95299.cσm天下棋牌采用百度引擎7(Baidu 2)This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Creed III, Firestarter, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYIP MAN S DONNIE YEN JOINS JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty Images)John Wick (Certified Fresh at 86%) could have just been a very well-produced action revenge thriller, but the film s star Keanu Reeves, director Chad Stahelski, and screenwriter Derek Kolstad figured out a winning formula has has led to sequels and even a spinoff series focused on its secret world of assassins. Production on John Wick: Chapter 4 has been held back a little bit by both the COVID-19 pandemic (and scheduling conflicts with Reeves other upcoming #4 sequel, The Matrix 4, scheduled for 12/22/2021), but the pieces are finally coming together for filming to happen at locations in France, Germany, and Japan this summer. Just last week, we learned that pop star Rina Sawayama will make her acting debut in a lead role in John Wick: Chapter 4, and now we know about another big addition to the cast. Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen has recently increased his Hollywood profile with roles in films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Certified Fresh at 84%) and Disney s live-action Mulan (Certified Fresh at 72%), and next, he will co-star in John Wick: Chapter 4  as an old friend of Wick s who shares many of his experiences and enemies. John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently scheduled for May 27, 2022. Finally, in what is probably a coincidence, both Donnie Yen and Keanu Reeves have been rumored in recent years to be in consideration for the role of Marvel s Namor the Sub-Mariner, with Yen even Tweeting this audition picture. Marvel Studios has made no official Namor announcements.Other Top Headlines1. ISSA RAE JOINS INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SEQUEL AS SPIDER-WOMAN (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Some weeks reveal certain trends in development news, and this week, the theme involves stars on the upswing landing big new projects with the potential of expanding their careers. Let s start with Issa Rae, whose popular YouTube series Awkward Black Girl led to the acclaimed HBO series Insecure (Fresh at 96%), which likewise led to a supporting role in The Hate U Give (Certified Fresh at 97%) and lead roles in The Photograph (Fresh at 74%), and The Lovebirds (Fresh at 65%). Issa Rae will also provide the voice of Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman, in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%) as the sequel s first new cast member. It is not yet known if Rae might also be in the running to play the role also suspected to be Jessica Drew in the untitled female-centric Spider-Man spinoff that director Olivia Wilde is currently developing (though it s also worth noting that there have been a few different Marvel heroes all called Spider-Woman). The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is currently scheduled for release on October 7, 2022. Although Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are both confirmed to be returning, other stars like Nicolas Cage (as Spider-Man Noir) and John Mulaney (as Peter Porker/Spider-Ham) haven t yet been announced.2. DWAYNE JOHNSON AND YAHYA ABDUL-MATEEN II TEAM UP FOR EMERGENCY CONTACT (Photo by Priscilla Grant, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is not yet a household name, but his face is becoming more and more familiar following breakout roles in two DC Comics projects, first as the villain Black Manta in Aquaman (Fresh at 65%), and then as nope-we re-not-spoiling-it in HBO s Watchmen (Fresh at 96%). Roles in US and The Trial of the Chicago 7 will also soon be followed by performances in the Candyman reboot (8/27/2021), The Matrix 4 (12/22/2021), and Aquaman 2 (12/16/2022) (for which he is currently preparing). Abdul-Mateen II and Dwayne Johnson are teaming up to produce an action movie set in Austin, Texas for Warner Bros. called Emergency Contact, in which Abdul-Mateen II will also star (it s not yet known if Johnson will have a supporting role, but it sounds like he s not the film s star). The premise of Emergency Contact is being kept secret for now, except that it s a high-concept, high-octane action film set in Austin, and that the screenwriters also worked with Dwayne Johnson on his upcoming DC Comics movie Black Adam (7/29/2022).3. SAMARA WEAVING LEADS NEW ADDITIONS TO CAST OF DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Damien Chazelle, who won an Academy Award for directing La La Land (Certified Fresh at 91%), and who also directed Whiplash (Certified Fresh at 94%) and First Man (Certified Fresh at 87%), has been trying to get his movie Babylon about Hollywood in the 1920s going for a few years now (much of that delay was caused by COVID-19, obviously). Babylon is going to feature a large ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, which will now also include Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Max Mingella (The Social Network), Lukas Haas (Witness), Eric Roberts (The Pope of Greenwich Village), and rocker-turned-actor Flea of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Katherine Waterston, who co-starred with Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice, also joined Babylon in a separate announcement. Paramount Pictures has scheduled Babylon for a limited release on December 25, 2022 which will then platform to a wide release on January 6, 2023.4. ROBERT DE NIRO, ANYA TAYLOR-JOY, CHRIS ROCK, AND TAYLOR SWIFT AMONG NEW ADDITIONS TO DAVID O. RUSSELL S LATEST ENSEMBLE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Another director who is assembling an ambitious ensemble for his next project is David O. Russell, whose last film six years ago was the 2015 Miracle Mop movie Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence. We ve known for a while now that the leads in his next film will be Christian Bale and Margot Robbie, supported by John David Washington, Rami Malek, and Zoe Saldana. This week, however, the cast list sort of ballooned to include Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Chris Rock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Shannon, Anya Taylor-Joy, and pop singer Taylor Swift, in a relatively rare acting performance (Swift s first since Cats). Both the premise and the title of this film are currently being kept secret by 20th Century Studios. Having said that, past reports have described the lead characters as being a doctor and a lawyer who form an unlikely partnership. 5. JONATHAN MAJORS TO PLAY ADONIS NEXT OPPONENT IN CREED III(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Even lifelong Rocky fans probably have to admit that the franchise was seriously struggling before it was revived in 2015 with the spinoff Creed (Certified Fresh at 95%), which turned the focus towards Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky s friend Apollo, as played by Michael B. Jordan. That film was followed by Creed II (Certified Fresh at 83%), in which Creed squared off against another son of a famous boxer, Ivan Drago, who killed Apollo in Rocky IV (Rotten at 40%). We don t yet know the premise for Creed III (with which Michael B. Jordan will make his feature film directorial debut), but we do now know that Adonis new boxing opponent will be played by Jonathan Majors of HBO s Lovecraft Country. As expected, fans were quick to speculate about who Majors might play, with the most common guess being the son (or some other relative) of Clubber Lang, who was played in Rocky III (Fresh at 63%) by Mr. T, whose last major role was over 10 years ago in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Certified Fresh at 86%). It is not yet known how the recent acquisition of MGM by Amazon might impact the theatrical release of Creed III.6. TIFFANY HADDISH TO PORTRAY FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER IN NEW BIOPIC(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)The recent career of Tiffany Haddish has been so prolific and ubiquitous that it might be easy to forget that her breakout role in Girls Trip (Certified Fresh at 91%) came just four years ago in 2017. Haddish hasn t had that much time to expand into other genres besides comedy, but she is indeed taking her shot at an ambitious dramatic role that will also require (ostensibly) a good amount of physical personal training, as she is producing and will star in a biopic about the life of three-time Olympic gold medalist Florence Griffith Joyner, popularly known as Flo-Jo. Florence Griffith Joyner (who died in 1998) was an American track and field athlete who in 1988 set still-standing world records in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, and then retired less than a year later. Tiffany Haddish will also be producing a documentary series about Flo-Jo as a companion to the narrative feature.7. GLENN CLOSE JOINS TWINS-STYLE COMEDY BROTHERS(Photo by Sony Pictures Classics)A little over a year ago, The Weekly Ketchup reported Avengers: Infinity War co-stars Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage were signed to co-star in a Twins-style comedy called Brothers for director Macon Blair (I Don t Feel At Home in This World Anymore, Certified Fresh at 89%). Before we get to this week s actual news, this is a good place to remind everyone that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now so big that its list of illustrious alumni is massive. That being said, yes, Brothers is going to feature another MCU star, and that will be Glenn Close, who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (Certified Fresh at 92%) as the leader of the Nova Corps. Close s role in Brothers isn t yet known, but an obvious guess is that she could be playing the mother of the two siblings played by Brolin and Dinklage. (Collider also pointed out that Glenn Close did play the mother of Ed Helms and Owen Wilson in the similarly-titled Father Figures in 2017.)8. IT: CHAPTER TWO ALUM JOINS REBOOT OF STEPHEN KING ADAPTATION FIRESTARTER(Photo by Michael Tran/Getty Images)One of the more memorable kills in IT: Chapter Two (Fresh at 62%) is the moment when a young girl is pulled under the bleachers by Pennywise the evil clown. That girl was played by 8-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who is now 11, and she has been cast as the lead in another Stephen King adaptation, the reboot of Firestarter, which was first adapted as a 1984 movie (Rotten at 37%) starring Drew Barrymore. The announcement of Armstrong s casting came along with a set photo of Armstrong in character, wearing a jacket that looks like it might have been in or around, you know, a fire. Armstrong joins a cast that includes the already announced Zac Efron as her father (originally played by David Keith) and Michael Greyeyes as the Native American government agent assigned to befriend her (controversially played by George C. Scott in the original film). Former ER star Gloria Reuben also landed a Firestarter role this week.9. ALICIA SILVERSTONE RETURNS TO HIGH SCHOOL IN REBEL WILSON COMEDY SCHOOL YEAR(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)It has been over 25 years since the now-classic teen comedy Clueless (Certified Fresh at 81%), and the career of its star Alicia Silverstone has taken her a lot of places, including Gotham City as Batgirl (Batman Robin, Rotten at 12%). Silverstone, now 44, is signed to return to high school (sort of) in the Paramount Players high school comedy Senior Year. Rebel Wilson will star in Senior Year as a cheerleader who wakes up from a coma after 20 years to return to her high school to regain her status and claim the prom queen crown that eluded her. I think of it as a comedy with some dark threads in it. I m not real analytical. I wanted to make the first idea of it. I wanted to make a film with humor similar to a film we made years ago called Coffee and Cigarettes. It felt like the same job. That s funny because here we call it Coffee, Cigarettes, and Zombies.Jarmusch: I mean that s sort of the impetus for the whole thing so honestly that s good to hear.Tell us about the premiere at Cannes.Jarmusch: It was pretty weird, to be honest. It s like showing our film to some film people, but also like 1,500 executives from L Oréal. It s kind of strange. But that s part of Cannes. Cannes is more and more each year kind of like a convention. I wasn t in favor of it being the opening night film, but the people who financed it, and my producers, I sort of let them all vote, and said, I will defer to what you guys all think. I kind of think they wanted it because they could get our cast on the red carpet. But other than that I don t know the motives. It was interesting. I don t want to just totally dis it. It was weird for me though, I must say. But I was also happy to be there together with members of the cast and Fred Elmes, our DP, and Catherine George, our costume designer. So you know, it was a positive thing on some level. [Laughs] I guess. But that standing ovation was pretty great. Jarmusch: Yeah, it was so fun. For me, the best things I love about Cannes are I like the press conferences when you have your collaborators there and I don t know that was kind of fun. And Bill Murray during the photo call was hilarious and amazing. The Dead Don t Die opens in select theaters on June 14th.

3. 激战团竞模式
Well before there was a script for Marvel’s Avengers, it was clear Clint Barton would be a member of the team. Marvel Studios made a deal with actor Jeremy Renner in advance of the film and he made his debut in Thor as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with a singular talent for archery. More details about him would have to wait, though, for Avengers: Age of Ultron, as the first film was already stuffed with story threads from the other heroes films. Nevertheless, Renner bided his time as a Marvel guest character, knowing a starring role would eventually materialize.Meanwhile, back in the Marvel Comics universe, Clint was enjoying a new inrush of fans as he starred in a Hawkeye series from writer Matt Fraction and principal artist David Aja. The stylish, indie-tinged series set out to reveal what Clint does when he’s not with the Avengers. The answer, as it turned out, was as eventful as any mission with the team. He inherited a building, had to save it from a crime family with a love of tracksuits, adopted a dog, and worked with Young Avengers Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, to survive the impossibility of existence and drink coffee. These two strands of Hawkeye’s existence are about to collide in Disney+’s upcoming Hawkeye series. As the recently uploaded trailer for the program reveals, Renner’s version of Clint will be meeting foes (and allies) in a tale Disney and Marvel are positioning as the feel-good superhero action series of the holidays. So let’s take a look at what we know about the series so far and determine just how much more like Hawkeye Clint can get.Clint’s Weird Holiday(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Based on the trailer, it’s clear the story will be set during the 2023 holidays, a handful of months after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Clint brings his children to New York for this special trip because, as he puts it, he’s “making up for lost time.” So, clearly, both he and the kids are still adjusting to the reality of the Blip and the five years Thanos (Josh Brolin) stole from them. But soon, Clint learns someone else has become Ronin, the costumed persona he adopted during those five years of darkness. As glimpsed in Endgame, Ronin was a ruthless and relentless scourge to the criminal underworld. His campaign was so intense, in fact, that few of the surviving Avengers believed Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) could bring him in from the cold. And, clearly, some of that past will catch up with him even if the person in the Ronin costume is Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), the self-professed world’s greatest archer. Of course, she has problems of her own – otherwise, why dress up as Ronin in the first place? Based on the Young Avengers and Hawkeye comics, we expect some of those problems will be very close to home. Also, according to comments made by Renner and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige ahead of the show s production, Clint will mentor Kate in some capacity. The meeting of Hawkeyes, meanwhile, will lead to plenty of action, some silliness, and (we hope) the best look at Clint’s life outside of Avenging yet seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.A Return To Old New York(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Of course, no Hawkeye series based on the Fraction and Aja comic book would be complete without New York and the trailer makes it clear most of the series will stick to the five boroughs. For close watchers of the MCU’s ever-evolving landscape, getting a look at the city ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home will be of particular importance. For one thing, there will be Easter eggs like the Rogers musical on Broadway, but we imagine the series will also contain a few echoes to Endgame’s nearly deserted New York and offer some details about how that desolate New York reshaped itself into the one glimpsed in The Falcon and the Winter Solider and Spider-Man: Far From Home. As it happens, there is room here to make pointed references to The Daily Bugle and the Global Repatriation Council. Also, the glimpses of Manhattan in the Hawkeye trailer sure remind us of the same island featured in the Netflix Marvel shows. Hope springs eternal that it may mean the return of a Wilson Fisk or Jessica Jones – even if just as mentioned characters somewhere along the way. Of course, only rumors suggest such a thing occurring.A True Cast Of Characters(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)As mentioned earlier, Renner returns as Clint. Or, more specifically, the MCU version of Clint. He differs from the comic book character in a couple of key ways. For one, MCU Clint is a devoted husband and father. Back in the comics, Clint’s love life is the butt of many, many jokes as he’s romanced a number of women over the years (even married at least one person), but always screws up his relationships. And as for kids, well, there is an unfortunate story there, but the Clint of the Fraction and Aja comics was in no place to be a father.Curiously though, the trailer hints at MCU Clint accruing some of the comic book character’s energy during the five years his family ceased to exist. We also expect Clint to reckon with being a remorseless killer for much of that time and discover what it means to reintegrate into a family who experienced none of the turmoil during the Blip.Joining him on this adventure is Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. It remains to be seen how she will differ from her comic book counterpart, but we will say this: she is Hawkeye. Like comic book Clint, things never quite go her way even though she is a more successful at adulting. And thanks to a story written by Fraction and drawn by Annie Wu – and expanded upon in a subsequent series by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero – Kate has a wonderful, down-on-her-luck private detective vibe. And with Steinfeld in the part, she might be the most significant addition to the MCU roster from the Disney+ programs so far. Although, we freely admit we may be biased.(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)The series will also feature Vera Farmiga as Kate’s mother Eleanor – a key clue into Kate’s story as her mother is quite significant in her comic book storylines Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez (the deaf assassin known as Echo); Fra Fee as the mercenary Kazi; Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, a man with key ties to Clint s past; Zahn McClarnon as Maya’s father William Lopez; and Brian d Arcy James in an undisclosed role. Ava Russo, Ben Sakamoto, and Cade Woodward also return as Clint’s children. And perhaps most importantly, a golden retriever named Jolt takes on the iconic role of Lucky the Pizza Dog. Hopes are already riding high that an episode will adapt the issue of Hawkeye which is seen from Lucky’s point of view. Also, Florence Pugh is expected to turn up at some point as Yelena Belova. If you recall her final scene in Black Widow, Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) points her in Clint’s direction as the person most responsible for Natasha’s death. We expect that confrontation will be crucial to the story and, hopefully, lead to at least one reveal about the Contessa’s plans.Behind The Bows(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Hawkeye’s head writer is Jonathan Igla, a veteran of Bridgerton and Sorry for Your Loss. Other writer’s include Katie Mathewson and Tanner Bean. On the directing side, episodes will be helmed by Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood (who go by the directing name Bert and Bertie) and Comrade Detective’s Rhys Thomas, a group of talent who suggest Hawkeye will be one of the lighter Marvel shows, which is in keeping with the Fraction-written comic book. The source material still hit on some serious topics, though, and saw Clint’s hearing loss take on a new prominence. Set photos from the series suggest MCU Clint will lose some of his hearing during the program, and a few shots from the trailer reveal what appears to be a hearing aid in Clint s ear.Filming took place in New York and Georgia across the 2020 holiday and into Spring of 2021. Photos of Steinfeld in costume circulated widely one week before Marvel confirmed her involvement in the program. Subsequent pictures also confirmed Fraction’s Tracksuit Mafia, so expect the utterance “bro” to get stuck in your head.Taking Aim In NovemberThe six-episode series debuts November 24 on Disney+ with episodes streaming weekly through December 29. And as it is part of Marvel Studios second TV show round, it is unclear if the program will continue for a second season, but we can easily imagine Kate moving to the West Coast and becoming a P.I. in Season 2.On an Apple device? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)It was no secret that The Abomination/Emil Blonsky would be re-entering the MCU in phase 4; during last December s Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that the villain, first portrayed by Tim Roth in The Incredible Hulk, would be a part of upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk. Roth further confirmed the news. But it turns out we will see The Abomination even sooner than that – and we just got the confirmation from Feige himself.Check out: Kevin Feige s Oral History of the MCU s First Three PhasesWhen the studio dropped its trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings last Friday, keen-eyed fans noticed that the character – or a creature that looked almost exactly like him, with a few improvements like those larger fins along his spine – appeared in the last few seconds, fighting in what looks to be an underground tournament. His adversary? Well, it looked more than a little like Wong (Benedict Wong), the sorcerer first introduced in Doctor Strange. But Wong, the actor, was not officially credited in the Shang-Chi cast list (though a lunch in Sydney between the star and Shang-Chi lead Simu Liu had raised some suspicions).Rotten Tomatoes sat down with Feige this week for an extended look at Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the full video of which will be available shortly in the lead-up to Black Widow s release. When we asked for confirmation that we had indeed seen The Abomination squaring off against Wong in the closing moments of the Shang-Chi trailer, Feige revealed that our eyes were not deceiving us. Yes, we just recently released the final trailer for Shang-Chi, said Feige. Some fans said, This looks like a character they hadn t seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong. Feige went on to say that the ability to bring back characters like The Abomination is one of the joys of his work on the MCU. [It s] a fun thing to have a character that we haven t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU. And to see fans on that little tag of the trailer recognize that and embrace that is great fun. (Photo by Jasin Boland, © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Shang-Chi also affords Marvel Studios a second go, of sorts, at another storied villain: The Mandarin. In the comics, the character, which was teased in Iron Man 3 but who, in that film, turned out to be bumbling actor-for-hire Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) – much to some fans chagrin – is the founder of the Ten Rings, and the Ten Rings will make a proper debut in the upcoming solo film. That s what s fun about the MCU at this stage, Feige told Rotten Tomatoes.  We can do something like Shang-Chi, introducing a brand new hero into the MCU and into the world at large. But that subtitle, The Legend of the Ten Rings, actually connects it back to the very beginning of the MCU, the Ten Rings being the organization that kidnapped Tony Stark at the very beginning of Iron Man one. And that organization was inspired by a character called the Mandarin in the comics. And going back to Iron Man one: We ve been talking about that when we do bring this character to the screen, [we] only wanted to do it when we felt we could do it supreme justice and really showcase the complexity of this character, which frankly we couldn t do in an Iron Man movie because an Iron Man movie is about Iron Man; an Iron Man movie is about Tony Stark. So [Iron Man 3 director] Shane Black, in his film and his script that he co-wrote, came up with this fun twist that we love to this day, and it turned out to be Trevor Slattery. Just because that version wasn t real didn t mean there s not a leader of the Ten Rings organization, and that is who we meet for the first time in Shang-Chi. Joel MearesFeige says he is particularly excited to have cast Hong Kong acting legend Tony Leung Chiu-wai in the role. Tony Leung playing Shang-Chi s father and the leader of the Ten Rings is another pinch-yourself, dream-come-true moment because he s one of the best actors of our time and we re very excited to have him introduced to, I hope, a whole new fan base who might not be aware of his spectacular work that he s done. Check in with Rotten Tomatoes for our full extended video interview with Kevin Feige previewing Phase 4 of the MCU. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters September 3, 2021. She-Hulk is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2022. Thumbnail image: © Marvel Studios and © UniversalOn an Apple device? 9.95.2 3月喜迎Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens arrives this weekend, bringing both heaven and hell with it. Based on 1990 novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the Amazon Prime limited series tells the story of agents of God and Satan who want to stop the Apocalypse — simply because it sounds like a terrible idea. Fortunately, it seems like the reluctant Antichrist has similar inclinations.Michael Sheen (The Queen) plays angel Aziraphale, and David Tennant (Broadchurch) is demon Crowley. The two first met when Crowley turned into a snake and slipped past Aziraphale into the Garden of Eden to tempt Eve. Theirs has been a fine bromance ever since.Rotten Tomatoes met up with the stars, Gaiman, director Douglas MacKinnon (Doctor Who), and, representing Terry Pratchett’s estate, executive producer Rob Wilkins, ahead of the series’ London premiere to find out just what makes the Amazon Studios and BBC Studios co-production Good Omens such a delicious binge-watching option.1. A Monty Python NonsensibilityStarting out the gate with the credit sequence, the series pays homage to Monty Python. But while in sketch series Monty Python s Flying Circus, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, Agnus Nutter actually does expect the Spanish Inquisition when her time of judgment arrives.2. The Celestial Bromance at Its Core(Photo by Amazon Studios)Aziraphale and Crowley build their lovingly adversarial relationship one historical clash after another – including, during another nod to Monty Python, when Crowley turns up as the Black Knight. Sketches of Aziraphale and Crowley’s bond strengthening over the ages are pure joy and recommend further adventures of the collegial duo. And Welsh actor Sheen and Scottish actor Tennant spark onscreen in a way that critics have hailed.“Most of the show s charm hinges on the unlikely camaraderie between an Angel and a Demon, played, with considerable gusto, by Michael Sheen and David Tennant,” CNN’s Brian Lowry wrote.New York Magazine’s Keith Phipps wrote, “Good Omens can work only with the right leads, so cheers to bringing in Sheen and Tennant, two actors who know how to make a three-course meal out of understated dialogue and cosmic absurdity.”And, from Allison Shoemaker of RogerEbert.com: “Together, it s like watching two musicians at the top of their game play a duet; they positively sing.”In a press conference before meeting with reporters, Tennant explained the relationship further.“They re not particularly good representatives of their respective head offices. They ve rubbed off on each other, so much, that Crowley s not that mean anymore, and Aziraphale s not that holy,” he said. “So, between them, they ve reached a common ground, and they ve become each other s, sort of, significant other, really They ve only got each other to rely on, and they ve become — although they would deny it until the end of time, quite literally, they re sort of each other s yin and yang … But, it s only when you see what head office is like — for instance, when the angel, Gabriel, appears — that you realize how humanized they ve become by the mortal world, that they really like, quite a lot because it s got wine.”3. The Obscene Wealth of Talent(Photo by Scott Garfitt/BACKGRID)Sheen and Tennant are just the start. The rest of the cast fills out with an enviable assemblage of talent for serialized entertainment:Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Archangel Gabriel, who leads the angelic hostAnna Maxwell Martin (The Bletchley Circle) as Beelzebub, leader of the forces of HellJosie Lawrence (Enchanted April) as 17th-century witch Agnes Nutter, who produces the only accurate book of prophecies ever writtenAdria Arjona (True Detective) as Anathema Device, a witch and Agnes Nutter’s descendantMiranda Richardson (Harry Potter franchise) as part-time medium and prostitute Madame TracyMichael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap) as Witchfinder Sergeant ShadwellFrances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) voices GodBenedict Cumberbatch (The Hobbit film franchise) voices SatanSam Taylor Buck as reluctant Antichrist Adam YoungThe series, a coproduction of Amazon Studios and BBC Studios, is directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who) and also features Jack Whitehall, Mireille Enos, Brian Cox, Nick Offerman, Ned Dennehy, Ariyon Bakare, Nina Sosanya, Steve Pemberton, and Mark Gatiss.4. Expertly Drawn Characters(Photo by Amazon Studios)The series’ stars raved about bringing Gaiman and Pratchett’s characters to life.“Nothing is odd about this character; I think she s entirely relatable. Particularly, the channeling of many, many souls, alive and dead, and riding a motorbike, in a cape, with a former member of Spinal Tap. It s just part of the day job, really,” Richardson related in a press conference before breaking off to meet with reporters. “It feels like my element. I love it. Transformation and costume and inhabiting of other, but at the same time, the character is, all the characters are, incredibly humane. I just I love that about this project. That s what comes across, I think. And what will book fans think, especially given changes like Archangel Gabriel’s expanded role?“I think had we gone into this project without Neil,” Hamm said, “there would have been a different reaction, but because Neil was involved from the get-go and was so involved during the process of making it, it became like a version 2.0. So I think the fan base was jazzed, they were like, Oh my God, we re getting more, we re almost getting a sequel or something, we re getting the extended version, the EP. … We were at New York Comic Con and there were 5,000 people that showed up for a panel discussion. It was bonkers. It was like a rock concert. It didn t hurt that we had Doctor Who on stage. It was still pretty cool and that was when I was like, Oh yeah there are way more people that are just as excited about this as I am. Worldwide, it s been published in 70 languages.”5. A Story With Heart(Photo by Mike Marsland/WireImage)Good Omens has a lot of heart. That’s baked into the series by Gaiman, the stars attest.“The writing is absolutely promoting humanity,” Richardson said. “You know, it s very affirmative and optimistic, really, isn t it?”“[Neil is] very centered,” she continued. “He knows what he thinks about everything. That doesn t mean he s not open. He is completely open. So you ask him a question, and it s really considered. It s not, You don t need to worry about that. It s this is just what s happened, or I think you should try that, or whatever it is. You know, everything is very considered. It s great.”Lawrence: “He has time for you, which is wonderful.”Richardson: “Like having Daddy on set.”Lawrence: “Yes, it is, or a beautiful angel.”Hamm also noted that Gaiman brings something different to the process of creating a series.“What Neil really brings to everything he does is the capacity for storytelling,” Hamm said, “and that s first and foremost. Also I think some people in the more traditional Hollywood aspect, they re trying to make money. They re making product, whether it s a Marvel movie or what have you franchise, they re not necessarily concerned with storytelling. They re concerned with IP, or what s it going to be on the second weekend or what s the third movie going to be at franchise – Neil just wants to tell a story. That s how he s created this career that s been so wide-ranging, and I think you re going to see a lot more Neil Gaiman stuff get filmed because the stories are so compelling.”6. The Antichrist Has Never Been More EnchantingAntichrist Adam Young has the wide-eyed English-schoolboy charm of classic heroes like Mark Lester’s 1968 Oliver or any number of Nicholas Nicklebys throughout the cinematic age – until, of course, the boy inherits his powers. Aziraphale and Crowley’s attempts to manage the situation are akin to trying to stop a tornado with a butterfly net — a magical butterfly net, but still.7. Evolved Female Characters(Photo by Scott Garfitt/BACKGRID)Though Good Omens’ main characters, Aziraphale and Crowley, are male, we find engaging and richly drawn women among the secondary stars of the series. Anathema spends most of her time chasing a McGuffin, but in the end contributes greatly to the stop-the-Apocalypse cause.“There s a big difference between a tough female character and a strong female character and Anathema s strong, she s very in her essence,” Arjona said. “She s a woman and she s sure of herself and so unsure of what she s doing and messes up, and she s flawed and she doesn t get it right all the time — sometimes she does — and she has this guy that s following her and never falls into romance. She’s like, ‘I gotta do what I gotta do — maybe after babe. I ll catch you later.’ She s doing her own thing and I love that about her, and I wish a lot of other characters would be like that because relatable to me, and I see my friends and the way they deal with their careers and their own life, and it s very similar to Anathema.”Richardson’s Madame Tracy is a very rich character, who, despite her own flaws, endures a level of verbal abuse and emotional sabotage from Shadwell.“Madame Tracy has her own strengths. She, in some ways, feels a bit retro. I mean, her part is retro, and the fact that she s making a living in the way she is, is a bit retro. But at the same time she s providing an incredible help in the community, and she s also very supportive, and she s trying to be a little bit life-enhancing … so there are those feminine traits, things showing. She takes care of Shadwell, and she looks out for people. It s rather lovely, but she s her own woman.”Good Omens sets out to prove a love bond between the prostitute and the Witchfinder, but where she definitely shuts the door on the risk of her infidelity, his name-calling promises to continue.“I know it is a bit questionable,” Richardson said, “but maybe it s, pardon the pun, better the devil you know. I don t know, you know? She s practical.”8. Unique Artistry(Photo by Amazon)The production design, effects, and costuming on the series lend a distinctive voice to the characters’ surroundings. Several of the actors noted that the costumes and unique environments helped them fully inhabit their characters.“There s an opportunity to sort of portray this guy as the boss that everyone has, that everyone hates, who s constantly smiling and telling you, ‘Great job,’ while also subconsciously saying, ‘You re terrible,’” Hamm related. “And, I ve worked for that guy before, and I ve hated him, and it was kind of fun to play. Just like, ‘Everything you re doing is wrong. Keep going.’ And, I got to wear so much cashmere in this, that it was A: warm, B: soft, C: comfy. But yeah, there was a lot to recommend for being on the heavenly side of thing, from a fabric point of view.”Arjona similarly credited the series’ style choices for aiding her performance: “I just tried on her boots and something happened, and I got really lucky because I didn t have to do much work after I tried on her boots.”9. An Uncompromised Creative Vision(Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images)With Good Omens, Gaiman sought to fulfill a deathbed wish of his collaborator on the book, Terry Pratchett, and so, dug in his heels.“Being the writer was relatively pleasant and entirely stress-free in that nobody was really waiting for this. I wrote it, I promised Terry I would write it, I wrote it, did the adaptation, divided the book into six, every 50 pages: OK, that s episode one, that s episode two. Fair enough, I ll write a mini movie through time that will kick off episode three. That was all simple and very stress free,” Gaiman said.“The problem is that I d promised Terry Pratchett that I would make a TV show that he would want to watch, and I d learned through my previous outings in television — some of which have been incredibly successful and some of which hadn t — that the measure of which were successful and which weren t were not the quality of the script to begin with; it was what actually wound up on the screen at the end. And I thought, OK, I have to be in a place where I can control that, where I have a director who I can work with who we share a vision with, where I can cast the people who I see in my head, where I m there just making sure that a producer who — producers don t understand scripts. I wish they did, but they don t —”MacKinnon: “Some of them do.”“Some of them do,” Gaiman conceded. “A lot of the time, what a producer will do when they go, ‘OK, we have X amount of money. We have this in the script and here is a sequence that is both expensive and if we lose it, we ll save a day of filming and nobody s going to notice if that scene is gone,’ completely failing to understand that if they pull that scene out, nothing that follows it will actually make any more sense. This is something producers have been doing since the dawn of time.“To make this thing for Terry, what I had to do was be in a place where I could just say no when somebody said, ‘So, we think we re going to lose Shakespeare s Globe.’ I go, ‘Yeah, no we re not.’ Sometimes I would come back with, ‘I ll tell you what. If we need to save that money, we can lose this scene after that you really like but that actually doesn t change anything. It can go.’”It’s the only instance of anyone tied to Good Omens who we’ve spoken to describing Gaiman’s behavior on the production as anything other than “lovely.”10. Heavenly Irreverence(Photo by Amazon Studios)Both Sheen and Tennant aren’t strangers to supernatural beings; Sheen appeared as Head Lycan in Charge Lucian in the Underworld vampires-versus-werewolves film franchise, then as The Twilight Saga vampire Aro. Tennant, meanwhile, not only played the titular extraterrestrial in Doctor Who for three seasons and in specials as the tenth Doctor, whose abilities were anything but earthly, but also turned up as witch and Voldemort loyalist Barty Crouch, Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The actors appear to take on these heavenly creatures with ease and a sort of glee.“All those characters like vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, they get reinvented — don t they? — by each generation, because they come to represent different things for each generation,” Sheen said. “And also budgets have changed. There s a lot more money to make stuff that can really use those sort of effects quite well. But in terms of Heaven and Hell and angels and demons — the end of time s and apocalypse is a whole other thing, I suppose — we re starting to think about slightly differently. I think the angels and demons thing and Heaven and Hell is always partly about going, well you have these two extremes and real life is about somehow being in the middle somewhere and being in the gray area and that s certainly what, I think, Good Omens is about.”There’s a good chance that Good Omens will ruffle some feathers, but Gaiman isn’t worried.“One of the things that I made a call writing literally page one, which was, I thought, Well, it could be Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and they re not going to be white. So, in the first five minutes, you re going to have to deal with the voice of God and she s a woman and she s Frances McDormand, and you re going to have to deal with a non-white Adam and Eve. That s your first five minutes. You can stop watching now. If you were upset or offended, great excuse to stop watching now. You will probably be much more offended by things later on like an 11-year-old Antichrist who is actually a good kid … But look, that was there for you: You had a five-minute warning — [Good Omens] actually starts with the word ‘warning.’”Good Omens debuts on Friday, May 31 on Amazon Prime.Like this? 一方面,西山居着力用重制版、缘起等涵盖新技术、新画面表现的版本去为《剑网三》“续命”。另一方面,西山居也试图基于IP体系内去拓展出一些新内容,譬如《指尖江湖》这种涵盖新玩法的手游产品。在这种难以直接“去剑网三”的大背景下,我倒认为《谢云流传》有机会成为一款破局之作。
Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. So, this week and next, we re going to review 12 of the year s top stories, presented to you in monthly chronology. The year-in-review begins with the Fresh Developments which here also serve (mostly) as the Top Stories of the year.JANUARY: BLACK WIDOW MOVIE FINALLY ANNOUNCED(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios hasn t had a big slate announcement since 2014, and we didn t get one in 2018 either, but project-by-project, this may have been the biggest such year since. It started in January with confirmation that a solo Black Widow was now, finally, in development. Black Widow continued to receive a steady stream of news stories, as the director shortlist started at 60 in May, was narrowed in June to just three, and led up to Australian director Cate Shortland landing the job in July. We also learned in October that Scarlett Johansson will receive a million pay equity with her male co-stars for Black Widow, in the same week that Black Panther 2 moved forward in development. Other Marvel Studios movies that made the news this year included Ms. Marvel (A.K.A. Kamala Khan), The Eternals, and earlier in December, both Doctor Strange 2, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu.  FEBRUARY: GAME OF THRONES SHOWRUNNERS GET THEIR OWN STAR WARS PROJECTS (Photo by Steve Granitz/Getty Images)Just a few months after the November, 2017 news that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was developing a new Star Wars trilogy (after next year s Star Wars: Episode IX), we learned about another set in February. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of HBO s popular Game of Thrones, are now writing and producing at least one film, a trilogy, or several films in the Star Wars universe, though the nature of their project has yet to be confirmed. Having said that, the popular rumor as of this writing suggests movies based on the popular Knights of the Old Republic setting, which is best known for inspiring a series of video games. Something that we didn t know in February (and Lucasfilm and Disney probably didn t know this either) was that Solo: A Star Wars Story would turn out to be a box office disappointment, prompting Disney to slow down or outright cancel most of their prequel spinoff Star Wars Story projects. That development presumably puts the new Rian Johnson and Benioff/Weiss projects even closer to production than they have otherwise been.MARCH: AVA DUVERNAY INVOKES DC COMICS THE NEW GODS (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Paramount Pictures)In late 2017, director Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) revealed on Twitter that her favorite superhero was Big Barda of DC’s New Gods, a comic created by former Marvel artist and Stan Lee collaborator Jack Kirby. In March, we learned that she may have been teasing talks that she had either started or was considering having, because DuVernay is now developing a New Gods movie. Warner Bros. attempted to develop an animated New Gods movie back in the late 1990s, and though the project was never realized, it now looks like it’ll happen after all, and the studio has brought DuVernay on board to direct it. No screenwriter has been named yet, but Warner Bros. will obviously be making that next hiring a priority. This piece suggests why Ava Duvernay is potentially a great choice for The New Gods, and this one explains who some of these characters are, exactly.APRIL: A BIG YEAR FOR STEVEN SPIELBERG: BLACKHAWK, INDIANA JONES 5, WEST SIDE STORY, THE COLOR PURPLE(Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Director Steven Spielberg had a huge year in announcements, partly buoyed by the Certified Fresh release of Ready Player One in March. It actually started off in January with confirmation of his (previously already talked about) plans for Indiana Jones 5 and his remake of West Side Story. The first big new project this year, though, came in April, when Spielberg started development at Warner Bros. of a Blackhawk movie, based on the long-running comic about a squad of World War II pilot-adventurers. West Side Story also had a few big casting announcements this year, including Ansel Elgort as Tony, and original West Side Story star Rita Moreno, not as Anita, but as a reimagined take on neighborhood shopkeeper Doc. We also found out last month that Steven Spielberg is partnering with Oprah Winfrey on a musical remake of The Color Purple.MAY: ANNABELLE: CREATION AND HAPPY DEATH DAY SEQUELS ANNOUNCED(Photo by New Line Cinema)Superhero movies (like Avengers: Infinity War and Aquaman) are obviously crushing it right now at the box office, but they also tend to have pretty big budgets. Horror films do well, too, and they re a lot cheaper to produce. One such example is New Line Cinema s The Conjuring franchise, which includes the creepy doll spinoff Annabelle and its prequel Annabelle: Creation. The Conjuring 3 doesn t come out until 2020 (9/11/2020), but we learned in May that Annabelle 3 (7/3/2019) was likely to beat it to release. The Blumhouse horror production company also quickly moved forward with plans for Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to last year s 3 million Groundhog Day-like hit. We also learned in October that the Warrens (based on the real paranormal investigators) will be joining one of the non-Conjuring films in the franchise for the first time, as Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles in the third Annabelle movie.JUNE: THIS YEAR IN STEPHEN KING: DOCTOR SLEEP, FIRESTARTER, AND THE CASTING OF IT CHAPTER TWO(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection, Warner Bros.)Although 2017 was obviously not a great year for The Dark Tower (Rotten at 16%), the success of the other major Stephen King movie last year drastically offset it. IT was both Certified Fresh at 85% and a tremendous box office hit, earning 0+ million worldwide from a budget of just million. This made Stephen King- sourced projects hot properties again, especially if they re remakes (like Pet Sematary, 4/5/2019), or otherwise related to a pre-existing horror classic. That otherwise leads us to Doctor Sleep, the 2013 novel by King that serves as a sequel to The Shining because it focuses on the adult Danny Torrance. That role went to Ewan McGregor, with King himself reportedly having given his blessing to the choice for the sequel, which will be directed by Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald s Game). Also in June, we learned that Universal Pictures is remaking Stephen King s Firestarter, with the directing job going to Turkish-German director Fatih Akin (Goodbye Berlin, Soul Kitchen), with Blumhouse also co-producing. Finally, there s IT: Chapter Two (9/6/19), and this week, we saw our first images from the set. 2018 was a big year for IT: Chapter Two (9/6/2019) casting news, including the confirmation of Jessica Chastain in February, and the news in April that James McAvoy (Split, X-Men: First Class) and Saturday Night Live alumnus Bill Hader had been cast in lead roles (as Bill and Richie, respectively).JULY: STAR-STUDDED LITTLE WOMEN REMAKE TO BE GRETA GERWIG S NEXT(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One of the biggest stories coming out of last year s awards season was the underdog success of actress-turned-director Greta Gerwig s semi-autobiographical Lady Bird (Certified Fresh at 99%) starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet (whose Call Me By Your Name also did well). For her next film, Gerwig is turning to classic literature, in the form of Little Women. Gerwig also attracted some major star power for her version, including Ronan and Chalamet, as well as Meryl Streep. Emma Stone was initially cast as Meg, but dropped out to allow her time to promote The Favourite, so the role went to another Emma, Emma Watson. In August, Jurassic Park and Blue Velvet star Laura Dern also signed on. Little Women is now scheduled for release in just under a year, on Christmas Day, 2019 (up against Call of the Wild, the World War I drama 1917, and Melissa McCarthy s Super Intelligence).AUGUST: SHHH . JOHN KRASINSKI IS NOW WRITING A QUIET PLACE 2 FOR 2020(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)In late August, Paramount Pictures announced A Quiet Place 2 (title pending) for release on May 15, 2020, which currently puts it up against Warner Bros Scooby reboot and a week before another monster movie, Godzilla vs Kong (also from Warner Bros). Almost immediately, it was clear that Paramount was going to want to return to the first film s premise (about monsters that are super sensitive to sound), given that it made over 2 million from a million budget. John Krasinski gave an update in October, stating that after initially telling Paramount to hire someone else, he is now actively working on writing the sequel. It s not yet known if Krasinski and his wife Emily Blunt will also be returning to star in the sequel. Emily Blunt is following up Mary Poppins Returns with another film for Disney, their attraction adaptation Jungle Cruise, which is scheduled for release on July 24, 2020.SEPTEMBER: HENRY CAVILL LIKELY OUT AS SUPERMAN, SIGNALING BIG DCEU CHANGES(Photo by Clay Enos/Warner Bros.)The DCEU (DC Extended Universe) hit a major snag in September with the news that Henry Cavill is most likely done playing Superman. Instead, the focus in the Superman Family will be on his cousin, Supergirl, whom we learned in August  is getting her own movie. The talks with Cavill reportedly broke down over a Superman cameo in next year s Shazam! (4/5/2019). Warner Bros. upcoming DC Comics projects also include Joaquin Phoenix s Joker (10/4/2019), Margot Robbie s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) (2/7/2020), and Gal Gadot s Wonder Woman 1984 (6/5/2020). Many pieces went online speculating about the future of DC Comics movies. Even without Superman on his slate anymore, Henry Cavill is expected to be keeping very busy anyway, as he also signed with Netflix this year to star in their video game adaptation series The Witcher.OCTOBER: JAMES GUNN SWITCHES SIDES FOR DC COMICS SUICIDE SQUAD SEQUEL(Photo by Marvel Studios)One of the most shocking stories in recent memory came in July when Disney fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 over a number of questionable tweets from before his original hiring for 2014 s Guardians of the Galaxy. In October, we learned that that Gunn is now signed to write, and possibly direct the sequel to DC Comics Suicide Squad. Gunn is supposedly working on a completely new take, which suggests it could even be a reboot instead of a true sequel to the first film. One reason to believe that is that, in the past, Gunn has tweeted negatively about Jared Leto, suggesting that he may not be in a hurry to recast Leto as Joker in James Gunn s Suicide Squad.NOVEMBER: GUILLERMO DEL TORO REVEALS OVER 15 BIG MOVIES READY TO GO(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Long before Guillermo del Toro won the Academy Award for Best Picture this year for The Shape of Water, it was well known that he had a long list of shelved movies in his past. That little golden man on his mantle has changed a lot for GDT, including his new deal at Fox Searchlight that basically set him up with his own mini-studio for horror/genre films. In November, del Toro took to Twitter to list over 15 unproduced screenplays that he has completely finished, which are basically ready to go projects for any studio that wants to work with him to get them produced. (You can read a summary of that list in our coverage last month right here.) Del Toro also made the news in August for producing Scary Movies to Tell in the Dark, and in October for landing his Pinocchio at Netflix.DECEMBER: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SUCCESS INSPIRES SPINOFFS AND SEQUELS (Photo by Sony Pictures Animation)After just two weeks in release, Sony s innovative animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%) has already earned nearly 0 million globally. The film was always part of Sony s ambitious plans for its Marvel properties, and last week, we leaned a lot more about possible future films. Development had already reportedly begun in November on both a sequel and a spinoff of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The animated sequel will focus on the romance between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, which will then lead into the spinoff Spider-Women, featuring Gwen, Silk, and the original Spider-Woman (in the comics), Jessica Drew. These two animated films join a growing slate of Marvel movies at Sony that also includes Venom 2, Morbius (AKA The Living Vampire), Black Cat, Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter, Jackpot, Nightwatch, and Silk.
ry, as George Lucas would once again journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. There was no question that this would be the movie event of the —Hold up. Before a single podracer would fire up that May, a little oddity dropped on March 31. It was too early to be a summer movie, too late to be a holiday movie – clearly no one knew what to do with this dystopian sci-fi action flick that was part Blade Runner, part anime, and part Intro to Existentialist Philosophy 101 (and it starred the dude from Point Break?) It was The Matrix, and it would explode like a neutron bomb, stealing little Anakin Skywalker’s thunder on its way to becoming the movie of 1999, a genre-bending instant classic with a powerfully iconic style that is still recognizable (and mimicked) today. It would be followed up by two mega-sequels in 2003 – The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions – that wouldn’t reach the heights of the original, but opened up a vast and intricate world that fans still obsess over. Now, 18 years and several animated shorts and MMORPGs later, Neo and Trinity are back in The Matrix Resurrections. With the release of the first official trailer, here’s what we know about our imminent future…Only One of the Wachowskis Is Returning to Direct(Photo by Timothy Hiatt/Getty Images)Ever since their 1996 directorial debut, Bound, Lana and Lilly Wachowski have been a double act. The siblings not only co-directed the entire original Matrix trilogy, but also Speed Racer, Jupiter Ascending, and Cloud Atlas (they also co-produced V for Vendetta and created the Netflix series Sense8). However, Matrix Resurrections will see Lana fly solo behind the camera for the first time. At this year’s CinemaCon, Lilly cited exhaustion from multiple projects, her transition, and the death of their parents for sapping her creative energy. I got out of my transition and was just completely exhausted because we had made Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending, and the first season of Sense8 back-to-back-to-back,” said Lilly. “We were posting one and prepping the other at the exact same time. So you re talking about three 100-plus days of shooting for each project, and so, coming out and just being completely exhausted, my world was like, falling apart to some extent even while I was like, you know, cracking out of my egg. So I needed this time away from this industry. I needed to reconnect with myself as an artist and I did that by going back to school and painting and stuff. Neo and Trinity Are Back(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures) Despite the minor complication that Neo and Trinity both die in Revolutions, original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are returning for the fourth go-round (here’s a hint: The movie is called RESURRECTIONS). It’s also been reported that Jada Pinkett Smith will be reprising her role as Niobe, a Zion rebel and hovercraft captain, and Lambert Wilson will be returning as mysterious computer-based crime lord The Merovingian (though neither show up in the trailer). Notably absent are original stars Laurence Fishburne (who played Neo’s mentor, Morpheus) and Hugo Weaving (who played the villainous Agent Smith, a security program that eventually goes rogue). Weaving was actually interested in coming back, but scheduling conflicts made it impossible. As for Fishburne, there may be more behind the decision to not have him return…Is That Young Morpheus ?(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)One of the reasons Fishburne may not be back is that Morpheus as we know him is gone. In fact, the character is killed during the Matrix Online – an MMORPG that ran from 2005-2009 and is considered canon. Candyman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is rumored to be playing either a young version of Morpheus (perhaps beaming in from another timeline to alter the future) or simply Morpheus with a newer, younger look. Note that in the trailer, Abdul-Mateen is clearly wearing very “Morpheus”-like pince-nez sunglasses, and there s a call-back to the dojo fights between Neo and Morpheus in the first film. Also, on the website WhatisTheMatrix.com, there were quick teaser shots of what looked to be computers “creating” Abdul-Mateen out of nothing – so maybe he’s not what he seems at all, even if Abdul-Mateen himself took to Instagram seemingly to confirm what everyone was thinking.

Promises (2008) and Captain Fantastic (2017)Rami Malek: Bohemian Rhapsody – No prior nominationsStatistically speaking, the prior nominees without wins (Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Viggo Mortensen) and the lone first-timer (Rami Malek) have a better chance of winning than Oscar winner Christian Bale. Prior nominees without wins and first-time nominees have won 15 of the last 18 Oscars, with first-time winners Matthew McConaughey, Eddie Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio, Casey Affleck, and Gary Oldman winning in the last five years. The even distribution of nominations and awards to first-timers and prior nominees has forced us to dig deep to find an advantage between prior nominees (without wins) and those with zero Oscar love. The Academy has awarded 10 of the last 18 Oscars to actors playing real-life characters (more than any category this century). The reason we’re bringing this up is that 4 of the 5 nominees this year played real-life characters – in Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody, At Eternity’s Gate, and Green Book. Right now, Malek seems like the statistical frontrunner because six of the seven first-time nominated winners since 2001 have played real-life characters (Jamie Foxx, Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Matthew McConaughey, Eddie Redmayne).Who has the advantage? The competition is fierce, but we think Rami Malek has the advantage because the Academy loves to award first-time nominees for playing real life characters.Best Supporting Actor: No Oscar History? No worries. (Photo by @ Universal)Nominees since 2001: 17 prior Oscar winners, 34 prior nominees (with no wins), and 39 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 1 Oscar winner, 5 prior nominees, and 12 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 2 Oscar winners, and 3 first-time nominees.Mahershala Ali: Green Book – 1 Oscar win for Moonlight (2016)Sam Rockwell: Vice – 1 Oscar win for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2018)Sam Elliott: A Star is Born – No prior nominationsRichard E. Grant: Can You Ever Forgive Me? – No prior nominationsAdam Driver: BlacKkKlansman -No prior nominationsThis category leans heavily towards first-time nominees and winners with 17 of the last 18 Oscars going to first-time winners. Twelve of those 17 actors, 12 were first-time nominees, with five first-time nominees winning consecutively since 2014 (Jared Leto, J.K. Simmons, Mark Rylance, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell). This statistic will help Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) because they are first-time nominees who are up against prior Oscar winners Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Sam Rockwell (Vice).Who has the advantage? Adam Driver, Sam Elliott, and Richard E. Grant are the actors to watch according to the category’s history – even if the pundits have Mahershala Ali as favorite.Best Supporting Actress: First-Time Nominees Step Right Up(Photo by @ Netflix)Nominees since 2001: 20 prior Oscar winners, 23 prior nominees (with no wins), and 47 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 0 Oscar winners, 6 prior nominees, and 12 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 2 Oscar winners, 1 prior nominee (with no wins), and 2 first-time nominees.Emma Stone: The Favourite – 1 Oscar win for La La Land (2016) and one prior nomination for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)Rachel Weisz: The Favourite – 1 Oscar win for The Constant Gardener (2005)Amy Adam: Vice – five prior nominations for Junebug (2005), Doubt (2008), The Fighter (2010), The Master (2012) and American Hustle (2013)Regina King: If Beale Street Could Talk – No prior nominationsMarina de Tavira: Roma –No prior nominationsFirst-time winners have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar 18 times since 2001. No other acting category can boast this stat, which gives Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), Amy Adams (Vice), and Marina de Tavira (Roma) the advantage over Oscar winners and The Favourite co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.King and de Tavira have an advantage over multiple-time nominee Adams, because they’re first-time nominees in a category that has awarded 12 of the last 18 Oscars to first-time nominees. The category is so first-time-nominee–loaded that four of the last five winners (Lupita Nyong’o, Patricia Arquette, Alicia Vikander, Allison Janney) were first-time nominees, with Viola Davis (Fences) being the prior-nominated standout of the group.Who has the advantage? Regina King is almost a guaranteed lock to win the Oscar. However, based on the data we’ve analyzed, Marina de Tavira has a better probability of winning because Roma was nominated for Best Picture – 11 of the last 18 winning actresses have appeared in movies nominated for Best Picture. Could an upset be brewing? If she wins, you heard it here first.

We do know from the film s synopsis that it centers on a successful writer played by Janell Monáe who becomes trapped in some sort of alternate reality possibly one set in the slavery-era American South and must figure out a way to break free. It s definitely giving off some Get Out and Us vibes, which isn t too surprising, considering the film has played up the fact that the producer of those films is behind this one as well. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) 89%Directed by: Aaron SorkinStarring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella, Mark Rylance, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Michael KeatonOpening on: September 25, 2020 (Limited) followed by premiere on Netflix on October 16, 2020Aaron Sorkin began writing the script for this historical drama back in 2007, but the project suffered several setbacks that delayed it for more than a decade. Zemeckis has some big shoes to fill: the original tale of an annual convention of the world s witches that is interrupted by an inquisitive young boy sits at 100% on the Tomatometer (and its opening sequence has been terrifying young kids for decades). Anne Hathaway, who will star as the Grand High Witch, has even bigger shoes to fill, though: Anjelica Huston s performance as the world s head witch has made the character one of the most memorable kids villains in cinema.NovemberMank (2020) 83%Directed by: David FincherStarring: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Tuppence Middleton, Charles DanceOpening on: November 13, 2020 (limited, followed by release on Netflix on December 4)Working from a script written by his father Jack Fincher, director David Fincher tackles a piece of Hollywood history in Mank, which centers on screenwriter Herman J. (Sorry about that.) The whole family returns for the sequel, with Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, and more reprising their roles. Original co-director Kirk DeMicco is off making Vivo (see November releases), and so first-time feature director Joel Crawford, a veteran story artist, takes the reins.DecemberSoul (2020) 95%Directed by: Pete DocterStarring: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, John Ratzenberger, Daveed DiggsOpening on: December 25, 2020 on Disney+ (formerly November 20, 2020)The second Pixar offering of the year features Jamie Foxx as a jazz-loving middle school teacher whose soul is separated from his body during an accident and transported to a training center for newer souls preparing to enter the bodies of newborn babies.
