4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Listen, we get it: This is the time of year that you want to be soaking up some sunshine and staying away from the various screens in your life. But with a crop of 13 certified fresh returning series like this, how can you resist!?Fear the Walking Dead 75% (AMC)What it is: An extension of the zombie apocalypse world of AMC mega-hit The Walking Dead that takes place in Los Angeles before the events of its mothership series and shows how city dwellers deal with the virus outbreak. Why you should watch it: It comes as little surprise that if you love The Walking Dead, you’ll love Fear. Its engrossing backdrop and cast of memorable characters is enough to tune in week to week, even through some of its more languid, slow-boiled pacing. Season 5 premieres June 2 on AMC. Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 40 hours (for the first four seasons)Luther 88% (BBC America)What it is: This BBC drama follows a brilliant Detective Chief Inspector (Idris Elba) who finds it difficult to strike a work-life balance as he struggles to toe the line between genius and madness. Why you should watch it: Elba is a four-time Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner for his spellbinding performance as DCI Luther, a magnetic cross between Sherlock Holmes and Columbo, in this gritty character study that adds a new dimension to the cop show genre. Season 5 premieres June 2 on BBC America.Where to watch it: Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 17 hours (for the first four seasons)Black Mirror 84% (Netflix)What it is: Basing its title on the black, reflective screen of a powered-off phone, tablet, or computer, this hit anthological Channel 4-turned-Netflix series from creator Charlie Brooker examines mankind’s dark, twisted (and thankfully, for now, hypothetical) future when beholden to modern technology. Why you should watch it: Few other sci-fi series today have proven as prescient on technology, sociology, and politics as Black Mirror, and it just keeps getting better. Plus, the Emmy-winning series has helped launch the careers of U.K. talent like Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Alex Lawther, Hayley Atwell, Domhnall Gleeson, and many others.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 20 hours (for the first four seasons)The Handmaid's Tale 83% (Hulu)What it is: Set in a not-too-distant future and adapted from Margaret Atwood’s acclaimed novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale is the harrowing imagining of a society where fertile women are forced into slavery to help procreate for the rich and powerful. A gripping and prescient look at modern patriarchy’s darkest corners (and possible futures), it truly is must-watch TV.Why you should watch it: Last year, The Handmaid’s Tale became the first-ever streaming series to take home the Television Academy’s top honor: the Emmy for best drama. We’d follow its formidable cast — Elisabeth Moss, Ann Dowd, Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, and Samira Wiley among them — and behind-the-camera creatives anywhere, maybe even to Gilead. Season 3 premieres on Hulu June 5. Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 19 hours (for the first two seasons)Designated Survivor 71% (Netflix)What it is: David Guggenheim’s political thriller imagines what would happen if an entire presidential administration was killed in one fell swoop and the low-ranking cabinet member tapped as designated survivor (a true-life position here played by Kiefer Sutherland) was sworn in as leader of the free world. Why you should watch it: This network drama-turned-Netflix reboot marks a welcomed return to TV for Sutherland, who, as the titular survivor Tom Kirkman, holds no prisoners as a man between a rock and hard place. Paired with crackling scripts and an excellent ensemble, Designated Survivor is a mile-a-minute thrill-ride and a worthy follow-up to 24. Season 3 premieres on Netflix June 7.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 30 hours (for the first two seasons)Big Little Lies 89% (HBO)What it is: From creator David E. Kelley and based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies is an murder mystery of intertwined upper-class mothers living in Monterey, California. Why you should watch it: Big Little Lies is one of the buzziest ensemble dramas on TV today, and that’s thanks in large part to its stacked cast of A-list stars and producers: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz — and, in an twist that just about broke the internet, Meryl Streep is co-starring in the new episodes as a woman whose arrival in the rich seaside town of Monterrey causes trouble for the main women. Season 2 returns by popular demand on HBO June 9.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, HBO Now, VuduCommitment: Approx. 7 hours (for the first season)Claws 90% (TNT)What it is: Niecy Nash stars as Desna Simms, the takes-no-prisoners owner of  a nail salon in the swampy town of Manatee County, Florida. She’s flanked by a scene-stealing assortment of coworkers and patrons. The drama flares, however, when she and her employees turn to organized crime and start laundering money. Why you should watch it: Full of camp, high-stakes crime drama, and firecracker scripts with performances to match, Claws is some of the most fun you’ll have with a TV series this summer. Plus we’ll take any excuse to see two-time Emmy nominee Nash execute her perfect blend of humor, brawn, and heart as the leading lady. Season 3 premieres June 9.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first two seasons)Pose 98% (FX)What it is: From creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals, Pose depicts New York City’s ballroom and voguing scene of the 1980s with sickening pageantry, tea-spilling drama, and high fashions for the gods. Why you should watch it: Pose made waves upon its premiere by being the largest ever ensemble cast of transgender actors playing trans characters on TV. But aside from its progressive stamp of approval for onscreen representation, it’s also just damn good TV, expertly acted, written, and directed, and unafraid to tackle LGBTQ+ issues that we’ve never seen explored in such a way before. Season 2 premieres on FX June 11.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6 hours (for the first season)Queen Sugar 98% (OWN)What it is: After the unexpected death of their father, estranged siblings Ralph-Angel (a conman fresh out of prison), Nova Bordelon (a New Orleans–based journalist and activist), and Charley Bordelon (an upper-class Los Angeles mother to a teenage son) move to rural Louisiana to claim their inheritance: hundreds of acres of sugarcane farmland. Why you should watch it: Queen Sugar is the result of women both behind and in front of the camera joining their powers: executive producer Oprah Winfrey; executive producer, director, and writer Ava DuVernay; stars Rutina Wesley and Dawn-Lyen Gardner; and other female directors for each episode of its three seasons. And their work isn’t the only stunning aspect of the series — sprawling locations under the Louisiana sun and timely discussions of racial prejudice, mass incarceration, and more make it a thought-provoking family drama. Season 4 premieres on OWN June 12.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 32.5 hours (for the first three seasons)Younger 98% (TV Land)What it is: Sex and the City helmer Darren Star strikes gold again for city-dwelling women of a certain age with Younger, starring theater vet and now small-screen charmer Sutton Foster as a single mother who lies about her age to pursue her dreams in publishing. Why you should watch it: Foster is absolutely pitch-perfect in this fun, sexy, metropolitan comedy, and she’s matched by a bevy of scene-stealing co-stars: Miriam Shor, Hilary Duff, Nico Tortorella, and Debi Mazar, who are all stellar. Season 6 premieres on TV Land June 12.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: About 25 hours (for the first five seasons)Marvel - Jessica Jones 82% (Netflix)What it is: Private detective/hard-drinking superhero Jessica Jones overcomes abuse and reluctantly helps save the residents of New York City in the final season of Netflix s Marvel propjects. Why you should watch it: Krysten Ritter is sublime as the jeans-and-leather jacket-wearing titular superhero, and her nuanced performance is vital to the portrayal of abuse on screen. Plus, the supporting cast — led by Rachael Taylor and Carrie-Ann Moss, plus David Tennant as the insidious first-season villain Kilgrave — is second to none.  Season 3 premieres on Netflix June 14.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 17.5 hours (for the first two seasons)The Detour 90% (TBS)What it is: The Detour follows the Parker family as they embark on a roadtrip from their Syracuse, New York home to Florida for a family vacation. Why you should watch it: As its title would indicate, not everything goes to plan in this well-meaning family road trip, and missteps and mishaps abound. Created by husband-wife duo Samantha Bee and Jason Jones (who stars as the central father with Natalie Zea, Ashley Gerasimovich, and Liam Carroll), the scripts are funny and heartfelt while still leaving room for some unexpected run-ins with the law and other twists. Season 4 premieres on TBS June 18.Where to watch: Amazon, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 11 hours (for the first three seasons)Dark 95% (Netflix)What it is: This foreign-language streaming series from creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friesehildren combines elements of time travel sci-fi, horror, and family drama to tell the story of the fictional German town of Winden; its children are inexplicably disappearing, leaving residents in varied states of emotional disarray. Why you should watch it: Netflix’s first German-language original series is a doozy: spine-tinglingly eerie, fantastical, and at times downright terrifying, it’s a must-watch for any fans of the genre. Season 2 premieres on Netflix June 21.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 8.5 hours (for the first season)Legion 91% (FX)What it is: While Legion is among the most original—and undefinable—series on TV today, in the simplest of terms, it’s the story of psych-ward patient David Haller (Dan Stevens) and his sidekick-turned-nemesis Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) as David more fully becomes what he’s always known himself to be: a mutant. Why you should watch it: To anyone who says they’re tiring of the superhero genre overtaking film and TV, we say, “Have you seen Legion?” Noah Hawley’s absolutely singular X-Men–based vision is a mind-bending and engrossing head-scratcher that’s well worth committing to. And committing is exactly what Stevens and Plaza do with their no-holds-barred, fearless performances. Season 3, its final season, premieres on FX June 24.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first two seasons)Like this? (Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)There is a big difference between scary kids movies, and kids movies that just happen to scare kids. We wrote about the latter just last month, as we explored animated movies that weren t necessarily intended to be horror pieces, but still managed to traumatize young viewers. But the former, the kids movies that are actually meant to be scary, are quite a special thing. The 80s and early 90s gave us plenty of darker movies for kids that managed to be creepy enough to scare the young audience – and frankly, many of the adults who were sitting with them – but still provided enough wonder and entertainment for those kids to return to the films again and again. Just to be terrorized once more.Among these darker films, there is one that stands above the rest: the Nicolas Roeg adaptation of Roald Dahl s The Witches. The story of an orphan and his grandmother who happen upon a convention of witches at a seaside hotel – and the beginnings of a scheme to rid the world of children – landed in U.S. theaters in August of 1990, and was immediately heralded as a groundbreaking entry in the canon of dark kids movies. With grotesque makeup courtesy of Jim Henson s team, a chillingly memorable Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, and Dahl s ceaselessly dark story, it would become a VHS favorite for more adventurous children. (A remake, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway, is due in theaters in 2021.)To mark the 30th anniversary of the terrifying, hilarious, and unforgettable original, we re going to avoid eating the soup and explore why this is the scariest kids film ever made. Period.Forget Scream: This is the Opening 10 Minutes That Still Keeps Us Up At Night Plenty of horror movies, both for kids and adults, take their sweet time getting to the good stuff. Thankfully, The Witches wastes nary a minute, opening with evil witches, a terrifying short story, and establishing its lore as grandma Helga (Mai Zetterling) explains to Luke (Jasen Fisher) her hatred for the story s vicious child-killing witches and how to spot them. Right out of the gate, the film taps directly into the Stranger Danger panic of the 80s, as Helga says,  You can never be sure if it s a witch you are looking at or a kind lady. Then shit gets really creepy. As Helga explains how to spot a witch – no toes, purple tinge to their eyes – she tells the story of how her childhood friend Erica became a victim to the witch that lived next door. The way the film frames Erica s disappearing in a laneway, kidnapped by the friendly neighbor, is enough to send chills down both kids and adults spines. But then Helga reveals that a few weeks after the kidnapping, she noticed a strange little girl in the painting Erica s dad bought the day she went missing. Turns out, Erica is trapped within the painting, cursed to live her life in a 2-D space, growing old until one day she disappears. (Find us a 90s kid who doesn t remember the haunting image of Erica in that) painting. In just 10 minutes, the movie mixes the fantastical concept of witches with the real fear of child abduction, and shatters our view of a group that we re traditionally taught to see as safe — the nice old lady across the street who gives you candy and pinches your cheek. Then, to cap things off, Luke s parents die.The Director Is A Horror Genius And Doesn t Hold Back Despite his reputation as a children s author, Dahl writes plenty of disturbing imagery into his work. While many directors adapting his stories play down that aspect of the material — think Matilda, The BFG — the director of one of the best and most adult horror films ever made, Don t Look Now, was determined to bring the cruelty and ugliness that The Witches required.Having Nicolas Roeg direct a kids movie certainly was an odd choice, on the surface, given the director s reputation for thrillers with plenty of sex appeal. And yet, Roeg manages to perfectly translate the unpleasantness of the titular witches to the big screen, and create a sense of unease throughout. Watch as he uses extreme close-ups and Dutch angles to give the entire film an unsettling vibe. This is particularly effective when Huston s Grand High Witch pushes a baby carriage towards a cliff s edge and a chase to save it unfolds; the scene is already shocking by its nature, but Roeg treats it with the same seriousness as he did his nightmarish, lost-in-Venice scenes in Don t Look Now, turning it into an unspeakable act of unfathomable sadism.Roeg has admitted that he accidentally let his son watch the dailies, which helped him realize what scenes were too terrifying for the final film.Roald Dahl Knew How to Exploit Kids  Worst FearsOf course, the film wouldn t have been possible without the bizarreness and horror of Dahl s original story. Though we mostly remember him for his classic works of children s fiction like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda, Dahl was not a stranger to horror. The author even hosted a pre-Twilight Zone sci-fi and horror anthology series called Way Out for CBS, and he always knew how to be scary without crossing a line, but also without ever talking down to his audience. In The Witches, Dahl explores that period in which kids start to realize the world may not be as safe or as bright as their parents made them believe. First, he does it by turning the nice old lady into a vicious monster, allowing Roeg to force us to look with suspicion at every character who enters the frame and sow distrust with every purple glint in a hotel worker s eye. Then, Dahl pulls a reverse Willy Wonka, using the chocolate bar as a poisonous weapon that threatens to turn every kid in England into a mouse. In Dahl s world, as faithfully rendered by Roeg – until the tacked-on happy ending at least – nothing is safe.Jim Henson s Grotesque Witch Makeup Caused Us All Kinds Of Nightmares(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)If there is one defining image of The Witches, it s the unmasking of Huston s Grand High Witch as she delivers her keynote address at the convention. After the stylish woman in that lush purple-lined cape walks onto the stage to the applause of her adoring fellow witches, she removes her wig to reveal a bald head — which we already knew to expect thanks to Helga s warnings. But then she goes a step further, removing her face mask to reveal a gnarly monster that seems part Skeksis, part Freddy Krueger. It s incredible work by Jim Henson s Creature Shop, and a far cry from either Kermit or even most of the creatures they conjured up for Labyrinth. The Grand High Witch is a masterpiece of horror makeup, and Henson s team dive fully into the ugliness and gnarly-ness of the look, which reportedly took several hours to put on and then even more hours to remove. There is more incredible work, too, as children and witches are transformed into mice, but it s Huston s transformation that sticks in the memory. The moment the witch removes her face is the moment the film affirms what it has so far only hinted at: behind the gentle smiles hide heinous monsters ready to devour you.Anjelica Huston Delivers One of the Great Horror Movie PerformancesIt s one thing to have a villain who looks the part, but The Witches only remains as memorable as it does because its villain also acts the part. Even before her nightmare-inducing transformation, Huston is an enthralling menace, vamping it up – what even is that accent – as she sashays flirtatiously one minute, and stares down and terrorizes the next. The Oscar-winner sells a completely different attitude than any other witch in the film. Instead of warm, gentle, and easy to approach, Huston s Grand High Witch exudes sex appeal, talks with a cold and detached voice that shows she knows she s more powerful than everyone in the room – she s Miranda Priestly, with certain unsavory appetites – and then writhes with pleasure when she s about to demonstrate her child-killing abilities. The film is constantly warning us against strangers, especially those who approach us with faked kindness, but Huston s Grand High Witch doesn t need to fake anything.  She is a repugnant and vile monster, and yet we – and seemingly every man who encounters her in the film – are drawn to her, almost admiring her for daring to be herself: a true witch, mask on or off.The Witches was released in U.S. theaters on August 24, 1990. It is available to stream on Netflix, and to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon Prime, and iTunes.
A Valentine s Day Trailer Indicates the Knightmare Matters(Photo by HBO Max)On February 14th, HBO Max released a new trailer for the film featuring a number of the teased images released over the last few months, a couple of classic shots from the extant film, and a handful of new, apocalyptic moments. Perhaps the most surprising element of the Valentine’s Day trailer is the way it reframes the so-called Knightmare from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As Bruce himself explains in the trailer, he had a vision of a broken future world in which Superman enforced a dark agenda. It appears an extended version of the Knightmare will be key to Snyder’s version of Justice League as Bruce goes on to suggest it is the world all the characters will face if they fail to stop Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds). As it happens, the trailer also seems to recast Steppenwolf’s mission in a clearer way by having him discuss the potential fall of Earth with Darkseid (Ray Porter) and other New Gods like DeSaad (Peter Guinness) and Granny Goodness. At the same time, it gives Bruce a clearer motivation to assemble the League.Other things teased in the trailer include a scene between Barry Allen and his father Henry (Billy Crudup), the Flash rescuing Iris West (Kiersey Clemons in what may be her only ever appearance as Iris), Steppenwolf’s battle with the Amazons, and a confrontation – if only inside the Knightmare – between the Batman and the Joker.Jared Leto s Joker Will Make an AppearanceRyan FujitaniOn October 21, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Snyder Cut would feature a return of the Joker as portrayed by Jared Leto in 2016 s Suicide Squad. It was a surprising announcement because Leto s Joker was nowhere to be found in the theatrical cut of Justice League, and Leto specifically had to be called in to shoot new scenes that Snyder had originally envisioned for the film. Then, in February, we got our first official images of Leto in character, courtesy of Zack Snyder and an article in Vanity Fair. The images reveal a very different Joker from the one Leto portrayed in Suicide Squad; depicted in black and white, his hair is longer and disheveled, his prominent tattoos are gone, and he s clothed in gloves and a hospital gown, with a surgical mask dangling from his neck. The piece goes on to explain that  beware of spoilers here  this Joker appears in Snyder s film in a dream sequence experienced by Ben Affleck s Bruce Wayne, revealing the destruction that will take place if the titular heroes are unsuccessful. Beyond that, we don t really know what this might mean for Leto s future as the character, being that we ve already gotten another iteration of the Joker in Joaquin Phoenix s Oscar-winning turn in 2019 s Joker, and we re also getting another, separate iteration of Batman in The Batman, due out next year. The Snyder Cut Will Tell More of Cyborg and Flash s Stories, And Focus on Mega Villain DarkSeid (Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros.)After an online screening of Man of Steel on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, Zack Snyder announced that the Snyder Cut of Justice League is indeed real, and that it would be debuting on the upcoming new streaming service HBO Max sometime in 2021. Snyder reiterated that he has yet to watch the theatrical version of the film, which was completed by Joss Whedon when Snyder stepped away from the film due to a personal tragedy (more on that below), and further stated that what audiences saw was probably one-fourth of what I did.  Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Snyder said that It will be an entirely new thing, and, especially talking to those who have seen the released movie, a new experience apart from that movie. Fans got their first real look at the other three-fourths of Snyder s vision when a new trailer for Zack Snyder s Justice League premiered at online convention DC FanDome in August 2020. Set to Leonard Cohen s Hallelujah – a song Snyder used in his Watchmen film – the trailer revealed a few things, among them:Legendary DC big bad Darkseid will indeed be the main focus when it comes to villains. We see him at the opening of the teaser and throughout. We will see Superman in his dark, black and silver suit (more on that below). We will get more of Victor Stone s (Ray Fisher) backstory, and this version of Justice League will feature Iris West, the Flash s love interest, who was cut from the original theatrical release. We will get a lot more set up of Jason Momoa s Aquaman character. We will see the Hall of Justice completely devastated.Zack Snyder has made good on his promise to change the color of the much-derided orange/red sky that features in the finale.Batman gets a rousing moment that he did not in the original, telling the Justice League crew at the end of the trailer, I don t care how many demons he s fought in how many hells. He s never fought us. Not us united. Before revealing the teaser trailer, Snyder told viewers that compared to the original theatrically released Justice League, fans can expect to see tons more of the flash, including a scene that will show an ability we ve not yet seen on screen, and a little bit more of his emotional arc. DarkSeid is coming to #TheSnyderCut of #JusticeLeague pic.twitter.com/IpogVAvCQC Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) August 22, 2020Snyder also said that after so much of Victor Stone story was sacrificed in the first version of the film – including the aforementioned character of Iris West – his cut would center Cyborg. “Cyborg is the heart of the movie, Snyder said. Cyborg is the thing that I think in the end holds the team together in a lot of ways.”The Snyder Cut Will Debut on HBO Max in March of 2021We previously knew the director s cut of Justice League would release on HBO Max in 2021, but on January 29, in an email release of three new posters for the project, we got the official premiere date: March 18, 2021. After Zack Snyder responded to a fan question on the social networking site Vero implying that the Snyder Cut will not, as initially announced, be a four-part miniseries but instead a one shot single film, we also learned via a press release that this is indeed the case, and it will be presented as a single four-hour film. Snyder also previously said that international fans worried they would not get the Snyder Cut because HBO Max is only available in the U.S. should not fear: distribution deals are being worked on.Another interesting development is that Zack Snyder s Justice League will be presented in a different aspect ratio to the original film. The Snyder Cut will be available in the 1.66.1 ratio, known widely as European widescreen, which will result in viewers seeing black bars on either side of the image when they watch on HBO Max.We Will See Superman In the Black Suit Snyder Always WantedAt fan event Justice Con in late July, Snyder dropped some big Justice League news. First up, he revealed that the world would get its first look at his cut of Justice League with a teaser that will drop at DC FanDome; then he threw red meat to the fans by showing a tiny bit of footage that revealed Henry Cavill s Superman in a black suit in a deleted Justice League scene in which he flies to Bruce Wayne s hideout and runs into Alfred. You may recognize the deleted scene from Justice League s home release, but in that available scene the suit is still the usual red.And fans were treated to the scene in un-cropped IMAX formatting, which is the format in which the entire Snyder cut will be released. The story goes that Snyder always wanted Cavill s Superman to don the black suit but that Warner Bros. felt it was too dark a turn for the Man of Steel s character. The latest teaser revealed at DC FanDome confirmed we d be getting the dark Super suit. For more information, let’s go back a few years to uncover the history of the Snyder Cut and how we speculated it might have been possible back in November.Justice League Was Initially Two F

(Photo by Courtesy of A24)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: YOUN YUH-JUNG Unbothered might be the best word to describe Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung s attitude towards her first major American awards campaign. When we chatted with the veteran star, who is Oscar-nominated for her turn as an unconventional and hilarious grandmother in writer/director Lee Issac Chung s Minari, she seemed pleased but mostly unaffected by the Hollywood hype around the film her recent accolades, which total more than 50 awards for her supporting performance.  To tell you the truth, it s not that [different], she said during an extended Zoom chat, periodically pulling on an electric vape pen that would put Leonardo DiCaprio s to shame.  I approached it simply, I am myself a grandmother. It s nothing special. She certainly never saw the awards-season hoopla coming when she signed on to the film.  One of my dearest friends brought me the script – it was so very touching and authentic. After I read it, I called her back and asked, Is this based on a real-life story? She said, Yes. And I said, Okay, I ll do it.' And so it was that she joined the quiet immigrant tale, loosely based on Chung s formative years growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas, about the Yi family, led by father Jacob (Steven Yeun), which journeys from California to the South to pursue the dream of building their own farm. Of her decision to play Soonja – who is not the type of grandma the family s young son (Alan Kim) was expecting – Youn says, The people are what is important to me, not the script, not the fame, and not the money. Then she adds with a laugh: Well, not anymore. THE YOUN YUH-JUNG ESSENTIALS: HOW A CHANCE ENCOUNTER MADE A KOREAN MEGA STAR(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films)If you ve seen her work in Minari, it s hard to believe that Youn never intended to act; her career began out of a chance encounter. Searching for a part-time job at a train station while studying at Seoul s Hanyang University, she was approached and asked to stand beside someone. He was a famous MC,  Youn recalls.  He asked if I could sit by him and hand presents to the audience. I did, and then they gave me a check for it! So that was great! She was surprised to learn how much could be made as a performer, and the next thing she knew she was going out for auditions. Then, in 1971, she was approached by director Kim Ki-young to star in what would become the second feature of his Housemaid trilogy, which had begun with 1960 s The Housemaid. The film, Woman of Fire, was, like its predecessor, a hit at home and abroad and catapulted Youn into stardom. We never expected anything like what happened. We never expected to have this world reception from the audience. When I took the job, I didn t even know he was a famous director in Korea.    She quickly followed up Woman of Fire with the title role in Jang Hui-bin, playing the infamous concubine for a Korean television mini-series that became a national phenomenon. With such a debut and streak of stellar work over 50 years, she s been dubbed The Korean Meryl Streep, a comparison she humbly rejects as unworthy praise. I wouldn t dare, Youn says. No, no, no. I mean, she s everything! Her art? Her work? No, no, no. But like the chameleon Streep, Youn has also found ways to re-invent herself over several decades, even while revisiting her older work, as she did in the 2010 Housemaid remake, a feat she quickly brushed aside with another joke: I thought that s very nice, me being in [the reboot] – and still being alive. THE COMEBACK: RECORD-BREAKING SERIES AND A DARING FILM ROLEThere was a period when Youn could not be seen on screens – when she immigrated to America in 1975, she took a 10-year hiatus from filmmaking. When she returned to full-time acting in 1985, she quickly racked up an impressive streak of television work, including Hur Jun, about 15th-century royal physician that broke viewership records with nearly 65% of the nation tuning in.Later, in 2002, she got the script for the film that would restart her silver screen work. Her role in Im Sang-soo s award-winning A Good Lawyer s Wife – full of sex and affairs and dysfunction – is the type of part actor s dream to play. Still, the then 50-ish mother of two hesitated at the time because, I wouldn t be dressed most of the film, I thought, I don t want to be half-naked with a bra. She added: But that s why most of the Korean actresses of that age turned down the role. But, to tell you the truth, I was remodeling my house, and I needed to work. Pragmatic and plain-spoken, Youn is practical about her career and its progression. I don t [map it out] ahead of time because planning things is when you know it s not going to be like that. So now I don t plan anything. If something happens, it happens, I will enjoy it; or, if I fail, that s my fault. (Photo by Courtesy of GEM Entertainment)By the time she starred in Actresses in 2009, Youn was once again one of the most recognizable faces in Korean entertainment, and the unscripted dramedy teamed her up with other premiere names of Korean stage and screen, including Kim Min-hee, who starred in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook Park’s period romantic thriller The Handmaiden. In the primarily improvised Actresses, each of the six actresses plays a fictionalized version of themselves as they prepare for a Korean Vogue photo shoot at a studio on Christmas Eve. Despite the pedigree and talent surrounding her, Youn says many of the actors felt uncomfortable with that level of improvisation and self-revelation. That was the first time we d done something like that in Korea, because we were all very famous. Some didn t want to talk about their private life but, as the oldest one, [I have] nothing to lose – so, I talked about my divorce and my private life. It is no wonder she felt okay with the mockumentary premise: A gathering over cocktails between director E J-yong, Youn, and actress Go Hyun-jung – the two actors have been friends for years – had inspired the idea for the movie, with the director wanting to show the public how charming the actresses were in real life. Spending an hour with Youn – even over Zoom and with not a cocktail in sight – we can see where the filmmaker was coming from.FAN FAVORITES: SENSE8, REALITY SHOW YOUN S KITCHEN, AND A SEXY THRILLERThe role that American audiences were most likely to know Youn for, pre-Minari, was in the Netflix series Sense8, which marked her first foray into American television. In the show, created by the Wachowski siblings, Youn played an inmate who helps one of the telepathic sensates escape from prison. She told us she was surprised to learn about the series global cult-like status and the massive internet fan campaign that prompted the streaming giant to approve one final episode to tie up loose ends when it was canceled after just two seasons. I didn t know that it was such a [big deal] until you mentioned it, Youn says. I m not good at the internet, as you could guess.”It was a small part with some big challenges: the very conceit of the show – where certain people on screen are seen in the minds of some characters, but are invisible to others – made the acting very difficult. They were supposed to be invisible to me. It was very distracting while also trying to concentrate on my lines. You wouldn t know that to watch her in the series; Youn s performance as the wise prisoner made a significant impression on fans, even within her limited screen time.Scripted television is not the only place that Youn has made an impression on the small screen; she is also somewhat of a reality TV star with two shows under her belt. A chance meeting with a famed reality show producer allowed her to join the travel show Sisters Over Flowers before she later did Youn s Kitchen, which featured different twists on traditional Korean dishes.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC films. ) The producer very sincerely chased me, but I told him I m not the right person to be in a reality show, Youn says. I m a very frank person. I would be terrible. However, recognizing that the actress s undeniable charisma is the stuff reality shows are made of, he did not take no for an answer. “We kept meeting each other, and then he kept saying You re going to do the show.’ I didn t realize that at the time, but if he wanted somebody, he could get them – and that s a skill. Youn s Kitchen was another success, with the cinema icon peeling back the layers of her life a bit to celebrate with friends and good food.2012 s The Taste of Money, in which she gives a deliciously evil performance as the matriarch of an über-rich family, peeled back the layers even further. A gender-bent twist on the Housemaid story, Money placed Youn s Baek Geum-ok as the domineering leader of the house and the usual female servant character reset as a handsome young male secretary. Dismissed by critics after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the steamy thriller raised more than a few eyebrows with its depictions of sex, greed, and corruption, and has gone on to enjoy a cult-like status.Regardless of how critics judged Money, Youn marks it as another memorable moment for different reasons – it again allowed her to be very vulnerable on screen while playing a part typically given to male characters. Yeah, I was getting naked over 60, my goodness, she says. Usually, it is the men who get power and use that for sex, but this time it was me, a woman, and I have to say I liked that. FRESHEST WORK: STEALING SCENES IN CELEBRATED IMMIGRANT TALE, MINARI(Photo by Courtesy of a24)How does Youn feel about the current spotlight on Korean cinema, Korean stories, and – during this awards season – her work and Oscar chances? It s all Bong Joon-ho s fault! she says, laughing as she casts the Oscar-winning Parasite director as the villain who has brought global attention to Korean cinema. I am glad I m not in Korea talking to reporters there, [they] like to count the chickens before they ve hatched. There s pressure on me because people are expecting me to win something. We used to watch the Oscars like they were in another world, but because of him everyone in Korea thinks they are in Hollywood now.” I know things have happened, she went on to say, but this [holding up her Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh trophy with a sly smile] is the only actor award that came to me in the mail. (We re glad to know our shipping folks are on it.) When we point out that more hardware is likely coming, she gives a slight shoulder shrug and explains that nothing could ever diminish or amplify her love and connection to the film and those that collaborated with her make it.(Photo by Courtesy of a24)This bond and family-like dynamic carried over to everyone on the Minari crew, but particularly the main cast who, due to the sweltering heat, would often congregate in the set that stood in for the interior of the characters trailer home. The conditions of the shoot were a crucible – this is not a cushy trailer shoot, she says, laughing. You re in the middle of Oklahoma heat. And after one day, I thought I need to go back home. I don t think I should be shooting in America. Luckily, she stayed, in part due to an extended visit from the very friend who handed her the script in the first place – a visit that was something of a mea culpa. When Youn learned Plan B, a company co-founded by Brad Pitt, was producing the project, she figured it could be a lucrative role and inquired about the budget. Her friend relayed the rate in Korean currency, quickly calculating 200 million South Korean won (roughly 5,000), but when she learned her fee would be nowhere near that, she briefly had second thoughts. However, after the friend promised to come visit the set for an extended period of time, the idea of suffering through it seemed more palatable. In thinking back on the shoot now, she is reverential about the experience. I think of my friend sacrificing her vacation to come along with me, about hiding out in the set trailer with Alan, Steven, and Yeri [Han, who plays her daughter] – one of the few locations with ample AC. My friend is an exceptional cook, so every night we gathered at my Airbnb – everyone did – because the food was incredible, and that s how we became a family. With such a foundation behind it, it s no wonder the world – and awards voters – fallen a little bit in love with film and everyone involved, especially the unconventional grandmother at its center.Minari is in theaters and available On Demand now.Download Rotten Tomatoes printable Oscar Ballot; cast your vote in our digital Oscar ballot. sifu This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Blade, The Marvels, Red Sonja, and Superman. This WEEK S TOP STORYNEW DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT WB S NEXT SUPERMAN(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Three months ago, we learned that Warner Bros. had hired award-winning novelist and comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to start work on what was expected to be a Black Superman movie. This week, new details emerged about the studio s plans, including their goal of hiring a director of color for the job. Warner Bros. is reportedly working from a short list that includes Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), J.D. Dillard (Sleight), Regina King (One Night in Miami), and Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah). Ta-Nehisi Coates isn t expected to finish his Superman screenplay until just before Christmas, but Warner Bros. appears to be motivated to use the rest of 2021 to gear up. That will also likely include casting their new Superman himself, and you can see some of the possible candidates in this piece. As for what Coates Superman screenplay is actually about, no villain has been revealed yet, but Superman is still expected to be Kal-El from the planet Krypton, and it might be a period piece set in the 20th century. This film is also not expected to be part of the DC Extended Universe (which includes The Flash, in which Sasha Calle will play the first Latina Supergirl), but will instead be more of a standalone film similar to Joaquin Phoenix s Joker (Fresh at 68%), or the upcoming The Batman (3/4/2022), starring Robert Pattinson.Other Top Headlines1. MARVEL S PHASE 4 TO INCLUDE THE MARVELS, BLACK PANTHER 2: WAKANDA FOREVER(Photo by Marvel Studios)As accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines promises the return of the moviegoing experience, Marvel Studios released a sizzle reel this week highlighting their upcoming films for 2021, 2022, and 2023, including what appears to be the rest of their Phase 4 roster. The video includes our first look at footage from Eternals (11/5/2021) from recent Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (5/5/2023). Two of Marvel s upcoming sequels also received new titles, as the movies formerly called Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2 are now officially titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (7/8/2022) and The Marvels (11/11/2022), which will see Brie Larson s Carol Danvers joined by Disney+ stars Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau from WandaVision) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan from the upcoming Ms. Marvel). The video ends with a blue 4 surrounded by a circle, which suggests the final film of Phase 4 will be Fantastic Four, although no release date is given, and we don t know any cast yet.2. MARVEL S BLADE REBOOT APPARENTLY DELAYED OUT OF PHASE 4 (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Marvel Studios announced their films for Phase 4, as well as plans for Blade and Fantastic Four, which, at the time, were not expected to be included in Phase  4. This week, however, Fantastic Four seemed to be teased at the end of Marvel s new sizzle reel, while the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali was missing altogether. As it turned out, an explanation for this was to be found somewhat buried in The Hollywood Reporter s story this week about Warner Bros. hunt for a Superman director. Although they have very little else in common, both Blade and Superman will feature black leads, and both studios are seeking black or African American directors, which means both Marvel and Warner Bros. are working from similar shortlists of possible directors. It s for this reason that Marvel has apparently pushed the production start date of Blade from this September back almost a year to July, 2022 instead. In addition to giving Marvel more time to hire their Blade director, this delay will also allow screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour (HBO s Watchmen) more time to fine-tune  the Blade screenplay.3. JOJO RABBIT STAR TO PORTRAY OLYMPIC GYMNAST KERRI STRUG (Photo by Scott Green/©Bleecker Street Media)Currently 20 years old, New Zealand actress Thomasin McKenzie had a major breakout role in 2018 s Leave No Trace (Certified Fresh at 100%), which was followed one year later by Taika Waititi s Jojo Rabbit (Certified Fresh at 80%), in which she was basically the female lead (Scarlett Johansson played more of a supporting role). McKenzie has stayed pretty busy in the last two years (even with COVID-19), which includes roles in M. Night Shyamalan s Old (7/23/2021), Edgar Wright s Last Night in Soho (10/22/2021), and Jane Campion s The Power of the Dog. Actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde has also been staying busy following her directorial debut with Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 96%), as she recently wrapped Don t Worry Darling (starring Flroence Pugh, Harry Styles, and Chris Pine), and she s also developing a Sony Pictures superhero movie expected to be Spider-Woman (or something similar). Last year, just before the COVID-19 pandemic fully struck, Wilde also signed on to direct a biopic called Perfect, about 1992 and 1996 Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, and it appears Perfect is getting closer to being Wilde s next as director. Thomasin McKenzie is now signed to star in Perfect as Strug, who is perhaps best known for participating in the vault competition despite an injured knee, which meant that she then had to be carried to the podium by her coach. Filming of Perfect is expected to start in January following the release of Don t Worry, Darling.4. TENET STAR TEAMING UP WITH ROGUE ONE DIERCTOR FOR TRUE LOVE (Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros.)As COVID-19 kept many theaters in the USA closed for at least several months, many films were delayed until 2021, and others were picked up by various streaming outlets (and still are doing so). One of the directors who didn t give up on a theatrical release (for better or worse) was Christopher Nolan, whose Tenet (Fresh at 70%) was released in theaters unlike many other Warner Bros. films, which debuted instead on HBO Max. The star of Tenet was John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm Marie), and this week, Washington signed on to star in the next film from another sc-fi/action director, as he will star in a new film called True Love for director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The premise of True Love is being kept secret, except that it s a sci-fi story set in the near future, and the title also obviously suggests a romantic element.5. AMY ADAMS TO STAR AS A SCIENTIST WHOSE WORK INSPIRED JAMES CAMERON S AVATAR (Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)The world is still waiting for James Cameron s first Avatar sequel, which is currently scheduled for December 16, 2022, eight years after the sequel s first announced release date in 2014. As it might turn out, another movie related to Avatar could feasibly end up being released before Avatar 2. Amy Adams Bond Group Entertainment and Jake Gyllenhaal s Nine Stories production companies are teaming up for an adaptation of the memoir Finding the Mother Tree by scientist Suzanne Simard, with Amy Adams also attached to star in the film as Simard. The memoir is described as a scientific detective story about Simard s studies into the hidden fungus networks underground that trees use to communicate. The connection to Avatar comes in the form of the Tree of Souls featured in that film, which was inspired by Simard s work.6. IT DIRECTOR TEAMING UP WITH THE COUPLE BEHIND THE BIG SICK (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After years of delays (it was once scheduled for release on March 23, 2018), Warner Bros. The Flash has finally started filming under director Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT, IT: Chapter Two), and at the same time, Muschietti has already started developing another future project. Muschietti and his wife Barbara are teaming up with another husband-wife duo, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, who co-wrote the 2017 indie comedy hit The Big Sick (Certified Fresh at 98%), based on their own experiences together. The project bringing these two couples together is an adaptation  ofthe Edward Gorey illustrated book The Doubtful Guest, which tells the story of a strange penguin-like creature that drops in unexpectedly at a family manor. It s not yet clear if the film will be adapted as live action (perhaps with a tone like The Babadook), a live-action children s movie, or something else.7. KAITLYN DEVER FROM BOOKSMART LANDS ROMEO JULIET SPINOFF (Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Annapurna Pictures)In literature, there is a form of story called parallel fiction, in which characters from popular works are expanded upon in their own stories. Famous examples of this include Wicked (from The Wizard of Oz), The Mists of Avalon (from the Arthurian Legends), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (from Hamlet), and Alan Moore s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (from dozens of Victorian Era works). This story involves a supporting character from William Shakespeare s Romeo Juliet getting her own movie, starring Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 96%). That character will be Rosaline, who was Juliet s cousin, and at the beginning of Shakespeare s play, Romeo s romantic interest. Rosaline will be a modern, revisionist, rom-com take on the entire story (which suggests something more like 10 Things I Hate About You or Clueless), and it makes its way to production at 20th Century Studios after a long development cycle at MGM.8. OWEN WILSON S SECRET HEADQUARTERS TO BE DISCOVERED (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)In the CW superhero series Stargirl, Luke Wilson plays a former superhero sidekick who secretly moves back to his hometown, where he has a secret base in a car garage where he keeps a 15-foot-tall robot. That particular character beat might be a coincidence, but this week, Luke s brother Owen Wilson signed with producer Jerry Bruckheimer to star in a family-friendly superhero action movie called Secret Headquarters. It s not yet known for sure who Wilson will be playing, but the premise of Secret Headquarters is about a kid who discovers the secret headquarters of the world’s most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home and must defend it with his group of friends when villains attack. From that, we can probably guess that Wilson might be the hero in question, one of the supervillains, or the kid s dad. Secret Headquarters will be directed by the team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who also directed the Netflix movie Project Power (Fresh at 61%).9. MARVEL VILLAIN HANNAH JOHN-KAMEN TO DON THE ARMOR OF RED SONJA  (Photo by Ben Rothstein/©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Some movies have roads to production that are relatively easy to explain, and then there s Red Sonja. Originally created by Marvel Comics as a supporting character in Conan the Barbarian (not the movie), Red Sonja eventually got her own movie in 1985, starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, except that he wasn t playing Conan the Barbarian, which remains a weird thing that happened. Fast forward to the 2000s, when director Robert Rodriguez spent several years trying to remake Red Sonja and got as far as making a poster with Rose McGowan in costume kneeling above a release year of 2009 and then that didn t happen either. Then, it also didn t happen under director Bryan Singer. Long story short, this week, Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp) is now officially attached to star as Red Sonja for indie director Joey Soloway. We should note that the Red Sonja rights (and the Conan rights, and the Robert E. Howard stories she s loosely based on) have all exchanged hands repeatedly since the 1970s, so this Red Sonja movie is now basically its own thing, and is unlikely to have any connections to Conan (and definitely not Marvel). On an Apple device? sifu 2. ANDY SERKIS CONFIRMED AS DIRECTOR OF NEXT YEAR S VENOM SEQUEL It was just last week that The Weekly Ketchup reported that Andy Serkis was among the directors in the running for the sequel to Venom, based on the popular Marvel Comics anti-hero. Given that Sony Pictures has scheduled Venom 2 for release next year (10/2/2020), it probably shouldn t be surprising that the studio indeed moved quickly this week to lock in Andy Serkis as the sequel s director. Serkis has also previously co-starred as the villain Klaw (spelled Klaue in the movies) in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, and it s not yet known whether he will also be taking a role in Venom 2. Serkis made his directorial debut in 2017 with Breathe, and also directed last year s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Although Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) is currently credited as the writer of the Venom sequel, Serkis was quoted this week as saying that the film s star, Tom Hardy, is very involved with the writing with Kelly Marcel of the new story. As revealed by the mid-credits bumper in Venom, Woody Harrelson is expected to be the big bad in Venom 2 as the symbiote-powered serial killer Carnage.3. GEMMA CHAN MAY REPRISE HER CAPTAIN MARVEL ROLE IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection) Ever since Marvel Studios second film, The Incredible Hulk, included Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been built on the inclusion in (almost) every film of elements from other movies in the franchise. Until this week, the only apparent connections that next year s The Eternals had to previous films was that Knowhere (from Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War) was built out of the skull of one of the Celestials, and that Peter Quill s father (Kurt Russell as Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) was himself a Celestial, one of which is expected to be the threat in The Eternals. Another possible connection was revealed this week with the news that Gemma Chan is now in talks with Marvel to co-star in The Eternals. Her role hasn t been confirmed yet, but Gemma Chan also played the Kree warrior Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel (other actors have played multiple roles, but it s relatively rare). Irish actor Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) is also reportedly up for an unknown role in The Eternals, which is scheduled for release on November 6, 2020.4. DISNEY CEO CONFIRMS PLANET OF THE APES REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY FRANCHISE (Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)As Disney was putting the finishing touches on acquiring the 20th Century Fox film properties, the focus from most writers (and rightly so, arguably) was on properties like Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Avatar, but the Fox catalog also includes Alien, Die Hard, Ice Age, and  Kingsman. One of the other properties that Fox has had success with since 2011 was the rebooted Planet of the Apes, which as a trilogy had a domestic tally of 2 million (and a worldwide total of over .68 billion). Given those numbers, this week s news is probably a non-story, but it s still interesting. While talking about Disney s future plans for their Fox properties this week, CEO Bob Iger for the first time specifically mentioned Planet of the Apes as a priority franchise for the studio. Unfortunately, this news also needs to be phrased in correlation to the rest of Fox s development slate, which is reportedly being flushed to focus on bigger, higher profile titles and less on mid-range movies like this week s The Art of Racing in the Rain.5. IDRIS ELBA AND LUCAS FROM STRANGER THINGS SADDLE UP AS CONCRETE COWBOYS (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Now that Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw is in theaters, and his work on Cats is complete, Idris Elba is ready for his next film. Until this week, that was expected to be The Suicide Squad, which starts filming in September, but instead, Elba is also squeezing in a smaller film in this summer. That movie is called Concrete Cowboys, and it will tell the true story of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, a non-profit organization devoted to inner-city horsemanship in north Philadelphia. Idris Elba s estranged son in Concrete Cowboys will be played by Caleb McLaughlin, who is currently best known for his role as Lucas Sinclair in Netflix s hit series Stranger Things. Concrete Cowboys was also the title of a late 1970s TV show starring Jerry Reed, but the two are otherwise unrelated. Elba and McLaughlin will also be joined in Concrete Cowboys by Byron Bowers (The Chi), Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), and Lorraine Toussaint (Selma).6. WESLEY SNIPES AND LESLIE JONES ARE COMING 2 AMERICA (Photo by Warner Bros.)We ve known for a while that Paramount Pictures had scheduled the Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall sequel Coming 2 America for December 18, 2020 (up against the video game adaptation Uncharted and the remakes of Dune and West Side Story), but it wasn t until this week that casting news really ramped up. The stars returning from the original 1988 comedy include James Earl Jones, John Amos reprising his role as the owner of the Scottish-themed McDowell s fast food restaurant, and Louie Anderson as a McDowell s employee. The new cast members will include Wesley Snipes as General Izzi, the military dictator of a neighboring nation, Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne as Prince Akeem s American daughter, and rapper Rick Ross.7. REMAKES OF HOME ALONE AND NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM TO DEBUT ON DISNEY+(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Ever since it was first announced last year, we ve known that the upcoming Disney+ streaming service would be the home for some of Disney s live action remakes, including Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone. This week, we learned that Disney+ will also be the destination for several remakes of some of the 20th Century Fox properties that Disney acquired earlier this year. Although there may be (and probably will be) others, the four titles specifically mentioned were Home Alone, Cheaper by the Dozen, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Night at the Museum. With the possible exception of Night at the Museum, these titles fit right in with the theme of Disney focusing their theatrical efforts on big movies. We already got some news about the Home Alone remake this week with the revelation that Disney reportedly hopes to cast Melissa McCarthy as Kevin s mom. The Disney+ streaming app will launch on November 12, 2019.8. KEVIN HART NOW ATTACHED TO UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT REMAKE (Photo by Warner Bros.)Because the development process can sometimes take several years, the reality is that there are many film projects that never get made at all. For example, back in 2002, we first heard about plans for a remake of the 1974 crime comedy Uptown Saturday Night, which originally featured the trio of Harry Belafonte, Bill Cosby, and Sidney Poitier. At that point, Will Smith had been attached to both produce and star in the remake, but in the 17 years since, Smith dropped out (he s still one of the remake s producers). In the last week, we heard first that Uptown Saturday Night will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Brown Sugar), and then that it is now Kevin Hart who is attached to star. It s not yet known who might join Hart in the remake, but an easy guess might be one of Hart s frequent costars, like maybe Ice Cube or Dwayne Johnson.9. SLEEPER YOUNG ADULT HIT AFTER TO GET A SEQUEL(Photo by Quantrell D. Colbert/ © Aviron Pictures)If you re from outside a certain specific target demographic, it s possible that you don t remember (or have never even heard of) the recent 2019 romantic drama After (Rotten at 18%). If that is where you fall, you might also be surprised to discover that After earned nearly million from a budget of just million. Having said that, only million of that was earned domestically, suggesting that After was more successful overseas. Regardless, the film apparently did well enough for its producers to move forward with plans for a sequel called After We Collided, based on another novel in the YA series by author Anna Todd. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin are both expected to return for the sequel, which will be directed by Roger Kumble (Cruel Intentions) when it starts filming later this month.Like this?
