The cast includes Westworld s James Marsden as working-class factory man Stu Redman, Aquaman s Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as the young, pregnant Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as the deaf and mute newfound leader Nick Andros. The series takes place a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague where the forces of good and evil, and the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man, per the official description. The Stand’s previous adaptations include a 1994 miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe and a 2008 Marvel comic series. The Man Who Fell to Earth Series in the Works From Star Trek: Discovery Producers(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The Man Who Fell to Earth is turning into a TV series. Based on the novel of the same name and the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series will follow an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future, per the official announcement.“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet said in a statement. Kurtzman and Lumet are both producers on CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery.Marvel s Runaways Meet Cloak DaggerMarvel s teen superhero shows are staging a crossover: In the upcoming third season of the Hulu drama Runaways, the main characters from the Freeform drama Cloak Dagger will meet up with the titular teen superhero team. Details about the story line have not yet been revealed.“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at,” said Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb in a statement announcing the news.Season 3 of Runaways premieres all 10 episodes December 13 on Hulu.Evil Is More Than an Exorcism of the Week The CBS drama Evil, which follows a psychologist, a priest-in-training, and a carpenter who investigate the backlog of unexplained mysteries in the Catholic church, is — as seen in the trailer above — much scarier than any series the network has aired before. But just because it s a procedural doesn t mean the series will feel the same from week to week. We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week, co-creator Robert King told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen — a school where all the girls at the school start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. I would say the other thing is you’re looking at life and you’re seeing evil, not with a capital E but with a small e — the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in? So that is really what our people are [doing]: Just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural? But also looking at hope. (Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)It was no secret that The Abomination/Emil Blonsky would be re-entering the MCU in phase 4; during last December s Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that the villain, first portrayed by Tim Roth in The Incredible Hulk, would be a part of upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk. Roth further confirmed the news. But it turns out we will see The Abomination even sooner than that – and we just got the confirmation from Feige himself.Check out: Kevin Feige s Oral History of the MCU s First Three PhasesWhen the studio dropped its trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings last Friday, keen-eyed fans noticed that the character – or a creature that looked almost exactly like him, with a few improvements like those larger fins along his spine – appeared in the last few seconds, fighting in what looks to be an underground tournament. His adversary? Well, it looked more than a little like Wong (Benedict Wong), the sorcerer first introduced in Doctor Strange. But Wong, the actor, was not officially credited in the Shang-Chi cast list (though a lunch in Sydney between the star and Shang-Chi lead Simu Liu had raised some suspicions).Rotten Tomatoes sat down with Feige this week for an extended look at Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the full video of which will be available shortly in the lead-up to Black Widow s release. When we asked for confirmation that we had indeed seen The Abomination squaring off against Wong in the closing moments of the Shang-Chi trailer, Feige revealed that our eyes were not deceiving us. Yes, we just recently released the final trailer for Shang-Chi, said Feige. Some fans said, This looks like a character they hadn t seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong. Feige went on to say that the ability to bring back characters like The Abomination is one of the joys of his work on the MCU. [It s] a fun thing to have a character that we haven t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU. And to see fans on that little tag of the trailer recognize that and embrace that is great fun. (Photo by Jasin Boland, © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Shang-Chi also affords Marvel Studios a second go, of sorts, at another storied villain: The Mandarin. In the comics, the character, which was teased in Iron Man 3 but who, in that film, turned out to be bumbling actor-for-hire Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) – much to some fans chagrin – is the founder of the Ten Rings, and the Ten Rings will make a proper debut in the upcoming solo film. That s what s fun about the MCU at this stage, Feige told Rotten Tomatoes. We can do something like Shang-Chi, introducing a brand new hero into the MCU and into the world at large. But that subtitle, The Legend of the Ten Rings, actually connects it back to the very beginning of the MCU, the Ten Rings being the organization that kidnapped Tony Stark at the very beginning of Iron Man one. And that organization was inspired by a character called the Mandarin in the comics. And going back to Iron Man one: We ve been talking about that when we do bring this character to the screen, [we] only wanted to do it when we felt we could do it supreme justice and really showcase the complexity of this character, which frankly we couldn t do in an Iron Man movie because an Iron Man movie is about Iron Man; an Iron Man movie is about Tony Stark. So [Iron Man 3 director] Shane Black, in his film and his script that he co-wrote, came up with this fun twist that we love to this day, and it turned out to be Trevor Slattery. Just because that version wasn t real didn t mean there s not a leader of the Ten Rings organization, and that is who we meet for the first time in Shang-Chi. Joel MearesFeige says he is particularly excited to have cast Hong Kong acting legend Tony Leung Chiu-wai in the role. Tony Leung playing Shang-Chi s father and the leader of the Ten Rings is another pinch-yourself, dream-come-true moment because he s one of the best actors of our time and we re very excited to have him introduced to, I hope, a whole new fan base who might not be aware of his spectacular work that he s done. Check in with Rotten Tomatoes for our full extended video interview with Kevin Feige previewing Phase 4 of the MCU. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters September 3, 2021. She-Hulk is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2022. Thumbnail image: © Marvel Studios and © UniversalOn an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
Want to know if your favorite television series is among the latest cancelled TV shows? Bookmark this page to learn about Netflix cancelled shows, when network series get the axe, and which cable TV limited series are being reworked as anthologies to squeeze every single drop of fan love out of them. How it works: Renewals are obvious: new season = yay! When a network or streaming service announces that they re not making another season of a show, however, we count that as cancelled (or canceled if you spell it without SEO considerations). Sure, some shows come to a natural end, but someone somewhere said enough, and to avoid endless discussions about whether a title was cancelled or retired — One Day at a Time and Marvel’s Helstrom were cancelled, but His Dark Materials will come to a natural conclusion — we re going with the one designation. Feel free to debate specific titles in the comments if you wish. But first: learn which series will live on, which were renewed and then cancelled (thanks, COVID-19), and which have simply reached their expiration date.
Like many who have come before her, director Melina Matsoukas began her career behind the camera in the music world, crafting award-winning videos for the likes of Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, before she went on to helm episodes of critically acclaimed TV series Insecure and Master of None. It was on the latter that she first worked alongside Lena Waithe, most notably on a pivotal Thanksgiving episode centered on Waithe s character, Denise. The two of them reunite for this week s Queen Slim, Matsoukas feature directorial debut and Waithe s feature writing debut, and critics are calling their new collaboration a success. Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith star as the titular duo, a young Black couple on a first date who are pulled over by a cop presumably for a routine traffic stop. The situation escalates quickly and erupts into violence, and when the cop ends up dead, Queen and Slim flee the scene and become heralded as a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde when video of the incident goes viral. Critics say Queen Slim is a provocative examination of timely issues that tackles its potentially thorny themes thoughtfully, but also roots them in a gripping drama bolstered by powerful performances from its two leads. It may not necessarily be an ideal post-turkey pick-me-up, but it should be rewarding to viewers willing to engage with it.
跳棋下载 (Photo by Photo By: Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Updated March 10, 2020Netflix announced its first planned series with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland in 2018. In fact, there was so much drama and scintillating programming on the original development slate from the Scandal alums that Rhimes said in a statement then that this is Shondaland 2.0. So, what exactly, does Shondaland 2.0 look like? The first of these shows is supposed to hit Netflix in 2020, which means we ll be updating this list as more news becomes available.Inventing Anna Will Star Ozark Emmy-Winner Julia GarnerRhimes is creating and exec-producing Inventing Anna based on the New York magazine story about con artist Anna Delvey.Remember that viral story about a young and posh 20-something who duped Manhattan’s elite (even one Vanity Fair staffer) into believing she was an heiress? Well, according to the press release, Rhimes is going to make us wonder again if “she[’s] the stuff American dreams are made of or is she New York s biggest con woman?” and “is it a con if you enjoy being taken?” It was later announced that the series would be called Inventing Anna. It will star Ozark Emmy winner Julia Garner as the titular troublemaker and Veep’s Anna Chlumsky as a reporter with a lot to prove who becomes embroiled in her web. The cast also includes Jennifer Esposito, Laverne Cox, and Scandal s Katie Lowes and Jeff Perry. The New York article mentioned Delvey’s penchant for shopping fancy designers like Acne and Rick Owens, so it s also exciting that Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo is credited on this series too.Bridgerton, Where Gossip Girl and Downton Abbey Meet? One of the first Shondland-Netflix collabs to hit the streaming site will be Bridgerton, a scripted soap set in the high society of Regency London, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It will be narrated by none other than Julie Andrews as the unseen gossip writer Lady Whistledown, while For the People’s Regé-Jean Page plays a duke who has his pick of the ladies, and Younger’s Phoebe Dynevor will play debutant Daphne Bridgerton. The series is described as a “smart, feminist take on Regency England romance [that] unveils the glittering, wealthy, sexual, painful, funny, and sometimes lonely lives of the women and men in London s high society marriage mart.” Chris Van Dusen, who is an alum of the Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal writers’ rooms — and therefore knows a ton about steamy trysts — is adapting author Julia Quinn’s best-selling book series.Anna Deavere Smith Adapts The Warmth of Other Suns(Photo by Photo By: Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Esteemed playwright Anna Deavere Smith is making a TV show based on the Great Migration. Smith, who also appeared in Shondaland’s ABC drama For the People, is adapting author Isabel Wilkerson’s best-selling historical non-fiction The Warmth of Other Suns into a series that the press release promises will track “the decades-long migration of African-Americans fleeing the Jim Crow South in search of a better life in the North and the West between 1916 and 1970.”Smith will also appear in Rhimes Inventing Anna.California-Set Historical Drama PlannedMad Men and Gilmore Girls alum Janet Leahy is creating a series currently titled Pico Sepulveda, which is set in the 1840s when the state we now associate with Silicon Valley, Hollywood, and the beach was then part of Mexico. The press release says it will follow “the end of an idyllic era there as American forces threaten brutality and war at the border to claim this breathtaking land for its own” and sounds like an excellent companion for those who enjoyed the Netflix miniseries Godless, which has an 89% Fresh Tomatometer score. There’s also a dark comedy set at a summer camp.(Photo by Photo By: Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Writer-actress Jill Alexander — you may remember her as the oft-fired Hooli staffer Patrice from HBO’s Silicon Valley — is creating this half-hour series, titled Sunshine Scouts. The plot sounds ideal for anyone who enjoys Netflix’s teen-focused dark comedies like I Am Not Okay With This (85% on the Tomatometer): “An apocalyptic disaster spares a rag-tag group of teenage girls at sleep-away camp who must then summon their moxie and survival skills to weather the fallout and ensure all that remains of humanity abides by the Sunshine Scout Law.”Shondaland to Adapt Ellen Pao’s Silicon Valley–Set Tell-AllNetflix and Shondaland have acquired the rights to Ellen Pao’s groundbreaking memoir. Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change details the former Reddit interim CEO s life and career, including the lawsuit she brought against her former employer Kleiner Perkins that triggered lasting media attention to sexism in Silicon Valley and foreshadowed the Time’s Up movement (in which Rhimes and Beers have both been active). Netflix has yet to announce a head writer or an official title.Scandal Is Over, but Shondaland Hasn’t Left WashingtonAlso on the docket for an adaptation: Kate Andersen Brower’s non-fiction book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House. While a head writer has not been named and the series does not have an official title, we are told that the series will follow in the footsteps of Brower’s book and give an “accurate insider’s account of White House residence staffers and the upstairs downstairs lives they share with the First Families at one of the most famous homes in history.”Shondaland Fave Debbie Allen Featured in Dance Doc(Photo by ©MGM/Courtesy Everett Collection)Tentatively titled Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, this documentary will go behind the scenes of the Grey’s Anatomy star’s (and frequent Shondaland series director) infamous Debbie Allen Dance Academy as they reimagine the classic ballet The Nutcracker with an inclusive cast and a blend of dance traditions. Oliver Bokelberg, who was the directing producer on Scandal, will serve as director, cinematographer, and producer.Pucker Up to Netflix Anthology Series Notes on LoveShondaland continues to add to its development slate, which now includes the anthology series Notes on Love. Announced in 2019, this episodic anthology series will explore the “unexpected, life-changing, euphoric, hilarious, surreal, and all-consuming places where love intersects with our lives,” Variety reports. The first season, which will focus on marriage, includes episodes penned by Rhimes, Norman Lear and Aaron Shure, Steve Martin, Diane Warren, To All the Boys author Jenny Han, and Shrill author Lindy West and her husband, Ahamefule J. Oluo.
