This week s TV news brings updates on highly anticipated sci-fi series, Lifetime movies, prestige dramas, and more.Harley Quinn Star Kaley Cuoco Explains the Series Blurred Line DC Universe s upcoming animated series Harley Quinn, about the character introduced in the animated Batman series, is decidedly not for kids. There are plenty of f-bombs dropped by the characters, but there is one particular word that gets bleeped instead. In a show that is packed to the gills with foul language, said executive producer Patrick Schumacker, we wanted to — well, I mean, here’s what I will say: That episode involves a certain villain, voiced by Tony Hale, who is ousted from the Legion of Doom, because using the C-word is not their brand of evil. And so we wanted to make sure that everyone was aware that that is the one word — well, there are probably other words that we should bleep out as well, but we haven’t incorporated those in. Added star Kaley Cuoco, who voices the titular character, That’s the one. It’s a really blurred line. The character s back story includes an abusive, dysfunctional relationship with the Joker, which executive producer Justin Halpern said will be explored in the animated series. That is something that we felt we needed to address in the show, he said. The idea was that we’ve all been in relationships with someone that we felt maybe wasn’t right for us all the way to someone that was toxic for us, and how you extricate yourself from that is really what this show’s about. How do you get out of that kind of relationship and then figure out, what am I gonna do now that I’m out of it? What do I want? I’ve been living somebody else’s life for a really long time. And so that is something we really wanted to tackle. We didn’t want to shy away from it. His Dark Materials Will Bring One Book Per Season to TVHBO s series adaptation of Philip Pullman s His Dark Materials novels is designed essentially as a trilogy, writer Jack Thorne told reporters at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills, with the story of one book being told per season. Largely, it’s one book per season, he said. There are a few treats I’ve stolen from future books that I’ve tried to infuse this season with — to give that away would be to give away some quite big secrets, so I can’t quite do that here. But the whole thing was looking at the whole story, three books, and going, How did Philip think of them like this? And how can we celebrate them in the best possible way? And sometimes, that celebration involved moving certain elements forward. Ultimately, though, Thorne and executive producer Jane Tranter wanted to stay as faithful as possible to the book series. Sometimes when you’re doing an adaptation of things, there’s a moment when you kind of feel like you know everything there is to know, Thorne said. With Philip, you never can. And we had him on our shoulder all the way through to sort of guide us through that. But, you know, it’s a very, very challenging show to write. And but also a glorious show to write. HBO Addresses Big Little Lies Season 2 DramaAfter an explosive story about behind-the-scenes drama on Big Little Lies, HBO is backing the series creative team. An expose in IndieWire accused the series of wrestling creative control from season 2 director Andrea Arnold, instead giving editing duties back to season 1 director and executive producer Jean-Marc Vallee and cutting her out of the process. But HBO boss Casey Bloys told reporters this week that the story was untrue. There wouldn t be a second season of Big Little Lies without Andrea. We re indebted to her, he said, but as anybody who works in television knows, the director typically doesn t have final creative control so the idea that creative control was taken from her is a false premise. Bloys said that Arnold turned in director s cuts for all seven of her episodes, after which showrunner David E. Kelley and the entire producing team — Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon included — asked Vallee and his team to come in and hone the installments after. It s not unusual at all to ask an executive producer to come in and hone the episodes, Bloys said, adding, I would be hard-pressed to point to any show that airs a director s cut as its episode. How Does The Terror: Infamy Tie Into Season 1?The first season of AMC s The Terror was based on a thousand-page novel. But season 2 of the now-anthology series, The Terror: Infamy, has its very own mystery. The DNA we share with season 1 of The Terror is that it’s an historical story told with a genre of vocabulary, and in both cases it’s about a group of people who are in a place where they are not welcome, and where the human terror is as palpable as the supernatural terror, showrunner Alexander Woo told reporters at TCA summer press tour. But from the beginning the strategy was to use the horror of Japanese kaidan, or ghost stories, and the Japanese horror movies that are descended from it as an analog for the terror of the historical experience, so you really feel like what it’s like to be in the skin of these characters. Added star Derek Mio, I think what’s great about our season that expands upon the first season is the monster in our season has her own story, back-story and motivations, and that just adds a whole other layer to it. It’s as if the tuunbaq had its own origin story. Why Mr. Mercedes Skipped Over Book 2 in Stephen King s SeriesAT T Audience Network s Mr. Mercedes is based on Stephen King s Bill Hodges trilogy, but the second season skipped over the second book in the series. Now, with season 3, it s circling back to the Finders Keepers story. At the end of season one, because the focus of the show was this love/hate affair between Brady Hartsfield and Bill Hodges, and because of the condition we left our hero villain, played by Harry Treadaway — almost comatose after his head was bashed in — we had to figure out a way to have him in the show in an active way, explained executive producer Jack Bender. And we all — the writers, myself, all of us — came up with a version that wasn’t going to be this Finders Keepers, and we knew we were going to have to put that off and found a way to make that the focus of season 3. I’m very proud of our show every season, but I believe is our strongest season. Starting with two brothers, a beloved Chevy Impala, and some demon-hunting equipment, Supernatural defied the odds to become one of the longest-running primetime shows in television history. It is also one of the few genre shows to break the tenth season mark, joining the classic Doctor Who in a very rarefied club of long, continuous production runs. When Rotten Tomatoes spoke with the cast and producers during a celebration of the program’s 300th episode, they all credited its longevity to two factors: first, stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, and second, the on-set family dynamic that now includes a large stable of recurring characters and eventual co-leads like Misha Collins.“I think that my favorite [aspect] is the growing family dynamic of the show where the core cast, which used to be just Sam and Dean, has really become a legitimate group of people who very much love each other and care about each other,” said executive producer Brad Buckner. That family feel was on display in the 300th episode, which aired last month, but it left us wondering where the show can go now. Have the Winchesters driven every highway, rural route, private drive, parkway and surface street in their never-ending relationship with forces beyond imaging? The CW doesn’t think so, considering the network has already renewed the program for a historic 15th season. But let’s take a look at some directions Supernatural could go next.Alien Invasion(Photo by Mars Attacks!: ©Warner Bros./Courtesy Everett Collection; Supernatural: Dean Buscher/The CW)To be sure, this is a pie-in-the-sky idea considering creator Eric Kripke s stated rule that aliens do not exist in the Supernatural universe. Over the years, the show has poked fun at its slight similarities to The X-Files via a handful of episodes in which aliens turn out to be fairies or frauds. It is a completely understandable decision as the show is literally called Supernatural. You really don’t expect to see E.T. or grey aliens plotting with Rowena (Ruth Connell) or Alternate Michael (various actors including Ackles). But now that the image is in your mind, consider this little thought experiment: What if they suddenly arrived and defied everyone’s assumption that they were not real. What if the angels and demons had no knowledge of them and could not account for their existence? Suddenly, the assumed political paradigm of the cosmos is upended because God never mentioned that he created other life in the universe. Alliances would have to be made, as well.It leads to plenty of questions. Are the aliens bound by the same rules of engagement? Do they have their own versions of angels and demons to contend with? Are there alien equivalents of Heaven and Hell? In which case, does each sentient alien race have one of its own and why would God make things so complicated? For the boys, it would start with disbelief and, no doubt, an eventual alliance with at least one extraterrestrial. Similarly, their adversaries would be looking for the angle immediately. And that s before the show even thinks to introduce a second alien species. But on a larger scale, it would be interesting to see all of these impossibly old spirits lose their sense of security because a completely unknown element is in orbit above the Earth.Yeah, it’s a reach, but it would be a funny one.A Return to the Road(Photo by Sergei Bachlakov/The CW)Since season 8, the Winchesters have had a place to call home within the bunker formerly used by the Men of Letters. It offers them a respite from their investigations even if it comes under attack from within and without all the time. But when it was first introduced, it was meant to change one key element of the show: Sam and Dean’s eternal journey across the country solving weird events. Six years later, it feels like the boys could lose the bunker and roam around essentially homeless. The material to write that story is there and, really, losing the sense of security the Bunker offers would be a huge shock to their systems — even more shocking than Sam or Dean getting possessed again. And since it seems neither brother will ever have any semblance of a domestic life, removing their sense of home would reinforce that they are riding or dying together. This could go to the extreme of removing Castiel, Mary (Samantha Smith), and Jack (Alexander Calvert) — which would be a shocking turn at this point – but even if the five of them are forced to move from town to town, it could alter the program’s dynamic in unexpected and interesting ways.Monsters of Myth(Photo by Michael Muller/The CW)There was a time, 14 years ago, when the show was about Sam and Dean following up on urban legends and mythical creature sightings. Their dealings with Lucifer and the political structure of Heaven appeared later (even if it was seeded from the start). What if, suddenly, the forces of Heaven and Hell were gone? In the absence of demons and angels, wendigos, fairy folk, will-o -the-wisps, jiangshi, and other creatures could try to hold sway upon the Earth. One imagines they would try to fill the power vacuum left by the departed angels and demons. It would reframe Sam and Dean’s mission and, possibly, create an end point for their fight as they clear away all of the supernatural creatures. Of course, they would be faced with the existential reality that evil can originate in humans without any supernatural source, but then it would be a different show.Maybe that’s the Supernatural spin-off The CW would actually pick up to series. The Road No One Will Take(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)There is definitely one version of the show producers say they will never try to do: one in which either Sam or Dean is gone permanently.“The heart and soul of this show is really the relationship with the brothers,” executive producer Robert Singer told Rotten Tomatoes. “They just deliver and their personal relationship is so close. That really comes through on screen. I ve actually done shows where the two actors weren t quite as fond of each other, and I think that shows up on screen. But these guys are great and they just live in these characters and so it s easy for us to write for them.”Singer and Buckner both agreed that losing one of their leads would mean to end the show.As it happens, Supernatural even offered its own example of what the show would look like with a Winchester brother absent: The survivor leaves the life and settles down. Now, we would love to see Ackles in show where he is a retired hero trying to adjust to the humdrum suburban world, but we wouldn t want that show to be an AfterSupernatural style spin-off or, worse, a Padalecki-less season 16.Nonetheless, Supernatural keeps finding ways to keep its flame alive. It bends the Winchesters into impossible shapes, ports them over to alternate realities, and even reunites them with long-lost family. It also keeps the politics of the Heavens strange and compelling. Maybe that s enough fuel to get the Impala to season 20.Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Faces of Death, Indiana Jones 5, and Knives Out 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYKNIVES OUT SEQUEL ADDS FOUR BIG NAMES TO ITS CAST(Photo by JA, Jason Mendez, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) cast an impressive ensemble for his 2019 mystery thriller Knives Out (Certified Fresh at 97%) which included Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shnnon, and Lakeith Stanfield, among others. For the two upcoming sequels, Johnson, producer Ram Bergman, and star Daniel Craig made a deal with Netflix that will land each of them a record-breaking 0 million. This week, Johnson proceeded to cast up Knives Out 2 with the first four stars to join Daniel Craig, and three of them are Marvel Studios alumni. The fun started on Monday when, Dave Bautista (Drax from Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy) became the first new cast member announced, in what is basically a Spectre (Fresh at 63%) reunion, since Bautista and Craig faced off against each other in that James Bond film. The next day, Bautista and Craig were joined by Edward Norton, who was Marvel Studios The Incredible Hulk (Fresh at 67%) (before Mark Ruffalo took over the role). Wednesday marked the third day in a row with a Knives Out 2 casting announcement, namely Janelle Monáe (Antebellum), who is the only non-Marvel alumni in this batch. Finally, on Thursday, the sequel s fifth cast member was announced as Kathryn Hahn, who is coming off a great role in the Disney+ series WandaVision (Fresh at 92%). We don t know the name of Hahn s character yet, but it would really be something if turns out to be Kathryn Hahn All Along. Production of Knives Out 2 is scheduled to start in Greece later this summer, 2021.Other Top Headlines1. REGINA KING TO DIRECT MONSTER COMIC BOOK MOVIE BITTER ROOT (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Academy Award winning actress Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk, HBO s Watchmen) recently made her directorial debut with the historical drama One Night in Miami (Certified Fresh at 98%), and this week, she signed on for another period piece, although the similarities largely end there. King will direct the comic book adaptation Bitter Root, based on the Image Comics title about a monster-hunting family who take on an invasion of supernatural forces during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. King will also be one of the producers of Bitter Root, along with her sister Reina and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) and his Proximity Media company. The other part of the production deal is Legendary Entertainment, which recently gave us Godzilla vs Kong and produced the DC Comics movies 300, 300: Rise of an Empire, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, and Watchmen. On the acting front, Regina King also recently signed on to star in one of the three planned Shirley Chisholm biopics.2. PARASITE DIRECTOR BONG JOO-HO PLANNING ANIMATED UNDERWATER HORROR FILM (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho was the big winner at last year s Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film for Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%). We usually see big deals being made for Academy Award winners of that stripe, but Bong s victory lap in 2020 might have been slowed down significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic, which began spreading more widely right around that time last year. So this week s news might be coming a year later than it otherwise should have, but we can now report that Bong Joon-Ho is planning an animated action/horror film about deep sea creatures. This project isn t expected to be Bong s next film as director (probably due to the extended production times of animated features), which will instead be an English-language drama based on an undisclosed true event from 2016. As if those two projects won t keep Bong Joon-Ho busy enough, he is also producing an upcoming Parasite series for HBO Max.3. IDRIS ELBA TO STAY FROSTY IN EXTRACTION DIRECTOR S CHRISTMAS ACTION MOVIE (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)There was a time (basically the 20th century) when spec script sales were frequent and lucrative, but they have decreased in relevance in recent years, possibly because of the increase in license deals, remakes, and comic book adaptations. Spec script deals do, however, still happen occasionally, and this week screenwriter Tyler Marcesa sold his screenplay Stay Frosty to Warner Bros. in a deal worth more than a million dollars. This wasn t Marcesa s first screenplay sale, but thus far, none of his projects have been produced yet. Idris Elba is attached to star in the action movie Stay Frosty as a man who survives getting shot in the head and who then has to figure out why an assassin tried to kill him, all the while also trying to get home to his son for Christmas. So, it s a John Wick-style action movie that also has Christmas-movie elements, a la Die Hard. Stay Frosty will be directed by Sam Hargrave, a former Marvel Studios stunt coordinator who made his directorial feature film debut last year with Extraction (Fresh at 67%).4. BLACK PANTHER AND LOGAN CO-STARS JOIN INDIANA JONES 5(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection, FOX via Getty Images)As of this summer, it will be 13 years since the 2008 release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Certified Fresh at 78%), but Lucasfilm is finally preparing to film another installment we re currently calling Indiana Jones 5. The star will obviously be Harrison Ford (who will turn 80 sixteen days before Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to come out on July 29, 2022), and we ve also recently heard about the casting of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, and Thomas Kretchmann. This week, director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Ford v Ferrari) cast two more for Indiana Jones 5, including the actor who played the villain Donald Pierce in his Wolverine movie Logan (Certified Fresh at 93%), Boyd Holbrook. The other new cast member is Shaunette Renée Wilson, who played one of the Dora Milaje warriors in Black Panther. We don t know anything about the characters Holbrook or Wilson will be playing, partly because we also don t know anything about the premise, like, at all, at this point.5. 21 JUMP STREET DIRECTORS TO DEPICT THE EARLY STAGES OF COVID-19 IN THE PREMONITION (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are probably best known for their various animated projects they directed (Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie) or produced (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Mitchells vs The Machines), but they also directed two live-action films with 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street. What all of those movies have in common is that they re pretty light in tone, but this week, Lord and Miller are branching into more serious material with The Premonition, based on the recent book by journalist Michael Lewis. The Premonition tells the true story of the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and the experts who attempted to warn the world. The film is expected to focus on three characters: a biochemist, a public health worker, and a White House government worker. It s not yet known if some of the more famous figures working in the White House in 2019 and 2020 will also have roles in The Premonition, the tone of which is being compared to All the President s Men (Certified Fresh at 94%). In related news, Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is also developing an untitled thriller set during the COVID-19 pandemic.6. EUGENIO DERBEZ REMAKE OF FRENCH HIT THE VALET TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics courtesy Everett Collection)Hollywood remakes of foreign-language hits are nothing new, and this week we got news of another. In this case, the original film is the French comedy hit The Valet (La Doublure, Fresh at 70%),  about a wealthy executive who hires a parking valet to pose as his mistress s lover in order to prevent his wife from finding out about his affair. Eugenio Derbez (Overboard, Instructions Not Included) is already set to star in the remake as the valet, who, in a slight variation on the original, is hired by a movie star played by Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) to pose as her lover to cover up her relationship with a married man. The cast was filled out this week by Max Greenfield (TV s The Neighborhood, New Girl), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad), Marisol Nichols (Riverdale, Spiral), and Mexican star Carmen Salinas. This remake of The Valet will be directed by Richard Wong (Come As You Are, Certified Fresh at 95%), and the original was directed by Francis Veber, whose French films have frequently been remade in English, including The Birdcage, The Toy, and Dinner for Schmucks.7. DAVID TENNANT AND EMILIA CLARKE TO VOICE ANIMATED DISCWORLD MOVIE  (Photo by Abel Fermin, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Discworld is a popular series of over 40 fantasy novels by author Terry Pratchett, but so far, it has eluded adaptation. That may soon change, as the 28th book in the series, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, is about to be adapted as an animated film titled simply The Amazing Maurice. David Tennant (Doctor Who), who also starred in the Terry Pratchett series Good Omens, will voice the title character, and other roles will be voiced by Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Hugh Laurie (TV s House), Rob Brydon (The Trip), Gemma Arterton, Hugh Bonneville, Himesh Patel, and David Thewlis. The Amazing Maurice tells the story of a cat and his gang of talking rats who develop a scheme to fool humans and take their money. It s currently planned for release in the U.K. in 2022, but an American release is still also possible (if any U.S. distributor steps up to make such a deal).8. RUSSELL CROWE TO SHOW OFF HIS POKER FACE PLAYING POKER (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)The theatrical box office charts were obviously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic this past year, but there were still movies that saw release, such as the Russell Crowe drama Unhinged (Rotten at 48%). Released in August, Unhinged debuted at #2, ascended to #1, and spent over 10 weeks in the top five. Again, the success of Unhinged was aided by diminished competition, but it also shows that despite a deadly virus, there were millions of people who wanted to see a Russell Crowe movie in theaters, so by that standard, he is definitely still a movie star. Crowe recently wrapped filming of Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), and this week, he signed on to star in a gambling drama called Poker Face, which is about exactly what it sounds like. Crowe will play a tech billionaire who brings his childhood friends together at his Miami estate for some high stakes poker. Poker Face will be directed by Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury, Homefront, Kiss the Girls).9. CONTROVERSIAL 1980s VIDEO NASTY FACES OF DEATH TO BE REBOOTED   (Photo by Aquarius Releasing)The Internet has been an active element in how fans track movies for over 20 years now, so it s easy to forget that there was a time when fans were basically challenged to believe whatever they were told by a filmmaker. In the early 1980s, as the home video market was taking off, many horror fans discovered a title called Faces of Death (and its sequels), which purported to depict actual footage of various gruesome deaths (most of which were actually faked, although some weren t). Faces of Death seems, in that way, such an artifact of its own era, that it would resist any attempt at a reboot or a remake, but that is apparently exactly what is now planned by Legendary Entertainment (Godzilla vs Kong, The Dark Knight). What is being described as a 21st century makeover of Faces of Death is being developed by filmmakers Isa Mazzei and Danield Goldhaber, the team behind 2018 s Cam (Certified Fresh at 98%). Rather than a documentary -style format, the new Faces of Death will reportedly revolve around a female moderator of a YouTube-like website whose job is to weed out offensive and violent content and who herself is recovering from a serious trauma, who stumbles across a group that is re-creating the murders from the original film. The producers behind this Faces of Death reboot are also developing the Buck Rogers reboot.10. ENOLA HOLMES 2 IS OFFICIALLY IN THE WORKS(Photo by Legendary)Details are a mystery, appropriately enough, but Netflix has offered a very pretty Twitter tease about a follow-up to Enola Holmes, the 2020 movie that stars Millie Bobby Brown as the equally curious sister of Sherlock Holmes. The film, which was originally planned as a theatrical release, moved to Netflix when the streaming service picked up the distribution rights last year during the pandemic. Enola Holmes 2 will start out as a Netflix jam, with Stranger Things star Brown returning for the sequel, along with Henry Cavill, director Harry Bradbeer, and screenwriter Jack Thorne. Netflix is offering up no other facts, but since more than 75 million households watched the first movie when it premiered last September, that surely won’t deter fans from trying to scope them out. A good place to start: The Enola Holmes Mysteries, author Nancy Springer’s book series on which the movies are based. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.love爱博体育app下载Disney s first-ever theatrically released princess-movie sequel, Frozen II, is set to light up the box office ahead of the holidays when it hits theaters November 22. Ahead of the movie s release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez sat down with the key returning cast (Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff) as well as some newcomers to Arendelle (Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood) to talk about the movie s mega new songs and musical numbers, as well as to fantasy-cast the completely inevitable Frozen live-action remake. Plus, we spoke with the duo behind Frozen s original music, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, about the challenges of getting lightning to strike twice after the phenomenon of Let It Go.

Fall s First TV Pickup Is (Photo by Mark Seliger/FOX)While fall premieres are still happening — The CW’s Arrow isn’t back until Oct. 15 — networks are already beginning to decide which shows they re betting will be big. The first series to receive an order for additional episodes in its first season is Fox’s Prodigal Son, which will get nine more episodes for a full season total of 22. Incidentally, it was already the highest-rated new series on the main broadcast networks this season, with 8.5 million viewers tuning in to the premiere episode on various platforms (i.e. linear and streaming). Looks like HBO has big plans for its Game of Thrones universe — no, it s not a theme park (yet). Filmmaker Kevin Smith drops some Bat-gossip. John Wick creator and writer Derek Kolstad is serious about a Dungeons Dragons live-action series. The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke just got visibly excited about his Herogasm, Critics Choice Awards TV nominations are out, and more of the week s top TV and streaming news.TOP STORYAnother Game of Thrones Spin-off, Tales of Dunk and Egg, Is in Development at HBO(Photo by Robyn Beck / AFP via Getty Images; Random House )Disney+ has 734 Star Wars projects in the works (OK, we exaggerate a little), and HBO appears to be following the same plan to establish a signature franchise by developing another Game of Thrones prequel series, Tales of Dunk and Egg. Another prequel, House of the Dragon, is already in the works. The series, early in development and with no writers or cast yet attached, would be an hour-long drama based on a series of George R.R. Martin novellas that tell the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon V. Targaryen, 90 years before the time of the storyline in book series A Song of Ice and Fire, the source material for the Game of Thrones series. The three stories — The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010) — were collected into the 2015 book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is the source for the series. The Dunk and Egg series, a fan-favorite storyline, is a priority for HBO, but the series is not a lock for a spot in the cable netwo

Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: You shared a video on Instagram of you listening to Love Myself, your song from The High Note – and you seemed completely overjoyed and moved by hearing the song and sharing it with people. Why does it mean so much to you right now to be releasing a song?Tracee Ellis Ross: I think there s lots of pieces to it. Number one, this is a childhood dream that, somewhere along the way, turned into my biggest fear. And I faced that fear and walked through it. And although I had already done the recording and obviously had heard the song before, this was the moment that I was sharing it with people that don t know me.I think it s really important in our lives to celebrate big and small moments. And this felt like a big one for me. Somehow that Instagram Live felt incredibly intimate and also like a party. And I could have never expected that I would feel like that. I ve never really done an Instagram – I mean, I ve gone live for 10 seconds trying to figure out what Live means, but I ve never advertised and planned, you know, a live party and a sharing of something. And it felt so connected and wonderful. There were 10,000 people in there, but it was really special.I also think, in this very real time we re in, where there is so much heaviness, so much loss, so much grief, the loss of livelihoods, the loss of lives, all of this is going on a heaviness that my heart feels like so many other people, it felt really special to have a moment of lightness, a moment of joy, a moment of freedom, and a moment of sharing and connection. Although, in a different way than we are used to, it seemed to really be a moment of light in the middle of that. Then there s the fact that the message of the song is exactly a tonic for the times right now. And I feel like, put down your phone; it doesn t matter what other people think. It s like, what do you think of yourself? Love yourself. And that s the message of the movie. And it felt really special to share that. You know, the message being that no matter the time, no matter the age, the phase, the stage you are at your life, no matter your circumstances, or even people telling you to stay in your lane, it s never too late to go after what you want. It s never too late to be who you are, and it s always worth pursuing that.Rotten Tomatoes: I m sure there is some disappointment that this isn t hitting movie theaters as expected, but it s also a movie that is going to bring joy into people s homes. Is this a movie that s in some ways right for the moment we re in?Ross: You know, I can t really determine that. I think that s for everybody else to decide, but I do hope that this film brings them joy. It s a feel-good movie. It s not a heavy movie. It s a really feel-good empowering movie. And we know music reaches into our hearts. You know, we all thought it was going to be a movie theater theatrical release, but I think this movie is perfectly suited for being in your home. I think it can be shared with your loved ones or watched by yourself. I think people can make an event of it and get themselves a cocktail or put some lemonade in a stemmed glass. I feel like it s one of those movies that makes you go through all the emotions. There s laughter. There s tears. There s joy. And there s music. I mean, what more can you ask for? And there s fashion, by the way, which also is very helpful.Rotten Tomatoes: There was some very good fashion. There is a memorable scene where Grace is trying to clean out her closet, but can t part with anything. Are you like that in real life? Do you struggle to get rid of some of your favorite outfits, or are you a total Marie Kondo?Ross: I am. I am. I m not like Grace in a lot of ways – most ways. I don t share a lot with her. It was really fun to take on the persona of somebody who was larger-than-life like that. And I mean, one of my favorite moments of the movie, by the way, is when Maggie tells Grace that she s dating someone or something and she s like, Does he know about me? That killed me. I was like, wow, way to turn a moment in the wrong direction! So I am not at all like Grace, but I am in that way. It s hard for me to let go of my clothing. I love holding onto stuff. It s hard for me to say goodbye to it.Rotten Tomatoes: Finally, you ve grown up with musicians: Was there anyone who you turned to for advice on playing this role when you got it?Ross: I didn t. You know, the role was so beautifully written from its first incarnation. When I first read that first draft of the script,  it didn t require a lot of research to look elsewhere. Also, it s a world I come from, to a certain extent. There was a lot for me to draw on that just lives within my own experience. But the support that I got mostly came in the studio and in the recording process, which was one of the main places that I started to find who Grace was. And how to find her voice, which was combined with my voice. Rodney Jerkins, who is the producer – a very experienced and well-known producer – was my touchstone. He made me feel so safe and so supported, I was able to walk through my fear and get really comfortable. Then of course I leaned towards friends in moments that I was having panic attacks. I was afraid about what I was doing. I called my sister and my brother who are both singers. And I have a friend that s a manager in the industry, and I called him at one point. But mostly our director, Nisha [Ganatra], was wonderful, and the script was there, so I didn t really have to call on anyone. It was all built into the process. The High Note is available to rent or buy on demand May 29, 2020.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino s ninth film (if you count the Kill Bill movies as one), just earned him his highest opening-weekend box office, so it s safe to say mainstream audiences were primed and ready for another of the maverick director s stylized adventures. Currently sitting Certified Fresh at 84% on the Tomatometer, the rambling tour through the Los Angeles of 1969 ranks just below Django Unchained in Tarantino s filmography, marking only the latest critical hit in a career full of them. But what did average moviegoers think of the movie? Once Upon a Time currently holds an Audience Score of 72%, which ties 2007 s Death Proof as the lowest of any of his films. Is 72% a bad score? Not by any means, but considering Tarantino s reputation as a filmmaker, it indicates a certain level of dissatisfaction not commonly associated with his movies. With that in mind, we decided to take a peek at the user reviews to get a broader sense of how the moviegoing public at large responded to the film and suss out what might have brought that Audience Score down just a touch more than we expected. Check out the user reviews of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and let us know what you thought of the film, and these reviews, in the comments. (Note, some of the reviews have been slightly edited for length and grammar/spelling.)(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)How does this compare to Tarantino s previous work? Not Tarantino s best. Sean W C, 2.5 starsThis is for the hardcore Tarantino fan. Good, but not mind-blowing.. Sean B, 3 starsIt was just OK. The most un-Tarantino movie he s made. Stephen M, 3 starsTarantino never ceases to make a masterpiece time and time again. The cinematics were pleasing, classic, and very on brand  If you are a fan of good visuals, excellent acting, and a compelling storyline with Tarantino s classic touches as the cherry on top, then this is the movie to see.– Zada, 5 StarsWhat a wild ride. The first two hours are definitely a different take from Tarantino, very different from his usual stuff. But the last 40-or-so minutes are unmistakably Tarantino in full. Kyle, 5 starsI really enjoyed the movie. It was a bit different from Quentin’s other movies, but nonetheless the cast pulled it off. The movie kept me wondering, and then I really got to see what the tale was, and was immediately hooked and impressed. It’s safe to say Tarantino hasn’t lost his touch. I would like to watch it again. Jay A, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)How is the pacing and plot?Terrible movie no plot, no entertainment value, just three hours of pointless dialogue. Wow, I don’t know how people enjoy this crap. Literally nothing happened until the last 20 minutes! Nothing! Do not see this movie!!! Matthew K, 0.5 starsNot his best work. Meandering and pointless. Very disappointing. David S,  2 starsThere really is not any character development or a main driving plot in the film. I would closely relate it to Pulp Fiction, in that it’s more of a series of random but loosely collected clips. A lot of people left the theater asking, “What was the point of this ?” I think the film would be more enjoyable at home when there is time to burn; there’s just too much dead time that could’ve been removed and made this movie ~1.5 hours shorter.  Daves_Ratings,  2 starsA little long. Could have cut out about 1/3 of the movie. Stephen M, 3 starsThis movie, to me, is a triumph. Although devoid of a clear plot/narrative, Tarantino crafts the dialogue and characters in ways which make it fun to watch. And although the second act tends to drag at times, the overall story is a blast to watch, along with incredibly written characters acted perfectly (especially DiCaprio and Pitt). Also, the incredibly entertaining first two hours and 15 minutes lead into what may be my favorite scene in a movie this year. David A, 4.5 starsI love Tarantino s attention to detail, nuance and creativity. The camera tells a story in every scene. If you like fast food more than well-marinated, slow-cooked steak, then this might not appeal to you. CO Critic, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)What about the cast? The stars carried it. Steven B, 2.5 starsI enjoyed the movie, but it wasn t one of Tarantino s best. Great acting. Great camera work. Great sound track. But it didn t have the energy of Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill 1 and 2. Maybe I just expected too much. Gene, 3 starsMovie was enjoyable fun and Leo and Brad were electric together. Gina, 3.5 starsDamn fine filmmaking! I want a Rick Dalton movie, stat! Damien C, 4.5 starsA wonderful, meandering road with superb acting performances by both DiCaprio and Pitt that eventually leads us to one hell of an ending. If you re a Tarantino fan, or a fan of any of these actors, you should love this movie. Mike M, 5 starsDiCaprio Delivers yet Again. One of the best ensemble pieces in years. Brad Pitt was phenomenal and nuanced. Will see again. Siskel No Ebert, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)And the historical context?Do some research before watching. A big overarching plot point in the film (which I didn’t know going in) is centered on a famous cult murder from the 1960-70 period. Daves_Ratings, 2 starsA good story, but it lacks most of the thrill and suspense often found in his films. The difference with this one is that it explores Hollywood as a past and present establishment more than creating specific stories with protagonists who set out to achieve clearly defined goals. Mark, 3.5 starsLoved the 60s eye candy from small, well-curated objects like Aqua Net hairspray and the ode to 60s neon signs  All in all, a wonderful stroll down memory lane (my era) by a director who has a unique personal style. Amy, 3.5 starsRecreation of the era and the story, cast, and characters will make you want to see this one again. Thomas, 5 stars(Photo by @ Columbia Pictures)What about that ending? The last 15 minutes were good. Too drawn out. Barry M, 2 starsI found the movie boring. The end was way too violent and weird. Very weird. Some people walked out early, and some people applauded the ending. It’s just a matter of personal taste, I guess. Donna W, 2.5 starsThe ending was a little disappointing and actually had some humor in it. Gina, 3.5 starsI don t want to spoil anything, but I was not expecting the ending at all. Zada, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)Any final thoughts?I feel misled about this movie; it s Helter Skelter revisited. I do not think that I would have gone to see this movie if I would have known. Ray B, 3 starsThis movie is so much fun! Don t miss it. Tarantino, DiCaprio, and Pitt knock it out of the park. They will both get Oscar nods, well deserved. Can t wait to see it again and again. Warren W, 4.5 starsCheck out all of the user reviews for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Like this? (Photo by ©Marvel Studios)The numbers look good for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which pulled in a record-breaking million across the four-day weekend. They look even better for theaters and the industry. The only people  probably looking at the numbers with some grief are the folks at Paramount, which recently pushed both Jackass Forever and Top Gun: Maverick off this year’s schedule into 2022. That could still turn out to be a good idea and ultimately be looked back upon as just a slight delay for some bigger grosses, assuming the pandemic numbers head in the right direction again. But as the box office numbers have been showing for the past month now, people are still going to the movies – especially when there are no streaming options. But even more important for the industry is the extrapolation of these numbers, which are starting to feel more like pre-2020 instead of 2021. And not to bury the lede, but the box office just had its biggest Labor Day weekend ever. Not bad.King of the Crop: Shang-Chi Breaks Multiple Records, But Can It Be the first 2021 Movie to Hit 0 Million?Only four other times in history has the four-day Labor Day holiday grossed over 0 million, led by the likes of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Possession (two of those movies did not even debut in that weekend). The films in this Labor Day weekend s top 10 grossed over 1 million, besting the 4 million over the 2007 holiday which was led by Zombie s Halloween.Last week when we measured the success of Candyman, it was the Thursday-preview numbers that served as our guide. This week, we note that Shang-Chi had the second-best preview numbers during the pandemic, with .8 million. That is more than F9’s .1 million and less than Black Widow’s .2 million, which we should remember was made before the film hit Premier Access on Disney+ on Friday. Shang-Chi had no Premier Access on Friday, nor Saturday, Sunday, Monday, nor going forward. The seven past live-action PG-13 films which have grossed between .3 million and .3 million in Thursday previews include 2014’s Godzilla, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They averaged a three-day opening weekend of .5 million, with the second Fantastic Beasts film posting the weakest eventual three-day haul with .1 million. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings posted an estimate of .5 million over just the three days. That may be slightly below the average of those other films, which all had more recognizable name brands than Shang-Chi, but it is also the biggest Labor Day opening ever, the second-best opening of the pandemic, and the third-best September weekend ever behind both of the It films.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Those are also the only films to ever open in September and gross over 0 million. That is a number the box office has yet to crack since Bad Boys for Life did it before shutdown in 2020. Black Widow opened to million and could not do it – but it was also available for a price at home. F9 opened to million and came up shy of 5 million, despite being a theatrical exclusive. Only five films have ever grossed million or more in their first five days and failed to gross 0 million: Fifty Shades of Grey, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Simpsons Movie, and The Day After Tomorrow are four of them; the fifth is this summer’s Black Widow (i.e. pandemic + home availability = some will avoid the risk).Shang-Chi has very little competition over the next few weeks before Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases in its new just-announced date – Sony was clearly encouraged by this weekend s numbers – and No Time To Die comes out. Add Monday’s holiday to the total and Shang-Chi is estimated to have a gross around million over the four days, very much in line with the pre-pandemic average based on its Thursday numbers. What a difference a day makes! If we can begin to measure some metrics by films just being a day or so off their pre-2019 theatrical exclusive wavelengths, we may be making some progress. Especially if we can all just stay safe out there. The Top Ten And Beyond: Candyman Holds Strong As Free Guy Sets Sights on Passing Jungle Cruise(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Shang-Chi could not deliver the best Labor Day weekend ever all by itself. The continuing success of Free Guy can not be overlooked as it made another .9 million over the weekend and .4 million total over the holiday, bringing its total to .5 million in 25 days. That is over half a million more than what Jungle Cruise had in 26 days (.97 million). Cruise, which has been available on Disney+’s Premier Access, still has a strong presence in the top 5 in its sixth weekend of release and has driven its theatrical total to 6.7 million. Free Guy, without any streaming options until the end of the month, is now likely to surpass Jungle’s numbers and possibly get as high as 0 million. Free Guy’s three-day weekend also ranks 16th all-time amongst fourth weekends for August releases – higher than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Straight Outta Compton, Rush Hour 3, and Lee Daniels The Butler. It has made 9 million worldwide to date. Jungle Cruise is at 9 million.Candyman contributed even more money to the pot this weekend, making .4 million for a 53% drop from last weekend – better than The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’s 57% fall from a .1 million start and Old’s 59.3% fall from .8 million. With an increase to .3 million through the holiday, Candyman’s .7 million in 11 days is less than a million behind the pace of HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad, which made .6 million in 10 days. Remember that James Gunn’s day-and-date streaming film fell 71.5% down to .4 million in its second weekend. Candyman is now poised to surpass that film’s total and settle in with around million- million.Paw Patrol: The Movie, which Paramount sacrificed into theaters so Clifford the Big Red Dog could live on someday, grossed .1 million this weekend and an estimated .3 million over the holiday. No family film released in the second half of August has ever grossed million, let alone one streaming at the same time. Paw Patrol finds itself with .5 million after 17 days, which is better than The Angry Birds Movie 2 was doing in the same period in 2019 with a .94 million third weekend and .79 million. It went on to gross .66 million. Expect Paw Patrol to end up in that vicinity – lower than most family films gone hybrid this year, but potentially still higher than Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2, which was exclusive to theaters. On The Vine: James Wan s Original Horror Film, Malignant, a Venice Favorite, and MoreJames Wan’s Malignant may be the closest thing to challenge Shang-Chi’s number 1 slot (but that is still further away than Jim Carrey’s shot at Lauren Holly in Dumb and Dumber). The horror film will also be streaming on HBO Max starting Friday. In more exclusive news, STXFilms is putting the Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste crime comedy, Queenpins, into select Cinemark theaters, just their second during the pandemic after this February’s The Mauritanian. Then Focus will be releasing Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, which debuted to great critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival this past week. love爱博体育app下载 (Photo by HBO, Marvel Studios)2019 is a big no, a huge year for a couple of pop culture s most beloved franchises. Over the past decade and change, the juggernaut Marvel Cinematic Universe has unleashed 21 blockbuster movies held together by a few common threads, and on April 26, one of those threads will come to a glorious, three-hour-long, action- and drama-filled conclusion in Avengers: Endgame. On the small screen, HBO struck Lannister gold when its adaptation of George R.R. Martin s popular A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novel series, Game of Thrones, debuted in 2011 and became a global hit. On April 14, the much anticipated eighth and final season premieres it s been over a year and a half since season 7! and viewers are understandably eager to find out how the saga will end.Thankfully, those of us who have followed along with both journeys haven t been forced to choose between the two, barring any unforeseen circumstances, and most everyone who wants to see both Thanos and the Night King defeated should be able to do so. But what if you were forced to choose? What if you could only watch Avengers: Endgame or the final season of Game of Thrones? Which would you sacrifice, and which would you see? We had two RT staffers maker their case, and then you can vote below and make your case in the comments.I Choose Game of Thrones(Photo by HBO)The Marvel movies are great entertainment, and I have a blast every time I go to see one, but I just don t have the same kind of emotional investment in the Avengers that I do in the fates of Dany, Tyrion, Jon, and the Starks. Game of Thrones did such a spectacular job of taking each of them through their individual character arcs and then bringing them all back together again and, in the case of Daenerys, introducing her to the others that I just couldn t not find out what happens to them. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and the other big players in the MCU who are done or close to done playing their roles will absolutely be missed, and their characters have been fun to watch, but their stories aren t nearly as significantly intertwined as the characters stories in Game of Thrones are. Plus, we re talking about seven-plus hours of storytelling in Thrones final season; that s more than double the length of Endgame, which is admittedly a long movie that will likely feature some definitive moments for the franchise but that franchise will ultimately continue on. After season 8, Game of Thrones as we know it will be done, and no, the prequels do not count. At the end of the day, as sprawling as Game of Thrones has been at times, it s still a more complete, more focused story than the MCU as a whole has been, so I d be way more sad about missing the final season than I would be about missing Endgame.I Choose Avengers: Endgame(Photo by Marvel Studios)We ve never seen big-screen storytelling like we ve gotten with Marvel s literally game-changing Cinematic Universe. As a fan of the comics, it s been thrilling to see some of their marquee characters brought to life with such style and craft by some of Hollywood s brightest stars and best talents behind the camera. As a child, I never would have dreamed that a bunch of superheroes would rule the movies, but here we are, and the ride has been amazing. Robert Downey Jr., of course, turned out to be the perfect Tony Stark, and whatever else he does after this, he ll forever be remembered for that role, so it s unthinkable to me that I might miss his inevitable departure from the franchise. The same goes for Chris Evans Steve Rogers. Plus, I practically grew up with these characters, watching them on their individual journeys and cheering when they were allowed to share screen time. Marvel was also really smart about the way they seeded the Thanos storyline, beginning with his appearance in the first Avengers movie s mid-credits stinger remember that? and leading all the way up to Avengers: Infinity War. This is the battle I ve been waiting years to see, and I m not about to miss it, not only because it promises to be an epic one for the ages, but also because it will probably serve as the swan song for some of Hollywood s most beloved big-screen characters. Don t get me wrong; I love Game of Thrones too, but I ve invested over a decade of my life in these movies and these characters, and I am looking forward to Endgame like no other movie I can recall in recent memory.
