bob综合体育彩票采用百度引擎2(Baidu 1)What We Saw in the Season 2 Premiere of The Mandalorian Sometime after the firefight on Navarro, Djarin made his way to a tough planet of gamblers and things that go bump in the night. His quarry: Gor Koresh (John Leguizamo), a dealer who may have information on other Mandalorian culverts. As Djarin subsequently explains, he is hoping other Mandos will have information on the Jedi — a legendary order of space wizards capable of the same physics-bending feats as The Child. But as the culverts all operate independently of one another, he needs to build a new communication network between them.Koresh is more interested in Djarin s shiny Beskar armor, but after a brief skirmish, he reveals the one place he s seen another Mandalorian: Tatooine.Heading back to the desert planet, Djarin meets up again with Mos Eisley landing bay operator Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) and makes for Mos Pelgo, a tiny mining town most believe was wiped out by raiders after the Empire abandoned the planet.Arriving in town, though, Djarin discovers it is alive and guarded by Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), a Tatooine native who, by chance, bought a set of familiar Mando armor. Well, familiar to viewers anyway. From Djarin s perspective, it s armor Vanth has no right to wear as he does not follow The Way of Mandalore. After an initial disagreement, they strike a deal: Djarin will help Vanth kill a Krayt Dragon terrorizing the region and Vanth will hand over the armor.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Their path leads to a Tusken settlement, where Djarin manages to negotiate a truce between the Sand People and Mos Pelgo. Everyone will help with Krayt Dragon and the Tuskens will never raid the town again — provided the humans never break the peace, of course. This being the Star Wars galaxy, the plan does not go smoothly, but Djarin manages to kill the Krayt Dragon from the inside and all agreements are honored. Sadly, the Mandalorian is no closer to his goal, but at least he has reclaimed some missing Mando armor. In the distance, an apparently alive Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) sees Djarin riding back to Mos Eisley.Season 2 Mandalorian Premiere Resolves Some Rumors (Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)In the time since The Mandalorian concluded its first season, many rumors about casting — and classic Star Wars characters appearing in the series — captured the imagination of fans across the internet. And though one would expect most of these would go unanswered for some time, the first episode of season 2 resolved a couple almost immediately.Olyphant s name first emerged as Vanth back in May. The character is pulled from the Star Wars: Aftermath novel trilogy by Chuck Wending. As in the books, he is a human on Tatooine who acquired Boba Fett s armor to bring justice to a backwater settlement, though his telling of the story differs from the books. As a performer, Olyphant brings even more of a Western edge to the character. From Vanth s preference for red to his U.S. Marshal mustache, he feels both a part of the Star Wars universe and our own. Also, it should be said, there s something nice about seeing a man of his word in the Star Wars galaxy. Djarin tends to deal with scum and villainy, so Vanth cheerfully handing the armor over felt unusual and hopeful.Indeed, seeing Djarin broker a peace between humans and Tuskens also felt uncharacteristically hopeful for his corner of the galaxy. Perhaps this will be a running theme this season.(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic; 20th Century Fox)But the big rumor resolved in the episode is the last-second appearance of Morrison as Boba Fett. At least, we think he is Boba Fett. Since his father Jango (also Morrison) volunteered to be the source of the Old Republic s eventual Clone Army, it is possible this character is another clone trooper. We doubt it s Captain Rex, the beloved Star Wars: The Clone Wars character voiced by Dee Bradley Baker — he d never shave that magnificent beard off.Assuming that wanderer in the Dune Sea is Boba Fett, it leaves us with a lot of questions: how did he escape the Great Pit of Carkoon? Why did he allow Vanth to use his armor for the last few years? And, perhaps the most provocative question, will Djarin accept him as a Mandalorian? As it happens, there is some question about his status as a Mando — an inheritance from some of the earliest rumors about Boba Fett in the 1980s Star Wars novels and comics — even though his father was adopted into the tribe at an early age and went on to lead the True Mandalorian faction sometime before the Clone Wars. Also, the armor itself is not Beskar, but instead made of Durasteel. While Djarin gave no indication he recognized the armor, it is possible the legend of the Fetts passed through the culverts. Then again, it is also possible some of that history has been lost. There s also the problem of The Way. Boba, even if he is not an adherent, has taken off his helmet, and Djarin would be unlikely to give the armor back to him. We doubt this will sit well with Boba.Or, who knows, maybe narrowly avoiding 1,000 years of pain and suffering in the belly of a Sarlaac changed his view of the universe.Star Wars Deep Pulls and Cameos That Appear in The Mandalorian’s Season 2 Premiere(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)As series creator and episode director Jon Favreau is not shy about his Star Wars fandom, the episode is littered with callbacks to the first season, the Star Wars films, and various parts of the lore. Our favorite may be the unlikely return of R5-D4. At least, we re fairly sure the R5 unit Motto refers to as unreliable is the very same droid with a bad motivator from the original Star Wars film. The carbon scouring on the rear of  its dome indicates the time it fried itself in front of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). R5-D4 also made a cameo in the first season s Tatooine episode at the now droid-run Mos Eisley cantina.Motto (pictured above) is also a nice callback to the first season. She is such an unexpected, workaday part of the galaxy that her viewpoint on events will always be welcome — see how her worry about The Child feels as lived in as her deprecation of the pit droids.(Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)And speaking of the pit droids, we can t help but think Vanth s speeder bike contains the remains of Anakin Skywalker s (Jake Lloyd) podracer. It looks like one of the engines, anyway, and considering how quickly things are forgotten on Tatooine, it is possible the racer was sold for parts only a handful of years after Qui-Gon Jinn sold it to fund repairs on Queen Amidala s (Natalie Portman) ship — events all seen in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. The Krayt Dragon is also a interesting pull. Its scream was imitated by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) in Star Wars to scare off the Tuskens, and one of its skeletons can be seen just after 3PO and R2-D2 arrive on the planet. Both moments are honored in the episode, but beyond that is the exploration of the Tuskens relationship to the creature. They fear the beast, but are also happy to harvest its innards should the opportunity arise. Also, anyone who played Knights of the Old Republic will get a shiver of déjà vu during the dragon hunt and the subsequent discovery of the pearl inside the carcass. The Mandalorian Season 2 Premiere Leaves Some Questions Unanswered (Photo by Lucasfilm/Disney+)Although the episode was quite satisfying, it left us with a few unanswered questions. It wouldn t be Star Wars without some dangling plot points, after all.Is Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) alive? She was seemingly rescued at the last moment by someone wearing spurs in last season s Tatooine episode. The common belief was either Boba Fett or Vanth found her. But she was completely absent from the Mos Pelgo adventure. It is still possible she died and the spur-wearing wander just looted her corpse, but it is also equally possible she was just off camera while Boba watched Djarin speed away. How Much Time Has Passed Since Last Season? Considering Djarin bought a new hoverpram for The Child and he seems comfortable with his jetpack, some time has passed since his encounter with Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), but it would be nice to know if it s been weeks or months since that time. And, unlike most infants, The Child will not appreciably grow for awhile, so he cannot be our calendar.Where Are The Imps? Although Djarin and his friends routed the Imps on Navarro, its safe to assume Gideon has some sort of backup. Are they tracking the Razor Crest? If not, why not?The Mandalorian streams on Disney+ with new episodes launching on Fridays. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

从LOL手游的国际服情况来看,LOL手游虽然在一定程度上加快了对局的节奏,但优化了手机端的操作手感,并且对一些手机上较难操控的技能做出了一定的调整,就整体而言还是和端游没有太大差别。bob综合体育彩票early part of the century with The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones opened an opportunity for fantasy to migrate from the page to the screen. And as the genre s prestige rose thanks to GoT, Pullman came to view television as a better place for his material to reach an audience. In 2015, BBC One commissioned an eight-episode adaptation of the trilogy. Expected to arrive in 2017, little else happened besides writer Jack Thorne (National Treasure) telling the press that the program was still on its way.It suddenly burst to life the following year with Logan’s Dafne Keen signing on to play Lyra, The Danish Girl s Tom Hooper agreeing to direct the first two episodes, and Lin-Manuel Miranda taking on a role later revealed to be aeronaut Lee Scoresby. Soon after, James McAvoy, Clarke Peters, and Ruth Wilson joined the ensemble. After these announcements, HBO signed on as a co-producer and BBC One ordered a second season before the first had even been filmed.According to producer Jane Tranter — who is responsible for bringing Doctor Who back to TV and is now founder of Bad Wolf Production company — that decision was made to prevent Keen and the other child actors from aging out of the characters too quickly. There is a great thing in His Dark Materials of a girl going through puberty and we wanted to be able to pace that story out age-appropriately, she explained to reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in August.  And so, that’s why everyone — HBO and the BBC — went with us for 16 episodes. Wilson plays Mrs. Coulter while McAvoy plays Lord Asriel, two characters whose shared history will no doubt surprise viewers. Peters plays the Master of Jordan College, who also serves as Lyra’s guardian as the story begins. Other cast members include Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala, the witch played by Eva Green in the film; Anne-Marie Duff as Ma Costa; Ariyon Bakare as Carlo Boreal; Will Keen as Father MacPhail; Georgina Campbell as Adele Starminster; Lucian Msamati as John Faa; Lewin Lloyd as Lyra’s best friend, Roger Parslow; Tyler Howitt as Billy Costa; Amir Wilson as key character Will Parry; and Andrew Scott as his father, Col. John Parry.  Lending their voices to the various dæmons are Kit Connor as Pantalaimon; Helen McCrory as Stelmaria; David Suchet as Kaisa; Cristela Alonzo as Hester; and the show s lead puppeteer, Brian Fisher, providing sounds for Mrs. Coutler s otherwise mute — and unnamed — golden monkey dæmon. Joe Tandberg will voice Iorek Byrnison, the polar bear Lyra meets in the North.READ ALSO: Upcoming TV Fantasy Series That Could Be the Next Game of Thrones(Photo by HBO)HBO s plot description closely resembles that of the early Northern Lights chapters. Lyra’s search for a missing friend leads her to learn about Dust and the alternate worlds. It also goes out of its way to mention Will Parry, who will seemingly debut earlier than he does in the novel series. Based on the most recent trailer, Lyra s journey will closely mirror the one described in The Golden Compass. But with its emphasis on Asriel s conflict with the Magisterium, the preview also suggests viewers will become privy to certain motivations and issues far earlier than readers, who spend the entire first novel alongside Lyra and learning about the world(s) with her.Curiously, the controversies that dogged the film production have not returned with the series — or, at least, they have not resurfaced yet. Considering Pullman’s views on the church, it is only a matter of time before old quotes end up back in print and old opponents try to take the television series to task. If that proves to be the case, Tranter has a ready reply: [The series] is not an attack on religion. It is an attack on a particular form of organization. Which could always be true, but it is also easy to imagine HBO wants to court the controversies, which may lure viewers to watch this lavishly-produced rendition of the story. The new trailer even seems to poke at the beehive with its mentions of the Magisterium as a regressive organization. The Release DateThe long-awaited series will debut Monday, Nov. 4 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
After a run of Rotten disappointments in the early 2000s, horror maestro Wes Craven released airplane thriller Red Eye in 2005. It was acclaimed as a smarter-than-average, skillfully made terrorist thriller at the time – a two-hander about two strangers who meet on a plane, one a dedicated hotel employee, the other a sinister suit with a secret and a terrifying mission – and would be the late director s final Certified Fresh film. And yet the movie has been largely forgotten by many, and is rarely mentioned among Craven s best works. It s easy to see why: The director is synonymous with Freddie, and Ghostface, and violent 70s and 80s terrors; Red Eye was in many ways a conventional thriller, well done if slight, bearing little of Craven s trademarks at least on the surface. Look closer and the movie has the director s bloody fingerprints all over it, from his ability to expertly read and reflect a nation s current fears to his fine work with young, on-the-verge actors. And yes, he even gives us a great Craven crescendo. So, hear us out: It s time we remember Red Eye for what it is – one of the master of suspense s best works. Here s why.It Marked A Triumphant Comeback For the Legendary Director(Photo by © Dreamworks)Horror fans rightly revere Wes Craven as a legend, a master of horror, the man who gave us iconic and genre-defining works like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and The Hills Have Eyes. If there was a Mount Rushmore for scary movie guys, his face would be on it. But in a 40-year career there are always going to be misses among the hits, and Wes Craven’s filmography is about as bumpy as a desert road trip in a Wes Craven movie. (Remember Vampire In Brooklyn? Or My Soul to Take? Or The Hills Have Eyes 2? We do.)The director hit a particularly rough stretch of road following the success of Scream 2 and 1999’s kinda-sorta-well-received play at Oscar glory, Music of the Heart, an earnest inspirational-teacher drama starring Meryl Streep. In 2000, he released Scream 3, the first and only Rotten entry in that franchise, and followed that up with Cursed, a so-bad-it’s-actually-fabulous-in-retrospect attempt by Craven and Scream writer Kevin Williamson to revive the werewolf genre… by making a Scream rip-off with snouts. (Production was a complete mess on the project, largely thanks to interference from the Weinsteins, and it shows.)By 2005, the only way for Craven was up, and – cue airplane metaphor – Red Eye allowed him to soar. Liberated from studio interference and overwhelming expectations – he wasn’t being asked to close out a beloved trilogy or kickstart another subgenre renaissance – Craven brought his formidable talent for suspense to a smart and self-contained script by Carl Ellsworth, and showed his often too-unsung ability to bring the best out of young actors. Critically lauded as one of the tightest, most nerve-racking thrillers to come along in years, Red Eye was a reminder that the master still had a knack for terror – no matter the altitude. It’s Anchored By Two Great Performances (Photo by © Dreamworks)It’s a testament to Cillian Murphy’s skill as an actor that we don’t dismiss him – or the film, really – the instant we learn his villainous character’s name is “Jackson Rippner.” Murphy, whose 2005 would include his entrée into the mainstream playing Scarecrow in Batman Begins, is all alluring mystery as he flirts in the check-in line and over drinks at an airport bar, and when the script turns, he makes a seamless transition to pure menace. But the movie ultimately belongs to this two-hander’s other hand, Rachel McAdams, fresh off of The Notebook, showing the same steeliness and pluck audiences loved in that film as she tangles with an altogether different kind of male pursuer. Like Rippner, her Lisa undergoes a transformation as the plane races towards Miami: From exhausted daughter allowing herself a little fun to terrified prey, and, ultimately, resourceful final girl, and McAdams delivers on every note. By the time the film devolves to a Scream-a-like in its house-bound finale – or ascends to it, depending on your tastes – you find yourself rooting for her just as you would a bloodied, bruised, but still-standing Sidney Prescott or Nancy Thompson. It Perfectly Captures the Nightmare of Post 9/11 Travel(Photo by © Dreamworks)Craven was an expert when it came to perfectly encapsulating an era s fears, and Red Eye is no exception. Flying in the years after 9/11 was a source of serious anxiety for many Americans onto whose brains the images of that tragic day were still freshly etched. That anxiety was stoked throughout the 2000s by reports of unsuccessful terrorist attempts – Richard Reid’s failed shoe-bombing among the earliest – involving commercial flights and airports. The palpable national fear around air travel led to many things: The time-consuming security measures we undergo when we fly; some awful racial profiling by passengers and authorities; and, of course, several movies that tried to mine that fear for cinematic thrills. In 2005, Red Eye did just that, along with the bigger-budget Flightplan, starring Jodie Foster as a mother who wakes up mid-flight to discover her six-year-old daughter has disappeared. (Author side note: On a flight back in 2005 I was awakened mid-flight BY Jodie Foster lightly bumping my shoulder as she took her child to the bathroom!) But Red Eye was the more successful of the two, critically if not commercially, because it hit the nerve harder and more directly. Where Flightplan’s tale was complicated, confused, and conspiracy-focused, Red Eye was born directly from the very simple questions many travelers were sweatily asking themselves as they took their seats: Who am I sitting next to? What if I’m on that flight? Would I fight back – or cower? The movie also gets the more general horrors of modern-day air travel spot on, with nods to the draconian security process – “Flying’s so much fun these days!” – and one of cinema’s most realistic renderings of coach class. Just watching Lisa squeeze herself down the aisle as other customers sardine themselves into the cabin, over-stuff the overhead, and, in one particularly visceral cutaway, slurp up a box of noodles… I shiver every time. It’s A Not-So-Veiled Dig At Corporate America(Photo by © Dreamworks)In one sense, Red Eye is a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a psychotic terrorist and a resourceful final girl; in another, it’s about two cogs in two different corporate machines trying to satisfy their employers and getting in each others’ way in the process. Because that really is the crux of what the two characters are doing: Lisa, the ever-diligent employee, who’s seen constantly solving problems for her mega hotel and its customers, is willing to risk her own father’s life to try to avoid harm coming to either; Jack is the mid-level manager who’s been given an assignment – get Lisa to change the room – and will stop at nothing to keep a client satisfied. The client just happens to be some sort of terrorist organization.Jack in particular becomes a kind of maniacal embodiment of make-the-sale-at-any-cost corporate culture – he’s the knife-wielding version of a Wall Street banker in some respects – and at one point leans in to tell Lisa they may not be so different. “I never lied to you, Leese,” he says, as she struggles for air. “Know why? ’Cause it doesn’t serve me. We’re both professionals. We have the will and means to follow through. ’Cause when we don’t, our customers aren’t happy. And when they’re not, we suffer and our lives go to s .” I swear I ve read that in a corporate training packet somewhere The Ending Is Bonkers, In a Good, Polarizing, and Craven-y WayAt the time of its release, a number of critics pointed out that the thriller’s finale feels out-of-step with the taut, disciplined film that precedes it; when the plane lands, the intimate suspense Craven built up in the fuselage is traded in for an elaborate chase sequence that takes us through the airport and eventually to Lisa’s father’s house where Rippner grabs a knife and gets all Ghostface on us. There’s hiding behind walls, and creaking doors, and falling while running away, and a pretty great he’s-behind-the-door jump scare. It s all a bit ridiculous. Why does it work? Because for all of its incisive mining of post-9/11 fears, its light social commentary, and its tight script, Red Eye has an air of the ridiculous right from the get-go. Everything in the film is heightened to an almost surreal, wink-wink level: Think Jayma Mays’ hilariously frazzled hotel receptionist; Colby from Survivor showing up as a cartoonishly stoic bodyguard; almost every other passenger on the flight rendered as if plucked from an SNL skit; and the overall terrorist plot itself. Just when you think that having a government official moved to a penthouse suite so that it’s easier for terrorists to blow up his room with a surface-to-air missile is straining credulity, said terrorists retrieve their missile by fishing it out of the water with… a few regular fishing rods. The movie’s climax is only out of step if you weren’t paying attention to the movie itself. It is excessive, and, yes, it has more than just echoes of Craven’s previous work, but it’s also a release; the director eschews a tighter, neater, subtler ending to give the audience what they want, making a meal of the tension he s built throughout and throwing on a second dessert of slasher fun just because he can.And Craven can, which is the other exciting thing about this finale. It is tense and scary and delicious. After two public failures, and with his ability to jolt us out of our skin in question, the master gives us 15 minutes of what he does best, reminding us he s indeed still a master. Just because he can.Red Eye was released on August 19, 2005.

7.15.7 7月喜迎(Photo by Screen Gems. Thumbnail: Warner Bros /courtesy Everett Collection.)The Worst Remakes of All Time, According to the TomatometerSecond time s the harm for these Rotten remakes, proving that some movies are so nice, no need to make them twice. From a sand-in-your-pants Madonna vehicle to plenty of horror (especially remakes of international features), each critically-trashed film here scored less than 10% on the Tomatometer, so these are the biggest misses among misguided movie ventures. And they re all gathered to be scorned in perpetuity in our guide to the worst remakes of all time.
The first trailer for next summer’s Wonder Woman 1984 is finally here and, frankly, it’s about time. Originally scheduled for release last month, the movie was held to a summer 2020 release, indicating a great deal of confidence in the film. And judging from the trailer, we can see why. In the trailer we learn that Diana (Gal Gadot) comes to the United States in the early part of the 1980s, but that mogul Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) have other designs for Wonder Woman’s time there. And beyond the quality of filmmaking teased in the trailer – that moment with the bullet in the White House looks incredible! – we gleaned a few interesting takeaways from the trailer and what it means for the film. Let’s take a look at what we learned.1. Diana and Cheetah Begin As Friends But It Won t Last(Photo by © Warner Bros. )The pleasant conversation between Diana and Barbara overlooking the Washington D.C. skyline certainly sounds friendly. And it seems the film will open with Wonder Woman and her classic adversary, Cheetah, as friends. Although, it is possible this is a big ruse on Barbara’s part. In DC Comics’s lore, she was an archeologist pathologically obsessed with owning the Lasso of Truth. Her first attempt to obtain it was by becoming Diana’s friend. But the Lasso forced her to tell Diana the truth, which turned out to be a deeper wound than the Amazon had experienced before. At the same time, the glimpses of Wiig in the trailer recall earlier versions of the Cheetah, namely the Golden Age’s Priscilla Rich, a debutante with a split personality. She first became Cheetah after Diana upstaged her more self-important persona at a charity event. The Cheetah, a new person formed to process the rage, took control and vowed to end Diana’s life. Thanks to wacky comic-book hi-jinks, Barbara would end Rich’s life before Rich was completely eliminated from reality – the name remaining as one of Barbara’s aliases. From the dowdy Barbara glimpsed at the top of the tra

(Photo by Sarah Shatz/Netflix)Author Jenny Han is an expert on crushes, romances and meet-cutes. In addition to other titles in her catalog, her To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before book trilogy is an international best-seller that has inspired three Netflix movies – the last of which, To All the Boys: Always and Forever, was released February 12 on the streaming channel. Peppered with references, both vague and blatant, to its rom-com ancestors, the films follow Lana Condor’s high schooler Lara Jean Covey and her commitment to baked goods, her sisters, and, eventually, her near-perfect boyfriend, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). So it isn’t really a surprise that Han is frequently asked about her favorite romantic comedies.“I ve gone back and forth over it, but for me, my favorite that I can turn on and it puts me in a good mood and it s just comforting is Bridget Jones s Diary,” Han says of the Renée Zellweger film. “I think it s a gold standard. And I mean, there s a reason she (Zellweger) was nominated for an Academy Award for that.”And, as anyone who has read Han’s books or seen the To All the Boys movies knows, she says she “love(s) love triangles.” Han says that the one in Bridget Jones particularly works because the two potential suitors, Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver, both “feel like legitimate options, even though Daniel is a cad.”This isn’t to say that Han has seen every romantic comedy ever. She tried watching Broadcast News on a plane and failed and says that “I don t think I fully appreciated” Heartburn because she saw it as a kid when a friend’s older sister had rented it. Han remembers that she “drifted away from the television” thinking that the relationship dynamic between Meryl Streep’s Rachel Samstat and Jack Nicholson’s Mark Forman “seems messed up.” (She was not wrong.)It’s even debatable whether or not those two movies are even romantic comedies – something that also happens a lot to movies about teens.“For instance, I would say that Breakfast Club gets shelved in romantic comedy,” Han says. However, “I don t really think it s that romantic. I think, with a teen love story, oftentimes it s a lot more about their whole life and family and stuff. And I think, oftentimes, with adult romantic comedies, it s really more about the romance. And so I think coming-of-age can be shelved also in romantic comedy.”Read on for a list of some movies (and one TV show!) that are some of Han’s favorite romantic comedies – even if her definition of the term may be up for debate.

Everyone likes a good horror franchise with an iconic villain who preys upon a new group of innocents in every installment. The problem, though, is that they start to run out of steam after a handful of installments. No matter how good Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, or Friday the 13th are, eventually we get something like The Revenge of Michael Myers, The Dream Child, or Jason Goes to Hell. But there’s one franchise that, in the wake of Scream, utilized humor to help revitalize the slasher genre at the outset of the new millennium and made audiences afraid of literally everything, and it all began with 2000 s Final Destination.Even if the franchise isn t the most critically acclaimed, its very concept seems clearly built to be a lasting enterprise. Final Destination boasts a villain you can never beat and a series of kill scenes that only get more inventive with each installment. For its 20th anniversary, we’re getting off the plane to tell everyone how Final Destination kicked off the best horror franchise of the 2000s.IT WEAPONIZES ANXIETY AND MAKES THE MUNDANE DEADLYFrom its opening title sequence, the original Final Destination plays on the idea of anxiety and paranoia in everyday life. We meet Alex (Devon Sawa) as he’s preparing for a class trip to France, revising his schedule for the flight, when he suddenly freaks out at the idea of his mother removing the luggage tag from his last flight because it would bring him bad luck. From then on, both Alex and the audience see ominous signs everywhere, from a faulty alarm clock to the sudden cancellation of a bunch of flights to the sign with the gate number breaking. These omens culminate in a premonition of the plane exploding shortly after take-off and killing everyone on board. Those kinds of accidents are exceedingly rare, of course, but it’s easy to sympathize with the idea that when you’re anxious about something like flying, everything feels ominous.Even before Final Destination gets to its convoluted, Rube Goldberg-like death traps, the films weaponizes very real fears, and that’s what makes the horror of the film follow you home and haunt you for days. Unlike a supernatural horror movie that depends on its victims being trapped in a haunted house or a slasher where the villain is a masked killer, the horror of Final Destination only feels like pure fiction until you’re driving home behind that truck carrying flammable gases, or you re walking down the street and nearly trip over an uneven bit of pavement, or you realize your bathroom floor is extra slippery right as you enter the shower. From the big, opening premonition sequences that set each of the movies in motion to the bizarre and very bloody “accidental” deaths that follow, the Final Destination franchise takes advantage of your actual fears and turns them into your worst nightmares.Suddenly you realize that not living anywhere near Camp Crystal Lake won’t save you, and that not moving into a haunted house won’t prevent you from dying a horrible death, because the villain here can’t be defeated, and it’s coming for us all.THERE IS NO VILLAIN, AND NO ESCAPEBirth.Movies.Death’s Brian Collins said it best when we wrote that one of the most surprising things about Final Destination was the way the film became such a successful franchise despite its lack of a villain you could commercialize. The iconic hockey mask from Friday the 13th and the glove adorned with knives from A Nightmare on Elm Street are massively marketable props that helped their respective franchises stay alive. But when it comes to Final Destination, there are no action figures or costumes for the film’s villain, because there is no villain in the traditional sense. The antagonist is the concept of Death itself, and we re not talking about the Grim Reaper with his hood and sickle, but an unseen force that subtly (or not-so-subtly) gives objects a tiny little push in increasingly convoluted ways to ultimately lead to someone’s demise. Sure, the series tapped Candyman star Tony Todd to play the mysterious mortician Bludworth and lend the films some horror cred, but he s more of a cheeky messenger than a harbinger of evil. And yet, as fun as it is, this franchise is as existential and grim as it gets. In most horror movies, there are rules you can follow to survive, as Scream taught us in 1996. Slasher movies in particular act as sort of morality tales, with characters who behave badly facing divine justice in the form of a bloody demise. Final Destination is so terrifying because there is literally no escape. Even when the characters think they ve found a loophole and manage to outlive death’s design, something else happens, and they all meet their gruesome ends. There is no hope for survival because, while you can outrun a man with a knife, solve Jigsaw’s puzzles, or exorcise a demon, you can’t outrun Death forever.THE SCARES ARE BALANCED WITH HUMOR(Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)Final Destination knows that scares and laughs go hand in hand, and no matter how grim the tone of the film is, it is always accompanied by a wicked gallows humor that provides a nice release of tension. The films are brightly colored, they are fast-paced, and even many of the kills are so ridiculously elaborate that they make you laugh.Much like Freddy Krueger in the latter Nightmare films, Death in Final Destination has a dark and sadistic sense of humor. It’s not enough to simply die – though the beauty of the first film is that the deaths are so simple you could easily see yourself falling for those tricks – but Death wants to make fun of you with a brutal, gory, and preposterously untimely demise, like a barbed-wired fence that whips loose and cuts you to pieces. Tanning beds, gym weights, elevators, laser eye surgery, trains anything can be used to kill a character. This gave the Final Destination franchise endless possibilities to do whatever it wanted when it came to death scenes; on the other hand, there are only so many ways Jason Voorhees can dispatch a teenager with a machete.Indeed, after the original movie, the sequels found delight in tricking the audience as they guessed how the characters would die. The film would introduce an obvious Chekhov s gun, usually in the form of the protagonist having a vision, as in Final Destination 2 when Kimberly (A.J. Cook) notices a bunch of pigeons. Then the film shows the soon-to-be victim surrounded by said clue, as when Tim (James Kirk) sits in a dentist’s office full of dangerous equipment and watches the same pigeons fly in through the window – only for him to leave the dentist unscathed and fall victim to a giant glass pane that drops on him from above, crushing him. The film builds tension in making us think Tim will die at the dentist’s office, and when he actually meets his end, the over-the-top look of his crushed, unnaturally twisted body quickly turns the shock into a punchline.THE SEQUELS ADD TO THE MYTHOLOGY(Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)Each of the four sequels follows the same formula: a group of people managed to elude their own deaths, only to find themselves targeted by Death in the weeks to follow, hunted one by one in the order they would have originally died. However, each movie adds a bit of a twist to the way the survivors try to outrun their fates, building its mythology along the way.In the first film, we discover that if you save someone’s life, Death skips them and goes after the next in line. Final Destination 2 brings back Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) from the first one to continue her arc and introduces the idea that new life cancels out death, while the third movie adds a magic camera that offers clues to how each character will die. Final Destination 5 makes the threat more human, as the characters believe killing another person will balance Death s book. Even The Final Destination, which is considered the worst of the franchise, adds a fascinating new question: what if someone who isn’t the next in line tries to kill themselves? The answer, apparently, is that they won’t be able to.Final Destination managed to stay fresh because it didn’t contradict its mythology, but added to it, providing new twists that made the series feel new each time. Few franchises, horror or otherwise, can boast that kind of inventiveness.IT IS THE BEGINNING AND THE END OF THE FRANCHISE(Photo by Doane Gregory/Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)A potential future installment could change things, of course, but for the time being, Final Destination has the rare honor of being one of the handful of horror franchises to have not just an ending, but a satisfying one that brings everything full-circle and ties it all together. In Final Destination 5, after the ominous Bludworth introduces the idea of balancing the books by killing an innocent person to inherit that person’s lifespan, we get what appears to be the very first happy ending in the franchise, as Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) presumably saves Molly (Emma Bell) and himself by killing one of the other survivors. The film sees them move on with their lives by taking a trip to Paris. As they board the plane, they notice some commotion across the aisle involving none other than Devon Sawa s Alex from the first film. Right then, the plane takes off and we revisit the very same explosion that kickstarted the original Final Destination, as audiences realize they ve been watching a prequel all along. It’s a clever way to bring the franchise back to where it started and wrap it all up with a nice little bow, and even if we never get another Final Destination, we’ll always have this ending, which once again shows that you can never really escape Death’s deliciously macabre design.Where You Can Watch It NowNetflix (subscription): Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, The Final DestinationAmazon (rent/own): Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, The Final Destination, Final Destination 5FandangoNOW (rent/own): Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, The Final Destination, Final Destination 5Google (rent/own): Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, The Final Destination, Final Destination 5iTunes (rent/own): Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, The Final Destination, Final Destination 5Vudu (rent/own): Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, The Final Destination, Final Destination 5Final Destination was released on March 17, 2000.

This Week s Ketchup brings you another eight headlines from the world of film development news (those stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering up-and-coming titles like Black Adam, Cinderella, Django/Zorro, and Magic 8-Ball.This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM HOLLAND S UNCHARTED MOVIE DATED FOR 2020(Photo by Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images)Tom Holland, the star of next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, obviously has one of the biggest franchises going right now (both the Spider-Man movies and the MCU at large). That doesn t mean, however, that he can t start building other franchises for his filmography. Perhaps surprisingly for his age (23), that next big role for Tom Holland is Nathan Drake, the star of Sony s Uncharted video game franchise. (It appears that, as with Alicia Vikander s Tomb Raider reboot, the first Uncharted movie might be a prequel or origin story.) The movie has been in development for a while, but Sony Pictures has confirmed production by announcing a release date of December 18, 2020. By aiming for that weekend, Sony is directly taking on Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake and Eddie Murphy s Coming to America sequel. The Uncharted video games combine elements of Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, and arguably Nicolas Cage s National Treasure movies. The first Uncharted movie will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who made his debut in 2016 with 10 Cloverfield Lane (Certified Fresh at 90%).Fresh Developments1. QUENTIN TARANTINO S DJANGO TO CROSSOVER WITH ZORRO(Photo by Andrew Cooper/Weinstein Company)Much has been written in the last year or so about Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (7/26/2019) (currently Fresh at 94%) and his possible Star Trek plans, but another old rumor was confirmed this week with the news that Tarantino is also producing (but probably won t direct) what s basically a sequel to his 2012 Southern Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx as the title character. As appealing as such a sequel might be on its own, the title takes it to another level, because Django/Zorro would cross the character over with the Californian freedom fighter who is celebrating his 100th anniversary this year. Quentin Tarantino has enlisted comedian-turned-screenwriter Jerrod Carmichael, of TV s The Carmichael Show, to adapt the Dynamite Entertainment and Vertigo Comics comic book of the same title.2. SIMON PEGG AND NICK FROST REUNITING TO PRODUCE HORROR MOVIE SVALTA(Photo by Rogue Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)From 2004 to 2013, British comic actors Simon Pegg (a.k.a. Scotty from Star Trek and Benji from the Mission:Impossible movies) and Nick Frost starred in director Edgar Wright s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World s End), and also co-starred together in other films like Paul and The Adventures of Tintin. We should note right away that they re not yet confirmed to be starring in this week s new project, but they are producing the film together. Pegg and Frost have sold a horror pitch called Svalta to Orion Pictures, with Frost also attached as the film s screenwriter. Svalta will tell the story of a family on their summer vacation to a remote Swedish island [called Svalta] where they discover a serial killer is on the loose, but the locals have no interest in helping the stranded family of tourists. 3. NEW PROJECTS FOR MAHERSHALA ALI AND BARRY JENKINS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Steve Mack/Everett Collection)In 2016, Mahershala Ali and director Barry Jenkins took home a trio of Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for their collaborative work on the coming-of-age drama Moonlight, and both of their stars have only risen higher since. Accordingly, each of them made headlines with new film projects this week. Mahershala Ali is now attached to executive produce and star in a Fox Searchlight true story drama called Solitary. The film will be adapted from a memoir by Albert Woodfox, who spent 43 years in solitary confinement at Louisiana s notorious Angola Prison. Barry Jenkins new film is also set up at Fox Searchlight, and it will be an untitled biopic about acclaimed dance choreographer Alvin Ailey.4. POP STAR CAMILA CABELLO S CINDERELLA SCHEDULED FOR 2021 (Photo by Steve Mack/Everett Collection)Sony Pictures is moving forward with plans for a new version of the fairy tale Cinderella starring Camila Cabello, a Cuban-American pop star who got her start as a contestant on The X-Factor in 2012, as the studio officially scheduled the film for release on February 5, 2021. That puts it one week after the Rugrats reboot movie (1/29/2021) and one week before Marvel Studios first movie in 2021 (we don t know which movie that is yet). This new Cinderella will be directed by Blockers (Certified Fresh at 83%) Kay Cannon, who this week also made the news for a project called 79ers. That movie is being produced by Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen and is described as being like The Goonies for adults, following a group of friends who are forced to reunite 20 years later after failing to finish a treasure hunt as teenagers.5. BILL SKARSGARD TO SPEND NINE DAYS WITH VARIOUS MARVEL MOVIE CO-STARS(Photo by Brooke Palmer/Warner Bros.)It s not that uncommon that the same actor or filmmaker shows up in more than one new project in a given week, but this week we saw this happen a few times. Let s start here with a supernatural thriller called Nine Days, in which Black Panther and Us star Winston Duke will play a mysterious man who interviews prospective candidates, a personification of human souls for the privilege that he once had. (This writer doesn t quite know what that even means, but there you go.) Those personifications will be played by Zazie Beetz (Domino from Deadpool 2), Benedict Wong (Wong from Doctor Strange), and Bill Skarsgård (a.k.a. Pennywise from IT). The repeat star in this case is Bill Skarsgård, who also signed on this week to star in a true crime drama called Gilded Rage.6. PETER DINKLAGE SAYS I CARE A LOT (Photo by HBO)Going into the final episodes of Game of Thrones, it seemed likely that the show s various stars would be riding career highs and that the casting stories would be chock-ablock with their names. That, however, was until everyone saw those last two episodes, which seemed to put the brakes on eight seasons of fan and critical love. Having said that, the stars of the show are obviously talented, and they should be just fine. Case in point: Peter Dinklage, GoT s Tyrion Lannister, joined Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike in a thriller called I Care a Lot. Pike will star as a legal guardian (a lawyer or a foster parent, it s unclear), but Dinklage s character is being kept secret.7. TWO YOUNG NETFLIX STARS CAST AS THE DAUGHTERS OF BILL TED FACE THE MUSIC (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)The last time we saw Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted Logan (Keanu Reeves) in 1991 s Bill Ted s Bogus Journey, the rock stars of the band Wyld Stallyns seemed to be riding high, including happy relationships with their princess girlfriends plucked from medieval times. It s still unclear what all happened to Bill and Ted in the last 25+ years, but this week, we learned that their characters both now have teenage daughters. Those roles will be played by Netflix stars Samara Weaving (The Babysitter) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical) when Bill Ted Face the Music next summer (8/21/2020).Rotten Ideas2. DWAYNE JOHNSON REUNITING WITH JUNGLE CRUISE DIRECTOR FOR BLACK ADAM (Photo by Vince Valitutti/Columbia Pictures)Disney s Jungle Cruise, based on their long-running theme park ride, doesn t come out until next July (7/24/2020), so most people probably don t even know it s in the works. (FYI, Disney also recruited their Mary Poppins Returns star, Emily Blunt, to take that cruise as well.) Nevertheless, Dwayne Johnson must ve had great things to say about his Jungle Cruise director, because Jaume Collett-Serra has now been recruited by New Line Cinema to reunite with Johnson on Black Adam. Johnson has long been attached to star in the DC Comics adaptation, including a time when he would have co-starred in Shazam! as the immortal Egyptian villain-turned-antihero Black Adam. (It s arguable that Mark Strong s Dr. Sivana filled the role Black Adam would have.) Jaume Collett-Serra s Tomatometer is mostly comprised of Rotten splotches, but he did receive Fresh scores for Non-Stop and The Shallows. Hopefully these next two collaborations with Dwayne Johnson will yield better results.1. MAGIC 8 BALL GETTING ITS OWN BLUMHOUSE HORROR FRANCHISE(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Relativity Media courtesy Everett Collection)Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and Hasbro Films had two relative hits with Ouija and its prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil. With that in mind, Blumhouse and Universal are uniting with another toy company, Mattel, on a similar project, this time based on Magic 8-Balls. We can all shake our Magic 8-Balls to see what it says about a Magic 8-Ball movie, but one thing that suggests outlook not so good is that the director Blumhouse and Universal have hired for the job is Jeff Wadlow. Of the six feature films on Wadlow s, not one has received a Fresh score, with 2013 s superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2 earning the highest score at 32% on the Tomatometer. Jeff Wadlow s next film before taking on Magic 8-Ball will be the movie adaptation of the long-running ABC supernatural drama Fantasy Island, starring Michael Peña as the new Mr. Roarke.Like this?
