(Photo by Clay Enos/©2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)During the summer of the pandemic, Warner Bros. was holding true to the optimism that a partial movie season could be salvaged. They had two of the season s most-anticipated films under their belt – Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984 – and even leaned into the branding that the former s release could be the thing that saved movie theaters from months of shutdown. Though America saw some hope in major cities flattening the curve, it was short-lived and caution continued to influence policy and re-openings. As a result, Disney moved scheduled summer release Mulan to streaming and WB was forced to inch back its releases of Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984.Ultimately, Tenet was released theatrically in August and did as well as one possibly could – especially internationally – when faced with limited venues, scared moviegoers, and a final product that some felt didn t live up to everyone’s lofty expectations. After a few more shifts, WB finally decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day – but then decided to do so both in theaters (where safe) and on its affiliated streaming platform, HBO Max. The announcement of the dual release strategy was a volcanic moment for a debate that has raged since March about whether studios would, could, or should sacrifice potential hundreds of millions of dollars in theatrical revenue for their guaranteed blockbusters by going straight to streaming. Then, two weeks later, WB went one further: It announced it would release its entire 2021 slate simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters – a slate that includes blockbusters like The Suicide Squad, Dune, and In the Heights. Many began to wonder: Was this going to be the way of the future? Were the days of theatrical releasing over? There are still many questions to consider before calling the time for the patient on the table, we think, and here are some of the most pertinent – and what you should know about them. Will Other Studios Follow In Warner Bros Footsteps?(Photo by Chiabella James/Warner Bros. Entertainment)Others studios have been exploring different release models since this mess officially kicked into gear nine months ago. Universal got the ball rolling with a temp fix, helping to ease a little parental stress by sticking with its Trolls World Tour release date, only to move it to streaming services for a price. After initial pushback from AMC Theatres about the movie, they eventually worked out a longer-term deal where the length of commitment of Universal’s films in their locations would be determined on immediate box office success. So, lower-grossing films would be moved to streaming after three weeks, at which time a lower split-profit model with the theaters would kick in; higher-grossing movies would stay.Disney, too, experimented in changing the game with Mulan, but the title s  price tag (comparable to a small family trip to a matinee) on top of the subscription price did not translate into the kind of headline-grabbing total that business and box office analysts would salivate over.So now what? Is Paramount+ going to expand the revamped CBS All Access from television into their feature library? Can Lionsgate Play’s recent soft launch from India make its way over to the States? Would Sony be able to bring “Let’s Crackle and Chill” into the lexicon? Disney’s acquisition of Fox already reduced the number of these questions by one, but so far they have been skittish to move their blue chip titles over to immediate home viewing. Sending Artemis Fowl and The One and Only Ivan to Disney+ felt more like acceptable sacrifices rather than trailblazing. However, the numbers on Pixar’s Soul (now directly competing with Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max over Christmas) could begin to shift Disney’s thinking. Universal’s Peacock service may be the one to watch in the near future. Trolls kicked off the conversation and any commitment from another franchise-heavy studio to simultaneous theatrical/streaming releases would send speculation into overdrive – and there may be officially no way back to the old model. On the other hand…Is a Less-Crowded Marketplace A Great Incentive for Others To Stay in the Theatrical Game?(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Warner Bros. is continuing to utilize theaters for its 2021 slate. But when a single ticket in certain areas will cost more than a monthly subscription to an entire library of content, the incentive to head out – in a still-new (presumably) post-vaccine landscape – may be reduced to the kind of purists who still buy albums. Socially-distanced or streaming-distanced, those who still like getting out and about could still have major event options in their local theater, which may not want to give up more than a single screen for the movies playing at home. A few shifts to the schedule and studios could take advantage of the voids left by The Suicide Squad in the August kickoff slot and Dune in October, the period that WB has recently taken up a bunch of space in with Joker, Gravity, and A Star is Born. The HBO Max partnership may have sent three potential 0 million grossers (Godzilla vs. Kong, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In the Heights) from May-to-July next year, but Universal and Disney still have scheduled Black Widow, Fast Furious 9, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Jungle Cruise in that frame, which could see double or triple those numbers. Again, this is all dependent on the success of the vaccines and the comfort-level of our society. WB bet on this and lost last summer and clearly did not want to again. Will There Be Pushback From Filmmakers?(Photo by © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)Someone who has definitely benefited from the seemingly unlimited pocketbook of the leader in streaming is Martin Scorsese. A three-and-a-half epic such as The Irishman, costing anywhere from 0 million to 0 million, likely would not have gone forward anywhere else but Netflix, and now Apple is backing his latest, Killers of the Flower Moon. Paramount is still slated to distribute the film theatrically, but that is another 0-0 million price tag just as of today. Artists like Scorsese are not nearly as interested in bottom lines as the studios are, especially if he gets to keep working regardless. Will supporters of the theatrical experience as an integral component of cinema be so ready to give it up, though? One cannot imagine Christopher Nolan is on board with Warner Bros. 2021 distribution model. (The studio has distributed seven of his 11 movies.) Many feel the filmmaker s insistence on releasing his work on the biggest screen possible was one of the many reasons the studio felt it had no choice but to put Tenet in theaters (regular and IMAX) first. If WB does stand alone on this for the time being, is that going to hurt their standing with those filmmakers with the power to insist their movies play on something larger than a 55-inch screen? It is highly doubtful that James Cameron has spent 86 years working on the Avatar sequels only to watch Disney potentially shift gears on their event pictures. Can Theaters Offer New Incentives to Get Us In the Door?(Photo by Macall Polay / © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)3-D engaged moviegoers in the 1950s, got a brief, largely lame revival in the 80s. and then generated extra box office in the late 90s and beyond; super-wide Cinemascope was utilized to dazzle home viewers away from their newly-bought television screens into a much grander experience. Today, theaters may have exhausted their technological innovations – and no one is making a special trip to have their seats vibrate with the noise. So they may be down to the best possible innovation of all in a post-pandemic world: savings. Depending on the theater chain, a trip to the movies for a family these days can feel like one to a professional ball game. MoviePass was a fun, if financially irrational, experiment that benefited weekly attendees. Would local theaters be able to manifest something comparable that would encourage movie fans to offer a bigger, traditional night out that will not have them weighing the savings versus a monthly subscription cost? More importantly, can they do it without being subjected to the ire of studios who feels themselves losing out on the scraps they may still be providing to the theaters if discounts, punch cards, and 2-for-1 specials become necessary.Could Sneak Previews Make a Big Comeback?(Photo by © Warner Bros. )You may be revealing your age if you do not remember the practice of sneak previews. It actually was not that long ago and many faces would light up at the prospect of seeing a commercial or newspaper ad revealing that the movie they could not wait to see would not make me wait any longer with a one-time showing on Saturday night. Imagine you are just a week away from seeing Dune or Matrix 4, and WB announces that you can see them in theaters – for one night only – before the official launch. Would there be a flock comparable to recent Amazon sneak preview events like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Aquaman, which netted around million each, or Fandango s high-selling Early Access screening series? Films good enough to generate ecstatic word-of-mouth could certainly encourage more fans to rally around the big screens for their first viewing – and potentially discover the incentives theaters may develop to bring them back. Finally, Could Warner Bros. Reverse Course?(Photo by © Warner Bros. )The streaming of Universal s Trolls World Tour was a big success early in our pandemic times; six weeks later, Scoob! failed to replicate it. Tenet tried to correct the blockbuster drought in theaters, but did not live up to Warner Bros.’ hopes, and eventually Wonder Woman 1984 comes home without the restraint of a separate Mulan surcharge. The world is not out of the woods yet and while vaccines provide optimism, there are still so many unanswered questions. Who knows what the future will hold between now and the still-scheduled summer movie season slated to kickoff in May with Marvel’s Black Widow? If Disney holds course and we see a 0 million box office report on May 9, will WB consider delaying premieres of The Suicide Squad and Dune on HBO Max? It seems unlikely that the entire strategy would be abandoned in 2021 after all the headlines it has generated. That may also depend on how quickly other studios jump at the chance to make some of their own. Everything is an experimentation at this point, with various parties considering and even rooting for success or failure. Jumping right to a half-empty conclusion is premature though there is no reason not to prepare for all possibilities.Erik Childress can be heard each week evaluating box office on WGN Radio with Nick Digilio as well as on Business First AM with Angela Miles and his Movie Madness Podcast. On an Apple device? 3. 激战团竞模式
(Photo by DC Comics)The Premise: A look at the day-to-day lives of the Neopolis Police Department’s 10th Precinct. In many ways, it resembles the venerable 1980s cop drama Hill Street Blues – except for the fact all the cops are superheroes in a world where almost everyone has a power and a costumed identity. Across the 12 issues and one hardcover special written by Moore, the series heavily featured detective Jeff Smax and his new partner Toybox. Of course, stories of other police officers and cases filtered throughout, even as it culminated in an overarching tale of government corruption. The Approach: If one chose to ignore the larger story developed across Moore s 12-issue run, it is very easy to see the program as its initial pitch: Hill Street Blues in a world of superheroes. Unlike, say, Sony’s adaptation of Powers, Top 10 would need the prestige budget to pull off the world as designed by artists Gene Ha and Zander Cannon; it’s stuffed to the margins with amazing-looking superheroes who flutter by for only an instant. Then there are the major characters like Smax, Dust Devil, and Sergeant Hyperdog to consider. They would be expensive to translate to live-action.But a point of departure from the comics could come from leaning even further in to the Hill Street Blues format, which burned its ongoing dramas slowly while favoring cases of the week. The format has served Law Order: Special Victims Unit well for 20 years and would give Top 10 enough of an engine to run five or so seasons as a prestige drama on a streaming service. From Hell As A Gritty and Complex Limited Series(Photo by Penguin Random House)The Premise: Inspector Frederick Abberline and charlatan psychic Robert James Lee investigate the vicious murders of sex workers in the Whitechapel district of London. The sensational details of the murders grab the attention of the Fleet Street papers, which leads the killer to write in and to the introduction of his legendary sobriquet: Jack the Ripper. Meanwhile, Royal Physician and Freemason Sir William Gull accepts an assignment from Queen Victoria to end the threat of an illegitimate heir via her grandson Albert marrying a commoner girl from the East End. He is also ordered to silence a group of sex workers who know the truth and attempt to blackmail one of the conspirators. The mission gives Gull the chance perform an obscure rite that will both solidify male dominance over women and, as he sees it, birth the 20th century. The Approach: Honestly, a direct adaptation would serve From Hell the best. The film version, directed by Albert and Allen Hughes, abandoned Moore’s compelling “why-dunit” narrative almost entirely in favor of the traditional “whodunit” seen in most Jack the Ripper movies. The text of From Hell (brilliantly realized by the great Eddie Campbell) leads readers down more sinister allies of government conspiracies, into the mysticism hidden in the layout of London, and even gives us a bit of time travel. It also features some striking characters in the form of Marie Kelly, Abberline, and Lee – to say nothing of Gull himself, who Moore and Campbell bring to such vivid life.Unlike some of the other Moore comics on this list, though, From Hell could only arrive on television as an eight-episode limited series. Both the story and its construction require the tight confines of the TV format, just like the original comics themselves.Miracleman As Prestige Drama With Big Names(Photo by Marvel)The Premise: By saying the word “Kimota!”, Michael Moran transforms into Miracleman – a character not unlike Shazam. Losing about a decade to a perceived amnesia, Moran eventually learns his time as Miracleman was a simulation orchestrated by the British government. It leads to conflict with fellow test subject Johnny Bates, who destroys the center of London and kills some 40,000 people. In the wake of their devastating battle, Miracleman is revealed to the world and decides to do the only sensible thing left to him: take over the planet and run it himself. The Approach: Mircaleman – also known as Marvelman in the U.K. – may lend itself the most to a Watchmen-style reinvention. In fact, writer Neil Gaiman and artist Mark Buckingham already did a lot of the development of the concept when they took over Miracleman from Moore and his collaborators. In their “Golden Age” storyline, Gaiman and Buckingham revealed a world under stress from the utopia built by Miracleman. The individual issues told tales of regular people chaffing against that fantastic world, removing Moran from the center of the action to a seemingly distant force. That concept would allow for a prestige drama about real people coping with an unwanted occupation. And like Watchmen, it would leave the text of the Moore stories as its history. Such a series could also find a way to finish up Gaiman and Buckingham’s abandoned “Silver Age” story, which was to see the return of Bates and reveal larger cracks in Miracleman s brave new world.Like the other Moore comics we’ve discussed so far, the idea fits snugly into the realm of prestige dramas on streaming services, meaning it would need a low episode count and a cadre of impressive actors to breathe life into its world.Tom Strong As High-End Animated Series(Photo by DC Comics)The Premise: Science hero Tom Strong – a spin on pulp adventurers like Doc Savage – his wife Dhalua, and their daughter Tesla, explore the world and battle science villains with the aid of steam-powered robot Pneuman and super-smart gorilla King Solomon. Along the way, luxurious flashbacks told in the style of older comics reveal Strong’s origins and other adventures from his long life. The Approach: The whimsical and good-hearted nature of the original Tom Strong series by Moore and artist Chris Sprouse lends itself best to an animated series. Of course, a high-end series with great animation and an absurd attention to details. The format allows the potential series to keep Sprouse’s design aesthetic while also seamlessly switching to other art or animation styles as the story dictates. It also means the program could keep the decidedly un-Watchmen feel of the comic. Designed in many respects to pull away from Moore’s tendency to deconstruct genre, Tom Strong is a character whose seeming simplicity calls for the sort of complexity one can find in the best animated tales.Captain Britain As A Disney+ Original(Photo by Marvel Comics)The Premise: A member of the lower aristocracy, Brian Braddock comes upon his powers when Merlyn (who claims to be the wizard of the Arthur legend) and his daughter Roma save him from a bad bike accident. Accepting the Amulet of Might, Brian is suffused with energy and becomes the Captain Britain of Earth-616, the main Earth of the Marvel Multiverse. Facing a gaggle of homegrown threats and inter-dimensional crises, Brian also attempts to keep up with his studies at university. When Moore and artist Alan Davis took over the character, they introduced characters like the time-traveling mercs known as the Special Executive and a superhero-slaying monster called The Fury. He and Davis also introduced the notion of the Marvel Multi-verse itself and even the Earth-616 designation. The Approach: Clearly, this is a Disney+ series waiting to happen. With its close ties to the multi-verse, it could serve as a way to explore those ideas – to say nothing of introducing different Marvel Earths – while also telling a very localized story about a British hero with deep roots in the country’s own mythology and history. Merlyn’s participation also gives such a show a mystical element not seen in the other Disney+ projects announced thus far. Also, with Captain Britain’s ties to the X-Men (his sister is the telepathic mutant formerly known as Psylocke), the series could also slyly introduce those characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All that said, this may be the one concept so removed from Moore’s spirit that it may not be much of a sacrilege to bring it to the screen. Also, since we were fans of the Excalibur comic by Chris Claremont and Davis, we just want the character to make his MCU debut.Like this?
This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Aquaman 2, Indiana Jones 5, and The Toxic Avenger. This WEEK S TOP STORYHISTORIC CINERAMA DOME THEATER IN LOS ANGELES SHUTTING DOWN(Photo by Genaro Molina/Getty Images)As COVID-19 vaccines continue to roll out, many states are currently lifting restrictions on movie theaters, as the film exhibition industry attempts to recover from what was basically a missing year. That return to normalcy faced a drastic road block in the western states this week as the Arclight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres chains announced that they will not be re-opening. This shut down includes the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard, which has been a Hollywood landmark since its opening in 1963, including an appearance in Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in which the movie being shown was Krakatoa, East of Java. Filmmakers (including Roland Emmerich, Barry Jenkins, and Rian Johnson), movie stars, and fans alike have been voicing their support this week, including some posting sentiments like Netflix, You Know What to Do. This decision to close all ArcLight and Pacific locations comes just a month before movies like A Quiet Place Part II and Disney s Cruella are expected to finally get the summer season of 2021 going at the box office. There is also a Change.org petition currently running that has over 11,000 signatures. If there is a positive side, it s that people seem to be motivated to make sure that at least landmarks like the Cinerama Dome will be saved by someone  anyone  and to make sure that this shutdown isn t repeated at other beloved theater chains.Other Top Headlines1. HUGH JACKMAN AND LAURA DERN JOIN THE SON, THEMATIC SEQUEL TO THE FATHER (Photo by Kristin Callahan, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)One of the quiet underdogs in this year s Academy Awards race is The Father (Certified Fresh at 98%), which perhaps surprisingly earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, and Best Supporting Actress for Olivia Colman. French novelist, screenwriter, and director Florian Zeller adapted The Father from his own play, Le Père, and Zeller is now preparing to start filming the thematic follow-up to that film, which is intended to eventually be the second film of a trilogy. Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern are now signed to star in The Son, which is then expected to be followed by a third film, The Mother. Jackman will star in The Son as a busy man whose life is is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife, Kate (Dern), turns up with their troubled and angry teenage son. The key role of the son has apparently not been cast yet.2. MADS MIKKELSEN JOINS HARRISON FORD IN INDIANA JONES 5 (Photo by Jonathan Olley/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Despite being in some form of development for much of the 10+ years since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crysal Skull ( Certified Fresh at 78%), we still do not know the premise or setting of the untitled fifth Indiana Jones film, due out July 29, 2022. Last week, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge became the first actor to join Harrison Ford in an unknown role (perhaps as his daughter, or Marian s daughter?), and director James Mangold (Logan, The Wolverine, Ford v Ferrari) has now added another cast member. Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, who genre fans might best know as either the Doctor Strange villain Kaecilius or for playing Jyn Erso s dad in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has likewise joined Indiana Jones 5 in an unknown role. With two new actors announced, this might be a good time to point out that there have been no announcements yet of any other returning cast besides Harrison Ford. For example, at one point, Shia LaBeouf s character from Crystal Skull was expected to possibly be Harrison Ford s replacement in the franchise, but recent developments may have changed those plans.3. CATE BLANCHETT TO STAR IN ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR S FIRST FILM IN 15 YEARS (Photo by Lisa Tomasetti/©Sony Pictures Classics)If you re not someone who actively attempts to follow every director s career, you might be forgiven if it takes a moment to remember what you know actor-turned-director Todd Field from. Field has  only directed two films, but both were critically acclaimed, with 2001 s In the Bedroom (Certified Fresh at 93%) receiving five Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture), and 2006 s Little Children ( Certified Fresh at 80%) earning three. Field is now preparing to direct his first film in 15 years, TAR, and he has recruited Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett to star in the film, which in a way echoes Field s casting of Sissy Spacek in In the Bedroom and Kate Winslet in Little Children. The premise of TAR is being kept secret, except that it s set in Berlin, and that filming will start there in September. Blanchett will be moving on to TAR after starring in the video game adaptation Borderlands (and as of yet, she isn t expected to be reprising her role in Indiana Jones 5).4. GAME OF THRONES BADDIE PILOU ASBAEK JOINS AQUAMAN 2 (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Danish actor Pilou Asbaek is probably not what you d call a household name for most, but if you live with Game of Thrones fans, they probably would recognize him for his villainous role as Euron Greyjoy in the later seasons. Perhaps coincidentally, Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones was a leader of house of seafaring pirates and raiders, so it s interesting that his new role this week is  in Aquaman 2, which stars another Game of Thrones alumnus, Jason Momoa. Warner Bros. did not comment on Asbaek s casting, including any indication about what character he might be playing, but Aquaman s comic book history has plenty of seafaring characters Asbaek could portray. Warner Bros. has scheduled Aquaman  2 for December 16, 2022, making it the fifth DC Comics movie of that year, following The Batman (3/4/2022), the animated DC Super Pets (5/20/2022), Black Adam (7/29/2022), and The Flash (11/4/2022).5. LUCY LIU TO PLAY HELEN MIRREN S SISTER IN SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS (Photo by Michael Germana/Everett Collection)The title of the sequel to the 2019 DC Comics movie Shazam! (Certified Fresh at 90%) is Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and it appears that the plurality of the Gods in question means we may possibly see several big names in the film. The first star to be announced was Helen Mirren, who will be playing the villain Hespera, the daughter of Atlas (one of the Gods who forms the S-H-A-Z-A-M of his name). We can now also report that Mirren will be joined by Lucy Liu, who will play Hespera s sister Kalypso (who should not be confused with the Marvel Comics villain Calypso). Neither Hespera nor Kalypso have comic book counterparts, but their relation to Atlas, who gives Shazam! his super stamina, seems like the obvious connection here.6. BRAD PITT AND SANDRA BULLOCK SWAP CAMEOS IN EACH OTHER S MOVIES (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Sometimes when we look back at announcements about big movie stars being in a new film, it turns out that it was just a cameo (for example, Matt Damon co-starring in Thor: Ragnarok). One cameo might not be enough to cover in The Weekly Ketchup, but this week, we have the fun story of two stars who basically gave each other cameo appearances. Brad Pitt recently filmed an action thriller called Bullet Train, and Sandra Bullock is about to star in the romantic comedy adventure Lost City of D with Channing Tatum. As it turns out, both stars will show up in each other s films in cameo roles. Sandra Bullock will make a brief appearance in Bullet Train, and Brad Pitt will do the same in Lost City of D.7. THIS WEEK IN MOVIES CALLED (OR PREVIOUSLY CALLED) MEMORY (Photo by Maria Marin/©Sony Classics)We re going to cover two separate movies in this piece, because both movies share the title Memory (sort of). Let s start with the movie actually titled Memory, which will be an action thriller starring Liam Neeson, Guy Pearce, and Monica Bellucci. The premise sounds a bit like a John Wick movie, as Neeson will play an assassin who finds himself a target after refusing to carry out a dangerous mission for the mob. In related news, Ryan Gosling s upcoming film noir thriller The Actor (which is adapted from the Donald E. Westlake novel Memory) landed distribution this week through Neon, with acclaimed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman on board as executive producer.8. BARB AND STAR TO WRITE CINDERELLA STEPSISTERS FEATURE FOR DISNEY (Photo by Ferdaus Shamim/Getty Images)In addition to fairly straight adaptations like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, Walt Disney Pictuires has also included spin-offs about classic villains like Maleficent and Cruella in their continuing live-action remakes of classic Disney animated films. Walt Disney Pictures already gave this sort of treatment to Cinderella (Certified Fresh at 83%) in 2013, but the studio now appears ready to return to the setting. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are now signed with Disney to write a live-action feature film about Cinderella s evil stepsisters (possibly not involving Cinderella at all, or perhaps as just a minor character). Wiig and Mumolo, who co-starred in both Bridesmaids (Certified Fresh at 90%) and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (Certified Fresh at 79%), both of which they also co-wrote, are not expected to appear in this film. It s also not yet known if any of the cast of the 2013 Cinderella will reprise their roles, including Sophie McShera as Drizella and Holliday Grainger as Anastasia, as it seems likely that this film will have an entirely new cast.9. JACOB TREMBLAY JOINS PETER DINKLAGE IN TOXIC AVENGER REBOOT (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)We ve known for a while that Peter Dinklage is going to star in the big-budget remake of the ultra-low-budget Troma film The Toxic Avenger, but this week s news gave us a new hint about exactly how different this version of The Toxic Avenger might be. The second cast member confirmed to star in The Toxic Avenger is Jacob Tremblay (Room), who is now 14, with the suggestion in this news item that he might be playing Toxie s son, who the Toxic Avenger must race to rescue as he learns how to use his newfound chemically endowed size and strength. The reason this is a pretty major departure is that in the original film, Melvin, the janitor who becomes The Toxic Avenger, did not have a son and was basically a much-maligned social outcast. Jacob Tremblay will also soon be heard (but probably not seen) as the voice of Flounder in Disney s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey. On an Apple device? 亚博网手机下载 The original title of Freaky Friday the 13th says all you need to know about the premise behind Freaky: it’s a body-swap comedy crossed with a slasher film.” And the fact that it’s directed and co-written by Christopher Landon, who mashed up the slasher genre with time-loop sci-fi for Happy Death Day and its sequel, should tell you if you’ll be down with the tone of his latest. However, the first reviews out of the gate stress that the R-rated Freaky is better in the horror department, particularly with its kills, and yet still has more heart than expected as well. Plus, the movie has some memorably hilarious and scary performances from Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton as the two leads who wind up with each other’s roles. Here’s what critics are saying about Freaky:Will it satisfy fans of slasher horror?Freaky is easily one of the best supernatural slashers to come along in this era of modern horror.  Heather Wixson, Daily DeadIt’s the biggest game-changer on the slasher scene since Scream.  Michael Gingold, Rue Morgue MagazineThe slasher genre is ready to return in the 21st century with a caustic vengeance. And I’m here for it.  Terry Mesnard, Gayly DreadfulThe movie has set-pieces that might become genre fan favorites.  Simon Thompson, IGNIt’s an out and out blast that finds Landon inching closer and closer to slasher masters like Craven and Carpenter.  Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundDoes it feature good kills?Freaky ensures every death counts, delivering maximum gore or a creative demise. In short, it earns its R-rating. Meagan Navarro, Bloody DisgustingFreaky earns its R-rating, delivering an ample body count and some innovative kills that elicit laughs as much as they do shock. Simon Thompson, IGNSome of the kills [are] so gruesome they almost push the limits of its hard-R rating, with a brilliant table saw kill the highlight of the film. Chris Bumbray, JoBloThe kills are universally juicy. Michael Rougeau, GameSpotI wouldn’t say that there’s anything so hugely or creatively game-changing, but they do all play well and also appropriately lean into the horror-comedy of it all. Perri Nemiroff, Perri Nemiroff(Photo by Blumhouse Productions)How effective is the body-swap theme?Freaky s gimmick, thankfully, never wears thin. Matt Donato, What to Watch[It’s] so much better than an elevator pitch of The Hot Chick Meets Jason would suggest. Terry Mesnard, Gayly DreadfulUsing the formula in a slasher comedy instantly establishes a bottomless well of potential, but very little of it makes it to the screen in Freaky. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendUnfortunately, Freaky s fun premise is tripped up by clunky writing, and the performances from its two talented leads are completely inconsistent with one another. Michael Rougeau, GameSpotIs it funny? It’ll make you laugh, a lot, and it’ll make you cheer. Meagan Navarro, Bloody DisgustingIt’s hilarious to see Newton struggle with the restrictions of her new body, and yet equally awesome to see her takes names in her killer new duds and moves. Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundI’d wager that Freaky probably leans more towards comedy than it does horror for most of the running time. Chris Bumbray, JoBloDoes it acknowledge its predecessors?Freaky features…a handful of horror references that left me grinning from ear to ear the entire time. Heather Wixson, Daily DeadWhen you start to worry that this will be a love letter in the form of endless references and Easter eggs, Landon and Kennedy quickly give the center stage over to what’s most important: the characters. Meagan Navarro, Bloody DisgustingFreaky throws all sorts of nods against the wall, waiting for one of them to stick and take the movie in an interesting direction. It kind of doesn’t. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlend(Photo by Blumhouse Productions)Does it do anything new for the genre?Freaky is as much a new beginning as it is a love letter to the classics of yesterday. Matt Donato, What to Watch[It] hits all the narrative beats you want from these types of stories, but then also pushes its story into some new directions. Heather Wixson, Daily DeadNot only does [it] pay loving tribute to the famous slashers of horror history, but… distinctively and importantly transplant[s] the slasher into today’s world. Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundIt doesn’t deviate much from the formula… Sometimes there’s comfort in the familiar, and Freaky is a big warm hug. Meagan Navarro, Bloody DisgustingIs it forward-thinking in any other ways? There are some aspects of Freaky that explore sexuality in a very different way than we’ve ever seen in a mainstream horror movie… I wish more films were brazen enough to tackle this topic the way Freaky does. Heather Wixson, Daily DeadThe ways Landon handles sex and sexuality are refreshingly heart-warming and, on occasion, laugh out loud funny. Simon Thompson, IGNThe scene that shines the most is a tender moment between Vaughn’s Millie-possessed body and her love interest, Booker… arguably one of the most important scenes in mainstream horror to date. Not hyperbole. Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundGender swapping is inherently queer and Freaky plays with gender conventions in fun and surprising ways. Terry Mesnard, Gayly Dreadful(Photo by Blumhouse Productions)What else does the movie do right?Freaky is the real deal – a horror comedy with heart. Drew Taylor, ColliderWhat Freaky also manages to do, seemingly effortlessly, is to include humanity and vulnerability to some of the relationships. Simon Thompson, IGNI love that for a movie that nails both the comedic and genre aspects so well, it also takes the time to get us invested in these characters on an emotional level. Heather Wixson, Daily DeadComposer Bear McCreary brings home the bacon when it comes to Freaky s score, which drives the movie forward with urgency and confidence. Simon Thompson, IGNFor McCreary’s part, his ability to switch vibes on a dime, all with the simple change of a tune, is not to be taken lightly. Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundHow is Vince Vaughn as Kathryn Newton?Vaughn’s performance is…miraculous. Drew Taylor, Collider[His performance] genuinely makes you wonder if this is the most fun he s had with a role for well over a decade… Vaughn is back in a big way. Simon Thompson, IGNHe uses his oft-forgotten pure physicality to be intimidating and frightening when playing the Butcher, but ably captures the essence of a teenage girl without playing into stereotypes or generalizations. Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundAnd what about Kathryn Newton?Newton does ‘scary’ very well. Heather Wixson, Daily DeadShe is so much fun to watch playing a serial killer. Perri Nemiroff, Perri NemiroffNewton gives a fantastic psychotic edge as the Butcher trapped in a young woman’s body. Watching her give comeuppance to all the sexual harassers is wholly satisfying. Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting(Photo by Blumhouse Productions)Does the movie stick the landing? It overstays its welcome for a forced girl-power conclusion that pushes the already thin credibility of the concept past its breaking point. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendThe ending is something of an anti-climax considering the build-up to it. Simon Thompson, IGNWill audiences have a good time?Freaky is one of the most entertaining films of the year. Simon Thompson, IGNIf you need ninety minutes of escapism you can’t do better than this. Chris Bumbray, JoBloFreaky is the blood-soaked, heartwarming horror we need right now. Ryan Larson, Consequence of SoundFreaky opens in theaters on November 13, 2020.On an Apple device? Law days with NBC s latest legal drama, Bluff City Law. Whether in series regular roles like NYPD Blue and The West Wing or season arcs on 24: Legacy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Dexter, networks know Smits is the kind of reliable star they want to anchor a new fall show.Bluff City Law is about a father/daughter legal duo who team up to fight injustice. Smits plays Elijah Strait, who reconnects with daughter Sydney (Caitlin McGee) after his wife/her mother’s funeral and convinces her to leave corporate law and join his firm to fight for the very people those companies hurt.Smits told Rotten tomatoes that being back in a courtroom, even a television courtroom with a script, made him realize his TV law was a little rusty.“I remembered a couple of things. Objection!, ” Smits joked. “We’re really fortunate because the technical advisers, consultants have been really great in terms of helping us out with all the procedural stuff. It’s important to me. I’m a stickler on that kind of thing, on any type of thing, whether it’s a cop show [or a lawyer show].”(Photo by NBC)Bluff City Law is the first courtroom drama for McGee, who was glad to have a TV lawyer veteran there to mentor her.“It was called Smits Academy of Law and Order,” McGee said. “Really, the thing that was most useful to me in my research was when we actually got to watch a case and we got to see how performative lawyers have to be and how important it is to keep people engaged and interested in your side of the argument. The case McGee watched was a medical malpractice case where she saw the doctor in question testify on the stand. That just might come in handy for Bluff City Law. So will the jargon.“The whole thing about the jargon, no matter what area it is, it’s part of what we do,” Smits said. “It’s like learning another language almost, right? If you’re playing a doctor, it’s part of the fascinating thing what we do, the research part, whether it’s jargon, the technical aspects of it.”In their first case together, Elijah and Sydney team up against a chemical company whose product they believe caused their client’s cancer.“In terms of the particular case that we were handling, I tried to do the backstory on that and with regards to the real case that it was based on,” Smits said. “Speaking to the people who are the technical advisers on the show, going to cases, it’s all part of what we do as actors. That’s the fun part.”(Photo by Paul Gilmore/NBC)Bluff City Law is set and filmed in Memphis, Tennessee, which automatically gives it a different vibe than Los Angeles. Smits says filming any show in 2019 is automatically more advanced too.“Our show looks a lot different and it’s much more cinematic,” Smits said. “That’s not a slight on L.A. Law at all, but it’s really cinematic, and Memphis is a vibrant part of the show. The look is a lot different. You can actually have drone shots, [but] we haven’t had one yet.”Smits also looks back fondly on NYPD Blue, the landmark 90s cop show he joined in season two after David Caruso left.“I was working on the same lot, so I knew when they had written the pilot that it was going to be ground-breaking,” Smits said. “I didn’t know it was going to be the phenomenon that it turned out to be, so it was kind of fortuitous to me it came back around.”(Photo by Jake Giles Netter/NBC)NYPD Blue pushed broadcast standards for language and nudity in order to show what life is really like for policemen and women. Today, a show like that might be on streaming with no restrictions at all.“A show like that, you could not pitch that show to a network [today],” Smits said. “It wouldn’t happen. It just wouldn’t happen. The landscape of television is much more niche-oriented now. Certainly, edgier topic matter is something that we’ve gone for [on Bluff City Law], but I don’t know if you’re going to see naked butts on our show. That’s not going to happen.”McGee was ready to show Sydney’s love life explicitly, though.“You might see a back though, a naked back, maybe some abs,” McGee joked. “Hopefully it’ll be Barry Sloane’s.”Sloane plays Jake Reilly, another lawyer at the Strait firm. Josh Kelly plays Sydney’s ex-husband Robbie, a detective who is still broken-hearted over Sydney. And while the legal drama is one focus of the series, the Straits personal lives will come into play as well.“We established in the first episode what we’re all about, what the firm is about,” McGee said. “We are a legal drama, but once you really get to know these characters you’re just going to want to know more about their personal lives. You’re going to want to meet their spouses, their exes, see their homes. You’ll definitely get to see more of that.”(Photo by NBC)That, said Smits, will make the legal cases even more compelling.“I think that the audiences will engage more in the legal aspects of the show once they know all of the little character traits that each one of the characters has,” he said.Bluff City Law premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. on NBC.

King of the Crop: Fantastic Beasts Wins Weekend But Signals Trouble Ahead(Photo by Warner Bros)Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald topped the box office this weekend easily, but that s about the only domestic victory the film can claim. It can’t even boast having the best start of the 2018 holiday season so far, falling behind The Grinch’s .5 million last week. By the time the final estimates come out it may not even be a Top 25 November opening. (However, it’s international numbers are more than solid with a worldwide tally of 3 million just this weekend.)The million opening is the lowest in the entire Harry Potter franchise. The previous low: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them with .4 million. Before that it was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, though that posted the second-highest multiple of the series with a 3.78x.Fantastic Beasts is scheduled to be a five-part series, and critics are bailing on just the second movie. Will audiences? Anything less than 4 million domestic (likely) equals declining territory. And less than 0 million domestic will be a major disappointment for WB. So is it the international haul that truly matters? Like the Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, American audiences may have grown weary, but as long coffers fill overseas, we will see more of them yet.Rotten Returns: Instant Family Continues Streak of Mark Wahlbombs(Photo by Paramount)Paramount got strong reviews from critics for Mark Wahlberg-starring Instant Family, but the million production from Sean Anders did not have that sweet Daddy’s Home connection with Will Ferrell. Confident that audiences would be looking for a potential feel-good film for the holidays, the studio moved the film up from February into this weekend and was rewarded with just .5 million. Since 1990 there have been a dozen films that have started between .7-.7 million, and only three of them have reached million: The Jackal (1997), Horrible Bosses 2, and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, which benefited from an awards run. If word-of-mouth cannot build Instant Family this will go down as the seventh straight film that Mark Wahlberg has headlined that has ended up on the losing side of its budget. Steve McQueen’s Widows seemingly is in the same boat as Instant Family with just a .3 million opening and million budget. But as a potential awards player, there is a room for longevity.Top Ten and Beyond: Grinch Eyes Seasonal High, No Box Office Rhapsody For Adult Fare(Photo by © 20th Century Fox)Illumination’s animated adaptation of The Grinch finds itself in a pretty good position, pulling ahead of The Lorax (also from Illumination) with a 10-day gross of 6.5 million. That puts The Grinch at a total end estimate in the 0-0 million range. Meanwhile, another box office song going on: Bohemian Rhapsody, which looks to end in 0 million range. It is over 4 million worldwide to date, making the film a tremendous success for Fox.Non-Grinch, not-Queen movies have less to sing about. With respective budgets of and million, Overlord and The Girl In the Spider s Web are at a mere .7 and .2 million. The new Dragon Tattoo Story is only at million worldwide. Overlord is not much better at million, but it is safe to say we have have seen the last of Lisbeth Salander on the big screen. Disney and theaters are bailing fast on another overpriced failure: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ( million domestic, 6 million worldwide against a0 million budget), which vanished from over 1,100 theaters in just its third weekend.Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate had the best per-theater-average of the weekend, with ,000 in four theaters, though it is not much of a number to crow about. Another awards hopeful, Green Book, played 25 theaters, driving up 2k before it will expand into over 1,000 on Wednesday. For the MST3kers out there, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie opened in 26 theaters to 6k. (Enjoy the new season on Netflix this Wednesday!)
