Movie theaters are reopening in New York City — some of them anyway. And to 25% capacity. Vaccination levels are exceeding estimations from January and now we have been told that vaccines will be available for every American by the end of May. Normalcy is seemingly coming and people can sense it, especially those at the movie studios who continue to make schedule moves. The waters are being tested. After the numbers posted by Tom Jerry last week does the performance of Raya and the Last Dragon tell us anything more? Well, yes. And no.King of the Crop: Raya s .6 Million Opening Might Be A Sign Of Hope – And Not Quite As Soft As It Seems(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture)Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon is yet another test of the theatrical/streaming model. Back in September the studio tried Mulan on for size with its Premier Access pricing on Disney+. The result was not nearly as lucrative as they had hoped and it surely has been a factor in the way they have weathered the storm with the release of Black Widow, still scheduled for May 7 in theaters.Mulan only played overseas in theaters and the response to the film was mixed in general (it s Certified Fresh on the Tomatometer but has a Rotten Audience Score of 49%). So we did not have quite the same measuring stick of a day-and-date release with streaming on top of theatrical. That changed with the Warner Bros./HBO MAX deal and began with Wonder Woman 1984 over Christmas weekend. That film opened to .7 million over the holiday with COVID spikes still raging and an option to sit at home comfortably with a HBO MAX subscription for the cost of less than a single ticket price in some markets. That film went on to gross million to date (with another 7 million internationally) and is the third-highest grossing film U.S. theaters have had since last March.(Photo by Warner Bros.)The same studio’s delayed Tenet grossed .9 million and The Croods: A New Age has grossed over .6 million and most of that actually came after it hit VOD on its 24th day of release. It grossed .02 million in theaters up to that point. Flash-forward to last weekend – the first non-holiday weekend since March 13-15, 2020, to post an overall gross of over million, and just the third overall, when Tom Jerry opened to .1 million. That was the second-best opening of that timespan to Wonder Woman 1984’s .7 million. (Tenet’s .2 million also included previews from Tuesday and Wednesday of earlier that week.) That means despite the availability of the HBO MAX option, folks still opted to give those films the best openings of the pandemic era. This brings us to the latest family offering from Disney.Disney – and, frankly, the whole industry – would have loved to have seen a million opening for Raya and the Last Dragon. Even just a few million above Tom Jerry would have sufficed – something to show that, as vaccinations increase and major markets begin to open again, the numbers are headed in the right direction. An .6 million start is not what anyone had hoped. After all, a premium price tag at home is double what a month’s subscription to HBO MAX costs and Tom Jerry opened around 70% higher just a week earlier. (Par for the course, Disney has not released any figures on Raya’s streaming performance.) Sure, Tom Jerry is an established property over the new world-building of Raya, which also opened in 400 fewer theaters, partially thanks to Disney unable to come to terms with bookings at Cinemark, but can it still be spun as a positive?(Photo by Warner Bros.)Another way to look at it is simply within the numbers produced by a similar theater output. Tom Jerry opened in 2,475 theaters with a ,701 per-theater-average. Here are the best openings for films opening between 2,400-2,500 theaters from 2010-2020: Into the Woods (.05 million), Tyler Perry s A Madea Family Funeral (.06), All Eyez On Me (.43), Heaven is For Real (.50), Legion (.50), Death at a Funeral (.21), The Crazies (.06), Den of Thieves (.20), Tom Jerry (.11), Nobody s Fool (.74).Not bad considering Tom Jerry opened with theaters operating at minimal capacity and none opened in New York City. The animated/live-action hybrid grossed another .6 million this weekend. That’s a 53% drop from its opening. The WB/HBO MAX hybrid releases, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Little Things dropped 67.1% and 55.3%, respectively, in their second weekends, so those numbers are headed in the right direction for WB. Tom Jerry’s total stands at .9 million, just behind The New Mutants’ .8 million gross – the fourth-highest during the pandemic. Now let’s look at Raya and the Last Dragon, which opened in 2,045 theaters with an estimated ,205 per-theater-average, and the films from 2010-2020 that also opened between 2,000-2,100 theaters: Think Like a Man (.63 million), The Best Man Holiday (.10), Tyler Perry s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (.64), Tyler Perry s Acrimony (.17), Jumping the Broom (.21), Super Troopers 2 (.18), Harriet (.67), Annihilation (.07), The Hundred-Foot Journey (.97), Cloud Atlas (.61), Baggage Claim  (.03), The Witch (.80), Raya and the Last Dragon (.6), The Switch (.43), Black and Blue (.37), Wanderlust (.52).It s a little bit further down the list, but again, theaters are mostly working with 25% capacity on the nearly one-year anniversary of the worst pandemic in 100 years. Raya and the Last Dragon is only the fifth film to open in over 1,000 theaters during this time to post a per-theater-average over ,000. In normal times that would be a disaster. Now, it’s a hopeful sign that we have had that happen two weeks in a row. That’s where we are. In a week-by-week game now seeking the signs that normalcy is coming and each week shall be judged accordingly.Lesser Returns: Chaos Walking and Boogie Fail to Pull People From Their Homes(Photo by © Lionsgate)Family films and wannabe blockbusters are the only films garnering moviegoer’s interest enough right now to get them to leave the house. Chaos Walking may have once believed itself to be the latter, but it was not to be. In a glass-half-full way of thinking, .8 million is the fourth best opening of 2021 behind Tom Jerry, Raya and the Last Dragon, and The Little Things (.7 million), but that s with a 0 million price tag and no streaming profits to think of yet. The basketball drama, Boogie, had the sixth best opening of the year behind those four films and Liam Neeson’s The Marksman (.1 million), starting with just .2 million. On these Dates In Box Office History (Photo by @ Universal)March 5: Two years ago, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World grossed .6 million on this day to cross the 0 million mark on its 12th day of release. A big record was broken in 2010 when Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland posted the highest Friday opening ever in the month of March with a .8 million start. That bested the three-year record of Zack Snyder’s 300, which opened to .1 million. Alice lost the record two years later to The Hunger Games and currently ranks fifth behind that, Batman v Superman, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, and Captain Marvel.March 6: The only major milestone crossed on this day also occurred in 2010 when The Blind Side grossed 6,218 on day 107 of its release to cross the 0 million line. Sandra Bullock had won the Oscar for her performance just one week earlier.March 7: In 2017, The Lego Batman Movie made 0,416 to pass 0 million at the box office on its 26th day. It was also the day that Alice In Wonderland became the first film ever in March to gross over 0 million in its opening weekend. Its 6.1 million remains the fifth best opening ever in this month. What Should Have Been: A Different Tom Holland Sci-F Epic And More PranksRaya and the Last Dragon was originally supposed to open over the Thanksgiving holiday last year on November 25. Originally, we were supposed to get the fourth entry in the Jackass film series and a different Tom Holland science-fiction epic in Uncharted. Jackass 4 is now slated to arrive on September 3 and the video game adaptation is now charted for February 11, 2022.Full List of Box Office Results: March 5-7,

The first season of HBO’s road trip horror-fantasy, Lovecraft Country, is a hit with fans and critics, already coming in Certified Fresh. The show blends the terrifying monsters of H.P. Lovecraft’s universe with the horrors of racism in segregated 1950s America. Expanding on those themes, this week s Binge Guide includes more classic literary monsters, the unknown terrors of traveling, and much more.Recommended: The Best HBO Series RankedRecommended: The Best HBO Max Shows to Stream Now英雄战魂骑士加点SPOTLIGHT PICK!Palme d Or-winner Parasite has now crossed over  million at the domestic box office and over 0 million at the worldwide box office. Adding just over 300 screens last week, the film added another .5 million and cemented itself as a solid hit for indie distributor Neon. Expanding to more screens this weekend, Bong Joon-ho s latest feature looks to keep the buzz going for what many are calling the best film of 2019. The story follows a low-income family as they try to hustle their way to a better life through their association with an affluent family, and it takes several hilarious twists and turns en route to its dramatic conclusion. (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Shakespeare gave us to be or not to be, Puzo and Coppola gave us an offer we couldn t refuse, and the three writers of Venom – yes, three people are credited for this screenplay – gave us rolling down the street like a turd in the wind. Your thoughts on that now-iconic, symbiote-issued simile likely mirror your reaction to the film in which it s spoken. Did you, like so many critics, declare Eddie Brock s solo debut a poorly scripted and misguided mess? Or did you, like so many fans, bow down giddily to your new head-biting Marvel master, thankful for a superhero movie that stood out from the pack by being weird as hell, dark AF, and letting Tom Hardy do all of that?In the world of Tomatometer-Audience Score divides, director Ruben Fleischer s Venom gives us a canyon like few others, with just 30% of critics declaring it Fresh compared with 81% of the Audience. But you don t need us to tell you the film is beloved: The movie made a whopping 6 million at the global box office and fans are hotly anticipated the Andy Serkis-directed sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, due out next year. Watch: Kevin Feige on the making of The Avengers above. In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige details the creation of one of the MCU s most iconic moments.VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLThe Movie: Marvel's the Avengers (2012) 91%When Marvel Studios kicked off the MCU with Iron Man, success was not a guarantee. Audiences didn’t know the character, and Robert Downey Jr. was not the superstar he is today. And yet lightning struck. It would strike again and again for the studio, but never as spectacularly – at least until the past two years – as it did in 2012’s The Avengers, the mega successful Marvel superhero team-up written and directed by Buffy creator Joss Whedon. Audiences got to see characters they had started to love (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow) unite with a new version of the Hulk/Bruce Banner as well as a guy with an arrow, to square off against Loki, god of mischief, brother of Thor, and man on a Tesseract mission. The film was in many ways as much of a gamble as Iron Man: Disney and Marvel Studios spent a reported 0 million on it, and the filmmakers had the challenge of balancing multiple storylines, generating real chemistry between multiple A-listers, and meeting colossal expectations. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says his own expectations were exceeded.(Photo by Zade Rosenthal, © Walt Disney/courtesy Everett Collection)“The big danger of the first Avengers was just getting overwhelmed with action.” Early on we realized that the role of the filmmaker on our films is to bring a tonality — Jon Favreau, amazing job! — [to] bring a unique tonality and be able to maintain and ride that tone over the course of production and through post production. To bring the characters to life, to make them realistic, grounded. And that we have amazing artists and technicians who can help with the scale, that can help with as big a canvas as it is. What the filmmakers need to do is not get lost in all of that and to focus on the great character work. And the big danger of the first Avengers was just getting overwhelmed with action. So many superheroes, so much spectacle, so many special effects. And we knew there would be plenty of that. But the most intere

King of the Crop: Jumanji Destroys the Competition(Photo by Sony Pictures)Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opened on a Wednesday, five days after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and in its first five days, it grossed .77 million. Jumanji: The Next Level took just three days to make million, way ahead of its ultra-conservative estimates of just million. That may only be the 13th best start for a film in the month of December, but if it follows suit with the other films like it, The Next Level should pass 0 million with no issue. Sony has a much higher number in mind, given that Jungle had the second-best December multiple of all time (after Avatar) when it earned 11.18 times its opening Fri-Sun weekend, amounting to over 0 million domestic. Another 7 million internationally gave the film enough (2 million) to place among the Top 50 grossing films ever; a spot it is likely to relinquish soon after The Rise of Skywalker opens. Can The Next Level reach the 0 million level? Only 12 other films to have started in December (including the limited release of American Sniper, which broke through in January) have done it. Four are Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films, three are Star Wars, two are from James Cameron, and the others are Aquaman and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Budgeted at 5 million, The Next Level’s global total currently stands at 3 million and will have no problem turning a profit for Sony.Rotten Returns: Richard Jewell and Black Christmas Fail to Make an Impact‘Tis the season not to release films about terrorist bombings and serial killers. It is hard to say whether or not the accompanying controversy over the portrayal of a journalist in Richard Jewell really kept people away, but a Clint Eastwood film without a big star at its center (like Tom Hanks, Bradley Cooper or… Clint Eastwood) is normally not a big draw. The last Eastwood film without any of those faces in front of the camera to gross over million was 2003’s Mystic River. But the last of his films to open as weak as Jewell ( million) was, ironically, True Crime, back in 1999. Eastwood the actor only drew a .27 million opening for that February release, which went on to gross just .64 million. His Best Picture nominee, Letters from Iwo Jima, made just .75 million. Jewell may still find itself grossing over million, but it will rank as one of the lowest-grossing wide releases of his career and one of the bigger losers, given its million budget. Then there is Black Christmas, the second remake of Bob Clark’s first great Christmas film from 1974. The 2006 remake opened to just .72 million and finished with .27 million. The 2019 version did not do much better, with a .4 million start after what turned out to be an against-the-odds projection of -12 million. Horror has not been a popular genre to release in December, and the numbers show why. Going all the way back to 1981, only three horror films have opened to more than million in December (Scream 2, Krampus, and the 1998 remake of Psycho) and only four horror films have grossed over million (Scream, Scream 2, Krampus, and Dracula 2000.) In Blumhouse fashion, the budget for Black Christmas was only million, so it is not some major financial disaster, but if it fails to reach the million benchmark set by the 2006 remake (Rotten at 14%), that has to stand as a big disappointment. The Top 10 and Beyond: Frozen II Hangs on, Uncut Gems and Bombshell Are Solid in Limited TheatersThe champion of the past three weeks fell to second place, as Frozen II missed becoming the 45th film to gross more than million in its fourth weekend of wide release, though its .18 million raised its tally to 6.54 million, which is the 19th best ever after 24 days. That s about million higher than The Hunger Games: Catching Fire had back in 2013, when it was the original Frozen’s November partner in grossing 0 million. Frozen II’s fourth weekend is also around million more so we should expect no less than 0 million domestic in its pocket by the end of its run. Most importantly, though, Frozen II has become Disney’s 6th film this year to cross the billion-dollar mark which makes it the 38th highest-grossing film ever, and it will ultimately join the Top 25. The original Frozen currently ranks 15th, with .274 billion. Frozen II is only 2 million behind right now. Then we have two films making their runs toward 0 million. Ford v Ferrari is nearly there after another .14 million this weekend. Its total stands at .2 million domestic, but it is the 5 million global tally that lingers for Fox, as that is still around million behind where it needs to be to recoup its costs. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out is already into profit for Lionsgate and is now just trying to leg it out to the milestone. With .8 million so far, the murder mystery is hitching a ride on the numbers that Creed had at this point, within a million behind of both it’s 19-day tally and its third weekend. Creed finished with 9 million. That is a number that Ferrari is also headed towards and even with Knives a few million behind its pace it looks like it should still cross the finish line and may even pass Ferrari worldwide as it currently has 2 million.Benny and Josh Safdie’s Uncut Gems (92%) with Adam Sandler had a stellar showing in just five theaters grossing 5,498. While that is the second best per-theater-average of the year (5,099) behind just Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (8,072 in each of three theaters), it is the fourth-best ever for a film released in five theaters. Only La La Land (1,104), The Master (6,311), and Brokeback Mountain (7,425) opened better. Gems also just missed a personal best PTA for A24, passing such notable titles as Lady Bird (,109) and this year’s The Farewell (,916), but was just behind Moonlight (0,519) as the all-time champion. We will see if the estimates come out higher on Monday. The studio’s ,000+ PTAs have all grossed at least .3 million. The Safdies last film, Good Time with Robert Pattinson, grossed a total of .02 million. The list of four-theater openings is a little steeper, but Jay Roach’s Bombshell nevertheless had a solid showing this weekend. With 2,000 the Fox News sexual harassment expose became the 15th best opening within that group ahead. Among the top 15 films in that group, 11 of them were nominated for Best Picture (with The Farewell TBD) including the aforementioned American Sniper (the all-time champ with 3,667) and Moonlight, which went on to win the Oscar, as did Birdman (4,397).Terrence Malick’s latest, A Hidden Life, had a less than great showing with just ,000 in five theaters. That comes between his last two narrative releases, Song to Song (,559 / Rotten at 43%) and Knight of Cups (,551 / Rotten at 47%), which were only in four theaters initially. A Hidden Life’s PTA (,400) is the director’s third lowest since his return to cinema in 1998 with The Thin Red Line and could be second lowest if the estimates fall. This has to be cited as a big disappointment for Fox Searchlight, who released the three-hour film featuring his first positive score with critics (78%) since The Tree of Life in 2011.This Time Last Year: Spider-Verse Swings into First Place(Photo by Sony Pictures Animation)The Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature first took the #1 spot at the box office this weekend. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened to .36 million, doubling the take by Clint Eastwood’s The Mule, which began with .50 million. In turn, Eastwood’s film more than doubled the start of Mortal Engines (.55 million) which ultimately barely doubled its opening weekend to become one of the biggest bombs of 2018. Both Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Ralph Breaks the Internet passed 0 million, and Creed II got over 0 million. James Wan’s Aquaman earned .9 million in special previews and that was good enough to grab the tenth slot on the list. Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk opened to 4,476 in four theaters, which amounted to the eighth best per-theater-average of the year. The Top Ten films grossed 1.64 million and averaged 67% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top Ten grossed an estimated 2.24 Million and averaged 76.7% with critics. On the Vine: Jumanji Is Back, Along with a Slew of Awards Hopefuls(Photo by © Lucasfilm)The week fans both young and old have been waiting decades for is finally here: The big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats arrives to storm the box office with its blend of live-action FX wizardry and angel-like lyrics. All kidding aside, while that all remains to be seen, it is also the week that the Skywalker Saga comes to an end. For years, fans all over the world have been anticipating the conclusion of the nine-film arc that George Lucas hinted at so many years ago. And now Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Episode IX of the series, arrives and will undoubtedly be one of the biggest hits of 2019 and ultimately give Disney its 7th billion-dollar film of the year and push their grosses to over billion. The Full Top 10: December 13-15Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) 71% – .1 million (.1 million total)Frozen II (2019) 78% – .18 million (6.54 million total)Knives Out (2019) 97% – .25 million (.91 million total)Richard Jewell (2019) 77% –  million ( million total)Black Christmas (2019) 39% – .42 million (.42 million total)Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92% – .14 million (.12 million total)Queen & Slim (2019) 83% – .6 million (.17 million total)A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% – .35 million (.32 million total)Dark Waters (2019) 89% – (.89 million total)21 Bridges (2019) 54% – .19 million (.36 million total)

And going by the first wave of reviews of the latest installment, F9, there are more critics in favor of the property’s further push into ludicrous speed, especially with franchise favorite Justin Lin returning to direct the sequel. There are a few disappointing elements even for the die-hards, though, including the addition of John Cena to the Fast Furious family. But if you’re in the mood for more over-the-top action mixed with a silly, soapy scenario, you’ll be happy to take another ride with Vin Diesel and crew. Here’s what critics are saying about F9:How does F9 compare to the other Fast Furious films?Possibly the fastest and most furious yet.  Germain Lussier, io9.comF9 takes The Fast and the Furious to the next level.  Fred Topel, Showbiz Cheat SheetThis is, by FAR, the biggest, wildest, gravity-defying-iest Fast Furious installment yet.  David Ehrlich, IndieWireF9 returns to the heights of Lin s best Fast Furious franchise films, combining big heart and bigger action while deepening its themes of family.  Molly Freeman, Screen RantEven by the standards of a Fast Furious movie, F9 crams a dizzying amount of stuff into its 149-minute run time, and it tears through them at such head-spinning velocity that the dizziness becomes part of the pleasure.  Angie Han, MashableA return to form for the series. At least up there with 6 if not close to touching the bombastic grandeur of Five.  Kyle Anderson, NerdistIt’s far from a nadir for the brand, but sits comfortably in the bottom five when ranking the films. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThis latest installment suffers from the inevitable diminishing returns inherent when a franchise constantly tries to top itself.  Tim Grierson, Screen International(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)How does it feel to have Justin Lin back in the driver s seat?F9 sees Lin return after two movies away, and I have to say, it’s really good to have him back. Kyle Anderson, NerdistAfter the empty soullessness of Fate of the Furious and the ribald nonsense of Hobbs and Shaw, F9 feels like Lin is pulling the franchise back on track. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmOnce again, Lin gets the job done not by slamming on the brakes, but rather by speeding things up to such a ridiculous extreme that the velocity starts to hold everything in place. David Ehrlich, IndieWireInstantly you know this film is in the hands of people who get this world. Germain Lussier, io9.comHow is the plot?F9 further pushes The Fast Saga into the realm of unapologetic soap opera, complete with long-lost siblings and ridiculously convoluted resurrections. Scott Mendelson, ForbesIt s simply the vehicle (pun intended) that loosely ties the various action scenes together. Molly Freeman, Screen RantI missed an exchange that explained a key plot point about what the main gizmo, that can destroy the world, even does and I didn’t care. It doesn’t matter. Mike Ryan, UproxxA good portion of the plot, scripted by Daniel Casey, feels cribbed from Furious 7 with some slight alterations  It’s rarely a good sign when a franchise needs to go the route of digging up mysterious/long-lost relatives as tired plot devices. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendToo much of what happens in F9 feels stuck in the past. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyLumbering along like a vehicle in need of a tune-up… with an A-to-B plot that’s as laughably lazy as it is simplistic. Jordan Raup, The Film StageThe jolly inventiveness of the action scenes only underlines how painfully corny the drama is by comparison. Tim Grierson, Screen InternationalRyan FujitaniWhat about the action? The effects and stunt teams all deserve gold stars. Alonso Duralde, The WrapA lot of the road stunts do look quite real, where I assume a lot of actual stunt work was done, as opposed to Dom fighting a CGI submarine. Mike Ryan, UproxxI appreciated a return to more primal car chases this time out after the over-the-top madness of Furious 6 (a tank!) and Furious 8 (a submarine!). Scott Mendelson, ForbesIt’s pretty damn enjoyable to watch a car swing around on a cable off of a cliff. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThere’s a fair share of wit on display as well, in particular during a couple of set pieces which make giddy good use of high-powered magnets. Tim Grierson, Screen InternationalOne scene toward the end [is] guaranteed to make your jaw drop at the gloriously brain-dead chutzpah of it all. David Ehrlich, IndieWireWhile the ideas in F9 s big third-act action scene are bigger than any other Fast Furious movie, the sequence itself doesn t feel quite as epic as past films. Molly Freeman, Screen RantThe movie also has a lot of hand-to-hand combat — too much of it, I would say — that happens aboard speeding vehicles. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyComes across as borrowed, not only from past iterations but other action films as well, with two separate Christopher Nolan set pieces coming to mind. Jordan Raup, The Film Stage(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Do they really go to space? If seeing two wise-cracking dudes in bright yellow scuba suits rocketing into outer space in a Pontiac Fiero doesn’t sound the least bit appealing, then you’re probably not a fan of the Fast Furious franchise. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIt lives up to the hype and then some. Germain Lussier, io9.comWould you believe me if I said that aspect is one of the lesser ridiculous things to take place in this film? Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentReally, the less said about that, the better. Suffice it to say that the car jumping from skyscraper to skyscraper to skyscraper in Furious 7 was a lot more fun. John DeFore, Hollywood ReporterYou might smile at the lunkheadedness of the whole enterprise — that is, if you’re feeling generous. Joshua Rothkopf, Empire MagazineDoes F9 ever go too far over the top? This is a movie that sling-shots so far past self-parody that it loops all the way back to something real. David Ehrlich, IndieWireF9 reaches heights of absurdity that break through into the transcendent. Angie Han, MashableThe most ludicrous and unwieldy of the films so far. It transcends parody… I might go so far as to say F9 is a comedy. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmPerhaps what’s most fascinating is the deeper intelligence mixed into the ridiculousness. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAs long as these movies keep their earnest, fun, ’90s action movie tone, there is no ridiculous plot point these movies could come up with I wouldn’t believe. Mike Ryan, UproxxFor a series with a main character who routinely urges his buddies to trust in math and physics because Numbers Don’t Lie, Fast really insults any viewer who feels the same way. John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Do the women get enough of the action? The women do get some of the better moments in the movie. Rodriguez is still quite a badass after 20 years, and even Dom’s sister, played by Jordana Brewster, gets more into the action than we’ve ever seen before. Edward Douglas, Below the LineWatching Michelle Rodriguez drive over landmines faster than they can explode beneath her motorcycle feels like snorting nitrous straight from the tank after a year of being forced to pretend that movies are even remotely the same at home. David Ehrlich, IndieWireThere s a positively delightful sequence that finally gets Helen Mirren s Queenie Shaw in the driver s seat of a chase scene. Molly Freeman, Screen RantThis is a movie about men and brothers and men and fathers and men and cars, and sisters can just jump to the back of the line, apparently. Alonso Duralde, The WrapHow is the addition of John Cena to the franchise? If there’s a piece that doesn’t fit, it’s Cena… As the brooding, bitter baby brother, he’s a glowering wet blanket, and no fun whatsoever. Alonso Duralde, The WrapA disappointing use of John Cena, who has to put a lid on all of his charisma so that he can seem like a relative of Vin Diesel’s. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendThe charm Cena showed in Blockers and Trainwreck does not blip on the radar here, lest it interfere with Diesel’s signature, leaden acting style. John DeFore, Hollywood ReporterThe chemistry between Cena and Diesel is so non-existent that it’s almost impossible to buy into the central emotional (if that’s what you can call it) thrust of the movie. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)What about the reappearance of Sung Kang s Han?Even in his brief scenes (Lin lovingly reintroduces the character in the coolest way possible), Kang reminds us of why Han was an instant fan-favorite — radiating charisma and likability. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmThe script hardly does him justice (Sung Kang is still the coolest, and manages to survive the human plot device he’s forced to bring with him). David Ehrlich, IndieWireWhile Sung Kang makes the most of his limited time onscreen (my audience cheered practically every time he appeared), it s hard not to expect more after all this time. Angie Han, MashableBringing Han back to life works as pure fan service, but it also undercuts the emotional impact of his passing. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendSad to say but if all of Han’s story was cut, F9 would probably have been a more compact, tighter, faster-paced movie. Germain Lussier, io9.comIs there a lot of fan service? It has moments fans have always wanted to see, moments we never thought we’d see, action to spare, and dives deeper emotionally than any other installment. Germain Lussier, io9.comA lot of the movie feels crowdsourced, and that’s fine in a way. Give the fans what they want, and they’re the ones who demanded Letty be alive. Fred Topel, Showbiz Cheat SheetSome of this fan service ends up feeling forced, as does one action sequence that satisfies a desire many Fast And Furious aficionados have long harbored about where the sequels might go. Tim Grierson, Screen International(Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Does the franchise seem to be on the right path? There’s still plenty of gas in the tank of this franchise. Germain Lussier, io9.comThere’s assuredly plenty of gas left in the tank. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionFor the first time in a long time it feels like it’s drifting in the right direction. David Ehrlich, IndieWireFast Furious 9 feels like a rejuvenation. Joshua Rothkopf, Empire MagazineAs fast and furious as F9 races along, it can’t quite outrun the impression that these films are losing some of their freshness. Tim Grierson, Screen InternationalThe series no longer has any dramatic stakes and no longer even pretends to adhere to the consequences of its onscreen stories. Scott Mendelson, ForbesThis humdrum antepenultimate adventure leaves one convinced those steering the series don’t have a firm grasp on where it’s heading. Jordan Raup, The Film StageI’m not 100% sure that even the most diehard fans will want much more of the Fast Saga with everything thrown at them in this one. Edward Douglas, Below the LineFast and Furious is clearly running on fumes and in desperate need of a pit stop, if not a full overhaul. 英雄战魂骑士加点 When Dear White People season 3 hit Netflix this summer, the comedy continued its streak as one of the best-reviewed shows on television. Season 3 – for which creator Justin Simien brought his dynamic cast of students back to Winchester University for junior year – is currently rated Fresh at 89% on the Tomatometer.  Still packed with biting social commentary, the storylines this year broke new ground for the characters and the narrative format.Rotten Tomatoes spoke with star Logan Browning, who plays the bombastic and outspoken Samantha, who after two seasons hosting her campus radio show Dear White People, leaves her beloved show and host identity behind in the latest season. Below, the actress discusses what she s watching on TV right now, what she and Issa Rae get up to during their epic yacht parties, and season 3 of Dear White People.WHAT IS APPOINTMENT TV FOR YOU?(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)The most recent thing that I got to appointment watch was Big Little Lies, and I did that with my friend Camille because it came on every Sunday and I have HBO NOW. That s the most recent thing I was able to watch every time it came on.Rotten Tomatoes: How do you make time to watch it together? We are very considerate of each other s time. We would check in on every Saturday and be like, Hey are you busy on Sunday? Do you want to wait to watch it on Monday? And then we d always alternate whose house we re going to so no one s having to constantly host and no one s having to constantly make the trek to the other person s place. And then, of course, we d order food and we don t start it until we have our food, which gets to be a problem sometimes because it just gets later and later when you re waiting for your Postmates or Uber Eats delivery. And then, we try really, really hard not to pause it. We ll look at each other at certain moments throughout the whole thing like, Are we on the same page here? I ve tried multiple times to pause it and talk to Camille about it and she s like, No, we have to just keep going. Yes, we have to power through and we will discuss it after just like a movie. That s what it requires.WHAT’S ON YOUR DVR?Well, I m one of those people who does not have cable. I only have streaming. I have Hulu Live, but the way my life works, I never get to use it. I wouldn t know what to DVR if I had one.WHAT’S IN YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by Netflix)I m in the middle of bingeing Queer Eye. I like to mix my fiction and my feel-good reality shows. I m also in the middle of Stranger Things. I will start Fleabag soon, though, because I have heard so many great things about it.WHAT’S COMING SOON THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR?(Photo by HBO)Oh, that s easy. Insecure season 3. That is whenever they release it — in like 2040! [laughs] I feel it s never going to be here, but I can t wait.RT: Didn t you and Issa Rae just throw a yacht party together? Did you ask her about it? I didn t. But I should have brought that up. Where s my season three, sis? We mad, Issa. We mad! [laughs] No, I know, she s busy making movies. She can live.(Photo by Netflix)Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Coming into season 3, it s the students junior year and they re more mature than last season. Everybody s growing up and growing out in different ways. Talk about the maturity of this season.I think that the characters have to grow. That s a lot of what college is about: finding yourself, your voice, and just figuring out how the world wants you to behave, versus how you react to the world, versus how you want to create your own narrative for the rest of your next couple of years. All of the characters have core issues that they ll always probably deal with. I know Justin has said this before, As a writer, you want to create problems for your characters and then never solve them, and I find that fascinating because in every season we just get closer to solving these problems. But ultimately, the things in our lives that we feel are our problems are really a part of something. That s our shadow self, right? It s a part of you that will always be with you. You just learn how to work around it, with it, and through it. That s kind of what all these characters are doing. They have things in their lives that they come up against and they ve just got to figure out how to work through it. The tagline of the season is: Grow by any means necessary.RT: Samantha s in a different place this time.  Talk to me about coming back to Sam without Dear White People as her thing. It s funny. Sam was always experiencing the retaliation of the radio show at her mic. That s gone this year and it s difficult for Sam. Because in the long run she hopes this will be a vacation, and that whenever she s got her life together she can come back to it. But in the end, she s like, I don t know if I m ready to really jump back into this. And when you get to that moment, you have to decide, is this thing that I ve created staying the same or is it going to change? That also happened with the show Dear White People too. Justin, Yvette [Lee Bowser, showrunner], all of the cast and crew have together created this series and now this season has been all about change. So now it s like, Well, what happens next? Do you just keep running with that? Do you create something new? In a lot of ways Sam s exploration this season parallels the show s.RT: Justin tackled two big issues within the black community this year: The Tyler Perry effect, in which a person may be thought to perpetuate stereotypes in the eyes of some, but in others estimation is an icon who fights for representation. The other issue being #MeToo through the eyes of black women. What was it like exploring those two storylines?I very much appreciated both of the storylines. I mean, with the Tyler Perry reference, as someone who worked for the man himself and grew up in Atlanta going to Tyler Perry plays and films, I m honestly grateful that Justin got to this point in his life where he can realize that there s room for all of us. I appreciate it because as a Black person in America, we are all so different and we all get to consume whatever content we want. A lot of the reason I was able to be in L.A. during the writers strike or when I wasn t working was because of the work I did with Tyler. And with the #MeToo storyline from every angle, everyone was super supportive. There are a lot of instances in and women s lives — and in men s lives — that they don t talk about because they re not sure if it was taboo or if they just unknowingly put themselves in an improper situation. What [Dear White People] shows is that opening up to people and having people not judge you when you are sharing those kinds of things with them allows for support, or it should. I feel that on so many levels.(Photo by Netflix)RT: Dear White People has been consistently rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes but some still take issue with the title. What would you say to those that still cannot seem to get past the name? Ultimately, what makes this show so great is that it exists. It s art that dares to exist. This kind of art couldn t and didn t always exist on any platform. To the people who can t get past something like the title? They truly don t bother me. Because if you can t get past it, then you re not ready for it. And that s OK because the show isn t about that. The show s not trying to force anyone to do anything. The show will always exist. Maybe in 30 years it won t exist on Netflix, but it will be in the canon of television and maybe one day people will be ready for it — even if they aren t now. But for the people who are ready for it and who ve been craving it, they deserve to have it. They also deserve to have it in peace, but you know America.Dear White People seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix.
