The season four finale alone is a masterclass in finding levity in impossible situations. It also features one of TV s most exceptional (and insanely-likeable) ensembles, who vibe so well off of one another that it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “work family.” It’s smart, insightful, ridiculously funny, and absolutely worthy of awards consideration. – Haña Lucero-ColinBroad City 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesBelieve it or not, Comedy Central’s ode to female friendship from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson has never been nominated for an Emmy, despite its critical success — four of its five seasons are Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer (and the first is CF at a not-too-shabby 96%). Broad City has paved the way for plenty of female-fronted comedies currently on TV, like Hulu’s PEN15, Netflix s animated Tuca Bertie, and Pop TV’s just-premiered Florida Girls — so honoring the groundbreaking sitcom in its fifth and final season would be a fitting end for the series. – Jean BentleyTuca & Bertie 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTuca Bertie is for those wondering how their lives will go on after the end of Broad City. Creator Lisa Hanawalt’s buddy comedy goes to some pretty heavy places, but with a more surreal and absurdist bent. There’s an array of talented actors voicing the supporting characters (Steven Yeun! Richard E. Grant! Isabella Rossellini!), but Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish really bring the endearing, sloppy charm of these characters to life. An Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance nom for either would be awesome, but the show’s adult themes and newness probably won’t work in its favor. – Sara AtaiiyanOne Day at a Time 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTalk about a Cinderella story. Imagine this: The critically acclaimed sitcom reboot that Netflix axed following its third season, but which — after a long fan campaign — was saved by Pop, takes home the Emmy for Best Comedy. Gods, wherever you are: Make it happen. It would be a miracle of course, but it would be a well-deserved one. One Day at A Time, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce and executive produced by Norman Lear, has shown that the multi-camera sitcom can still be hilarious, heartfelt, and just as edgy as many of the rougher-edged comedies on streaming and cable. The setup is simple — a working-class Cuban-American family lives in an apartment building where they are friendly with their hipster landlord — but the character arcs and writing are anything but. Watch how skillfully the showrunners blend complex narratives about immigration and gentrification into the laughs, and how organically season-long storylines coalesce. It’s smart, underappreciated stuff. As are the performances, particularly from Justina Machado as the mother trying to keep everything together and Rita Moreno as the scene-stealing live-in grandma, Lydia. – Joel MearesBoJack Horseman 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesSeason 5 gave Bojack his Horseman-aissance after being cast in an edgy TV show. We also got a deeper look at supporting characters Diane, Princess Carolyn, and everyone’s favorite asexual, Todd. Maybe it’s because of and not despite the fact that it’s a cartoon that allows the series to deal so astutely with questions about what it means to be person who’s trying to be better, and the #MeToo movement. – AtaiiyanFleabag 100%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesPhoebe Waller-Bridge is seemingly a lock for a comedy actress nomination, but with the comedy series category overstuffed with hilarious options, we’re unsure if this member of our exclusive 100% club is an underdog or a frontrunner. Look at the contenders: Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, The Kominsky Method, The Good Place, GLOW, Russian Doll, black-ish, Schitt s Creek, Better Things, and on. What’s a Fleabag got to do to get some recognition around here? – Debbie DayThe Good Fight 95%, Outstanding Drama SeriesThis tight and punchy spin-off to The Good Wife is the single best reason to subscribe to CBS All Access (and there are a bunch of very good reasons its competing against, with The Twilight Zone and Star Trek: Discovery available on the streaming service). The super-smart and sometimes surreal legal drama offers fascinating cases — many of which touch on “big issues” in tech and politics in small and intimate ways — and a compelling crew to tackle them. Chief among that crew is Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski, who deserves her Emmy, now!), who featured in The Good Wife, and she’s well-matched by rising star and new mom Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), senior partner Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), and the scandal-hounded young Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), who’s taken a liking to Fentanyl lollipops in season 3. The Good Fight deserves its nomination not just for being the smartest legal drama out there, but for being one of the few shows on TV right now to grapple with — and laugh at — some of the meatiest issues in American politics, law, and society. – MearesBusy Tonight , Outstanding Variety Talk SeriesBusy Philipps translated her personable, intimate online presence into a TV show that felt more like eavesdropping on friends hanging out than a traditional late-night series, which made Busy Tonight’s untimely cancellation sting a little bit more. The actress proved to be both a likable and skilled host, and her accomplishments deserve to be recognized. – BentleyEmmy Rossum, Shameless 82%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesFor years Emmy Rossum has been turning in some of the best work of her expansive career on Shameless, and for years the TV Academy has been ignoring her in favor of William H. Macy’s much showier role as the deadbeat patriarch of a large Chicago family. But Rossum’s performance as the eldest child keeping her siblings together as they struggle to keep their heads above water is at times hilarious and heartbreaking, and what better way to repent for their years of ignorance than by the Academy recognizing her work in her final season on the show? – BentleyCatherine O’Hara, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesCatherine O’Hara has never won an Emmy award for acting, and that, in and of itself, is criminal. O’Hara, who currently stars as matriarch Moira Rose on Canadian Pop TV sensation Schitt’s Creek is as good as it gets. Schitt’s Creek itself deserves all the awards. From the writing to the acting to hair and makeup, the series is genuinely one of the greatest shows to ever hit the small screen, but what O’Hara brings to Moira makes the character so special and the actress so deserving. She has given an unlikable person a depth and a growth that is unseen in on television today. She is eccentric, she is quick-witted, she is wearing a fabulous wig, and she truly deserves to be in the conversation for best actress in a comedy series. – Zoey MooreSuranne Jones, Gentleman Jack 90%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama SeriesNot content to simply act the role, Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones paints her worldly, outsider character, Anne Lister, with bold strokes into otherwise placid scenes of lush 19th–century West Yorkshire, England. When she takes on local graft, she bares her teeth with such palpable menace that in her more vulnerable moments — as when she confronts a skittish lover — her tears break hearts. But in a category stuffed with meaty dramatic roles performed by names more familiar to voters, Jones, like her Lister, seems an upstart with an uncertain fate. – DayStephan James, Homecoming 78%, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama SeriesSam Esmail’s Homecoming was one of the best reviewed series of 2018, and it’s not hard to see why. This taut adaptation of the beloved narrative podcast played out like 11 little shots of Hitchcock — a slow burn that caught fire as the story evolved, back and forth through time, with twists upon twists and some of the finest performances of the year. Julia Roberts has been rightly lauded for her put-upon Heidi Bergman, and Bobby Cannavale gives excellent Cannavalian obnoxiousness as Colin Belfast. But Stephan James, as military veteran Walter Cruz, gives what could be a pretty cold affair its warmth and heart and makes that final diner scene so damn devastating. – MearesAnnie Murphy, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy SeriesYes, Twitter, we know, and we agree: Catherine O’Hara is everything in Schitt’s Creek, and the fact that she doesn’t have four Emmys on a shelf somewhere right next to a collection of Moira Rose wigs is some sort of crime against comedy. But let’s shine equal light on Annie Murphy, who plays the younger socialite-in-the-sticks, Alexis Rose, in the Canadian series. It’s the less showy role — no wigs, no accent — but it’s also stealthily a bit of genius. Murphy plays a ditzy rich girl mid-awakening and every season her characterization deepens. She still gets to nail those insane Alexis lines alluding to a wild past of kidnappings, engagements, and foreign dignitaries, and put out the occasional puppy-dog whine. But she’s also increasingly real, grounded, drawing us into her increasingly tender relationships with her family and Ted. David, giver her an Emmy nom, like, now! – MearesLike this? (Photo by FX)Since its debut three years ago, FX’s Legion has been one of the most compelling, mind-bending, and uniquely heartfelt series to spin out of a comic book. That it focused on a relatively minor character from the X-Men lore is even more remarkable. But by lifting David Haller from the pages of various X-Men titles into a weird and timeless television reality, show creator Noah Hawley was able to examine topics like mental illness, sexual assault, and the end of the world in a unique way.Often, it chose not to connect the dots, leaving that mutant ability for the viewer to use. In its place, it offered musical numbers, a couple of fantastic dance numbers, and David – as played by Dan Stevens – unraveling at least some of the secrets buried in his head. And it all led to a pivotal figure in X-Men history, Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd), and a somewhat obscure, but vitally important background character, Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban).Spoiler alert: This article includes plot details from the series finale of Legion. Stop here if you have not watched the final episode.Considering Charles and Amahl s fight in the comics led to the formation of the X-Men, it would seem the end of Legion contains a beginning — or maybe it really ended with David destroying the world. Let’s take a look at what the ending has to offer. Negahban was kind enough to talk to Rotten Tomatoes about one of the ways the future could change — well, provided there is a future, of course.Why did Everyone Think David Would Destroy the World?(Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)He s done it before.There is a certain ambiguity in the show’s final shot — or limitless potential as it is a baby s smiling face. But David’s role in bringing about an apocalypse is probably the third line on his Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe page after “Professor X’s son” and “Suffers from a mental illness.” Despite being a presence in the comic books for a number of years, Legion’s big moment came in 1995’s Legion Quest story line. The character – waking from a long coma – made a key decision: he was going to travel back to the 1960s and kill Magneto before he formed his Brotherhood. If successful, then only his father’s non-violent philosophy would hold sway and prevent much of the strife done by Erik Magnus Lehnsherr and his followers.Unfortunately, it all went badly and Legion ended up killing Charles Xavier instead of Magneto, unleashing a reality in which the world learned about Mutants decades too soon and Apocalypse, a powerful, ancient, and immortal mutant took control of the planet. Eventually, a team of familiar faces (led by the time-lost mutant Bishop) managed to travel back in time to prevent David s error.Curiously enough, Bishop was able to show David the damage he caused. The troubled mutant apologized and apparently died.The Age of Apocalypse was undone and things went back to normal. Well, mostly, anyway. Blink, a fan favorite from the AoA timeline, eventually found herself crossing the multiverse with a group known as The Exiles, while Dark Beast, a mad-scientist version of founding X-Man Hank McCoy, and a few other characters found their way to the familiar Earth-616.(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/FX)Legion eventually reappeared (as no one stays dead in comics), but his most famous misadventure was always in Hawley’s mind, and a version of Legion Quest was the direction of the series from the first moment David flashed his wicked smile into camera.As Stevens put it when we talked to him on the set back in March, the show is not directly adapting frame by frame any particular Legion story line. But I hope what we re retaining is the playfulness. Changing reality, if not destroying it, is always an aspect of the playfulness.Did David End the World?In a manner of speaking, yes. As his addition to Lessons in Time Travel indicated, the traveler is annihilated in the attempt to change his or her past. The David, Syd (Rachel Keller), Cary and Kerry Loudermilk (Bill Irwin and Amber Midthunder), and Amahl Farouk of the program’s “present” timeline all ceased to exist, as did anyone left there while the Time Eaters munched away. From their perspectives, David ended the world by traveling 33 years into the past — à la Legion Quest. Now, had a fourth season occurred, it is entirely possible we would’ve seen new versions of these characters grappling with echoes from the world before. Much like the way the omnipresent baseline at David’s cult compound invaded the minds of his parents, an image or song (likely from The Who) might have offered Syd or David some clue to the old timeline – much as Bishop survived in the Age of Apocalypse to form his own strike team. Maybe this is why the mainframe version of Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris) remained in stasis back in the present.But with Chapter 27 serving as the conclusion, we’re left with a blank slate. It is easy to consider what it might look like. We will even be charitable and assume the timeline we witnessed on Legion was a darker world where mutants mostly ran scared and had no unifying groups to help them with their powers.Will Charles Form the X-Men?Almost certainly. Upon his return from Morocco, Charles tells Gabrielle (Stephanie Corneliussen) that he always wanted to be a teacher. The implication is clear. Even their home has a certain X-Mansion flare to it. And that change is key in appreciating the series end-state. In the personal sense, Charles and Stephanie will be there to raise David — and help him cope with the mental health issues he inherited from Gabrielle. But in the larger sense, Charles came away from his journey with a new perspective. As Lloyd noted when we talked to him in March, “[Charles] is actually quite lost when he arrives at the Shadow King s palace. But having returned from a trip that saw him disappear entirely in the old timeline, he is now free to fulfill a destiny he never knew he had.Back in the comics, Professor X’s battle with the Shadow King led him to found the X-Men as a safe-guard against mutants who use their abilities for evil. But in Legion s history, the battle seemingly left Charles dead or utterly incapacitated. Altering this outcome may be more significant than David could imagine. Besides giving Charles the opportunity to be part of the a family unit with Gabrielle and David, he will also be able to teach others how to harness their gifts — no doubt after training David — leading to a very different world.(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/FX)We’re also going to note the total absence of Magneto from Legion’s structure as it means TV show David achieved what comic book Legion sought to accomplish: a world in which Charles made things better.Sure, Division 3 will likely observe the Xavier school, perhaps even come into conflict with a group of X-Men, just as they hunted people at Summerland. Nonetheless, Charles will offer something better than the Birds sought to create. Although, if you ve read an X-Men comic or seen one of the movies, you know the tension between mutant and humans will always lead to fighting and giant robots. But at least Charles s attempts with the school and the X-Men offer people like Syd and the Loudermilks something they may not have otherwise: family from an early age.Who Will the Shadow King Be in the New Future?When we spoke with Negahban recently, his thoughts turned toward the key moment in the finale: a handshake between David and the Shadow King. It evolved on set, but reflected the overall tone of the final moments. That is to say, a non-violent resolution after all the pain and trauma.“[Noah] was addressing how people are struggling to see each other, to understand each other, to find themselves, Negahban explained, adding that some of Amahl s apparent villainy in Chapter 26 may have been an expression of an extreme loneliness. Even in his most evil moments, he is feeling very lonely being the most evil person. But as Negahban saw it, the Shadow King s future self gave him something key — an external awareness of his actions. The way that I looked at it is that we can change the future by paying attention to our present or paying attention to what we are doing, how we are responding to other people, the actor said.(Photo by Matthias Clamer/FX)For Amahl, that change came courtesy of the future Shadow King s stylish glasses and the history they contained: When [he] hands the glasses to Amahl — just by seeing what kind of impact we have on our future, we might change our behavior today. Negahban imagines the Amahl who emerges in the new reality will be less lonely and offer his powers to a life of service.“Sometimes we are becoming so full of ourselves, we are becoming so arrogant that we think that we are controlling everything, that we are controlling the situation,” he said of Amahl up until the events of Chapter 27. I think Amahl sees the effect that he s going to have on the future. And at the end when he is thanking [David, Charles, and his future self] for allowing him to see the outcome of his actions, he is getting a second chance to change. That apology echoes David s back in Age of Apocalypse. And while it is easy to imagine a kinder Amahl Farouk finding peace in a new future, did David also earn a second chance?Was David Deserving of His Redemption?When we visited the set, we asked the cast if David deserved redemption. Midthunder, on the eve of shooting the final episode, still felt conflicted about David. Everybody has a story and everybody has a side, she said. Everybody has reasons for doing what they do, but then everybody has the way that it affects them. Meanwhile, she thought Kerry had a clearer point of view on the matter: he deserved to pay for his actions.Irwin, on the other hand, thought that his service to the world — keeping the world going — is something we can all be grateful to him for even if his actions left him as a dubious sort of hero.Lauren Tsai, whose character, Switch, allowed David the opportunity to change his past, thought the overall story of season 3 created enough ambiguity for viewers to question his redemption long after the finale. I think that throughout the story you can believe that David is redeemable, she said. David deserves love and a normal life. But at the same time you can also feel like, Well, he did these horrible things. (Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)In Switch s case, David s exploitation of her powers led to a beneficial transformation. But David s violation of Syd may be the greatest reason to deny him redemption. Even before he erased her memories of his darkest actions, he was causing her psychic damage. So much of her life since she s met this man has been in service to him, Keller said during our set visit. So many young women go through taking on egotistical and stupid and sick men, trying to right their wrongs or fix them. This seemed to be an involuntary course of action for Syd up until the end. In March, Keller expressed a hope that Syd would be able to leave him in peace. But it seems time travel allowed her something better: the chance to protect a David brimming with potential. The David she knew deserved only oblivion, even if he did fix the world. Yes, Joel Schumacher worked across multiple genres without a thematic throughline, with studios and actors quick to praise his behind-the-scenes professionalism, but the director also brought enough verve and dynamic color to his films that Schumacher s name, at his creative peak, did become a kind of brand. A calling card of big Hollywood entertainment with style to separate from the rest. This began in earnest in 1987 with the Brat Pack-adjacent The Lost Boys, the stylish horror/comedy that pulled vampires out of cliff-nested castles and into teen parties and suburbia, a popular concept still seen in the likes of True Blood and Twilight. Having made Kiefer Sutherland a star, Schumacher worked with him again on his next film, Flatliners.Schumacher entered his most commercially viable period in the 90s, starting with 1993 s Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas on a particularly bad Los Angeles day, in a film that has been latched onto as a manifesto of urban rage still discussed and referenced now. Schumacher took the reins for 1995 s Batman Forever after Tim Burton and Michael Keaton left the blockbuster franchise. Some inspired casting (Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, Jim Carrey as The Riddler, and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face), plenty of wild art direction, a brash soundtrack, and just a touch of camp turned the movie into pop-culture phenomenon. A year later, Schumacher released A Time To Kill at a time when anything Grisham, Crichton, and Clancy was being adapted and making a mint at the box office. (Schumacher had previously turned Grisham s The Client into a movie.)Then came the disastrous Batman Robin, which killed the franchise for nearly a decade. Schumacher took full ownership for the movie s failure, claiming that he had steered too far towards what marketing and merchandising wanted out of a Batman joint. A public bomb of this proportion could ve been a career-ender, but his workmanship and a steady line of stars willing to collaborate time and again meant the next Schumacher film was never far off. He worked twice with Colin Farrell, first in 2000 s Tigerland, which introduced the actor to American audiences, and then in 2003 s Phone Booth, which made Farrell a star. Sutherland, back in the saddle, played the villain. Schumacher can be credited with helping launch Gerard Butler s career in full, when he cast him as lead in 2005 s The Phantom of the Opera. In 2007, Schumacher worked again with Carrey for psychological thriller The Number 23. This film will remind audiences of such classics as Alien and The Thing while offering a new voice to the creature feature, with an engrossing tale that challenges your assumptions of the unknown. “Sea Fever is a nightmare you can’t take your eyes off of and can’t stop thinking about after it wraps up,” wrote Collider’s critic Perri Nemiroff. () Right after the theatrical release of The Hunt was cancelled, TIFF presented us with an alternative to the Most Dangerous Game sub-genre, one that combines socio-political commentary with sci-fi and horror elements. RogerEbert.com’s Brian Tallerico described Bacarau, which also played the Cannes Film Festival, as “a crazy genre hybrid that exudes the confidence of the people who made it.” The premise is simple: In a near-future Brazilian village where citizens are sold as prey to bloodthirsty foreign hunter (led by cult-cinema legend Udo Kier), a resistance forms in an all-out war that allows the filmmakers to blend genres and blows minds. Psychotropic drugs are involved.Gundala (2019) 83% What if we were to tell you that the next big superhero cinematic universe wasn’t going to be based on American superheroes, but on Indonesian comic books? Writer-director Joko Anwar unleashed a different kind of superhero on the Midnight Madness crowds of Toronto with Gundala, a superhero origin film that infuses standard tropes of the genre with Indonesian legends and martial art fights that will make you cheer. That Shelf critic Victor Stiff says, “From beginning to end, Gundala delivers fast and furious action and rarely stops to take its foot off the gas.”Knives Out (2019) 97% (Photo by Lionsgate)One of the biggest surprises of TIFF was how universally liked Rian Johnson’s murder-mystery Knives Out turned out to be. The star-studded ensemble not only lets Chris Evans play a despicable character fresh off of hanging up the Captain America shield, but spoofs the classic whodunnit genre. What starts as a simple mystery of the murder of a crime novelist evolves into a laugh-out-loud puzzle-box comedy that will keep your mind spinning as you try to figure out what comes next. David Ehrlich writes for IndieWire: “A crackling, devious, and hugely satisfying old-school whodunnit with a modern twist ”. Lionsgate will release Knives Out on Thanksgiving.The Vigil (2019) 90% (Photo by BoulderLight Pictures)The demonic possession genre has long been associated with bibles and priests, but Keith Thomas’s debut feature, The Vigil, takes the genre and roots it in Jewish mythology making for a novel and terrifying horror film. Breakout performer Dave Davis stars as Jakov, a young man abandoning his Orthodox community to embrace the secular life, who finds himself working as a shomer, watching over the body of a recently deceased member of the community who is haunted by an evil presence. TV Guide’s Oliver Whitney writes that the film is “like an old school radio play that fuses the slow-building paranoia of The Twilight Zone and chilling awe and extraterrestrial sightings of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” This nostalgic sci-fi thriller was picked up by Amazon just before the film’s premiere at TIFF.Synchronic (2019) 79% (Photo by Rustic Films )Filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have made a career out of blending different genres to create something entirely new, while also providing emotional stories stuffed with characters we connect with – their 2018 flick, The Endless, is Certified Fresh at 93%. This time they got Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan together to play the two friends at the core of a time-bending crime thriller involving two paramedics that get their lives turned upside down by a series of crimes involving a mysterious synthetic drug that lets you experience new realities. Synchronic is the duo’s most dramatic and emotional work yet, but it still delivers a fun and exhilarating experience. Writing for The Playlist, critic Jason Bailey says, “Synchronic can best be described as egghead indie sci-fi, in which the ideas are as exciting as the effects.” This is a sci-fi thriller that will stick with you long after you leave the theater.La llorona (2019) 96% Unlike that other film about the Latin American horror myth, Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona is 100% rooted in Latin American history and culture, which adds an extra layer of horror to this already chilling tale of an aging general accused of genocide who starts seeing visions of a terrifying ghost haunting his estate. Bustamante blends utilizes stylized cinematography and effective scares that make this the surprise horror hit of the festival. Critic Carlos Aguilar writes for The Wrap that La Llorona is “a purposefully somber cry for amends and acknowledgement permeated in phantasmagoric allure.” This is the type of genre film that proves you can have a strong message while still delivering entertaining thrills and scares.The Platform (2019) 79% Imagine a prison where the cells are vertically stacked, and the only food given to prisoners is lowered down from the highest levels – feeding those on the upper cells but leaving those below violently starving. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform combines poignant and relevant social commentary about the distribution of wealth and the difficulties of convincing people to do good, with the nasty, wicked horrors of Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer. Writing for Slashfilm, critic Meredith Borders says, “Starvation, cannibalism, heinous violence and no small amount of feces aside, The Platform makes spending time in The Pit a pretty intriguing enterprise.” This is a movie that is as grotesque and shocking as it is surprisingly funny. For 2021, DC FanDome was a nearly four-hour livestream updating fans on the latest DC films, TV series, comics projects, and video games. Even just watching it for the film and TV content was a task worthy of Earth’s Mightiest Mortal, and categorizing the announcements is the sort of thing you might set Brainiac 5 to do. Nevertheless, we tried to live up to Shazam and Brainy, watching all of it and compiling everything related to film and television at DC FanDome 2021 from the look of Blue Beetle’s costume to Ace the Bat-Hound’s drinking habits. To say there is a lot of DC Entertainment material on the horizon is an understatement. Just take a look at what we learned:DC’s Film Roster Is Amazing: The Flash, Black Adam, And The Batman (Oh My!)DC Entertainment made a big push with its feature film slate this time around. With two films shooting, one completing production, and two in pre-production, there was a lot to talk about even if only The Batman had a proper trailer to unveil during the event.FanDome began with a look at Black Adam, featuring a scene of the title character (played by Dwayne Johnson) being awakened from millennia of slumber by archeologist Adrianna Tomaz (Sarah Shahi). Of course, her team of explorers came with an armed detachment, so bullets start flying and Adam calls down the lightning. Literally. Combined with some behind-the-scenes footage, it at least confirms that the film – in development for over a decade – will actually come out next year.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also offered some behind-the-scenes footage and a first-look at Black Manta’s (Yahya Abdul-Manteen II) upgraded costume. Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted a black variant of Arthur’s (Jason Momoa) classic costume. Shazam: Fury of the Gods also unveiled a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel with co-star Asher Angel confirming the end of principal photography. The film sees Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu playing goddesses arriving in Philadelphia to tangle with the Shazam Family. It s due out in 2023.(Photo by DC)Over on the HBO Max side of things, the principal creatives and stars of Batgirl and Blue Beetle offered the briefest of teases, including design art of the title characters’ respective costumes and a broad sense of what the films will be. Batgirl star Leslie Grace said the character is a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined… She’s sincere and wants to prove herself.” Co-director Adil El Arbi also confirmed the character will have red hair and use a cowl as part of her outfit (some recent Batgirl costumes favor goggles instead).“It’s going to be crazy, but it also has feelings,” Blue Beetle screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer said of the project. “It contains all that’s great about Blue Beetle.” Things like the scarab, Jaime Rodriguez’s (Xolo Maridueña) costume, and his family were referenced as key elements Dunnet-Alcocer and director Angel Manuel Soto wanted to bring to the screen. “He’s a Mexican-American kid who wants to be a part of this world, but he’s hitting the same obstacles a lot of us face,” the screenwriter said. He also added that the closeness of family is part of what sets him apart” from other superheroes – noting he has no way of keeping his suit or powers a secret from his parents.(Photo by DC)And as for the suit? “I know for a fact we have the best suit, and I haven’t seen it yet,” Maridueña said.There is one animated feature on the roster, DC League of Superpets, which sees Johnson giving voice to Krypto the Superdog while Kevin Hart voices Ace the Bat-Hound. In a brief clip, Ace can be seen, well, relieving himself while Krypto looks on in dismay. The film will also feature the voices of Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves. It is set for release on May 20, 2022.(Photo by DC)But perhaps the most impactful presentation outside of The Batman trailer was the first-look at The Flash. The long-in-development film which has missed half-a-dozen release dates at this point – genuinely looks amazing from the footage director Andy Muschietti compiled for FanDome. For one thing, Barry’s (Ezra Miller) new suit(s) looks incredible, and the teases of Supergirl (Sasha Calle), Batman (Micheal Keaton), and a second Flash (also Miller) provided some of the best moments of the whole four-hour event. Capping it off: a shot of Barry examining the Batmobile as it hides under a tarp.Curiously, though, director Patty Jenkins offered no updates on Wonder Woman 3 while chatting with Lynda Carter about the character s 80th anniversary, other than to reconfirm she is working on it.HBO Max Is The New Center Of The DC MultiverseIf there’s one thing this year’s FanDome made clear, it is that HBO Max is the new hubworld for DC’s expansive multiverse. Beyond Batgirl and Blue Beetle’s eventual debuts on the service, Pennyworth – previously an Epix exclusive – will be moving to Max for its third season late in 2022. The previous two seasons will become available to subscribers early next year.Additionally, most of the DC Universe orphans Max adopted Titans, Doom Patrol, and Harley Quinn will return for subsequent seasons next year with fourth seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol confirmed at the event. Harley Quinn will return “sometime in 2022,” according to Harley (Kaley Cuoco) herself. The last of the rescued DC Universe shows, Young Justice, debuted two episodes of its fourth season (subtitled “Phantoms ) on Max immediately after FanDome concluded.If all of those shows weren’t enough, Peacemaker’s premiere date was also announced during FanDome: January 13, 2022. Creator James Gunn also unveiled a teaser trailer which suggests Peacemaker (John Cena) may actually grow a little on his next adventure. That said, the star said the hardest part of playing the character is “becoming a super a hole. I’m usually a regular a hole.” Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed five, extending his time in the DC Multiverse. In fact, Cena expressed a wish to continue playing Peacemaker in subsequent seasons, which may mean more of Gunn’s sensibility in the future.Although HBO Max’s focus is on the DC superheroes, it will also be the home of DMZ, a four-part limited series based on a comic published by DC Comics now-defunct Vertigo imprint. Ava DuVernay directs Roberto Patino’s adaptation of the book, which stars Rosario Dawson as an outsider who may tip the scales in the US’s second civil war.But for all the hour-long live action DC shows calling HBO Max home, Green Lantern was conspicuously absent from FanDome. The program, from Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, is set to star Jeremy Irvine as Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott and Finn Wittrock as 1980s fan-favorite Guy Gardner and sees the characters in their respective time periods facing social issues and weird space threats. Also absent: Berlanti’s Strange Adventures anthology series, first announced at HBO Max’s initial public unveiling, and any mention of J.J. Abrams’ live-action projects.Batman: The Animated Series Is Getting A Spiritual Successor(Photo by Everett Collection)One project Abrams did promote, though, is the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader. Produced and developed by Abrams, Batman: The Animated Series’ Bruce Timm, long time DC animation executive producer James Tucker, and The Batman director Matt Reeves, the series will go back to what Timm called the “original principles” of Batman: TAS with fewer broadcast restrictions. Set in the early days of Batman’s war on crime, it will feature a version of the character who uses Bruce Wayne as a mask to hide his activities as the Caped Crusader.“It’s just Batman,” added Reeves. “No Justice League.”And because the series takes place so early on in his career, animated Batman audiences will see him in a lower-tech situation than usual. According to Tucker, “We find him discovering these things.” That means viewers may see several iterations of the Batmobile and, quite possibly, the trial-and-error involved in creating Batarangs. Tucker added that as the series begins, no one trusts the Batman and vice-versa. He also teased that some of the Dark Knight’s traditional relationships may not form. “Nothing is assumed in this series,” he said.Reeves and Timm agreed the series will lean heavily in to the 1940s noir style, but the characters will be more modern in terms of inclusivity. Timm also added that the program will be, overall “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series.” It is unclear when the series will debut, but it will be available on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max.Caped Crusdaer isn’t the only word on DC animation, though, with an HBO Max Superman animated series, My Adventures with Superman, in production, the preschool-targeted Batwheels preparing for release, the currently running Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and a stellar upcoming lineup in the dependable DC Animated Movie direct-to-video range.Indeed, DC FanDome was the occasion to debut a trailer for Catwoman: Hunted, an upcoming DC Animated Movie featuring Elizabeth Gillies as Catwoman and Stephanie Beatriz as Batwoman. The pair must team up to take down the organization known as Leviathan in a stylish, anime take on the characters. Other DC Animated Movies set for release in 2022 include Green Lantern: Beware My Powers, Battle of the Super Sons, and a compilation of the 2022 DC Showcase shorts headlined by Constantine: The House of Mystery. Matt Ryan will, of course, reprise his role as magician and con man John Constantine.Before all of that, though, is the release of Injustice, a DC Animated Movie based on the video game and comic book of the same name. During FanDome, a clip was released featuring Joker’s (Kevin Pollak) “masterpiece” – a brutal act of violence which sets Superman (voiced by Justin Hartley) on a dark path. The scene is surprisingly grim and offers those less familiar with the DC Universe Animated line an idea of the sorts of films available. Injustice debuts on home video platforms this Tuesday.Gwendoline Christie Leans Into The Bowie Look For Sandman’s LuciferAlthough not part of the HBO Max lineup, The Sandman received a little recognition via the debut of Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer in a first-look photo. The image recalls the Bowie-esque appearance the Prince of Darkness assumed in his first Sandman comic book appearance. Its unclear if Christie will keep the look in subsequent appearances or evolve like her comic book counterpart. Curiously, though, Lucifer’s initial androgyny gave way to a more masculine countenance as The Sandman’s story wore on. Perhaps that will also be part of the changes writer Neil Gaiman and his collaborators have in mind for the adaptation of his comic book.Shortly after the Lucifer reveal, Gaiman took to Twitter to clarify that the series will debut on Netflix sometime in 2022. Initial messaging about the series suggested it could launch in late 2021, leading to some confusion and Gaiman’s exasperation in the tweet.DC’s other Netflix-based show, Sweet Tooth, was represented by star Christian Convery answering fan questions. The program, already renewed for a second season, will also remain on Netflix.Barry Will Finally Get Gold Boots On The Flash TV SeriesIn one of the earliest announcements of the event, The Flash TV series star Grant Gustin revealed Barry is finally getting gold boots like his comic book counterpart. “It’s always been the final element that I think has been missing from our suits,” Gustin said. “The suit we have now is the closest we have to a lot of the [comic book] iterations … but I always thought the gold boots would be the final touch.” DC released a close-up image of the boots and a look at the suit with the footwear added. As Gustin intimated, the boots have long been a running joke behind the scenes. They will debut when The Flash begins its eighth season in November.Beyond the long-awaited kicks, the Arrowverse was also represented at DC FanDome via an assortment of special videos. Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie and Rachel Skarsten teased Batwoman and Alice’s state-enforced team-up while the cast of Supergirl looked back their six seasons. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow celebrated 100 episodes in 100 seconds and the cast of Superman and Lois presented a tour of the Kent farmhouse.And although not technically an Arrowverse show (it takes place on the Post-Crisis Earth-2, after all), Stargirl took an extended look at this week’s upcoming episode, which sees Courtney (Brec Bassinger) trapped in the Shadow Lands, where she runs into the Golden Age Dr. Mid-Nite (Alex Collins).But to cap off the Arrowverse presence at FanDome, Naomi star Kaci Walfall debuted a first look at the program, in which she stars as a high schooler who discovers her connection to the DC Multiverse is more staggering than she can imagine. The original USA Network series, which premiered back in 2006 and wrapped in 2014, followed Shawn as he utilized his impressive observational skills and memory as a Santa Barbara–based crime consultant to trick people into thinking he’s the real deal. But the series succeeds because it does just the opposite and never tries to be something it’s not. Putting affable goofiness to the forefront is what earned Psych it’s devoted “Psych-O” fan base and is what ensures the laughs are going to be hearty with the July 15 film sequel treatment. Why you should watch it: Part of the joy of watching Room 104 is bracing yourself for the unexpected. Luckily, the series’ anthology-like narrative means you never quite know what you’re going to get. Genre, tone, time, cast — basically everything but place — changes with each episode. While the diversity allows the viewer to watch it out of sequential order, we still recommend you watch starting with episode 1 if only to appreciate the bigger picture the Duplass brothers are creating. Plus, they’re frequently credited with influencing the young minds and sensibilities of some of today’s biggest Hollywood stars. Muppets Now, premieres on Disney+ on July 31. A24 s immigrant tale Minari (Certified Fresh at 198%) followed closely behind with 10 nominations, providing competition for Mank in Best Picture, Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-jung), and Best Director (Lee Isaac Chung) as well.
