亚博足球APP采用百度引擎9（Baidu 5）Watch: Vin Diesel on the building-to-building jump in Furious 7 above. In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, actor Vin Diesel recalls the moment that for many has come to define the Fast and Furious franchise.VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLThe Movie: Furious 7 (2015) 82%When 2001 s The Fast and the Furious began with a trio of Honda Civics lifting a shipment of now-obsolete electronics from a delivery truck, there was no way to know that the film would eventually blossom into one of the most successful action-adventure franchises ever, still going strong 18 years later. Initially characterized by smaller-scale crime stories enlivened by elements of street-racing culture, the series has established a reputation for consistently one-upping its own breathtaking stunts and spectacular, over-the-top action scenes.By the time Furious 7 premiered in 2015, the franchise had already successfully transitioned into a globetrotting blockbuster adventure series, but its beating heart lay in the friendship between one-time criminal Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and former FBI agent Brian O Conner (Paul Walker). Just halfway through production on the film, however, Walker tragically suffered a fatal car accident, and his death loomed large over the proceedings. Diesel recalls his first interactions with Walker and how their relationship evolved over the course of the franchise.Vin Diesel and Paul Walker in 2001 s The Fast and the Furious. “We kind of embraced that he was this L.A. kid and I was this New York kid.” We got along from the start, and we kind of embraced that he was this L.A. kid and I was this New York kid. That was kind of the fun of building that brotherhood bond. We didn t know in the first film that we would be the poster child for brotherhood, but I guess it was beginning back then. He did something very interesting that was very flattering and also made me extremely uncomfortable.I d been acting since I was seven years old, and had gotten no lead roles, no lead movies, and then I went off and directed movies and went to Cannes and went to Sundance as a director. So, because of so many years of struggle, and then finally seeing the beginnings of success by doing it myself, I was very reliant on myself. I was very opinionated. And when we did a 50-person read-through for the first time at Universal with all the top executives, the marketing, and the directors and writers more people than I d ever seen in a production meeting. We were reading the script out loud. After every other line Paul was sitting on the opposite side of this big U-shaped table set-up he d look up and stop the read-through and say, Vin, what do you think of that line? And it kind of set the stage for what our relationship was gonna be, that he had a big brother in this. This was at the read-through when we didn t know each other. We had just met one second, and I guess I was so opinionated that Paul just wanted to hear truth. He didn t want any more Hollywood bulls t; he just wanted to know if the line was right or not. And he d stop and ask me, in front of everyone. Walker and Diesel s bond remained the center of the franchise. (Photo by Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures) I m proud of every moment of every frame and every player and everybody that s contributed. It s a big part of my life, both the happy times and the severe melancholy that comes with this whole saga for me. But I m proud of every moment of every frame and every player and everybody that s contributed. Of course, there s always faults and self doubt and, you know, a plague of being a perfectionist. You obviously have your highs and lows and your more confident moments and your less confident moments. And I just thought how grateful my children were born on these movies. Every one of my kids was born during a day I was filming with Paul. The irony is, I played the big brother in the saga, and one of the most influential people sending me off into fatherhood was Paul Walker. So, it s no mystery that these movies are very sacred to me. The Moment: Cars don t fly! There is perhaps no one sequence in the Fast and Furious franchise that quite captures its freewheeling, devil-may-care sensibility as acutely as the one that takes place in Abu Dhabi midway through Furious 7. In it, Dom and Brian pilot a supercar from one skyscraper to another, and then again to the next one, smashing through windows and defying gravity in a gleeful display of impossible physics. When Diesel first read it in the script, he was surprised, but flattered.Diesel as Dom, preparing for the leap. (Photo by Universal Pictures)“It was that moment where we realized that Fast and Furious didn t need to be restricted in any way.” The first thing I can think of is, I remember going to everyone and saying, Come on. Dom can t just lift up this car, and seeing their faces look at me like I was crazy, like, Of course he can. And I m thinking, Oh my God. The belief that you all have in Dom is profound. Because lifting up the car, it s technically possible. If anyone can do it, it s Dom! So I remember that was the theme of the day. It was one of those things that was so enticing because it was so much wish fulfillment. It was designed so well James Wan executed it brilliantly. Our second unit director, everyone just really knocked it out of the park. And it was that moment where we realized that Fast and Furious didn t need to be restricted in any way. That we were so thorough about story and character, and it s so much a tale of brotherhood and family, right, that we were allowed these kind of outrageous and fantasy-filled moments, and flying through the air was playing to that. Flying from building to building was playing to that. It was one of those solutions to the riddle, or answers to the riddle, How do we one-up the spectacle of each film? God, the things that we d been asked to do. Yeah, we were asked to fly. Obviously, CGI components to all of it. And traditionally, with Fast and Furious, we always try to take a practical approach first, so we ll take a practical run. But something as outrageous as that If you want to know if Paul and I drove from one building to the next, as much as I d like to say maybe, I mean, it s pretty obvious that that might not have been the thing for us to do. Cars can fly, with the help of CGI. (Photo by Universal Pictures) When you re sitting in that theater, and you see that scene, the first thing that reacts is the inner child in you. What s funny is that if you talked to us back then, we d be willing to do anything. What usually would happen was, in the first film, we went to, like, race car driving school. But then, as we continued making the films, it was more important for us to go to stunt-driving school. So, before every film, we would spend a couple of weeks in stunt-driving school and learn how to do stunts in cars. And you can learn as much as you want, but when it s actually shoot day, and the pyrotechnics are launching bombs and fireballs in the air and you re driving through smoke, and the steering goes out, it s always a dangerous thing. I don t think the world realizes how much risk one has to consider when doing some of those heavy action sequences with cars.Fortunately, we were safe. But it was always a running theme with Paul and I. We d do interviews, and we d talk about how we can t believe we re still OK, because of what we did and how committed we were to playing these roles. But yeah, without taking away the magic of movie making, thank God that that was in 2014 and

Production on John Wick: Chapter 4 has been held back a little bit by both the COVID-19 pandemic (and scheduling conflicts with Reeves other upcoming #4 sequel, The Matrix 4, scheduled for 12/22/2021), but the pieces are finally coming together for filming to happen at locations in France, Germany, and Japan this summer. Just last week, we learned that pop star Rina Sawayama will make her acting debut in a lead role in John Wick: Chapter 4, and now we know about another big addition to the cast. Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen has recently increased his Hollywood profile with roles in films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Certified Fresh at 84%) and Disney s live-action Mulan (Certified Fresh at 72%), and next, he will co-star in John Wick: Chapter 4 as an old friend of Wick s who shares many of his experiences and enemies. John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently scheduled for May 27, 2022. Finally, in what is probably a coincidence, both Donnie Yen and Keanu Reeves have been rumored in recent years to be in consideration for the role of Marvel s Namor the Sub-Mariner, with Yen even Tweeting this audition picture. Marvel Studios has made no official Namor announcements.Other Top Headlines1. ISSA RAE JOINS INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SEQUEL AS SPIDER-WOMAN (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Some weeks reveal certain trends in development news, and this week, the theme involves stars on the upswing landing big new projects with the potential of expanding their careers. Let s start with Issa Rae, whose popular YouTube series Awkward Black Girl led to the acclaimed HBO series Insecure (Fresh at 96%), which likewise led to a supporting role in The Hate U Give (Certified Fresh at 97%) and lead roles in The Photograph (Fresh at 74%), and The Lovebirds (Fresh at 65%). Issa Rae will also provide the voice of Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman, in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%) as the sequel s first new cast member. It is not yet known if Rae might also be in the running to play the role also suspected to be Jessica Drew in the untitled female-centric Spider-Man spinoff that director Olivia Wilde is currently developing (though it s also worth noting that there have been a few different Marvel heroes all called Spider-Woman). The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is currently scheduled for release on October 7, 2022. Although Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are both confirmed to be returning, other stars like Nicolas Cage (as Spider-Man Noir) and John Mulaney (as Peter Porker/Spider-Ham) haven t yet been announced.2. DWAYNE JOHNSON AND YAHYA ABDUL-MATEEN II TEAM UP FOR EMERGENCY CONTACT (Photo by Priscilla Grant, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is not yet a household name, but his face is becoming more and more familiar following breakout roles in two DC Comics projects, first as the villain Black Manta in Aquaman (Fresh at 65%), and then as nope-we re-not-spoiling-it in HBO s Watchmen (Fresh at 96%). Roles in US and The Trial of the Chicago 7 will also soon be followed by performances in the Candyman reboot (8/27/2021), The Matrix 4 (12/22/2021), and Aquaman 2 (12/16/2022) (for which he is currently preparing). Abdul-Mateen II and Dwayne Johnson are teaming up to produce an action movie set in Austin, Texas for Warner Bros. called Emergency Contact, in which Abdul-Mateen II will also star (it s not yet known if Johnson will have a supporting role, but it sounds like he s not the film s star). The premise of Emergency Contact is being kept secret for now, except that it s a high-concept, high-octane action film set in Austin, and that the screenwriters also worked with Dwayne Johnson on his upcoming DC Comics movie Black Adam (7/29/2022).3. SAMARA WEAVING LEADS NEW ADDITIONS TO CAST OF DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Damien Chazelle, who won an Academy Award for directing La La Land (Certified Fresh at 91%), and who also directed Whiplash (Certified Fresh at 94%) and First Man (Certified Fresh at 87%), has been trying to get his movie Babylon about Hollywood in the 1920s going for a few years now (much of that delay was caused by COVID-19, obviously). Babylon is going to feature a large ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, which will now also include Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Max Mingella (The Social Network), Lukas Haas (Witness), Eric Roberts (The Pope of Greenwich Village), and rocker-turned-actor Flea of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Katherine Waterston, who co-starred with Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice, also joined Babylon in a separate announcement. Paramount Pictures has scheduled Babylon for a limited release on December 25, 2022 which will then platform to a wide release on January 6, 2023.4. ROBERT DE NIRO, ANYA TAYLOR-JOY, CHRIS ROCK, AND TAYLOR SWIFT AMONG NEW ADDITIONS TO DAVID O. RUSSELL S LATEST ENSEMBLE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Another director who is assembling an ambitious ensemble for his next project is David O. Russell, whose last film six years ago was the 2015 Miracle Mop movie Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence. We ve known for a while now that the leads in his next film will be Christian Bale and Margot Robbie, supported by John David Washington, Rami Malek, and Zoe Saldana. This week, however, the cast list sort of ballooned to include Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Chris Rock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Shannon, Anya Taylor-Joy, and pop singer Taylor Swift, in a relatively rare acting performance (Swift s first since Cats). Both the premise and the title of this film are currently being kept secret by 20th Century Studios. Having said that, past reports have described the lead characters as being a doctor and a lawyer who form an unlikely partnership. 5. JONATHAN MAJORS TO PLAY ADONIS NEXT OPPONENT IN CREED III(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Even lifelong Rocky fans probably have to admit that the franchise was seriously struggling before it was revived in 2015 with the spinoff Creed (Certified Fresh at 95%), which turned the focus towards Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky s friend Apollo, as played by Michael B. Jordan. That film was followed by Creed II (Certified Fresh at 83%), in which Creed squared off against another son of a famous boxer, Ivan Drago, who killed Apollo in Rocky IV (Rotten at 40%). We don t yet know the premise for Creed III (with which Michael B. Jordan will make his feature film directorial debut), but we do now know that Adonis new boxing opponent will be played by Jonathan Majors of HBO s Lovecraft Country. As expected, fans were quick to speculate about who Majors might play, with the most common guess being the son (or some other relative) of Clubber Lang, who was played in Rocky III (Fresh at 63%) by Mr. T, whose last major role was over 10 years ago in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Certified Fresh at 86%). It is not yet known how the recent acquisition of MGM by Amazon might impact the theatrical release of Creed III.6. TIFFANY HADDISH TO PORTRAY FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER IN NEW BIOPIC(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)The recent career of Tiffany Haddish has been so prolific and ubiquitous that it might be easy to forget that her breakout role in Girls Trip (Certified Fresh at 91%) came just four years ago in 2017. Haddish hasn t had that much time to expand into other genres besides comedy, but she is indeed taking her shot at an ambitious dramatic role that will also require (ostensibly) a good amount of physical personal training, as she is producing and will star in a biopic about the life of three-time Olympic gold medalist Florence Griffith Joyner, popularly known as Flo-Jo. Florence Griffith Joyner (who died in 1998) was an American track and field athlete who in 1988 set still-standing world records in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, and then retired less than a year later. Tiffany Haddish will also be producing a documentary series about Flo-Jo as a companion to the narrative feature.7. GLENN CLOSE JOINS TWINS-STYLE COMEDY BROTHERS(Photo by Sony Pictures Classics)A little over a year ago, The Weekly Ketchup reported Avengers: Infinity War co-stars Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage were signed to co-star in a Twins-style comedy called Brothers for director Macon Blair (I Don t Feel At Home in This World Anymore, Certified Fresh at 89%). Before we get to this week s actual news, this is a good place to remind everyone that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now so big that its list of illustrious alumni is massive. That being said, yes, Brothers is going to feature another MCU star, and that will be Glenn Close, who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (Certified Fresh at 92%) as the leader of the Nova Corps. Close s role in Brothers isn t yet known, but an obvious guess is that she could be playing the mother of the two siblings played by Brolin and Dinklage. (Collider also pointed out that Glenn Close did play the mother of Ed Helms and Owen Wilson in the similarly-titled Father Figures in 2017.)8. IT: CHAPTER TWO ALUM JOINS REBOOT OF STEPHEN KING ADAPTATION FIRESTARTER(Photo by Michael Tran/Getty Images)One of the more memorable kills in IT: Chapter Two (Fresh at 62%) is the moment when a young girl is pulled under the bleachers by Pennywise the evil clown. That girl was played by 8-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who is now 11, and she has been cast as the lead in another Stephen King adaptation, the reboot of Firestarter, which was first adapted as a 1984 movie (Rotten at 37%) starring Drew Barrymore. The announcement of Armstrong s casting came along with a set photo of Armstrong in character, wearing a jacket that looks like it might have been in or around, you know, a fire. Armstrong joins a cast that includes the already announced Zac Efron as her father (originally played by David Keith) and Michael Greyeyes as the Native American government agent assigned to befriend her (controversially played by George C. Scott in the original film). Former ER star Gloria Reuben also landed a Firestarter role this week.9. ALICIA SILVERSTONE RETURNS TO HIGH SCHOOL IN REBEL WILSON COMEDY SCHOOL YEAR(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)It has been over 25 years since the now-classic teen comedy Clueless (Certified Fresh at 81%), and the career of its star Alicia Silverstone has taken her a lot of places, including Gotham City as Batgirl (Batman Robin, Rotten at 12%). Silverstone, now 44, is signed to return to high school (sort of) in the Paramount Players high school comedy Senior Year. Rebel Wilson will star in Senior Year as a cheerleader who wakes up from a coma after 20 years to return to her high school to regain her status and claim the prom queen crown that eluded her. 6.54.1 4月喜迎Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: We chatted about Waves while you promoted It Comes At Night, and you said it was a love story. Having seen the film, I ve got to ask, how is this a love story? Trey Edward Shults: It is a love story. I mean, there are love stories in it, no?Yes, but it s certainly not a rom-com or a romantic drama. Yes, but familial love is a kind of love, no? Love is the thing connecting everything in the movie. It s romantic love. It s the love of a brother and sister. It s the love of your partner. It s the love of parents and children. I think, too, with the last movie, like you said, it was so brooding. If anything, death was the center of that, and then this movie, it was like life and love. It was about the positive. I know the movie gets very dark, but I wanted to show the end of a relationship and the beginning of one, but then link it through familial love. That s what s running through it. It s all very broad, abstract stuff. I don t know if I can be more specific. It s also a hard movie to talk about without spoiling.Agreed. So let s talk about the casting, particularly Sterling K. Brown, because he s kind of got the world at his feet, right?Honestly, regarding Sterling, it was literally a dream come true to have him in this movie. I can t imagine anyone else besides Sterling playing this part. I didn t know Sterling s work until The People v. O.J. Simpson and he blew my mind. I ve been following him ever since, but following him as a human being – his interviews, the way he talks. He s a magical human being and a magical presence. It was also crazy when he came on [to the film]. It started with Kelvin and then came Lucas [Hedges], then Alexa [Demie] and Taylor, and then it kept going. The hardest thing was working out Sterling s schedule with This Is Us. We set it up to where we shifted our whole work week. We worked Saturday to Thursday. So he was doing the show in LA during the week, and then he d take a red-eye and fly to Florida to be on set the next day. I remember one day, he was lifting weights, then fighting with his son [Kelvin] that night, and then having this incredibly heavy, emotional scene with his daughter [Taylor] later that day. I don t know how he had the stamina, physical strength, or capacity to do it. He blew my mind. He just showed up as this beautiful man, but then he would get in the zone with his headphones, study the script all day, and then it was like Take one. Done. Call it. He just delivered. This film is semi-autobiographical, but when you cast Kelvin, you had to make adjustments to make it feel authentic. Talk about how you did that.Well, I hope it does feel authentic. I m a freakin white dude, so I can t speak to its authenticity. All I know is there s stuff in it from my past, but I think the larger credit goes to the actors, especially Kelvin. He s like a brother to me, and I wanted to work with him again [after It Comes at Night], and I wanted to give him a great role, because I cut some amazing acting out of the last one. So I sent him the script, and he wanted to be Tyler, so we sort of rebuilt Tyler, Ronald [Brown], and the family from the ground up. I can t speak for Kelvin because he s not here, but it almost feels like a combination of both of us. And a lot of the depth – the father and son stuff – is from Kelvin and his father. His father pushed him like that, but with music. That s why they re my collaborators. I just tried to listen, understand, and talk about it with him, Taylor, Renée [Elise Goldsberry], and Sterling. It was really was a collaboration. That made it what it is, and hopefully, if it feels special, it s because we all came together to built it that way.We also have to talk about Taylor, who plays the sister. She s an incredible discovery. I m so, so, so lucky. We saw an audition tape from our amazing casting director, Avy Kaufman, and it was her. They just got scenes. The first one was like the diner scene, and you couldn t take your eyes off her. There s so much going on internally. She doesn t have to say anything, and I m so compelled. There s a beautiful subtlety in her performance that s an inherent natural thing that an actor either has or they don t. I saw her audition, and she blew my mind. And then she met Lucas, they hit it off, and then that was it. We became a great, big, messy family. But I love that girl. I just hope she shoots off from this, because she deserves it.Let s talk about the awkward love story you gave her. It s just sort of where it naturally went with the writing. I still see the first half as a love story, but it s a relationship at its end. That couple had magnetic energy like combustible balls of fire. They love hard and they fight hard. Then the movie shifts, and it s all about rebirth. In my mind, the greatest tragedy that could happen happens midway through the film. I was crying like a baby writing, shooting, and editing it. It s just sheer devastation. And then, when everyone s at rock bottom, they go through a rebirth and evolve again. I wanted the movie to give you a hug with that second love story. You ve gone through some of the worst stuff in the world, and then it s like, what a difference a day makes. Because love can be the hardest thing in the world and it can be the most beautiful thing. How did you get Frank Ocean to let you use two of his songs? He s very particular about where he licenses his music.I just feel incredibly, incredibly blessed. Frank s one of my favorite living artists. His music, especially Channel Orange, Blonde, and Endless, they kind of changed my life. It s a bit intense. So I wrote a letter, and we sent him the movie, but it s not like I ever talked to Frank. Like, my people sent stuff to his people, so I m assuming he got that stuff. But it was funny because it was going on like a month or two, and I was still editing. I sent him a rough cut of the movie because I edited for a long time, and then his people were like, Yeah, it s not looking good. There are so many songs he won t just sign off on. Maybe you can reduce it to one song. But they came back, You re approved for all the music. You re good. And that s it. Like, I don t know if he watched the movie, read my letter. I don t know anything. I m just so blessed and grateful. I don t know how, but it happened. Finally, you must be the king of the ambiguous title. Krisha, It Comes At Night, now Waves; the narratives of each film are carefully hidden within the titles. So what do you want people to think about when they hear Waves, because the film is not about surfing. [Laughs] No, it s definitely not about surfing. It sounds cheesy, but it s really about highs and lows, the highs and lows of life and of love. There s some ocean stuff in it, but it s really more about the spirit of what the movie is. And that s what I hope people connect with.Waves opens in select theaters this Friday.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.
This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new titles like The Bodyguard, Gladiator 2, and Wonka. This WEEK S TOP STORYAPPLE WINS HEATED AUCTION FOR A CLOONEY AND PITT REUNION(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Movie stars fake friendships on movie sets all the time, but one franchise in which the stars seemed to genuinely enjoy working together was Steven Soderbergh s Ocean s Eleven (and its sequels), and that included the franchise s three biggest stars, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Over last weekend, the news broke that George Clooney and Brad Pitt were attached to star in an untitled thriller package that became the subject of a heated bidding war amongst such companies as Amazon, Annapurna, Apple, Lionsgate, MGM, Netflix, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. When the dust settled, the project was won by Apple Studios, which will reportedly give the film a robust theatrical release in addition to a likely release on Apple TV+ as well. The premise of the thriller is being kept secret, but the director who s attached is Jon Watts, who is coming off his hot streak as the director of all three Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland. Critics generally loved both Spider-Man: Homecoming (Certified Fresh at 92%) and Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%), and the third film Spider-Man: No Way Home (12/17/2021) suggests some multiverse-shaking changes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the trailer for the latter dropped, it also broke Avengers: Endgame s record for most views in 24 hours, which indicates it ll likely be another hit when it debuts in December.Other Top Headlines1. TONY-WINNING PLAYWRIGHT REVEALS CHANGES FOR THE BODYGUARD REMAKE (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Playwright Matthew Lopez became the first Latino writer to win the Tony Award for Best Play (for The Inheritance) Sunday night, and that was also an opportunity for reporters to find out more information on the high profile film project Lopez is working on right now. It was just two weeks ago that we learned Lopez was now working on the remake of the Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner 1990s classic The Bodyguard, and we now have a better idea of how Lopez is revisiting the premise. Lopez revealed that the singer in his version will be a young Latina performer, rather than the established star that Whitney Houston played in the original. Lopez elaborated, It’s about how her life has changed because she is an overnight sensation. In the 21st century, that means she’s in immediate need of protection. It s not yet known who Warner Bros. might be considering for the role of the singer or the title character.2. RIDLEY SCOTT PROMISES GLADIATOR 2 WILL BE NEXT AFTER HIS NAPOLEON MOVIE (Photo by ©DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Prolific director Ridley Scott turns 84 next month, but he shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon, especially considering that he has two films being released in the next two months: The Last Duel (10/15/2021) and House of Gucci (11/24/2021). Scott is currently preparing to direct Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte in the historical epic Kitbag for Apple Studios, but he s already making promises about the next film after that. Ridley Scott said this week that I m having [the next] Gladiator written now. So when I ve done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go. If it s okay to spoil a movie that came out over two decades ago, several of the characters in Gladiator didn t survive, so it s unclear who will be featured in the sequel, since there were plenty of gladiators in ancient Rome to pick from. The Napoleon epic Kitbag is expected to be released in 2023, so we might get Gladiator 2 in 2024 or so.3. TIMOTHEE CHALAMET S WONKA PREQUEL ADDS THREE FAMOUS BRITS (Photo by Steve Mack, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Timothée Chalamet s Dune remake is still a few weeks away from release (in the USA anyway), but he is already preparing to work on another ambitious project that revisits a popular character. Chalamet will be the third actor (after Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp) to play the title character in the prequel Wonka, which will be directed by Paul King, director of the Paddington movies, which are both Certified Fresh at 97% and 99%. The Wonka cast has been slowly growing over the past few weeks (including the addition of Jim Carter from Downton Abbey and Keegan-Michael Key), but this week it expanded impressively with the addition of three popular British actors. The new Wonka co-stars are Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Olivia Colman (The Favourite). Although Wonka has already started production, it sounds like it s going to need several months of post-production work, because Warner Bros. has scheduled it about 18 months away, on March 17, 2023.4. MICHAEL B. JORDAN TO PRODUCE ADAPTATION OF AWARD-WINNING BROKEN EARTH (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Once they get to a certain level of success, many actors take on the role of producer as well, though not all of them are equally, well, productive. One actor-turned-producer who is keeping quite busy is Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan, who in just the three years since 2018 already has 12 projects on his IMDb page as producer. The latest one that his production company Outlier Society is taking on is Sony s adaptation of the three-time Hugo Award-winning sci-fi trilogy The Broken Earth by author N.K. Jemisin. The first book in the trilogy, The Fifth Season, introduces a post-apocalyptic future in which humanity is continually faced with devastating weather events. It s not yet known if Jordan also plans to appear in the films.5. THREE NEW CHARACTERS SHED LIGHT ON AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Going into this week, we still didn t know much about the premise of the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (12/16/2022), except that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II s Black Manta will be one of the villains. But the addition of three new cast members offers a better idea of where the movie is headed. Indya Moore (Queen Slim) will play Karshon, who in the DC Comics is a Green Lantern villain and a shark endowed with intelligence and telepathic powers. Vincent Regan will play Atlan, an ancient ruler of Atlantis who gave the city its name, and Jani Zhao will play Stingray, who appears to be a new character created just for the film. Put it all together, and it sounds like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will feature flashbacks and characters that don t look entirely human.6. INDIGO GIRLS TO GET MAMMA MIA-STYLE MUSICAL GLITTER DOUBT (Photo by Effie Naddel/Everett Collection)They re still more common on stage than on film, but jukebox musical movies are growing in popularity. The subgenre is defined by its use of pop songs rather than original compositions, and very often, those songs are thematically connected, whether by genre or by artist. 2008 s Mamma Mia! (and its sequel), for example, used the songs of the pop group ABBA to tell its story. Now, the songs of the Indigo Girls will be used to similar effect in the LGBTQIA+ summer romance Glitter Doom, starring Alex Diaz and Alan Cammish as the titular characters. Other supporting characters will include Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Missi Pyle (Galaxy Quest), and Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black), along with cameo appearances by Tig Notaro and the Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) themselves.7. TYLER PERRY AND BLUMHOUSE TEAM UP FOR THE FIRST TIME (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)On the creative side, people tend to identify films with directors more than producers, but there are indeed some producers who have established strong reputations. Two such examples are Tyler Perry (who s also a writer, director, and star) and Jason Blum, whose production company Blumhouse is one of today s most successful specialists in the horror and thriller genres. Perry and Blum are now teaming up for the first time on a thriller called Help, to be written and directed by Alan McElroy, whose credits as a writer include Star Trek: Discovery and The Vampire Diaries on television and the first Wrong Turn movie (but not the sequels). The premise of Help is being kept secret for now, but we do know that it s already scheduled to start filming in Atlanta in 2022.8. J.K. SIMMONS TO LURK IN THE WOODS AS EVIL KILLER (Photo by Daniel McFadden/©Sony Pictures Classics)Prolific character actor and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons has played plenty of tough guys in film and TV (including his neo-Nazi character in HBO s OZ (Fresh at 92%). Simmons said this week that he didn’t want to play any truly scary bad guys when our kids were young, but now that his two children are in college, he has freed himself to unleash his inner villain. With that in mind, it was announced that Simmons will star as a sociopathic killer in the indie thriller The Woods, to be directed by Michelle Schumacher, who co-starred with Simmons in nine episodes of OZ but also directed him in her feature film directorial debut, 2017 s I m Not Here (Rotten at 38%). Simmons co-stars will include Allen Leech (Downton Abbey), Isabelle May, and Fernanda Urrejola, as he plays an evil killer who stalks a teenage girl suffering from anxiety due to a tragic event from her past. 9. MOVE OVER GARFIELD; HEATHCLIFF IS GETTING HIS OWN MOVIE TOO (Photo by Everett Collection)Pop culture is littered with characters that feel thematically similar. This is far from a new phenomenon, and you don t need to look any further than the newspaper funny pages to see the evidence. Garfield might be the most famous orange cat in the comic strips, but there was also Heathcliff, who was actually introduced in 1973, three years before Garfield. Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind recent movies like Godzilla vs Kong and the upcoming Dune remake, has acquired the film and TV rights to Heathcliff, which is now written and drawn by the nephew of the Heathcliff creator, Peter Gallagher. Gallagher will also act as producer alongside Steve Waterman, whose credits as producer include Stuart Little (Fresh at 67%) and the various Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. On an Apple device? Although the consequences of COVID-19 made New York Comic Con cancel its usual convention experience, ReedPOP, the organization behind the annual celebration of geek chic, still managed to corral some of its energy with NYCC Metaverse. The four-day event featured plenty of video panels on NYCC’s YouTube channel, a handful of exclusive merchandise for those who go to cons to shop, and even an attempt at a virtual dealer’s room that may give you some idea of the madness involved in navigating a real one. That said, the event was still muted in comparison to a full-fledged weekend at New York’s Javits Center. The film industry s continuing need to push back release dates means no high-profile movies to promote and even the comics industry itself is preparing for a lonelier, digital future. Lucky for us, television still offers a lot to NYCC – in fact, the 2019 convention felt like the show for TV. And even with fewer events, the virtual 2020 show still felt like a huge showcase for broadcast networks, streaming services, and cable outlets. Here’s a rundown of the big reveals and updates TV shows offered to fans over the course of NYCC the past few days.Star Trek Universe Panel Reveals Captain (?) Kathryn Janeway Set to ReturnWith Star Trek: Lower Decks ending its first season and Star Trek: Discovery about to begin its third, the Star Trek Universe panel dedicated its big news to the return of a welcome friend: Kate Mulgrew and her Star Trek: Voyager character Kathryn Janeway. Mulgrew will once again play the part in Star Trek: Prodigy, an animated series being developed for Nickelodeon. It will focus on a group of teenagers who commandeer a decommissioned starship. And from Mulgrew’s comments, it seems Janeway will be mentoring the young starfarers in some way. “How thrilling to be able to introduce these young minds to an idea that has elevated the world for decades,” she said. The announcement, of course, sent Trek fans into a tizzy as they debated Janeway’s role and even her rank – last time we saw her in Star Trek: Nemesis, she was an admiral, but the Prodigy press release referred to her as “captain.” Her real position on the show will, no doubt, spark more debate. On the other shows, Discovery is preparing to send viewers the far-flung future of 3187 and the Lower Decks gang teased Boimler’s (Jack Quaid) new position on the Titan will not change in the second season. Well, at least not at first. Sadly, overall Star Trek creative director Alex Kurtzman offered no updates on Star Trek: Picard’s second season or the in-development Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but he did tell one outlet he has enough ideas to keep Discovery on the air until 2027.Star Trek: Discovery returns this week.Doctor Who Set to Go Back Into Production, Plus New Details on this Year s Holiday Special COVID-19 even kept The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) sheltering in place this year, but the Doctor Who star was thrilled to mention cast and crew are preparing to go back into production on Season 13 soon. In fact, you can hear someone in the Zoom call say they may be back to work in the next couple of weeks.”The program is no stranger to long production breaks – it took nearly 15 years off, after all – but there will be at least one episode of Doctor Who in 2020: the holiday special “Revolution of the Daleks.” Whittaker teased The Doctor will be in an intergalactic prison for a long time and “has no idea what’s happening on Earth.” The TARDIS Team (or “fam”), meanwhile, try to get on with their lives. Yaz (Mandip Gill) has the hardest time re-acclimating to the slower pace of Sheffield, but any sort of domestic tidings are obliterated when a Dalek comes to town. Somehow, Yaz, Ryan (Tosin Cole), and Graham (Bradley Walsh) have to deal with the genocidal alien without The Doctor.“Talk about being thrown in the deep end,” Walsh said of their predicament. The group offered two preview photos of the special, but scheduling for the episode has not been finalized.Amazon Gives First Look at Invincible, Starring Steven YeunAfter what seems like an eternity, Amazon and co-creator Robert Kirkman finally unveiled footage from the upcoming animated adaptation of Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible. The series stars The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun as the son of an alien superhero. At age 16, his powers finally manifest and he must learn the family trade. That seemingly innocent brief hides the mature themes and extreme violence the comic and the series will explore. Beyond a cast which includes Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, and more, Kirkman announced Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Michael Dorn will lend his voice to Battle Beast – a former planetary guardian with an addiction to combat. The show is expected to premiere sometime next year. The Expanse Promises Most Epic Season Yet Season 5 of Amazon’s beloved science-fiction series The Expanse will be its most epic and the most personal season,” according to showrunner Naren Shankar. Centering on the notion that “you reap what you sow,” seeds of revolution and interpersonal conflict planted as far back as Season 1 will finally bear fruit. “It’s taking the people we’ve fallen in love with over the last four years and peeling back the layers,” he added. The story will also ask if they can “survive the most high-pressure situations they’ve ever been through” with their principles intact.Like Amazon’s superhero hit The Boys, The Expanse will offer the first three episodes of Season 5 on December 16 with the subsequent episodes releasing on a weekly basis.Snowpiercer Shares First Look At Season 2, Shares Details on Sean Bean s New CharacterSnowpiercer came to NYCC with a teaser for their upcoming season and a discussion of new characters Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) and Alexandra Cavill (Rowan Blanchard). Both have key connections to Jennifer Connelly’s Melanie Cavill and it sounds like life will not be easy for her as Wilford’s train, Big Alice, barrels toward Snowpiercer. It also means profound troubles for Layton (Daveed Diggs) and his fledgling democracy aboard the titular locomotive. Showrunner Graeme Manson teased Big Alice’s society as something decidedly more authoritarian and the preview suggests Wilford and Layton are on a collision course all their own.Season 2 debuts on January 25The Watch Set to Take Some Liberties in Adapting Terry Pratchett s City Watch NovelsThe most important takeaway from BBC America’s panel for the upcoming series The Watch: Wendell Pierce is now part of the very small fraternity to voice author Terry Pratchett’s version of Death! Matt Berry will also appear as a talking sword called Wayne in the punk rock fantasy inspired by Pratchett’s City Watch novels (themselves set within the writer’s larger Discworld).Executive producers Richard Stokes and Simon Allen were quick to admit the show takes some liberties with Pratchett’s world and characters – nary a plate of armor to be found anywhere! – but it still sets out to honor the sarcastic and anarchic worlds Pratchett created, right down to the Watch being hamstrung by the city’s quasi-legal organized crime guilds. His books are full of rich characters and wonderful environments, Stokes said.Allen, who also serves as showrunner, went one step further in his admiration of Pratchett, telling viewers, Go read the books. They will change your life! The series features characters like Constable Carrot (Adam Hugill), a six-foot, broad-shouldered man who grew up believing he was a dwarf; an actual dwarf who moved to the city to escape the race s rigid unary gender system and uses “queer magic a conflicted werewolf with concerns about Carrot’s devotion to the Watch; and Watch captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), a “dissolute” alcoholic according to the actor. Other characters include a noble turned vigilante with a pet dragon, a city ruler who “uses sarcasm more than anything else,” and recurring antagonist Karcer Dun (Sam Adewunmi), who the producers said may prove to be less of a villain as time goes on.The Watch comes to BBC America in January 3rd.The Walking Dead Panel Teases Crossovers and a Whole New Element to Its UniverseThe Walking Dead might be ending (eventually), but the zombie universe shambles on with two additional series on the air right now and plans for a further spin-off and anthology series in development – then, of course, there s that feature film with original star Andrew Lincoln on the way. It was so much content, AMC had to split its NYCC Walking Dead panels across two days. On the first day, a Showrunners Summit saw TWD Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple refer to a “far-flung story” which may see characters from the newest series, The Walking Dead: The World Beyond meeting up with favorites from Fear the Walking Dead or the original series. Considering World Beyond s focus on CRM, its story and Rick s (Lincoln) could intersect.Meanwhile, Fear will introduce a new sort of bounty hunter who specializes in locating people even if they ve become Walkers. Also, Morgan s (Lennie James) weird red eyes (as glimpsed in a clip shown during the panel) will be explored throughout the season as his new situation will lead to a whole new element of the Walking Dead universe.Back on the original Walking Dead, the Commonwealth and Maggie s (Lauren Cohan) reaction to Negan s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) new place in the community will become the focus of the bonus Season 10 episodes currently in production. The 24-episode final season will occur sometime afterward, proving there is still plenty of life to The Walking Dead.Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyond are currently airing on AMC.Syfy s Resident Alien Reveals First 10 MinutesSyfy brought the first 10 minutes of its new series Resident Alien to NYCC. Based on the Dark Horse comics by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, the show stars Alan Tudyk as an extraterrestrial on a “diabolical” mission who must disguise himself as a country doctor in a Colorado backwater when his ship crashes. According to showrunner Chris Sheridan, “he’s getting to know what it’s like to be human.” That exposure to humans is an element straight from the comic, although his drive to recover a lost tool to complete his mission is a new concept from Sheridan. Will becoming Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle alter his sense of duty? We’ll find out next year.Resident Alien debuts on Syfy in January.American Gods Adds New Characters As It Moves LakesideArmed with a trailer, American Gods confirmed it is finally making its way to the Lakeside portion of author Neil Gaiman’s book. Star Ricky Whittle said it was a “comfort” to know where the story is going – especially as Lakeside gives his character, Shadow Moon, a whole new status quo while he ponders the revelation about his father. Gaiman referred to Lakeside as a “little Twin Peaks-y story of its own.” Nevertheless, new showrunner Chuck Eglee forced Gaiman to consider what the other characters are doing while Shadow soul-searches and the stories they developed as a consequence will take the material in new directions.Besides introducing a clearer motivation for the new gods via Bruce Langley’s Technical Boy, the series will introduce a brand-new character, Cordelia, to the mix. Played by Ashley Reyes, Gaiman called the character, who takes Shadow’s place at Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) side, an “astonishing” addition.“For a human, she knows what she’s doing,” Reyes said of Cordelia, adding she “brings the humanity” out of the old god. Having no family of her own, she clings to him quickly. It may lead to some initial conflict with Shadow when they meet, but they have quite a strong bond” as the season wears on.And though it sounds like the characters will spend a lot of time apart, the trailer suggests a reunion between Shadow and Wednesday is set for sooner rather than later.American Gods returns in early 2021.Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. Will Be Unlike Any Other Marvel Series We ve Seen Offering a few clips during their NYCC appearance, the cast and producer of Hulu’s upcoming M.O.D.O.K. series unveiled a glimpse into the home life of Marvel’s Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing. Patton Oswalt, who also serves as a producer, voices the beleaguered Marvel supervillain. Forced to sell his company to a competitor, he’s now a workaday Joe facing a destiny he no longer controls and a wife, Jodie (Aimee Garcia), whose home business is now more successful than he is. Then there’s his “queen bee” daughter Melissa (Melissa Fumero) – or M.E.L.I.S.S.A. depending on who you talk to – who wants to follow in M.O.D.O.K.’s footsteps, and his super-happy son Lou (Ben Schwartz), whose interests in magic and Judaism set him apart from the rest of the family.Realized by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios – the crew behind Robot Chicken – using stop-motion animation, M.O.D.O.K. looks like no other Marvel series. Indeed, it won’t be like any other Marvel series as it is one of the handful of idiosyncratic projects Hulu greenlit before Marvel Studios took over all of Marvel Entertainment’s creative endeavors.M.O.D.O.K. is coming soon to Hulu.Helstrom Shows Off First 10 Minutes, Future Remains Uncertain One of the other final Marvel Television projects for Hulu, Helstrom, screened the first 10 minutes of its first episode, in which Dr. Hastings (June Carryl) faces another tough night at the asylum and Daimon (Tom Austen) discovers his exorcism for the evening is nothing of the sort.Somewhere between family drama and horror TV show, Helstrom shares that “like no other Marvel show” vibe with M.O.D.O.K. And like that animated program, its future is unknown.Helstrom debuts this week.Shadow and Bone Reveals Musical Theme, Promises Ocean s 11 and Game of Thrones HybridAuthor Leigh Bardugo and executive producer Eric Heisserer offered a genuinely odd preview of the Grishaverse series Shadow and Bone. Thanks to COVID-19 and the lead-time needed to complete special effects, the pair offered no trailer. But they did convince Netflix to let them preview composer Joseph Trapanese’s “Grisha theme.” Heisserer described the series as “Ocean’s 11 in a Dickensian/Game of Thrones world” and promised he is trying hard to avoid putting the VFX crew into a grueling crunch period. Consequently, it may still take some time for any footage from the show – which stars Kit Young, Jessie Mei Li, and Ben Barnes as The Darkling – to materialize.Netflix Charmer Hilda Gets Epic and Introduces A New AntagonistOne of the most charming comic book adaptations on a streaming service is set to make its Netflix return this December. It follows Hilda (Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey), a young girl who moves from the wilds to the relative metropolis of Trollburg. Her spirit of adventure never wavers, and in a world filled with monsters and secrets, that tenacity is a strength and a weakness. So much so, in fact, Ramsey revealed a song she wrote about Hilda’s inability to learn from her mistakes will be featured during the end credits of a Season 2 episode.Comic book creator Luke Pearson and head writer Stephanie Simpson teased the show will become more epic with the arrival of a genuine antagonist for Hilda – the chief of Trollburg’s safety patrol – and a further exploration of the city’s stranger quarters, like an old mill and a rumored witch’s tower which both moves from location to location and descends into the ground instead of building into the sky.Director Andy Coyle called Pearson and Simpson’s plans “big ‘scope’ ideas, especially for a TV show.” Although he was quick to add the biggest challenge of Hilda, the more subtle emotions of abstracted cartoon characters, remains the same. “It sounds counter-intuitive, but that’s way harder to pull off than a hoard of giant monsters in a kinetic set-piece.”Hilda returns to Netflix in December.Stargirl Will Face Off Against Eclipso In Season 2 (Which Is Still A Long Ways Off)Make no mistake, Stargirl’s second season is a long way off. Officially slated for The CW’s nebulous 2021 midseason, executive producer Geoff Johns told his cast during their NYCC session that the writers are in the midst of putting Episode 4 together. Nonetheless, they convinced him to offer some answers about the marathon of teases included at the end of Season 1. The major villain will be Eclipso, a creature of darkness who killed both Yolanda Montez and Beth Chapel in the pages of his own short-lived DC comic book. Both actors Yvette Monreal and Anjelika Washington hope to avoid their counterparts fate. Johns added Eclipso is a “scarier” threat than the Injustice Society and it will be quite a journey for Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) and the Justice Society of America to defeat him.Though once a member of the ISA, it is unclear if The Shade – another character teased at the end of Season 1 – will be a friend or foe. Johns was quick to credit fellow series producer James Robinson with making the character compelling in his 1990s Starman series. In Robinson’s book, the character merely dabbled in villainy as it suited his own purposes and it seems he may do the same here. The biggest of the teases was, of course, the revelation that Starman (Joel McHale) is still alive. Johns said his reason for showing up now will become clearer by the end of Season 2’s first episode. He also mentioned the other objects Stargirl stole from the old JSA headquarters will find new owners while Yolanda (Monreal) comes to grips with killing someone.Stargirl returns sometime in 2021.Pennyworth Sets December Premiere for Season 2Though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed Pennyworth’s second season, it is still making a 2020 debut. Set for a December 13 premiere on Epix, the program will air four episodes into the early part of January before taking a pause to complete the remaining six episodes. It sounds like it will be worth the wait.Show creator Bruno Heller and stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, and Paloma Faith offered NYCC viewers a brief preview of events. Set one year after the conclusion of Season 1, the war everyone worked to prevent has broken out and Thomas Wayne (Aldridge) is back in London looking after the CIA’s interests. Martha (Emma Paetz) is ready to fight for order, but Alfred (Bannon) wants nothing more than to earn enough money to move to the United States. Confusing matters, though, is Martha’s pregnancy. Though the child is presumably Thomas’s son, Aldridge and Bannon talked over each other to suggest things may not be so clear cut. Further complicating the issue: Thomas is engaged to a fine woman back in the States, although Heller characterized her as a part of the “old world” Thomas wants to escape. He event went to far as to call her a “throwaway gag.”Perhaps more solid are the new additions to the cast: Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox and Jessica de Gouw as Melanie Troy. The former is a well-established member of the Batman supporting cast, although he will be “working for the bad guys” at the start, according to Heller. Troy, meanwhile, is the wife of Alfred’s wartime commanding officer. Nonetheless, they will have an “immediate connection.”Bet’s (Faith) loyalty to Lord Harwood (Jason Flemyng) will be rewarded with a position in his new regime. And as Faith put it, “She’s the sort of person who gets carried away in the uniform.”On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.Photo thumbnail courtesy of The CW, Starz, AMC

Finality would seemingly be the major topic of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since Disney released the first trailer for the film at Star Wars Celebration last April, the message has been loud and clear: The 42-year saga of the Skywalker family is ending. Star Wars itself may be a brand that will never die, but this version of it is on its final chapter.Fittingly enough, the final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker continues this idea not only with its onscreen text, but a return to some ideas not yet used in the sequel trilogy. Let’s take a look at what this trailer offers us about the film and how it circles back to the first time audiences thought Star Wars was ending. The Rebellion RebornJoel MearesThe final moments of Star Wars: The Last Jedi were hopeful despite the crushing odds. General Leia Organa’s (Carrie Fisher) Resistance against the First Order numbered so few people, they could all be evacuated from Crait aboard the Millennium Falcon. But as this trailer makes clear – thanks to Poe Dameron’s (Oscar Isaac) line about good people needing leadership – the Resistance will be reinforced.A year has transpired since the events of both The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we certainly hope Leia, Poe, Finn (John Boyega), Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and the other survivors of Crait were able to drum up support. But the new trailer makes it clear that the level of reinforcement will be staggering. A shot later in the trailer indicates an armada will form for one final battle against the First Order that may rival the Rebel fleet in Return of the Jedi.At the one-minute mark, we see this fleet of Resistance ships. It includes the Falcon, a number of Mon Cala frigates, and ships that fans are already speculating are the Ghost from Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian’s Razor Crest. But considering the echo of Return of the Jedi’s Rebel armada, we imagine these ships will still be outnumbered thanks to all those Imperial Star Destroyers glimpsed throughout the trailer. The Thrones of Sheev Palpatine and the Emperor s Return(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)The trailer is surprisingly heavy on thrones. The seat of Imperial power always followed Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) wherever he went, but early drafts of Return of the Jedi featured a throne room hiding deep in the core of the Imperial capital planet, a world creator George Lucas planned to name Had Abbadon, but later changed to Coruscant to align with the Expanded Universe. At 54 seconds into the trailer, we see a version of that Had Abbadon throne bathed in a misty light. Combined with the voice of Palpatine saying “long have I waited,” we can conclude this is a throne he fashioned during his years in hiding. Although, a subsequent shot at 1:59 of Rey seemingly confronting Palpatine sat upon that throne may indicate this is all another Force dream. But one throne is definitely not a dream: the seat the Emperor used in Return of the Jedi, which is clearly visible at 1:48 as Rey and Kylo prepare for a fight among the ruins of the throne room from the second Death Star. We have to admit this is a bold reuse of an Original Trilogy location as director J.J Abrams came under criticism for essentially remaking the original Star Wars with The Force Awakens. Placing the Sequel Trilogy’s primary protagonist and antagonist in that setting means Abrams intends to fully embrace aspects of Return of the Jedi to underscore that promised finality. Also, it just looks cool.At the same time, you may be wondering if Palpatine will actually appear in the film. The appearance of an Imperial Star Destroyer emerging from ice suggests to us the Emperor and his Empire will make a startling return.Threepio’s Sacrifice(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)And then, the John Williams score stops for a moment in which new character Babu Frick works on protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). The droid scans the people assembled (which includes Kerri Russell s Zorri Bliss) and Poe asks, What are you doing? The droid’s response: “Taking one last look, sir, at my friends.” It certainly suggests the character will make a noble sacrifice in The Rise of Skywalker. If we allow George Lucas and the filmmakers who followed him the notion that events in Star Wars rhyme like poetry, then there’s something genuinely poetic about Threepio sacrificing himself for the greater good. He is one of two characters to appear in all of the Skywalker films and he is one of Anakin Skywalker’s abiding legacies; his end would be fitting in this film. That is, of course, assuming whatever mission Threepio’s getting fitted for will end in his destruction. The scene appears to sync up with the shot from the D23 footage revealing Threepio with red eyes. We can probably assume he is being sent to a First Order base or Star Destroyer to obtain information. It could all be moments from his last hours or his line in this trailer could be played for laughs in the finished film as another example of his theatrical disposition.Or, to put it another way, this is an echo of his “I’m done for” moment in the Jundland Wastes back in the original Star Wars. But we hope Threepio (and R2-D2 for that matter) get a proper send-off. Whether that means they are destroyed or retired with Leia all depends on how the story plays out.A Green World And The Death Star RemainsJoel MearesThe bones of the second Death Star scattered throughout the trailer suggest a return to the forest moon of Endor. And, as it happens, we definitely see a lot of greenery in other parts of the trailer. But all of this could be another dodge, just as Jakku looked a lot like Tatooine. Abrams may want the scenery without the history, as landscapes pockmarked with the literal debris of previous Star Wars films continue to be highly effective images. If it is Endor, the message is clear: This story was meant to end there which is true (from a certain point of view). Going back to Lucas’s original drafts for Star Wars, the Empire (or the First Galactic Kingdom) was always meant to be defeated by forest-dwelling creatures. At the time, they were Wookies from the planet Yavin. But as things developed, Star Wars featured one Wookie and a rebel base situation on a jungle world. By the time of Return of the Jedi, Lucas reasoned people were too familiar with Wookies to find their homegrown rebellion against the Empire interesting, so he cut them in half and called the new creatures Ewoks – granted, the astronomical toy sales as the key motivation for the existence of Ewoks sounds as equally plausible. But Lucas never moved away from this forest planet conclusion and it appears Abrams will honor that idea in The Rise of Skywalker. At the same time, all those shots of the Death Star ruins caught up in the sea suggests this green world may be more diverse than the forest moon of Endor as Star Wars planets tend to feature a single biome. Explosions in the Star Wars galaxy do not obey normal physics, so it is possible parts of the second Death Star were flung clear across the quadrant to a world with forests, plains (as glimpsed in the first trailer), and vast seas. But if Abrams wants to evoke Endor, he might as well use Endor and give it these other geographic and biological features. We signed up for recurring scenery when Return of the Jedi featured a second Death Star.“Now Your Coming Together … Is Your Undoing”(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)But for all the provocative glimpses of an iceberg in space, Dominic Monahan’s character, space battles, and the Resistance riding horse-like creatures alongside Jannah (Naomi Ackie), one key line of dialogue stuck out to us: Palpatine’s declaration that “your coming together” will be someone’s undoing. The line is interesting as it echoes his Return of the Jedi proclamation that Luke s (Mark Hamill) faith in his friends is his greatest weakness. The conflict between the community Luke supports and isolationist Sith thinking is one of the great ongoing elements of Star Wars. Fans of the Knights of the Old Republic video games are given the choice to create strong bonds among the characters they meet or reject it all for the promise of Dark Side power. Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords complicates this even further as most of the characters who tag along on your adventure are Force-sensitive and have the potential to become Jedi or Sith. And in the Prequel Era, the isolation of the Jedi allows Palpatine to enact his plans without any sort of suspicion until it is far too late.It should also be mentioned that Luke calls out overconfidence as Palpatine s weakness. If the Emperor had made his return in The Last Jedi, we’d be inclined to believe the “coming together” he refers to in the trailer is the Resistance, but we’re going to take a leap of faith and suggest he is addressing Rey and Kylo here. Does that mean the characters will ultimately undermine each other and switch sides? That’s unlikely as the film represents the last hours of nine-film epic, but it may tie up the still dangling notion of the Force needing to be in balance. Are Kylo and Rey the real chosen ones from the prophecy introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace? There is time enough to just about make that work. Also, to come back to Palpatine s weaknesses, his perception of future events also undermines him, and one imagines whatever he foresees for Rey and Kylo will also backfire on him.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters December 20. always take over Shorty’s when it comes right down to it. But considering how much of the story the show wrapped up last year, the thing we can’t wait to see is how it recreates itself. Well, once Waves and Doc have been rescued, of course.Returning: Summer 2019Preacher 87%: Season 4 | AMC(Photo by Alfonso Bresciani/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)Why We Can’t Wait: Even though Jesse (Dominic Cooper) managed to get most of what he wanted across the third season, there are still troubles to conquer before he can confront God. For starters, he and Tulip (Ruth Negga) have to save Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) from the Grail base at Masada, which means they will have to face off against Herr Starr (Pip Torrens). Beyond that, there’s the ever-present threat of the Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) and his deal with Satan (Jason Douglas). Should Jesse die, his soul and Genesis will find their way to Hell, where the Prince of Lies plans to use the power of Genesis for his dark ends. And if that isn’t enough, there is still God to consider at the end of the road. His attempts to prove to Tulip that He is loving and merciful always seem to make things worse. And like Starr, he also has a grand design that Jesse and Genesis could spoil. Considering Preacher defied the odds and survived to a fourth season, this could be endgame for the series as well. When you think about the epic checkerboard the series set up, this might be the right time for it.Returning: Summer 2019The Boys: Season 1 (2019) 84% | Amazon Prime VideoWhy We Can’t Wait: Flipping the superhero script, Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson’s The Boys takes place in a world where powered heroes are as corruptible and vain as any celebrity. But there is some sort of oversight, even if its legality is questionable: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Karen Fukuhara, Laz Alonso, and Tomer Capon star as a group dedicated to dealing with the excesses of the superheroes. But some members of the group may take their task too personally and to unfortunate extremes. Their principle antagonists are the Seven, a group of superheroes with more than a few similarities to the classic Justice League lineup. Like Preacher, the series has the potential to be profanely funny, even if the god being mocked on this series is the American notion of the superhero.Debuts: 2019The Tick: Season 2 (2019) 100% | Amazon Prime VideoWhy We Can’t Wait: After a stellar first season, we anticipate a bigger season 2 based around Tick’s psychosis and Arthur’s anxiety. But of course, there is a mystery to solve as the duo has been warned about what might happen with the return of the superhero community to the City. AEGIS, the superhero monitoring agency, is none-too-thrilled by their antics. But really, we are here for Dangerboat, who needs more screen time in the upcoming season. If it continues to build on all of the ideas from preceding Tick series and the paradigm it set up in this version — Valorie Curry is the best version of Arthur s sister Dot to date — the second season has the potential to be the funniest and best Tick unleashed.Returning: 2019Stargirl: Season 1 | DC Universe(Photo by DC Universe)Why We Can’t Wait: As one of executive producer Geoff Johns’ earliest comic book series, Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. lived an all-too-brief life in the 1990s. But thanks to DC Universe, Johns gets to explore the idea again with Stargirl. Brec Bassinger stars as Courtney Whitmore, a teenage girl who moves from Southern California to Blue Valley, Nebraska when her mother marries Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson). Rummaging through his stuff, she discovers he was a member of the Justice Society of America and decides to become a hero with the aid of Starman’s (Joel McHale) gravity-defying Cosmic Staff. Between a youthful premise and a love of Golden Age heroes like Dr. Mid-Nite (Henry Thomas), we expect the show to be a fun mixture of high school hijinks and superhero action — just like the comic book.Debuts: Late 2019Watchmen: Season 1 | HBO👀 pic.twitter.com/b2HeLQiVjq HBO (@HBO) January 7, 2019Why We Can’t Wait: The 2011 Watchmen movie was the best possible movie it could be, though many (justifiably) see the flaws in trying to contain Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s expansive 12-issue series into two hours and 43 minutes — or three hours and 35 minutes if you have the Ultimate Edition with the “Tales of the Black Freighter” sequence woven back in. Moore himself believes adapting the work into a dramatic format is a waste of resources. But if it must be adapted, television was always the natural home for a story that spans generations, four Nixon administrations, and the time it takes Dr. Manhattan to decide life is special. Lost’s Damon Lindelof developed the series to serve as a successor to the comic book, but not as a direct sequel or remake. That idea may have changed as the concept developed. Taking place in the modern day, HBO s Watchmen picks up in a world decades after Adrian Veidt s (Jeremy Irons) plot was exposed by fellow Minuteman Rorschach. And despite the visual cues from the comic book — and the expansion of masks in the clips seen so far — the television series most unsettling idea may be how close our world has come to the book s dark vision.Debuts: 2019Legion: Season 3 (2019) 93% | FX(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/FX)Why We Can’t Wait: David Haller (Dan Stevens) is finally the villain in this wildest of X-Men spin-off media. While we hope for more dance sequences and strange imagery, the show needs to confront this radical change to the status quo. With David finally embracing the thrill he gets from hurting people — and, in fact, violating Syd (Rachel Keller) in the process — David is closer to becoming the reality-destroying Legion than ever before. Though the second season meandered a bit to get David to that place, finally putting him in a villainous context may give the show the same sort of narrative thrust it had in the first season and the underpinnings necessary to make its visuals, format-breaking asides, and other flights of fancy as strong as viewers know they can be. But perhaps the most thrilling aspect of the show going forward is the very challenge of highlighting a character who cannot be redeemed.Returning: 2019
亚博足球APP As The Mandalorian nears the end of its second season, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) must make a difficult choice in his attempt to rescue Grogu. In doing so, he also offers an unlikely opportunity for a former foe. While not as focused on the larger universe as recent episodes, this week once again proved The Mandalorian is more than capable of telling its own tales on its own terms. So let s dive into Chapter 15: The Believer and discover why writer/director Rick Famuyiwa is overdo for his own Star Wars story. The following contains spoilers about The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 7, “Chapter 15: The Believer.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode.Last Week, Grogu Was Baby Yoda–napped(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Arriving on Tython so Grogu can use Jedi temple ruins to contact a Jedi willing to train him, Djarin encountered Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Fett s main concern is the recovery of the armor Djarin took from Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) and offered to protect the child in exchange for it. Sadly, Fett and Shand s help was not enough to prevent the Imperial Remnant from abducting Grogu. Djarin quickly formed a plan to save him, but it requires the assistance of former Imperial sharpshooter, Mayfeld (Bill Burr).Din Djarin and His Accomplices Use Deadly Force To Hunt Moff Gideon(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Instead of the prison break last week s episode appeared to tease, Cara Dune (Gina Carano) uses her authority as a New Republic Marshal to secure Mayfeld s release into her custody. As part of Djarin s plan, Mayfeld needs to use his knowledge of Imperial codes and procedures to ascertain the coordinates of Moff Gideon s (Giancarlo Esposito) light cruiser. Once he hears Grogu s life is in the balance, Mayfeld agrees to assist. Needing direct access to an Imperial terminal, he suggests setting course for the secret mining operation on Morak.Once on the planet, Hess and Djarin disguise themselves as Shoretroopers to infiltrate a refinery for highly-volatile mineral rhydonium. When attempting to access an Imperial network in the mess hall with the terminal, Mayfeld backs out after noting Valin Hess (Richard Brake) among the officers. The two have history. Desperate to find Grogu, Djarin removes his helmet so the terminal can complete a facial scan. Unfortunately, all of their mucking about attracts the attention of Hess, but the Imperial officer only wants to congratulate them, as they were the only transport team to make it back to base. Things turn sour when Mayfeld darkly reminisces about the Burnin Konn engagement of Operation: Cinder, a mission which led to the deaths of roughly 10,000 troopers. When Hess dismisses the losses, Mayfeld shoots him.The resulting firefight leads to Hess and Djarin s escape, thanks to timely assists by Dune, Shand, and Fett. Djarin recovers his armor and Dune decides to let Mayfeld go after seeing him hit one of the rhydonium transports from the Slave I hatch and blowing up the entire Imperial base.Leaving Mayfeld on Morak, Djarin sends a message to Gideon declaring war.A Change of a Hardened Heart Suggests Imperial Goons Are Not All Created Equally(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Mayfeld s reappearance here is a surprising change from his more villainous debut last season in Chapter 6, The Prisoner — also directed by Famuyiwa. It is, nevertheless, a welcome change as Mayfeld shows a hidden depth under his quips. Concern for the loss of life is not a quality the Empire or the Remnant values, and this growing concern was clearly a key reason Mayfeld walked away from the Imps after Burnin Konn.As it happens, Operation: Cinder was part of Sheev Palaptine s contingency plan to cripple the galaxy — Rebels and Imperials alike — should he ever perish. While on its face, it was meant to bring ecological devastation to world like Naboo and Burnin Konn, the high casualty counts were also part of the design. It is doubtful Hess or Mayfeld knew the real reasons for the operation, though, or the other aspects of Palpatine s plan, the retreat of certain Imperial forces to the Unknown Regions.Nevertheless, their reactions here illustrates a distinct difference in character. Hess is a true believer in the Empire s definition of order, while Mayfeld was probably a conditional Imp at best. As seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story and intimated by Luke Skywalker s desire to leave Tatooine, people joined the Imperial military because they are out of options. Typically, the training crushes a person s spirit and turns them into loyal goons like Hess, but sometimes a moral center survives. It is clearly the point of Famuyiwa s script as Mayfeld proved to be more honorable than the other characters he introduced in Chapter 6: The Prisoner. It also suggests Famuyiwa has a longer-form Star Wars story of his own to tell. His directorial debut in the galaxy, Chapter 2: The Child, was a fabulous self-contained adventure seemingly inspired by the simple question What if Boba Fett fought Jawas? Chapter 6, his debut as a writer (with Christopher Yost), continued with the seemingly one-off stories, while introducing a compelling set of miscreants, Mayfeld included. While it is possible he will stay on Morak to help the indigenous population fend off Imps and pirates — a worthy conclusion to his tale — it is also possible Famuyiwa has found a way to highlight the struggles of more common people caught between the never-ending conflicts in the galaxy. And with Star Wars expanding its television footprint to 19 series(!) in the next few years, we have to wonder if Famuyiwa will apply his craft to, say, Rangers of the New Republic. He is a great a filmmaker, and it s clear he can do great things in the Star Wars format, so we think it is time to set him loose on a series or a feature film. He is more than capable.Although, considering Dune declared Mayfeld dead while letting him go, we also have to wonder if he will have to dodge those Rangers in the upcoming series or befriend them.Questioning The Remnant(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)While we ponder Mayfeld s future in New Republic space, we also have to consider the Remnant s place in all of this.Is Another Operation: Cinder Afoot? While Palpatine s contingency plans were meant to cripple the Remnant and the New Republic in short order, both factions endured. Is the chaos Hess said would soon happen part of another contingency? The forces that will become the First Order and the Final Order are already ensconced in the Unknown Regions by this point, so sacrificing more Imps to hobble the New Republic feels on-point for the Sith Lord. Provided he s still issuing commands in his bizarre afterlife, of course. What Is The Remnant s Command Structure? Expanding on a question we ve asked before, it is still unclear if these Imperial Remnant enclaves are working in concert or independently of one another. In the Star Wars: Battlefield II campaign, directives regarding Operation: Cinder and other aspects of Palpatine s contingency are delivered to high ranking Imps via prerecorded holo-messages from the Emperor himself. The secrecy involved suggests Palpatine may have encouraged Remnant forces to splinter as part of the plan to cripple anyone not in the Unknown Regions. At the same time, it is possible Gideon united the factions into one organized Remnant. But even if that is the case, it still leaves us to wonder if Gideon is working at Palpatine s behest or for his own ambitions. How Strong Is the ISB? The Imperial Security Bureau definitely gives our heroes pause, but its strength only seems to extend to Remnant controlled zones or specific operations directed by Gideon, himself a former ISB operative. Is the ISB a credible threat? If so, why did the ISB lose track of Djarin and Grogu following the events on Nevarro last season? Why Did the Terminal Recognize Djarin s Face? From Mayfeld s explanation of the terminal system, we expected the facial scan to be another layer of the verification process. If that is true, why did it recognize Djarin s face? The simplest explanation, of course, is that the scan is just a simple logging system instead of a security function. Which may mean Gideon will use the record of the Mandalorian s face against him. Will Djarin Really Carry On Under the Helmet? Although all the Imps who saw his face are dead and Mayfeld choose to ignore what he saw, we can t help but wonder how Djarin can continue to wear the armor after being seen. On the one hand, he s seen plenty of Mandos this season who do not live by the Way of the Mandalore. On the other, he s still a religious zealot who has yet to reconcile the Way with the evidence of his own eyes. Perhaps, like Mayfeld said, Djarin will do what he must to get Grogu back and, after retrieving him, will leave the armor with Boba Fett; in fact, that feels like the right note to end the season on. We ll know soon enough, though, as next week is the season finale. The Mandalorian streams on Disney+.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
