We also included classic sitcoms that remain some of the best examples of the genre, like The Jeffersons, 227, Living Single, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Moesha, and Martin. The list, produced in conjunction with our corporate chapter of the Black Employee Network, also includes critically-hailed dramas, like When They See Us, The Chi, and British titles Luther and Top Boy. There are titles from celebrated creators (Donald Glover s Atlanta, Steve McQueen s Small Axe film anthology, and Michaela Coel s I May Destroy You); award-show standouts (Watchmen, Euphoria, and Pose); and shows with seasons that are Certified Fresh at 100% (David Makes Man, A Black Lady Sketch Show, and P-Valley).While you ve probably seen many of the excellent titles on this list, there s no time like the present to start another binge or to make room on your streaming queue for a show you haven t discovered yet.Be sure to also catch some of the new premieres coming in February, including The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah; Young Rock, based on the early days of action superstar Dwayne Johnson; Kenan Thompson s new NBC comedy, Kenan; FX docuseries Hip Hop Uncovered; and Netflix drama Ginny Georgia and reality series Buried by the Bernards.Related: Black History Month TV Calendar 2021We ll add more to this list as new shows become bingeable. Sophie-Marie Prime for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you become a part of The Dirt? You were originally interested in playing Tommy Lee, and you were steered towards the role of Nikki Sixx…Yeah, I read the script, and Tommy just seemed such a fun part to play because he s just so lovable. And so, I auditioned, and it looked like I was gonna play Tommy Lee. And then eventually they said, Look, we can t find anyone to play Nikki Sixx… Would you mind doing a tape? I remember feeling intimidated by the idea, because he s a very different character, and it s hard to put your finger on who he is… But then I did it, and they said they thought it was great, and they asked if I would play Nikki. I said yes, and it was the best decision I made. I absolutely loved playing him, and I can t imagine anyone else but Colson [Baker] playing Tommy. Were you a fan of Mötley Crüe s music? Not really. I mean, I was aware of their music, because obviously they re such a big part of that time period and culture in that time. I d heard them on the radio, and they have some great tunes. But it wasn t until I started this movie and actually spent time with it and spent time being them playing it that I fell in love with it — and now, I love it.(Photo by Jake Giles Netter/Courtesy of Netflix)How involved were Nikki and the band in the making of the movie? Were they ever on set?I met Nikki before, and then Tommy and Nikki came to New Orleans a couple days before we started shooting and joined our band practice we had. We d been doing it for a month in New Orleans, all the boys together, and they taught us They gave us tips and gave us some advice on the way they played, how they played, and the way they d hold their instrument, and the way they do things, so that was very useful. They were involved a perfect amount. They were a band who were very generous and gave thoughts, they gave advice, but then also trusted us to play our roles and took a step back while we filmed.Do you remember any specific props that came from the band directly?Well, to do with the guitars and the amps, when Iwan [Rheon] sat down and spoke to Mick Mars, all they talked about for two hours was different types of amps and stuff like that. Mick s all about the music I didn t know how Nikki would react to all of the drug paraphernalia. He s so sober now, and he had such a hard time battling his addiction problems, but once we got to set, was like, Show me all the drug paraphernalia. He was kind curious about it, and wanted to see what it was like, and make sure they got it right.Did he want to make sure it was realistic?Make sure it was real, but he s done so much to help other people with opioid problems, and it s something that was important to him, just to be done right and tastefully, and not shy away from the realities.

8.16.0 4月喜迎HER NOLAN, AND THE WITCHES REMAKE(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)For obvious calendar-related reasons, January is often a time when we see a lot of big future release dates. Although we know nothing else about it, the biggest reveal of this batch is the next film from director Christopher Nolan: IMAX on July 17, 2020, up against the Bob s Burgers movie and The Spongebob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge. A week earlier, on July 10, 2020, we ll get Ghostbusters 3, the direct sequel to the first two films, rumored to feature new teenage Ghostbusters. Later that month, on July 31, 2020, Sony has scheduled the Marvel s Morbius, the vampire antihero movie starring Jared Leto and Doctor Who star Matt Smith. Earlier in that year, May 8 will be the new release date for Greyhound, a World War II naval drama starring Tom Hanks, a date also claimed by Reese Witherspoon s Legally Blonde 3. January 3, 2020 will be the new release date for the reboot of The Grudge (which had previously been scheduled for this summer). Later in 2020, we ll also have the remake of The Witches (10/16/2020), starring Anne Hathaway in the role originally played by Anjelica Huston. 4. ZENDAYA AND OSCAR ISAAC ARE THE LATEST STARS JOINING THE DUNE REBOOT(Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)Frank Herbert s classic science fiction novel Dune features a massive ensemble cast of characters, and so we re in the midst of what will be several weeks of role announcements. To date, we ve already heard about Timothée Chalamet in the lead role as Paul Atreides, as well as Rebecca Ferguson (as Lady Jessica), Charlotte Rampling (as Reverend Mother Mohiam), Stellan Skarsgård (as Baron Harkonnen), and Dave Bautista (as The Beast Rabban). This week, we can now add to the mix Spider-Man: Homecoming costar Zendaya, who is in early talks to play Chalamet s romantic interest, Chani. Oscar Isaac, who is coming off playing Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awaken, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and this December s Star Wars Episode IX, is in talks to play Duke Leto Atreides. 5. THREE RECENT ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS JOIN THE HEART (Photo by Fox Searchlight courtesy Everett Collection)In addition to playing Dean Pelton on Community, Jim Rash is also a writer and director who with his partner Nat Faxon has previously worked on The Descendants and The Way Way Back. For their next film, The Heart, Rash and Faxon are arguably stacking the deck by recruiting three recent Academy Award winners: Allison Janney, who won a Supporting Actress Oscar last year for I, Tonya; Octavia Spencer, who won in that category for 2012 s The Help; and Sam Rockwell also won last year for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Rockwell and Spencer will play people desperate for cash who agree to courier a black market human heart in what they soon discover is a very dangerous job. Janney plays Spencer s antagonist ex-boss. In related news, there are also now rumors that Janney and Rockwell may not be asked to present Academy Awards this year, as is often the tradition in the acting categories.6. THIS WEEK IN ZOMBIELAND: ROSARIO DAWSON JOINS SEQUEL, WOODY GOES FRUIT LOOPS (Photo by Glen Wilson/Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)Everything was awesome for Sony Pictures in 2018, and the studio is keeping this swinging with the Zombieland: Double Tap (10/11/2019) poster reveal, presented as a play on the social media 10 year challenge. That poster also showed off that all four Zombieland stars (Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin) are returning. We also learned this week that they will be joined by Rosario Dawson. Harrelson also made a new deal recently to star in the Fox 2000 drama Fruit Loops, which is described as a psychiatric hospital drama in the style of One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest. Fruit Loops will be directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures, St. Vincent), who also this week set up a new sci-fi project called Harry s All Night Hamburgers. 7. THE INVISIBLE MAN REBOOT IS HAPPENING AFTER ALL, BUT JOHNNY DEPP S DISAPPEAREDIn the months and weeks leading up to the 2017 release of The Mummy, Universal Pictures did a lot of press about how that reboot was going to lead to the Dark Universe cinematic universe, featuring classic Universal Monsters like Bride of Frankenstein and The Wolfman. The box office disappointment of The Mummy quickly led to the Dark Universe plans being dismantled, but we learned this week that some Universal Monsters will still get their reboot movies after all. In the Dark Universe plan, Johnny Depp was to have played The Invisible Man, but that movie is now moving forward without Depp. Instead, The Invisible Man is now being rebooted by Upgrade director Leigh Whannell at Blumhouse. The shift to Blumhouse for The Invisible Man (and possibly other Universal Monsters) is being perceived as a smart move, considering how Blumhouse has been able to deliver successful franchises like Insidious, Ouija, Paranormal Activity, and The Purge. 8. CAPTAIN MARVEL STAR BRIE LARSON STARTING A LADY BUSINESS AT NETFLIX(Photo by Claire Folger/Paramount Pictures)Just as Captain Marvel prepares to release March 8, Brie Larson is setting up at least one new project at Netflix, which is also where her directorial debut called Unicorn Store (debuting April 5) landed. Larson will star in and direct Lady Business, based upon the true stories of Witchsy founders Kate Dwyer and Penelope Gazin. Lady Business will tell the story of two female entrepreneurs who invent a third male company founder in order to be taken seriously in the business world. Rotten Idea1. PIKA-TWO: POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU ALREADY GETTING SEQUEL?(Photo by Warner Bros.)The videogame adaptation Pokémon Detective Pikachu (5/10/2019) is still over three months away, so we have no idea if it s going to be the big movie that breaks the Rotten curse of video game movies. After 25 years and nearly 50 Rotten video game movies, it s probably safe to be skeptical about all upcoming releases. This week, Warner Bros. revealed that they re already starting development on a Detective Pikachu sequel. The studio is doing that by hiring screenwriter Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox, co-writer of 22 Jump Street) to work on it. Other upcoming films Uziel has worked on include Sonic the Hedgehog (11/8/2019), Supergirl, and the Mortal Kombat reboot.
George R.R. Martin signs a reported eight-figure deal to develop more HBO and HBO Max programming, Indira Varma is among the new stars confirmed for Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Colin Firth will lead an eight-episode drama adaptation of classic true-crime docuseries The Staircase, and more of the week s top TV and streaming news.TOP STORYThe Game of Thrones Broadway Production Will Be a Prequel Story Featuring Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister(Photo by HBO )George R. R. Martin’s Game Of Thrones universe looks to dominate TV land for years to come, and now he has his sights set on The Great White Way: Martin is developing a Thrones stage show that he’s planning for a Broadway debut in 2023, THR reports. The production, which is also planned for London and Australia, will revolve around a prequel storyline, with characters deceased in the TV GoT timeline, like Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister, alive and kicking in the stage show. Despite the many GOT prequel stories being developed for TV, the play would mark the first time beloved characters from the HBO series will be revived for a new project. The play will specifically revolve around a historical event from Westeros’ past: The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, “a landmark event that previously was shrouded in mystery … a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing in prophecy … revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now,” according to THR. Given that setting, characters like Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, legendary knight Arthur Dayne, Robert Baratheon, Jaime Lannister, and Ned Stark would appear, likely as teenagers. Ned s sister Lyanna would also feature prominently, as her relationship with the prince — the spark that leads to Robert s Rebellion against the Mad King — is established publicly at the tournament. In other GOT news, George R.R. Martin just signed a five-year, eight-figure deal to create yet more programming for HBO and HBO Max.With half a dozen new projects in his A Song of Ice and Fire universe already in various states of development at HBO, Martin is also executive producing a pair of adaptations of other fantasy creators’ works for the network. The very busy author, producer, and entrepreneur also has a series in development at Peacock, a feature film to be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and, THR reports, even a theme park ride, via his experiential immersive entertainment company.Star Trek First Contact Day: Trekkies Gathering Online to Celebrate a Pivotal AnniversaryAs any devoted Trekkie – and anyone who saw the big-screen movie Star Trek: First Contact – knows, April 5, 2063, is the future date when humans first make contact with Vulcans, marking the historical beginning of collaboration, exploration, and acceptance in Trek history. Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol is one of the most-adapted tales in the history of the English language, and Steven Knight, creator of gritty period series Peaky Blinders and Taboo, is the latest talent to have taken on the task.We all know the story: crotchety miser Ebenezer Scrooge has a Christmas Eve night visitation from his dead former partner Jacob Marley, who warns him of three ghosts who will attend him as he walks through visions of Christmases past, present, and future. This new FX presentation, directed by Nick Murphy (The Awakening), stars Guy Pearce as Scrooge and Andy Serkis as a grumpy Ghost of Christmas Past and promises a darker take on the 1843 novella that made a superstar of its author: A Christmas Carol is a spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge s dark night of the soul, the promotional materials promise. It is a darker retelling. There s no question, Serkis told Rotten Tomatoes. It s a unique retelling in that respect because Scrooge in this is not some sort of old miser character. He s actually a tough businessmen who is in denial and doesn t want to really engage with his own moral relativism. We caught up with the stars to get a feel for the new adaptation — and it indeed feels scary. Here are five ways this Christmas Carol one-ups previous efforts.1. This Cool Scrooge Resonates With Modern Audiences(Photo by Kurt Iswarienko/FX)Scrooge is not as crotchety here as in previous interpretations of the character; in fact, the character may resemble more real-life people than ever before. Pearce offered a personal assessment of his character. They really wanted somebody this time who still had been affected in life the way that we know Scrooge has been, but that his demeanor and his presence in the world was more of a businessman, as a leader who is a kind of a cocky, confident, swaggering kind of asshole, basically, Pearce told Rotten Tomatoes. I think it was important for Nick, our director, and for Steven, our writer, to get away from the crotchety old man who exhibits on the surface the pain and damage that he s experienced in his life. And the fact that he s turned away from the world and plays somebody who s actually up front to the world and says, Come on, bring it on. Bring on your questions about who I am and what it is, because I ve got a really good response for you. And kind of like that, be a little bit more affronting and aggressive. And so, in a way, we still get to the point where we drag him through his past, and we make him look at the things he s done to people, and we crack open the soul that is a damaged soul. 2. This Ghost of Christmas Past Plays Dirty(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)But his Scrooge will face a harder fight in Knight s version, Pearce confirmed: It s a tougher journey because the Ghost of Christmas Past is a really hard nut to crack. The Ghost of Christmas Past is jaded, the character description offers. He’s been sent to make lost souls repent before, why should Scrooge be any different? He prods and pokes where it hurts, transforming himself into those known to his charge, finding a place of pain, shame and self-knowledge. But can he get Scrooge to recognize himself, and repent? 3. The Ghost of Christmas Present Has a Much More Personal Relationship With Scrooge(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Charlotte Riley appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present, while Jason Flemyng is the Ghost of Christmas Future. Both ghosts are updated here with new twists on the characters. She plays my sister who has died some years before, Pearce said, and she has now come back as the Ghost of Christmas Present. And — particularly after the ruthlessness of Andy Serkis Ghost of Christmas Past, who shape-shifts into all sorts of characters through my past, and he s really tough on me — then she comes in as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and it s my long lost dead sister, so it s so emotional and so touching and painful. And then it s capped off with Jason playing sort of ruthless again, but silent like the silent-killer kind of attitude, as the Ghost of Christmas Future. 4. Steven Knight s Take Is Indeed Chilling(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)One of the most unsettling features of the new story is how closely it hews to issues — and personalities — we face today, which is a very intentional choice. Serkis said he knew he was in for something special when he heard Knight was attached. When I heard that there was another version of Christmas Carol being made, I kind of thought, Wow, OK. Again? Another one?' he said. But as soon as I knew that Steven Knight was writing it, I knew that now, This is going to be an interesting take, because I knew this was going to be the beginning of a journey into his exploration of Dickens in other stories as well, which is the case. Knight and the stars had previously talked about stripping down the story, which Serkis expounded on for Rotten Tomatoes. When we say stripping down, it was more about not getting bogged down in the sort of tropes of a costume drama, Victorian drama, and allowing it to live afresh as a really contemporary piece of writing, he said. And therefore, and so, even though you re what you, of course, allowing the visuals, you do that work, you want to feel that the character is alive and very present and not sort of imagining what it might be like to have been alive in the 19th century. You re not doing that. You re actually saying these are people, people are people, and we still have the same issues, problems. We need to unpack the difficulties of the human condition in this, in a very modern way to make this story resonate with a fresh audience. 5. Serkis Costuming Challenge Continues Here Even If He s Not a CG-Enhanced Character(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Serkis, known especially for his CG-enhanced performances like Gollum and Caesar in the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises, faced a different sort of challenge here. [The costume] was so heavy. It was like going from the sublime to the ridiculous. I couldn t possibly have more makeup or costume to bear, but it was great, actually. It was nice to play a character in the flesh, and it was a particularly challenging character, not least because it was like sensory deprivation actually wearing this costume. I had long locks of hair and an additional beard. I had an eye that I couldn t see out of. I had scars all over my face. I had long nails, so once I got into costume, I was able to kind of get into the character and stay there. I had to. To compound his costuming issues, they filmed in summer. It was pretty brutal at times, Serkis said. I just had to at least take the hat off and get the top layer off as much as I could. But — actor problems. A Christmas Carol airs Thursday, December 19 at 7:30 on FX.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.
ptation of the sixth novel, Confess, Fletch, which Hamm is both starring in and producing. It also turns out that Confess, Fletch will be a Mad Men reunion project for Hamm, as he has cast John Slattery, who played Don Draper s boss and eventual partner Roger Sterling. Other Confess, Fletch co-stars will include Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan, and Annie Mummulo (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar).7. CHRIS PRATT TO STAR IN KARATE COMEDY THE BLACK BELT (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)For most of the last seven years since Chris Pratt scored two big hits in 2014 with The LEGO Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, his big screen output has focused on big franchise action movies like his various movies as Marvel s Star-Lord and the Jurassic World franchise. Pratt s first real big break, of course, was as the goofball Andy Dwyer on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, and it looks like he may channel the spirit of Andy again, as he will star in a karate-themed movie called The Black Belt for frequent Saturday Night Live sketch director Paul Briganti. Pratt will star in The Black Belt as an eccentric uncle who trains his shy teenage nephew in the ways of karate. The role of the nephew hasn t been cast yet.8. LANCE REDDICK TO REPRISE CONCIERGE ROLE IN JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (Photo by ©Summit Entertainment)When it comes to franchises with recurring casts, it s easy to take it for granted when it s announced that a particular actor is indeed returning for the next movie, but that doesn t mean it s not news. Prolific TV actor Lance Reddick (The Wire, Fringe, LOST) has been in every John Wick movie thus far as the mysterious Charon, the concierge of the Continental, where international assassins come to mingle and rest up, and he will do the same again in John Wick: Chapter 4. Reddick and star Keanu Reeves will be joined by a cast of new co-stars that includes Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, Hiroyuki Sanada, and pop star Rina Sawayama.9. COLD PURSUIT AND GREENLAND SEQUELS THAWING (Photo by ©STX Entertainment)Despite the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the movie business, two actors who showed they were still able to attract audiences (on some level) were Scotland s Gerard Butler (with Greenland, Certified Fresh at 78%) and Northern Ireland s Liam Neeson (with Honest Thief and The Ice Road). Just before COVID-19 struck, Neeson also starred in the action thriller Cold Pursuit (Fresh at 69%), and this week, the news broke that Studiocanal is moving forward with plans for a Cold Pursuit sequel (along with lots of other new projects announced at Cannes on Tuesday), which will presumably find Neeson s snowplow driver again in some sort of danger. Cold Pursuit 2 wasn t the only snow-themed sequel to make the news this week, as Greenland: Migration was confirmed to start filming in 2022, with Butler, Morena Baccarin, and director Ric Roman Waugh all returning for the sequel, which will focus on the family from the first film coping with life (spoiler) in the post-apocalyptic world following the events of Greenland. On an Apple device? 亚博网址进入 of any Crazy sequels in 2019 unlikely. Instead, the plan appears for both sequels to be filmed back-to-back, probably in 2020, for release dates in 2021 (and possibly 2022). The other challenge for an ambitious two-movie shoot (go ask Marvel) is getting all the cast scheduled, and Crazy Rich Asians had a large ensemble cast. As for what comes after In the Heights, China Rich Girlfriend, and Rich People Problems, Chu is also now developing Don t Stop Believin about Journey lead singer Arnel Pineda s unlikely route to a dream rock star gig.3. CAPTAIN MARVEL S BRIE LARSON AND HER NETFLIX MOVIE WITH CHARLIE KAUFMAN (Photo by Claire Folger/Paramount Pictures)Brie Larson was very much in the spotlight this week with the launch of the second trailer for next year s Captain Marvel (3/8/2019) (which has people asking all sorts of questions). As it often happens, however, there was actually another story about Larson s career this week, as she is the latest actor to sign on for an ambitious project at Netflix. Brie Larson has signed to star in I m Thinking of Ending Things, Netflix s first film with writer/director Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa, Synecdoche New York). Based on a 2016 novel by Iain Reid, I m Thinking of Ending Things tells the story of a woman s trip to a family farm that leads to an an unexpected detour leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty and sheer terror ensues. Jesse Plemons (of TV s Breaking Bad and Fargo) also signed on this week as the film s male lead. Going back to Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios also released the first teaser this week for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and we may be getting the first Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/5/2019) teaser this weekend (though how that fits in with Spidey s current status is still anyone s guess).4. I TONYA DIRECTOR TAPPED FOR ANOTHER MISUNDERSTOOD HEROINE: CRUELLA?(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)For the most part, Disney s remakes of their animated classics are pretty straightforward (Dumbo is Dumbo, The Lion King is The Lion King, etc.), but then you have a movie like Maleficent, which took Sleeping Beauty and told its villain s story instead. (Let s note real quick here that Maleficent II recently wrapped filming and it s scheduled for May 29, 2020.) Disney is going to do the same thing with their revisit to 101 Dalmatians by adapting it as Cruella, telling her origin story before she ever met all those black-and-white puppies. Emma Stone has been attached to play the young Cruella for a while, and this week, Disney found its director in the form of Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Lars and the Real Girl). Alex Timbers (of Amazon s Mozart of the Jungle) had been attached, but had to drop out due to scheduling issues. Cruella doesn t have a release date yet, but it s most likely aimed at either late 2020 or sometime in 2021. Disney s remake slate currently includes three confirmed for 2019 (Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King) and two for 2020 (Mulan, Maleficent II). Tom Hanks also started talking to Disney last week for Pinocchio, which is another possibility for 2020 or 2021.5. TIFFANY HADDISH AND AWKWAFINA MIGHT BE NEXT JUMP STREET COPS (Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures)One of the funniest parts of 22 Jump Street was actually the ending, which promised a long series of sequels with different themes starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum (Medical School, Foreign Exchange Students, Art School, etc). That was followed, for a while, by talk about Hill and Tatum starring in a 23 Jump Street which was also a new Men in Black movie, but those plans eventually fell apart, and Hill and Tatum are apparently done with the franchise now. Instead, in whatever form the third 21 Jump Street movie takes, the two cops-undercover-in-a-school will be women. Tiffany Haddish broke out after 2017 s Girls Trip, and Awkwafina co-starred this year in both Ocean s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. If deals go through the way Sony hopes, it will be Haddish and Awkwafina who star in the next 21 Jump Street movie. Since she s 39, you might think Tiffany Haddish would have a harder time passing as a student, and you would be right, as she s reportedly in talks to play a cop undercover as a teacher, a mom, or maybe even both. In related news, the Men in Black spinoff now has a title, Men in Black International, which brings to mind the long-running DC Comics series Justice League International. This week, we also got our first image of Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in character, complete with fancy guns and men in black suits.6. ANNE HATHAWAY MIGHT TELL YOU HOW TO GET TO SESAME STREET (Photo by Giles Keyte/Focus Features)Next year will mark five years since Muppets Most Wanted, and since then we haven t heard much about any new installments. Instead, the attention seems to be turning to Sesame Street, which continues to air on both PBS and HBO. Sesame Street is also sort of a thematic cousin of Mister Rogers Neighborhood, which was the subject of this year s hit documentary Won t You Be My Neighbor? So, the time might be right for a different kind of Sesame Street movie. Warner Bros. is reportedly hoping to sign Anne Hathaway to star in their new Sesame Street movie, which will also be a musical. Of particular interest is the name of Hathaway s character, which is Sally. Going all the way back to the original 1969 Sesame Street pilot episode, it was a little girl named Sally who Gordon Robinson first introduced to Sesame Street. (Anne Hathaway, born in 1982, is too young by about 15 years to have actually been in that 1969 episode.) Big Bird, Bert Ernie, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, The Count, Mister Snuffleupagus, and Zoe are all also likely to be in Sesame Street.Rotten Ideas3. THE MUSIC OF PRINCE TO INSPIRE A MAMMA MIA-STYLE MUSICAL (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)During his lifetime, Prince was famously super protective of both his music and legacy (Kevin Smith recounted his efforts to make a Prince documentary in An Evening with Kevin Smith). Since his death in 2016, the music of Prince has been in the public eye, including commercials and a recent all-Prince episode of Black-ish. Universal Pictures had success with the ABBA musical Mamma Mia (and to some lesser extent, it s sequel Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again), and now the studio is hoping to replicate that, but with the music of Prince. Universal has made a deal with Prince s estate for an original movie (ie, not a Purple Rain remake, for example) inspired by the songs of Prince. The reports about the movie specifically reference Mamma Mia!, so don t expect a Prince biopic, but a fictional story that just features the songs. In related news, Universal is also partnering with Issa Rae on a musical romance called Love in America. Considering Universal has had mixed success with Mamma Mia! (the first film was Rotten at 55%, while the second was Certified Fresh at 81%), and considering Prince s music is good enough to stand on its own, without shoehorning it into a made-up story, we aren t especially optimistic here. Maybe they ll prove us wrong.
As movie theaters remain closed and studios continue to shuffle their schedules around accordingly, events like San Diego Comic-Con and the Telluride Film Festival have likewise made adjustments to their normal operating protocol to highlight upcoming films and keep fans informed. On August 22, the good folks at Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment will join the fray with a 24-hour streaming event called DC FanDome, hoping to capture the attention stay-at-home audiences with exclusive previews of their upcoming films, TV series, games, and comics.Like Comic-Con@Home, DC FanDome will be entirely free and online, and it will be broadcast in nine languages, with panels packed with talent, exclusive sneak peeks, exciting announcements, and more, but it s going to be a little difficult to navigate if you don t know what you re looking for. With that in mind, here s what you ll need to know before you check out DC FanDome.8/19 UPDATE: DC Entertainment has just announced that the schedule has changed for DC FanDome, effectively splitting the event across two dates. The only known Skull cast member right now is Amber Midthunder (Legion, The Ice Road), who was reportedly cast as a Comanche warrior woman who is forced to fight a Predator.8. THE CHI STAR JOINS HOUSE PARTY REMAKE AFTER CAST SHAKEUP (Photo by Showtime)Hollywood s remake fever has nearly run out of ideal properties from the 1980s, so the trend is starting to move more and more towards revisiting the 1990s (and by the end of the 2020s, we ll probably start seeing lots of remakes from the 2000s). After several years of development, New Line Cinema is ready to start filming their remake of the 1990 Kid n Play comedy hit House Party. Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair from Doctor Who) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr (Bumblebee) had been cast in April, but Lendeborg reportedly recently dropped out to focus on his mental well-being. His role will instead go to Jacob Latimore of the Showtime series The Chi. The original House Party was an ensemble comedy, so this remake probably will be as well, but none of those roles have been announced yet.9. SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER BLACK WIDOW STREAMING STRATEGY(Photo by Marvel Studios)Walt Disney Pictures received criticism for their decision to stream Black Widow day-and-date with the theatrical release, which has resulted in s its international box office looking like it will to end up about where Scarlett Johansson s Lucy (3 million) did far below most MCU films. Johansson took on the issue directly this week by filing a lawsuit against Disney, accusing the studio over a breach of contract. Key to Johansson s suit is that her contract was based on bonuses from the box office performance of Black Widow, which the lawsuit alleges were significantly reduced because of the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+. Disney responded by calling the lawsuit sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johansson s agent replied to that as being a direct attack on her character. More reactions can be read here. What is unclear is how this lawsuit will impact Johansson s future dealings with both Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, where for example, she had just recently developing a movie project based on the Walt Disney Theme Parks attraction Tower of Terror. On an Apple device? She is chosen by Edgar to replace Translucent, but immediately challenges Homelander thanks to her ease with social media and her large following on those platforms.“In the age of social media we have a whole new group of celebrities; this whole group of people who are successful on the internet. She is one of those people,” Cash said during the recent livestream. But considering she is one of The Seven, it is unlikely she will use her influence for any sort of good.“I’m such a bad guy that there will be questions coming my way,” she added. “Right now, I’m just reading history books.”Other new additions include Goran Visnjic as Alistair Adana, another church leader with a tenuous grip on the faith, and Claudia Doumit as congresswoman Victoria Neuman. And while Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) isn’t exactly a new character, he will have a lot more to do in the second season. During an appearance at C2E2 in February, Starr told an audience of fans, “I think they probably wrote to him the strongest in season 2 in my opinion. Black Noir is like a f king force in season 2.” Setting him against the Boys will no doubt result in plenty of the blood-splatter we saw in the trailer. Also, as readers of the comic book will know, Black Noir’s true identity is one of the comic’s big reveals and may yet become a plot point on the television show. When Will It Run?(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)The new season will debut on September 4. But in a twist on Amazon’s usual model, not all of the episodes will be available that day. Instead, fans can binge the first three episodes of season 2, then come back each week for the remaining five episodes through October 9. As Kripke explained during the livestream, “We decided there’s so much crazy sh this season that we want the audience to absorb it and recover.”We also think the sustained social media conversation about The Mandalorian during its weekly first-season run may have also had a hand in the change. Will There Be More Boys? After it was revealed that a season 2 episode title utilizes the name of the comic’s final major storyline, “The Bloody Doors Off,” some fans were afraid that two seasons were all we were ever going to get. But during the show s Comic-Con@Home panel on July 23, producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg announced that the series had already been picked up for a third season. Of course, things are a little up in the air right now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Rogen quipped, When can we film season 3? Anyone’s guess! Hope sometime this decade. Thanks to the original comic book series, there are plenty of stories to draw from, to say nothing of the show’s departures from those tales creating more stories of their own. The show has legs and may be with us for some time yet.
