Kominsky Method creator Chuck Lorre initially thought Seymour still looked too young for his senior citizen comedy.“I said, ‘Trust me, I can show you a picture of me with a gray wig,’” Seymour said. “Since I haven’t done any facial surgeries or anything like that, I am a 68-year-old, almost 69-year-old woman. I’m not that far off. I think I can age up. So that’s when he decided to let me play Alan’s love interest.”Arkin invited Seymour to brunch before they filmed love scenes together. He wanted to clear it with his wife first.“He took me to some old Hollywood place somewhere in Burbank which I’ve never been to which is obviously his favorite place where he knows exactly what he orders,” Seymour said. “He just wanted to make sure that his wife was okay with this. It was so cute. She and I became great pals.”Meanwhile, Lisa (Nancy Travis) wants to scale back her relationship with Sandy. She suggests they take sex off the table, and Sandy isn’t comfortable just being friends with a woman.“Well, they had not been platonic friends,” Douglas said. “Once you’re intimate and then say, ‘Let’s just be platonic,’ that sounds like that relationship is definitely going in a different direction. I guess, for a man, it’s his ego. He’s offended, and somehow he’d like to imagine that she can’t be without me.”Seymour agrees that because Sandy and Lisa have been intimate before, they can’t go back.“I think it’s very difficult when you’ve had a sexual relationship with someone to suddenly call it platonic,” Seymour said. “If you have those kind of feelings, you’re trying to stop them. I don’t think it works very well. There’s more drama in Sandy’s acting class too. Darshani (Jenna Lyng Adams) finally lets her wall down and reveals the trauma she’s been burying.“Those actors were very patient, my students, for the first season, not having a whole lot to do,” Douglas said. “I’ve always wondered, as I was watching them both as the acting teacher that I’m playing but also just as an actor, wondering how good they really were. [Adams] was really impressive to watch her in a powerful role.”Sandy ends up performing a scene from Doubt with Darshani. Sandy reads the role of Father Brendan Flynn, a priest accused of molesting a boy, while Darshani plays Sister Aloysius.“I thought about it as an audition in which the actress was auditioning,” Douglas said. “I was supporting her and trying to create both how it was staged and otherwise, to accentuate her and give her the best ability. I love the whole circle of her having to actually work with me and being intimidated and overcoming that, and actually just kicking ass.”Health issues continue to face Sandy in the second season, too. While Douglas relates, he hopes a possible third season can find Sandy with a clean bill of health.“Health issues become an integral part of your life and you deal with them accordingly,” Douglas said. “I’m hoping if we go to a third season that I will have passed through the mustard. I’m off to a new cycle of 10 years of good health. We’ll see.”After season 2 of The Kominsky Method, young Netflix binge watchers will hear Douglas’s voice in Green Eggs and Ham. Douglas plays the voice of Guy Am I, whom Sam I Am (Adam Devine) keeps trying to convince to try to the titular food.“You just have to be much larger than life than you imagine yourself,” Douglas said. “You really have to be almost cartoonish-like in your voiceover for it to match with the characters. Although I like Guy because he’s such a nasty guy; he’s so pessimistic about everything, so that part is sort of fun.”Douglas had not heard of Marvel’s plans for the animated What If…? series, in which a few MCU stars will provide the voices of their live-action characters in one-off stories speculating on alternate histories of their adventures. Douglas wants in.“I don’t even know the What If series,” Douglas said. “Let me call my agent when we get out of here.”The Kominsky Method season 2 premieres Friday, October 25 on Netflix.

(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)This fall marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Zombieland, the well-reviewed horror comedy that entertained while instructing how to survive a zombie apocalypse. This fall will also see the long-awaited release of the hit movie’s sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap. That’s right, it’s time to nut up or shut up again and follow our favorite city-named characters as they re-kill some undead and maybe even search for more Twinkies. What’s in store for Columbus and the rest of the gang? What have they been up to this past decade? Will they accidentally murder anymore Hollywood icons? Here’s everything we know about the follow-up so far. What s Taken So Long?(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Ten years is a long wait for a sequel to a movie as popular as Zombieland, which grossed more than 0 million worldwide back in 2009. Everyone seemed ready to do another one soon afterward, but the usual Hollywood hurdles got in the way, some of them rather positive. The filmmakers and cast have all had a good and busy decade since the release of the original.Jesse Eisenberg became an Oscar nominee. Woody Harrelson, who had previously been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, earned a couple more nominations for Best Supporting Actor. Emma Stone was not only nominated for two Oscars herself, but actually won one for Best Actress in 2016, and she was just nominated for a third time. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick hit it big with Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Director Ruben Fleischer did a few more movies, including last year’s box office hit Venom, and a lot of television.(Photo by Official Zombieland Twitter)As it turns out, this was perfect timing for the cast of Zombieland to return for a sequel, if only for the fact that they could promote the project through a popular meme. On January 29, the official Zombieland Twitter account revealed the new title for the sequel in a tweet that also featured a new poster, with Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone, and Breslin recreating the one-sheet for the original. The image of them all older — and in Breslin’s case, taller — is a perfect entry in the #10YearChallenge trend of comparing how we look now with our 2009 selves. Also, this isn’t the first return to Zombieland. Back in 2013, Amazon Studios debuted a pilot for Zombieland: The TV Series alongside 13 other pilots and asked viewers to help decide which series would be picked up. Unfortunately, fans weren’t into the small-screen version of Zombieland, which was scripted by Reese and Wernick but featured a new cast, and Amazon opted not to produce any more episodes. “You guys successfully hated it out of existence,” Reese tweeted at the time.Everyone Is Excited to Be Back(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Despite all the success and elevated prestige the cast and creators have experienced in the last decade, everyone is back on board for this crazy ride. Eisenberg, Harrelson, Stone, and Breslin will reprise their respective roles as Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock. And Fleischer is again at the helm, directing another script by Reese and Wernick, who are this time joined by The Expendables writer Dave Callaham. When Sony greenlit the sequel last summer, studio president Sanford Panitch said of the reunion: “No one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”Fleischer himself also spoke excitedly to Fandango last fall as he was prepping for the sequel. “I m thrilled,” he said. “I’ve been scouting and storyboarding and getting it going, and to get to work with that cast again is just an absolute dream come true. It s been really exciting starting to think about that movie, and to get to work with Emma, Jesse, Woody, and Abigail once again is truly a dream come true. Yeah, we re just at the very early stages, but we have an amazing script, and we re going to start shooting in Georgia in January.” Whatever the full synopsis and cast list entails, they’re up and running as of now filming began for Zombieland: Double Tap on January 21, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia.New Locations, New Friends, and New Zombies(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)What is the foursome up to this time around? The plot is being kept under wraps, of course, but does it really matter what the story is? All a Zombieland sequel needs to have is more hilarious zombie action and horror — not too complicated. We do know that Zombieland: Double Tap will involve another trek through the United States of Zombieland, however, this time taking the gang from the White House to the former American heartland. The film will also feature some new players in the game of zombie bashing, and yes, they’re also all nicknamed after places special to them. Rising star Zoey Deutch is Madison. Avan Jogia (TV’s Victorious) is a bad boy musician named Berkeley. And Rosario Dawson is Nevada. Hopefully we learn why her moniker is an entire state rather than a city.According to sparse details spreading about the premise of the sequel, Berkeley will be a love interest for Breslin’s Little Rock, who has separated from the rest of her group, and Nevada is a zombie hunter who connects with Eisenberg’s Columbus after some drama between him and Stone s Wichita further splits up the original cast.(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Meanwhile, as the four main characters have managed to stay alive for a decade by hunkering down in the presidential home, the hordes outside have also been surviving. According to reports of the plot, the gang will be facing “new kinds of zombies,” including smarter and stealthier varieties. I mean, it s been 10 years, so who knows what the world will look like at this point? Fleischer hinted to Fandango last fall. While it’s unconfirmed if Bill Murray will also return for the sequel as “himself,” rumor has it that his old Ghostbusters co-star and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Dan Aykroyd will make a cameo this time around as “Dan Aykroyd.” Would that mean we could look forward to Ernie Hudson or Sigourney Weaver in Zombieland 3?It ll Be Worth the Wait(Photo by Sony/Columbia Pictures)Ten years is a long time to wait for a sequel, and anticipation has just been building and building. Will it meet our expectations? Certainly there’s no pleasing everyone, but the decade delay has hopefully been for the best. Fleischer thinks so, as he told LRM last month: I think collectively we all felt very strongly that the only circumstance we’d be willing to make the movie is if it’s as good or better than the original. And none of us were willing to compromise on the quality of the movie. We worked on the script real hard to make sure that it was up to par with the original. And so, that was just a stipulation that we were all completely on the same page about. I’m proud to say I think our script is really great, in that the movie will be as good as the original if not better, and that’s why we’re all back. Zombieland: Double Tap  is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 11, 2019.亚博全站登录What it is: This psycho-thriller set in a more high-tech, high-indebted version of our own world follows two strangers coping with their own demons – Emma Stone’s Annie is an addict; Jonah Hill’s Owen is schizophrenic – who meet during a three-day clinical trial that doesn’t go according to plan. What is the major malfunction: Fantasies become heightened as Annie and Owen (and the audience) lose track of what’s real and what’s a dream-like simulation.Who’s responsible: Cary Joji Fukunaga and novelist/TV writer Patrick Somerville adapted the Netflix miniseries from a Norwegian program. Other stars include Justin Theroux, Sonoya Mizuno, Gabriel Byrne, and Sally Field.

Falling in line with most other live events this year, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival — the most prestigious gathering dedicated entirely to the wide-ranging medium — was forced to go online. Though nothing can replace the energy of a festival attended in person, the silver lining was that fans and industry professionals had the opportunity to watch the majority of the films in competition and multiple panels, all of which would have taken place in the festival s namesake French city, from anywhere the world. This year, Annecy’s two feature film competitions, L officielle and Contrechamp, as well as its Work In Progress selection, featured a mix of new projects from prominent directors and productions from regions that are rarely present on such an international stage. The dozen movies we’ve chosen to highlight in this list, most of which will be released in upcoming months, remind us how animation can tell stories in all genres and express complex historical, political, and philosophical themes as deftly and insightfully as live action does.Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary (France, Denmark)(Photo by Gebeka Films)Legendary frontierswoman Calamity Jane, who didn t abide by any restrictive 19th century gender norms, comes to life in French director Rémi Chayé’s stirring new movie, which pieces together a riveting Western from episodes of her defiant childhood wandering, working hard, and asserting her freedom. As seen in his previous effort, Long Way North, Chayé is fond of producing 2D animation with a simple graphic style, both in character design and backgrounds, and brightly saturated colors. The wide-open land of the Wild West functions as a stunning backdrop for this reimagining of the strong-willed, American heroine, enhanced by Florencia Di Concilio’s country-inspired score.Chayé’s Long Way North is available on VOD here: FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, iTunesInu-Oh (Japan, China)(Photo by GKIDS)Continuing his prolific streak, visionary Japanese filmmaker and animator Masaaki Yuasa is currently in production on a new work set in 14th century Kyoto grounded on the classical dramatic art of Noh and biwa (lute) performances, which began during the Genpei War to honor fallen soldiers. The eponymous protagonist, Inu-Oh, is a skilled Noh performer who befriends Tomona, a blind biwa priest, and together they achieve the type of massive stardom equivalent to what we are familiar with in today’s pop culture. Manga author Taiyō Matsumoto (Tekkonkinkreet) serves as character designer to provide a singular aesthetic to this historical epic. (Presented as a Work In Progress)GKIDS will release the Inu-Oh in the U.S. in 2021. Earlier this year, GKIDS released Yuasa’s most recent movie, Ride Your Wave. The Island (Romania, France, Belgium)(Photo by Aparte Film)Romanian director Anca Damian reinterprets the classic fable of Robinson Crusoe to discuss the refugee crisis facing Europe today in a surrealist animated project that also happens to be a musical. Ambitious on all fronts, The Island takes place in a futuristic world where augmented reality allows Robinson to interact with his surroundings on a more profound level. Rather than a paper diary, a tablet becomes his preferred instrument. Mutant animals and eccentric characters, whose movements were based on a professional dancer’s choreography, will surely make for a visual treat, anchored by a topical message. (Presented as a Work In Progress)Damian’s most recent completed film Marona’s Fantastic Tale was just released in the U.S. on June 12 by GKIDS.Jungle Beat: The Movie (2020) (Mauritius)(Photo by ©Timeless Films)Produced entirely by Sandcastle Studios on the African island nation of Mauritius and South Africa’s Sunrise Productions, this CG escapade puts a sci-fi twist on the talking-animal trope. Originally on Earth to conquer the planet, a young alien, Fneep, begins to feels homesick and enlists the help of the jungle’s fauna, including a vivacious monkey, a grumpy hedgehog, and a kind-hearted elephant, to return to his family. Adapted from the television series of the same name, which was broadcast in over 200 countries around the world, Sandcastle’s first animated feature showcases impressive production value throughout.Available now on: Amazon, Google Play, iTunesKill It and Leave this Town (Poland)(Photo by Bombonierka)Polish artist and animator Mariusz Wilczynski lets the audience into his subconscious through hand-drawn hallucinations. Melancholic childhood memories and morbid ruminations about mortality materialize as lines on paper, accompanied by a rock-infused score. Wilczynski introduces us to his parents, and in turn to himself as well, at different stages in their lives and constructs an abstract portrait of a family that’s as striking as it is bizarre. Lo-fi in the most masterful way and idiosyncratic to a fault in how it interprets the human condition (with all its cruelty and tenderness), Wilczynski’s debut feature won’t soon be erased from your psyche. The Knight and the Princess (Saudi Arabia, Egypt)(Photo by Alsahar Animation)A co-production between Saudi Arabia and Egypt and the first animated from these nations to have an international presence, this seventh century saga follows 15-year-old knight Mohammed Bin Alkassim as he embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue women and children abducted by ruthless pirates. Blending 2D and 3D techniques, the team behind the film achieved a look that calls to mind classic Disney movies, even more so because of its use of memorable songs. Furthermore, the villain sidekicks, two clumsy djinns, will surely remind viewers of Pain and Panic from Hercules. It’s a culturally specific production with wide appeal.Lupin III: The First (Japan)(Photo by GKIDS)Created in 1967 by manga artist Kazuhiko Katō (A.K.A. Monkey Punch), Lupin III is an astute thief descended from French writer Maurice Leblanc s fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, and his globetrotting adventures have been explored over multiple TV series and films, including Hayao Miyazaki s 1979 directorial debut The Castle of Cagliostro. Now, over 50 years after its first appearance, the franchise evolves for a CG installment by writer-director Takashi Yamazaki. This time, the likable criminal and his dexterous accomplices must hunt down an enigmatic diary that could potentially resurrect the Third Reich if it were to fall into the wrong hands. Faced with the challenge of working with such a well-known property, Yamazaki embraces the 3D aesthetic to make it his own.GKIDS will release the film in the U.S. later this year.My Love Affair with Marriage (Latvia, USA)(Photo by signebaumane.com)After tackling mental health in her debut feature Rocks in My Pockets, Latvia’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014, animator Signe Baumane examines the neurochemistry of love and the unjust societal standards imposed on women. Through sharp observations and two dozen songs, viewers will get to witness the introspective journey of Zelma, a young woman searching for a romantic partner in Soviet times. To attain her singular style, Baumane and her small team constructed physical sets similar to those used in stop-motion animation and photographed them. She then animated the 2D characters on paper before sending them to be colored in Riga, the Latvian capital. The final result is marvelous. (Presented as a Work In Progress)Baumane’s Rocks in My Pockets is available on VOD here: iTunes, VimeoNahuel and the Magic Book (Chile, Brazil)(Photo by Carburadores)Latin American animation has grown in quality and international prominence over the last decade, and this Chilean adventure from director German Acuña is one of the most accomplished features to come out of the region to date. Inspired by legends from the Mapuche indigenous people, it follows Nahuel, a boy who’s afraid of the sea until he comes across a magical book and must rescue his father from a malevolent wizard. Impressive action sequences and polished rural backgrounds resembling those in Studio Ghibli’s catalogue enrich this family-oriented story populated with fantastical creatures. The Nose or the Conspiracy of Mavericks (Russia)(Photo by Annecy International Animation Film Festival)Part offbeat opera about a man whose nose leaves his body to become a powerful figure in 19th century St. Petersburg, and part satirical examination of how Stalin’s murderous regime imposed creative restrictions on music and art. Using a variety of mediums, from watercolors to cutouts on glass, veteran Russian director Andrey Khrzhanovskiy harnesses Nikolai Gogol’s surrealist short story The Nose and Dmitri Shostakovich’s adaption of that same work for the stage into an endlessly inventive and biting political satire. Anachronistic references, a nod to Battleship Potemkin, and live-action snippets that provide insight into the making of the film complete a dazzling package.True North (Japan, Indonesia)(Photo by SUMIMASEN)This computer-animated drama from Japanese director Eiji Han Shimizu captures the brutal conditions inside a North Korean prison camp. Our guide into this harsh underworld is 9-year-old Yo-han, who was sent there with his immediate family after his father’s disappearance. Through this young boy’s eyes we witness the worst and the best of humanity. Proving once again that the medium can do more than children’s content, the animation here helps the subject matter leave a strong emotional mark and enables the filmmaker to access an unseen reality. Simultaneously, we root for the hero’s escape and mourn for all the loss and tragedy he’s endured.Wolfwalkers (Ireland, Luxembourg)(Photo by Cartoon Saloon)Two-time Oscar-nominated director Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) returns with a new Irish wonder based on Celtic folklore. Co-directed by Ross Stewart, the upcoming hand-crafted vision unfolds in 17th century Kilkenny, the same town where their studio Cartoon Saloon is located, and brings to life the legend of the wolfwalkers, people with the ability to leave their bodies at night and experience the world as wolves. Breathtaking animation draws us in to the friendship between Robyn, the daughter of a hunter bent on taming the land, and Mebh, a ferocious little girl who lives in the forest, and how the former rediscovers the wildness within her.  Don’t be surprised if Wolfwalkers lands Moore a third Academy Award nod. (Presented as a Work In Progress)Apple TV+ will release the film globally later this year.

a novels). Something changed, however, when Taika Waititi (Thor: Raganrok, 93% Certified Fresh) signed on with Warner Bros. and producer Leonardo DiCaprio for Akira instead. The bad news, however, is that Waititi s fans are still going to have to wait almost two years for Akira, because the film is now scheduled for release on May 21, 2021. Waititi s film will reportedly be adapted directly from Katsuhiro Otomo s Akira manga volumes, and will not be a shot-by-shot remake of the anime. In related news, both Waititi and Netflix dropped out this week of the Bubbles biopic about the life of Michael Jackson s pet chimpanzee.4. The First Stars Movie Based On a Video Game is In Development(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Paramount Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Ever since we first heard that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies, there has been speculation that their films would be set in the Old Republic setting, some 3,600 years before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This week brought an unexpected wrinkle to that theory with the news that a movie based on the popular video game franchise Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is now in active development (separate from Benioff/Weiss). Instead, the KOTOR movie is being adapted by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, whose produced filmography includes Alita: Battle Angel, Martin Scorsese s Shutter Island, and the Netflix science-fiction series Altered Carbon. As with the two other Star Wars projects that Benioff/Weiss and Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) are working on separately, the Knights of the Old Republic movie is described as being the first of a potential trilogy. Kalogridis also now has the distinction of being the first female screenwriter to work on a Star Wars movie since Leigh Brackett cowrote The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. In related news, we learned more this week about Keri Russell s character in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as more about the Knights of Ren.5. Chip N Dale Live-Action Film, Courtesy of the Lonely Island(Photo by @ Buena Vista Television)With Disney now done with Dumbo and Aladdin, The Lion King coming this summer, and Mulan and Cruella coming in 2020, it’s starting to look like they’ll run out of classic animated movies to adapt as live-action films by the middle of the coming decade. Disney, however, might be way ahead of us, as this week brought news that suggests their next steps could involve adapting some of their popular animated TV series as well. Walt Disney Pictures has begun development of a live-action/CGI hybrid adaptation of the studio s popular Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers TV series. The original series ran for a relatively brief amount of time on The Disney Channel (1989 to 1990), but it then entered syndication, where it arguably left a bigger impact and found a larger audience. Akiva Schaffer, of the musical comedy team Lonely Island (along with Andy Samberg), will direct the Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie, which will reportedly have a meta angle that s not an origin story. It s not yet known if Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers will debut on the Disney+ streaming service or whether it will receive a full theatrical release.6. Michael Peña Might Get to Recap What Happens in The Tom Jerry MovieJoel MearesAfter he provided some of the funniest scenes in the two Ant-Man movies, many fans were disappointed to find that Michael Peña’s Luis wasn t one of the supporting characters who returned for Avengers: Endgame (maybe he was hanging out with Darcy and Goose). That was especially disappointing given that we still haven t heard of active development for a third Ant-Man movie yet either. Whatever s causing Marvel Studios to drag its feet on that might be to Warner Bros. s advantage, because that studio has cast Michael Peña as one of the human leads in their upcoming Tom Jerry movie (April 16, 2021). Chloë Grace Moretz will be the lead character, as a new employee at an elegant hotel where Peña s character is the deputy general manager, and an alley cat named Tom is enlisted to take care of a pesky mouse named Jerry. Tom and Jerry will be mute, as they were in most of their classic cartoon short films.7. Slow Your Roll, Sonic the Hedgehog: Redesign Needs a Few More MonthsJoel MearesIn a rare example of people complaining about a movie online actually having an immediate impact, earlier this month, The Weekly Ketchup reported that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting a CGI redesign for his upcoming movie following negative reactions to the first trailer. People quickly speculated that such a rework would probably require more time, and that proved to be a correct guess as this week Paramount Pictures pushed the release back from November 8, 2019 to Valentine s Day, 2020 (up against the third Kingsman movie). Jim Carrey is expected to look pretty much exactly the same as Doctor Robotnik.Rotten Ideas2. This Week in Remakes Pt. 1: Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson May Be Grumpy Old Men(Photo by @ Summit Entertainment, @ DreamWorks)Although Samuel L. Jackson did have small roles in both Coming to America and the comedy concert film Eddie Murphy: Raw, he s never costarred with Eddie Murphy in the last 25 years or so, the era in which Samuel L. Jackson is a mega star. If this week s news goes anywhere, that may change in the next few years, as both actors are now being named as the possible leads in the same film. That movie would be a remake of 1993 s Grumpy Old Men (63% Fresh), starring Jack Lemmon (then 68) and Walter Matthau (then 73). Eddie Murphy (currently 58) is already attached to star in this remake, and Samuel L. Jackson (currently 70) is reportedly circling the project. Unfortunately, the Grumpy Old Men remake currently looks like a Rotten Idea due to the multitude of Rotten Tomatometer scores for the remake s director, Tim Story. But it could be time for a turnaround.1. This Week in Remakes Pt. 2: Mel Gibson s The Wild Bunch(Photo by Patrick Redmond / © Vertical Entertainment )There s a common notion that the best candidates for remakes are films that were flawed in the first place. The idea is that revisiting movies that could genuinely be improved makes more sense than revisiting something that is generally considered to have been done right the first time. For example, 1939 s The Wizard of Oz is itself a remake (and not even the first one), following silent films that lacked the music that made it a classic. So, when a movie like 1969 s The Wild Bunch has a 94% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score and a spot on various Best Movies of All Time lists, you d think no one would ever consider remaking it. Those people would not be Mel Gibson. Warner Bros. is preparing exactly such a remake to be directed by Gibson, and negotiations have begun with three major stars. The potential stars for The Wild Bunch remake include Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), and fresh off HBO s Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage.Like this? (Photo by © Marvel Studios)People had waited long enough: Three new release dates due to the pandemic; 14 months since its original release date; 11 years since the character appeared on film to finally get her shot to headline a movie herself. Black Widow is finally here and on Thursday night it had a better preview night than Deadpool, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Guardians of the Galaxy – not to mention Justice League, Man of Steel and Wonder Woman. They could not wait any longer. Not even a few more hours until it dropped on Disney+ for a premium fee. Did that shutter its theatrical numbers over the weekend? Maybe, but with million for the weekend it is still the best start of any film since 2019.King of the Crop: Black Widow Off To A Strong Start, But Will It Go the Distance? When F9 began with .1 million in Thursday previews, theaters were back! So we were told. Its weekend number, though, while still a pandemic high was also on the low-end of comparable films to that preview tally. Black Widow just cracked the Top 40 all-time in day-before previews with a .2 million start on Thursday. Only two films had ever started with million and failed to hit million by the end of the weekend: Aquaman and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo was then joined by Man of Steel and Justice League as the only films on that list not to reach 0 million by the end of their run. Neither of those DC films had pandemic asterisks to impede their progress (only Tomatometer scores of 56% and 40%, respectively). Black Widow, Certified Fresh at 80%, is now the third film on that list not to hit million on its opening weekend and will most likely also join the non-0 million company as well. But, on the plus side, the movie has made over 5 million worldwide and, reportedly, an additional million in Disney+ Premier Access rentals. At least we have a new threshold now that the studio feels comfortable giving out numbers for their ongoing experiment. So, 0 million is the new 0 million and, as Black Widow is set to reach its first 0 million later this week, that milestone is looking possible. Traditionally, movies opening with million or more sail past 0 million totals; this is your regular reminder that only X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Fifty Shades of Grey started with -plus million and failed to reach 0 million. Still, one cannot help but feel as if the standards by which box office has been measured in the past are gone permanently. Releases like Black Widow allow theaters to breathe a sigh of relief with enough patrons coming to get some popcorn, but the streaming and premium access factors may be making these films more frontloaded than ever before. Prior to this weekend, the top five opening weekends of the year fell an average of 62.7% in their second weekends. (Three of those films were HBO Max/Warner Brothers titles.) In 2019, the top 10 films averaged a 52% drop and those openings were million or higher (or, higher than any film since – including Black Widow). Marvel’s film is going to have a shot to overtake both A Quiet Place Part II and F9 by next weekend and both of them have been exclusive to theaters. (The Quiet Place sequel will be available for purchase online starting Monday.) Of the 23 films that have ever opened between million and million, 13 of them did not have 0 million by day 10.The Top 10 and Beyond: F9 Races Past Global Record of Half a Billion Dollars(Photo by Giles Keyte/©Universal Pictures)F9 s drop of 53% from last week to .9 million marks the second-biggest third-weekend drop of any film still in 2,000 theaters this year. (Mortal Kombat fell 61.4%.) This puts F9 in close proximity to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (another franchise that was in decline), which grossed .7 million in its third weekend, had 5.8 million after 17 days, and ultimately grossed 2.5 million. Unless F9 pulls off the mere 16.3% drop that Tell No Tales did in weekend four, it will probably be right in line with the 0 million that film had on day 24. That is where A Quiet Place Part II stands as of this weekend on day 45 of its release. (F9 stands at 1 million.) Even with F9 beginning to creep up behind it, Krasinski’s film actually had a better third weekend ( million) – but at this pace Black Widow is going to surpass it before F9 does. The ninth entry in The Fast Saga can at least boast this week that it became first film during the pandemic to surpass 0 million at the international box office. A Quiet Place Part II currently stands at 5 million; the first film grossed 0 million worldwide. The newbies last week were knocked back a little. The Boss Baby: Family Business – still available to stream on Peacock as well as watch in theaters – fell 46% to .7 million for a total of .7 million to date. That’s right on par with what Stuart Little 2 had back in 2002, though it grossed .6 million in its second weekend. The CGI mouse film started to fall back further in subsequent weeks, which may give Boss Baby 2 a chance to align itself and make it up to around the .95 million that the Stuart Little movie grossed – far less than the original Boss Baby s 5 million. The Forever Purge similarly fell 46% down to .8 million for a total of .5 million. That is pretty close to the pace of 2009 horror movie Orphan, which had .5 million in weekend two and a tally of million. Orphan finished with .5 million. What Should Have Been: A Weekend With IndyIt was supposed to be Indiana Jones weekend, but the filming of the fifth film was put on hold until after the pandemic. James Mangold’s entry with Harrison Ford will now debut July 29, 2022.On the Vine: The Tune Squad Reassembles for a Thwack of NostalgiaThe next film to test the hybrid model of same-day theatrical/streaming release will be Warner Brothers  Space Jam: A New Legacy, as LeBron James tries to outdo what Michael Jordan did 25 years ago. That would be just over million at the box office with Bugs Bunny as his above-the-title co-star. The film will be in theaters as well as available to stream on HBO Max. Also debuting in theaters is Focus Features  Roadrunner, a documentary about the late celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain.Full List of Box Office Results: July 9-11, 2021

st episode, “The Long Night,” has now shattered both the Night King (literally) and ratings records (figuratively). According to the New York Times, 17.8 million viewers tuned in to watch the one hour and 22-minute Battle of Winterfell, beating the network’s previous record (set just two weeks earlier during the season 8 premiere). The season 8 premiere was the biggest telecast in HBO history until “The Long Night,” with 17.4 million viewers tuning in. It still holds a record, though: Guinness World Records has deemed it the most in-demand TV premiere ever (according to its analytics, at least, which takes into account “global demand” — whatever that is).Meanwhile, “The Long Night” cinematographer Fabian Wagner sat down with Wired and defended his choices against viewers who complained that the Battle of Winterfell was lit too darkly and they couldn’t see the action happening on their TV screens.“A lot of the problem is that a lot of people don’t know how to tune their TVs properly,” he said. “A lot of people also unfortunately watch it on small iPads, which in no way can do justice to a show like that anyway.”The episode was dark on purpose, he said, because of the show’s overall shift in tone to much darker subject matter.“We’d seen so many battle scenes over the years – to make it truly impactful and to care for the characters, you have to find a unique way of portraying the story,” he said, later adding that the darkness of the episode is also partially due to how people are watching it. “Game of Thrones is a cinematic show and therefore you have to watch it like you’re at a cinema: in a darkened room. If you watch a night scene in a brightly-lit room then that won’t help you see the image properly.”The Obamas Plan Their Netflix Empire(Photo by White House)President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama announced the first slate of projects they’re working on with Netflix via their new production company, Higher Ground Productions. They include feature documentaries, scripted series, adaptations, and family series: American Factory is an award-winning documentary they acquired out of Sundance; Bloom is a fashion-themed upstairs/downstairs drama set in post-WWII New York City that will focus on the barriers faced by women and people of color; Listen to Your Vegetables Eat Your Parents is a half-hour preschool series about global food; Fifth Risk is a docuseries based on bestselling author Michael Lewis’ book The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy; Crip Camp is a feature-length documentary about a 1970s summer camp for disabled teenagers in New York’s Catskill mountains; Overlooked is based on the New York Times’ column of the same name that tells the stories of remarkable people (notably women and people of color) whose deaths were not originally reported by the newspaper; and the last project is a feature film adaptation of David W. Blight’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom.Quentin Tarantino Explains How The Hateful Eight Became a Miniseries(Photo by The Weinstein Company)The extended version of Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 Western The Hateful Eight turned out to be a little bit more than a longer cut: It’s a four-part miniseries available to stream on Netflix that the director oversaw himself. Tarantino told /Film that Netflix actually approached him to create the new cut, which has about 25 or more minutes of new footage.“About a year after it’s released, maybe a little less, me and my editor, Fred Raskin, we got together and then we worked real hard,” he said. “We edited the film down into 50-minute bits, and we very easily got four episodes out of it. We didn’t re-edit the whole thing from scratch, but we did a whole lot of re-editing, and it plays differently. Some sequences are more similar than others compared to the film, but it has a different feeling. It has a different feeling that I actually really like a lot. And there was [already] a literary aspect to the film anyway, so it definitely has this ‘chapters unfolding’ quality.Hulu Plans Ghost Rider and Helstrom Series(Photo by ABC)Now that Hulu is a part of the Disney family (following the completion of the Disney-Fox acquisition the Mouse House is a majority owner, not just partial), it’s wasting no time in getting some new Marvel properties in development. The streaming service announced that it is planning two new live-action series based on Marvel characters: Ghost Rider and Helstrom. Gabriel Luna is set to reprise his role as Ghost Rider, which he originated on screen during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fourth season. But according to Variety, the Hulu version of the character will be completely different and have no ties to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s.Hulu has also ordered a new series starring and produced by Nicole Kidman based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s latest novel, Nine Perfect Strangers; new food-focused original series with David Chang and Chrissy Teigen; and a limited series called The Dropout starring Kate McKinnon as disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes.Additionally, the streaming service revealed a few fun statistics about the way users consume its content: viewers streamed more than 100 million hours of vintage TGIF shows in 2018; true crime drama The Act saw more viewership in its first month than any other Hulu Original series to date; and viewers streamed nearly 1 million hours of Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting in 2018.This Week in TV TrailersNetworks released trailers for some of the summer’s biggest series, including Hulu’s Veronica Mars revival (which you can watch above) and the upcoming third season of The Handmaid’s Tale, which you can watch here. One year after an animated Yeti film opened we get…another animated Yeti film. More on that connection later. For now, the domestic numbers may not be spectacular for Universal, but they did manage to grab box office attention for a week by taking the #1 slot this weekend. Big drops abound for last week’s releases, even as many in the top 10 seek some personal milestones.King of the Crop: Abominable Wins with Lowest September Debut Since 2013(Photo by Universal Pictures)Abominable was indeed the winner this weekend with a .5 million start. That is the lowest debut for a September release since the weekend of Sept. 6-8, 2013, when Riddick began with .03 million. This month has always been a better one for animated films than August has ever been with the first two Hotel Transylvanias and the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films opening between -49 million for the best four animated openings ever. But Abominable’s start falls behind Open Season, Storks, and last year’s Smallfoot. History has shown that an animated opening over million can still get you over million (as both The Boxtrolls and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole can attest) but that is not great for a million production like Abominable. Even Smallfoot (which cost million) grossed .2 million domestic and another 0 million overseas, and it still came up in the red. Abominable has grossed a total of million so far.The Top 10 and Beyond: Downton Abbey and Rambo: Last Blood Drop Significantly, Judy Aims for an OscarLast week’s historic #1 for Focus Features, Downton Abbey, fell 57% this weekend to second place with .2 million. No worries, though, as it now has the 17th best September total ever after 10 days with .5 million and finds itself ahead of both The Maze Runner and Eagle Eye, which grossed 2.42 1.44 million, respectively. We’ll see if it can maintain that pace through next weekend, but it is looking good that it will become Focus’ all-time highest domestic grosser. It is over 7 million worldwide as well. Also making a run for the 0 million finish line is Hustlers, which moved back up to third place with .4 million. That is higher than the .7 million that The Equalizer grossed in its third weekend, which brought its 17-day total to .8 million. Hustlers is currently at .6 million and The Equalizer finished with 1.5 million. Approaching the 0 million line is It: Chapter Two which held on to fourth place with .4 million. It has grossed over 7 million worldwide.(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Last week’s other big releases are not doing as well with their drops. James Gray’s Ad Astra fell 47% to .1 million, putting it squarely between The Lego Ninjago Movie and Resident Evil: Retribution after ten days. That suggests a final gross someone in the vicinity of -55 million. The -100 million budgeted film has grossed million worldwide to date. Then, over to Sylvester Stallone and Rambo: Last Blood, which fell even further at 55%, putting its total at .1 million. That puts the macho man just ahead of female-led hits Easy A and A Simple Favor, though Rambo’s second weekend is more than million behind nearly both of them, meaning their million grosses are out of reach. To come full circle, it is just a couple million ahead of Riddick which, like the fourth Rambo film, finished between -43 million.Roadside Attractions is having a pretty solid weekend themselves. First off they debuted Renee Zellweger in Judy in the first step to securing that Oscar nomination for her. In 461 theaters, the film finished in 7th place with million. Why is that a significant number? Well, only four other films since 2000 have opened between 400-499 theaters and grossed that much. Among those four were Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (.43 million), Closer (.7), Sicko (.5) and No Manches Frida 2 (.8). Only the latter grossed less than million, so this suggests promise for Judy s eventual expansion and becoming one of Roadside’s biggest grossers to date. That would make two of their films entering their all-time top five in 2019, along with The Peanut Butter Falcon, which, in a real upset, has now won the battle between the festival darlings of the summer. With million in the bank, it has now surpassed A24’s The Farewell from Sundance (.4 million) as the highest grossing fest acquisition. This Time Last Year: Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish Laugh It up in Night School(Photo by Eli Joshua Ade/Universal Pictures)Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish defeated the animated yeti for the top spot as Night School grossed .25 million to Smallfoot’s .04 million, even if the latter would go on to outgross the former. Lionsgate’s Hell Fest opened a month for Halloween and paid the price with just a .13 million start. Funimation’s anime My Hero Academia: Two Heroes was just in 508 theaters but still opened in 11th place with .38 million. While all the anticipation is on Greta Gerwig’s adaptation this holiday, there was nevertheless a 2018 version of Little Women, which opened to just 5,063 in 643 theaters. Night School represented 29.58% of the Top Ten gross of .14 million though the films averaged just 51.8% with critics. This year’s Top Ten grossed an estimated .17 Million and averaged 68.2%.
As movie theaters remain closed and studios continue to shuffle their schedules around accordingly, events like San Diego Comic-Con and the Telluride Film Festival have likewise made adjustments to their normal operating protocol to highlight upcoming films and keep fans informed. After directing both Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, Vaughn returned to comic books again with Mark Millar s Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 75%), the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and the upcoming prequel The King s Man. Perhaps ready to start another possible new franchise, Matthew Vaughn is preparing to adapt the upcoming spy novel Argylle, and he has recruited an impressive ensemble cast. It appears that the title character, the world s greatest spy , will be played by Henry Cavill (who s previously appeared in the spy movies The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible Fallout). Cavill s Argylle co-stars will include Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Catherina O Hara, and, in her acting debut, pop star Dua Lipa.Other Top Headlines1. GRETA GERWIG TO DIRECT MARGOT ROBBIE S BARBIE FOR 2023 (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Some movies can get announced, developed, and produced within a couple of years, and other movies languish in development hell for years or even decades (and some never do get made). One such example of that is the live-action Barbie movie, which Mattel has been developing since at least 2009. To put that in perspective, in 2009, there were only two movies released in what we now know as the MCU (Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk), which includes dozens of movies now, while there still isn t a single Barbie. For a while, it looked like Amy Schumer or Anne Hathaway might star in Barbie, but eventually Margot Robbie came aboard. Warner Bros. has finally officially announced that Barbie will indeed start filming in early 2022 at Leavesden Studios in London, under the direction of Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%; Little Women, Certified Fresh at 95%). Back when Amy Schumer was (almost) involved, the Barbie movie was to be a fish out of water story about Barbie coming from her toy world to the real world, but Margot Robbie (who s also producing) and Gerwig are expected to have changed the premise, although it s not yet known to what.2. GUYS AND DOLLS TO BE REMADE BY DIRECTOR OF CHICAGO AND DREAMGIRLS (Photo by Everett Collection)Another project that has been kicking around development for well over a decade is the idea of a remake of the classic 1955 gangster musical Guys and Dolls (Fresh at 91%), which originally starred Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. To finally get the remake going, TriStar Pictures has enlisted the help of musical director Bill Condon, whose filmography includes the Broadway adaptations Chicago (Certified Fresh at 86%) and Dreamgirls (Certified Fresh at 78%), as well as The Greatest Showman (Rotten at  57%) and Disney s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast (Fresh at 71%). Over the years, several actors have considered taking on Guys and Dolls, including Vin Diesel, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and most recently, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (and we should also note that since the movie isn t yet cast, it s still possible any of those actors could star in the movie when it eventually happens).3. MICHELLE WILLIAMS CAST AS HENRY VIII S FINAL WIFE IN HORROR FILM FIREBRAND (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)The life of England s King Henry VIII has long interested writers dating all the way back to Shakespeare, which has also resulted in dozens of movies about either his life or other people in his immediate orbit. Part of the fascination with Henry VIII has to do with the way he went through wives (spoiler: some were killed off), and now, Michelle Williams is set to star as Catherine Parr, Henry VIII s final wife, in a psychological horror film called Firebrand. The focus on Catherine Parr is a bit unusual, because Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour are typically the wives that both film and literature tend to focus on. It s also worth noting that Firebrand is described as psychological horror, which suggests that Henry VIII himself (who hasn t been cast yet) may be the film s villain.4. ZACK SNYDER IS READY FOR HIS OWN STAR WARS (SORT OF) (Photo by ©Netflix)Director Zack Snyder has risen to that rare level of fame where his name alone is a draw, as in Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 71%), though the irony of that title is that Justice League is obviously an adaptation of someone else s work. More recently, Snyder has been focusing his attention on projects for Netflix, starting with the zombie heist thriller Army of the Dead (Fresh at 68%) and continuing with the upcoming prequel series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. For his latest Netflix project, Snyder appears to be setting his ambitious sights on the stars, as he will co-write, produce, and direct a sci-fi fantasy adventure called Rebel Moon, which is being compared to George Lucas original Star Wars. Rebel Moon will be about a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrant called Balisarius, leading them to recruit a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand. 5. JAVIER BARDEM TO VOICE LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE IN 2022 MUSICAL (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Movie adaptations of children s books are perhaps not as frequently discussed as say, comic book movies or remakes, but Hollywood has been steadily turning to them as a source for children s films since in the 1930s (and The Wizard of Oz). The latest is the 1965 picture book Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by Bernard Waber, which is now in production as a live-action/animated hybrid for release next year (7/22/2022). The role of the titular reptile (coincidentally announced in the same week that Alligator Loki is all the rage on Twitter) will be voiced by Spanish actor Javier Bardem, whose big budget franchise work has included such movies as Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Bardem will also soon be seen as King Triton in Disney s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The songwriting team of Benj Pasek Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) are currently working on original songs for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.6. MAD MEN STARS TO REUNITE FOR FLETCH REBOOT (Photo by Justina Mintz/©AMC)For fans of 1980s movies, the 1985 movie Fletch (Fresh at 77%) (and its sequel Fletch Lives) might be synonymous with the film s star, Chevy Chase, but the character actually first got his start as the star of a series of several novels by mystery author Gregory McDonald. There have been attempts to reboot Fletch in the decades since, with perhaps the project that came closest to actually happening being Kevin Smith s adaptation of the first novel, Fletch Won, in which Smith was hoping to cast Jason Lee (TV s My Name is Earl), but it didn t happen. Instead, it s Mad Men star Jon Hamm who is reviving Fletch with an ada
