Because as of this Sunday, Wan’s film is now the sixth highest grossing December release after 10 days, behind five little films: Star Wars trio The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rogue One, as well as Avatar and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. All seven December films to have made 0 million by this point have reached the 0 million mark, and Aquaman is million ahead of The Two Towers. Peter Jackson’s film opened on a Wednesday, so that pace will tighten over the next couple of days. But Return of the King made .8 million in its second weekend and ended with 9.7 million. Aquaman grossed .5 million and is likely looking at a final gross in that vicinity, which would surpass both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman for second highest grossing feature film in the DC Universe behind Wonder Woman. Fathom Events held special single-night screenings on December 17, when it broke the company’s record with .3 million, and then again this past Thursday, when it broke it again with another .37 million. That was more than this week’s openers, Holmes Watson and Vice, grossed on Thursday with a full day of screenings. With .7 million in two nights it has made nearly as much as partisan documentaries, Death of a Nation (with a 0% Tomatometer score) from pardoned felon Dinesh D’Souza (.88 million) and Michael Moore’s Fahrehheit 11/9 (.35 million). Warner Bros. will open the film in a few cities on January 11, and you can expect it to rise from the seventh highest grossing documentary of 2018 into the top five – and maybe even higher.Rotten Returns: Holmes Watson (aka the Anti-Aquaman)(Photo by Columbia Pictures)Holmes Watson opened in theaters without being screened for critics. Hey, Disney did the same thing for Christmas opener, Tombstone, back in the day, too. How bad could it be? Well, it is currently just the third wide-release of the year to score lower than 10% on the Tomatometer after Slender Man and Death of a Nation’s golden doughnut of 0%. That is where Holmes was with its initial set of reviews, but folks were already in the midst of paying good money to see it on Christmas Day. Around .4 million and 24 hours later, some were already calling it a “commercial flop” on Twitter despite the fact that only four of 23 films to open on Christmas to more than million failed to reach million.That still would not have been enough to cover its million budget in domestic dollars, but it’s not like it was Mortal Engines or Welcome to Marwen this month; however, Holmes Watson’s audience numbers have been scaling down to its current Rotten Tomatoes score of 9%. Though .7 million after its first six days still has it pacing for somewhere between -60 million, its numbers are diminishing at the pace of Aliens Vs. Predator – Requiem, which finished with just .7 million after it opened on Christmas. So it will depend on international audiences to determine whether the film is “a commercial flop” or not.The Top Ten and Beyond: Poppins Bumblebee To Join 0 Million Club Soon(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Mary Poppins Returns just missed becoming the 26th film opening in December to reach 0 million in its first 12 days; though it will do so on New Year’s Eve. Of the films in its 12-day company that had between million to 7 million at this point, Poppins’ -million weekend is second only to Daddy’s Home’s .2 million. (Poppins is likely to fly past Daddy’s Home’s 0 million.) The next crop of films above them (sans Marley Me) are all 0 million grossers. So as long as Rob Marshall’s film maintains its current pace it should rise high enough to be one of the three highest grossing films of the season.Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse did join the 0 million club this weekend. At 3.6 million it is in the company of Catch Me If You Can, Les Miserables (2012), Into the Woods, True Grit (2010), and Unbroken, but its third weekend of .3 million surpasses all of theirs, suggesting the film is headed for north of 0 million — an estimate that could continue to rise with the word-of-mouth it is receiving.Bumblebee, with another million this weekend, is also headed for 0 million like every other film from December to have million after 10 days. Clint Eastwood’s The Mule, on the other hand, took 17 days to hit the million mark, but it is not out of the running to become the 34th film of 2018 to reach 0 million. For a film that needs around 0 million to break even, million seems to be the worst-case domestic scenario at this moment. As it is pretty closely aligned with the 0.7 million–grossing The Pelican Brief, there is still a possibility this will be Clint’s sixth film as a director to reach that height.While Holmes and Watson was grossing .4 million on Christmas Day, Adam McKay’s award hopeful, Vice, was gathering up .7 million and a 64% score on the Tomatometer. It has made million in its first six days and eyes somewhere around million final domestic gross, but is already Annapurna’s highest grossing film to date surpassing this summer’s Sundance pickup, Sorry To Bother You. Ralph Breaks the Internet has fallen behind the pace of last year’s Coco, but is still million ahead of Tangled, which keeps 0 million very much in the picture. It only takes Ralph and Poppins to break the single-year record of most films to reach the milestone in any year. Then there is Stan Ollie (89%), which opened on Friday in five theaters, averaging ,935 for a total of ,674. Aquaman had the fourth best average with ,497, and Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk was fifth, adding 60 theaters (for a total of 65). The anticipation around the show was immense, but no matter how much praise the show got for its mature themes and inventive animation, many saw both Avatar Korra and the show itself as a lesser successor to the tale of Avatar Aang.To mark the show s Netflix premiere, we re taking a look at how The Legend of Korra not only mastered all four elements, but in some ways improved upon its predecessor, enhancing it in the process, and brought balance to the world.IT TOOK EVEN MORE INSPIRATION FROM HAYAO MIYAZAKIWhere Avatar: The Last Airbender was heavily inspired by Asian cultures, landscapes and places, The Legend of Korra jumps forward 70 years in time and finds inspiration in 1920s New York City, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. The main setting in the show, Republic City, is experiencing rapid urbanization and extraordinary technological advances, with the steam-powered technology we saw in the first series giving way to electricity and even magnetism. Automobiles, airplanes, movie cameras, and even mecha suits become normal in the span of the show s run.But, this being Avatar, the setting is more than just window-dressing. The show takes a page out of Hayao Miyazaki’s playbook, particularly his film Princess Mononoke, to explore how rapid industrialization comes at the cost of the world losing its connection to nature. Like in the Studio Ghibli movie, Korra introduces a world that is so disconnected from its spirituality that giant spirits attack people in the second season of the show, bending went from a revered art form to a skill used for menial jobs and even pro-bending, a popular boxing-like sport.IT DID ORIGIN STORIES RIGHTEven though Avatar had a bigger focus on history and the past compared to Korra, the sequel series focuses more on mythology and the spiritual origin of the Avatar. Season 2 makes the spirit world and the Avatar s role as a bridge between the two worlds its central theme, and through it, Korra also explores the origin of the Avatar itself.The two-parter episode Beginnings, from the second season of Korra, is easily among the best storytelling in the entire franchise. The episode tells the story of the very first Avatar, named Wan, and how he fused with the spirit of light in order to battle the spirit of darkness that threatened to destroy both the physical and spirit worlds. Instead of simply using the episode to answer questions no one really wanted answered, Beginnings gave us a prequel story that added to the established mythology without contradicting what came before. The story of Wan directly reflects that of Korra: how by doing what they think is right, they end up creating more problems. The introduction of the light spirit as the cause of the Avatar s powers becomes a huge part of later seasons and one of the best additions to the world s mythology.IT GREW UP WITH ITS AUDIENCEJust as The Last Airbender’s audience grew up between the two shows, so did the themes of the show grow up and become more mature by the time Korra premiered.Korra transforms the subtext of the first show into text, making death an integral part of the story. There are several gruesome deaths shown on screen throughout the show, including a murder-suicide and the execution of a queen by suffocation — and it s not simply for shock value, but to show the consequences of death on the characters. Depression, PTSD, and grief become huge themes in the series, and Korra portrays this with respect to its younger audience, not shielding them, but making them understand the heavy weight of loss.Likewise, Korra isn t afraid to get political, especially through its excellent villains. Far from the sometimes black-and-white villains of Avatar, the show isn t afraid of making its villains sympathetic, or having Korra learn from them. The first villain, Amon, was the leader of a radical group who sought to bring equality to benders and non-benders, who are marginalized in the show s world. The second wanted to bring the world back into spirituality. Korra even dives into nationalism and how it evolves into fascism when left unchecked, leaving the audience to decide how much they d agree with such a leader, and how far they d go before realizing they are following the wrong person — a bold, yet very timely theme for an animated show.IT ALLOWED ITS HERO TO FAILIn interviews, co-creator Bryan Konietzko has talked about wanting Korra to be the polar opposite of Aang, a go-getter and hot-headed girl who s always dreamed of becoming the Avatar. Indeed, unlike the very Campbellian Aang, Korra is not a nobody who realizes she is a chosen one and grows to become more confident; she s the daughter of her tribe s chief who always believed she was special. What makes Korra special is how the show allows its hero to fail, repeatedly, and learn from her mistakes to become a better person.When her hot-headedness leads to Korra losing a big fight against Amon and nearly losing her powers, she spends the second season second-guessing herself and getting others to make decisions for her. When her faith in the wrong person backfired, season 3 saw Korra learn to trust her feelings and accept the consequences. Throughout the show, Korra fought and failed, but she always learned how to pick herself back up and became better because of it.More importantly, the show s more mature subject matter led to the third season ending with Korra in a wheelchair after losing a fight, and the fourth season saw Korra deal with crippling depression and PTSD. These are themes very rarely seen in kid s animation, let alone such a mainstream series as this, and it not only made Korra an exceptional experiment, but the character s journey adds gravitas to the world of the first show as well.IT HAD GLOBAL CONSEQUENCESGone are villain-of-the-week stories from Avatar, leaving Korra to deal with world leaders, bureaucrats, and entire Nations worth of critics instead.When she first arrives in Republic City, Korra realizes that being the Avatar doesn t mean she is instantly well-received by all. Because Aang had disappeared for 100 years and came back to a world engulfed in war, most of the people he encountered were happy to see him, help him in his quest and to accept his wisdom. Korra, on the other hand, realizes that the Avatar doesn t come before the local leaders, that getting involved in a Nation s inner conflict becomes an international incident with severe consequences, and that each Nation has its own way of dealing with issues and wars. This leads to the show exploring the fascinating idea that Korra finds herself in a world that has outgrown the need for an Avatar, that growing apart from spirituality means the world has no need for a spiritual leader.Likewise, Korra makes it very clear that the actions of its leading lady have huge consequences. When Korra deals with Amon and his Equalists ideals, Republic City evolves into the first democracy in the world. When Korra decides to leave the spirit portals open, spirits cross over and start living everywhere, and it restores an entire lost Nation. Just by being injured and out of commission, Korra s absence led to the rise of a fascist dictator that threatened to become the new Ozai.IT EMBRACED DIVERSITY AND QUEER REPRESENTATIONEven though Korra premiered in a post–Buffy the Vampire Slayer world, it was still rare to see a genre show with a female lead, let alone a female lead of color. But Korra not only pushed for diversity in its cast, it also gave us one of the most groundbreaking finales in an animated series.The series final image shows Korra and Asami walking hand in hand to a spirit portal, looking into each other s eyes with a deep emotion and longing that was beyond just a friendship, before drifting into the sunset together. The indication was very clear – these two women had a deep love for each other – and it didn t take long before the creators confirmed that the scene was the beginning of a romantic relationship.What made the moment so significant was not only that it was one of the first times a bisexual couple was shown on-screen on a children s cartoon, but how much it was built up. The show s last two seasons showed us significant glances, hand-holding, blushing, and other hints that Korra and Asami had a deeper relationship than any other two characters on the show. Not only did this image become significant in the context of kid s cartoons, breaking barriers for other shows to include explicitly queer characters and plotlines, but it also made the world of the first show richer by making it more diverse and lived-in.The Legend of Korra is now streaming on Netflix. Notable films: Heavenly Creatures | The Frighteners | ContactDigital effects powerhouse Weta Digital is responsible for some of your favorite movie characters and worlds from the last 25 years. Trust us: Gollum, Caesar, Middle-earth, Pandora. Chances are if it blew your mind, it started at somewhere inside one of the thousands of computers at in Weta s Wellington, New Zealand headquarters. It s a mammoth operation, with the Weta Digital team currently working on post-production for the Avatar sequels, Jungle Cruise, and the final season of Game of Thrones, all as Universal releases Mortal Engines – a showcase for the company s newest and most innovative work – in theaters this December. And yet it all began very humbly in 1993 with Peter Jackson s Certified Fresh second film, Heavenly Creatures, for which the director wanted to tinker with digital effects almost for the sake of it. He founded the company with Richard Taylor and Jamie Serkik, got to work, and would eventually change moviemaking as we knew it.Here, Jackson – who co-wrote the screenplay for Mortal Engines with Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh and is a producer on the film – walks us through the history of the company, from the moviegoing experience that turned him onto digital effects through to writing new programs for The Lord of the Rings and finally to the roaming predator cities that roam the Earth in Mortal Engines. In the early days, he admits, it was all about gnarly. What follows is a history of Weta Digital, drawn from an extended sit-down interview with Peter Jackson and Mortal Engines director Christian Rivers.SKIP TO: WETA MEETS TOLKIEN | MORTAL ENGINES“I really thought I was seeing a living, breathing, T-Rex.”  The one event that happened is… Jurassic Park happened. We were getting into Heavenly Creatures and I went to see Jurassic Park, and, you know, the Tyrannosaurus Rex – I really thought I was seeing a living, breathing T-Rex. I just thought, my god. Whatever the future of visual effects is, it s now gotta be computers. Jurassic Park (Photo by © Universal / courtesy Everett Collection)“We started on Heavenly Creatures with one computer – I think we still have it, it s a doorstop now.” We started on Heavenly Creatures with one computer, one single box. I think we actually still have it, and I think it s a doorstop now – we ve sort of got our memorial doorstop. But that was so bloody expensive and it took us forever to save up and buy. We ve got probably six or seven thousand computers [now]. Right up to Heavenly Creatures I d done some horror movies and things, and we d always done our own effects, which was all prosthetics and props and zombie stuff and all that. We had done it ourselves – I love effects, I d never wanna give them to somebody else to do, because they re part of the fun of filmmaking. “We did the effects really just for the sake of doing some CGI, so we d actually just start to figure it out.” To tell you the truth, we didn t really need any CGI in [Heavenly Creatures]. But, we used the film as an excuse to buy one computer, just to put our toe in the water. And we had a guy, one guy, who could figure out how to work it, and we got a couple of bits of software, and we did the effects in Heavenly Creatures really just for the sake of doing some CGI effects so we d actually just start to figure it out. And then on The Frighteners, which was the next movie we [did], we went from one computer to 30 computers. It was a pretty big jump. Heavenly Creatures “Cloth was one of the things that people hadn t managed to figure out yet – when you look at it today, it s pretty gnarly.” The big nightmare for us on that movie was to do CGI cloth, because one of our characters was a grim reaper-type guy with a flying black robes. So we had to do CGI cloth flowing. Cloth was one of the things that people hadn t managed to figure out yet, so, we had code-writers writing our code to do cloth for us. When you look at it today it s pretty crude, pretty gnarly – it looks like stretchy pasty vinyl, it doesn t really look like cloth. [You can] buy a piece of software for a [cheap] that can do far better cloth now. “It usually involves water or fire.”  First of all, [you’re] driven by what you have to do, you know? What is the result? We use a lot of readily available, not particularly expensive off-the-shelf programs [to create effects], but occasionally you do get something you would like to do – and it usually involves water, you know, splashing the water, or river water, or fire. That sort of thing that off-the-shelf software can t quite do. So at that point, you have to write your own software. Robert Zemeckis, Michael J. Like, we do Avatar a few years ago, and we wrote software to create grass, and trees, leaves, that can blow with the wind, that sort of stuff. As opposed to other characters on the drama — such as Jonathan Banks’ permanently exasperated fixer Mike Ehrmantraut or Giancarlo Esposito’s Gus Fring, the fastidious small business owner participating in an extremely long revenge scheme — Mando’s laconic cartel lieutenant Ignacio “Nacho” Varga is not seen in Breaking Bad. Although his character is briefly referenced in the original series in a way that suggests he does make it out of Saul alive, Mando is mum to say more other than “this is Nacho’s biggest season, and he’s very heavily involved both at the beginning and at the end.”He specifically spoke of Nacho’s relationship with his father, Manuel (played by Juan Carlos Cantu). A working-class upholstery shop manager who just wants his son to stay out of trouble, Manuel has already had some dealings with Nacho’s business associations — and was not too pleased about it.“You really get to see how deeply Nacho loves his father in the third episode [of this season], and you really get to see how hard their relationship is,” Mando said, adding that “[Nacho] gets his heart broken in every direction. It’s like his stars are so dim, and everyone seems to break his heart, and I think his sanity is questioned at times. Someone’s got to care. Someone’s got to say this is wrong. A dirty cop with his own guilt over his derailed father-son relationship, Mike’s time on Saul has been a penance as he routinely gets his hands bloody out of an obligatory need to support his granddaughter and widowed daughter-in-law.“Mike doesn’t put much value on his own life,” Banks told Rotten Tomatoes in an interview after the TCA panel. “It’s not bravado. It’s just, in many ways, a beaten man.”Mike becomes a regular presence on Bad, but Banks deadpanned that it’s not a given that he’ll stick around Saul because “they could put him in a coma.” He added that, although much of his screen time on this show has been spent developing his relationship with Odenkirk’s character, “any time you spend with a human being, you learn more, you like them more, or dislike them more. And that does unfold to a greater extent with Jimmy’s and Mike’s [relationship].”Plus, he said, he’ll be creating the backstory for Mike “until the day I die,” reminding us both that the character spoke of his own rough childhood last season and that we’d previously learned that he was a sniper in Vietnam.“My opinion? FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY SThis bizarre horror series, which pits players against evil audio-animatronic animals in a Chuck E. Cheese-like establishment, holds the potential to be one of the better game-based films in the pipeline, not only because the prospect of a robotic bear going on a murderous rampage sounds awesome, but because veteran Hollywood visionary Chris Columbus has been tapped to shepherd production. While there s no solid timeline for the project, the studio intends to kick off its ambitious, universe-expanding plans with a first installment directed by Sicario: Day of the Soldado helmer Stefano Sollima.QUESTIONABLEWe haven t heard from these announced movies and shows in more than a year.UPDATED: DUKE NUKEMWhile a John Cena-starring Duke Nukem movie had been strongly rumored in early 2018, its seems the adaptation of the over-the-top shooter may be headed back to the drawing board. Original studio Paramount is no longer involved with the potential project, but Assassin’s Creed producer Jean-Julien Baronnet has reportedly teamed with Gearbox Software to bring the cigar-chomping badass to the big screen.UPDATED: RESIDENT EVILConstantin Films Resident Evil reboot, which follows the six film Milla Jovovich series, is one step closer to shuffling into theaters. Johannes Roberts, breakout director of 47 Meters Down, is taking a stab at the .2 billion-earning franchise as the reboot s writer and director.UPDATED: GEARS OF WARRumors and speculation have swirled around a potential Gears of War movie for years, but it looks like the project finally has its writer in scribe F. Scott Frazier (xXx: Return of Xander Cage.) The game s head honcho Rod Fergusson has also stated the Universal pic won t be based on any previous Gears games, but will take place outside of the established narrative. No word on how this might affect Dave Bautista s chanes of playing series protagonist Marcus Fenix.UPDATED: GOD OF WARWith the formation of PlayStation Productions — a new arm of the studio focused on adapting the company s games to series and movies — things are looking up for a God of War film. Given that the Uncharted film now has a release date, and Sony s God of War game reboot was a huge success, Kratos coming to the silver screen no longer sounds like such a stretch.UPDATED: DEVIL MAY CRYThere s been no update on the long-rumored Devil May Cry movie, buy the adaptation may be headed to the small screen. In November 2018 Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar revealed he would be developing a new show based on Capcom s demon-slaying series. While he shared little else, Shankar added that he d personally acquired the rights to the property. Whether or not this means the series would join Castlevania on Netflix remains to be seen.DRAGON S LAIRWe were ready to declare this project dead considering how much difficulty creator Don Bluth has had in getting movies off the ground this century (after Titan A.E. buried Fox Animation Studios), let alone something involving his fantasy laserdisc arcade game from the 80s. But if a successful, 0k-raising Indiegogo campaign had anything to show us, it s that Dragon s Lair still has fans today. And that includes the creators of Stranger Things, who opened Season 2 with Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin deeply invested in the game at the arcade. The Indiegogo funds will go towards a Dragon s Lair prequel movie before Dirk the Daring meets Princess Daphne, and that s all the news there s been since last year, outside of Bluth s interview with SyFy in November 2017. Moviemaking is a long and arduous task and we re not entitled to status updates if there s nothing to report, but we re keeping this at Questionable status for now, since Bluth s dreams have a habit of being undercut by economic reality. If Dragon s Lair were to fall apart, not only would it suck for the charitable hopefuls who filled the online coffers, but also those 40-year-olds today who called Hawkins, Indiana home.CONTRAKonami announced they were teaming up with Chinese corp Starlight Media for a movie and TV show for their flagship run n gun series, even whipping up a logo teaser to demonstrate that this business was serious. But with Chinese money in movie production drying up or becoming more volatile (the Fan Bingbing disappearance has spooked the industry), this project is up in the air like so many spread gun powerups passing in the night.BORDERLANDS(Photo by 2K Games)Fans have been clamoring for a trip to the cel-shaded, planet of pyschos Pandora, and occasional talks and rumors have obliged in stringing hopes along. Has it all just been claptrap? Gearbox Software CEO/carnival barker Randy Pitchford gave a general update during E3 2017. Per ScreenRant s transcription of the interview: We’ve been developing scripts and the strategy that we’re on right now is, that it’s obviously all in the Borderlands universe, but rather than retell the stories that were in the game, we’ll create new stories so the films will have their own film canon. HALF-LIFEGabe Newell hosted a Reddit AMA in early 2017, and answered a question about a Half-Life and Portal movie with a to-the-point Yep. They re coming. Cool. Months afterward, ex-Valve scribe Marc Laidlaw released a thinly coded synopsis of what would ve been Half-Life: Episode 3, all but confirming the game will never be made. This has only soured the perception on how this franchise has been handled since Valve moved away from traditional game development, and with details so vague and far-between, this questionable project is close to being marked dead.PORTALThe question Newell fielded from his AMA also pertained to Portal, so he s claiming an adaptation is concurrently in the works.SPLINTER CELL(Photo by Sony Pictures)There hasn t been a Splinter Cell game in almost six years, but why let such a cool franchise name go to waste? Case in point: Tom Hardy has long been attached to play Sam Fisher, through various attempts of the getting the film off the ground. With the last update in January 2017, when Hardy was given a new script to read, and nothing since, one can imagine a Splinter Cell movie has been stealthily killed.THIEFSquare Enix is reportedly working on a fifth Thief game. That s a surprise already, but then there s the extra news that a movie is being worked on in conjunction with the game. With no news in the year and a half since, this one maybe have been absconded with off into the night.These projects are either officially dead, or we haven t gotten any updates in over two years. But considering these are all based on a medium built around 1-ups and extra lives, the door s open for future resurrection.BIOSHOCK I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose development hell! Despite its protracted public development, the Bioshock movie was apparently just eight weeks away from shooting. Gee, with the start date that close, there must ve been mountains of production material and sets ready to go, right? If you look at director Gore Verbinski s follow-up movie after Bioshock fell apart, A Cure For Wellness, you ll get some distinctly Rapturian vibes.ASSASSIN S CREED 2A video game movie starring Michael Fassbender, directed by the guy who made the Certified Fresh Macbeth? And with Marion Cottilard? What could go wrong? Apparently, lots, according to Fassbender himself. And when your main star publicly drubs the movie, that puts a damper on any sequel talk going forward. Oh, and also the fact that Assassin s Creed bombed with critics and audiences everywhere.FALLOUTBethesda s Todd Howard told The Wrap that there s no Fallout movie because nothing quite clicked, which meant nothing was ever announced in the first place. Any memories you have of a Fallout movie being in the works were radioactive fever dreams.THE LAST OF USIn 2016, Sam Raimi revealed why a Last of Us movie imploded: Sony and TLoU co-director/writer Neil Druckmann have differing opinions on what said movie should look like. (It s easy to speculate that one party would want to use Joel and Ellie, and the other wouldn t.) Turns out, Druckmann doesn t even want a movie to happen anyways.MASS EFFECT(Photo by Electronic Arts)An action-oriented space opera with moral quandaries seems like it would ve been a great fit for a movie, especially one bankrolled by a company with as deep pockets as EA. But alas, Mass Effect fans, no stranger to ignoble endings, may be waiting an eternity to see the battle against the Reapers on-screen, as no movie was ever formally announced. While developer BioWare promises that the series isn t quite dead yet, the aftermath of the disastrous ME: Andromeda reverberates still.WATCH DOGSThere s been no news on adapting the techno-thriller since 2016. And considering Watch Dogs 2 sold up to 80% less than the original, safe to say this one s been put to sleep.SPY HUNTERNo number of covers of the Spy Hunter/Peter Gunn theme can keep this high-octane espionage property alive. The last news was from November 2015, when Dwayne Johnson was associated with it. With Jumanji and Rampage, we think he may have gotten his video game rocks off by now.DEUS EX(Photo by Square Enix)There hasn t been any news about a Deus Ex movie since 2012, a year after comeback game Human Revolution came out. But surely the latest sequel, Mankind Divided, must ve stirred up the augment s nest? Not so fast: Mankind apparently didn t sell too well, and nobody at Eidos or Square Enix is working on a new game. Considering Adam Jensen s story was left incomplete at the end of Mankind Divided, they ought to focus on wrapping that up before dropping a Deus movie.DANTE S INFERNODante s Inferno was an obscure game (especially by publisher EA s standards), yet for some reason, a few people in Hollywood were insistent on turning it into a movie. After no updates were released since 2013, three years after the game came out, potential director Fede Alvarez broke his silence to announce there were still no updates. With 2020 on the horizon, could another non-announcement be in the works?ASTEROIDSSpaceships. Mass destruction. Explosions galore. Asteroids sounds like it would ve been a match made in vector heaven with director Roland Emmerich, who, at the time, hadn t directed a disaster epic in years. Alas, he passed on the project in 2015. Just as well: He directed Independence Day: Resurgence instead, and where would cinema be today without that?GRAN TURISMOWe re not sure what shape a Gran Turismo movie would take (even Fast Furious had to throw in international espionage and nuclear subs to keep things interesting), but if the prospect of one has been keeping you up all these years, bad news: The last time anyone s written about a GT movie was in 2015, and that was to float the idea that the whole concept had been sent to the salvage dump.ANNOUNCEDMovie and game studios are often eager to make fanfare announcements either prematurely or to drum up public interest, and then the project s never heard from again. These movies and shows could be worse than dead: They may never have been alive in the first place.UPDATED: JUST CAUSEConstantin Films apparently has big plans for Square Enix s open-world action series. On top of acquiring Just Cause s film rights, the studio has brought on John Wick creator Derek Kolstad to pen the script. Likely to have been welcomed to its doom as there have been no developments since.CENTIPEDEOld game properties usually get announced in chunks, as the movie rights are sold to studios in package deals. This was the case for Atari when they announced both a Centipede and a Missile Command movie at the same time.MISSILE COMMANDThe Cold War may be over, but America s got a whole lot of problems with other countries, so maybe a Missile Command movie is still incoming after its 2016 announcement. But don t hold your breath.FIREWATCHFirewatch was the most popular walking simulator of 2016 thanks to combining mystery, romance, and thriller tropes into an attractive package. Developer Campo Santo said in 2016 that a movie was in the works. And they ve since been acquired by Valve, so maybe things will move at a quicker pace. (Stop laughing!)FRUIT NINJAAs smartphones inserted themselves into everyone s pockets and purses, Fruit Ninja was one of those big viral games that highlighted our new world of mobile inanity. So it s no surprise that a movie was announced in 2016. It s also no surprise there s been no news since.METRO(Photo by 4A Games)Despite its very cinematic presentation, it took a while for the post-apocalyptic franchise to get its movie announcement. Fast forward to 2019, when latest game sequel Metro Exodus will be released in February, with no new updates on the movie. Fortunately, Metro is based on a book series, so the series may have a long shelf-life even after the games conclude.RABBIDSThe video game equivalent of Minions, the Rabbids, were announced to be getting their own movie in 2015. Three Robot Chicken writers were attached at the time.RENT-A-HEROAnnounced by Sega in 2016, with Hot Tub Time Machine s Steve Pink attached, based on the very obscure character. In fact, none of this hero s two games ever made it to the States, and the only way American gamers could ve encountered him was as a secret character in Sega Saturn s Fighters Megamix.SHINOBIAnnounced in 2016, based on Sega s long-running (but now dormant) ninja platformer.STREETS OF RAGEAnnounced in 2016. Sega s beat em up has a seriously dedicated fanbase, especially for one that hasn t had a new entry in 25 years. The wait (and all the fan games) paid off when SoR4 was announced for a 2019 release.TETRISThe Tetris Company was all too eager to announce the pieces were coming together for a movie, alongside an million influx of Chinese cash. But that was more than two years ago, and with the volatile market for money from the Middle Kingdom, the movie may have vanished like a well-placed L-block.

Few movie franchises maintain the level of perfection that Toy Story has. The first two installments of Pixar’s flagship film series have perfect scores on the Tomatometer. Toy Story 3, which was nominated for Best Picture, is close with 98%. Now Toy Story 4 is on its way to theaters, and initial reviews are pointing to another very high Tomatometer score (it s currently at 100%).Thanks to familiar friends, popular new additions, and another deep story involving the meaning of life, we’ll put to rest any complaints that Pixar is making too many sequels. Jim Varney stars as the latest Worrell in a bloodline that has been cursed long ago by a troll to get dumber each generation, until a Worell is born foolish enough to release the troll from its prison beneath an old tree. And the 1990 edition of the Worell-sapien is the one to do it. Yep, this movie has Ernest lore and backstory. Varney was a generous comic actor, ready and willing to tear apart his face and tumble around the camera in whatever context the script called for. Scared Stupid has fairly high stakes for this series (the troll turns children into wood carvings, and even Ernest s sole companion, Rimshot the Jack Russell Terrier, is lost). The movie s requirement that you actually take him seriously as a hero may have been too frightening for audiences, and that s what got Ernest kicked out of theaters. Imagine what joys the world could have shared together with him on the big screen, what kingdoms and alternate realities he could ve passed through with his indefatigable spirit and puckered twisting lips, what history he could re-write (you know they d give him a time machine at some point) had he not passed on into the sunless void, a.k.a. the 90s home video market.
