(Photo by Everett Collection)Our new Classic Film Catch-Up feature connects you with classic films to put on your watchlist – beloved favorites and hidden gems alike. With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watch lists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you. This week in the Classic Film Catch-Up, we re ready to dance and sing about lesser-known or forgotten musicals – some classics, and some should-be-classics. The 50s and 60s were truly the golden ages of movie musicals; Best Picture winners like The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, and An American in Paris made stars out of Natalie Wood, Leslie Caron, and Rita Moreno, while established stars like Julie Andrews, Gene Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn catapulted to icon status on the backs of musical roles during this period. Later years saw rock musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Tommy break into the mainstream – however, countless gems have been largely forgotten by modern audiences. And we re here to fix that. Some titles on this list found cult-like followings in later years while others were unfortunate victims of too-close comparisons with their Broadway inspiration – either way, we think the films make up an eclectic roster of must-watch musicals. Read below for our list of hidden gem classic musicals you need to see or revisit.Got another favorite hidden gem classic musical you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) 78% What is it? A rags to riches musical about a famed socialite who survived the sinking of the Titanic. Why you need to see it: Debbie Reynolds is widely known for her role in Singin in the Rain – and for being Carrie Fisher s mother. However, if you want to see the triple-threat performer at her peak you must watch The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Reynolds plays the famed Denver socialite from humble beginnings who survived a flood as an infant and then the Titanic disaster as an adult. The film follows a fictional Molly from her years as a saloon girl to her eventual fame as one of the richest women in the country. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was a hit for MGM, but is not as familiar to modern audiences as some of its glossy contemporaries. Filled with humor and show-stopping numbers, the movie will have you humming ditties like  I ll Never Say No and Belly Up to the Bar, Boys as soon as the credits roll.Watch it if you like: Singin in the Rain, Princess Diaries, The Great Gadsby, Lawless, Funny Girl, My Fair LadyWhere to watch: Stream on TCMWatch app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Man of La Mancha (1972) 50% What is it? A musical biopic about Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, using his most famed literary creation as a plot device. Why you need to see it: It s hard to understand why the film adaptation of The Man from La Mancha starring Peter O Toole and Sophia Loren was not a critical and commercial hit. The original stage production was a smash on Broadway and took home five Tonys, but audiences were none-too-impressed with the film version: It failed to earn back its production budget and Time thought so little of it that the magazine didn t even publish a full review. Most of the problems with the adaptation are a result of its troubled production; a revolving door of directors and a heated debate over whether to make the film a musical at all crippled any effort to do justice to the source material. The dreary costumes, laughable sets, and indifferent cinematography may mar the overall product, but the music remains incredible, and Toole and Loren give it their all despite the challenges. So it s still worth a watch.Watch it if you like: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Don Juan Demarco, Monty Python, and the Holy Grail, The Mask of Zorro, The Three MusketeersWhere to watch: Stream now on HooplaDigital. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, and iTunes.Carmen Jones (1954) 77% (Photo by Courtesy of 2Oth Century Fox)What is it? George Bizet s Carmen is re-imagined with an all-Black cast. Why you need to see it: Carmen Jones is another Broadway hit to get the Hollywood treatment. Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carroll, Pearl Bailey, and Harry Belafonte are mesmerizing in this story of the misadventures of a troublesome seductress living in America during World War II. Playing Carmen, Dandridge made her mark on history, becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Nominated for two Oscars, the film is well-known but not frequently watched. The performances, costumes, and rich Technicolor landscapes make watching the film a truly transformative experience that is almost enough to forgive the choice to dub the voices of famed singers in the production.Watch it if you like: Porgy Bess, Introducing Dorthy Dandridge, Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, Rent, Les MiserablesWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The Wiz (1978) 42% What is it? The Wizard of OZ is remade with a contemporary story, new music, and an all-Black cast. Why you need to see it: As many Twitter users pointed out during NBC s The Wiz Live! in 2015, many movie fans have not seen The Wiz. Beloved in the Black community, the film was a commercial disaster despite starring icons Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne. A modern imagining of Dorothy s trek along the yellow brick road – with music from Quincy Jones and Luther Vandross, direction by Sidney Lumet, and words by Joel Schumacher – the film was one of the most expensive musical productions ever made, and lost million at the box office. The film s popularity never matched its ambition outside of the Black community, where it s still lauded as a cult classic. And it s easy to see why when you watch it today. With some of the most gifted musicians of our time in front of and behind the camera, The Wiz is a soulful crowd pleaser that showcases these artists at the height of their popularity and powers.Watch it if you like: The Wizard of OZ, Oz, The Great and Powerful, Return to Oz, Moonwalker, Idlewild, LabyrinthWhere to watch: Stream now on Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) 67% (Photo by Courtesy of 20th Century Fox)What is it? Chronicles the lives and loves of The Donahues, a family vaudeville act.Why you need to see it: In a way, this is the original jukebox movie musical – all of the songs from There s No Business Like Show Business were previously penned by Irving Berlin for other works. Stacked with stage powerhouses like Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey, as well as film stars like Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O Connor, the film was primarily a vehicle to showcase Marilyn Monroe, who had just married Joe DiMaggio and was one of the biggest names and box office draws in Hollywood. However, with a near two-hour runtime (a rare feat for musicals of that era), audiences found the film to be a little too Broadway and lacking in story. Monroe, who famously only took the role to ensure her casting in The Seven Year Itch, didn t shine in any of her musical numbers and was lambasted by critics. Despite all this, however, There s No Business like Show Business does have some of the most incredible and lavish musical numbers ever committed to screen, and further highlights Berlin s incomparable musical catalog.Watch it if you like: A Chorus Line, Gypsy, Funny Girl, Some Like it Hot, The Greatest ShowmanWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Cover Girl (1944) 95% (Photo by Courtesy of Sony Home Entertainment)What is it? A young chorus girl wins a cover girl contest, is thrust into stardom, and must choose between her career or love. Why you need to see it: Rita Hayworth became one of only a handful of women who had the enviable honor of dancing with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astair on screen with her role in Cover Girl. Dancing alongside Kelly in her first role with top billing, Cover Girl was one of Hayworth s final films before Gilda solidified her as a film icon. Shown briefly in The Shawshank Redemption, Hayworth s iconic entrance and overall performance here was also the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A massive hit at the time, this story of a showgirl-turned-star has been sadly dwarfed in later years by Kelly s and Hayworth s more memorable roles like Singin in the Rain and The Lady From Shanghai, respectively.Watch it if you like: Gilda, Showboat, A Chorus Line, Almost Famous, A Star is Born, RockstarWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Hair (1979) 88% What is it? An anti-war rock musical set within the hippie counter culture. Why you need to see it: Though many will know Hair s catchy opening number  Aquarius, the musical itself is a bit of a lesser-known treasure outside of musical theater obsessives. The first film directed by Milos Forman after his critical and commercial smash One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest, Hair had critics raving about his skill in adapting the controversial and stylized musical. Roger Ebert said of Forman: He brings life to the musical form in the same way that West Side Story did. Still, some contemporaries – including the musical s creators – argued it diluted the musical s anti-war message was diluted on the journey from stage to screen.Watch it if you like: Jesus Christ Superstar, Across the Universe, Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Fear Loathing in Las VegasWhere to watch: Stream now on Hoopla and PrimeVideo. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Google Play, and iTunes. owski years later. I think it all started when we hit on the name Elvis Presto. The rest kind of evolved from there. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXIVPerformers: Super Bowl XXIV was held in New Orleans and coincided with the 40th anniversary of Charles Schulz s beloved Peanuts comics, so naturally, the league decided to put em both together for a halftime show that celebrated Charlie Brown and the gang, as well as the culture of New Orleans. Performers included singer Irma Thomas, fiddler Doug Kershaw, and clarinetist Pete Fountain plus Snoopy.Critical Response: A tribute to New Orleans, also to the 40th anniversary of the comic strip Peanuts, and maybe also to drugs, wrote Rolling Stone s Rob Sheffield. Because Charlie Brown has what exactly the hell to do with jambalaya and Mardi Gras again? Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXVPerformers: By the early 90s, the league — and more importantly, the networks trapped in an annual bidding war for the right to broadcast the show — recognized the need to safeguard against counter-programming luring viewers eyes away at halftime, particularly during a stretch of games that included a series of lopsided victories. Enter New Kids on the Block, who took the stage during Super Bowl XXV s halftime for a Disney-inspired celebration that included a performance of It s a Small World. It was preempted during the broadcast by a Gulf War speech from President George Bush, and overshadowed afterward by Whitney Houston s rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner — all of which was a relief to the New Kids, according to member Donnie Wahlberg.Critical Response: I don’t know how much pride I take in the actual performance, admitted Wahlberg. But I take pride in the fact that we were the first ones to do it. Verdict: Fresh. As Wahlberg noted, the New Kids were the first of-the-moment pop stars to perform during a Super Bowl halftime show even if no one outside the stadium saw it.Super Bowl XXVIPerformers: Held at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, the Super Bowl XXVI halftime show was themed around Winter Magic, featuring Gloria Estefan, Olympic figure skaters Dorothy Hamill and Brian Boitano, and backup from rapping kids, dancers, and members of the 1980 U.S. Olympics hockey team.Critical Response: It may have had its absurdly entertaining moments, but the show was embarrassed by Fox s In Living Color, which aired a Super Halftime Party episode that leeched roughly 22 million viewers away from the game.Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXVIIPerformers: Stung by the halftime ratings from the previous year, producers stepped up their game for Super Bowl XXVII, booking Michael Jackson — still out promoting his 1991 Dangerous LP — to perform a three-song set that s widely credited with redefining the league s approach to the show.Critical Response: As the New York Times put it, Michael Jackson’s legacy will forever include this title: King of Pigskin. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XXVIIIPerformers: No country artist was bigger in the 90s than Garth Brooks. He didn t play during the Super Bowl XXVIII halftime show, but producers lined up a multi-platinum quartet to bring sufficient star wattage to its Rockin Country Sunday spectacular, hiring Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, and the Judds to perform.Critical Response: Country music haters forced to watch this spectacle must have had their worst suspicion confirmed, wrote Entertainment Weekly s Ken Tucker. That country is just pop with with less sophistication. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXIXPerformers: Clearly, this game s halftime show is no stranger to bizarre spectacle, but even in context, Super Bowl XXIX is something special. Designed to tie in with Disneyland s new Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye attraction, it featured stand-ins for Harrison Ford and Karen Allen on a quest to rescue the stolen Lombardi Trophy (and musical numbers from Patti LaBelle, Tony Bennett, Arturo Sandoval, and the Miami Sound Machine).Critical Response: Words can t quite do it justice, but SB Nation might have summed it up best: Indiana Jones + singers parents will love + Disney music = a halftime show so 1990s it should be wearing spaghetti straps and feathered bangs. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXXPerformers: There s no denying that Diana Ross was well past her hitmaking prime when she took the stage for the Super Bowl XXX halftime show but there s also no arguing that she came to show everyone else how it should be done. Classic songs? Check. A whopping four outfit changes? Check. Leaving the field in a helicopter? Check.Critical Response: A spectacular triumph, wrote Tom Shales for the Washington Post. Perhaps the best halftime show ever. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XXXIPerformers: As far as most of us are concerned, the Blues Brothers effectively ceased to exist after John Belushi s untimely passing in 1982. But surviving Brother Dan Aykroyd had other ideas, enlisting Belushi s brother Jim, John Goodman, and the members of ZZ Top for a Super Bowl Blues Brothers Bash that made up in attitude whatever it may have lacked in necessity.Critical Response: The event only served to remind everyone that John Belushi was still dead, wrote the San Francisco Chronicle s Peter Hartlaub, and that Jim Belushi should stick to straight-to-video K-9 sequels. Verdict: James Brown made an appearance, ergo the only possible verdict is Fresh.Super Bowl XXXIIPerformers: The league helped Motown celebrate its 40th anniversary with a halftime musical extravaganza featuring classic Hitsville acts (Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, Martha Reeves) alongside the label s new wave of chart-toppers (Boyz II Men, Queen Latifah). Also: the Grambling State University Marching Band.Critical Response: The set opens with the Temptations in what appear to be full denim suits, shrugged Vox, and only goes downhill from there. Verdict: The presentation might not have been perfect, but the songs are classics. Fresh.Super Bowl XXXIIIPerformers: Pundits chortled when Aerosmith played alongside ‘N Sync and Britney Spears in Super Bowl XXXV, but it was just part of a long tradition of halftime shows built out of wildly disparate ingredients. Case in point: Super Bowl XXXIII s halftime entertainment, which boasted a bill that included Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan, and briefly popular swing revivalists Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.Critical Response: Lamenting that Apparently someone thought Stevie Wonder didn’t pack enough star power to command the entire Super Bowl halftime stage, Idolator called the end result all over the place. Verdict: It s far from perfect, but Stevie performing Sir Duke in honor of Duke Ellington s 100th birthday? Fresh.Super Bowl XXXIVPerformers: Once again, Disney took the production reins for a Super Bowl halftime show, offering viewers a Tapestry of Nations that featured an intriguing-looking roster of performers — Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, and Tina Turner — who were handed a set list that resolutely refused to play to any of their strengths. From Turner s lackluster rendition of Proud Mary to Collins performance of a ballad from the Tarzan soundtrack, this never really got out of second gear.Critical Response: Anything produced by Disney is expected to be corny and sentimental, enough to make you angry and not go to work the next day, wrote Yahoo! Music s Rob O Connor. It takes a full lineup of processed cheese to top the pack. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXXVPerformers: As we ve seen, the Super Bowl has a tendency to toss unrelated acts together for its halftime shows, and as often as not, the results aren t as weirdly entertaining as they might seem on paper. But Super Bowl XXXV bucked that trend with a bill boasting Aerosmith, N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, and Nelly — a wild collision of pop, rock, and R B stars that worked in spite of itself.Critical Response: Adam Graham of the Detroit News called it The most fun halftime show the Super Bowl has ever produced, one whose sheer pop might won’t soon, if ever, be matched. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XXXVIPerformers: Understandably a little leery about embracing frivolity so soon after the September 11 attacks, Janet Jackson rebuffed the NFL s overtures for Super Bowl XXXVI — so they turned to U2, who delivered a heartfelt set that included scrolling the victims names on a big screen and culminated with frontman Bono opening his jacket to reveal the American flag.Critical Response: It was, decreed Sports Illustrated, arguably the best Super Bowl halftime show of all time. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XXXVIIPerformers: What does Sting have to do with No Doubt? As the Police co-founder told Howard Stern years later, he and frontwoman Gwen Stefani go way back — a bond that manifested itself when she inducted the band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later that year. Stefani and Sting s duet on the Police hit Message in a Bottle stole the show from Shania Twain, who took a critical drubbing for her allegedly lip-synced performance.Critical Response: No thanks to Twain, wrote the Los Angeles Times, Stefani saved the play by doing what she does best, super-charging a Southern California crowd in a stadium setting through sheer force of ska-sonality. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XXXVIIIPerformers: You remember this one — even if you don t remember that Jessica Simpson, a University of Houston marching band, Kid Rock, Diddy, and Nelly also performed. Those Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime acts were bumped into the ashbin of history the moment Justin Timberlake caused the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction that prompted a record-setting number of TiVo rewinds (as well as a not-inconsiderable number of FCC complaints).Critical Response: For one flashing moment during her performance at Sunday’s game, Janet’s brother was no longer the most scandalous Jackson, quipped Entertainment Weekly.Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XXXIXPerformers: Breaking with a stretch of combo-platter performances, the NFL lined up Paul McCartney for Super Bowl XXXIX — because if you ve got a former Beatle on the stage, do you really need anybody else? The answer, of course, turned out to be no, not at all. Critical Response: Who cares that football means something totally different in Macca’s hometown of Liverpool? asked Paste. His halftime set of Beatles and solo hits was simple, concise and nearly perfect. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLPerformers: Perhaps only in the context of the Super Bowl could the Rolling Stones still seem somewhat dangerous in 2006. Months after releasing their A Bigger Bang LP, the band played the halftime show — and faced censorship for vaguely naughty lyrics in their classic hit Start Me Up and new single Rough Justice. Trigger-happy mute buttons notwithstanding, it was still the Stones, man.Critical Response: They may have joked about their age — with Mick Jagger introducing (I Can t Get No) Satisfaction by saying This one we could have done at Super Bowl I,' admitted Hitfix, but they didn t come off like a safe nostalgia act. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLIPerformers: Long heralded as one of the most incendiary live performers of his generation, Prince didn t disappoint when the NFL hired him to play the halftime show at Super Bowl XLI. Instead of trotting out his greatest hits, he strolled out in the rain to deliver a fiery, finely calibrated assortment of originals and covers of well-known songs by other artists — all topped off with an unforgettable rendition of Purple Rain. For more than a few viewers, the Super Bowl has never been the same since.Critical Response: Prince, argued Christina Capatides for CBS, singlehandedly made it okay to be sexy, unpredictable and inventive at the Super Bowl again. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLIIPerformers: Aside from a brief flirtation with making outré videos in the 80s, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have never been an image-driven band. To their credit, they held fast to that music-first identity at Super Bowl XLII, eschewing the event s traditional glamour in favor of a meat-and-potatoes rock n roll show.Critical Response: Petty wasn t a reason to keep watching at halftime, observed the Village Voice s Tom Breihan. He was a reason not to change the channel. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLIIIPerformers: Telling reporters he d passed up on the chance to play the halftime show before, Bruce Springsteen openly admitted he changed his mind when invited to perform at Super Bowl XLIII because he had a new record (2009 s Working on a Dream) to promote. To a certain breed of rock fan, there s nothing quite like a Springsteen show, particularly with the E Street Band, and with a crowd of millions at their backs, they couldn t help but rock and roll — but maybe it wasn t quite the transcendent spectacle the Boss s fans were used to.Critical Response: While shilling does not carry the sting it once did, perhaps Springsteen let the weight of responsibility limit his imagination in his 12-minute set, Jon Caramanica of the New York Times suggested.Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLIVPerformers: They were decades removed from their creative and commercial peak and they hadn t released an album of new material in years, which made the Who something of an odd choice for Super Bowl XLIV. Of course, even if Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were the last surviving members of the original lineup, they still pack enough rock n roll punch to sell out stadiums; unfortunately, Townshend was struggling with health issues in the weeks leading up to the game, which contributed to their halftime show s altogether underwhelming air.Critical Response: All that was missing, wrote the New Orleans Times-Picayune s Keith Spera, was Austin Powers. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XLVPerformers: It seems fairly likely that the overlap between Black Eyed Peas and Guns N Roses fans is awfully slim, and yet for Super Bowl XLV, organizers lined up a halftime show that found Peas vocalist Fergie trying to wail her way through the GNR hit Sweet Child O Mine with exiled Guns co-founder Slash on guitar. Somewhat predictably, it compared unfavorably with the original.Critical Response: This is how far Slash has fallen, lamented SB Nation s Brian Floyd. Luckily nobody will remember his part as they rip everything else about the show. At least he s got that going for him. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl XLVIPerformers: Like Bruce Springsteen, Madonna had a new record to promote when she was approached to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show — and she pulled out all the stops, enlisting Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., and stars-of-the-moment LMFAO to join her in a hits-laden set that naturally included her then-current single, Give Me All Your Luvin . The performance wasn t short on spectacle — she entered being pulled on a chariot! — but quite a few critics, while entertained, resented being so transparently sold a bill of goods.Critical Response: Despite its success and extravagance, this whole halftime package most of all was little more than an ingeniously well planned and shockingly transparent advertisement, wrote the Los Angeles Times Randall Roberts, and not much more. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLVIIPerformers: Beyoncé was still months removed from releasing her self-titled fifth solo album when she took the stage during Super Bowl XLVII, but her disbanded girl group Destiny s Child had a new compilation to promote, so it surprised roughly no one that the trio staged a temporary reunion in the midst of Beyoncé s career-encompassing halftime show. Still, whatever it lacked in terms of shock value, it more than made up with stage presentation, choreography, and sheer bootylicious abandon.Critical Response: From the moment she appeared as a giant silhouette against a plume of smoke while the late Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi’s legendary excellence must be pursued Super Bowl speech was heard, wrote the Hollywood Reporter s David Rooney, Beyoncé turned on a high-energy, sexually charged performance with exciting multimedia elements. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLVIIIPerformers: Bruno Mars Unorthodox Jukebox LP was in the midst of its quadruple-platinum chart run when he performed at Super Bowl XLVIII, and although he was only on his second album, he already had more than enough hits under his belt to handle the halftime show on his own — but he still brought out the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a mid-set team-up on the band s 1991 hit Give It Away. The Peppers later admitted they d been miming their performance, but to the folks at home, it didn t matter much.Critical Response: Mars performance was near flawless, but the lift in crowd noise when the Chili Peppers played told a story: on this occasion spontaneous rock dynamism trumped slick soul pop, wrote the Sydney Morning Herald s Peter Vincent.Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl XLIXPerformers: The NFL continued its streak of selecting buzzy younger pop performers when putting together the bill for Super Bowl XLIX, hiring Katy Perry for the halftime show — and although Perry opened her set to include guest appearances from Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, it was totally her show. Well, maybe hers and Left Shark s, but still.Critical Response: With the entertaining, hassle-free show, Perry proved the NFL correct in her selection as halftime, argued USA Today s Chris Chase, calling the show one of the few things the NFL got right this year. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl 50Performers: For the Super Bowl s grand 50th anniversary celebration, the league lined up Coldplay to headline, with guest appearances from Beyoncé and Bruno Mars with Mark Ronson. Nothing against the guys in Coldplay, but their midtempo catalog isn t exactly suited for this type of event — all of which is to say it s no surprise that most pundits said Beyoncé s performance of Formation was the highlight of the set.Critical Response: By the time Bruno Mars challenged Bey to a dance-off, wrote Vox s Caroline Framke, she d stolen the show once and for all. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl LIPerformers: The 51st edition of any long-running event is bound to feel a little anticlimactic after all the pageantry that goes along with hitting that half-century milestone, but whatever Lady Gaga s halftime show lacked in built-in anticipation, it more than made up in sheer showmanship. From patriotic opening numbers to jaw-dropping aerial work and a hits-studded set that ran the gamut from chart-topping favorites to newer material, she took command of the biggest audience of her multiplatinum career and never let go. We re here to make you feel good, she told the crowd at one point, and that goal was more than evident in her performance.Critical Response: Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show, wrote Time s Daniel D addario, stands as among the very best in the history of the form, racing ambitiously through the artist’s entire career and putting forward the qualities of the artist that just work. Verdict: FreshSuper Bowl LIIPerformers: Justin Timberlake returned to the halftime stage for the first time since his Nipplegate fiasco in 2004. And while he didn t bring Janet Jackson back with him for a repeat performance, he did pay tribute to the recently departed Minneapolis hometown hero Prince via what some expected to be a hologram, but was actually a projection of the purple one on a screen.Critical Response:  The performance was decent, and Timberlake sounded good and danced even better. As far as half-time shows go, it was satisfactory, a fun but forgettable display of the singer’s substantial talents, wrote The Guardian s Jake Nevins. EW s Darren Franich summed it up: He played it too safe; he took Sexy away. Verdict: Fresh (barely)Super Bowl LIIIPerformers: Maroon 5 took on what promised to be a thankless task, headlining during a year in which controversy rampaged through the NFL over player Colin Kaepernick s kneeling during the National Anthem. (Rihanna and Cardi B reportedly said, Thanks, but no to the gig in solidarity with the former quarterback.) Rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi also performed.Critical Response: Yeesh. Not good. You d think Nickelback played based on the halftime show reviews. The New York Times  Jon Caramanica seemed to be satisfying a personal vendetta in his review: Maroon 5 — a quasi-soul, quasi-rock, utterly funkless band likely the third or eighth or maybe 14th choice for a headliner Maroon 5 was a cynically apt choice as easy to forget as mild weather a performance that was dynamically flat, mushy at the edges, worthy of something much worse than derision: a shrug an inessential performance from a band that might have lost some moral authority if it had any moral authority to lose. Vox s headline: Maroon 5 was fine. Writer Alex Abad-Santos went on to elaborate: Maroon 5’s 2019 Super Bowl halftime show was aggressively fine. Some other adjectives round out the picture: basic, flavorless, painful, and tasted like fear. Verdict: RottenSuper Bowl LIVPerformers: Politics raged once more in the background of the Super Bowl in 2020 – which was one of the last major events held in that blissful period we might now call BC, or Before COVID. The national anthem kneeling protest remained a divisive issue and America was gearing up for a fraught election season, but if anyone could unite both sides of the aisle, and the country, it was Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, joined briefly by Bad Bunny and J. Balvin. After Shakira s six-minute set – in which she was the first Latinx artist to perform music in Spanish during a halftime show – J-Lo came in and wowed with a ferociously choreographed journey through her greatest hits, including Let s Get Loud and Waiting For Tonight. Critical Response: Much of the focus leading up to the halftime show was on the milestone being made by having two Latina performers take the stage, and Lopez staged a chills-on-the-back-of-your-neck moment when daughter Emmie Muñiz sang Bruce Springsteen s Born in the USA as mom waved around a cape featuring the Puerto Rican and American flags. After the show there was chatter about some of revealing costumes – come on, we haven t gotten past this?! – and who upstaged whom. [Lopez] pushed further with dance than Shakira did, at the cost of a good grip of singing, Craig Jenkins wrote for Vulture. Her intricate routines nodded to the Super Bowl’s marching-band past, and suggested that someone’s paying attention to the fearlessly vertical routines in Cheer and large-scale productions like Homecoming. But the overwhelming assessment was that this was a landmark halftime show, and one loaded with meaning for the game and the country. For Rolling Stone, Suzy Exposito wrote, as much as this game has further aggravated divisions in the United States — it’s impossible to play down the fact that for 15 fleeting minutes, hundreds of millions of eyes were on Latinas. And not just Latinas, but Latinas getting loud. Verdict: FrescaOn an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

9.66.4 7月喜迎We also see that Alexandria is thriving in certain ways; more crops, more organized, new structures and buildings, and they ve got a pretty well-oiled society going on within the walls. Can we assume Eugene has been a big part of engineering all that as well?McDermitt: Yeah, we saw that in the first five episodes. He was working on the plans for the bridge. He is the big brain that brings it all together. But the communities are definitely working together to make that happen, not kind of like just one person, which is awesome. Each community is six years older as well, and it s possible that we have other survivors that we ve come in contact with that maybe know a thing or two about building a pizza oven or whatever we were going to add. It s not all just on Eugene, so that s allowed him to continue to build his confidence as a survivor, learn how to be proficient in knives and that sort of thing. His last big interaction with Rick was Rick telling him how important he was to their family, to their community, at a time when Eugene was apologizing for not having done more. You could tell, visibly, it meant a lot to Eugene to hear that from someone he respected so much. How much of that evolution of Eugene and this new confidence in him is a result of having gotten that praise, that recognition, that respect from Rick?McDermitt: I think you nailed it perfectly. I think that s exactly it. He s received the recognition from Abraham back in season 6 when Eugene stepped up to take the RV and try to lead the Saviors away. Abraham said, You are a survivor, like, you are a person who can live in this world and be self-sufficient. That was huge for them, that moment. And then as we see him get kidnapped by Negan,Negan starts to (spark) more and more value within Eugene. I think Eugene needs that affirmation; he needs people to say, Hey, you re not just this guy that s annoying me. You actually add value to this group. And I think to finally get that last piece from Rick was awesome. It was something that he d never had, and he had been with Rick a long time. Not that Rick was mistreating him or anything, but it was this thing: Eugene said, “If I could have done more —” and Rick said, “Don’t say that. You did all this, and after everything, that is everything.” That’s a huge moment for Eugene. I think without that, we may not have seen Eugene, who he is after the six-year time jump.(Photo by Gene Page/AMC)His new confidence allows him to try to take his friendship with Rosita to the next level, too. Do you think he s always been in love with Rosita?McDermitt: I think he s always been girl crazy, and I think with her, she is probably the person that he s closest with who s left within this group of survivors. He s just always had an eye on her and been attracted to her, but also, they have a brother-sister relationship more than anything, so maybe he s never really stepped up to do anything. But I think what s really driving this is seeing that Rosita and Gabriel are together, Eugene maybe feeling left out, like, “How come I didn t get a chance?” He says, “Look, I get it: Machete-wielding men of the cloth aren t exactly a dime a dozen. If that s your thing, that s your thing. But there s other people, people who ve known you longer, people with a different set of skills that —” And as he s evolving and growing into this bigger survivor who can be extremely self-sufficient — we see Daryl off living on his own. It wouldn t surprise me if Eugene feels like he could do that, too, if push came to shove.I think he s been wanting to not be left out for his whole life. I don t know that he would necessarily settle down if the apocalypse didn’t happen. He s just comfortable being him, but he s grown so much it s like, OK, maybe I should try a relationship. And who s the person I know the best? And that would be Rosita. What do you think Eugene s romance history is? Do you think he s ever been in love before? Had he ever dated before? Or as you said, that just wasn t something that was really important to him before the apocalypse?McDermitt: I ve always assumed that he s never really dated. He was just comfortable being — I always thought he lived with his mother — just comfortable being in his own world, playing his video games and eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and stuff like that.

As Princess Irulan notes in one of her many histories of the period chronicled within the pages of Frank Herbert’s Dune, “a beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct.” Herbert’s 1965 novel is one of the most beloved works of science fiction published in the 20th century and one of the hardest for Hollywood to crack. With that in mind, we hope to present the most accurate information possible about the upcoming film adaptation of Dune by director Denis Villeneuve and a look at some of the attempts to bring it to the screen thus far. As you will see, delicate care is one of the most important aspects of adapting Dune, as its lingo, characters, and ideas set it apart from other space movie franchises. With the film s first trailer newly released on September 9, a clearer picture of Villeneuve s film is beginning to emerge. Here s everything we know about Dune. [Updated on 9/9/20.]In The 57th Year Of The Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures)Originally published as three parts in the pages of Analog magazine, Dune is an epic of political intrigue, impossible feats of human will, and what happens when an entire ruling class gets high on their own supply. Set some 20,000 years in our future, it centers on a human star empire that, while advanced in terms of space travel, physical prowess, and mental abilities, has regressed to a quasi-feudal government with the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV as its ruler. In the year 10,191 (A.G., or After Guild, about 9,000 years in our future), he reassigns the House of Atreides from its ancestral seat on planet Caladan to Arrakis (also known as Dune ) – the one world in the known universe where the Spice Melange can be harvested. The Spice is a mystical, mind-altering substance enabling space navigation, prognostication, and a host of other abilities. Consequently, it is the most important commodity in the known universe. The reassignment of House Atreides is a political maneuver to eliminate Duke Leto Atreides before he can garner enough support from the other houses to oppose the Emperor, but Shaddam IV s seemingly simple decision will unleash several millennia of human strife.Beyond its gripping political yarn, Herbert devises amazing characters, like the crafty Baron Vladimir Harkonnen Duke Leto’s principle rival or the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, the leader of a sisterhood devoted to reaching the deepest recesses of the human psyche, but secretly breeding across the noble bloodlines for generations to create a being capable of going to the depths they cannot. There are supporting characters like Thufir Hawat, the Duke’s master of assassins and primary Mentat – a human conditioned for extreme computational abilities as computers and thinking machines are banned in the Imperium.Oh, and we almost forgot to mention the Duke’s son, Paul Atreides, the actual main character of Dune, who will go on an incredible odyssey of discovery that will actually fly in the face of the hero s journey seen in other science fiction film series. Paul’s story, and the worlds and peoples of Dune, set it apart from other science fiction epics in so many ways. It s complex and fully realized while still delivering a great read. Think of it as a Lord of the Rings in space although, its rejection of hereditary rulers definitely puts it at odds with J.R.R. Tolkien.Of course, that complexity makes it extremely difficult to adapt as Villenueve himself would note, the story is about the capacity for people to adapt to change not that this has stopped people from trying since the 1970s.The Filmmakers Who Tried(Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics)As rich as Dune is to read, the story of its cinematic odyssey is equally compelling. The first attempt, by Planet of the Apes producer Arthur P. Jacobs, was aborted when the producer passed away on June 27, 1973. As outlined in the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, Chilean filmmaker/provocateur Alejandro Jodorowsky and producer Jean-Paul Gibon picked up the rights from Jacobs company in 1974. The project was to feature talent like Orson Welles as the Baron Harkonnen and Salvador Dalí as Emperor Shaddam IV. Behind the camera, Alie

(Deadline)RuPaul, Ike Barinholtz, and Lauren Ash will star in the Netflix animated comedy Chicago Party Aunt, about life of the party Diane (Ash), whose motto is, “When life gives you lemons, turn that s into Mike’s Hard Lemonade.”

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for stars like Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, and Tiffany Haddish. This WEEK S TOP STORYRYAN GOSLING TO STAR IN DAVID LEITCH ACTION FILM(Photo by Richard Foreman Jr/©FilmDistrict)About seven years ago, the news broke that Dwayne Johnson was in talks to star in an adaptation of the 1980s action TV show The Fall Guy, which featured Lee Majors as a luckless stuntman who investigated crimes on the side (a formula that dominated TV of that era). That project never happened, and it appears to have fallen deeply out of development, but the premise of a movie about a stuntman is still relevant (and indeed, it s what half of last year s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was about). This week, after a heated auction, Universal Pictures has landed the rights to an untitled Hollywood stuntman action drama project that has Ryan Gosling attached to star for director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw). Leitch is himself a former stuntman and stunt coordinator, and Ryan Gosling has already played a stuntman in two previous films (Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines). In their coverage of the deal, The Hollywood Reporter leans heavily into comparisons to The Fall Guy and Hollywood s long interest in a Fall Guy movie, but at this point, there seems to be no confirmation that the movie actually is an adaptation of that TV show. Other studios that bid against Universal Pictures included MGM, Paramount, and Netflix.Other Top Headlines1. BOTH BLACK WIDOW AND WEST SIDE STORY NOW DELAYED UNTIL 2021 (Photo by Marvel Studios)There are still some major movies scheduled for theatrical releases in the next few months (including No Time to Die, Pixar s Soul, Dune, and Wonder Woman 1984), but this week, Walt Disney Pictures made big changes regarding several of their upcoming films, delaying more of their most anticipated titles. Marvel Studios first return to the MCU post Avengers: Endgame will be the prequel Black Widow, which is now scheduled for May 7, 2021 after originally being dated for May 1, 2020 and then more recently, November 6, 2020. This shift means that other Marvel movies are also being bumped back, starting with Eternals (now 11/5/2021) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (now 7/9/2021). Disney also pushed back Steven Spielberg s remake of West Side Story almost a full year from December 18, 2020 to December 10, 2021. In an interesting turn of events, that means that Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights (6/18/2021) is effectively opening before West Side Story again after it was rescheduled from its original June 26, 2020 release date earlier this year. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to impact the movie release calendar, and these changes likely won t be the last, so stay tuned for more updates.2. WONG KAR-WAI NOW WORKING ON SEQUEL TO 1994 CLASSIC CHUNGKING EXPRESS (Photo by Everett Collection)When Bong Joon-ho won big at this year s Academy Awards for Parasite, including Best Picture, it shed some light on other acclaimed international filmmakers who in the past mostly had to settle for the Foreign Film category. One such director who has shockingly never been nominated for an Academy Award is Wong Kar-wai, whose filmography includes Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, and the 1996 arthouse hit Chungking Express (Certified Fresh at 87%). That film might seem like an odd choice to receive a sequel some 26+ years later, but according to Chinese authorities, that s apparently exactly what Wong Kar-wai has planned, as he has submitted a screenplay called Chungking Express 2020 that the Chinese government has approved to move into production. The plot summary offered in the filing is curious, as it first recounts the story of Chungking Express, which followed two separate stories involving police officers, and then describes a new scenario that takes place in the future: In 2036, young Xiao Qian and May are unwilling to be held back by genetic partnerings, and insist on finding their own destiny.' It remains unclear if the new film will revisit the two stories of the first movie in some way.3. TIFFANY HADDISH JOINS NICOLAS CAGE META-COMEDY(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Production will soon begin on the Lionsgate action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Nicolas Cage will play a fictionalized version of himself. The premise of the movie follows Cage as he accepts a million-dollar offer from a wealthy super-fan (played by Pedro Pascal) that leads to Cage being forced to re-enact some of his most popular classic movie scenes. This week, we found out who will be joining Pascal as another fictional character, as Tiffany Haddish has signed on to co-star in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as an eccentric rogue government agent who forces superstar Nicolas Cage to go undercover in a crazy, off-book, last-ditch effort to bring one of the largest criminal organizations in Europe down for good. It s unclear if this undercover assignment is part of the main storyline involving Pedro Pascal s character, or perhaps a b-story elsewhere in the movie (but it s probably the former).4. RON HOWARD TO DIRECT BIOPIC ABOUT CHINESE PIANIST SUPERSTAR LANG LANG (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Universal Pictures)Chinese pianist Lang Lang is only 38 years old, but he has already received an international reception more typical of a classical musician twice his age. He s also apparently impressed many within Hollywood s upper echelons, because Ron Howard has signed on to direct an untitled Lang Lang biopic to be based on his memoir, Journey of a Thousand Miles. The planned biopic will depict Lang s journey from a childhood in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang to fame both in China and across the entire world. It s not yet known if Howard or his producing partners plan on casting Lang to play himself. In a statement about the film s announcement, Lang Lang said, Dream big, work hard, and always believe in yourself. This movie, thanks to Ron Howard’s vision, will inspire young people around the world to follow their dreams and never forget they are one in a million. 5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE X TRIP OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Hollywood may move at its own languid pace, but it s nothing compared to the last few decades of manned space exploration, which seems to have drastically slowed down following the amazing speed at which it developed in the 1960s and 1970s. One of the most surprising movie announcements of 2020 thus far came in May when Tom Cruise announced his plans to become the first movie star to actually film scenes for a major Hollywood production in outer space himself. This project got one step closer to actually happening this week as the official Twitter account for Space Shuttle Almanac formally added Tom Cruise s outer space project to their list of planned missions. Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria will pilot a Space X Crew Dragon Axiom Tourist FLight in October, 2021 with Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman (American Made, Edge of Tomorrow) aboard, presumably with at least one other crew member to aid in whatever they have planned to film in space. There is no release date (or title) for Tom Cruise s space movie yet, but given the late 2021 filming, we can probably expect it sometime in 2022 or perhaps 2023.6. EVA LONGORIA IS READY (TO DIRECT) A NICE LONG SPA DAY(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After her long run on the hit ABC dramedy series Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria has increasingly turned her attention towards a new career as producer and director, including several TV shows and plans for the Flamin Hot Cheetos movie (seriously). That film could eventually become Longoria s directorial debut feature, but with pandemic delays wreaking havoc on production schedules, it s anyone s guess when that movie will even be released. In the meantime, Longoria added another movie to her possible future filmography this week, signing on with Sony Pictures to star in, produce, and direct a female ensemble action comedy called Spa Day. The premise is being kept secret for now, but it s pretty easy to imagine what it will be like based on just the title, the genres, and the star and director. We ve all seen movies.7. LONG-RUNNING SONY VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE YAKUZA GETTING ITS OWN MOVIE(Photo by Sega)This story is ostensibly about the long-running Yazuka video game franchise, but let s start by remembering another similar video game. Shenmue was a 1999 game for the Sega Dreamcast set in the world of 1980s Japanese crime gangs (and martial arts), but the reason it s particularly relevant here is that, in 2001, the cut scenes for the game were packaged together as Shenmue: The Movie. Fast forward twenty years, and it s easy to argue that many video games could be adapted as movies that way (it would probably be a lot cheaper too). The Yakuza games also published by Sega are increasingly cinematic in that way, but this week s news of plans for a Yakuza movie describe the film as live action.  Yakuza is Sega s second best-selling franchise after Sonic the Hedgehog, who made his super speed jump to the movies earlier this year, so it makes sense that the game publisher is now turning its attention towards getting a Yakuza movie produced as well. Variety describes the first Yakuza game this way: Kazuma Kiryu [is] released from a 10-year prison sentence after taking the fall for the murder of his family’s patriarch, [and as] the entire Japanese underworld is pulled into the search for 0 million stolen from the vault of his former clan, Kiryu is forced back into the lawless world of the Yakuza. 8. UNIVERSAL TO TRY OUT FANCY NEW TECHNOLOGY WITH ICE CUBE SCI-FI MOVIE (Photo by Bob Mahoney/©Warner Bros.)The old school studio system of classic Hollywood may have gone away decades ago, but we do still see today movie stars who have strong relationships with specific studios. Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube, for example, starred in Universal s Ride Along (Rotten at 18%) and its sequel (Rotten at 13%), as well as the upcoming Flint Strong boxing biopic. Ice Cube is now signed to reunite with Universal Pictures on an untitled grounded science fiction project to be directed by frequent music video director Rich Lee. The premise hasn t been revealed yet, except that it was compared to District 9, and the focus right now appears to be on the new screen capture technology that producer Timur Bekmambetov is bringing to the project.9. NEXT FATHER OF THE BRIDE REMAKE TO FOCUS ON LATINX FAMILY (Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Every once in a while in Hollywood s history, there will be a remake so beloved that it s actually more famous than the original John Carpenter s The Thing is a frequently cited example of that. Another remake that seems to have gone on to overshadow the legacy of the original movie is 1991 s Father of the Bride (Fresh at 70%), starring Steve Martin, which was actually a remake of the 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. We re getting another reminder of the remake s enduring popularity soon, as Netflix this week released the trailer for a special called Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), which promises to reunite franchise stars like Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. We also learned this week that Warner Bros. has plans for another Father of the Bride remake, this time revolving around a Latinx family as a father deals with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. This new version is also being described as more of a rom-com than previous versions of the film. Screenwriter Matt Lopez, who has previously worked on other remakes like Disney s Race to Witch Mountain (Rotten at 43%) and The Sorcerer s Apprentice (Rotten at 40%) was reportedly influenced by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended. Ghcxuf (Photo by Courtesy the Cannes Film Festival)The crowds have bid au revoir  to the 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival, where films about inequality and injustice, as well as some avant-garde horror, riveted audiences. This year s jury, led by Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu, bestowed the golden laurels of the Palme d Or (the festival s top prize) on Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho s Parasite. Joon-ho s Palme d Or win for his twisty social satire follows Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda s 2018 win for Shoplifters, making him the third Asian director to take home the top prize and the first Korean filmmaker. The runner-up prize, the Grand Prix, also made history when actress-turned-director Mati Diop won for her debut film Atlantique, becoming the first Black female director to be awarded a competition prize. (It was a second coup for Diop, who made history when she became the first Black female director to be selected in competition).Elsewhere, our rumored next Batman, Robert Pattinson, continued his run of stellar indie performances and sparked early Oscar talk for his turn alongside co-star Willem Dafoe in the black-and-white horror tale, The Lighthouse. It was one of several films that critics are betting will make a deep run this awards season, along with Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Rocketman, and Pedro Almodóvar s Pain and Glory, for which Antonio Banderas was named best actor. Here are the seven buzziest films we saw at Cannes 2019; you’ll definitely want to check them out when they reach theaters near you or land on streaming.Atlantics (2019) 95% 😈😈

亚博网页版注册 How well do one-time rom-com kings Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Grant know their own movies – and what the critics thought of them? Very well, it turns out. In our latest game of Name the Review, the two stars of Guy Ritchie s new gangster flick The Gentlemen face their critics and come out on top. The concept is simple: Each actor reads the other a line from a review of one of their films, then they have to guess the movie being referenced. In which film did McConaughey s facial hair give a stellar performance, according to one review? And which of Grant s movies was so good it s still at 100% on the Tomatometer? Find out in the video above, and be sure to play along – Grant s excellent charades skills will help you through. The Gentlemen is in theaters everywhere January 24, 2020.
