While 2019 will be stuffed with a diverse array of content from Stargirl to The Boys, the future of comic books on television looks to be an even wider field of genres and characters. Let’s take a look at some of these live-action projects and their current status.UPDATE 2/4/19: FX has officially ordered a series based on the comic Y: The Last Man that is set to debut in 2020. Titled simply Y, the series stars Diane Lane, Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, and Amber Tamblyn, and was co-created and written by Michael Green and Aïda Mashaka Croal. According to FX, Y takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival. Keep reading to find out more about this title and others.Jupiter’s LegacyPremise: While a generation of superheroes who came to prominence in the 1930s embrace their twilight years, their children find taking up their legacies far more difficult than they ever imagined. Based on the comic book by Millar and Frank Quitely.Status: One of the two Millarworld television shows Netflix announced in July 2018. Steven S. DeKnight, who produced the first season of Daredevil, will adapt the comic book into an eight-episode series. In February of 2019, the streaming service announced the primary cast, which includes Josh Duhamel as The Utopian — aka Sheldon Sampson — the leader of a superhero team known as The Union who finds himself disconnected from his family and, increasingly, the modern world. Leslie Bibb will play his wife Grace. She is one of the most powerful people on the planet, but regulates that power while trying her best to balance Sheldon’s ideals with the difficult modern world. Ben Daniels will play Sheldon s brother Walter— aka Brain-Wave — a smart man, as his superhero name suggests, who is willing to use the sort of violence Sheldon avoids. Other cast members include Elena Kampouris as Sheldon and Grace’s rebellious daughter Chloe, Andrew Horton as their son Brandon, who is trying his best to become the next Utopian, Mike Wade as Fitz Small, a former hero who keeps The Union running, and Matt Lanter as George Hutchence, The Utopian’s former friend and principle antagonist who goes by the name Skyfox.American Jesus(Photo by Image Comics)Premise: When a 12-year-old boy discovers he is the Second Coming of Christ, he is forced to grow up very quickly and deal with the fate of the world. Y’know, the typical pre-teen problems. Based on Millar’s ongoing comic book with artist Peter Gross.Status: The second of the Millarworld shows for Netflix. Luke Cage veteran Everardo Gout and brother Leopoldo Gout will executive produce the six-episode series.Katy Keene(Photo by Archie Comics)Premise: Based on Archie Comics characters, the potential series will follow Katy Keene (who has yet to appear on Riverdale) and three others as they pursue big, exciting lives in New York City. While Riverdale only gets to be a musical once a year, this spin-off will be a musical dramedy.Status: The CW ordered a pilot written by Riverdale mastermind Roberto Aguirre-Sacassa and Michael Grassi.Secret Six(Photo by DC Comics)Premise: Based on the popular early-2000s DC title by Gail Simone and Dale Eaglesham (for the most part) and an earlier DC Comics concept, Secret Six centers on six criminals forced to work together under the direction of the mysterious Mockingbird. Though their personalities initially chafe, they become a lovable ersatz family.Status: Announced in October, CBS plans to develop the series with Rick Muirragui set to write and executive produce.(Photo by Macall Polay/FX)Premise: Following a devastating event, Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand are the last mammals on Earth with the Y chromosome. Alongside a former government agent and a geneticist, they set out on a journey across the partially collapsed United States to secure the future of the species. Based on the DC/Vertigo series Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra.Status: FX announced on Feb. 4 that it ordered the project, called simply Y, to series. It stars Diane Lane and Barry Keoghan as Yorick. Other stars include Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, and Amber Tamblyn. Described as a “a cracked mirror to look at our own very cracked world,” it will debut in 2020.American Flagg!(Photo by First Comics)Premise: Taking its cues from the Howard Chaykin comic book, the series will follow Reuben Flagg, a former TV star turned policeman who witnesses widespread corruption in mall the size of Chicago run by an exiled US government and various corporate sponsors. Believe it or not, it is meant to be a satire.Status: The television distribution arm of EuropaCorp s (producers of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets) obtained the rights to Flagg! in 2017, but little has changed since then except the production company s own financial woes. In December, it announced 1 million loss and 42 percent drop in revenue and a renewed focus on core business in feature films. The company also sold its French TV division, so Flagg! s fate may not be good.Locke Key(Photo by IDW Publishing)Premise: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriquez’s great comic book centers on the family of a slain San Francisco man who move to his ancestral home in Massachusetts. There, his youngest son discovers the house confers special abilities to the residents by unlocking certain rooms with specially designed keys. But a demon hiding in the nearby well wants those powers for itself.Status: After two pilots — one for Fox in 2011 and one for Hulu last year — the series is finally coming to fruition in a 10-episode Netflix series. While Jackson Robert Scott returns as younger son Bode, many of the actors from the earlier pilots have been replaced. Carlton Cuse, who executive produced the Hulu pilot, will remain as showrunner with Haunting of Hill House s Meredith Averill joining him for the Netflix version.Astro City(Photo by Image Comics)Premise: Based on Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson, and Alex Ross’ expansive series of comic book stories, the series will center on the lives of ordinary people and the super-powered individuals flying above them. All of them will face Earth-shattering calamities and human-sized versions of great comic book upheavals. They also have to figure out to make a living in this crazy men-in-tights world.Status: FremantleMedia North America, the company that produces American Gods, acquired the rights in March of last year. Busiek is set to write the pilot with Rick Alexander, while Gregory Noveck is executive producer.Dylan Dog(Photo by Sergio Bonelli Editore)Premise: Don’t let his resemblance to Rupert Everett fool you, Dylan Dog is not a film star, but a fantastic paranormal detective. Granted, he gets personally involved with his clients and the paranormal often gets the best of him, but the important thing is that he means well. Also, his best friend may or may not be Groucho Marx. Based on comics by Tiziano Sclavi and a number of other writers and artists.Status: In August of last year, Dylan Dog publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore announced plans to form its own entertainment arm and develop an English-language Dylan Dog television show. The 10-episode series is expected to also launch a number of other Bonelli characters into television — provided the company ever finds production partners and an outlet willing to air or stream the show.Survivors Club(Photo by Vertigo/DC Comics)Premise: Many years after a demon possessed twins Jason and Jennifer and killed their mother, the siblings join a support group for the ex-possessed. But then a new evil arises, forcing the group to become a demon-hunting team. Based on the DC/Vertigo series by Lauren Beukes, Dale Halverson, and Ryan Kelly.Status: Because apparently six series based on DC Comics properties isn t enough, The CW announced plans to develop Survivors Club back in November with Sweet/Vicious’s Jared Frieder writing the pilot.MIND MGMT(Photo by Dark Horse Comics)Premise: Based on Matt Kindt’s comic book, true crime writer Meru’s attempts to understand a mysterious plane flight leads to a world of powers and secret organizations. She’s joined on her journey by Henry Lyme, a rogue agent looking to destroy his former employers.Status: Universal Cable Productions optioned the television rights in 2017, acquiring other Dark Horse Comics titles like Jennie Wood’s Flutter at the same time. The production company and Dark Horse s partnership also includes titles like Harrow County and Concrete. With their first collaboration, The Umbrella Academy, about to debut on Netflix, it is possible any of those titles could prove to be a worthy follow-up.LazarusPremise: The Greg Rucka and Michael Lark comic book takes place in a near future controlled by 16 rival families attempting to gain more power, territory, and resources. To combat various threats to their status quo, each family has a chosen defender known as a Lazarus. One such Lazarus is Forever Carlyle, protector of the family in control of much of the world’s food supply, who is starting to doubt her place in the world.Status: Amazon picked up the rights during a spending spree in 2017 that included options on the science fiction novels Ringworld and Snow Crash. Rucka was said to be writing the script, but considering Amazon’s commitment to a massive The Lord of the Rings TV universe, it is unclear if there is still money for these sci-fi ideas.Quantum and Woody(Photo by Valiant Entertainment)Premise: Brothers Eric and Woody Henderson have fantastic superpowers, but they must “klang” their power bands together once a day or the energies they contain will kill them. Eric is a traditional buttoned-down hero while, Woody is something of a slacker. Also, there’s a goat. Based on the Valiant comic book created by Christopher Priest and M.D. Bright.Status: Back in 2017, Joel McHale was said to be in talks to play Woody, but this never came to fruition and McHale found himself a hero role on the upcoming DC Universe series Stargirl. Quantum and Woody appeared to slink back into development hell without securing lead actors.Sex Criminals(Photo by Image Comics)Premise: When Suzie and Jon discover they can both stop time when they orgasm, they decide to rob a bank. It only gets weirder from there. Based on the comic book by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky.Status: Fraction and wife Kelly Sue DeConnick signed an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions in 2015 through their production company, Milkfed Criminal Masterminds. The option to develop Sex Criminals into a TV show was part of the deal, but there has been no movement since.DreadstarPremise: Jim Starlin’s sci-fi/fantasy epic follows Dreadstar, last survivor of the Milky Way galaxy, as he attempts to end an eons-old conflict between the Church of Instrumentality and an ancient monarchy. But whichever group wins, the kind-hearted people of the cosmos will lose.Status: Universal Cable Productions optioned Dreadstar in 2015.The Wicked + The Divine(Photo by Image Comics)Premise: Every 90 years, the gods return. For two years, they live and are worshipped. Then they die. This time around, they look and act like pop stars. But their cycle of death and rebirth may be coming to an end. Based on the comic book by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie.Status: Like Sex Criminals, rights to “WicDiv” were scooped up in a deal with Universal Cable Productions and Milkfed Criminal Masterminds. But like most of the comic books UCP optioned in the last few years, there has been no news since. Considering it took four years for UCP to get Umbrella Academy to series, there is hope yet. Sci-fi series Snowpiercer has exercised a proven tactic in upping the genre stakes as it moves into its second season: It’s added Sean Bean to the mix.According to series star Daveed Diggs, who plays underdog hero Andre Layton in the returning TNT series, Bean s sinister character is a different kind of villain. The charisma that he exudes is a very difficult thing to fight, Diggs told Rotten Tomatoes about Bean s Mr. Wilford. The charismatic villain is the man whose company built this high-speed train before the Freeze turned the planet into an uninhabitable ball of ice. Up until now, we were led to believe Wilford was dead; season 1 revealed that Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) controlled the vessel, while perpetuating the appearance that Wilford was alive and running the train. By the end of season 1, we discover that Wilford was indeed still alive and all this time had been plotting a vengeful course back to Snowpiercer aboard a supply train named Big Alice. In a politically tremulous atmosphere on Snowpiercer after a revolution and casualties, the hard-fought new world order erupts into chaos once again when Big Alice and Snowpiercer meet.(Photo by David Bukach/TNT)There s a joke that makes fun of the number of times Game Of Thrones alum Bean has died on-screen (think GOT, GoldenEye, Lord of the Rings, and more). That s all in the past, though; if Bean s performance as the new big bad in Snowpiercer is an example of anything, it s that the actor is wonderfully alive in this deliciously evil role. Sean brings such an incredible energy to the character, Diggs explained.Connelly added: His performances are so fearless. They re so unhinged. He seems to be having a blast playing that part. He s a showman. The stage has been set, and now that Wilford is back, he ll definitely be gunning to take back what he believes is rightfully his: Snowpiercer, the train that Melanie took from him all those years ago. So he s not exactly wrong, but his coup attempt won t be so simple. Make no mistake, he is really not out for the wellbeing of the train, Connelly said. Melanie knows that. And that s the reason why, ultimately, she took the train from him. She knew he didn t have the train s, and the passengers , best interests in mind. (Photo by David Bukach/TNT)It was an arduous uphill battle for Diggs Andre Layton throughout the first season, as he laid the groundwork for the Tailie revolution (the uprising of those in Third Class). The fight for equality amid the array of racism, classism, and sexism put Layton in a strong, albeit unexpected, position of leadership. But now that he s gained some semblance of the power, the way forward is as complex as it is uncertain. What exactly is the best way to deal with a megalomaniac, anyway? He is used to appealing to this idea of what is the right thing to do, in terms of winning people over to his side, Diggs said. But now, what he s met with on the train is a bunch of people who ve been promised a whole bunch of things by somebody who looks like they are the beneficiary of a whole bunch of those things. In a battle of hearts and minds, that s a tricky foe to come up against. With a pause and a laugh, Diggs added: Wilford is not actually concerned with people, but people still love him. How hard is that? And how familiar is that? Wilford s introduction to the series throws a lot of things off-kilter, but it also helps to forge new partnerships that were unthinkable just one year ago. If there s truth to the phrase, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, then the partnership of former foes, Layton and Melanie, makes complete sense. After all, their common goal is to protect the train, and its citizens, no matter the cost.(Photo by David Bukach/TNT) Adding Melanie into that fold as someone that Layton ends up caring about is a dangerous thing to do on an emotional level, Diggs added. Then, the realization that, if Layton s new government is one that respects the science of the thing, which is really what Melanie represents, and what she understands better than anybody, she could, in fact, actually build the train. One thing Melanie didn t account for when she stole Snowpiercer was the problematic system that was already in place — and as Connelly explained, it was one riddled with a whole bunch of societal issues and corruption. That foundation absolutely encouraged her own heinous behavior in season 1, and it s what ended up sparking the Tailie uprising that put Layton on her radar. The train called for change, and I think there was a hell of a lot about that system that she didn t agree with, and she didn t like, she continued. I don t think that, in reality, her politics were so far off from Layton s. He was sort of a catalyst for her to recognize that she was sort of tuning out so much, and it was at such a great cost. As Diggs points out, that choice comes with a fair share of repercussions: This person who had been an enemy for so long has to become someone that Layton is choosing to side with over people who have been friends of his. And that s tough. It s a challenging move but the partnership strengthens them both, and that support structure is something Melanie needs going into these new episodes; not only does Wilford represent a threat to the health of the train and its people, his re-emergence brings back a whole load of unresolved trauma from Melanie s past.(Photo by David Bukach/TNT)Melanie s long-estranged daughter Alexandra Cavill (Rowan Blanchard) is also along for the ride. Melanie believed Ali was dead — having left her behind when she took over the train. But after seven years, here she suddenly is, very much alive and under the tutelage of Melanie s greatest adversary. Talk about a complicated reunion. All of that stuff plays out; all of that grief, and loss, and fear, and relief, and joy, and love, and dread, Connelly said. I think for Melanie, she sees her daughter, and of course, she wants to resume that relationship. But she s also mature enough to recognize that s not the reality of their dynamic at this point. She has to earn that trust back. And it s not going to be that simple. Snowpiercer season 2 premieres on Monday, January 25 at 9 p.m. on TNT.

3. 激战团竞模式
The mix of genres and tones made it something special and something worth shepherding through two development cycles and two streaming platforms.“There s horror, there s fantasy, there s magical keys, there s a murder mystery, there s teen drama. And trying to sort those all out and kind of calibrate them and put them all together and make them all work together was something that s hard to do, Cuse said.“It doesn t fit into a box,  Averill added, which I think is what s made it difficult and a challenge to adapt, but also what makes it so special and unique.”Cuse credited Averill with helping him “finding a shared vision for how we wanted to do the show.” At the same time, he considers the long development something akin to the way many TV shows begin.“Just in the same way that if you make a pilot, you ve made calibrations and readjustments [for its eventual series], we tried to learn lessons from the previous iterations,” Cuse said. Those lessons led Cuse and Averill away from the more grotesque horror elements – though some of that still occurs – into a series which leans more into the family and fantasy aspects of the comic book. Averill said it was a conscious decision to avoid the graphic horror because “once you go there, there s sort of no going back once you ve set that tone.” Also, she noted the material does not have to be gory to be scary.“There are other ways to get there,” she said. And the other ways the television series gets to some of Locke Key’s ideas may surprise readers of the comic the most. Elements barely hinted at in the initial two stories become important touch points in the program’s first season. Character relationships are refocused and, perhaps most unsettling for some fans of the comic, the town of Lovecraft is now Matheson – a reference to horror and sci-fi writer Richard Matheson, who also worked in television and saw his stories adapted into films like I Am Legend and The Box.(Photo by Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix)As both producers pointed out, bringing a comic book to television is an exercise in “adaptation, not translation.”“I think that we were so fortunate to get the freedom to remix from Joe Hill himself,” Cuse revealed. “I mean Joe was an active participant in our creative process. He co-authored the pilot. We had a lot of conversations with him all along the way. And his comment was, ‘Just doing a literal adaptation of my comic would be boring.’ And so he liberated us to not be afraid to really follow our creative instincts and desires.”Those instincts often led the team to bring ideas from later in the comic into the forefront of the show for the sake of clearly delineating character ambitions. In the case of Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira, pictured), whose motivations are a mystery for some time in the book, Averill felt it was important to reveal the character’s true nature and objective as soon as possible. She was also pleased by the way it dovetailed into stories of the Locke family in Matheson.“I think it s a really nice reveal for our kids when they discover that what s happening to them now has to do [with Dodge],” she said.Other changes, like the Locke family initially living in Seattle instead of San Francisco were for “aesthetic” reasons and often suggested by Hill himself, who Cuse said was fascinated with the process and used the opportunity to make changes to his world. This is also the underlying reason Lovecraft became Matheson.“He just wanted to pay homage to Richard Matheson who had died recently,” Cuse explained.Connor Jessup, who plays oldest Locke son Tyler – and who came to the series with the Netflix iteration – felt the long development and remixing of ideas aided the show it getting to the core spirit of the comic.“I think [it’s] about growing up through trauma, essentially,” he said.As a result, the show feels more of like a fantasy adventure to him than the gothic horror he saw in the comics when he sat down to read them. But part of Locke Key’s magic, both as a comic book and as a television show, revolves around the way it transforms into different genres with each scene and combination of characters. This was part of the appeal for Darby Stanchfield, who plays the grieving Locke matriarch Nina.“It s almost like three different layers wrapped up in one,” she said.Of those layers – the fantasy, the mystery, and the family – Stanchfield felt from talking with Cuse and Averill that the family aspect was the most important. The Lockes have been thought a lot when we first meet them and their first few months in Matheson are no easier. Nevertheless, the Lockes’ bond endures and, to Stanchfield, forms the heart of the show.“Which to me really extended to the heart of the kids and their high school friends, she added. In perhaps one of the bigger departures from the initial comic book storylines, a group of high school kids called “The Savini Squad” — in honor of horror effects make-up legend Tom Savini — become prominent in the story very quickly, which was another one of Hill’s ideas for the show. Cuse said their appeal became apparent thanks to the iteration process.“It just seemed like, OK, this is going to be a big part of the show, he said. We should meet them in the pilot, we should get going with this.”The group, which quickly adopts Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones) into their number, will no doubt become fan favorites. No matter how the show will be perceived, though, its curious production history will always be a part of its story. For Stanchfield and Jessup, taking over roles cast twice previously was something akin to taking over a part on stage. Nevertheless, there was some trepidation about watching the earlier versions.“At one point someone asked me if I would be interested in seeing the Hulu version of it, which was the previous version. And it unlocked like an enormous terror in me,” Jessup said. “I mean I m sure they did a beautiful job, but the thought of seeing someone else in the same situations still makes my skin — I feel so uncomfortable about it.”Stanchfield also avoided the other pilots, but part of her decision to do so was on instruction from Averill and Cuse (pictured), who saw through her initial performance as Nina a new way to develop the character.“We like your approach and we want you to just go with that,” she recalled them saying. That difference in the character will be immediately apparent to readers of the comic, but Nina’s underling problems will eventually surface. In fact, the unexpected way Locke Key utilizes its source material may earn it a special place in viewers hearts — provided fans of the comic see the value in the ways it is not a literal translation.“I hope the people who like the comics also like our show and that they are open to the changes and that they re excited by and surprised by some of the things that we do differently,” Jessup said. “For me it s always more exciting [that way]. I mean, I love the comics too, and I wouldn t want the show to try and be a cheap shadow imitation of it. I think it s better for the comics and for the show if it tries and finds its own language.”Locke Key launches Friday, February 7 on Netflix.Like this? Back in 2004, Guillermo del Toro had arguably his first true mainstream success with an adaptation of a Mike Mignola comic series about a half-demon superhero with a dark sense of humor; that movie was Certified Fresh and went on to spawn an even better-reviewed sequel. Fifteen years later, we get a reboot of the character, with Stranger Things David Harbour taking over for Ron Perlman in the title role, and the reviews have been less than kind. Neil Marshall, the director behind celebrated fan-favorite horror flick The Descent, steps behind the camera here, recounting Hellboy s origins and setting him against a centuries-old sorceress who just wants to make demon babies with him and rule the world. Unfortunately, critics say Hellboy certainly earns its R rating, but not necessarily in the right ways, mistaking F-bombs and mindless gore for humor and imagination. It s an unfortunate reimagining of a normally fun character that strands him in a messy, poorly constructed story, then drowns him in blood and severed limbs and hopes the audience won t notice.

Best-Reviewed TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy 2020HBO strikes again in the Golden Tomato Awards, the year after Watchmen ruled multiple categories, Lovecraft Country takes the top spot in the sci-fi/fantasy category. The series, which stars Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett, takes its inspiration from the weird and horror fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. Season 2 of The Mandalorian docks in the second spot – Baby Yoda on board! – while last year’s winner in the category, Dark, finds its third season at No. 3 and a double dose of Star Trek — Discovery season 3 and the first season of Picard — rounds out the top 5. All were Certified Fresh as of December 31, 2020, at 11:59 p.m., the cutoff for our television categories in 2020’s GTA awards, which, due to the theatrical shutdown, split the deadlines for film and television. (Sorry, The Expanse fans — season 5 didn t make the TV cutoff.)The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2020. t this November, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic until next year on April 15, 2022. The movie is less than a year away from release, but it was only this week that we found out the voice cast will include Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Sam Rockwell, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson. In related news, Searchlight Pictures announced this week that their previously-untitled murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan will be called See How They Run, and it will be release sometime in 2022.7. MYSTERIOUS PREDATOR PREQUEL SKULL COMPARED TO SURVIVAL THRILLER THE REVENANT(Photo by Fox/Everett Collection)10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is currently about 75% finished filming his next project, which was confirmed this week to be titled Skull. What that title doesn t tell you is that the film is actually a prequel to a fan favorite sci-fi action franchise: It will tell the story of the the alien hunters from the Predator series in a survival thriller set some time in the past that s being compared to the The Revenant. The only known Skull cast member right now is Amber Midthunder (Legion, The Ice Road), who was reportedly cast as a Comanche warrior woman who is forced to fight a Predator.8. THE CHI STAR JOINS HOUSE PARTY REMAKE AFTER CAST SHAKEUP (Photo by Showtime)Hollywood s remake fever has nearly run out of ideal properties from the 1980s, so the trend is starting to move more and more towards revisiting the 1990s (and by the end of the 2020s, we ll probably start seeing lots of remakes from the 2000s). After several years of development, New Line Cinema is ready to start filming their remake of the 1990 Kid n Play comedy hit House Party. Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair from Doctor Who) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr (Bumblebee) had been cast in April, but Lendeborg reportedly recently dropped out to focus on his mental well-being. His role will instead go to Jacob Latimore of the Showtime series The Chi. The original House Party was an ensemble comedy, so this remake probably will be as well, but none of those roles have been announced yet.9. SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER BLACK WIDOW STREAMING STRATEGY(Photo by Marvel Studios)Walt Disney Pictures received criticism for their decision to stream Black Widow day-and-date with the theatrical release, which has resulted in s its international box office looking like it will to end up about where Scarlett Johansson s Lucy (3 million) did far below most MCU films. Johansson took on the issue directly this week by filing a lawsuit against Disney, accusing the studio over a breach of contract. Key to Johansson s suit is that her contract was based on bonuses from the box office performance of Black Widow, which the lawsuit alleges were significantly reduced because of the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+.  Disney responded by calling the lawsuit sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johansson s agent replied to that as being a direct attack on her character. More reactions can be read here. What is unclear is how this lawsuit will impact  Johansson s future dealings with both Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, where for example, she had just recently developing a movie project based on the Walt Disney Theme Parks attraction Tower of Terror. On an Apple device? 亚博手机版官方 (Photo by David Lee / © Netflix)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: DELROY LINDOWhat more does Delroy Lindo have to do? Often underutilized, sometimes misunderstood, and frequently underappreciated (in our opinion), Lindo has built a formidable career marked by standout turns as intimidating gangsters, forceful authority and father figures, and, lately, a silver-tongued lawyer. His imposing frame, deep and instantly distinctive voice, have imbued intemperate characters with refined strength, and he s worked with some of the greatest filmmakers of our time. In other words: His is an almost textbook Hollywood heavyweight career, one you would expect to be punctuated with Oscar noms and hardware on the mantel. And yet Even the basic facts of his career have been misconstrued. Following his first two film roles, the 1975 John Candy comedy Find the Lady and the sequel to American Graffiti — More American Graffiti — he returned to the stage for a decade, shining in productions of Macbeth and A Raisin in the Sun; it was a move away from film that many misinterpreted as a conscious choice. “That s not a decision that I made,” he says, laughing, while he shakes his head in disbelief. Elsewhere, reports have claimed that Lindo played West Indian Archie in Spike Lee s Malcolm X as manically depressed: “Which is completely inaccurate, he told Rotten Tomatoes, chuckling. The moral of the story is don t listen to the internet. After a stellar 55-year career during which he s brought solemnity to stage, television, and film, an Oscar nomination has eluded Lindo. It’s a gap in his biography that could change after his searing turn as Paul, a Vietnam War vet devastatingly gripped by his past ghosts, in Lee’s 2020 epic Da 5 Bloods. Concerning four Black war veterans returning to Vietnam to recover the remains of Stormin’ Norman (Chadwick Boseman), their fallen commander, and the C.I.A. gold they left buried, Da 5 Bloods not only plays host to arguably the best performance of Lindo’s career, but once more highlights the veteran actor’s distinct ability to bring pathos to complicated, tough-seeming men.Lindo performances may look effortless, but they are wrought from his dedication to craft and his hard work. Through careful research, practicing the hobbies of his subjects, and learning their psychologies, he builds his characters from the floor up. “I m a man of the theater, Lindo says. It involves doing everything that I can to stay as connected as I can to the material. THE DELROY LINDO ESSENTIALS: SPIKE LEE AND THE CIDER HOUSE RULES(Photo by © Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)The stars first aligned for Delroy Lindo while auditioning to be debonair Harlem ‘numbers’ gangster West Indian Archie in Lee’s Malcolm X almost 30 years ago. “The actors had been waiting a long time, he says. I remember Sam[uel L. Jackson] was there in the waiting area. Avery Brooks was there waiting. Denzel Washington, who starred as X, and Lindo earned their acting stripes together as classmates at the American Conservatory Theater in 1977. “Denzel saw the very first scene I ever did in acting school, and I saw the very first scene he ever did,” he says. Washington read opposite Lindo for his Malcolm X audition, a pairing he believes proved advantageous: “It helped that we knew each other. Not from the standpoint of Denzel helping me get the part. I don t mean that at all. But we were both familiar with each other as actors.”Malcolm X inspired a trusting relationship between Lindo and Lee that extended to future collaborations on 1994’s Crooklyn and 1995’s Clockers. In the former, he depicted a father and struggling musician, Woody, barely holding together a destitute Brooklyn family after his wife’s untimely death; for the Brooklyn-set cut-throat gangster flick, Clockers, wherein he portrayed a Fagin-inspired drug lord to a group of young dealers, Lindo suggested impromptu additions to Lee’s script.(Photo by © Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)To show that his Rodney cared for his teenage drug dealers, Lindo requested a scene in which the kingpin helped a pusher with their homework. He suggested another scene, inspired by Richard Price’s original novel, involving the teens racing after Rodney and a rival cop Andre (Keith David). While neither made the film, Lee shot the scenes. “If you come to Spike with a thought or an idea that is not in the script that you feel will enhance the narrative, if there s time and space and money, he ll film it,” Lindo notes. His trio of seminal performances with Lee showed Lindo’s unique ability to humanize morally questionable characters. It was an instrumental skill targeted with devastating accuracy as the frustratingly complicated apple picker Mr. Rose in Lasse Hallström’s moving coming-of-age story, The Cider House Rules. It was a role Lindo initially turned down. “I had lunch with Hallström, and at the end of the lunch, he said something like, ‘Well, you know, the part is the part.’ And I remember saying, ‘God bless you. But this part is not for me.' (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)He changed his mind when the filmmaker granted him further latitude to alter the character. Once attached to the project, a familiar inkling seized him: “I did feel the work was going well in that film. I had a similar feeling on Malcolm X and on Da 5 Bloods. It s a feeling of ‘this feels right.’ There s a rhythm, there s a groove that we re in.”Still, Mr. Rose was a deeply flawed and challenging character to play. A warm friend to the orphaned Homer (Tobey Maguire) during World War II, he’s revealed as a pedophile who rapes and impregnates his own daughter Rose Rose (Erykah Badu). “In preparing to play that part I spoke with two doctors, he says. They both said to me, separately from each other, that in sexually predatory childhood trauma, invariably, the victims protect the perpetrators. Because – not all the time, but frequently – the victims tend to misinterpret the attention of the perpetrators as real love. So I then took that information and I focused on the love point. That was really the only way that I could play that part.”FAN FAVORITES: FAST CARS, GANGSTERS, AND THE IMPACT OF FAME(Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Lindo brought the same laser focus to crafting his characters in big-budget action flicks as he had in prestige dramas and on the stage. On Dominic Sena’s high-octane thriller Gone in Sixty Seconds, in which he plays a detective tracking a gang of Nicolas Cage-led car thieves, Lindo took stunt driving lessons for the film’s exhilarating and hairpin-turn–filled car chases. For Romeo Must Die, Jet Li’s martial arts action vehicle, he dabbled in golf to develop Isaak, underworld father to Aaliyah s Trish. “Everybody says, ‘Oh my God, when you pick up a golf club, you re hooked’ – Courtney Vance said it to me, Lindo tells us, smirking as he recalls his brief dalliance with the sport. “One time I was on a range in Los Angeles. I hit the ball and it was really true. It sailed elegantly, majestically through the air. I said to myself, This must be what causes golfers to become golf addicts. Because you re forever chasing that sensation of watching the ball fly through the air.”He proudly hasn’t picked up a golf club since.(Photo by © Warner Brothers/courtesy Everett Collection)That should come as no surprise. While the actor has plenty of blockbusters to his name, he remains comfortably grounded. Sudden fame, on occasions, can obscure an actor’s prior hard-fought work. Lindo remembers first collaborating with James Gandolfini in 1995 on Barry Sonnenfeld’s Get Shorty, a gangster comedy about a Miami mobster and shyster embroiling themselves in the movie biz, and then re-teaming with The Sopranos actor years later on the Robert Redford-helmed military prison drama, The Last Castle.“It was really fascinating for me to watch how others reacted to him in the context of this major stardom. I remember the director referring to Gandolfini as, and I m paraphrasing right now, ‘One of the most brilliant actors he had ever seen, ” Lindo says. “It was instructive, in terms of what happens when you get that one part that just elevates you into this other sphere. Essentially, you re the same guy, except you ve done this extraordinary work, and now people look at you completely differently.”FRESHEST WORK: A RENAISSANCE BY WAY OF STREAMING AND GETTING BACK WITH SPIKE(Photo by ©Walt Disney Co./courtesy Everett Collection)By way of The Simpsons and Robot Chicken, Lindo periodically explored voice acting, but his most well-known animated appearance, which came with a distinct challenge, can be found in Pixar’s Up. In the beloved Pete Docter film he plays a derpy rottweiler companion to the villainous explorer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), who s hunting the grieving and cynical Carl and a vibrant flightless bird.“That was a completely different experience, because there was no material. There literally were drawings: This is what your character looks like, this is what this scene is,” he says. “To their credit, the director and the producers on Up were assuring me that what I was doing was right on. But in terms of the internal process, it felt slightly disconnected. It involves much more of putting oneself at the mercy of other people. That s hard.”(Photo by © CBS All Access)While speaking to the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater Dance, in 2016, Lindo made mention of a screenplay he has written about his mother’s life as part of the Windrush generation – the people who arrived in the UK from the Caribbean from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. “I have every intention of continuing to work on it and finishing that story because it s a really important story. But I haven t had a chance to actually sit down at the computer recently and actually work on the script,” he says. “If the stars line up, knock on wood, I ll be directing a film at the end of this year. Also my intention is to direct my screenplay.”The ever-busy Lindo experienced a career resurgence in the late 2010s with a Critics’ Choice-nominated performance in the Certified Fresh first season of legal drama, The Good Fight, one of the first series to launch on CBS All Access (now Paramount+). His four-year run as the sober, dignified managing partner Adrian Boseman reminded audiences of Lindo’s gravitas. Then, in 2020, re-teaming with Spike Lee on Da 5 Bloods, Lindo’s distinct ability to give voice to psychologically intricate characters once more came to the surface.(Photo by David Lee / © Netflix)While Lindo’s blistering jungle monologue in the film has rightfully garnered widespread acclaim, his final scene — wherein Paul’s estranged son David (Jonathan Majors) reads a letter from him, eloquently narrated by Lindo – adds a heartfelt layer to Paul’s tangled fatherly love. He compared the sequence to West Indian Archie’s final scene in Malcolm X, wherein the enfeebled former gangster is cared for by his former pupil, X. “Similarly, in Bloods that scene completes Paul’s arc in a beautiful, tender, and also revelatory way. I get to reveal in no uncertain terms, clearly, my love for David, my acknowledgement that all of the crap that has happened in our relationship was not his fault. An already iconic scene set in an Apocalypse Now-themed club, in which Lindo and co-stars perform the Soul Train line dance, has introduced Lindo to a new generation – via GIFs and memes. “My son, a few months ago, said, ‘Man, dad, you re blowing up the internet. Look, look,’” he says, clearly amused. “[The scene] was totally impromptu. We had shot the scenes of us being at the table with the Vietnamese guys staring at us. And then all of a sudden Spike just said, ‘Let s do this.’ Lindo was game.Focus and study, total commitment, and a let’s-do-this attitude have propelled the actor along an enviable career path for almost 60 years – and maybe, just maybe, to the Oscars, too.Da 5 Bloods is available now on Netflix. On an Apple device? Actor Steve Coogan (The Trip, Philomena) is now signed to reunite with his Philomena director Stephen Frears for a comedy/drama called The Lost King, which will tell the true story of historian Philippa Langley, who helped discover King Richard III s remains. Coogan will play Langley s husband, but the actress who will play her hasn t been cast or announced yet.6. PIERCE BROSNAN AND HELENA BONHAM CARTER IN A ROMCOM? NOT BLOODY LIKELY (Photo by Steve Mack, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Almost certainly because of Election Day (or Election Week, as it were), this was actually sort of a slow week for movie news out of Hollywood proper, but England made up for it. One of the projects announced across the pond is Not Bloody Likely, which is described as a romantic comedy (though not necessarily a traditional rom-com ) set during the original 1914 stage production of George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion. If you re not familiar with that title (or the 1938 movie starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller), you might know the 1964 remake My Fair Lady (starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison), or maybe one of the loose remakes like She s All That. Pierce Brosnan will star in Not Bloody Likely as George Bernard Shaw opposite Helena Bonham Carter, who will play an actress that Shaw is determined to cast in the play, but partly just as a ploy to rekindle their past romance. Helena Bonham Carter will soon be seen reprising her role as Princess Margaret in Season 4 of Netflix s The Crown.7. COLIN FIRTH WILL STAR IN A ZOMBIE COMEDY(Photo by Giles Keyte/©Universal Pictures)We may have already gotten to the point of a zombie movie potentially having anybody as its star with Warm Bodies (Nicholas Hoult), The Dead Don t Die (Adam Driver, Bill Murray), and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (where does one even start), but if those films all form some sort of arthouse zombie subgenre, well, we got news of another entry this week. Academy Award winner Colin Firth has signed to star in the tentatively titled zombie movie New York Will Eat You Alive, which will be an adaptation of the Chinese digital comic Zombie Brother. New York Will Eat You Alive will be directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (Isn t It Romantic, Fresh at 70%), and one of the producers will be Channing Tatum, though it s not yet known if Tatum will also take a role in the film. The exact nature of Firth s role isn t clear, but it will reportedly be a chance for him to show off his deadpan humor (get it, because it s a zombie movie, and right, moving along).8. ELLEN PAGE TO STAR IN ESPORTS MOVIE 1UP (Photo by James Atoa/Everett Collection)Hollywood is still slowly working on improving its critical relationship with video game movies, but things have started to get better recently with movies like this year s Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%). One of the reasons Hollywood is compelled to keep trying is that video games continue to be a major pop culture phenomenon (with many younger fans never knowing a time when they weren t). Recently, eSports has grown in popularity  for the unfamiliar, the term refers to organized competitive gaming similar professional sports, including leagues, huge arenas filled with spectators, sponsorship deals, and celebrity players. As big of a deal as eSports has become, it hasn t been the center of a major Hollywood film yet, but that will soon change. Ellen Page and Paris Berelc are now signed to star in 1UP, an underdog comedy set in the world of competitive eSports. 1UP will be directed by Kyle Newman (Fanboys, Rotten at 32%) for BuzzFeed Studios as part of that company s new efforts to expand into film production. Paris Berelc will play a gamer who quits her college eSports team over the sexism of her male teammates, and Ellen Page will play the coach of her new all-women s team (who s dealing with her own recent experience with a GamerGate-style scandal). On an Apple device? 亚博手机版官方 2. AVA DUVERNAY CONFIRMS DARKSEID WILL APPEAR IN NEW GODS (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Paramount Pictures)Earlier this month, Marvel Studios confirmed that their next movie after Black Widow (5/1/2020) will be their adaptation of Jack Kirby s The Eternals (11/6/2020), featuring stars like Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Richard Madden (Robb Stark from Game of Thrones). The Eternals is also arguably in a dueling movies situation, because Warner Bros. is simultaneously also developing its own Jack Kirby movie, New Gods, with Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) attached to direct. This week, DuVernay confirmed that the villains in New Gods will include Darkseid and the Female Furies. DuVernay also said that one of the actors in her Netflix series When They See Us will 99% be cast in New Gods, but that show also has a huge cast, so it s tricky to guess who she might be talking about. As for the Darkseid confirmation, this article points out that Ava DuVernay and Warner Bros. have a Thanos problem, as Darkseid and Thanos have always shared a lot in common, but Marvel Studios has already well established Thanos as a movie character, and Darkseid could easily be seen as a villain-come-lately.3. DUNGEONS DRAGONS MIGHT BE NEXT UP FOR GAME NIGHT (DIRECTORS)It s become nearly cliche for TV shows to feature their characters bonding over the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons Dragons, whether it be on Community, The Goldbergs, or most famously, Stranger Things. If we turn the clock way back 19 years to 2000, however, we can actually see that this arguably started with Freaks and Geeks, which had an episode where James Franco s character bonds with the titular geeks over D D. (Incidentally, it s also the year that brought us the first and notoriously panned film adaptation of the game, as pictured above.) One of those kids was played by John Francis Daley, who went on to become a screenwriter with partner Jonathan Goldstein on movies like Horrible Bosses and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and they also co-directed 2015 s Vacation and last year s Game Night. Paramount Pictures is reportedly now in talks with Daley and Goldstein to direct the long-in-development reboot of Dungeons Dragons, which moved to Paramount in 2017 after Warner Bros. was unable to get a reboot starring Ansel Elgort going earlier this decade. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were also formerly attached to direct DC Comics The Flash.4. CHRIS PINE TO STAR AS ANCHORMAN WALTER CRONKITE IN NEWSFLASH (Photo by Warner Bros.)Very few people are ever likely to confuse comic actor Seth Rogen with Star Trek star Chris Pine, but thanks to the wonders of makeup, they now have the same role in common. Until recently, Rogen was in talks to star in the historical drama Newsflash as CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite as he was covering the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. The news this week, however, is that the role will instead go to the aforementioned Chris Pine. If Pine signs on, he will be joining Mark Ruffalo, who has long been attached to star as producer Don Hewitt, who went on to found 60 Minutes in 1968. Chris Pine s next big movie will be Wonder Woman 1984, which comes out next summer (6/5/2020).5. JASON MOMOA OUT FOR REVENGE IN NETFLIX S SWEET GIRL (Photo by Warner Bros.)Before his blockbuster success last year with Aquaman, Jason Momoa starred in the Netflix series Frontier from 2016 to 2018. While he is signed to return for the Aquaman sequel, that movie isn t scheduled until December 16, 2022, so he s got plenty of time before it starts filming. With that in mind, Momoa has signed on to appear in a revenge thriller for Netflix called Sweet Girl. He will also produce Sweet Girl, in which he will play a husband who vows to bring justice to the people responsible for his wife’s death while also protecting his daughter. Momoa will also co-star in next year s Dune remake (11/20/2020) as Duncan Idaho.6. JARED LETO JOINS DENZEL WASHINGTON AND RAMI MALEK IN LITTLE THINGS (Photo by Netflix)After playing The Joker in the first Suicide Squad movie, Jared Leto will soon become the latest actor to star in a Marvel movie (by way of Sony) as the living vampire, Morbius, in just under a year (7/31/2020). This week, Leto also started early talks with Warner Bros. to join their crime thriller Little Things. If he signs on, he will play a serial killer who s crimes are being investigated by a small town sheriff played by Denzel Washington and another detective from Los Angeles played by Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody). Little Things will be directed and written by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, The Founder, Saving Mr. Banks), whose most recent film was Netflix s The Highwaymen.7. BEN AFFLECK IS IN DEEP WATER WITH HIS NEW EROTIC THRILLER(Photo by Universal Pictures)In the ten years or so between 1983 and 1993, director Adrian Lyne gave the world a few major hits (Flashdance, Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal), but then two stumbles (Unfaithful and his Lolita remake) seemed to put his career as a director on a 17-year hold. That said, Lyne is finally preparing to return with another erotic thriller called Deep Water that seems to share a lot of themes with his earlier films. Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas ( Joi in Blade Runner 2049) are both in talks to star in Deep Water as a married couple who spice up their relationship by allowing each other to take other lovers, until their mind games take a dark turn when people around them start turning up dead. Just last week, Affleck also joined his old friend Matt Damon in a historical drama called The Last Duel. 8. REESE WITHERSPOON S FIRST SCIENCE FICTION DRAMA WILL BE PYROS(Photo by Bob Mahoney/©Warner Bros.)Like most movie actors of her status, Reese Witherspoon has appeared in movies from a wide range of different genres, including psychological horror (American Psycho), supernatural comedy (Little Nicky), and animated science fiction (Monsters vs Aliens). This week, we found out that the latest genre Witherspoon will expand into will be (live action) science fiction with a movie called Pyros. Witherspoon is partnering with frequent X-Men producer Simon Kinberg on the new film, in which she will star as one of a group of augmented people who are fitted with indestructible fire suits that are fused to their spines [who] work for a corporation that recovers objects for wealthy people when their houses are burning. 9. MARK WAHLBERG GOING TO THE DOG(S) WITH ARTHUR THE KING (Photo by Patti Perret/Paramount Pictures)Although there still aren t that many movies about (live action) cats, their canine counterparts don t have that problem, as almost every year sees at least one movie centered on dogs, with the most recent example being A Dog s Journey (Rotten at 49%) and The Art of Racing in the Rain set to hit theaters next week. The latest star to sign on for a doggie picture is Mark Wahlberg, who is now attached to star in Arthur the King, an adaptation of the novel Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home, based on a true story. Wahlberg will play a Swedish adventure racer named Mikael Lindnord who won the hearts of millions when he and his team adopted Arthur, a badly wounded but big-hearted stray dog who tagged along with them during an epic endurance race in Ecuador.
