Each faced tough odds, but no one could predict that one of the film s subjects, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, would become one of the most talked about politicians in the legislature. The film documents AOC s road to the ballot box alongside Amy Vilela of Nevada, Cori Bush of Missouri, and Paula Jean Swearengin of West Virginia.Critics Consensus: A galvanizing glimpse behind the scenes of a pivotal election, Knock Down the House should prove engrossing for viewers of all political persuasions.Where to watch it: Stream it on Netflix.Stream it soon: Amazing Grace (2018) 99%What it is: The late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was in a decades-long legal battle with the man behind the concert doc Amazing Grace. Originally intended for release by Warner Bros. in 1972, director Alan Elliott s film was long delayed as he spent time trying to find lost footage and fend off legal challenges from Franklin. Though never publicly stated, Elliott maintains the soul singer s suit and objections were just a negotiating tactic. After the singer s death, her estate reached an agreement with Elliott and Amazing Grace was cleared to premiere in 2018. Shot by late director Sydney Pollack and reassembled by Elliott, the feature lives as the only video documentation of one of the best-selling gospel albums in history and an enduring tribute to the late singer at the height of her power. Critics Consensus: Brilliantly capturing a remarkable performer near the peak of her prodigious power, Amazing Grace is a thrilling must-watch documentary for Aretha Franklin fans.Where to watch it: Currently in limited release. Available for digital download or on Blu-Ray and DVD August 6.Stream It: Running With Beto (2019) 91%What it is: Regardless of your political leanings, Running with Beto is a highly entertaining and intimate look at a candidate running against political convention. A Democrat has not won a statewide election in Texas for over 25 years, but with a millennial-friendly social media strategy and old-fashioned grassroots campaigning Texas Congressman Beto O Rourke made a serious run against incumbent Senator Ted Cruz. Running With Beto captures the drama of the campaign.Critics Consensus: Candid and compelling, Running with Beto is an illuminating exploration of an up-and-coming politician and the changing political landscape around him.Where to watch it: Watch on HBO or HBONow.In theaters: Pavarotti (2019) 87%What it is: In the age ofInstagram celebs it s hard to believe that at one time – for several decades in fact – one of the biggest stars in the world was an opera singer. Luciano Pavarotti transcended the opera singer stereotype to become a bona fide A-list celebrity and live a fascinating life. Handled by a rock-and-roll manager, Pavarotti lived the life of a hard-rock frontman and documented much of what happened. Director Ron Howard was given access to the late singer s home movies and – for the first time – given permission to interview Pavarotti s wives, children, and closest friends.Critics Consensus: Pavarotti pays entertaining tribute to a towering cultural figure with a documentary whose evident affection for its subject proves contagious.Where to watch it: Currently in limited theatrical release. In theaters: The Biggest Little Farm (2018) 91% What it is: When a noise complaint about their dog got them evicted them from their apartments, filmmaker John Chester and his chef wife Molly Chester bet it all on The Farm. The revolutionary organic farm they created is actually a return to noncommercial farming techniques, and the trials and tribulations of achieving it are the focus of this documentary, which spans the course of seven years. A perfect watch if you re looking for inspiration for your own veggie patch.Critics Consensus: Uplifting, educational, and entertaining, The Biggest Little Farm is an environmental advocacy documentary with a satisfying side dish of hope for the future.Where to watch it: Currently in limited theatrical release.Coming soon: Maiden (2018) 98% What it is: The tale of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook turned skipper for the first all-female crew to sail around the world, is one so incredible it sounds like a work of fiction. In truth, tired of being dismissed and passed over because of her gender, Edwards took on the male-dominated sailing competition Whitbread Round the World with her historic team entry. Following the formation of the crew and every battle they fought just to compete, this is one of the most rousing feelgood stories of the summer.Where to watch it: In limited release June 28.Stream it: The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019) 79% What it is: Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced former CEO and founder of blood-testing startup Theranos, is another one of those figures destined to inspire hours of entertainment. She s the subject of several books, countless articles, and an upcoming feature film with Jennifer Lawrence attached, and The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is the latest to feature the poster child for everything wrong with the tech industry and icon idolatry. Chronicled by Going Clear documentarian Alex Gibney, Stanford dropout Holmes was obsessed with Apple CEO Steve Jobs and molded herself in his image, crafting a house-of-cards empire built largely on hero worship and aggressive PR without having ever achieved actual success.Critics Consensus: Alex Gibney s The Inventor declines to outright condemn the actions by Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, but instead provides a comprehensive overview of the scandal that allows viewers to mull over its implications towards the broader Silicon ValleyWhere to watch it: Watch on HBO or HBONow.Coming Soon: Love, Antosha (2019) 97% What it is: Actor Anton Yelchin was an artist that defied categorization. The star of blockbuster films like Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation, and The Smurfs and beloved indies like Green Room, Like Crazy, and Odd Thomas, Yelchin was a cinematic chameleon. (2019) 96% What it is: Satanism takes center stage in the hilarious documentary Hail Satan?. The movie chronicles the satanic temple s fight in deeply Christian Arkansas and forces audiences to reconsider the sect religion that is so often a punchline. After only 30 minutes of Hail Satan?, you ll begin to question if the group is in fact comprised of assumed weirdo outcasts or something more like patriots.Critics Consensus: Hail Satan? challenges preconceived notions of its subject with a smart, witty, and overall entertaining dispatch from the front lines of the fight for social justice.Where to watch it: Available for digital download or on Blu-Ray and DVD July 23.Like this? Just because she thinks that she is the rightful ruler and just because she thinks she s ready to lead doesn t mean she is, said Sackhoff, who revealed that Bo-Katan s ego and readiness to lead was one of the many topics she discussed with Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni when they first talked about Bo-Katan s possible appearance on the show last year.Sackhoff cornered Filoni at Star Wars Celebration in April 2019 to talk about characters from Rebels — set roughly a decade before The Mandalorian — possibly making the leap to live action. I always wanted to do this, and I needed to be sure that she fit into the world and that her age worked, she said. I was fingers crossed that I would be allowed to do it. Then the call came, which she said was the most surreal moment of my life. (Photo by Justin Stephens / © SCI-FI / Courtesy: Everett Collection)At the same time, though, playing Bo-Katan on The Mandalorian felt like a natural extension of her career, Sackhoff said: I ve spent the last 25 years figuring out how to play strong women. Besides her role as hot-shot pilot Capt. Kara Starbuck Thrace on the Battlestar Galatica reboot, Sackhoff has also put time in on series like The Bionic Woman, The Flash, and, most recently, Netflix s Another Life, the second season of which she is currently shooting. All the pieces just seemed to fit together, she said. She also found a surprising new sense of ownership of the role once she had a set of armor to wear on set. It was just my voice [in animation], and, really, my job at that moment was to deliver performances that Dave wanted, she explained. When you re going to live action and you are then given the responsibility of portraying this character in actuality, it s a very different thing. (Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Although her familiarity with the character was a benefit, it also presented a unique challenge when building the performance. Back in the recording booth on the animated shows, she could be big and expressive to get the performance Filoni wanted, but bringing that larger-than-life energy was out of place on the set of The Mandalorian. Bo is regal — her upbringing raised her to be so — and she s very stoic and she s very purposeful. When her face does something, it s calculated, and I needed to make sure that translated because that is very much already been established in animation, Sackhoff explained. I had to relearn my own face to make it move less. Crazy Katee can t show up. It wouldn t have worked. She credited The Heiress episode director Bryce Dallas Howard with helping her find the happy medium between who Bo was in animation and who she is in reality. The episode now has a 97% Tomatometer score on 31 critic reviews.

7.76.8 5月喜迎Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino s ninth film (if you count the Kill Bill movies as one), just earned him his highest opening-weekend box office, so it s safe to say mainstream audiences were primed and ready for another of the maverick director s stylized adventures. Currently sitting Certified Fresh at 84% on the Tomatometer, the rambling tour through the Los Angeles of 1969 ranks just below Django Unchained in Tarantino s filmography, marking only the latest critical hit in a career full of them. But what did average moviegoers think of the movie? Once Upon a Time currently holds an Audience Score of 72%, which ties 2007 s Death Proof as the lowest of any of his films. Is 72% a bad score? Not by any means, but considering Tarantino s reputation as a filmmaker, it indicates a certain level of dissatisfaction not commonly associated with his movies. With that in mind, we decided to take a peek at the user reviews to get a broader sense of how the moviegoing public at large responded to the film and suss out what might have brought that Audience Score down just a touch more than we expected. Check out the user reviews of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and let us know what you thought of the film, and these reviews, in the comments. (Note, some of the reviews have been slightly edited for length and grammar/spelling.)(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)How does this compare to Tarantino s previous work? Not Tarantino s best. Sean W C, 2.5 starsThis is for the hardcore Tarantino fan. Good, but not mind-blowing.. Sean B, 3 starsIt was just OK. The most un-Tarantino movie he s made. Stephen M, 3 starsTarantino never ceases to make a masterpiece time and time again. The cinematics were pleasing, classic, and very on brand If you are a fan of good visuals, excellent acting, and a compelling storyline with Tarantino s classic touches as the cherry on top, then this is the movie to see.– Zada, 5 StarsWhat a wild ride. The first two hours are definitely a different take from Tarantino, very different from his usual stuff. But the last 40-or-so minutes are unmistakably Tarantino in full. Kyle, 5 starsI really enjoyed the movie. It was a bit different from Quentin’s other movies, but nonetheless the cast pulled it off. The movie kept me wondering, and then I really got to see what the tale was, and was immediately hooked and impressed. It’s safe to say Tarantino hasn’t lost his touch. I would like to watch it again. Jay A, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)How is the pacing and plot?Terrible movie no plot, no entertainment value, just three hours of pointless dialogue. Wow, I don’t know how people enjoy this crap. Literally nothing happened until the last 20 minutes! Nothing! Do not see this movie!!! Matthew K, 0.5 starsNot his best work. Meandering and pointless. Very disappointing. David S, 2 starsThere really is not any character development or a main driving plot in the film. I would closely relate it to Pulp Fiction, in that it’s more of a series of random but loosely collected clips. A lot of people left the theater asking, “What was the point of this ?” I think the film would be more enjoyable at home when there is time to burn; there’s just too much dead time that could’ve been removed and made this movie ~1.5 hours shorter. Daves_Ratings, 2 starsA little long. Could have cut out about 1/3 of the movie. Stephen M, 3 starsThis movie, to me, is a triumph. Although devoid of a clear plot/narrative, Tarantino crafts the dialogue and characters in ways which make it fun to watch. And although the second act tends to drag at times, the overall story is a blast to watch, along with incredibly written characters acted perfectly (especially DiCaprio and Pitt). Also, the incredibly entertaining first two hours and 15 minutes lead into what may be my favorite scene in a movie this year. David A, 4.5 starsI love Tarantino s attention to detail, nuance and creativity. The camera tells a story in every scene. If you like fast food more than well-marinated, slow-cooked steak, then this might not appeal to you. CO Critic, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)What about the cast? The stars carried it. Steven B, 2.5 starsI enjoyed the movie, but it wasn t one of Tarantino s best. Great acting. Great camera work. Great sound track. But it didn t have the energy of Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill 1 and 2. Maybe I just expected too much. Gene, 3 starsMovie was enjoyable fun and Leo and Brad were electric together. Gina, 3.5 starsDamn fine filmmaking! I want a Rick Dalton movie, stat! Damien C, 4.5 starsA wonderful, meandering road with superb acting performances by both DiCaprio and Pitt that eventually leads us to one hell of an ending. If you re a Tarantino fan, or a fan of any of these actors, you should love this movie. Mike M, 5 starsDiCaprio Delivers yet Again. One of the best ensemble pieces in years. Brad Pitt was phenomenal and nuanced. Will see again. Siskel No Ebert, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)And the historical context?Do some research before watching. A big overarching plot point in the film (which I didn’t know going in) is centered on a famous cult murder from the 1960-70 period. Daves_Ratings, 2 starsA good story, but it lacks most of the thrill and suspense often found in his films. The difference with this one is that it explores Hollywood as a past and present establishment more than creating specific stories with protagonists who set out to achieve clearly defined goals. Mark, 3.5 starsLoved the 60s eye candy from small, well-curated objects like Aqua Net hairspray and the ode to 60s neon signs All in all, a wonderful stroll down memory lane (my era) by a director who has a unique personal style. Amy, 3.5 starsRecreation of the era and the story, cast, and characters will make you want to see this one again. Thomas, 5 stars(Photo by @ Columbia Pictures)What about that ending? The last 15 minutes were good. Too drawn out. Barry M, 2 starsI found the movie boring. The end was way too violent and weird. Very weird. Some people walked out early, and some people applauded the ending. It’s just a matter of personal taste, I guess. Donna W, 2.5 starsThe ending was a little disappointing and actually had some humor in it. Gina, 3.5 starsI don t want to spoil anything, but I was not expecting the ending at all. Zada, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)Any final thoughts?I feel misled about this movie; it s Helter Skelter revisited. I do not think that I would have gone to see this movie if I would have known. Ray B, 3 starsThis movie is so much fun! Don t miss it. Tarantino, DiCaprio, and Pitt knock it out of the park. They will both get Oscar nods, well deserved. Can t wait to see it again and again. Warren W, 4.5 starsCheck out all of the user reviews for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Like this? They may get gussied up in the trappings of larger ideas, but they remain small ideas. That appears to be what happened with Countdown, a high-concept horror flick that asks and answers the question, What if there was a mobile phone app that could predict the exact moment of my death? Elizabeth Lail stars as Quinn, a young nurse who, along with her colleagues, downloads the titular app out of morbid curiosity after an unusual encounter with a patient and discovers, much to her chagrin, that she may only have days before her time is up. And what happens to those who attempt to side-step their digitally predestined fate? It still comes to pass, of course, albeit under spookier circumstances. Critics say Countdown is a derivative thriller that reinterprets familiar ideas into a just-different-enough hodgepodge of jump scares and unnecessary subplots in order to stretch its central conceit to feature length. That said, most also agree that Lail and co-star Jordan Calloway are both likable leads, and it s a fairly short run to the finish line, so if you re just looking to get the heart rate up for a little bit, it may do the trick.
