Iron Man’s crimsons and golds or the Guardians of the Galaxy’s blues, greens, and purples blur and swirl across the nearly every frame, giving audiences a sensory overload as they watch their heroes battle for good over evil.So how did the MCU start the television section of its Phase Four chapter? With a black-and-white sitcom, naturally.WandaVision, created by Jac Schaeffer, is ostensibly about the quiet, domestic bliss of tel

With Jason Momoa reprising his role as the Atlantean superhero, James Wan’s partly underwater adventure is a blast, according to the first wave of critical reactions flooding social media. It’s apparently nuts in a good way, with spectacular visuals, and you’re going to want to see it in theaters. Here’s what the critics are saying:So Aquaman is good?Aquaman is a buckwild movie… it’s completely unafraid to just go for it. Meg Downey, CBRIt’s unabashedly melodramatic and over the top with the largest, most ambitious sense of scale imaginable. Germain Lussier, io9Wait, those are good things? It’s so inherently bonkers that you’d have to be an utter killjoy to not get caught up in it.  Jim Vejvoda, IGN MoviesJames Wan has made an unapologetically bold superhero flick, mixing adventure and fantasy elements with stunning visual effects.  Carly Lane, SyFy WireIt’s a good adventure movie that acknowledges exactly what it is from the start, which is a meal made almost entirely of ham.  Spencer Perry, ComingSoon.net(Photo by Warner Bros.)So it s fun, then?Goofy in spots, but it s rollicking fun. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendIt’s at its best when it’s having fun and not taking itself too seriously. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmAmbitious, campy and so much fun. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentHow does it look?Aquaman is breathtakingly beautiful.  Andrew Dyce, ScreenRantJames Wan and company put a lot of care into designing this corner of the DCEU. Atlantis looks gorgeous. Mike Cecchini, Den of GeekIt is a relentless visual spectacle that knows what it is and doesn’t hold back. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentWhere does it rank among DC movies?Aquaman is the best DC movie since The Dark Knight. Tom Jorgensen, IGN Movies2nd best DCU movie. YEEEAAHH! Germain Lussier, io9It’s definitely one of the best DC Universe movies thus far. Dorian Parks, Geeks of Color(Photo by Warner Bros.)What does this film do for the DCEU?It s another step in the right direction for the DCEU and shows how different/distinct the tones of these movies can be while still existing together. Mike Cecchini, Den of GeekA great step for the DCEU. Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlendWB should be handing the DCEU reins to James Wan, he s proven he can, ahem, right the ship. Tom Jorgensen, IGN MoviesHow is Jason Momoa? It [has] a great hero arc/performance from Jason Momoa. Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlend[Has] a terrific lead in Jason Momoa (who s clearly having the time of his life).  Carly Lane, SyFy WireAnd his chemistry with Amber Heard?Jason Momoa and Amber Heard are fantastic together, both bringing a ton of humor.  Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumAmber Heard and Jason Momoa are great together. They bounce off each other with such ease. Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment(Photo by Warner Bros.)Does it have a villain problem?Black Manta is great villain that comic book fans will love. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmBlack Manta was a dope villain and his suit looked incredible. I just wish he got a bit more love. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorDescribe the movie in a nutshell.Feels like a Marvel phase one movie, in a good way. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmImagine 80s Schwarzenegger starring in Hideo Kojima’s Avatar and you re most of the way there. Andrew Dyce, ScreenRantAquaman is like an 80s cartoon, with all of the fun and the problems that come with that. Spencer Perry, ComingSoon.netDid it surprise you?Aquaman is better than expected. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmAgainst all odds, I really dug Aquaman, which offers thrills chills and a whole lotta adventure for the whole family!” . Scott Wampler, Birth.Movies.Death.It was exactly what I was hoping for and I can t wait to see it again! Jenna Busch, Legion of Leia(Photo by Warner Bros.)Does it get better as it goes?Second half s one cheer/laugh after another. Andrew Dyce, ScreenRantThird act battle that doesn’t devolve into the typical comic book movie blah trap, and is surprisingly ambitious. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmAre there no complaints?Parts of it are kind of bad but they are not the majority and, oddly, still fit in with the cartoony tone. Germain Lussier, io9A lot of the aspects I didn’t like can probably be traced back to decisions Snyder made that were inherited by Wan. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmIt s flawed, but fun. Mike Rougeau, GameSpotSeriously, though, it s good? It’s one terrific adventure. Jimmy O, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumAn absolute blast. Jenna Busch, Legion of LeiaAquaman opens everywhere on December 21.

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Downton Abbey 2, Furiosa, Haunted Mansion, and Muppet Man.This WEEK S TOP STORYMAD MAX: FURY ROAD SPIN-OFF FURIOSA WILL BE BIGGEST AUSTRALIAN MOVIE EVER (Photo by Jasin Boland/Warner Bros)Director George Miller and various Australian government agencies came together this week for an official statement announcing that the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off Furiosa (featuring Anya Taylor-Joy as the younger version of Charlize Theron s character) will be the biggest film shoot ever in Australian history. Filming of Furiosa is scheduled to start in New South Wales in June, 2021, aiming for a release date of June 23, 2023, and is made possible by financial incentives on both the federal and state government levels. Taylor-Joy will also be joined in Furiosa by Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The production of Furiosa is expected to bring in over 850 local jobs and increase the local economy by over A0 million (around 5 million U.S. dollars). As one can guess by the hiring of the much younger Anya Taylor-Joy to replace Charlize Theron, the film is expected to be a prequel depicting the earlier life of the woman who became known as Furiosa, though we don t know any details of what that might be (other than what we learned in Mad Max: Fury Road).Other Top Headlines1. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2 DIRECTING TEAM ANNOUNCED (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures)The Miles Morales animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%) was both a critical hit and the winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2018. That film was directed by the team of Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsay, and Rodney Rothman, but for the sequel, Sony Pictures has hired another trio of directors. The directors of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel will be Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Lost Airbender), Kemp Powers (co-director of Soul, writer of One Night in Miami), and Justin K. Thompson (an animator on shows like Star Wars: Clone Wars and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command). Dos Santos had previously been announced as the sole director of the the sequel, but both Powers and Thompson have been working with Dos Santos on the sequel since the project started. Although Sony Pictures has not yet announced the sequel s cast or premise, the film is scheduled for less than 18 months from now, on October 7, 2022.2. RUSSELL CROWE REVEALS GAMECHANGING ROLE IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (Photo by © Universal Pictures)Marvel Studios does a pretty great job of keeping most of their secrets (who knew until last week that they had cast Julia-Louis Dreyfus in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?). Having said that, the COVID-19 pandemic has arguably made keeping secrets a little more difficult, as the sequel Thor: Love and Thunder is being filmed in Australia, where stars have to quarantine upon arrival, making their presence there more obvious. That even applies to an actor who is himself Australian, like Russell Crowe, whom we ve known for a few weeks was filming a role in Thor: Love and Thunder, even if we didn t know what role he was playing. At the time, it seemed possible that Crowe s casting was another wink wink cameo like Matt Damon playing the Asgardian actor who portrays Loki on stage in Thor: Ragnarok, but Russell Crowe told an Australian radio show this week that he is instead playing the Greek god Zeus. The introduction of Zeus to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is significant not just because it expands the MCU beyond just Norse mythology, but also because it potentially sets up the introduction of long-time Avenger Hercules. Walt Disney Pictures is also developing a live-action adaptation of their 1997 animated film Hercules (Certified Fresh at 84%) to be produced by the Russo Brothers (the directors of the two most recent Captain America and Avengers movies). Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled for release on May 6, 2022, starring Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher.3. DOWNTON ABBEY 2 ARRIVING JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS  (Photo by ©Focus Features)While Downton Abbey was still on the air, the show regularly filled in the gap after the end of each season (except for the first) with a Christmas special. This week, Focus Features announced that filming has begun on the sequel to the 2019 Downton Abbey feature film (Certified Fresh at 84%), and it sounds like the sequel might be another Christmas-themed story (partly because Downton Abbey 2 is scheduled for Christmas, 2021). No actual premise details have been announced yet for Downton Abbey 2, but we do know about four new cast members. The rest of the large ensemble will be joined by Dominic West (The Wire, and Prince Charles in S5 of The Crown), Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Laura Haddock (Peter Quill s Mom in Guardians of the Galaxy), and French actress Nathalie Baye. Seemingly confirming the Christmas theme for Downton Abbey 2, Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said, There s no place like home for the holidays, and we can t imagine a better gift than getting to reunite with Julian, Gareth, and the entire Downton family in 2021 to bring the Crawley s back home for their fans. 4. SING STREET DIRECTOR TAKING ON THE FASCINATING RHYTHM OF GEORGE GERSHWIN (Photo by Andrew Schwartz/©Weinstein Company courtesy Everett Collection)Like many filmmakers on his level, Steven Spielberg is at any one time developing a number of projects, some of which don t end up happening. Spinning the clock back to 2010, there was once a time when Spielberg was developing a biopic about the life of composer George Gershwin in which Zachary Quinto would have starred (until it was eventually scrapped a while back). Fast forward 11 years to the present, and a different George Gershwin-themed film called Fascinating Rhythm is now in development, with Marin Scorsese aboard as one of the producers, and Irish filmmaker John Carney (Once, Sing Street) is attached to direct. Fascinating Rhythm is being described as an original musical drama that focuses on a young woman’s magical journey through past and present New York City, inspired by the life and music of American composer George Gershwin. It s not yet known who might be cast to star in Fascinating Rhythm.5. ANTOINE FUQUA TO DIRECT ALL-BLACK REBOOT OF CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (Photo by Scott Garfield/©Columbia Pictures)Some classic writers are cinematic evergreens (Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens, for example), but others are not as in vogue as they once were. Tennessee Williams is definitely in that category, having given us several hits in the 1950s, including The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Suddenly Last Summer, but not much in the way of major Hollywood productions in the decades since. If a Tennessee Williams cinematic revival is indeed looming, it might be coming to us from an unexpected source. Frequent Denzel Washington collaborator Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) is now attached to produce and direct a new film adaptation of Tennessee Williams play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, adapted from the 2008 Broadway production featuring an all-black cast that included Terrence Howard, Phylicia Rashad, and James Earl Jones. It s not yet known if any of them will return for this film.6. JIM HENSON BIOPIC MUPPET MAN TO BE PRODUCED BY DAUGHTER LISA HENSON (Photo by ©ABC courtesy Everett Collection)Among the projects that spend the longest time in film development, a frequent theme is celebrity biopics, which can sometimes take decades to get produced for a variety of reasons. Some examples include films about Janis Joplin, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, San Kinison, Richard Pryor, and Martin Luther King, Jr. One similar case can be found back in the February 8, 2008 edition of the Weekly Ketchup, which just happens to be this writer s very first entry in this column. Thirteen years later, the world still hasn t gotten the long-in-development Jim Henson biopic, but his daughter Lisa Henson is now putting together a project called Muppet Man to be produced by The Jim Henson Company and Walt Disney Pictures (which has been the Muppets corporate home since 2004). Although described as a biopic, the premise of Muppet Man will reportedly focus on Henson s struggle in the 1970s to convince broadcasters that The Muppets was a great idea and how he worked to get the characters on air where they became a comedy staple. The screenwriter currently working on Muppet Man is Michael Mitnick (The Giver, The Current War).7. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 SET PHOTOS REVEAL FAN FAVORITE KNUCKLES (Photo by SEGA)The ending of Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%) teased the introduction of Tails the Two-Tailed Fox, so we ve known pretty much all along that Tails was almost guaranteed to co-star in next year s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (4/8/2022). This week, however, set photos from Canada where Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently being filmed revealed that in addition to prop stand-ins for Sonic and Tails, there is also one for Knuckles the Red Echidna, one of Sonic s long-time racing rivals. We don t yet know who might be voicing Knuckles (or Tails), or really, much else about the sequel as of yet.8. DISNEY REBOOTING HAUNTED MANSION THEME PARK ADAPTATION (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Certified Fresh at 79%) was a hit that inspired several sequels, but it might be easy to forget that in the 2000s, Walt Disney Pictures attempted to adapt other theme park attractions as movies (like, say, The Country Bears) with far less success. Another theme park adaptation that flopped for Disney was 2003 s The Haunted Mansion (Rotten at 14%) starring Eddie Murphy, but 18 years later, it looks like Disney is ready to attempt another adaptation. Disney has hired Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) to direct a new movie based on the Haunted Mansion theme park attraction, which will be adapted from a screenplay by Katie Dippold (The Heat, Snatched). We should also note that about 10 years ago, Walt Disney Pictures had been working with horror filmmaker Guillermo del Toro on a Haunted Mansion reboot one of his unrealized passion projects that was eventually shelved.9. VIN DIESEL TO STAR IN TOY MOVIE ROCK EM SOCK EM ROBOTS (Photo by George Kraychyk/©Paramount)Several years ago, when we were frequently hearing about new movie projects based on popular toys (spurred on mostly by the success of The LEGO Movie in 2014), some people online started joking about the inevitiblity of a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie (until, almost inevitably, an actual Hungry Hungry Hippos movie project actually did enter development). Another game that was popular in the 1970s that had a similar mechanism was Rock Em Sock Em Robots, and that boxing game is finally getting its own movie as well. Vin Diesel is already attached to star in Rock Em Sock Em Robots, although it s unclear if he will be playing one of the boxing robots or perhaps a human coach, a la Hugh Jackman in Real Steel. Rock Em Sock Em Robots is being produced for Universal Pictures by Mattel Films and Vin Diesel s One Race Films production company. That was actually the first of two new Vin Diesel projects announced this week, as he is also attached to star in an action thriller called Muscle for director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), who previously directed Vin Diesel in A Man Apart (Rotten at 11%) and The Fate of the Furious (Fresh at 67%). The premise of Muscle is being kept secret. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Borderlands, Dungeons Dragons, Scream 5, and Spider-Verse 2. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI CONFIRMED TO DIRECT A STAR WARS MOVIE(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Back in January, the week s Top Story was that Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi was in talks to direct an upcoming Star Wars movie, and this week, that project got a little bit closer to actually happening. Waititi s negotiations with Disney have now been completed, and Waititi will also co-write his Star Wars movie along with screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who just last year made her feature film debut writing 1917, for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Walt Disney Pictures currently has three Star Wars movies scheduled for December in the years 2022, 2024, and 2026, but it is unclear in which year Waititi s film might be released. One obvious factor is that Waititi also still has to start filming Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently scheduled for release on February 11, 2022 (which suggests that he probably would not be able to also deliver a Star Wars movie just ten months later).Other Top Headlines1. TOM CRUISE TO BE THE SOLAR SYSTEM S FIRST OUTER SPACE MOVIE STAR (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)It was probably always inevitable, but Hollywood is finally making its way to outer space, and one of the industry s biggest stars will be along for the ride. Tom Cruise and Elon Musk s Space X are now collaborating on the solar system s first narrative feature film to be filmed in outer space. The action adventure will not be part of Cruise s Mission: Impossible franchise, and no studio is currently attached. It s also not yet known who will be writing or directing the film, which is an important point, because that director will ostensibly have to make repeated trips into space. NASA was also quick to announce this week that the project will also film on the International Space Station, which suggests that Cruise may be spending some time on the station himself, possibly for an extended period. Cruise will next be seen in Top Gun: Maverick (12/23/2020), and then in Mission: Impossible 7 (11/19/2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (11/4/2022).2. CATE BLANCHETT IN TALKS TO STAR IN BORDERLANDS VIDEO GAME ADAPTATION(Photo by Lisa Tomasetti/©Sony Pictures Classics)Despite some recent Fresh efforts, we re not quite at the point where it would be normal to consider Academy Award winners for video game movies. Maybe this week s casting news is a sign of change in the air, though, because current Mrs. America star Cate Blanchett is now in talks to star in the Borderlands movie as popular character Lilith, A.K.A. the Firehawk (and a member of the Siren class). Borderlands is a first-person shooter franchise set on a distant mining colony planet in the far future, and the games are known for their humor and quirky characters. Lionsgate s Borderlands will be directed by Eli Roth, who is currently best known for horror movies like Hostel and The Green Inferno (and for co-starring in Quentin Tarantino s Inglourious Basterds). With Blanchett now in the mix, the standard for has been raised a bit for the rest of the cast selections.3. DISNEY RUMORED TO WANT KAREN GILLAN AS NEW PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN STAR (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)We should state very clearly right up front that this story is currently a rumor, but it also comes from a site that just last week was the first to report on Disney s plans for a live-action Hercules remake from producers Joe and Anthony Russo. If their source is accurate, Walt Disney Pictures is reportedly hoping to cast Karen Gillan, who already stars as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the new female lead in the upcoming reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean. If true, Gillan would play the character Redd, who has already been a meet and greet character at Disney s theme parks since 2018. There is no current release date or any other information about a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie (including whether Redd will definitely be the lead character), but the expectation is that Johnny Depp will probably not return as Captain Jack Sparrow.4. JUNGLE CRUISE STARS DWAYNE JOHNSON AND EMILY BLUNT TO REUNITE FOR BALL AND CHAIN (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson co-starred together in Disney s Jungle Cruise, which has been pushed back a full year to July 30, 2021 from its original release date (July 24, 2020). Even so, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are already preparing for another film together as they are both attached to star in the superhero project Ball and Chain, based on a 1999 comic book. Johnson and Blunt will play a married couple planning on breaking up who end up with super powers but only when they re together. The Ball and Chain screenplay was written by Emly V. Gordon, who is best known for The Big Sick (Certified Fresh at 98%), a comedy about her own relationship with Kumail Nanjiani. In somewhat related news, Arrowverse showrunner Marc Guggenheim is now writing an adaptation of Rob Liefeld s Prophet, about a cryogenically frozen super-soldier who is mistakenly awaken before the mission for which he was created.

Christopher Nolan stuck to his guns and insisted that Tenet would play in theaters, and Warner Bros. had a hell of a time trying to figure out the best way to respect Nolan s wishes. Disney s live-action remake of Mulan, however, chose not to follow suit, opting instead to premiere on the Disney+ streaming service for a premium fee. This is, of course, the latest in the Mouse House s efforts to reimagine some of their most beloved animated classics as live-action films, and unlike some of their recent attempts, Mulan is impressing the critics so far. Liu Yifei stars in the title role as a young woman who dresses as a man in order to represent her family in the Chinese imperial army, and the reviews say she offers a charismatic performance that holds the film together. They also say the action choreography is fantastic, the visuals are stunning, and the choice to eschew the original film s musical elements in favor of a more grounded action-drama results in a more mature film. The youngest viewers may not find Niki Caro s film as compelling, but you can always throw on the colorful animated original for them.Available on Disney+ for .99 on September 4; available to all Disney+ subscribers on December 4.
It s estimated that between 75 and 90 percent of films made before 1929 are either lost or only exist in incomplete form. As part of our RT Archives project, we are collecting contemporaneous reviews for those films – see a full list here and read what critics said about them at the time – and shining a spotlight on the stories and people behind them. Learn more about the RT Archives project here. Mr. Babadook – the tall and top-hatted monster from Jennifer Kent’s acclaimed film The Babadook – might be the most iconic horror villain of recent times. (Don’t believe us? Check out the memes… or just leave your house on Halloween evening.) But while the Babadook is a marvel of modern horror, its roots date back to the earliest days of cinema, and to one film in particular: the Lon Chaney-starring London After Midnight. Here, as part of our RT Archives project, we take a look at that film and how its distinctive visuals inspired one of recent horror’s most celebrated works. To read reviews of director Tod Browning’s 1927 London After Midnight, a murder mystery flavored with ghouls and hypnosis, is to know that it is terrifying. The Film Daily wrote that “Lon Chaney s latest chill raiser [has] a story certain to disturb the nervous system of the more sensitive picture patrons.” But modern audiences will never know just how nerve-wracking the film is. Although it has been reconstructed by Rick Schmidlin with the help of recovered still photographs, a script, and new score by Robert Israel – you can find details of that effort at TCM – audiences can no longer see London After Midnight in its original form: the only known remaining copy was destroyed in an MGM vault fire in the 1960s.(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Trawl through contemporary reviews, though, and you see that a major contributor to the film’s overall creepiness was a mysterious character who – spoiler alert! – is later revealed to be Scotland Yard Inspector Professor Edward C. Burke in disguise. Of the limited imagery from the film that remains, it s this figure, with his bulging eyes, pointed teeth, and distorted grin, that stands out. The Sydney Morning Herald’s April 30, 1928 review addressed the effect of the creature at the time: “The few moments when a squat black figure like a bat, with glaring eyes and enormous teeth, is seen coming down the stairs in company with a woman in grey robes, whose face is terrifying in its corpse-like absence of expression, imprint themselves very strongly on the mind.”The role was fittingly played by famed character actor Chaney, known as “the man of a thousand faces” due to his ability to apply his own makeup and prosthetics, and distort his body for the many roles that required it. He utilized those skills to deliver memorable performances in The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, among others. But it was the wide-eyed, grinning Professor Burke that might have been his most singularly disturbing; at the very least, according to a 1928 Photoplay review, the costuming and makeup used “was as gruesome as any [Chaney] had ever worn.” In December of 1927, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle wrote, “Mr. Chaney obligingly applies a figurative bit of ice to the vertebrae by walking in and out of scenes in properly horrifying makeup.”(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection )Keen-eyed movie fans immediately saw similarities between “The Man In the Beaver Hat,” as Chaney’s London After Midnight figure came to be known, and Mr. Babadook, the creature from a mysterious pop-up book who enters the home – and/or minds – of a grieving mother and her young son in Kent’s The Babadook. There’s the hat, the black-rimmed eyes, and the exaggerated mouth and teeth. In 2014, Kent told the Mountain Express that the image of Chaney in the 1927 movie “really impressed itself upon me.”She added in the same interview: “What I loved about that particular image – and you can also see it in the footage we used of [Chaney] in the movie on TV from Phantom of the Opera – is that you can see that it’s a person’s face. It’s just a face that’s been distorted – without CGI obviously – but manipulated so that it looks human, but almost not. And I think that London After Midnight, shot with his face and his mouth pulled apart like that, is really frightening.”There is a thematic similarity, too, between how both creatures are handled in Browning and Kent’s films. In The Babadook, the creature is more than a terrifying specter who must be vanquished for Essie Davis’s Amelia to move on – he becomes something that the protagonist must learn to make space for in her life. In London After Midnight, Chaney’s mysterious figure is misunderstood as well: He’s ultimately not a villain, and becomes a key part of solving the film’s mystery.(Photo by ©IFC Midnight)That turn resonates with something Chaney told journalist Ruth Waterbury in the same issue of Photoplay in which London was so well reviewed – and his performance deemed “perfect.” “I’ve tried to show that the lowliest people frequently have the highest ideals,” Chaney said. “In the lower depths when life hasn’t been too pleasant for me I’ve always [had] that gentleness of feeling, that compassion of an under dog for a fellow sufferer.”London After isn’t Chaney’s only lost film.  Many of the short silent films from his early career are considered lost, like  The Chimney’s Secret, An Elephant On His Hands, Father and the Boys, Almost an Actress, as well as later film The Big City, another collaboration with director Tod Browning from 1928. You can our guide to cinema s lost films and read reviews of those films here.London After Midnight was released in theaters December 3, 1927. The Babadook was released in U.S. theaters November 28, 2014. On an Apple device? 亚美体育app最新版 Tracking services took another hit this weekend, though maybe not as sharp as the one that Warner Bros. got. After all they were relying on the optimism that their Harley Quinn film was going to live up to the expectations that box office watchers had based on the awareness of their advertising. The result is a number that looks decent in a rather downbeat start to 2020, but is far from what anyone associated with the project wanted looking forward.King of the Crop: Birds of Prey Tops Weekend, but Disappoints(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)For weeks Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) was being touted for an opening in the million range. That would be in the Shazam!/Green Lantern range for DC properties and was already subject of some concern for the reported million production. Word-of-mouth and international sales were going to be essential to making the film a hit with 0 million worldwide the magic number to begin having that conversation. If the film were able to follow the paths of those two other films, it could have ended up in the 6 million–0 million range domestically and probably cross its profit margin with no issue. But at least part of that journey may be over right from the get-go.A .25 million start for Birds of Prey puts it in a rather precarious position. Only a third of the films opening in February between million– million have crossed the 0 million line: Get Out, Identity Thief, The Lego Movie 2, and Just Go With It. The writing was seemingly on the wall Friday morning. While some were touting million in Thursday previews as a solid start, all one had to do was look at the films grossing that specific amount to suggest Birds was off to a rocky start. The two R-rated films with that start — Annabelle: Creation ( million opening) and Blade Runner 2049 (.75 million) — a prequel and sequel from WB finished with 2 million and million, respectively. (The PG-13 films opened between million–75 million.)The film could still be saved by its international release, however. Last year, Shazam! grossed over 4 million overseas, and that is the lowest showing for a DC property since 2011 when Green Lantern only accumulated an additional 3 million internationally. Birds of Prey debuted with million overseas.

(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection. Thumbnail: A24 / Courtesy Everett Collection; Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection.)The Best Asian-American Movies of All TimeBetween Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, and Always Be My Maybe in recent years, there s been a surge in Asian-American representation on screens of all sizes. These films are milestones in what has been a long, continuous journey to be seen and heard in theaters and at home, and we celebrate those contemporary hits and everything else that has come before them with the 65 Best Asian-American Movies. To be Asian-American means a personal identity spread across a coalition of different countries. Under this umbrella is a wide range of Pacific Ocean cultures and histories, countries whose people have also found a new life in the United States. The movies in our guide reflect their experiences, from Korean (Columbus, Minari), Chinese (Saving Face), Singaporean (Shirkers), Japanese (To Be Takei), Filipino (The Debut), Vietnamese (Green Dragon), and more. South Asian-American films included are The Big Sick, The Namesake, and Meet the Patels. We selected movies where the Asian-American experience drives character and story, or had a significant impact on Asian-American audiences due to its casting, the filmmakers behind it, and for breaking representational ground (Searching, To All The Boys I ve Loved Before). The Asian-American experience is sometimes about traveling to a foreign home country, explored in movies like Always Tomorrow in Hong Kong, Go Back to China, and Cavite. And sometimes the experience is about coming to America and becoming citizens, as in Journey From the Fall or Tigertail. These stories start overseas, but are also set and shot in America, so we included those. The historical landmark films are here, including Chan Is Missing, The Joy Luck Club, and Better Luck Tomorrow. All except for Flower Drum Song: This 1961 musical was the first major Hollywood production to have an Asian-American cast, but it s also Rotten on the Tomatometer. We included only Fresh movies, with at least 10 reviews, before ranking them using our ranking formula, takes into factor the movie s year of release and its number of reviews. With all that said, we present the Best Asian-American Movies of all time!

亚美体育app最新版 (Photo by Gabor Kotschy / Courtesy A24)Few actors have received the Academy’s recognition for performances in genre cinema, despite the sometimes stunning interpretations those stories allow for. Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Sigourney Weaver (Aliens), Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs), Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), and, more recently, Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) are among the limited exceptions to that unfortunate truth. The dismissal of Toni Collette’s remarkable turn in Ari Aster’s terrifying Hereditary, as a mother on the brink of losing her sanity in the face of supernatural tragedy, proved that Oscar voters don’t often see the work in horror, science-fiction, fantasy, and their many subsets on the same plain as the more traditionally dramatic work they celebrate year after year. For every star that earns a nomination for a biopic, countless others miss out for daring parts in boundary-pushing genre productions. This, of course, doesn’t mean that great acting in genre films isn’t out there consistently. This year alone, Lupita Nyong o has received considerable praise for her dual turn in Jordan Peele’s Us – and has racked up a few awards already – and so has Willem Dafoe for his role in the bizarre black-and-white buddy nightmare The Lighthouse. However, there were many other actors who challenged themselves playing offbeat characters or the grounded-in-reality centers of some excellent genre fare.Psychologically complex characters abound in these movies, which present unique challenges for the actors embodying them – being haunted by malevolent specters, lost in space, tormented by mental illness, or adored by cult members is no easy task. Below, we’ve highlighted 12 actors whose blood-curdling, exhilarating, and even moving appearances in genre movies released in the U.S. this year impressed us enough to advocate for their well-deserved accolades.Take note, Academy. What was your favorite genre performance of the year? Let us know in the comments. BILL HADER, It: Chapter Two (2019) 62% (Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)The Role: Richie Tozier, a comedian who returns to his hometown to face a killer clown alongside his childhood posse. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Hader’s adult version of Richie captures the spirit of the character as played by Finn Wolfhard in the first installment of Andy Muschietti’s two-part saga. He grapples with the past through humor and in turn adds a thin layer of lightness to the gruesome saga of the Losers Club, who return to Derry to find that Pennywise — the supernatural being that wants them dead and won’t leave them alone — isn’t gone. Instead of playing Richie’s coping mechanism purely for laughs, the gifted actor fully embodies Richie and his inner turmoil, building up to a tear-inducing finale. Having said that, seeing Hader as a self-deprecating trash-talker who doesn’t miss a single moment to make a joke, even when someone has just been murdered, is a weird pleasure we don’t feel guilty about.MILES ROBBINS, Daniel Isn't Real (2019) 84% (Photo by © Samuel Goldwyn Films)The Role: An introverted college student haunted by a diabolical imaginary friend. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Although you might remember Robbins as the man bun-wearing hipster in parental comedy Blockers or the doomed hipster boyfriend in 2018’s Halloween, he has serious range, and it’s on display in Adam Egypt Mortimer’s psychological horror feature. As Luke, a student struggling with his own mental health while caring for his schizophrenic mother, the actor essentially delivers two distinct personalities: First, he is an insecure young man dabbling in dating, but when his old imaginary pal Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger) returns, he becomes aggressively masculine right until the new personality fully takes over. The last segment of this under-the-radar creepout gives Robbins the opportunity to truly go all-out with the transformative nature of his performance.SOFIA BOUTELLA, Climax (2018) 68% (Photo by © A24)The Role: The leader of a French dance troupe that collectively devolves into a drug-induced trip into madness. Why It’s Award-Worthy: What the Algerian-born French dancer, model, and actress brings to Gaspar Noé’s intoxicating and provocative vision is sheer emotional rawness. Following a string of action movies – including Kingsman: The Secret Service, Atomic Blonde, and The Mummy – Boutella entered the void of the auteur’s latest mind-bending project to great results. Drugged out of her mind, Selva, her character, roams around a gym where her fellow dancers have also ingested an unknown substance and are morphing into instinct-driven beasts. From executing the incredible choreography that opens Climax to her furious outbursts and the disturbing mindlessness she exhibits, the talented multi-hyphenate lures us into this dehumanized underworld with every wild step. Physical and visceral throughout, Boutella brims with fiery energy.REBECCA FERGUSON, Doctor Sleep (2019) 78% The Role: Rose the Hat, the head of the True Knot cult that preys on Shiners and feeds off of their psychic powers. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Ferguson’s flamboyant villain is part Mad Hatter and part ruthless vampire. In the Swedish thesp’s hands, Rose the Hat exudes a mixture of sophistication and cruelty enhanced by her sleek outfit and centuries-old hat. There’s an unnerving self-assurance in her despicable mission that makes us fear and admire her. Previously seen in blockbusters like Mission: Impossibles Rogue Nation and Fallout and The Greatest Showman, Ferguson has continued to build momentum, and this Stephen King adaption is no exception. Even if critical reception for Doctor Sleep wasn’t unanimously positive –it’s sitting just inside the Certified Fresh zone – Rose the Hat became a fan favorite. Whether she is stealing the life force out of a person cursed with the Shining – rather horrifically in one pivotal scene – or reading their thoughts from a supermarket, she rocks the nefariousness.GUGU MBATHA-RAW, Fast Color (2018) 81% (Photo by © Codeblack Films)The Role: Ruth, a recovering drug addict from a lineage of Black women with superpowers who’s on the run from government agents. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Despite its hyper-limited release and muted reception at the box office, Julia Hart’s sophomore feature found an audience and some serious affection through online word-of-mouth. One of its major assets is Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s commanding presence as a young mother with substance abuse issues caused in part by her inability to control the super-human abilities she was born with. Far from a one-dimensional superhero type, Ruth is conflicted about her life choices and even more so about the power she didn’t ask for. The actress subtly and skillfully conveys the pent-up frustration and guilt the protagonist carries for not being a part of her young daughter’s life in a world where water is scarce. The genre elements are always present, but Fast Color works because it cares more about the multigenerational relationships between Mbatha-Raw and her co-stars Saniyya Sidney and Lorraine Toussaint.ISABELLE HUPPERT, Greta (2018) 60% (Photo by Shane Mahood / © Focus Features)The Role: A deranged European widow obsessed with befriending younger women. Why It’s Award-Worthy: There are no limits to the ways in which French icon Isabelle Huppert can surprise us with each new credit she puts under her elegant belt. For Irish director Neil Jordan’s ’90s-style stalker-thriller, she embraces one of the most wonderfully demented women she has personified in her jaw-droppingly prolific career. In the skin of the title character, a mysterious widow desperate for attention, Huppert goes full-on cuckoo as she lurks around New York City and harasses Chloë Grace Moretz’s character. A scene inside a restaurant where she loses her temper and another where she maniacally twirls while holding a dangerous syringe make for something deliciously unexpected. Nominated for an Oscar once before for Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, as a rape survivor seeking revenge, the goddess of international cinema clearly has no plans to stop amazing us.MARIANNE JEAN-BAPTISTE, In Fabric (2018) 91% (Photo by © A24)The Role: Sheila, a bank teller who buys a new red dress to get back into the dating scene, but ends up being tormented by the wicked garment. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Knitted within Peter Strickland’s giallo-infused horror diptych is a sharp commentary on the weaknesses and desires we all try to escape or fulfill and how evil prays on them. That’s why having Oscar-nominated actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets Lies) act as the emotional anchor of this stylish contender for the most WTF movie of the year feels essential. Sheila is not a mere vehicle for the movie’s madness or just another victim, but rather a woman who wishes to find a partner, whose relationship with her adult son has deteriorated because of his live-in girlfriend, and who, on top of that, has to deal with a freakish piece of clothing that turns her washing machine into a deadly weapon. The near-absurdity of a screenplay centered on a killer dress is grounded thanks to Jean-Baptiste.BRAD PITT, Ad Astra (2019) 83% (Photo by 20th Century Fox)The Role: Roy McBride, a decorated major in the U.S. Space Command and the son of a legend. Why It’s Award-Worthy:  Each time a melancholic Brad Pitt wearing an astronaut suit stares into the camera in James Gray’s powerful sci-fi drama, we can sense a profound emptiness, an emotional void that not even an accomplished professional life can fill. With Earth’s future threatened by a phenomenon known as the surge, Major McBride is sent on an outer space mission to save the planet, which may force him to confront his long-lost father. Set in a near future where the moon has become just another enclave of humanity’s voracious ambitions, this spiritual space odyssey is, at its core, a father-son story focused on a man looking for intimate answers in the vastness of the universe. An understated Pitt, both on screen and in voiceover, delivers some of his most finely tuned work.EMILY BEECHAM, Little Joe (2019) 67% (Photo by Chris Harris / © Magnolia Pictures)The Role: Alice, a scientist who creates a “happy flower” meant to help improve the owner’s mood, but instead produces perverse side effects. Why It’s Award-Worthy: The jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival made a point by awarding Beecham the Best Actress prize for her subdued performance in this eerie slice of science-fiction. Her cerebral character, Alice, is a meticulous plant-breeder and a mother whose most ambitious enterprise yet is a sterile flower that requires lots of care to make it produce a hormone that’s supposed to make people joyful. Beecham begins the film stoically, with her Alice uninterested in developing any relationships at work; it’s only when her teenage son Joe s (Kit Connor) attitude changes, possibly because of her creation, that she loses her controlled façade. It’s a mostly internal performance, but the precise Beecham knows exactly when to imbue her gaze to communicate anguish, disbelief, and regret. Not a typical awards-winner, but it should be.FLORENCE PUGH, Midsommar (2019) 83% (Photo by © A24)The Role: Dani, an American woman coping with a devastating family tragedy while on a bizarre trip to an almost otherworldly Swedish festival. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Flower crowns can’t hide the immense grief and romantic woes that afflict a young American couple on the brink of separation in Ari Aster’s sun-drenched terror fest. As Dani, Pugh’s face flits between gut-wrenching fear, disappointment, delirious joy, and ultimately menacing empowerment. In her darkest hour, the strange cult that welcomes her could actually mean her salvation. Pugh has enjoyed a banner year with Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and her incredible but under-seen lead role as an aspiring wrestler in Fighting with My Family. It’s difficult to argue which of these three efforts is the greatest, but the notable physicality and mentally draining situations that Midsommar required may tip the needle in its favor. Still, having multiple praise-worthy releases in a single year automatically makes her the queen of the whole year, not just May, in our opinion.TAKAYUKI HAMATSU, One Cut of the Dead (2017) 100% (Photo by © Shudder)The Role: A spineless director tasked with creating an absurd zombie movie for Japanese television. Why It’s Award-Worthy: In this ingenious horror-comedy movie about making movies, Takayuki Hamatsu, making his movie debut, breathes life into a filmmaker whose bad reputation has pushed him to take whatever job he can get – including a low-budget zombie production to be broadcast live on TV. A natural pushover, the fictional director endures criticism from his daughter and wife at home, but once on set he must act tough to brave the ridiculous obstacles that await him. On the surface, Hamatsu’s hilarious take on an incompetent creator finding a new alter-ego behind and in front of the camera could seem broad, something we’ve seen before. But what’s required of him – and what he delivers – is a deft understanding of the screenplay’s tonal shifts and the movie-within-a-movie-within-a-movie mechanics of this incredibly clever piece of cinema. He gifts us laugh-out-loud brilliance.SAMARA WEAVING, Ready or Not (2019) 88% (Photo by © Fox Searchlight)The Role: Grace Le Domas, a bride who unknowingly marries into a murderous family. Why It’s Award-Worthy: When we first meet Grace, right before she walks down the aisle, her spirited demeanor is infectious. She is unequivocally ecstatic to be getting married, and that effervescence follows her right up to the moment when she discovers that her now-husband’s family treasures a psychopathic and ritualistic tradition: Her in-laws, the Le Domases, want to murder her before dawn via a gory game of hide-and-seek. Weaving, an up-and-coming Australian actress, handles this transition from joy to panic, and later to pure survival mode, with complete believability – and never loses her edgy sense of humor. This is a woman in love forced to rip apart her gorgeous dress, dodge literal bullets, and bash people’s heads in order get through the night. As the twisted plot escalates, the darker parts of Grace awaken, and Weaving renders that blend of emotions impeccably.JUAN RAMÓN LÓPEZ, Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017) 97% The Role: El Shine, a jaded young boy trying to survive in a merciless Mexican ghost town. Why It’s Award-Worthy: Issa López’s unforgettable dark fantasy features a remarkable troupe of young performers, many of them first-timers, as a group of children fending for themselves in a nameless Mexican city where criminals run the streets and most people have mysteriously disappeared. Among the cast, Juan Ramón López stands out as a young man whose innocence has been ravaged by his environment. But when Estrella (Paola Lara), a girl searching for her missing mother, joins the crew, El Shine shows glimpses of the child’s buoyancy that he’d suppressed. Playing a kid who’s far from likable and contains such heavy emotions at such a young age could easily be daunting, but López channels the right amount of anger and determination into his character. Are you as obsessed with awards as we are?
