The cable network will pay seven figures and Bennett will be an executive producer on the show. The book tells the story of twin sisters who grow up in a small Black community in the South, and run away together at age 16. A decade later, one twin has returned to her hometown, and the other lives with her husband, who thinks she is white. On the heels of the March Season 10 finale, HBO announced this week that David will return for Season 11. “Believe me, I’m as upset about this as you are,” David joked. “One day I can only hope that HBO will come to their senses and grant me the cancellation I so richly deserve.”Since Mike Henry has quit the role of voicing Cleveland on The Cleveland Show, Wendell Pierce has a great idea for taking over the role: himself. 2. THIS WEEK IN REPLACING DICAPRIO, PART 2: SAM ROCKWELL AND RICHARD JEWELL(Photo by Fox Searchlight)DiCaprio had also previously been attached to star in Clint Eastwood s next film as director, Richard Jewell (previously titled The Ballad of Richard Jewell), but his role has now gone to Sam Rockwell instead. The title refers to a security guard who discovered a suspicious backpack bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Rockwell will play Jewell s defense attorney, and the title role is going to Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya. (At one point, that role would have gone to Jonah Hill, when he was physically much heavier.) The cast for the film expanded even further this week, though, as Kathy Bates will also be co-starring as Jewell s mother. In related news, Paul Walter Hauser also signed on this week for a lower profile film, Silk Road, which is also based on a true crime story.3. NETFLIX ADAPTING HIT VIDEO GAME THE DIVISION WITH JESSICA CHASTAIN AND JAKE GYLLENHAAL(Photo by JA, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are so many Marvel movies (over 30 if you include the various Sony and Fox movies) that it s rare to find a big star who hasn t appeared in at least one of them. Jessica Chastain co-starred as an alien in last week s Dark Phoenix, and Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, and we now know that they will both headline an upcoming video game movie. Both of them actually joined the movie based on Tom Clancy s The Division three years ago, but that was so long ago that, until this week, it didn t seem like a sure thing that either was still attached. The big reveal this week is that Netflix has stepped in to produce and distribute The Division, which will be the next film directed by David Leitch, who s coming off Certified Fresh action hits in Atomic Blonde (78%) and Deadpool 2 (83%). Tom Clancy s The Division is an action role-playing game set in New York City following a mass genocide from a viral attack.4. NETFLIX ENLISTS COCO WRITER FOR THEIR TAKE ON CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)Ostensibly inspired by the box office successes of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, Walden Media started adapting C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia in 2005 with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. That first movie was a box office smash (5 million globally), but the second (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) and third (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) both dropped by nearly half with 9 million and 5 million, respectively. (The third film also dipped the franchise into Rotten territory.) Disney released the first two films, and Fox the third, but nine years later, Netflix now has the rights. To get things started, Netflix has hired screenwriter Matthew Aldrich (who cowrote Pixar s Coco, Certified Fresh at 97%) to work on their ambitious adaptations of Lewis seven novels into both movies and at least one series.5. MELISSA MCCARTHY S ST. VINCENT REUNION THE STARLING (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Like many comic actors, Melissa McCarthy frequently dips her cinematic toes into more dramatic fare (like last year s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Certified Fresh at 98%). McCarthy arguably started doing this in 2014 with the dramedy St. Vincent (Certified Fresh 77%), co-starring Bill Murray, Naomi Watts, and Chris O Dowd. St. Vincent was directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures), who had planned to direct a psychiatric dramedy called Fruit Loops (with Woody Harrelson) next, until Disney recently let it go as part of their new Fox plans. Quickly shifting gears, Melfi will instead next direct a tragic comedy called The Starling, with McCarthy and O Dowd reuniting from St. Vincent as a married couple struggling with grief.6. BO BURNHAM WILL WRITE THE NEW SESAME STREET MOVIE S SONGS  (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although January is historically seen as a dump month, studios have more recently been enjoying success with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in mid-January (Glass in 2019, Hidden Figures in 2017, Ride Along 2 in 2016, etc.). Warner Bros. is developing a Sesame Street musical starring Anne Hathaway, and they chose a release date of January 15, 2021 (which would have been MLK s 92nd birthday) a while back. Filming isn t expected to start until April of next year, and this week, we found out who will be writing the new Sesame Street songs. That role has gone to comedian-turned-writer-director Bo Burnham, who is coming off a great 2018 after his award-winning feature directorial debut with teen drama Eighth Grade (Certified Fresh at 99%). As pointed out in this piece, Burnham made an early mark on YouTube by performing raunchy songs like My Whole Family Thinks I m Gay, but it s pretty obvious that his Sesame Street songs won t be like that. Or so we assume.7. CLASSIC HORROR FILM BLACK CHRISTMAS GETTING REMADE (AGAIN)(Photo by MGM courtesy Everett Collection)Possibly more than any other genre, horror movies are particularly ripe for remakes, mostly because they can be made relatively affordably with a high potential box office return. In 2006, one such remake was Black Christmas (Rotten at 15%), based on the influential early 1974 slasher of the same title (Fresh at 71%). Both films featured young actresses as sorority house members who later became more famous: Margot Kidder (Superman) in the original film, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV s Fargo) in the remake. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures are rushing to remake Black Christmas again, and the lead actress this time around will be Imogen Poots, who co-starred in 2016 s Green Room. We say rushing because Universal has scheduled Black Christmas for just six months from now (December 13, 2019), up against the Jumanji sequel. The updated film will be directed by Sophia Takal, who co-wrote the script with April Wolfe, which gives the remake a unique female perspective that might be exactly the jolt it needs.Rotten Ideas2. KEVIN HART REMAKING BILL MURRAY S SCROOGED (Photo by Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures)Bill Murray s zombie comedy The Dead Don t Die is in theaters this weekend, and he s all over The Weekly Ketchup as well. This is the third story with Murray connections, following Ghostbusters 3 and The Starling (which is a reunion project for St. Vincent, in which Bill Murray starred). Although they don t always hit financially, remakes remain popular with Hollywood because many of them can be made relatively affordably (compared to say, superhero movies), but still have name brand familiarity. In 1988, Bill Murray starred in Scrooged (Fresh at 70%), which was itself basically a remake (more specificially a reimagination) of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Well, that remake is going to get a remake, because Kevin Hart is producing and is expected to star in a Scrooged remake for Paramount Pictures. The Scrooged remake does not yet have a screenwriter or director, so it s probably at least a few Christmases away.1. ANIMATED SPICE GIRLS MOVIE IN THE WORKS(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Spice Girls movie, Spice World (Rotten at 35%), which unironically had absolutely nothing to do with Frank Herbert s Dune (melange jokes for the win). As with all mortals, time marches on even for the Spice Girls, but Paramount Pictures has figured out a way to make another Spice Girls movie: animation. All five original Spice Girls members are signed on to star in the new animated film, which will feature both their hit songs and new songs as well. The Spice Girls movie is part of a new Paramount Animation slate that aims to release two movies a year, starting in 2020 with The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020) and the comic book adaptation Rumble (7/31/2020). Paramount is also still developing an animated Mighty Mouse movie. This story isn t the week s Rotten Idea for those films, however, but because of Spice World s Tomatometer score.Like this? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
ilms(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)When it was first announced, Justice League was intended to be a two-part film with Snyder and stars Henry Cavill, Gadot, Affleck, Jason Momoa, Fisher, and Ezra Miller convening to film the bulk of the first film and portions of the second at Leavesden Studios in London. Much like the efforts of Warner Bros. Pictures cross-town superhero competition, the plan was for these two films to serve as a culmination of storylines began in Man of Steel and through Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, and Suicide Squad. Although, once the scripts were developed, Snyder said the two films would tell distinct stories. Then, as filming commenced on Justice League in April of 2016, Batman v Superman was released to the derision of critics (it is at 28% on the Tomatometer) and, seemingly, the industry deciding en mass that the film was a creative disaster. In London, this meant the quiet cancellation of the second Justice League film and a hasty rewrite of the first film’s script to bring its story to a true conclusion. As we now understand it, the first Justice League movie was meant to end with the resurrection of Superman with the second film seeing the League assembling to fight cosmic-level bad guy Darkseid. In the years since it dissolved, Snyder offered fans glimpses of design art and storyboards from the abandoned second film thanks to his social media accounts, and lately has been teasing the first trailer for the Snyder Cut on HBO Max.But even as the film soldiered on in production, it was clear to Snyder and his partners at the studio that a period of reshoots would be required. Most big-budget tentpole releases schedule some additional photography these days, but the high-profile nature of Justice League – and the growing bad buzz around Warners’ attempts to bring the DC Comics heroes to the screen – meant the work was regarded with suspicion. Of course, no one would know just how extensive these reshoots would be until Snyder delivered his first cut.The Snyder Assembly : A First Draft(Photo by Clay Enos/© Warner Bros. Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)As with the myth of the six-hour version of David Lynch’s Dune, the notion of the Snyder Cut begins with an assembly of the film – a compilation of the best takes chosen by editors David Brenner, Richard Pearson, Martin Walsh, and Snyder himself representing the scenes as written in the script. Lacking complete special effects, utilizing a temporary soundtrack, and featuring the background studio noise of the scenes as they were filmed, an assembly is meant more to reveal what to cut from the script once the actors, technicians, and filmmakers fill in the gutters left behind by the screenplay. An actor’s expression may more effectively convey a piece of written dialogue, for example. But an assembly will give a director of a multi-million-dollar film the first inkling of what he may need to reshoot to massage the story into shape. For Dune, Lynch went back and reshot the scene in which Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) drinks the Water of Life to unite ideas and clarify ideas from a number of scenes in the assembly which were ultimately cut from the theatrical release. And while assemblies are not typically released to the public, 20th Century Fox Home Video did release an “assembly cut” of Alien3 in its Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set and the subsequent Alien Anthology Blu-ray set. Roughly 30 minutes longer than the release version, it is a surprisingly finished product which more closely reflects director David Fincher’s vision of the film before the studio took it out of his hands and removed the religious overtones and an entire chase sequence. In fact, we re inclined to believe the original Snyder cut fans were calling for, before production began again in earnest on the project, was more a fine assembly or early director s cut than a true early assemblage of material.February, 2016: The Origin of the Snyder Cut(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Even before Snyder announced his departure from the film in May of 2017, rumors around town indicated footage from London had failed to wow Warner executives. At this point, reshoots were scheduled and Joss Whedon entered the story. At the time, he was reportedly working on a Batgirl film, but was also assisting Snyder and Warner Bros. with writing new Justice League material. Around this time, February of 2016, rumors circulated indicating Snyder had been fired, but both he and the studio quickly shot this down. But then Snyder’s family experienced an unimaginable tragedy when his daughter Autumn took her own life on March 20, 2017. Snyder subsequently said he continued to work on the film for nearly six weeks after her death in the hopes it would mitigate his grief, but it proved to be no comfort at all. He willingly handed the reins off to Whedon for the reshoots and the post-production phase. In that moment, Snyder’s cut was characterized as unfinished – and considering the realities of major Hollywood filmmaking, that is reasonable to believe. Any extensive visual effects would still be in process for months to come. Color grading, sound mixing, and other stages of the final post-production efforts would not occur until the reshoots were completed.Nonetheless, members of the production like storyboard artist Jay Oliva (who also directed many of the DC Universe Animated direct-to-video titles), Momoa, and composer Junkie XL (who was replaced by Danny Elfman for the theatrical version) all claim the film was in a much more finished state than was suggested at the moment Snyder walked away. The Snyder Cut Direct-to-Streaming Is Nothing New(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Turning a director s cut from a file on a hard drive somewhere to a marketable product is a specialty of the home video market – a tradition carried through now to streamer HBO Max and Justice League. A 2006 DVD release of Dune offered fans a widescreen version of the film’s television cut, supervised by the same Universal employees who prepared the infamous “Love Conquers All” version of Brazil. Both cuts of that film emerged on a celebrated Criterion Collection laserdisc set which was later released on DVD and Blu-ray.Like Alien3, Alien and Aliens also came to DVD and Blu-ray with alternate director’s cuts representing versions of the films those directors felt more aligned with their original visions. And it was out of this ethos that Alien director Ridley Scott and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment assembled its fabulous DVD and Blu-ray releases of Blade Runner. Its high-end collector’s edition came complete with five cuts of the film and a 45-minute deleted scene compilation which almost counts as a sixth cut. As with Alien, Scott wanted fans to experience every extant version in addition to his preferred “Final Cut.” It was the sort of philosophy perfect from home video at the time and one we wish more directors would subscribe to.But in all of these cases, the films are in finished states. Has there ever been a case in which a director walked away from a film, saw it completed by someone else, only to find his vision restored many years later? As it happens, yes – and in an odd twist of fate, it is a film featuring Superman. The Donner Cut: The Movie that Set the Precedent(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)In 1979, Richard Donner was fired from the two-part Superman production after butting heads with producers Ilya Salkind and Pierre Spengler throughout an arduous 18-month shoot. According to multiple sources, Donner managed to shoot around 70% of Superman II before it was decided to concentrate on making Superman the best it could be – which included moving Superman II’s intended ending to the first film. The suggestion may have come from A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester, who was on set as a consultant and would go on to finish Superman II after Donner’s departure. As Director’s Guild rules require the credited director shoot over 50% of a finished film, Lester remounted a number of scenes completed by Donner. And like Whedon’s changes to Justice League, Lester infused Superman II with a broader sense of humor. An off-screen voice shouts “I know some judo!” when the citizens of Metropolis threaten the Kryptonian criminals. A minute later, sight gags dominate while Ursa (Sarah Douglas) “blows them a kiss.” But unlike the theatrical release of Justice League, Superman II was considered the more creatively and financially successful of the two original Superman films until a critical reappraisal some years later. In 2001, editor Michal Thau approached Warner Home Video and Donner about reassembling his version of Superman II from extant material. A few years later, footage of Marlon Brando shot for the film but later deleted became available, making the Donner Cut a possibility. Working with Donner, Thau produced The Donner Cut, which accurately depicts the director’s plans for the film – right down to the original ending he later co-opted for Superman. It is a noble effort which cuts down on the broad humor and ups the drama, but also underscores the missed opportunity. Donner never had the chance to find a new ending for Superman II, leaving his “cut” of the film feeling strangely repetitive.

8.40.2 2月喜迎This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Borderlands and Spy Kids, as well as a few reunion projects. This WEEK S TOP STORYKEVIN HART JOINS CATE BLANCHETT IN THE BORDERLANDS VIDEO GAME ADAPTATION(Photo by ©Warner Bros. Pictures)If one wanted to find a common theme for Kevin Hart s movie career, he has twice now proven himself adept at finding a straight man to be his big screen partner, first with Ice Cube (Ride Along, Ride Along 2) and then Dwayne Johnson in the recent Jumanji movies. In a move that pretty much no one saw coming, it now looks like Kevin Hart s next movie partner might be Cate Blanchett. Inasmuch as that pairing might be against type, the whole movie might be playing into that theme, because what we re talking about is the video game adaptation Borderlands. Blanchett is attached to star as Lilith, The Siren, and Kevin Hart s character will be Roland, The Soldier. Roland and Lilith frequently partner together in the various Borderlands narratives, but they also have a few other crew members yet to be cast. Borderlands will be directed by Eli Roth, who is best known for his work in horror like Cabin Fever and Hostel, but he s also branched into other genres like he did with the kids movie The House with a Clock in its Walls (also starring Blanchett). Borderlands, its prequel, and sequels have earned over billion in game sales.Other Top Headlines1. DARREN ARONOFSKY TO SET JARED LETO ADRIFT(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)It doesn t happen that often, but every once in a while, we will hear about a new movie project with a certain title even though there was just another movie with the exact same title not that long ago. Shailene Woodley s survival drama Adrift (Fresh at 69%) just came out three years ago, but yes, we re already getting another Adrift. Jared Leto is now attached to star in a thriller called Adrift which will reunite him with Darren Aronofsky, his director on the addiction thriller Requiem for a Dream ( Certified Fresh at 79%). Adrift is described as being a thriller about a ghost ship based on a short story by Koji Suzuki, who also wrote the inspiration for Ringu (The Ring) (Fresh at 97%). It s important to note, however, that this will not be Aronofsky s next film, as that s already confirmed to be the recently announced overeating drama The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser.2. MICHELLE WILLIAMS TO REUNITE WITH KELLY REICHARDT FOR FOURTH FILM TOGETHER(Photo by Jim Spellman/Getty Images)If there is just one director that is most closely connected to the film career of actress Michelle Williams, it s probably Kelly Reichardt, who has previously cast Williams in Wendy Lucy (Certified Fresh at 85%), Meek s Cutoff (Certified Fresh at 86%), and Certain Women (Certified Fresh at 92%). Williams and Reichardt are now reuniting for an A24 movie called Showing Up, which is a bit of a departure for Reichardt, as it s described as a comedy (Reichardt s movies not super funny.) Williams will reportedly star as an artist on the verge of a career-changing exhibition who has to navigate friends, family and colleagues in the lead-up to her show. Reichardt s most recent film was last year s First Cow (Certified Fresh at 96%), which was a festival darling and has earned a handful of honors so far this awards season.3. TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET JOINS LUCA GUADAGNINO S HORROR ROMANCE BONES ALL(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)We ve known almost since Call Me By Your Name came out that director Luca Guadignino is developing a sequel, but recent news concerning Armie Hammer suggests why that movie might be put on hold for a bit. Instead, Guadagnino and his other Call Me By Your Name star, Timothée Chalamet, are now considering reuniting for a completely different movie project. Chalamet is now in talks to star in Guadagnino s horror romance Bones All, which has been speculated to involve cannibalism.4. PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN STAR CAREY MULLIGAN SCRATCHES FINGERNAILS Ryan FujitaniAlthough COVID-19 has obviously impacted this year s awards season harshly, it is still technically happening, and one of the top contenders this year is the indie thriller Promising Young Woman (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Carey Mulligan. While she waits to see how things pan out for her this season, Mulligan has signed to star in a project called Fingernails, which will be the English language debut of Greek filmmaker Christos Nikou (Apples). Another major actress involved with Fingernails is Cate Blanchett, who is serving as one of the film s producers. Christos Nikou is reportedly still working on the Fingernails screenplay, which will reportedly be about a woman who starts to wonder if her relationship with her longtime partner is real, leading her to work at a mysterious institute designed to incite and test the presence of romantic love in increasingly desperate couples. That premise sounds a bit like The Lobster, which was also directed by a Greek filmmaker, Yorgos Lanthimos.5. DRACULA SPINOFF LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER FINALLY SETS SAIL (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures)One of the odd quirks movie development is that some films take years and years to get produced, and along the way, some just never happen at all. One project that has taken its time is the horror film Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is based on one small part of Bram Stoker s original vampire novel Dracula and which has been in development at least as far back as 2010. In Dracula, the Demeter was the Russian ship that actually transported Dracula and his coffin from Transylvania to England. Last Voyage of the Demeter looks like it s finally happening, though, with Corey Hawkins now set to star for director Andre Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark). Bram Stoker s novel leaves the exact circumstances of what happened on the Demeter a mystery, except that when the boat finally landed in England, it was empty. Last Voyage of the Demeter is being produced by Steven Spielberg s Amblin Partners, but Spielberg himself is not credited as one of its producers.6. THE CROWN STAR CLAIRE FOY GOES FISHING FOR LOVE IN THE PISCES (Photo by Laurie Sparham/©Bleecker Street Media) Surprise wins have become a common theme at recent Academy Awards ceremonies (we re thinking here of Spotlight, Moonlight, and Parasite), but there is an argument to be made that no recent Best Picture winner was quite as unexpected as Guillermo del Toro s merman romance The Shape of Water, especially given its monster movie character design and roots in GDT s love for Creature from the Black Lagoon. Mermaids have a long history of appearing in movies, and Disney itself is currently producing their own live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, but this week, we also learned of a movie that seems more inspired by The Shape of Water. Claire Foy, who may be best known as the first actress to star as Queen Elizabeth II on hit Netflix series The Crown, is now set to star in The Pisces, an adaptation of the Melissa Broder novel about a PhD student who falls in love with a merman. The Pisces will be directed by Gillian Robespierre, who is currently best known for her acclaimed collaborations with Jenny Slate (Obvious Child, Landline), which may offer some insight into the tone of the film.7. ETHAN HAWKE ANSWERS THE BLACK PHONE FOR SCOTT DERRICKSON(Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)Movie stars reuniting with directors was clearly a theme this week. Adding to the list is Ethan Hawke, who has joined the cast of a film called The Black Phone, starring Jeremy Davies (TV s LOST and Justified) and directed by Scott Derrickson (Marvel s Doctor Strange), the latter of whom previously worked with Hawke on his directorial debut, the 2012 horror film Sinister. The Black Phone will also be Hawke s ninth project with producer Jason Blum (of Blumhouse), following movies like The Purge (and, briefly, its TV spinoff) and the upcoming Showtime series The Good Lord Bird. Ethan Hawke will also soon be seen in the Vikings drama The Northman and the Disney+ series Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac.8. READY OR NOT STAR SAMARA WEAVING TO PLAY NAPOLEON S SISTER-IN-LAW LIZ(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One of the all-time greats in the realm of Hollywood what-ifs involves Stanley Kubrick s attempts to direct a biopic of French conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte, with Jack Nicholson long attached to star. We re talking here about what would have been a major 1970s epic, which means that was over 40 years ago, and yet here we are, and Hollywood has yet to return to the famous historical figure. Instead, we re it looks like we re going to get a biopic about a completely different Bonaparte. Liz will be an indie drama about American socialite Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, A.K.A. Napoleon Bonaparte s sister-in-law by way of his younger brother Jerome. Samara Weaving, who is probably best known for her role in the 2019 horror comedy Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%), is now attached to star as the titular character in Liz, which will be directed by Adam Leon, whose previous credits include the indie films Tramps and Gimme the Loot.9. ROBERT RODRIGUEZ WANTS TO REBOOT SPY KIDS(Photo by Gabriel Olsen/Getty Images)Director Robert Rodriguez recently returned to the world of his 2005 movie The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl (Rotten at 19%) for the Netflix sequel We Can Be Heroes (Fresh at 73%). Now that he s done with that particular revisit, he s planning something similar for the Spy Kids franchise, as he has optioned the rights to reimagine Spy Kids, which he will both write and direct. The new Spy Kids project is also a collaboration between Spyglass Media Group (which owns the franchise rights) and Skydance Media, a company that has co-produced recent Tom Cruise movies like Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Rotten at 37%), Mission:

Spend your burgeoning directing career on strange and grotesque genre pictures, then hook up with a major studio to work on Lord of the Rings, with hundreds of millions of dollars in budget. Obviously! It worked for Peter Jackson, whose Dead Alive and Meet the Feebles movies did little to suggest he would one day get the gold trophy for The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. And it worked for Guillermo del Toro, whose success with cult cinema fanatics led him to toil for years on The Hobbit movies. Del Toro didn t win anything for those movies hell, he didn t even end up directing them. But he did get the top prize for The Shape of Water, an unlikely win for the unlikeliest of love stories, which currently puts a lovely bow on a career characterized by dark fantasy, big sci-fi, and creature features, of visions where the lines between dream and nightmare blur.Del Toro got his start in his native Mexico in the early 90s with the mythological Cronos, featuring Ron Perlman in the first of several collaborations. As with many international filmmakers with a hit on their hands, del Toro was wooed to Hollywood to do exactly his thing except, of course, with tons of studio interference, notes, and meddling. The result was the compromised Mimic, whose lackluster reception was enough to get del Toro to go back abroad for his next film. The Spain set-and-shot The Devil s Backbone was another cult hit, again enough for him to get tempted back to the States. What followed was Blade II and Hellboy, which gave the pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe era of comic book movies an unpredictable shot in the arm. The latter film reunited him with Perlman, along with physical artist Doug Jones, who he first worked with on Mimic and would be crucial on his journey towards The Shape of Water.2005 s Pan s Labyrinth was a cross-cultural phenomenon, a grim fantasy and political commentary that s still heavily watched today. Then 2008 s Hellboy II: The Golden Army had the unfortunate luck of being released a week before The Dark Knight. It took del Toro five years to return with the mech brawler Pacific Rim, which was followed by the Gothic ghost love story Crimson Peak. And then we come to The Shape of Water, his tender ode to Creature from the Black Lagoon.Del Toro is currently prepping noir-thriller Nightmare Alley for a December 2021 release. Now, we re ranking all Guillermo del Toro movies by Tomatometer!

Congratulations! You are one of the lucky thousands who managed to get badges, secure hotel arrangements, and find transpiration for Comic-Con International: San Diego 2019. But those successes are really only half of the victory, as you will soon face a massive amount of content in the San Diego Convention Center’s various halls, event rooms, and a few locations off site. And while you already know a few things you’ll want to see – like Marvel Studios return to Hall H on Saturday, July 20th at 5:15pm – the weekend is full of possibilities that may leave you… Well, it may leave you a bit overwhelmed. We totally understand. We look at the event schedule every year and try to balance the fear of missing out with the understanding that a person can only be in one place at any given time. And since we ve already pored over this year’s schedule, let us offer you a few insights into some of the less obvious film and TV presentations, some of the must-see events, and maybe even one or two things directly related to comics at Comic-Con.Wednesday, July 17Batwoman and Pennyworth Premiere Screenings (Ballroom 20, 7pm-10pm): If you managed to nab a badge with preview night, you should definitely consider going to the now-traditional presentation of Warner Bros. Television programming in Ballroom 20. It usually features at least one premiere screening, but this year, it features two: the pilot episodes of Batwoman and Pennyworth. We suspect both shows will be the big surprises of Comic-Con, and this will be your chance to say you saw it first.Thursday, July 18The first full day of Comic-Con features a pretty diverse schedule of programming, as you’ll see from our picks below. But we also imagine you’ll want to spend some time on the show floor looking for free stuff or hitting up the off-site events Amazon, HBO, Fox TV, and others set up around town. It’s definitely the best day for that, but also consider these highlights from the event schedule:Terminator: Dark Fate (Hall H, 11:00am-12:00pm): The first Hall H panel of 2019 reminds us there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. So get ready to enjoy some never-before-seen footage of Paramount Picture’s upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate, starring Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Diego Luna with return appearances by Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is unclear if they will appear on stage, but it seems likely. The Toys That Made Us (Room 6A, 12:30pm-1:30pm): Comic-Con is a lot of things to a lot of people, and toys definitely factor into the equations. If you’ve ever seen the fabulous Netflix documentary series The Toys That Made Us, you know it is a subject with big passions and a huge industry behind it. The series will be returning for a third season later this year, and show creator Brian Volk-Weiss, executive producer Robin Henry, producer Richard Mayerik, editor Nick Ferrell, and production manager Jackie Palombo will be at Comic-Con providing a sneak peek. If you have nostalgia for toys of the 1980s or early 1990s, this might be the panel for you.DC Tom King: While it is unclear how much DC Comics writer Tom King can say about his work on the upcoming New Gods feature film, an hour-long chat with King at any comic convention is a wonderful treat. And who knows, maybe he will spill the beans on New Gods and working with director Ava DuVernay.Nancy Drew Screening (Ballroom 20, 2:00pm-3:15pm): While Comic-Con is the home of superhero-based television shows like The Flash and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., other property-based genre shows are known for launching at the convention as well. That may be the case for Nancy Drew. The upcoming CW series stars Kennedy McMann as a re-imagined version of the famed teen detective, who returns to crime-solving thanks to a literal haunting. The panel will feature a sneak peak at the series – though we suspect it will be the entire first episode – and a discussion with McMann, fellow cast members Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Alex Saxon, and Tunji Kasim, and executive producers Noga Landau, Melinda Hsu-Taylor, and Stephanie Savage.Skybound: In Conversation with Robert Kirkman (3:00pm-4:00pm, Room 6A): The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is a lively presence during just about any Comic-Con panel. But he tends to be even livelier when he is the sole focus of said panel. This one should be no exception, as he fields questions about his decision to end The Walking Dead as a comic book series. He will also offer up some info about the upcoming film and television adaptations of his work, like Invincible and Oblivion Song. Considering Kirkman and his Skybound Entertainment venture into television, comics, games and more, it may be more of a well-rounded comic convention panel than you might expect.MUST SEE OF THE DAY: His Dark Materials (Hall H, 4:45-5:45)HBO will bring cast and footage from its upcoming adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy. Stars Dafen Keen, James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ruth Wilson will be on hand to field questions about the series and its take on Pullman’s sometimes controversial stances. But expect Miranda to win the day with his seemingly-effortless ability to command a crowd. Also, since His Dark Materials is taking Game of Thrones’s place as HBO’s prestige fantasy series, this is the perfect opportunity to learn if you’ll want to be a devoted watcher.Friday, July 19If Thursday felt like a walk in the park, Friday will be more difficult to navigate, with television shows taking the focus. But choices must be made, and we suggest these picks might put you on the right path:A Conversation with the Russo Brothers (Hall H, 11:00am-11:50am): Though directors Joe and Anthony Russo have completed their work with Marvel Studios, the duo leveraged their success with films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Infinity War into a number of projects as producers. At this panel, they intended to discuss a little bit more about AGBO, their new production company. At the same time, expect them to answer questions about Avengers: Endgame and a possible return to the Marvel Studios fold.Joe Hill and Gabe Rodriguez: Locke Key Spectacular (Room 32AB, 12:00pm-1:00pm): Although meant as a celebration of the Locke Key comic books by Hill and Rodriguez, the hour promises to feature a look at the upcoming Netflix series and a possible new Locke Key comic.Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Hall H, 3:30pm-5:15pm): Get a first look at the upcoming series based Jim Henson’s 1982 cult classic. As three Gelflings discover the secret of the Skeksis power, we’re left to wonder if the program is a prequel or a whole new take on the story of The Dark Crystal. Maybe we will get some of our answers during the panel. And if not, there will probably be plenty of new footage to enjoy.Carnival Row (Ballroom 20, 4:45pm-5:45pm): Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming fantasy series sure looks provocative with its Victorian fantasy world and refugee fantasy characters. But will it prove fantasy is here to stay in the battle between premium content streaming services? If not, at least fans of Orlando Bloom will get a chance to swoon when he appears on stage alongside co-star Cara Delevingne, David Gyasi, Tamzin Merchant, Travis Beacham, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim.Q A With Nathan Fillion and Alexi Hawley (Horton Grand Theater, 6:00pm-7:00pm): The Gaslamp District’s movie theater will play host to this discussion between Firefly and Castle star Nathan Fillion and his friend/collaborator Alexi Hawley. We know from experience that Fillion is a great interview and fans should probably line up early for this as it is an off-site event. What We Left Behind: Star Trek: DS9 (Room 32AB, 7:00pm-8:00pm): Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showrunner Ira Steven Behr, filmmaker David Zappone, and DS9 cast members Andrew Robinson, Aron Eisenberg, and Penny Johnson Jerald will discuss Zappone’s documentary about the second Star Trek spinoff and its odd place in the franchise’s history. The panel will also feature material not seen in the film’s theatrical releases. This is a must-see for all Niners at Comic-Con.World Premiere of Batman: Hush (Ballroom 20, 7:15pm-9:15pm): DC Universe Animated Movies continue to prove creatively and financially successful, and Batman: Hush will likely continue the tradition. It adapts the tale by Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee in which someone known as Hush has figured out Batman’s identity and uses Bruce Wayne’s greatest weaknesses against the Dark Knight. Is Hush someone from Bruce’s past or an established villain who finally put the pieces together? Voice actors like Jason O’Mara and Jennifer Morrison will also be on hand to discuss the film.(Photo by Netflix)MUST SEE OF THE DAY: The Witcher: A Netflix Original Series (Hall H, 2:15pm-3:15pm): We’ve been pretty excited about Netflix upcoming The Witcher television series since it was announced, and we’re going to assume a trailer will debut sometime during the hour. And though not yet confirmed, we imagine star Henry Cavill will put in an appearance.Saturday, July 20Let’s face it, Saturday is going to be about the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at 5:15pm. If you’re planning to stay in the hall all day to secure your seat, you’ll also get sneak peeks at the next year of Star Trek – which includes the upcoming Star Trek: Picard – and Westworld’s upcoming third season. You will also see the annual Animation Show of Shows and Woman Who Kick Ass panels before the main event. If you still have some energy left afterwards, Kevin Smith will close out Saturday with the debut of the Jay Silent Bob Reboot trailer. Meanwhile, in Ballroom 20, The CW is bringing most of its Superhero shows to San Diego throughout the day. But if that isn’t your taste or the Hall H line makes you quake with fear, consider these alternatives.(Photo by Colleen Hayes/NBC)NBC’s The Good Place (Indigo Ballroom, 12:00pm-12:50pm): Stars Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, D Arcy Carden, and Manny Jacinto – along with executive producers Michael Schur and Drew Goddard – will talk a little bit about the program’s upcoming fourth and final season. Will our heroes finally make it into The Good Place? The Expanse (Indigo Ballroom, 1:00pm-1:50pm): Consider it something of a victory lap. The stars and producers behind The Expanse gather to talk about their remarkable transfer to Amazon Prime Video and what Season 4 has in store for Belters and the like. If you love this series, this is probably the panel you don’t want to miss.Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Panel (Room 6BCF, 2:45pm-3:45pm): Modern Sesame Street puppeteers Sonia Manzano, Matt Vogel, Eric Jacobson, and Ryan Dillon, along with Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, gather to talk about the show’s history and future. And considering the puppeteers will have their characters on hand, expect the Count, Grover, Maria, and Elmo to drop by. This one is totally for con-goers with kids or affection for the Sesame Street Muppets.Snowpiercer On TBS (Indigo Ballroom, 3:00pm-3:50pm): Snowpiercer has had a long road from French graphic novel to film and, finally, to television. But after many delays, it is ready to debut on TBS. Join stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Lena Hall, Steven Ogg and executive producer/showrunner Graeme Manson as they offer a first look at the series set aboard a perpetually moving train.(Photo by Jay Maidment / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)MUST SEE OF THE DAY: Marvel Studios Presentation (Hall H, 5:15pm-6:45): This is the main event. After taking the last couple of years off from Comic-Con, Marvel Studios returns to release some information about Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We think you can expect first-look footage from Black Widow, casting announcements for The Eternals and Shang-Chi, and maybe even confirmations about Phase 4 release dates. Since previous Marvel Studios Hall H panels included actors appearing in costume, we suspect Benedict Cumberbatch will don his Doctor Strange robes and use the mystic arts to reveal something about that film’s upcoming sequel. We’re also going to assume the presentation will be movies only, with Marvel Studios holding back details about their various Disney+ limited series until the D23 convention in August.Sunday, July 21If you have any energy left from Saturday’s marathon, Sunday at Comic-Con offers a few key presentations and a lot of interesting curios. Formerly known as Children’s Day, it also offers a lot of programming geared toward younger geeks, such as IDW’s Comics for Kids! panel at 10:30am in Room 23ABC. But if you’re more of a media consumer, we expect these will be the panels you’re looking for:Ryan FujitaniRiverdale (Hall H, 11:45am-12:45pm): It has now become a tradition for the Riverdale gang to assemble in Hall H for a sneak peek of the upcoming season. Will their attempts to have a “normal” senior year be undone by the specter of the past, evil fathers, and their own actions? Series stars and producers will be on hand to answer questions and, occasionally, evade revealing too much about the show.Star Trek Eyewitness: An Hour With 1964 Pilot Director Robert Butler (Room 29AB, 12:00-1:00pm): If you’re a Trekkie, this might be the most important hour of the weekend. Trekland Live brings Robert Butler – director of the original Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage” – to Comic-Con for a chat about those early days of the series, his involvement in some of the iconography still with us today, and his reaction to the use of “Cage” characters in Star Trek: Discovery. It should be a fascinating discussion for those involved with Trek or interested in television of the 1960s.(Photo by Frank Ockenfells III/The CW -- © 2016 The CW Network)MUST SEE OF THE DAY: Supernatural (Hall H, 10:30am-11:30am): Throughout the years, Supernatural’s annual Comic-Con appearance has been filled with remarkable moments and surprises. And considering this is their last Hall H appearance, we expect emotions will be heightened and the surprises all the more, er, surprising. While there will be some talk about the upcoming 15th and final season, the hour promises to be something of a retrospective as well.Like this?
