The stylish, gritty descent into the criminal underworld rocked both sides of the Atlantic, which then gave Ritchie the opportunity to give his style an even slicker, international sheen with Snatch. So synonymous is Ritchie with this style and subject matter that no matter where his career takes him, whenever he returns to this topic it s always celebrated as a back-to-basics comeback. RocknRolla, for example, helped sweep away the sour tastes of Swept Away and Revolver. And now The Gentlemen and Wrath of Man have arrived as counterpoint to the blockbuster bombast of Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. (Though certainly Sherlock Holmes and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. found a happy, kinetic medium between these two extremes.)Which movies are his Freshest? So instead of the Great Eye of the film series, he will need to have a humanoid, often Elvish, shape. Sauron is a very active participant in the events of the Second Age, and not just in creating the Rings of Power, so he will need to be played by an on-screen actor.Early on, Sauron began building an army of Orcs, loyal Men, and other creatures. He even controlled territory in the southern region of Middle-earth before Númenóreans began establishing settlements on its shores. Skirmishes were inevitable, leading to Númenor taking up more and more of its resources in a battle against Sauron until, after hundreds of years, they raided his home in Mordor and physically took him prisoner.Of course, because Sauron was a master manipulator dedicated to perverting all Eru and the Valar established, he allowed himself to be taken back to Númenor. Once there, he began a campaign to sway the king, Ar-Pharazôn, to his side. After a number of years, Morgoth cults — with Sauron as their chief priest — operated in the open and Sauron became a key adviser to the king, promising faith in Morgoth would allow them to step foot in Aman and obtain immortality. Those still loyal to the Valar eventually decamped to Middle-earth, allowing Sauron’s scheme to come to fruition — much to the despair of the Númenóreans.Oh, also, he did all of this while leaving the One Ring back in Mordor. The Fall of Númenor is one of the great stories in Tolkien’s mythology (although many also enjoy the incomplete Second Age tale “The Mariner’s Wife”). Since it takes place over a great span of years, there is room for the series to build up characters such as Ar-Pharazôn and Elendil, the Númenórean who defied Sauron and helped establish the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth.We Will See Some Familiar Characters(Photo by Warner Bros.)Thanks to the way Tolkien mapped out the longevity of certain characters, there are a handful of well-known Lord of the Rings figures around to witness the events of the Second Age and the Fall of Númenor. Though nothing indicates any of the film series actors will reprise their roles, the Second Age setting allows room for some familiar characters.Elrond Half-elven (played by Hugo Weaving in Jackson s films), as his name implies, is a direct descendant of the First Age unions between Men and Elves who chose the fate of Elves. It makes him directly related to the kings of Númenor. During this time, he and Gil-Galad, the High Elven king in Middle-earth, had their own problems with Sauron. They saw the Númenóreans as allies — at least, until Sauron corrupted the seafarers. Nonetheless, it is possible we will see Elrond implore the Númenóreans to restore their ties with the Valar. With news of Clark s (pictured above) casting, Galadriel is certain to appear, which makes Celeborn (Marton Csokas in the films) highly likely. Both hail from the First Age, with Galadriel possessing a firsthand account of an Elvish migration from Aman to Middle-earth. Celeborn’s history is a little more imprecise, as Tolkien could never decide if he was born in Aman or Middle-earth. But both are, by human standards, impossibly old and witnesses to just about every historic event in Middle-earth up until they departed with Frodo to Aman at the end of The Lord of the Rings. As with Elrond, their concerns are local (with Sauron’s forces encroaching on their kingdom by the River Anduin), but it is always possible they will be around to sow the seeds of the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, the epic battle that could very well close out the series as a whole a few years from now.And Some New Faces As Well(Photo by Daybreak Game Company)Should the series continue beyond Númenor’s downfall, it is possible audiences could see two of the five Wizards arrive in Middle-earth. Though the Fall of Númenor left the Valar estranged from the world, they sent five Maiar spirits in the shapes of frail old men to rally the people of Middle-earth against Sauron (who survived the Fall, only losing his “fair” appearance). While most of the Wizards arrived in Middle-earth a thousand years into the Third Age, the two Blue Wizards Tolkien never really developed may have arrived during the Second Age, just after the Fall. Only mentioned in his unfinished tales, the pair quickly made their way to the East and either succumbed to Sauron’s influence or died as they failed to sway the Easterlings away from the Dark Lord. Presuming Amazon’s deal with the Tolkien estate includes unfinished material like the tale of the wizards, they would be ideal characters to utilize in the series. They could be villains, fallen heroes, or anything in between.Another character worthy of inclusion is the legendary Elf hero Glorfindel. While he “died” during the Fall of Gondolin in the First Age of Middle-earth, he eventually returned from Aman, possibly alongside the Blue Wizards, to aid both men and Elves in their struggle against Sauron during the Second Age. He makes a notable appearance early in The Lord of the Rings as he helps deliver Frodo to Rivendell. But after attending the Council of Elrond, Glorfindel drops out of the narrative until Aragorn’s wedding to Arwen. While other on-screen adaptations have substituted recurring characters for Glorfindel rather than introduce a new character to their stories — Jackson replaced him with Arwen (played by Liv Tyler), giving her an early heroic moment, while animated film director Ralph Bakshi subbed in Legolas — he is an interesting character out in the wide world during the period indicated on the map and fans would be thrilled to see him. (Orlando Bloom played Legolas in Jackson s films.)Other characters definitely alive at the time include Tom Bombadil (pictured above as portrayed in the Lord of the Rings Online video game), who himself suggests he’s the oldest consciousness in the world, and Legolas’ father Thranduil (played by Lee Pace in Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy), who has a pretty interesting story in his own right. The Devices of the Enemy(Photo by Warner Bros.)As Sauron assails all of Middle-earth in this period, he has vast resources of Orcs and Men at his disposal. But fans of the films will recognize his phantom lieutenants, the Nazgul, as a significant part of this army.If the series centers on Sauron’s time in Númenor, the nine kings of Men will already have their rings. For much of the Second Age they enjoyed the wealth and prosperity Sauron promised the rings would give them, but they were his wraiths by the time he left with Ar-Pharazôn. Presumably, they kept his affairs in order even as his capture halted the war against the people of Middle-earth.Should the series continue beyond the fall, they could become active antagonists against the likes of Elrond, Galadriel, and Elendil’s sons Isildur and Anárion — conflicts that will eventually lead to the Last Alliance.
egoers had a choice between worms in ears or maggots in meat. The return of the Enterprise crew was challenged by their archenemy from the episode Space Seed, and it became what is considered to this day to be the definitive Star Trek adventure. Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist actually opened that weekend to less than half of what Khan grossed, but audiences kept it in theaters past that Halloween, and it became not just the eighth highest-grossing film of the year (Khan was sixth), but has endured as one of the classic horror films passed down to new generations.BLADE RUNNER THE THING(Photo by Warner Bros., Universal Pictures)Date: June 25, 1982Even the most loyal genre enthusiasts may not have appreciated this date at the time. It was two weeks into the run of audiences falling in love with Steven Spielberg’s E.T. and a shift into darker, nastier science-fiction may not have been what they were in the mood for. Ridley Scott’s follow-up to Alien opened in fourth and John Carpenter’s grisly remake of The Thing (From Another World) was a distant eighth. Cut to decades of home video, cable, and revival screenings later, and they are now both considered irreplaceable, seminal examples of genre filmmaking.RAISING ARIZONA EVIL DEAD 2(Photo by 20th Century Fox, Rosebud Communications Releasing)Date: Mar. 13, 1987While the sequel/remake to Sam Raimi’s cult horror classic was finding its audience in 330 theaters, Joel and Ethan Coen’s follow-up to their breakthrough, Blood Simple, was released in one theater and had one of the best per-theater-averages for a single screen release in the 1980s. No film did better in 1987 than Raising Arizona did in as few theaters (.8 million in fewer than 700 theaters), and Evil Dead 2 made nearly million in no more than 310. No one would confuse their success in the moment with that of Ghostbusters or Gremlins, but the kinetic energy and wildly energetic performances in both films have been finding new fans for decades.DIE HARD A FISH CALLED WANDA(Photo by 20th Century Fox, MGM)Date: July 15, 1988After a decade defined by the muscle-bound heroes created by Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, a new action hero was born with John McClane in Die Hard. Please God, don’t let me die, said the average-Joe cop played by Bruce Willis, and an icon was born in a film that would be foolish to leave off any list of the greatest action films ever made. While McClane fought international bearer bond bandits, an English barrister by the name of Archie Leach was matching wits with American diamond thieves in A Fish Called Wanda, written by Monty Python’s John Cleese and directed by Ealing Studios’ Charles Crichton. It opened in limited release and found a broader audience three weeks later a reminder that sometimes classics are right under your nose whether you realize it at the time or not. These films were the seventh and twelfth highest-grossing movies of 1988, but their cultural impact is priceless.BOYZ N THE HOOD POINT BREAK(Photo by Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox)Date: July 12, 1991Two vastly different visions of Southern California opened on the same day in 1991, and each struck a major chord in the zeitgeist for different reasons, and at different times. The recently passed John Singleton exploded onto the scene with the most potent cultural commentary on the African-American community since Do the Right Thing, and the success of Boyz N the Hood led to his becoming the youngest director nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, not to mention the first African-American ever. Meanwhile, on the other side of street, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves were surfing and robbing banks. Though it was hardly a major success at the time, Point Break has grown its following over the years, partly for Keanu’s newfound cult hero status, but also for the unmistakable technique (and commentary on Reagan-era action films) from Kathryn Bigelow, who 18 years later would become the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar.PULP FICTION HOOP DREAMS(Photo by Miramax Films, Fine Line Features)Date: Oct. 14, 1994After notable festival successes at Sundance and Cannes, two of the most influential films of the 1990s opened in theaters. Reservoir Dogs was Quentin Tarantino’s calling card, but Pulp Fiction was the movie that brought his unique blend of dialogue, violence, and cinematic homage to the masses. His fractured narrative became the most replicated style for the rest of the decade and beyond. Meanwhile, Steve James’ three-hour documentary about two Chicago basketball players opened in just three theaters, but thanks in part to extensive praise and coverage by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, it became the second highest-grossing documentary ever (behind only Madonna: Truth or Dare) at the time and helped change the landscape for the format as a viable commercial entity.TOY STORY CASINO(Photo by Buena Vista, Universal Pictures)Date: Nov. 22, 1995Few likely remember the other Thanksgiving releases (Money Train and Nick of Time) that came out the same weekend Toy Story and Casino hit theaters. It isn t just because they are forgettable films, but because the latter two marked a return to a familiar universe for one legend and the beginning of another in the world of animation. Pixar’s debut came in the midst of the Disney animated renaissance that peaked a year earlier with The Lion King. Toy Story introduced moviegoers to a revolutionary style of animation that, along with the friendship of Woody and Buzz and lessons in growing older, has endured through two sequels with a third on the horizon. Over in the next cinema, Martin Scorsese returned to the mob world for his tale of the end of their reign in Las Vegas. While some have seen Casino as treading some of the same water as Goodfellas, Scorsese has acknowledged it as a de facto sequel in respects, and the film continues to be reassessed by critics as an essential chapter in the filmmaker’s oeuvre of greed, hubris, and the collapse that follows.JUMANJI HEAT(Photo by Sony Pictures, Warner Bros.)Date: Dec. 15, 1995After families flocked to Pixar’s Toy Story for three weeks, they then made Joe Johnston’s fantasy adventure the No. 1 film in the country, and it became one of just 10 films that year to gross 0 million. Jumanji has seen a resurgence after the passing of its star Robin Williams in 2014 and the immense success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017, the sequel to which is scheduled to be released later this year. Adults, meanwhile, got the first face-to-face encounter between Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in Michael Mann’s epic crime drama Heat. It functioned as a showcase not only for the two legendary actors, but also for the greatest moments from the films Mann made that nobody saw (particularly his TV film, L.A. Takedown). The gritty thriller has been celebrated by audiences for decades, and it s now considered Mann’s most recognizable crime drama.THE MATRIX 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU(Photo by Warner Bros., Buena Vista Pictures)Date: Mar. 31, 1999What Pulp Fiction did for crime narratives, The Matrix did for sci-fi and special effects. Keanu Reeves appears again on this list, putting his stamp on yet another seminal action extravaganza. The Wachowskis molded together cyberpunk, a little Terminator, and even some philosophy into a film that became the highest-grossing film ever released in March or April. Though the sequels split fans, the original endures to this day. 1999 was also a watershed year for teen movies, and The Matrix found itself competing against one of the defining films of that era. At the time, 10 Things I Hate About You failed to pull audiences away from the Wachowskis explosive adventure, and several others in its own genre proved more profitable that year (American Pie, She’s All That, Never Been Kissed, Varsity Blues, and Cruel Intentions all did better). But 20 years later, the film has outlasted that barrage and become celebrated as a seminal coming-of-age film for audiences of a certain age. Like Clueless four years earlier, 10 Things relied on classic literature for its inspiration and featured early work from a young powerhouse cast that included Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles, Gabrielle Union and, of course, the late Heath Ledger.ELF LOVE ACTUALLY(Photo by New Line Cinema, Universal Pictures)Date: Nov. 7, 2003Before Ron Burgundy, there was Buddy the elf, and before Love Actually, there was no such thing as love. OK, maybe not exactly, but in their own ways, both Elf and Love Actually have become staples of Christmas viewing, perpetually programmed on television alongside other modern regulars like A Christmas Story and It s A Wonderful Life. Will Ferrell had not had anything close to a success like this (out-dueling even The Matrix Revolutions), and to this day, it is still his highest-grossing live-action film. Richard Curtis’ film, on the other hand, was a more modest success at the time, but it has since been referenced in everything from proposals to parodies to politics. For a genre that is often replicated ad nauseum, this sprawling romantic epic has rarely been duplicated in the territory it covers.Like this? 9.65.4 9月喜迎Starting with two brothers, a beloved Chevy Impala, and some demon-hunting equipment, Supernatural defied the odds to become one of the longest-running primetime shows in television history. It is also one of the few genre shows to break the tenth season mark, joining the classic Doctor Who in a very rarefied club of long, continuous production runs. When Rotten Tomatoes spoke with the cast and producers during a celebration of the program’s 300th episode, they all credited its longevity to two factors: first, stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, and second, the on-set family dynamic that now includes a large stable of recurring characters and eventual co-leads like Misha Collins.“I think that my favorite [aspect] is the growing family dynamic of the show where the core cast, which used to be just Sam and Dean, has really become a legitimate group of people who very much love each other and care about each other,” said executive producer Brad Buckner. That family feel was on display in the 300th episode, which aired last month, but it left us wondering where the show can go now. Have the Winchesters driven every highway, rural route, private drive, parkway and surface street in their never-ending relationship with forces beyond imaging? The CW doesn’t think so, considering the network has already renewed the program for a historic 15th season. But let’s take a look at some directions Supernatural could go next.Alien Invasion(Photo by Mars Attacks!: ©Warner Bros./Courtesy Everett Collection; Supernatural: Dean Buscher/The CW)To be sure, this is a pie-in-the-sky idea considering creator Eric Kripke s stated rule that aliens do not exist in the Supernatural universe. Over the years, the show has poked fun at its slight similarities to The X-Files via a handful of episodes in which aliens turn out to be fairies or frauds. It is a completely understandable decision as the show is literally called Supernatural. You really don’t expect to see E.T. or grey aliens plotting with Rowena (Ruth Connell) or Alternate Michael (various actors including Ackles). But now that the image is in your mind, consider this little thought experiment: What if they suddenly arrived and defied everyone’s assumption that they were not real. What if the angels and demons had no knowledge of them and could not account for their existence? Suddenly, the assumed political paradigm of the cosmos is upended because God never mentioned that he created other life in the universe. Alliances would have to be made, as well.It leads to plenty of questions. Are the aliens bound by the same rules of engagement? Do they have their own versions of angels and demons to contend with? Are there alien equivalents of Heaven and Hell? In which case, does each sentient alien race have one of its own and why would God make things so complicated? For the boys, it would start with disbelief and, no doubt, an eventual alliance with at least one extraterrestrial. Similarly, their adversaries would be looking for the angle immediately. And that s before the show even thinks to introduce a second alien species. But on a larger scale, it would be interesting to see all of these impossibly old spirits lose their sense of security because a completely unknown element is in orbit above the Earth.Yeah, it’s a reach, but it would be a funny one.A Return to the Road(Photo by Sergei Bachlakov/The CW)Since season 8, the Winchesters have had a place to call home within the bunker formerly used by the Men of Letters. It offers them a respite from their investigations even if it comes under attack from within and without all the time. But when it was first introduced, it was meant to change one key element of the show: Sam and Dean’s eternal journey across the country solving weird events. Six years later, it feels like the boys could lose the bunker and roam around essentially homeless. The material to write that story is there and, really, losing the sense of security the Bunker offers would be a huge shock to their systems — even more shocking than Sam or Dean getting possessed again. And since it seems neither brother will ever have any semblance of a domestic life, removing their sense of home would reinforce that they are riding or dying together. This could go to the extreme of removing Castiel, Mary (Samantha Smith), and Jack (Alexander Calvert) — which would be a shocking turn at this point – but even if the five of them are forced to move from town to town, it could alter the program’s dynamic in unexpected and interesting ways.Monsters of Myth(Photo by Michael Muller/The CW)There was a time, 14 years ago, when the show was about Sam and Dean following up on urban legends and mythical creature sightings. Their dealings with Lucifer and the political structure of Heaven appeared later (even if it was seeded from the start). What if, suddenly, the forces of Heaven and Hell were gone? In the absence of demons and angels, wendigos, fairy folk, will-o -the-wisps, jiangshi, and other creatures could try to hold sway upon the Earth. One imagines they would try to fill the power vacuum left by the departed angels and demons. It would reframe Sam and Dean’s mission and, possibly, create an end point for their fight as they clear away all of the supernatural creatures. Of course, they would be faced with the existential reality that evil can originate in humans without any supernatural source, but then it would be a different show.Maybe that’s the Supernatural spin-off The CW would actually pick up to series. The Road No One Will Take(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)There is definitely one version of the show producers say they will never try to do: one in which either Sam or Dean is gone permanently.“The heart and soul of this show is really the relationship with the brothers,” executive producer Robert Singer told Rotten Tomatoes. “They just deliver and their personal relationship is so close. That really comes through on screen. I ve actually done shows where the two actors weren t quite as fond of each other, and I think that shows up on screen. But these guys are great and they just live in these characters and so it s easy for us to write for them.”Singer and Buckner both agreed that losing one of their leads would mean to end the show.As it happens, Supernatural even offered its own example of what the show would look like with a Winchester brother absent: The survivor leaves the life and settles down. Now, we would love to see Ackles in show where he is a retired hero trying to adjust to the humdrum suburban world, but we wouldn t want that show to be an AfterSupernatural style spin-off or, worse, a Padalecki-less season 16.Nonetheless, Supernatural keeps finding ways to keep its flame alive. It bends the Winchesters into impossible shapes, ports them over to alternate realities, and even reunites them with long-lost family. It also keeps the politics of the Heavens strange and compelling. Maybe that s enough fuel to get the Impala to season 20.Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
When the Russo Bros.-produced action-thriller Extraction landed on Netflix in April, it arrived with all the heft of a major theatrical release. Much of that was because quarantined fans were dying for something big and splashy and new to watch – anything, really, that felt like going to the movies – but it was also because the film came with the kind of big-budget action set pieces usually reserved for the big screen – and the big-screen leading man, Chris Hemsworth, to go with it. Extraction s story is simple: Hemsworth s Tyler Rake (yep, that s his character s name!) is a mercenary hired to extract a kidnapped teenage boy from the clutches of a Bangladeshi crime boss, and he must contend with countless nameless baddies to achieve his goal. The action, though, is anything but: close-combat John Wick-style tussles, epic single-shot sequences, Bond-level escapes from hairy, bullet-filled situations. Fans have been eating it up; but it s a short-lived meal. When the smoke on Extraction has cleared, and you re looking for something to keep the adrenaline pumping, we ve got some suggestions for you. Whether you re after more urgent-feeling get-the-job-done thrills, a tender – and violent – kid/mercenary relationship, or just incredible chaotic action, let RT correspondent Naz Perez be your guide in the video above.
This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Ferrari, The Flash, The Magic School Bus, and a remake of Twister. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARGOT ROBBIE IS THE NEW PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN CAPTAIN (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)There have been hints in the real world for a while now that Walt Disney Pictures had plans for Pirates of the Caribbean following Johnny Depp s run as Captain Jack Sparrow. Most of this has revolved around the character of Redd, a female pirate who became a featured greeter at the Disney parks in 2018. In late breaking news this Friday, we now know that Margot Robbie is attached to star in a new Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff that will be written by Christina Hodson, who worked with Robbie on this year s Birds of Prey. The new film hasn t actually been confirmed to be a Redd movie quite yet, but that s where the speculation is quickly turning. In a somewhat surprising twist, this new Margot Robbie Pirates of the Caribbean movie will also reportedly be separate from the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot by original Pirates of the Caribbean co-writer Ted Elliot and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin previously, many thought their movie would be the one to introduce Redd. It s possible that Walt Disney Pictures is developing both of these projects to improve their chances that one of them will reach the greenlight stage (Paramount has been doing this for a while with their Transformers projects, including Bumblebee, also written by Hodson). There is no current release date for any new Pirates of the Caribbean project, but with everything going on in the world, it s unlikely it could be before the summer of 2022.Other Top Headlines1. WANNA GET NUTS? MICHAEL KEATON WILL RETURN AS BATMAN IN THE FLASH (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)The longer big-budget movies take to get produced, the more likely it is that their storylines will twist and change, but at least at one point, the upcoming solo movie for The Flash was going to adapt the Flashpoint premise, which includes both time travel and parallel world -type adventures. Flashpoint eventually became a big part of the TV show The Flash as well, leading to a recent scene during the Crisis on Infinite Earths events when the Ezra Miller s and Grant Gustin s separate versions of the Flash actually met. Possibly confirming a similar story for The Flash (6/2/2022), Michael Keaton is now signed to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne A.K.A. Batman from his two movies with director Tim Burton (1989 s Batman, Fresh at 71%; and 1992 s Batman Returns, Certified Fresh at 79%). The inclusion of Keaton s Batman in The Flash is reportedly meant to establish that there is not just one DC Universe, so that the characters like those in the Arrowverse, Stargirl, Joaquin Phoenix s Joker, Robert Pattinson s The Batman, and the DCEU occupied by Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman, all exist in separate realities. It s a stark departure from the way Marvel Studios has kept the Marvel Cinematic Universe going in one consistent setting since the first Iron Man in 2008 (the Fox/Marvel movies like X-Men and Deadpool don t count). Warner Bros. is also keeping the door open for other future appearances by Michael Keaton as the older Batman, which might include the long-in-development Batgirl solo movie.2. DISNEY AND LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA GOING TO COLOMBIA FOR ENCANTO (Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)After attaining fame with the hit Broadway musical Hamilton (a filmed version of which is coming to Disney+ on July 3, 2020), Lin-Manuel Miranda expanded into film and animation, including work with Disney on Mary Poppins Returns (in which he co-starred) and Moana (for which he co-wrote the songs). We ve also known for a while that Miranda has a project with Sony Animation called Vivo (6/4/2021), and this week, another new project with Disney Animation was revealed. Talking to Good Morning America on Monday, Lin-Manuel Miranda mentioned that he is spending his quarantine-at-home time working on an untitled Disney animation project set in Colombia. Reportedly, the project will be directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, who worked with Miranda as the directors of Moana (Certified Fresh at 95%). This news came just a few days after this Disney blog reported that Miranda, Howard, and Bush were working on a Disney musical called Encanto (Spanish for charm ), about a young girl from a magical family who herself does not have any magical powers. Some sites are already listing Encanto with a possible release date of November 24, 2021, but release dates are obviously very fluid right now.3. HUGH JACKMAN TO REV HIS ENGINE IN MICHAEL MANN S FERRARI BIOPIC(Photo by Wilson Webb/©Warner Bros.)One of the biggest box office surprises of late 2019 may have been the car race period piece Ford v Ferrari (Certified Fresh at 92%), which was able to earn over 7 million in the USA and over 5 million globally. It was not the only Ferrari project being developed at the time, though, as director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral, Public Enemies) had also been trying to get his own biopic project going about the life of Italian automobile tycoon Enzo Ferrari, who also played a pivotal role in Ford v Ferrari. Michael Mann s Ferrari project is now being sold at the Cannes Virtual Market with Hugh Jackman attached to star as Enzo Ferrari. The focus of Ferrari will be the summer of 1957 (nine years before the events of Ford v Ferrari) when both Ferrari s personal and professional lives were in turmoil. Mann reportedly completed a new rewrite of the Ferrari screenplay, which is based on the Brock Yates book Enzo Ferrari The Man and the Machine. Of course, it s worth noting that Hugh Jackman is very specifically Australian, so it will be interesting to see if he attempts to appropriate any sort of Italian accent in the new film.4. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S TENET DELAYED AGAIN, SIGNALING BAD NEWS FOR THE SUMMER OF 2020 (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Not that long ago, many in Hollywood were hopeful that movie theaters could be back in business by July, but that was before recent reports of the COVID-19 pandemic numbers going up in many states and Governor Cuomo of New York postponing movie theater reopenings. Even as dozens of projects were delayed from this summer (or went Video-on-Demand), Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan have been adamant about Nolan s action film Tenet remaining a summer 2020 movie (though they did delay Tenet earlier this month from July 17 to July 31). Well, Warner Bros. has moved Tenet again, this time back another two weeks to August 12, 2020 (two days before Bill Ted Face the Music and Greenland on 8/14/2020). With this move, the most anticipated movie still scheduled for July (for now) is Disney s Mulan (7/24/2020), but speculation is high that Mulan will also be delayed. Other movies still scheduled for July include Unhinged (7/10/2020), The Broken Hearts Gallery, and Cut Throat City (both 7/17/2020). In related news, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, previously scheduled for a theatrical release on May 22, 2020, will now debut as a streaming title sometime in early 2021.5. TWISTER GETTING A REMAKE FROM TOP GUN: MAVERICK DIRECTOR (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Although the genre is seemingly being kept alive singlehandedly by Gerard Butler (Geostorm, next month s Greenland), the disaster movie is not as common in recent years as it was in the 1990s and 2000s, when titles like Independence Day, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact, and Armageddon were major box office hits. 1996 in particular was a big year for the genre with the #1 film being Independence Day and #2 being Twister (Rotten at 57%). Perhaps seeing Twister as even more relevant now (thanks to climate change), Universal Pictures is actively developing a remake. Director Joseph Kosinski, who has worked with Tom Cruise twice (Oblivion and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick) is now in talks for the Twister remake with screenwriters currently being sought. It s currently unclear how closely the new film will stick to the storyline of the original, which focused on a team of storm chasers played by Helen Hunt, the late Bill Paxton, and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Kosinski was also at one time developing a remake of The Black Hole for Disney, but that project appears to have been scrapped (or, at best, delayed indefinitely).6. JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION WILL REINTRODUCE OBSCURE JURASSIC PARK CHARACTER(Photo by Universal Pictures)When we first started hearing about the upcoming third Jurassic World movie we now know as Jurassic World: Dominion (6/11/2021), one of the biggest stories was that it would feature the return of three of the original Jurassic Park stars: Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill, all reprising the same characters. Characters from the first Jurassic Park have returned before, including the kids in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and BD Wong in Jurassic World, but Jurassic World: Dominion will feature another surprising return. Campbell Scott has reportedly signed on to co-star in Jurassic World: Dominion as Dr. Lewis Dodgson, a character from Michael Crichton s novels who appeared in Jurassic Park as the mysterious figure who gave Wayne Knight s character the cannister in which to put the stolen dinosaur embyros. Scott is taking over the role likely to be one of the film s villains because the actor who played Dodgson in Jurassic Park, Cameron Thor, is no longer available. 7. ELIZABETH BANKS TO DRIVE THE LIVE-ACTION MAGIC SCHOOL BUS(Photo by Saeed Adyani/©Netflix)After a long history of animated TV shows based on their various characters, Scholastic Entertainment is now starting to develop more and more theatrical feature films, including Goosebumps (Certified Fresh at 78%), Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (Rotten at 48%), the upcoming Clifford the Big Red Dog (11/13/2020), and announced just last week, the Animorphs movie. We will also soon be able to add a live-action adaptation of The Magic School Bus to that list, as Elizabeth Banks has signed on to produce and star as Ms. Frizzle, the teacher who drives the bus as it takes kids on adventures through time and space. In the animated TV series, Ms. Frizzle was originally voiced by Lily Tomlin, with Kate McKinnon coming on board later to voice her sister. The Magic School Bus will be distributed by Universal Pictures, which is also the studio that released the three Pitch Perfect movies in which Elizabeth Banks also co-starred (and she also directed Pitch Perfect 2).8. BILL MURRAY TO VOICE A DOG IN BUM S RUSH (Photo by Fox Searchlight courtesy Everett Collection)After starring in both Garfield: The Movie (Rotten at 15%) and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (Rotten at 11%) (and thankfully, not a Garfield 3 as seen in Zombieland: Double Tap), Bill Murray also voiced one of the talking dogs in frequent collaborator Wes Anderson s Isle of Dogs (Certified Fresh at 90%). This week, Murray signed on for yet another voice role as a stray dog named Bum in Bum s Rush, along with Anne Hathaway and Robert Duvall. Bum s Rush will be directed by Aaron Schneider (Greyhound, Get Low) from a screenplay by C. Gaby Mitchell, who received a story credit on Blood Diamond and co-wrote Get Low. The independent drama will be filmed in Santa Barbara and New Mexico, though it s unclear, as many film productions are forced to address, when exactly they might be able to get that done. Hathaway will play a custom boot maker who befriends Murray s Bum as these two independent souls find themselves at a serious crossroads, one that will change both their hearts and minds in ways they can hardly imagine. 9. SCI-FI COMEDY ALPHA GANG RECRUITS STAR-STUDDED ENSEMBLE CAST (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)As movies are increasingly based more on concept or franchise than the star s fame, we see fewer stories about the sort of star-driven projects that used to be the norm. That said, the Cannes Film Festival or, as it s been rebranded this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Cannes Virtual Market remains one of the places where these sort of retro star-driven projects can still generate interest. One of the movies at the market this year is a sci-fi comedy called Alpha Gang, about a group of aliens who are sent on a mission to conquer Earth disguised as a gang of bikers. Alpha Gang will feature an ensemble cast that includes Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Independence Day: Insurgence), Jon

Things, as you may imagine, don t go as planned. Though Barking Dogs is underseen in the West compared to the rest of Bong s filmography (it doesn t have enough reviews for a Tomatometer), the film immediately established the trademarks that would ultimately lead Bong to a historic Oscar victory, including the director s taste for dark humor, lethal thrills, and social commentary, all wrapped in elusive and smooth filmmaking technique. His follow-up, 2003 s Memories of Murder, established Bong as one to watch on the international scene, a director able to take influences from Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and David Fincher and mold them into something fresh. The Host expanded his audience thanks to its high-concept monster movie angle, palatable for genre fans searching for something outside of mainstream fare. He collaborated with Michel Gondry and Leos Carax for Tokyo!. And with Mother, Bong bent the horror genre to his will. Sci-fi was next with Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans, who naturally drew in plenty of outside interest: Come for Captain America, stay for the kooky and violent class-society parable set on a post-apocalyptic winter train. 2017 s Okja, an environmentalist fable, continued to see Bong refining his ability to mix wildly disparate genres and tones. Every movie he s directed has been designated Certified Fresh by the critics. This all came to a head with Parasite, the unclassifiable film that has whipped audiences into a frenzy for its twisty plot, brazen character work, and social outrage. Parasite made history when it became the first non–English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Bong collected that statue at the 2020 ceremony, along with Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best International Film, tying Walt Disney for the most Oscars awarded to a person in a single night.Having officially put South Korea on the map forever in cinema, we re looking back on Bong Joon-ho s movies, ranked by Tomatometer.

This weekend in Telluride attendees will get their first glimpse of Zellweger as the tragic starlet Judy Garland. Telluride is also honoring the actress with a tribute that will run before several screenings of Judy. After a string of sometimes downright nasty media coverage over the last few years, many are thrilled that Zellweger has reemerged better than ever in this second act of her storied career with two very different projects. Earlier this year she played a femme fatale Gordan Gecko type in Netflix s What/If, and this week at Telluride we see her take on one of the world s most beloved singer-actresses – a role which has already put her in the conversation for Best Actress after the first trailer dropped.Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92%A world premiere for James Mangold s Ford v. Ferrari is quite the statement for Telluride. As the fall lineup becomes increasingly more competitive, films with mega-watt stars and masses of buzz are still jockeying with similar titles at just about every festival stop. Perhaps this is why the Matt Damon/Christian Bale drama chose to skip the Venice Film Festival (a logical stop most years) and come straight to Telluride; the move makes the racing movie one of the biggest films of the program and one of the hottest tickets. The film chronicles the true-life tale of how the Ford Motor Company worked tirelessly to build a car that could beat racing powerhouse Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966. Damon plays famed Ford car designer Carroll Shelby and Bale is behind the wheel as racing legend Ken Miles. If we trust the first trailer, this could well be a funny, fast-paced adventure and a perfect awards launch pad or Mangold, Damon, and Bale.Marriage Story (2019) 94%
