(Photo by © 20th Television)After the 80s saw a boom of horror movies that became commercial successes, the 90s saw the genre open up to a whole new audience: kids. The decade was a golden age for gateway horror stories that introduced the genre to youngsters, with several shows scaring the hell out of them every week – while still providing some age-appropriate laughs. No matter how many of these shows and movies came out during this time, there was one that reigned supreme when it came to balancing scares with kid-friendly entertainment: Goosebumps, the Fox Kids show based on the works of prolific horror author R. L. Stine. For almost three decades, the Goosebumps episodes produced between 1995 and 1998 have been keeping kids in fits of fright and laughter. With the show celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, and Sony in development on a reboot, we re looking back on the original series and the ways in which it prepped a generation of kids to turn off the cartoons and turn towards a new and ghoulish genre. And Stine himself is helping us break it down.It understood that even really young kids liked the spooky stuff(Photo by © Hyperion Pictures / Everett Collection)Young-adult horror was not only a thing, but a major success by the time Goosebumps was released, but it was a genre mainly aimed at teenagers. That changed when author R. L. Stine started releasing the Goosebumps books in 1992, betting on the idea that kids even younger than that wanted to be scared too.Nearly 30 years later, Stine is still writing Goosebumps, and the children s horror landscape looks very different. No one had done a horror book for 7-to-12 year olds, it hadn t been done, Stine told Rotten Tomatoes. Twenty-eight years later and I m still doing it. Scholastic just asked for six more. I ll be 102 and still be writing these books. We may not have gotten Coraline or The House with a Clock in Its Walls if it wasn t for Goosebumps, and the franchise just got bigger once the TV show started airing. It knew when to scare us, and when to make us laugh (Photo by 20th Television)Before Goosebumps hit the airwaves, Are You Afraid of the Dark? had already scared kids for five years with its campfire-side spooky tales. What made Goosebumps special was how it took Stine s signature dry humor and made the TV show one that was scary enough for younger kids to dip their toes into the horror genre, but safe enough that it wouldn t traumatize them. The people who did Goosebumps [the series] really understood the combination of humor and horror so it wouldn t be too scary, says Stine, who started his career in comedy. If I think a scene is getting too intense, I just throw something funny to lighten it up. Every chapter in the Goosebumps books ends on a punchline. Horror and humor are very close together, and I think you get the same kind of visceral reaction from something funny or something scary, like when you go to a rollercoaster and hear people both laughing and people screaming. Indeed, the show was so successful as a gateway into horror because it eased audiences into it little by little, knowing when to pull back to let comedy deflate the tension. One of the best examples is Slappy the Dummy, the funny-yet-still-very-much-evil ventriloquist dummy who quickly grew into one of the most popular characters in the franchise (and the main villain in the 2015 theatrical film adaptation). I like writing Slappy sort of like an insult comedian, Stine says. I don t really get it, what s so scary about him, but people actually are scared of Slappy and like to send me mail and Tweets about it constantly. I think people are intrigued by an inanimate object coming to life. It featured seriously creepy – and catchy! – musicEvery series needs good theme music, something that sets the mood for what the show is about, and eases you into its world. What s Friends without The Rembrandts? Or The Simpsons without Danny Elfman s title theme? For Goosebumps, the opening music and the visuals that accompanied it were creepy enough to live up to the famous tagline, itself a play on the tagline of the books: Viewer beware, you’re in for a scare. It starts with the show s intro, in which Stine himself – or at least a man in a coat with a briefcase marked “R. L. Stine” – is walking in a field where his briefcase flies open, sending a flurry of papers and a ghostly “G” into the air. The “G” floats through a town, in front of a bunch of scary signs, and past a creepy dog from hell with glowing eyes. When I saw the dog, I used a dog barking sound in a couple of places to make it sound like the melody of the theme music, composer Jack Lenz told us. And that made everybody laugh, and I thought if the music can t scare you, at least it might make somebody laugh. It s a fun theme for people because it s simple, so it s easy to remember, and it sounds scary. Lenz brought that scary-fun mix to the music used within the episodes, too. Sometimes, if an episode wasn t as scary, the producer Bill Siegler would tell me to make the music scarier, he says. We d also use orchestra hits, which instantly makes a scene scarier. We got away with using them more than we probably should have. I thought the show was pretty scary for kids. Its twists left us gobsmacked, and took the edge off(Photo by © 20th Television )Three decades after Rod Serling stopped inviting us to The Twilight Zone, Goosebumps introduced kids to a world full of twist endings and surprise turns, often with thoughtful morals. From stories about monsters that turn out to be told from the point of view of the monsters themselves, to a scary summer camp that is revealed to be a training facility for aliens preparing to visit Earth, the ghouls of Goosebumps were rarely what they first appeared to be. I think this is why the books and the show are so liked by kids, because they re not linear, Stine says. I think kids like it if a story curves around, twists, and turns instead of going in a straight line. I try to think of an ending first so I can figure out how to keep kids from guessing the ending right away. The twists also helped balance the horror and humor, as they were often comic in nature. The series big reveals  often explained away monsters by making them something ordinary – if looked at a different way. (Which helped Goosebumps fans actually sleep at night.)Its practical effects were monster-y greatness (and still are)(Photo by © 20th Television)Goosebumps came out decades before spending millions of dollars on a single episode of TV was the norm for some networks, but even if the series early CGI hasn t aged particularly well, the creature effects still hold up. The very first episodes of the show, parts one and two of  The Haunted Mask, do a great job of selling the horror of the main creature because of just how good the practical masks still look. And who can forget the Carpenter-like blob from The Blob That Ate Everyone ? We had a great monster shop in Toronto, Stine says. These guys had a very low budget and they still came up with all the wonderful monsters and masks and all that stuff. For the very first one we did, ‘The Haunted Mask,’ they had four different masks, each one tighter than the last. That s still my favorite episode, it looks great even today. Goosebumps may not have been a huge production, but its creature effects offered young fans some ghastly imagery and a solid introduction to creature features. Add some sharp twists, creepy music and a great sense of humor, and you have the ingredients for the best 90s horror show aimed towards the  little ones. And one that they – now grown-up and gore-happy – still fondly remember.Goosebumps premiered on Fox Kids on October 27, 1995. Goosebumps is streaming on Netflix and available to rent or buy on Vudu and Amazon Prime. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk director Barry Jenkins knew from the moment he read Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Underground Railroad that he had to turn it into a series. And to do it right, he brought on board some of his longtime (and multi-award-winning) collaborators — among them composer Nicholas Britell and Joi McMillon — and assembled a cast of new and veteran actors to breathe life into the story, including breakout star Thuso Mbedu, who plays escaped slave Cora in the series. Ahead of the series’ launch on Amazon Prime Video, Jenkins spoke with Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley about the challenges of moving from the world of film to television and of telling a story that blends magical-realism — the “underground railroad” here is an actual train system under the earth — with heartbreakingly real and violent scenes wrenched directly from the darkest pages of American history. Coley also speaks with Mbedu and costars Aaron Pierre, Sheila Atim, Joel Edgerton, and William Jackson Harper about the casting process, working with Jenkins, and the sensitivity and care taken to ensure everyone felt comfortable and safe on set, despite the often traumatic material. The Underground Railroad premieres Friday, May 14, on Amazon Prime Video.

Almost 10 years to the day of Zombieland s 2009 release, the original director and cast are back in Zombieland: Double Tap. Is the sequel worth the wait? That s what we re asking movie critics Scott Mantz and Chauncey K. Robinson, as well as Rotten Tomatoes editor Alex Vo, in this deep and spoiler-heavy breakdown of the zom-com sequel. Do original cast members Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin still have that chemistry that made the first film a hit? And what about newcomers Rosario Dawson and Zoey Deutch? Is Double Tap as funny and gory as the original? And should we expect a Zombieland 3 come October 2029? Host Mark Ellis is asking the tough and fun questions as we tear into the flesh of Zombieland: Double Tap. Zombieland: Double Tap is in theaters now.Like this? (Photo by Syfy; BBC AMERICA; Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection)The past year has offered 12 TV seasons Certified Fresh at 100% — including The Good Place, Cobra Kai, Vida, and Dear White People — of 110 overall that are Certified Fresh. A voracious TV consumer could simply work their way down the list of every Certified Fresh TV show of 2018, or have a look at Rotten Tomatoes staff picks. Our editorial staff has considered the year in television and curated a list of series that may not have met the criteria for Certified Fresh, but nonetheless have captured our imaginations and earned our recommendation anyway. The Expanse 94%What It Is: In the 23rd century, after colonizing the solar system, humans make first contact with an alien race. But rather than meet face-to-whatever, the interaction occurs via the ancient, extinct race s super-advanced A.I. technology, which humanity struggles to understand, communicate with, and ultimately control. Why You Should Watch It: It s been 10 years since Syfy s Battlestar Galactica remake from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) went off the air. The series, which topped our list of the 100 best sci-fi series of all time, won worldwide fans through its gritty space-opera storylines about the human struggle with and against intelligent machines. The BSG world felt lived in, and its characters, both human and machine, presented a seemingly viable space-based future. The Expanse, which Amazon dramatically rescued from cancellation this year, is BSG s very worthy successor in offering a similarly complex sci-fi tale with engaging characters and award-worthy production design. It stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, and Thomas Jane. Why the show hasn t enjoyed the same level of worldwide appeal is one of the series greatest mysteries.Where to Watch: Amazon, Syfy (season 3)Commitment: around 25 hoursPicked By: Debbie Day, TV Features EditorBarry 99%What It Is: In this dry, sometimes unexpectedly somber HBO dark comedy, a professional killer for hire from the Midwest travels to Los Angeles for a hit and stumbles into an acting class, where he not only discovers a community of aspiring actors who welcome him but also begins to imagine a quieter, more normal life. Why You Should Watch It: Thanks to his up-for-anything enthusiasm and easygoing charisma — not to mention his impeccable comedic timing — SNL and Documentary Now alum Bill Hader has earned a sizable fanbase over the years. Those fans were always going to show up for Barry, no matter how good (or bad) it was. Fortunately, the series does a magnificent job balancing Hader s natural boyish charm and his less frequently utilized — but still incredibly effective — proficiency at communicating deep pathos (see: The Skeleton Twins), and he s aided by a stellar ensemble that includes Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Goldberg, and Henry Winkler in one of his finest roles in years.Barry begins with a funny idea, infuses it with real emotional investment, and tosses in a few Oh, sh ! moments just to keep you on your toes. Hader and Winkler have already taken home Emmys for their efforts, and they re both up for Golden Globes next, so now is as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about.Where to Watch: HBOGOCommitment: A little over 4.5 hoursPicked by: Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorBabylon Berlin What It Is: While investigating a pornography ring, Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) discovers a web of conspiracies with huge implications for Germany as a whole. Why You Should Watch It: The idea of the Weimar Republic (the era of German history that spanned from the end of World War I until the rise of the Nazis) has exerted a powerful fascination to this day. It was a time that produced a flowering of artistic expression — from the Bauhaus Movement to The Threepenny Opera, not to mention such cinematic masterworks as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel — and a moment of (relative) tolerance for LGBTQ people. It was also a time of political upheaval, during which a democratic government attempted to hold together a nation struggling with extreme economic insecurity, a time when communists and fascists brawled in the streets. Historians dispute some elements of this narrative as myth, but while Babylon Berlin may be imperfect history, it’s exhilarating entertainment. Its Berlin is all bright neon and dark shadows, decadent parties and sudden outbursts of violence, mysteries and underground plots. We all know the horrible ending to this story, but the characters in Babylon Berlin don’t, and seeing this tumultuous period through the lives of regular people living in the moment gives the whole thing an air of haunting pathos.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: Just shy of 16 hoursPicked By: Tim Ryan, Review Curation ManagerKilling Eve 89%What It Is: This badass British spy thriller follows two female leads — MI5 intelligence officer Eve (Sandra Oh) and international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) — who become obsessed with tracking each other down. Why You Should Watch It: There’s a reason Oh is getting finally getting her long-deserved award recognition for this role: She’s phenomenal as a mild-mannered government employee who heads up a task force to find a female assassin (an also-phenomenal Comer), beginning a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the two women. The BBC America series is also frequently incredibly funny, thanks to sharp writing from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag).Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunesCommitment: About 5.5 hoursPicked By: Jean Bentley, Assistant TV EditorPeaky Blinders 92%What It Is: A raw mob epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), a World War I veteran and leader of the “Peaky Blinders” gang, has started the family business of running a bookie service as well as providing local muscle. Why You Should Watch It: This gritty crime drama will keep you glued to your screen as Tommy tries to build his empire and cement his legacy, all while facing the ever-changing landscape of the new century post-WWI. Guns, gambling, influence, politics, and the streets — this show has it all. Great costume and set design lure viewers into 1919 England to experience the region s post-war trauma. See how far Tommy will go to make a buck and gain power and the collateral damage his family must endure because of it. The series did not offer a new season to U.S. audiences in 2018, but with season 5 coming in 2019, now is a perfect time to binge it.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 24 hoursPicked By: Shane Crocker, Motion Graphic DesignerChilling Adventures of Sabrina 81%What It Is: This comic book–adapted Netflix series from the creator of Riverdale is a dark reimagining of the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch story. Half-witch, half-mortal Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) refuses to sacrifice her human relationships in order to keep her witchy powers and must navigate the boundaries between the mortal and supernatural worlds. Why You Should Watch It: If you’re the kind of witch who wishes Halloween could be a year-long holiday, look no further than Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This show has plenty of campy magic and glamorous gore, but it’s more than flashy spells and Satanic references. Each of Sabrina’s allies — her aunts, cousin Ambrose, human friends, and demonic frenemies — has their own depth and intrigue, which makes their world colorful and worth a deep investment. It’s ultimately a coming-of-age story: Watching Sabrina come into her own, and change minds to do so, is exciting, empowering, and fun. She makes some big mistakes along the way, but who can blame her? She’s only just learning to play with hellfire.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 11 hoursPicked By: Sophie-Marie Prime, USC’s Rotten Tomatoes FellowForever 95%What It Is: Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen star as an ordinary married couple tethered to routine until a freak accident changes everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world. Why You Should Watch It: Much has been written about how Better Call Saul is an ode to the everyday (crime and dubious legal practices notwithstanding). They couldn t be more different, but if you re a fan of BCS, 2018 s Forever will appeal just as well. Created by Alan Yang of Master of None and featuring prolific comedic actors Rudolph and Armisen (do they ever sleep?), the show poses big questions while simultaneously offering tiny details for viewers to chew on long after the final episode of this compact series ends. Avoid spoilers as much as possible before indulging in this series, which somehow marries banality and longing to great effect.Where to Watch: AmazonCommitment: 4 hoursPicked By: Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorSchitt's Creek 93%What It Is: Schitt’s Creek is an amalgam of everything that is good and holy about Canadian entertainment. Why You Should Watch It: Led by Eugene Levy, his gorgeous son Dan, and their beautifully thick eyebrows, Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family, their fall from grace, and their new life in a tiny town surrounded by some of the most wonderful, eccentric, and underrated characters on TV. The series is a rare bird: both funny and heartwarming, while completely insane and totally relatable. In watching, I have laughed so hard I cried, but I have also cried so hard that I had to laugh (specifically, season 4, episode 6). The relationships, the chemistry, the number of wigs Moira owns, Alexis’ vocal fry, and so on — everything about this show is so perfectly curated that you would be hard pressed to find anything else like it on television.Where To Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, VuduCommitment: About 20 hoursPicked By: Zoey Moore, Community ManagerManiac 84%What It Is: Loosely based on a Norwegian show of the same name, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s mindtrip of a miniseries delves into the depths of the human mind with humor, heart, and just the right amount of heady conversations to keep you thinking. Why You Should Watch It: It’s the kind of show that can delicately explore the fragile folds that are the human mind and mental health, while still provoking a fully belly laugh (usually followed by a cathartic cry). Between Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s melancholy chemistry, the singular force of confidently neurotic nature that is Sonoya Mizuno, and Justin Theroux and Sally Field s “special” parent–child relationships (truly something to behold), you feel for each character you meet. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. It may sound kind of heady, but trust us, it’s worth the trip.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 6.5 hoursPicked By: Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation LeadTerrace House: Boys & Girls in the City What It Is: A reality series documenting the real lives of six roommates in Japan. Why You Should Watch It: For those who hate traditional reality TV and want insight into Japanese culture, this is your show. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of love triangles and conflict, but it’s more civilized. It’s the ultimate comfort watch! When you catch up with this season, there’s previous Terrace House series (“Boys and Girls in the City” and “Aloha State”) to enjoy!Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: There are 42 episodes available from the most recent season, all around 30 to 40 minutes each — and it runs through 52! The time commitment is A LOT, but SO worth it.Picked By: Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of ProductionHappy! 84%What It Is: Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Nick (Christopher Meloni), a degenerate hit man and ex cop, gets beaten up by mobsters only to wake up in the hospital seeing a cheerful blue unicorn named Happy (Patton Oswalt). Nick learns Happy is the imaginary friend of a kidnapped little girl named Hailey, who is being held captive by a demented Santa Claus. Happy won’t stop bothering Nick until they find Hailey and bring her to safety. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode. Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. Happy! is not for the faint of heart and is truly made for fans of antiheroes. The casting is also particularly fun, as Meloni is the polar opposite of his Law Order: SVU character. Think: the crazy cook in Wet Hot American Summer, but darker and more twisted.Where to Watch: Netflix, SyfyCommitment: About 6.5 hoursPicked By: Jason Blagman, AssistantElite 97%What It Is: Rich, sexy Spanish teens clash with working-class students at their elite private school, leading to murder. Why You Should Watch It: Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies meets Skins meets Cruel Intentions meets The O.C. meets Veronica Mars meets well, basically every single other of the very best teen dramas for this Spanish-language soap-to-end-all-soaps. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and  will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Pro tip: If you don t speak Spanish, Netflix will usually default to the dubbed version. To avoid that travesty, and make sure you select the European Spanish audio track.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 8 hoursPicked By: BentleyHappy Valley 98%What It Is: A kind of Fargo for the South of England, Happy Valley focuses on policewoman Catherine Cawood’s (Sarah Lancashire) personal and professional lives in the struggling, drug-ridden town for which the series is named. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried. Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. Happy Valley is another Netflix title that didn t release a new season in 2018, but will in 2019, making now a great time to binge.Where to Watch: Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, VuduCommitment: 12 hoursPicked by: Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefPose 98%What It Is: A look inside the underground ball scene in the 1980s, made famous by the documentary Paris Is Burning, in which competitors from various “houses” walk, dance, and/or perform in drag to win big trophies and bigger boosts social stature. Why You Should Watch It: That Pose is genuinely groundbreaking – it features a largely transgender cast, many of whom have not acted professionally before – was reason enough for many to tune in when the Ryan Murphy series premiered on FX in 2018. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. Porter, nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is a series standout, along with Indya Moore, whose complex relationship with married boy from the ’burbs Stan (Evan Peters) will break your heart.Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango Now, FX+, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTubeCommitment: 10 hoursPicked by: Meares

(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)This fall marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Zombieland, the well-reviewed horror comedy that entertained while instructing how to survive a zombie apocalypse. This fall will also see the long-awaited release of the hit movie’s sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap. That’s right, it’s time to nut up or shut up again and follow our favorite city-named characters as they re-kill some undead and maybe even search for more Twinkies. What’s in store for Columbus and the rest of the gang? What have they been up to this past decade? Will they accidentally murder anymore Hollywood icons? Here’s everything we know about the follow-up so far. What s Taken So Long?(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Ten years is a long wait for a sequel to a movie as popular as Zombieland, which grossed more than 0 million worldwide back in 2009. Everyone seemed ready to do another one soon afterward, but the usual Hollywood hurdles got in the way, some of them rather positive. The filmmakers and cast have all had a good and busy decade since the release of the original.Jesse Eisenberg became an Oscar nominee. Woody Harrelson, who had previously been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, earned a couple more nominations for Best Supporting Actor. Emma Stone was not only nominated for two Oscars herself, but actually won one for Best Actress in 2016, and she was just nominated for a third time. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick hit it big with Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Director Ruben Fleischer did a few more movies, including last year’s box office hit Venom, and a lot of television.(Photo by Official Zombieland Twitter)As it turns out, this was perfect timing for the cast of Zombieland to return for a sequel, if only for the fact that they could promote the project through a popular meme. On January 29, the official Zombieland Twitter account revealed the new title for the sequel in a tweet that also featured a new poster, with Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone, and Breslin recreating the one-sheet for the original. The image of them all older — and in Breslin’s case, taller — is a perfect entry in the #10YearChallenge trend of comparing how we look now with our 2009 selves. Also, this isn’t the first return to Zombieland. Back in 2013, Amazon Studios debuted a pilot for Zombieland: The TV Series alongside 13 other pilots and asked viewers to help decide which series would be picked up. Unfortunately, fans weren’t into the small-screen version of Zombieland, which was scripted by Reese and Wernick but featured a new cast, and Amazon opted not to produce any more episodes. “You guys successfully hated it out of existence,” Reese tweeted at the time.Everyone Is Excited to Be Back(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Despite all the success and elevated prestige the cast and creators have experienced in the last decade, everyone is back on board for this crazy ride. Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone, and Breslin will reprise their respective roles as Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock. And Fleischer is again at the helm, directing another script by Reese and Wernick, who are this time joined by The Expendables writer Dave Callaham. When Sony greenlit the sequel last summer, studio president Sanford Panitch said of the reunion: “No one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”Fleischer himself also spoke excitedly to Fandango last fall as he was prepping for the sequel. “I m thrilled,” he said. “I’ve been scouting and storyboarding and getting it going, and to get to work with that cast again is just an absolute dream come true. It s been really exciting starting to think about that movie, and to get to work with Emma, Jesse, Woody, and Abigail once again is truly a dream come true. Yeah, we re just at the very early stages, but we have an amazing script, and we re going to start shooting in Georgia in January.” Whatever the full synopsis and cast list entails, they’re up and running as of now filming began for Zombieland: Double Tap on January 21, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia.New Locations, New Friends, and New Zombies(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)What is the foursome up to this time around? The plot is being kept under wraps, of course, but does it really matter what the story is? All a Zombieland sequel needs to have is more hilarious zombie action and horror — not too complicated. We do know that Zombieland: Double Tap will involve another trek through the United States of Zombieland, however, this time taking the gang from the White House to the former American heartland. The film will also feature some new players in the game of zombie bashing, and yes, they’re also all nicknamed after places special to them. Rising star Zoey Deutch is Madison. Avan Jogia (TV’s Victorious) is a bad boy musician named Berkeley. And Rosario Dawson is Nevada. Hopefully we learn why her moniker is an entire state rather than a city.According to sparse details spreading about the premise of the sequel, Berkeley will be a love interest for Breslin’s Little Rock, who has separated from the rest of her group, and Nevada is a zombie hunter who connects with Eisenberg’s Columbus after some drama between him and Stone s Wichita further splits up the original cast.(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Meanwhile, as the four main characters have managed to stay alive for a decade by hunkering down in the presidential home, the hordes outside have also been surviving. According to reports of the plot, the gang will be facing “new kinds of zombies,” including smarter and stealthier varieties. I mean, it s been 10 years, so who knows what the world will look like at this point? Fleischer hinted to Fandango last fall. While it’s unconfirmed if Bill Murray will also return for the sequel as “himself,” rumor has it that his old Ghostbusters co-star and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Dan Aykroyd will make a cameo this time around as “Dan Aykroyd.” Would that mean we could look forward to Ernie Hudson or Sigourney Weaver in Zombieland 3?It ll Be Worth the Wait(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Ten years is a long time to wait for a sequel, and anticipation has just been building and building. Will it meet our expectations? Certainly there’s no pleasing everyone, but the decade delay has hopefully been for the best. Fleischer thinks so, as he told LRM last month: I think collectively we all felt very strongly that the only circumstance we’d be willing to make the movie is if it’s as good or better than the original. And none of us were willing to compromise on the quality of the movie. We worked on the script real hard to make sure that it was up to par with the original. And so, that was just a stipulation that we were all completely on the same page about. I’m proud to say I think our script is really great, in that the movie will be as good as the original if not better, and that’s why we’re all back. Zombieland: Double Tap  is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 11, 2019.

Ghcxuf If you really thought Michael Myers burned to death in Laurie Strode’s rat-trap basement bunker at the end of Halloween (2018), all we can say is we envy you in what is clearly your first slasher franchise experience. Not to stomp all over your new snow, but the Man in the William Shatner Mask is very much coming back again, along with ultimate Final Woman (c’mon, you’re not calling the incomparable Jamie Lee Curtis a “girl”) in Halloween Kills. With our full first glimpse at Part Two – Part 2 Vol. 2? Part 2B? – in the form of a just-released full trailer, this franchise has gotten extremely messy with its timelines and continuity. To help, we have gathered up everything we know so far about Haddonfield’s favorite son and his refusal to retire gracefully. This Is the Middle Chapter of a New – and Likely Final – TrilogyRight from the start, director David Gordon Green (Our Brand is Crisis, Pineapple Express) and writer Danny McBride (yes, that Danny McBride) planned their return to the Halloween franchise as a trilogy. In fact, they intended to shoot all three back-to-back-to-back but decided to pause in between: First to gauge the response to Halloween (2018) and make sure fans and new audiences were down with their franchise-course-correcting efforts, and second, because, reportedly, Halloween Kills was a really intense shoot. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress Andi Matichak (who plays Laurie Strode’s granddaughter, Allyson) explains, “They thought about doing them back to back. But Halloween Kills was just so ambitious. It was such an intense shooting schedule that it would have been a bit much to try to do them at the same time.” The final installment, bluntly titled Halloween Ends, is slated for a 2022 release. The Intention Is to Establish a Definitive Story Joel MearesPerhaps no horror franchise is messier than Halloween. You’ve got reboots, remakes, disowned sequels, and warring continuity all jumbled together into a hodgepodge of indecipherable nonsense. There’s the original 1978 Halloween, then the straight sequel Halloween II (which added the “huh?” element of Laurie being Michael’s sister), and then things get really nutty. Halloween III: Season of the Witch takes a hard left turn by having nothing at all to do with Michael Myers or Laurie Strode. (It’s a standalone story about a sinister corporation making killer Halloween masks.) The franchise then spiraled into increasingly silly and more generic cash-ins like Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (which added the “huh?” of Laurie having a daughter named Jamie out of nowhere); Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (said daughter shares a psychic link with Michael? Because, sure, why not?); Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (Um, Michael was “created” by a Druid cult?); then Halloween H20 (which sees Curtis return as Laurie because this movie pretends that Halloween 4, 5, and 6 didn’t happen – the first but not last instance of selective memory); and then Halloween: Resurrection (also known as the one where Michael fights Busta Rhymes). Exhausted? We’re not even done. After all this, Rob Zombie decided to do a complete reboot with Halloween (2007) that starts from scratch with new actors, and then he followed it up in 2009 with a second Halloween II. And finally, in 2018, Green and McBride gave us their own Halloween, which is actually a third try at Halloween II, since it s meant to be a direct sequel to the original 1978 Halloween and ignores everything that came after it. Whew. It’s a lot, but streamlining and focusing the main storyline is exactly what this franchise needs – especially since it looks like the events of Halloween, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends will all take place in a relatively short period of time. There Is No Time for DowntimeJoel MearesAs you can see at the start of the trailer, Halloween Kills implies the movie – like the 1981 Halloween II – will pick up immediately after Halloween. Very immediately. We see Laurie, her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and Allyson literally still in the back of the pick-up truck where we last saw them at the close of the first movie. It seems like the intention here is to keep the story tight and quick – all three movies may take place over the course of a few hours or days when all is said and done. The Gang s (Almost) All Here Although it’s a shame the late Donald Pleasence won’t be able to join in as indomitable Myers hunter Dr. Loomis, Halloween Kills is taking a page from Cobra Kai and bringing back all of the familiar faces (or at least character names) that it can. Actress Nancy Stephens will reprise her role as Marion Chambers, a nurse and colleague of Dr. Loomis who appears in the original Halloween (and the original Halloween II and is actually killed off in the opening of now-retconned Halloween H20) – which seems especially appropriate given that the trailer suggests Halloween Kills could heavily reference the original Halloween II with some hospital-based horror. Kyle Richards (of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fame) will return as Lindsey, one of the two kids Laurie babysat in the original 1978 film, and Charles Cyphers, who played Haddonfield sheriff Leigh Brackett (whose daughter Annie was one of the original film’s victims), will also be back. A grown-up Lonnie, who is name-checked in the 2018 movie, will actually show up too. And finally, the character of Tommy Doyle (the other kid Laurie babysat in 1978) will be back as well… for the second time. But Some Will Have New FacesYes, Tommy actually returned once before, in 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, where he was played by none other than Paul Rudd (Ant-Man). Read that again: Yes, it’s 100% true. Although it would be absolutely show-stopping if Rudd reprised his role in Halloween Kills, it’s just not happening. But Tommy will be played in Halloween Kills by another cult icon: Anthony Michael Hall.Halloween Kills Is About HaddonfieldJoel MearesThe 2018 Halloween dealt primarily with Laurie’s trauma, and how it shaped her life and turned her into a paranoid, bunker-dwelling alcoholic. But there is more than nostalgia behind bringing back so many old characters – Laurie wasn’t the only one traumatized by Halloween night, 1978. The trailer shows glimpses of the town s collective angst, and the movie was filmed under the working title “MOB RULES.” This installment is about all of Michael’s victims facing unstoppable evil once again and confronting their own traumas and scars – from the nurse who treated Michael in the sanitarium to the sheriff who couldn’t protect his own daughter, much less the town. It may be The Town of Haddonfield vs. Michael Myers. The Collective Anger Will Be Intentionally TimelyIn a recent interview, Curtis explained more about the “mob rule” theme behind Halloween Kills and how it was influenced by the politics of the past four years. She says the movie will deal with “what happens when trauma infects an entire community, and we’re seeing it everywhere, with the Black Lives Matter movement. We’re seeing it in action, and Halloween Kills, weirdly enough, dovetails onto that.” Speaking with NME, director Green added, “it’s one thing to be afraid of the Bogey Man, to have someone who might be in the closet, under the bed, creeping around your house, but what we wanted to explore next was confusion, misinformation, and paranoia. What happens when fear goes viral? You can’t stick your head under the covers anymore.”Only COVID-19 Could Stop Michael MyersHalloween Kills has been in the can for a while now. It was originally due to come out in October 2020 but was held back due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the mass closure of theaters. The Other Big Man Is Back, TooJoel MearesOne of the reasons fans were excited about the 2018 Halloween wasn’t just because it meant a proper return for Laurie Strode/ Jamie Lee Curtis (can you believe they tried to kill her off – via an off-screen car accident, no less – in Halloween 4? Put some respect on her name), there was another monumental reunion to celebrate. For the first time since the disastrous Halloween III, John Carpenter agreed to lend his name to a Halloween project not only as a producer but also to retool and revamp his classic score alongside his son (with The Fog actress Adrienne Barbeau) Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies (son of The Kinks’ Dave Davies). The trio will be back for Halloween Kills (and Halloween Ends). It s Going to Be Very Bloody Even Carpenter Was ShockedWhen asked by MovieWeb about Halloween Kills, new writer Scott Teems – who came on to collaborate with Green and McBride on the sequels – called it “like the first one on steroids, I guess. It really is the bigger, badder, meaner version of the first one.” If that’s enough to make horror hounds howl, even Carpenter himself was taken aback by the new film’s bloodlust. Speaking to IndieWire, Carpenter mentions seeing an early cut of the movie and describes it as “fun, intense, and brutal, a slasher movie times one hundred, big time. It’s huge. I’ve never seen anything like this. The kill count!” When a Master of Horror is that impressed, you know you’re onto something…Halloween Kills opens in theaters on October 15, 2021.On an Apple device?

(Photo by Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)All Fast Furious Movies RankedFrom bursting out the nose of an exploding plane, to skipping skyscraper to skyscraper, to gently guiding a bank safe across public roads and additional civil engineering, the Fast Furious franchise has made its mission delivering more outrageous action than the previous movies could ever muster.
