In 1995, Paul W.S. Anderson introduced himself to the world with Mortal Kombat, an action flick about three fighters preventing the apocalypse by entering a magical martial arts tournament. The film came on the heels of the 30-year-old director/movie lover s debut film Shopping (also the feature debut of Jude Law), and his fresh style, his ability to stretch a budget, and his love for the Mortal Kombat video game helped secure his spot in the director s chair. It was a high-profile gig that many directors had turned down, as the stench of Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon still filled the air in Hollywood.Instead of being scared away, Anderson plugged his nose and jumped headlong into the million-budgeted production, adapting a video game beloved for its bloody, graphic violence into a PG-13 family-friendly movie. Guided by longtime producer Larry Kassanoff and fueled by geeky enthusiasm, Anderson hired a diverse cast and crew of excellent martial artists who understood the film’s cheeky tone and focused on giving Mortal Kombat fans what they wanted — lots of fights. When it was released during the waning days of summer on August 18th, it pulled off a nearly flawless victory, overcoming the 1990s video game adaptation curse commercially, at least and claiming the number one spot at the U.S. box office with an impressive million opening weekend. Critics were split at 47% on the Tomatometer, but audiences loved the electronic soundtrack, creative fight scenes, and diverse cast of committed actors who sacrificed multiple bruised ribs to bless us with some excellent brawls. The film remained number one at the box office for three weekends and finished with a stellar 2 million worldwide haul.To celebrate Mortal Kombat’s 25th anniversary, we look back and break down five reasons why it serves as the perfect exemplar of Paul W.S. Anderson s career.HE WORKS WITH DIVERSE, INCLUSIVE CASTS(Photo by R.E. Aaron/©New Line Cinema)Assessments of Anderson s career are full of backhanded compliments and hyperbolic criticisms, and they never bother to discuss his 25-year history of casting diverse groups of actors and his willingness to think outside the box. It feels strange to compliment someone for doing what’s right, but in 2020, it’s still rare to see such inclusive casts. It took the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe a full decade to unleash Black Panther and Captain Marvel while they built their brand with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange. Compare that to Anderson, who, in 1995, dared to cast Robin Shou as the savior of the world in Mortal Kombat and, in 1997’s Event Horizon, gave Laurence Fishburne some all-timer dialogue (“We’re leaving”) as the captain who fights back against a spaceship from hell. In 2005, AVP Alien vs. Predator saw Sanaa Lathan become an honorary Yautja hunter, or Predator, after she kills a Xenomorph and helps rid the world of a justifiably pissed off Alien Queen. In fact, before Jordan Peele’s Us opened with million dollars, it was AVP that held the record for the highest opening weekend for a movie led by a black woman. That’s an impressive accomplishment, and when talking about her character Alexa Woods, Lathan said, “In 1979, Alien came out and Sigourney (Weaver) was in it with a bunch of guys, and nobody at that time expected the woman to be the hero, so that was a tradition that Alien started. When Paul did this, I think he had it in mind, and he auditioned all races, to set this apart and yet still carry on that tradition, which is great, because it s a woman and you would never expect a black woman to be the hero.”(Photo by Coco Van Oppens/©Screen Gems, Paramount Pictures, ©New Line Cinema)Of course, Anderson is most famous for his collaborations with Milla Jovovich, who he helped solidify into an action icon. The two first teamed up for the 2002 sleeper hit Resident Evil, which led to an 18-year collaboration (and an ongoing 11-year marriage) that saw the six Resident Evil movies collectively grossing over billion worldwide. If you ve listened to the Blu-ray commentaries and read various interviews, it’s clear Jovovich and Anderson have worked closely during their collaborations, and their teamwork has created some all-time movie moments (yeah, we said it). In an interview with Thrillist, Anderson said he had to fight to cast Jovovich over a male star because she was “a strong female lead back in the day when that was absolutely not acceptable in mainstream Hollywood movies.” Within the Resident Evil franchise, Alice has saved the world, wiped out gigantic creatures, and joined forces with Ali Larter, Oded Fehr, Li Bingbing, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, and Boris Kodjoe.Anderson’s adherence to female-fronted action franchises and diverse casting are evident again in his upcoming 2021 film Monster Hunter, another video game adaptation that features Jovovich and international action superstar Tony Jaa. As a fan of Ong-Bak and Triple Threat, it s thrilling to see Jaa on the poster of a major international release.Listen, it’s a shame that a director hiring a diverse cast is rare enough that we applaud it when it happens, but one look at the history of Hollywood reveals why Paul W.S. Anderson stands out in that respect.HE KNOWS HOW TO STAGE UNIQUE FIGHT SCENESDo yourself a favor and rewatch the nearly 10-minute final fight between Liu Kang (Robin Shou) and Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). It showcases the actor s martial arts skills, and the scene isn’t edited into oblivion as they trade up to 12 strikes before a cut. Shou helped choreograph the fight, and he worked with stunt icons Pat E. Johnson (The Karate Kid, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), J.J. Perry (Warrior, Captain America: Civil War, Haywire), and Jeff Imada (They Live, The Bourne Ultimatum) to create some iconic battles throughout the film. It’s clear that Anderson learned a lot on the set of Mortal Kombat, as he and his various production designers over the years have built sets around the fight choreography to make them unique. In AVP, Soldier, Resident Evil: Afterlife, and The Three Musketeers, the fight scenes blend seamlessly into the surrounding environments in fantastic action set-pieces. Watch this corridor fight in Resident Evil: Retribution and you’ll see Anderson, Jovovich, and the stunt crew in perfect sync as they execute an expertly staged brawl that looks beautiful in 3D.(Photo by Rafy/©Screen Gems courtesy Everett Collection)Another highlight occurs in Resident Evil: Afterlife. The bathroom fight between Alice (Jovovich), Claire Redfield (Larter), and the executioner, a hulking monstrosity who loves body piercings and wields a massive axe, is an ambitious spectacle. Shot with a Phantom Camera and James Cameron’s Avatar 3D rig, the battle makes the most of its setting, as it erupts into a shower of exploding porcelain, tile, and broken pipes. Does it rely a little heavily on the slow-mo? Sure, but setup is simple, the action is economical, the result is satisfying, and we even get a wall flip and a superhero landing. Part of what makes it work is that Larter and Jovovich did most of their stunts, which only adds an extra layer of badassery. When Anderson doesn’t have the luxury of a Robin Shou, Jason Statham, or Milla Jovovich to bust heads, he has no problem getting creative. While filming Mortal Kombat, Anderson was fully aware that Goro, the four-armed behemoth from the video games, could barely move, as the beautiful looking 10-foot tall animatronic created by the legendary Tom Woodruff Jr. (who worked with Anderson again in AVP) was basically a glorified lawn ornament. Knowing the fight scene would be cumbersome and ineffective if played seriously, he had Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) hit Goro with a low blow (the close-up of his bulging eyes is admittedly cheesy), kick him into a pit, and throw in an Easter Egg for fun. When life hands you a beautiful animatronic lemon, have some fun with it and make some fan-service lemonade.HE MAKES EFFICIENT USE OF SMART PRODUCTION DESIGN AND PRACTICAL EFFECTS(Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)In 1995, Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times wrote that, as impressive as the special effects are at every turn, even more crucial is Jonathan Carlson s superb, imaginative production design, which combines Thailand exteriors with vast sets that recall the barbaric grandeur of exotic old movie palaces and campy Maria Montez epics.” Very early on in Anderson’s career, he realized that inspired production design and practical effects could make movies look much more expensive than their budgets. In his relatively lower-budget films like Mortal Kombat ( million), Resident Evil ( million), and Death Race ( million), it helped to utilize exotic exterior shots and settings to help limit the number of extras, locations, and set builds. There’s a moment in the 2008 film Death Race when a massive big rig called The Dreadnought smashes into a spiked barricade and explodes. In an interview with Grantland, Anderson explained, “We crashed that truck for real, and it was an awesome thing to shoot, because it’s 10 tons of steel flying, traveling really fast, hitting a dead stop, and flying through the air.” It’s one of the best examples of Anderson making the most of his budget. He and producer Jeremy Bolt realized early on that their million budget wouldn t allow them to shoot around the world, so they settled on industrial areas in Montreal to stand in for the film s island, where the prison races take place. With the money they saved, production designer Paul Austerberry (who also worked with Anderson on The Three Musketeers and Pompeii and would go on to win an Oscar for his work on Guillermo del Toro s The Shape of Water) and stunt coordinator Andy Gill (Bad Boys II, Pearl Harbor) focused on procuring real cars, generating real explosions and, of course, obliterating an 18-wheel Dreadnought. Anderson was also able to bring in some A-list talent, like Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane, and three-time Academy Award nominee Joan Allen, who classed up the production.Anderson’s most beautiful creation comes in the 1997 horror spectacle Event Horizon. The haunted house in space -themed film focuses on a search and rescue team who fall prey to a ship that has returned from a Hell-like dimension with a malevolent spirit on board. The massive gravity drive at the ship s core was built by production designer Joseph Bennett on the cavernous James Bond stage in England’s Pinewood Studios, and it actually worked (the part that spun on cue, that is; not the part that opened a wormhole to Hell). Emboldened by a gigantic million budget, Anderson cherry-picked elements from the best of the genre, peppering in visual references to films like Solaris, Alien, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film is arguably most famous for its images of torture and depravity, which Anderson conceived after researching the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch and Pieter Bruegal. But he understood the importance of showing only just enough, and the few frames of mayhem we do get in the film have inspired a sort of cult fascination among horror hounds. These scenes feature grotesque, Clive Barker-inspired practical makeup; hit pause at the right moment, and you ll see the gnarly, bloody gags the special effects department clearly spent a lot of time to create. The film s practical effects and massive sets still hold up to this day, and it s one of the reasons we agree when Laurence Fishburne s Captain Miller says, “I will take the Lewis and Clark to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the Event Horizon until I m satisfied she s vaporized. F this ship!”HIS FILMS ARE LARGELY CRITIC-PROOF (Photo by R.E. Aaron/©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)The 47% Tomatometer score for Mortal Kombat is the highest of Anderson’s 11 theatrically released films since 1995; none of his movies even comes close to Fresh. Writers frequently offer only the faintest of praise for his body of work, and begrudgingly at that, as they use terms like “unusual genius” or say that  there are a few, ahem, gems lying around his filmography. Nobody seems willing to admit that the laser scene in Resident Evil is meant to be funny, or that “Grid” the Xenomorph from Alien vs. Predator might be the deadliest alien in the franchise. The narrative has been set since 1995, and the reviews now write themselves, despite the fact the critics might have failed Anderson, at least according to some. But even though the average Tomatometer score for his 11 theatrically released movies is a super Rotten 27%, there are still plenty of Fresh moments in his filmography. Even his lowest-rated film, the curious Blade Runner-sidequel Soldier (12% on the Tomatometer), features a jacked-up Kurt Russell battling Jason Scott Lee in a thrilling final fight that s so intense you almost feel the exhaustion by the end of it. Anderson also isn t without his defenders; James Cameron loves Resident Evil, Quentin Tarantino included The Three Musketeers on his Best of 2011 list, and prolific film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky considers Anderson to be the “world’s least pretentious auteur who makes lively, unpretentious mid-budget genre movies fixated on video-gamey cool and distinguished by their leanness and their inventive — and sometimes even poetic — use of space.”The success of Mortal Kombat wasn’t a fluke because Anderson and his talented crew knew what they were making, and they made it earnestly. Ashby, who contributed to the script in addition to playing Johnny Cage, said, We didn’t write Hamlet or anything, but we had fun with it. That playfulness is all over the movie, and it s still refreshing today.INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCES LOVE HIS MOVIES(Photo by R.E. Aaron/©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)In 1995, Mortal Kombat brought in 2 million at the worldwide box office. Most importantly, it made million (42%) of that sum overseas. The million domestic haul was impressive for the scrappy video game adaptation, but the 100+ million distinction is what gave it major credibility. This trend of solid global returns has become a staple for Anderson, who has realized for a long time that focusing on worldwide returns and thinking globally will keep him working well into the future. In 2017, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter “rocked” China with a .4 million debut, which is remarkable considering China doesn’t allow ghosts and the supernatural to be shown on screen (with some exceptions). After its worldwide theatrical run had ended, box office receipts showed that it made 91% of its money overseas, with 5 million of its 2 million worldwide haul made outside the United States. This topped the 82% of Resident Evil: Retribution and the 80% of Resident Evil: Afterlife, which also set records internationally. In other words, the Resident Evil movies were global event films; in Japan, The Final Chapter made almost as much money as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was released just a week earlier. Closer to home, 2014 s Pompeii managed to become the highest-grossing Canadian production of the year, despite less than explosive box office returns here in the U.S., and it became the fourth film directed by Anderson to win the Golden Screen Award.Paul W.S. Anderson on the set of Mortal Kombat (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)Paul W.S. Anderson has been thrilling audiences around the world for 25 years, and it all began with a silly, action-packed video game adaptation that blossomed into a nostalgic fan favorite. Since then, Anderson has consistently worked with diverse casts and talented craftsmen on limited budgets to produce eye-popping, undemanding entertainment, and his filmography is littered with sleeper cult classics like Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator, the Resident Evil franchise, and yes, Mortal Kombat. In most interviews, he seems comfortable with his career, and he should be; he knows what his fans want, and he delivers, even if he s not a critical darling. It may not be a flawless victory, but for a lot of folks, it s good enough.Mortal Kombat was released on August 18, 1995. Scandal, streaming, and a continuing plethora of reboots and revivals — some of the most memorable events in TV land in 2019 involved several of those things. Here, to help get viewers excited about the year ahead, we take a month-by-month look back at TV and streaming s recent past.JANUARY#METOO MAKES WAVESWith Julie Chen having left her job as a co-host of The Talk on CBS (after husband Les Moonves was bounced out of his job as chairman at the network following a #MeToo-related investigation), Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba became a new Talk co-host … In other #MeToo TV news, Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of StarTalk on National Geographic Channel, saw his show put on hiatus while the cable network investigated sexual harassment claims against him. In 1925, a group of tenacious young women set off a pro-labor lawsuit that had national implications, and Radium Girls gives that story the big-screen treatment. The American Radium Factory employed a group of young women to paint the dials of watches with glow-in-the-dark paint that contained radium, unaware of the dangers of working so directly with the element. Before the side-effects were known to the public, the girls would dip and lick brushes containing the toxic substance, causing catastrophic physical effects and eventual death. The Radium Girls,  as they were dubbed, did fight back, however, and sued their employer, who they suspected knew about the deadly effects long before any of them started getting sick. Joey King and Abby Quinn star as sisters in the based-on-true-events historical drama that Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter says  fulfills a vital function with its dramatization of an important chapter in America s history of labor reform. (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)In the short term, Black Widow is set to appear in her own feature film within the next few years. And just about every line between Nat and Clint (Jeremy Renner) in Endgame suggests Hawkeye will be along for that ride. Consequently, our early guess that the film will be a prequel focusing on her recruitment by S.H.I.E.L.D. seems more and more likely. Unless, in some bizarre twist, it will also feature Clint trying to rescue her from her fate. As it will be a Phase 4 film, it has to tie to something in the present-day story. Nat’s Endgame death makes Black Widow all the more exciting because we now have this question: how does it fit into the post-Infinity Saga tapestry?Similarly, the continued end states for Vision and Loki would seemingly impact their upcoming Disney+ limited series. Will they be set in the Infinity Saga era or define new places for them in Phase 4? Considering Elizabeth Olsen’s recent tease that WandaVision will see the characters in a “1950s” setting, it is easy to image the program will take its cue from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta s phenomenal 2017 Vision series and see Wanda (Olsen) recreate the android for an anachronistic, domestic life. But considering that series ends with all of Vision s dreams broken or on fire, we imagine Wanda’s dream life will end in similar flames.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Loki, on the other hand, presents a more interesting case. While the MCU version we met in the first Thor picture is still dead, the one who escaped with the Tesseract in the middle of Endgame is presumably out in the wild and is the one we will see in the forthcoming Loki series, which is reportedly set to feature the the God of Mischief creating trouble across history. This version of the character is still a villain lacking the emotional growth of the character we saw in Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War. If he does prove to be the focus of the limited series, it will certainly be more interesting. And considering audiences forgive him for a lot of heinous acts, the program could even attempt to test their gracious attitudes toward the charming trickster. And while not a death, we imagine Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) ultimate Endgame state will precipitate a title change for Disney+ s Falcon and the Winter Solider to something more succinct, like Captain America.Oh, and Tony? Let’s just assume we’ll see him again in 2028 for the 20th Anniversary Marvel Studios film, resurrected to counter whatever threat the collective heroes are facing in that moment.Time Is Immutable, Except When It Isn’t: Time Travel Just Changed EverythingWith all its joking criticism of Back to the Future, Endgame seemingly sides with the notion that time is an immutable series of events, and changes to the past will create a new timeline while the time-traveler causing those changes returns to their original, unchanged present.OK, yeah, that’s confusing. To simplify: Loki’s Endgame escape does not change Thor’s experiences with him in Thor: The Dark World, Ragnarok, or Infinity War because time cannot be altered. The escaped Loki in Endgame is part of one of those tangent realities the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) warned Hulk about. This is why Tony could unmake the Thanos from 2014 without erasing the events of Guardians of the Galaxy or any of the subsequent films. All of it still happened. This is also why Nebula could shoot her past self without it affecting her present-day form.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)If you can wrap your head around the notion of an unchangeable past, Endgame s rules about time travel are simple enough. Certainly simpler than the temporal mechanics of film and television series like The Terminator, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, or even various X-Men stories across comics, television, and film. And then we get to Endgame’s closing moments, with an aged Steve Rogers, who clearly took the slow path back to his friends after dropping off the Infinity Stones in their original places in time. If time is immutable, then he gets to live his life with Peggy (Hayley Atwell) without altering the timeline. Like Loki, he creates another tangent reality. But his very appearance to hand off his shield and identity to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) means the timeline is not as secure as Hulk, Tony, or even the Ancient One assumed it to be. Unless, of course, he found a way to use Loki s Tesseract (in combination with the Time Stone) to cross timelines. But it seems more likely that Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was right all along and the rules from Back to the Future are in play (it s no accident the team breaks all of them across the plot of Endgame). Back in Marvel Comics, time travel only ever delays the inevitable. The dark reality from “Days of Future Past” always threatens to reappear in the X-Men s future while Cable’s many attempts to prevent Apocalypse’s reign some centuries from now only leads to some other character taking the External’s place in that grim future. But in almost all cases, time travel does indeed alter the timeline.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The older Steve’s presence in Endgame indicates that time in the MCU is also malleable. To borrow a line from The Flash, the timeline can be changed and that may prove to be as big of a threat as the Infinity Stones themselves – especially as all you need is some Pym Particles and a little know-how to invade the past and alter history. And even if time is solid, those tangent realities the Ancient One feared could pose some threat in Phase 4.No Stinger Scenes? Like, Forever? Now this one was a big shock for anyone who was ready for just a little bit more MCU after 183 minutes: Endgame features no mid-credit or post-credit stinger scenes, a first for a Marvel Studios picture. Considering the stinger scene’s proliferation across other studios, it is possible Marvel will drop them entirely from here on out. It would be a bold move and make all our Phase 4 speculations wilder, because Marvel would not be teasing the Next Big Thing as soon as its current release ends. Imagine an Ant-Man without that Captain America: Civil War moment or Thor: Ragnarok without the cut to Thanos’s massive ship. And even without the Next Big Thing to tease, post-credit stingers offer a nice final thought – like the shawarma scene at the end of Marvel’s Avengers or Captain America’s speech about patience after the Spider-Man: Homecoming’s credits. In some ways, it’s fitting, then, that Spider-Man: Far From Home will answer this meta-cliffhanger. If it features a stinger, then we know the practice is here to stay in Phase 4. And, presumably, that stinger will itself be the first few moments of that new phase.Avengers: Endgame is in theaters everywhere (but you already knew that)
It s worth noting that Angel of Darkness, while technically a sequel to the first season, works as its own standalone story. Brühl s Dr. Kreizler reunites with his rag-tag investigative cohorts Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), now running her own detective agency, and New York Times journalist John Moore (Luke Evans) as they work to solve a string of baby murders amid a backdrop of political and cultural turmoil. The themes of women s rights, police brutality, and racism create a conflicted, yet timely, story here.Ahead of the show s return, Rotten Tomatoes spoke with Brühl about how his character has evolved since the series premiere, whether the show s disturbing subject matter gives him nightmares, how the themes explored in The Alienist: Angel of Darkness are relevant today, and if the COVID-19 shutdown delayed his work on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.(Photo by TNT)Aaron Pruner for Rotten Tomatoes: This season focuses a lot on Sara Howard, while Kreizler is cultivating his own relationships. Has Kreizler, as a character, changed in how you interpret him since you first took on the role?Daniel Brühl: Knowing about Sara s psychological skills, Laszlo Kreizler is eventually willing to share power and to give in and to let Sarah Howard be in charge of that new mystery and of that new case. He becomes, emotionally, a more open-minded man thanks to the friendship with Sara and John and eventually even finds a kindred spirit, someone who he finds very fascinating. It s so interesting because my wife is an alienist in real life. And she told me that many times the most brilliant psychologists you know, become very nervous when they have to deal with, you know, their own introspection and their own inner life. So they may be brilliant in, you know, analyzing their environment, and yet, they have problems in expressing what they are going through. The theme of child murder continues in season 2. Is it tough to separate yourself from the dark subject matter of the show?Brühl: It didn t affect me that much when we were shooting the actual show, but watching it now gives me nightmares. I m the father of a little boy and expecting my second baby to arrive soon. The fact that this show this time around deals more with motherhood and fatherhood, respectively, felt more universal. It was also interesting to realize how engaged my wife was when she watched the show. She said that it resonated more with her than the first season.(Photo by Nelly Kiss/TNT)This is a period piece, yet the issues explored in the series continue to feel quite timely — women s rights, sensationalism in the news, police corruption, income inequality, and racism. What message are you hoping viewers will take away from watching?Brühl: It is very sad to see how long it takes for mankind to really make a change. It s funny how history goes in waves. I wouldn t say that it always goes in the wrong direction. Sometimes we advance, sometimes we evolve, and then, sometimes we go three steps back. So it is sadly fascinating to see that a story set in 1897 and a book written about that period that was published in the 1990s still feels so current. And what the story tells us is that it always takes a couple of courageous liberal modern minds to make a change. Unfortunately, mankind needs to have the worst things happen in order to move on. So the eruption that, fortunately, we witness these days internationally, due to the things that happened in the U.S., gives me a bit of optimism, because that avalanche, that eruption, and that message that racism has to stop, is being heard loudly and clearly at the moment. I hope that, finally, we will change and, hopefully, carry on doing so. We always have to hope that we will learn something from history.

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering stories from the last few weeks (because of the holidays) for titles such as Final Destination, Ghostbusters 3, Disney s Hunchback, and Monopoly. This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM CRUISE S MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 COMING IN 2021 AND 2022(Photo by Chiabella James/Paramount Pictures)There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of those examples, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). This week we learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for releases in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. Paramount is aiming to achieve this goal by hiring writer/director Christopher McQuarrie to work on both sequels, following what he s done on the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%) and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to schedule not just Tom Cruise, but his supporting cast, which may include Fallout co-stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. We don t have any indication what Mission: Impossible 7 (2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (2022) might be about, but they will probably feature Tom Cruise doing some of his own crazy stunts. Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020), and he will also be celebrating his 60th birthday on July 3, 2022, possibly around the same time that Mission: Impossible 8 will be released.Fresh Developments1. AN ACTUAL GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS NOW FAST-TRACKED FOR SUMMER, 2020 (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)We ve been seeing year-after-year of reboots and remakes, but only very rarely are they overturned by later films. If you were a big fan of 2016 s Ghostbusters (Certified Fresh at 74%), we have some bad news for you, as Sony is now pulling an about-face. Rather than moving forward with a sequel starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony is aiming to produce a Ghostbusters 3 that will extend the continuity that started with the 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Ghostbusters 3 will be a legacy sequel, with Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) taking over from his father Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters 3 will reportedly feature the teenage kids of the original Ghostbusters, possibly comprised of two daughters and two sons. We even already got a teaser trailer this week for the sequel, which is aiming for a summer 2020 release. In related news, Bill Murray is now signed to reunite with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks, co-starring Rashida Jones.2. BLACK PANTHER S NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN KING GETTING A SEQUEL: COMING TO AMERICA 2The 1988 blockbuster comedy hit Coming to America was #3 at the box office that year, preceding by three decades the success of another African king in last year s Black Panther. We already know Black Panther is getting a sequel, but now we can count on one for the former as well. Eddie Murphy is signed to return as Akeem Joffer of Zamunda for Coming to America 2, which will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle Flow, Black Snake Moan). Murphy and Brewer are coming off their recent collaboration on Netflix s upcoming Rudy Ray Moore biopic, Dolemite is My Name.3. HUNCHBACK (OF NOTRE DAME) GETTING LIVE-ACTION TREATMENTThere are absolutely no signs of Walt Disney Pictures slowing down their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films anytime soon (setting aside whether The Lion King is live action ). In addition to all of the films in development, the next five on Disney s upcoming slate are Dumbo (3/29/2019), Aladdin (5/24/2019), The Lion King (7/19/2019), Mulan (3/27/2020), and Maleficent II (5/29/2020). We can now add Hunchback, an adaptation of 1996 s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to the mix, as Josh Gad is now producing the remake for Disney. (Gad is a frequent Disney star, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen 2.) Gad is not currently expected to star, but that could change with time. Meanwhile, another project, Pinocchio apparently hit a snag over the holidays, with Paddington 2 director Paul King recently walking away (while Guillermo del Toro s Pinocchio is now in development at Netflix).4. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME TRAILER REVEALS MYSTERIO AND THE ELEMENTALS (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)An all-too-common complaint about trailers is that they reveal too much, with the best ones arguably just whetting our appetite without giving away the whole narrative. This summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) has a very thin line to walk indeed, as its mere existence could be a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019). Let s focus instead on what this trailer actually does show, which is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio fighting mysterious monsters called The Elementals. In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be acting as a superhero, but many fans were quick to point out that in his first appearance in 1964, Mysterio similarly pretended to be heroic, as he s traditionally one of Spider-Man s longest-running super villains. (Let s note here that 1964 is some 40 years before Syndrome did something similar in 2004 s The Incredibles.) As for the Elementals, three different Easter Eggs in the trailer seem to suggest that they could actually be Spider-Man s villains Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Sandman (or those could be fakeouts too).5. STEVEN SPIELBERG FINDS HIS WEST SIDE STORY REMAKE S MARIA, ANITA, BERNARDO, AND CHINO Steven Spielberg is getting closer to filming his remake of West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony, with the original film s Rita Moreno also cast in a supporting role. What we didn t know until this week, however, was who would be playing the film s female lead, Maria (played by Natalie Wood in 1961), or her best friend Anita (Moreno s original role). Those big reveals came this week as we learned that Maria will be played by 17-year-old Colombian-American newcomer Rachel Zegler. (You can watch Rachel Zegler performing various songs on her YouTube channel right here.) Anita will be played by Ariana DeBose, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for playing Donna Summer. Anita s boyfriend Bernardo will be played by David Alvarez (Tony winner for Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Maria s would-be-fiancee Chino will be played by Andrés Rivera (of the Hamilton national touring company). Spielberg also reportedly met recently with faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico about their concerns of how their community will be portrayed in this West Side Story update.6. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL LEAD THE WITCHES REMAKE Robert Zemeckis recent adaptation of the documentary Marwencol, called Welcome to Marwen (Rotten at 31%), was both critically panned and a box office bomb. For his next film, Zemeckis is aiming for a more conventionally popular project, with a remake of 1990 s The Witches, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl s 1983 children s novel. Anne Hathaway is now attached to star in The Witches as the Grand High Witch, the role played in 1990 by Anjelica Huston. The 1990 movie was itself a box office bomb, earning just million, but the film has arguably become a family favorite in the 29 years since. Robert Zemeckis new adaptation of Dahl s novel will be set in the Gothic South in the 1960s, with Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) also writing and producing along with both Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity).Rotten Ideas3. KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY  (Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart may not be hosting this year s Academy Awards, but his career is otherwise moving along quite nicely following the million opening weekend for The Upside. Within a few days of those numbers being confirmed, Kevin Hart was quickly attached to two different films, including one that s pretty high profile. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds like a drastic switch. Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board. If we disregard his two Kevin Hart concert movies, Tim Story currently has a seven-movie Rotten streak going that includes Fantastic Four (27%), the aforementioned Ride Along (19%), and Ride Along 2 (13%). Kevin Hart s second new project this week is called Fatherhood, based on the Matthew Logelin memoir Two Kisses for Maddy. Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers) will direct the tragic drama, in which Hart will play a newly single father after his high school sweetheart dies in childbirth.2. VIDEO GAME MOVIES STILL ROTTEN, HOLLYWOOD STILL MAKING MOVIES LIKE JUST DANCE (Photo by Alessio Bolzoni/Amazon Studios)We frequently talk about how bad video game-based movies have been over the years; there isn t a single Fresh film among the 47-plus that have been made. That may change this year with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but even if one of them does earn a Fresh score, it would only be a small dent in the genre s infamous reputation. In the grand Hollywood tradition of doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, we learned about another attempt to bring a video game to the big screen this week, namely the long-running Just Dance franchise. Screen Gems won an auction to the Just Dance rights after competitive bidding. In related news, Warner Bros long-in-development Minecraft movie attracted a new director this week in Peter Sollett, who directed Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist (Certified Fresh at 74%) and 2015 s Freeheld (Rotten at 48%).1. FINAL DESTINATION FRANCHISE BEING BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD (Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)The first Final Destination movie in 2000 earned just a 34% on the Tomatometer, but it inspired a franchise with four more sequels, only one of which scored above 48%. It can be argued that Final Destination, in which the survivors of lethal events are then haunted by death, trying to even the score, was somewhat ahead of its time, given the more recent success of franchises like Insidious and IT. The screenwriting team of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who worked on Saw IV, Saw V, and Saw VI, have now landed a new gig at New Line Cinema, working on rebooting the Final Destination franchise. Those Saw movies, likewise, have pretty Rotten Tomatometers (18%, 13%, and 39%).

(Photo by Showtime)Video game adaptations are tough. For years, feature film takes on beloved games like Super Mario Bros. and FarCry have been the butt of jokes thanks to producers who take the title and little else from the source material. Even more recent, high-gloss, and faithful efforts seem to lose something in the translation. (See our guide to 47 Video Game Movies Ranked Worst to Best. )But Paramount+ hopes to buck that tragic big-budget trend with a high-end series based on Microsoft’s epic game franchise Halo. As Showtime Networks co-president Gary Levine put it at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour, “Our challenge on this series was to take a video game and make it into a character drama that belongs on Showtime.” Two years later, Showtime’s corporate parent, ViacomCBS, announced the series would instead be one that belongs on its rebranded Paramount+ streaming service.Navigating the landscape from game mechanics to filmed entertainment is often as difficult as any mission series main character Master Chief confronts, but here are the details we know so far about the Paramount+ Halo series.[Updated on 2/24/21]1. It Is Based Upon a Huge Game Universe(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Beginning with 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, the Halo series charts the ongoing conflict between a spacefaring humanity in the 26th century and an alien theocracy known as the Covenant. In that first game, Master Chief John-117, a genetically enhanced Spartan supersoldier encased in advanced armor, faces off against the Covenant for control of a Halo — a ring-shaped space station/super weapon created by an ancient and extinct race the Covenant worship as gods. The game changed the perception of first-person shooters on home consoles and gave Microsoft its first huge win in that market when the game was released as a launch title for the original XBox.Sequels followed — five so far in the main series with a sixth, Halo Infinite, due out in 2021 (we hope) — and a surprising number of spin-offs. New characters appeared to play off against the stoic Master Chief and the spin-offs further developed the Halo universe by featuring more story-driven first-person shooters or switching to other game mechanics like Real Time Strategy. Books, comics, and animated series further deepened the breadth of the franchise s universe and history. The television series will attempt to “weave deeply drawn personal stories with action and adventure set within that richly imagined vision of the future.” Anchoring those stories will be Master Chief, played by American Gods’ Pablo Schreiber (pictured). In a 2019 interview, Levine told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters that Schreiber has “the physicality to be a Spartan, to be Master Chief. But he is [also] a great dramatic actor.” A mention of Schreiber’s comedic chops and the “twinkle in his eye” suggests Master Chief may be seen without his helmet or armor; a first for Halo should it happen. Although Levine added, “we’re not violating anything big,” so Master Chief may remain within his armor throughout the series.2. Steven Spielberg Is Involved (Sort Of)(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Since 2013, Spielberg’s Amblin Television has been involved in developing the current iteration of the Halo TV project. At that time, he was said to be on board as an executive producer, but it seems he will not take on any direct creative duties. Nonetheless, there is always the potential he will take an interest in the series, particularly as it focuses on two of his favorite topics: war and aliens.Microsoft’s 343 Industries — an entity it established to manage the Halo brand following the departure of original developer Bungie — will also produce the series, suggesting a level of direct developer control seen only with Ubisoft producing 2016 s Assassin’s Creed. That film, however, proved developer input may not lead to a great adaptation as that film only garnered a 19% on the Tomatometer and an audience score of 43%.3. Its Cast Reflects Halo’s Past And Future(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Joining Master Chief on this television journey will be Yerin Ha as Quan Ah, a new character devised specifically for the series. First announced alongside Schreiber, the character is described as a “shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both.” The series will also feature Californication’s Natascha McElhone (pictured), Fargo’s Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy.McElhone will play Dr. Catherine Halsey, inventor of the Spartan super-soldiers and Cortana, the advance AI who is the key to humanity’s survival and a constant element in Master Chief’s adventures. Cortana is also the name of Microsoft’s AI assistant on its platforms; the name was, in fact, derived from Halo. At one point, McElhone was set to voice Cortana, but scheduling issues led to the character s original voice, Jen Taylor, stepping in and creating one bit of continuity with the games.Woodbine will take on the role of Soren-066, another established Halo character. He is an old friend of Master Chief’s and a privateer in conflict with the military — which means he may come into direct conflict with Azmi’s character, Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of Naval Intelligence and another character from the games who seemingly places the Halo TV series in a specific part of the franchise’s history. But, as Levine said, “you re going to get new information in our series, but we are not going to violate any of the things in the canon.”Kalu, Culzac, and Kennedy all play new characters to the Halo universe with familiar affiliations. Kalu is Spartan Vannak-134, Master Chief’s de facto deputy. Culzac is Spartan Riz-028, a “cybernetically enhanced killing machine,” and Kennedy is Spartan Kai-125, another Spartan super-soldier tasked to the mission. Actors Yerin Ha, Charlie Murphy, Olive Gray, and Danny Sapani are also part of the series in unspecified roles.”4. It Has Great Talent in the Writers’ RoomExploring the “richly imagined universe” is executive producer and showrunner Kyle Killen, creator of critically acclaimed Lone Star (83% on the Tomatometer) and the fan-favorite NBC series Awake (89% Audience Score). Both series featured protagonist who faced dual realities — literally in the case of Awake’s Micheal Britten (Jason Isaacs). Both shows also faced tough competition on broadcast television and did not last beyond their initial episode orders; nonetheless, a 10-episode cable series may turn out to be the best format for Killen as a writer and producer. And should Halo s protagonist find themselves caught between two worlds — say humanity versus the culture of The Covenant — Killen will be a great fit for the material. The Last Ship’s Steven Kane also serves as showrunner alongside Killen. His TNT series has an 83% on the Tomatometer and proved to be success on that network over the course of five seasons. Kane reportedly oversees production in Budapest while Killen supervises writing and other stateside production efforts. Also, the initial episodes will be directed by Robin Hood’s Otto Bathurst, who replaced Rupert Wyatt due to scheduling conflicts.“[He] is a marvelous director,” Levine said of Bathurst. “Unbelievably passionate about the project, and he has been leading our team beautifully.”5. This Is Not the First Attempt Adapt Halo(Photo by Vanguard Cinema)Halo nearly became a feature film in the early part of the 21st century. In 2005, 20th Century Fox and Universal picked up the project thanks in part to a script written by Annhilation’s Alex Garland. According to Garland, the story was a fairly faithful adaptation of the two Halo games available at the time. Peter Jackson was poised to produce with both Guillermo del Toro and Neill Blomkamp eyeing the director’s chair. Sadly, tough negotiations between the studios, Jackson, and producer Peter Schlessel led to the project’s collapse. After to the project’s implosion, Blomkamp said he would have used Master Chief as “the most important supporting cast member” with other characters doing “most of the emotional heavy lifting.”Since the time of the failed feature attempt, Microsoft produced two live-action webseries which were later released as films: Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Nightfall. The latter was produced by Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free and featured Luke Cage’s Mike Colter as Agent Jameson Locke, a playable character in Halo 5: Guardians.6. The Switch to Paramount+Although intended to be a Showtime original series, David Nevins, CBS Chief Creative Officer and Showtime Networks Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, surprised reporters during a February 2021 Investor Day presentation by adding the program to the Paramount+ roster. The streaming service, a rebrand of the existing CBS All Access, intends to encompass more of ViacomCBS’s programming. According to Nevins, Halo fits right in with the sort of content the streaming service intends to highlight. “From all the early glimpses we’ve seen, it’s crystal clear that Halo is a visually stunning thrill-ride, anchored in riveting, character-driven storytelling,” he said. “With such tremendous appeal to every audience, we realized Halo had the potential to become a defining show for what will become the broadest streaming platform at ViacomCBS – the new Paramount+.” Showtime will still be involved as a producer alongside 343 Industries and Amblin.7. What s the Status? Production began in Budapest during the fall of 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to a long delay. It is currently in production again with Paramount+ setting it for an early 2022 debut. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

The records set by Twilight and Star Wars were set on their opening days, so it is unrealistic to expect Endgame to measure up to those. Black Panther’s record Monday was also the President’s Day holiday, so schools were out. Take away the holiday and debuts though, and we’re back to The Force Awakens owning the records for Monday (,109,742) and Wednesday (,022,183). Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen then leads the Thursday charge (,094,472), but that was still just its second day of release. For a true comparison to Endgame we once again look to The Force Awakens, which grossed ,395,725 on day seven.Highest Grossing Three-Hour Film EverCurrent Record Holder: Titanic with 9,363,944A lot has been made recently over the length of Avengers: Endgame. But longer films have long dominated the box office. Among the previous 50 highest-grossing films of all-time, the only non-animated films under two hours are E.T., Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, 2016’s The Jungle Book, and Deadpool. And when you look at those, it s debatable whether one is actually non-animated , Jumanji runs one minute shy of two hours, and E.T. runs just three minutes shy. Deadpool is the shortest at 106 minutes. The following films among the highest-grossing ever are all over two-and-a-half hours:Avatar, Infinity War, Titanic, The Last Jedi, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Lord of the Rings: The Two TowersWith 10 animated films in the Top 50, that means 25% of the all-time live-action films in the group run 150 minutes or longer. The Two Towers runs a minute shy of three hours and is also now one spot shy of the Top 50, thanks to Endgame s weekend box office. The highest-grossing movie with a runtime of three hours or longer is Titanic. Endgame has already also made 53% of Titanic’s all-time gross (including its 3-D and 20th anniversary re-releases). The Marvel movie has made 58.2% of Titanic s initial 1997-98 run. The smart money would be on Endgame knocking Titanic off of its three-hour perch handily.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Fewest Days To Pass James Cameron’s AvatarCurrent Record Holder: Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 20 DaysIt took J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII just 20 days to become the highest-grossing domestic film of all time. On Jan. 6, 2016, Avatar s nearly seven-year record of 0,507,625 fell in less than three weeks. It took 59 days for Avatar to best the record previously held by Cameron’s Titanic. The Force Awakens maintains the all-time domestic record with a total gross of 6,662,225, which it took over 165 days to compile. Can Endgame beat that Avatar figure in fewer days than it took Force Awakens? It depends how it paces, which we get into below.Highest Domestic Gross EverCurrent Record Holder: Star Wars: The Force Awakens with 6,662,225Endgame already has a -plus million head start on The Force Awakens. Infinity War had nearly a million advantage after opening weekend but still fell 7,846,743 shy of Force s domestic record. If Endgame falls off at a similar pace, it could actually still come up just short with around 8 million. The Force Awakens benefited from a series of very respectable drops from week-to-week. Only once in its first 23 weeks did it drop more than 50% and only four times more than 40%.Force Awakens was number 1 for four straight weeks and remained in the top five for eight straight weeks. Does anyone really believe that The Avengers will fall to Detective Pikachu in its third weekend? That leaves it to Aladdin to knock it back over Memorial Day weekend, and it is conceivable it is out of the top five after seven weekends as summer releases like The Secret Life of Pets 2, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Dark Phoenix, and even Rocketman will draw early interest. That head start looms large as Endgame eyes further records, such as the .78 billion that Avatar made globally. The first 20 days for Avengers: Endgame will help tell the tale, but it will be days 21 to 165 that could turn legend into fact.Like this? 最火的电子游戏平台 Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes. [I chose this one] because of Gena, because I watched it when my mind was first opened up to what cinema could be when I was a young actress starting out and discovering the scope of film. Everything that Gena does in this, as well as in A Woman under the Influence, the way that it explores femininity and masculinity and the devastating edges of masculinity, as well as so many colors that a woman can be – her fierceness, her devastation, her heartbreak, her going mad. And then to understand a film could be shot in someone s house, that you could just do this – you could find a way to carve your own path away from prescribed studio roles. So, I chose this for the whole package. And I had the honor of working with Nick [Cassavetes, son of John and Gena] and Gena in a film that Nick directed and I saw that it was a completely different way of working than I had ever been exposed to. The collaboration between all the departments and how we were all… you hear it a lot, “we re like a family,” but in that case, it really was. Everyone was together. The relationship, for example, between me and the set designer was extremely close because Nick wanted it that way. He said, “Well, this is your character. Where would you live? Let s all do this all together.” So that makes for a more relaxed performance and it s just more fun.Opening Night is also important to me because it s about the theater. Those scenes where she s backstage and about to go on, or the scenes in the rehearsal room, but particularly when she s about to go on stage, that visceral thrill and terror, the way he catches it… theater is my heart so it combines a lot of my loves in that film.
