Book Club (which scored 54% and opened to .5 million) look pretty dashed. It is the second week in a row that STX failed to get a million start (including last week’s UglyDolls.)The studio picked up Poms through auction at the American Film Market last November for between million and million, and it opened this weekend to .1 million.Lionsgate’s Long Shot, meanwhile, dropped 37% in its second weekend. While word of mouth has caught up to the film a little, the drop was still to big to beat The Intruder in its second week.Fox Searchlight has opened a film in more than 1,000 theaters just 28 times in its 183-film history. The 29th time came this weekend with Tolkien. While there was enough curiosity to earn it .1 million in 1,496 theaters this weekend, the biopic’s per-screen-average of ,440 currently makes it the second-worst per-theater average among those 29 films. If the estimates hold, that is. If the number actually drops, it could fall behind the ,383 PTA that Miss March had in 2009 and become the worst. Between Tolkien (49%) and The Aftermath (27%), Fox Searchlight has released its two lowest-scored films since 2017’s back-to-back releases of Table 19 (26%) and Wilson (48%).The Top Ten And Beyond: New Releases Nothing To Pikachu About(Photo by Warner Bros.)Back in March, expectations for Pokemon Detective Pikachu were set for a million weekend and, in some circles, a 0 million domestic haul. The high predictions came back down to Earth a bit recently as WB lowballed a million start for its live-action Pokemon film. Audiences split the difference this weekend and handed over million, which is a little more than what The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian opened to. A Dog’s Journey may take a small nibble out of its staying power next week and Aladdin an even larger bite the week after. Critics have marginally put it in Fresh territory with a 63% score and a first estimate of 0-170 million for Pikachu means WB will be counting on international fans to cover its 0 million budget. The film has grossed an additional 2.4 million overseas so far. Also opening this weekend was the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. It opened to a bit less (.5 million) than Wilson’s February comedy, Isn’t It Romantic?, which started with .2 million even with a two-day head start. At 16%, The Hustle is one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, lower than the score for Hathaway’s other delayed 2019 release, Serenity (19%).This Time Last Year: Infinity War Was Also On Its Third Straight Week At The Top(Photo by Marvel Studios)A year ago, Avengers: Infinity War led the way for a third straight week with the fourth-best third weekend in history ( million.) Its two new challengers that weekend, Life of the Party with Melissa McCarthy and home invasion thriller Breaking In, duked it out for second and third with .88 and .63 million, respectively. The documentary RBG also made its way into tenth place in its second weekend with .18 million in 179 theaters. The top ten films grossed a total of 6.69 million and averaged 63.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated 2.77 million and averaged 53.4%.On the Vine: John Wick Battles A Dog In Attempt To Take Down The Avengers(Photo by Summit Entertainment)Keanu Reeves returns to potentially close out a trilogy in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum. After the disappointing returns of Long Shot, Lionsgate could use a non-Tyler Perry victory. Will this be the one to finally make it to 0 million? Will its fans be enough to overthrow the Avengers in week four? Speaking of sequels and animals Mr. Wick is fond of, Universal follows up moderate hit A Dog’s Purpose with A Dog’s Journey. Then the director of Before I Fall, Ry Russo-Young, tackles another young adult novel with The Sun Is Also A Star. The Full Top 10: May 10-12Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .05 million (3.49 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – million ( million total)The Hustle (2019) 14% – .53 million (.53 million total)The Intruder (2019) 33% – .60 million (.97 million total)Long Shot (2019) 81% – .12 million (.73 million total)Poms (2019) 36% – .11 million (.11 million total)UglyDolls (2019) 28% – .92 million (.27 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .46 million (.10 million total)Tolkien (2019) 51% – .15 million (.15 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .81 million (3.77 million total)

Universal Pictures confirmed this week that the main Fast and the Furious franchise will wrap up with F11. F9 director Justin Lin will also return to direct F10 and F11, with the expectation of bring back Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Ludacris Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Sung Kang. (Sorry, Gal Gadot fans.) It s also worth noting that this is just the core franchise we re talking about here, as plans for a Hobbs Shaw sequel starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are still in development.Other Top Headlines1. MICHAEL B. JORDAN PRODUCING DC COMICS SUPERHERO MOVIE STATIC SHOCK(Photo by Warner Bros. Animation/Everett Collection)Warner Bros announced at their DC Fandome virtual event in August that there were plans for a feature film adaptation of Static Shock, which was sort of their flagship title in the 1990s for their Milestone Media division before also being adapted in the early 2000s as a Kids WB animated series. This week, the Static Shock movie received a high profile partner in Michael B. Jordan, who joins the project as producer through his Outlier Society production company. 2. CANADIAN NEWCOMER LANDS TIGER LILY ROLE IN PETER PAN WENDY  (Photo by Disney/Everett Collection)When Warner Bros and director Joe Wright made Pan in 2015, one of the movie s biggest controversies revolved around the decision to cast Rooney Mara as the Native American princess Tiger Lily. (Mara later expressed regret over taking the job. For their own live-action adaptation of Peter Pan, called Peter Pan Wendy, Walt Disney Pictures is avoiding that sort of PR disaster by casting Canadian newcomer Alyssa Wapanatâhk, who is of Cree heritage,  as Tiger Lily. The role has also reportedly been reimagined from how author and playwright J.M. Barrie originally depicted the character. Wapanatâhk is joining a live action cast which already includes Jude Law as Captain Hook, Yara Shahidi (black-ish) as Tinker Bell, and two other relative newcomers: Alexander Molony as Peter, and Ever Anderson as Wendy. 3. WENDELL PIERCE TO TAKE CENTER STAGE IN B.B. KING BIOPIC(Photo by Paramount/Everett Collection)Trends come and go in Hollywood, but one that is definitely surging right now is the musician biopic, partly because of the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman. Biopics in the pipeline as of this week include Respect (Aretha Franklin), Elvis (Presley), I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Whitney Houston), and untitled projects about Madonna and Sammy Davis, Jr. To this list, we can add famed blues guitarist B.B. King (1925-2015), as actor Wendell Pierce revealed online this week that he will star as King in a biopic called The Thrill Is On. Pierce is perhaps best known for his role as Bunk Moreland on HBO s The Wire. On Twitter, Pierce noted that he will honor [King] and his creative genius. No director for The Thrill is Gone has been announced yet.  4. REESE WITHERSPOON CASTS HER ADAPTATION OF BESTSELLER WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING(Photo by Hulu/Everett Collection)Debut novelist Delia Owens had a huge surprise best selling hit in 2019 with the novel Where the Crawdads Sing, about a young mid-centur girl growing up alone in the marshlands of rural North Carolina who finds herself the focus of a scandal. Reese Witherspoon s Hello Sunshine production company partnered with Sony Pictures earlier this year to produce a Where the Crawdads Sing movie, and this week the lead role has gone to  22-year-old British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones. She has mostly worked in English and Irish film and TV projects like Cold Feet and Normal People. The Crawdads adaptation will be directed by Olivia Newman (First Match) from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar (Troop Zero).5. THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD MIGHT VE JUST GOTTEN A LOT LONGER FOR WICKED(Photo by Everett Collection)The Broadway musical adaptation of the novel Wicked debuted seventeen years ago, and Universal Pictures has been developing a movie version since 2012 (including a period in which the film was scheduled for release in the December 2019 spot that eventually went to Cats). The production plans that would ve led to that 2019 release were eventually scrapped, and Universal rescheduled Wicked instead for two years later on December 22, 2021. The Wicked movie now hits another serious bump on the Yellow Brick Road as director Stephen Daldry has left the production. Although Universal is now faced with replacing Daldry during the COVID-19 pandemic, his departure was reportedly over scheduling, with Universal wanting Wicked sooner than Daldry was comfortable moving (and also due to a lack of stage space in London where Daldry wanted to film). Universal reportedly hopes to start filming Wicked with a new director by late 2021. There is currently no new release date, but Universal s pattern for Wicked seems to suggest it will be a December in whatever year they eventually choose, which now looks like 2022 or 2023. According to Deadline, possible Wicked directors could include J.J. Abrams, James Mangold, Rob Marshall, Ryan Murphy, and Steven Spielberg.6. LONG-TIME X-MEN PRODUCER TAKING THE HELM ON BATTLESTAR GALACTICA REBOOT  (Photo by Unviersal Television/Everett Collection)An entire book could be written about the many twists and turns that the Battlestar Galactica franchise has taken since showrunner Glen A. Larson came up with the idea as Adam s Ark in the 1960s. In addition to the original 1978-1979 TV show, there was also a 1978 re-edit movie version released in theaters using Sensurround, the Galactica 1980 spinoff series, the critically acclaimed 2004-2009 reboot series, and various other attempts at a reboot movie, including projects from original series star Richard Hatch and X-Men director Bryan Singer. As it turns out, Universal s plans for more Battlestar Galactica may indeed involve one of the people behind the X-Men movies: Simon Kinberg (franchise writer and Dark Phoenix director), who has signed to write and produce the BS reboot movie. A separate reboot TV show is also in development.7. HARRISON FORD AND ED HELMS TO COSTAR IN BURT SQUIRE SHIPWRECK COMEDY  (Photo by Disney/Everett Collection)The COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything about the movie business, including production, but people are finding workarounds. A frequent approach appears to be filming outside the United States, especially in remote places where crews can more easily be quarantined and self-contained. The Isle of Man is a relatively small (221 square miles) bit of land in the Irish Sea, and it s where a new comedy will soon be filmed. Harrison Ford and Ed Helms are signed to star in the shipwreck comedy The Miserable Adventures of Burt Squire Aboard the Horn High Yo, reportedly based on a true story about a man (Helms) in the midst of a midlife crisis who embarks on what he hopes would be a dream sailing vacation, but ends up shipwrecked in the Atlantic Ocean with a charming but unhinged sea captain. That would be Ford s character. STX Films hasn t announced a director yet.8. DIRECTOR OF NETFLIX S REBECCA SETTING SAIL FOR GIANT SHARK SEQUEL THE MEG 2(Photo by WB/Everett Collection)Some directors stay consistently within their own niche film to film, but others will occasionally go in a completely surprising direction. For example, British director Ben Wheatley has delivered within a modest range of thrillers or suspenseful dramas, including Netflix s recent remake of Rebecca. A movie that would not seem 100% obvious for Wheatley to direct next would be the sequel to the 2018 giant shark action movie The Meg. Now Wheatley has signed on for exactly that. Jason Statham starred in the first film, and is expected to return.9. POWER RANGERS TO BE REBOOTED (AGAIN) WITH A SHARED TV/FILM CINEMATIC UNIVERSE(Photo by Lionsgate/Everett Collection)It was just three years ago that Lionsgate released their ambitious Power Rangers reboot, which earned just 2 million worldwide from a budget of over 5 million. One might argue that the low box office was a sign that the moviegoing audience, but Paramount Pictures (taking over from Lionsgate) is moving forward with plans for a new Power Rangers cinematic universe with stories set both in feature films and new TV shows. Paramount, eOne, and Hasbro have enlisted Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World, I Am Not Okay With This) to shepherd all of the potential Power Rangers projects in both film and TV. None of the actors and actresses in the recent 2017 reboot (including Elizabeth Banks) are expected to be involved with Paramount s projects. On an Apple device? During Awards Season, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley will be reporting on the big contenders, the most important ceremonies, and surprise shifts in the race towards Oscar gold.If Toronto and Telluride start the awards conversation, the first two big indie awards nominations of the year start to put that chatter into sharper focus – showing which titles are actually going to do more than get people talking. On Friday, November 16, Crazy Rich Asians actress Gemma Chan and Private Life’s Molly Shannon will unveil The Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019 nominees, and later this month, The Gotham Awards will hold their annual ceremony honoring the lifetime achievements of Willem Dafoe, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Greengrass, alongside their category winners. Keep a close eye on the winners. In recent years, indie darlings Moonlight and Spotlight won big at both ceremonies and ended the season with a Best Picture win, beating out bigger-budget commercial frontrunners.  With the Gotham Awards kicking things off later this month and the Independent Spirits holding their ceremony the night before the Oscars, let’s take a closer look at these two indie awards shows that effectively bookend the season and examine how well they signal future Oscar accolades.Gotham Awards(Photo by Roy Rochlin/Getty Images)Established: 1991Nominations Announced: October 18Ceremony: Monday, November 26, 2018Voting Body: Contenders are nominated by a jury of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators; a separate jury of filmmakers, writers, producers, and film crew members vote on the winner. Both juries are primarily composed of New York or Northeastern-based industry folk.Criteria: Films made with an economy of means, though no specific dollar amount is listed.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best ScreenplayIn its early years, The Gotham Awards primarily celebrated films created by Northeastern filmmakers or filmed in the area; thus the awards were aptly named ‘Gotham,’ the unofficial pseudonym for New York City. However, in 2004 The Independent Film Project (IFP), the largest and longest-running not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion of independent film, broadened its scope to include the larger filmmaking community, including international films. Announcing nominees in mid-October, The Gothams hammer down the first stakes on the road to next year s Oscars. But with nominations proposed by a jury looking to champion hidden gems, the winners don t always line up with Oscar nominations. Last year, only Jordan Peele’s Get Out earned similar honors at both the Gothams and the Oscars when he took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay. Moonlight and Spotlight went on the win Best Picture after winning Best Feature at the Gothams, beating out early front-runners La La Land and The Revenant. On the acting side, Matthew McConaughey and Casey Affleck sprinted off the blocks with Gotham Best Actor wins and crossed the tape with Best Actor Oscars in 2013 and 2016. But since 2013, only Julianne Moore managed to win both a Gotham and an Oscar for her performance in Still Alice. The nomination numbers slightly favor the ladies, with 40% of Gotham Nominees making it to Oscar night, while only 33% of male nominees accomplish the same feat. In the end, the Gothams are a good indication of Oscar potential but not much more than that.Independent Spirit Awards(Photo by Randall Michelson/Getty Images)Established: 1984Nominations Announced: November 16Ceremony: Saturday, February 23, 2019Voting Body: Film Independent MembersCriteria: US-Based film for major Categories. Cost of the completed film must be less than million.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead. Best Male Lead, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, Best Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography, Best EditingHeld in a tent off the Santa Monica pier on the Saturday before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards are the laid back California cousin to the NYC-based Gothams, or maybe just a boozy, low-budget Oscar pre-party take your pick. Last year, Frances McDormand sported a pajama-styled dress suit, and Timothée Chalamet arrived decked out in an oversized button-down looking like he’d finished a shift at Kwik Trip. Dress code aside, one thing is sure: the Independent Spirit Awards go hand in hand with Oscar gold. Since 2009, every Independent Spirit Best Feature winner has been nominated for Best Picture, with four of the last five Best Feature winners going on to win Best Picture. Since 2010, the acting nominations are on par with the Gothams, with about 30% of the acting nominees also nominated in comparable Oscar categories. Winning an Independent Spirit, however, significantly ups a nom s chances, with a staggering 65% of Indie winners winning on both nights.Still, the awards are known for rewarding performances that don t get much Oscar love: John Hawkes, Molly Shannon, Mya Taylor, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, and Idris Elba all won acting awards at the Spirits without earning an Oscar nomination in comparable categories. Taking all this into account on Friday, November 16th should drop several clues to the films that will shape the season. This year, current Best Picture frontrunner A Star Is Born is ineligible at the Indie Spirits, leaving Netflix’s Roma the presumed favorite among Film Independent voters. But word has it Roma will be relegated to only Best International Film, even though it was produced by and financed by Netflix and Participant Media, two US-based production companies. If Roma pulls any nominations and happens to win when the trophies are handed out in February, don t rule it out for a Best Picture win. Like La La Land and The Revenant before it, A Star Is Born may be just that – a star that burned bright but fizzled out come voting time. Or it could burn bright. Who knows – it s not even December. Either way, stay tuned Friday to see who gets a little heat from the Spirit nominations.
不过需要去其他服务器玩延迟还是比较高,玩家们都在盼着国服LOL手游什么时候公测,春节前国家就公布了LOL手游的版号,也就是说今年肯定会上线,只是时间早晚而已。
Premiering during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ted Lasso became the feel-good sports comedy we didn t know we needed. The series from Jason Sudeikis, Bill Laurence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly slowly found its way into our hearts, garnering multiple accolades and a Peabody Award along the way.The gist of the program follows U.S. Football Coach Ted Lasso (Sudeikis) as he travels from America to the U.K. to coach a struggling soccer team. Season 1 put underdog team AFC Richmond on competitive ground, even though they faced a loss and were relegated. Now Lasso and his crew — Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Coach Beard (Hunt), Keeley Jones (Juno Temple), Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Nathan (Nick Mohammed) — must maintain the team s relevancy in the professional sports world while dealing with personal challenges along the way. With new episodes launching on AppleTV+ on Friday, July 23, and a third season in development, does the show still hit the mark? Here s what critics are saying about Ted Lasso season 2:HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO SEASON 1?(Photo by AppleTV+)The premiere does get off to a bumpy start with a clunky plot point that’s out of character for a normally grounded series, but it leads to the introduction of Season 2’s big addition: sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, played by Sarah Niles (I May Destroy You). She’s brought in to help get the players’ heads on straight, and she quickly lets Ted know she’s not a fan of juvenile horseplay… or cookies. The players love her, but she’s seemingly immune to Ted’s charms — and her arrival triggers a fresh wave of anxiety in the old ball coach.  Dave Nemetz, TVLineLuckily, after a less-than-successful start to the season, Ted Lasso quickly regains its footing, and the writers reveal they haven’t completely forgotten how to make good TV.  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineIn the opening minutes of the new season’s first episode (“Goodbye Earl”), Ted eloquently espouses on how life and death can make us better people, evoking the heightened dramedy of Lawrence’s Scrubs. The episode also carries a reminder to avoid blanket assumptions as “all people are different people” as well as the insight that “intimacy is leaving yourself open to being attacked.” Pearls of wisdom deployed as easily digestible sitcom bites.  Brandon Katz, ObserverWHAT ARE THE BIG THEMES THIS SEASON? (Photo by Apple TV+)If Season 1 was a fish-out-of-water story about a man who succeeds through kindness and positivity and baking really great biscuits, then Season 2 is all about the health and success of the team and expanding the narrative beyond Ted’s immediate influence on those around him.  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineHopefully, the addition of stern sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) will help correct that balance. Her presence alone is evidence enough that – contrary to how this show often positions him – Lasso doesn’t have the answers to all of life’s questions. In the season premiere, Sharon is deliberately written as distant and enigmatic, which doesn’t give Niles a huge amount of room to play, but the character’s potential is already clear to see.  David Craig, Radio TimesTed Lasso embraces the fact that life is sometimes very hard; it s just also committed to the idea that we can still make it easier for each other.  Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderDOES IS STILL HIT THE FEEL-GOOD MARK?The emotional intelligence of Ted Lasso remains remarkably high. It’s what continues to elevate the series above common feel-good stories, which are often given a pass by audiences to exist as middle-of-the-road creations that opt for simplicity over nuance. But Ted Lasso is a more aspirational entry in this specific lane of storytelling.  Brandon Katz, ObserverSo much of its appeal lies in its essential good-naturedness — that belief that good people model goodness for each other, and that selflessness and community thinking can make everyone feel, work, and live better.  Clint Worthington, ConsequenceThe laughter quotient remains high for me; the more things change, the funnier things get, in large measure because the characters are better defined and the actors have a better handle on what makes their personalities distinctive, and different from everyone else.  Peter Martin, ScreenAnarchyThe show’s success would be meaningless without the eloquent, witty, and refreshing writing, which only grows more powerful as it progresses. In some ways, the new season of Ted Lasso changes right in front of our eyes. Previously a baby, the story is now reaching its full potential, with the characters maturing and learning new things about life.  Zofia Wijaszka, AwardsWatchHOW IS JASON SUDEIKIS PERFORMANCE?(Photo by Apple TV+)Sudeikis slides back into the mustache and button-down/sweater combo of Ted with as much bright-eyed joy and unexpected vulnerability as last season, even as we see season 2 starting to throw up some more roadblocks for him.  Clint Worthington, ConsequenceIn reaching for a criticism of this relentlessly upbeat season so far, it’s the over-reliance on Ted’s folksy witticisms. There’s a conversation early on in the season in which he uses three similes and metaphors back-to-back-back. It’s smirk-worthy when Ted responds to a cocktail invitation by saying the “same thing I’d say to Diane Sawyer if she ever asked me on a date: yes please.” The show has never been about traditional setup-punchline jokes and this personality tic substituted for that humor in Season 1. But after the umpteenth usage in Season 2, it begins to feel a tad cloying. Still, that’s far from a fatal flaw.  Brandon Katz, ObserverNot only does Sudeikis take his performance to new levels in season 2, he ventures into new territory with the character, and the show built around him is better for it.  Rick Marshall, Digital TrendsWHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE CAST?(Photo by Apple TV+)In particular, Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) and Danny Rojas take more central roles in the narrative. Jimoh is a revelation, charming with every smile or grimace. Fernández propels Danny past the one-joke punchline of his original appearance ( football is life! ) and shows superb comedic skills.  Kelly Lawler, USA TodayLike his titular character, executive producer Sudeikis doesn t lead with his ego, and the best material in the new episodes goes to his fellow writer-performer Goldstein. Roy Kent is a blisteringly funny bastard with a fierce heart, and Goldstein deepens his character s emotional core every week — including, if you can believe it, as the key player in a rom-com tribute episode.  Kristen Baldwin, EWHannah Waddingham and Juno Temple continue their strong on-screen chemistry as club owner Rebecca and model-turned-publicist Keeley, who became unlikely besties over the course of season one.  David Craig, Radio TimesThe series has doubled down on what works—Ted’s ability to lead, Rebecca’s (Hannah Waddingham) strength, Keeley’s (Juno Temple) PR acumen, and Nate’s (Nick Mohammed) keen insight into the team—while also finding new and fun ways to explore characters like Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie (Phil Dunster).  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineANY FINAL THOUGHTS?(Photo by Apple TV+)“Ted Lasso” hasn’t succumbed to any easy temptations; it still embodies its coach in being sweeter than it should be able to get away with and smarter than you’d expect, given its unassuming nature. “Ted Lasso” hasn’t been changed by its success, aside from a few guilt-free indulgences.  Ben Travers, IndiewireThis time out, Lasso comes out of the locker room ready to play from the first whistle. The jokes land correctly from the start, the characters seem as rich or richer than when we last saw them. Happily, Ted Lasso looks poised to dodge any sort of sophomore slump.  Tim Stevens, The SpoolSeason 2 of Ted Lasso loses none of the show’s momentum heading into its next story arc, and builds on the successes of its first season in all the right ways. It continues to be one of the smartest, most entertaining, and most rewarding shows running right now, thanks to a talented cast that remains as invested in the series and its messages as their characters are in the optimistic outlook of the show’s titular coach.  Rick Marshall, Digital TrendsTed Lasso Season 2 is premiering at a very different time, comparatively, but that doesn t make it any less important or valuable or necessary. It s hard to imagine a world where we wouldn t need a show like this.  Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderTed Lasso season 2 premieres on Friday, July 23 on AppleTV+.Thumbnail: Apple TV+

With Sunday’s Critic’s Choice Award ceremony done, all of the prominent critics groups have had their say on the best films of 2018. Each year, countless critics associations host year-end awards to recognize exceptional filmmaking, but the National Society of Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Circle, and Broadcast Film Critics Association are carefully considered when making Oscars predictions. Each group will say they are independent to the academy in voting, tastes, and identity, but they help shape the race for the big one. And so we have our eyes on them. Our Awards Leaderboard tracks major critics groups and guilds honors, and looking at the current leaders, we think Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Favourite should feel fairly confident of some Oscar love when the nominations are announced on Tuesday. (Regina King, Olivia Colman, and Richard E. Grant in particular would not be risking much to set an early alarm.) This year, though, there have been coordinated efforts to bring lesser-known films and performances into the conversation, so we re also expecting a number of surprises among the noms. Where might those surprises come from? Below, we re looking at Oscar long shots who might just have enough buzz – and which have a couple of awards already in the bag – to break through with some Oscar voters.Toni Collette, Hereditary (2018) 89%  Best ActressAlready recognized by: Gotham Awards, Film IndependentDo we need to say more about what Toni Collette did in Hereditary? It seems some may have forgotten the greatest full body performance of 2018. In the movie – which caught fire at Sundance and made an impact at the box office – Collette gifted all of us with a face-screwed-screech-filled-terrified performance that takes at least three viewings to fully deconstruct. The Aussie actress started strong this awards season with a Gotham win followed by a Film Independent nomination, but then things went quiet. Collette would be vying for the open fifth Best Actress nomination – assuming favorites Colman, Lady Gaga, Glenn Close, and Melissa McCarthy all come through as expected. She will need those horror lovers in the Academy to champion her incredible work.Yalitza Aparicio, Roma (2018) 96%  Best ActressAlready Recognized by: BFCA, Gotham Awards(Photo by © Netflix)It s worth noting the star of the most awarded film of the season has gone largely unrecognized. An unknown actress, in a black-and-white foreign language film, distributed on a platform many Academy voters herald as the end of cinema, is a hard sell. Director Alfonso Cuarón has repeatedly said Roma does not exist without the women who inspired and made it, but the accolades have not exactly come streaming in. In Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical love letter to Mexico and the woman who raised him, Aparicio gave depth and aching authenticity to a character rarely featured on screen. Cuarón painted a masterpiece, but Aparicio is the canvas, paint, and brush.Steven Yeun, Burning (2018) 95%  Best ActorAlready Recognized by: LAFCA, NSFC(Photo by @ Go Well USA)Yeun’s performance as a South Korean playboy in Burning is ethereal, charismatic, and unnerving. Another foreign language entry, Lee Chang-dong’s noir-thriller slowly unravels and builds to a climactic twist you don’t see coming – and so much of it rests on the former Walking Dead star s performance; our thoughts on Yuen’s character, Ben, mirror how we interpret the events of the film. Is he just a spoiled playboy formulating sinister plots for entertainment? Or is he a calculating psychopath? Or maybe just a guy who likes to burn greenhouses? It all rests on what we see in Yuen, in his gaze or sly smile. It’s a tightrope to pull off a likable Oscar-worthy villain, and Yeun makes it look effortless. The formula worked for Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men, so fingers crossed.Debra Granik, Leave No Trace (2018) 100%  Best DirectorAlready Recognized by: Film Independent, National Board of Review, LAFCA(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)In a year littered with exceptional work by female directors, it’s hard to justify their lack of inclusion come award time. The Rider, You Were Never Really Here, A Private Life, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and Destroyer all are worthy of recognition. But Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace distinguishes itself from even those stellar entries – and not just because it still sits at 100% on our Tomatometer after 200 reviews. Director Jane Campion may have said it best in her impassioned plea for Leave No Trace: “A film filled with compassion… it has had a powerful impact on audiences. Not because it is loud, but because the truth that Granik speaks quietly can be heard even in a noisy world.”Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade (2018) 99%  Best ActressAlready Recognized by: Film Independent, Gotham Awards, DGA, BFCA, NYFCC(Photo by © A24)Cringeworthy Cinema: that’s how Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade and its star Elsie Fisher charmed their way into our hearts. Reliving the painfully awkward moments of adolescence with such unflinching honesty, Fisher gave the best performance of the year that we had to watch through fingers and stooping down in our seats. (OK, maybe tied with Collette – but for very different reasons.) Burnham’s script is the quintessential coming-of-age story for the YouTube generation and, as with Roma, his film lives or dies by its central performance. As Kayla, Fisher is relatable and endearing for tweens and their parents, finding a perfect blend of earnestness and mortification.Ethan Hawke, First Reformed (2017) 93%  Best ActorAlready Recognized by: Film Independent, Gotham Awards, NYFCC, BFCA, LAFCA, NSFC(Photo by © A24)Ethan Hawke often remarks that he doesn t want to be known just for the Dead Poets Society. But after the over 30 years, 80 credits, four Oscar nominations, and countless more beloved performances, Hawke still hears Oh Captain, My Captain on the regular. His turn as the conflicted and apathetic Reverend Toller is miles away from any previous role he has done. Many are taking notice: With a near clean sweep of the critics associations, Hawke s performance in First Reformed is second only to Regina King s in Beale Street in regards to acclaim this season. Why isn t he a lock for an Oscar nom? Hawke s lack of movement outside of the critics groups awards does not bode well. We ll be watching this one keenly.Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019
