亚博买球怎么样采用百度引擎9(Baidu 3)Zac Efron is the talk of the Sundance Film Festival for his portrayal of serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. And, according to the first wave of reviews from Park City, it’s a career-changing performance. The rest of the movie around Efron, which is directed by renowned documentarian Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost), seems to be dividing critics as to whether the Bundy biopic works – it s currently at 70% on the Tomatometer after 10 reviews. Depending on which critic you read, the biopic – which is approached from the perspective of Bundy’s girlfriend, played by Lily Collins – is either chillingly effective or uneven and tonally misguided. Here’s what the critics are saying about Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile:How great is Efron?“Efron is savagely convincing in the most psychologically-layered performance of his career.” Carlos Aguilar, The Wrap Efron is pretty pitch perfect here, delivering the best performance of his career thus far.” Adam Chitwood, Collider“It does the work of so many Sundance star turns, reframing an actor’s profile at perhaps a crux point in their career.” Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair“It’s a theatrical, absorbing performance.” Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies“A scenery-chewing spectacle.” Jordan Raup, The Film Stage“Despite Efron’s conviction and good looks, he gives us an inscrutable Bundy that never pulls us in.” Tim Grierson, Screen International A stunt casting move that somewhat works, but just doesn’t always quite fit.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)How is his co-star, Lily Collins?“Collins does a great job of keeping it all together with the character of Elizabeth, which is no easy task.” Adam Chitwood, Collider“[Efron is] matched at every turn by Lily Collins.” Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm“Against Efron’s juggernaut performance, Collins just can’t quite keep up.” Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies“Collins is mostly captured in one-note takes of suffering.” Carlos Aguilar, The WrapAre there any other noteworthy performances?“John Malkovich is excellent as the sharp-tongued, theatrical judge.”  Chris Bumbray, Jo Blo’s Movie Emporium“Only Kaya Scodelario, deftly playing obsessed Bundy groupie Carole Anne Boone, transcends the material.” Carlos Aguilar, The Wrap“Scodelario is the weak link in an otherwise strong cast…she seems like she’s auditioning for Saturday Night Live rather than playing a real-life figure.” Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Brian Douglas.)So how is the movie itself? “[It’s] a thought-provoking piece of cinema that avoids the easy temptation of shock value in favor of a more philosophical take on a diabolical murderer.” Carlos Aguilar, The Wrap“A curiosity even if it falters in what it intially sets out to accomplish.”- Jordan Raup, The Film Stage“The movie itself is only average…good enough to recommend.” Chris Bumbray, Jo Blo’s Movie Emporium“It’s a star vehicle that starts and ends with its star, the film around him struggling to justify its existence.” Benjamin Lee, The Guardian“[Berlinger] has, essentially, crafted the Bundy biopic that the convicted serial killer would have himself made.” Tim Grierson, Screen InternationalDoes the movie glamorize Bundy and his killings?“It’s the rare film about a criminal that offers human details without humanizing a man who so many agree was a monster.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“The movie feels almost sympathetic to Bundy.” Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair“Extremely Wicked rings hollow and false and is really just as interested in the sensational and salacious as any other reductive thriller.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist“Extremely Wicked settles for glamorizing, yet again, a murderer who s been glamorized enough already.” Angie Han, Mashable“If the script by Michael Werwie had more restraint to focus solely on Kloepfer’s perspective, then his romanticization might have been more warranted.” Jordan Raup, The Film StageHow does the movie balance the material?“That sense of whiplash? It’s a feature, not a bug in Berlinger’s film.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“[The] switch in narrative creates tonal problems, as Berlinger often goes for comedy – which seems all wrong for this type of story.”  Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm“[It’s] a film that wants to have it both ways, ultimately coming up short.” Jordan Raup, The Film Stage“The tone is objectionable, sometimes odious too…Berlinger simply wants to eat his cake and have it too and…it’s more than a little offensive.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist

(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)FALL 2020 TV SURVEY: 30 MOST ANTICIPATED RETURNING SHOWSFor Rotten Tomatoes’ annual Fall TV Survey, we asked 1,000 of our users what they’re most looking forward to in the coming TV season and to reflect on the best shows from seasons past. While the fall TV season might not necessarily look the same as it did a year ago, there s still plenty of programming headed to the small screen in the next few months. The main difference: premiere dates. Sure, there are fewer shows coming back, but the more noticeable change is the fact that most shows won t premiere in September (or even October) like normal. Theoretically, though, many of our favorite series are headed back to TV before 2020 is over. The first question in our Fall TV Survey was which returning shows fans were most looking forward to. Readers were given more than one vote, allowing them to spread the love around. (Come on, who only watches one single show?)Unsurprisingly (for anyone who s seen it, at least), The Mandalorian topped the list — by a wide margin. Around 47 percent of users are looking forward to the live-action Star Wars series second season, with 30 percent of women and 52 percent of men all voting for the Disney+ hit. The title is by far the most universally beloved series across all demographics with 50 percent of respondents in the 18-34 age bracket; 47 percent in the 35-54 bracket; and 21 percent in the 55 and over bracket.FX s Fargo, with the delayed season 4 (starring Chris Rock) premiering in September, was in second place among Rotten Tomatoes users at 18 percent. And in third, NBC s time-jumping tearjerker This Is Us, with 16 percent of respondents saying they re looking forward to season 5 (21 percent of women, 9 percent of men). Grey s Anatomy scored much higher among women than men (13 percent vs. 4 percent), while men were far more excited about the return of Fargo (18 percent vs. 7 percent) and Star Trek: Discovery (17 percent vs. 6 percent). And while 15 percent of users aged 55 and up were excited about The Crown (and 10 percent of users aged 35-54), just 6 percent of the 18-34 demo were looking forward to the historical Netflix drama.Read on to find out all of Rotten Tomatoes users’ most anticipated returning series.Disagree with the survey results? Tell us in the comments who you think should have made the list or have been ranked higher.

(Photo by Anna Kooris courtesy Sundance Institute)Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: You and the internet have been waiting so long for this movie to come out. But now that it is coming out, where do you want to go next? Got some new stories in mind?King:  I ve always been a writer. It s just how I process my trauma. Once I write something down, and I got it on paper, I feel like I can then move on. Like, that s my step one. So I hope to keep writing. I mean, I have a million other stories. I always say, like, if you guys think this was something, You see what I did last weekend? I always have something going on, and I guess I have a niche for storytelling. That s just how I talk, though. I tell a story the way that I would talk to my homegirl. So hopefully, I just keep at it. I have so many experiences that I could share. I worked in sex work for four or five years. I ve met some very interesting characters who I think I m definitely willing to talk about and piggyback off of this for sure.Rotten Tomatoes:  We will be waiting and ready to read it when you do. For Zola, it has to be so weird to know someone is playing you. How did you get to know Taylour, and how much time did you spend with her, because that s such an intimate thing.King: Absolutely. I was saying earlier, it was kind of a manifestation thing, because I had my eyes set on her before I knew anything. I had my eyes set on her before she even knew that I had that thought. So when it happened, I understood I could trust them, because we had all been kind of fighting towards the same goal. By the time we met at Sundance, we had got really, really close, just talking all the time. She wanted to really get a feel. Do you know what I mean? And Taylour is so sweet. She actually wanted my blessing, in a way. I m like, Girl, you got it! We talked all the time. She wanted to see my facial expressions. So we had a lot of the late-night zooms, because she just really wanted to do it justice. And I think she did her due diligence. She s me. She did it.Zola is now playing in select theaters.Thumbnail images by Everett Collection, Miramax Films, (c) Island Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection On an Apple device? This week in TV news saw some major changes for HBO talent, an update to your Netflix subscription, live-action Cowboy Bebop casting, and plenty more developments.TOP STORYWestworld Bosses Find New Home(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Westworld creators Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy have just signed a reported nine-figure, four-year deal with Amazon to create new content for the company s TV studio and streaming service. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo will be making upwards of million per year at their new home. But what does that mean for Westworld, which is currently in production on its third season? The short answer is nothing; the third season of the series is still likely going to air on HBO in 2020, and Joy and Nolan are running the show. The long answer, though, is slightly more involved. Joy and Nolan had been working at Warner Bros. TV, which produces Westworld. And while they re moving their production company to Amazon, they re still planning to stay on board as writers and executive producers on Westworld for the life of the show, according to the report, which means nothing is changing day-to-day for season 3, and should the show be renewed for a fourth season, continuing to run their series is a top priority. Essentially, all their new work from now on will be done under the Amazon umbrella, but Westworld is staying put and they re staying involved. So breathe easy, it ll still be the complicated sci-fi drama you know and love.Netflix Raises Prices(Photo by Netflix)Netflix is raising its prices again: The streaming service’s biggest price increase to date will increase the two-HD stream Standard plan by per month to .99; Premium (four Ultra HD streams) is also increasing by to .99; and the Basic plan (one non-HD stream) will increase to .99. The new prices take effect for new subscribers immediately, and will be phased in gradually for existing customers based on their billing cycles.Cobra Kai Leads a Trailer BonanzaThere’s a LOT of good television on nowadays, and approximately a dozen TV series dropped trailers for their upcoming seasons this week. You can watch the full trailer for Cobra Kai season 2 above, out April 24. Season 2 brings fans back into the action with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) after the shocking Season 1 cliffhanger featuring the return of John Kreese (Martin Kove). When a new rivalry between opposing dojos is born in the aftermath of Cobra Kai’s controversial win at the All Valley Championships, Daniel realizes his next countermove is to open his own karate training school called Miyagi-Do, in honor of his mentor Mr. Miyagi. What was once a personal feud between Daniel and Johnny escalates beyond their differences to engulf their students, who as teenagers, are already challenged to figure out who they are and who they want to be. Which path will they follow — Cobra Kai or Miyagi-Do?If that s not what you re after, you can follow the links for a teaser for the third season of TNT’s Claws (out June 9), a trailer for the second season of Paramount Network’s Yellowstone (June 19), one for the sixth season of The CW’s The 100 (out April 30), and ones for new series including Netflix’s dark comedy Dead to Me (out May 3), AMC’s horror adaptation NOS4A2 (out June 2), and Epix’s Batman butler prequel series Pennyworth (out this summer). You can also watch the entire first episode of The Chi season 2 ahead of the show s official April 7 debut.Cowboy Bebop Returns(Photo by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images)Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop is finally coming together. The 10-episode series will star John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, and Alex Hassell as a crew of bounty hunters searching for the solar system’s most dangerous criminals and is based on the jazz-inspired Japanese anime series from 2001. Cho will play Spike Spiegel, “an impossibly cool ‘cowboy’ (bounty hunter) with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare. He travels the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, pursuing the future’s most dangerous bounties with a combination of charm, charisma — and deadly Jeet Kune Do.” Shakir is Jet Black, “was one of the few honest cops in the solar system before an ultimate betrayal robbed him of all that he loved, forcing him into a vagabond life of hunting bounties to put food on the table. Jet is an inveterate jazz enthusiast and Captain of the Bebop.” Pineda is Faye Valentine, “a bold, brash and unpredictable bounty hunter. Suffering from amnesia after years of being cryogenically frozen, Faye does whatever it takes to survive. Whether she’s lying, stealing, or just being a thorn in Spike and Jet’s side.” And Hassell is Vicious, “a man who thoroughly enjoys a good kill, Vicious is the Syndicate’s most notorious hitman. He’s also Spike Spiegel’s ex-partner and arch-enemy.” Radical Ed has not yet been cast.Darren Star’s New Leading Lady and More Casting News(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Lily Collins will star in the newest series from Sex and the City and Younger creator Darren Star, a dramedy called Emily in Paris. The new series is set to premiere on Paramount Network in 2020, and will follow the adventures of the titular character (Collins), a driven twentysomething from the Midwest who moves to France for an unexpected job opportunity. The series will tackle her career, friendships, love life, and the challenges of living in a foreign city, and begins filming later in 2019.Hulu’s horror series Light as a Feather has added Robyn Lively (Teen Witch), Katelyn Nacon (The Walking Dead), and several other new cast members for its upcoming second season.Amazon and the Jim Henson Co. (Click to enlarge.)After six grueling rounds full of drama and unexpected developments, one summer blockbuster has emerged from the pack to be crowned the Ultimate Summer Movie, and that movie is Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. The first sequel to the original Star Wars considered by many to be the best of the franchise surprisingly struggled just a bit in the early rounds, as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Sam Raimi s Spider-Man both posed bigger challenges than expected. But Empire rallied to defeat Captain America: Civil War (by its widest margin of victory in the whole tournament), Back to the Future, The Dark Knight Rises, and finally its own franchise successor, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, which it also defeated rather handily. Packed with iconic moments that have influenced the movies for decades, The Empire Strikes Back remains one of the best examples of how to craft an amazing sequel, so it isn t too surprising that it now reigns as the Ultimate Summer Movie! As always, thanks to everyone who voted, and we hope it was a fun diversion for all. Disney’s live-action remakes have made collective billions at the box office. Although it’s early, the latest entry, Tim Burton’s dark take on Dumbo, could be the first failure among the recent films. Meanwhile, Harmony Korine s latest film fails to make a Spring Breakers-level splash, and Us and Captain Marvel continue to impress.King of the Crop: Dumbo Leads But Is Still Very Far Behind(Photo by Disney)While Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book and Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast made a collective billion-plus worldwide, it was Burton’s Alice In Wonderland that really began the live-action remake trend back in 2010. That film remains Burton’s biggest success, a billion-dollar spring hit that was also the second-biggest opening in Disney’s history at the time. (It is now the 17th.) Though Dumbo was not expected to challenge that 6.1 million start, it was also expected to do a lot better than million this weekend. With a 0 million production budget, Dumbo is clearly counting on the international dollar to save it. Even with optimistic projections domestically, no live-action film opening between -49 million stateside has ever reached 0 million. (Disney’s Wild Hogs came closest with 8 million.)Don’t blame critics on this one, as Dumbo’s 50% score on the Tomatometer is not much lower than Alice in Wonderland’s 51%. But that film was also able to market a very bankable (at the time) Johnny Depp, putting him front and center on every poster. Meanwhile, the trailers for Dumbo almost went out of their way to reveal more of the circus than the film’s high-flying star. We’ll update its progress next week.Rotten Returns: The Beach Bum(Photo by NEON / VICE)Neon had a great little story this year with the documentary Apollo 11. With .65 million in the bank, it is the company’s third-highest-grossing title after I, Tonya ( million) and the documentary Three Identical Strangers (.3 million). Harmony Korine s The Beach Bum (51% on the Tomatometer) is likely to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in its catalog, but the 1,005-theater launch only produced .8 million this weekend. That’s the fourth-worst per-theater average for Neon ahead of just Borg vs. McEnroe, Revenge, and the million Sundance pickup Assassination Nation, which had the studio’s widest launch (1,403 theaters) and opened to just .05 million for a per-theater average of 3. In March 2013, A24 released Korine’s last film, Spring Breakers, into 1,104 theaters in its second weekend, where it grossed .85 million on its way to .1 million total. The Top Ten And Beyond: Captain Marvel and Us Continue to Impress(Photo by @ Universal)Last October, Blumhouse released David Gordon Green’s Halloween, which grossed 6 million in its first ten days. Last week, the company released Jordan Peele’s Us, which has now grossed 8 million in its first ten days. Halloween finished its run with just 9.3 million even as it grossed .4 million in its second weekend. However, Us second weekend made .6 million — a smaller drop (52.7 percent) than Michael Myers’ (58.8 percent). Of the 21 films to have grossed between 3-133 million in their first ten days, only six have failed to reach 0 million. Halloween was one of them. Us is forging a path to another incredible milestone, and it has already grossed 4 million worldwide.Captain Marvel maintained its impressive pace with another million this weekend, the 27th-best fourth weekend ever for a wide release. With more than 3 million, it is the 21st best-performing film of all time after 24 days and well on its way to 0 million. Every film to have grossed 0 million in 24 days has reached 0 million, and Captain Marvel’s fourth weekend was higher than six of them (The Dark Knight Rises, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) In other milestone news, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World passed 0 million worldwide this weekend.PureFlix’s abortion film Unplanned made the top five with .1 million, the second-largest opening in the Christian-based company’s history after God’s Not Dead 2. Five Feet Apart continues to enjoy a rather healthy stay in the top five, dropping just another 26.9 percent to .2 million for a running total of nearly million — not bad for a million production. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral passed million and may just have enough in the tank to surpass Boo! A Madea Halloween to become the second-highest-grossing film of his directorial career. Finally, Bleecker Street expanded its harrowing true-life terrorist drama Hotel Mumbai to 924 theaters, and it grossed .1 millon. Where does that rank among the company’s wide launches in more than 650 theaters?A solid fifth, following Logan Lucky (.6 million, 3,031 theaters), Eye in the Sky (.9 million, 1,029 theaters), Megan Leavey (.8 million, 1,956 theaters) and Unsane (.7 million, 2,023 theaters). Hotel Mumbai (.1 million, 924 theaters) finishes ahead of The Lost City of Z (.8 million, 866 theaters), Beirut (.7 million, 755 theaters), Danny Collins (.4 million, 739 theaters), Pawn Sacrifice ( million, 781 theaters), and Trumbo (1,068, 660 theaters). This Time Last Year: Audiences Were Ready For Player One(Photo by Warner Bros)Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One had the second-highest opening of 2018 to date with .7 million. Tyler Perry’s Acrimony placed second with .1 million. Black Panther passed 0 million, and Isle of Dogs for the second straight week had the top per-theater-average (,839), grossing .9 million in just 165 theaters. The top ten films grossed 5.25 million and averaged 55.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated 8.30 million and averaged 58.7% with critics. On the Vine: Shazam! To Lead, But Pet Semetary Could Surprise(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The latest offering from the DC side of the aisle opens with some glorious reviews so far. Shazam has 93% to date on the Tomatometer just three weeks before Avengers: Endgame opens. That’s certainly enough to take the top spot at the box office — and audiences can take it from there. Also blessed with strong early reviews is the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. It boasts a 91% thanks to reviews from closing night of SXSW, and with a solid opening weekend could end up becoming the third-highest-grossing King adaptation to date. Finally, STX releases the educational drama The Best of Enemies with Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell, but in fewer than 2,000 screens. The Full Top 10: March 29-31Dumbo (2019) 46% – million ( million total)Us (2019) 93% – .60 million (8.22 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .50 million (3.80 million total)Five Feet Apart (2019) 53% – .25 million (.87 million total)Unplanned (2019) 42% – .11 million (.11 million total)Wonder Park (2019) 34% – .94 million (.88 million total)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90% – .23 million (2.96 million total)Hotel Mumbai (2018) 76% – .16 million (.27 million total)Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral (2019) 11% – .70 million (.03 million total)The Beach Bum (2019) 57% – .80 million (.80 million total)

Ghcxuf This Women s History Month, Rotten Tomatoes is celebrating some of the biggest female firsts in the movies. From incredible awards milestones to box office triumphs, these big moments in movie history have us pumping our fists, and psyched to see the next round of history being made. (And, of course they only represent a fraction of the firsts that deserve to be celebrated – especially those that don t make the headlines –  so do add to our list in the Comments.)1961 – First Latina to Win an Acting Oscar: Rita Moreno, West Side Story(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Mexican-born Katy Jurado was a regular in American Westerns in the 1950s and was the first Latina to earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, for Broken Lance in 1954. Jurado and actor Rita Moreno traveled in the same circles, reading the same roles, so it’s not surprising that the first Latina to actually win the Oscar for Best Supporting actress was Moreno, for her stellar performance as Anita in 1961’s West Side Story. Moreno didn’t make another film for seven years after receiving her Oscar — she said she didn’t want to do the stereotypical Latina characters anymore — but went on to become an EGOT winner.1963 – First Woman to Be Paid Million Dollars for an Acting Role: Elizabeth Taylor, Cleopatra(Photo by © 20th Century-Fox Film Corp.)Elizabeth Taylor’s talent as an actress may have only come second to her talent as a businesswoman. Her closest friends said she benefitted from her own authenticity, knowing herself and knowing her worth. Her career began when she was just 9, and she was 31 when she became the first actor to fight for a million paycheck for her role in Cleopatra. When asked about the sum, she said, “If someone is dumb enough to offer me a million dollars to make a picture, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.” In 1996, Demi Moore broke records, getting .5 million for Striptease. In 2018, Scarlett Johansson topped all that, earning .5 million dollars that year for starring in two feature films.1973 – First Woman Producer to Win Best Picture: Julia Phillips, The Sting(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Julia Phillips secured the rights to Yentl for Barbra Streisand long before it would get made, but her genius stroke was in getting the rights to The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man, which when adapted would become known as The Sting – Phillips and the film won an Oscar for Best Picture. Phillips would get a nomination three years later for Taxi Driver, but another woman wouldn’t win again until Lili Fini Zanuck in 1989 for Driving Miss Daisy.1977 – First Woman Nominated for Best Director: Lina Wertmüller, Seven Beauties(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Lina Wertmüller’s process could be described as “go big or go home.” The Italian director is an iconoclast who took on racism, capitalism, and class with films like The Seduction of Mimi and Swept Away. Her 1975 picaresque WWII film, Seven Beauties, was a startlingly unconventional take on a Holocaust story, and that brashness earned her the first Oscars directing nom for any woman ever, and the only one for nearly two decades until Jane Campion earned one for The Piano in 1993.1988 – First Woman to Direct a Blockbuster : Penny Marshall, Big(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)After Whoopi Goldberg’s acting nomination for The Color Purple in 1985, she was in a position to recruit Penny Marshall for a directorial debut, helming her film Jumpin’ Jack Flash. Despite negative reviews for Marshall’s directing, James L. Brooks gave her another chance with the Gary Ross/Anne Spielberg script for Big. It would go on to gross more than 0 million dollars, as would a subsequent film, A League of Their Own, making her the first woman to helm a film to earn more than 0 million. Amy Heckerling would also go on to direct a blockbuster in the 1980s, Look Who’s Talking, which made 0 million in the U.S.2001 – First Black Female to Win Best Lead Actress: Halle Berry, Monster s Ball(Photo by @ Lionsgate)The first black woman to win an Oscar came relatively early in the awards history, with Hattie McDaniel winning Best Supporting Actress in 1939 for Gone with the Wind. The lead actress category was a very different story. The first black woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards was Dorothy Dandridge for her role in Carmen Jones in 1954. Diana Ross and Cicely Tyson would go on to get their Oscar noms in 1972, Diahann Carroll in 1974, Whoopi Goldberg in 1985, and Angela Bassett in 1993. But it wouldn’t be until 2001 that Halle Berry — who once portrayed Dandridge in an HBO biopic — would become the first black woman to win Best Actress after taking a chance on Marc Forster’s indie with a million budget.2010 – First Woman to win Best Director at the Academy Awards: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker(Photo by Jonathan Olley/©Summit Entertainment)It’s fitting that Barbra Streisand was on hand to present the Oscar for Best Director at the 2010 Academy Awards, seeing that the three films she directed received a total of 14 Oscar nominations and yet Streisand never got a nod for Best Director herself. Kathryn Bigelow had risen to fame helming gritty crime and genre pictures alongside the boys (Point Break being a particular favorite); when Streisand presented her the Oscar, Bigelow made no mention of being a woman, just of being a director.2017 – First Woman to Open a Film with 0 million: Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros.)Women have directed plenty of box-office pleasers, including Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight (6 million), Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey (1 million), and Jennifer Yuh Nelson’s Kung Fu Panda 2 (5 million). But they’d yet to crack the 0 million open, until Patty Jenkins helmed Wonder Woman in 2017. Though Jenkins gained critical acclaim for her indie film Monster (2003), Wonder Woman gave her box-office power, raking in more than 0 million worldwide and counting.2019 – First Female Cinematography Oscar Nominee (and first to gross a billion): Rachel Morrison, Mudbound and Black Panther(Photo by Steve Dietl / © Netflix / courtesy Everett Collection)Female cinematographers make up only about 4 percent of membership of the American Society of Cinematographers, the organization to which most Oscar-nominated cinematographers belong. To make it as a cinematographer, women must sometimes align themselves with directors, like Rachel Morrison has with Ryan Coogler. Her work on his film Fruitvale Station caught the eye of Dee Rees, who nabbed her as cinematographer for her lush Southern epic Mudbound, which earned Morrison her first Oscar nomination — the first for any woman in the category. Then Morrison re-teamed with Coogler for Black Panther, which grossed more than a billion dollars, a record for any film lensed by a woman.2019 – First Woman to direct a Marvel Studios film: Anna Boden (co-director Captain Marvel)(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Marvel Studios)Though women have directed movies based on comics before — like Rachel Talalay’s Tank Girl, The Wachowskis’ Speed Racer, Nisha Ganatra’s The Hunters, Lexi Alexander’s Punisher: War Zone — it took 20 films and an entire decade before the MCU hired its first female at the helm. Anna Boden came from the indie world, co-writing Half-Nelson and co-directing Mississippi Grind and Sugar, but her pitch to Kevin Feige, drawing on the work of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s run of Captain Marvel, was enough to secure her the role of co-director and co-writer of the character’s debut feature film.Like this?
