Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (HBO)The threat of nuclear annihilation remained a perennial boogeyman for children of the 1980s, so it was particularly terrifying when news of the Chernobyl disaster spread across the world. HBO s Chernobyl harnesses that anxiety to deliver a bone-chilling reprimand of human arrogance, drawing viewers in by telling some of the smaller stories that played out alongside the big, headline-generating one. Series creator, executive producer, and writer Craig Mazin and director Johan Renck won Emmys for their work here, expertly mixing elements of visceral horror and unsettling dread with deep human drama, and the cast is all aces. Long-time character actor Jared Harris turns in some of his finest work as Valery Legasov, the consultant brought in by the Soviet government to investigate the incident. He s the anchor of the narrative, but he s flanked by Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson in excellent supporting roles – all three of them were nominated for Emmys – while Paul Ritter is downright loathsome as Anatoly Dyatlov, the chief engineer at the plant whose obstinacy led to the catastrophe. It feels almost disrespectful to call this entertainment, but Chernobyl is some of the most compelling drama HBO has crafted in recent memory. – Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorWhere to watch: HBO or HBO Now, FandangoNOW, Amazon, iTunes, VuduCommitment: 5 hours (five-episode miniseries)Mrs. Fletcher: Limited Series (2019) 82% (HBO)Mrs. Fletcher creator Tom Perrotta is one of our generation’s premier miners of suburbia’s dark corners – he wrote the novel Election as well as the screenplay for Little Children. He also knows a thing or two about compelling TV – he EP’d The Leftovers. Here he brings both skills to bear on a story that we’ve seen before – empty nester searching for new meaning when her son leaves college – but never like this. Part of that is due to the series’ incisive and frank treatment of porn and the way in which it has entered the little ticky-tacky homes of American suburbia and smashed open doors and shattered taboos. In Mrs. Fletcher, the titular divorcee rediscovers herself via a number of pornographic genres, while we also see the way a steady diet of hardcore has affected her college-age son’s ability to be intimate. But mostly the series soars thanks to Kathryn Hahn, who is incredible as Eve Fletcher; touchingly lost in her newfound aloneness one moment, giddily seizing control of new opportunities the next. Hahn was another terrible snub for the 2020 Golden Globes. It’s almost a bonus that Perrotta surrounds her with an endearing cast of characters whose stories are as rich and compelling as Mrs Fletcher’s. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: HBO or HBO Now, FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google PlayCommitment: Approx. 3.5 hours (one season)What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 (2019) 94% (FX)If you haven’t taken a bite out of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s TV adaptation of their 2014 film, you’re in luck! Now’s a great time to binge season 1 of this vampire reality show satire, because season 2 is right around the corner, premiering April 15 on FX. The half-hour comedy stars Matt Berry as Laszlo, Kayvan Novak as Nandor, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson – a group of vampire roommates living-dead in Staten Island. Harvey Guillen slays as Lazlo’s human “familiar,” Guillermo. We won’t spoil the 10-episode first season for you, but there are some excellent cameos to look forward to. And you have our word: This is one vampire-TV offering that doesn’t suck. – Debbie Day, Sr. TV EditorWhere to watch: FXNOW, Hulu, FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google Play, AmazonCommitment: Approx. 5 hours (one season)Supernatural 93% (CW)The Winchester Bros. long and winding road is coming to an uncertain close, so what better time to get caught up on the 14 seasons that started it all? For those new to the monster-hunting party: Supernatural follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester on a grand, ghoul-bashing tour of the United States. From wendigos and chupacabras to fighting the devil himself, there’s no creature Dean and Sam haven’t faced at least once, if not several times, all the while dealing with a very complicated family history that just won’t leave them alone. The deeper you get into Supernatural’s lore the more bonkers it all gets, but with a reliable creature-of-the-week format and undeniable chemistry between stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki it’s an easy binge. And with almost two weeks worth of spooky fun, you won’t have ,to worry about running out of story anytime soon. (But be warned, all ye who enter: the CW has halted production on the back half of the show s final season, leaving the series finale in limbo. With any luck, it ll pull a Winchester and find its way to a small screen near you soon enough.) – Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation ManagerWhere to watch: Netflix, FandangoNOW, Amazon, Vudu, Google PlayCommitment: Approx. 13 days, 7 hours (14 seasons)Kingdom 96% (Netflix)Set in Korea, about 400 years ago in the Joseon era, the series kicks off with a “sick King, who no one is allowed to see. There is a movement to crown the illegitimate Crown Prince to the throne. In the middle of the political drama, a mysterious plague spreads and forces the Crown Prince on a mission to uncover and stop the disease. Whether or not you’re still watching The Walking Dead, Kingdom is a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse genre. Plus, thanks to Parasite, South Korean content is front and center these days, and if you already love 2016 Korean zombie movie Train to Busan, you’ll get the same shocking, breathless moments in this series. A period piece, Kingdom will subvert your expectations in a lot of ways, not the least of which is the setting. This is not TWD — the zombies run fast, and no one can hide in a mall 400 years in the past. Add to that, amazing special effects and gorgeous cinematography that bring to life a bloody good time. – Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of Production Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 11 hours (two seasons)Medical Police: Season 1 (2020) 92% (Netflix)If you think a satirical sketch comedy series about a team of Children s Hospital doctors in Brazil who try to find a cure for a disease that s rapidly spreading across the globe may not be the best thing to watch right now, I m sorry but you re wrong.  Medical Police is a spoof of procedurals like CSI, 24, and The Blacklist, in addition to being a spin-off of Children s Hospital (2010-2016), which itself is a spoof of medical dramas like ER and Grey s Anatomy. It s like a sketch comedy house of mirrors where your favorite comedians and guest stars are given free rein to be as weird and funny as they want be. – Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 5 hours (one season)Elite 97% (Netflix)It’s Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies — have we got your attention? A standout of Netflix’s international programming, Elite has everything you could want in a soapy noir melodrama: tortured rich teens, murder, chic fashion, sex – all while the youths are studying for those pesky exams. Elite finds nuance in its pulp and explores themes like classism, racism, and LGBTQ issues with a surprising amount of realism and grit. Power is one of the central pillars of this show; how its characters use or misuse it to get what they want creates a lot of highly entertaining moments, like seeing the students concoct a plan to deflect blame for a death at a nightclub. It also boasts a soundtrack that rivals Euphoria’s. A highlight to look for is former Mexican child-star-turned-acclaimed-pop-star Danna Paola’s turn as Lucrecia, daughter to the Mexican ambassador in Spain. Lucrecia is the best diva-villain-with-a-secret-heart-of-gold since Blair Waldorf. Netflix offers a dubbed version, but we highly recommend watching the series in its native Spanish language with English subtitles. And now is the perfect time to start, as the third season is streaming on Netflix. – Daisy Gonzalez, Theatrical Review CuratorWhere to watch: Netflix Commitment: Approx. 22.5 hours (three seasons)Check out our regular March Binge Guide. 玩英雄联盟手游的很多都是端游的玩家,他们在端游中或许就有类似的皮肤,而玩手游再买一个皮肤确实有点令他们心疼。并且手游中的皮肤价格跟端游中的价格一样并没有便宜,所以很多玩家们也是很纠结究竟需不需要去购买皮肤。

Ghcxuf This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Avatar 2, Insidious 5, and new roles for Dave Bautista and Jennifer Lopez. This WEEK S TOP STORYJORDAN PEELE PRODUCING PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS REMAKE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One popular sentiment about remakes is that they re more acceptable when the first attempt can clearly be improved upon. In 1991, Wes Craven (in his post-Nightmare on Elm Street, pre-Scream years) directed a creepy movie called The People Under the Stairs (Fresh at 66%), which has its fans, but is hardly remembered as a classic of the genre. One producer who appears to think it would be a worthy candidate for a quality remake is Get Out and Us director Jordan Peele, who is teaming up with Universal Pictures for exactly that. Perhaps not coincidentally, this Sunday also happens to mark the 29th anniversary of the original film s release on November 1, 1991. Another horror remake that Jordan Peele is producing, Candyman, is still awaiting its COVID-19-delayed release date, which is currently tentatively re-scheduled for August 27, 2021, 14 months after its original release date in June.Other Top Headlines1. INSIDIOUS STAR PATRICK WILSON TO MAKE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT WITH FIFTH INSTALLMENT(Photo by ©FilmDistrict courtesy Everett Collection)One common concern for fans of long-running horror franchises is how long their stars will stick around. Insidious may not have been named the scariest movie ever recently like Sinister was (or even The Exorcist, according to our own poll), but the four movies to date have brought in over half a billion dollars worldwide. Insidious star Patrick Wilson will not only be returning for a fifth installment, but he ll also be making his directorial debut with the Blumhouse sequel. Set 10 years after the original Insidious, the central family will now dealing with a big change, as Ty Simpkins character is now going off to college. About taking on the film, Wilson said, I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices. Although she wasn t mentioned in this week s news, it s presumed that Rose Byrne will also be returning, and Lin Shaye has been in every Insidious film, so she s probably likely to come back as well. In related news, Blumhouse is also teaming up with writer and director John Ridley (writer of 12 Years a Slave, Three Kings) for an untitled project based on an arcticle titled Project Poltergeist, a nonfiction story about a young boy who may have experienced paranormal phenomena in New Jersey housing projects during the 1960s.2. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND s RACHEL BLOOM TO WRITE *NSYNC SUPERFANS MOVIE (Photo by Scott Everett White/©The CW)After airing on The CW for four seasons, the musical comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Fresh at 98%) came to end in 2019, but its star and co-creator Rachel Bloom is now getting ready for her next project, and it also has a musical theme. Bloom has signed with Sony Pictures to write a movie about two *NSYNC superfans, based on an idea from *NSYNC member Lance Bass, who s also producing the untitled movie. The movie will be inspired by the true stories of fans Meredith Sandberg and Winter Byington (as described in this Washington Post article titled N Sync or Bust! ) , who spent a summer following the group during their last world tour. Rachel Bloom said about the project, I’m so excited to work on this road trip musical that will explore the nature of early 2000s nostalgia and if the past was, indeed, actually better. Also, I GET TO WORK WITH LANCE BASS! The capital letters were all Bloom s. It s not yet known for sure if Rachel Bloom will also appear in the film (or maybe direct?), or if she s just writing the screenplay.3. FATHER-DAUGHTER DUO ETHAN AND MAYA HAWKE TO STAR IN BEATLEMANIA ROM-COM (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)For many fans of Ethan Hawke, there may have been a gasp! moment while watching season 3 of Stranger Things, as people realized that the new character Robin was played by Maya Hawke, A.K.A. the daughter of Hawke and Uma Thurman. For her next project, the two Hawkes will be teaming up for a romantic comedy set during the glory days of 1960s Beatlemania called Revolver (as in the title of The Beatles seventh studio album), and the beginning of the band s shift towards more psychedelic sounds.  Maya Hawke will play a Beatlemaniac in Alaska who comes up with a plan to give her virginity to shy Beatles guitarist George Harrison when the band unexpectedly had to land there on June 27, 1966 (which did indeed happen). Revolver will be directed by Andrew Stanton, a long-time Pixar collaborator whose credits include Finding Nemo (Certified Fresh at 99%), WALL-E (Certified Fresh at 95%), Finding Dory (Certified Fresh at 94%), and on the live-action front, John Carter (Rotten at 52%). The press release didn t say for sure whether Ethan Hawke will be playing Maya s dad, but that s probably most likely.4. KATE WINSLET REVEALS HER CRAZY AVATAR 2 UNDERWATER RIG (Photo by Twitter: @officialavatar)Due to various delays (but most obviously and most recently COVID-19), we re still over two years away from the December 16, 2022 release date of James Cameron s sequel Avatar 2 (12/16/2022), which will come out 13 years after the first film. It s worth remembering that two years before Avatar came out, movie fans did know he was working on a movie called Avatar, but we didn t yet know that half the cast would be giant blue deer-people aliens. In that respect, the new set image showing off Kate Winslet filming a scene underwater is ripe for fan speculation. In the image, we can see Winslet wearing something like a cape that extends out past her arms via sticks, which, to this writer, make it look like she will be playing something like an alien stingray creature. Winslet has already spoken out this week about filming those scenes for Avatar 2, saying that she learned to hold her breath for up to seven minutes (for reference, the world record is 24 minutes). Winslet s other Avatar 2 co-stars will include Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, and returning cast members from the first movie like Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.5. TAIKA WAITITI PRODUCING NATIVE AMERICAN DRAMA FRYBREAD FACE AND ME (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel)In addition to his own films (from Jojo Rabbit to Marvel movies like Thor: Love and Thunder), writer, director, and producer Taika Waititi also made the news this past summer for signing three Maori writers to tell stories of the indigenous peoples of New Zealand. This week, Waititi widened his support of indigenous filmmakers to include Native Americans with a deal to executive produce a drama called Frybread Face and Me (frybread being a staple food for many Native Americans). Written and directed by Native American filmmaker Billy Luther (who is of Navajo, Hopi, and Laguna Pueblo heritage), Frybread Face and Me will tell the story of two adolescent Navajo cousins from different backgrounds who bond over the course of a summer herding sheep on their grandmother’s ranch in Arizona while learning more about their family’s past and themselves. Frybread Face and Me was also one of the projects selected for this year s Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs.6. ARMIE HAMMER AND JENNIFER LOPEZ TO CO-STAR IN ACTION COMEDY SHOTGUN WEDDING(Photo by Priscilla Grant, RCF/Everett Collection)Next week, despite the challenges of COVID-19, the American Film Market will indeed take place, and as with most similar events (Sundance, Cannes, etc.), this week we heard about some of the projects that will be presented to investors at the event. Some actors are habitually popular at international film sales events like AFM, and this week, one such actor appeared to be Armie Hammer (The Social Network, The Lone Ranger), who is attached to star in two movies. Hammer and Jennifer Lopez will co-star in the Lionsgate action comedy Shotgun Wedding, about a destination wedding that goes terribly wrong when the entire wedding party is taken hostage. Hammer s other new project this week is the Cold War thriller The Billion Dollar Spy, co-starring Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), based on the true story of a Soviet engineer (Mikkelsen) and his CIA handler (Hammer), and the friendship that the two find together.7. THIS WEEK IN CELEBRITY BIOPICS: RICHARD PRYOR AND ANOTHER B.B. KING MOVIE (Photo by Everett Collection)Last week, this column reported on the news from Wendell Pierce (HBO s The Wire) that he is going to be playing famed blues guitarist B.B. King in a movie called The Thrill is On. This week, B.B. King s estate issued a public statement clarifying that there are actually two movies gearing up based on the life of B.B. King, as there will also be an official biopic (separate from The Thrill is On) expected to start filming in 2021. Instead of being a true biopic, The Thrill is On is now being described as a dramatized version of a real-life friendship story in the spirit of the film Round Midnight (or, more recently, perhaps Green Book). In related news, the long-in-development Richard Pryor biopic got a little closer to actually happening this week as black-ish creator Kenya Barris has signed on with MGM to make his feature film directorial debut based on a screenplay he will also write, following a heated film rights auction. 8. DON T EXPECT SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 OR THE SAINT ANYTIME SOON (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)The continuing COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down the releases of dozens of movies, and in some cases, it has compelled studios to skip theaters entirely in favor of streaming debuts, like last week s Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm (Certified Fresh at 85%), which dropped on Amazon Prime. In some cases, however, COVID-19 is also causing films to be indefinitely delayed (or cancelled) altogether. This week, director Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman, Eddie the Eagle) revealed that two of the projects to which he was attached are now on indefinite hold because of the pandemic. Those films are the long-in-development sequel Sherlock Holmes 3 (starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law) and the reboot of the gentleman thief franchise The Saint (previously played on TV by Sir Roger Moore and on film by Val Kilmer). Fletcher said that both films are up against the same dilemma, the same issue that we all [have]: How do you get large groups of p 😈😈

亚博APP官网有信誉 (Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures) million. That’s a headline. That is more money than the combined total of the  number 1 film at the box office for the last five weeks. It is around million more than what every film has made for the last two weekends. Granted, that is a five-day total since Wednesday, but whether it is million or .9 million (its three-day weekend haul), Godzilla vs. Kong has provided some life for theatrical prospects. Especially after besting Wonder Woman 1984’s entire domestic gross in just five days. Who would have guessed that three of the best four theatrical openings over the past year would be films also concurrently available on HBO Max for home subscribers? Warner Bros. has to be feeling particularly good about that, grabbing the best of both worlds after some serious criticism with the sudden move for their 2021 lineup to the dual-opening strategy back in December. Before everyone starts date-shaming the umpteenth-shifting No Time To Die for moving from this weekend, we’ll have to see how Godzilla vs. Kng holds over the next several weeks. Warner Bros. already pushed back Mortal Kombat a week to give GvK an additional week at number before that takes over. WB’s HBO Max titles are likely to be on top of the box office for six straight weeks. More theaters and chains are opening this month, which could reduce the weekly drops a little. While Wonder Woman 1984 dropped over 67% after Christmas weekend, the last three WB releases have fallen between 53.2% and 56.3% and done (to date) 2.50-3.17 times their opening grosses. The last film in the MonsterVerse series, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, had a 3-day opening of .7 million (.1 million in five days) and finished with just 0 million domestic and 6 million internationally. GvK is practically there with theaters at limited capacity and some chains still closed. The mere thought that we could even be talking about a 0 million picture again, let alone one that has already grossed 5 million worldwide, is a day many probably thought was much further down the road and provides real hope that we are on the road to recovery — if we can just hold out a bit more and continue to get vaccinated.Versus vs. Versus: Which Is the Highest-Earning and Freshest Movie Showdown?

That means they ll just have to be more creative in this day and age, and you ll find the ones up to task on our list of the best sci movies (and the worst) of 2019! ( The worst implying you ll also find the ones that aren t). The offerings this year include big-budget spectacles (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), mid-budget mindblowers (I Am Mother), a Michael J. Fox-featured time travel joint (See You Yesterday), and even something from genre wanderer Keanu Reeves (Replicas). As with our other genre lists (2019 s best in horror, comedy, and action),each sci-fi movie needed at least 20 reviews for inclusion. Distribution method was not a factor. From Ava Duvernay, Rian Johnson, and Ryan Coogler to Nicole Holofcener, Quentin Tarantino, and Robert Rodriguez, dozens of filmmakers have burst out of the Sundance Film Festival and chased their Hollywood dreams. Some directors, like Cathy Yan, made the leap from small budget indies like Dead Pigs to big budget studio movies like her next project, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Others, like Steven Soderbergh, have continued to blaze an unconventional path since his debut with Sex, Lies and Videotape over 30 years ago. This year’s group of first-time filmmakers are no less talented, many of them already earning praise from audiences and critics alike. There’s a good chance we may see many more movies from them in the years to come.I Carry You With Me (2020) 97%(Photo by Alejandro López courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Sony Pictures ClassicsTechnically speaking, I Carry You With Me isn t a true debut for Heidi Ewing, who has been crafting acclaimed feature documentaries for a decade and a half (2006 s Jesus Camp was even nominated for an Oscar). That said, Ewing makes her first foray into narrative filmmaking with this touching drama, which follows two men in Mexico, Iván and Gerardo, as they meet, fall in love and decide to try their luck in the United States. The film moves back and forth through the men’s lives, revisiting different moments from their childhood up to the present day, where they now live in New York and are unable to reunite with their families south of the border because they left without immigration papers. I Carry You with Me won Sundance’s NEXT Innovator Award and the audience award for its category. Carlos Aguilar wrote for Remezcla, “Ravishing and unshakable, Ewing s authentic film feels like the crossbreed between a painful memory and a hopeful dream about a place, a relationship and a fight for acceptance that s not political but entirely humanistic.”Crip Camp (2020) 100%(Photo by Steve Honigsbaum courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixNicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht teamed up to revisit a chapter of nearly forgotten history and trace its influence on attendees. In the early ‘70s, not far from Woodstock, an inclusive camp gave unprecedented training and opportunities to people with disabilities. Empowered by their experiences, LeBrecht and his fellow campers and counselors would go on to accomplish many things – including advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Crip Camp won the audience award for its U.S. Documentary category. Esther Zuckerman wrote for Thrillist, “Through incredible archival footage, the documentary shows how campers at Jened were given the freedom they so often lacked in the outside world. There s smoking, sex, partying, and a sense of pure community.”The Forty-Year-Old Version (2020) 98%(Photo by Jeong Park courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixWritten, directed by, and starring Radha Blank, this dramedy is a loosely autobiographical riff filtered through a classic-looking black-and-white lens. Blank plays a version of herself who’s nervous about approaching 40 as a single woman and struggling artist. Luckily, she rediscovers her love of hip-hop and finds a new source of inspiration for her material. Blank, a playwright and comedian off-screen, brings her sharp wit to the experience of a woman on the edge of a career breaking point, winning the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic category at Sundance in the process. Aramide Tinubu wrote in Shadow and Act, “Vulnerable but vibrant in all of it s black, white and grey-hued glory, The 40-Year-Old Version is an ode to BLACK Harlem, fearlessness and the art of putting yourself on.”Some Kind of Heaven (2020) 93%(Photo by Becca Haydu courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/ALance Oppenheim’s quirky documentary takes audiences to a picture-perfect retirement community in Florida known as The Villages. Despite dozens of clubs, activities and smiling faces, his camera finds subjects who aren’t so pleased with paradise but are trying to make the best of their remaining years. Writing for Variety, Dennis Harvey said, “Those nostalgic for the fond portraits of eccentric Americana in Errol Morris early work and pretty much everyone else will be delighted by Some Kind of Heaven. This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection (2019) 100%(Photo by Pierrede Villiers courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/ALemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s debut opens in the mountains of Lesotho, where an 80-year-old woman loses her son and takes up a new cause in life: to protect her village from bureaucratic plans that would wipe it off the face of the earth. The film won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Visionary Filmmaking at Sundance. Allan Hunter of Screen International said, “This Is Not A Burial, It s A Resurrection offers a vivid, beautifully crafted reflection on identity, community and the tension between respecting age-old traditions and accepting the seemingly unstoppable march of progress.”Save Yourselves! (2020) 89%(Photo by Matt Clegg courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AIt’s the ultimate sci-fi nightmare: in an effort to disconnect from their addictions to smartphones, a Brooklyn couple, Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani), go off the grid for some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong time to swear off the internet, as the planet falls under attack by aliens. Amy Nicholson of Variety wrote about Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s comedy, “There s only one joke in Save Yourselves! this hapless generation is doomed! but the survival comedy is delightful from start to apocalypse.”Palm Springs (2020) 95%(Photo by Chris Willard courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Hulu, NeonMax Barbakow’s time-traveling romantic comedy follows Sarah (Cristin Milioti) and Nyles (Andy Samberg) on the day of Sarah’s little sister’s wedding. When Sarah looks reluctant to give a toast at the party, Nyles steps in to help, and the two strike up a rapport that eventually leads them both into a type of time warp that causes the hellish wedding day to start anew. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast said, “There s a massive, Groundhog Day-evoking twist that instantly transports this from cute rom-com to high-concept deconstruction of a rom-com that illuminates our need for connection of course, filtered through the wily charms of Lonely Island.”Promising Young Woman (2020) 90%(Photo by Focus Features)Distributor: Focus FeaturesTurning the revenge narrative upside down, Emerald Fennell’s clever Promising Young Woman follows Cassie (Carey Mulligan) as an old school friend Ryan (Bo Burnham) reenters her life and reminds her of the terrible incident that caused her to drop out of med school. Forever affected by this event, Cassie decides to turn her grief into a teaching moment for those who betrayed her years ago. Joi Childs wrote in Teen Vogue, “A stellar performance from Mulligan paired with an ambitious vision from Fennell comes together to create a story that s a bold takedown of rape culture and those that defend it.”Miss Juneteenth (2020) 99%(Photo by Rambo Elliott courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AChanning Godfrey Peoples’ debut feature follows a mother-daughter story deep in the heart of Texas. Turquoise (Nicole Beharie), the winner of her town’s beauty pageant title of Miss Juneteenth, lives a very different life than the one she once imagined as a reigning champion. She’s just scraping by as a single mom, trying her hardest to stay above the bills and convince her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) to go after the crown to finish what she started – even if Kai isn’t too keen on following through. Valerie Complex wrote in AwardsWatch, “Miss Juneteenth is written with hope in mind, and the audience will root for Turquoise. Not a tropey caricature that Hollywood likes to box Black actresses into.”Nine Days (2020) 88%(Photo by Wyatt Garfield courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AAlthough divisive among some critics, many supported Edson Oda’s vision for his feature debut, Nine Days. Starring Winston Duke, Zazie Beetz, Benedict Wong, Bill Skarsgård, Tony Hale and David Rysdahl, Nine Days takes place outside the realm of this reality for a mind-bending look at birth, existence, and life. Nine Days also won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic category. Brian Tallerico wrote in RogerEbert.com that the film was “one of the most unexpected experiences I ve had in almost a decade of going to Sundance.”Like this? 亚博APP官网有信誉 (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)If the footage from the Avengers: Endgame trailers is to be believed, the original Avengers will be reunited to avenge the loss of their friends, and well, half of the universe. To do this, they’ll need a clean shave (lookin’ at you Cap), new haircuts (Hello Hawkeye), and superheroes from every Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to help them. We don’t know what will happen after the dust settles (or reforms into our favorite superheroes), but we do know it will be a colossal conclusion to the successful 10-film third phase of the MCU.In honor of the grand finale to Phase 3, and in preparation for a new wave of heroes taking over, we’ve done a Tomatometer deep dive into the 21 films that make up the three phases of the MCU so far. The result? Eighteen fascinating – we hope! – stats about the MCU, covering every one of the Marvel Studios films released since 2008. Dig in below, and let us know in the comments whether you agree or disagree with the Tomatometer s findings.1. THE AVERAGE TOMATOMETER AND AUDIENCE SCORES FOR THE ENTIRE MCU ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL — JUST 1.7% APART.(Photo by Zade Rosenthal/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Average Audience Score: 82.1% | Average Tomatometer Score: 83.8% The average Audience Score for every film in the MCU is 82.1%, while the average Tomatometer score is 83.8% — so much for pretentious critics! A 1.7% split is almost unheard of with single films at Rotten Tomatoes, let alone when averaging out scores across 21 movies. Critics and fans: Assemble!2. THE IRON MAN, THOR, AND CAPTAIN AMERICA TRILOGIES EACH HAD DIFFERENT TOMATOMETER TRAJECTORIESIron Man (93%) | Iron Man 3 (79%) | Iron Man 2 (73%)Thor: Ragnarok (92%) | Thor (77%) | Thor: The Dark World (67%)Captain America: Civil War (91%) | Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%) | Captain America: The First Avenger (80%)It’s fitting that franchises featuring playboy billionaires, Asgardian gods, and a clean-cut super soldier would have Tomatometer trajectories as distinct as their titular heroes. The Iron Man trilogy started super Fresh (93%) and its sequels couldn’t recapture the first installment s glory, whereas Thor and Captain America finished very strong (91%, 92%) with the highest Tomatometer-rated movies in their trilogies. Only Captain America avoided a sophomore slump with Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%), while Thor: Ragnarok (92%) totally redeemed its franchise by making a 25% improvement after the near-Rotten Thor: The Dark World (67%).3. BLACK PANTHER IS THE TOMATOMETER KING.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)When looking at the Tomatometer averages for superheroes who have been in at least three MCU movies, they don’t get any better than T’Challa’s 91% Tomatometer average. He has appeared in Captain America: Civil War (91%), Black Panther (97%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%). Also, the 97% Tomatometer score for Black Panther is the best in the MCU.4. Iron Man has the highest Tomatometer and Audience Score combined average: 92%.Talk about strong beginnings: 2008’s Iron Man comes out on top when you average out each film’s Tomatometer and Audience Score. The Tomatometer score for Iron Man is 93% and the Audience Score is 91%, making for an average between the two of 92%. We know a certain “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist” who would be very happy to hear this.5. THE BEST TOMATOMETER STREAK HAPPENED BETWEEN 2017 and 2018. Phase 3’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Black Panther (97%), Avengers: Infinity War (85%), and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) all have above-average Tomatometer scores for the MCU (the MCU average being 83.8%) and average a stellar 90.8% on the Tomatometer. It’s a Pixar-level run that was capped off by Black Panther receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.6. THE WORST TOMATOMETER RUN HAPPENED BETWEEN 2008 and 2012.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Nowadays, after all of the Tomatometer success the MCU has enjoyed, it’s hard to believe that The Incredible Hulk (67%), Iron Man 2 (73%), and Thor (77%) couldn t muster Tomatometer scores above 80%. Those scores aren’t bad at all, but by modern MCU standards, they’re a little lacking. We can’t be too rough on these films though, because the MCU was still in Phase 1, and the next films released were Captain American at 80% and the 92% Tomatometer-rated The Avengers.7. Guardians of the Galaxy is the most loved brand in the MCU, according to the average Audience Scores for their movies (89.5%).Other brands — heroes with one sequel or more — still don’t fare too badly: Captain America (85%), Ant-Man (81%), Iron Man (80%), and Thor (79.6%).Turns out people love A-holes who save the galaxy while listening to awesome music. The James Gunn-directed movies have a totally different vibe to their MCU counterparts (OK, Thor: Ragnarok gives us some GOTG feels), and audiences have latched onto it. You have to admire how Gunn,  the maestro behind Super and Slither, has managed to bring some of his trademark oddness — a severed toe, Jackson Pollock paintings, and a villain who named himself “Taserface” — into the mainstream superhero movie domain.8. Captain America is on the best roll: Tomatometer scores have improved for each successive Cap’ movie (80%, 90%, 91%). (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)It is the only series in the MCU (and among other superhero trilogies) to see this trend. The Captain America series reigns over all MCU trilogies (Iron Man, Thor) when it comes to Tomatometer scores — its three-film average of 87% bests the rest. Also, it is the only superhero trilogy ever to start Fresh and get better with each installment. This is something Thor, Iron Man, Batman, Spider-Man, Blade, Wolverine, and the X-Men can’t claim.9. THE TOMATOMETER AVERAGES DROP WHEN DIRECTORS COME BACK TO DIRECT A SECOND OR THIRD FILM (89% first 82.5% second or third)Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), Peyton Reed (Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp), and the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War) have directed 11 of the 21 released MCU films. The average for their first features is an excellent 89%; however, the average for the second or third films is 82.5%. All of their follow-up films were Fresh, mind you. And we re excited to see if Black Panther director Ryan Coogler can give the 82.5% average a boost when he returns to direct the sequel.10. THIRD MOVIES IN FRANCHISES HAVE THE BEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America: Civil War (91%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Iron Man 3 (79%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%) have an excellent 86.75% Tomatometer average. On its own, the 86.75% average would be impressive, but when compared to the 85% and 79% averages for first and second franchise films in the MCU, it proves that the third time s a charm — according to the Tomatometer.11. Critics and audiences prefer MCU films that are over two hours.More is more in the MCU: The 15 movies in the collection that run longer than 2 hours have a much higher Tomatometer average than their five under-120-minute counterparts (86.7% compared to 76.6%). It’s a coincidence, but it’s worth noting that The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Thor: The Dark World (67%) are the lowest Tomatometer-rated movies and both have 112-minute running times. Good omen: Avengers: Endgame is apparently 182 minutes.12. MCU movies featuring human villains have a higher Tomatometer average.(Photo by © Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Human Villains: 88.75% | Enhanced Humans: 80.8% | Non-Humans: 80.8%Unlike MCU movies involving villainous gods or bad guys who turn themselves into wild creatures, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Black Panther all feature human villains who don’t have special powers (to begin with) and work on the fringes in order to implement their plans. Critics seem to like this approach. Perhaps these villains connect because of their relatable, human motivations — Erik Killmonger wants to right worldly wrongs, Zemo seeks revenge, Michael Keaton s Vulture is after his version of the American Dream, and no one is getting in his way. Hela, on the other hand, wants to rule the universe — something only a couple of critics we know could relate to.13. FEWER DEATHS = BETTER TOMATOMETER SCORES.Of the 21 films in the MCU, only Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) feature fewer than 10 deaths perpetrated by the heroes or villains, and their Tomatometer average is 90%. On the flip side, the Tomatometer average for the six most carnage-heavy MCU movies – among them, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor: The Dark World – is 84.8%. That s dragged down by The Dark World, but still, maybe Thanos should’ve only killed an eighth of the population.14. PHASE 3 CURRENTLY HAS THE HIGHEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE OF THE MCU PHASES, WITH AN AWESOME 88.3%.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It’s kinda crazy that the first nine films of the eventual 10 films that will make up Phase Three of the MCU have an average Tomatometer score of 88.3%. The creative team at Marvel has been able to fine-tune its formula to the point where the lowest score of the Phase 3 movies belongs to the Certified  Fresh Captain Marvel, at 78%. The highest score belongs to the wildly popular Black Panther (97%). Phase 1 has an average Tomatometer of 80.3%, and Phase 2’s average is 80.6%. If the pattern of phase-on-phase growth were to continue, look for Phase 4 to pull off the near-impossible and collect an average of close to 100%. (Unless they break the Tomatometer, it ain’t gonna happen).15. COMEDY-HEAVY MCU MOVIES HAVE A HIGHER TOMATOMETER AVERAGE THAN MORE SERIOUS MCU FILMS (87.1% 82.2%).The main reason we wanted to drop this statistic is so we could discuss the greatness of Luis in the Ant-Man franchise. Sure, we love Korg (Thor: Ragnarok), Ned (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Mantis (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), but they don’t have the storytelling chops that Luis has. Michael Peña’s portrayal of the ex-con who becomes a security consultant is pitch perfect and we can’t get enough of his truth-serum arguments and one-punch knockouts. It won’t happen, but we hope Luis pops up in Avengers: Endgame and saves the day — or at least drops some funny one-liners.16. MCU movies featuring female superheroes have higher Tomatometer (85%) and Audience Score averages (83.5%) than the MCU movies that don’t (80.8%, 78.6%).(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Captain Marvel is the only female-led superhero film in the MCU and won’t have any company in that tier until Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow hits theaters in 2020. However, movies featuring Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and/or Gamora (Zoe Saldana) have higher Tomatometer and Audience Scores on average than their more male-dominated counterparts.17. MCU movies featuring at least five superheroes teaming up have a higher Tomatometer average (87.3%) than their lone-wolf counterparts (82.1%).MCU movies that feature at least five superheroes teaming up to form a supergroup have a solid 87.3% Tomatometer average. These films include The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok (yep, we’re considering Heimdall in our count), and Avengers: Infinity War. It’s hardly a surprise these movies score so well. The best moments of the MCU often come from the camaraderie of super crews as they battle various hordes, or each other, and the universe’s big “wow” moments are usually big team-ups — think of the “gang’s all here” slow-motion shot at the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, or seeing Ant-Man steal Captain America’s shield from Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.18. Tony Stark = Box office gold.(Photo by Industrial Light & Magic/©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)So, this isn t a Tomatometer stat, but it s damn impressive. The Iron Man trilogy may not have the highest Tomatometer average, but it is the highest grossing trilogy with a massive .7 billion worldwide haul (counting inflation). Seems that audiences love Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Tony Stark, and his appearances in non-Iron Man specific movies always guarantee success. He appears in five of the six highest-grossing Marvel movies (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War), and, with Avengers: Endgame coming up, his worldwide tally will easily pass billion. If Avengers: Endgame is Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel swan song, no one can say the team at the big M didn’t get their money’s worth from him.Like this?
