The movie is less than a year away from release, but it was only this week that we found out the voice cast will include Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Sam Rockwell, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson. In related news, Searchlight Pictures announced this week that their previously-untitled murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan will be called See How They Run, and it will be release sometime in 2022.7. MYSTERIOUS PREDATOR PREQUEL SKULL COMPARED TO SURVIVAL THRILLER THE REVENANT(Photo by Fox/Everett Collection)10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is currently about 75% finished filming his next project, which was confirmed this week to be titled Skull. What that title doesn t tell you is that the film is actually a prequel to a fan favorite sci-fi action franchise: It will tell the story of the the alien hunters from the Predator series in a survival thriller set some time in the past that s being compared to the The Revenant. The only known Skull cast member right now is Amber Midthunder (Legion, The Ice Road), who was reportedly cast as a Comanche warrior woman who is forced to fight a Predator.8. THE CHI STAR JOINS HOUSE PARTY REMAKE AFTER CAST SHAKEUP (Photo by Showtime)Hollywood s remake fever has nearly run out of ideal properties from the 1980s, so the trend is starting to move more and more towards revisiting the 1990s (and by the end of the 2020s, we ll probably start seeing lots of remakes from the 2000s). After several years of development, New Line Cinema is ready to start filming their remake of the 1990 Kid n Play comedy hit House Party. Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair from Doctor Who) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr (Bumblebee) had been cast in April, but Lendeborg reportedly recently dropped out to focus on his mental well-being. His role will instead go to Jacob Latimore of the Showtime series The Chi. The original House Party was an ensemble comedy, so this remake probably will be as well, but none of those roles have been announced yet.9. SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER BLACK WIDOW STREAMING STRATEGY(Photo by Marvel Studios)Walt Disney Pictures received criticism for their decision to stream Black Widow day-and-date with the theatrical release, which has resulted in s its international box office looking like it will to end up about where Scarlett Johansson s Lucy (3 million) did far below most MCU films. Johansson took on the issue directly this week by filing a lawsuit against Disney, accusing the studio over a breach of contract. Key to Johansson s suit is that her contract was based on bonuses from the box office performance of Black Widow, which the lawsuit alleges were significantly reduced because of the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+.  Disney responded by calling the lawsuit sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johansson s agent replied to that as being a direct attack on her character. More reactions can be read here. What is unclear is how this lawsuit will impact  Johansson s future dealings with both Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, where for example, she had just recently developing a movie project based on the Walt Disney Theme Parks attraction Tower of Terror. On an Apple device? Beloved canceled-too-soon series can often find a second life after they re released on a streaming service or home entertainment platform, but rarely do passionate online fandoms translate to a show being resurrected more than half a decade after its initial cancellation. Luckily, Young Justice: Outsiders, which begins its third season January 4 on DC Universe, is one of those rare programs to find its way back to the air. And as lead character designer Phil Bourassa told Rotten Tomatoes recently, “timing, the fandom, and social media” kept its spirit alive and enabled its resurrection.Young Justice debuted on Cartoon Network in 2010 and featured a different take on the teen sidekicks of the DC Superheroes. Robin, a new version of Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis formed a covert group aiding the Justice League while being trained by Black Canary. As the season progressed, the group added more members. In the show s second year, the story jumped forward two years to follow a new covert team, while the original group found their places in the Justice League. Both groups would continue to grow and change as a storyline featuring classic DC villains Vandal Savage and Darkseid led to a surprising cliffhanger. And then Cartoon Network pulled the plug.(Photo by DC Universe)“Our boss [Warner Bros. Animation executive vice president of creative affairs] Sam Register told us that we created the perfect show for streaming, we just did it five years too early,” Bourassa said. “We always thought that was funny, because it is sort of designed to be consumed in that way — or at least [it is] a completely viable way to consume it because it has so much continuity, and so much connected narrative strands, and our fans picked on that.”The first two seasons found their way to Netflix, and thanks to the emergence of platforms like Tumblr and Twitter, fans never stopped talking about it or asking Bourassa and producers Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman — who also spoke with us — about a potential third season, Bourassa said.“Whenever we would go to do promotion or whenever active on social media promoting current projects, I would hear constantly from the fans about how much they loved Young Justice regardless of what I was talking about,” Bourassa said, crediting Weisman with “cultivating lot of their energy into a direct appeal … [so fans ] voices could be heard.”(Photo by DC Universe)That cultivation coincided with early planning for original content on the DC Universe streaming service, which created a perfect storm for Young Justice s resurrection. Weisman joked that there s not much difference between the two eras of the show, just that he is “older and wider.” Seriously, though, Vietti told Rotten Tomatoes that the creative team wanted to strike a balance between feeling both fresh and familiar.“We wanted to build something that was familiar to our fans in the first two seasons, but also pushed into new territory, he explained. While the arrival of Darkseid seemed imminent toward the end of the series second season, Outsiders picks up two years later and the villain is nowhere to be seen. Instead, the show picks up with the world facing a metahuman trafficking crisis: Young people with the potential for powers are being kidnapped and turned into weapons. The League even finds some of these press-ganged children on other planets, and it falls to Dick Grayson — who quit the team at the end of season 2 — to assemble a new covert group to investigate the metahuman smuggling syndicate.Members of the new team include Geo-Force and Halo, both characters with long histories in the comics — including the 1980s story Batman and the Outsiders, from which the new season takes some inspiration — but known in animation more as guest characters.“These [are] young characters that aren t really sure what they want to be when they grow up. They don t come from a sidekick type of relationship with an older hero; they re just normal people — ish,” Vietti explained.Geo-Force, for example, is a young Markovian prince thrust into the superhero world after the disappearance of his sister. Halo, meanwhile, is a refugee from the fictional DC Comics Middle Eastern country of Qurac, stuck in Markovia and trying her best to avoid detection as a metahuman in a country terrified of powers.bob体育在线登录Adjusted Score: 100600% Critics Consensus: Gunda takes an absorbingly meditative look at farm life from the animals' perspective, tacitly posing questions about our relationship to food along the way. 5.94.8 7月喜迎Given this weekend s overall box office bust, domestic audiences appear like they may be saving some of the money for the eventual spend in a couple weeks when Toy Story 4 opens. That film’s pre-sales are already expected to boost its opening weekend into the biggest animated opening of all-time. Because it sure did not happen this week.KING OF THE CROP: Pets Sequel Starts Soft (Photo by Universal Pictures)Just a few weeks ago tracking services had The Secret Life of Pets 2 at million. That was still low for an Illumination summer release, but notably much lower than the first film’s 4.3 million start in July 2016. As with Godzilla: King of the Monsters last week, that initial number proved to be way off: The film opened with just million. That is less than Despicable Me started with nearly a full decade ago (.3 million). Call this more a disappointment than any kind of outright disaster for the animation studio. They keep their productions relatively cheap ( million in this case.) Critics have been disappointed by six of their 10 features , including this one, which currently stands at 53% on the Tomatometer, with only Despicable Me getting above 80%. By comparison, Pixar has only had a single film receive a Rotten score (Cars 2 with 38%) and had 14 of their 20 films score over 90% on the Tomatometer. But Illumination’s films still make money. Seven of the studio’s films have made over a half-billion globally at the box office and two of them (Minions, Despicable Me 3) grossed over a billion. Illumination has not had a film gross less than 0 million domestically since 2012’s The Lorax, however.Only three animated films have ever opened to less than million and gone on to gross that much, and they were The Lion King, Shrek and, well, Illumination’s Sing. It grossed .5 million from Wednesday to Friday and .2 million over Friday to Monday during the 2016 holiday season and just grew and grew albeit with no direct animated competition until its eighth week when The Lego Batman Movie opened.Pets 2 is not going to have that luxury. As mentioned, Toy Story 4 is opening in just two weeks and the first-day pre-sales on May 28 outsold Incredibles 2. The first Pets movie opened three weeks after Finding Dory had already grossed 0 million. Toy Story 4 could gross half of that in its first three days, and Pets 2 could end up looking at a relatively soft domestic number even if its international numbers ( million to date) will no doubt turn it into another solid success for Illumination.Rotten Returns: Dark Phoenix Hits All New Lows for X-Men Franchise(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The X-Men films have not exactly been financial juggernauts. Logan and X-Men; Days of Future Past did very well as did both of the Deadpool films. X-Men: Apocalypse did cross the half-billion mark but barely squeaked out a profit for the studio. The rest of the films failed to cross that line and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: The Last Stand did not even get out of the red while still in theaters. Now, in what is hardly a surprise, Dark Phoenix is setting new lows all around in what appears to be one last gasp before the heroes are repackaged under Disney’s version of Marvel.Starting with the critical response, Dark Phoenix now replaces X-Men Origins: Wolverine (37%) as the worst-scored of the franchise with a 22%. Six of the 11 films (not counting Once Upon a Deadpool) have scored 80% or higher. The Wolverine used to be the low-water mark for the franchise opening with .1 million, but Dark Phoenix scraped up just million this weekend. It is also the only film in the series to have a per-theater-average less than ,000 with an estimated ,869. Phoenix may have started with a reasonable million in Thursday previews, but among films to open on Thursdays between million– million, only Blade Runner 2049 had a lower opening with .7 million. When the final numbers come out Monday, Dark Phoenix may own that distinction. Thanks to extensive reshoots the film’s budget ballooned to 0 million. Days of Future Past survived that number, when it became the highest-grossing non-Deadpool film in the group. Brett Ratner’s The Last Stand failed with a 0-million budget despite still being the highest-grossing domestic entry with X-Men in the title. The last five films (including Logan and the Deadpools) have grossed between 9 million–3 million overseas. Dark Phoenix has made 7 million internationally so far. Seventeen of the 37 films to open between million– million failed to reach 0 million, and Dark Phoenix is likely to be joining that list possibly with million less than what The Wolverine (2.5 million) finished with.Top Ten And Beyond: Aladdin, Godzilla, Rocketman, and Ma(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Warner Bros.’ Godzilla: King of the Monsters could just as easily have been placed in the Rotten Returns section. After the diminishing returns last weekend that ended up with just a .7 million weekend (a little more than half of 2014’s Godzilla million opening), the film dropped 67.5% in weekend two to .5 million. Let’s put that in perspective: First, a film with million or more after 10 days has never failed to reach 0 million, though there are a couple (Fifty Shades Freed, The Cat in the Hat) which came within a couple million of doing so. There is only one film that grossed over million in its opening weekend and then dropped under million the next: The Fault in Our Stars, which opened to million and fell to .7 million. That film still managed to gross 4.8 million, but Godzilla is already behind its pace by million and that is likely to fall off further. The film is up to 2 million globally and 5 million looks to be the magic number it needs to get into the black.Last week’s other releases did not drop quite as bad. Ma did fall 56.8%, which puts it just above Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare (.7 vs. .2 million after 10 days) and ahead in its second weekend gross by ,575 if the estimates hold. That film finished with just .4 million. Elton John musical biopic Rocketman fell 45.6% to million, which puts its final estimate somewhere between million– million domestic. It has grossed 1 million worldwide to date.Pokemon Detective Pikachu has passed 0 million globally, but still needs around another million in order to claim success. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, at half the cost, has made over 2 million worldwide and is in the win column for Lionsgate. The Keanu Reeves action spectacular is actually right in line with what the first Mission: Impossible had made after 24 days (8.7 million), and it is only .2 million behind what it made in weekend four (.6 million.) That is giving it a final estimate somewhere between 5 million–5 million domestically; enough to pass La La Land for the sixth highest-grossing domestic film in Lionsgate history.Amazon this weekend opened the first of their big Sundance acquisitions this weekend. Late Night (81%) opened in four theaters and grossed 9,654 for a ,414 per-theater-average. That is the best four-theater opening of 2019 so far, besting Sundance surprise screening Fighting With My Family, which made 8,780 before it went wide, as Late Night will be doing next week. That number is better than similar Amazon openings such as Beautiful Boy (8,888) and Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot (,339). In 2018, the top four theater openings were The Favourite (2,410), Free Solo (8,288), Eighth Grade (3,797), and Mid90s (8,157). Along with Eighth Grade, some other top Sundance PTAs over the years include The Kids Are All Right (,282) and The Big Sick (,315).Disney has the two biggest successes in the Top 10: Aladdin, which passed 0 million worldwide this weekend and now has a legitimate shot at reaching 0 million domestic, and Avengers: Endgame, which, at .730 billion, is roughly million away from passing Avatar and breaking the all-time record. Next week will be its eighth and likely final week in the Top 10. Avatar spent 14 weeks in the Top 10; seven of those in the No. 1 slot back in 2009.This Time Last Year: New Ocean Crew Stole Record Amount Opening WeekendSandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Co. took the top spot with Ocean’s 8 grossing .6 million, higher than any of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s films and ultimately outgrossing both of the sequels. Ari Aster’s Sundance horror sensation, Hereditary, opened in fourth with .5 million behind Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2. Global Road (formerly Open Road’s) Hotel Artemis proved to be a bust with just .2 million, while Avengers: Infinity War passed the 0 million line. The Top 10 films grossed 9.66 million and averaged 70.2% on the Tomatometer. A new cast, led by MCU buddies Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth and guided by F. Gary Gray, suit up to fight new aliens. There is also a sequel to the 2000 remake of the 1971 original Shaft with Samuel L. Jackson. It is also called Shaft. Son of Shaft may be more appropriate or maybe Shaft: First Blood Part II. But Jackson returns with director Tim Story taking over for the late John Singleton. Finally, Jim Jarmusch takes on the zombie genre with an all-star cast, including Bill Murray and Adam Driver, in The Dead Don’t Die. The film from the indie darling was met with some indifference from Cannes this year and currently sits at 50% on the Tomatometer. The Full Top 10: June 7-9The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .11 million (.03 million total)Dark Phoenix (2019) 22% – million (.00 million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .50 million (2.38 million total)Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) 42% – .54 million (.59 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – million (.49 million total)Ma (2019) 56% – .82 million (.76 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .40 million (8.66 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .80 million (4.36 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – .98 million (7.40 million total)Booksmart (2019) 96% – .57 million (.81 million total)

1. ALFRED MOLINA TO RETURN AS DOC OCK IN NEXT TOM HOLLAND SPIDER-MAN MOVIE(Photo by (c) Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)Well before Disney made their dozens of announcements yesterday about almost every other Marvel movie, the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland (we ll just call it Spider-Man 3 for now) repeatedly popped up in social networking news. Having said that, it might be important to look at the various stories with caution, as not all of them have been confirmed. Let s start with the most official announcement, which is that Alfred Molina will be reprising his role as Spider-Man 2 (Certified Fresh at 93%) villain Doctor Octopus. Setting aside his apparent death in that film (sorry for the spoiler, but you only had sixteen years to see the movie), Molina s character also comes from what we could consider a separate movie reality (in which Tobey Maguire plays Spider-Man) than that of Tom Holland s Peter Parker, in the same way that Jamie Foxx s Electro was in a movie starring Andrew Garfield s Peter Parker (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Many writers are interpreting these particular announcements as possible confirmations that the next Spider-Man could be a live-action take on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%), including stories like this one that state that Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst, and Emma Stone are returning as well. In truth, none of those actors has been officially announced yet, though it is worth mentioning that Emma Stone recently dropped out of Damien Chazelle s Babylon due to scheduling conflicts; we just don t know what those conflicts were. Elsewhere, it was also rumored that Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil in the popular Netflix series, might also appear in the film, but again, it s still just a rumor until it s confirmed. Sony Pictures has scheduled the next Spider-Man for December 17, 2021; you can read our own in-depth breakdown here.2. PLASTIC MAN GETTING  FEMALE-CENTRIC  REVAMP (PLASTIC WOMAN?) (Photo by DC Comics)The idea of the original super-stretchy superhero Plastic Man (who predates, say, DC Comics own Elongated Man, Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, Elastigirl of The Incredibles, and Ms. Marvel) getting his own movie has been bouncing around since the 1990s when the Wachowski siblings wrote a Plastic Man screenplay as a potential project to take up after The Matrix. Warner Bros. has once again revived the Plastic Man project, but this time, it s being described as female-centric, although it s unclear what exactly that means (for example, will Plastic Man now be a woman, or will there be another lead character who s a woman?). The new creative lead on Plastic Man (Plastic Woman, maybe?) will be relatively new screenwriter Cat Vasko, who has worked on several not-yet-produced projects, including Fierce Kingdom, Margot Robbie s Queen of the Air, and an adaptation of the award-winning comic book series Lumberjanes.3. DIRECTOR STEVEN SODERBERGH IS MAKING A SEX, LIES VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Outlaw Productions)It s difficult to imagine now, with all that has happened and changed in the last few decades, but there was a time (1989, to be precise), when the Sundance Film Festival was a relatively sleepy little film festival up in the mountains that wasn t besieged every year by the film industry and aspiring filmmakers. The movie that arguably started the indie revolution of the 1990s was Steven Soderbergh s debut feature film, sex, lies videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%), starring James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo. Over 30 years later, Soderbergh revealed this week that he is now working on a sequel to that film with its two female leads, Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo, both agreeing to reprise their roles as sisters. Soderbergh didn t reveal anything else about the sequel, except that one of the sisters now has an adult daughter who is about the same age as the characters were in the original 1989 film.4. DREAMWORKS TO ADAPT POPULAR DOG MAN GRAPHIC NOVELS (Photo by Scholastic)Although Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 87%) may have been unfortunately titled (since it has yet to be followed by a second epic movie), the film also has a Fresh Audience Score of 61%. (Instead of a sequel movie, the story continues on Netflix as The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which is now in in its fourth season.) The good news for Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey this week is that another of his popular children s graphic novels is now being developed as an animated feature film as well. DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have acquired the rights to Pilkey s graphic novels series Dog Man for a feature film that will be directed by Peter Hastings, who has previously worked on the popular animated TV series Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. As the title suggests, Dog Man is a canine superhero who fights crime alongside his kitten sidekick Li l Petey. The various Dog Man graphic novels have sold nearly 40 million copies in print to date and have been translated into 40 different languages.5. JENNIFER HUDSON TO STAR IN HER OWN CHRISTMAS MUSICAL (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)If the COVID-19 pandemic had never happened, the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson, would have come out this past August, instead of its new release date of August 13, 2021. While we all wait for that movie to come out, it sounds like Jennifer Hudson might already be preparing her next movie musical, as she is now producing and expected to star in a new project for New Line Cinema. The untitled musical comedy will revolve around Christmas songs both classic and new ones written for the movie  in a story about a down-and-out singer’s life being turned upside down when she is mistaken for writing the next Christmas hit. The untitled Christmas comedy is currently being written by TV writer Ira Madison III (Daybreak, Nikki Fre$h).6. CHRIS PRATT TO EARN THE BLACK BELT IN MARTIAL ARTS COMEDY (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This was obviously a big week for all things Marvel, but one of their stars lined up a project this week completely separate from all things superhero-related. Chris Pratt will star in the independent coming-of-age martial arts comedy The Black Belt, which he will also produce. The premise, written by TV writer Randall Green (Billions, The Perfect Date), revolves around a shy teenage boy who s trying to learn karate, with Chris Pratt attached to play the uncle who serves as a mentor in the boy s quest. Chris Pratt s Indivisible Productions will partner with a relatively new company called Monarch Media, which recently wrapped production on its first feature film, A Week Away. Other projects on Chris Pratt s schedule include the science fiction action movie The Tomorrow War (7/23/2021), the recently wrapped sequel Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022), a supporting role as Star-Lord in Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), and, as of yesterday, a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+ in late 2022, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sometime in 2023.7. KINGSMAN PRODUCER REVEALS PLANS FOR SEVEN MORE SUPER SPY MOVIES (Photo by Giles Keyte/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)It was just eight years ago when comic book writer Mark Millar first published his indie series Kingsman: The Secret Service, but since then, those comics have given us Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 74%), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and coming soon, the prequel The King s Man (3/12/2021). Talking about his company s ambitious expansion plans, Marv Group CEO Zygi Kamasa revealed this week that producer and director Matthew Vaughn has plans for something like seven more Kingsman films, as well as a Kingsman TV series, and two or three other franchies. It s unclear what those seven additional Kingsman movies might be, but it could be that the prequel The King s Man, starring Gemma Arterton and Ralph Fiennes, could serve as a launching point for additional prequels, in addition to further Kingsman movies starring Taron Egerton. Kingsman could also inspire spin-off movies, and Mark Millar s comics are part of a Millarworld shared universe that also includes Kick-Ass (Certified Fresh at 76%), which, incidentally, Vaughn also directed.8. JURASSIC PARK SCREENWRITER GOING OLD SCHOOL WITH THE GREEN HORNET AND KATO (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Although we regularly hear about new movies based on comic books and video games, it s been quite a while since this writer remembers writing about a new project based upon a radio serial from the 1930s. That, however, is exactly what Universal Pictures is now developing as The Green Hornet and Kato (titled thus to put emphasis on the martial arts expert sidekick), which has its roots both as a radio serial and as a short-lived-but-well-remembered 1960s TV series starring Bruce Lee as Kato. Universal s new project should not be confused with Sony s 2011 comedy The Green Hornet (Rotten at 44%), directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, which was considered a box office bomb and failed to launch a franchise. To get The Green Hornet and Kato revved up, Universal Pictures has enlisted one of their heavy hitter screenwriters, David Koepp, whose impressive filmography includes the first Jurassic Park, the first Spider-Man, David Fincher s Panic Room, and Tom Cruise s War of the Worlds (he s also also currently working on Harrison Ford s Indiana Jones 5 (July, 2022) and a remake of Bride of Frankenstein). Universal won the rights to The Green Hornet following a bidding war in January.9. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN (AND OTHERS) RESPOND TO WB S HBO MAX ANNOUNCEMENT(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)Last week, Warner Bros. made the monumental announcement that their entire 2021 theatrical slate will also premiere day-and-date on the studio s HBO Max streaming service. That slate of 16-17 movies actually does not include Tenet (Fresh at 71%), since that movie already came out this past summer, but that hasn t deterred the film s director, Christopher Nolan, from speaking out against the move. Nolan described the HBO Max move as a bait and switch  against filmmakers who thought they were making big screen experiences for what Nolan called the worst streaming service. Other directors who voiced dissatisfaction with the deal included Patty Jenkins, Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Judd Apatow, and the Directors Guild of America. Of the directors whose films are included in the 2021 move, the most vocal has probably been Denis Villeneuve, who was quoted as saying that Warner Bros might just have killed the Dune franchise. As for Christopher Nolan, there is now concern and speculation that Warner Bros. might lose the acclaimed director who gave them such films as Inception and the three Batman movies starring Christian Bale. All that being said, there are also people who back Warner Bros, especially considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is limiting theater attendance anyway, with director Steven Soderbergh being among them. (Never mind the fact that Soderbergh signed a three-year deal with HBO back in January.)On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Toy Story 4 is nothing if not sincere. During a one-and-a-half-day visit to the Pixar campus in Emeryville – part of the California East Bay golden triangle of art-driven cities including Oakland and Berkeley – over a dozen supervisors, writers, and digital artisans hosted workshops and seminars about their upcoming June movie to answer the question that s on all our minds: Why? Why make another Toy Story? Especially when Toy Story 3 felt like the end; Andy passing his toys on to the next generation as he moves to college, the camera panning up to the sky, a bookend with the same clouds that opened the Toy Story back in 1995. Toy Story 3 delivered a mint-in-box rarity in today s world of tempting serialized storytelling and cinematic universes: A sense of finality, and closure. Why mess with that?Minor spoiler warning: This article describes the opening scene of Toy Story 4!It started in 2014.We re sitting in a board room with Pixar character modelers, directing animators, and story supervisors and artists. Like the rest of the world, they tell us, Pixar had moved on from Toy Story, not expecting to see the franchise s characters on the screen again, outside of shorts and television specials. Monsters University had just released. They were gearing up for the one-two punch of Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Amidst the streamlined chaos, an impossible idea persisted: That there was still more Toy Story to tell, and it deserved to be on the biggest screens possible across the world. The idea turned to talk, turned to pencil against paper, turned to cursors across monitors, turned into crews and planning and development, until Toy Story 4 moved into The Steve Jobs Building, the campus section where movies are officially in production.BO PEEP FINALLY GETS HER DUEPixar story supervisor Valerie LaPointe tells the room that there are people at Pixar who, as children, had their world expanded watching Toy Story in theaters in 1995, who now get to work on the fourth, and understand the legacy they re molding on their computers every day. To LaPointe s left are five women, who minutes before had each spoken about their role on TS4, nodding in agreement. They are a crucial creative force at Pixar, and instrumental in forging the emotional ace of the new movie: Bo Peep. The porcelain lamp with her flock of sheep (voiced, as always, by Annie Potts) had a minor but memorable role in the original Toy Story as Woody s flame, with less to do in Toy Story 2. And while the main characters got their glorious (seeming) sendoff in Toy Story 3, Bo wasn t there at all, having been reduced to a sacrificial plot point to motivate and illuminate her boyfriend s emotional pain. Clearly, there was more story to tell, because her story hadn t been told at all.Toy Story 4 opens with a flashback. It s nighttime at Andy s house, in the middle of a downpour, set a bit before Toy Story 3. R/C is outside caught in a gutter torrent, spinning his wheels to keep from getting sucked into a sewer drain. Bo and Woody, always the contingency planners, execute a rescue mission that saves R/C and leaves Woody momentarily underneath a car in the driveway. Everything looks photo-decadent: the rain, the lighting, the subtle scuff on Buzz s plastic armor plating. Pixar has found new vistas to paint once again. Then, the bombshell: Molly, Andy s sister, is growing up and Bo s watch has ended – she s being carried in a box to the car, and soon to be off into the great donated unknown. Bo has accepted her fate, having long since known a porcelain lamp doesn t have quite the shelf life of a talking cowboy or space commando. Woody is frantic, and he attempts to get her out of the box. Bo does the opposite, offering a place beside her. Just as Bo knows her destination, Woody knows his is entwined with Andy, and as the car peels off, he s left in the driveway splintered by the rain. It s not quite Up territory in terms of Pixar opening-scene tearjerkers, but considering we ve known these characters for nearly 25 years, it s damn close.EYES PEELED FOR PLENTY OF PIXAR EASTER EGGSFor eagle-eyed viewers, something may catch your attention: The car s license plate – always cinematic fertile ground for easter eggs, especially in Pixar films. RMR F97, the plates read. But what does it mean? It is an easter egg! director Josh Cooley laughed during our press conference. On Toy Story 2, there was someone who worked on the show that accidentally deleted the movie from the render farm, producer Mark Nielsen said, who worked modeling and shading on Toy Story 2.  That was the command on the computer that deleted the film. Galyn Susman, who was an early producer on this film, was on maternity leave and had a backup of the movie at her house, and brought it back to Pixar and restored it, added producer Jonas Rivera. It felt appropriate that the license plate on the car that takes Bo away would be the same that killed Toy Story 2. From the filmmakers words and the footage and material shown, it becomes apparent Toy Story 4 will probably become the most easter egg-laden movie the studio has ever produced. At one point, Woody and Forky – a spork with googly eyes and pipe-cleaner arms come to life, who exists as his own existential quandary – end up in an antique store. Full of neat knick-knacks and weathered baubles, it s a set piece that puts Pixar s detailed creativity on full display, not to mention plenty of references to their past.Look for a sign that says Papa Rivera s, a reference to the aforementioned producer. The Eggman Movers truck, around since the first Toy Story, makes a comeback, long known to be tied to art director Ralph Eggleston. From Finding Nemo, you can see the tiki heads from the fish tank on some shelves. There s steel decoration for Catmull s Brews, named after Ed Catmull, who s been with the company since the beginning and is retiring the month after Toy Story 4 is released. The Catmull sign hangs over a pinball machine whose interior has been turned into a miniature nightclub; Tinny, from the 1988 short Tin Toy, is the bouncer. (And for you pinheads out there, the machine was modeled after Bally s 1977 Black Jack – and we saw that tucked away in a room at Pixar HQ when we were doing a workshop making our own Forkys.)A FEMALE VILLAIN, FULL-ON BODY HORROR, AND BOO?Elsewhere in the antique store, Woody and Forky meet Gabby-Gabby, an angelic 50s doll and the first female antagonist of the series. Gabby Gabby commands a league of dapper and wholly unsettling ventriloquist dummies who do her bidding, like trying to rip out Woody s voice box to replace her own broken one. To set the body horror mood, Gabby Gabby puts on a record playing music from Coco, the vinyl pressed on the prestigious Chalupa Records. And that s not the only Coco reference. Part of the road trip includes visiting a carnival fair across the street from the antique store, which is where Woody reunites with Bo, who has been leading a joyous, independent, if not occasionally challenging life as a lost toy. One of the carnival game prizes is the guitar from Coco. And who s joined in among the festivities? A teenage Boo from Monsters, Inc, who appears to have not changed her style since 2001. Hey, purple shirts and scrunchies are eternal! And all those easter eggs were from less than 30 minutes of footage. As Toy Story 4 has been in the works for the last five years, the studio has seen some major changes. Ed Catmull is retiring. Beloved animator Bud Luckey passed away (he was all over the classic Boundin short). And founder John Lasseter left in scandal. It’s been a different time from their heyday, when Pixar racked up 11 Certified Fresh movies between Toy Story and 3; then a record, now overtaken by Marvel Studios current 14. During the visit, it s clear here was a movie being made by people both filmmaker and fan, who see this as a continuation of the golden age. Maybe they re always like this with their movies. For anyone born after 2010, this is the first chance to watch a new Toy Story on the big screen. It could even be their first movie theater experience ever. That s quite the gift. It s the same one Pixar offered in 1995, and many people who took it back then, grew up, got a job there, made Toy Story 4, talked to a bunch of press, and now get to offer it up to a new generation. Returning to the toy cowboy who s devoted to the joy of others, Pixar has become the studio it always was: A house of toil and dream, where old things find new life.Like this?
King of the Crop: Fantastic Beasts Wins Weekend But Signals Trouble Ahead(Photo by Warner Bros)Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald topped the box office this weekend easily, but that s about the only domestic victory the film can claim. It can’t even boast having the best start of the 2018 holiday season so far, falling behind The Grinch’s .5 million last week. By the time the final estimates come out it may not even be a Top 25 November opening. (However, it’s international numbers are more than solid with a worldwide tally of 3 million just this weekend.)The million opening is the lowest in the entire Harry Potter franchise. The previous low: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them with .4 million. Before that it was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, though that posted the second-highest multiple of the series with a 3.78x.Fantastic Beasts is scheduled to be a five-part series, and critics are bailing on just the second movie. Will audiences? Anything less than 4 million domestic (likely) equals declining territory. And less than 0 million domestic will be a major disappointment for WB. So is it the international haul that truly matters? Like the Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, American audiences may have grown weary, but as long coffers fill overseas, we will see more of them yet.Rotten Returns: Instant Family Continues Streak of Mark Wahlbombs(Photo by Paramount)Paramount got strong reviews from critics for Mark Wahlberg-starring Instant Family, but the million production from Sean Anders did not have that sweet Daddy’s Home connection with Will Ferrell. Confident that audiences would be looking for a potential feel-good film for the holidays, the studio moved the film up from February into this weekend and was rewarded with just .5 million. Since 1990 there have been a dozen films that have started between .7-.7 million, and only three of them have reached million: The Jackal (1997), Horrible Bosses 2, and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, which benefited from an awards run. If word-of-mouth cannot build Instant Family this will go down as the seventh straight film that Mark Wahlberg has headlined that has ended up on the losing side of its budget. Steve McQueen’s Widows seemingly is in the same boat as Instant Family with just a .3 million opening and million budget. But as a potential awards player, there is a room for longevity.Top Ten and Beyond: Grinch Eyes Seasonal High, No Box Office Rhapsody For Adult Fare(Photo by © 20th Century Fox)Illumination’s animated adaptation of The Grinch finds itself in a pretty good position, pulling ahead of The Lorax (also from Illumination) with a 10-day gross of 6.5 million. That puts The Grinch at a total end estimate in the 0-0 million range. Meanwhile, another box office song going on: Bohemian Rhapsody, which looks to end in 0 million range. It is over 4 million worldwide to date, making the film a tremendous success for Fox.Non-Grinch, not-Queen movies have less to sing about. With respective budgets of and million, Overlord and The Girl In the Spider s Web are at a mere .7 and .2 million. The new Dragon Tattoo Story is only at million worldwide. Overlord is not much better at million, but it is safe to say we have have seen the last of Lisbeth Salander on the big screen. Disney and theaters are bailing fast on another overpriced failure: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ( million domestic, 6 million worldwide against a0 million budget), which vanished from over 1,100 theaters in just its third weekend.Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate had the best per-theater-average of the weekend, with ,000 in four theaters, though it is not much of a number to crow about. Another awards hopeful, Green Book, played 25 theaters, driving up 2k before it will expand into over 1,000 on Wednesday. For the MST3kers out there, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie opened in 26 theaters to 6k. (Enjoy the new season on Netflix this Wednesday!)
Gillen: Oh, I ve got the hat! What is it? A fedora? A kind of a fedora? Whatever, I ve got that. It came with a blue feather that we couldn t use because it looked a bit too much to wear, as far as costuming goes. One thing I did go for to make Hynek stand out, to show a little bit of difference, I wore a turquoise ring. You know, the real Hynek did wear a turquoise ring for a period of time and his one was even bigger than the one I got. I tried that with the exact size and made me look like Liberace. I felt like that little blue ring was enough of a flourish to show that this guy s got something more to him than just like an office drone. So when we put the blue feather in the hat, it looked like too much. This hat came straight from the hatmaker with a blue feather. And when I took the hat home with me, at the end, I put the blue feather back in, and I wore it on the plane. I m wearing it quite a lot, actually. But you don t want to walk around in your costume all the time. It s kind of bad form. Can you tease some of the cases you guys cover in season 2?Gillen: I think aside from Roswell and Area 51, there are a few others that may be a little familiar. There s the Maury Island case, and there are the Men in Black, which were real. I don t think it s like we can only continue with this. If we give people cases that they re familiar with, it s just the way it fell this year. But you know, honestly, there s like 400 or 500 really good stories there to exploit, if we wanted.

Ghcxuf So, what exactly has changed? Let’s dive in. Traditionally, Top Critic status was mostly awarded to ‘top’ publications rather than individuals, so that the Tomatometer-approved critics working for Top Critic publications were given the label on our site when their reviews were published. We’ve removed that requirement so that individuals who write for multiple publications or for themselves, and aren’t necessarily working for one masthead full-time, can be Top Critics. At a time when being “on staff” is rarer and rarer for journalists, this change makes the Top Critics pool more representative of the active critics’ community at large. The criteria are still rigorous – these are the top critics, after all. We’re looking for the highest quality work, the deepest commitment to criticism, and significant reach. To that end, we’ve introduced new metrics that potential individual and publication Top Critics must hit, including how long they’ve been publishing reviews for, how frequently they do so, and audience size benchmarks. (For critics and publications serving underrepresented groups, the metric minimums are looked at on a case-by-case basis.). If you’d like to check out the new criteria, you can do so HERE.Also new is our Top Critics Advisory Committee, which works closely with the Rotten Tomatoes team to evaluate candidates. The Board, made up of several critics and industry professionals of diverse backgrounds and prominence, will meet regularly to consider potential Top Critics, which will be designated on a rolling basis.(Photo by © Rotten Tomatoes)How do the new criteria impact the makeup of our Top Critics? With the launch of the revamp, we’re adding 170 new individually approved Top Critics. (And note: previously approved Top Critic publications and individuals aren’t losing their designation; we’re looking to add more voices, not remove them.) Among the new Top Critics, 60 percent are women, an estimated 25 percent are people of color, and 24 percent publish via video and podcasts. At Rotten Tomatoes, we are committed to building an inclusive critics community that reflects not just the current media landscape, but the global entertainment audience. Modernizing our Top Critics selection process is a big part of that and continues the work we did in revamping our overall critics’ criteria in 2018, which introduced more fresh voices and platforms into the pool of opinion that makes up our Tomatometer scores. You can read about those changes HERE.Now, a richer and more diverse set of reviewers will be showcased as Top Critics, spotlighted at the top of our movie and TV pages and playing their part in Certified Fresh designations. If you see that little red star next to one of their names, go on and check out their work – we think you’ll like it. 😈😈

bob体育在线登录 As television milestones go, it’s tough to top being on the air not just for a period of years but a period of decades. On December 17, Matt Groening’s deathless satirical masterpiece will achieve the remarkable feat of being on the air for three decades. Three decades! Thirty years! That’s real good. The Simpsons has helped define the comic sensibility of multiple generations of irreverent, pop-culture savvy smart-asses. Its run was first ground-breaking in its eviscerating and dark yet emotionally grounded look at the greed and cynicism at the heart of American society, and then record-breaking in the show’s unprecedented commercial success and staggering longevity. These 30 essential episodes of the preeminent American pop-culture institution illustrate the comedic perfection of the show during its glorious, radiant prime, and then the long, slow, inevitable slide in quality and relevance that followed. But it s worth noting that while we may not be in the Golden Age, the series still does hit hard – and funny – on occasion, so you will find some more recent eps in this list.Let us know your favorite Simpsons episodes in the comments.1. Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire in The Simpsons: Season 1 (1989) 100%You never forget your first time! Accordingly, The Simpsons opened on a painfully relatable note of paralyzing Yuletide economic uncertainty with a special Christmas episode that finds Homer desperate to provide a merry Christmas for his family after being denied a holiday bonus. “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” goes to audaciously dark places for the introductory episode of a cartoon pitched at families. It climaxes with Homer going with his son and alcoholic friend Barney to the racetrack, where he gambles away his money, yet still manages to deliver the requisite happy, or at least bittersweet, ending. From the very beginning, The Simpsons wasn’t just very funny. It was also emotionally real and grounded.2. Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish in The Simpsons: Season 2 (1990) 100%Classic episodes like “Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish” helped establish sinister arch-capitalist and power plant owner Montgomery Burns as a standout supporting player of tremendous depth and surprising complexity. He’s a figure of biblical, almost Satanic evil but also an oddly sympathetic figure when his God-like status is threatened. Burns is poignantly, unexpectedly human here after the discovery of a three-eyed mutated fish causes a government crackdown on the power plant and inspires the evil mogul to run for governor to protect his interests.3. Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington in The Simpsons: Season 3 (1991) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)“Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington” adroitly typecasts Lisa as its pure-hearted Mr. Smith surrogate in a savagely satirical evisceration of political corruption, patriotic hokum, and the terminally mild song stylings of Mark Russell. As the show’s unyielding paragon of integrity, Lisa is a natural choice to earnestly inhabit the well-worn archetype of the idealistic innocent who uncovers the seedy underbelly of American politics. Lisa is an inherently political little muckraker and “Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington” ranks amongst her finest half hours.4. Homer at the Bat in The Simpsons: Season 3 (1991) 100%If you were a sports fan at the time, “Homer at the Bat” was no mere television episode: It was a seismic cultural event that brought together the best in entertainment and sports in a riotous riff on The Natural. In “Homer at the Bat,” a magic bat transforms Homer into a dinger-smacking dynamo before Mr. Burns hires a team of major league ringers to help him win a million-dollar bet on a company softball game with a fellow mogul. You don’t need to be a baseball fan to find “Homer at the Bat” hilarious, but it does help.5. A Streetcar Named Marge in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%The perpetually long-suffering Marge gets an opportunity to not only express but sing her pain when she’s cast as Blanche Du Bois opposite a disconcertingly shredded Ned Flanders in a musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire that replaces the tragic melodrama of the original with something peppier and more upbeat. Marge’s onstage drama mirrors her offstage frustrations, which lends the episode surprising emotional weight.6. Marge vs. The Monorail in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Before he rose to talk show fame, Conan O’Brien wrote his way into The Simpsons history with “Marge Vs. The Monorail.” It’s an instant classic parody of The Music Man with Phil Hartman perfectly cast as its Harold Hill figure, a charismatic flim-flam man with a song on his lips and a scam in his heart who bamboozles the gullible people of Springfield into buying a monorail that causes the problems he promises it will solve.7. I Love Lisa in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%It’s impossible not to feel poor Ralph Wiggum’s precocious romantic heartbreak when Lisa Simpson humiliates him after he publicly professes his love for her in this painfully hilarious and just plain painful exploration of puppy love gone awry. Watch closely and you can pinpoint the exact moment “I Love Lisa” rips the audience’s heart in half. Who knew Lisa could be such a heartbreaker and Ralph such a convincing tragic romantic hero?8. Last Exit to Springfield in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%To fans of classic The Simpsons, the words “Lisa needs braces” must always be answered with “Dental plan?” and vice versa thanks to “Last Exit to Springfield. The episode pitted a deeply overmatched Homer against Mr. Burns in a labor-versus-owner skirmish that develops unexpectedly high, personal stakes that sees Homer’s dim-wittedness facing off against his family and co-workers’ needs.9. Krusty Gets Kancelled in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%The stars REALLY come for poor Krusty after his place in children’s hearts is taken by sadistic dummy Gabbo. “Krusty Gets Kancelled” would make it into the pantheon of all-time great episodes on the basis of a guest voice roster that includes Johnny Carson, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers alone, but it offers an embarrassment of riches even without a ridiculously stacked guest lineup.10. Cape Feare in The Simpsons: Season 5 (1993) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Kelsey Grammer’s sonorously duplicitous sidekick-turned-serial attempted murderer, Sideshow Bob, proved himself a worthy antagonist to Bart Simpson by slipping into the role of a vengeance-crazed ex-con in a Cape Fear spoof that contains the legendary sequence where the frustrated clown steps on a rake nine times – a gag that’s funny, then unfunny, then brutal, then hilarious all over again.11. Rosebud in The Simpsons: Season 5 (1993) 100%The Simpsons’ famous love for Citizen Kane, and pop culture pastiche in general. reaches a glorious crescendo with “Rosebud, which re-imagines Charles Foster Kane’s iconic nostalgia for the sled of his youth as miserly Mr. Burns similarly pining for a clumsily symbolic totem of childhood innocence, a ratty teddy bear that Maggie comes to own. “Rosebud” humanized a monster by exposing the child within.12. Itchy and Scratchy Land in The Simpsons: Season 6 (1994) 100%When FOX tried to appease censors by eliminating Itchy Scratchy, a duo that exists for the sake of gratuitous violence, The Simpsons impishly protested with the most uncompromisingly brutal Itchy Scratchy episode of all time. “Itchy and Scratchy Land” ratcheted the bloodshed up to hyperbolic and hilarious levels in a gut-buster that riffs merrily on Disney Land, Westworld, and Jurassic Park.13. Treehouse of Horror V in The Simpsons: Season 6 (1994) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The Treehouse of Horror, The Simpsons’ beloved annual Halloween ramble through treasured terror tales past, was never darker or more hilarious than in this fifth entry that focused on adults murderously terrorizing children. First Homer convincingly inhabits the murderous mind of Jack Torrance in a non legally-actionable parody of The Shining called “The Shinning.” Then Homer ruins things for civilization by futzing around with the timeline before a final segment finds teachers and lunch ladies enjoying a new “miracle meat” made of students that gives a deliciously literal meaning to “Eat my shorts.”14. Who Shot Mr Burns? Parts 1 and 2 in The Simpsons: Season 6 (1994) 100% and The Simpsons: Season 7 (1995) 100%The Simpsons delved into the pulse-pounding world of cliffhangers with “Who Shot Mr. Burns?”, a high-profile, much buzzed-about two-part parody of Dallas’ 1980 ratings bonanza “Who Shot J.R?”. Like the earlier pop-culture phenomenon, “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” focused on the shooting of a mogul so cartoonishly evil that just about anyone with a pulse who has interacted with them has reason to wish them dead.
