(Photo by Ryan Green /© Universal Pictures)Turn that Jack-o -lantern frown upside down because the studio that brought us Paranormal Activity, The Invisible Man, and is spearheading Universal’s reimagined Dark Universe is making a last-minute effort to save what was looking like a bit of a downer Halloween.Enter BlumFest, horror studio Blumhouse’s brand-new fan event for genre fiends, which will drop this Thursday, October 29, at 1pm ET / 10am PT on YouTube.A kind of mini convention for horror fans, BlumFest will feature virtual panels – hosted by Rotten Tomatoes’ own Jacqueline Coley – as well as updates and major news announcements about Blumhouse’s latest and upcoming movie and TV projects.Yes, before you ask, Laurie Strode will be in attendance, with Jamie Lee Curtis joining writer-director David Gordon Green, Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum, and others for a discussion about Halloween Kills, the sequel to 2018’s Certified Fresh Halloween, set to hit theaters in 2021.Other exciting panels include a discussion with Ethan Hawke about his series, The Good Lord Bird, currently the best-reviewed show on the Fall calendar.Looking to dive into stuff you won’t have to wait years to see? Most of the awards pundits agree BlacKkKlansman, Green Book, Roma, and The Favourite are all serious threats in this still wide-open Best Picture race. But after careful consideration, we here at RT have narrowed down our picks for who will win – as well as who should win – in all 24 categories. We looked to our Awards Leaderboard and the Tomatometer for guidance, along with historical voting patterns, the state of the conversation right now, and insights from the Rotten Tomatoes staff which is why our staff predictions in a couple of the categories differ from the recommendations in the video above. Don’t agree with our picks? Let us know in the comments.Follow us on social all day Sunday, February 24th for reactions, and check back with Rotten Tomatoes after the ceremony to hear our take on memorable moments, and the biggest snubs and surprises.

One of the biggest movie franchises on the planet expands outward with Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw. The spin-off stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as their respectively titular characters from the Fast and the Furious series as they reluctantly team up to take on a superhuman villain played by Idris Elba. What ensues is less a F F movie than a silly superhero action movie, according to its first reviews. You mostly get what you expect, plus a standout Vanessa Kirby and surprise cameos, if you’re just interested in dumb popcorn fare. Here’s what critics are saying about Hobbs Shaw:How does it fit in the Fast Furious franchise? The spin-off film is nigh unrecognizable from the gritty low-level crime days of early Fast and Furious, and even the high-stakes heists of the more recent films.  Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmToo sci-fi for the world of Fast Furious… the bionic stuff is anathema to the franchise’s core, meat-based values.  Richard Lawson, Vanity FairIt’s all a little sci-fi for the Fast Furious franchise, though it’s arguably no more ridiculous than launching parachute-sporting cars out of planes.  James Mottram, Total FilmIt’s a Fast Furious movie that doesn’t really care that it’s a part of the franchise.  Germain Lussier, io9What really stands out from this Fast movie is how little help it needs from the franchise for it to work.  Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderDoes it meet expectations otherwise? It delivers some bangs and laughs for your buck.  Peter Bradshaw, GuardianIf you liked Johnson and Statham’s big jailbreak in Fate of the Furious and thought you’d want to see a whole movie of that duo, then you’re in luck. And it’s as awesome as you’d hoped. Edward Douglas, The BeatIt’s not going to change your life but if you are looking for a silly, over-the-top entertainment with very likable leads than there is more than enough to enjoy here. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netI get it, you, the audience, have bought a ticket for the punches and perhaps the punchlines… But do we not deserve better? J. Don Birnam, Splash Report(Photo by Frank Masi / © Universal)How is the chemistry between Johnson and Statham? The back and forth banter between the two of them is hilariously written, and their deadpan delivery is incredible. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentHobbs Shaw is anchored by excellent comedic chemistry between Johnson and Statham, building on their dynamic from the previous film and ensuring laughs are in ample supply. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewJohnson and Statham do have great chemistry and comedically play off each other well. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThe actors always feel like they’re trying to outdo each other. At times, that chemistry works well, but eventually it gets a little repetitive and numbing. Germain Lussier, io9Simultaneously the best and worst parts of the film are Hobbs and Shaw’s arguments… these scenes start to drag once they’ve been going on for over five minutes straight. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmIs Idris Elba a satisfying villain?Idris Elba as the evil Brixton Lorr is phenomenal. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentElba is truly savage throughout in a could’ve-been-Bond performance of action and brute force. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsElba allures through all that relentless cyborg glint, but he nonetheless feels like an unwelcome visitor from a different franchise. Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)Who really owns the movie? For all the hyper-male puffing, Hobbs Shaw is most memorable for the opportunities it gives to Vanessa Kirby. Donald Clarke, Irish TimesIt’s a pleasure to watch Kirby go from cigarette-addled Princess Margaret on The Crown to this commanding bit of action-heroing. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairI was particularly impressed with Kirby, who holds her own. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netWhat I love about the character is that she doesn’t have to sit around and let the men fight for her… her fight scenes are amazing and prove her range as an actress. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentWhat s all this about cameos? Some of the film’s biggest laughs come courtesy of two scene-stealing cameos that we won’t spoil here. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewHas some great surprises for the audience with a few A+ cameos. Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderThese cameos are a delight to stumble upon, and I would suggest you go in not knowing who you’ll see. It adds to the magic of the film. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe film gets weighed down by its self-indulgent excess and distracting cameos from the cast and crew’s best buddies. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by © Universal)This is all that matters: How is the action? The action scenes are where Hobbs Shaw truly excels. Candice Frederick, The WrapThe action in the film is off the charts. Some scenes are sure to leave your jaw on the floor. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentBoasts a chase sequence — featuring a helicopter, a tow truck, and a group of souped-up hot rods — that’s absolutely bonkers. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewThe early action sequences are impressively choreographed but disappointingly limp, delivering none of the bombast that a Hobbs Shaw movie would promise. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmSomewhere around the midpoint of Hobbs Shaw, the action sequences become so elaborate that they start to weigh the movie down. Stephanie Zacharek, TimeIt’s only in the final third when the fight choreography gets a little too incoherent that you realize you don’t give a damn about anything that’s happening. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comIs Hobbs Shaw too cartoonish even for a Fast Furious movie?Hobbs Shaw checks all the boxes for the rousing, over-the-top ludicrousness you’d expect… [but it] tests the limits of that absurdity. Brian Truitt, USA TodayFrom motorcycles that transform and cars that twist in the air, to jumping off buildings and slow-motion fistfights, the whole movie is a cartoon. Germain Lussier, io9It’s basically a cartoon, a machismo-laden thrill ride that borders on parody and is, at times, unspeakably dumb, but in the best possible way. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewIn Fast   Furious, is there really such a thing as too much? James Mottram, Total Film(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)What s really missing here?Without its own identity, without an interesting hook or resonant emotional through-line, most of the movie feels rather shallow — like it’s trying to impress us instead of engage us. Germain Lussier, io9One yearns for the old heart-to-hearts between Diesel and the late Paul Walker…Hobbs  Shaw forgets to maintain the balance of insanity and heart that makes the series special. Brian Truitt, USA TodayBut who needs Oscars anyway, right? When compared to, say, the last five movies to win best picture, there’s a sense that [it’s] doing more to advance film literacy — while bludgeoning all other aspects of our intellect in the process. Peter Debruge, Variety[The Fast Furious movies are] made solely for entertainment purposes, and for the most part, they always deliver. Hobbs Shaw is no exception. Edward Douglas, The BeatFast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw opens in theaters August 2, 2019.

To no one’s surprise, Frozen II led the Thanksgiving holiday with a five-day haul of 6.3 million, with .3 million of that coming over the weekend. That is the eighth-best second weekend of all time, wedged between Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast (.4 million) and, well, Disney’s Incredibles 2 (.34 million). Overall, the film has grossed 7.6 million in 10 days, which is the 15th-best ever for 10 days, between Captain America: Civil War (5.96 million) and The Dark Knight Rises (7.11 million). It is the 25th film to have grossed over 0 million in its first 10 days of release. Only three of those films (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Furious 7, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) failed to reach 0 million total. Amongst the 12 other films to have million-plus second weekends, only one of them (Avengers: Age of Ultron) failed to reach 0 million total. However, only two of those movies opened in the holiday season (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar). Frozen II has already amassed another 1 million worldwide for a total of 8 million as it marches to become another  billion grosser for Disney.Fresh Surprise: Knives Out Shows Original Films Can Still Murder At the Box Office It wasn t a total surprise for us at RT – we had placed it in the top 5 holiday earners in our winter box office preview – but Rian Johnson’s Knives Out surpassed all tracking service expectations by earning .7 million since opening Wednesday. The .7 million it earned over the weekend puts it amongst the top 20 Thanksgiving holiday weekends ever – and it is just the fifth film not rated “G” or “PG” to be on that list. Some 61 films have opened in November and grossed over million in their first five days; only four (Pokemon: The First Movie, Dumb and Dumber To, The Muppets, and Unbreakable) failed to reach at least 0 million total. That means Knives Out could join Hustlers, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Us as the only films not based on a previous film or property to reach that milestone in 2019.The Top 10 and Beyond: Queen and Slim Gets a Solid Start, Word-of-Mouth Boosts Beautiful Day(Photo by © Universal)It was back and forth over the holiday for third place, but James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari won the race with .22 million over the weekend and .99 million for the five days. No film opening in November to have grossed at least million in 17 days has failed to reach 0 million. Ford v Ferrari currently stands at million, but its magic number is still going to be around 0 million globally to find its way into profit. With just over 3 million internationally, it is still less than 60% of the way there.Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood got the word-of-mouth bump over the holiday we were expecting. It is now outpacing Roland Emmerich’s Midway, which just passed the million mark this weekend. Gothika, Starship Troopers, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms are the only November films to have million after 10 days and not finish with at least million. Midway is looking to join that list given its third weekend (.95 million) was less than what those three films earned in their third weekend. Meanwhile, the Mr. Rogers film, which stands at just over million to date, had a better second weekend (.8 million) than any live-action film in November to have million or less by day 10 of wide release (aside from Jingle All the Way). This suggests that a final gross over million is still very possible for the million-budgeted film. The other newbie of the week was Melina Matsoukas’s Certified Fresh Queen Slim, which grossed .7 million over the weekend and .8 million over the full holiday. That is 0,000 more than what Widows had last year in its first five days before ultimately finishing with million. Last week’s cop thriller, 21 Bridges, is up to just .45 million after 10 days, which puts it in After the Sunset/Delivery Man territory. Its second weekend (.82 million) was about million less than the Vince Vaughn comedy and 21 Bridges may be up at around just - million when it leaves theaters. Finally, Todd Phillips’ Joker spent its eighth straight week in the top 10. It has passed 0 million domestic, .048 billion worldwide, and is Warner Bros. fourth-highest grossing film of all time. Joker also passed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to become the 35th highest-grossing film of all time. This Time Last Year: Another Possession Could Not Scare Ralph From Top Spot(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)It was the weekend after Thanksgiving so grosses were down a bit, but still a lot of people were going to the movies. The only major new release was The Possession of Hannah Grace, which opened in seventh place with .4 million. Ralph Breaks the Internet was again on top with .56 million, passing the 0 million mark. The Grinch moved up to second with .92 million, enough to pass the 0 million line. Creed II fell back to third with .63 million and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald had the steepest fall in the top 10 (61.3%) to .36 million. The top 10 films grossed a total of 6.19 million and averaged 61.4% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 6.98 million over the weekend and averaged 67.3% with critics. On the Vine: A Balloon Adventure and an Acclaimed Romance Set to Light Up Indie Box OfficeThe weekend after Thanksgiving is usually a dead zone for new releases and indeed only one film is going wide and that is the oft-delayed animated film from STX, Playmobil: The Movie. The million production was moved from January to April to August and then into December. It has grossed just .4 million in international waters to date, and may have trouble matching that here. In limited release, try to catch The Aeronauts on the biggest screen possible as it is not often you get a chance for a hot air balloon adventure with Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne – especially one that s Certified fesh at 84% on the Tomatometer to date. Even more acclaimed is the 98%-rated Portrait of a Lady On Fire. The beloved French romance was a hit at Cannes this year, winning Best Screenplay, and it is also nominated for Best International Film at the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards. The Full Top 10: November 29-December 1Frozen II (2019) 78% – .25 million (7.57 million total)Knives Out (2019) 97% – .02 million (.7 million total)Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92% – .22 million ( million total)A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% – .8 million (.31 million total)Queen & Slim (2019) 83% – .7 million (.81 million total)21 Bridges (2019) 54% – .82 million (.46 million total)Playing With Fire (2019) 24% – .2 million (9.2 million total)Midway (2019) 42% – .96 million (.28 million total)Joker (2019) 68% – .98 million (0.6 million total)Last Christmas (2019) 46% – .9 million (.66 million total)

(Photo by Universal Pictures)What s better than a love story set against the backdrop of the holiday season? How about 10 interconnected love stories set against the backdrop of the holiday season, populated by an A-list ensemble cast and directed by the man who brought us charmers like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones s Diary? Thanks to Richard Curtis and stars like Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Laura Linney, and many more, 2003 s Love Actually has bred a generation of adoring fans who count the film among their regularly scheduled holiday programming. That said, the movie s collection of romances has inspired no small amount of criticism over the years, and not just from joyless Grinch types, either. Some of the characterizations and relationships portrayed are, let s say, questionable in nature, and for some, no amount of cheeky Christmas-themed cheer is going to cut through that.Of course, this means it s up to us and you to settle another Christmas movie debate here on RT. Is Love Actually a modern Christmas classic, or is it just a problematic mess of a film? We present an argument representing each side of the debate from a passionate RT staffer, but it s up to you to make the call. Read on and vote below!Yes, Love Actually Is All Around!(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Let’s first get this out of the way: Love Actually is at times terrible, actually. And it is, almost all the time, problematic. We will not go point-for-point refuting the online thinkpieces that break down all the ways it is so, because we agree. Does it fat-shame Martine McCutcheon’s Natalie and Aurelia’s sister (a.k.a. “Miss Dunkin’ Donut 2003” and woman no one could ever possibly marry)? Abso-bloody-lutely. Is Andrew Lincoln’s Mark really just a terribly dressed stalker? Yes: Call Scotland Yard! Does just about every thread contain some iffy, arguably misogynistic undertones? Kinda, actually. But here’s the thing: as the Internet has taught us, all your faves are problematic – but that doesn’t mean we have to cancel them in their entirety. Rather, as Molly Ringwald showed in her recent essay for the New Yorker on The Breakfast Club, enlightenment allows us to grapple with past pop culture, to criticize and dissect it and call out its failings, even as we remain attached to elements of it. These things are complex. Because for all the glaring issues with Love, Actually, the movie has huge globs of earnest heart (we’ve all been as lovesick as Sam), soaring moments of joy (spontaneous wedding performance!), and Emma Freaking Thompson giving us all the feels. Plus Bill Nighy. Plus the nude couple. Plus “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Plus Mr. Bean. And on and on. And most of all, it makes a sh ton of people happy as hell every December – people of all backgrounds and shapes. Should we consign it to the trash, like so much torn-up wrapping paper? To do so would be to deny people their annual Love, Actually pleasure, and to shut down the exact kinds of healthy conversations about art that have led the world to reassess its merits. No, It s a Festering Turd(Photo by Universal Pictures)Before anyone starts pointing fingers, it’s not feminism that made Love Actually unsexy. It’s the film’s own misunderstandings of romance and attraction that make it problematic and, in many ways, revolting. Despite what Love Actually tries to tell you, it’s not cute to stalk your best friend’s beau, or your secretary (or your boss), or your housekeeper. Nor is it romantic to objectify your crush, or funny to fat-shame anyone. Also, it’s absolutely uncool to shame men for having emotions. (The next person to call anyone a “sissy” is getting coal in their stocking.)“Who do you have to screw around here to get a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit?” is an actual line spoken by the Prime Minister in Love Actually. But never fear, his assistant is right around the corner to answer his demands for snacks! Later, he goes to her house to profess his love for her — but “he” is Hugh Grant, so it’s… supposedly less creepy? (Hint: It’s still inappropriate; he’s her boss.)And don’t even get me started on the British boy seeking a “good shag” in the United States. Maybe Love Actually was trying to make a point about hyper-sexualization in American media (British pot, meet American kettle), but in order to pose such a critique, it would have had to actually be critical. Instead, it lets predatory men gawk at cardboard women — stand-ins for women with professional lives and actual personalities — over and over again. It’s meant to be funny, but again, it’s just cringeworthy.Love Actually so desperately tries to create endearing plots for each of its celebrated cast members that it reduces each of them to outdated, now-embarassing tropes. Love Actually is no classic; it’s a relic of problematic rom-coms past.

Ghcxuf (Photo by Apparatur Film, Kino Lorber, GKIDS, Netflix, Array Releasing)2019 has been an exciting year at the movies for fans of innovative, envelope-pushing filmmakers from across the globe, from Colombian indigenous crime saga Birds of Passage to Gaspar Noé’s dazzling dance-horror Climax to Carlos Reygadas’ existentialist marriage drama Our Time. But you could be forgiven for not knowing that. With the saturation of the market – tons of movies are released each week in theaters and on VOD – and the public’s pervasive fear of subtitles, as well as the lack of access to art house and indie offers, these visions have a harder time breaking through today, even with the advent of streaming services. Without consistent championing from critics or costly marketing campaigns, which most small distributors can’t afford, scores of fantastic works go unnoticed soon after their one-week theatrical runs – often in just a handful of theaters in L.A. or New York.To help you unearth these treasures, we’ve put together a list highlighting some of the most audacious features from around the world, selected from a long list of uncompromising releases that landed on American screens, big and small, this year so far. These 20 recommendations exemplify the refreshing, eye-opening, and empathy-inducing stories that can be discovered when we look beyond known faces and familiar storylines. These titles may not ring a bell right now, but if you see them, you won’t be able to stop thinking about them. 😈😈

亚博竞猜APP The hit 2018 horror movie A Quiet Place could have easily been a standalone feature, one proving John Krasinski was indeed a great director as well as actor, and especially successful alongside his co-starring wife, Emily Blunt. But now there’s a sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, and it’s finally hitting theaters on May 28!Does it prove itself worthy of existence as a follow-up? Does it also show promise for a continued franchise (as Paramount is planning)? The first reviews are out and mostly positive on both fronts, even if not all of them agree on the sequel being at least as good as the original. Here’s what critics are saying about A Quiet Place Part II:How does it compare to the first film? The second installment is just as good as the first one, proving to be an incredibly effective and tense experience.  Joey Magidson, Awards RadarIt’s another breathless chamber piece, expertly crafted to pack dread into every nerve-rattling sound.  David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterKrasinski has not at all let up on the thrills and chills and alien-centric terror, but he’s also bulked up on the drama, emotion, and very human pain at its center.  Kate Erbland, IndieWireThe thriller is still engrossing in many spots but ultimately doesn’t come together like the first one. Though, it’s not for lack of trying.  Rodrigo Perez, The PlaylistIn many ways, Part II suffers from some of the same follow-up problems afflicting The Lost World: Jurassic Park.  Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineIt struggles to recapture the lightning that turned the 2018 original into a hit.  Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/©Paramount Pictures)Does it rehash the original or build upon it?The fortunate thing is how effective the film is at expanding this world without betraying the qualities that made the first work. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentPart II earns the promise of a sequel by doing what the best sequels do, striking out in search of new stories instead of settling for retracing its steps. Angie Han, MashableA Quiet Place Part II seems content to reiterate rather than build on its predecessor’s revelations. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesWhat this second installment mostly offers more of is the same… echoing without quite amplifying the pleasures of its predecessor. A.A. Dowd, AV ClubIs it worth seeing either way?The focus is broadened with diminishing returns, but A Quiet Place Part II still manages to conjure up enough thrills to make it worthwhile. Ian Freer, Empire MagazineThey come up with more than enough to justify a second trip into their world. Angie Han, MashableAs a piece of storytelling, it’s skimpy and vaguely unsatisfying. As a series of fight, flight, or bite-your-tongue set pieces, it delivers. A.A. Dowd, AV Club(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/©Paramount Pictures)How is John Krasinki s direction this time? His ability to direct stunning, action-driven set pieces on par with any other blockbuster has grown, [and] so too has Krasinski’s initial motivation: to make a movie for his family. Kate Erbland, IndieWireI don’t know if Krasinski plans to remain in the realm of genre films as a director, but he indeed continues to deliver, even for a movie that didn’t have to exist. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentKrasinski’s milked this franchise and its gimmicks to provide us with his two best showings behind the camera, but he—like its characters—needs to grow beyond it. Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineKrasinski’s filmmaking mostly has a slick, well-tooled confidence that should land him a superhero gig soon, but it might be wise to let the Abbotts off the hook for now. Ian Freer, Empire MagazineWhat about the screenplay? The intimacy of the storytelling tugs relentlessly at our anxieties for the duration. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterKrasinski has sole writing credit this time, and while his directing is more impressive, the way he opens up this world is pretty satisfying. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarDual storylines are wrapped up together ingeniously… What is interesting about this film is that it quite persuasively shows us a post-post-apocalyptic situation. Peter Bradshaw, GuardianThe relentless tension and close-quarters intimacy that he established in the first film can’t help but slacken under the weight of a swiftly expanding narrative. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesIt hints at a bigger world outside the boundaries of its genre games, then largely neglects to explore it. A.A. Dowd, AV ClubIt can’t just recycle the premise of the first film as many a horror sequel has done. So instead, it fills up the runtime with plot — and a fairly run-of-the-mill post-apocalyptic thriller plot, at that. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmSome of the screenplay’s conceptions of how society has disintegrated don’t really track. Ian Freer, Empire Magazine(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/©Paramount Pictures)Is it scary? There are some jump scares that had me Fosbury-flopping out of my seat with a yelp. Peter Bradshaw, GuardianThe jump scares here are legitimately distressing because there’s so little distance separating us from the main characters. Those jolts are not cheap tricks but immersive approximations of what the people onscreen are experiencing. David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter[The premise] comes with its unique terror, an inherent tension in watching anyone do anything that might kick up a bit of noise. But there is also the anxiety in what Krasinki’s characters can see. Kate Erbland, IndieWireJump scares and bloody mayhem are more the order of the day. They re effective in the moment — I nearly fell out of my seat a few times — but they don t linger in their terror, and there s nothing close to the excruciating horror of the nail or birth scenes from the original. Angie Han, MashableIs it a horror or a post-apocalyptic adventure?… A Quiet Place II falls somewhere in between, with the effective thrills and jump scares of a horror film, but with an overly familiar post-apocalyptic plot that we’ve seen many times before. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmThe reason these films work is not because of the scares. They work because, at their heart, they are a high concept meditation on parenting. Lindsey Bahr, Associated PressDoes it work as a family drama? While becoming a bigger flick, it still retains an emotional quotient that makes you care about the Abbott family. Without that, this would be just another creature feature. Instead, it’s something more. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarPart II feels caught between two conflicting modes, a tightly focused family drama and a more expansive vision of post-apocalyptic decay. Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/©Paramount Pictures)How are the performances?Millicent Simmonds owns A Quiet Place Part II in a way that assures this her franchise. Matt Donato, What to WatchThis is very much Millicent Simmonds’ movie. Her elevation to the full-on hero of this franchise is well earned. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarSimmonds is an excellent performer: bold, confident and forthright, holding her own opposite the alpha-emoting presence of Murphy. Peter Bradshaw, GuardianThe kids are good, but sorry, they’re no Emily Blunt. Rodrigo Perez, The PlaylistBlunt and Murphy convey volumes with just their eyes, and they’re matched by Jupe and Simmonds, two of contemporary film’s most empathetic and insightful actors of any age. Alonso Duralde, The WrapThere is a key aspect that worked in Part II‘s favor, and that’s the addition of Cillian Murphy. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentMurphy and Simmonds are a fantastic pairing. Murphy brings a likability and tenderness to a fairly well-worn archetype, while Simmonds is allowed to shine as the clear-eyed heroine of the piece. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmHow does the movie look?If the shots capturing predator and prey often owe a debt to James Cameron’s Aliens, well, there are worse models to emulate. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterKrasinski and cinematographer Polly Morgan know how to shoot the apocalypse. Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineCinematographer Polly Morgan’s effused light provides a fascinating juxtaposition, balancing the beauty of nature with the omnipresent dangers lurking. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionPolly Morgan‘s visuals aren’t quite as memorable as last time, but the cinematography is still very elegant. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarAdd to that a better handle on the visual effects used to depict these violent creatures, and you have a film that really found itself when it comes to all of the technical aspects. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live Entertainment(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/©Paramount Pictures)And how does it sound?Immersive sound design is again the superstar. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThe layered sound design, fittingly, is a thing of beauty. And like the first film, this one also benefits immeasurably from Marco Beltrami’s vigorous orchestral score. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterThe movie sounds great and utilizes sound brilliantly. No franchise is as mesmerizing on an auditory level as this one is. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarWhile I don’t think the sound is leveraged toward dramatic ends, here, as well as in the prior installment, the craft is still intermediately astounding as it builds to create big-time scares. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsShould we look forward to more sequels?Amusingly enough, [its] measured world-building also sets the stage for still more stories and sequels. Kate Erbland, IndieWireWhere the story will go from here it s hard to guess, though it does seem reasonable to assume it s not over. Part II seeds more than a few possible avenues for potential spinoffs and sequels. Angie Han, MashableThe ellipsis not only demands but practically promises another installment. Stay tuned for Part III, it screams without words. A.A. Dowd, AV ClubA Quiet Place Part II only swings us to the next film. Rather than allowing us to enjoy this one. Plus, there s a new heart-warmer starring Shia LaBeouf. In the indie trailer section, we re getting our first looks at upcoming titles from Will Forte in a hilarious-looking sci-fi comedy to a taut thriller with Sir Ben Kingsley.Opening This Weekend

亚博竞猜APP After enduring setbacks as large as a studio merger and a worldwide pandemic, Free Guy is finally here, and according to the reviews, it s absolutely worth the wait. Ryan Reynolds stars in this meta action-comedy as Guy, an everyman bank teller in a video game called Free City who is content to respawn every day as an NPC (non-player character). Unbeknownst to him, a couple of rogue programmers (Jodie Comer, Joe Keery) in the real world are in open rebellion against the game s new corporate owner (Taika Waititi), and the extra code they implement in the game makes Guy self-aware; thus begins his journey from regular dude to world-saving hero. It s probably safe to say that few people expected this film to be anything more than a mild diversion, but Free Guy has become the surprise of the summer, with critics calling it a relentlessly optimistic, laugh-out-loud funny comedy that lovingly pokes fun at gamer culture but offers enough entertainment value for video game agnostics. It may not hit all of its targets, but it s goofy, earnest, action-packed, and hilarious, which feels pretty spot-on for a summer movie success.
