久久发彩票采用百度引擎4(Baidu 9)This year, Jimmy Fallon marks five years as host of The Tonight Show, arguably the most coveted regular hosting gig on the planet. He and his team have been celebrating the milestone with some of the series most ambitious episodes ever, episodes that mean a ton to the comedian personally. In February, on the show s fifth anniversary, Fallon paid tribute to one of his own comedy inspirations, Garry Shandling, by surprising viewers with a faux behind-the-scenes documentary episode, a la The Larry Sanders Show. (A BTS moment in which he s yelling at teenage animal expert Bob Irwin, son of Steve, is gold.) In January, he kicked off the year by taking a crew to Puerto Rico and shooting an episode on the island, which is still working through the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Fallon says he was inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda s staging of Hamilton in San Juan, and at a recent Q A at the Writers Guild of America, described his Puerto Rico episode  one of my proudest moments of anything we ve ever done on any show I ve ever been a part of. Those who first saw Fallon when he was part of the Saturday Night Live cast during some of the show s best years – he crossed over with Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Tracy Morgan – would likely be unsurprised to now see the comedian thriving in late night. He stood out back then because he was quick, armed with a flotilla of impressions, and, as a bonus, could sing. Today, he puts those skills to work nightly on The Tonight Show. Fallon says he developed those skills watching and learning from comedy s greats. As he gears up to close out his fifth year, and come back for a sixth, seventh, and eighth – he is contracted until at least 2021 – Fallon sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to pay tribute to some of those legendswith this list of his five favorite comedy movies ever. (Note, he was quick to caveat that he has so many more than five.)

This week in TV news: a new Stephen King adaptation, a Marvel crossover, and casting updates for Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi project The Nevers, DC Universe s Titans, season 3 of The Sinner, and more.Stephen King s The Stand Gets a New Miniseries — and a New EndingCBS All Access has planned a limited event series based on Stephen King s The Stand, for which the author will write a final chapter not found in the book. The cast includes Westworld s James Marsden as working-class factory man Stu Redman, Aquaman s Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as the young, pregnant Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as the deaf and mute newfound leader Nick Andros. The series takes place a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague where the forces of good and evil, and the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man, per the official description. The Stand’s previous adaptations include a 1994 miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe and a 2008 Marvel comic series. The Man Who Fell to Earth Series in the Works From Star Trek: Discovery Producers(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The Man Who Fell to Earth is turning into a TV series. Based on the novel of the same name and the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series will follow  an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future, per the official announcement.“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet said in a statement. Kurtzman and Lumet are both producers on CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery.Marvel s Runaways Meet Cloak DaggerMarvel s teen superhero shows are staging a crossover: In the upcoming third season of the Hulu drama Runaways, the main characters from the Freeform drama Cloak Dagger will meet up with the titular teen superhero team. Details about the story line have not yet been revealed.“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at,” said Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb in a statement announcing the news.Season 3 of Runaways premieres all 10 episodes December 13 on Hulu.Evil Is More Than an Exorcism of the Week The CBS drama Evil, which follows a psychologist, a priest-in-training, and a carpenter who investigate the backlog of unexplained mysteries in the Catholic church, is — as seen in the trailer above — much scarier than any series the network has aired before. But just because it s a procedural doesn t mean the series will feel the same from week to week. We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week, co-creator Robert King told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen — a school where all the girls at the school start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. I would say the other thing is you’re looking at life and you’re seeing evil, not with a capital E but with a small e — the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in? So that is really what our people are [doing]: Just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural? But also looking at hope. meanwhile in the upside down pic.twitter.com/BtPlMjy0pS Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) October 1, 2020Filming had only been underway for about a month when the COVID-19 pandemic cut production short, but it resumed again at the very end of September. Needless to say, the show was certainly not going to be ready to air until the latter half of 2021 at the earliest. Up to this point, each season came out around the time of year when it took place — i.e. Season 2 took place around Halloween and was released in October, Season 3 took place over summer break and came out around the 4th of July — and the fact that the upcoming season takes place during the school year (and, judging from social media clues, in the fall) led us to believe Season 4 could have potentially premiered in the fall of 2021. Then, of course, we got the teaser released on August 6, 2021, which didn t show us much of anything new, but declared that Season 4 would drop sometime in 2022. Is it possible that Netflix will hold it until the fall of 2022 to keep with tradition? Maybe, but that means we ve got a long wait ahead of us.Will There Be More? There had been plenty of speculation that the fourth season of Stranger Things would be the last — especially since the young actors definitely don t look like middle schoolers anymore. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer said that the story isn t wrapping up just yet. Season 4 won t be the end, he said. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic-induced shut-down] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story. What s Up With This Eleven Teaser? While there s still no premiere date, the powers that be at Netflix know that multiple years is way too long to go without any new Stranger Things content whatsoever — which is why they released a new (mysterious, of course) teaser in May hinting at some previously unrevealed information about Season 4.The minute-long clip is focused on Eleven, featuring what appears to be a flashback of the facility where our favorite superpowered teen was raised. As the clock strikes 3 (you ll recall we know episode 2 is titled  Tick Tok Mr. Clock ), children play games (including what looks like Demogorgon chess — Queen s Gambit crossover confirmed! kidding) in a medical/science-type facility. A magic 8 ball reads signs point to yes and a Plinko game with discs that landed on numbers 4, 7 and 8. A man says, Good morning, children as the camera pans to a door with 11 on it — and our Eleven (played by Brown), startled, opens her eyes. What does it mean?! And are we getting more?! That s up to us to analyze and wait until Netflix decides to give us some more info.Stranger Things 4 will premiere on Netflix in 2022.On an Apple device? Black Widow is finally here and on Thursday night it had a better preview night than Deadpool, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Guardians of the Galaxy – not to mention Justice League, Man of Steel and Wonder Woman. They could not wait any longer. Not even a few more hours until it dropped on Disney+ for a premium fee. Did that shutter its theatrical numbers over the weekend? Maybe, but with million for the weekend it is still the best start of any film since 2019.King of the Crop: Black Widow Off To A Strong Start, But Will It Go the Distance? When F9 began with .1 million in Thursday previews, theaters were back! So we were told. Its weekend number, though, while still a pandemic high was also on the low-end of comparable films to that preview tally. Black Widow just cracked the Top 40 all-time in day-before previews with a .2 million start on Thursday. Only two films had ever started with million and failed to hit million by the end of the weekend: Aquaman and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo was then joined by Man of Steel and Justice League as the only films on that list not to reach 0 million by the end of their run. Neither of those DC films had pandemic asterisks to impede their progress (only Tomatometer scores of 56% and 40%, respectively). Black Widow, Certified Fresh at 80%, is now the third film on that list not to hit million on its opening weekend and will most likely also join the non-0 million company as well. But, on the plus side, the movie has made over 5 million worldwide and, reportedly, an additional million in Disney+ Premier Access rentals. At least we have a new threshold now that the studio feels comfortable giving out numbers for their ongoing experiment. So, 0 million is the new 0 million and, as Black Widow is set to reach its first 0 million later this week, that milestone is looking possible. Traditionally, movies opening with million or more sail past 0 million totals; this is your regular reminder that only X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Fifty Shades of Grey started with -plus million and failed to reach 0 million. Still, one cannot help but feel as if the standards by which box office has been measured in the past are gone permanently. Releases like Black Widow allow theaters to breathe a sigh of relief with enough patrons coming to get some popcorn, but the streaming and premium access factors may be making these films more frontloaded than ever before. Prior to this weekend, the top five opening weekends of the year fell an average of 62.7% in their second weekends. (Three of those films were HBO Max/Warner Brothers titles.) In 2019, the top 10 films averaged a 52% drop and those openings were million or higher (or, higher than any film since – including Black Widow). Marvel’s film is going to have a shot to overtake both A Quiet Place Part II and F9 by next weekend and both of them have been exclusive to theaters. (The Quiet Place sequel will be available for purchase online starting Monday.) Of the 23 films that have ever opened between million and million, 13 of them did not have 0 million by day 10.The Top 10 and Beyond: F9 Races Past Global Record of Half a Billion Dollars(Photo by Giles Keyte/©Universal Pictures)F9 s drop of 53% from last week to .9 million marks the second-biggest third-weekend drop of any film still in 2,000 theaters this year. (Mortal Kombat fell 61.4%.) This puts F9 in close proximity to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (another franchise that was in decline), which grossed .7 million in its third weekend, had 5.8 million after 17 days, and ultimately grossed 2.5 million. Unless F9 pulls off the mere 16.3% drop that Tell No Tales did in weekend four, it will probably be right in line with the 0 million that film had on day 24. That is where A Quiet Place Part II stands as of this weekend on day 45 of its release. (F9 stands at 1 million.) Even with F9 beginning to creep up behind it, Krasinski’s film actually had a better third weekend ( million) – but at this pace Black Widow is going to surpass it before F9 does. The ninth entry in The Fast Saga can at least boast this week that it became first film during the pandemic to surpass 0 million at the international box office. A Quiet Place Part II currently stands at 5 million; the first film grossed 0 million worldwide. The newbies last week were knocked back a little. The Boss Baby: Family Business – still available to stream on Peacock as well as watch in theaters – fell 46% to .7 million for a total of .7 million to date. That’s right on par with what Stuart Little 2 had back in 2002, though it grossed .6 million in its second weekend. The CGI mouse film started to fall back further in subsequent weeks, which may give Boss Baby 2 a chance to align itself and make it up to around the .95 million that the Stuart Little movie grossed – far less than the original Boss Baby s 5 million. The Forever Purge similarly fell 46% down to .8 million for a total of .5 million. That is pretty close to the pace of 2009 horror movie Orphan, which had .5 million in weekend two and a tally of million. Orphan finished with .5 million. What Should Have Been: A Weekend With IndyIt was supposed to be Indiana Jones weekend, but the filming of the fifth film was put on hold until after the pandemic. James Mangold’s entry with Harrison Ford will now debut July 29, 2022.On the Vine: The Tune Squad Reassembles for a Thwack of NostalgiaThe next film to test the hybrid model of same-day theatrical/streaming release will be Warner Brothers  Space Jam: A New Legacy, as LeBron James tries to outdo what Michael Jordan did 25 years ago. That would be just over million at the box office with Bugs Bunny as his above-the-title co-star. The film will be in theaters as well as available to stream on HBO Max. Also debuting in theaters is Focus Features  Roadrunner, a documentary about the late celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain.Full List of Box Office Results: July 9-11, 2021

7.79.6 9月喜迎Disney’s live-action remakes have made collective billions at the box office. Although it’s early, the latest entry, Tim Burton’s dark take on Dumbo, could be the first failure among the recent films. Meanwhile, Harmony Korine s latest film fails to make a Spring Breakers-level splash, and Us and Captain Marvel continue to impress.King of the Crop: Dumbo Leads But Is Still Very Far Behind(Photo by Disney)While Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book and Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast made a collective billion-plus worldwide, it was Burton’s Alice In Wonderland that really began the live-action remake trend back in 2010. That film remains Burton’s biggest success, a billion-dollar spring hit that was also the second-biggest opening in Disney’s history at the time. (It is now the 17th.) Though Dumbo was not expected to challenge that 6.1 million start, it was also expected to do a lot better than million this weekend. With a 0 million production budget, Dumbo is clearly counting on the international dollar to save it. Even with optimistic projections domestically, no live-action film opening between -49 million stateside has ever reached 0 million. (Disney’s Wild Hogs came closest with 8 million.)Don’t blame critics on this one, as Dumbo’s 50% score on the Tomatometer is not much lower than Alice in Wonderland’s 51%. But that film was also able to market a very bankable (at the time) Johnny Depp, putting him front and center on every poster. Meanwhile, the trailers for Dumbo almost went out of their way to reveal more of the circus than the film’s high-flying star. We’ll update its progress next week.Rotten Returns: The Beach Bum(Photo by NEON / VICE)Neon had a great little story this year with the documentary Apollo 11. With .65 million in the bank, it is the company’s third-highest-grossing title after I, Tonya ( million) and the documentary Three Identical Strangers (.3 million). Harmony Korine s The Beach Bum (51% on the Tomatometer) is likely to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in its catalog, but the 1,005-theater launch only produced .8 million this weekend. That’s the fourth-worst per-theater average for Neon ahead of just Borg vs. McEnroe, Revenge, and the million Sundance pickup Assassination Nation, which had the studio’s widest launch (1,403 theaters) and opened to just .05 million for a per-theater average of 3. In March 2013, A24 released Korine’s last film, Spring Breakers, into 1,104 theaters in its second weekend, where it grossed .85 million on its way to .1 million total. The Top Ten And Beyond: Captain Marvel and Us Continue to Impress(Photo by @ Universal)Last October, Blumhouse released David Gordon Green’s Halloween, which grossed 6 million in its first ten days. Last week, the company released Jordan Peele’s Us, which has now grossed 8 million in its first ten days. Halloween finished its run with just 9.3 million even as it grossed .4 million in its second weekend. However, Us second weekend made .6 million — a smaller drop (52.7 percent) than Michael Myers’ (58.8 percent). Of the 21 films to have grossed between 3-133 million in their first ten days, only six have failed to reach 0 million. Halloween was one of them. Us is forging a path to another incredible milestone, and it has already grossed 4 million worldwide.Captain Marvel maintained its impressive pace with another million this weekend, the 27th-best fourth weekend ever for a wide release. With more than 3 million, it is the 21st best-performing film of all time after 24 days and well on its way to 0 million. Every film to have grossed 0 million in 24 days has reached 0 million, and Captain Marvel’s fourth weekend was higher than six of them (The Dark Knight Rises, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) In other milestone news, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World passed 0 million worldwide this weekend.PureFlix’s abortion film Unplanned made the top five with .1 million, the second-largest opening in the Christian-based company’s history after God’s Not Dead 2. Five Feet Apart continues to enjoy a rather healthy stay in the top five, dropping just another 26.9 percent to .2 million for a running total of nearly million — not bad for a million production. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral passed million and may just have enough in the tank to surpass Boo! A Madea Halloween to become the second-highest-grossing film of his directorial career. Finally, Bleecker Street expanded its harrowing true-life terrorist drama Hotel Mumbai to 924 theaters, and it grossed .1 millon. Where does that rank among the company’s wide launches in more than 650 theaters?A solid fifth, following Logan Lucky (.6 million, 3,031 theaters), Eye in the Sky (.9 million, 1,029 theaters), Megan Leavey (.8 million, 1,956 theaters) and Unsane (.7 million, 2,023 theaters). Hotel Mumbai (.1 million, 924 theaters) finishes ahead of The Lost City of Z (.8 million, 866 theaters), Beirut (.7 million, 755 theaters), Danny Collins (.4 million, 739 theaters), Pawn Sacrifice ( million, 781 theaters), and Trumbo (1,068, 660 theaters). This Time Last Year: Audiences Were Ready For Player One(Photo by Warner Bros)Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One had the second-highest opening of 2018 to date with .7 million. Tyler Perry’s Acrimony placed second with .1 million. Black Panther passed 0 million, and Isle of Dogs for the second straight week had the top per-theater-average (,839), grossing .9 million in just 165 theaters. The top ten films grossed 5.25 million and averaged 55.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated 8.30 million and averaged 58.7% with critics. On the Vine: Shazam! To Lead, But Pet Semetary Could Surprise(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The latest offering from the DC side of the aisle opens with some glorious reviews so far. Shazam has 93% to date on the Tomatometer just three weeks before Avengers: Endgame opens. That’s certainly enough to take the top spot at the box office — and audiences can take it from there. Also blessed with strong early reviews is the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. It boasts a 91% thanks to reviews from closing night of SXSW, and with a solid opening weekend could end up becoming the third-highest-grossing King adaptation to date. Finally, STX releases the educational drama The Best of Enemies with Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell, but in fewer than 2,000 screens. The Full Top 10: March 29-31Dumbo (2019) 46% – million ( million total)Us (2019) 93% – .60 million (8.22 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .50 million (3.80 million total)Five Feet Apart (2019) 53% – .25 million (.87 million total)Unplanned (2019) 42% – .11 million (.11 million total)Wonder Park (2019) 34% – .94 million (.88 million total)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90% – .23 million (2.96 million total)Hotel Mumbai (2018) 76% – .16 million (.27 million total)Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral (2019) 11% – .70 million (.03 million total)The Beach Bum (2019) 57% – .80 million (.80 million total)
(Photo by Open Roadt/courtesy Everett Collection)All Liam Neeson Movies Ranked by TomatometerAfter a major film debut with 1981 s Excalibur, Liam Neeson spent the rest of that swingin decade slowly climbing the acting ladder. (See him randomly in Krull, The Mission, The Dead Pool, and more, for example.) But after holding his own opposite Patrick Swayze in 1989 s Next of Kin, Neeson was at last upgraded to star for Sam Raimi s dark superhero movie Darkman where he spends most of the movie disfigured and fully covered in bandages. Still, Darkman was a financial success, especially for an original superhero IP in this era, and Neeson carried on with lending his baritone gravitas in dramas like the Certified Fresh Husbands and Wives. In 1994, Neeson nabbed his only Oscar acting nomination with the monumental Schindler s List, which would go on to win Best Picture for producer Steven Spielberg, who of course also got Best Director. Neeson took on another significant title historical role a few years later with Michael Collins, before entering the pop cultural fray as the decidedly unhistorical (though we suppose it depends on who you ask) Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. And after that, just into the 21st century, Neeson appeared in Gangs of New York, Kingdom of Heaven, and Batman Begins. A resume that includes working with Raimi, Spielberg, Allen, Lucas, Scorsese, Scott, and Nolan? Sounds like that d be a career peak for most And yet 2008 s Taken was still to come, which would transform Neeson into the go-to mid-budget action guy, create a cottage industry of similar flicks to follow in its wake. Some were pretty good (Cold Pursuit, A Walk Among The Tombstones), others came out decent (The Commuter, Non-Stop), a few were god-awful (Taken 2, Taken 3), and some were one was amazing (The Grey). We also recently saw Neeson s softer side resurface with Ordinary Love, his first romantic film since 2003 s Love Actually and one of the best-reviewed films of his career, proving he remains as versatile as ever. To celebrate his birthday, we take a look back on all Liam Neeson movies ranked by Tomatometer!

(Photo by © STX Films)Moviemaking is incredibly… complicated. A million things can – and often do – go wrong, myriad questions and unforeseen problems pop up, and all the while issues like budgeting and scheduling consistently hover around, like annoying flies you just can’t swat away. But making a movie during lockdown? “It was intimidating and surreal, to be honest,” Adam Mason says of the prospect (at the time uncharted territory) of doing just that.Back in early July, the co-writer-director’s romance-thriller, Songbird (out December 11 on demand), became the first studio feature film to shoot in Los Angeles since the industry was put on ice for the foreseeable future in March. “The entire city shut down in one day, and nobody was working,” Mason recalls, “and it was like, How can we get back to work? More than anything to do with the story, that was a huge priority.”When the lockdown went into effect, Mason had to essentially shelve his indie passion project, which was in pre-production, leaving him “very despondent,” as he puts it. The next morning, his writing partner Simon Boyes rang him, and the duo cooked up a found-footage, lockdown-set “monster movie akin to something like Cloverfield.” That idea was greenlit by producer Adam Goodman, and eventually Michael Bay signed on, and Songbird ballooned from an iPhone-shot indie to a slick, big-budget Hollywood production about lovers (KJ Apa and Sofia Carson) trapped in a near-future COVID-plagued L.A., with a cast that boasts Bradley Whitford, Demi Moore, Peter Stormare, and Craig Robinson. “It became something a lot bigger than I anticipated,” Mason concedes. Zone Systems, PPE, And Just 19 Days For a Michael Bay Blockbuster (Photo by © STX Films)That bigness presented a big problem. “It’s the only project I’ve ever been involved in where I was thinking about something other than the narrative,” says Mason. “I was thinking about safety and how we could pull off this kind of monumental task.” To do that, the production, in conjunction with unions, laid down a set of guidelines: There would be constant testing. “I was tested three times a week,” says Mason, “and if anyone came into my bubble – the amount of people I’d see day to day was tiny – I would know that that person had been tested negative that morning.”There would be a “zone system,” in which anyone on set was designated to a particular area, to limit interactions with non-masked actors when cameras rolled. The crew would be capped at 40 people. And personal protective equipment (PPE) and quarantining measures would be in place. “We had a rule very early on that we wouldn’t hire an actor that was out of town,” says Mason. “And then everyone quarantined whenever they left set, so I would know that everyone I was working with hadn’t mingled with anyone outside of their families.” (As Deadline reported in July, the SAG-AFTRA union hit Songbird with a Do Not Work order, only to rescind it the following day once an agreement was made.)It helped that Songbird was a film about lockdown conceived during lockdown, written with a lot of those logistical hula hoops in mind – namely, not being able to have blocking (“It wasn’t like actors had to hit marks because we didn’t have the full crew to warrant that kind of traditional filmmaking,” Mason says) or “massive movie lights” or makeup retouches or time (it wrapped in 19 days) or anything else that would require inessential on-set interaction. And if there was a moment that called for a lot of actors, there was a workaround: “Because Songbird is set four years in the future during the pandemic,” Mason says of the more extra-heavy scenes, “all of the military were wearing hazmat suits and gas masks and things that actually were extremely safe in terms of being PPE.”Certified Fresh Horror Via iPhones and Direct Messages(Photo by © Shudder)That same ethos – doing what you can with the limited lockdown means you have – has propelled indie films shot during the pandemic as well. Host, a grippingly fun horror film Certified Fresh at 100% (and currently streaming on Shudder) started as a lark. “[Host director] Rob Savage played a prank on us,” explains the film’s star, Haley Bishop. “He told us that there was this noise in his attic when we were all on Zoom, and then he somehow seamlessly made it seem like he had gone up into his attic and then cut to the zombie shot from the horror film [•REC]. He put the video up of us screaming online, and it got millions of views within a couple of days.”Viral exposure led to a deal with Shudder, and Host, about a séance over Zoom gone wrong, began shooting a mere two weeks later, in April. “When we started, the U.K. was in full lockdown,” Bishop says. “Rob never set foot in any of our apartments.” Host had a scriptment – “the little points we had to hit” – but the dialogue was completely improvised, so Savage and producer Douglas Cox, on blacked-out screens over Zoom, would instant-message actors notes in real time.“Rob would write, ‘Okay, call Jemma [Moore] a bitch’ or ‘Keep poking at her until she cracks,’ and he’d be sending other private messages to her,” Bishop says, noting that all footage from the film was shot from iPhones attached to the actors’ laptops. “That was the beauty of it: We didn’t have to reset lights or wait for any departments to fix anything. We could just start again immediately. The most challenging aspect, though, was because we had to do so much intense crying and screaming and because we weren’t being ushered back to a trailer between takes, I was like, I can’t cry anymore. I’m so dehydrated. ”When COVID restrictions in London loosened, a small stunt team donning PPE visited the necessary actors’ homes – with medics on standby outside – to rig them with the pulleys and ropes and crash mats and whatnot needed to achieve Host’s scares. “Luckily, my partner was physically strong enough to drag me down a hallway, so he was very involved with helping,” Bishop says of one particularly jump-worthy moment.A Playwright Pivots, Turning to Zoom to Bring Nora Highland to the Screen(Photo by Ryan Spahn )Even fewer frills – no chilling VFX or stunts or medics – are present in Nora Highland, writer-director Ryan Spahn’s comedic, Zoom-shot drama that screened in October (virtually, of course) as part of this year’s NewFest, an LGBTQIA+ focused film festival in New York. Spahn originally wrote Nora Highland as a play, but after hosting a reading of it for an online benefit in the early days of the pandemic – the reading featured Tessa Thompson in the role Marin Ireland plays in the film – he decided to adapt it into a shutdown-set feature. “I realized, Oh this really works on this platform, ” he says. “So then I adjusted it to the format of it being a found-footage or video conferencing film, like Searching or Unfriended.”The centerpiece of Nora Highland is a lengthy Zoom chat, in which a theater director (Ireland) and actor (Michael Hsu Rosen) spat over the casting of gay characters – the thorny ethical issue of casting straight actors in the roles – while discussing an upcoming Broadway revival. “They’re big New York stage actors, so we rehearsed it for two weeks and then they got off book, as if we were doing a play,” Spahn says of the process. “One was in Upstate, and the other was in Chelsea. But because it was designed for [Zoom], the way you’d rehearse it is exactly the way it was filmed. So we did it in one take, and I hoped there wasn’t an internet or cell-phone problem.”Despite some initial editing quibbles – “we couldn’t sit next to each other, so the editor had to screen-share his desktop, and there were weird delays and volume issues,” he explains – Spahn found filmmaking during the pandemic “very freeing.”Although Songbird has polar-opposite stakes and circumstances, Mason shares that sentiment: “Because there weren’t loads of people around, weighing in with opinions and thoughts and so on, there was this incredible sense of freedom that I haven’t felt for years. I think it kind of stripped away all of the bulls t of filmmaking.”Songbird is available on video on demand from December 11. Host is available now on Shudder. Nora Highland is currently screening at online festivals. On an Apple device? While sports fans can debate the results of last night s Big Game, fans of Marvel Studios (and sports fans who like Marvel movies) took note of an ad for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which aired shortly after kickoff. The tone was serious as it offered some new glimpses of an Earth after half its population disappeared into dust. But it also suggested a call to action for those with enhanced abilities to upend the new status quo. And as it featured substantial new footage from the movie, let s take a look at some of the things we learned from the 30-second television ad.The Survivor Support Group Supports A Time Jump(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the opening moments, we see a changed New York and an empty stadium to reinforce the monumental loss of life in Avengers: Infinity War. In voice over, we re told some have moved on. The scene cuts to a support group for survivors of the catastrophe Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) among them. All of which supports earlier reports that Endgame would take place some time after the Snap at the end of Infinity War. The length of that time jump is still up for debate with the earliest reports suggesting a real-time gap of roughly a year while others suggest Endgame will pick up several years after Infinity War. Either way, we re definitely getting a Leftovers vibe from the support group.Rocket Is An Avenger(Photo by Marvel Studios)We ll get to Rocket s big moment in the ad later. First, let s take a look at moment late in the spot when Steve s voiceover tells us the Avengers have not moved on. The dialogue is presented alongside a slow motion walk of the remaining Avengers. Rocket is among the group as they Well, let s assume they re on their way to deal with Thanos (Josh Brolin). The earlier Endgame teaser echoed a moment from Marvel Comics  The Infinity Gauntlet storyline in which the Avengers track Thanos down and find his armor propped up as a scarecrow. Its pretty clear elements of The Infinity Gauntlet will inform Endgame the way Thanos s Snap anchored Infinity War.Alternatively, the slow-motion walk may appear early in the film as the silhouettes of both War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) who are featured in a moment of their own appear to be missing. As some astute viewers pointed out, there is also the possibility that an unidentified character was mysteriously edited out of some of the footage in the trailer, including the slow-motion walk.Thor Is Spaceworthy(Photo by Marvel Studios)Our key glimpse of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the ad sees him looking out at a lush, green environment. It resembles the place Thanos viewed in Infinity War s closing moments, further suggesting the Avengers will take the battle back to the Mad Titan. There is also the possibility that Thor is looking out across Wakanda, judging from the landscape, but it s difficult to tell. Considering Thor s new weapon Stormbringer can conjure up the Bifrost or a Bifrost like means of interstellar travel we re going to assume he s been using it to search for Thanos and survivors of Infinity War s space team. But what ship is he on in the ad?The Benatar Survives?(Photo by Marvel Studios)In one of the more curious glimpses in the 30-second spot, Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) appear to be repairing the Benatar the now-abandoned Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship. This could be a moment from their initial departure from Titan or a flashback to happier times, as the first Endgame trailer revealed a lonely, distraught Tony recording a final message to Pepper Potts. But it could also be a moment from later in the film when the Avengers are reunited and use the Benatar to carry the whole team to Thanos. Well, presuming that s the ship on which we see Thor a few moments later in the ad.Consider the moment when Earthbound Avengers Steve Rogers, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Rhodey, and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) walk out of their headquarters and look up at something just out of frame. It could be Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), of course, but perhaps she brought the Benatar (and Thor) with her.Rocket Is First Through The Door(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rocket s key moment in the ad sees him bursting through the door of a seemingly simple shack near an unidentified coastline. This could easily be the shack Thanos built for himself on his retirement world, but it could also be something on Earth. The prominence of the seaside and fishing nets in the background to say nothing of the very Earth-like latch on the door suggest more familiar terrain, but perhaps Thanos always wanted a quiet life by the sea. Then again, maybe Rocket turned to fishing during his time on Earth and it s his seaside shack.Yeah, that doesn t seem likely, considering the guns strapped to his sides.Clint Barton Is Hawkeye Again?Ryan FujitaniThe earlier Endgame trailer prominently featured a sword-weilding Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in an apparent switch of persona to Ronin an identity his comic book counterpart adopted for a time. But in his Big Game Ad appearance, Clint appears to have a pair of quivers strapped to his back. It is fairly safe to assume Black Widow finds him working as Ronin and convinces him to come back to the Avengers, restoring his costumed persona and key gimmick in the process. After all, what would an Avengers movie (besides Infinity War) be without Hawkeye?Steve Rogers Has His Shield Back(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the lead-up to Infinity War, reports suggested Steve would take on the identity of Nomad, another Steve Rogers alias from the comics. This turned out to be more of a thematic idea than a literal one, as Steve was in fact roaming, but his costume turned out to be a very weathered version of the one he wore in Captain America: Civil War. That said, Steve lacked a proper shield throughout Infinity War, continuing an idea from Civil War about Steve s loss of identity. But as seen in the trailer, Steve has his shield back. Since Endgame is the presumed last stand of Captain America, it makes sense that he would be visually restored to his former self. It happens in the comics all the time, so a moment like that should occur in a movie like Endgame.Avengers: Endgame opens everywhere on April 26.

Almost 30 years after the release of the second Bill Ted movie, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return as the goofily endearing titular duo in Bill Ted Face the Music. And now they’ve also got grown-up daughters — played by Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving — to aid in their excellent adventures and save the universe from a most bogus fate.Does the long-awaited third installment live up to expectations? The first reviews of the movie indicate that most fans will be pleased to see that the new movie does the franchise, and particularly its main characters, justice with the right amount of laughs and heart. Here’s what critics are saying about Bill Ted Face the Music:Is it worth the wait for Bill Ted fans?Bill Ted Face the Music not only found a way to defy the odds to exist, but it also ended up working as an entry totally in line with the spirit of those older time travel tales.  Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentBill Ted Face the Music… not only gets it right, but makes it look easy. It pushes the franchise into new territory while recapturing the goofy magic of the first two films.  Angie Han, MashableThis is not the kind of late sequel that s a cash grab. It s clearly a labor of love.  Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comBill Ted Face the Music plays out like a madcap mash-up of Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey while avoiding all the pitfalls of simple fan service.  Sean Mulvihill, FanboyNationA perfect mix of both Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey…Bill Ted Face the Music is the perfect conclusion.  Rachel Leishman, The Mary SueIn execution, it’s sloppy, never finding a toehold on a decent comedic rhythm or creative lyricism to make a cohesive, wholly satisfying sequel.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionHow does it compare to the previous two films?Bill Ted Face the Music surprisingly arises as the most enjoyable entry in the series. Chuck Bowen, Slant MagazineBill Ted Face the Music is almost exactly as good as its two big-screen predecessors. John DeFore, Hollywood ReporterLike its predecessors [it] is winningly modest and harmlessly silly. A.O. Scott, New York TimesI happened to rewatch Bill Ted’s Excellent Adventure just a few days before Bill Ted Face the Music and they feel a lot like the same movie. Mike Ryan, UproxxBill Ted Face the Music is by far the worst of the three movies. Carla Hay, Culture Mix(Photo by ©Orion Pictures)Do you need to have seen the first two, though?Absolutely, but less to understand the plot than to familiarize yourself with the Bill Ted vib. Ty Burr, Boston GlobeThe film’s opening recaps the first two films…[so] you don’t necessarily need to watch the previous films. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesAre Reeves and Winter still excellent?[They] don’t miss a step when it comes to falling back into the surfer rhythms and signature head nods. [And] when they reunite onscreen with Sadler, it’s electric. Kristy Puchko, PajibaTheir dynamic hasn’t missed a step… It’s wonderful to see Reeves and Winter reunited and in particular, it’s lovely to see Reeves back in a comedy. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThe two actors haven t missed a beat…it’s wonderful to see [Reeves] return to humor… and it s especially enjoyable to see Mr. Winter back in a leading role. Jimmy O, JoBloReeves in particular never makes a comic misstep; he’s funny less for the lines he speaks than for his thoroughgoing physical incarnation of a character who’s at least 50 percent Golden Retriever. Dana Stevens, Slate(Photo by Patti Perret/©Orion Pictures)How are Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving?Weaving and Lundy-Paine perfectly capture mannerisms of Bill and Ted but in their own way. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe two have an appealing energy between them, nicely mirroring the harmless goofiness that made the original films more successful than they probably deserved to be. John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter[They] did a fantastic job of mimicking the behaviors of their dads, resulting in a believable and heartfelt performance… they were one of my favorite parts about the movie. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsThea and Billie are essentially personality-free, and, for the most part, exist to service their fathers’ arc. They have no memorable lines and nothing to distinguish one from the other. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionBillie and Thea aren’t particularly developed as characters… with such a perfect quartet of casting of Bills and Teds, something more could have been wrung from this concept. Kristy Puchko, PajibaDoes the script make enough sense? The goal is once again to save the world with a song, for reasons about as important and easy to explain as Star Trek technobabble. Luke Y. Thompson, Superhero HypeBill and Ted may not fully understand it. The screenwriters, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, might not either. But it doesn’t really matter. A.O. Scott, New York TimesBill Ted Face The Music doesn’t find its rhythm until [its] two storylines converge an hour in, which means that this 88-minute movie is basically over before it really begins. Katie Rife, AV ClubThe movie is overstuffed with too many bad ideas that are sloppily executed. And the end result is an uninspired mess. Carla Hay, Culture MixConsidering the writers had decades to tinker with the screenplay, the story is surprisingly labored. Mara Reinstein, Us Weekly(Photo by ©Orion Pictures)Is it heartwarming? The secret ingredient, as in all these films, is the open-heartedness with which it embraces the journey. Angie Han, MashableThere’s not a mean bone in all of this series, and the sense of sweetness that continues to carry through means more to these films than people may realize. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentFor a movie in which the world could end at any moment, Bill Ted Face the Music is awfully sweet and cheery. Steve Pond, The WrapBill Ted Face The Music has more heart than the previous two movies… this sequel [reaches] a tender spot that wouldn’t have been expected at the end of Bogus Journey. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendBut is it funny?Face the Music does know how to be funny. Perhaps not a film full of huge laugh moments, but there’s a charm here I was happy to pick up on. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentTime spent with Bill and Ted now may not always be gut-bustingly hilarious, but it’s comfy and familiar. Luke Y. Thompson, Superhero HypeThe movie’s so intent on rushing along that the barrage of jokes grow fuzzy and indistinct in the third act. Eric Kohn, IndieWireAnthony Carrigan is just exceptionally funny. Jimmy O, JoBloHow s the music? The high point of the movie is a harpsichord and Stratocaster duet played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Jimi Hendrix, a nicely conceived and executed demonstration of how genius recognizes genius. A.O. Scott, New York TimesThe universe-saving song has a bouncy hook I’ve been humming throughout the writing of this review. Dana Stevens, SlateThe movie has painted itself into a corner, because they’ve gotta play the song but no song can be so bodacious that it instantly unites the world. Steve Pond, The Wrap(Photo by Patti Perret/©Orion Pictures)Should they make more Bill Ted movies?Face the Music is probably the last Bill Ted movie we’ll get, and it makes the trilogy most triumphant. Matt Goldberg, ColliderI’m not sure if this will kick off a new franchise with the daughters but if so, I’m all in. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsIs this the best movie for the moment?Bill Ted Face the Music is the movie that 2020 needs. Rachel Leishman, The Mary SueBill Ted Face The Music is the movie we need right now. Norman Wilner, NOW TorontoFace the Music has a good message about the healing power of music and the comforting simplicity of friendship, and comes at a time when the world could use some good vibes. Adam Graham, The Detroit NewsIn its way, this closing chapter of the Bill Ted trilogy is an allegory for the status of Gen Xers in the dystopic landscape of 2020. Dana Stevens, SlateThis is the movie we really can use right now. Jimmy O, JoBloBill Ted Face the Music opens in select theaters on August 28.Thumbnail image by ©Orion Pictures
