With twinkling eyes, dimples, and an earnest, Oklahoma-bred “aw shucks” demeanor, James Marsden has a knack for finding roles that frequently fall into one of two categories: Is he the sweet guy, and safe bet, for leading ladies like he was in HBO’s Westworld, NBC’s 30 Rock, the X-Men movies, or the rom-com 27 Dresses? Or is he the evil one with nefarious motives like in Hulu’s Mrs. America, Netflix’s Dead to Me, and – yes – maybe also, 27 Dresses? These themes hit a crescendo with Marsden’s latest role in limited series, The Stand. Based on the popular Stephen King novel, the star-studded CBS All Access program focuses on the few survivors of flu-like pandemic that swiftly wiped out most of the world’s population. Will those remaining choose the path of good? Led by Whoopi Goldberg’s nurturing 108-year-old Mother Abagail, this flock sticks to their dwellings in Boulder, Colorado. Or will they decide to stand with Randall Flagg, Alexander Skarsgard’s alluring and intoxicating “Dark Man” who has staked his claim on the remains of Las Vegas? So where does Marsden’s Stu Redman stand? Although the widower and ex-Marine actually had an encounter with a patient zero of the pandemic before it went airborne, he’s somehow mysteriously immune to the virus. He has the strength and smarts to escape a military-grade holding cell and fend for himself. But he also dreams of Mother Abagail calling him toward her compound – one of the few residents who actually has this honor and who is therefore one of the people made a leader of the survivors.(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS )Before the pandemic hit, it did not seem like Stu was planning on setting up a moral code for him and others to live or die by. And yet, here he is.The fact that Stu is “a simple guy who s caught up in an apocalyptic crisis and trying to navigate his way through it” is exactly what interested Marsden.“There were elements that I liked, in that he was this sort of reluctant hero; a very ordinary man and simple guy who doesn t really talk much, but just listens more than he talks,” Marsden told Rotten Tomatoes while speaking via Zoom from his home in Austin, Texas. He happens to be dressed in a very Stu-like ensemble of a buttoned red-and-black plaid shirt and, as is the social contract many of us are making as a result of the current real-life health advisory, a slightly outgrown haircut.Marsden added that, when his character does talk, “he doubles down on it and really has a sense of purpose behind it.”Even though he played mutant Scott Summers/Cyclops in three X-Men movies, Marsden said he’s not really attracted to roles about “superheroes with superpowers, rather he is interested in “heroes that emerge from these ordinary people,” because “I feel like we need to celebrate those kind of people more.”(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved.)An avowed fan of King’s novels, Marsden also likes that The Stand is “your classic story of good versus evil” but also one that asks “what happens when we hit the reset button and we have to start over? What does that look like? And who do we become who we choose to be?”It’s also a series in which Marsden plays a character stuck – albeit unknowingly – in a love triangle. This is also a frequent Marsden trope (see some of the titles listed above or this GQ profile on the matter). In The Stand, the other two points of that equation belong to Frannie Goldsmith, Odessa Young’s survivor from Ogunquit, Maine who has also traveled to Boulder after sensing Mother Abagail, and Owen Teague’s Harold Lauder – the awkward teen-aged younger brother of a friend of Frannie’s. He has always pined for her, but he, frankly, doesn’t stand a chance.Marsden laughed when we pointed this out, saying he never thought about it like this before and that “if I m not in a love triangle, my career is gonna be over.” He promises that he doesn’t intentionally type-cast himself like this and that “thank God I don t seek that stuff out.”(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved.)There’s also no avoiding the fact that this is a miniseries about the survivors of a pandemic that is airing during an actual pandemic. Marsden actually wrapped shooting The Stand on March 12 and remembers hurriedly packing his apartment in Vancouver, B.C., and rushing to the airport to get home before any shutdowns went into effect.“I guess you could argue both sides; is it the right time for this or a wrong time for this?” Marsden said in regards to whether the streaming channel should have shelved the project at least for a few more months. He added that, “But, I think, at the end of the day, everyone s supremely sensitive to the material and what story we re telling here.”This also brings up a larger, philosophical conversation: If The Stand is about the lucky few who were able to survive a sudden outbreak, how fortunate does Marsden feel that he gets to have a career like this and play this part? Or that he gets to be healthy right now?“Stephen King doesn t shy away from this idea of leaning into the idea of having questions that aren t necessarily answered,” Marsden said. “That s a testament to his bravery and his courage in his storytelling; this diminishes the idea if I were to provide a clear-cut answer to this.”(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS)There were often questions on set of why these characters were put in these situations, he said, and it was decided that “let’s play it like we don’t know why, but we have to.”As an actor, he said “I can look back and look at choices that I made, and risks that I took. But to be frank, when I started, there wasn t there wasn t any other option.”Call it naivety or just youthful cockiness, he said, but “sometimes there are other forces at play.”“I don’t want to get hocus pocus-y, but I like to believe that there are reasons behind things even if you can’t explain them,” Marsden said. It’s just a matter of what side you stand on when you’re given these choices. The Stand premieres on Thursday, December 17 on CBS All Access. On an Apple device? 3. 激战团竞模式
(Photo by Jackson Lee Davis/AMC)Despite leading a show like The Walking Dead, in which any character can die at any time, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) has survived for nine years. But now that Lincoln has left the show — and will star in his own series of The Walking Dead movies — Daryl (Norman Reedus) is stepping up and a whole new crew of survivors is populating the post-apocalyptic world. An older, Walker-wise Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming) and new characters Magna (Nadia Hilker), Yamiko (Eleanor Matsuura), Connie (Lauren Ridloff), Kelly (Angel Theory), and Luke (Dan Fogler) are among the new blood the series has brought in to fill TWD s Rick Grimes–shaped void. The Walking Dead is only the latest show that has had to move on in the wake of a major cast member departure. Throughout TV history, shows have dealt with losing their stars for various reasons — and in some cases the shows grew stronger with the new cast. Not all benefitted from a cast swap, however — there are certainly some duds on Rotten Tomatoes list of the most famous television replacements. Read on to find out who was replaced and why, along with how their departure was explained on screen.22. Beverly Hills, 90210 (Photo by ©Aaron Spelling Prod./Courtesy Everett Collection; Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty, pictured right)The Replacement: Valerie Malone (Tiffani Amber Thiessen, pictured left)The Reason: In 2015 Tori Spelling revealed that she eventually made a call to her father, producer Aaron Spelling, asking him to fire Doherty over her conflicts with the cast and crew. The Explanation: Brenda left for drama school in London. Valerie Malone, a bad girl from Minnesota, came to live with the Walshes for seasons 5 through 10 of 90210. In 1994, Thiessen told press on the set she thought she was cast because “they heard I had a reputation for being easy to work with.”21. Charmed (Photo by ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Prue Halliwell (Doherty)The Replacement: Paige (Rose McGowan)The Reason: According to the New York Daily News, Alyssa Milano gave producers of the original WB show (not to be confused with the 2018 reboot) an ultimatum: It was either her or Doherty. The show’s producers said Doherty wanted to leave, and they let her.The Explanation: Prue is killed by demons, and, shortly thereafter, the Halliwells discover a long-lost fourth sister, Paige, who ended up sticking around from season 4 through the show s remaining eight seasons. There s no bad blood on McGowan s part, however: The actress wrote to Doherty via Instagram when Doherty underwent cancer treatment: “The men brainwashed women in our business made it so we couldn t be friends. I regret that.”20. Baywatch (Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: C.J. Parker (Pamela Anderson, pictured)The Replacements: Donna Marco (Donna D’Errico) and Lani McKenzie (Carmen Electra)The Reason: Anderson left Baywatch to focus on being a mother. The Explanation: C.J. Parker got married off the show, and it took two new lifeguards to fill her sandy footprints. While Carmen Electra told Esquire, “I don’t think I was hired as a replacement,” costar Kelly Packard recalled auditions for “a room of Pamela Anderson–looking women” and Traci Bingham said Donna “thought she was Pamela.” Electra was only on the series for one season and D’Errico for two, but the casting proved that a rotating roster of lifeguards could survive long into syndication.19. Anger Management 23%(Photo by FX)Outgoing Character: Kate Wales (Selma Blair)The Replacement: Dr. Jordan Denby (Laura Bell Bundy, pictured)The Reason: TMZ reported that Blair complained to the producers about Sheen’s unprofessional behavior, and Sheen demanded she be fired. Sheen told Jay Leno that Blair was written out because viewers expected the show to be about their relationship. The Explanation: Charlie Goodson (Sheen) stopped seeing Kate for anger management therapy, but went into business with Dr. Denby. Reviews for Anger Management were never all that Fresh (season 1 has a 23% score on 35 reviews), so the switch didn’t seem to change much on the series — except perhaps, given season 2 s three meager reviews, that most critics stopped paying attention.18. Lethal Weapon 89%(Photo by Fox)Outgoing Character: Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford)The Replacement: Wesley Cole (Sean William Scott, pictured)The Reason: Warner Brothers fired Crawford for abusive behavior, which Crawford insisted was only in response to difficulties with costar Damon Wayans. The Explanation: The character of Riggs survived four films and a perma-rumored fifth, but on TV he was shot and killed. Scott told EW, “For a lot of fans that are upset that they’re not going to see Riggs, which I totally understand, I really believe they’re going to feel ‘OK, they handled it in a way that’s really respectful to that character and what he means to the show.’”17. Criminal Minds (Photo by CBS)Outgoing Character: Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin)The Replacement: David Rossi (Joe Mantegna, pictured)The Reason: Patinkin said that the violent subject matter of the murder-centric series was “destructive to my soul.”The Explanation: Mirroring Patinkin s own experience, Gideon also left the Behavioral Analysis Unit due to emotional distress. His former partner Rossi has filled in ever since and continues to lead the show in its 14th season.16. Chicago Hope (Photo by CBS)Outgoing Character: Dr. Jeffrey Geiger (Mandy Patinkin)The Replacement: Dr. Kate Austin (Christine Lahti, pictured)The Reason: Patinkin wanted to be with his family in New York, while Hope filmed in Los Angeles. The Explanation: Geiger resigned after he couldn’t save Alan Birch (Peter MacNicol) from a gunshot wound, although the show insisted Dr. Austin was not replacing him. Unlike Criminal Minds, Patinkin did return for guest appearances on Chicago Hope.15. Nashville 91%(Photo by CMT)The Character: Rayna James (Connie Britton)The Replacements: Alyssa Greene (Rachel Bilson, pictured) and Jessie Craine (Kaitlin Doubleday)The Reason: When the series was canceled by ABC and moved to CMT, Britton decided to leave the show, working with the writers to give Rayna a dramatic finale. The Explanation: Rayna died in the hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Doubleday s singer/songwriter Jessie Craine and Bilson s Highway 65 record label exec Alyssa Greene joined the cast in the series fifth season, with Bilson leaving at the end of that season and Doubleday staying on through the sixth and final year.Doubleday prepared for the worst when she entered the show, she told The Boot: “If everyone hates me, it doesn’t matter. It’s a paycheck. I’ve felt pretty at home since the day I got here.”Interestingly, Britton left 9-1-1 after only one season, and Jennifer Love Hewitt stepped in as a new call center operator. She also appeared in only the first of eight seasons of Ryan Murphy s American Horror Story anthology series, while other stars from season 1, like Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Jessica Lange, formed something like a troupe and continued with the show.14. CHARLIE’S ANGELS(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett, pictured left)The Replacement: Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd, pictured right)The Reason: When Fawcett left the show, she said it was because it prevented her from growing as an actor. Producer Aaron Spelling sued her for million. The Explanation: Jill resigned from the Angels to become a race-car driver, and — wouldn’t you know it? — she also has a sister named Kris who s fresh out of the police academy. Ratings held steady enough with Ladd, but dwindled when other new Angels started to rotate in during the final seasons, including Shelly Hack replacing Kate Jackson, and then Tanya Roberts replacing Hack.13. Beauty and the Beast (Photo by ©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Catherine (Linda Hamilton, pictured)The Replacement: Diana (Jo Anderson)The Reason: Hamilton left the series, which ran from 1987 to 1990, when she was pregnant. The Explanation: Catherine was killed, leaving her love, Vincent (Ron Perlman), heartbroken. Diana offered a potential new love interest, but many fans felt the magic left with Hamilton. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote for the show and told THR, You can’t do two seasons of telling the world, This is a love story for the ages, this is Romeo and Juliet, and then suddenly third seasons say, Juliet? Forget Juliet. It’s Romeo and Harriet.' 12. THE HOGAN FAMILY(Photo by ©Lorimar/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Valerie Hogan (Valerie Harper, pictured)The Replacement: Sandy Hogan (Sandy Duncan)The Reason: Wrongful termination, as Harper was vindicated in court. The Explanation: You would think star Valerie Harper would be safe playing Valerie Hogan on a show called Valerie, but Valerie Hogan died in an automobile accident. Michael Hogan’s (Josh Taylor) sister Sandy came to live with Valerie’s Family, later renamed (again) The Hogan Family. At the time, Duncan told UPI she didn’t know there was any controversy: “The story I got before I agreed to do the show was that Valerie had left the series. Valerie and I have known each other for years. And while we were never friends, we were friendly. And I m relieved to know she has told people the dispute is not my problem. I refuse to be on the hot seat.”Despite Harper’s victory, the show lasted four more seasons, including one on CBS, without her.11. M*A*S*H (Photo by ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson)The Replacement: Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan, pictured)The Reason: NBC promised Stevenson more money, but subsequent shows bombed and Stevenson regretted leaving M*A*S*H after just three seasons. The Explanation: Blake was tragically shot down while returning home. Sherman Potter joined the M.A.S.H. unit for the rest of its eight seasons, and its spinoff AfterMASH. Morgan had impressed the producers when he guest-starred as a different character in the third season premiere.10. Three's Company (Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers, pictured)The Replacement: Cindy Snow (Jenilee Harrison)The Reason: Somers got fired for asking for pay equal to John Ritter in the fifth season. The Explanation: Chrissy also had a sister we’d never met before. The show went on for eight total seasons and a spinoff, Three’s a Crowd.9. Spin City 67%Outgoing Character: Mike Flaherty (Michael J. Fox)The Replacement: Charlie Crawford (Charlie Sheen)The Reason: Fox’s real-life battle with Parkinson’s.The Explanation: Mike became an environmental lobbyist for senator Alex P. Keaton (if only we’d gotten a scene of them together!), and Mayor Winston (Barry Bostwick) got a new deputy, Charlie Crawford (Sheen). Sheen earned the show a younger audience, according to The New York Times. Sheen told the paper, “I’m just glad people are responding. I can’t comment on what they’re responding to.” Spin City went two more seasons and Fox returned as a guest star.8. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit 78%(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Det. Elliot Stabler (Meloni, pictured)The Replacement: Det. Nick Amaro (Pino)The Reason: Meloni and NBC couldn’t come to terms on a new contract. The Explanation: Stabler retired, so Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) needed a new partner. Nick Amaro was that partner, and stayed on the job for four seasons. SVU has made it to 20 seasons, matching the original Law Order.7. Law & Order (Photo by NBC)Outgoing Character: DA Benjamin Stone (Michael Moriarty)The Replacement: DA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston, pictured)The Reason: Moriarty claimed he was forced out for speaking out against a meeting Janet Reno had with NBC, believing the Attorney General would impose restrictive laws on television. The Explanation: Stone resigned and McCoy took over. Now it’s hard to imagine the show without Sam Waterston as DA Jack McCoy, and he’s who you’re most likely to see in a syndicated rerun. In 1995, Waterston was on speaking terms with Moriarty. “I have nothing to say about his reasons for leaving,” Waterston told The New York Times. “But I’ve talked to him since, and I think we’re OK.”6. 8 Simple Rules 58%(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Paul Hennessy (Ritter, pictured)The Replacements: Jim Egan (James Garner) and C.J. Barnes (David Spade)The Reason: Ritter’s sudden death at the age of 54.The Explanation: In the aftermath of Ritter s (and his character s) death, the show added Garner as widow Cate s (Katey Sagal) father, and then Spade as her nephew who came to live with them. The show completed three seasons with the new cast.5. ER (Photo by ©NBC/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Doug Ross (George Clooney, pictured)The Replacement: Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic)The Reason: Clooney fulfilled his five-year contract with ER, even as he ascended to movie stardom. The Explanation: Ross moved to Seattle after a dispute over being caught helping a mother euthanize her terminal son. The next year, Luka Kovac joined the E.R. an attending physician. Luka even dated Ross love, Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) until the two reunited (with a surprise Clooney cameo) when Margulies left the show too. The series ran for 10 more years, ending after its 15th season (during which Clooney and several other cast members returned).4. NYPD Blue 83%(Photo by ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Det. John Kelley (David Caruso)The Replacement: Det. Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits, pictured right)The Reason: Caruso got a taste of the movie business and asked for a raise that NYPD Blue brass didn t agree to — especially after only one season. The Explanation: Internal Affairs pushed Kelly off the force, and Simone became Sipowicz s (Dennis Franz) new partner. Eventually, Rick Schroder joined the cast as well. Once Caruso was on CSI: Miami, he admitted he made a mistake leaving NPYD Blue. The modest Smits wouldn’t take credit for the ratings bump after he joined the show. “I don’t think I solely am responsible for that,” Smits told SF Gate in 1995. “But the people at the network are happy.”3. The X-Files 74%(Photo by Shane Harvey/FOX)Outgoing Character: Fox Mulder (David Duchovny, pictured)The Replacement: John Doggett (Robert Patrick)The Reason: Duchovny’s contract was up after seven years, and he was also suing Fox for syndication earnings. He would later return full-time in the 10th season. The Explanation: Mulder got abducted by aliens, of course. Agent Doggett became Scully s (Gillian Anderson) new partner, but without the seven years of rapport and back story, Patrick s Dogett just didn t have the same spark. Some critics, however, are reconsidering his seasons. In 2017, Patrick told People TV he knew the fans weren’t interested in him at first, but “we won ’em over and we got two seasons out of it.” It worked out for X-Files fans, though: Duchovny and Anderson starred in two feature films and then two additional seasons over a decade later.2. Two and a Half Men 65%(Photo by CBS)Outgoing Character: Charlie Harper (Sheen)The Replacement: Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher, pictured)The Reason: Sheen’s public meltdown and lashing out against creator Chuck Lorre. The Explanation: Charlie was murdered by an ex, and the heartbroken billionaire Walden Schmidt took over his share of the rent. Kutcher said after his arrival that he drew a younger and more international audience to the show.“The demos for the show have actually started to skew a little bit younger,” Kutcher said in 2012 after half a season. “I can see a reflection of that on on the social media surfaces. You can actually see the international markets that are going to pop with the show. I think we just opened in Germany this week, and it was double.”Even Angus T. Jones (the titular half-man) left the show for a while after disparaging it publicly. Two and a Half Men was always critic-proof, so it lasted four more years with Walden Schmidt.1. Cheers 87%(Photo by ©Paramount Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Diane Chambers (Shelley Long, pictured left)The Replacement: Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley, pictured right)The Reason: Long wanted to pursue a movie career and left after five seasons. The Explanation: When Diane left Sam Malone (Ted Danson) before their wedding, he sold the bar to a corporation that put Rebecca Howe in charge, making her Sam’s new romantic foil. It worked. Cheers ran for 11 years total and Alley is arguably even more closely identified with it than Long. The show previously had to fill a void when Nicholas Colosanto died during the third season, which is when Woody Harrelson joined the series.Did we leave out your favorite replacement? Tell us in the comments.

2.37.7 7月喜迎Best-Reviewed Kids Family Movies 2020Parents were desperate to find movies to entertain the stuck-at-home kids in 2020, and Hollywood delivered. Unsurprisingly, Disney+ dominates the top 10 Kids and Family Movies of the last year, with five entries here – among them the inspiring sports drama Safety and chatty-animals flick The One and Only Ivan. But it’s Netflix’s Christmas musical, Jingle Jangle, that comes out on top, with its catchy songs, showstopping numbers, elaborate production design, and heartfelt performances winning over even the Grinchiest of critics. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of February 28, 2021. Scores might change over time.« Previous Category Next Category »
At the center of it all is Zendaya’s (Spider-Man: Far from Home) Rue, a 17-year-old drug addict who, as we learn in the program s pilot, suffered an overdose and was only saved because her younger sister found her in time. Rue s drug problem goes deep, and it s a perspective of addiction that TV hasn t really explored much. It s been nearly 18 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks inflicted a deep wound into the fabric of America, but while we tend to focus mainly on the political aftermath and various military actions we ve been involved in since, not much attention has been given to the generation who grew up in this new reality.Stories following teens who are disconnected from their parental adult counterparts are nothing at all new, but positing Rue s introduction to the world with the fall of the Twin Towers playing out in the background helps to supply subtext to the challenges her and other young people have had laid out before them. And as her emotional issues begin to form, her parents are quick to have any and every diagnosis handed her way until she s juggling multiple medical fixes for multiple anxiety disorders — none of which are really proven to be sound diagnoses to begin with.Debbie DayInstead of handling the underlying problem, well-intentioned adults teach young Rue that the best way to cure what ails her is to treat her symptoms. As her relationship with her mother becomes fractured, and her father falls victim to cancer, it was shown as an inevitability that she d eventually graduate from medically-assigned prescriptions to her own experiments in self-medicating — all just to find the happiness that has, somehow, eluded her this entire time. There are other characters featured in the show, and yes, we re about to get to them. But it s necessary that we really explore Rue s struggles and motivations because, not only is Zendaya the lead of the show, her performance is the program s backbone. She is the ongoing narrator, walking us through the misadventures of her peers, giving us a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the bigger picture, as the series begins to unfold. And as Rue even admits, she s not the most reliable narrator. You know, because she s always high.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)She may be out of rehab, but Rue s not at all into staying sober. As she s integrated back into high school life, we re introduced to a handful of her peers, all carrying around their own potentially traumatic baggage. Transgender teen Jules (Hunter Schafer) finds a version of solace in random sexual encounters with older men — except maybe it’s a form of self-harm — while high school jock Nate (Jacob Elordi) has extreme anger issues, leading him to extreme acts of violence. In episode 2, we learn that his flashy flavor of toxic masculinity is indeed masking some deep-seated sexual insecurities, all brought on at a young age after he discovers explicit videos of his father s secret homosexual escapades. Mix in the sordid connection that the older man Jules hooked up with is actually Nate s dad Cal (Eric Dane) and the show really takes shape into something even Bret Easton Ellis would envy. Then there s Kat (Barby Ferreira), the nerdy girl who loses her virginity on a drunken dare at a house party. From the initial shame brought on by discovering that her sexual awakening was caught on video, and distributed across the school — even prompting a brief body-shaming interlude with the school principal — she quickly learns of the connective power of sex and the internet. For the first time in her life, she s the object of desire and that discovery changes her entire life.(Photo by HBO)Euphoria is a show that is out to press people s buttons. Cut from the same unsettling cloth as angsty teen movies like Harmony Korine s Gummo and Larry Clark s Kids, Levinson — who has gone on the record about tapping into his own history with drug abuse to write this story — gives us a program that sounds a warning siren about the dangers teens continue to face in the real and online realms, especially for complacent parents everywhere, who are alerted to get involved in their kids lives and pay attention. The series features adults, but when they make their appearance, their roles are mostly presented as background fodder. Euphoria actually has a lot in common with the 2014 indie horror hit It Follows; the parents aren t really in the picture, the overall environment has an inescapable muted quality of a suburban purgatory, and the teens in both that film and this TV series are stalked by their own demons — of course, the ones in the HBO series aren t STD zombies out to commit post-coitus murder. But we digress.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)All this said, there are definitely gripes with the show s tone and subject matter. Levinson has both writing and directing credits here, but at times it does feel as if his vision is a bit disconnected from the 2019 reality these kids are living in.Writing in The New York Times this weekend, health care correspondent Margot Sanger-Katz and Indiana University School of Medicine professor of pediatrics Aaron E. Carroll observed: HBO’s new series Euphoria portrays a youth bacchanal that’s a stretch even for Hollywood. The show suggests that our modern society, with its smartphone dating apps, internet pornography and designer drugs, has made teenage life more extreme and dangerous than ever before. Actually, nearly the opposite is true. Many of the problems these teens face, though, tend to be of the eternal variety, because, really, the trials and tribulations of disaffected youth will always be a thing. Rue s Hunter S. Thompson–style recollections inject an oddly engaging Fear and Loathing quality, giving Euphoria a pointed and visually stunning perspective.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)Rue knows drugs are bad. But her self-hatred runs deep. This drive to be happy, along with her predisposition to despise herself, sets the foundation for the polarizing nature of the whole show. While it may be difficult for many of Euphoria s adult audience to completely relate to her struggles — and that of Jules, Nate, Kat, and the rest — certain visceral elements punch their way through the veil, reminding us of bullies from the past, of the suffocating pressures of adolescent life, of the burdening weight of societal expectations, and the primal need to be loved and accepted that drives each and every one of us to move on, if not exactly forward.Like this? SAG Awards 2020 Red Carpet Arrivals See all the stars, celebrities, and artists who showed up on one of the biggest nights in Hollywood! by RT Staff | January 19, 2020 | Comments
As the series end to Arrow looms, the characters in the Arrowverse, as well as the program s huge fanbase, were dealt an emotional blow when Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) sacrificed his life to save all of humanity. Oliver may have perished several times throughout the series, but his death in the recent crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, proved to be his final bow. But all is not lost, though. The show s penultimate episode, titled Green Arrow and the Canaries, not only explores this loss through his daughter, Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara), it ll also act as the backdoor pilot for CW s new superhero series of the same name. Before his death, Oliver passed the vigilante mantle to Mia, naming her the new Green Arrow. With the title, comes a cool new suit, which is all pretty awesome, considering the conflicted relationship Mia had with her father throughout the past two seasons. This is where things get sticky, though. When Oliver Queen saved the world, he created a new Earth-Prime timeline. And in the process, Mia s memories of her dad and this whole debacle were erased.

(Photo by Warner Bros./ courtesy Everett Collection)All 8 Zack Snyder Movies, Ranked by TomatometerDirector Zack Snyder was among the frontlines in the battle to bring back the zombie, his 2004 Certified Fresh remake of Dawn of the Dead nestling in snugly with the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Land of the Dead. But it was with his second feature that he developed a signature style: 300, combining a comic-book palette with unflinching machismo and fetishistic style. The adaptation of the Frank Miller comic was a pop-culture phenomenon, and helped establish the gritty Warner Bros. look on comic-book movies that started with V for Vendetta and was furthered by The Dark Knight. There was no stopping Snyder now, as he next tackled Watchmen, once thought a graphic novel too dense and troubling for film. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga Hoole and Sucker Punch were stepping stones into the world most know Snyder for: As the creative guide behind Superman movies, and the DC Extended Universe beyond. Man of Steel was a big enough box office hit for the studio, and if audiences had some qualms about the direction of the character, their curiosity was nonetheless piqued for the next movie. That would, of course, end up being the biggest title bout of comicdom: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ben Affleck put on the suit, the first to do so after Christian Bale in his Dark Knight trilogy run, and went mano-a-mano with Henry Cavill. A single word may have put this quarrel between two mama s boys to bed, which opened the path to the next movie referred to in BvS s subtitle. Justice League arrived, pulling in Gal Gadot, who would go on to make the Certified Fresh Wonder Woman, and introducing the new movie versions of The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Justice League s disappointing Tomatometer and box office have made Release the Snyder cut! a clarion call for the online hordes, referring to the supposed three-hour version of the movie that existed  before studio executives and meddling forced it down to its current 120-minute runtime.Snyder has since lessened his presence within the DCEU (he s still a producer on Wonder Woman 1984), and is returning to where it all began with Army of the Dead, an upcoming Netflix movie starring Dave Bautista about mercenaries who pull off a heist in Vegas during a zombie outbreak. And now, we re pulling a heist ourselves as we sneak into the past and bringing up every Zack Snyder movie ranked by Tomatometer!

亚博下载地址 Christopher Nolan stuck to his guns and insisted that Tenet would play in theaters, and Warner Bros. had a hell of a time trying to figure out the best way to respect Nolan s wishes. Disney s live-action remake of Mulan, however, chose not to follow suit, opting instead to premiere on the Disney+ streaming service for a premium fee. This is, of course, the latest in the Mouse House s efforts to reimagine some of their most beloved animated classics as live-action films, and unlike some of their recent attempts, Mulan is impressing the critics so far. Liu Yifei stars in the title role as a young woman who dresses as a man in order to represent her family in the Chinese imperial army, and the reviews say she offers a charismatic performance that holds the film together. They also say the action choreography is fantastic, the visuals are stunning, and the choice to eschew the original film s musical elements in favor of a more grounded action-drama results in a more mature film. The youngest viewers may not find Niki Caro s film as compelling, but you can always throw on the colorful animated original for them.Available on Disney+ for .99 on September 4; available to all Disney+ subscribers on December 4.
