亚博APP软件采用百度引擎6(Baidu 2)Disney+ has the potential to utterly change the streaming market. First hinted at several years ago and announced in 2017, Disney s bid to enter the field seemed to spur on its quest to purchase the 20th Century Fox assets and separate itself from Netflix. One potentially important difference, depending on the details, is price: .99. Netflix s lowest tier is available at .99 (one screen at a time with standard definition). Also, at launch, Disney+ will be available to U.S. consumers in a bundle with ad-supported Hulu and ESPN+ for .99 per month, CEO Bob Iger announced in a Walt Disney Company earnings call on August 6 — that is, the same as the mid-tier pricing plan for Netflix (watch on two screens at a time with HD available and video downloads available on two phones or tablets). Netflix s premium plan is priced at .99 per month. Now that the platform will launch in just a few months, the shape of Disney+ at launch is becoming clearer – as is its roadmap for the first few years of its life. With competitive pricing, key feature-film brands, and an impressive library, Disney’s streaming service could become a major competitor to Netflix. And now with Fox in the family, the potential is even bigger. Come take a look at what we know about Disney+ and how it might change your viewing habits in the 2020s.Disney+ s Price and Launch DateStarting November 12, 2019, subscribers can enjoy 7,500 episodes of both current and concluded TV shows (like The Simpsons), 25 original series — including Star Wars series The Mandalorian at launch — 10 original movies and specials, 100 recently-released Disney theatrical films, and 400 movies from Disney’s library for .99 a month (or a yearly price of .99). That price point will definitely make people give Disney+ a try. Then there is the bundle with Hulu and ESPN+ at .99, giving subscribers a whole lot to love about this new streaming service.Consumers can subscribe to Disney+ directly at DisneyPlus.com or via in-app purchase from the following partner platforms and devices (dependent on country):Amazon (Fire TV Devices, Fire TV Edition Smart TVs, and Fire Tablets)Apple (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV, and fully integrated with the Apple TV app; customers can subscribe to Disney+ via in-app purchase)Google (Android phones, Android TV devices, Google Chromecast and Chromecast built-in devices)LG Smart TVs with webOSMicrosoft (Xbox One)Samsung Smart TVsSony / Sony Interactive Entertainment (all Android based Sony TVs and PlayStation®4)Roku (Roku® streaming players and Roku TV™ models)For a full list of supported devices visit here.See The Launch List below for the full roster of film and show titles.Disney+ Will Be Home Disney’s Family Programming, Including Pixar Films(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures )The service will focus on the more family-friendly aspects of the Disney empire, including its Pixar Animation Studios films. Other film content includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars movies, and the animated library of the Walt Disney Studio itself. The entire Pixar library,” all “animated Disney classics from the vault,” and more recent features like Moana and Frozen debut on the platform across the first year, Kevin Mayer, Disney chairman of Direct-to-Consumer International, explained at the service’s D23 presentation in August. He also mentioned that movies like Bedknobs and Broomsticks will also be available alongside 5,000 episodes of Disney Channel and Disney Jr. content. And once on the service, this material will be there “permanently,” according to Mayer. The potential here is huge, especially when one considers just how vast Disney’s film and television holdings really are. Beyond the obvious Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney animation content, there is the wealth of ABC family sitcoms, older archival material from the ’50s and ’60s, and even PG material from 20th Century Fox, including PG-13 Avatar. Not all of it will be available at launch, of course, but the content Disney+ will contain is staggering. So whether your nostalgia compels you to watch That’s So Raven, Malcolm in the Middle, or the odd episode of The Wonder World of Color, Disney+ will eventually have you covered.Meanwhile, Disney’s less family-friendly material will likely find a home at Hulu, which Disney now controls after agreeing to buy Comcast’s stake in the service. Expect the Alien films and classic Fox fare like Dr. Dolittle and Cleopatra to appear on that service before too long.See The Launch List below for the full roster of film and show titles.Disney+ Will Feature at Least Three Star Wars ShowsThe Mandalorian(Photo by Disney+)As streaming services will need “killer app”–style content at launch from now on, Disney+ s first announced exclusive series is The Mandalorian, a stand-alone Star Wars series from Iron Man director Jon Favreau. As he previously revealed, the series will feature all-new characters making their way in the galaxy after the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi, but before The First Order’s deadly attack on the New Republic in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Into that milieu, audiences will discover a Mandalorian gunfighter operating on the Outer Rim, where the worries of the New Republic barely exist and violence still forms the rule of law.The Mandalorian will star Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte, according to StarWars.com’s official announcement. Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) is directing the first episode (and executive producing alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson), while other directors will include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).Untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi Series(Photo by Industrial Light & Magic/Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation/Courtesy Everett Collection)In August, multiple outlets reported that Ewan McGregor was in talks to potentially return to the franchise as Obi-Wan Kenobi, reprising his role in a limited series on the streaming service after a potential prequel film about the character fell apart in 2017. The event series could consist of up to six episodes, according to original source StarWarsNews.net. McGregor famously took over the role of Ben Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels from Alec Guinness, who played Luke Skywalker s Jedi mentor in the original trilogy.McGregor appeared on the D23 stage to confirm the rumors with a simple “yes.” The series will be set in a time contemporaneous with the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story, according to a timeline shown during the D23 presentation. We are really close, we have all the scripts written, we are ready to start shooting next year, Kennedy said.(Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney)McGregor added that after four years of starts and stops, it was wonderful to finally say he was back. The new series takes place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan delivering the infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead, StarWars.com reported. At the end of September, StarWars.com also announced that Deborah Chow, who directed episodes of The Mandalorian, will helm the series.“We really wanted to select a director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the Star Wars saga,  Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said. Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in The Mandalorian, I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”The series will be written by Hossein Amini (The Alienist, Drive). Chow, Amini, and McGregor will serve as executive producers alongside Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen), and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President Production Jason McGatlin will serve as co-producer.RELATED: Everything We Know About The Mandalorian Untitled Cassian Andor Series(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures/Lucasfilm)The second series, which has not yet been named, will feature Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Diego Luna reprising his role as Rebel spy Cassian Andor. Alan Tudyk will also return as Cassian’s droll droid accomplice K-2SO. Considering the events of Rogue One, the series will be a prequel to that film and chart his earlier operations with the still-growing Rebel Alliance.During the Disney+ presentation at D23, Kennedy referred to the program as a “spy series,” suggesting a certain tone for the production. As it is a prequel to Rogue One, Luna quipped “we’re going to look younger” and said the first season will be “10 hours or more.”The service will also be the exclusive home of Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ seventh season. The animated series was something of a victim of Lucasfilm s transition into the Disney family, but its dedicated fanbase was happy to learn it would continue on Disney+ when executive producer Dave Filoni announced its return at Comic-Con back in 2018. The new season will debut in February 2020.Each show illustrates Disney s dedication to the Star Wars brand and the understanding that programs set in that universe will get people to subscribe.See The Launch List below for the full roster of film and show titles.Avengers Heroes Loki, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon, and Winter Soldier Will Star in Their Own Disney+ Series(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios will enter the television format for the first time on Disney+ by producing a number of limited series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige’s promotion to Chief Creative Officer of Marvel, the television and film offerings will be more entwined than ever before. The initial three series developed for the platform are key components of the MCU’s Phase 4 timeline. Additionally, Feige recently clarified characters from the forthcoming She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel series will make their way into Marvel movies after they debut on Disney+. As someone once said, “It’s all connected,” and the Disney+ series will be required viewing for Marvel fans.RELATED: 21 Most Memorable Movie Moments: The Snap from Avengers: Infinity War (2018) The Falcon and the Winter SoldierNew concept art from #TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier from the #DisneyPlus doc Marvel Studios: Expanding the Universe pic.twitter.com/2bbHWw63Uw Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) November 12, 2019The first of these will be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan in the title roles. Picking up from the events of Avengers: Endgame, the series will reportedly deal with Sam (Mackie) deciding to pick up the shield and name Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave him in the film’s closing moments. Emily VanCamp will return as Sharon Carter, while Daniel Brühl will reprise his role as Zemo, the man who brought down the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, while Wyatt Russell will play John Walker — the U.S. Agent of Marvel Comics fame. Our first look at Wyatt Russell s character John Walker in #TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier pic.twitter.com/KHcuVsP3sE— Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) November 12, 2019Will he stoke the flames of unrest around the Falcon’s ascendancy as the new Cap? The series, which began production in the first full week of November 2019, is set to debut in August 2020.WandaVisionNext will be WandaVision with Elizabeth Olsen returning as Wanda Maximoff – aka the Scarlet Witch – and Paul Bettany as Vision. But how can this be? Vision died in Avengers: Infinity War and was not one of the lucky ones revived during the Second Snap. Olsen once said the series will see Wanda and Vision in a “1950s” setting, which suggests the series may be taking its cues from the 2015 Vision comic book series. In that story by Tom King and Gabriel Walta, Vision created his own ideal nuclear family. It goes very wrong. At the D23 presentation, writer Jac Schaeffer said the show will be “half-sitcom” and “half MCU adventure.” A video revealing The Dick Van Dyke Show as a major influence only strengthened the impression that Wanda may be wishing herself into another genre altogether. And whatever Wanda does to make her own idyllic life, a grown up Monica Rambeau (played by Teyonah Parris) will be there to bring her back to the present. At D23, Feige announced Kat Dennings had joined the cast — reprising her role as Thor’s Darcy Lewis — with Randall Park also reprising his role as Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Agent Jimmy Woo. And to accent the sitcom feel, Kathryn Hahn will play the “nosey neighbor” in that laugh track reality. The events of the series will tie directly to the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will also feature Olsen. The series, reportedly also in production, will arrive on Disney+ in early 2021.(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Tom Hiddleston will return as the God of Mischief in the 2021 limited series Loki. The story will follow the Loki who escaped from custody in Endgame with a divergent copy of the Space Stone. It seems he will also get access to time travel as early photos see Loki in a 1970s New York. Divergent timelines are a hell of thing and this will presumably be the series to examine what it means for the MCU going forward. Also, Feige recently mentioned the series will create repercussions that will be felt in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, further strengthening the ties between the Disney+ programs and the films. What If …?Marvel Studios will also provide Disney+ with an animated series. Based on the classic Marvel Comics title What If …?, each animated segment will address a different outcome to key MCU events – probably through the lens of those pesky divergent timelines. As an example, the first episode will ask “What if Peggy Carter took the super solider serum instead of Steve Rogers?” The answer will feature the voice of Hayley Atwell as a super-strong Agent Carter and, presumably, the voice of Evans as a 98-lb Steve who becomes the first Iron Man thanks to Howard Stark. Tying the series together will be Jeffrey Wright as Uatu the Watcher, the host of the What If …? comic book and the viewer’s guide into the strangest of the Marvel series for the streaming service, which will debut in mid 2021.HawkeyeBrand new #Hawkeye concept art from #DisneyPlus s Marvel Studios: Expanding the Universe pic.twitter.com/Ad8KXxO2bi Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) November 12, 2019Jeremy Renner will play Clint Barton once more in Hawkeye. The last of the Phase 4 Disney+ series will see Clint meeting and training a new Hawkeye named Kate Bishop. The part has not yet been cast, but the character is a fan favorite from comic books like Young Avengers and her own Hawkeye comics. It will premiere in 2021.Ms. MarvelBased on the Kamala Khan character created in 2013 by Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona, the series will introduce the popular teen Inhuman to the MCU. And as Feige put it, “You will meet her in her Disney+ series and see her in our films.” A commitment to what Ms. Marvel fans have wanted for ages.Moon KnightThe subject of many rumors during Marvel’s alliance with Netflix, Disney+ will serve as home to a Moon Knight series. As Feige explained, it is an “action adventure series” featuring the Marvel character Mark Specter. “He was left for dead and he may or may not be infused with powers from the moon god,” he explained “Or he might be crazy.”She-HulkBut in a move which thrilled the D23 audience, Feige revealed She-Hulk will join the Disney+ lineup. “Bruce Banner is no longer the only Hulk in the MCU. She’s a Hulk and she’s a lawyer,” Feige said.Disney+ Will Feature a Monsters, Inc. Series, Muppets, New Lizzie McGuire, and Other Series Based on Disney and Fox Properties(Photo by ©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection)Outside of Marvel and Star Wars, Disney+ will rely on some of its best-known properties to entice Disney fans into subscribing. Series based on Monsters Inc. and The Mighty Ducks are both in development. A new version of High School Musical based around one school s production of High School Musical, is also on its way.A new Muppets short-form series, Muppets Now, will see the Jim Henson characters in new, “unscripted” situations.Monsters at Work stars Ben Feldman as a recent graduate of Monsters University — he graduated scareum-cum-laude — who goes to work at Monsters Inc. on the day it switches from scaring kids to making them laugh; a skill set he definitely lacks. Aisha Tyler also stars as his mother. The service will also feature a revived Lizzie McGuire series with Hilary Duff reprising her role from the original Disney Channel series. Lizzie is about to turn 30, but that animated teenager is still bouncing around in her head. Original creator Terri Minsky is also on board. And for fans of Disney history, the service will also feature Ink Paint, a docu-series centered on the women who made many of the Disney animated classics possible with little or no recognition for their work as members of the studio s Ink Paint department. Another untitled docu-series is also in the works. In the realm of features, Disney+ will be the exclusive home of the upcoming Lady and the Tramp live-action remake. Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux will voice the title roles, with Yvette Nicole Brown, Benedict Wong, and Janelle Monáe set to lend their talents to the production. The service will also revive Touchstone s Sister Act series with a third installment, although, according to Whoopi Goldberg, her participation may be limited to a walk-on cameo as the film takes the concept of a witn

(Click to enlarge.)After six intense rounds of voting, we finally have our winner in the HBO Original Series Showdown, and thanks to all of you who voted, Game of Thrones has officially taken the crown as the Greatest HBO Original Series! In the end, the final match-up between GoT and Westworld wasn t particularly close, with the former taking a whopping 74% of the vote and reaffirming the immense popularity of the fantasy series, even despite the final season s massive dip in both critical (58% on the Tomatometer) and audience reception (31% Audience Score). All things considered, Westworld made it much farther in the bracket than we here at RT expected, especially paired up against classic heavy hitters like Deadwood, Veep, and The Wire, but that s exactly why we run these brackets: it s fun to see how the final results upend our expectations.Once again, big thanks to everyone who participated and voted in the bracket! We always look forward to seeing the great debates and discussion that these showdowns inspire. Marvel, still limping out of bankruptcy, was more than happy to sell the film rights to the studio when they briefly held them again in 1999.This led to Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, its sequels, and the short-lived Amazing Spider-Man film cycle in 2012. By the early 2010s, Marvel Studios’ success with a cinematic universe was noted by Sony, and the company plotted its own similar endeavor with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, setting up their ambitious plan… at least until that film proved to be a creative and financial misstep.Sony, Marvel Studios, and Disney soon made a deal to introduce Spider-Man into the MCU. According to reports, Disney received a small percentage of the gross profits for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. And, from the view of Marvel fans, things were as exciting as swinging from a Manhattan skyscraper. But as corporations never prove to be easy bedfellows, a crisis was brewing.A Duel of Corporate Titans(Photo by Jay Maidment / © Columbia Pictures / © Marvel)According to Tuesday’s reports, Disney was seeking a co-financing deal with Sony for two additional Spider-Man films. Co-financing means a bigger piece of those precious profits in this case, to the tune of a 50/50 split. Sony was not interested in changing the arrangement, instead looking to maintain the profit sharing established with Homecoming. Initial reports suggested both companies dismissed these offers immediately without any hope of resolving the issue. This should not be a surprise, as both studios are quite secure in their positions. Avengers: Endgame is the biggest movie ever, while the successes of Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse leaves Sony in a better position than when they made the Homecoming deal.Since fans love Spider-Man in the MCU, it s easy to dismiss Sony s objection as hubris, but we also imagine some Disney-haters are waving the Sony banner right now.By late afternoon on Tuesday, there were signs the companies may sit down and continue negotiations, but if no agreement can be reached, it looks like Spider-Man will once again be off in his own world while the MCU goes on without him.Oh, and you’ll probably have to explain all of this to your relatives when they ask you why Spider-Man isn’t an Avenger anymore.Marvel Without Spider-Man(Photo by Marvel Studios)As we keep track of Marvel Studios’ calendar fairly regularly here at Rotten Tomatoes, we noticed something interesting in its Phase 4 calendar of films and Disney+ limited series: the complete lack of Spider-Man. Since Phase 4 only covers the next two years of Marvel Studios releases, this didn t seem too strange during the Marvel panel at Comic-Con. Now, Spidey’s absence screams across that screenshot of the release calendar. It seems they knew this was a possibility. So what can Marvel Studios do if they really lose Spider-Man?Well, a fairly obvious way to go is to just ignore it for the time being, since the Phase 4 films have nothing to do with him. The first one, Black Widow, is reportedly set before he made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War; two more are meant to establish new characters – The Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; and the two sequels, Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, will presumably take place far from the Manhattan where Peter was outed as Spider-Man and blamed for the chaos in Far From Home.As it happens, that outing by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) may provide all the explanation Marvel Studios needs to remove Spider-Man from the story: he’s in deep cover until he can clear his name.(Photo by Jay-Maidment / © Columbia Pictures)Of course, it s not a truly tidy solution, as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was counting on Spider-Man to be part of whatever army he’s building in space a plot point that reflects Feige’s own love for the character. All the talk in Far From Home of Spidey being “the next Iron Man” means something even if the character can t really be the next Tony Stark. The implication throughout the film was clear: come Phase 5 or Phase 6, he would be holding the metaphorical Infinity Gauntlet, if not leading a new group of young Avengers himself. He was on a course to be the central MCU hero, and right now, that status is threatened by the dispute.Perhaps that role will fall on Shang-Chi’s shoulders, should Spider-Man be snapped back by Sony. And looking at the production calendar now, it almost seems as though Marvel Studios embedded a contest of champions just in case they lose the Webhead. Could Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Sersi of the Eternals, or Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) easily take Peter s place? Then there s the worst case scenario: the MCU moves on without ever mentioning Spider-Man again. No explanation is offered because they do not have the rights to give one. In that case, there would be a permanent sense of loss that the films could never acknowledge.Spider-Man Without Marvel(Photo by © Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Sony, meanwhile, always had a plan. It s right there in the name of its Academy Award-winning animated feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As mentioned above, the studio has been hot to build a cinematic universe of its own since the successes of Marvel s Avengers and its own The Amazing Spider-Man. At the time, the plan was to produce films centered on each member of the Sinister Six, the ensemble of Peter’s biggest foes whose formation was teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That plan got shoved to the backburner when Amazing 2 killed all the goodwill audiences had for the cinematic Spider-Man and Sony agreed to lend Peter Parker out to Marvel.Sony soldiered on with a Venom film – which turned out to be a surprise success – and Into the Spider-Verse, a true creative triumph that earned Oscar gold. But even before the one-two punch of Venom and Spider-Verse, Sony was already in development with films based on Spider-Man characters like Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Morbius the Living Vampire. The latter s feature debut, Morbius, is slated for release on July 31, 2020. Black Cat and Silver Sable s journeys to the big screen, however, are taking a lot longer than planned. As it happens, they were supposed to share the spotlight in a film called Black and Silver, but that disintegrated as Venom neared release, and the two will now appear in separate projects.(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)Should a deal never be struck between the two studios, Sony has a clearer path than Marvel does, in some respects. Director John Watts and star Tom Holland technically work for them, not Marvel. The scene-by-scene creative merits of Homecoming and Far From Home remain in place, even if a third film cannot reference what happened to Peter in any of his MCU adventures. We assume any mention of Tony Stark, the Snap, and the Blip will be struck from the record. It may prove to be a bigger stumbling block than the studio thinks, though. So much of the story that set Holland s Peter Parker apart from the two previous incarnations is baked with MCU ingredients. Tony took the place of Uncle Ben as a father figure and motivating force in Homecoming, and his ghost haunts Far From Home. Peter’s connections to Stark Industries, the budding relationship between Marisa Tomei s Aunt May and Jon Favreau s Happy Hogan, the five-year gap, and Mysterio’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) motivation in Far from Home all turn to dust if Holland’s Spider-Man should find himself marooned in Sony s Spider-Verse. It still leaves the character outed, but without any underlying reasons why it matters. The silver lining for Spider-Man fans is that Sony will, of course, continue to make Spider-Man movies. They will also likely build up MCU-style crossovers until it feels confident about making that Sinister Six movie.Without An Agreement, Fans Lose(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)Should the companies fail to reach an agreement, fans will, in principle, lose the third Spider-Man film promised by Far From Home’s mid-credit scene. They will also lose whatever Feige and Marvel had planned for the character in upcoming phases, but that third film – which we jokingly called Spider-Man: Homeless at one point – will be a materially different film so much so that we cannot imagine the franchise would continue to use home as a key word in the subtitle.Marvel will still have its MCU and Sony will have its Spider-Verse, but this jockeying for profits will result in a Spider-Man film starring Holland with all of the MCU texture scrubbed clean. Despite his great talent in the role, Holland s journey as Peter Parker will be missing key aspects of his backstory, which new writers will have to work around. Also, Watts clever use of the MCU as a setting will also be lost; in its place will be the much shallower world of Venom. At least, for the moment, this is still a mid-credit cliffhanger and not a funeral by a lake. Sure, the outlook isn’t so good, but things seemed grim for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at one point, too. Because of its success, Marvel Studios gets almost everything it wants admittedly, that s a questionable prospect in its own right and it may yet prove persuasive enough to make its parent company and Sony shake hands. Even in the span of one afternoon, the story has changed from “Spider-Man is leaving the MCU” to “anything is possible.” And, as in their films, Marvel Studios always banks on the hope of what is possible.Like this? Congratulations to #HoneyBoy director @Almaharel for winning the First-Time Feature Film directing award at last night s #DGAAwards! pic.twitter.com/cvu0qSiQzu Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) January 26, 2020Let s talk about Free the Work – the searchable database you founded where people can find underrepresented creators to work with. It comes off the back of your organization, Free the Bid, which you developed to help people get work in commercials. Why did you set up these organizations — what need were you looking to fill?Har el: I guess I was very much like a struggling immigrant and an independent filmmaker, trying to make my mark and develop my voice and find a way to sustain myself. And I ve realized that a lot of the filmmakers that I grew up admiring — you could call them like independent American auteurs, like Spike Jonze — a lot of the ways some of these filmmakers supported themselves was through directing commercials. I always was wondering about it as somebody that has no safety net to fall on and no way to support myself financially and never went to film school. And I was like, how could these people exist? And how do they make it work between films? And realizing that it s such a big part of how male filmmakers often support themselves – is by directing other things. I wanted to make sure that the doors were open to women. When I got in myself and managed to direct some commercials and win awards for that, I realized that on every triple bid that I was on, I was always the only woman that s even allowed to bid. [Editor s note: a triple bid is where an advertiser, agency, or client requests bids for a project/assignment from three creatives.] So Free the Bid started before Free the Work by creating that kind of system of commitment from advertising agencies and brands to allow a woman to bid. And it definitely made a huge change in the advertising world in terms of the amount of women that are directing.I think what we re seeing now is, as with everything, that women of color and Black women haven t gotten the same opportunity as white women. But that s something we ve been really putting a lot of focus on since we launched Free the Work, which has expanded to take care and to represent and find opportunities for underrepresented creators that are not just women, but people of color and people from the LGBTQIA community, people with a disability. Ageism I would say is a huge thing, too, both for women and for men, but especially for women. So all of those things come together to really make sure that more women get an opportunity to be considered, to be hired, and also to sustain their careers when they re not making a movie, when they re not on a production. I think just seeing the amount of work that does get made, and then often doesn t get recognized, is another story that I ve also focused on in the past few years.Eliza Scanlen and Toby Wallace in Shannon Murphy s Babyteeth. (Photo by © IFC Films)That’s why I get such joy when I see some of the films on this list below. Because for instance, a film like Babyteeth, which is, to me it s like my favorite film of the year I would say. Eliza Scanlen gives an incredible performance; Toby Wallace is I think one of the best new actors that I ve seen. Michelle Lotters and Ben Mendelsohn, it s like four perfect performances. And it s directed by a woman, Shannon Murphy, it s her first film. It s written by Rita Kalnejais, it s her first script, a theater playwright. You have this film that has a first-time script writer and first-time director that had four incredible performances and definitely got some amazing reviews. And that s, to me, really exciting to see that that happens. You have three films on your list of Women s History Month recommendations that are fairly well known, but they re so different, being Raw, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, and Beach Rats. It s so incredible to me, especially Beach Rats, because that to me is my favorite Eliza Hittman movie; I just felt like what she did and what Harris Dickinson did in that movie was just so It didn t feel like cinema. It just felt like you were taking a slice of this person s life. And then Céline Sciamma with that sweeping epic romance in Portrait, and then on the other side, Julia Ducournau with this completely inventive horror-movie and coming-of-age tale, Raw.Har el: And exceptional visually her film, too, Raw. It has sequences in it that are just extremely cinematic and moody and transcend anything you can think about in the context of horror, in terms of your relationship to your body and blood and all of those things. It s really such an impressive film. And I believe that Beach Rats just pierced the screen in terms of the way it became one with reality. And it was amazing. Portrait of a Lady, the ending itself, that last scene with that long shot of her watching, it s unforgettable. It really stays with you.Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant in Céline Sciamma s Portrait of a Lady On Fire. (Photo by © Neon)It’s another film that, by the way, has such a charisma. It s so easy to have charisma when there s, I don t know, a lot of tension and fireworks and budgets and all of those things. But sometimes you see a film that just has this inherent charisma and soul. And just these things that it s almost like meeting somebody when you see this film, you know what I mean? You re not just watching a film, you re meeting somebody.Absolutely.Har el: You re not really meeting the filmmaker, or not only meeting the filmmaker, you re meeting the moment that brought them together with all of these people who were on this crew and made this film together. But you re just meeting it. Like, I don t know, it s like this feeling. I can t really explain it and I have it sometimes.By the way, speaking about sticking the landing, the film Or — which means “light” in Hebrew — it has one of my favorite actresses in the world; her name is Dana Ivgy and she was absolutely brilliant. And that film s ending has f ked me up for years. I still think about it. If you want a good landing, watch that film, because you re watching the whole film, you think you re watching one thing, and then in the end, you realize what you witnessed. And you re a witness when you see this film. You re a witness. It s amazing. It s unbelievable.William Eadie in Lynne Ramsay s Ratcatcher. (Photo by © First Look International)I also want to make sure I touch on Lynne Ramsay because she illustrates one of the more difficult sides of female filmmaking right now, and that is the gap between films. Because she did Ratcatcher in 99, and then Morvern Callar, and then it was almost 10 years before We Need To Talk About Kevin, and it kind of shows this disparity. Male filmmakers: one good indie film and they re directing a Marvel movie. Which has changed more recently, but she did Ratcatcher and it took almost another decade before we really got her consistently working in Hollywood.Har el: Ratcatcher is such a seminal movie to so many of the filmmakers that I know. I mean, I know that Natasha Braier [the cinematographer who shot Honey Boy], almost every time she shoots a film, she watches Ratcatcher before. And I saw it when I was obviously really young and I couldn t even articulate what I saw in it. I mean, I couldn t really say what I see in cinema until I made cinema in a way. Because, I don t know, I ve never studied it and I wasn t very theoretical about it. I was just very raw about it. There was something about Ratcatcher, though, that literally opened my mind to what s possible in terms of getting into somebody s head and mood and feelings through watching the screen. It’s just a film that I m sure informed so much of what I did in Bombay Beach and a lot of my work, because it just has that nuance. And at the same time, it s just visually yeah, it s just arresting. Again, it has that charisma and that kind of unexplained feeling that you are transported somewhere.Alma Har el s Honey Boy is available on Amazon Prime; Bombay Beach is available on Vudu and FandangoNOW.Alma Har el s 10 Films – And One Series! – For Women s History Month亚博APP软件d is more dramatic than the 1995 film, which starred Alicia Silverstone in the lead and Stacey Dash as the right-hand gal Dionne. (Photo by Jessica Miglio/™ & © DC Comics)But do you need to see that movie first?“It would help people know some of the characters in the sequel. On the other hand, people who watch the first movie are not going to want to watch another one.” Mike Ryan, Uproxx“It rewards returning fans while being accessible to new or casual viewers. As a result, The Suicide Squad is a delicious, deviant and delightful watch for everyone.” Molly Freeman, Screen RantIs it just like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie but R-rated?“To his credit, Gunn doesn’t simply repeat the Guardians of the Galaxy formula.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“It feels like a happy medium between the all-ages workplace comedy of the Guardians movies and the snarky misanthropy of his heroic satire Super.” Alonso Duralde, The Wrap“This comic-book based feature takes a decidedly different tone with its smart, enlightened sentiments. It doesn’t move or breathe like his previous projects.” Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/™ & © DC Comics)Is Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn better in this one?“While there s no Birds of Prey references, this is definitely the new, improved Harley and she s a much stronger character for it.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“Robbie, now so at home in the role of Harley Quinn, gets to continue her narrative of self-actualization begun in her spin-off outing.” Clarisse Loughrey, Independent“We get to see a different side of her character…she’s not only a scene-stealer but carries the whole damn movie.” Zehra Phelan, HeyUGuys“This is hands down Robbie’s best performance as Harley, and the best written and directed Harley seen on the screen to date.” Tessa Smith, Mama’s GeekyAre there any other character standouts?“The prize for the single funniest character might go to Nathan Fillion’s T.D.K., who seems destined for internet meme stardom.” Matt Singer, Screen Crush“You’ll want to adopt King Shark.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“King Shark and Ratcatcher will likely emerge as fan-favourites, but it s honestly impossible to single out a weak link, due in no small part to the excellent performances.”  Mark Cassidy, ComicBookMovie.com“Daniela Melchior delivers a star-making performance as Ratcatcher 2, carrying some of the film’s most poignant moments and its weirdest superhero gimmick with ease.” Jenna Anderson, ComicBook.com“So many characters only get brief moments to communicate who they are but dare I say, not even one of them doesn’t feel fully fleshed out.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/™ & © DC Comics)How is the monstrous villain, Starro?“Starro totally delivers as an off the wall villain. Leave it to James Gunn to take a giant alien starfish, make it a villain, and not have it look ridiculous. Starro looks TERRIFYING.” Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky“It s actually difficult to imagine a more perfect antagonist for this film. Equal parts preposterous and terrifying.” Mark Cassidy, ComicBookMovie.com“Not only glorious to behold in an am I really seeing this? way, but [it] also comes complete with some subversive twists that few other mainstream comic book movies would go near.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“The movie joins the ranks of those spectacular but slightly absurd neo-kaiju movies in which the towering monster that fills the screen is candy for the child in you.” Owen Gleiberman, VarietyJust how funny is the movie?“It ought to be illegal just how hysterical The Suicide Squad is.” Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies“The most hilariously funny feature of the year.” JimmyO, Jo Blo’s Movie Emporium“The Suicide Squad is the sort of movie where comedy accompanies brutality, leading — at its best moments — to combinations of screaming and laughing.” Alonso Duralde, The Wrap“Much of the best and most enjoyable comedy comes from the Bloodsport’s exasperation.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/™ & © DC Comics)Just how violent does it get?“This is the most insanely violent superhero blockbuster yet, making Deadpool look kind of sweet.” Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com“The Suicide Squad is brutal in such a way that I started to feel my limits for gross-out violence being tested…[but] never in danger of getting bored.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“No wilder than the sort of the thing you got in Deadpool or the more outré parts of The Dark Knight, but driven by an invigorating embrace of f**k-it-all no-futureness.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety“Never in a million years would I have guessed some of the most disgustingly gory scenes in a film could be so freaking beautiful at the same time.” Tessa Smith, Mama’s GeekyIs it more than just a bloodbath?“The violence and the outrageousness alone aren’t what makes The Suicide Squad tick – it’s Gunn’s understanding of the transgressive power of the outsider figure.” Clarisse Loughrey, Independent“The finale reveals a picture with much more on its mind than you would’ve ever expected.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/™ & © DC Comics)Will we end up caring who lives and dies?“It’s clear that Gunn cares for each of these characters, bringing to The Suicide Squad some of the earnest empathy that he honed in his Guardians movies.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“It has actual stakes. Characters actually die…which adds a sense of worry and dread for the characters we find ourselves latching onto.” Mike Ryan, Uproxx“Yes, some deaths are inherently funnier than others, but there s also genuine emotion in some of the exits that few comic book movies manage.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“James Gunn also knows that behind every tidal wave of blood is a beating heart; character deaths mean nothing if you don’t care about them.” Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors“And when there isn t the character development to make a death impactful, Gunn uses the film s R-rating to ensure it packs a punch to the gut, if not the heart.” Molly Freeman, Screen RantAre there any problems at all?“Gunn’s latest creation is not without moments that drag, but when it pops, it pops brilliantly.” Alonso Duralde, The Wrap“You certainly feel a bit of whiplash with the breakneck pace and constant jumps between horror, comedy and drama.” Nicola Austin, We Have a Hulk“One too many flashbacks lead to a disjointed feeling, not added interest as the device would suggest. Pacing is a bit of an issue.” Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/™ & © DC Comics)Does it end with a bang?“The Suicide Squad finishes strong…the rare superhero movie where the third act is actually its best.” Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist“Perhaps I’m overestimating its final act’s prowess, but the comics fan inside was giddy with excitement.” Jeffrey Zhang, Strange Harbors“The third act feels like most other superhero third acts and it clumsily sets up its requisite future projects.” Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineWill this go down as one of the most memorable comic book blockbusters?“The Suicide Squad is sure to end 2021 as the year s most entertaining blockbuster.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“[It’s] the most bizarre mainstream blockbuster of all time.” Mark Cassidy, ComicBookMovie.comThe Suicide Squad is in theaters and available on HBO Max from Friday August 6, 2021.On an Apple device? On Sunday night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) handed out the 2019 Golden Globes and, as is often the case with the Golden Globes, they delivered some surprises. Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody, Glenn Close, and Green Book didn t walk into the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night favored to win, but each walked out with a Globe statuette.  Check out our recap of the best moments from the ceremony here.Owing to its position on the calendar and ability to host a star-studded awards ceremony, the Globes are often looked at as a measuring stick for awards season. But with such a small voting body it’s unwise to put too much faith in the Globes results as a predictor of Oscar winners or nominations. No slight on the HFPA, but a group of 90 international film journalist cannot be expected to predict the voting habits of 7,258 industry professionals. Since the Academy expanded the Best Picture category to include up to 10 nominees in 2009, only 59% of Golden Globe Best Picture nominees have earned Oscar nominations.Looked at more closely, it can seem that the Golden Globes are more a reaction point than any sort of clear indicator. A snub by the HFPA can spark indignation that helps, or damages, a film or performer s Oscar chances. Last year Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri won the GG for Best Drama and the backlash that was already brewing to that film finally bubbled over, likely turning some Oscar voters toward Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which later won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The same could be said for La La Land vs. Moonlight in 2016; Moonlight won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama, but was shut out in all the other categories – snubs that only added supporters to its bandwagon come Oscar time. With all this in mind, what do Sunday night’s wins and losses mean for this year’s awards landscape?A Star Dims, But Only Somewhat(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )A Star Is Born has fizzled but not completely faded; save the win for Best Song, the film was shut out of many awards, notably Best Actress Drama for Lady Gaga. It s not out of what is still a very wide-open Best Picture race, but it needs some wins. Look to this weekend’s Critics Choice awards for added momentum, but if Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper fall short again then the movie s chances of big Oscar wins will be er, shallower.Best Supporting Actor Is Still Undecided (Photo by © Fox Searchlight)Can You Ever Forgive Me? s Richard E. Grant lost to Green Book s Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor, but we think that has a lot to do with Ali s having been shut out of a GG nomination for Moonlight a few years ago (and going on to win the Oscar). With a healthy number of wins from the critics guilds, Grant is still very much in contention. Same can be said for First Reformed s Ethan Hawke (for a Best Actor nomination), Eight Grade s Bo Burham (writing and directing), and Roma s Yalitza Aparicio (Best Actress), none of whom were nominated for the Globes but each of whom have enough momentum with critics groups to keep them top of mind with Academy voters.King Continues Her Reign(Photo by @ NBC)Regina King’s winning streak continues – after a slight bump with that bizarre SAG snub. King s work in If Beale Street Could Talk is the most honored performance of 2018 – with nearly 40 nominations and 20 wins – and her Oscar win is looking more and more assured. With momentum and buzz being just as important as the performance, King’s rousing acceptance speech was a final word to silence any naysayers (we pity the conductor who tried to play her off).

mics character — set to debut after the network’s winter break. 2020 will also see the debut of Stargirl on DC Universe, the return of Doom Patrol, and one or two more surprises. But looking at the upcoming Fall season, there’s still plenty to keep us busy. The Arrowverse will be facing the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover while Riverdale forecasts a world without Jughead. It is a time of Walkers, Titans, and a couple of new women making their mark on the Comics on TV landscape. So let’s take a look at what the 2019 fall season has to offer. And as we did last year, we’ll offer some comic book recommendations with thematic or direct ties to each show.Titans: Season 2 (2019) 81% Returns: September 6 on DC UniverseWhat to Expect: Once Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) breaks free of Trigon’s (Seamus Dever) grasp, he will reopen Titans Tower and reestablish the team with Rachel (Teagan Croft), Kori (Anna Diop), Gar (Ryan Potter), Jason (Curran Walters), and Donna (Conor Leslie). Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly) may also join the new team, but their status is a little more up in the air following their fight with the Nuclear Family. Meanwhile, Deathstroke’s (Esai Morales) children Jericho (Chella Man) and Rose (Chelsea Zhang) escape from his grasp to train with the Titans. It is a move fraught with danger as the legendary assassin is the reason Dick ended the team five year ago. What any of this has to do with the Superboy (Joshua Orpin) who escaped from Cadmus is anyone’s guess.Suggested Reading: The New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Ernie Colon, and Adrienne Roy () % Debuts: September 25 on ABCWhat to Expect: Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) is a walking trainwreck. She’s not over what happened in Afghanistan, and she’s not all that great at keeping a job. But her actual skill set makes her the perfect private investigator for the greater Portland, Oregon, area. When not on a case, she also makes sure her brother Ansel (Cole Sibus) has a roof over his head and gets to his job at her pal Grey’s (Jake Johnson) new bar. Things may finally turn around for Dex, but her old war wounds may need to bleed a little bit more before they can heal.Suggested Reading: Stumptown Vol. 1 by Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth, and Lee Loughridge.Batwoman: Season 1 (2019) 80% Debuts: October 6 on The CWWhat to Expect: Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) returns to Gotham City when she learns her ex-girlfriend Sophie (Meagan Tandy) has been abducted by a new gang themed after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It is not an easy return as she and her father (Dougray Scott) are not on the best of terms and she can barely tolerate his wife, Catherine (Elizabeth Anweis). But as Bruce Wayne’s only living relative, Kate has strong ties to the city and even to Wayne Tower itself, where she may find the tools to remind Gotham that it is defended.Suggested Reading: Batwoman: Elegy by Greg Rucka, J.H. Williams III, and Dave StewartThe Walking Dead: Season 10 (2019) 77% Returns: October 6 on AMCWhat to Expect: Following the Whisperer massacre at the fair, the various Virginia communities plan for war. Michonne (Danai Gurira) will also make her final appearance on the series during the season. Kevin Carroll and Juan Javier Cardenas join Darryl’s band as Virgil and Dante, while Thora Birch joins the Whisperers as Gamma.Suggested Reading: The Walking Dead Vol. 25: No Turning Back by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stenfano Gaudiano, and Cliff Rathburn.Supergirl: Season 5 (2019) 92% Returns: October 6 on The CWWhat to Expect: Leviathan is coming. The shadowy criminal organization is causing plenty of trouble over in the DC Comics Universe, and it should be no different on the Arrowverse’s Earth-38. Meanwhile, Lena (Katie McGrath) has it out for Kara (Melissa Benoist) now that she knows the truth. Will Leviathan use her anger and her technology against Supergirl and the world? Meanwhile, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) will be saying his goodbyes to National City while Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) will be making a return to the 21st Century. On the couples front, both Nia (Nicole Maines) and Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Kelly (Azie Tesfai) will face challenges in their newly formed relationships ahead of the “Crisis,” which will dramatically change the show in the second half of the season.Suggested Reading: Event Leviathan by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex MaleevBlack Lightning: Season 3 (2019) 89% Returns: October 7 on The CWWhat to Expect: The Black Lightning characters will finally meet the Arrowverse during the “Crisis” in December. But before that, Jefferson (Cress Williams) must face the immediate threat of Markovia and its attempts to create a metahuman arms race. The conflict with Markovia may even take the Pierces out of Freeland for a time. Meanwhile, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) will continue to look for Grace (Chantal Thuy) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) will become more confident with her powers. Also, Khalil (Jordan Calloway) will presumably find his way out of the pod.Suggested Reading: Black Lighting: Brick City Blues by Tony Isabella, Eddie Newell, Matt Hollingsworth and othersThe Flash: Season 6 (2019) 85% Returns: October 8 on The CWWhat to Expect: Finally answering fan wishes for at least the last few seasons, The Flash will feature two big bads split across the season. The first will be Bloodwork (Sendhil Ramamurthy). Initially introduced as Dr. Ramsey Rosso, an acquaintance of Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), he will join Team Flash before his grudge against them explodes into violence. His story will lead The Flash into “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” For Barry (Grant Gustin), the first half of the season sees him facing this prophecy from The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett): for the Multiverse to survive, Barry Allen must die. And in another “Crisis” connection, Tom Cavanagh will play Pariah in addition to a “swashbuckler” version of Harrison Wells featured throughout the season. And for the Ralph Dibny (Harley Sawyer) fans, he will be working the Sue Dearborn case throughout the year, but it is unclear how quickly he will have his fateful meeting with her.Suggested Reading: Crisis on Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, and othersRiverdale: Season 4 (2019) 84% (Photo by The CW)Returns: October 9 on The CWWhat to Expect: The season 4 premiere will feature a special tribute to Luke Perry, who played Archie s (KJ Apa) dad Fred Andrews and died of a stroke in March. Perry’s friend and former costar Shannen Doherty will guest star in a special role in the episode, entitled “Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam.” The series will then dive headlong into the gang’s senior year in high school. As Principal Weatherbee “ascended” with the rest of The Farm at the end of season 3, Riverdale High will get a new lead administrator in the form of Kerr Smith’s Principal Honey. Meanwhile, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) will find himself transferred to a private school where he joins the writer’s program ran by Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer). How it leads to the Spring Break flash-forward — and Jughead’s absence in that scene — is anyone’s guess. Also, Veronica (Camila Mendes) joins Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) in a maple rum business. The series will also cross over with new series Katy Keene when it debuts in winter 2020.Suggested Reading: Jughead Vol. 1 by Chip Zdarsky and Erica HendersonArrow: Season 8 (2019) 95% Returns: October 15 on The CWWhat to Expect: In its final 10 episodes, Arrow will see Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) find resolution with people from his past and head off on an impossible mission given to him by The Monitor. Meanwhile, in 2040, Mia (Katherine McNamara) and the New, New Team Arrow face a new challenge as Conner Hawke (Joseph David-Jones) takes on his adoptive brother J.J. (Charlie Barnett) — the natural born son of John Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla Micheals (Audrey Marie Anderson). For his part, Diggle will remain at Ollie’s side through “Crisis,” which will consume the eighth episode of the season. Episodes nine and 10 will form the conclusion of the Arrow story.Suggested Reading: Zero Hour: Crisis in Time by Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, and Gregory WrightMarvel's Runaways: Season 3 (2019) 83% Returns: December 13 on HuluWhat to Expect: Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), Molly (Allegra Acosta), Gert (Ariela Barer), Chase (Gregg Sulkin), Karolina (Virginia Gardner), and Nico (Lyrica Okano) are more divided than ever with Gert kidnapped by her own father (Kevin Weisman) and Chase and Karolina being saved as a main course for the aliens who survived the destruction of Jonah’s ship. Also, one of the aliens is probably inhabiting one of the other children. Meanwhile, the other Pride parents are free to follow their own ambitions (for the most part), Morgan La Fey (Elizabeth Hurley) will make her way out of the Dark Dimension and the Runaways will have a run in with Freeform’s Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger (Olivia Holt).Suggested Reading: Cloak and Dagger: Runaways and Reversals by Brian K. Vaughn, Adrian Alphona and many, many more.
Of all the directors on this list, the one that will likely benefit most from this strange season is Eliza Hittman. Her drama, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a BBC production distributed by Focus Features shortly after the pandemic hit, is a quiet indie about two girls who travel from Pennsylvania to New York to seek an abortion. It cements Hittman as more than just an indie darling and pushes her forward as one of the best up-and-coming female directors in Hollywood. The film is a difficult watch, which also makes it difficult to promote with glitzy cocktail parties, given its serious subject matter not that anyone is throwing any glitzy cocktail parties anytime soon. But it’s undeniably moving, and it has serious social and political resonance – both of which rank high with Academy voters. Following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a renewed focus on the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, Never Rarely Sometimes Always can build a compelling narrative on why it is the movie of the moment and worthy of recognition. In a typical year, a low-budget indie with no stars that premiered in the first half of the year would have difficulty staying in the conversation. However, as voters will have time and opportunity to watch titles from the comfort of their homes, it’s reasonable to think they will be able to see smaller hidden gems like this.Chloé Zhao

It s worth noting that Angel of Darkness, while technically a sequel to the first season, works as its own standalone story. Brühl s Dr. Kreizler reunites with his rag-tag investigative cohorts Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), now running her own detective agency, and New York Times journalist John Moore (Luke Evans) as they work to solve a string of baby murders amid a backdrop of political and cultural turmoil. The themes of women s rights, police brutality, and racism create a conflicted, yet timely, story here.Ahead of the show s return, Rotten Tomatoes spoke with Brühl about how his character has evolved since the series premiere, whether the show s disturbing subject matter gives him nightmares, how the themes explored in The Alienist: Angel of Darkness are relevant today, and if the COVID-19 shutdown delayed his work on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.(Photo by TNT)Aaron Pruner for Rotten Tomatoes: This season focuses a lot on Sara Howard, while Kreizler is cultivating his own relationships. Has Kreizler, as a character, changed in how you interpret him since you first took on the role?Daniel Brühl: Knowing about Sara s psychological skills, Laszlo Kreizler is eventually willing to share power and to give in and to let Sarah Howard be in charge of that new mystery and of that new case. He becomes, emotionally, a more open-minded man thanks to the friendship with Sara and John and eventually even finds a kindred spirit, someone who he finds very fascinating. It s so interesting because my wife is an alienist in real life. And she told me that many times the most brilliant psychologists you know, become very nervous when they have to deal with, you know, their own introspection and their own inner life. So they may be brilliant in, you know, analyzing their environment, and yet, they have problems in expressing what they are going through. The theme of child murder continues in season 2. Is it tough to separate yourself from the dark subject matter of the show?Brühl: It didn t affect me that much when we were shooting the actual show, but watching it now gives me nightmares. I m the father of a little boy and expecting my second baby to arrive soon. The fact that this show this time around deals more with motherhood and fatherhood, respectively, felt more universal. It was also interesting to realize how engaged my wife was when she watched the show. She said that it resonated more with her than the first season.(Photo by Nelly Kiss/TNT)This is a period piece, yet the issues explored in the series continue to feel quite timely — women s rights, sensationalism in the news, police corruption, income inequality, and racism. What message are you hoping viewers will take away from watching?Brühl: It is very sad to see how long it takes for mankind to really make a change. It s funny how history goes in waves. I wouldn t say that it always goes in the wrong direction. Sometimes we advance, sometimes we evolve, and then, sometimes we go three steps back. So it is sadly fascinating to see that a story set in 1897 and a book written about that period that was published in the 1990s still feels so current. And what the story tells us is that it always takes a couple of courageous liberal modern minds to make a change. Unfortunately, mankind needs to have the worst things happen in order to move on. So the eruption that, fortunately, we witness these days internationally, due to the things that happened in the U.S., gives me a bit of optimism, because that avalanche, that eruption, and that message that racism has to stop, is being heard loudly and clearly at the moment. I hope that, finally, we will change and, hopefully, carry on doing so. We always have to hope that we will learn something from history.

The Star Wars feature film that was not even remotely mentioned (to the point that one might have assumed it might be cancelled) was the project announced in September, 2019 as being produced by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige (though Kathleen Kennedy did clarify that it was a ways off ). We can now guess that maybe Disney just wasn t quite ready to announce this week s news, which is that Feige s Star Wars project is now to be written by Rick and Morty (Fresh at 94%) producer Michael Waldron. Besides Rick and Morty (and HarmonQuest), Waldron has two more direct connections to Feige and Marvel, as he is also writing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), and was also the head writer on the upcoming Disney+ show Loki (expected to start streaming in May, 2021). In related news (sort of), Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot also recently signed with Warner Bros. for Wonder Woman 3, although it s unclear if it will be produced before or after Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, or what it might be about. As for Waldron, he is also expected to work on season 2 of Loki, which is also news because Loki was previously thought to be a one-season miniseries.Other Top Headlines1. EX MACHINA DIRECTOR RECRUITS I M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS STAR FOR MEN (Photo by Mary Cybulski/©Netflix)Although English filmmaker Alex Garland may still lack the name brand recognition of some of his colleagues, his science fiction work both as screenwriter (28 Days Later, Sunshine) and director (Ex Machina, Annihilation) has consistently been Fresh on the Tomatometer for 20 years. For his next film, Garland may be switching things up a little bit, as the project called Men is described as a low-budget horror film set in the U.K. about a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her husband. The two main stars will be Irish actress Jessie Buckley (Netflix s I m Thinking of Ending Things, Certified Fresh at 81%) and England s Rory Kinnear (probably best known as the current iteration of MI6 suit Bill Tanner in the James Bond franchise). Men will be distributed by A24, which was also the company behind Ex Machina.2. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL TO RETURN AS SPAMALOT MOVIE (Photo by Everett Collection)Plenty of comedians make the jump from TV to film, but few have a hit that is held in quite as high esteem as 1975 s Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Certified Fresh at 97%). In 2005, a stage musical called Spamalot, adapted from the movie by Monty Python member Eric Idle, made its debut on Broadway, and to date, the musical has earned over 5 million during its various worldwide runs. In 2018, 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to make a Spamalot movie, but the project appeared to stall after the Fox film properties were acquired by Disney in 2019. Instead, Paramount Pictures has now stepped in to actually produce the Spamalot movie, which arrives at Paramount from Fox fully developed, with a screenplay by Eric Idle and the musical s choreographer Casey Nicholaw attached to possibly make his feature film directorial debut (depending upon which gets produced first, Spamalot or the movie adaptation of the Mean Girls stage musical). It s not yet known if any of the various stage performers will reprise their roles in the movie, but some of those possible stars include Tim Curry (Arthur), Hank Azaria (Lancelot), and David Hyde Pierce (Sir Robin).3. HBO STAR NOMA DUMEZWENI TO PLAY NEW CHARACTER IN THE LITTLE MERMAID (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)As Disney continues to adapt their classic animated movies as new live-action films, their approach has varied as to exactly how closely the premise and casts stick to the original film, from pretty spot on (The Lion King, The Jungle Book) to quite, quite different (Mulan, Aladdin). Until this week, most of the casting we d heard about The Little Mermiad suggested something closer to the former, as all of the confirmed characters seemed to be directly from the original 1989 film (Certified Fresh at 93%). To refresh the reader s memory, the announced cast so far includes Grown-ish co-star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Javier Bardem as Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Melissa McCarthy as the evil octopus sea witch Ursula. To that list, we can now add Noma Dumezweni (HBO s The Undying), except that she will be playing an entirely new character who wasn t in the 1989 original. Walt Disney Pictures has not yet scheduled The Little Mermaid, but we can probably presume it will be sometime in either 2022 or 2023. Dumezweni previously worked with Disney as Miss Penny Farthing in 2018 s Mary Poppins Returns (Certified Fresh at 79%).4. TIFFANY HADDISH TO STAR IN ALIEN INVASION FILM LANDSCAPE WITH INVISIBLE HAND (Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)One of the stories that broke during the Weekly Ketchup s three week holiday break was about Brad Pitt s Plan B making a deal with MGM for their adaptation of the dark, surreal comedy sci-fi novel Landscape with Invisible Hand, set in a future after the Earth has been invaded by an alien force. (This news came three years after Plan B first acquired the rights to the novel in 2017, but slow development isn t that unusual.) The MGM deal may have helped Landscape with Invisible Hand continue to move forward, because we can also already now report that Tiffany Haddish is in final negotiations with MGM and Plan B to star in Landscape with Invisible Hand, although it s unclear which role she will play. The premise is described as being about two human teenagers who come up with a scheme to make money in Earth s devastated econonmy by broadcasting their dating life to the fascinated aliens, except that they eventually come to hate each other [but] can t break up without bankrupting their families. Landscape with Invisible Hand will be directed by Cory Finley (Bad Education, Certified Fresh at 94% and Thoroughbreds, Certified Fresh at 86%).5. CARY ELWES JOINS GUY RITCHIE S SPY THRILLER FIVE EYES (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and everything else going on the world, there are probably some movies that are getting released to much more obscurity than they would ve otherwise. One such film is Wrath of Man, the latest crime drama directed by Guy Ritchie (Aladdin, The Gentlemen, Sherlock Holmes), whose films are usually much more prominent (and that s without mentioning the film s star, Jason Statham). For his part, Ritchie is moving forward with another project, a spy thriller called Five Eyes, which will start filming at locations in Turkey and Qatar later this month. We ve known for a while that the two leads in Five Eyes will be Aubrey Plaza and Jason Statham (his fourth collaboration with Ritchie), and as of this week, we can add Cary Elwes to the cast as well. Elwes will play the espionage operator who teams up Statham s MI6 super spy with Aubrey Plaza s high tech expert CIA agent.6. CAN ANYONE SOLVE HOW TO TURN RUBIK S CUBE INTO A MOVIE?(Photo by Vladimir Smirnov/Getty Images)It s been a few years since we regularly saw movie pitches being sold for non-narrative toys and games like Viewmaster, Play-Doh, and Pez, but thankfully, most of those are either still spinning around in development or have since been shelved. Unfortunately, The Emoji Movie (Rotten at 7%) still happened. With all of that in mind, the latest toy to get its own movie deal is the puzzle box and nostalgia artifact that is the Rubik s Cube. The producers appear to be name checking Netflix s The Queen s Gambit in an effort to demonstrate how a movie like Rubik s Cube can be successful. Rubik s Cube will be a joint production between Hyde Park Entertainment Group (Blue Valentine, Machete) and Endeavor Content (Hamilton, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Hyde Park is also developing a TV game show based on Rubik s Cube.7. RAY FISHER S CYBORG NOT GETTING HIS OWN MOVIE AFTER ALL (OR A ROLE IN THE FLASH) (Photo by ©Warner Bros. Pictures)It was just a little over six years ago that Warner Bros. held their big DC Comics movie event, during which they announced a few movies that did happen (Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman), at least one we re still waiting on (The Flash), and a few that didn t (Cyborg, Green Lantern, Justice League Part Two). The Cyborg movie was actually originally supposed to be released over 8 months ago, but the last week has seen a flurry of stories bout Cyborg and that last delayed film that s actually happening, The Flash. It all started just before the New Year, as Cyborg actor Ray Fisher continued to speak out against the way he felt Warner Bros. handled his reports of misconduct during the Justice League reshoots, which led to Fisher announcing that he was dropping out from ever playing Cyborg again. Soon after, Warner Bros. confirmed that Cyborg s cameo role in The Flash had been written out, and that the role would not be recast. WarnerMedia also put out a statement last night confirming that longtime DC Comics writer and producer Geoff Johns is still working for the company (reversing a Ray Fisher social media statement). Even without Cyborg, The Flash should still be a superhero-filled adventure, with the expected cast so far including Ezra Miller as The Flash, Billy Crudup as his father, and at least two different Batmen (Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, despite some recent rumors to the contrary). Warner Bros. has scheduled The Flash for November 4, 2022, wrapping up a year that is expected to also include The Batman, Aquaman 2, and Black Adam.On an Apple device? Meryl Streep, that’s who. Queen Meryl is at the top of her game as the grieving mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry in the second season of the HBO drama, and asserts her power in the premiere with a primal scream that went viral across social media.20. “F k the Police” from Us (2019) 93% (Photo by Claudette Barius / © Universal )The biggest laugh in Jordan Peele’s mind-bending horror hit, Us, comes during one of its most gruesome scenes. Elisabeth Moss’s Kitty is crawling on the ground having been attacked by a doppelgänger of her husband, and – her voice just audible as blood presumably pools in her lungs – she calls out to her Google Home-like device to “call the police.” The device misunderstands her and switches from “Good Vibrations,” which has been playing in the scene, to N.W.A.’s “F k the Police.” Universal Pictures film music president Mike Knobloch told IndieWire that the scene could have gone a different way – the punchline was originally going to be a song by The Police. The movie was tested, though, and audiences responded to the N.W.A. song. “I think it became very clear at a critical point in the process that N.W.A was a much more satisfying choice,” Knobloch told IndieWire.19. Sweet Birthday Baby from Russian Doll: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Netflix)The first time Natasha Lyonne’s Nadia walked out of her friend’s bathroom during her weeknight birthday party, the peppy piano of Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” seemed like a fun retro soundtrack cue. The 20th or the 30th however, and the tune became a little more ominous — as did her pal Maxine’s (Greta Lee) slurred greeting of “sweet birthday babyyyy.” The call became a signature for the show, which was one of Netflix s biggest and most acclaimed hits (Certified Fresh at 96%) of the first half of 2019. 18. Kit Harington Discovers Dany s Fate in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch (2019) 100%(Photo by HBO)Emilia Clarke knew the fate of Daenerys Targaryen when she sat down for the table read of Game of Thrones’ final season, but many of her costars didn’t. Not even her on-screen beau/nephew Kit Harington, whose tearful reaction when he learned what would happen — and how he would be involved — was a rare behind-the-scenes look into the making of season 8, which received a mixed reception from critics.17. Selina sells Gary Out in Veep: Season 7 (2019) 97%(Photo by Colleen Hayes/HBO)For seven seasons, HBO’s savage political satire Veep never let up in its pursuit of breaking our funny bones with vicious one-liners and some of the darkest comedy we’ve seen on American TV. In its final episode, though, it broke our hearts. The moment comes just before Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) takes the stage to accept the Democratic nomination for president, and, hugging her loyal bagman, Gary (Tony Hale), tells him she couldn’t have done it without him. She’s almost teary, and so are we, because we know what Gary doesn’t: Selina has made him the fall guy for nefarious goings on at the Meyer Foundation; a few minutes later, as she rouses the crowd with talk of sacrifice, we see FBI agents approaching Gary offstage. In an epilogue set 24 years later at Meyers’ funeral, a loyal-to-the-end Gary shows up, armed with lipstick in her favorite shade.16. Michael Marshall Sings San Francisco In The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) 92%The Last Black Man in San Francisco, directed by Joe Talbot from a story by Talbot and the film’s star, Jimmie Fails, features some of the year’s most beautiful cinematography. But this tale of gentrification on the Bay also features one of the most incredible music moments, as the film essentially pauses for a rendition of Scott McKenzie’s 1967 “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers In Your Hair).” The song is given a new, jazzy spin as performed by Michael Marshall (he does the hook/chorus on “I Got 5 On It,” part of another great movie music moment this year) and with tuba courtesy of Norway’s Daniel Herskedal. The song features heavily in the trailer for the film above.15. The Vampire Council Convenes in What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 (2019) 94%FX’s TV version of the cult vampire movie was always in good hands coming from the film’s co-writer, co-director, and star Jemaine Clement, but things got extra-special when the comedy paid tribute to the vampire genre with a next-level star-studded seventh episode, directed by the film’s other star/co-writer/co-director, Taika Waititi. As Staten Island vampires Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja prepare to face the all-powerful vampire council and answer for their wrongdoing, prepare yourself for a cameo-fest that will blow your mind.14. WTF Did Goose Just Do?! in Captain Marvel (2019) 79%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Comic book fans might have known what was coming, but most moviegoers checking out Carol Danvers’ origin story were as shocked as Nick Fury when Goose the cat suddenly spewed out a bundle of alien tentacles and swallowed the Tesseract. Turns out Goose is a Flerken, a shape-shifting, egg-laying, tentacle-having species of alien with the capacity to house a pocket dimension inside themselves. Duh! In a movie full of scene-stealers – Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos – this feline sidekick stole the whole damn show.13. Whisperers massacre survivors in The Walking Dead: Season 9 (2018) 89%Samantha Morton s Alpha wants the survivors from Alexandria, Hilltop, The Kingdom, and elsewhere to know where her boundaries end, so she mounts the (still jabbering) heads of 10 survivors on pikes and embeds them in the ground to mark the edge of the Whisperers’ territory. R.I.P. Addy, Rodney, Tammy Rose, Highwaymen Ozzy and Alek, DJ, Frankie, and, most shockingly, Henry, Enid, and Tara. The scene is a bloody tableau that Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Henry’s adoptive mom Carol (Melissa McBride), Siddiq (Avi Nash), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and fans won’t ever forget.12. Elton performs Your Song in Rocketman (2019) 89%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic is big on spectacle: the director’s staging of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” in a pub and carnival and of “Crocodile Rock” at the Troubadour left us with some of the most memorable screen images and sounds of the year. But it’s a quieter Rocketman scene that lingers longest. Sitting in his family’s living room, Elton (Taron Egerton) starts to put music to Bernie Taupin’s lyrics for “Your Song”; as the song takes shape, Taupin (Jamie Bell), as well as Elton’s mother (Bryce Dallas Howard) and grandmother (Gemma Jones) become transfixed. Egerton delivers show-stopping numbers throughout the Certified Fresh film, but this could be the scene they play come Oscar night.11. Andy Is Willing to Go the Distance in Netflix s Fyre (2019) 92% Andy King has seen all of your FYRE Fest memes — and he loves them! pic.twitter.com/mCNgDoHpjW Netflix (@netflix) January 29, 2019In the battle of this January’s Fyre Festival docs, it was Netflix’s Fyre that came out on top according to the Tomatometer, with a Certified Fresh score of 90%. While Hulu’s Fyre Fraud was no slouch at 78% on the Tomatometer, we think one key sequence may have given Netflix’s film the edge – and you know exactly what we’re talking about. With four 18-wheelers’ worth of Evian sitting in Customs, event producer Andy King confesses he agreed to “take one for the team” and perform fellatio on a government official to free the water. “I drank some mouthwash,” he tells us, before getting in his car fully prepared to do his duty for the fast-imploding festival. In the end King didn’t have to bend the knee – he says Customs released the water on the condition they would be paid soon after the festival ended – and things ended very happily for him. King’s story went viral, he became something of a folk hero, and has been fielding offers from networks for his own TV show.10. The Knife Fight in John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89%(Photo by © Lionsgate)In a franchise characterized by lethal stationery and unpleasant night-outs at the club, what makes a lowly, stabby knife fight stand out? First, it begins with a dash of humor: Keanu Reeves John Wick has been chased into an antiquated New York building, and as he and his assailants pummel each other, they take a second to pause and realize their surroundings. My God, it s full of knives! And then comes the audience wincing as sharp blades of every curve and edge are tossed up and down the hallway, mixed in with some trademark Wickian gun-fu, all shot in steady and crisp camera angles. Then, as Wick emerges victorious, but with one would-be assassin still alive, he hurls an axe in a comically large arc into the guy s skull – just for that last dash of mordant humor. The knife fight captures everything brutal and entertaining about the series.9. The Hot Priest Monologue in Fleabag, Season 2(Photo by Steve Schofield)This moving moment from the series finale from series creator, writer, and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge starts after Jake’s beautiful bassoon piece. The Priest – Andrew Scott, forever known as hot priest hereafter – delivers a speech about love at the wedding of Fleabag’s Dad (Bill Paterson) and godmother (Olivia Colman), starting with “Love is awful!” Claire (Sian Clifford) is alarmed: “There’s something wrong with your Priest.” Fleabag thinks maybe he’s talking about her, but it turns out, it’s a love letter to God — The Priest later dumps her at a bus stop. Check out the full speech: Love is awful. It’s awful. It’s painful. It’s frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. Makes you selfish. Makes you creepy. Makes you obsessed with your hair. Makes you cruel. Makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. It’s all any of us want, and it’s hell when we get there. So no wonder it’s something we don’t want to do on our own. I was taught if we’re born with love, then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot: It feeling right. When it feels right, it’s easy. But I’m not sure that’s true. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is: When you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope. 8. Ducky and Bunny have a Plan in Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%(Photo by © Pixar, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Not to take anything away from Forky or Duke Caboom – both great additions to the Toy Story world, and both with their own fantastic moments in the series fourth film. But for pure scene-stealing skills, we re going all in on plush with Ducky and Bunny, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. As the movie turns into pure heist flick, these two carnival toys kick into comedy high gear, and their one-note suggestions for how to steal a key provide for one of the most gut-busting running gags we ve ever seen in a Pixar film. Definitely stay for the credits. 7. Keanu Makes An Entrance in Always Be My Maybe (2019) 90%In the Year of Keanu Reeves, formerly known as 2019, there was just so much Keanu goodness going around – Duke “Yes I Can-ada!” Caboom; John Wick on a horse; the promise of next year’s Bill and Ted reboot. But perhaps our favorite Keanu moment came in Netflix’s Ali Wong-Randall Park rom-com Always Be My Maybe, in which Reeves makes one of the movies’ great entrances, strutting slow-mo into a fancy San Francisco restaurant, shaking hands and blowing kisses as Awolnation’s synthy Sails blasts on the soundtrack. It was the walk that launched a thousand memes, and Reeves performance as a cocky and surreal version of himself in the film is inspired.6. Barry Fights Feral Martial Arts Guru, Lily, in Barry: Season 2 (2019) 100%(Photo by Aaron Epstein/HBO)Sent to kill Ronny Proxin (Daniel Bernhardt), Bill Hader’s Barry has the misfortune of learning during that job that Ronny is a taekwondo champion. Barry manages to break the guy’s windpipe and appears to kill him – and that s when little Lily (Jessie Giacomazzi), Ronny’s daughter and also a martial arts master, comes home. The fight that ensues is the highlight of an incredible season of the Emmy-winning show. Feral with grief, Lily growls and shows off some supernatural leaping abilities. She finally subdues Barry by stabbing him repeatedly, then runs away. “What are you?” Fuches (an always hilarious Stephen Root) screams into the night when the petite warrior later takes a chunk out of his cheek with her teeth. The episode was directed by Hader.5. Reactor 4 explodes in Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (Photo by HBO)The story in HBO s acclaimed miniseries Cherobyl begins in Moscow on April 26, 1988, with the dramatic suicide of enfeebled Valery Legasov, played to perfection by Jared Harris (The Terror). In a recording, Legasov indicts Anatoly Dyatlov (Paul Ritter), the man who ran the room at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exactly two years earlier when its core exploded, and calls for his death. The explosion resulted in the worst man-made environmental disaster in history and in untold deaths — estimated in the thousands when reduced life expectancy is included. The story then flashes back to Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR, in 1986 and takes viewers directly into the room following the explosion. Dyatlov embodies blind arrogance, as he denies eyewitness accounts that the core has exploded. “You’re confused,” he tells one of his men. “RBMK reactor cores don’t explode.” It turns out that under exactly the right circumstances — one having to do with cost cutting and infuriating incompetence — they do. This scene is where the horror story begins. (Check out our interview with series director Johan Renck.)4. Tony Vanquishes Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)Avengers: Endgame is chock full of moments that are like emotional kryptonite to Marvel fans (hello, mixed media metaphors!). But you re going to need Doctor Strange doing magic hand jazz to hold back the onslaught of tears most of us felt when Tony Stark snapped his fingers as the Infinity Stones were infused into his Iron Man armor, sending Thanos back to the dust from whence he came, and frying himself in the process. It s a pulverizing moment coming at the end of a very long battle – or the end of a very long movie, or the end of a very long series depending on how you look at it – made all the more devastating with the funeral and reunion that immediately follows it. Or how about the moment preceding the snap, when Stark looks straight into the purple fiend s eyes and proclaims, I am Iron Man ? It s all a whirling carousel of rising intensity and action, and that snap really ties it all together.3. A Trumpet and a Verdict in When They See Us: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us is a gripping and harrowing journey through the darkest corners of the criminal justice system: from bent investigations and interrogations to heavily weighted legal proceedings to the corruption and horrors of the prison system and finally the way that the label of “prisoner” sticks hard in a post-prison life. The four-part retelling of the eventually overturned rape and assault convictions of the so-called Central Park Five – Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, and Raymond Santana – is stacked with moments that shock, anger, and move, but there’s one image that lingers perhaps more than any other (or anything else we’ve seen on TV this year). In the closing moments of episode 2, as the boys are read their guilty verdicts, DuVernay cuts to Richardson (played by Asante Blackk) sitting in the middle of a Harlem street and raising his trumpet to his lips, a pair of handcuffs dangling from his left wrist. Richardson plays a few tortured notes before we cut back to court to see him, wide-eyed in terror and shock, lower his head, closing out the episode.2. Arya Kills the Night King in Game of Thrones: Season 8 (2019) 55%(Photo by HBO)The Stark family’s own Faceless (Wo)Man schools us on what that whole Braavos excursion was for: to wield an ancient Valyrian-steel dagger and kill the Game of Thrones villain many viewers thought was destined to face Jon “Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name” Snow in his final confrontation. But for every Jon Snow fan whining about how the Night King was his to kill, there’s an Arya Stark fan fist-pumping because the gal has mad skills. Yes, even silently stalking her prey and becoming virtually invisible when the undead masses are focused on their leader as he readies a death blow against the No. 1 target on his hit list, the Three-Eyed Raven. Stealthy assassin Arya would not let her brother go out like that.1. Avengers Assemble! from Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios / )Think cutting off Avengers assemble mid-line at the end of Age of Ultron was a major blockbuster tease for MCU fans? They d only been waiting since 2012 when the first Avengers movie came out – diehard comic book fans have been anticipating to hear the famous battle cry on the big screen since the 60s. And everybody got what they came for in the fan service fantasia that is Avengers: Endgame. During the climatic battle, as Captain America tightens his shield, standing alone against Thanos and his cosmic hordes, Infinity War s fallen come rushing out of the portals. As the triumphant music swells, the heroes stand in unison, awaiting Cap s command, which comes softly growled, with the impact of destiny fulfilled at last. After two Certified Fresh seasons, the hit show Cobra Kai has moved to Netflix for season 3 which will arrive at some point in 2021. And if you can’t get enough of that ’80s’ nostalgia mixed with martial arts and well-developed characters, Rotten Tomatoes has put together a list that should crane-kick your next few binge sessions up a notch.Cobra Kai seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix.

亚博APP软件 o is coming off the recent HBO movie My Dinner with Herve, starring Peter Dinklage as Fantasy Island star Herve Villechaize. MGM is also developing an Aretha Franklin biopic with Jennifer Hudson attached to star.6. CHARLIZE THERON AND JAFAR FROM ALADDIN LEAD COMIC BOOK MOVIE THE OLD GUARD (Photo by Andres Otero/Everett Collection)When the first images emerged online of Marwan Kenzari as the villain in last week s Aladdin remake, a new #hotjafar hashtag was spawned in reaction. If this week s casting news is any indication, Kenzari may be the first breakout star from Aladdin, as the Dutch actor has signed on to join Charlize Theron in Netflix s comic book adaptation The Old Guard. Gina Prince-Bythewood, who at one time was expected to make her comic book movie debut with Sony s now-delayed Black Cat and Silver Sable movie, will be directing The Old Guard next instead. Theron will star in The Old Guard as the leader of a small group of immortal mercenary soldiers who have been fighting in countless wars dating back to the Middle Ages (at least). Matthias Schoenaerts, who co-starred with Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow, also signed on this week.7. YOUNG BLACK-ISH STAR PRODUCING AMARI AND THE NIGHT BROTHERS (Photo by Eli Joshua Ade/Universal Pictures)14-year-old actress Marsai Martin from ABC s Black-ish sitcom executive produced last month s Little, in which she also starred, and now she is producing another film in which she will star. Don Cheadle is also producing the adaptation of the novel Amari and the Night Brothers by first-time author B.B. Alston, which Universal Pictures is now developing after a multi-studio bidding war. The premise of the book (which won t be published until January of 2021) is being kept relatively secret, but it s known that Marsai Martin s character will be a black girl who goes on a journey in which she discovers her hidden powers. That the novel is being held back until 2021 suggests that Universal Pictures hopes to be able to fast-track the film and release it sometime in that year as well. It s not yet known if if Cheadle also plans on co-starring in Amari and the Night Brothers in addition to co-producing.Like this?
