But late in the trailer, the familiar laugh of Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) can be heard, suggesting the “great evil” Abrams teased during the panel presentation will indeed be the original Sith architect of the Empire, tying the first episode back into the ninth.McDiarmid made a brief appearance on the Celebration stage to simply say “roll it again” for an appreciative crowd.But the sense that no one is gone also informed the shots of Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. As previously reported, Abrams used material from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi to keep her alive in the story. “Emotionally, everyday, it hits me that she isn’t here, but we’re still working with her every day,” he said. “She is there in these scenes — in some scenes with Billie [Lourd], her daughter. Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is mind-blowing to me.”Luke s Lightsaber Lives(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Prior to rolling the teaser, Ridley was asked about the status of the Skywalker lightsaber seemingly destroyed at the conclusion of The Last Jedi. “My answer is not the end of the story,” she said. “But the lightsaber Rey inherited from Luke lives.”This proved to be true in the teaser, with Rey igniting the laser sword shortly before Kylo’s TIE fighter reaches her on an unidentified desert planet. While the saber may not be a Star Wars: Episode I — Phantom Menace detail — Anankin (Jake Lloyd) was far too young in that film to construct it — it is one of the longest standing icons of the entire series. And while broken in the last film, its appearance here is, ultimately, appropriate.There Will Be Worlds Both Strange and Familiar(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)So let’s talk about that desert planet for a moment. Star Wars loves its deserts. Despite Luke telling C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) that Tatooine is the planet furthest from the bright center of the universe, it is a shockingly important world in terms of galactic history during the Skywalker Era. It remains to be seen if the desert planet in the teaser is Tatoonie, Jakku, or yet another desert planet, but considering that environment’s prevalence in the Skywalker Saga, it has to be a key element of The Rise of Skywalker.But it is not the only biome one can expect to see in the film. In the teaser, we get brief shots of an icy, mountain world, a dying forest bathed in red sunlight, and even a return to the Yavin star system. During the panel, Abrams also revealed a photo featuring the Millennium Falcon and many of the characters in a jungle environment. Abrams called the film an “an epic space adventure on many worlds,” and it would appear to be true. But will the Falcon crew hop to as many worlds as the Rogue One group? Time, of course, will tell.Lando Pilots the Falcon Again(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Perhaps one of the most emotional shots in the teaser for Star Wars old-timers is the glimpse of Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) at the controls of the Millennium Falcon. As it happens, Lando is even back in his yellow-and-blue shirt from the Solo: A Star Wars Story era, recalling the circumstances under which he lost the ship in the first place. It’s a good look on Williams, who also appeared on stage with the cast. “I didn’t expect to be in this new adventure, but I got lucky,” he said when asked about returning to the role. “I regard this as a real highlight.”But he, of course, defended the scoundrel’s actions in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when Colbert asked him about selling out the rebels to Darth Vader. “I get sick and tired of being accused of betraying Han Solo,” he joked. “He had to figure something out! Did anybody die?” he continued, pausing only as the crowd applauded. “I had to figure out a way to prevent the complete demise of my friend and his friends.”Of course, it remains to be seen if Lando will prevent any more deaths with his return to the series. But based on the character’s excitement to be back in the saddle — presumably for the first time since his Star Wars: Return of the Jedi run on the second Death Star — we can’t wait to see what he does with the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.BB-8 Has A Cute New Droid Pal(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)“BB-8 has a new friend,” said Abrams shortly before rolling the teaser. A new, even smaller droid wandered onto stage. “His name is D-O,” said the director. Looking like a tricycle wheel with a shuttlecock affixed at the top, he immediately elicited sounds of what we can only call “affection” from the crowd in attendance. He appears briefly in the teaser alongside BB-8, but both the preview and the director were mum on his ultimate role in the saga’s final chapter. Like BB-8 and the porgs before him, expect D-O to be your favorite new cute Star Wars character. Provided you enjoy cuteness in your Star Wars, that is.For those that do not — which is equally valid — the teaser also offers a brief glimpse of Kylo Ren’s helmet being reforged. Rumors persist that the long-teased Knights of Ren will finally make their debut in this story. And if they are aligned with the great evil of Palpatine, expect a certain darkness worthy of concluding Star Wars. Funny they all feature McDiarmid’s characteristic laugh.We See the Remains of the Death Star(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Another iconic Star Wars element resurfaces in the teaser in the form of Death Star wreckage Rey, Finn (John Boyega) and the others spy in the distance. Considering the terrain, we’re assuming the piece of the infamous battle station landed on one of the planets in the Yavin system, if not the moon of Yavin IV where the rebels maintained their secret base in the original Star Wars, Rogue One, and the final season of Star Wars Rebels.The image evokes both the original film and the haunting image of a smashed Star Destroyer in the Force Awakens teaser. Of course, fans will immediately wonder how a piece of the space station could survive the explosion as depicted in Star Wars, but debris of that magnitude does not seem out of the realm of possibility. Remember all the jokes about the second Death Star raining debris across the forest moon of Endor and ending the Ewoks in the resulting ecological disaster?Despite the presumed improbability of the wreckage surviving for 30-odd years, it shook the Celebration stage audience as they saw it for the first time.When The Phantom Menace teaser first debuted 20 years ago, it boldly declared “Every Saga Has A Beginning.” The Rise of Skywalker echoes that sentiment by declaring “The Saga Comes To An End.” Despite a title more appropriate for a Star Wars prequel or reboot, The Rise of Skywalker definitely declares a conclusion to the great filmic experiment that began over 40 years ago, something that Abrams, Kennedy, and the cast stressed during the panel. And the emotions surrounding that were felt on the Celebration stage, even as the crowd cheered Rey on in her leap atop a TIE Fighter. But over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their first appearance is set for next week s Captain Marvel. Previously, the character concept was believed to be part of the 20th Century Fox library of intellectual property alongside the Fantastic Four, but the situation has changed, and the arrival of the storied alien race could mean big things for the MCU. And looking at their history within the pages of Marvel Comics, we have a few guesses as to what their appearance could mean in Marvel Studios output in the years to come.Celestial Origins(Photo by Marvel Studios)As Marvel’s own cosmology began to solidify, the reptilian Skrulls became connected to the Celestials, an impossibly powerful primordial race that is the seeming source of most Marvel superpowers, thanks to their manipulation of genetics across the universe. If you’ve ever watched Ancient Aliens, they are similar to the Sky Peoples the “experts” on that program claim altered human evolution, except the Celestials have more thrilling headgear. (In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Kurt Russell s Ego claimed to be a Celestial, signaling the first appearance of the race in the MCU.) The initial Skrull peoples were split into three distinct groups: Prime, Deviant, and Eternal (Keep the latter two terms in mind as they will matter later). The Deviants hunted the other two groups into virtual extinction. The last surviving Eternal married into the Deviant royal line while the last remaining Prime Skrull fled to Earth and, surprisingly, leaves our tale.After the Deviants won the war for supremacy and became the only Skrull race remaining, they set aside their warring ways, using their shapeshifting powers to infiltrate and assimilate annexed planets and cultures. Cooperation was the order of the day until the Skrulls met the Kree.The Kree-Skrull War(Photo by Marvel Studios)As part of an initial diplomatic mission to the Kree homeworld of Hala, the Skrulls set up a delegation of Kree and Cotati, the planet s other advanced species, on separate worlds to determine which of the two would represent Hala in the Skrull Empire. The Kree killed the Cotati when it became clear the latter species would be chosen. Stunned by their behavior, the Skrull ambassadors banned the Kree from trade with the empire, which prompted the Kree to simply kill the ambassadors and appropriate their technology. Eventually attacking the Skrull homeworld of Skrullos with ships reverse-engineered from that initial encounter, the Kree engaged the Skrulls in a protracted war across millennia that saw the latter reorganize into a militaristic society. This war would continue into the 20th Century (or the relative present, as Marvel’s timeline scales between the 1960s and the present day in strange ways), during which time the Avengers would become part of the conflict.After Earthling superheroes got involved, there was relative peace marred by occasional skirmishes. But any semblance of a ceasefire ended when planet-eater Galactus (who we expect to enter the MCU soon) devoured the Skrull throneworld and its central leadership. Scattered factions turned on each other before resuming their war with the Kree.Secret Invasion(Photo by Marvel Studios)Earth, as it turns out, is in a prime strategic spot for both the Kree and the Skrulls. And thanks to Celestial intervention in its past – which the Kree would later mimic by developing the Inhumans on Earth – it was full of superpowered people ready to defend it from any open invasion. The Skrulls had an advantage thanks to their shapeshifting abilities, infiltrating the planet on a number of occasions, like the aforementioned Fantastic Four #2. Defeat often came at the hands of Skrull defectors who came to enjoy the human way of life.After the Galactus incident and a few other shocks to their sense of superiority, a waning Skrull Empire went for broke, kidnapping prominent superheroes as a prelude to an all-out invasion of the planet. In Secret Invasion by Brian Micheal Bendis and Leinil Yu, their plan comes to fruition as Skrull agents destabilized the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the planetary defense force known as S.W.O.R.D. They also attacked Tony Stark directly, disabling him and the various Stark technologies used around the globe.But as nothing ever goes right for the Skrulls, the heroes they kidnapped made their way back home and help the remaining heroes on Earth defeat the Skrulls after a lot of fighting in and around Manhattan. The resulting fallout saw Tony discredited and Norman Osborn given a leading position in the S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers defense apparatus. But seeing as Osborn one of Spider-Man s most well-known adversaries has not shown up in the MCU yet, that is a story for another day.Skrulls In The MCU(Photo by Marvel Studios)Thanks to the complicated rights situation between Marvel and Fox, the Skrulls are something of a late addition to universal politics. As the MCU developed without them, the Kree debuted in both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Guardians of the Galaxy in an independent fashion. In Guardians, their ancient animosity with the Skrulls appeared to transfer to the Nova Corps of Xandar, but from what we have seen of Captain Marvel, a Kree-Skrull war definitely occurred in the 1990s, the time period in which the film is set.Thanks to some pre-release featurettes, we know the Skrulls are the Kree’s deadliest and most ancient enemy. Their war has been ongoing for generations, and the Starforce is an elite group dedicated to preventing Skrull aggression in Kree space. We also know the Skrulls are infiltrating Earth, with squad leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) making his way into part of the planet s power structure. When Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) first arrives on Earth, a sense of paranoia grabs her as she cannot detect Skrull from human. That paranoia may become a bigger problem for the MCU in the years to come.Who Is Secretly A Skrull?(Photo by Marvel Studios)While it appears Captain Marvel’s main job is to introduce Carol ahead of her appearance in Avengers: Endgame, it also seems to be setting up a number of details for the cinematic universe’s fourth phase and firming up some ideas already introduced in previous Marvel Studios films. In terms of the latter, it will presumably explain why we have not seen Skrulls in the present day MCU and why they are not a continuing threat to the Kree Empire in Guardians of the Galaxy.Of course, it s always possible we have seen Skrulls without knowing it. Thanks to their shapeshifting and power-mimicking abilities, they could be hiding in plain sight. Going back to Secret Invasion, a whopping number of characters turned out to be Skrulls. Spider-Woman, for example, turned out to be the Skrull Empress, which shocked fans of the character, as she had been on a year-long journey of self-discovery that was undone by the event series. Tony Stark’s butler Jarvis – who is a conventional human man in the comics – also turned out to be a Skrull who kidnapped the real Jarvis and replaced him for at least two years prior to the invasion. As the miniseries pointed out, the Skrulls need to keep the people they are replacing alive to make the duplication viable. Thanks to a direct connection with their captives, Skrulls can possess their memories and can even act as sleeper agents unaware of their Skrull nature.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Because of this, we suspect at least a few of MCU characters who survive Endgame will turn out to be Skrulls. Back in the comic book, Hank Pym turned out to be an active Skrull agent, while dupes of Iron Man, Spider-Man, Invisible Woman, and many more were unleashed during the open invasion to confuse the heroes. Considering the Skrull-Hank’s importance to the scheme, it would not surprise us if the MCU’s version of the character (played by Michael Douglas in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp) was replaced between films. It is even possible he was replaced before the first Ant-Man film, with the sleeper agent as dedicated to retrieving Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) as the real Hank.This makes an infiltration scheme – should it survive the plot of Captain Marvel – all the more insidious. People who disappear for long stretches like Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) seem like prime candidates for duplication. Curiously, none of those three were replaced in Secret Invasion, but they would certainly seem suspect in a post-Endgame world in which the Avengers begin to wonder who is friend or foe. Then again, the same could be said about nearly every member of Team Cap, since they went off the grid after Captain America: Civil War. But also consider Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) weekends away from the Avengers complex. That is plenty of time to replace either or both. Of course, we’re going to assume Vision was never replaced, as the Skrull ability cannot presumably replicate the powers of the Mind Stone. Plus, he s, well, you know.And should Robert Downey Jr. decide to stick around for another few films after Endgame, learning he may have been a Skrull replacement would certainly give him some new drama to chew on and quip at.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Then there are supporting characters like Luis (Micheal Pena), Shuri (Letitia Wright), General Ross (William Hurt), Jim Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and even Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) to consider. In Secret Invasion, the replacement of Jarvis was actually key to toppling the Avengers, so replacing close friends and relatives could prove equally effective in an MCU version of the story.This all presumes, of course, that the debut of the Skrulls is leading to a phase-long meta-narrative based on that comic book storyline. It is also possible that the Skrulls, with their connection to the Celestials, may come into play within the confines of Chloé Zhao’s upcoming Eternals film. Both early humans and Skrulls and primitive Kree for that matter were altered by the Celestials to create separate breeds of Eternals and Deviants. While the Skrull Eternals and Deviants ultimately became one Skrull race, the human Eternals and Deviants continue a secret war away from Earth. Perhaps one side or the other will reach out to their Skrull cousins for aid.But then, all of this assumes the Skrulls were not completely wiped out in the 1990s, which is still a possibility until Captain Marvel settles the matter. Ferrari is quite the statement for Telluride. As the fall lineup becomes increasingly more competitive, films with mega-watt stars and masses of buzz are still jockeying with similar titles at just about every festival stop. Perhaps this is why the Matt Damon/Christian Bale drama chose to skip the Venice Film Festival (a logical stop most years) and come straight to Telluride; the move makes the racing movie one of the biggest films of the program and one of the hottest tickets. The film chronicles the true-life tale of how the Ford Motor Company worked tirelessly to build a car that could beat racing powerhouse Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966. Damon plays famed Ford car designer Carroll Shelby and Bale is behind the wheel as racing legend Ken Miles. If we trust the first trailer, this could well be a funny, fast-paced adventure and a perfect awards launch pad or Mangold, Damon, and Bale.Marriage Story (2019) 94%

The Wizard of Oz (1939) 98% Number three is a movie that I think is a perfect film and it s a film that it doesn t matter whether I saw it for the first time at 2, or revisited again at 10, or 22, or 32, or this past year when I took my kids to see it on the big screen. And that s The Wizard of Oz.The word timeless is thrown around a lot, and very rarely does it actually feel like it applies to as many motion pictures as are branded with that title. But The Wizard of Oz is one of those films that it truly doesn t matter when you see it, it s still timeless. It remains timeless. And that experience is proven by the fact that my own children, seeing it in a movie theater after seeing it on the small screen when they were very young, are still as awestruck by every single moment of that film as they were the first time they saw it. And it s a movie that was made during the Great Depression. So that is a testament to great cinema. The character was rebooted in 2018 with Tom Hardy in a standalone anti-hero take on the classic villain, and that film, Venom, opened to .2 million. While Rotten at 30% on the Tomatometer, it made it to 3.5 million (a 2.66 multiple), even if its competitor that October weekend (Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born) ultimately bested it with over 5 million. But that was then, this is now. The world has been through the downswing of a pandemic and not even the richest sequel or franchise film has been able to outgross its predecessor in that time. Until this weekend, when Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened at .1 million, beating the original film, marking the biggest three-day weekend of the pandemic era, and the second-best October opening ever behind Joker s .2 million opening in 2019.Let’s trace the path of the weekend for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is currently registering a 59% on the Tomatometer – one precious percentage point away from Fresh. On Thursday night, the theater-exclusive grossed .6 million, which was second only to Black Widow’s .2 million pre-Premier Access Thursday for the pandemic era. On Friday the film grossed an estimated .3 million, again second to Widow’s .5 million start when it was available for .99 on Disney+ as well. Historically, the only film to open with over million on Friday and not gross million over the weekend was the first Twilight film back in 2008. The vampire flick and Black Widow have been the only films with million-plus Fridays (out of 71 films) not to cross 0 million in their first five days of release (and subsequently not hit 0 million). Only Shang-Chi has reached that milestone as quickly during the pandemic, in part aided by the Labor Day holiday.Let There Be Carnage s whopping .1 million weekend (at least million higher than some of the best early estimates) would suggest that the Venom sequel could be on a path towards the new ceiling established by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but it is that very film that could stand in its way. Over four straight weeks, not a single film came close to challenging Shang-Chi for the top spot at the box office. Not one other film that opened throughout September opened to million or more. In fact, the three other biggest openings included two HBO Max hybrids (Malignant at .43 million and Cry Macho and .42 million) and musical Dear Evan Hansen, which had the second-best opening of last month with .44 million (and dropped 68% this weekend to .4 million). Shang-Chi had no challengers and word of mouth was good. The latter remains to be seen on the second Venom, but the next three weeks are filled with significant competition in the form of No Time to Die, Halloween Kills, The Last Duel, and Dune.The first Venom film dropped 56.4% in weekend two when faced with First Man, Goosebumps 2, and Bad Times at the El Royale, all of which grossed less than half of Venom’s second week at no. 1. It would take until its fifth weekend before any film other than A Star is Born or David Gordon Green’s Halloween would beat it. Let There Be Carnage is not going to have that luxury. A path will become clearer next week and we’ll see if it beats Shang-Chi’s .7 million second weekend. For now, some other good news: The total earnings of this week s top 10, currently estimated at 6.93 million, make it the 10th-best October weekend for the top 10 films ever.The Top 10 and Beyond: Addams Family 2 Proves Family Films Still Have Box Office Life, While Saints Fails to Draw Mobs of Fans(Photo by © MGM )Opening in second place this weekend was The Addams Family 2, which is in theaters at the same time that it is available on VOD for .99. Remember this is the weekend that Sony initially abandoned its plans for an opener with Hotel Transylvania: Transformia. That film was sold to Amazon; Sony replaced it with Venom Deux and MGM/UA read the tea leaves that family films were still not up to full potential given the lack of vaccine availability for kids in their demographic. Nevertheless, an million weekend is not bad all things considered. The Boss Baby: Family Business opened to million in July and that was simultaneously streaming for free on Peacock. That was also a 68.1% drop from the original’s million opening, while The Addams Family 2 is only about a 40.6% drop from the first Addams Family film s .3 million start. It’s also the second-best opening since the reforming of UA Releasing, ahead of fellow reboots/remakes of Child’s Play (.09 million) and The Hustle ( million). So we’ll chalk this up as a minor victory for the time being.Meanwhile, The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, become Warner Bros. fourth straight film not to reach million in its opening weekend. WB would have to go back to the end of 2006 to see a run of wide releases – The Fountain (.76 million), Blood Diamond (.64 million), Unaccompanied Minors (.81 million), and We Are Marshall (.11 million) – do as poorly as their HBO Max hybrids Reminiscence (.95 million), Malignant (.43 million), Cry Macho (.42 million), and now Many Saints ( million). Even their Entourage film opened to .37 million in its first day and million in its first three. HBO Max actually feels like a pretty perfect place to watch a story about Tony Soprano’s uncle, but it s hard to believe it wouldn t have at least beaten the opening weekend of the epilogue about Vincent Chase and his cronies were it a theatrical exclusive.Dropping down to third place is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: with its first real test of competition, it fell 54% to million, bringing its total to 6.1 million. After last weekend the film was at 6.2 million and in the realm of the paths of Star Trek Into Darkness (8.7 million final gross) and Brave (7.2 million final). Its million last weekend was also higher than the respective .42 million and .16 million of those films in their fourth weekends. This week it fell slightly behind their .25 million and .04 million fifth weekends. Those films also had just passed 8 million at this time, suggesting that Shang-Chi’s final gross may be closer to 0-5 million than the 0-plus million it was looking like a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, it could still be a very hard number to challenge for 2021’s top grosser. Although Venom’s challenger next week and his arch-nemesis in December are the likely favorites to give it a run for its money.Finally, in limited release, Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or-winning Titane grossed 5,000 in 562 theaters. Also look out for A24 s creepy black comedy/thriller/drama Lamb, the festival-favorite documentary The Rescue, and Bleecker Street s drama Mass, which is Certified Fresh at 92% and marks writer-director Fran Kranz as a major new talent to watch.

The latter character was seemingly killed in the final reel of Avengers: Infinity War, so the series starts with a question: Is Vision alive? In fact, the question forms a key part of the trailer Disney+ released during the 2020 Emmy Awards.The program will also feature Kathryn Hahn as Agnes – more on that in a moment – and see the return of Thor’s Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis and Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Randall Park as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo. The series will also feature another returning Marvel Cinematic Universe figure in a new form: Teyonah Parris will star as a grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, the character played by child actor Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel.That mixture of talent is, in its own way, quite eclectic and telling of what the show might be. Parris’s Rambeau is consistent with a contemporary setting, while the return of Darcy and Woo suggest Wanda’s new adventure has some government intrigue. As Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed at the company’s 2019 Comic-Con International: San Diego presentation, the series is part of Phase 4, which counts the feature films released from next year’s Black Widow to 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will feature Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. Phase 4 will also include the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and the animated series What If..!? – although the canonicity of that last series is up for debate as it will tell alternative versions of established MCU history.Curiously, WandaVision leapfrogged The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in September with Disney+ featuring the former in a late 2020 sizzle reel video and the recent trailer. Falcon, one of the few series to resume production after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, is said to have slid into a 2021 launch window after missing its original August release plan. That switch suggests both series may have a certain flexibility in what overarching Phase 4 information they contain although, in a recent EW interview, Feige said close MCU watchers will find a wealth of rewards waiting for you as it all unfolds. At the very least, events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have little-to-no impact on WandaVision, even if both programs set up something for the larger world. In previous interviews, Feige said WandaVision – set after the events of Avengers: Endgame – will have a far-reaching impact on Phase 4 and establish the Scarlet Witch name.With that time frame in mind, we know Vision is definitely dead from our point of view. So is Wanda using the healing power of laughter to cope with the loss?It’s Also A Family Sitcom(!?)Ryan FujitaniThe few glimpses Marvel and Disney+ have offered look like a pastiche of family sitcoms from different eras. Indeed, even the first info about the series at last year’s D23 Expo featured a soundbite from The Dick Van Dyke Show. Subsequent trailers saw Wanda transforming from a black-and-white 1950s housewife into an updated version of the archetype across the rest of the 20th century. The recent trailer even makes a meal out of the arrival of color.During that D23 presentation, Feige and showrunner Jac Schaeffer alluded to the series having a different feel and look – and few things are further from the Marvel Studios house style than a three-camera sitcom. At the very least, though, it gives fans the chance to see Olsen and Bettany in comic-book–accurate Scarlet Witch and Vision costumes. For his part, Bettany said the story is so funny and it just ends up being this huge epic. According to the recent EW interview, the series will begin with Wanda and Vision moving to the black-and-white town of Westview. Their home may look like Rob and Laura’s dwelling from The Dick Van Dyke Show, but the couples’ dilemma is straight out of Bewitched – Wanda must hide her witchy powers and Vision’s synthetic nature from the community. These very 1950s sitcom scenes were even filmed before an actual studio audience. But as Wanda and Vis re-run through the sitcoms of subsequent decades, it becomes clear Westview is not a generic TV town.If we might speculate for a moment, the use of American family sitcom tropes feels right for the character. Considering Wanda was raised in relative isolation alongside her brother Pietro in a Hydra facility, it is entirely possible her notion of a normal family life was informed by watching American sitcoms. As it happens, these sorts of shows were regularly exported across the world in our reality, giving the notion of a Leave It to Beaver nuclear family purchase in real-life Sokovians. Alternatively, Hydra may have been trying to show Wanda what they sought to destroy. Either way, it is clear Wanda is trying to create a family unit of her own using whatever ideas and means available to her.Unless, as the trailer suggests near its end, this is all Vision s doing And It s About Grief(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)The Scarlet Witch of Marvel Comics fame is known for being so powerful that she can alter reality to remove mutants from the world or will children into existence. Though the MCU Wanda has yet to exhibit such an ability, her powers originate from the Infinity Stones and may be strong enough to transport her into various sitcom realities. In fact, a moment late in the trailer sees Monica Rambeau seemingly ejected from a sunny world into a park lit by artificial means. But why would Wanda do all of this? To mourn Vision’s passing, of course. Or, perhaps, to find a way to bring him back.Though rooted in sitcom iconography, the series also appears to be taking several cues from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s Vision comic book miniseries; the writer even suggested as much at a 2019 New York Comic Con panel. In that story, Vision was himself trying to find domestic bliss by building an android family. Virginia, the wife model, had a brain pattern modeled after Wanda and … well, let’s just say things ended badly. Besides her power, comic book Wanda also suffers from various mental illnesses and can be her own worst enemy.Ryan FujitaniFrom the recent interview, we also know the series is inspired, in part, by some very specific Scarlet Witch stories Olsen read before filming 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. If these stories include the time she used magic to have children with Vision or when she changed all of reality to restore their existences – they disappeared when it turned out they were aspects of the demon Mephisto – it is easy to see how Wanda’s ongoing grief might lead to her conjuring a new world to live in.Combining those strands, it is entirely possible the series will be set in the sitcom world and the MCU. In the trailer, Kathryn Hahn is seen as the “nosy neighbor in the 1950s sitcom reality, but her later appearance in the seemingly modern world may be an attempt to wake up Wanda or Vision. If he s still dead, then this version of him may part of her own consciousness. And a powerful but disassociated Scarlet Witch would be a good reason to bring in Monica and Jimmy Woo, who may or may not be a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, into the mix.Then again, there’s another Marvel organization acronym we might be seeing.It Will Introduce S.W.O.R.D. The organization debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 2004 as the space-based version of S.H.I.E.L.D., defending Earth from alien incursion or subversion. And if you consider the space fleet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was assembling in the Spider-Man: Far From Home stinger scene, it would seem S.W.O.R.D. has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time. Perhaps Fury’s been building the group since he went off the grid in Winter Soldier. Alternatively, it may be something he whipped together with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in the time since Endgame. Either way, it is easy to see why Wanda’s power would be valuable to him and to S.W.O.R.D.And from the trailer, its clear some organization with deep resources is keeping tabs on whatever is happening to Wanda and Vision.It’s Set To Be A Winter Treat, And Will Likely Last Just One SeasonRyan FujitaniThough always intended to run after The Falcon and the Winter Solider, WandaVision held to a late 2020/early 2021 launch for much of its development, with it officially premiering on Disney+ on January 15, 2021. Thanks to the September sizzle reel and the subsequent trailer, we fully expected it to take The Mandalorian’s place as your must-watch streaming program after the Star Wars series concludes December 18. But it seems the real-life pressures of making a television series pushed the program s debut into the new year. Considering the much longer delays for Black Widow and Eternals, a handful of weeks isn t too much longer to wait.Like The Mandalorian and other Disney+ originals, the series will stream weekly. Consisting of six episodes, it is also expected to be the only season of WandaVision. Indeed, all of the Phase 4 Disney+ shows were initially pitched as limited series. We assume the format made it more attractive to the actors, who would know from the get-go there would be no long-term commitments to a television show. Then again, with the Phase 5 shows like She-Hulk being pitched as more traditional, multi-season ideas – and with the Loki series reportedly revving up for a second year – it is always possible WandaVision will return. Maybe she’ll transport herself and Vision to cop shows next time. You know you want to see Vision with a greasy comb-over.
