1. 传奇演义
Next year, the annual Sundance Film Festival is nestled right in the middle of one of the busiest awards seasons in recent memory. The 2020 awards calendar was shortened by two weeks, which is causing problems for studios and attendees, but Sundance is still a prestigious stop on the calendar that few would want to miss. The snow-covered Utah event, which comes several months ahead of the other major festivals, is still the place for high-dollar film acquisitions. Last year, it was where we first spotted Shia LaBeouf s deeply personal Honey Boy and where Oscar hopeful Lulu Wang s The Farewell first charmed its way into our hearts. Other 2019 favorites Apollo 11, Fighting with my Family, and American Factory also got their starts at Sundance.Every year, journalists, filmmakers, studios, producers, and film fans alike head to Park City with one question on their mind: Who will break out of the pack this year? After looking over next year s offerings, these are our picks for the can t-miss films of Sundance 2020 and why we are so excited to catch them.Zola (2020) 88%(Photo by Sundance)Director: Janicza BravoScreenwriter: Janicza Bravo, Jeremy O. HarrisCast: Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Nicholas Braun, Colman DomingoSynopsis:  In 2015, Twitter user @_zolarmoon (the account is currently suspended) famously tweeted “wanna hear a story about why me this b h here fell out???????? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.” Over the next few days she regaled the internet with a tale of how two young women met each other, became fast friends, and took a fateful trip from Detroit to Florida that turned into a waking nightmare. Why we want to see it: Ever since it was announced that the viral adventure from @_zolarmoon was being made into a feature, both the internet and film fans have been counting the days. Penned by Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris and writer/director Janicza Bravo, we anticipate a hard-hitting satire that will pull no punches and is sure to have people talking.Bad Hair (2020) 62%(Photo by Sundance)Director and screenwriter: Justin SimienCast: Elle Lorraine, Vanessa Williams, Jay Pharoah, Lena Waithe, Blair Underwood, Laverne CoxSynopsis: A woman sells her soul for a good weave, and then real horror ensures. Why we want to see it: Chris Rock s Good Hair documentary meets Get Out? Yeah, we re gonna have to check this one out. Black women s hair and hairstyles have been a subject for conversations about discrimination throughout history. Seeing the topic treated as a horror-satire is beyond inventive and exactly what we would expect from Justin Simien, the man behind Dear White People.Taylor Swift: Miss Americana (2020) 91%(Photo by Sundance)Director and screenwriter: Lana WilsonCast: Taylor SwiftSynopsis: Taylor Swift s new music documentary about her life on and off stage. Why we want to see it: Okay, Swifties, assemble! Taylor Swift is leaving the CGI fur-covered flop Cats in the past with this new documentary. The behind-the-scenes doc is sure to feature her feud with the Kardashian-Wests, her legal battle with former manager Scooter Braun, and her recent efforts to be politically conscious, and it could also serve as additional outreach to those outside her core fanbase.Wendy (2020) 42%Director: Benh ZeitlinScreenwriters: Benh Zeitlin, Eliza ZeitlinCast: Devin France, Yashua Mack, Gage Naquin, Gavin Naquin, Ahmad Cage, Krzysztof MeynSynopsis: Re-imagining of the Peter Pan story from Wendy s perspective. Why we want to see it: It has been eight years since Beasts of the Southern Wild hit theaters on its way to four Oscar nominations, and we have been patiently waiting to see what writer/director Benh Zeitlin does next. A newly released trailer has also grabbed our attention, as his signature fairy tale-like visuals look to provide a thrilling new twist on the classic tale of Peter Pan.Downhill (2020) 38%Directors: Jim Rash, Nat FaxonScreenwriters: Jesse Armstrong, Nat Faxon, Jim RashCast: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell, Zach Woods, Zoë Chao, Miranda OttoSynopsis: An avalanche hits during a family ski vacation, forcing an apathetic couple to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other. Why we want to see it: Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell (a.k.a. Selina Kyle and Ron Burgundy): Need we say more? If so, we can add that this dark-comedy adaptation is based on the Cannes prize-winning and Golden Globe-nominated Swedish film Force Majeure. If Jim Rash and Nat Faxon can replicate half the brilliance of the original, we are in for a treat.Spree (2020) 67%(Photo by Sundance)Director: Eugene KotlyarenkoScreenwriter: Gene McHugh, Eugene KotlyarenkoCast:  Joe Keery, Sasheer Zamata, David Arquette, Kyle Mooney, Mischa Barton, Josh OvalleSynopsis: An Uber driver uses technology to find internet fame in a horrifying way.Why we want to see it: In a film that seems ripped from a host of 2019 headlines, this social media-skewering farce features a hilarious cast, including Joe Kerry in his first major work outside of Stranger Things. SNL alums Sasheer Zamata and Kyle Mooney are both accomplished improv-ers, so we re also looking forward to the film we hope will keep us guessing while we laugh.Four Good Days (2020) 53%(Photo by Sundance)Director: Rodrigo GarciaScreenwriter: Rodrigo Garcia, Eli SaslowCast: Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Stephen Root, Joshua LeonardSynopsis: An aging opioid addict must stay sober for four days, or else she will be denied treatment. Why we want to see it: Glenn Close, the most Oscar-nominated living actor without a win, isn t letting anything keep her down. Four Good Days hopes to put Close back into the conversation again, and we can t wait to see if it will finally mean a trophy for her efforts.Worth (2020) 80%(Photo by MadRiver Pictures)Director: Sara ColangeloScreenwriter: Max BorensteinCast: Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, Tate Donovan, Talia Balsam, Laura BenantiSynopsis: Inspired by true events, this drama centers on Kenneth Feinberg, who is appointed Special Master of the 9/11 Fund and, over his years as its head, discovers what life is truly worth. Why we want to see it: We have reason to be cautious about the appetite for 9/11 narratives, but as we inch closer to the 20-year anniversary, we have to assume this new tale about the victim s fund might prove more interesting to moviegoers. Starring Micheal Keaton in a role built to chew the scenery, this is not something we could pass up.The Last Thing He Wanted (2020) 5%(Photo by Sundance)Director: Dee ReesScreenwriter: Marco Villalobos, Dee ReesCast: Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, Willem Dafoe, Rosie PerezSynopsis: A journalist is forced to confront her guilt when an errand on behalf of her father places her in the midst of a story she is trying to break. Why we want to see it: Dee Rees last effort, Mudbound, was a critical hit and garnered four Oscar nominations, so we are more than a little interested in her next book-to-film adaptation, The Last Thing He Wanted, a thriller about what to do when you have been handed an unwanted legacy. Anne Hathaway is already being penciled in for early 2021 awards buzz, assuming the screenplay has the punch of the 1996 novel that inspired it.We Are Freestyle Love Supreme (2020) 90%(Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)Director: Andrew FriedCast: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Anthony Veneziale, Christopher Jackson, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Chris SullivanSynopsis: An inside look at the founding members of the hip-hop improv group Freestyle Love Supreme and its rise from the basement of the Drama Bookshop in NYC to the Broadway stage. Why we want to see it: Quite possibly the hardest-working man in Hollywood, Lin-Manuel Miranda gives us an inside look at one of his first but most enduring projects, the hip-hop freestyle group Freestyle Love Supreme. The accomplished lyricist and freestyler is joined by long-time collaborators for this documentary, and we re bouncing in our seat with anticipation to see the origins of his live skills. One of two projects Miranda brings to Park City, the Freestyle Love Supreme documentary kicks off his very busy 2020, which also features the long-awaited film adaptation of his first Broadway musical In The Heights.Promising Young Woman (2020) 90%Director and screenwriter: Emerald FennellCast: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Jennifer CoolidgeSynopsis: Everyone said Cassie was a promising young woman until something abruptly derailed her future. Nothing in Cassie’s life is as it appears: she’s smart, cunning, and living a double life by night. Now, Cassie has a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling tale of revenge. Why we want to see it: A #MeToo revenge thriller from one of the minds behind Killing Eve and starring Carrie Mulligan – that was enough to grab our attention. But after a stylized trailer dropped earlier this week showcasing a pitch-perfect cover of Britney Spears Toxic,  A Promising Woman has quickly become one of our most anticipated films not just of the Sundance Film festival, but of the entire year. The Sundance Film Festival runs January 23-February 2.Like this? LADY BIRD DIRECTOR GRETA GERWIG TAPPED FOR BARBIE MOVIE(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The toy company Mattel has been attempting to get a live action Barbie movie going for a few years now, including an effort at Sony that almost featured first Amy Schumer, and then Anne Hathaway. The Barbie movie eventually moved to Warner Bros. late last year, at which point their Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie also started talks to star in the film. At first, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had also been in talks to helm Barbie, but this week, Warner Bros. instead hired Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%), who will also adapt the screenplay with Lady Bird co-writer Noah Baumbach. The premise isn t known yet, but it s expected that it will no longer be anything like the story it would have been with Schumer or Hathaway. Warner Bros. had previously scheduled Barbie for May 8, 2020, but this news may mean it will be delayed.3. EMMA STONE AND BRAD PITT MAY CO-STAR IN DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Jef Hernandez, Gregorio Binuya/Everett Collection)We re now less than two weeks from the release of Quentin Tarantino s ninth film as director, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is his tribute to the Los Angeles of the 1960s. Tarantino is not the only director revisiting the Hollywood of the past, though, as La La Land director Damien Chazelle is preparing for his next film, Babylon, which will be set in the silent era of the 1920s. Emma Stone is now in talks to reunite with Chazelle on Babylon, which might start filming before her starring role in Disney s 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella (12/23/2020). In a move that would really tie Babylon to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is also reportedly circling the film. Babylon will reportedly be an R-rated movie in the three hour range with a budget of between million and 0 million, with Lionsgate and Paramount among the studios vying to distribute.4. POP SINGER HARRY STYLES MAY JOIN DISNEY S THE LITTLE MERMAID AS PRINCE ERIC (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)In just a few weeks, we ve gone from not knowing when Walt Disney Pictures might ever remake The Little Mermaid to having almost every major role cast (pretty much everyone but King Triton and Sebastian the singing crab). All in the same week, actually, Disney started negotiating with Melissa McCarthy (as the octopus sea witch Ursula), Awkwafina (as Scuttle the seagull), Room star Jacob Tremblay (as Flounder the fish), and Halle Bailey as the title character of Ariel. We can also now report that Disney is in early talks with One Direction pop singer Harry Styles to star as the film s romantic male lead, Prince Eric. The live action remake of The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns).5. BAZ LUHRMANN FINDS HIS ELVIS(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Following the staggering success of Bohemian Rhapsody and the pretty good numbers for Elton John s Rocketman, the musical biopic has come back in a big way. There are several similar projects now in the works, including biopics for Boy George and Aretha Franklin (with Jennifer Hudson attached), and a Mamma Mia! style jukebox musical featuring the music of Prince. Right up there with The Beatles, one of the biggest stars never to receive a big budget Hollywood biopic is the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, but that s exactly what Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann is getting ready to work on next. In the same week as the Little Mermaid casting news earlier this month, we also learned about the various contenders to play Elvis (including Ansel Elgort, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Miles Teller, and One Direction s Harry Styles, who will apparently co-star in The Little Mermaid instead.) Baz Luhrmann s Elvis will be Austin Butler of MTV s The Shannara Chronicles, with Tom Hanks already attached to co-star as Colonel Tom Parker.6. GIRLS TRIP DIRECTOR TAKING OVER SPACE JAM 2(Photo by Michael Gibson/©Universal Pictures)Until this week, Space Jam 2 was to have marked the big budget studio debut of director Terence Nance, whose first film was the 2013 independent drama An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. Citing differing visions, Warner Bros. and producer and star LeBron James have now hired director Malcolm D. Lee to direct Space Jam 2. Although his most recent film, Night School, received a Rotten Tomatometer score at 27%, Lee s two prior films both received Certified Fresh scores: Barbershop: The Next Cut at 90% and Girls Trip at 91%. We don t yet know which NBA stars will be joining LeBron yet, but Don Cheadle signed on last week. Warner Bros. has scheduled Space Jam 2 for July 16, 2021, which is the week after Indiana Jones 5, and the week before Mission: Impossible 7.7. FIRST TEASER TRAILER REVEALS WHAT THE HUNT IS ABOUT (SPOILER: IT S ABOUT A HUNT) (Photo by Universal Pictures)There was once a time when people often didn t know that a movie even existed, much less what the film was about, before the first trailer came out. These days, however, mainstream cinema is dominated by sequels, remakes, and adaptations of comics and video games, the news of which break months or years ahead of time (for example: this column). In that climate, then, it s rather refreshing when we have a movie like The Hunt (9/27/2019), which was just described as a political thriller until the teaser trailer was released this week. As it turns out, the title was quite literal, as the movie now appears to be nearly a remake of the classic story and film, The Most Dangerous Game, as twelve strangers find themselves being hunted by the uber-wealthy on a private estate.Rotten Idea2. ARCADE CLASSIC SPACE INVADERS GETTING AN ADAPTATION(Photo by Producers Distribution Agency/Courtesy Everett Collection)This year s Pokémon Detective Pikachu made Tomatometer history with the first Fresh rating (at 67%) ever for a mainstream video game movie. While it s great that this long-standing Rotten record was broken, it s only a mere step in the right direction for the genre;  video game movies still trend towards Rotten, even though we continue to hope that will change someday. One of the oldest video game franchises is Space Invaders, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year in 2018, Warner Bros. has been developing a Space Invaders movie for several years now. This week, the Space Invaders movie moved forward with the hiring of screenwriter Greg Russo, who is also working on another video game movie, the Mortal Kombat reboot (3/5/2021). Good luck, Greg!1. STRANGER THINGS BILLY REVEALS POWER RANGERS TO BE REBOOTED YET AGAIN (Photo by © Lionsgate)Ostensibly, one of the reasons a movie might cast several young up-and-comers is that if there are ever sequels, the franchise might benefit from getting in early on the careers of promising young stars. For example, just two years after the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, its cast seems to be in a pretty great place, as the Pink Ranger was played by Naomi Scott (Jasmine from Aladdin), and the Red Ranger was played by Dacre Montgomery (Billy from Stranger Things). (And that s without mentioning Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, or Barry star Bill Hader as the voice of Alpha 5.) So, it was a crazy headscratcher this week when Dacre Montgomery revealed that Power Rangers is being rebooted once again, with another completely new cast. Although it is true that the 2017 reboot received a Rotten score at 50%, that was actually a step up from the older films, like the first movie in 1995, which was Rotten at 37%.Like this? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
(Photo by Merie Weismiller Wallace / © Focus Features / Courtesy Everett Collection)Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Congratulations on the film. When I saw it earlier this year, it took me by complete surprise because I think, like a lot of people, I d gone in thinking I was going to get something a bit more Atomic Blonde or Britney from the “Toxic” music video, and this was a much more grounded, real story and went in directions I was not expecting. Was the goal to tell a more relatable revenge story?Emerald Fennell: I love the revenge genre. I just think it s one of the most pleasurable, cathartic things. But I think that I wanted, for a while, to see if it was possible to make a revenge movie that had all of the pleasures of the genre but had a very real woman at the center of it, kind of behaving in a way that I think real women do. So part of that was thinking: What would I do? If I really wanted to go on my revenge journey, what could I do? I m not very handy, and certainly no good with a machete, so what s within my power? And it started from there.Do you think the fact that people might go in, like I did, expecting something more typical of the genre works to the film’s advantage?Fennell: Absolutely. It s sort of designed to undercut and use those tropes and twist those tropes. It’s always fun [when someone] has a familiarity with the genre so that you can kind of surprise them; that was always very much intentional and really very fun in the writing, trying to find those ways of being surprising. I hope that it s just as gripping and enjoyable as the more traditional version would be, but it also kind of maybe packs a more personal punch.(Photo by © Focus Features)One other thing that may surprise viewers is that you ve chosen to examine the #MeToo moment and rape culture not by looking at a case that might be more sensational – sort of a Weinstein-esque, cut-and-dried, black-and-white case. Rather, this is more the stuff we hear about on college campuses all the time, stuff that we ve probably touched in our real lives in some way – more “Cat Person” or Kavanaugh. Was that your entry point? To tackle #MeToo in a way many people probably have some connection to, even if they don t think of it in that way?Fennell: I guess, [but] it wasn t as deliberate at that. I m not really interested in heroes and villains. I m really interested in good people doing bad things, and growing up as I did in the noughties, this was just endemic, just completely normal. It was the punchline of every Hollywood comedy movie, getting girls drunk. Every coming-of-age story was like: “Give her a drink.” Is there a drunk girl here? “Great!” It was on network TV shows. It was so normal. And that is what is so deeply disturbing to me, is that it s very easy when it s villains, it s very easy when it s people that you don t like. What s very complicated is when it s something that, as you say, almost everyone has an experience with, to some degree, because it was normalized. That s chilling. And where do we go from there, then, when everyone feels slightly differently? Everyone s kind of making their own excuses; nobody s really willing to talk about it openly. So that s kind of where Cassie s journey begins. If there isn t anything wrong with this, why do you feel so attacked or freaked out? I think it s just an interesting place to start.(Photo by © Focus Features)It s interesting to hear you mention the noughties pop culture. You and I both grew up as teens in that era. When you mentioned that culture, all these films came flooding back to me. There s been a lot of talk about grappling with those cultural artifacts; and regarding the ’80s, we saw Molly Ringwald s essay in The New Yorker doing just that, looking at the John Hughes films that she was a part of. Do you have a view as to how we look back on those things, now that elements of them do feel problematic when put under a modern microscope?Fennell: Well, I think the way you hope that society and culture moves on is that we learn as we go, which means you have to find merit in things that maybe have stuff that s problematic. Obviously, I think lots of people think that this film is very sort of scorched-earth, but actually, I do think that, for me, so much of the movie is about forgiveness and redemption and the possibility of those things. But those things only come after some honesty and some self-scrutiny and apology.I do feel like certainly some I m sort of careful never to shame any particular movies, because I think actually times do change, and there ll be things in 20 years, I m sure, that my children will find problematic about stuff. So, I think in order for any of us to move forward in any artistic medium and as a society, [we have to] understand things will change, and that s okay. At the same time, ignoring it isn t useful, so I think it s just important that we acknowledge that there s some stuff that isn t great. But that s of its time, I suppose.(Photo by © Focus Features)You’ve said that you wanted this film not to be a treatise, but to be fun and to entertain. One of the things I think people will love, in addition to the thriller elements and the revenge elements, is the hilarious dialogue, particularly from some of the boys Cassie picks up. I was thinking about the scene with Christopher Mintz-Plasse in the apartment, where he tells her about his novel and offers her “kumquat liqeur.” It’s so cringey. How fun was it to write the most dickish things guys could possibly say in that situation?Fennell: So fun. I love all that stuff, and also stuff like the costumes – giving Sam Richardson a leather trilby and boot-cut jeans with leather shoes. And with Neil, who s Chris Mintz-Plasse s character, we designed the name of the fake album that he s snorting coke off, and we decided to be very, kind of, culture-y appropriate-y. So there are a lot of dreamcatchers. Every woman who worked on this film in the crew, when we went to the set after it had been dressed, they all went: “Yeah, I ve been in this room.”There s so much pleasure in that. That s why I think, partly, the only way of communicating this kind of stuff really effectively is with humor. Because although it s hard material – there are moments in this movie that are abjectly not funny – for me, communicating anything really serious, I ve only ever been able to do that like this. I m only sad that the Chris Mintz-Plasse scene is much shorter than it was [originally], just because the movie is long; the details of his novel are missing [in the final film], but there s a lot of detail about his novel, set in the first person, over the course of one night in New York, from different people s perspective it goes on and on and on and on and on. And there was lots of great stuff about him making her breakfast in bed and his pronunciation of eggs hollandaise [said with a silent “h”]. That stuff, that s so much fun, always.(Photo by Merie Weismiller Wallace / © Focus Features / Courtesy Everett Collection)And Cassie s [dialogue] I love writing, I just love it, I find it so pleasurable. I really, really did want to make a movie that was accessible, that wasn t just for people who d considered this stuff very deeply, but it would be enjoyable and appealing for everyone to see. I never wanted it to be a very bleak, depressing, earnest film. Even though it is, in many ways, all of those things. I tried as best I could to make it a pleasure to watch.Speaking of dialogue, the first spoken words you hear in the movie are f k her, and I was like, okay, that s a bold start and a statement! And the other thing that stood out was how frequently characters used the phrases crazy bitch and nice guy,” which are the exact phrases we so often see people instinctively go to when it comes to labeling men and women, particularly in a he-said/she-said situation. Was that repetition conscious? Fennell: Definitely, I think so. It s hard to have these discussions in a very, completely unique way, because actually, we fall back so quickly on the clichés. You see it with Dean Walker [Connie Britton; in the film, Walker dismissed a victim’s story because the accused was a nice guy ] and the way that she speaks: Well, you know It s all of the things we ve heard with these incidences. And I think, again, it s a mark of people who haven t really interrogated something themselves very much, that actually they just speak in these quite clichéd, old-fashioned terms. Certainly, the crazy f king bitch thing. As Carey s present, I gave her a necklace that said Crazy F king Bitch on it, because I do just think, honestly, I ve definitely come to a stage in my life where I really think of that as a compliment.(Photo by © Focus Features)When it came to casting the so-called nice guys of the movie, it feels like you went through a Rolodex and said, Who are the nicest-seeming men in Hollywood? You’ve got Adam Brody and Max Greenfield and Sam Richardson… Was the idea to cast these people that we know and love from other roles?Fennell: Well, it s a couple of things. I think they re all genuinely brilliant, so I knew that they d be able to do this, but they re kind of playing parts All of these guys think they re nice guys. What is a nice guy? All of them think that they re “nice.” I said to Adam, when we were doing all that stuff, I said, This is the rom-com. You are the star of a rom-com; this is the beginning of a rom-com. This is the messy night where you guys meet, which becomes the love of your life. It s just that often, people don t notice, in real life and in rom-coms, that the girl isn t really having the conversation in the way that they think she is, you know? So that s also really fun, because really, that first scene, or the second scene, rather, in Jerry s [Brody] apartment, it s the beginning of a romantic comedy; it s just that she s not talking. Which most romantic comedies are [like], actually.(Photo by © Focus Features)The other thing that makes the movie so much fun is the style – the colors and framing and all that great stuff. The thing that really stuck out, though – and it’s the noughties teen in me – was this use of pop music: “Stars Are Blind,” “Toxic,” “2 Become 1.” Bo Burnham and Carey spoke to us about the music at Sundance, and they were talking about how the film reclaims a lot of these songs as quality, not just pop dross to be dismissed. What was your thinking behind the musical selections?Fennell: [I chose them] because I love them, I suppose, is kind of a weird answer. But I think that pop music, often female-led pop music, is a bit like nail polish and a bit like wearing pink: it s kind of an indication that you re not a serious person. And that s useful: If the whole movie is kind of about appearances being deceiving, then making it feel as fun and innocuous as possible was good. But also, they re really powerful, these songs, because we re bringing so much to them. The “Toxic” version that s in this movie, it s a mixture of all the different parts of “Toxic” and it s slowed right, right down, so we slowed down the orchestra. But what s so thrilling about it is that everyone instantly recognizes it, even though we ve really abused it and stretched it and kind of changed it. Then the audience is bringing in so much of their own stuff, because they know the lyrics, they know what they mean. It’s about using those personal relationships with the music in a positive way, and also looking at lyrics.“It s Raining Men” [also featured in the film] is a good example of a lyric that is quite sinister when you put it in this context. And the first lines of the movie, even before f k her, are sung, and they re Charli XCX, and they re I was busy thinking about boys. And I think that s what Cassie s been doing, that s what I ve been doing. Finally, speaking of lyrics, my favorite musical moment, or the one that sort of made me go, wow, is your use of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Something Wonderful.” Which is markedly different from most of the other songs. Fennell: Yeah. What was your thinking behind including that particular standard, which – when you look at the words – is so potent?Fennell: Again, I just think it s such a moving song. It s one of the most romantic songs ever written, I think, and Rodgers and Hammerstein are just geniuses at that kind of deeply felt romance. But it s also all about an incredibly cruel man who occasionally does something wonderful. When the song is playing over the thing we re seeing, it s a song that excuses behavior. That s always going to be the perfect thing that you re looking for, and that s what we re looking for all the way through this movie, which is stuff that was sort of both on the surface immensely pleasurable, but then underneath, also kind of troubling. And funny, darkly funny.Promising Young Woman is in theaters December 25, 2020.Thumbnail images by Rich Polk/Getty Images, ©Focus FeaturesOn an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

The networks continued their big Television Critics Association (TCA) presentations this week, with Showtime making the biggest splash thanks to new details on its Dexter reboot, New Blood, and some frank admissions about how the original series ended. Not to be outdone, ABC made news with an historic first for Dancing with the Stars. Plus there are tons of new trailers – including a look at the second season of Apple TV+ s The Morning Sow – and big casting news, including LaKeith Stanfield s return to scary stories as the lead of the adaptation of hit thriller novel, The Changeling. Check out all the week s biggest stories below.TOP STORYUpcoming Dexter Limited Series: Showtime President Says ‘I Think This Is Going to Be Brilliant’(Photo by © Showtime)One of the best things about Showtime’s upcoming Dexter: New Blood limited series is that it finally gives all us Dexter devoted a chance to see a proper ending for the serial killer of serial killers. And it turns out viewers weren’t the only ones dissatisfied with the 2013 original series finale, which saw Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) faking his death … and going off to work for a lumber company in the northwest.“You know what? Dexter is a jewel in the crown of Showtime, and we didn t do it justice in the end, I think,” Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levin said during the network’s Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation on Tuesday. “And that has always been a burr under my saddle.”Hall also said viewers’ unhappiness with the original series was a big reason why he finally said yes to revisiting the role that earned him five Emmy nominations.“I think a lot of what was mystifying or dissatisfying to people is a lot of what creates the appetite that we re hopefully satisfying now,” Hall said during the New Blood TCA session. “The show did not end in a way that was definitive for people or gave anybody a sense of closure. We didn t hear from Dexter. He didn t say anything to us when the show ended, and I think it left audiences, if nothing else, (in) a sense of suspended animation. Yeah, I think a big part of our motivation was to definitively answer the question of what happened to this guy.”Levine said he thinks they nailed it this time. “We always wanted to see if there was a way to do it right,” he said. “I have to say, we finally got to a place that I am just – I can t wait to show it to you and the world.  I think this is going to be (brilliant).”And we can confirm the limited series – or “special event series,” as the network is officially calling it – gets off to a good start. Picking up about a decade after Dexter went off to live his lumberjack life, in New Blood he’s now residing in a small town in upstate New York, going by the name Jim, and ingratiating himself with the townsfolk while he successfully resists the urges of his Dark Passenger. For a while, anyway … and that’s all we’ll say about that. The 10-episode event series was filmed in Massachusetts during the pandemic, with original series showrunner Clyde Phillips (who left the series before it ended) back on board, and is intended as a one-off. But would a great ratings performance for the show mean Dexter could become a regular visitor to the Showtime lineup?“You re way ahead of me,” Levine said. “I m trying to finish producing the special event series. Expectation is so high for it. And, again, the series is so special to our network and to me, that that s my focus right now. Let s make it great. The future will take care of itself.”Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime Nov. 7.More from Showtime: Your Honor Gets Surprise Second Season as the Ray Donovan Movie Lands a Date(ish)(Photo by Skip Bolen/Showtime) Though the finale of the Bryan Cranston thriller Your Honor was quite definitive, Showtime announced the limited series will return for a second season, after Cranston became intrigued with a storyline idea from writer and showrunner Peter Moffat. Levine said he is still “completely in the dark” about that idea, but Season 2 is a go anyway. The Ray Donovan movie that will wrap up that series after its abrupt cancelation with multiple storylines left dangling, is tentatively planned for a 2022 winter premiere. Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight return as Ray and Mickey, with most of the rest of the cast also return, according to Levine. The last five episodes of Billions Season 5 premiere Sept. 5, and Levine said despite their pandemic delay, they “come back just shot out of a cannon, and you are immediately thrown back into the story.” Season 6 is scheduled to premiere in January. Desus Mero was renewed for a fourth season. Levine said Showtime swapped a long-in-development Halo series for The Man Who Fell to Earth with Paramount+ because Halo was always “an odd fit” with Showtime’s drama-heavy lineup. The Wood writer and director Rick Famuyiwa is teaming up with The Chi and Snowfall writer Justin Hillian to adapt the 1999 comedy movie as a potential Showtime series. At ABC, The Connors Are Set to Go Live, Kevin Hart Swims with Sharks, and A First for Dancing with the Stars(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic) During its TCA panel, ABC revealed the first two contestants for Season 30 of Dancing with the Stars: Olympic gold medalist gymnast Suni Lee, and, in what will be the competition’s first-ever same-sex pairing, pop star JoJo Siwa, who will compete with one of the female pro dancers. The rest of the cast will be revealed on Sept. 8, and the season premieres live on Sept. 20. The Connors’ cast is doing live Season 4 premieres for the East Coast and West Coast on Sept. 22. Kevin Hart will be a new guest shark on Season 13 of Shark Tank, which premieres Oct. 8. John Carroll Lynch’s character didn’t make it out of Big Sky’s first season alive, but Lynch has been confirmed as a returning presence for Season 2. His character, it’s important to note, did have a twin … The Goldbergs Season 9 premiere will give George Segal a proper send-off, with a storyline that includes the death of his character. Steve Harvey will star in a primetime court show called Judge Steve Harvey.NEW TRAILERS: The Morning Show Season 2 Trailer Reveals a Surprise New Cast MemberThe Morning Show, Season 2, finds even more drama surrounding the UBA network’s morning show, as Jennifer Aniston’s Alex and Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley appear to no longer be co-hosts! o the MCU. And as Feige put it at the 2019 D23 Expo, “You will meet her in her Disney+ series and see her in our films,” a commitment to what Ms. Marvel fans have wanted for ages. At the same time Bisha K. Ali was revealed as the series showrunner. In September of 2020, Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, documentary short Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon emerged as the list of directors for the program. Shortly there after, Iman Vellani won the starring role of Kamala Khan. In February of 2021, Laurel Marsden reportedly joined the cast, which includes Vellani, Rish Shah, Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff, Yasmeen Fletcher, Saagar Shaikh, and Matt Lintz. Production wrapped in early May. Despite Feige claiming the series would stream in late 2021, it is unclear if the program will debut immediately after Hawkeye in late December or start just after the New Year. How It Fits in the MCU: The series will reportedly feature some Inhumans besides Kamala, suggesting Marvel Studios will attempt to revive the concept after Marvel Television’s Inhumans seemingly poisoned the well. Also, Feige’s promise that Kamala will appear in films following her debut leaves us wondering if there will be some sort of Young Avengers type film by 2025. In the meantime, Vellani will appear in The Marvels alongside WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris.Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marvel Studios)Release Date: March 25, 2022What We Know: Director Scott Derrickson finally signed on to return in December of 2018, but his involvement with the film ended in early January of 2019 when he departed the production, citing “creative differences.” His replacement is Spider-Man and The Evil Dead’s Sam Raimi, making a return of sorts to the Marvel universe. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as the Sorcerer Supreme with Elizabeth Olsen joining him as the Scarlet Witch in what Derrickson originally called the first scary MCU movie  though some believe Marvel’s unease with that mission statement led to his departure. Raimi’s bonafides as a horror director suggest the film may still have some scares, but the script is being reworked by Loki head writer Michael Waldron and may yet conform to the Marvel house style. As teased at the end of the first film, Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) will return, as will Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong. The film, which is still a ways from beginning production, is now set for release in March 2022 following multiple changes to Marvel Studios schedule. At the December 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation, Feige confirmed Xochitl Gomez will play Young Avengers favorite America Chavez. Production wrapped in mid-April. In May, writer Michael Waldron told Vanity Fair he wrote the script “from scratch” following Derrickson’s departure. In June, he added that film will lean into a “scarier direction,” even though he also mentioned it is not a horror film. How It Fits in the MCU: The addition of America Chavez all but confirms reality-hopping will matter greatly in the coming years – that ability is a key part of her skill set. The events of Loki and WandaVision (to say nothing of what’s teased in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer) also suggest Strange will discover the real enemy lurking in the Multiverse as he deals with both Wanda’s actions and his own. Those who saw the fourth episode of What If…? may even wonder if that enemy is Doctor Strange.Thor: Love And Thunder(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marvel Studios)Release Date: May 6, 2022What We Know: Shortly before Comic-Con 2019, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi signed on to return for a fourth installment in the God of Thunder franchise. Chris Hemsworth will return as the wandering Odinson but not necessarily as Thor. In a surprise move, Marvel revealed Natalie Portman is returning to the series as the new Mighty Thor, a twist pulled from an excellent Thor comic book series by Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and others. Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie, the king of New Asgard who must find a Queen, and we assume Loki (Tom Hiddleston) – in either of his manifestations – will return to mercilessly tease his now nameless brother. As 2020 began, Christian Bale emerged as a potential new member of the cast – Marvel subsequently confirmed he will play the main antagonist, Gorr the God Butcher. In February that year, Someone Great filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson reportedly joined Waititi as a co-writer. That March, Vin Diesel revealed the Guardians of the Galaxy will make some sort of appearance – which we’ve always assumed would be the case – but the addition of Chris Pratt to the cast, announced in November of 2020, confirmed the Guardians will be along for the ride. Production began in early 2021 with all manner of Guardians characters reportedly spotted on set and Jaimie Alexander said to be returning as Lady Sif, who must have been away from Asgard during the events of Ragnarok. In April of 2021, Russell Crowe seemingly confirmed he is playing Olympian god Zeus during a radio call-in show. In June of 2021, Chris Hemsworth took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and Taika Waititi, in costume and on set, to announce that filming had officially wrapped on Love and Thunder. How It Fits in the MCU: Now that we know where Loki is in his own series, it remains to be seen if he’ll even be able to take part in the film. Nevertheless, it is possible the Multiverse will make its presence known even if the former God of Mischief is missing for the first time in the Thor film series. Also, as the film will predate Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, you can expect Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to offer a tearful goodbye as Odinson leaves the group to deal with his loss of name and status.PHASE 5 AND BEYONDDuring the 2019 Comic-Con presentation, Kevin Feige made a few strategic teases about Phase 5, which was set to begin after the release of Love and Thunder. MCU Phases are not set in stone, though – and can even be changed after the fact – so a 2021 teaser of upcoming Marvel Studios films appeared to move the change of phase to 2023. For the moment, though, we’re going to keep the following projects as Phase 5 until Feige appears on stage with an updated calendar. Also, not everything is officially on the release schedule, but we have our guesses as to when some of the features will be released – check them out below.She-Hulk (series)(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Premiere Date: 2022What We Think Might Happen: According to Feige, “Bruce Banner is no longer the only Hulk in the MCU.” Based on fan favorite She-Hulk, the Disney+ series will focus on Bruce’s cousin Jennifer Walters. As the Marvel chief put it, “She’s a Hulk and she’s a lawyer.” Fans of a 2014 run by Charles Soule and Javier Pulido hope some of its irreverent tone and legal action will filter its way into the series. Though She-Hulk was the last series announced at the 2019 D23 Expo, it also became one of the quickest to come together with head writer Jessica Gao – a Rick Morty veteran whose appointment suggests the series will be more comedic – director Cat Coiro, and star Tatiana Maslany, who joined the series in September of 2020, signing on. At the December 2020 Disney Investor Day Presentation, Feige confirmed Maslany as the star, and announced Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth will appear as The Hulk and The Abomination, respectively. Also, when referencing Jen’s day job, Feige said, “you never know what Marvel characters are going to up” in the courtroom, leaving many to speculate what it means for Marvel’s other well-known superhero lawyer. A.P. Bio veteran Anu Valia will also direct episodes. In January of 2021, Ginger Gonzaga reportedly joined the cast as Jennifer’s unnamed best friend. Considering that role is typically filled by Marvel Comics character Patsy Walker – a.k.a. Hellcat – it is possible She-Hulk will offer the first concrete change from the old Marvel Television programs. On Jessica Jones, Patsy was better known as Trish and played by Rachael Taylor. In April, Renée Elise Goldsberry joined the program as a character reportedly called “Amelia.  “In June, Jameela Jamil reportedly joined the series as Titania, a super-strong woman who has tussled with Jennifer in the comics from time to time. How It Fits in the MCU: Besides Jennifer’s familial relationship to Bruce, she’s been known to take on well-known Marvel characters as clients and even tussle with Daredevil in court. In fact, depending on the timing of the She-Hulk TV series, Matt Murdoch could make his return to the MCU within the series. Also, we imagine the series will address why Bruce isn’t hulked out in the Shang-Chi mid-credit stinger.Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Ghcxuf After a year off the air, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC for its sixth season on Friday, May 10 with a refreshed premise, a seeming departure from its big screen Marvel Cinematic Universe cousin, and a new director at the center of television’s Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Luckily, Rotten Tomatoes had the chance to visit S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ and debrief the cast ahead of the new season s premiere. As first revealed at the end of season 5, Alfonso Mackenzie — better known as “Mack” — succeeded the dying Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as the head of the agency after Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) turned down the position. Season 6 picks up sometime after Coulson’s apparent death, with Mack now firmly entrenched as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director. It is a leadership role actor Henry Simmons, who plays Mack, said he loves. In previous seasons, Mack was most frequently seen offering a bewildered punchline about the group s latest adversary or impossible scenario. But now he s front and center.“Now, you have to drive the scenes as a director. I was talking with Clark about this, Simmons said. The weird thing is when you become director you feel responsible for each person, for what s happening in the scene. It s weird. And I enjoy that. I am grateful for the fact that they put it in my hands.”(Photo by ABC/Mitch Haaseth)As the actor recalled, Mack started as a mechanic who wound up in S.H.I.E.L.D. prior to the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He first became part of Coulson’s team when another faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted to test their loyalty following the revelation that Hydra had infiltrated the organization. But after years of dealing with demons and traveling though time, Mack grew to respect Coulson and his team. And as seen in some of the previews for the new season, Mack still refers back to a hologram of Coulson contained within Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) toolbox from earlier seasons.“This is a daily thing,” Simmons explained. “Mack really relies on this hologram for advice, for direction … there s a lot to deal with. We have a member that s out there somewhere, a team member that we have to find. And we have an occurrence that s happening around Earth that is unpredictable and deadly.”Both objectives will hopefully allow Mack to prove to himself he was the right choice to succeed Coulson, a theme executive producer Jeff Bell said will recur through the season. In the same way that Coulson questioned his ability after Fury — Can I be a director? Do I have what it takes?  — I think Mack is going through his own version of that, he said.Meanwhile, the missing team member Simmons mentioned is Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), who also died at the end of season 5. But thanks to the malleable nature of time travel on the series, an earlier version of Fitz is still alive somewhere in deep space and it’s up to a team comprised of Daisy, Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), Agent Piper (Briana Venskus), and Agent Davis (Maximilian Osinski) to find him.(Photo by ABC/Mitch Haaseth)For Daisy, the mission is particularly fraught considering the future version of Fitz tried to kill her to prevent the world from ending. (Things got a little crazy last season.) But this Fitz never hurt her.“I think the one thing that connects all of them is that they re all trying to be the best versions of themselves, but still at the end of the day, there s darkness within every character, Bennet said. That darkness may be most apparent in Jemma Simmons, whose dedication to finding Fitz tests the patience of the others as the season begins.“Ethically she s just so biased on finding him. So she is not worried about other people s feelings. She doesn t care what the consequences are,” Henstridge said of her character’s state of mind. She noted the character has become single-minded before, but never to this extent — threatening the lives of the others. “She s can t fit anything else in her head at the moment, because as soon as she starts to think about other people, she ll start to think about the crazy odds of what she s trying to do and she ll break down.”For Piper and Davis, the mission means a certain sacrifice, but for Venskus and Osinski, it means a promotion. After appearing on the series off-and-on for the past four years, both will feature regularly for the first time this season. It means an expansion of the characters and a new role for them to share.“We are kind of like the everyman of the show,” Osinski explained, adding, “We don t have superpowers; we don t have robotic arms or special weapons. Said Venskus, “We re the ones who are more surprised by things still — which is kind of cool. We provide that comedic relief of being, like, ‘This isn t normal, right?’”They are, however, highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who managed to survive just about every upheaval since S.H.I.E.L.D. s initial fall in The Winter Soldier. As Venskus put it, that means Piper went to from learning about aliens in her first episode to treating space travel like “no big deal” in season 6. And if previous seasons are any indication, the duo s deep space adventure will continue for quite awhile.(Photo by ABC/Matthias Clamer)Back on Earth, Mack and the rest of the team face those anomalies Simmons mentioned. They crisscross the planet in something resembling a pattern. And as previews have hinted at, it may have something to do with Gregg’s new character, Sarge; a sort of “anti-Coulson” who is as much of a mystery as the anomalies.“They have a similar drive and focus,” Gregg said of Coulson and Sarge. “They re both, I think, not someone whose willpower you want to question. But everything else, the moral framework, all that stuff, is different.”According to executive producer Jed Whedon, Sarge’s frame of mind will be “so shocking to people” that it “actually has its own power.” At the same time, watching Sarge make the choices he does while looking and sounding like Coulson “gives those moments more weight than they normally would have.”“It was very, very hard to get my balance,” Gregg said of switching gears into Sarge. “It really felt odd. There s a part of [his thinking] that s so clean. He has a mission and he does [it] life means nothing to him. He wants what he wants. And he s going to get it done. And that s very freeing, and it s kind of sexy, it feels like it s fun. And yet I had a lot of questions about how he s justifying that.”One character also having a hard time justifying Sarge’s presence is Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). She stayed with Coulson during his last days and returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. a “freer” person. As Wen put it, “She doesn t have the burden of dealing with either him being sick or die or come back after he died and die again.”(Photo by ABC/Matthias Clamer)Of course, that sense of freedom gets “skewered” when she first sees Sarge.“It s a moment of disbelief and major angst for her,” Wen explained. But once May understands the real story behind Sarge, the character will have a familiar Melinda May reaction. “She s pissed,” Wen added. “She s really pissed.”Beyond her reaction to Coulson, May brings her experience and honesty back to S.H.I.E.L.D. This includes an advisory role to Mack and Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova- Buckley). The latter continues to serve as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and, but Cordova-Buckley noted that her character has undergone a shift from the rebellious Yo-Yo we first met.“It was really interesting for me to go from a girl that s so [about] her word, her mind, her beliefs, and always really going against anything that goes against that,  Cordova-Buckley said, to now saying, You know what, there s a bigger picture. I need to be more diplomatic. I need to settle the fire down and find my way within the institution, the bureaucracy, and all that stuff. ”That said, Cordova-Buckley said Yo-Yo may still decline a leadership position within S.H.I.E.L.D., although she would become a great leader if circumstances forced the role upon her.“I get a sense that she would rather be a mentor of sorts to young children, to Inhumans coming up, to sort of be the leader underground, she said. Not the face of [a group]. (Photo by ABC/Matthias Clamer)Circumstances always change quickly for S.H.I.E.L.D., both within its world and without. Last season, events appeared to coincide with Thanos s (Josh Brolin) arrival on Earth to collect the Time and Mind Stones. But as the series was unclear when it would coming back — or even if it would come back — they could not plan a proper connection with the events of Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. That means the slightest bit of retconning will be on display in the season to come.“However the Time Lords want to work it out, all of this had to happen before the Snap,” executive producer Jeph Loeb explained. “Otherwise, we d be living in the world that was brilliantly showed in Endgame.”Then again, perhaps Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will employ the notion of tangent timelines to explain itself in some yet-to-be-written episode. The show always excels at finding the odd corners of the MCU to examine and that would be a fine one to use. In the meantime, though, S.H.I.E.L.D. has plenty of personal crises and intergalactic stakes to keep themselves busy ahead of the already planned season 7.Like this? Summer Movie Calendar 2021 A month-by-month breakdown of the best summer movies 2021 has to offer, from A Quiet Place Part II and F9 to Luca and The Suicide Squad. (Photo by @ Twentieth Century Fox)With the 91st Academy Awards around the corner, we ve been wondering whether first-time nominees or veterans who’ve already won an Oscar – or been nominated – have a better chance of winning. With only four of the 20 nominated actors walking away with an Oscar on Sunday, we wanted to know how the five former winners, six prior nominees, and nine first-time nominees who make up the group of 20 will fair – according to Oscar trends. And so we dove into the data to see if there were any patterns suggesting that vets are favored over newcomers, and vice versa, and applied that to this year s nominees. To keep the data current, we decided to focus on recent nominees and winners, beginning with the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001. What we found could be crucial info when filling out your Oscar ballot.(We did go a little further, analyzing the four Academy Award acting categories going back to 1929 and discovered that 1,700 nominations have gone out to only 928 actors. Further, 364 Academy Awards have been won by just 298 actors. Multiple awards have been won by 41 actors, and 257 have only won once. That seems to tell us that, historically, the awards favor first-time winners and it’s more difficult to be a repeat winner with so much competition.)Here are some key takeaways about the 72 Acting Oscars awarded and the 360 nominations since the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.36 Oscars have been won by actors who’d already won an Oscar or been nominated36 Oscars have been won by first-time nominees218 nominations have been given to prior winners or nominees142 nominations have been given to first-time nominees4 Actors have won multiple Oscars between 2001-2018: Cate Blanchett (2005, 2014), Sean Penn (2004, 2009), Daniel Day-Lewis (2008, 2013), Christoph Waltz (2010, 2013)5 Actors who won Oscars prior to 2001, won their second or third Oscars since 2001: Meryl Streep (1980, 1983, 2012), Denzel Washington (1990, 2002), Hilary Swank (2000, 2005), Frances McDormand (1997, 2018), Daniel Day-Lewis (1990, 2008, 2013)68 Actors have won OscarsSo what does this data tell us about who might win this year?Best Actress: Veteran Nominees – if not winners – Dominate(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Nominees since 2001: 26 prior Oscars winners, 30 prior nominees (with no wins), and 34 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 4 Oscar winners, 8 prior nominees, and 6 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 2 prior nominees (with no wins), and 3 first-time nominees.Glenn Close: The Wife – 6 prior nominations for The World According to Garp (1982), The Big Chill (1983), The Natural (1984), Fatal Attraction (1984), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Albert Nobbs (2011)Melissa McCarthy: Can You Ever Forgive Me? – 1 prior nomination for Bridesmaids (2011)Lady Gaga: A Star is Born – No prior nominationsYalitza Aparicio: Roma – No prior nominationsOlivia Colman: The Favourite – No prior nominationsBased on recent trends, the advantage in this category goes to seven-time nominee Glenn Close (The Wife) and the twice-nominated Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). Why? Seven of the last eight winning actresses had been nominated at least twice before winning, and prior nominees in the Best Actress category have the best chance to win (8 winners out of 30 nominations, or  26.6%) among the four acting categories. Also, no Oscar-winning actresses were nominated in 2019; in years when no Oscar winners were nominated (2003, 2008), the Oscar has gone to actresses with prior nominations.Another factor is that since 1927, only Shirley Booth (Come Back, Little Sheba), Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl), and Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God) have won a Best Actress Oscar for their first starring roles. This hurts the odds of Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) and Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) winning because of their newcomer status.Who has the advantage? We’re guessing the seven-time nominated Glenn Close will follow in the footsteps of Julia Roberts, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, and Julianne Moore who had at least three nominations and zero wins when they picked up their Oscars.Best Actor: The Odds Are Split, But It Helps to Play a Real-Life Character(Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Nominees since 2001: 24 prior Oscars winners, 34 prior nominees (with no wins), and 32 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 3 Oscar winners, 8 prior nominees, and 7 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 1 Oscar Winner, 3 prior nominees (with no wins), and 1 first-time nominee.Christian Bale: Vice – 1 Oscar win for The Fighter (2011) and two nominations for American Hustle (2014), and The Big Short (2016)Bradley Cooper: A Star is Born – 3 prior nominations for Silver Linings Playbook (2013), American Hustle (2014), and American Sniper (2015)Willem Dafoe: At Eternity’s Gate – 3 prior nominations for Platoon (1987), Shadow of the Vampire (2001), and The Florida Project (2018)Viggo Mortensen: Green Book – 2 prior nominations for Eastern

Of course, the Client’s real aims are yet to be discovered, but from the nature of the asset, we can speculate. Either this branch of the Imperial Remnant is after control of the Force or they seek to use the asset’s natural longevity to keep their sense of order alive across centuries. Sadly, Herzog, nor any other member of the cast, could speak to the implications of The Mandalorian’s assignment.Nonetheless, Herzog said the story introduces a “new mythology” to fans and people, like him, who are coming fresh to the Star Wars galaxy. “Not very often in the cultural history we have had new mythologies. We have had it in ancient Greek mythology, we had it in antiquity, and very rarely are [there] moments where new mythologies are evolving. And I find it very significant. And it is also full of fantasy, full of fever dreams, full of new characters that you haven t expected. So it s a wonderful possibility for filmmaking.”Was That Jodo Kast?(Photo by Twentieth Century Fox)Moments after the first episode went live on Disney+, eagle-eyed viewers spotted several Mandalorians in Beskar Steel armor lurking in the shadows of the encampment the Mandalorian visits to drop off his cut of recent bounties and the first ingot of Beskar Steel he accepted from the Imperial client. One warrior in particular, seemed to closely resemble Star Wars’s previous iconic Mandalorian, Boba Fett. The mix of green and yellow on his armor seemed striking familiar. But as we always hope to see Expanded Universe character Jodo Kast — a bounty hunter who pretended to be Boba Fett in the years immediately following Return of the Jedi — make his way onto the show, we’re inclined to believe he may be the Mando in question. Then again, would a group of Mandalorians desperate to rebuild their culture tolerate a phony in their midst? The possibility of Kast appearing may seem slight, but back on both Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, Filoni found ways to bring discarded EU characters like Admiral Thrawn and planets like Malachor back into the story or, at least, the galaxy’s history. And Favreau’s gleeful inclusions of
