梦幻诛仙哪个职业好采用百度引擎3(Baidu 6)Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies with new roles for Kevin Hart, Angelina Jolie, and Lupita Nyong o.This WEEK S TOP STORYSONIC THE HEDGEHOG TRAILER BACKLASH SPARKS REDESIGN(Photo by Paramount Pictures)Let s start this story off by saying Paramount Pictures should ve seen this one coming. Back in December, the first silhouetted look at their movie version of Sonic the Hedgehog led to a flurry of mostly-not-very-positive social media reactions, mostly about Sonic s legs. Keep in mind that Sonic the Hedgehog is a character that s been depicted in dozens of video games, so there s an established Sonic look. This week, the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer debuted, and the collective fan backlash against Sonic s design was even louder this time. (The eyes are too small, the nose is at the wrong angle, and the teeth. Where to even begin on the teeth?) The Sonic the Hedgehog missteps are only accentuated by the timing of the trailer in the same week as the first Pokemon Detective Pikachu reviews, as that film has not one but dozens of video game characters that look pretty much exactly like they do in the games. The good news, however, is that Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler relatively quickly responded on Twitter, The message is loud and clear you aren t happy with the design you want changes. It s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be. Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled for release on November 8, 2019 (up against Last Christmas, the WWII drama Midway, and The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep).Fresh Developments1. ANGELINA JOLIE TAKES ON THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)If you ve heard about one new movie project for Angelina Jolie lately, it was probably Marvel Studios The Eternals, but that movie doesn t start filming until this September. That leaves a few months for Jolie to work on another project, and it s going to be Those Who Wish Me Dead, the next film from director Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water). Adapted from the novel by Michael Koryta, Those Who Wish Me Dead has a story that s not easily described in just a few words, but we ll just tease that it involves Angelina Jolie working on a forest fire lookout tower and a 14-year-old witness to a brutal murder who s in the woods as part of a witness protection program. Jolie s costars will include Tyler Perry, Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, Netflix s The Punisher) and Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Warm Bodies).2. OSCAR-WINNER OLIVIA COLMAN S THE FAVOURITE FOLLOW-UP (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Fox Searchlight Pictures)Every year, it s interesting to see what new projects the Academy Award winners will be doing next. Olivia Colman s speech as the Best Actress winner for The Favourite was one of this year s highlights, and now we know what s on the horizon for her. Colman and Anthony Hopkins (who won his own Best Actor Academy Award for Silence of the Lambs) are teaming up for a British drama called The Father, based on a play. Hopkins will play a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter (Colman). Olivia Colman will also soon be seen in Netflix s The Crown as the next actress to play the series Queen Elizabeth II after Claire Foy.3. GREEN BOOK DIRECTOR GOING ON THE GREATEST BEER RUN EVER (Photo by Frederic J. Brown/Getty Images)Speaking of follow-ups to this year s Academy Award winners, let s move on to Green Book, which won three of the year s major Oscars: Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and the big prize, Best Picture. Director Peter Farrelly s Tomatometer has more Rotten splotches than Fresh ones, but now he s got a Best Picture to his credit. This week, Farrelly signed on to write and direct an adaptation of the non-fiction book The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A True Story of Friendship Stronger Than War. Like Green Book, this film will be set in the 1960s, as John Chickie Donohue sets off to Vietnam to reunite over some beers with friends who are otherwise pre-occupied with fighting the Vietnam War (yes, really). In related news, one of the Green Book producers confirmed this week that the film s target audience was older white people. 4. LUPITA NYONG O S WACKY OUTER SPACE BEAUTY PAGEANT COMEDY (Photo by Presley Ann/Getty Images)Lupita Nyong o most recently starred in Jordan Peele s Us ( Certified Fresh at 94%), which is still in release and continuing its way up the global box office top 10 for 2019 (it s currently at #8). Nyong o recently wrapped filming of a zombie comedy called Little Monsters (costarring Josh Gad), which will premiere on Hulu, and this week, she signed on for another film from the same writer/director. The science fiction comedy is currently untitled, but it was previously called Miss Universe, and has a log line that compares it to Men in Black meets Miss Congeniality. So, from those two hints, we can probably guess that it somehow involves a beauty pageant of various aliens, including at least one human (unless Lupita s playing one of the aliens). Or maybe we re reading those hints all wrong, and it s about a secret police force that protects us from beauty pageants.5. THE SUICIDE SQUAD CASTING UPDATE: RATCATCHER AND POLKA-DOT MAN (Photo by Ben Rothstein/Marvel Studios)When Disney fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last year (before changing their mind and hiring him back), they left his options open just long enough for Warner Bros. to swoop in and hire him for the soft reboot of The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021). Just based on what we know so far, it s easy to spot the differences between the Rotten 2016 version and what Gunn s planning. We don t know yet who s going to play King Shark (unless he s just a big CGI monster), but this week, two of the other new villains-turned-heroes were cast, and neither are big stars. David Dastmalchian is not yet a household name, but you might recognize him from roles in The Dark Knight, Prisoners, and the Ant-Man movies, and now he s joining The Suicide Squad as the Polka-Dot Man, a supervillain with a costume with super-powered polka dots (yes, really). For Ratcatcher (another fairly obscure villain), Gunn is going with a relative newcomer, Portugal s Daniela Melchior. As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn is expected to direct it after The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), which suggests the earliest we might see it would be sometime in 2022.Rotten Ideas4. KEVIN HART TAKING ON THE EXTREME JOB OF REMAKING A KOREAN COMEDY (Photo by Warner Bros.)Earlier in his film career, Kevin Hart s Tomatometer was mostly dominated by Rotten splats, and to his credit, he s been starting to turn things around lately with films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Certified Fresh at 76%) and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 88%). We re not going to give Kevin Hart the benefit of the doubt just yet (*cough* The Upside *cough*), but we re willing to call this week s news only borderline Rotten. Hart is producing and will probably star in  an English-language remake of the hit South Korean comedy Extreme Job. If he does sign on to star, Hart would be playing a narcotics detective who goes undercover at a fried chicken restaurant to stake out a suspected crime gang, but the stakeout takes a turn when the operation results in unexpected business success. The original version has become South Korea s top-grossing film of all time since its release just a few months ago.3. THIRD FANTASTIC BEASTS DELAYED UNTIL 2021(Photo by Warner Bros.)Warner Bros. might be forgiven for thinking that they had a sure thing with their Fantastic Beasts franchise. Before last year s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald, the Harry Potter franchise s films had always been Certified Fresh and blockbuster box office hits, collectively earning upwards of billion worldwide. That s not to say The Crimes of Grindlewald was exactly a bomb, considering it earned 3 million worldwide, but those results were probably disappointing. Warner Bros. had been planning on releasing each new film every two years in odd years (2016, 2018, 2020, etc), but this week, the studio pushed Fantastic Beasts 3 back a year to November 12, 2021 instead. Warner Bros. executive Toby Emmerich explained the move by saying that they want to give the filmmakers time and space to allow their artistry to truly flourish and deliver the best possible film to our fans. It s not yet known if Johnny Depp will be returning for the third film.2. THIS WEEK IN VIDEO GAME MOVIES: SAINTS ROW(Photo by John Baer/Overture Films courtesy Everett Collection)If the early reviews are any indication, next week s Pokemon Detective Pikachu may finally break the long-standing streak of Rotten Tomatometers for movies based on video games. That would be great and all, but that still leaves dozens of Rotten ones to account for. One director hoping to contribute to an upward trend is F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious), who previously had been trying to get a Kane and Lynch movie going. Gray is now attached to direct a film based on the video game franchise Saints Row, which, over the course of several games, began with the Grand Theft Auto template and took it to increasingly ridiculous settings and themes. How far Gray is willing to go is anybody s guess.1. JENNIFER GARNER HEADING TO FANTASY CAMP WITH I FEEL PRETTY CREATIVES (Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)To her credit, Jennifer Garner continues to find regular work even as the film industry arguably moves further away from the sorts of movies that she s previously been known for. Unfortunately, for her next film, Garner is signing up to work with two screenwriters whose work has never earned a Fresh score; they haven t even scored above 46% since the 1990s. Jennifer Garner is signed to star in Fantasy Camp, a comedy set up at mini-major STXfilms, the company behind the same creative team s most recent film, I Feel Pretty (Rotten at 35%). Garner will play a woman who goes to a reunion at the theater camp of her youth, Camp Footlights, where she will get the chance to challenge her fears, live out her dreams and finally take the stage. The Toronto International Film Festival has already seen the world premieres of several high-profile movies, including the latest from directors Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi, as well as the Tom Hanks-powered Mr. Rogers biopic and Eddie Murphy s return to the big screen. But in between all the buzz for those films, we also got our first look at Hustlers, a based-on-true-events caper starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu, which happens to open everywhere this week, and critics couldn t be more pleasantly surprised. Loosely adapted from a New York Magazine piece published in 2015, the story revolves around a group of enterprising strippers at a New York City club, led by a seasoned vet (Lopez) and her eager protege (Wu), who decide to carry out some financial justice on their wealthy clientele in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Critics say Hustlers is not only a satisfying chronicle of cosmic comeuppance, but also an intelligently crafted satire that s smart enough not to let everyone off the hook, and most agree that Lopez s performance in particular is worth the price of admission.

In our latest episode of Vs. we’re paying tribute to cinema’s greatest scream queens… by making them battle it out to the final reel! (To be fair, something each of them has some practice in.) It’s slasher icon Jamie Lee Curtis against sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver against ghostface killer Neve Campbell against fisherman’s not-friend Sarah Michelle Gellar as we seek to crown horror’s ultimate portrayer of the “final girl.” How will the battle play out? Well, first we’re trapping them in a mansion with about 30 escaped-from-a-mental-hospital serial killers… Oh wait, no, not that, that would be illegal. We’re actually comparing their box office performance, Audience and Tomatometer Scores, and the quality of their enemies, and adding a bonus round for good measure. Will it be Ripley, Laurie, Buffy, or Sidney who lives to earn that sweet sequel paycheck?

Above: Hanton with Hemsworth in a photo from Hanton s Instagram (@bobbydazzler84).What’s the craziest stunt you’ve ever done for a Marvel movie? In Infinity War, I got smacked off my feet by Peter Dinklage s character. I got punted off my feet, somersaulted through the air with a twist, and then landed on a rock face and then headplant into the ground, which was a pretty gnarly hit. What was the toughest MCU movie to shoot?Thor: Ragnarok was intense. The movie is all about Thor, so there were a lot of stunts for Thor and myself and Chris to do in that movie. A month into rehearsal, I snapped my groin I think on that movie I cranked my neck a few times, popped my shoulder out. That’s probably the most I’ve picked up injuries on a Marvel movie, due to the fact that there are a lot more stunts to rehearse, a lot more stunts to do, and a little bit of being unlucky with a couple of landings and tweaks I picked up. That’s the nature of the beast. We spend as much time in rehearsal as possible, breaking it down and making sure it’s as safe as possible before we take the mats out. The stunt team are all working together to make sure it looks great, but it’s repeatable and safe. That’s why we’re on the movie 10-12 weeks prior. I’ve picked up injuries along the way but it’s part of the job. What was the most memorable part of working on Endgame?I think just being surrounded by so many A-list movie stars and so many superheroes all under one roof. The end battle is incredible, all these actors running next to each other and having little fight sequences with each other; Cap getting the hammer, and stuff like that. It was a great ending to a great team and a bunch of professional actors and actresses. What has it been doubling for Thor and working alongside Chris Hemsworth for so long?Chris and I have become very close as friends. We’re the same age, have the same sense of humor. We have a great laugh on set, and Chris is such a great guy. It’s been nearly seven years, so we’ve developed a very close relationship. Without being biased, I think Thor is one of the best characters, so hopefully they do continue [making Thor movies].Glenn Foster: Double for Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) They put the helmet on me, and I suddenly had a flashback to that moment as a kid of seeing Darth Vader helmeted, and I suddenly thought, oh my goodness, this is that moment that I imagined as a kid.' (Photo by Industrial Light & Magic/©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)What was the first Marvel movie you worked on?Iron Man 2.How did you get the job?I was with Robert at that point. We had done Sherlock Holmes prior to that, and he expressed an interest in keeping me with him for whatever journey was in store for us. That was 10 years ago, so it’s kind of been a decade of craziness and an incredible life experience for me. We’ve done maybe seven Marvel films together? And a bunch of other different projects as well.Is there a difference between doubling for Tony Stark and doubling for Iron Man?Iron Man is a lot less quirky and fluid. Robert has a very unique way of moving and acting. Maybe it’s why he was so good as Chaplin. And then, an Iron Man-type movement is much more about being upright, more strident, more powerful. In a way, slightly more mechanized. In some instances, that was dictated by the amount of movement that the suits would allow. Earlier versions were actually very tricky to move in and see anything in.What’s the craziest stunt you ever did for a Marvel movie? For Iron Man 3, we were jumping off cranes. Those cranes were 300-, maybe 400-feet high. Launching yourself off the side of those was interesting. Definite leaps of faith, especially since it was all shot at night. You’re leaping into darkness and trusting that the various cables you’re attached to are going to do what they’re supposed to.Got any MCU war stories?I’ve certainly taken some knocks. Nothing that has particularly stopped me from continuing with a project. On all the Marvel projects, we’ve been very lucky in having had a good group of stunt engineering guys or girls. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to be on those rigs or whatever it was and come out the other side.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)What was the most memorable part of working on Endgame? The scene were Tony travels back in time and he’s dressed as a SWAT guy in the past, but [the 2012 version of him] is talking to Robert Redford. They did that whole sequence in the morning, and I was the [present-day Tony] in the background, in the SWAT gear, observing him while he went through this whole scene. It was sprung on me that for the afternoon’s work Robert [Downey Jr.] would be the guy in the SWAT gear, so they would do the close-up stuff on him, watching me, now perform that whole dialogue sequence. I essentially got to act on screen, with dialogue, not only with Chris Hemsworth, but with an absolute living icon, Robert Redford. That was incredibly memorable to me.What has it mean to you to be part of the MCU for a decade?I remember seeing a documentary about Star Wars as a kid, and they showed Darth Vader without a mask. I remember thinking, “that would be the coolest job ever. To be a character like that, and to actually be the guy in the mask, to be that iconic, awe-inspiring character.” I came to do Iron Man 2, and they told me I was going to wear the suit, and the first time I ever put it on, it was for a sequence where there’s a party in Tony’s house. They put the helmet on me, and I suddenly had a flashback to that moment as a kid of seeing Darth Vader helmeted, and I suddenly thought, “oh my goodness, this is that moment that I imagined as a kid.”Loyd Bateman: Double for The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) These large chunks of foam that you’d have to wear in order to make parts of your body the correct size — that makes it tricky. (Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)What was the first Marvel movie you worked on?I actually have only done Infinity War and Endgame. How did you get the job?I’ve been working in film for almost 20 years now, doing stunts and etcetera. I sent a short reel of some of the things that I’ve done, including a short film that I made for my son called Zarg Attack!. He wanted to fight a giant robot. I did a stop-motion animation robot and made it attack him. I think it’s that clip that landed me the job, between that and my performance stuff. What was it like meeting Mark Ruffalo for the first time?Mark was really sweet. It was early 2017 when we started to do some of the motion-capture stuff for Infinity War. Right out of the gate he was very friendly, very sweet, very open. Talked a little bit about how he was playing about it, the character. I brought some of my ideas to the table, and he was really open and receptive. What’s the difference between doubling for Bruce Banner and for the Hulk?If I’m completely honest, I’m physically larger and, I daresay, a hair more muscular than Mark, so I actually didn’t do any of the Bruce Banner stuff. I did all the motion capture stuff for the Hulk, and for smart-Hulk.While wearing the motion-capture suit, did you also have a fake head on a stick, like the ones Josh Brolin wore as Thanos? We did from time to time, just as a height reference, but often if we were being really physical, it would just break. We would take it off to do what we needed to do. Also, often the character would be fighting other characters of equivalent size, so it was less tricky. Thanos would often be fighting human-sized characters, so there were eyeline issues all the time and size issues.(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)Did the motion-capture nature of the character make doing the stunts more complicated? It was a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you can wear as much padding as you wanted. You could be as safe as you needed. Sometimes, though, with all the extra gear on — like height offsets or these large chunks of foam that you’d have to wear in order to make parts of your body the correct size — that makes it tricky. Other than that, not too difficult. What was the craziest stunt you’ve done for a Marvel movie? The stunts weren’t physically that huge for my character. The more complex stuff was fight choreography, really. For this particular character, any of the explosions or huge falls he would have to do, they would just do it completely with computers. It’s a magic show. It’s a lot of trickery. We got to have fun, be safe, and do things that were spectacular at the same time.Did you ever get injured? We always get bumps and bruises. I don’t mean to put my experience too lightly. Obviously the human characters who are acting with real practical walls and windows and things are going to have a much harder time, but I still did a certain amount of getting kicked and punched backwards, landing on things, all that sort of stuff. What was the most memorable part of working on Endgame?Watching the finished film in the theater, I think was the most memorable to me, because seeing it all come together after all that time and all that effort, how hard everyone worked, everyone putting their heart and soul into it. Seeing it all come together and getting to watch it with a group of people was actually made it was the most memorable thing. It was fantastic.Daniel Hargrave: Double for Captain America (Chris Evans) That America’s ass shot, when he’s on the ground, was shot during additional photography – that was all Chris Evans. (Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)What was the first Marvel movie you worked on?Captain America: The Winter Soldier. How did you get the job?My brother Sam had doubled Chris Evans for the whole movie, and they were going to do some additional photography. Sam and I were actually working on The Hunger Games, and he had a long beard and he didn’t feel like shaving for a couple days of reshoots so he volunteered me. I went out there and doubled Chris for one scene. What was it like meeting Chris Evans for the first time?He was super nice. My brother had a good relationship with Chris, and he was very cordial and nice to me. Of course, he expected me to be like my brother and perform at a higher level, so it was a little pressure, first time meeting him, but he was a very nice guy. What’s the craziest stunt you’ve ever done for a Marvel movie? In Endgame, when my brother and me were both doubling Cap for the “Cap versus Cap” scene. There was the double stair fall, where we both ran and jumped off of a platform down the stairs at the same time, and went crashing down the stairs and off the edge into a box catcher, and then they hoisted us up. It was a throwback to when we were little kids on the farm, we used to make little videos. Kinda funny, now 25 years later, we’re doing it on the big screen for one of the biggest movies in the world. It was awesome, a dream come true.

9.59.5 7月喜迎nd masculinity. Nichols walks a fine line between finding Val’s request and the subsequent comedy of errors it precipitates as preposterous and hilarious, insulting and entertaining. And while Albert may look like a fey stooge, it is his sensibility which runs through the film; it’s his drag which saves the day and reveals the Keeleys’ (and Val’s) hang-ups as utterly laughable. In its campy theatrics, The Birdcage encourages us all to be more like Albert, to see in his gay femininity a kind of strength we all too often mock and disparage. Stranger Things returns July 4 to a warm reception from critics for its new season. The first reviews out propelled the season 3 to Certified Fresh status within the day on Sunday, in one of the fastest designations in Rotten Tomatoes history. The series sets its third season in the summer, starting out all warm breezes, sunny skies, baking skin, splashing pools, and young romance. But this is Hawkins, Indiana, and stranger things lurk beneath that veneer of 80s suburban normalcy.Cue the Netflix series Goonies-like crew: supernatural Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Will (Noah Schnapp), Max (Sadie Sink), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and Steve (Joe Keery).Parents and other siblings also return, including scene-stealing Priah Ferguson as Lucas sister Erica, Dacre Montgomery as Max s bully brother Billy, and, of course, Winona Ryder as Will and Jonathan s mom Joyce and David Harbour as police chief Jim Hopper, who last season adopted the role as Eleven s father in attachment if not legally. In season 3, their bond is stronger than ever.See what critics had to say about Stranger Things: Season 3 (2019) 89% below.Something Old(Photo by Netflix) Reliable, durable and comfortable, ST3 is what you d expect and certainly what you want, if what you want is seasons 1 and 2, with a few big twists along the way. — Verne Gay, NewsdaySomething New(Photo by Netflix) Our heroes are not the goofy young kids they used to be. meanwhile in the upside down pic.twitter.com/BtPlMjy0pS Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) October 1, 2020Filming had only been underway for about a month when the COVID-19 pandemic cut production short, but it resumed again at the very end of September. Needless to say, the show was certainly not going to be ready to air until the latter half of 2021 at the earliest. Up to this point, each season came out around the time of year when it took place — i.e. Season 2 took place around Halloween and was released in October, Season 3 took place over summer break and came out around the 4th of July — and the fact that the upcoming season takes place during the school year (and, judging from social media clues, in the fall) led us to believe Season 4 could have potentially premiered in the fall of 2021. Then, of course, we got the teaser released on August 6, 2021, which didn t show us much of anything new, but declared that Season 4 would drop sometime in 2022. Is it possible that Netflix will hold it until the fall of 2022 to keep with tradition? Maybe, but that means we ve got a long wait ahead of us.Will There Be More? There had been plenty of speculation that the fourth season of Stranger Things would be the last — especially since the young actors definitely don t look like middle schoolers anymore. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer said that the story isn t wrapping up just yet. Season 4 won t be the end, he said. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic-induced shut-down] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story. What s Up With This Eleven Teaser? While there s still no premiere date, the powers that be at Netflix know that multiple years is way too long to go without any new Stranger Things content whatsoever — which is why they released a new (mysterious, of course) teaser in May hinting at some previously unrevealed information about Season 4.The minute-long clip is focused on Eleven, featuring what appears to be a flashback of the facility where our favorite superpowered teen was raised. As the clock strikes 3 (you ll recall we know episode 2 is titled  Tick Tok Mr. Clock ), children play games (including what looks like Demogorgon chess — Queen s Gambit crossover confirmed! kidding) in a medical/science-type facility. A magic 8 ball reads signs point to yes and a Plinko game with discs that landed on numbers 4, 7 and 8. A man says, Good morning, children as the camera pans to a door with 11 on it — and our Eleven (played by Brown), startled, opens her eyes. What does it mean?! And are we getting more?! From promising releases by new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week. For the foreseeable future, the specialty box office and all theatrical releases will be on hold as we all make efforts to socially distance ourselves and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. This week we have an Irish crime thriller, a World War II tearjerker, and a documentary about ACLU lawyers. 梦幻诛仙哪个职业好 Toy Story 4 is nothing if not sincere. During a one-and-a-half-day visit to the Pixar campus in Emeryville – part of the California East Bay golden triangle of art-driven cities including Oakland and Berkeley – over a dozen supervisors, writers, and digital artisans hosted workshops and seminars about their upcoming June movie to answer the question that s on all our minds: Why? Why make another Toy Story? Especially when Toy Story 3 felt like the end; Andy passing his toys on to the next generation as he moves to college, the camera panning up to the sky, a bookend with the same clouds that opened the Toy Story back in 1995. Toy Story 3 delivered a mint-in-box rarity in today s world of tempting serialized storytelling and cinematic universes: A sense of finality, and closure. Why mess with that?Minor spoiler warning: This article describes the opening scene of Toy Story 4!It started in 2014.We re sitting in a board room with Pixar character modelers, directing animators, and story supervisors and artists. Like the rest of the world, they tell us, Pixar had moved on from Toy Story, not expecting to see the franchise s characters on the screen again, outside of shorts and television specials. Monsters University had just released. They were gearing up for the one-two punch of Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Amidst the streamlined chaos, an impossible idea persisted: That there was still more Toy Story to tell, and it deserved to be on the biggest screens possible across the world. The idea turned to talk, turned to pencil against paper, turned to cursors across monitors, turned into crews and planning and development, until Toy Story 4 moved into The Steve Jobs Building, the campus section where movies are officially in production.BO PEEP FINALLY GETS HER DUEPixar story supervisor Valerie LaPointe tells the room that there are people at Pixar who, as children, had their world expanded watching Toy Story in theaters in 1995, who now get to work on the fourth, and understand the legacy they re molding on their computers every day. To LaPointe s left are five women, who minutes before had each spoken about their role on TS4, nodding in agreement. They are a crucial creative force at Pixar, and instrumental in forging the emotional ace of the new movie: Bo Peep. The porcelain lamp with her flock of sheep (voiced, as always, by Annie Potts) had a minor but memorable role in the original Toy Story as Woody s flame, with less to do in Toy Story 2. And while the main characters got their glorious (seeming) sendoff in Toy Story 3, Bo wasn t there at all, having been reduced to a sacrificial plot point to motivate and illuminate her boyfriend s emotional pain. Clearly, there was more story to tell, because her story hadn t been told at all.Toy Story 4 opens with a flashback. It s nighttime at Andy s house, in the middle of a downpour, set a bit before Toy Story 3. R/C is outside caught in a gutter torrent, spinning his wheels to keep from getting sucked into a sewer drain. Bo and Woody, always the contingency planners, execute a rescue mission that saves R/C and leaves Woody momentarily underneath a car in the driveway. Everything looks photo-decadent: the rain, the lighting, the subtle scuff on Buzz s plastic armor plating. Pixar has found new vistas to paint once again. Then, the bombshell: Molly, Andy s sister, is growing up and Bo s watch has ended – she s being carried in a box to the car, and soon to be off into the great donated unknown. Bo has accepted her fate, having long since known a porcelain lamp doesn t have quite the shelf life of a talking cowboy or space commando. Woody is frantic, and he attempts to get her out of the box. Bo does the opposite, offering a place beside her. Just as Bo knows her destination, Woody knows his is entwined with Andy, and as the car peels off, he s left in the driveway splintered by the rain. It s not quite Up territory in terms of Pixar opening-scene tearjerkers, but considering we ve known these characters for nearly 25 years, it s damn close.EYES PEELED FOR PLENTY OF PIXAR EASTER EGGSFor eagle-eyed viewers, something may catch your attention: The car s license plate – always cinematic fertile ground for easter eggs, especially in Pixar films. RMR F97, the plates read. But what does it mean? It is an easter egg! director Josh Cooley laughed during our press conference. On Toy Story 2, there was someone who worked on the show that accidentally deleted the movie from the render farm, producer Mark Nielsen said, who worked modeling and shading on Toy Story 2.  That was the command on the computer that deleted the film. Galyn Susman, who was an early producer on this film, was on maternity leave and had a backup of the movie at her house, and brought it back to Pixar and restored it, added producer Jonas Rivera. It felt appropriate that the license plate on the car that takes Bo away would be the same that killed Toy Story 2. From the filmmakers words and the footage and material shown, it becomes apparent Toy Story 4 will probably become the most easter egg-laden movie the studio has ever produced. At one point, Woody and Forky – a spork with googly eyes and pipe-cleaner arms come to life, who exists as his own existential quandary – end up in an antique store. Full of neat knick-knacks and weathered baubles, it s a set piece that puts Pixar s detailed creativity on full display, not to mention plenty of references to their past.Look for a sign that says Papa Rivera s, a reference to the aforementioned producer. The Eggman Movers truck, around since the first Toy Story, makes a comeback, long known to be tied to art director Ralph Eggleston. From Finding Nemo, you can see the tiki heads from the fish tank on some shelves. There s steel decoration for Catmull s Brews, named after Ed Catmull, who s been with the company since the beginning and is retiring the month after Toy Story 4 is released. The Catmull sign hangs over a pinball machine whose interior has been turned into a miniature nightclub; Tinny, from the 1988 short Tin Toy, is the bouncer. (And for you pinheads out there, the machine was modeled after Bally s 1977 Black Jack – and we saw that tucked away in a room at Pixar HQ when we were doing a workshop making our own Forkys.)A FEMALE VILLAIN, FULL-ON BODY HORROR, AND BOO?Elsewhere in the antique store, Woody and Forky meet Gabby-Gabby, an angelic 50s doll and the first female antagonist of the series. Gabby Gabby commands a league of dapper and wholly unsettling ventriloquist dummies who do her bidding, like trying to rip out Woody s voice box to replace her own broken one. To set the body horror mood, Gabby Gabby puts on a record playing music from Coco, the vinyl pressed on the prestigious Chalupa Records. And that s not the only Coco reference. Part of the road trip includes visiting a carnival fair across the street from the antique store, which is where Woody reunites with Bo, who has been leading a joyous, independent, if not occasionally challenging life as a lost toy. One of the carnival game prizes is the guitar from Coco. And who s joined in among the festivities? A teenage Boo from Monsters, Inc, who appears to have not changed her style since 2001. Hey, purple shirts and scrunchies are eternal! And all those easter eggs were from less than 30 minutes of footage. As Toy Story 4 has been in the works for the last five years, the studio has seen some major changes. Ed Catmull is retiring. Beloved animator Bud Luckey passed away (he was all over the classic Boundin short). And founder John Lasseter left in scandal. It’s been a different time from their heyday, when Pixar racked up 11 Certified Fresh movies between Toy Story and 3; then a record, now overtaken by Marvel Studios current 14. During the visit, it s clear here was a movie being made by people both filmmaker and fan, who see this as a continuation of the golden age. Maybe they re always like this with their movies. For anyone born after 2010, this is the first chance to watch a new Toy Story on the big screen. It could even be their first movie theater experience ever. That s quite the gift. It s the same one Pixar offered in 1995, and many people who took it back then, grew up, got a job there, made Toy Story 4, talked to a bunch of press, and now get to offer it up to a new generation. Returning to the toy cowboy who s devoted to the joy of others, Pixar has become the studio it always was: A house of toil and dream, where old things find new life.Like this? there someone in your life who is not a critic whose opinion you admire?I think as much as I d like to say I am my own autonomous person and no one else s opinion is better than mine, I ll still be like, Mom, did you think that movie was good? (Photo by MGM)What is your favorite classic film?Oh, gosh. So many. I love Singin in the Rain and Meet Me in St. Louis. It s a smaller film, but I got to throw out there, too – it s called On an Island with You. It would never be remade today because it is the story of a guy who knows in his heart that a woman loves him, so he proceeds to kidnap her and put her on a remote island to make her love him by any way, shape, or form, and it s a romance and it s delightful. It s like one of those color spectacles with Esther Williams swimming and it s a lot of fun, but it is so problematic. Is there an actor, director, or screenwriter whose work you always love?If we re talking directors, Sofia Coppola. For better or worse, I know that her movies definitely cater to white girls who haven t really grown out of their teenage dreams, and that s very much me, so I love her. Actors, the running joke with my friends is that if it s Oscar Isaac or Jon Bernthal, I will be there no matter what movie it is.Who are some fellow critics whose work you admire? When I was younger and I was first starting out, I always talked about the A.O. Scotts and the Peter Traverses and I realized very late in my life, I was like, They re all men. Why do I only gravitate toward male writers? It s been a learning process for me to find female critics and people that I do admire, so the April Wolfes, and the Emily VanDerWerffs. Those are the people that I definitely look up to because they are coming at film from marginalized perspective. It s laying the groundwork for me to go there and talk about a completely different road of thought.(Photo by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)What is your favorite movie from your childhood?Oh, My Girl. I became an English major because I watched that as a child and I thought Griffin Dunne was the most gorgeous person in the entire world, and I figured if I became an English major, then I would find someone that looked like him. That was a lie, but I did it anyway. My Girl is the reason that I am the way that I am.Do you have advice for critics who are still finding their voice?I ve been told by people that “nobody goes to the movies to go see reality,” and I say, Well, that s not true. People want to see something that reminds them of them, something that they can relate to, and if your perspective is to look at a film from a trans perspective or a disabled perspective or a race perspective, that s valuable.I always say that if you have something, a voice or a thought or an angle that you want to explore with a film, you definitely have every right to put that out there. Nine times out of 10, you ll find somebody who is the exact same way.How has the digital landscape influenced your criticism? It s funny. I had somebody tell me, One day you ll work in a big magazine office, and I was like, Not necessarily,” because at the time digital was overtaking print media. But when you are a disabled person, you realize some places aren t physically prepared for a disabled person to work there. Some places are still not ADA-compliant, so for me, the digital landscape allows me an even playing-field.What are you most proud of in your career so far?I m always proud of the fact that somebody read something I wrote and they learned something. I do have my nerdy stuff – I ve interviewed some fantastic people that I never in my wildest dreams thought that I d get to talk to – but for me, it s the fact that I get to write about disability and be an expert on something. Never did I think that I use a wheelchair and that made me an expert on something, but I ve been able to use that and have people say to me, I didn t think that way, and you re right. I should be thinking about disabled people.”The unfortunate fact is that we live in a world now with the way politics are where disabled people are still incredibly marginalized, and I think film is a great conduit to talk about disabled issues, so if somebody reads something I wrote and they say that they ve learned something from it, I feel like that s a bigger accomplishment, because teaching somebody like that… I could only have done it with writing. If your life were a movie, what genre would it be?Well, I ve got the reality there where I would just be like, No one would tell my story because they don t tell stories about disabled women, especially not with a sailor s mouth and my Twitter feed. They d say, No, you don t exist, we ve never met a disabled woman like you on-screen. Audiences would not understand it.” That s how I m assuming Hollywood would be, but I d like to think that if ableism was not a factor, it would be a comedy.Kristen Lopez is a freelance pop culture essayist.
