The film, which was originally dropped by Warner Independent after the studio doubted its commercial prospects, would go on to gross over 0 million worldwide, win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and make international stars out of leads Patel and Freida Pinto. It would be hard to match that kind of explosive feature debut, and for the next several years, only the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel cinematic universe films would come close to that early critical and box office success. But Patel came roaring back with Lion, the true-story drama that would earn him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nom, with the film itself ultimately in the running for Best Picture. The Certified Fresh Hotel Mumbai and Personal History of David Copperfield followed, and now Patel is getting career-best review write-ups for A24 s Arthurian jam, The Green Knight.Read on to see all Dev Patel movies, ranked by Tomatometer!

Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% The Japanese cyberpunk manga Battle Angel Alita began publication back in 1990, and when James Cameron got wind of it (via Guillermo del Toro, no less), he became instantly fascinated by it and began development on it as a passion project. Ultimately, after years of delays, Cameron found himself occupied by Avatar and its sequels, so he handed the reins over to Robert Rodriguez. The film centers on a scientist (Christoph Waltz) who discovers a deactivated cyborg (played in motion-capture by Rosa Salazar) in a junkyard and gives her a new body, only to realize her previous function was much more lethal. Alita: Battle Angel has impressed critics with its groundbreaking, immersive special effects par for the course with any film produced by James Cameron but it takes some of its narrative cues from better films that have come before. It s an eye-popping theater experience, to be sure, and if that s what you re looking for, Alita delivers enough entertainment value to keep you in your seat. Just don t expect to be blown away or even particularly engaged by its story.

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Deadpool 3, The Suicide Squad, a Spike Lee Viagra musical (yes, really), and a pair of ensemble thrillers. This WEEK S TOP STORYDEADPOOL 3 MOVES FORWARD AT MARVEL STUDIOSRyan FujitaniIt s now been over a year and a half since Disney officially acquired the film and TV properties of the former 20th Century Fox, which included the various Marvel titles that had previously been at Fox, like Fantastic Four and everything-X-Men-related. Although there have been the expected rumors and mentions at San Diego Comic-Con, we hadn t officially heard of any of the Fox/Marvel titles moving forward through the usual development process at Marvel Studios, but we now know which movie has that distinction first. Marvel Studios has officially hired the screenwriting sisters team of Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin (Bob s Burgers, The Great North) to start work on the Deadpool 3 screenplay, with Ryan Reynolds attached to reprise his role as the merc with a mouth. Reportedly, Marvel has been meeting with writers pitching their Deadpool 3 ideas for about a month, with the Molyneux sisters eventually pitching the perfect fit [Marvel] wanted. Although no premise has been announced yet, the character might be the best choice of all the Fox titles to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe first because of his frequent ability to break the fourth wall, both in the comics and in the movies (as in, he might be the character most aware of possible alternate realities, a la Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). It s not yet known if other Deadpool 2 co-stars like Zazie Beetz as Domino or Josh Brolin as Cable might also appear in Deadpool 3, or whether, for example, anyone in the MCU might notice how much Cable looks like Thanos. There is no release date for Deadpool 3, but given the various COVID-19-related delays, it probably won t be until sometime in 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.Other Top Headlines1. LADY GAGA WILL BOOK A SEAT ON BRAD PITT S BULLET TRAIN(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty Images)Brad Pitt has been attached for a while now to star in the action thriller Bullet Train (based on the 2010 Japanese novel Maria Beetle) for Sony Pictures, but this week, the film s cast expanded quite a bit, revealing it might be similar in style to 1970s ensemble disaster movies like Airport and The Towering Inferno. The latest addition to Bullet Train is singer-turned-actress Lady Gaga, who is probably the biggest star of the group added this week, but she s expected to have a smaller supporting role. Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz also joined the cast, but likewise, her role isn t known. Another superhero movie co-star, Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), also joined Bullet Train this week. Finally, there s also TV s Masi Oka (Heroes, Hawaii-Five-0), likewise in an unknown role. Other members of the Bullet Train ensemble will include Logan Lerman, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Marvel s Quicksilver), Brian Tyree Henry (from Atlanta, as is Zazie Beetz), and Andrew Koji (Storm Shadow in the upcoming Snake Eyes movie). Bullet Train will be directed by David Leitch, who s coming off a hot streak that includes Atomic Blonde (Certified Fresh at 78%), Deadpool 2 (Certified Fresh at 84%), and Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 67%).2. HE GOT GAME: SPIKE LEE TO DIRECT VIAGRA MUSICAL(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)First discovered in 1989 as a possible treatment for chest pain, Pfizer introduced the prescription drug sildenafil under the brand name Viagra in 1998 as a medication to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It may have been inevitable that we would eventually get a movie about the invention of Viagra, but few could have guessed that when we did, it would be a musical co-written and directed by Spike Lee. Lee will adapt the screenplay with screenwriter Kwame Kwei-Armah (TV s Walter s War, Elmina s Kitchen) from the 2018 Esquire article All Rise: The Untold Story of The Guys Who Launched Viagra (which you can read right here). (One reason the musical might currently be untitled is that the title All Rise was recently taken by a CBS courtroom drama.) The original songs and music will be written by the team of Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, the creators of the rock musical Passing Strange. In a statement too long to fully quote here, Lee addressed his excitement about this project by frequently using his Shift key: So Finally Going Into My 4th Decade As A Filmmaker I Will Be Directing A DANCIN’,ALL SINGIN’ MUSICAL Spike Lee Joint And I Can’t Wait. My Moms Has Been Waiting TOO!!! And Dats Da Rodgers And Hammerstein Truth, Ruth. 3. THE MYSTERY GENRE REVIVAL CONTINUES WITH NEW SAOIRSE RONAN MOVIE (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)Two of 2017 s Best Picture nominees (amid other nominations) at the 90th Annual Academy Awards were Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and this week, two of the stars of those films were announced to star in a new film together. Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, and David Oyelowo (Selma) have all signed on to star in an untitled murder mystery thriller from Searchlight Pictures to be directed by British TV director Tom George. The movie will be set in 1950s London, where a Hollywood film producer is trying to adapt a popular play until members of the crew start getting murdered, with Rockwell and Ronan playing the cops investigating the crimes. Whatever this movie ends up being titled, it seems easily grouped together with other recent movies like Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express as part of a whodunit revival, to which we will soon be able to add the Death on the Nile remake, starring Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, and Letitia Wright (Black Panther).4. SYLVESTER STALLONE CONFIRMED FOR THE SUICIDE SQUAD(Photo by Marvel Studios)Although they were only shown together briefly in the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 featured Sylvester Stallone, Michelle Yeoh, Ving Rhames, and the voice of Miley Cyrus as a team representative of the original 1970s Guardians of the Galaxy team.(It s a long story, but the team we know from the movies with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket, et al. wasn t introduced in the comics until 2008.) At the time, it was teased that director James Gunn hoped that Stallone and crew would appear again in a future Marvel Studios movie, but as it turns out, we won t have to wait for that movie to see Stallone in a James Gunn movie. Gunn confirmed on Instagram over the weekend that Sylvester Stallone has joined the cast of the DC Comics soft reboot of The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), although the nature of his role, which might be fairly minor, wasn t revealed. Stallone is joining a massive ensemble cast that includes John Cena, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and of course, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. It s not yet known when James Gunn will be able to start filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 for Marvel, but with the COVID-19 pandemic delays, it s unlikely the film could be released before 2023.On an Apple device? (Photo by Everett Collection, ©Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection, ©Paramount courtesy Everett Collection, ©Fox Searchlight Pictures)In the 125 years between the 1896 release of Georges Melies’ three-minute supernatural ghost story The House of the Devil and this week s horror film The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the horror genre has divided and conquered by telling stories about killers, monsters, ghosts, demons, genetically modified sharks (we love Deep Blue Sea), gaslighters, and Sam Neill going insane (Event Horizon, In the Mouth of Madness). What started with a three-minute story about a supernatural creature harassing people is now a multi-billion dollar enterprise that has produced thousands of horror films of all stripes. With the third installment of the primary Conjuring film series (and eighth Conjuring Universe movie overall) about to drop, we decided to hack up 1,000+ horror films into five principal subgenres to determine which of them has the best Tomatometer average. We used this handy flowchart that the horror-loving internet didn’t hate to define 1,038 horror films with at least 20 reviews into the following categories: Killer/Slasher, Paranormal, Psychological, Monster, and Gore/Violence. Why only five? We wanted to prevent a Russian nesting doll-esque situation in which we had subgenres of subgenres, like “monster movie musicals with a hint of angsty teenager elements” (think Anna and the Apocalypse). Here are the subgenres we used, with some examples to illustrate how we separated the movies:Killer (Halloween, Urban Legend, Black Christmas, I Know What You Did Last Summer)Paranormal (Paranormal Activity, The Others, Devil, The Uninvited, The Exorcist)Psychological (We Need to Talk About Kevin, Midsommar, Goodnight Mommy, Don’t Look Now, Creep, Berberian Sound Studio)Monster (The Descent, The Host, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Day of the Dead)Gore/Disturbing (Hostel, The Loved Ones, Green Inferno, A Serbian Film, Saw)We’re fully aware that there are a myriad of horror subgenres that have been left out there is no dark fantasy, splatterpunk, revenge, found footage, giallo, or horror comedy but many of these films fall under the five categories above. We also recognize that there are some films that would qualify for more than one of our subgenres, and in those cases, we went with the one that fit best. With all of that out of the way, here’s how our five subgenres ranked, according to the Tomatometer:5. Paranormal(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Average: 46%Number of Films: 257Fresh Films: 95Rotten Films: 162Definition: Films that feature ghosts, spirits, or religious elementsWith the likes of The Exorcist, The Omen, The Evil Dead, The Dark and the Wicked, Drag Me to Hell, The Sixth Sense, The Uninvited, and House on Haunted Hill within the paranormal subgenre, it’s taken a lot of Rotten films to drop the Tomatometer average down to 46%. For every Personal Shopper or In Fabric there are Rotten movies like Brahms: The Boy II, The Turning, Fantasy Island, and The Grudge (all released in 2020) dragging the average down like the Lamia demon did to unlucky folks in Drag Me to Hell.Of the 257 films we considered, 162 (63% of them) are Rotten, which ties with the Killer subgenre for the highest percentage of Rotten films. Adding to the Rotten average is the fact that 25 of the films, like Flatliners (2017) and the aptly titled The Disappointments Room (2016) have Tomatometer scores below 10%. We can’t pinpoint a specific reason why paranormal movies are largely Rotten; we just know that the subgenre has been haunted by low scores since 2000, as the average went from a respectable 54% to a Rotten 42% in the years since.4. Killer/Slasher(Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Average: 50%Number of Films: 188Fresh Films: 71Rotten Films: 117Definition: Films that feature killers who use bladed weapons (or similar) to murder/terrorize victimsWhile horror historians may never come to a full consensus on what the original slasher movie was, we can all agree that films like Peeping Tom, Psycho, Bay of Blood, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and Black Christmas aren’t bad places to start. Since then, the Killer subgenre has become home to classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The problem with the category is that it’s also home to the 32 Rotten sequels and remakes that were a direct result of their success; the 85% Tomatometer average of the originals isn’t enough to combat the 28% Tomatometer average of their less-than-stellar later installments. While every other genre has to deal with Rotten sequels, reboots, and remakes as well, they slashed the Tomatometer average of the Killer subgenre the most. These scores make us appreciate movies like Happy Death Day 2U, Red Dragon, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Cult of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, and Child’s Play (2019) even more, as these Fresh sequels and remakes managed to buck the Rotten trend. The 81% Tomatometer-rated Scream 2 in particular deserves some love; it had to overcome script leaks, reshoots, and a rushed production (it went from script to screen in just one year), and the end result is possibly the best slasher sequel ever.3. Gore/Violence(Photo by ©Screen Gems courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Average: 55%Number of Films: 72Fresh Films: 39Rotten Films: 33Definition: Films that feature excessive graphic violence throughout or build towards gratuitously gory conclusionsWhat makes the gore subgenre unique is its lack of super Fresh (90%+) and super Rotten (10% or below) films. In our data set, only The Loved Ones and Bone Tomahawk scored 90% or above on the Tomatometer, and only Strangeland (1998), Martyrs (2016), and the 2016 remake of Cabin Fever scored below 10%. It’s as if critics are afraid to universally praise films that feature graphic blood-dumping, but they also don’t dislike them enough to universally pan them. The category s Tomatometer average falls somewhere in the middle, as the majority of the films in our data set (53% of them, if you can believe it) are Fresh, but they aren’t quite bloody-good enough to achieve a Fresh average overall.Part of the blame falls on the Saw and Human Centipede franchises, whose 12 films have a 30.25% Tomatometer average and work against the positive scores of the brutal yet occasionally brilliant French films Inside, Frontier(s), and Martyrs. Even these “gore” classics didn’t set the Tomatometer ablaze, as they averaged just a respectably Fresh 68%; stepping outside of the horror genre bubble, this seems fair, considering their subject matter is polarizing. Takashi Miike’s bloody classic Audition remains an excellent example of gore done right; the film is violent, it’s directed wonderfully and burns slowly to a gut-punch finale you won’t soon forget.2. Monster(Photo by Everett Collection)Tomatometer Average: 58%Number of Films: 347Fresh Films: 191Rotten Films: 156Definition: Films that feature a monster (or monsters, large or small) hunting or killing/eating unlucky victimsWhile the monster subgenre isn’t Fresh overall, it’s loaded with wonderful films that feature genetically modified sharks (Deep Blue Sea), flesh-eating zombies (Night of the Living Dead), giant ants (Them!), and a creature who travels over 1,000 miles, slowly shuffling towards its prey (It Follows). Being that we included zombies, werewolves, vampires, aliens, and sea creatures here, it’s a loaded category with an impressive 347 films whose 58% average almost reached Fresh status, but films like the famously panned Jaws: The Revenge, a beautifully insane movie about a telepathic shark hunting down the people who killed its relatives, drag the score down. One of the most impressive aspects of this subgenre is that 48 of the 347 films (14% of the data set), including Train to Busan, Nosferatu (1922), The Bride of Frankenstein, The Host, and Let the Right One In, have Tomatometer scores above 90%, which proves that in the right hands, monster movies can be straight-up classics. The subgenre is also extremely flexible, as it allows for pure thrills like monsters eating coeds (Piranha 3D) and spelunkers (The Descent) just as easily as it can serve as a vehicle for thematic portrayals of consumerism (Dawn of the Dead), nuclear fallout (Gojira), and the dangers of toxic waste (The Host). Basically, monsters can fill in for any number of serious thematic allusions, or they can just be monsters.1. Psychological(Photo by ©IFC Midnight)Tomatometer Average: 69%Number of Films: 174Fresh Films: 124Rotten Films: 50Definition: Films that inspire dread or discomfort primarily by utilizing tone and atmosphere to dive into the darkness of humanityWith a 69% Tomatometer average, the Fresh psychological horror subgenre is the best of all the horror subgenres, according to the Tomatometer. With 124 Fresh films (a whopping 71% of them whoa) 35 of them at 90% or above on the Tomatometer  it’s the clear victor here (we promise we’re not messing with your heads). The most impressive statistic is that there’s only one psychological horror film with a Tomatometer score below 10% in our data set, namely 2011’s The Roommate. This subgenre is also home to the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man, which features Nicolas Cage running around in a bear suit. With films like Don’t Look Now, The Lodge, Unsane, Goodnight Mommy, Midsommar, The Invitation, Mulholland Drive, Black Swan, Creep, and The Babadook, it’s easy to see why it has a Fresh average. Directors like David Lynch, Ari Aster, Karyn Kusama, Jennifer Kent, and Darren Aronofsky have thrived in the genre by creating dread-soaked worlds full of mystery, murder, and people leaping out from behind dumpsters. Considering the overall data set average is 55%, the 69% average is excellent, and it s perhaps not so surprising when you consider that psychological horror films depend so much more on an effective atmosphere and the performances of their actors. They tend to focus more on unsettling viewers and rely less on visceral thrills and carnival-ish trickery to shock audiences, and that generally makes for films that achieve a longer-lasting impact.Which horror subgenre do you prefer most?

Ghcxuf in Nicole, idobi.com Audiences new to the work are about to be introduced to a darker interpretation of what it means to grow up in a family of superhumans. The Incredibles this is not.  — Alexandra August, CBR As much as I love the original Umbrella Academy comics, I must admit: the series is more coherent, so newbies to the story will feel right at home.  — Samantha Puc, The Mary Sue(Photo by Netflix)What s to love (or hate) about these heroes? It’s one of those shows where the characters are at their best when they’re all together, bickering and bantering, but the plot keeps them separated just for the sake of dragging out the big reveals.  — Sam Barsanti, AV Club The majority of The Umbrella Academy is marred by fumbled attempts at character development and stilted performances. The protagonists rarely transcend the broadest strokes as the Netflix series dwells on the same few character beats and displays of sibling bickering and mind-numbing romance.  — Steven Scaife, Slant Magazine There s plenty of good material to mine here, from Vanya s desperation for being loved, Luther s want for approval, Allison s insecurity, Klaus shielding himself from feeling, Diego thinking he has a point to prove, and Five untrusting of anyone else, in addition to the foster siblings collective parental issues. But the writing is too threadbare and inconsistent to bring that up in an affecting manner.  — Akhil Arora, Gadgets360 [Luther] is fucking boring, and that’s a problem. Through the first five episodes, he does nothing spectacular. He’s plain, he doesn’t go against the grain. He probably eats unseasoned grits. The women of this series seem to be the saving grace. — Kenneth Broome, Black Nerd Problems The actors succeed to varying degrees — Hopper and Raver-Lampman, who share a flirtation that’s both troubling and sweetly revealing of their mutual isolation, are probably the best of the bunch, while Page ultimately feels marooned by the dourness of her material and a character evolution that’s written in a muddled and unclear way. — Daniel D Addario, VarietyAction-fantasy, family drama, or both? The Umbrella Academy is a murder mystery wrapped in an apocalyptic drama with a wild plot which takes in time travel, a talking chimp and the end of the world. — Henry Northmore, The List The Umbrella Academy is ostensibly about superheroes trying to save the world, but they’re so caught up in personal conflicts that very little world-saving takes place. — Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, The Daily Dot The show may be wrapped in superheroics and action, but it’s really about a group of people who have to work through their painful pasts and realize that forgiving one another is far tougher than the bigger task (saving the world, I guess) at hand.  — Alex Abad-Santos, Vox The cleverest part of it, though, is that this isn’t really a Watchmen-style deconstruction of the superhero genre; it’s about a weird family that has drifted apart for various reasons and must now come back together, baggage and all, in order to save the world one more time. — Sam Barsanti, AV Club(Photo by Netflix)How s the tone? It’s pure comic book through and through.  It doesn’t care about being great nearly as much as it does about being fun and exciting. — Merrill Barr, Forbes Umbrella Academy embraces its comic book origins, balancing cartoonish worldbuilding and visual flourishes with a sincere emotional arc. The overall vibe is a lot like an adult version of Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events.  — Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, The Daily Dot It sounds melancholy in a Six Feet Under kind of way, and it can be, but the series also boasts a sardonic sense of humor to keep things light. Doom and gloom this is not. — Brandon Katz, Observer Its composition, like a giant dollhouse cut open, is reminiscent of a Wes Anderson flick (think a more emo, gothic Royal Tenenbaums), but there s little of that offbeat charm elsewhere.   — Akhil Arora, Gadgets360Final verdict? Critics can t agree. The Umbrella Academy offers something new and unique in an already crowded genre and is a rare example of an adaptation that might actually surpass the source material.  — Henry Northmore, The List After a while, endless stylization for its own sake comes to feel cluttered and, worst of all, dull.  — Daniel D Addario, Variety Basically: This is the apocalypse we’ve been waiting for! — Sherin Nicole, idobi.com Despite such an audacious premise, The Umbrella Academy quickly slumps into mopey mediocrity, unable to render any of the visual imagination the material practically begs for. — Steven Scaife, Slant Magazine The joy of Umbrella Academyis that you can never predict the path the show will take as a superhero-tinged TV show, it gets everything right. — Allison Keene, Collider 😈😈

bob体彩下载 While Marvel Studio pictures appear with a clockwork precision that only a worldwide pandemic could pause, Sony’s attempts to make use of the Spider-Man characters it controls have been less reliable. Amid multiple restarts, a long-in-the-works plan to make a Sinister Six movie, and a critical hack of Sony’s email system a few years back, it s no wonder they chose to ally with Marvel Studios to bring Spidey to the MCU.But Sony also continued to develop ideas independent of Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) trip to the larger Marvel world. Occasionally known as the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, the concept finally clicked with the one-two punch of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Venom. Both were commercial successes and proved Sony could mount a Spider-Man(-adjacent) film without Marvel s help.Provided, of course, they’re still interested in going it alone. Now, after its own COVID delay, the first true installment of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters begins with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. If the recently released trailer is any indication, it should succeed in similar ways to its predecessor despite a new creative at the helm (more on that in a moment), but will it truly set the, er, “SPUMC” reality apart from the MCU? Let’s take a look at what we know about Venom: Let There Be Carnage to see if we can discover where the film exists in the many Marvel Universes.Familiar Faces(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures)It is fair to say one of the primary reasons for the first Venom’s success was the surprising double act of Eddie Brock and the symbiote on his back known as Venom, both played by Tom Hardy; happily, Hardy was the first element secured for the sequel. Of course, these days, studios sign actors up for multi-picture deals just in case, but with Venom, Hardy’s return for Let There Be Carnage and an eventual third film is essential.Sure, Venom could find a new host. He has passed to others before, including Eddie’s ex-girlfriend Anne Weying (Michelle Williams), who also returns for Let There Be Carnage. Reid Scott also returns as Anne’s incredibly likable current boyfriend, Dr. Dan Lewis. And as the recent trailer made clear, Peggy Lu is back as neighborhood convenience store proprietor, Mrs. Chen – as it happens, she, Eddie, and Venom have worked out some sort of protection deal so she doesn’t get held up as often. Although, the trailer suggests that deal is still tenuous, as Venom is always looking to make a meal of the nearest non-Eddie human. And, oddly, that’s pretty much all the returning cast Sony could really import from the first film. Characters played by the likes of Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate did not make it out of that story alive. That said, there is one character who made a brief appearance returning for the sequel in a big way. Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady – seen for a moment in Venom’s mid-credit stinger – is the primary antagonist this time around. From the trailer, it appears his execution date is approaching. It also seems it will not go well, as it activates another alien symbiote called Carnage.(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Or, at least, that’s one interpretation. In the comics, Carnage was the disregarded offspring of Venom who found a kindred spirit in serial killer Kasady. Together they did plenty of damage and battled Venom, Spider-Man, and anyone else who got in their way. It will be interesting to see if this Carnage is also the offspring of movie Venom and whether or not his initial indifference to his child will be a point of contention between him and Eddie. That said, now that they share Eddie s impossibly large San Francisco apartment, there still needs to be some conflict between them.Behind the camera, the producing team of Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal – of The Amazing Spider-Man duology return, as do Hardy and Kelly Marcel as executive producers. The Fresh Hosts(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Whether or not you consider Harrelson a new member of the cast, there are a handful of other freshmen to the Venom family. Naomie Harris joins up as Frances Barrison, a young woman whose encounter with the symbiote known as Shriek will lead her to Kasady before too long. Stephen Graham plays Mulligan, reportedly a detective looking to link Eddie to Kasady in the hopes of finding the location of victims the killer chose not to reveal although, in the comics, Mulligan has his own symbiote issues to deal with. Sean Delaney and Larry Olubamiwo are also set to appear in smaller roles. Delaney even claimed his is a literal blink-and-you ll-miss-it moment. But perhaps the biggest name to join the franchise is not a new actor, but the new director. Due to scheduling difficulties with his commitments to Zombieland: Double Tap, director Ruben Fleischer stepped away from Let There Be Carnage. Sony quickly launched a search for a new filmmaker and found Andy Serkis.Yes, you read that right, the man who brought Gollum to life in The Lord of the Rings trilogy directed Venom 2. As it happens, Serkis began directing features with the 2017 biopic Breathe, starring former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield. The next year, Netflix released his second film, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle – which had the misfortune of arriving on the scene after Jon Favreau’s remake of the Disney animated version. Nevertheless, Sony and the film’s producers went with him because of his extensive knowledge of motion capture technology and performance.(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Backing Serkis up on screenwriting duties is Marcel, who replaces Jeff Pinker. The Saving Mr. Banks co-writer wrote the script after hashing out a story with fellow EP Hardy. Hutch Parker, a veteran of Fox Marvel movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan, is also an executive producer on the film. Other crewmembers include Breathe and Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood’s Robert Richardson as director of photography, production designer Oliver Scholl, and composer Marco Beltrami. This new company of talents will tell a further tale of Eddie and Venom becoming besties – in fact, Tolmach, Hardy, and Fleischer (before he confirmed his departure) all emphasized the buddy movie feeling would be amplified this time around. Meanwhile, they will also have to face the threat of Carnage, Shriek, and whatever other symbiote terrors may yet emerge as part of the plot. Thanks to Venom’s popularity in the 1990s and today, there are plenty of his fellow goo-monsters out there waiting for their chance on the big screen.Well, provided Venom doesn’t face Peter Parker first. The Madness of the Marvel Multiverse(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Eagle-eyed watchers of the Let There Be Carnage trailer took note of a partially obscured headline during a shot in which Graham’s detective character is reading the Daily Bugle: “ENGERS L IGHT M.” The potential meaning of the first word in that headline is clear Marvel superheroes exist in Venom’s world. But are they same Av- ENGERS we’ve come to love thanks to films like Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy? After a contentious renegotiation of the film rights to Spider-Man in 2019, it is unclear if Disney and Sony are chummy enough to share characters with more abandon. But at the same time, a 2020 trailer for the much-delayed SPUMC film Morbius (read more about that here) featured references to Spidey’s current problems in the MCU and an appearance by Michael Keaton as (presumably) Adrian Toomes from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Also, Serkis has said the characters in Venom are aware of Spider-Man, and more recently, Sony struck a deal to bring the Spider-Man films to Disney+, so the relationship may be warm enough for more cross-company cooperation.(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Oh, but then there’s the Bugle itself. Since the newspaper is part of the wider Spider-Man license, it did not appear in the MCU until the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where it was the name of J. Jonah Jameson’s (J.K. Simmons) conspiracy theory website. The Bugle s usual print dimensions and trade dress in the the Carnage trailer suggests we are still dealing with two separate film universes. To a certain extent, the Carnage and Morbius trailers are having a laugh with the asides to the MCU, but it is also possible a clearer narrative understanding will come to light once Spider-Man: No Way Home is released in December. Since that film will feature appearances by Sony Spider-Man characters like Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), and further references to the Multiverse, it is not outside the realm of possibility that Let There Be Carnage’s relative distance from the MCU will be explored in some way. At the moment, we’re inclined to believe Eddie and Venom’s adventure occur in a universe or two away from the prime MCU reality, but it could be the place Peter ends up calling home. That’s probably a good thing, as there are five other live-action Spider-Man related projects at Sony in need of a webslinger to tie the whole thing together. As for now, Let There Be Carnage’s references to Spider-Men and the Avengers will probably remain joke fodder.Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases on September 24, 2021.Thumbnail image by Sony Pictures EntertainmentOn an Apple device?
