This Week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (those stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering up-and-coming titles like Akira, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers. This WEEK S TOP STORYTenet Sets a Release Date, Brings Taylor-Johnson, Caine, Kapadia on Board(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures, @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Except for movies like Dunkirk and his Dark Knight trilogy (where obviously we knew it was about Batman), director Christopher Nolan frequently keeps the details of his films relatively secret during the early phases of development and production. For example, both Inception and Interstellar were relative mysteries for a long while (and that s even though Nolan took over directing Interstellar from Steven Spielberg). This week, we learned that Nolan s next film will be called Tenet when it s released next summer (July 17, 2020), which Merriam-Webster defines as, a principle, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true. Tenet is described variably as an action epic and/or globetrotting adventure to be filmed in seven different parts of the world. John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) will lead an ensemble cast including Robert Pattinson (Twilight) and Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). That ensemble grew this week with the additions of Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver from Avengers: Age of Ultron), Kenneth Branagh, Dimple Kapadia, Clémence Poésy, and frequent Nolan costar Michael Caine. Tenet is scheduled for July 17, 2020, up against Bob s Burgers: The Movie, the week after Ghostbusters 3 and The Purge 5, and the week before Disney s Jungle Cruise. Speculation about Tenet is just getting started, including this piece that suggests that the premise may involve time travel.Fresh Developments1. Catwoman, Penguin Named as The Batman Villains, Giving Us a Sense of Deja vu(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)Since Tim Burton s 1989 Batman, we ve seen a few of the villains of Gotham City depicted more than once, including Bane, The Joker, and Two-Face. The Burton/Schumacher villains that weren t included in Christopher Nolan s Dark Knight trilogy include Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, The Riddler, and The Penguin, but now we re hearing that one of them will return to the movies for the first time in 29 years. That s because the two main villains in The Batman (June 25, 2021) will reportedly be Catwoman and the Penguin, which also makes it a de facto return to 1992 s Batman Returns, in which those villains were played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny De Vito. No casting has been announced for either role yet, but Frozen star Josh Gad has been posting online about his interest in playing The Penguin for years now.2. John Wick: Chapter 4 Set for 2021Joel MearesJohn Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum (89% Certified Fresh) hadn t even been out for a week when a teaser was dropped for the next chapter in the franchise, titled for now, unsurprisingly, John Wick: Chapter 4. The next film in Keanu Reeves high-body-count franchise is now scheduled for just two years from this week, on May 21, 2021. We obviously don t know what the fourth film might entail (though the ending of Parabellum does suggest some hints). This release date announcement did have one immediate response, however, from Warner Bros., which quickly bumped their animated superhero movie DC Super Pets from May 21, 2021 back a full year to May 22, 2022. The DC Comics superheroes expected to be featured in DC Super Pets include Ace the Bat-Hound, Krypto the Super-Dog, and Streaky the Super-Cat. With this move, DC Super Pets will now come after Joker (October 4, 2019), Birds of Prey (February 7, 2020), Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5, 2020), The Batman (June 25, 2012), and The Suicide Squad (August 6, 2021). There s no word yet on when Marvel Studios might ever release a Pet Avengers movie.3. Taika Waititi s Akira Adaptation Due in Just Under Two Years(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)There was a time when movie blogs were awash regularly with screeds against the potential evils of a live-action Akira (whether based on the 1988 anime classic, or the original mang

om the H in the Hollywood sign in the early 1930s.The limited series, co-created by Ian Brennan, plays out like a dream – what would happen if profit-driven studios had taken the brave step of giving minorities major lead roles during Hollywood s Golden Age? – and comes loaded with many of über-producer Murphy s TV signatures. There s a cast of attractive young newcomers (Broadway star Jeremy Pope, Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Harrier, and more); a handful of Murphy veterans (The Assassination of Gianni Versace’s Darren Criss, The Politician’s David Corenswet); plenty of visual panache, this time with a 1940s Hollywood flair; and lots to put a smile on any LGBTQ viewer s face — a fictionalized Rock Hudson is among the lead characters, for starters. And as with American Horror Story, Feud, and other Murphy-produced series, Hollywood is marked by a number of veteran actresses in the kind of complex, flashy roles you don t see a lot of outside of Murphyland. Holland Taylor is a wise studio executive; Mira Sorvino plays an aging actress struggling to land a role; and Broadway legend Patti LuPone stars as Avis Amberg, the studio head s wife who has to take over when he suffers a heart attack. It s Avis who makes the call to cast Washington, and who deals with the fallout, and it s LuPone who runs away with the series: Whether she s dressing down a group of bean counters trying to shutter her studio, getting plastered backstage at the Oscars, or getting freaky with 26-year-old Corenswet s Jack – expect memes of the staircase moment to do the rounds – she s a joy to watch.Rotten Tomatoes recently called LuPone at the Connecticut home that s enjoyed some fame during quarantine; the actress has been offering virtual tours of her eclectically decorated basement on Twitter ever since fans began obsessing over it when she appeared on a Rosie O Donnell live stream. It was the day after her birthday when we called, and she was hungover from a night with people on Zoom getting trashed on martinis — not something she usually drinks. Her mouth may have been dry, but LuPone had plenty to say about working with Murphy, what she d change about the entertainment industry today, her Tiger King–themed birthday present, and why those in the arts deserve more respect.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Hollywood is just the latest Ryan Murphy production you ve been a part of – fans will remember you from AHS and Pose. What is it about what Ryan’s doing in the television landscape that’s drawing you to his projects?Patti LuPone: He offers me jobs. It s simple is that. And he offers me really great parts. I did a little thing on Glee, that was the first time I worked for him. I got a call from my agent, and they were very excited about it, they said, Ryan Murphy wants to do a whole episode about you, Patti. And I m like, No, I m still a working actor. I cannot be Patti LuPone d out of the business. And they were shocked I said no. Because they didn t know how Ryan would react. I said, Tell them, I would be happy to do one scene, but I can t have an entire episode. And I did this one scene with Lea Michele and Cory Monteith. But then I was offered American Horror Story then Pose and now this. You know what Ryan’s doing? He s forming a repertory company on film. And that s an extraordinary thing — that Ryan will offer you a great part in a great television show, you know what I mean? It s just really wonderful that somebody trusts you enough to go, “Here, play this. Here, play that.” It s always different.(Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)This particular role in Hollywood, Avis, is so meaty. Part of it is just the clothes — which I m still getting over because you get to wear some amazing stuff — but then you also get to have this boy toy and some pretty wild sex scenes with David [Corenswet]. And then she becomes this boss business woman. What was it like to play all these aspects of Avis?LuPone: Well, I had an indication [of the arc] when Ryan talked to me about the part; he told me what would happen, that she would end up running a studio and making movies just for gays, minorities, and women. So I knew that that was going to be the arc of the character. And he did preface it by saying, “…and she has sex scenes.” And I said: Finally. We only got a script at a time, so I didn t really know how exactly it was going to unfold. I was thrilled that he trusted me, and I was thrilled that he gave me meat to act.Ryan has spoken about Hollywood as a sort of rewriting of movie history that gives people a happy ending who didn t necessarily get a happy ending in many ways. It’s a corrective fantasy. Is there something about the entertainment industry or Hollywood today that you would rewrite, as Ryan does in the series? What would you change about the industry if you could?LuPone: First of all, there are no showmen left. Do you know what I mean? There s no Louis B. Mayers, Jack Warners left; there are no Irving Thalbergs left. These people had theater in their blood. And I mean theater encompassing everything, do you know what I mean? They would have theatrical blood where they could choose writers and they could choose materials; materials to give to an audience. What are we doing as far as filmmaking is concerned today? We re regenerating cartoons. So I would hope that artists would lead. And I don t just mean actors, I mean anybody with an artistic bent would lead. My problem is that — and this is on Broadway as well, any entertainment aspect — we are second-guessing the audience. We are underestimating the audience. They can take a whole lot more and they need it. We need to educate, [and] they need to educate us. So, we should put everything out, much broader ideas, and let the audience decide. They are smarter than we think they are, or that we give them credit for. (Not me, because I m on that side of the stage where I deal with them.) But we need to empower the people that green-light films so they aren t underestimating them.Is the problem that those particular decision-makers lack an artistic bent?LuPone: I think that s part of it. The other is financial. I saw it changing when I was doing [ABC drama] Life Goes On years ago. I saw it changing when the Harvard bean counters, the Yale bean counters came out and took over Hollywood and the music industry. I d heard about it and I sort of felt it when I was in California, that was 1989 to 1993. You could feel it changing. Also, there should be more women in every position of power, not just in the entertainment industry, but in our politics. There s just something that the men lack right now and that s empathy.Ryan seems to have that quality.LuPone: Oh, Ryan is a champion.OK, I have to ask you about your time social distancing in Connecticut. Your home, and particularly your basement, has taken the Internet by storm ever since you appeared on Rosie O’Donnell’s live stream, and you’ve showed us your cassettes and jukebox and all sorts of things on Twitter. Are you surprised that people are so fascinated by your home and your basement and your life right now?LuPone: Yes. Yes. Yes. But you know what, if it s bringing anybody joy, I m very happy to do it. It has to be when the inspiration strikes, so that there is a mood to [the Twitter videos]. And today the mood struck because we were planning this one and I had to wait until I was sort of in the right frame of mind. What happened was I got really trashed last night because it s my birthday. I got trashed on martinis, which I don t drink. So I m hungover today and I said to my kid, Let s do it. I m not bathing, I m not combing my hair. I m not brushing my teeth. Let s do it right now. And we did it. People wanted to know what was in the locker, so I showed him things that were in the locker.I heard somebody wanted to see more of my basement. 😘 pic.twitter.com/fBea7emR6h Patti LuPone (@PattiLuPone) March 23, 2020You now know you what I m doing straight after this! What is a Patti LuPone hangover cure, by the way?LuPone: Oh my God, I don t know. I m still hungover. I woke up so sick. Apparently, I was crazy last night. I don t remember anything, but my husband told me. Because it was Bingo, it was Zoom Bingo. And I started yelling at the computer — well not the computer — and then I won and then I peed my pants and then I came upstairs. What the hell was happening? Maybe there s too much information for you, but it was one of those sort of I just passed out. Then I woke up this morning, my throat was so dry, my head was pounding. Who the hell knows? These days it s just kind of like every night could turn into that if you let it. I haven t seen a movie collection necessarily or DVDs or VHSes in your basement. Do you have one and what might we find in it?LuPone: Yes. And you know it s in the corner? It was by Nipper [her statue of the RCA dog]. But we ve just gotten rid of a lot of VHSes as well — actually we haven t gotten rid of the VHSes yet, because we re going to transfer them to digital — but [we have gotten rid of] a lot of the DVDs because they re basically on the computer. We’re leaving our home to our kids, right? That s what parents do. So my husband and I, in this time, are trying to lessen our imprint — not that we re going to die anytime soon, but you know how you collect stuff? We’re in the process of purging a lot of stuff that is not necessary anymore. So a lot of the DVDs went south. I m not going to watch the movies again, or if I want to, they re on Netflix or YouTube. So the physical movies are gone. I mean, I just got rid of a bookcase: 12 boxes of books that I got rid of!Oh no! But that s good. You re doing your part. Is there a film that you ve returned to or a TV show that you ve returned to during this time? Or something new you’ve discovered?LuPone: I m watching Babylon Berlin and My Brilliant Friend and Grace and Frankie, and now I want to watch Unorthodox; oh, somebody told me about Sex Education. But what I m doing is reading, I m reading a lot. I m reading the latest translation of Madame Bovary, which I d never read. Then starting on Hilary Mantel s The Light and the Mirror.I’m reading that at the moment, actually. Did you see the Wolf Hall miniseries?LuPone: I did. And at first, I didn t understand what Mark Rylance was doing [in the role of Thomas Cromwell]. But I think Mark Rylance is one of the great actors. I didn t understand what he was doing, and then Oh, Oh. It deeply revealed itself. I mean, he s extraordinary. (Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)And I know you’ve watched Tiger King…LuPone: Yes, I did. You know what I got for my birthday from my kid? I got an authentic bumper sticker that says “Joe Exotic for President.” But it s one of those authentic ones from 2016.That s amazing. Ryan is reportedly working on series about Joe Exotic with Rob Lowe. Is there a role that you would covet to play?LuPone: Maybe Saff. Saff Saffery. [Laughs] I should play Saff; I m too old to play Saff. Um Yeah. We ll have to find a role for me. I don t know. I can t be Carole Baskin… No, it d be a challenge. On a more serious note, there’s been a lot of talk these last few weeks about how important the arts are — we’ve all turned to TV and film and music and reading to keep ourselves sane. Do you think there might be some sort of landscape change in terms of how government and people just view writers and musicians and filmmakers when this is all over? More respect? More funding?LuPone: Not as long as we have the present government. Not at all  I do not think so if the Republicans hold power; I think we will sink further, further into obscurity if they hold on to power in 2020. And I think we are taken for granted, and we are also treated as third-class citizens in this country. That s been my experience my entire career, in various ways. So I don t think so. But other countries? Probably so, because they re just smarter than we are. And more cultured than we are.(Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)I’m wondering if you can expand a little for someone who s reading this and doesn t understand perhaps what you mean by “third-class citizens.” The perception might be, Patti LuPone or Ryan Murphy, et cetera, all live wonderful lives. Can you unpack that a bit?LuPone: Theatricals have always been treated with phenomenal distrust. The actress on stage, she was considered a prostitute; they were the first people that wore makeup and she was they were sub-society. I remember when I was performing, The Acting Company was performing at the Ford Theater, the reopening of the Ford Theater during Jimmy Carter s administration. And the Carters were coming to the performance that night, and we were invited to the White House to meet the President. Basically, it was the clearing out of the social calendar and there were some celebrities there: Alexis Smith, Henry Fonda, John Houseman. And just as they got to Henry Fonda and John Houseman, the military guards stopped the receiving line. I actually said, No, no, you can t do that. They re coming to see us tonight. And we were escorted off the property, basically. We ve always been considered do I want to say “non-essential”? Even though it is.I have said forever, it s an inherent right: The arts are an inherent right in human nature. And they keep de-funding the National Endowment for the Arts. I mean people were bitching that they gave the Kennedy Center million in the first stimulus package. The arts are crucial for mental and spiritual health. Yet we are, like I said, taken for granted. Or put in situations where we are totally dismissed. I have felt it my entire career. And, yes, I make a living. [But] I don t always make a living. There s that expression, You re only as good as your last shift, and I m going to be in financial peril if this goes on too much longer. I m no different than anybody else. Finally, we know that one of your theatrical pet peeves is when people put their phones on in the theater — you famously grabbed a phone from an audience member during a performance of Gypsy on Broadway. Do you have any pet peeves when you re going to the cinema? Things that really bother you?LuPone: The same thing. People talking during the movie or people texting during the movie. It s the exact same thing, you are together in a proscenium environment. And it s public manners. We, in this country, have forgotten our public manners — that other people exist besides ourselves. So, it s how we conduct ourselves in theaters, all kinds of theaters. Movie theaters, legitimate theaters. It s the same piece.Hollywood is available to stream on Netflix from Friday, May 1, 2020.ag九游会登录The Suicide Squad – a group of mostly obscure supervillains from the DC Universe who go on deadly missions on behalf of the government in exchange for reduced prison sentences – have already graced the big screen once. In 2016, Will Smith and Margot Robbie led the team in director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Reviews weren’t great, to say the least, but the movie did well enough that Warner Bros. commissioned a reboot due out in 2021, this one titled The Suicide Squad. There have been a couple of trailers for the film, the most recent of which came out on June 22, 2021. Prior to that, on March 26, DC revealed the explosive (and explosively funny) first trailer for the movie. Last August at DC’s FanDome event, director James Gunn and Co. revealed a bunch of new details about the film, giving fans their first glimpse of which characters are featured in the movie, along with an extended behind-the-scenes featurette. Now that the Suicide Squad is really gearing up for big summer action, it feels like a good occasion for a rundown of everything you need to know about The Suicide Squad. [Updated with new trailer on 6/22/21]Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn Is the Director(Photo by Christopher Polk/Getty Images)James Gunn, best known for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s two Guardians of the Galaxy films, is the writer-director behind The Suicide Squad. Gunn was hired to write the movie in October of 2018, a few months after Disney fired him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to old, inappropriate joke tweets. Perhaps because the tweets were brought up as part of a targeted campaign by alt-right agitators, Disney eventually reversed its decision and re-hired Gunn. However, Guardians 3 would have to wait, because the director was already committed to The Suicide Squad. Gunn is the first person to make both an MCU movie and a modern DC movie. At DC FanDome, Gunn said the movie – which finished shooting in February – was by far the biggest movie I ve ever made, and promised it had as many explosions and crashes as any other film ever made. It’s not a sequel to the 2016 movie (not exactly)(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)The Suicide Squad is not a sequel to the 2016 movie, as producer Peter Safran told ComicBook.com in April of 2019. But, it’s not completely not a sequel, either, as there will be some returning actors and characters from the Ayer movie. This is fitting with DC’s more laissez-faire approach to continuity ever since Justice League underwhelmed critically and at the box office. Films like Aquaman and Shazam! have nominally existed in the DCEU, but they largely exist on their own. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey was technically a sequel to the first Suicide Squad, but aside from Margot Robbie’s titular character and one tossed-off line referencing the events of the earlier film, it didn’t really acknowledge the 2016 movie at all. Expect The Suicide Squad to take what worked from the first movie and leave behind anything that didn’t. Continuity doesn’t matter nearly as much as having some fun.A handful of actors from the first movie will reprise their roles(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros.)Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will return for the third time in The Suicide Squad. She’ll be joined by three of her 2016 co-stars: Viola Davis will reprise her role as agent Amanda Waller, the brains behind the Squad’s mission; Joel Kinnaman will play Rick Flag, the team’s handler; and Jai Courtney will return as the Aussie villain Captain Boomerang. Will Smith will not be reprising his role as Deadshot, Jared Leto’s Joker is apparently too twisted for a reprise appearance (despite showing up in Zack Snyder s Justice League), and nobody from the Birds of Prey cast, aside from Robbie, is confirmed to return, either. A Ton of DC characters Are Making Their First Appearance, and Most Are ObscureAlthough most of the cast had been revealed earlier, it wasn’t until DC’s FanDome event on August 22, 2020 that the full list of new characters was revealed — and most of them are very obscure for the casual DC viewer. Idris Elba is playing Bloodsport, a mercenary with high-tech weaponry who is traditionally a Superman villain in the comics. The trailer released in June reveals that he’s working with the Suicide Squad because Waller is using his daughter Tyla (Storm Reid) as leverage. We also hear that he “put Superman in the ICU” with a Kryptonite bullet, which is pretty hard-core. Pete Davidson plays Blackguard, a villain to the time-traveling hero Booster Gold who wears high-tech armor. (He is also very afraid of werewolves, apparently.) Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi is playing the telepathic Flash villain The Thinker. John Cena plays Peacemaker, who he described during FanDome as a “douchey Captain America.” Nathan Fillion plays T.D.K. — and it’s rumored that “T.D.K.” is an acronym for “The Detachable Kid,” a new name for one of DC’s most infamous characters, a wannabe Legion of Super-Heroes member called Arm-Fall-Off Boy.David Dastmalchian plays Polka-Dot Man, a corny Batman villain (and a personal favorite of Gunn s); Daniela Melchior plays Ratcatcher 2, another Batman villain who can control vermin; and Mayling Ng plays Mongal, an alien conquerer. Javelin, an Olympic athlete-turned-Green Lantern villain, will be played by Flula Borg, while we also finally learned who will be voicing King Shark, a giant walking shark, as James Gunn revealed on Twitter that it s none other than Sylvester Stallone. And, because this is a James Gunn movie, two of his frequent collaborators appear too: Michael Rooker plays Savant, a genius blackmailer, while Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn, who did on-set stop-motion work as Rocket Raccoon in Guardians, will again get into the mo-cap suit to play a rodent, this time a character named Weasel. In addition, Storm Reid plays Bloodsport s daughter Tyla, Juan Diego Botto is General Luna, Joaquín Cosío is Major General Suarez, and Jennifer Holland is Emilia Harcourt.Tinashe Kajese, Julio Ruiz, and Taika Waititi, who many initially speculated might provide the voice of King Shark, will also appear in the film in undisclosed roles.Don’t know who most of these characters are? That’s OK! It’s kind of the point. Suicide Squad, especially in Gunn’s hands, is an excuse to use a bunch of obscure characters and either turn them into fan-favorites or kill them off without a second’s hesitation — or both. The Villain Is a Classic — And Very Goofy — Justice League Bad Guy(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)The first proper trailer for The Suicide Squad hinted at the film debut of another DC character — one of the strangest but most important villains in comics history. The starfish-like kaiju is Starro, an alien conqueror who has the distinction of being the first bad guy the Justice League ever fought. The June trailer makes it clear that Starro is going to be the villain in The Suicide Squad, or at least the antagonist, since pretty much all the main characters are villains  — that’s kind of the whole point. Waller reveals that the Squad’s mission is to destroy every last trace of “Project Starfish,” clarifying to Cena’s Peacemaker that the name has nothing to do with buttholes. Instead, it’s likely that “Project Starfish” is some sort of secret operation to harness Starro’s psychic and mind-controlling powers. Presumably, it all went sideways, and it’s up to the Squad to defeat a giant starfish. Remember when superhero movies were concerned about being serious? What a time to be alive. It Will Be a Gritty 1970s War Movie, With Laughs and Plenty of ActionThe trailer doesn’t specifically reveal too much in terms of plot, other than showing that the Squad will be in some Central American-type setting and eventually battle Starro. The restricted red-band trailer is instead more focused on re-establishing the “rules” of the Suicide Squad and demonstrating the R-rated tone. Amanda Waller offers a group of criminals reduced prison sentences if they either complete their mission or die trying, and bombs are implanted in everybody s skulls in case they try to jump ship. But King Shark literally rips a dude in half and John Cena’s Peacemaker states that it would be “no problemo” for him to eat every dick on a beach in the name of liberty, so yeah, very James Gunn. The earlier FanDome event featured a preview clip with a bunch of juicy behind-the-scenes footage, but it didn’t give away much in the way of plot either. The clip, which featured lots of gunfire and talk of “exploding genitals,” certainly makes the movie seem action-packed. At FanDome, Gunn said it has “more explosions than any movie ever” and teased that it had a massive amount of special effects, both of which seem to be born out by the trailer. Producer Peter Safran likened it to a “gritty 1970s war movie combined will the brilliance of James Gunn’s characters and comedy.” During FanDome, Gunn said he considered the film to be a spiritual sequel to comic writer John Ostrander’s original 1987 Suicide Squad series rather than an adaptation. “It has the spirit and the lifeblood of the Ostrander books,” Gunn said, noting that he was just adding some of the wonderful and weird characters that have been created for DC in the years since the comic ended. It Will Premiere on August 6 in Theaters and on HBO MaxThe Suicide Squad is slated to hit theaters on August 6, 2021, and it will also stream on HBO Max for subscribes on that same day for no additional cost, as is the plan for all 2021 Warner Bros. releases. (It will leave HBO Max one month after it premieres, so watch fast.) It appears that The Suicide Squad was spared from the most disruptive aspects of the coronavirus pandemic. In April, Gunn tweeted that they were “extremely fortunate” that they were able to wrap shooting and set up the ability to edit from the crew’s homes before COVID-19 shut down the movie industry. During FanDome, he once again affirmed that the film would hit theaters on August 6.The Suicide Squad premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.On an Apple device? It also prompts The Hound to get his ass in gear to save her.7. “Not Today”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Arya plays a deadly game of hide-and-seek with the wights who have made it inside Winterfell. There are too many of them. So now we know what was obscured in the darkness of the trailer: dozens of wights chasing our petite hero. When Beric and The Hound later come to her rescue, it’s almost as if Arya had given up. She stares almost helplessly when wights attack Beric, which is very unlike her. The trio retreats to a room where Melisandre has been hiding/waiting for them, and Beric dies.“What do we say to the god of death?” Melisandre asks Arya, which immediately summons the ghost of Syrio Forel (not literally).Arya: “Not today.”(Photo by HBO)8. Dragon Fight!(Photo by HBO)The dragons in the moonlight above the storm clouds is a beautiful image – this-dragon-moment-is-brought-to-you-by-Hallmark beautiful. But the scene later turns deadly as Jon and Rhaegal lock together in dragon battle against the Night King and wight dragon Viserion, who tears at his brother’s flesh and snaps his jaws at snack-sized Jon on Rhaegal’s back. The Night King tries to be smooth and grabs for his ice spear, but falls off (not to his death, of course – because that would be too easy). The scene of Winterfell from the air at this point, by the way, looks like a nighttime Burning Man riot: a circle of fire and waves of bodies flowing this way and that.Rhaegal goes down and Jon tumbles off. Daenerys tries dragonfire on the Night King on the ground, but he does not burn (like a Targaryen). She retreats when he aims a spear her way, but Jon pursues him on foot with Longclaw. The Night King raises a new army from the freshly dead, including those inside Winterfell – including, they make a point to show, Lyanna, Qhono, and Edd. Was that Podrick standing behind the Night King before he pimp-walked away? OMG, where’s Podrick?Wights, meanwhile, swarm Drogon, and Daenerys falls off.9. Tales from the Crypt(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Tyrion laments that he’s not out there. Sansa says he’d be dead. Then he suggests they should’ve stayed married. She rightly notes his divided loyalties (aka “You loooove her, you want to marry her…”) for Daenerys. The dead rise in the crypt of Winterfell even (thanks for the heads-up, Jared Harris), and dusty, ancient Starks start tearing at people.Next time, maybe freeze them in carbonite?10. Theon and Jorah(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)The Night King swaggers into the godswood with his court. Bran: “Theon, you’re a good man. Thank you.” Theon charges the Night King and gets a spear thrust into his side.Elsewhere, when a wight wave threatens to overcome Daenerys, Ser Jorah puts himself between them and her and is mortally (maybe, probably) wounded protecting her. He leans on Heartsbane in his final stand.11. “Arya Stark” Becomes a Verb(Photo by HBO)Holy sh ! Arya killed the Night King. She takes a flying leap and, despite being caught by the throat, still manages to thrust that ancient Valyrian-steel dagger into his belly. (To Arya Stark someone will forever refer to that move.) He explodes, his court explodes, Viserion (who Jon has been dodging all this time) collapses to the ground in a pile of loose bones and ragged flesh, as do all of the other wights.(We heard echos of Jon’s voice: “How did you sneak up on me?”)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)There’s a roll call of who’s still alive: Arya, Bran, Daenerys, Jorah (until he s not), Drogon, Jon, Tormund, Gendry, Grey Worm, Brienne, Jaime, Podrick, Tyrion, Sansa, Varys, his new little crypt birds, Missandei, Gilly and Little Sam (did anyone see Samwell Tarly in the roll call?), The Hound, Melisandre (until she isn’t), and Ser Davos. Where s Ghost!? Did Rhaegal survive?I hit “replay.”What was your favorite moment of the episode? Tell us in the comments!Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

(Photo by Everett Collection)Our new Classic Film Catch-Up feature connects you with classic films to put on your watchlist – beloved favorites and hidden gems alike. With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watch lists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you. This week in the Classic Film Catch-Up, we re ready to dance and sing about lesser-known or forgotten musicals – some classics, and some should-be-classics. The 50s and 60s were truly the golden ages of movie musicals; Best Picture winners like The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, and An American in Paris made stars out of Natalie Wood, Leslie Caron, and Rita Moreno, while established stars like Julie Andrews, Gene Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn catapulted to icon status on the backs of musical roles during this period. Later years saw rock musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Tommy break into the mainstream – however, countless gems have been largely forgotten by modern audiences. And we re here to fix that. Some titles on this list found cult-like followings in later years while others were unfortunate victims of too-close comparisons with their Broadway inspiration – either way, we think the films make up an eclectic roster of must-watch musicals. Read below for our list of hidden gem classic musicals you need to see or revisit.Got another favorite hidden gem classic musical you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) 78% What is it? A rags to riches musical about a famed socialite who survived the sinking of the Titanic. Why you need to see it: Debbie Reynolds is widely known for her role in Singin in the Rain – and for being Carrie Fisher s mother. However, if you want to see the triple-threat performer at her peak you must watch The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Reynolds plays the famed Denver socialite from humble beginnings who survived a flood as an infant and then the Titanic disaster as an adult. The film follows a fictional Molly from her years as a saloon girl to her eventual fame as one of the richest women in the country. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was a hit for MGM, but is not as familiar to modern audiences as some of its glossy contemporaries. Filled with humor and show-stopping numbers, the movie will have you humming ditties like  I ll Never Say No and Belly Up to the Bar, Boys as soon as the credits roll.Watch it if you like: Singin in the Rain, Princess Diaries, The Great Gadsby, Lawless, Funny Girl, My Fair LadyWhere to watch: Stream on TCMWatch app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Man of La Mancha (1972) 50% What is it? A musical biopic about Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, using his most famed literary creation as a plot device. Why you need to see it: It s hard to understand why the film adaptation of The Man from La Mancha starring Peter O Toole and Sophia Loren was not a critical and commercial hit. The original stage production was a smash on Broadway and took home five Tonys, but audiences were none-too-impressed with the film version: It failed to earn back its production budget and Time thought so little of it that the magazine didn t even publish a full review. Most of the problems with the adaptation are a result of its troubled production; a revolving door of directors and a heated debate over whether to make the film a musical at all crippled any effort to do justice to the source material. The dreary costumes, laughable sets, and indifferent cinematography may mar the overall product, but the music remains incredible, and Toole and Loren give it their all despite the challenges. So it s still worth a watch.Watch it if you like: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Don Juan Demarco, Monty Python, and the Holy Grail, The Mask of Zorro, The Three MusketeersWhere to watch: Stream now on HooplaDigital. Playing Carmen, Dandridge made her mark on history, becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Nominated for two Oscars, the film is well-known but not frequently watched. The performances, costumes, and rich Technicolor landscapes make watching the film a truly transformative experience that is almost enough to forgive the choice to dub the voices of famed singers in the production.Watch it if you like: Porgy Bess, Introducing Dorthy Dandridge, Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, Rent, Les MiserablesWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The Wiz (1978) 42% What is it? The Wizard of OZ is remade with a contemporary story, new music, and an all-Black cast. Why you need to see it: As many Twitter users pointed out during NBC s The Wiz Live! in 2015, many movie fans have not seen The Wiz. Beloved in the Black community, the film was a commercial disaster despite starring icons Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne. A modern imagining of Dorothy s trek along the yellow brick road – with music from Quincy Jones and Luther Vandross, direction by Sidney Lumet, and words by Joel Schumacher – the film was one of the most expensive musical productions ever made, and lost million at the box office. The film s popularity never matched its ambition outside of the Black community, where it s still lauded as a cult classic. And it s easy to see why when you watch it today. With some of the most gifted musicians of our time in front of and behind the camera, The Wiz is a soulful crowd pleaser that showcases these artists at the height of their popularity and powers.Watch it if you like: The Wizard of OZ, Oz, The Great and Powerful, Return to Oz, Moonwalker, Idlewild, LabyrinthWhere to watch: Stream now on Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) 67% (Photo by Courtesy of 20th Century Fox)What is it? Chronicles the lives and loves of The Donahues, a family vaudeville act.Why you need to see it: In a way, this is the original jukebox movie musical – all of the songs from There s No Business Like Show Business were previously penned by Irving Berlin for other works. Stacked with stage powerhouses like Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey, as well as film stars like Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O Connor, the film was primarily a vehicle to showcase Marilyn Monroe, who had just married Joe DiMaggio and was one of the biggest names and box office draws in Hollywood. However, with a near two-hour runtime (a rare feat for musicals of that era), audiences found the film to be a little too Broadway and lacking in story. Monroe, who famously only took the role to ensure her casting in The Seven Year Itch, didn t shine in any of her musical numbers and was lambasted by critics. Despite all this, however, There s No Business like Show Business does have some of the most incredible and lavish musical numbers ever committed to screen, and further highlights Berlin s incomparable musical catalog.Watch it if you like: A Chorus Line, Gypsy, Funny Girl, Some Like it Hot, The Greatest ShowmanWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Cover Girl (1944) 95% (Photo by Courtesy of Sony Home Entertainment)What is it? A young chorus girl wins a cover girl contest, is thrust into stardom, and must choose between her career or love. Why you need to see it: Rita Hayworth became one of only a handful of women who had the enviable honor of dancing with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astair on screen with her role in Cover Girl. Dancing alongside Kelly in her first role with top billing, Cover Girl was one of Hayworth s final films before Gilda solidified her as a film icon. Shown briefly in The Shawshank Redemption, Hayworth s iconic entrance and overall performance here was also the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A massive hit at the time, this story of a showgirl-turned-star has been sadly dwarfed in later years by Kelly s and Hayworth s more memorable roles like Singin in the Rain and The Lady From Shanghai, respectively.Watch it if you like: Gilda, Showboat, A Chorus Line, Almost Famous, A Star is Born, RockstarWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Hair (1979) 88% What is it? An anti-war rock musical set within the hippie counter culture. Why you need to see it: Though many will know Hair s catchy opening number  Aquarius, the musical itself is a bit of a lesser-known treasure outside of musical theater obsessives. The first film directed by Milos Forman after his critical and commercial smash One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest, Hair had critics raving about his skill in adapting the controversial and stylized musical. Roger Ebert said of Forman: He brings life to the musical form in the same way that West Side Story did. Still, some contemporaries – including the musical s creators – argued it diluted the musical s anti-war message was diluted on the journey from stage to screen.Watch it if you like: Jesus Christ Superstar, Across the Universe, Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Fear Loathing in Las VegasWhere to watch: Stream now on Hoopla and PrimeVideo. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Google Play, and iTunes.
(Photo by Nicole Wilder/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)Thursday afternoon s portion of the winter Television Critics Association press tour was largely devoted to channels that are part of the AMC Networks, including AMC and BBC America. This brought news of favorite returning series like Killing Eve and Better Call Saul and anticipated new ones like The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Other TV news comes courtesy of HBO s Watchmen, Netflix s Mindhunter, and Peacock, the new streaming service from NBCUniversal.TOP STORYBETTER SAY GOODBYE TO SAULBetter Call Saul  co-creator Peter Gould told journalists during the show s TCA panel that his and Vince Gilligan s Breaking Bad prequel has been renewed for a 13-episode season 6, which will also be the show s last. But before we get to that, AMC still has to air its 10-episode season 5 of Saul, which has a two-night premiere on February 23 and 24 and stars Bob Odenkirk as the increasingly corrupt lawyer. Gould told journalists that he would say this season is more kinetic — to which co-star Jonathan Banks piped up to say violent is the word you re looking for. And while Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will not be in the fifth season of Saul, Gould did confirm that Dean Norris and Steven Michael Quezada will be in episodes three and four this season, reprising their Breaking Bad characters of DEA agents Hank Schrader and Steven Gomez. So will Cranston and Paul ever appear on the show? After all, Paul s Jesse Pinkman did introduce Cranston s Walter White to criminal attorney Saul Goodman.Gould gave the traditional cagey answer that he would love to work with Cranston and Paul again.TIME TO FEAST ON MORE THE WALKING DEAD(Photo by AMC)The brains at AMC have confirmed that the latest series in The Walking Dead franchise, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, will premiere April 12 after the season 10 finale of the original TWD. One of the biggest movie franchises on the planet expands outward with Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw. The spin-off stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as their respectively titular characters from the Fast and the Furious series as they reluctantly team up to take on a superhuman villain played by Idris Elba. What ensues is less a F F movie than a silly superhero action movie, according to its first reviews. You mostly get what you expect, plus a standout Vanessa Kirby and surprise cameos, if you’re just interested in dumb popcorn fare. Here’s what critics are saying about Hobbs Shaw:How does it fit in the Fast Furious franchise? The spin-off film is nigh unrecognizable from the gritty low-level crime days of early Fast and Furious, and even the high-stakes heists of the more recent films.  Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmToo sci-fi for the world of Fast Furious… the bionic stuff is anathema to the franchise’s core, meat-based values.  Richard Lawson, Vanity FairIt’s all a little sci-fi for the Fast Furious franchise, though it’s arguably no more ridiculous than launching parachute-sporting cars out of planes.  James Mottram, Total FilmIt’s a Fast Furious movie that doesn’t really care that it’s a part of the franchise.  Germain Lussier, io9What really stands out from this Fast movie is how little help it needs from the franchise for it to work.  Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderDoes it meet expectations otherwise? It delivers some bangs and laughs for your buck.  Peter Bradshaw, GuardianIf you liked Johnson and Statham’s big jailbreak in Fate of the Furious and thought you’d want to see a whole movie of that duo, then you’re in luck. And it’s as awesome as you’d hoped. Edward Douglas, The BeatIt’s not going to change your life but if you are looking for a silly, over-the-top entertainment with very likable leads than there is more than enough to enjoy here. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netI get it, you, the audience, have bought a ticket for the punches and perhaps the punchlines… But do we not deserve better? J. Don Birnam, Splash Report(Photo by Frank Masi / © Universal)How is the chemistry between Johnson and Statham? The back and forth banter between the two of them is hilariously written, and their deadpan delivery is incredible. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentHobbs Shaw is anchored by excellent comedic chemistry between Johnson and Statham, building on their dynamic from the previous film and ensuring laughs are in ample supply. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewJohnson and Statham do have great chemistry and comedically play off each other well. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThe actors always feel like they’re trying to outdo each other. At times, that chemistry works well, but eventually it gets a little repetitive and numbing. Germain Lussier, io9Simultaneously the best and worst parts of the film are Hobbs and Shaw’s arguments… these scenes start to drag once they’ve been going on for over five minutes straight. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmIs Idris Elba a satisfying villain?Idris Elba as the evil Brixton Lorr is phenomenal. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentElba is truly savage throughout in a could’ve-been-Bond performance of action and brute force. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsElba allures through all that relentless cyborg glint, but he nonetheless feels like an unwelcome visitor from a different franchise. Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)Who really owns the movie? For all the hyper-male puffing, Hobbs Shaw is most memorable for the opportunities it gives to Vanessa Kirby. Donald Clarke, Irish TimesIt’s a pleasure to watch Kirby go from cigarette-addled Princess Margaret on The Crown to this commanding bit of action-heroing. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairI was particularly impressed with Kirby, who holds her own. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netWhat I love about the character is that she doesn’t have to sit around and let the men fight for her… her fight scenes are amazing and prove her range as an actress. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentWhat s all this about cameos? Some of the film’s biggest laughs come courtesy of two scene-stealing cameos that we won’t spoil here. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewHas some great surprises for the audience with a few A+ cameos. Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderThese cameos are a delight to stumble upon, and I would suggest you go in not knowing who you’ll see. It adds to the magic of the film. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe film gets weighed down by its self-indulgent excess and distracting cameos from the cast and crew’s best buddies. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by © Universal)This is all that matters: How is the action? The action scenes are where Hobbs Shaw truly excels. Candice Frederick, The WrapThe action in the film is off the charts. Some scenes are sure to leave your jaw on the floor. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentBoasts a chase sequence — featuring a helicopter, a tow truck, and a group of souped-up hot rods — that’s absolutely bonkers. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewThe early action sequences are impressively choreographed but disappointingly limp, delivering none of the bombast that a Hobbs Shaw movie would promise. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmSomewhere around the midpoint of Hobbs Shaw, the action sequences become so elaborate that they start to weigh the movie down. Stephanie Zacharek, TimeIt’s only in the final third when the fight choreography gets a little too incoherent that you realize you don’t give a damn about anything that’s happening. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comIs Hobbs Shaw too cartoonish even for a Fast Furious movie?Hobbs Shaw checks all the boxes for the rousing, over-the-top ludicrousness you’d expect… [but it] tests the limits of that absurdity. Brian Truitt, USA TodayFrom motorcycles that transform and cars that twist in the air, to jumping off buildings and slow-motion fistfights, the whole movie is a cartoon. Germain Lussier, io9It’s basically a cartoon, a machismo-laden thrill ride that borders on parody and is, at times, unspeakably dumb, but in the best possible way. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewIn Fast   Furious, is there really such a thing as too much? James Mottram, Total Film(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)What s really missing here?Without its own identity, without an interesting hook or resonant emotional through-line, most of the movie feels rather shallow — like it’s trying to impress us instead of engage us. Ghcxuf King of the Crop: Aquaman Leaps To The Surface And Pursues The Clouds(Photo by Warner Bros)Aquaman led the way this weekend, grossing more than the next three films combined. It’s .4 million start was the 9th best ever in December (it made another .7 million with Amazon previews last weekend) and yet was still the weakest opening in the DC Universe to date by some margin. That should be expected given the rejection of Justice League which introduced Jason Momoa’s superhero. That film opened to .4 million and finished with 9 million – itself the weakest gross of the Universe. Aquaman would really have to fail with audiences going forward not to reach that amount. The film’s support with critics dropped as the Tomatometer has fallen to 64% after some initial robust reviews from the junket crowd. Aquaman’s worldwide total has risen to over 2 million.Fresh Surprise: Bumblebee Shocks, But Not At Box Office(Photo by Paramount)There is only one number that earns Bumblebee its slot here and it s certainly not its opening weekend. Bumblebee s million start is less than half of what Transformers: The Last Knight opened to. No, the real impressive number is the Tomatometer score: 94%. The total score of the four Michael Bay Transformers sequels combined is just 88%. That’s four films. (The original received a 57%.) Whether or not Bumblebee can continue to draw family audiences in such a crowded season remains to be seen, but even catching The Last Knight’s 0 million means the 5 million production will be relying on its international draw to turn a profit. None of the live-action Transformers films have grossed less than 0 million worldwide.Rotten Returns: Welcome To Marwen! Hello? Seriously, You Can Come In.(Photo by Universal)In a sad turn of events Robert Zemeckis’ current box office status is looking a lot like the beginning of his career, marked by I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars, before Romancing the Stone and Back to the Future saved him. Countless masterpieces later, the director has fallen on hard times again in ticket sales. Sony opened The Walk wide a week after The Martian. It grossed .7 million and finished with just .1m. Allied was an million production that Brad Pitt did no press for as he was in the middle of his domestic issues with Angelina Jolie. It ended up making just million domestic. This weekend, Universal opened Welcome to Marwen and it, unfortunately, reached new lows for Zemeckis. The film opened in just 1,911 theaters but a ,234 per-theater-average is weak for any release. Critically it is the worst-reviewed film of his career by a margin; What Lies Beneath received a 46%. That is just the fifth rotten score ever for Zemeckis, but the opening was even worse than The Walk with just a .3 million tally. 😈😈

ought about it as much because they re watching and I m looking at them watching it. I m probably making something in the kitchen for them going in and out. So, when I watched it again the other day by myself – laughing out loud by myself, too – I thought the same thing. I was so impressed with it and I had just forgotten how elaborate that opening sequence is. They do such a great job.Rotten Tomatoes: So, when you were taking on this role, what did you want to bring to this new Boss Baby, Tina, that we meet in Family Business?Sedaris: Well, the tremendous amount of energy it took to play Tina! She s up, she talks fast, she s bossy. It was a lot. She s running around the room and… It s exhausting. It can be exhausting, and I can put out a lot of energy, but this one really wiped me out, to play a little bit of a bub. But I love anyone who wears a little suit or a little uniform. And, I just felt like I knew Tina. I was a lot like Tina when I was little. So, I could kind of really relate to Tina.Rotten Tomatoes: Well, I was going to say, we know a little bit about your family growing up thanks to your brother David’s writings. Who was the Boss Baby in the Sedaris household?Sedaris: The oldest sister s always the boss, right? Always – still to this day. You just roll your eyes. Everyone has their little positions. I was in the middle, so I kind of got along with both sides, the three above me and the two underneath me. But I was the boss of the two underneath me. With a family it s split. So, I got a shot at being boss as well.Rotten Tomatoes: You got to be the Tina.Sedaris: I got to be Tina. Yeah.(Photo by © Universal )

ag九游会登录 (Photo by Fox Searchlight / courtesy Everett Collection)20 Movies To Watch If You Loved Jojo RabbitWhen director Taika Waititi isn t busy making Thor the funniest character in the MCU, he takes the time to stay true to his quirky indie roots, releasing movies like Jojo Rabbit. It s about a young Nazi boy with an imaginary Hitler friend, whose mother is hiding a Jewish teenaged girl in their home. It s also up for Best Picture in this year s Oscars race.It s a high-wire act mining jokes out of World War II, and when the film came out there were immediate and mostly favorable comparisons to Jojo s forebears like Charlie Chaplin s The Great Dictator, To Be or Not to Be, Life Is Beautiful, and the original The Producers. And speaking of Mel Brooks, he lends his wisdom for documentary The Last Laugh, which explores the boundaries of humor in the face of human horror and catastrophe. Meanwhile, Train of Life is just as funny as any of the movies mentioned so far, and remains criminally underseen.Using a child s perspective to explore the origins and horrors of World War II is an evocative yet risky technique. If successful, it creates empathy in the viewer. When it fails, critics and audiences will deem it exploitative. Come and See is arguably the most memorable of this type of film, but be warned it is not a comedy and will mess you up. It s also a masterpiece. Forbidden Games and Au Revoir Les Enfants are gentler classics, and just about as affecting and powerful. If you re not a blubbering mess by the end of those and want even more World War II movies from kids point of views, try The Tin Drum, The Diary of Anne Frank, or The Boy In the Striped Pajamas.Beyond World War II, there have been a lot of great films as seen through the eyes of youth that unearth truths for people across all ages. Peter Brook s adaptation of The Lord of the Flies explores how authoritarian tendencies develop organically when left unchecked. Pan s Labyrinth uses fantasy to help a young girl engage with and escape the darkness of reality. Beasts of the Southern Wild, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Florida Project all use the power of imagination to create better worlds for their young heroes. And if you re just looking for a rousing adventure of young lovers on the run (and also in scouting uniforms), see Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. Waititi shares the same comedic sensibility and timing as Anderson, as seen in Jojo Rabbit and his earlier efforts, Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
