespeare was broad and subtle; that s good stuff. So, we tried, and we tried to do it in our own way, of course, make it weird, unique, strange; in the lunar rover you can only hear what s inside his helmet. And Emerald has her own voice entirely, but it really moves from one hand to a similar hand.”When the series comes back to BBC America on April 7, it’ll pick up approximately 30 seconds after the events of the season 1 finale, and Eve (Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) will be at odds once again. The duo said that their characters’ relationship will definitely evolve in season 2.“I think what is most interesting about Eve’s stabbing Villanelle at the end of series 1 is Villanelle’s reaction to that, and just how emotionally she perceives that. Hamill told reporters at a TCA panel for the show that he never intended taking on a project like Knightfall, but was hooked after watching a few episodes.“I just thought, ‘I’ve never been offered anything like this before.’ I mean, I’d never done a character quite like this before — a religious zealot, a man of deep convictions, and, yet, such a paradox, Hamill said. He’s lecturing the troops and he says, ‘Once you become a Templar knight you shall become God’s executioners.’ How could there be such a thing? I thought, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ But that’s the thing, I was flattered that they would think of me in such a diverse character part, and I thought, ‘Oh, I have to do this. I really do have to do this,’ to be part of a largely British cast and in a period drama like this, which I’d never done before. But the ties between the two actually didn’t occur to him until he’d already said yes.“I didn’t really think it through, but the truth of the matter is that I’m sure George Lucas came from so many different inspirations of his own, both from the movies and literature, Hamill said. He was probably thinking more of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, because it was more idealized and glamorous, certainly, than the Templar Knights, but there’s no question that his inspiration was rooted, partially, in this mythology.”Pennyworth Creators Explain Why Batman’s Butler Needs an Origin Series(Photo by Epix)Fox’s Batman prequel series, Gotham, is coming to an end this year. But more pre-Batman stories will continue to be told on television in Epix’s Pennyworth, an origin story about the early life of Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon).“It’s really the chance to make him the center of a story and explain that journey: How did he get from being a young SAS soldier to being a butler in America? And it also gives us a chance to create a real world around him, a world in England that fits the whole DC universe,” executive producer Bruno Heller said. “It’s surprising to all of us the depth and range that you can go to with this character.”While the character’s creator, Bob Kane, set the 1930s as Alfred’s origin, but the Epix series is set in the 1960s. Executive producer Danny Cannon said that as someone from London, that seemed like the most dynamic time period to set a show.“It’s after the war, before things change for good. You could see the change in the air. Things were happening, culturally, artistically, that — it was an inspiring time, I think, that English people always revisit,” Cannon said. “So, to say that that was the foundations of which we were starting with and then making it 13 degrees more DC, 13 degrees darker [is when the series] really came alive for us.”The Story Behind NOS4A2’s Title(Photo by Zach Dilgard/AMC)The people involved in AMC’s new supernatural horror series NOS4A2 know that the title (pronounced like “Nosferatu”) is a little bit out of the ordinary. But the series, which stars Zachary Quinto as a vampire of sorts who feeds on the souls of children, is based on the book of the same name by Joe Hill (who happens to be the son of Stephen King), and series creator Jami O’Brien said the cast and producers are going to do their best to educate the audience about it.“One of the wonderful things about the book is that there are a lot of word games in it. One of the characters is a Scrabble master and librarian. And I think that the title itself, you know, Manx [played by Quinto] talks about it deeper in the book than where we get in the first season, but it’s a joke. And it’s also a puzzle,” O’Brien said. “And I think both of those things speak to the humor of the book and the humor of the character and is kind of a fun twist on the vampire genre, you know? Charlie Manx is a kind of vampire, but he’s not any kind of vampire that we’ve seen before. He doesn’t suck blood. He sucks souls. So, I think it’s a little irreverent, and I think — I’m glad that we have it because I think it’s a lot of fun.”

One of the 21 Jump Street stars, Channing Tatum, is reuniting with the directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who helmed the Jump Street movies) for a modern-day tongue-in-cheek thriller inspired by Universal s classic monster legacy, to be written by screenwriter Reid Carolin (Magic Mike, Magic Mike XXL), who also came up with the project s original idea. That s the end of what we know right now about this comedic thriller s concept, but this writer can t help but remember what comedic franchise was also involved in interconnecting the various Universal Monsters back in the 1940s and 1950s: Abbott and Costello. Starting in 1948 with Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein, the comedy team had several adventures that included Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man, Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy. Could Channing Tatum be Abbott in a new take on those movies? Just a theory.5. 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE DIRECTOR ON THE HUNT FOR PREDATOR 5 (Photo by Michele K. For as ubiquitous as Predator seems in pop culture, those four movies combined only add up to a four movie global box office take of 3 million (from a combined budget of 8 million). And yet, Hollywood keeps trying to make Predator happen. 20th Century Studios (the new version of 20th Century Fox, post-Disney acquisition) is now developing a fifth standalone Predator movie to be directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Certified Fresh at 90%), working from a screenplay by Jack Ryan producer Patrick Aison. No other details are known about what Trachtenberg has planned for the fifth Predator movie.6. Given that amount of time (and everything else that s happened in 2020), one might have thought that the Five Nights at Freddy s movie had long since fallen apart, but this week, the creator of the game franchise, Scott Cawthon gave an update to state quite the opposite. According to Cawthon, Chris Columbus has finished the screenplay adaptation and plans to start to filming for Blumhouse Productions in the spring of 2021. Cawthon also revealed a few of the different premises that were considered, including the one that appears to be moving forward (though one has to wonder why the movie can t just be a direct adaptation of the video games themselves).7. Consider, for example, the popular children s book series (and animated TV series) Clifford the Big Red Dog. It was eight years ago in 2012 that we first heard about a Clifford the Big Red Dog movie, which at one point was scheduled for release on April 8, 2016 (yes, over four years ago). More recently, Clifford the Big Red Dog was supposed to have come out earlier this month on November 13th (until the deadly virus delayed it all the way back to November 5, 2021). Clifford the Big Red Dog may now still be almost a year away, but Paramount Pictures decided this week to whet people s appetites regardless, but what we actually got might have caught some people by surprise. Although Clifford the Big Red Dog in book and animated TV form has a very cartoony look, the movie appears to be applying a more life-like CGI approach, which, when you also factor in his size and (unnatural) coloring, makes actually seeing Clifford the Big Red Dog something you have to experience for yourself.On an Apple device? Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (HBO)The threat of nuclear annihilation remained a perennial boogeyman for children of the 1980s, so it was particularly terrifying when news of the Chernobyl disaster spread across the world. HBO s Chernobyl harnesses that anxiety to deliver a bone-chilling reprimand of human arrogance, drawing viewers in by telling some of the smaller stories that played out alongside the big, headline-generating one. Series creator, executive producer, and writer Craig Mazin and director Johan Renck won Emmys for their work here, expertly mixing elements of visceral horror and unsettling dread with deep human drama, and the cast is all aces. Long-time character actor Jared Harris turns in some of his finest work as Valery Legasov, the consultant brought in by the Soviet government to investigate the incident. He s the anchor of the narrative, but he s flanked by Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson in excellent supporting roles – all three of them were nominated for Emmys – while Paul Ritter is downright loathsome as Anatoly Dyatlov, the chief engineer at the plant whose obstinacy led to the catastrophe. It feels almost disrespectful to call this entertainment, but Chernobyl is some of the most compelling drama HBO has crafted in recent memory. – Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorWhere to watch: HBO or HBO Now, FandangoNOW, Amazon, iTunes, VuduCommitment: 5 hours (five-episode miniseries)Mrs. Fletcher: Limited Series (2019) 82% (HBO)Mrs. Fletcher creator Tom Perrotta is one of our generation’s premier miners of suburbia’s dark corners – he wrote the novel Election as well as the screenplay for Little Children. He also knows a thing or two about compelling TV – he EP’d The Leftovers. Here he brings both skills to bear on a story that we’ve seen before – empty nester searching for new meaning when her son leaves college – but never like this. Part of that is due to the series’ incisive and frank treatment of porn and the way in which it has entered the little ticky-tacky homes of American suburbia and smashed open doors and shattered taboos. In Mrs. Fletcher, the titular divorcee rediscovers herself via a number of pornographic genres, while we also see the way a steady diet of hardcore has affected her college-age son’s ability to be intimate. But mostly the series soars thanks to Kathryn Hahn, who is incredible as Eve Fletcher; touchingly lost in her newfound aloneness one moment, giddily seizing control of new opportunities the next. Hahn was another terrible snub for the 2020 Golden Globes. The half-hour comedy stars Matt Berry as Laszlo, Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson – a group of vampire roommates living-dead in Staten Island. Harvey Guillen slays as Lazlo’s human “familiar,” Guillermo. We won’t spoil the 10-episode first season for you, but there are some excellent cameos to look forward to. And with almost two weeks worth of spooky fun, you won’t have ,to worry about running out of story anytime soon. A period piece, Kingdom will subvert your expectations in a lot of ways, not the least of which is the setting. This is not TWD — the zombies run fast, and no one can hide in a mall 400 years in the past. A standout of Netflix’s international programming, Elite has everything you could want in a soapy noir melodrama: tortured rich teens, murder, chic fashion, sex – all while the youths are studying for those pesky exams. Elite finds nuance in its pulp and explores themes like classism, racism, and LGBTQ issues with a surprising amount of realism and grit. Power is one of the central pillars of this show; how its characters use or misuse it to get what they want creates a lot of highly entertaining moments, like seeing the students concoct a plan to deflect blame for a death at a nightclub. It also boasts a soundtrack that rivals Euphoria’s. A highlight to look for is former Mexican child-star-turned-acclaimed-pop-star Danna Paola’s turn as Lucrecia, daughter to the Mexican ambassador in Spain. Lucrecia is the best diva-villain-with-a-secret-heart-of-gold since Blair Waldorf. Netflix offers a dubbed version, but we highly recommend watching the series in its native Spanish language with English subtitles. The film s profile is about to rise much higher in the next year or two, though, because Guillermo del Toro has decided a Nightmare Alley remake will be his next film as director, after the Academy Award-winner The Shape of Water. Leonardo DiCaprio will headline Nightmare Alley in the lead, a carnival showman who rises to fame by pretending to talk to the dead as a medium, taking over the role played by Tyrone Power in the original. The 1947 movie was an adaptation of a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham that did take some liberties with the story (especially the ending), so it s possible that GDT s adaptation will be closer to the source material. Nightmare Alley will start filming in late 2019, and will probably be released sometime in 2020. Speaking of remakes, Guillermo del Toro also talked this week about his former plans for remakes of classic monster movies like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, saying, I don t think it s going to happen. Fresh Developments1. JAMES BOND 25 EVENT CONFIRMS RAMI MALEK, AND MORE (Photo by Well Go USA Entertainment)MGM and Eon Productions, the companies behind the James Bond franchise, staged a big event yesterday at Ian Fleming s Goldeneye estate in Jamaica to promote James Bond 25. Some speculated that the event might reveal the title (it didn t), but there were several casting revelations. As had been previously reported, Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) was confirmed to be the film s villain. The biggest new news was that Jeffrey Wright, who skipped Skyfall and Spectre, will be returning as CIA agent Felix Leiter, joining Daniel Craig s Bond on an international adventure to rescue a kidnapped scientist. Whatever it s called, the 25th official James Bond film will be directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, HBO s True Detective) when it s released on April 8, 2020.2. STEPHEN KING S SALEM S LOT VAMPIRES FINALLY STALKING THE BIG SCREEN (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)This year marks seven years since the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, which was, for the most part, the last successful Hollywood movie featuring traditional vampires (2014 s Dracula Untold, not so much). Sony and Marvel are now filming Morbius (starring Jared Leto) for release next summer (7/31/2020), so that s at least a vampire movie coming out soon. A new project that will be further out is an adaptation of Stephen King s Salem s Lot, which was previously adapted twice as a TV mini-series in 1979 and 2004. Producer James Wan and screenwriter Gary Dauberman previously collaborated on The Conjuring spinoffs Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and the upcoming Annabelle Comes Home, and are now reuniting for Salem s Lot. Stephen King s original 1975 novel is about an author who returns to his hometown to discover that a spooky mansion is now home to a European vampire and his brood. (Note: The proper title of Salem s Lot starts with an apostrophe, because it s an abbreviation of Jerusalem s Lot, which is the town.)3. PETER DINKLAGE LEAVING WESTEROS FOR THE THICKET (Photo by HBO)HBO s Game of Thrones has an extended cast of dozens of actors, so with the show ending, we re in the early stages of an expected deluge of post-Game of Thrones casting announcements. Many of them are European and mostly work outside Hollywood, but one of the stars who very much is a Hollywood star is Peter Dinklage (for example, Avengers: Infinity War). Dinklage s next film will even be produced by Hollywood Gang, which is the company behind the dark and twisted thriller The Thicket. In it, he will star as a fierce bounty hunter named Reginald Shorty Jones, who is hired by a boy in Texas after his sister is kidnapped by a serial killer known as Cut Throat Bill.4. WHO S BEN AFFLECK GONNA CALL? GHOST ARMY (Photo by Universal Pictures)Before he signed on to play Batman in 2013, Ben Affleck s career as director was moving pretty quickly, with three films in five years (Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo), all Certified Fresh. Affleck had to delay filming Live by Night for a while (it eventually came out in 2016), and now it s been another three years since that film. This week, we finally heard what film he will direct next, for what will effectively be only his second film over the last seven years. Affleck will direct and star in Universal Pictures Ghost Army, which will be adapted from the book The Ghost Army of World War II: How One Top-Secret Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound Effects, and Other Audacious Fakery. (The great thing about non-fiction books is how they can relate the whole premise in a subtitle.) One can draw a pretty obvious correlation between Ghost Army and Affleck s Argo, which was also a fact-based drama about how moviemaking techniques were used to carry out a mission (in that case, the liberation of diplomats during the Iran Hostage Crisis). The Ghost Army was also adapted as a PBS documentary in 2013.5. ANGELA BASSETT TO DRINK YOUR GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (Photo by Phil Bray/Fox Searchlight Pictures)Although they re mostly supporting roles, Angela Bassett has been racking up an impressive series of high profile films recently, including Black Panther (as his mom), Bumblebee (as the voice of the villain Shatter), and Mission: Impossible Fallout (as the CIA director). This week, Bassett signed on as one of the leads in an action thriller called Gunpowder Milkshake, as one of the unassuming leaders of a massive armory. She joins two already-signed actresses who are also coming off very popular franchises: Lena Headey stars in HBO s Game of Thrones as Queen Cersei Lannister, and Karen Gillan plays Nebula in Avengers: Endgame (and also co-starred in 2017 s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle).6. COLIN FARRELL, CYCLOPS, AND BRAN STARK ARE VOYAGERS (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.)After an early career that included The Illusionist (73% Certified Fresh) and Limitless (69% Fresh), director Neil Burger ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/neil_burger ) is currently coming off two films below 43% Rotten (Divergent and The Upside). BRITNEY SPEARS GETTING MUSICAL, ONCE UPON A ONE MORE TIME (Photo by Jason LaVeris/Getty Images)This summer, we ll finally get the ninth feature film directed by Quentin Tarantino, the 1960s period piece, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but it won t be the only movie in the next few years (or so) that borrows that naming convention, because Sony Pictures has won the screen rights to an upcoming Broadway musical called Once Upon a One More Time. As you might be able to guess, it will be a fairy tale musical using classic songs by Britney Spears (was Spears career long ago enough now to be considered classic ? #thiswriterisold). The golden oldies that will be featured in the musical will include Circus, Lucky, Toxic, and Oops I Did It Again. There is not yet a writer or director for this movie, or an idea of who might star.2. JENNIFER LOPEZ SAYS MARRY ME TO OWEN WILSON(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant/Getty Images)The romantic comedy has almost vanished from the big screen (except for rare films like Isn t It Romantic?), but the genre is starting to enjoy a comeback, thanks in large part to streaming sites like Netflix. The distributors that are probably going to commit most fully to something like this are the indies or smaller studios that mostly focus on fringe or counterprogramming genres anyway. One such company is STXfilms, and this week, they moved forward with the romantic comedy Marry Me with Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Lopez will play a pop star who flees from her cheating groom at the altar and picks a random guy (Wilson) from the audience and marries him instead. Marry Me will be directed by Kat Coiro, whose three previous films all received Rotten Tomatometer scores.1. CHLOE GRACE MORETZ TO STAR IN TOM AND JERRY(Photo by Shane Mahood/Focus Features)Although their long-in-development sequel to Space Jam is the project that gets the most media attention (thanks to LeBron James), Warner Bros. is also moving along with their plans to reboot Tom and Jerry in just under two years (4/16/2021, to be precise). We ve known for a while that Tom and Jerry will be a live action/animation hybrid (in the tradition of 1945 s Anchors Aweigh), with the title cat and mouse being mute characters (so they won t have any voice actors). The lead human, we learned this week, will be Chloe Grace Moretz, who will play a hotel worker who hires a cat named Tom to get rid of a pesky mouse named Jerry who has taken up residence there. Tom and Jerry is the week s most Rotten Idea not because of Moretz, but because it s going to be directed by Tim Story, who hasn t directed a Fresh movie that wasn t a Kevin Hart comedy concert film since 2002.Like this? After years in the making, James Cameron’s pet project – the dystopian manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel – is finally on its way to theaters, albeit with Robert Rodriguez in the director’s seat. Is it worth the wait? The first wave of reviews are leaning negatively, but the gist is pretty clear that, once again, Cameron and Co. are delivering big, eye-candy spectacle with a script that doesn’t do the visuals justice. Alita: Battle Angel might have won the top spot, but a surprising showing for Rebel Wilson rom-com Isn’t It Romantic? could be a victory in and of itself. Queen of the Crop: Alita Wins The Battle, But Could Lose The War (Photo by 20th Century Fox)The Robert Rodriguez/James Cameron collaboration Alita: Battle Angel (59% on the Tomatometer) had been gestating since the early 2000s and was in post-production for nearly two years before its release this weekend. Alita’s .3 million is good enough for 12th all-time over Presidents’ Day weekend, but with its Valentine’s Day opening it stands at million.The film wisely avoided the battle against Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns over the end-of-2018 holiday, though a meager start is not going to calm the waters in the spending department. Clocking in at a reported 0 million budget (not counting distribution costs) means that eyes will be focused on its international output, where it currently stands with an additional million.That’s not a terrible start if its goal was 0 million domestic. It has already surpassed the final grosses of 2017’s Ghost in the Shell (.5 million) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It would take 2.7 million for Alita to be Rodriguez’s highest-grossing film ever, but it could be at the cost of being his most expensive flop to date as well. Rotten Returns: Happy Death Day Sequel Well Behind Original’s Numbers (Photo by Universal Pictures)Coming in at a shocking low this weekend was Happy Death Day 2U. Blumhouse’s sequel to its million 2017 hit made just million over the four-day weekend, and .7 million since its opening on Wednesday. That is considerably less than the original’s three-day opening weekend of million. Critics were still generally on board with the franchise, as it stands at 67% on the Tomatometer (down from 71% the first time around) and the notoriously cost-efficient Blumhouse is not going to lose too much sleep even after ballooning the budget from .7 million to a whopping million. However, expectations ranging from -30 million for 2U’s first six days amounts to a bummer. The Top Ten And Beyond: Glass Reaches 0 Million, But The Upside Gains (Photo by Universal Pictures)The other new wide release of the week, Isn’t It Romantic?, has managed .8 million since its opening on Valentine’s Day. That’s nearly halfway to the total of star Rebel Wilson’s 2016 rom-com How To Be Single, which finished with .8 million after opening two days before the card-and-flowers holiday. Still, Isn’t It Romantic’s million production is going to need some help to turn a profit for Warner Bros.The studio’s Lego Movie 2: The Second Part grossed .3 million over the four-day weekend. Of films to open between -35 million, its three-day weekend of .2 million was less than Identity Thief, Ransom, and Lethal Weapon 4 — all R-rated films. Those three made between million and million after ten days, while Lego 2 sat at .6 million. The good news is that the animated sequel is not far behind the 0-137 million grosses of that adult fare, but it is still significantly less than both the original film and The Lego Batman Movie.It took 28 days, but M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass finally passed the 0 million mark — on Valentine’s Day. It will soon be joined by The Upside, the first big surprise hit of 2019, which could hit the benchmark by the end of next weekend. For the fifth straight weekend the Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston remake has dropped less than 30 percent from the previous week, and that’s even with the film dropping 591 theaters this weekend. It’s a feat that Oscar nominee Green Book has pulled off for the ninth straight weekend, with that film’s total box office haul now standing at more than million. Meanwhile, Paramount’s What Men Want is in a position where million would be the lowball for its final gross. This Time Last Year: Black Panther Began Its Run At History (Photo by © Marvel Studios)Black Panther had the fifth-highest opening weekend of all time, with 2 million over the Presidents’ Day weekend. Including the Monday holiday, the Oscar-nominated comic book movie posted a grand total of 2.1 million and was well on its way to becoming the third-highest-grossing domestic title ever. On the lower end that weekend, Aardman Animation suffered a dud with Early Man making just .19 million. PureFlix’s biblical effort, Samson, did not have much strength either with just a .9 million start, but The Greatest Showman continued to flex its muscles by crossing the 0 million mark. Thanks to Ryan Coogler and Marvel the Top Ten films grossed 7.3 million over the weekend and more than 3 million during the four-day holiday. The films averaged 55.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top Ten grossed 5.1 Million over the three-day weekend, 7 million over the four-day, and averaged 60.1% on the Tomatometer. Expect it to top the box office next weekend and add to an international total that currently sits at million. The first two films have grossed a worldwide total of .116 billion. Also expanding into wide release is Stephen Merchant’s Fighting with My Family, the story of WWE’s Paige that stars Florence Pugh. The film opened in just four theaters this weekend to 1,625, giving it the highest per-screen-average of the week (.906). Disney’s live-action remakes have made collective billions at the box office. Although it’s early, the latest entry, Tim Burton’s dark take on Dumbo, could be the first failure among the recent films. Meanwhile, Harmony Korine s latest film fails to make a Spring Breakers-level splash, and Us and Captain Marvel continue to impress.King of the Crop: Dumbo Leads But Is Still Very Far Behind(Photo by Disney)While Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book and Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast made a collective billion-plus worldwide, it was Burton’s Alice In Wonderland that really began the live-action remake trend back in 2010. That film remains Burton’s biggest success, a billion-dollar spring hit that was also the second-biggest opening in Disney’s history at the time. (It is now the 17th.) Though Dumbo was not expected to challenge that 6.1 million start, it was also expected to do a lot better than million this weekend.With a 0 million production budget, Dumbo is clearly counting on the international dollar to save it. Even with optimistic projections domestically, no live-action film opening between -49 million stateside has ever reached 0 million. (Disney’s Wild Hogs came closest with 8 million.)Don’t blame critics on this one, as Dumbo’s 50% score on the Tomatometer is not much lower than Alice in Wonderland’s 51%. But that film was also able to market a very bankable (at the time) Johnny Depp, putting him front and center on every poster. Meanwhile, the trailers for Dumbo almost went out of their way to reveal more of the circus than the film’s high-flying star. We’ll update its progress next week.Rotten Returns: The Beach Bum(Photo by NEON / VICE)Neon had a great little story this year with the documentary Apollo 11. With .65 million in the bank, it is the company’s third-highest-grossing title after I, Tonya ( million) and the documentary Three Identical Strangers (.3 million). Harmony Korine s The Beach Bum (51% on the Tomatometer) is likely to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in its catalog, but the 1,005-theater launch only produced .8 million this weekend. That’s the fourth-worst per-theater average for Neon ahead of just Borg vs. McEnroe, Revenge, and the million Sundance pickup Assassination Nation, which had the studio’s widest launch (1,403 theaters) and opened to just .05 million for a per-theater average of 3. In March 2013, A24 released Korine’s last film, Spring Breakers, into 1,104 theaters in its second weekend, where it grossed .85 million on its way to .1 million total.The Top Ten And Beyond: Captain Marvel and Us Continue to Impress(Photo by @ Universal)Last October, Blumhouse released David Gordon Green’s Halloween, which grossed 6 million in its first ten days. Halloween finished its run with just 9.3 million even as it grossed .4 million in its second weekend. However, Us second weekend made .6 million — a smaller drop (52.7 percent) than Michael Myers’ (58.8 percent). Of the 21 films to have grossed between 3-133 million in their first ten days, only six have failed to reach 0 million. Halloween was one of them. Us is forging a path to another incredible milestone, and it has already grossed 4 million worldwide.Captain Marvel maintained its impressive pace with another million this weekend, the 27th-best fourth weekend ever for a wide release. With more than 3 million, it is the 21st best-performing film of all time after 24 days and well on its way to 0 million. Every film to have grossed 0 million in 24 days has reached 0 million, and Captain Marvel’s fourth weekend was higher than six of them (The Dark Knight Rises, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) In other milestone news, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World passed 0 million worldwide this weekend.PureFlix’s abortion film Unplanned made the top five with .1 million, the second-largest opening in the Christian-based company’s history after God’s Not Dead 2. Five Feet Apart continues to enjoy a rather healthy stay in the top five, dropping just another 26.9 percent to .2 million for a running total of nearly million — not bad for a million production. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral passed million and may just have enough in the tank to surpass Boo! A Madea Halloween to become the second-highest-grossing film of his directorial career.Finally, Bleecker Street expanded its harrowing true-life terrorist drama Hotel Mumbai to 924 theaters, and it grossed .1 millon. Also blessed with strong early reviews is the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. It boasts a 91% thanks to reviews from closing night of SXSW, and with a solid opening weekend could end up becoming the third-highest-grossing King adaptation to date. Finally, STX releases the educational drama The Best of Enemies with Taraji P. Only four films this year have managed to open to more than million and if the Saw series has anything in common with Raya and the Last Dragon it may be the disappointment in not being able to join that exclusive club in 2021. Instead, the latest Saw film, Spiral, looks to become another footnote suggesting that even brand names are not bringing back people to theaters. Yet.King of the Crop: Spiral Wins the Weekend But Leaves Questions In Its WakeThe Saw series was on a seven-year hiatus after “The Final Chapter” when Jigsaw was launched in 2017 to a .6 million start. The previous low for the franchise was Saw VI (.1 million), when people decided they would rather have a Paranormal Activity film for their October horror than another Saw entry. After James Wan’s original opened to .2 million in 2004, the next four entries opened between million and million. Nobody expected Spiral: From the Book of Saw to approach those lofty numbers, even on the downslope of the pandemic. But it was widely expected to come somewhere in the vicinity of those Saw VI opening numbers. Though: Is it the pandemic or are people just tired of the Jigsaw shtick altogether?In terms of horror comps for 2021, a .7 million start is certainly better than The Unholy (.35 million) or Separation (.8 million). It is also better than last week’s Wrath of Man (.3 million). Heck, that makes it good enough for the fifth best opening of the year. But do not expect this film to chug along the way Nobody’s .82 million opening did to over million, so far. The last five films in the Saw series dropped between 60.6% and 67.6% after their first weekends. Wrath of Man just dropped 55% from its number 1 perch last weekend to gross .7 million this weekend. Assuming Spiral holds on to a narrow margin for first place next week we could be looking at the lowest number 1 gross since the weekend of February 19, when The Croods: A New Age made .71 million. The lowest since then was Raya and the Last Dragon’s third weekend victory, with .12 million. The Disney film has now officially surpassed Tom Jerry to become the second-highest grossing film of 2021 and the fifth-highest of the pandemic. What the 91st Academy Awards lacked in hosts, it certainly made up for in surprises – at least at the tail-end of the night. (Yes, your ears and eyes were working: that was Julia Roberts naming Green Book as Best Picture and not Roma.) It was also a night for history to be made, with the likes of Spike Lee winning his first Oscar, and Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler becoming the first African Americans to win awards for Costume and Production Design, respectively. Joined by Adam Lambert, Queen opened the show performing “We Will Rock You” and then “We Are the Champions,” forcing all actors caught on camera to rock out enthusiastically/awkwardly (Javier Bardem for the win).Fey, Rudolph, Poehler Show they Would Have Made the Perfect HostsSome viewers got their hopes up that perhaps we would get hosts after all when Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler entered the stage following a montage of moments from the year in film. And while they did not stick around to guide us through the night, their introduction to the Best Supporting Actress showed the Academy might be wise to let them next year. Particular highlights: Rudolph’s sultry “Wakanda plans you got later?” to Chadwick Boseman, and her perfect Gaga wail.Regina King Wins Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) 95%If Beale Street Could Talk co-star Regina King was named Best Supporting Actress, and – after an assist getting to the stage from Captain American himself – delivered a heartfelt speech, celebrating her mother, who accompanied her to the awards. “I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone,” said a teary King. She is the first winner in any acting category to win the Oscar without being nominated for a SAG or BAFTA since Marcia Gay Harden in 2000.Brian Tyree Henry and Melissa McCarthy Wear All the CostumesBrian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) introduced the Best Costume Category wearing outfits inspired by all five nominees. We will never forget the image of McCarthy opening the envelope with a rabbit puppet.Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler Make History With Wins for Black Panther (2018) 96%Black Panther costumer Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, beating out favorite Sandy Powell who was nominated twice for Mary Poppins Returns and The Favourite. The 30-year veteran began her acceptance speech by thanking fellow nominee Spike Lee; the BlacKkKlansman director gave Carter her first job on School Daze, and they later collaborated for her Oscar-nominated work on Malcolm X. Next up was the award for Best Production Design, and in back-to-back historic Black Panther wins, Hannah Beachler became the first Black woman to win for Production Design. The production designer behind Beyonce’s Lemonade and all of director Ryan Coogler’s movies gave an emotional speech during which she thanked Coogler for believing in her.Mahershala Ali Wins Second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Green Book (2018) 77%Some pundits thought Can You Ever Forgive Me? co-star Richard E. Grant was set to cause an upset here, but favorite Mahershala Ali took home the prize for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley. The win makes Ali only the second ever Black actor to win two acting Oscars (the other being Denzel Washington). Ali dedicated his award to his grandmother, “who has been in my ear my entire life telling me, if at first I don’t succeed, try, try again.”Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Generate Jackson-Ally Magic with “Shallow”(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)They didn’t even need an intro… The Best Song favorites performed the final song of the night, semi-recreating A Star Is Born’s memorable concert scene: camera lingering behind them, epic build, that wail. “Shallow” – of course – went on to win Best Song.Spike Lee – Finally – Wins His First OscarBOOM-SHAKA-LACKA! Spike Lee won his first competitive Oscar after five nominations. (He was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2016). Accepting the Best Adapted Screenplay award for BlacKkKlansman – along with Kevin Willmott, David Rabinowitz, and Charlie Wachtel – the Brooklyn native stayed on brand: bombastic and honest. During his speech, he drew attention to the date of his historic win, 400 years almost to the day since the first slaves arrived in the United States. In February, Black History Month, the country s most celebrated Black filmmaker was handed the award from Brie Larson and his longtime friend Samuel L. Jackson. It is the third year in a row that a Black writer has won for screenwriting: Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out last year and Barry Jenkins won Best Adapted Screenplay in 2017 for Moonlight.A Best Actress Mega SurpriseThe Oscars proved it still has the capacity to surprise, saving one of the biggest shocks of the night to almost the very end: The Favourite star Olivia Colman upset favorite Glenn Close in the Best Actress category. Less of a shock: Colman gave arguably the best and funniest speech of the night, opening with “It’s genuinely quite stressful” and ending by simply exclaiming, “Lady Gaga!”Alfonso Cuarón Continues Hot Streak for Mexican DirectorsAlfonso Cuarón’s win for Best Director means that Mexican directors have won the category five times since 2014: Alejandro González Iñárritu for Birdman and The Revenant, Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, and Cuarón for Gravity and, now, Roma.Green Book (2018) 77% Beats Out Favorite Roma to Win Best PictureIf the Best Actress win was one of the biggest wins of the night, it’s closest competition was in the Best Picture category, where Green Book won ahead of favorite Roma. Some pundits had a feeling this could happen, particularly given the Oscars’ preferential voting system, but it was inconceivable to others that any film could stand in the way of Cuarón s masterpiece.
