the new direction that we were going in. Suits Goes South in Spin-off PearsonGina Torres’ lawyer character Jessica Pearson is used to being a boss on Suits. But in her spinoff, Pearson, which sees her move to Chicago (where she isn t licensed to practice law), she ll have to start over as a fish out of water.  Jessica has to earn her family, Torres said. These are completely different people. It s a completely different world. She doesn t know them. They don t know her. They don t know if they trust me.  Check out what Jessica will experience in the first trailer for the new series, which premieres later this year on USA.Abby’s: Where Everybody Knows Your NameNBC s new sitcom, about a woman who runs a bar in her backyard, will naturally draw comparisons to another famous bar-set sitcom. But star Neil Flynn noted that the setting is really the only thing Abby s has in common with Cheers. Star Natalie Morales, who plays the titular character, welcomes the comparison, though. Any kind of comparison that we could have, or to Ted Danson that I could have, I’m very happy, she said. The setting isn t exactly similar, however. Abby s bar is outside, which meant that the show filmed in front of a live studio audience outdoors in Los Angeles, presenting a few unique challenges. The things we had to worry about were airplanes and helicopters; sirens being noisy, Morales said. But a fun fact is we shot this on Tuesday nights, as opposed to many multi-cams [that] shoot on a Friday night, because we shot on the Universal Lot, and Halloween Horror Nights was going on, and you would have heard the screaming. So we avoided that, which was nice. Abby s premieres March 28 on NBC.沙巴体育注册(Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic)Another year, another Academy Awards – but this was one we don t think we ll be getting over any time soon. The 92nd Academy Awards will go down in the history books, with Bong Joon-ho s Parasite becoming the first ever foreign-language movie to win Best Picture. And while Parasite s four wins were definitely major highlights of the host-free ceremony – not just because of Joon-ho s promises to get royally wasted after the event – they weren t the only big moments in a night that was marked by some genuinely funny presenters, megastar wins, and a feeling that the right people and movies were winning in the right categories.Recommended: The Full List of 2020 Oscar Winners and NominationsRecommended: The 2020 Oscars Red Carpet GalleryRecommended: The 2020 Best Picture Nominees, Ranked by TomatometerRecommended: All the Winners of the Golden Tomato AwardsThe moments began before the ceremony itself, with Natalie Portman s Dior cape making one of the few political statements of the night (with the exception of Brad Pitt s first remarks upon accepting his award and Joaquin Phoenix s speech, this was a fairly politics-lite Oscars). And then they kept coming thick and fast: incredible music performances, a superhero super team, and shock wins.Check out our pick of the best moments of the 92nd Academy Awards below, and let us know what you thought of the show in the comments below. Natalia Portman Makes A Statement With Her Cape Full of Female Directors(Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage) Those men might have been the ones congratulated by Issa Rae when the Best Director contenders were announced on nominations morning, but it was a group of talented ladies that was celebrated in a very special way on the red carpet on Oscars night. Natalie Portman arrived wearing a Dior cape that was embroidered with the names of a number of female directors who were snubbed by the Academy. Among those honored in Portman s gold stitching: The Farewell director Lulu Wang, Little Women director Greta Gerwig, Atlantics director Mati Diop, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood director Marielle Heller, Portrait of a Lady On Fire director Céline Sciamma, and Honey Boy director Alma Har el.Janelle Monáe Kicks Things Off With Mr. Rogers and Dancing DoppelgängersNo host doesn’t mean no killer opening musical number. The 2020 Oscars kicked off with Janelle Monáe – joined for a spell by Billy Porter – paying tribute to some of the year’s best films. Monáe entered the stage on a Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood-like set, pulled on a red cardigan, and sang “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, before transitioning to her hit “Come Alive (The War of the Roses) surrounded by dancers dressed as the Joker, Queen and Slim, Midsommar cultists, and other characters from the year’s movies. Most awkward moment: Monáe trying to get audience members like Leo and Kathy Bates to sing into her mic. Best moments: The awesome finale and the sight of a family of Us doppelgängers dancing on the Oscars stage.Brad Pitt Tears Up As He Reflects On his Career, Accepting His Award for Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%Brad Pitt was a lock for Best Supporting Actor leading into the night: The only question was – after a string of delightful acceptance speeches during the season – what would he say when he won? Pitt delivered, and then some, with a heartfelt speech in which he dedicated his win to his kids, celebrated his Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino (“one of a kind”), and paid tribute to his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he hugged on his way to the stage. Reflecting on his own journey through the industry, from Thelma and Louise to now, Pitt told the room, “Once upon a time in Hollywood – ain’t that the truth.”Animated Short Hair Love Makes History as Director Matthew A. Cherry Salutes Kobe Bryant“Representation matters deeply, especially in cartoons,” said Hair Love producer Karen Rupert Toliver as she accepted the award for Best Short Film (Animated) and became the first Black woman ever to win an Oscar in any animation category. Toliver was joined on stage by writer, director, and producer of Hair Love, Matthew A. Cherry, who said he made the film to “normalize Black hair” and drew the crowd’s attention California’s CROWN Act, which would protect against discrimination based on hairstyling. Cherry, a former NFL player, dedicated the win to the late Kobe Bryant, saying, “May we all have a second act as great as his was.”Screenplay Surprises: Parasite (2019) 98% and Jojo Rabbit (2019) 80% Win Big Against the Big GunsSome pundits – ahem, us – predicted these two wins, but safer money had Quentin Tarantino winning Best Original Screenplay for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Best Adapted Screenplay going to Greta Gerwig for Little Women. When Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won were announced as winners for Original Screenplay, the room erupted, with stars like Sandra Oh leaping to their feet to celebrate Parasite’s first win of the night. Joon-ho could barely contain his excitement, beaming as he stared at his award as if to say, “Is this really happening?”. Waititi dedicated his win to his mom – or, for Waititi, who signed off with the Maori greeting of “kia ora,” his mum – who introduced him to the book on which Jojo Rabbit was based, Caging Skies.MAYA RUDOLPH and Kristen Wiig Show Why They Should be the Next Oscar Hosts Though Billie Eilish Might not AgreeBy far the best presenters of the evening – and let’s be honest, perhaps of any awards show we’ve seen lately – were Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, who presented the awards for Production Design and Costume Design. They kicked things off with a bit in which they said they were too upset, too steamed, to carry out their duties, before revealing they were acting! Why? To show the likes of Scorsese and Tarantino that they had the range to be cast in their films, of course: “We just wanted them to know we do more than comedy.” In their intro to the costume award, they then sang a medley of clothes-related tunes that ranged from “Vogue” and “Lady in Red” to Sisqo’s “Thong Song.” Hilarious. (The only person who wasn’t into it seemed to be singer Billie Eilish.)Laura Dern Wins First Oscar for Marriage Story (2019) 94% and Pays Tribute to Her ParentsIf it is hard to believe that three-time nominee Laura Dern hadn’t won an Oscar before tonight, it’s even harder to believe that she is now the first and only Oscar winner in her family – a family in which dad is Bruce Dern and mom is Diane Ladd. With an emotional Ladd watching on, Dern thanked the Academy for “the best birthday present ever” and saluted her mom and dad. “Some say never meet your heroes,” Dern said, “but I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents.”Eminem Shows Up To Perform Lose Yourself, Because… Music?!(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Following a fairly earnest montage tribute to the power of songs in film introduced by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who was himself introduced by Anthony Ramos), Eminem took the stage for a room-shaking – and heavily censored – performance of “Lose Yourself.” The song, featured in 8 Mile, won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2003, making Eminem the first hip hop artist to win an Academy Award. Why exactly the song was performed tonight, though, remains something of a mystery. Still, the crowd got into it, with the likes of Kelly Marie Tran and Gal Gadot moving and mouthing along. The same could not be said for Martin Scorsese, who appeared to find the song a little, er, sleepy.Cynthia Erivo Takes the Dolby Theatre to ChurchNot much to say about this: Just watch and listen as Cynthia Erivo performs the Oscar-nominated Stand Up from Harriet. The performance was followed in the commercial break by a well-timed trailer for Genius: Aretha, the upcoming History event in which Erivo plays Aretha Franklin. The Cats Cast Shows They Have a Sense of HumorWearing two costumes that perhaps the filmmakers should have gone with for the actual film, Cats co-stars Rebel Wilson and James Corden presented the award for Best Visual Effects. As cast members of the motion picture Cats, said Wilson, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects. You ll remember that Cats went into theaters with its own effects unfinished.Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Ripley UniteGal Gadot, Brie Larson, and Sigourney Weaver had us dreaming of universe crossovers when they took the stage to introduce composer Eimear Nooneis, who led the orchestra as it played the snippets from Best Original Score nominees and in so doing became the first female to lead the orchestra in the Oscars’ history. The trio said they were going to start a Fight Club, and that men were invited, but Gadot warned: “The loser gets to answer questions from journalists about how it feels to be a woman in Hollywood.” Weaver added, “All women are superheroes.” Fittingly, Best Original Score went to Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker, who became the third woman to win in the category.Joaquin Phoenix Gets His Oscar For Joker (2019) 68%, Quotes Brother River In Moving Talk of JusticeJoaquin Phoenix was quick to ask the crowd to stop as it rose to its feet after Olivia Colman – hilarious as ever in her intro – announced him as Best Actor for Joker. Phoenix was visibly moved by the honor, and took the opportunity on stage to talk about the unifying thread between so many political movements – whether fighting racism or gender inequality or fighting for queer, indigenous, or animal rights , we re talking about the fight against injustice, Phoenix said. He went on to talk about our responsibility to all sentient beings and the environment and finished his remarks, choking up a little, as he quoted a lyric written by his late brother River: “Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.”Renée Zellweger s Comeback Is Complete It was not the most surprising win of the night, but it was one of the most moving. Renée Zellweger accepted the award in tribute to the woman she plays in Judy: Miss Garland this is certainly for you. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019) 98% Sweeps the Night, Becomes First Foreign-Language Movie to Win Best PictureParasite made history as the first foreign-language film to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars, crowning the evening with the night’s biggest award having already taken out Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director for Bong Joon-ho. When Joon-ho accepted South Korea’s first ever win – off its first nomination – for Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film) earlier in the night, he called upon the cast and crew of Parasite to stand and for the crowd to applaud their work, saying he was proud to be the first recipient of the award under its new name. He finished that acceptance speech in English, saying, “I’m ready for a drink tonight,” and later, accepting the award for Best Director, said, “I will be drunk until next morning.”During that speech, Joon-ho paid tribute to his fellow directing nominees, with particular affection given to Martin Scorsese, whose films Joon-ho said he had studied and inspired his love for film.Thumbnail images courtesy Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhat were your biggest highlights of the night? The No. 1 films for the past five weeks going back to the opening of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil have grossed a total of million. This weekend, Disney’s Frozen II surpassed that number. Tracking services went on the defensive after a few weeks of high-end estimates crashed and burned. So they went with a safe 0 million projection for a sequel to the highest-grossing Disney animated film of all-time globally. Audiences responded, “Who are you kidding?”King of the Crop: Frozen II Scores Third-Best Animated Opening of All TimeThursday night, Frozen II had the fourth-best preview for an animated film ever behind Incredibles 2 (.5 million), Toy Story 4 ( million), and Finding Dory (.2 million). Take into account that those were all summer releases with no school Friday morning and Frozen II’s .5 million Thursday is even more impressive. No matter what the season its 7 million opening weekend is mightily impressive. That is the third-best animated opening of all time behind summer releases Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory. The previous best non-summer animated opening was Disney’s Zootopia with .1 million and the holiday season champion was the November release of The Incredibles (.5 million) back in 2004. Five of the eight animated films to open over 0 million went on to gross over 0 million, a feat 2013’s original Frozen managed to accomplish after starting with just .4 million (now the fourth-best November opening ever after last year’s The Grinch). Frozen II’s global haul for the weekend was 0 million as it begins its billion-dollar box office run.Rotten Returns: Cop Thriller 21 Bridges Opens with .2 MillionProfit may be well out of its reach for director Brian Kirk’s 21 Bridges. STX pushed the cop thriller with Chadwick Boseman out of the summer into September, and then moved it away from their big success, Hustlers, into the November slot where it opened with .2 million. Movies this month opening between .8 million–.8 million have averaged a final gross of .1 million and have never grossed higher than Set It Off’s .5 million. That is not good news for the million production. Only four STX films have grossed over million outside of the U.S. and Canada in its five-year history (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, The Foreigner, Bad Moms, and A Bad Moms Christmas). The studio boasted two 0 million grossers in Hustlers and The Upside this year, but no other film has reached million. Countdown reached million this weekend. The Top 10 and Beyond: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Opens Modestly, Primed for Holiday GrowthTom Hanks as Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was not quite the immediate audience grabber that some of us were thinking it would be, but many still hope it will be a slow burn, gaining audiences over the holiday. Though a .5 million start does not give it much chance to be the success many believed it could be. The average gross for a film opening between million– million in November is just .18 million with the high-end achieved by Three Men and a Little Lady (.6 million.) Only four other films this month in that range grossed over million: Jingle All the Way, Scrooged, Bad Santa, and My Girl. The sixth-highest grosser was Men of Honor with .8 million, and Arthur Christmas (3,376) was the only film of the 30 on this list to open in more theaters than Neighborhood (3,235).Last week’s No. 1, Ford v Ferrari dropped nearly 50 percent with million this week, bringing its total up to just under million after 10 days of release, roughly the same amount that Dumb and Dumber To reached in 2014, though it only made .1 million in its second go-round. Todd Phillips’ Due Date earned about .1 million more by this same point, made about 0,000 less than FvF in weekend two, and barely surpassed 0 million domestically. A 0 million goal means, however, that FvF will need an international haul of 0 million to break even between production and advertising costs. It currently stands at .8 million. Meanwhile, Phillips’ Joker continues to climb the all-time worldwide chart with almost 7 million domestic and 8 million international for a total of .036 billion, passing Despicable Me 3 for 36th place overall.A large group of disappointments and outright failures unfortunately make up the rest of the Top 10. At .2 million after 17 days, Roland Emmerich’s Midway has grossed less than last year’s Disney failure The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which finished with just .8 million. Even with international assistance, Midway still has not reached 0 million, which is what its production alone cost and making it one of the biggest losers of 2019. Playing with Fire and Last Christmas are still on pace for what we reported last week around million and million, respectively. And if anyone on their holiday box office card had The Good Liar making a run to outgross Charlie’s Angels, you have an appointment in Vegas. The Helen Mirren–Ian McKellen thriller is not exactly lighting things up with .7 million total to date, but it did stay steady in 7th place, while the Angels dropped back to 9th place with just .9 million total and is unlikely to hit even million. Midway is still going to take a bigger hit on the books than Elizabeth Banks’ reboot or Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep, which fell out of the Top 10 in its third weekend with just million to date, so keep that in perspective.Todd Haynes’ Dark Waters made a decent splash with 0,000 in four theaters. That amounts to the 17th-best per-theater-average of the year and the 7th-best of launches in four theaters. Also in limited release, Amazon’s Honey Boy expanded into 44 theaters this weekend and grossed 9,000. That is a bit better than Whiplash moving into 46 theaters in its third week and grossing 8,313, but is less than Anamolisa grossed going from 17-to-37 theaters (5,364) and ultimately finished with .61 million. Honey Boy has made 9,677. Both Jojo Rabbit and Parasite lost screens for the first time in their runs. They have grossed .1 and .5 million, respectively. Lulu Wang’s The Farewell still leads all releases in 2019 that did not expand to over 1,000 theaters with .6 million. Both films are in position to pass it.This Time Last Year: Sequel Fever Took Hold with Ralph Breaks the Internet, Creed II, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of GrindelwaldIt was the Thanksgiving holiday and three sequels led the five-day stretch starting with the one-two punch of Ralph Breaks the Internet (. 8 million) and Creed II ( million). Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald finished third with .4 million and crossed the 0 million mark to 6.6 million; though the film would go on to make only another million total. The Grinch was right behind in fourth with .1 million, and Bohemian Rhapsody may have fallen back to fifth with .5 million, but it also crossed the 0 million line. One of the biggest bombs of the year in Lions Gate’s Robin Hood grossed a paltry .3 million and would eventually squeeze out just over million. From Friday-to-Sunday the box office grossed a total of 3.8 million. Add in Wednesday and Turkey Day and the 5-day total rose to 8.6 million, the largest ever for the holiday. The Top 10 films also averaged 64.8% on the Tomatometer compared to this year’s Top 10, which averaged 60.5% with critics. This week’s pre-Thanksgiving total amounted to 7.52 Million. On the Vine: Knives Out for ThanksgivingRian Johnson introduces a little mystery into the holiday season with the critically acclaimed Knives Out. At 97% on the Tomatometer, the film is the best-reviewed title to date to come out of the fall festival circuit and is expected to become one of the big crowd-pleasers to close out 2019. It grossed million at 7 p.m. preview screenings on Friday and Saturday in 936 venues. Melina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe’s outlaw justice road movie Queen Slim, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie-Turner Smith, is also doing well early with critics. Will critical support help influence its award chances more than its box office prospects for such a heavy drama during a more family-oriented time? The Full Top 10: November 22-24Frozen II (2019) 78% – 7 million (7 million total)Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92% – million (.98 million total)A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% – .5 million (.5 million total)21 Bridges (2019) 54% – .3 million (.3 million total)Midway (2019) 42% – .7 million (.1 million total)Playing With Fire (2019) 24% – .61 million (.62 million total)The Good Liar (2019) 63% – .37 million (.76 million total)Charlie's Angels (2019) 52% – .17 million (.94 million total)Last Christmas (2019) 46% – .04 million (.79 million total)Joker (2019) 68% – .82 million (6.93 million total)

What would you compare the movie to?“It’s like a southern-fried Richard Curtis movie. It’s Gothic, Actually.” Tom Beasley, Flickering Myth“Kind of Mars Attacks! as done by Cormac McCarthy” Ryan Lattanzio, IndieWire“Like a weird religious lovechild of 2012 s The Place Beyond The Pines and 2013 s Prisoners.” Callum Crumlish, Daily ExpressHow is author Donald Ray Pollock as a narrator?“Pollock brings a pleasing, smoky rasp of weary authority. He knows these venal, murderous, craven characters pretty well.” Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune“While an omniscient narrator does feature in the source material, here it feels heavy-handed and distracting, and ends up giving the final film an unintended comic element that isn’t quite in keeping with the deathly dark happenings on screen.” Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies“The result feels less like a worthy tribute to Pollock’s sanguinary prose than an odd, slightly irksome blend of movie and audio book.” Dan Jolin, Empire Magazine(Photo by Glen Wilson/Netflix)What about the killer on-screen ensemble cast?“It’s worth seeing for an intriguingly cast ensemble, authenticating the milieu as much as possible.” Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune“Though there are no individual standouts in the cast, they all turn in intensely committed work that tethers us to their characters’ snowballing predicaments.” Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction“A film that often feels like a sort of young actors’ Olympics; a baroque showcase for Gen-Z refugees of the industry’s biggest franchises to showcase their indie bona fides.” Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly“Every actor blends into the woodsy atmosphere with a sense of unease that permeates the air. No stars here, all character actors in service of the film’s unsettling calling.” Hope Madden, Columbus Underground“While the acting is all very good, there are moments when the cast members look bewildered, as if asking themselves how the heck their agents landed them in this gig.” Deirdre Molumby, entertainment.ieHow is Tom Holland? “The best thing to come out of the movie is seeing Tom Holland in a new light.” Deirdre Molumby, entertainment.ie“It’s a very different role for Holland to his energetic, peppy Peter Parker, but he brings a discomfort and a sadness to the character that fits him like a glove.” Tom Beasley, Flickering Myth“It s maybe most gratifying to see Holland so far from Peter Parker mode; his performance is delicately underplayed.” Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly“It is also Holland who is the most compelling to watch…because of the subdued intensity he lends to the character. He goes from placid and contained to explosively violent in what seems like seconds.” Gabriella Geisinger“Holland is perfectly withdrawn and quiet for so much of the film that when he is driven to action, it’s shocking and unexpected. He’s a combination of angst, guilt and barely contained rage.” Steve Prokopy, Third Coast Review “Arvin is made even more complex by Holland s guile and intrinsic internalization. He is heartbreaking, show-stopping, and entirely fantastic. His best performance yet. Callum Crumlish, Daily Express“Holland, sadly, doesn’t impress…[he] just isn’t right for this role. He seems too fresh, too clean to play such a haunted, violent character.” Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm (Photo by Glen Wilson/Netflix)And what about Robert Pattinson?“Pattinson’s turn as pedophile preacher Preston Teagardin is the obvious highlight.” Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies“Pattinson delivers another striking, film-stealing supporting turn with a hear-it-to-believe-it high-pitched Southern twang.” Matt Maytum, Total Film“For Pattinson, playing a domineering Bible Belt sleaze is a cred move (a sign that he doesn’t have to be liked), and he does a good job of it.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety“Only Pattinson evinces an understanding that irony may be the one workable option after earnest excellence has been ruled out…of all the stupendously bad accent work on display here, only his is as funny as it should be.” Charles Bramesco, The Playlist“Pattinson is clearly having a blast, giving one of the weirdest damn performances of his career…I thought it fit the often surreal tone of the film perfectly. Or maybe I just like watching Pattinson ham it up.” Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm“Then there s Robert Pattinson, whose genteel southern accent is more miss than hit, but whose skeeviness is palpable through the screen.” Gabriella Geisinger“I don’t really know what he’s doing here, besides taking a little too long with every line reading.” Michael Phillips, Chicago TribuneAny other standout performances?“Riley Keough, too, is a standout, adding layers and depth to a character who could easily have been a one-note sexpot caricature.” Tom Beasley, Flickering Myth“The film’s most stirring turns come from two young and gifted actresses [Mia Wasikowska and Eliza Scanlen] handed barely more than 10 minutes of screen time apiece.” Ryan Lattanzio, IndieWire(Photo by Glen Wilson/Netflix)Are there any other positive elements?“Campos and cinematographer Lol Crawley do a superb job of creating an ominous atmosphere, as if despair and tragedy are lurking around every small-town street corner, down every stretch of country road.” Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times“Credit should be given for a predictably excellent period soundtrack chosen by music supervisors Randall Poster and Meghan Currier.” John DeFore, Hollywood ReporterIs it too much movie?“If you stick with the lax pace, the slow-burn reveals are worth the wait.” Gabriella Geisinger“You can t say it doesn t keep you on your toes…But it s a long movie, clocking in at 140 minutes, and there are several points at which it drags.” Deirdre Molumby, entertainment.ie“There are times when the movie threatens to lose focus, but for the most part, this train keeps chugging on down the rickety tracks to its blood-soaked conclusion.” Tom Beasley, Flickering Myth“[Campos’] greatest feat may be that he was able to wrangle a story as ripe and unwieldy as Devil at all…and somehow still managing to land on the grim side of fascinating.” Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly“Like so many characters in this glum, shaggy ramble of a film, Campos gets lost in the woods.” Charles Bramesco, The Playlist(Photo by Glen Wilson/Netflix)Is the timing right for The Devil All the Time?“The Devil All the Time feel[s] like a movie tailor-made for the current hellscape we’re all trapped in.” Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm“It’s 2020. We’re already familiar with abject misery.” Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionThe Devil All the Time is available to stream on Netflix from September 16, 2020.
In another time the weekend would have been billed as the battle between the Joker and the Gemini Man. This is not that time. While nobody seriously gave the new Will Smith film a chance to dethrone the comic-book spinoff film, many assumed it could at least beat The Addams Family. It is a story about three stories at the box office this week and none of them involve Jexi. But the story of Joker is shaping up to be a bigger one than anyone truly imagined.King of the Crop: Joker Keeps on Smiling with Record-Breaking Second Weekend(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Warner Bros.’ Joker showed no real signs of a slow-down this week and set a new record on top of it. Initial estimates on Friday suggested a weekend just under million. As of Sunday morning the projections had jumped to million, which handily bests the .1 million that Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity made to have now the best first and second weekends ever for a film opening in October. With 2.73 million total domestically through 10 days it is also well ahead of Venom’s 2.1 million and Gravity’s 2.3 million. That second number is significant since Cuaron’s film is the highest-grossing October film of all time and Joker now finds itself just million behind. Todd Phillips’ film also joins an elite group of movies opening to million or higher and dropping less than 44% in their second week: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2002’s Spider-Man, Shrek 2, 2016’s The Jungle Book, Wonder Woman, Inside Out, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Passion of the Christ, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.Gravity was a marvel of consistency, never dropping more than 37% through its first seven weeks. Joker fell only 42.8% this weekend and could even challenge Gravity’s record-setting million third weekend. On the all-time 10-day chart, Joker is more than  million ahead of Phillips’ own The Hangover Part II (7.87 million), a film which fell 63.5% in weekend two down to .38 million and ultimately finished with 4.46 million. Gravity’s final domestic haul was 4 million, but now Joker is in a group of 63 other films with 0 million or more after 10 days (Joker is 62nd), and only five of those films failed to reach 0 million. The lowest-grossing film among them was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, with 1.28 million – which would be good enough to secure October’s highest-grossing film ever. Worldwide Joker is up to 1 million.Fresh Surprise: Addams Family Spooks Up A Strong OpeningUnited Artists Releasing, which has become the roof over the heads of Annapurna, Orion and MGM, had a good weekend, and their animated version of The Addams Family is going to be their highest-grossing film to date. Addams took home a .3 million opening weekend, looking to surpass UA’s The Hustle (.41 million total) in a few days and Annapurna’s Vice (.83 million) before its 10th day. This may be less than Adam Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania films, which began between million and million each, but is now the third-best October start for an animated film behind Shark Tale (.6 million) and Puss in Boots (.07 million). They went on to gross 0 million and 9 million, respectively. Only nine films have ever opened in October to less than million and hit 0 million (Meet the Parents, The Departed, Captain Phillips, Paranormal Activity, Argo, The Ring, Look Who’s Talking, Pulp Fiction, and American Beauty.)Rotten Returns: Gemini Man Continues Troubling October Trend

In top TV and streaming news this week, a stunning development as The CW loses a superhero lead and excited speculation on Timothy Olyphant’s The Mandalorian season 2 role. Plus, Muppets, Adam Sandler, and the week s top trailers.TOP STORYBatwoman Fans Are Shocked, While CW Execs Plan to Recast for the Series’ Season 2 Return (Photo by Frank Ockenfels 3/The CW)The biggest twist for the first season of The CW’s Batwoman series came off-screen: titular star Ruby Rose announced on May 19, two days after the first season finale of the series aired, that she would not return for Batwoman’s sophomore installment.“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season, Rose said in a statement. This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles … Thank you to everyone who made season one a success — I am truly grateful.”From a joint statement issued by The CW, Warner Bros. TV and producer Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions: [We] thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best. The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months. Berlanti was committed from the project’s beginning to casting a member of the LGBTQ community for the role of Kate Kane, Bruce Wayne’s cousin and the person who would eventually become Batwoman.(Photo by Elizabeth Morris/The CW)Though statements from both Rose and the producers don’t give any reasons for the actress’ departure, TVLine reports the decision to recast the role was a mutual one. Rose was reportedly unhappy with the long hours required of a network series lead, which made her a less than an enthusiastic co-worker.“It wasn’t 100-percent her decision,” a source close to the show told TVLine. “It was a breakup. She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned, if they parted ways. It just wasn’t a good fit.”The CW didn’t plan for Batwoman to return until 2021, giving the network plenty of time to find its new superheroine. The Mandalorian Season 2: Is Deadwood Star Timothy Olyphant Playing a Sheriff Again?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)When news broke last week that Justified and Deadwood star Timothy Olyphant would be part of The Mandalorian’s second season cast, nothing was known about his specific role. But Slashfilm is reporting this week that Olyphant will be playing a character named Cobb Vanth, “the self-appointed sheriff of the Tatooine-based settlement Freetown,” who wears a set of armor that may have once belonged to bounty hunter Boba Fett (who, as was previously reported, will be played by Temuera Morrison).Slashfilm cites the character profile of Vanth as revealed in author Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath series of books for what little is known about Vanth, including that he was once a slave who is now committed to keeping Tatooine free of criminals.Sounds like Seth Bullock, and Raylan Givens, to us, and a clever bit of casting by The Mandalorian crew. She was tough, she was athletic, she was a soccer player. Really physical, and she was just an all-natural girl and beautiful and cool, and we became friends. The only time I got connected in the whole movie with a punch or a kick [was during] the country club scene where Daniel comes in and gets the spaghetti on him, and then I laugh and Lisa punches me in the jaw. Every single time she connected, like, boom. Pat Johnson s like, ‘No, step back and swing.’ But I think every single time she hit my jaw. In fact, when Daniel falls down in the spaghetti and I m laughing, I m half laughing at the fact that she just hit me. Yeah, she was great.”“What Pat Morita taught me more than anything is not to take things for granted, to revel in the opportunity that you have.”Macchio: “I mean, with Pat Morita, everything he brought — I was truly witnessing the right actor in the right role, never taking it for granted, feeling a great responsibility, meaning him feeling a great responsibility playing a Japanese-American in that film at that time. And I always bring this information to the table, that The Karate Kid is the first mainstream major motion picture that ever dealt with the World War II Japanese internment camps. The movie is so often thought of as pop culture, ‘Get him a body bag,’ crane kicks, waxing on, and catching flies with chopsticks, but it also has all these other deeper elements to it, which is why it s, in my view, a great film. What he taught me more than anything is not to take things for granted, to revel in the opportunity that you have. There was an ease of working with him in those scenes. There s something relaxed about it. He would talk to John Avildsen or myself about the headband, which was called the hachimaki. Using that, taking it out of his pocket [to] use it as a napkin, or a handkerchief to wipe [your brow], but then you d also wear it, and then we d put it on for training purposes. Daniel always wore it for that.(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)All those moments and experiencing him teaching us [about] that culture, and wanting to pay homage and respect to the Japanese-American culture — Okinawan in this case — taught me that those moments of ease that we had just fed into the chemistry that we had that I didn t even know we had. It wasn t like I was trying to have good chemistry with Pat Morita, or he was really trying hard to be a good actor with me. It just organically was that way. And what I learned from that is when that just happens organically, it usually will translate. It just is one of those meant-to-be partnerships that was really special — something I ll have forever, and that we ll all have forever. It s really sweet, and I m the lucky one. That s how I look at it.”“Martin Kove came in character with a black belt on. For all I knew, he was the real deal.”Zabka: “I meet Martin Kove in character as Kreese. So I never met the actor Martin Kove. ‘Hi, I m Martin. I m playing your sensei.’ That was deliberate. Pat Johnson, who trained us for all the fight stuff, before Martin was cast, he played Kreese. And he trained me as Kreese, and he would be super intense and in your face and louder and bigger than even Marty was. He put the imprint of who Kreese was on me. And then when Martin Kove came in, it was in the dojo scene. …He came in character with a black belt on. For all I knew, he was the real deal. The scene where Ralph walks into the dojo, and I whisper to him that somebody s here, I mean, you could see that they had more of a relationship than just sensei. There was a personal relationship that happened, that s continuing now. But then when he says, ‘Sweep the leg.’ That moment, it was Marty Kove that caused that reaction in me, which was just to check him out. I mean, he was so intense and so big. A good actor s going to draw out the best from you. So he filled the shoes and sucked it out of me. And only now [do] I know Marty. I think if I knew him as I know him now, then, I might ve laughed in his face. No, I m just kidding. Just kidding, Marty!”(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)“It was like a dance routine, and we had it down.”Macchio: “It was about a week we shot the All Valley Tournament. I remember it vividly. We spent part of the entire shoot, say, three months, just rehearsing those fight sequences and our final fight. It was like a ballet. I mean, it really was. We were trained so well. We d be further apart. And as we’d get better and better, we had the pads on. And then we slowly but surely got closer and closer. There weren t a lot of changes. Some last minute, ‘Oh, we need this to be a little this,’ but for the most part it was like a dance routine, and we had it down. It was a great moment for me, because I win. The character wins the fight. For Billy, his character loses the fight. But for us to perform that the first time, six cameras, John Avildsen, who had directed Rocky, among others. You were in the hands of the best. And we filled up the arena with the extras, and they saw it for the first time. And we did it for the first time in front of a crowd, and that is a big part of the base, the spine, of what that scene is. I mean, there s all the other cuts. We got back and got pieces, but that was an amazing experience, just that. You could run into trouble with the amount of adrenaline, because you re just so jacked up, but we were so well-trained. It was a tango, and it was awesome.”(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Zabka: “It was electric. It changed from the rehearsals, where we were at one energy, to step It s like doing theater, I guess. You step out and there s the audience, and it just brings you up to a whole other place that you didn t expect to happen. So I remember doing it. I think we did the whole fight I don t remember shooting in blocks. We went from the beginning of the fight to the end of the fight. Like, the whole thing. It wasn t like, ‘OK, here s this kick. Here s that piece.’ I mean, we went out and performed this whole fight. In the breaks, I remember when they would say, ‘Cut.’ And there was a scene where Pat Johnson says, ‘Take a knee.’ Because he s hurt. And I m sitting there, and the cameras were cut for a moment, and I can look up and see the fans. They re like, ‘Boo, boo.’ And my mom was sitting in the audience, and she s like, ‘my baby!’ And I m like, ‘It s OK, mom. It s OK. I m acting.’ Yeah, but it was awesome. The fans, the people, the energy. There were actually some real martial artists there, real karate schools, and a real mini tournament happening in the background to make it look authentic. There s kids in pads sparring and all that. They had an actual tournament that day. It s kind of like a fake one, but real. They had real kids sparring with each other in the background. So the environment was authentic to what a real karate tournament would ve been like, and then we step out with our black belts. I remember walking out with my black belt, going, ‘I m such a fraud right now. If they only knew.’ I m walking in, and then they re like, ‘Who s that kid?’ I’m, like, the actor that has done this for three months, and I hope I don t kick Ralph.”“All of a sudden there it was, and it was great.”Macchio: “‘You’re the Best Around’ was, I think, a Rocky 3 reject. … Bill Conti did the score for both Rocky and The Karate Kid — spectacular, the underscoring. But I think that was a song that didn t make it into an earlier film. It might ve been from the first Rocky. What I didn t know was the music when Daniel is training in the water, trying to stand on one leg and the waves are pummeling him, I remember that day. Bill Conti was on set on the beach, and he was playing for Avildsen the type of classical music he was thinking of. And so I got a glimpse of that, which helps, because then when you re doing the scene, you envision the sound of it, because the score is a big component in storytelling.”“I got my movie. We don t need to shoot it.”Zabka: “Originally [the film ended with] the scene where Kreese chokes me out and Miyagi saves all of us. And then lights were out after we finished the tournament and John Avildsen said, ‘I got my movie. We don t need to shoot it.’ And I guess called Jerry Weintraub, and said, ‘I don t think we need to shoot that scene.’ He goes, ‘Alright, go home.’”Macchio: “What s interesting is at that point, I think, if memory serves— and it does get foggy after decades and decades — but I believe at that point, they said, ‘Listen, if we ever do one, we can always open a sequel with that scene.’ And I don t know why, but in my head, I remember hearing those words from, whether it was Avildsen, or Weintraub, that their thought was they were ahead of the game as far as starting the sequel, assuming we were going to have a hit.”ALSO WATCH: ORAL HISTORY OF COBRA KAI WITH RALPH MACCHIO AND WILLIAM ZABKAThe Karate Kid was released in theaters June 22, 1984
