Let s all do this all together.” So that makes for a more relaxed performance and it s just more fun.Opening Night is also important to me because it s about the theater. Those scenes where she s backstage and about to go on, or the scenes in the rehearsal room, but particularly when she s about to go on stage, that visceral thrill and terror, the way he catches it… theater is my heart so it combines a lot of my loves in that film.

Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd will star, co-starring with each other again for the first time since Anchorman 2. Ferrell will play the patient and Rudd the therapist in the story of the duo’s relationship, which grows beyond a professional one and leads to Rudd’s Dr. Ike moving in with Ferrell’s Marty and taking over his family business. “The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an unprecedentedly exploitative one filled with manipulation, power grabs, and dysfunction at its finest,” according to MRC’s release. Emmy winner Georgia Pritchett will write the series, while Michael Showalter will direct.Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will star in Swan Song, an Apple/Anonymous Content co-production that will air on Apple TV+ and be released into theaters. The Florida Project Director Sean Baker Debuts Latest to Rave Reviews(Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)Wednesday, July 14: The Florida Project director Sean Baker is the focus of our final installment of the Cannes Ketchup. The festival will continue until Saturday with an award ceremony on Friday, but we will end our daily French Dispatch with the premiere and reactions from Baker s Red Rocket. The Tangerine helmer s latest like his previous films is an urban fantasy about a group of people who exist in the margins of society, particularly those who work in the sex industry.This time around, his subject is a narcissistic former porn star turned suitcase pimp down-on-their-luck (usually homeless) hustlers who prey on women to fund them under the guise of being cared for. We follow one who returns home to the Texas gulf after his dreams of porn star glory are dashed out in Los Angeles. Mikey Saber (Simon Rex) may have hit a rough patch, living with his estranged wife, but thanks to a donut counter girl he meets three weeks shy of her 18th birthday, he sees dollar signs in his future.Baker himself has admitted that he expected backlash due to the subject and general lack of accountability for doing dirty deeds, but so far, that has not been the case. Jo-Anne Titmarsh of HeyUGuys wrote, Baker s skewering of modern life is as vibrant and bleak as ever. He elicits some phenomenal performances, through which we see the hollow heart of the America dream. An interesting film to try and peg for end-of-year awards, it will undoubtedly have success at the Independent Spirit Awards, with possibly just enough for an Oscar push for Best Original Screenplay or Rex for Best Actor. Jury President Spike Lee also seemed to be a fan, marking this one a possible dark horse for the Palme d Or. Later in the day, Justin Chon brought his latest effort, Blue Bayou, to Cannes, and it was received well by critics. Iana Murray of The Playlist wrote, What Blue Bayou does wonderfully in these quiet moments is illustrate that being Asian is not a one-size-fits-all identity but a vast tapestry of different cultures. Chon wrote and directed the feature as he has for all of his previous films, and this time around, he plays a Louisiana man who learns he was adopted illegally and now faces deportation. The Focus Features film looks to hit theaters in September, just in time for an awards season/festival run.(Photo by Carole Bethuel)After its trailer lit up the Twittersphere a few weeks ago and neared cult status among Dion/pop music fans around the globe, the highly buzzed-about unofficial Celine Dion biopic Aline was also surprisingly well received, with Vanity Fair s Richard Lawson noting the film accesses what lies at the heart of Dion as a public figure: she s a bit of a weirdo, goofy and corny and gaudy and fabulous. Aline would have been the hottest topic of the day if it weren t for the film that closed it out, as Julia Ducournau took the shine off everyone with Titane. If you caught and enjoyed Ducournau s first feature, Raw, you will feel right at home with her follow-up, a truly bats t film that features, among other things, vigorous sex with a car, impregnation of said car, a serial killer orgy takedown, and, best of all, the 1990s one-hit wonder Macarena making a triumphant and lifesaving appearance.so many walkouts and shrieks of horrified, delighted laughter during Titane… genuinely demented, totally original body horror serial killer car sex buddy movie… Julia Ducournau you’re truly crazy for this one and I love u rachel handler (@rachel_handler) July 13, 2021Star-Studded Cast of The French Dispatch Wows the Crowd(Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)Monday, July 12: Last night’s premiere for The French Dispatch was the first gala with the electricity and vibrancy of pre-pandemic times. The cast all rode together in a throwback party bus to the Grand Lumiere Theatre, where the assembled crowd was treated to selfies and autographs from the cast members who disembarked. Bill Murray, Timothée Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and director Wes Anderson were greeted with loud cheers as they made their way up the red carpet steps.The film stitches together a series of vignettes related to the final issue of a Kansas newspaper’s French edition. Possibly the most hyper-stylized film of his career with plenty of his signature shots, The French Dispatch dazzled the audience. Festival attendance is significantly down this year with less than half of the delegates from last year present, so many galas have had to close the balcony to fill seats. This was not the case here, as the premiere of Wes Anderson’s tenth feature filled every seat of the grand theater with many outside still hoping for a ticket.The reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with Jessica Kiang of The Playlist calling it, “A work of such unparalleled Andersonian wit, that at times the sheer level of detail mobile, static, graphic and typographic that bedecks the screen will slacken your jaw in awe.” This is one of several films Searchlight will have in contention for the Oscars, but a gorgeous love letter to journalism could be their best bet to repeat after winning last year with Nomadland. Lee himself still managed to balance a bit of football time between screenings at the Kering Women in Motion dinner. Huddled with some other Croisette A-listers, Lee tried to see what he could from a tablemate’s cell phone before the event organizers wheeled out a television with the Italy vs. England Euro Cup Final on screen.Viva la cinema! The three-hour epic road-trip film centers on a theater director and his chauffeur as the pair build a friendship to heal past trauma along the road. Other favorites of the day were Compartment Number 6 and The Worst Person in the World. Compartment Number 6, which takes place on a fated train ride to somewhere near the top of the world, had many remarking on its inventive plotting. Todd McCarthy of Deadline noted it was filled with “vivid emotional twists and turns that are charted with unusual acuity. These may be the ones to beat midway through the festival, but we still have several noteworthy entries ahead, including Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and Sean Baker’s Red Rocket. Sean Penn Makes a Hopeful Return to Cannes(Photo by Lionel Hahn/Getty Images)Saturday, July 10: Sean Penn returned to Cannes hoping to erase his previous trip with The Last Face, which was booed and noted by some as the worst film to ever screen in competition. This time, Penn directs and stars as a father to a young girl in Flag Day, as told in chapters over several years. The narrative begins in the 1970s and follows the daughter (played by his real-life daughter, Dylan Frances Penn) from youth to adulthood as she grapples with the realization that her father is an inveterate conman, even as she loves him deeply. While this is a step up from his last effort, initially favorable reviews for the film have cooled to a more mixed reception, and the most memorable thing to come out of the Cannes premiere of Flag Day will most likely be Penn’s pointed comments on the American COVID response.Jodie Turner-Smith Lights Up the Red Carpet(Photo by Lionel Hahn/Getty Images)Thursday, July 8:  The first night of the festival with palpable buzz kicked off when After Yang star Jodie Turner-Smith lit up the red carpet ahead of the film’s premiere. The Queen Slim star was the living embodiment of the word statuesque, draped in a strapless Gucci gown with a black vinyl and crystal bustier over a cream skirt with yellow crystal embroidery and canary yellow ostrich feathers. It was a fitting ensemble for a film that also captured the attention of critics here on the ground, where it is still Fresh at 89% after a handful of reviews.It only took until day 3 but AFTER YANG is the first #Cannes2021 film to make me ugly cry. Without a doubt the best movie about AI since Ex Machina, and a beautiful exploration of memories, family, being an immigrant, and humanity. Director Kogonada’s (Columbus) second feature film also stars Colin Farrell, Haley Lu Richardson, newcomer Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja and The Umbrella Academy s Justin H. Min as the family AI, which suddenly malfunctions.Stillwater Earns a Standing Ovation That Brings Matt Damon to TearsThursday, July 8: Premiering just after After Yang was the Focus Features film Stillwater, which will hit theaters in just a couple of weeks. Starring Matt Damon as an Oklahoma oil rig worker out to free his daughter from prison in Marseille after she is convicted wrongfully, she claims of murder. Stillwater was well received by critics it s currently Fresh at 88%  and Damon, who wiped away tears during the film s standing ovation, was clearly touched and surprised by the rapturous reception from the festival crowd. Carrying the entire narrative while sporting a thick Oklahoman Accent, Damon could be a play for Best Actor at end-of-year awards. Couple this with the fact that it s the first film from director Tom McCarthy since 2015 s Best Picture-winning Spotlight and it will undoubtedly end up in the conversation.(Photo by A24)Also gaining significant buzz yesterday was Joanna Hogg’s follow-up to her previous feature, The Souvenir. The Souvenir: Part II is a continuation of her semi-autobiographical tale about a romance between a film student named Julie and a heroin addict. It picks up shortly after the events of the first film, as Julie attempts to translate what she experienced into a narrative feature; a meta premise that is masterfully executed. Honor Swinton Byrne reprises her role as Julie, and she is joined by her real-life mother, Tilda Swinton, who has five features at the festival this year, including Wes Anderson s highly anticipated The French Dispatch.Well, so THE SOUVENIR II is not just masterful, it s the kind of masterful that retroactively engulfs and electrifies the already-very-good THE SOUVENIR,reshaping it, too, into a subtly different magnificence. Jessica Kiang (@jessicakiang) July 8, 2021Day Two: A Pair of Docs Are the Talk of the TownWednesday, July 7: Day two of the first Cannes Film Festival back from the pandemic saw things get into the groove. After sparse mask compliance on day one, the staff at the Grand Lumiere Theatre seemed to make more of an effort to remind patrons to comply with the mask-always-on mandate. This was a welcome action, as a COVID-19 outbreak would be the worst possible outcome for a festival that seems to have made considerable efforts to keep the events safe.However, day two wasn t all about compliance or daily COVID tests; the two most talked-about films were English language documentaries. Todd Haynes presented an artful time capsule chronicling the history and influence of the iconic counterculture band The Velvet Underground. Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist wrote, Todd Haynes striking and daring The Velvet Underground doc is as jagged, artful and unconventional as the iconoclastic art-rock group itself. With just a handful of reviews in so far, it s currently at 100% on the Tomatometer, placing it atop our Cannes Scorecard, followed closely by yesterday s other highly buzzworthy doc, Val, which centers on actor Val Kilmer. Bizarre, heady, moving, and ridiculous all in the same moment, the film was summed up best by Ed Potton for Times (UK) sums, who called it an anti-La La Land with dashes of Pinocchio, a fitting curtain-raiser to a Cannes like no other. Frémaux and his team dared to dream the impossible dream an in-person premiere film festival and then made that dream come true. The stars and press have now gathered after rigorous testing and COVID protocols, and for the most part, things look to be on track for a seamless event. That was the sentiment everyone who took the stage on opening night wanted to convey: We are here. At the opening ceremony, Bong Joon-ho, last year s Palm d Or winner for Parasite, and 2021 Honorary Palm d Or recipient Jodie Foster were joined by this year s Jury President Spike Lee and director Pedro Almodóvar to officially kick things off with one word spoken in Korean, French, Spanish, and English: Open. While the same could not be said for the issue-plagued Cannes ticketing website, however, which faltered most of the day Tuesday, even that failed to dim the intoxicating air of this year s festivities. The program is much as it has always been but also something entirely new, overcrowded but now with a (mostly) masked audience, bureaucratic but now paying careful attention to testing and (most of) ticketing. And the event organizers look to have pulled it off. The opening night film and a few soirees have gone off without a hitch. But the big questions are yet unanswered, namely which film will be the one to rise above the rest. More than 30 years after publication, and more than 25 years following the first adaptation, Stephen King’s massive novel It was turned into the highest-grossing horror movie of all time — and with an 86% on the Tomatometer, it’s one of the best-reviewed releases in the genre, as well. And then there was Three Kings (Certified Fresh at 94%), part action comedy, part heist movie, and 20 years later, still holding up as one of the best and most subversive war films ever made.Directed with adrenalized panache by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Three Kings followed on the heels of Steven Spielberg’s heroic 1998 WWII epic Saving Private Ryan, which canonized the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation. But Russell had no such patriotic flag to wave. Like Catch-22, Three Kings satirically probes the insanities of war; like Apocalypse Now, it revels in surreal set pieces and sharp visual juxtapositions; like M*A*S*H, it mixes black humor with moral complexity.Its heroes are reluctant ones, soldiers who start out consumed by their own self-interest until forced by untenable circumstances to take a moral stand.IT HAS A KILLER VISUAL LOOKInspired by color photos of the war that appeared in newspapers at the time, Russell and his cinematographer, Newton Thomas Siegel, devised a saturated, blown-out look for the Iraqi desert (actually Arizona) in the film. They increased the contrast and graininess and bypassed the bleaching stage of the film process, giving the desert landscape a foreboding, surreal look, which set the visual template for other films about contemporary wars that followed. The Iraqi village was designed by production designer Catherine Hardwicke, who served the same role on films like Tombstone and Tank Girl and would go on to direct the first Twilight and Lords Of Dogtown.IT MAKES ASTUTE POLITICAL POINTS WITHOUT BEING PREACHY(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Russell exposes the hypocrisy of American foreign policy in the Middle East and indicts the Bush Administration for its abandonment of anti-Saddam insurgents – whom the U.S. had encouraged to rise up against the Iraqi dictator – all without pedantic speeches or heavy-handed scenes. The soldiers who steal back the Kuwaiti gold from Saddam – George Clooney, Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg, and Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze – spend the latter part of the film, at great risk to themselves, helping a group of insurgents reach the Iranian border, foreshadowing the refugee crisis of future wars to come.IT HAS THE MOTHER OF ALL INTERROGATION SCENESWhat’s a good war movie without at least one hard-to-watch interrogation scene? Most of these scenes tend to follow a simple formula: someone, usually a soldier, is captured behind enemy lines and tortured for information. But the scene between Moroccan actor Saïd Taghmaoui as an Iraqi army officer and Mark Wahlberg as the captured American soldier gets up close and personal in a way few of these scenes manage to.While the Iraqi does torture Wahlberg s character with electric shocks, he’s no faceless sadist; our sympathies are engaged when we learn he’s lost his young son and daughter to American bombing raids. But the capper comes when Taghmaoui forces oil down Wahlberg’s throat, a searing indictment on what many felt was the real point of America’s intervention in Kuwait: to protect its oil reserves in the Middle East.IT’S THE FIRST WAR FILM TO SHOW GRAPHICALLY WHAT A BULLET CAN DO TO THE HUMAN BODYRussell was concerned about viewers being anesthetized to gun violence; his answer was to give the audience the uniquely visceral experience of how a bullet traumatizes the human body. In the scene, Clooney lectures his men: What makes any gunshot wound bad, provided you survive the bullet, is something called sepsis. Say a bullet tears into you right now. It creates a cavity of dead tissue, the cavity fills up with bile and bacteria, and you’re f ed. As the soldiers listen, the camera tracks a bullet as it smashes into the body, tearing through flesh and filling the organs with bile.While doing press for the film, Russell grew so irritated with a reporter’s questions that he made up a story about how the bullet scene was done using a real corpse. Needless to say, the studio did not find it funny.IT TRANSFORMED GEORGE CLOONEY’S CAREERIn 1999, Clooney was still playing a doctor on NBC’s hit TV show E.R. After the disappointment of 1997 s Batman Robin (11% on the Tomatometer), he was desperate for meatier roles in prestige projects.  In particular, he wanted the role of Three Kings’ disillusioned Special Forces Major Archie Gate (it didn’t hurt that Warner Bros., who produced Three Kings, also produced E.R.), but his relationship with Russell was volatile from the start. The weather on set in Arizona was hot, and the shoot proved to be chaotic. Clooney would often show up on set only to find that Russell had completely rewritten his scenes. As recounted on Slate.com, the two famously came to blows after Clooney objected to Russell physically manhandling an extra on the set.Nevertheless, the film helped to cement Clooney as a leading man, as he jumped to starring roles in The Perfect Storm and O Brother, Where Art Thou? Honestly, it s not that hard to see why. Both shows originated as video games  Digimon started out as Tamagotchi-like virtual pets and Pokémon was a series of role-playing games before expanding to trading cards, TV shows, and movies.While Pokémon grew to become a multimedia juggernaut that has churned out TV seasons non-stop since 1997 and produced over 20 feature films, Digimon has quietly but steadily remained in its shadow since it premiered in 1999. But with the recent release of Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and with the franchise s first film, Digimon: The Movie, celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, it s about time we take out our Digivice, become champions of the Digital World, and explore why Digimon is the superior 90s franchise about young kids who befriend small fighting monsters.It Was Appointment TV(Photo by FOX)By the late 90s, we were already entering the era of prestige TV, as the arrival of shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing, with a stronger focus on serialized narratives, forced people to tune in every week or risk missing important plot points. Though children s television at the time was mostly episodic, Digimon marked a groundbreaking development for many kids of the era who discovered that they too had to watch every episode if they wanted to follow along with the story.Many episodes ended on cliffhangers, characters experienced genuine story arcs, and smaller events and characters were frequently referenced later. Sometimes, major characters would be separated from each other for weeks at a time, and side characters would suddenly become important. This made for a more challenging but rewarding experience that treated children like a serious TV-viewing audience. More than anything, the show trusted its young viewers to keep up with its narrative week by week, so that by the time the epic finale came each season, the anticipation for it had been building for months.It Tackled Mature Subjects(Photo by FOX)Digimon is very much a Saturday morning cartoon-style show aimed at kids, but it got away with a surprising amount of depth. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Digimon featured character development that would unfold over the course of each season. The second season spent a lot of time telling the story of the self-proclaimed Digimon Emperor, who is consumed by darkness and begins to take over the Digital World before atoning for his sins in a redemption arc that spans several episodes.The show also explored themes that were relatable to kids but seldom seen in kids cartoons, like exploring the effects of a divorce on a family, the pressure of living up to one s family s expectations, or the grief of losing a loved one. In the third season, a character named Jeri is even thrown into a weeks-long depression after the death of a Digimon friend. Indeed, Digimon fully acknowledged that its titular creatures are dangerous beings, and danger lurks behind every corner, sometimes with devastating results. The show was upbeat and action-packed for the most part, but it was never afraid to pull at your heartstrings, either.Its Stakes Were Incredibly High(Photo by FOX)Digimon isn t about collecting all the monsters, or about fighting a new villain each week; it s about kids on a mission to literally save the world. No offense to Jessie and James of Pokémon s Team Rocket, but they aren t the most competent villains out there. Meanwhile, the Digital World of Digimon is home to some seriously monstrous villains capable of ruthless evil. Each season hinges on world-ending stakes that require the kids to work against all odds with the help of a friend or two to win the day. In most of the seasons (as well as the recent movie and new reboot), the Digital World even leaks into the real world, threatening to destroy everything.Such high stakes have meant that the series has lost more than a few of its characters. This may be a children s show, but Digimon has never been afraid to kill off beloved heroes in heartbreaking ways we still haven t healed from the devastating loss of Wizardmon in the original series. Plenty of friends and allies have met their demise over the course of the show, so much so that one character held a funeral for lost friends during the first season. But sure, remind me how sad it was when Ash said goodbye to Butterfree — which wasn t even permanent.The Movie Is Bonkers and Has a Fantastic, Totally 90s Soundtrack(Photo by Everett Collection)Speaking of high stakes, the plot of Digimon: The Movie is completely nuts. The main characters (still 10 years old, by the way) literally have to prevent a nuclear warhead from exploding over Tokyo after a virus-infected Digimon takes over the U.S. nuclear arsenal specifically to target a couple of kids. It takes a while for the kids to bring the fight to the bad guy, though, because they also have to battle… slow internet connections and the unreliable email.Considering the movie was cobbled together from three short films and packaged for release outside of Japan, it s a wonder the story makes any sense at all. It s also worth noting that two of those three short films were the early efforts of acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, who would go on to make films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Mirai.But the greatest thing about Digimon: The Movie isn t its ludicrous story, but its bizarre yet surprisingly solid soundtrack. Just as Pokémon: The First Movie included songs by Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and NSYNC, the producers of Digimon went all out to make their movie the most 90s event ever. In addition to the show s theme song, which reflects a time when every anime show was marketed to American audiences with hip hop, the film s pop soundtrack includes everything from Fatboy Slim, Barenaked Ladies sexually-charged One Week, and a fantastic cover of Kids in America by Len to a pre-Shrek All Star by the one and only Smash Mouth to close out the film. That s right, pre-Shrek. Meme or not, that s hard to top.It Knew How to End(Photo by Toei Animation)Franchises eventually change, whether they re Star Wars, Marvel, or Toy Story, but Pokémon, despite an occasional change of scenery, has otherwise remained pretty much the same, plot- and character-wise. Digimon, on the other hand, always knew its audience was eventually going to grow up, so it grew up with them. 2015 saw the release of Digimon Tri, a series of movies that picked up 5 years after the end of the original show, with the characters now in high-school. Then, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna came out earlier this year and, like Toy Story 3 did for a little while, actually dared to say goodbye to the franchise with a story that signals from the get-go that it will be Agumon and Tai s final adventure.Digimon s audience came of age with the franchise because Digimon is a coming-of-age story. It recognized its place in the audience s life and has grown to reflect the same changes its audience has experienced. Digimon knows some things from our childhood will inevitably have to be left behind. Though the series was ultimately rebooted earlier this year, Last Evolution Kizuna puts a bittersweet bow on 20 years of adventures that began with Digimon Adventure and Digimon: The Movie, which is an example that more franchises honestly should follow.Digimon: The Movie was released in theaters on October 6, 2000.On an Apple device? As seen in his previous effort, Long Way North, Chayé is fond of producing 2D animation with a simple graphic style, both in character design and backgrounds, and brightly saturated colors. Rather than a paper diary, a tablet becomes his preferred instrument. Lo-fi in the most masterful way and idiosyncratic to a fault in how it interprets the human condition (with all its cruelty and tenderness), Wilczynski’s debut feature won’t soon be erased from your psyche.The Knight and the Princess (Saudi Arabia, Egypt)(Photo by Alsahar Animation)A co-production between Saudi Arabia and Egypt and the first animated from these nations to have an international presence, this seventh century saga follows 15-year-old knight Mohammed Bin Alkassim as he embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue women and children abducted by ruthless pirates. Blending 2D and 3D techniques, the team behind the film achieved a look that calls to mind classic Disney movies, even more so because of its use of memorable songs. Furthermore, the villain sidekicks, two clumsy djinns, will surely remind viewers of Pain and Panic from Hercules. It’s a culturally specific production with wide appeal.Lupin III: The First (Japan)(Photo by GKIDS)Created in 1967 by manga artist Kazuhiko Katō (A.K.A. Monkey Punch), Lupin III is an astute thief descended from French writer Maurice Leblanc s fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, and his globetrotting adventures have been explored over multiple TV series and films, including Hayao Miyazaki s 1979 directorial debut The Castle of Cagliostro. Now, over 50 years after its first appearance, the franchise evolves for a CG installment by writer-director Takashi Yamazaki. This time, the likable criminal and his dexterous accomplices must hunt down an enigmatic diary that could potentially resurrect the Third Reich if it were to fall into the wrong hands. Faced with the challenge of working with such a well-known property, Yamazaki embraces the 3D aesthetic to make it his own.GKIDS will release the film in the U.S. later this year.My Love Affair with Marriage (Latvia, USA)(Photo by signebaumane.com)After tackling mental health in her debut feature Rocks in My Pockets, Latvia’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014, animator Signe Baumane examines the neurochemistry of love and the unjust societal standards imposed on women. Through sharp observations and two dozen songs, viewers will get to witness the introspective journey of Zelma, a young woman searching for a romantic partner in Soviet times. To attain her singular style, Baumane and her small team constructed physical sets similar to those used in stop-motion animation and photographed them. She then animated the 2D characters on paper before sending them to be colored in Riga, the Latvian capital. Impressive action sequences and polished rural backgrounds resembling those in Studio Ghibli’s catalogue enrich this family-oriented story populated with fantastical creatures.The Nose or the Conspiracy of Mavericks (Russia)(Photo by Annecy International Animation Film Festival)Part offbeat opera about a man whose nose leaves his body to become a powerful figure in 19th century St. Petersburg, and part satirical examination of how Stalin’s murderous regime imposed creative restrictions on music and art. Using a variety of mediums, from watercolors to cutouts on glass, veteran Russian director Andrey Khrzhanovskiy harnesses Nikolai Gogol’s surrealist short story The Nose and Dmitri Shostakovich’s adaption of that same work for the stage into an endlessly inventive and biting political satire. Season 3 – for which creator Justin Simien brought his dynamic cast of students back to Winchester University for junior year – is currently rated Fresh at 89% on the Tomatometer.  Still packed with biting social commentary, the storylines this year broke new ground for the characters and the narrative format.Rotten Tomatoes spoke with star Logan Browning, who plays the bombastic and outspoken Samantha, who after two seasons hosting her campus radio show Dear White People, leaves her beloved show and host identity behind in the latest season. Below, the actress discusses what she s watching on TV right now, what she and Issa Rae get up to during their epic yacht parties, and season 3 of Dear White People.WHAT IS APPOINTMENT TV FOR YOU?(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)The most recent thing that I got to appointment watch was Big Little Lies, and I did that with my friend Camille because it came on every Sunday and I have HBO NOW. That s the most recent thing I was able to watch every time it came on.Rotten Tomatoes: How do you make time to watch it together?We are very considerate of each other s time. We would check in on every Saturday and be like, Hey are you busy on Sunday? Do you want to wait to watch it on Monday? And then we d always alternate whose house we re going to so no one s having to constantly host and no one s having to constantly make the trek to the other person s place. And then, of course, we d order food and we don t start it until we have our food, which gets to be a problem sometimes because it just gets later and later when you re waiting for your Postmates or Uber Eats delivery. And then, we try really, really hard not to pause it. We ll look at each other at certain moments throughout the whole thing like, Are we on the same page here? I ve tried multiple times to pause it and talk to Camille about it and she s like, No, we have to just keep going. Yes, we have to power through and we will discuss it after just like a movie. That s what it requires.WHAT’S ON YOUR DVR?Well, I m one of those people who does not have cable. I only have streaming. I have Hulu Live, but the way my life works, I never get to use it. I wouldn t know what to DVR if I had one.WHAT’S IN YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by Netflix)I m in the middle of bingeing Queer Eye. I like to mix my fiction and my feel-good reality shows. I m also in the middle of Stranger Things. That is whenever they release it — in like 2040! [laughs] I feel it s never going to be here, but I can t wait.RT: Didn t you and Issa Rae just throw a yacht party together? Did you ask her about it? I didn t. But I should have brought that up. Where s my season three, sis? We mad, Issa. We mad! [laughs] No, I know, she s busy making movies. Everybody s growing up and growing out in different ways. Talk about the maturity of this season.I think that the characters have to grow. That s a lot of what college is about: finding yourself, your voice, and just figuring out how the world wants you to behave, versus how you react to the world, versus how you want to create your own narrative for the rest of your next couple of years. All of the characters have core issues that they ll always probably deal with. I know Justin has said this before, As a writer, you want to create problems for your characters and then never solve them, and I find that fascinating because in every season we just get closer to solving these problems. But ultimately, the things in our lives that we feel are our problems are really a part of something. That s our shadow self, right? It s a part of you that will always be with you. You just learn how to work around it, with it, and through it. That s kind of what all these characters are doing. They have things in their lives that they come up against and they ve just got to figure out how to work through it. The tagline of the season is: Grow by any means necessary.RT: Samantha s in a different place this time.  Talk to me about coming back to Sam without Dear White People as her thing.It s funny. Sam was always experiencing the retaliation of the radio show at her mic. That s gone this year and it s difficult for Sam. Because in the long run she hopes this will be a vacation, and that whenever she s got her life together she can come back to it. But in the end, she s like, I don t know if I m ready to really jump back into this. And when you get to that moment, you have to decide, is this thing that I ve created staying the same or is it going to change? That also happened with the show Dear White People too. Justin, Yvette [Lee Bowser, showrunner], all of the cast and crew have together created this series and now this season has been all about change. So now it s like, Well, what happens next? Do you just keep running with that? Do you create something new? In a lot of ways Sam s exploration this season parallels the show s.RT: Justin tackled two big issues within the black community this year: The Tyler Perry effect, in which a person may be thought to perpetuate stereotypes in the eyes of some, but in others estimation is an icon who fights for representation. The other issue being #MeToo through the eyes of black women. What was it like exploring those two storylines?I very much appreciated both of the storylines. I mean, with the Tyler Perry reference, as someone who worked for the man himself and grew up in Atlanta going to Tyler Perry plays and films, I m honestly grateful that Justin got to this point in his life where he can realize that there s room for all of us. I appreciate it because as a Black person in America, we are all so different and we all get to consume whatever content we want. A lot of the reason I was able to be in L.A. during the writers strike or when I wasn t working was because of the work I did with Tyler. And with the #MeToo storyline from every angle, everyone was super supportive. There are a lot of instances in and women s lives — and in men s lives — that they don t talk about because they re not sure if it was taboo or if they just unknowingly put themselves in an improper situation. What [Dear White People] shows is that opening up to people and having people not judge you when you are sharing those kinds of things with them allows for support, or it should. I feel that on so many levels.(Photo by Netflix)RT: Dear White People has been consistently rated Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes but some still take issue with the title. What would you say to those that still cannot seem to get past the name? Ultimately, what makes this show so great is that it exists. It s art that dares to exist. This kind of art couldn t and didn t always exist on any platform. To the people who can t get past something like the title? They truly don t bother me. Because if you can t get past it, then you re not ready for it. And that s OK because the show isn t about that. The show s not trying to force anyone to do anything. The show will always exist. Maybe in 30 years it won t exist on Netflix, but it will be in the canon of television and maybe one day people will be ready for it — even if they aren t now. But for the people who are ready for it and who ve been craving it, they deserve to have it. They also deserve to have it in peace, but you know America.Dear White People seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix.
