That is the highest opening ever for an original “R”-rated film. The 11 “R” films to open higher were either sequels or adapted from popular books. Us is also the biggest opening ever for an original live-action film in March and an original horror film in any month. Only It and last year’s Halloween opener higher. But…can it outgross Get Out s 6 million?Us has already doubled Get Out’s .4 million opening. A good start indeed. It is the 142nd film to open with million or more. Of those previous 141 films, do you know how many failed to reach the 6 million earned by Get Out? Six. (Fifty Shades of Grey, Halloween 2018, Fast and Furious, Quantum of Solace, X-Men: Apocalypse, 2012). That is already 95.7% in favor of Us besting Get Out’s total. The number to watch next week when Dumbo knocks Us back to second is whether its second weekend is over or under million.Rotten Returns: Captive State Takes A Dive(Photo by Focus Features)In its second week, Focus Features’ Captive State could not remain in a Top 10 where four finishers made less than million this weekend. That is because it took an estimated 70.7% drop to only 8,000. The million production that has grossed all of .2 million in 10 days of release is the second film of 2018 to have a 70% drop or higher. (Replicas fell 81.5%.) In 2018 there were six wide releases that dropped as much in their second weekend – Mortal Engines, Assassination Nation, Gringo, Super Troopers 2, Kin, and Once Upon a Deadpool.Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Top 10 Of MCU(Photo by Disney)One film already carving its path amongst the all-timers at the box office is Captain Marvel. With another million this weekend its total stands at 1 million, the 21st-best total for a film after 17 days of release. Its worldwide total currently stands at 0 million – or – the 7th highest-grossing film based on a Marvel property ever.Among other victories in the Top 10 this week we have How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which is up to 8 million worldwide, just million behind the original (which is still the series’ domestic champion with 7.5 million.) If estimates hold on A Madea Family Funeral it will officially be the third highest-grossing film of Tyler Perry’s directorial career. Finally while the numbers are not giant for Five Feet Apart, a 34% drop from last week means the million production has now grossed over million and should get itself at least over million when all is said and done. This Time Last Year: Pacific Rim Led, But Would Soon Fall(Photo by Warner Bros)One of the biggest bombs of 2018, nevertheless, opened to no. 1 this weekend. Pacific Rim Uprising began with .1 million and later finished with just under million total domestically. Black Panther was finally knocked back to second place with another million as it had amassed over 1 million after six weekends. Also opening with Sherlock Gnomes (.6 million), Paul Apostle of Christ (.1 million), Midnight Sun ( million) and Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane which missed the top ten with .7 million. Leading the per-theater-average charge was Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs (,011 on each of its 27 screens for .62 million.) Fifty Shades Freed also managed to finally cross the 0 million mark.On the Vine: Elephants and a Beach Bum(Photo by Dumbo)Disney releases the first of their 2019 live-action remakes with Dumbo. Tim Burton’s 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was the biggest success of his career and Dumbo could very well end up being his second highest global success. Also opening wide is PureFlix’s abortion drama, Unplanned, the first “R”-rated release for the Christian-based company. Finally, Neon releases Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum with Matthew McConaughey. The Full Top 10: March 22-24Us (2019) 93% – .25 million (.25 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .02 million (1.49 million total)Wonder Park (2019) 34% – .00 million (.47 million total)Five Feet Apart (2019) 53% – .75 million (.46 million total)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90% – .53 million (5.75 million total)Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral (2019) 11% – .50 million (.88 million total)Gloria Bell (2018) 91% – .80 million (.49 million total)No manches Frida 2 (2019) 13% – .78 million (.62 million total)The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) 84% – .13 million (3.32 million total)Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% – .01 million (.87 million total)

(Photo by Courtesy of A24)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: YOUN YUH-JUNG Unbothered might be the best word to describe Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung s attitude towards her first major American awards campaign. When we chatted with the veteran star, who is Oscar-nominated for her turn as an unconventional and hilarious grandmother in writer/director Lee Issac Chung s Minari, she seemed pleased but mostly unaffected by the Hollywood hype around the film her recent accolades, which total more than 50 awards for her supporting performance.  To tell you the truth, it s not that [different], she said during an extended Zoom chat, periodically pulling on an electric vape pen that would put Leonardo DiCaprio s to shame.  I approached it simply, I am myself a grandmother. It s nothing special. She certainly never saw the awards-season hoopla coming when she signed on to the film.  One of my dearest friends brought me the script – it was so very touching and authentic. After I read it, I called her back and asked, Is this based on a real-life story? She said, Yes. And I said, Okay, I ll do it.' And so it was that she joined the quiet immigrant tale, loosely based on Chung s formative years growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas, about the Yi family, led by father Jacob (Steven Yeun), which journeys from California to the South to pursue the dream of building their own farm. Of her decision to play Soonja – who is not the type of grandma the family s young son (Alan Kim) was expecting – Youn says, The people are what is important to me, not the script, not the fame, and not the money. Then she adds with a laugh: Well, not anymore. THE YOUN YUH-JUNG ESSENTIALS: HOW A CHANCE ENCOUNTER MADE A KOREAN MEGA STAR(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films)If you ve seen her work in Minari, it s hard to believe that Youn never intended to act; her career began out of a chance encounter. Searching for a part-time job at a train station while studying at Seoul s Hanyang University, she was approached and asked to stand beside someone. He was a famous MC,  Youn recalls.  He asked if I could sit by him and hand presents to the audience. I did, and then they gave me a check for it! So that was great! She was surprised to learn how much could be made as a performer, and the next thing she knew she was going out for auditions. Then, in 1971, she was approached by director Kim Ki-young to star in what would become the second feature of his Housemaid trilogy, which had begun with 1960 s The Housemaid. The film, Woman of Fire, was, like its predecessor, a hit at home and abroad and catapulted Youn into stardom. We never expected anything like what happened. We never expected to have this world reception from the audience. When I took the job, I didn t even know he was a famous director in Korea.    She quickly followed up Woman of Fire with the title role in Jang Hui-bin, playing the infamous concubine for a Korean television mini-series that became a national phenomenon. With such a debut and streak of stellar work over 50 years, she s been dubbed The Korean Meryl Streep, a comparison she humbly rejects as unworthy praise. I wouldn t dare, Youn says. No, no, no. I mean, she s everything! Her art? Her work? No, no, no. But like the chameleon Streep, Youn has also found ways to re-invent herself over several decades, even while revisiting her older work, as she did in the 2010 Housemaid remake, a feat she quickly brushed aside with another joke: I thought that s very nice, me being in [the reboot] – and still being alive. THE COMEBACK: RECORD-BREAKING SERIES AND A DARING FILM ROLEThere was a period when Youn could not be seen on screens – when she immigrated to America in 1975, she took a 10-year hiatus from filmmaking. When she returned to full-time acting in 1985, she quickly racked up an impressive streak of television work, including Hur Jun, about 15th-century royal physician that broke viewership records with nearly 65% of the nation tuning in.Later, in 2002, she got the script for the film that would restart her silver screen work. Her role in Im Sang-soo s award-winning A Good Lawyer s Wife – full of sex and affairs and dysfunction – is the type of part actor s dream to play. Still, the then 50-ish mother of two hesitated at the time because, I wouldn t be dressed most of the film, I thought, I don t want to be half-naked with a bra. She added: But that s why most of the Korean actresses of that age turned down the role. But, to tell you the truth, I was remodeling my house, and I needed to work. Pragmatic and plain-spoken, Youn is practical about her career and its progression. I don t [map it out] ahead of time because planning things is when you know it s not going to be like that. So now I don t plan anything. If something happens, it happens, I will enjoy it; or, if I fail, that s my fault. (Photo by Courtesy of GEM Entertainment)By the time she starred in Actresses in 2009, Youn was once again one of the most recognizable faces in Korean entertainment, and the unscripted dramedy teamed her up with other premiere names of Korean stage and screen, including Kim Min-hee, who starred in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook Park’s period romantic thriller The Handmaiden. In the primarily improvised Actresses, each of the six actresses plays a fictionalized version of themselves as they prepare for a Korean Vogue photo shoot at a studio on Christmas Eve. Despite the pedigree and talent surrounding her, Youn says many of the actors felt uncomfortable with that level of improvisation and self-revelation. That was the first time we d done something like that in Korea, because we were all very famous. Some didn t want to talk about their private life but, as the oldest one, [I have] nothing to lose – so, I talked about my divorce and my private life. It is no wonder she felt okay with the mockumentary premise: A gathering over cocktails between director E J-yong, Youn, and actress Go Hyun-jung – the two actors have been friends for years – had inspired the idea for the movie, with the director wanting to show the public how charming the actresses were in real life. Spending an hour with Youn – even over Zoom and with not a cocktail in sight – we can see where the filmmaker was coming from.FAN FAVORITES: SENSE8, REALITY SHOW YOUN S KITCHEN, AND A SEXY THRILLERThe role that American audiences were most likely to know Youn for, pre-Minari, was in the Netflix series Sense8, which marked her first foray into American television. In the show, created by the Wachowski siblings, Youn played an inmate who helps one of the telepathic sensates escape from prison. She told us she was surprised to learn about the series global cult-like status and the massive internet fan campaign that prompted the streaming giant to approve one final episode to tie up loose ends when it was canceled after just two seasons. I didn t know that it was such a [big deal] until you mentioned it, Youn says. I m not good at the internet, as you could guess.”It was a small part with some big challenges: the very conceit of the show – where certain people on screen are seen in the minds of some characters, but are invisible to others – made the acting very difficult. They were supposed to be invisible to me. It was very distracting while also trying to concentrate on my lines. You wouldn t know that to watch her in the series; Youn s performance as the wise prisoner made a significant impression on fans, even within her limited screen time.Scripted television is not the only place that Youn has made an impression on the small screen; she is also somewhat of a reality TV star with two shows under her belt. A chance meeting with a famed reality show producer allowed her to join the travel show Sisters Over Flowers before she later did Youn s Kitchen, which featured different twists on traditional Korean dishes.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC films. ) The producer very sincerely chased me, but I told him I m not the right person to be in a reality show, Youn says. I m a very frank person. I would be terrible. However, recognizing that the actress s undeniable charisma is the stuff reality shows are made of, he did not take no for an answer. “We kept meeting each other, and then he kept saying You re going to do the show.’ I didn t realize that at the time, but if he wanted somebody, he could get them – and that s a skill. Youn s Kitchen was another success, with the cinema icon peeling back the layers of her life a bit to celebrate with friends and good food.2012 s The Taste of Money, in which she gives a deliciously evil performance as the matriarch of an über-rich family, peeled back the layers even further. A gender-bent twist on the Housemaid story, Money placed Youn s Baek Geum-ok as the domineering leader of the house and the usual female servant character reset as a handsome young male secretary. Dismissed by critics after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the steamy thriller raised more than a few eyebrows with its depictions of sex, greed, and corruption, and has gone on to enjoy a cult-like status.Regardless of how critics judged Money, Youn marks it as another memorable moment for different reasons – it again allowed her to be very vulnerable on screen while playing a part typically given to male characters. Yeah, I was getting naked over 60, my goodness, she says. Usually, it is the men who get power and use that for sex, but this time it was me, a woman, and I have to say I liked that. FRESHEST WORK: STEALING SCENES IN CELEBRATED IMMIGRANT TALE, MINARI(Photo by Courtesy of a24)How does Youn feel about the current spotlight on Korean cinema, Korean stories, and – during this awards season – her work and Oscar chances? It s all Bong Joon-ho s fault! she says, laughing as she casts the Oscar-winning Parasite director as the villain who has brought global attention to Korean cinema. I am glad I m not in Korea talking to reporters there, [they] like to count the chickens before they ve hatched. There s pressure on me because people are expecting me to win something. We used to watch the Oscars like they were in another world, but because of him everyone in Korea thinks they are in Hollywood now.” I know things have happened, she went on to say, but this [holding up her Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh trophy with a sly smile] is the only actor award that came to me in the mail. (We re glad to know our shipping folks are on it.) When we point out that more hardware is likely coming, she gives a slight shoulder shrug and explains that nothing could ever diminish or amplify her love and connection to the film and those that collaborated with her make it.(Photo by Courtesy of a24)This bond and family-like dynamic carried over to everyone on the Minari crew, but particularly the main cast who, due to the sweltering heat, would often congregate in the set that stood in for the interior of the characters trailer home. The conditions of the shoot were a crucible – this is not a cushy trailer shoot, she says, laughing. You re in the middle of Oklahoma heat. And after one day, I thought I need to go back home. I don t think I should be shooting in America. Luckily, she stayed, in part due to an extended visit from the very friend who handed her the script in the first place – a visit that was something of a mea culpa. When Youn learned Plan B, a company co-founded by Brad Pitt, was producing the project, she figured it could be a lucrative role and inquired about the budget. Her friend relayed the rate in Korean currency, quickly calculating 200 million South Korean won (roughly 5,000), but when she learned her fee would be nowhere near that, she briefly had second thoughts. However, after the friend promised to come visit the set for an extended period of time, the idea of suffering through it seemed more palatable. In thinking back on the shoot now, she is reverential about the experience. I think of my friend sacrificing her vacation to come along with me, about hiding out in the set trailer with Alan, Steven, and Yeri [Han, who plays her daughter] – one of the few locations with ample AC. My friend is an exceptional cook, so every night we gathered at my Airbnb – everyone did – because the food was incredible, and that s how we became a family. With such a foundation behind it, it s no wonder the world – and awards voters – fallen a little bit in love with film and everyone involved, especially the unconventional grandmother at its center.Minari is in theaters and available On Demand now.Download Rotten Tomatoes printable Oscar Ballot; cast your vote in our digital Oscar ballot. (Photo by Matt Sayles/The CW)After what seems like ages, but has actually only been a little less than a year, Stargirl returns to The CW on August 10. And though fans keenly felt those months between seasons, for since Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) and her friends in the Justice Society of America, only a few weeks have passed since they effectively ended the threat of an older generation of supervillains in season 1’s conclusion. Her greatest challenge now is surviving summer school. The decision to pick up so shortly after season 1 was just one of the few things Rotten Tomatoes learned during a press day with Bassinger, fellow stars Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Amy Smart, Luke Wilson, and executive producer Geoff Johns. We’ve rounded up the key details to know (or recall) before you sit down to watch the season 2 premiere.1. Summer School Starts NowSummer school will be big part of Courtney’s plight in the new season. So much so that the second year is even subtitled “Summer School” – a choice Johns joked was part of changing the episodic naming convention.“[In] the first season, every episode was named after one of the characters, one of our cast. I think we would have run out of characters by episode four or five [this season] or strained to do that,” Johns said. “And we wanted to shake it up. I wanted to do a subtitle like this with the Stargirl movie — like, the sequel to Stargirl.”As it happens, Johns was developing a feature with the character — one of his own contributions to the DC Comics library — for quite some time before the opportunity to make a series appeared.“It’s also is a lot easier to name the episodes once we decide on a subtitle,” he said. So, instead of individual episode titles, each is a chapter of the “Summer School” story. “We’re telling a serialized story — 13 chapters, rather than single episodes,” Johns explained. For Courtney’s part, that story begins with her eagerness to be Stargirl.“It gets her into trouble sometimes, like, how non-reluctant she is,” Bassinger said.  From the very beginning, she is looking for villains — looking for trouble — even though there are none, because she just loves being a superhero so freaking much. And it’s fun to have that.  Just as an actor, it’s fun to play such a positive person, because I feel like it brings positivity to me, too, personally.”Courtney will need that positivity as her eagerness leads to summer school and, of course, those villains she hoped to find.2. The Villains Take Stargirl to a Darker Place(Photo by The CW)In lieu of the Injustice Society, the majority of whom were defeated last year, Courtney and the JSA will face a darker form of villainy via two characters literally shrouded in darkness: Eclipso and The Shade (pictured). The latter, a shadow wielding Flash villain created by Gardner Fox and Harold Wilson Sharp in 1942, was a favorite of Stargirl producer James Dale Robinson – so much so, in fact, he spent much of the 1990s writing him as a sort of “anti-villain” in the pages of DC’s Starman comic book. Johns also said he pitched the character on the first day they began discussing the Stargirl TV series.“We never had plans to bring him into season 1, clearly, but we planted him in that mural with all the ISA. We wanted to elevate The Shade and make him feel special because he is a special character,” Johns said. “James took him in the ’90s and the 2000s and really gave him a personality and made him an interesting, complex character.”Johns was also pleased to find the character in the form of actor Jonathan Cake, who he said really “highlights” the layers of the character as developed by Robinson two-plus decades ago.(Photo by Tina Rowden/The CW )The other villain, Eclipso, is, “a demonic force in the same vein as a Freddy Krueger or a Pennywise,” according to Johns. The character, created by Bob Haney and Lee Elias in the 1963, evolved over the decades from petty villain into a force of darkness and evil who uses people s own regrets and doubts to control them. He also famously slaughtered an entire Justice League team. But for the purposes of Stargirl, at least as the season begins, he is a far more subtle presence voiced by Nick Tarabay. Although, both actor and character will eventually be seen in what Wilson described as a “really cool” costume (seen above in this first-look image).“When he finally does set foot in Blue Valley for real, and you see him manifest, it felt deserved, it felt scary, and it felt like everything had changed,” Johns added. The decision to focus on villains powered by darkness was a purposeful choice on the part of the production. As Johns explained, it was all about darkness versus light, which is very perfect for somebody like Stargirl. In terms of the characters, he felt it was important to “go up against something like that this season — something that gets inside their heads and tries to expose their fears and their regrets and their guilt and use it against them — and see if these heroes can rise up and stop it.”It means the show will shift in tone a bit, but Johns assured everyone Stargirl is still “the same show with the same characters that love each other and want to help each other at their core and want to be good and do good and love and be loved and still have humor and heart and all of that.”3. And the Darkness Within Will Come To Light(Photo by The CW)Since Eclipso preys on fear and regret, some of the personal stories only teased in the first season will get examined across the “Summer School” story. For Monreal’s character, Yolanda, there’s still all the weight of her actions before Courtney came to town. Add to that the consequences of killing Brainwave last season and a new dimension from which to examine it: her faith.“From the very start, Yolanda’s just really huge on her Catholicism,” Monreal explained. And with that background, the guilt she continues to feel can be interpreted as mortal sins — something which could make her susceptible to certain influences. “There’s all this judgment that she feels, especially after the mistake that she made and then after she killed Brainwave. It adds a psychological factor. And it’s like, do or die. She has to escape this psychological factor.”(Photo by Bob Mahoney/The CW)Meanwhile, Beth (Washington), still faces a strained relationship with her parents — based on their appearances in season 1, they don’t seem to like their energetic daughter very much. But Washington teased Beth’s parents will “learn a lot about Beth in the best ways.” She also said the most exciting element she cannot wait for viewers to see is the way Beth “learns what is her light and how she contributes to her team.”Rick (Gellman) still has a hard time feeling at ease in Blue Valley, but he may have bonded with a certain character from season 1 that will prove surprising. Oh, and that’s not a tease about a possible relationship between Rick and Beth. Although Johns said their friendship (or otherwise) is “very deep,” he also said “the slow developing romance[s] in the show is just part of the show. It’s the show’s storytelling.”It also proved an asset as the show went back into production amid COVID-19 lockdowns and safety protocols. Even the more casual intimacy had to be carefully coordinated to protect the actors. “We needed a rapid test right before a hug,” Smart said.“Now we fist bump and you just try and put that same emotion into it. I think we did OK,” Wilson quipped.Gellman felt the emphasis on ideas other than teen romance is one of the show s strengths: “[We] dig into everybody’s individual mission and challenge. [That might] get lost on the show if we were constantly looking at dating and breakups and feelings hurt and all of that.”4. Joel McHale Is Part of a Slow-Burn Storyline(Photo by The CW)As viewers will recall from the end of season 1, Joel McHale’s character, Starman Sylvester Pemberton, is seemingly not as dead as he appeared to be in the pilot. McHale will be seen in season 2, but Johns warned those in attendance that his appearances will be a part of a slow-burning storyline.“In the best comic books, I always loved the long brewing subplots. And the return of Starman, Sylvester Pemberton, is one of those,” he explained. Part of the brewing process is a flashback in episode 209 which features a “Justice Society flashback with the original members, with Luke and Joel and the other JSA founders.” This episode will also feature John Wesley Shipp as the Jay Garrick of Courtney’s Earth (aka “Earth-2” per the conclusion of the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event) — a version of the character he currently plays on The Flash.Shipp’s appearance is the first acknowledgement of just how close Stargirl is to the Arrowverse.“To have John play Jay Garrick, The Flash, in Stargirl connects our universe directly with the other shows and also shows that we’re part of a grander universe,” Johns said.  He also noted that maintaining the casting across the two programs also “opens up the door to opportunities for us to eventually interact with those characters. And that was important. Just like the comics.” From his comments on the matter, it was clear he is interested in continuing the Arrowverse crossover tradition — although he added, “when we eventually do do it, we’ll do it in a hopefully very special Stargirl way.”As for McHale? Johns teased there will be more of him in “the latter half of the season.”5. There Will Be a Third Season(Photo by The CW)Now that Stargirl is firmly a CW show — its first season was originally produced for the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service — it enjoys one of the network’s great benefits in an early season 3 renewal. As with “Summer School,” it will get a subtitle. Johns even said, “You’ll see by the end of season 2 what that is.”According to Johns, the writing team is hard at work on the scripts. We got picked up almost immediately for the third season. We didn’t have to wait for it to air. I think everybody’s super excited. And it’s helped us jump right back into it, he said. For me personally, there’s nothing else I’d rather do more than this. Stargirl returns on Tuesday, August 10 at 8/7C on The CW.皇冠体育在线This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Barbie, the Fletch reboot, and Guys and Dolls. This WEEK S TOP STORYKINGSMAN DIRECTOR RECRUITS STAR-STUDDED ENSEMBLE FOR ARGYLLE (Photo by David James/©Paramount)British director Matthew Vaughn has largely made a name for himself on movies based on comic books. After directing both Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, Vaughn returned to comic books again with Mark Millar s Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 75%), the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and the upcoming prequel The King s Man. Perhaps ready to start another possible new franchise, Matthew Vaughn is preparing to adapt the upcoming spy novel Argylle, and he has recruited an impressive ensemble cast. It appears that the title character, the world s greatest spy , will be played by Henry Cavill (who s previously appeared in the spy movies The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible Fallout). Cavill s Argylle co-stars will include Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherina O Hara, and, in her acting debut, pop star Dua Lipa.Other Top Headlines1. GRETA GERWIG TO DIRECT MARGOT ROBBIE S BARBIE FOR 2023 (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Some movies can get announced, developed, and produced within a couple of years, and other movies languish in development hell for years or even decades (and some never do get made). One such example of that is the live-action Barbie movie, which Mattel has been developing since at least 2009. To put that in perspective, in 2009, there were only two movies released in what we now know as the MCU (Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk), which includes dozens of movies now, while there still isn t a single Barbie. For a while, it looked like Amy Schumer or Anne Hathaway might star in Barbie, but eventually Margot Robbie came aboard. Warner Bros. has finally officially announced that Barbie will indeed start filming in early 2022 at Leavesden Studios in London, under the direction of Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%; Little Women, Certified Fresh at 95%). Back when Amy Schumer was (almost) involved, the Barbie movie was to be a fish out of water story about Barbie coming from her toy world to the real world, but Margot Robbie (who s also producing) and Gerwig are expected to have changed the premise, although it s not yet known to what.2. GUYS AND DOLLS TO BE REMADE BY DIRECTOR OF CHICAGO AND DREAMGIRLS (Photo by Everett Collection)Another project that has been kicking around development for well over a decade is the idea of a remake of the classic 1955 gangster musical Guys and Dolls (Fresh at 91%), which originally starred Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. To finally get the remake going, TriStar Pictures has enlisted the help of musical director Bill Condon, whose filmography includes the Broadway adaptations Chicago (Certified Fresh at 86%) and Dreamgirls (Certified Fresh at 78%), as well as The Greatest Showman (Rotten at  57%) and Disney s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast (Fresh at 71%). Over the years, several actors have considered taking on Guys and Dolls, including Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and most recently, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (and we should also note that since the movie isn t yet cast, it s still possible any of those actors could star in the movie when it eventually happens).3. MICHELLE WILLIAMS CAST AS HENRY VIII S FINAL WIFE IN HORROR FILM FIREBRAND (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)The life of England s King Henry VIII has long interested writers dating all the way back to Shakespeare, which has also resulted in dozens of movies about either his life or other people in his immediate orbit. Part of the fascination with Henry VIII has to do with the way he went through wives (spoiler: some were killed off), and now, Michelle Williams is set to star as Catherine Parr, Henry VIII s final wife, in a psychological horror film called Firebrand. The focus on Catherine Parr is a bit unusual, because Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour are typically the wives that both film and literature tend to focus on. It s also worth noting that Firebrand is described as psychological horror, which suggests that Henry VIII himself (who hasn t been cast yet) may be the film s villain.4. ZACK SNYDER IS READY FOR HIS OWN STAR WARS (SORT OF) (Photo by ©Netflix)Director Zack Snyder has risen to that rare level of fame where his name alone is a draw, as in Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 71%), though the irony of that title is that Justice League is obviously an adaptation of someone else s work. More recently, Snyder has been focusing his attention on projects for Netflix, starting with the zombie heist thriller Army of the Dead (Fresh at 68%) and continuing with the upcoming prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. For his latest Netflix project, Snyder appears to be setting his ambitious sights on the stars, as he will co-write, produce, and direct a sci-fi fantasy adventure called Rebel Moon, which is being compared to George Lucas original Star Wars. Rebel Moon will be about a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrant called Balisarius, leading them to recruit a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand. 5. JAVIER BARDEM TO VOICE LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE IN 2022 MUSICAL (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Movie adaptations of children s books are perhaps not as frequently discussed as say, comic book movies or remakes, but Hollywood has been steadily turning to them as a source for children s films since in the 1930s (and The Wizard of Oz). The latest is the 1965 picture book Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by Bernard Waber, which is now in production as a live-action/animated hybrid for release next year (7/22/2022). The role of the titular reptile (coincidentally announced in the same week that Alligator Loki is all the rage on Twitter) will be voiced by Spanish actor Javier Bardem, whose big budget franchise work has included such movies as Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Bardem will also soon be seen as King Triton in Disney s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The songwriting team of Benj Pasek Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) are currently working on original songs for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.6. MAD MEN STARS TO REUNITE FOR FLETCH REBOOT (Photo by Justina Mintz/©AMC)For fans of 1980s movies, the 1985 movie Fletch (Fresh at 77%) (and its sequel Fletch Lives) might be synonymous with the film s star, Chevy Chase, but the character actually first got his start as the star of a series of several novels by mystery author Gregory McDonald. There have been attempts to reboot Fletch in the decades since, with perhaps the project that came closest to actually happening being Kevin Smith s adaptation of the first novel, Fletch Won, in which Smith was hoping to cast Jason Lee (TV s My Name is Earl), but it didn t happen. Instead, it s Mad Men star Jon Hamm who is reviving Fletch with an ada

Watch: Co-writer Annie Mumolo and director Paul Feig on the making of Bridesmaids above. In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo and director Paul Feig remember the notorious food-poisoning scene and the fantasy sequence from the original script that it replaced. VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLTHE MOVIE: Bridesmaids (2011) 90%Few comedies have rocked the movie industry like Bridesmaids did back in 2011. From the first draft of the script to a South by Southwest debut that had Hollywood talking, to a mega opening weekend and multiple Oscar nominations, this was always going to be a special comedy for the beginning of the new decade. But what makes the story of out-of-luck bridesmaid Annie (Kristen Wiig) stand out from so many other buzzy and celebrated comedies is that its impact has lasted, and continues to this day – not just in the career boosts it gave its leads and director, but in the way it changed the playing field for female-driven comedies and the creative minds who wanted to make them. It all started, according to co-writer Annie Mumolo, with an exciting meeting with a Hollywood producer… that never ended up happening, and her own experience as a “perpetual bridesmaid.”“That planted the seed for us. We thought, ‘Oh, maybe we should write something together.’ Annie Mumolo:  Kristen [Wiig] and I had been writing and performing together at the Groundlings for years. We had an instant sort of chemistry there and we just had a lot of success with our sketches that we wrote together. So at one point a Hollywood producer approached us after a show and said, ‘You guys, you two have really good chemistry. I d love to have a meeting with you.’ At the same time, we had been talking about ‘maybe we should think of writing a movie sometime.’ And when he approached us we were very excited, [and] we exchanged information. Then we called him and he never called us back. That was it – I don t know. A bizarre thing. But it kind of planted the seed for us. We thought, ‘Oh maybe we should write something together.’ Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (who featured in a scene) in Bridesmaids (Photo by Suzanne Hanover/©Universal Pictures)“Everyone I knew was getting married. All my cousins and friends. And I was a perpetual bridesmaid.”Mumolo: At the same time, everyone I knew was getting married. All my cousins and friends. And I was a perpetual bridesmaid. I was encountering all kinds of characters in my adventures. So we started talking about that idea and that was where it started. One moment that I think the whole emotional anchor of the movie came from was a moment [at my friend’s] wedding reception. You know how there s that big dramatic run out of the building, and they get into their car and drive away? And everyone s celebrating? I remember my last friend that got married, and the feeling I had as they ran out, got into their car – it was this very deep feeling of being left behind. I just remember standing there. You re very happy for them, and you want this to be happening to them, but you have this complicated sort of feeling. Because it makes you question, ‘Am I doing what I should be doing?’ “Within five minutes I got a call from Judd saying, ‘Alright we re going to do this.’”Paul Feig:  It was in 2007, I was working on another movie and Judd [Apatow, who produced Bridesmaids] called me up and said, ‘Hey, we re doing a reading of this script that Kristen Wiig wrote.’ Kristen had just been in a movie I did called Unaccompanied Minors, and it was the first time she had ever been in a movie and I just loved her. I thought she was so funny, so I went to that script read. (One of the ironies is that Melissa McCarthy was one of the people reading, but she was reading other roles; she wasn t even reading that role.) I d always been wanting to do much more female-led comedy and projects in general, so after the read we all gave Kristen and Annie a bunch of notes and all that. Then I was busy with my movie, and then I would check in with Judd about that one occasionally, and he was, ‘Oh we re not sure what s going on yet,’ and then a year-and-a-half later he basically said, ‘It looks like it’s dead.’ [I said] ‘That s such a bummer because it was such a great chance to have all these great women [in a film together].’ Then it was 2010 when I got a call from my agent saying that that movie was actually going to go. They put me on list of possible directors to Judd and within five minutes I got a call from him saying, ‘Alright we re going to do this.’ Paul Feig and Kristen Wiig on the set (Photo by Suzanne Hanover/ ©Universal Pictures)“I believed so strongly from the beginning there was an audience for this. I just knew it.”Mumolo: All women that I know are very, very funny in their own way. And we really wanted to tap into that. I believed so strongly from the beginning there was an audience for this. I just knew it. And so did Judd. I remember there was an article I found, like in Entertainment Weekly or something, at some point, that said women make up to 60% of the moviegoing audience and yet there were no movies [being made for them]. This was back then; there were not a lot of movies that featured women. The women always in comedy tend to be sort of just an accessory: The wife holding a tray of lemonade, and [saying], ‘Honey, you re not going to go be crazy again are you? Uh-oh. The sort of baking, no-opinion woman who just stands there and holds lemonade. Or is always just watching her crazy, funny male partner have all the fun and be funny. But that was because you write what you know. And when men are writing movies, they write what they know. So we really just wrote what we knew. We didn t set out to make any grand statements or anything. We just felt like this should be done. So we did it. THE MOMENT: Food Poisoning Strikes at the Bridal StoreFeig recalls clearly the gory details of Bridesmaids’s most infamous scene – in which, after eating at a Brazilian restaurant chosen by Annie in an effort to upstage her rival Helen (Rose Byrne), the bride and her bridesmaids are struck down by food poisoning and proceed to s—t and vomit all over the bathroom of an upscale bridal store (and in one case, on the street outside). The filmmakers designed a pristine white set on which to stage the carnage, and made buckets of vomit from oatmeal, chopped peas, carrots, and other vegetables for maximum gross-out effect. It was to be the movie’s big “water cooler” moment, and it was one that was both hilarious and groundbreaking – these were comic actresses going for it in the kind of scene only men had been allowed to play in the past. But it was a somewhat controversial sequence behind the scenes: the dress-shop moment played out very differently in Wiig and Mumolo’s original script – no oatmeal was required – and the two writers were not eager to change directions. At least at first.“Naturally she sees Christian Bale there, who’s chopping wood without a shirt on…”Mumolo: We had a fantasy sequence where they go into the dress shop, and Kristen s character tries on this dress and she has this fantasy that when she wears this dress, she s all of a sudden in a castle. And all the men at the wedding are fawning over her. There s so many of them wanting her so badly [that] just to escape from the castle she goes running out into this field and runs into the forest. And she naturally sees Christian Bale there, who’s chopping wood without a shirt on. And they end up on a bearskin rug, and he was combing her hair, and it was this expansive sequence of her little love affair with Christian Bale. In the meantime, [back in the real world] Helen gets the women to get the dress she wants because Annie is caught up in her fantasy. So that was the original [scene]. And then I think Judd said at one point we ll never get Christian Bale to do this. And then we tried to put in Matt Damon and then we re like, As if we re going to get Matt Damon to do this.’ He was concerned we weren t going to get anybody to do it. And also he felt it needed harder comedy there, rather than what we had. So, we sadly let that go. We did not want to let that go. We loved that sequence. (Photo by Suzanne Hanover/ ©Universal Pictures)“This sequence doesn’t have enough hard comedy.”Feig:  [The scene] was very funny but when we were in the re-write process, we all kind of felt like well maybe there s something that s a little more real-world that we can do with this that doesn t involve a fantasy sequence. It just came from a lot of talk about, ‘Well, what is her problem?’ Her problem is she doesn t have any money but she s trying to keep up with Helen and trying to look like she can outdo or match Helen and all these opulent things that Helen is doing for Lillian [played by Maya Rudolph]. And it just became, ‘Well what if she overextends herself and takes them to a restaurant that s cheap but she passes it off as being a great place?’ Mumolo:  I think what Judd said was, ‘This sequence doesn t have enough hard comedy.’ It was a Friday night, and we had until Monday. He said, ‘Go write something that ends with they all get food poisoning and Megan s ts in the sink.’ I think [that] is what he said. Of course, when you hear something that way … it’s not going to sit well in the beginning. We went off and did our version. We had to sort of bring the female perspective into how a woman would deal with having food poisoning and trying to cover it up. On the day we started shooting it, while we were shooting it, we started feeling much more at peace with it. We both felt much more relieved, seeing how Paul handled it and seeing his approach to it. And Judd said we re going to shoot many versions of this, from the most conservative to the most – what s the word – the most extreme. “The funniest thing was just how everybody handles it up until the point when it all falls apart.”Feig:  I know when that idea was come up with, Kristen was kind of like, ‘Wait what? What s going to happen?’ Because – very rightfully so – she was nervous that Judd and I, two guys who come from the  rough and tumble world of comedy, were going to turn it into a guy s version of a woman s movie. And that s a very, very real concern. But we always just told her… this is the emotional reason why this is here and so this will illustrate this point in a very funny way and also in a way that will showcase her comedy. We wanted a big, physical water cooler scene set piece, as they call it in comedy, that could be super funny and active and really get some attention. But also none of us wanted to do a scene which is just going to be mayhem for mayhem s sake. To us the funniest thing was just how everybody handles it up until the point when it all falls apart. Will [Annie] admit to her enemy that she did something wrong? And so that s really what that scene s about. It could ve easily just been, oh everybody s throwing up and s tting and all of that, and shot at crazy wide angle lenses and just going far, far, far. But it just wouldn t have been funny without being grounded by the fact that there s Annie in the middle of it as everything is falling apart around her and all the evidence points to the fact that she really screwed up badly and she just won t admit it. Wiig with Rose Byrne who played Helen (Photo by Suzanne Hanover/ ©Universal Pictures)“It took about eight or nine test screenings to get the exact math right.”Feig: We shot more sequences, too, where Becca [Ellie Kemper] runs in and finds everybody and the bathroom s full with everybody throwing up, [and] she goes running down the hall thinking there s another bathroom at the end and runs into Whitney – the woman who runs the dress shop – throws opens the door of her office thinking it s a bathroom and projectile vomits across this pristine, white office. And all over this wedding photo of Whitney and her husband. That was one of the first ones we cut out because when we put the sequence together, we re like OK, that s just a bridge too far. At that, we re just settling, just letting the grossness drive us and not the emotional underpinning. But honestly it took about eight or nine test screenings to get the exact math right on that dress shop sequence, because there was some we let go a little too long and others we made too short. It was really having to discover how far we could push the audience without them turning on us. We found we could actually push them pretty far. THE IMPACT: Turning on the Green lightBridesmaids earned 8 million at the global box office and picked up two Oscar nominations: one for Melissa McCarthy for her star-making turn as Megan, and one for co-writers Mumolo and Wiig for Best Original Screenplay. Those numbers and accolades are rarely seen for R-rated comedies – particularly those with scenes that require so much oatmeal. But it’s those numbers that shook the industry. With Bridesmaids proving false the long-held assumption that female-led comedies couldn’t make money, there was a shift. Blockers, Girls’ Trip, Rough Night, Pitch Perfect, Spy, The Heat, and more films would follow; movies where strong friendships took center stage and romance was absent or secondary, movies where women could be flawed, and real, and funny. Many would say the shift hasn’t been big enough, but Bridesmaids showed many in power what Mumolo had known all along: there was an audience for this movie and more like it. We jumped in the car and drove to the ArcLight in Hollywood and found a packed theater just absolutely rocking with laughter.”Feig: Our budget was .5 million and we were told we had to make million opening weekend or else we d be considered a failure. We were tracking to make million and so I was walking around that week just despondent. It was only [better] as the matinees went on [opening] Friday, when the calls starting coming in like, ‘Well it s actually looking more like 15’ and then, ‘Oh well maybe it might be 17.’ I invited Melissa and her husband Ben [Falcone] over to our house for dinner. The four of us, with my wife, we’re all sitting around having dinner as day went into evening and I started getting emails – ‘Well it s actually looking like million,’ then

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new titles like The Bodyguard, Wonka, and a whopping seven Marvel movies. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARVEL NOW HAS SEVEN MOVIES SCHEDULED FOR 2023 AND 2024(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Marvel fans continue to wait patiently (and sometimes, not so patiently) for official word about when Marvel Studios will finally start releasing Fantastic Four and X-Men movies after the rights to do so transitioned to Marvel following the Disney/Fox deal in 2019. We still don t have specific deals for any of those movies, but there are now so many mystery movies on Marvel s slate that fair money suggests they might be coming soon. That s because Marvel announced four release dates in 2024 for untitled mystery movies this week, on February 16th, May 3rd, July 26th, and November 8th. Those four movies, whatever they are, join another three mystery films scheduled for 2023 on July 28th, October 6th, and November 10th. Of those seven movies, there are a few known feature films that we can guess might be included (that don t have dates yet), such as Blade, Captain America 4 (starring Anthony Mackie), Deadpool 3, and Fantastic Four. The first X-Men movie could also be among those seven, and that would still leave two more slots for something else (perhaps New Avengers or Shang-Chi 2). Whatever these seven movies are, they will be coming out after Eternals (11/5/2021), Spider-Man: No Way Home (12/17/2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (7/8/2022), The Marvels (11/11/2022), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2/17/2023), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3  (5/5/2023). You can read here for a full breakdown of everything coming in the MCU, as well as key details for each project.Other Top Headlines1. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN TAKES HIS TALENTS TO UNIVERSAL FOR HIS ATOMIC BOMB MOVIE(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)Not counting his first two feature films (Following and Memento), Christopher Nolan has spent the majority of his career directing films for Warner Bros., including three Batman movies and, most recently, Dunkirk and Tenet. It was over Tenet that Nolan had a falling out with Warner Bros. that included Nolan referring to HBO Max as the worst streaming service. It was in that light that the news broke last week that Nolan was in the process of shopping around his next film, a drama about atomic bomb innovator J. Robert Oppenheimer. That search came to a quick end this week with the news that Nolan landed the project at Universal Pictures with an eye towards filming starting as soon as the first quarter of 2022. The deal between Nolan and Universal came with several stipulations, including a 0 million budget, a 100-day theatrical window (in a time when most movies are only getting 30 or 45 days, or none at all), 20 percent of the first dollar gross, and a blackout period of three weeks before and after during which Universal will not release another film. (And as this article implies, Nolan presumably won t be disparaging Peacock anytime soon.)2. DISNEY COMMITS TO THEATERS FOR ETERNALS, ENCANTO, WEST SIDE STORY AND OTHERS (Photo by Marvel Studios)As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a dampening effect on theatrical box office, one strategy studios attempted this year (most notably by Warner Bros./HBO Max and Disney/Disney+) was to debut their films day and date both theatrically and on streaming. Over the Labor Day weekend, Disney attempted a different approach with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the result was a record-breaking million. Apparently based on that success (relative to the impact of COVID-19) and, presumably, to avoid any other potential Scarlett Johansson situations Walt Disney Pictures confirmed this week that several of their upcoming 2021 films will be released exclusively in theaters for either 45 or 30 days. The animated musical Encanto (11/24/2021) will have a 30 day window, while most of the others, including The Last Duel (10/15/2021), Ron s Gone Wrong (10/22/2021), Marvel s Eternals (11/5/2021), Steven Spielberg s West Side Story (12/10/2021), and the spy prequel The King s Man (12/22/2021) will all have 45 day exclusive windows before going to streaming.3. KEEGAN-MICHAEL KEY JOINS TIMOTHEE CHALAMET S WONKA PREQUEL (Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Netflix)We re still a month away from Dune (Fresh at 88%) being released (in the USA), but star Timothée Chalamet is already preparing to star in another big budget movie for Warner Bros. After years of speculation, Chalamet was ultimately the actor who landed the lead role in Wonka, the prequel about the earlier life of Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This week, Jordan Peele s comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key became the prequel s second cast member, though we don t know what role he will play (certainly not an Oompa-Loompa). Wonka will be directed by Paul King, who is coming to the prequel with impressive critical acclaim following his work on both Paddington (Certified Fresh at 97%) and Paddington 2 (Certified Fresh at 99%). Warner Bros. has scheduled Wonka for release on St. Patrick s Day, March 17, 2023.4. WILDWOOD TO BE NEXT STOP-MOTION ANIMATED FILM FROM LAIKA(Photo by Laika Studios)It generally takes years for a movie to be developed and produced, but it s especially lengthy, on average, with animation. Consider, for example, the news back in 2011 that LAIKA, the stop-motion company behind movies like Coraline (Certified Fresh at 90%) and Kubo and the Two Strings (Certified Fresh at 97%), was developing a movie called Wildwood. To put things in perspective, in 2011, Coraline was the company s only released film, preceding ParaNorman in 2012, The Boxtrolls in 2014, Kubo and the Two Strings in 2016, and Missing Link in 2019. Wildwood was finally confirmed this week as being LAIKA s next stop-motion film, with company co-founder Travis Knight directing (after taking a detour to direct Bumblebee, Certified Fresh at 90%). The Hansel Gretel-reminiscent film will be an adaptation of the first book in the Wildwood fantasy children s novel series by Colin Meloy, who is also the lead singer of the indie band The Decemberists.5. TONY-WINNING PLAYWRIGHT REMAKING WHITNEY HOUSTON S THE BODYGUARD(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Naomi Ackie, who played Jannah in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will soon star as pop star Whitney Houston in the biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody (12/23/2022), which could lead to a resurgence in fan interest in her music and legacy. Houston s biggest starring role in a movie was 1992 s The Bodyguard (Rotten at 32%) (opposite Kevin Costner as the title character), and a remake has been in development at Warner Bros. since 2011. The remake got a new shot of creativity this week as the Tony-winning playwright Matthew Lopez (The Inheritance) has come aboard to start a new rewrite draft. According to Variety, some of the pairings that have been considered for the remake include Thor: Ragnarok stars Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth, and Cardi B and Channing Tatum. Another possibility might be Lizzo, who took to TikTok this week to respond to fans who fancast her in the remake (opposite Chris Pine). Warner Bros. has made no  official casting announcements as of yet.6. VEEP CO-STAR SAM RICHARDSON IS CHRIS PRATT S STRANDED ASSET (Photo by Glen Wilson/©Paramount Pictures)Sam Richardson is an actor who joined HBO s Veep in season 3 and recently co-starred with Chris Pratt in the Amazon Prime sci-fi action movie The Tomorrow War (Rotten at 52%) and the video game adaptation Werewolves Within (Certified Fresh at 86%). Now, Richardson is signed to star in an action comedy called Stranded Asset for Universal Pictures, which Pratt is producing via his Indivisible Production company. The premise is being kept under wraps, but the title itself suggests something possibly involving an intelligence asset who is stranded somewhere dangerous, but that s just this writer s guess. Stranded Asset was written by screenwriter Jen D Angelo, who also wrote several episodes of Workaholics (Fresh at 86%) and has the sequel Hocus Pocus 2 coming soon on Disney+.7. MARC MARON IS YOUR NEXT LEX LUTHOR (IN DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS)(Photo by Erica Parise/©Netflix)Comedian and podcasting innovator Marc Maron had a supporting role in Joaquin Phoenix s Joker, and now he s getting his own chance to play the archenemy of one of DC s major superheroes. Maron will provide the voice of Lex Luthor in next year s DC League of Super-Pets (5/20/2022), joining an animated voice cast that already includes Dwayne Johnson (Krypto the Super-Dog), Kevin Hart (Ace the Bat-Hound), Keanu Reeves, Vanessa Bayer, Jameela Jamil, John Krasinski, Diego Luna, Natasha Lyonne, and Kate McKinnon. Maron broke the news on his podcast in his latest episode with guest Steve Buscemi.8. TRACY MORGAN JOINS TRIPLETS AS LONG-LOST BROTHER OF DEVITO AND SCHWARZENEGGER(Photo by Christopher Polk/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images)It was nearly ten years ago that we first heard about a sequel to Twins (Rotten at 43%) called Triplets entering development, with both Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning and their long-lost third brother to be played by Eddie Murphy. Murphy apparently dropped out some time ago, but the producers have finally found their third Triplets star in another Saturday Night Live alumnus, Tracy Morgan. Triplets will start filming in the Boston area in January, 2022, and the project is currently being shopped around at the Toronto International Film Festival market looking for distribution deals. Twins director Ivan Reitman, whose son Jason Reitman recently directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife (11/19/2021), will also direct Triplets. In related news, Shadowhunters star Dominic Sherwood recently wrapped filming of the direct-to-video Eraser: Reborn, a reboot of the 1996 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie Eraser (Rotten at 38%).On an Apple device? The blanks, as it happens, also offer Heller a format steeped in DC Comics lore without masks and superpowers.“I love superheroes, [but] I don t really know how to write them,” he said. “Alfred is a real person. Him and Commissioner Gordon, they re kind of human beings in the canon.”Their humanity in the face of theatrical villains and masked vigilantes made them great anchors for television series set in wilder worlds. Although, the wildness of Pennyworth is based less in the superhero tradition and more in a British mode, which is fitting for the character. For fellow executive producer Danny Cannon – who also worked on Gotham – the blanks in Alfred’s story allowed him to try something different: a DC show set in 1960s London.“[It is] a place that both myself and Bruno knew rather well,” he explained. “[We] also had a vision on what that world should feel and sound like. Alfred was uniquely suited to open that world up.Their vision of a DC Comics London will be one of the things viewers will immediately note about the show, both in its style and the way it offers clues to the story under Alfred’s feet. Small anachronistic details creep into the margins and the sort of “nevertime” Gotham used starts to appear.“It s as if it s sort of a dream London where anything, any point in the history of the country, can be there, but anchored in the ’60s,” Heller said. And as Alfred finds himself pulled deeper into Thomas world, a very specific event in British history seems drawn into the setting.(Photo by Epix)But first, we need to talk about Bet Sykes. Played by Paloma Faith, the dedicated contract killer immediately takes possession of any scene she appears in. For Faith, the character as written by Heller reminded her of people she knew.“Growing up in London, there had been a couple of times in my early life where I ve actually met real gangsters, and their wives have this very distinctive, very nuanced way  usually, they re very glamorous and empowered, but majorly insecure at the same time,” she explained. “So, it was like kind of trying to channel that. They were always a bit threatening.”When viewers first meet Bet, that threatening edge will be immediately apparent, but they will soon discover a gentle side to the character as well.“She s got a very sort of distinct differentiation between when she s at work and when she s not at work,” Faith said. “Having had a career that s very public myself as a musician, I can really empathize with that idea of putting on your work face and putting on your home face. That played into the way that I played her.”And just as Gotham humanized the Riddler, Barbara Keen, and other seemingly manic foes, Bet quickly becomes a layered and interesting character.“She s still a human being,” Faith said. “[She] craves human touch, and connection, and to be understood.”(Photo by Epix)The show’s willingness to give Bet that depth makes her something of a mirror to Alfred – right down to their willingness to commit violence.“I think it s something that will always be with him,” Bannon said. “I think he s grown up, essentially, in the Army, his formative years anyway. And it s a little bit like a strange addiction. He knows it s bad for him, but he keeps being drawn back.”“I also think they re all quite desensitized in the world of this as well, because it is a violent world,” added Faith. “So, [it’s] their perception, and then we have to sort of shift ours when we view it.”And as Faith’s comments suggest, Pennyworth is more violent and graphic than most of its DC-inspired cousins (Swamp Thing comes close). To Heller, reaching for a new level of on-screen violence was an important evolution.“There’s an honesty when you portray violence, as shocking as it is, to make it shocking,” he explained. “That s what violence is really like.”As opposed to the comical sound effects of Batman ’66 or the relative bloodlessness of network shows, Heller said the violence and its implications were important to convey and establish early.“What happens is you bleed, you die,” he said. “It s not meant to be sensational. It s just meant to be true to both the sensibility of the myth and the reality of violence.”Despite the violence on display in the series, Pennyworth is filled with humor – from the absurd to the driest of quips worthy of Batman’s butler. It was an element of the show which surprised the cast once they began to see finished episodes.“I know the jokes were there,” Aldridge said, “but there were other moments I hadn t read as funny at all.”In the first episode, some of these moments involve a gun-toting granny, the owner of the club where Alfred and Thomas meet, and a very unusual torturer.“Alfred says at one point, ‘Life is either a tragedy or a comedy, and I prefer to have a laugh.’ And that s kind of true,” Heller said when asked about juggling the show’s grimmer moments and funnier elements. “There has to be light, because on one level it s a very bleak and dark view of the world. So without shafts of light, you ve just got darkness as opposed to shadows and light.”“For me, when I think about being British, the most proudest thing about it is the humor, for me,” Faith added. “So it s so important that it s in there.”(Photo by Epix)Which brings us back to the question – why make a series about Batman’s butler? Because he offers a uniquely British story to the DC Universe, one that also features an examination of British class struggles.“I feel like in America, you re kind of raised to believe that whichever class you come from, you can achieve anything,” Faith said. “I remember being sort of the 17-year-old literature student, being like, Oh, the American Dream — like, never heard of the possibility until then of being able to actually sort of contradict the class you were born into.”In the British tradition, social mobility is much harder. And into the 1960s, it was something parents actively discouraged their children from attempting.“The ’60s was the first time where people were starting to live their own lives and have their own ideas, and Alfred is the perfect guy to break away from the military and from their old-school way of thinking,” Cannon said. “He s filled with optimism and a new energy, and he s looking towards the future.”Nonetheless, Alfred will face obstacles in finding that future simply because of the station he was born into.“One of the things that you notice when looking at past portrayals of Alfred is that, to a degree, Michael Caine was the first guy who played the character as he would be in real life – which is working class,” Heller said. “And that servant class was always in a weird, anomalous position of serving the upper classes, but never being able to cross that line. Alfred is someone who has lived his own life and does not want to be servile, does not want to be dependent on the largess of the aristocracy. So that conflict is built into the character.”“It s a strong theme in our show, and a strong theme in British culture in general,” Faith added. The conflict will also be writ large in the series as tensions in the country lead to sectarian violence and the potential for a British Civil War, the event seemingly imported from history into the 1960s of Pennyworth.(Photo by Epix)At the same time, Bannon admitted that Alfred is “blown away by his new wealthy American associate, Thomas: He talks differently, he looks different — [Alfred has] never really seen anyone like that.”Thomas movie-star quality may offer some clue as to why Alfred will ultimately become a butler and work for the Waynes. Granted, it will take more than good looks and a seemingly endless supply of cash to bond Thomas and Alfred for all time — but then, that is the story the series is setting out to tell while also sowing the seeds of a class war.And as all moderns series consider their conclusion from day one, the cast and producers of Pennyworth jokingly suggested its natural endpoint will either be the birth of Bruce Wayne or his conception. Although, Faith suggested Bruce’s birth could come with a further revelation.“I d love to see Jack dressed as a baby coming out of Martha,” she joked. “Alfred s actually his dad, and you re [playing] the baby!”“That s very meta and crazy: Me in a little bonnet,” Bannon said.Pennyworth premieres July 28 at 9 p.m. on Epix. Like this? And that has never starred in Indian-American girl.”In the interview, Fisher also shares why she and Kaling decided to anchor the story in grief and darkness – something that working with Netflix allowed them the freedom to do – and how they managed to convince famous curmudgeon John McEnroe to sign on as the voice inside Devi’s head.Watch the full interview above or at Netflix s FYSEE TV site.Never Have I Ever is streaming now on Netflix. Fan Favorite Actresses 2020Last year, Scarlett Johansson ran away with the Fan Favorite Actress award by tallying nearly a third of all the votes cast, and we weren t certain anything similar would happen this year, just because it seemed the competition was too good. Maria Bakalova came out of nowhere to stun everyone in Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm; Carey Mulligan, Frances McDormand, and Viola Davis all powered films to potential Oscar glory; and Anya Taylor-Joy became a household name with a trio of titles, including the massively popular The Queen s Gambit. As it turns out, Zendaya actually managed to thwart them all by matching Scarlett Johansson s impressive win last year. The star of HBO s Euphoria became the youngest winner of the Lead  Actress Emmy for her role in the series and starred in the filmed-in-quarantine drama Malcolm Marie, earning 31% of all votes in our poll. The order below reflects the number of total votes cast for each actor by users in a poll that ran on RT from March 10 to April 13.« Previous Category Next Category »ZendayaThe singer-turned-actress not only found time during quarantine to make a movie (Malcolm Marie), but she also became the youngest Emmy winner in the Lead Actress category for her outstanding work on HBO s Euphoria.Anya Taylor-JoyAnya Taylor-Joy has been ready to break out in a big way for a couple years now, and 2020 gave her the opportunity to flex her versatility in a period piece (Emma.), a superhero movie (The New Mutants), and a wildly popular miniseries about a chess prodigy (The Queen s Gambit).Margot RobbieMoving up one spot from her fourth place finish in last year s poll, Robbie proved without a doubt that she was the best thing about the 2016 Suicide Squad movie, as she headlined 2020 s Birds of Prey in all its candy-colored glory.Carey MulliganMulligan blew the doors wide open with her performance in Emerald Fennell s Promising Young Woman, helping the film to earn five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Actress nod for herself.Sarah PaulsonSarah Paulson has been one of the most dependable character actresses of her generation, and in 2020 she was the face of malicious intent in the psychological thiller Run and the Netflix series Ratched.« Previous Category Next Category » 纵观如今的游戏市场来说,手游市场的发展前景是非常可观的,这一点相信大家都是有目共睹的,也不存在什么没前途、行情不好这样的说法。

(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)This fall marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Zombieland, the well-reviewed horror comedy that entertained while instructing how to survive a zombie apocalypse. This fall will also see the long-awaited release of the hit movie’s sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap. That’s right, it’s time to nut up or shut up again and follow our favorite city-named characters as they re-kill some undead and maybe even search for more Twinkies. What’s in store for Columbus and the rest of the gang? What have they been up to this past decade? Will they accidentally murder anymore Hollywood icons? Here’s everything we know about the follow-up so far. What s Taken So Long?(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Ten years is a long wait for a sequel to a movie as popular as Zombieland, which grossed more than 0 million worldwide back in 2009. Everyone seemed ready to do another one soon afterward, but the usual Hollywood hurdles got in the way, some of them rather positive. The filmmakers and cast have all had a good and busy decade since the release of the original.Jesse Eisenberg became an Oscar nominee. Woody Harrelson, who had previously been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, earned a couple more nominations for Best Supporting Actor. Emma Stone was not only nominated for two Oscars herself, but actually won one for Best Actress in 2016, and she was just nominated for a third time. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick hit it big with Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Director Ruben Fleischer did a few more movies, including last year’s box office hit Venom, and a lot of television.(Photo by Official Zombieland Twitter)As it turns out, this was perfect timing for the cast of Zombieland to return for a sequel, if only for the fact that they could promote the project through a popular meme. On January 29, the official Zombieland Twitter account revealed the new title for the sequel in a tweet that also featured a new poster, with Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone, and Breslin recreating the one-sheet for the original. The image of them all older — and in Breslin’s case, taller — is a perfect entry in the #10YearChallenge trend of comparing how we look now with our 2009 selves. Also, this isn’t the first return to Zombieland. Back in 2013, Amazon Studios debuted a pilot for Zombieland: The TV Series alongside 13 other pilots and asked viewers to help decide which series would be picked up. Unfortunately, fans weren’t into the small-screen version of Zombieland, which was scripted by Reese and Wernick but featured a new cast, and Amazon opted not to produce any more episodes. “You guys successfully hated it out of existence,” Reese tweeted at the time.Everyone Is Excited to Be Back(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Despite all the success and elevated prestige the cast and creators have experienced in the last decade, everyone is back on board for this crazy ride. Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone, and Breslin will reprise their respective roles as Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock. And Fleischer is again at the helm, directing another script by Reese and Wernick, who are this time joined by The Expendables writer Dave Callaham. When Sony greenlit the sequel last summer, studio president Sanford Panitch said of the reunion: “No one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”Fleischer himself also spoke excitedly to Fandango last fall as he was prepping for the sequel. “I m thrilled,” he said. “I’ve been scouting and storyboarding and getting it going, and to get to work with that cast again is just an absolute dream come true. It s been really exciting starting to think about that movie, and to get to work with Emma, Jesse, Woody, and Abigail once again is truly a dream come true. Yeah, we re just at the very early stages, but we have an amazing script, and we re going to start shooting in Georgia in January.” Whatever the full synopsis and cast list entails, they’re up and running as of now filming began for Zombieland: Double Tap on January 21, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia.New Locations, New Friends, and New Zombies(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)What is the foursome up to this time around? The plot is being kept under wraps, of course, but does it really matter what the story is? All a Zombieland sequel needs to have is more hilarious zombie action and horror — not too complicated. We do know that Zombieland: Double Tap will involve another trek through the United States of Zombieland, however, this time taking the gang from the White House to the former American heartland. The film will also feature some new players in the game of zombie bashing, and yes, they’re also all nicknamed after places special to them. Rising star Zoey Deutch is Madison. Avan Jogia (TV’s Victorious) is a bad boy musician named Berkeley. And Rosario Dawson is Nevada. Hopefully we learn why her moniker is an entire state rather than a city.According to sparse details spreading about the premise of the sequel, Berkeley will be a love interest for Breslin’s Little Rock, who has separated from the rest of her group, and Nevada is a zombie hunter who connects with Eisenberg’s Columbus after some drama between him and Stone s Wichita further splits up the original cast.(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Meanwhile, as the four main characters have managed to stay alive for a decade by hunkering down in the presidential home, the hordes outside have also been surviving. According to reports of the plot, the gang will be facing “new kinds of zombies,” including smarter and stealthier varieties. I mean, it s been 10 years, so who knows what the world will look like at this point? Fleischer hinted to Fandango last fall. While it’s unconfirmed if Bill Murray will also return for the sequel as “himself,” rumor has it that his old Ghostbusters co-star and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Dan Aykroyd will make a cameo this time around as “Dan Aykroyd.” Would that mean we could look forward to Ernie Hudson or Sigourney Weaver in Zombieland 3?It ll Be Worth the Wait(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Ten years is a long time to wait for a sequel, and anticipation has just been building and building. Will it meet our expectations? Certainly there’s no pleasing everyone, but the decade delay has hopefully been for the best. Fleischer thinks so, as he told LRM last month: I think collectively we all felt very strongly that the only circumstance we’d be willing to make the movie is if it’s as good or better than the original. And none of us were willing to compromise on the quality of the movie. We worked on the script real hard to make sure that it was up to par with the original. And so, that was just a stipulation that we were all completely on the same page about. I’m proud to say I think our script is really great, in that the movie will be as good as the original if not better, and that’s why we’re all back. Zombieland: Double Tap  is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 11, 2019.
