亚博账户采用百度引擎1(Baidu 9)Despite having the lowest Tomatometer score (74%) of the Wizarding World (aka Harry Potter) franchise, spinoff prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is still Certified Fresh and the brand has maintained a positive 83% average. Unfortunately, that’s about to take a dip if the first reviews of the sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are any indication. With a mixed 55% score out of the gate, the new movie is said to be too convoluted, with too many characters, and all in service of the next movie rather than the installment at hand. Still, if you’re a fan of the franchise, you should be satisfied with all the usual magic, as well as the return of a Professor Dumbledore in younger form. Here’s what critics are saying about the movie:How does it compare to the previous film?A huge step up from the middling Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Caryn James, Hollywood ReporterRowling has improved upon the first Fantastic Beasts film by fleshing out her characters in a way that’s engaging. David Griffin, IGNThe Crimes of Grindelwald takes the first installment and improves upon it tenfold. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentSo far, so good but there’s a counterpoint? It’s less a necessary new chapter in this ongoing story than… an affordable multiplex alternative to whisking the whole family off to the Wizarding World area of Universal Studios.  A.A. Dowd, AV ClubAs it turns out, the true crime of Grindelwald was wasting the audience’s time.  Karen Han, Polygon[It’s] the noisiest, most rhythmless, and least coherent entry in the Wizarding World saga since Alfonso Cuarón first gave the franchise its sea legs in 2004.  Andrew Barker, VarietyWhat always made the Harry Potter films so entrancing was its wonder. But that wonder, once portrayed through the eyes of children, is nowhere to be found.  Robert Daniels, 812filmreviews(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)How is the magical spectacle? There s nothing particularly impressive about the CGI feats in the film run-of-the-mill where modern blockbusters are concerned. Karen Han, PolygonMore so than even the last film…The Crimes of Grindelwald has tons of incredible magic effects, dazzling new sets, and adorable (and terrifying) new beasts. Germain Lussier, io9So the beasts are still fantastic? The beasts are the best thing about the movie.  Karen Han, PolygonMostly, I got the sense that the creators regretted saddling themselves with the animal theme.  Angie Han, MashableBut is there too much going on?The Crimes of Grindelwald throws an awful lot at the screen during this clotted two-hour-plus diversion. Manohla Dargis, New York TimesThere are a lot of moving parts in this film, and too many of them are moving without purpose. Tasha Robinson, The VerveRowling has included so many different characters and sub-plots that the narrative momentum is sometimes lost. Geoffrey Macnab, The IndependentThe Crimes of Grindelwald probably had enough plot to drive a four-hour mini-series. William Bibbiani, The Wrap(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Does it move the franchise forward? At almost every turn, it weaves in broad strokes created only to set up the next movie… The Crimes of Grindelwald doesn’t care about the movie you are watching.  Germain Lussier, io9Just like the first one, it still feels like set-up for bigger pay-offs down the line, without the satisfying cliffhanger qualities of, say, The Empire Strikes Back.  Ian Freer, Empire MagazineWill we enjoy the familiar characters? Our returning heroes feel less familiar than they did when they were introduced in the last film, thanks to a rash of baffling decisions.  Angie Han, MashableWhen [Newt] is allowed to lead this second story, it’s as whimsical and good-hearted as any in the franchise.  Kate Erbland, IndieWireNewt remains one of the most distinctive heroes in blockbuster cinema.  William Bibbiani, The WrapThe best of the bunch, once again, is the illicit muggle-mage coupling of Jacob and Queenie, who burst into the film’s early stages like an enchanted Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters.  Andrew Barker, VarietyQueenie and Jacob often seem to be starring in a different, potentially more interesting movie.  Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Are there any great newcomers?Of the newer characters, the only real standout is Leta Lestrange, played by the effortlessly compelling Zoe Kravitz.  Angie Han, MashableZoë Kravitz as Leta is pretty fantastic and I love where they go with her character in the film.  Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentHow is Jude Law as Dumbledore?Jude Law captures the quick wit, easy charm and cloying inscrutability of the character.  William Bibbiani, The WrapWisely, Law doesn’t try to channel Michael Gambon or Richard Harris… he gives the character the calm, warmth and understanding that has made him such a beloved figure.  Caryn James, Hollywood ReporterIs Johnny Depp a problem? For all of the controversy surrounding Johnny Depp s casting, it s strange just how underutilized he is.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendDepp is also supremely average as Grindewald. He simply mails it in.  Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsJohnny Depp is instantly captivating as the titular villain and damn creepy, too.  David Griffin, IGNHis portrayal of Grindelwald rekindles memories of his old mentor, Vincent Price.  Geoffrey Macnab, The IndependentJohnny Depp is fine, if you can forget about his ugly personal life.  Angie Han, MashableRyan FujitaniIs this movie just for the fans?It s a movie built special for aficionados of the Wizarding World.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendIt’s hard to imagine anyone but hardcore Potterheads getting emotionally involved in this film’s convoluted plotting and ancestral reveals.  Tasha Robinson, The VerveRowling seems to be playing to the fans in the thinnest way possible, building in stories that require foreknowledge to appreciate them fully.  Kate Erbland, IndieWireThe Crimes of Grindelwald is enough to make J.K. Rowling fans weep in frustration, provided they can even keep their eyes open.  Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesWill we walk out anticipating part three? The twisty plot leads to an explosive climax…including a jaw-dropper for the Potter faithful that’ll have them clamoring for the threequel.  Brian Truitt, USA TodayThe Crimes of Grindelwald is rich and intriguing fare that will leave viewers impatient for the next sequel.  Geoffrey Macnab, The IndependentIt’s hard not to worry about the franchise heading in a similar direction.  Andrew Barker, VarietyFantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens everywhere on Friday, November 16. Despite the fact Marvel’s Runaways will be completing its run on December 13th, it still has plenty of story to tell. In fact, this may be its biggest season, as it finally brings straight-up magic into its tale of teen runaway superheroes, aliens, supervillain parents, intergalactic intrigue, and a lovable pet dinosaur. In fact, the show’s unique mixture of elements was part of the appeal for Elizabeth Hurley, who spoke with Rotten Tomatoes and other journalists during a set visit last August and joins the program as Morgan le Fay.“What I really loved about it is the fact that the grown-ups had great stuff to do and were integral to the plot and had moments of their own. They weren t just feeding the kids [conflict].” That said, Morgan will certainly be feeding conflict to Nico (Lyrica Okano) as “one of the most powerful sorceresses in history and the universe” and the legendary magician of Arthurian legend. And as Hurley put it, “she s definitely bringing a completely different element to the show from a magic point of view. Though she did not appear in Runaways’ second season, she is at the heart of Nico’s troubles toward its conclusion. “Nico is a fledgling baby witch, unsure of her powers, and can t really control herself yet,” Hurley said of the character Morgan is most interested in positioning toward her ends.“We re going to learn more about what that darkness is about, where it comes from, [and] what it s connected to,” added executive producer and showrunner Stephanie Savage.“Nico seems at first [to be Morgan’s] chief adversary, but you ll start to see some connection between her and Tina [Nico’s mother, played by Brittany Ishibashi],” said Savage’s showrunning partner Josh Schwartz. “So mother and daughter might actually find themselves aligned against the larger evil in ways that will surprise people.”(Photo by Hulu)First introduced in 1955’s Black Knight #1 by Stan Lee and Joe Maneely, Morgan was presented as an immortal half-faerie with designs on world conquest well after the fall of Camelot. Projecting her consciousness into the modern day, she caused plenty of trouble for Spider-Man, the Avengers and others. Schwartz and Savage credited co-executive producer Quinton Peeples with pulling the character into the Runways’ orbit. “Based on where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do in terms of Marvel magic, she was a really strong fit for us,” Peeples said. But for the purposes of the show, Morgan will not be reaching out to Nico from the 6th Century. Instead, viewers will find her in a place more familiar to Marvel film watchers: the Dark Dimension featured in Doctor Strange. The strange realm also appeared in Marvel’s Agent Carter and Marvel Clock Dagger, but Peeples said, “Ours is very specific to our show, and I think it expands the vocabulary of what that world is like and how it operates. These rules will be important as Morgan tries to escape its pull. And once she makes her way to 2019 Los Angeles? “She thinks there s room for improvement,” Hurley said.Of course, Morgan’s attempts to join the modern world may not be the Runaways biggest problem when the season begins. When we last saw them, the group was divided, with Karolina (Virginia Gardner) and Chase (Greg Sulkin) captured by Jonah (now played by James Marsters) and the other remaining aliens from his spaceship, who put them in stasis tubes and seemed prepared to serve them up for supper in the finale s closing moments.(Photo by Michael Desmond/Hulu)“We pick up right where we left off last season, and the gang is trying to figure out how to get us out of those tubes,” Gardner told us. “And it takes them a little bit of time. We spend a long time in those tubes.”But Karolina’s time in the tube may give her space to process the Church of Gibborim’s new devotion to her. “She s still very uncomfortable with it,” she said. “Everywhere she goes, people are bowing down to her, and there’s posters of her everywhere.” And while that may continue to be an issue for her, Gardner said Karolina’s big conflict will be figuring out her place with Nico. “We re starting to see Nico get pulled towards this dark side the staff is leading her [toward],” she explained. “Karolina is trying to figure out if Nico is too far gone already or if she can pull her back from this dark side.”To the actor, this ultimately means Morgan is the biggest threat the group will ever face, “beyond the parents, beyond PRIDE, beyond Jonah, beyond any of those things. Morgan le Fay is like a whole new animal for us.”An animal that Rhenzy Feliz told us his character, Alex, considers a “f king maze.” As the one member of the group lacking any powers or abilities, Alex must be “smarter than everybody else in order to contribute.” He teased those contributions may be surprisingly “practical” despite the magic on display. Nonetheless, he warned “one of the big things about this season is that no one s really safe.”(Photo by Michael Desmond/Hulu)That lack of safety is a constant threat in the life of Nico’s father Robert (James Yaegashi), who, as the one of the more reluctant PRIDE parents, always seems to get it the worst, and left last season needing extreme medical care. “It does feel like Robert has nine lives,” Yaegeshi said. “I don t know if that target s ever coming off his back. I think part of the problem is that Robert s comfortable having other people do things [for him], but things are so extreme in this world that when he tries to step out to be the alpha is when he gets in trouble.” His season will begin in the ICU and set off something of an interior journey for the character.A mortally wounded Robert would usually be reason enough for Tina to put aside her own issues and help him, but now that she is possessed by one of the aliens, Ishibashi said the character has little concern for her host’s husband. “They didn t end up using it in the final cut, but there was one take that we did where Tina had put a hastily written sign on him that said ‘Human in Danger’ and pasted it to his shirt,” she said. Instead, much of the actor s time was spent building a new dynamic with Marsters and Brigid Brannagh, who now play formless aliens possessing the actor s former characters. “To establish a new family dynamic is hilarious because all of a sudden, Victor [Marsters] and Stacey [Brannagh] are my mom and dad,” she said. “Jonah, this person who she hates more than anything in the world, who killed her daughter and destroyed her family, is now her father figure.”Curiously, Ishibashi quipped that Nico will like the alien version of her mother better. “She s like, ‘I already thought my mom was crazy,’” the actor joked. She also teased the debut of the aliens’ “Brother” – a character as yet unseen, but inhabiting one of the children.(Photo by Michael Desmond/Hulu)For Marsters, taking over the part of Jonah from Julian McMahon (his version of Jonah was obliterated last season) meant getting a chance to smile on the show for once. His previous character, Victor Stein, was the sort who never had any fun. “There s something really delicious about playing that kind of character,” Marsters said. “But playing a character who does smile and is very confident, is having a good day and he s enjoying being himself and is not morally conflicted about everything It was a lot lighter of an experience.”Another light experience, at least working on set, was the arrival of former Cloak Dagger stars Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt for a special crossover episode. At the time, it was unclear if both series would continue past their current seasons, but the excitement about bringing the two shows together was electric.“Olivia and Aubrey [are] super cool people, and so having them on set is awesome. Getting to know them a lot better is awesome,” Feliz said. “Apart from that, the story that we re getting to tell with them, seeing their powers in action and seeing the groups mesh. We re teenagers at the end of the day, so it s like the little snippets and jokes and kind of witty humor going back and forth.”Schwartz said they always wanted to do some sort of crossover as both shows shot their pilots around the same time. “The idea that there are these young heroes walking around in L.A and Louisiana who don t know each other… It just felt too good to miss out on.”“Cloak and Dagger are here to save the day,” he added. “But they re also here to help save some relationships as well.”(Photo by Hulu)Everyone we talked to teased Cloak and Dagger will arrive at one of the most high-stakes moments ever for the series. “The mission that they re on is extremely serious,” said Savage. “And they kind of brought that gravitas.”But it seems Tyrone (Joseph) and Tandy’s (Holt) arrival in Los Angeles will feature lighter moments as well. “[It’s] has been a lot of fun for me because I don t have to come to work every day and scream and cry,” Joseph joked. “Our show is obviously very dark in comparison to their show. It s a lot more lighthearted.” That means the Cloak and Dagger seen on the show will be in much better spirits than when we last saw them at the end of the program’s now-series finale. In fact, discovering other super-powered teens will alleviate some of their tensions. “I think the main thing is just the fact that they re teenagers that are like us,” Joseph explained. “It s kind of like, ‘let s see what s up with these guys.’” He also teased their decision to become proper heroes may have an effect on the Runaways, who may finally be able to see past their own family struggles to a larger world. “I think they re definitely noticing we have these powers for a reason and we re a team for a reason,” he said. So, despite the program coming to its conclusion, it seems to be the culmination of many Marvel TV ideas, with aliens, magic, and superheroes coming together both in conflict and in friendship. In short, it’s a page straight out of the Runaways comic and a fitting end for this part of Marvel’s ongoing tale. The third and final season of Marvel s Runaways premieres on Friday, December 13 on Hulu. (Photo by Everett Collection)Our new Classic Film Catch-Up feature connects you with classic films to put on your watchlist – beloved favorites and hidden gems alike. With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watch lists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you. This week in the Classic Film Catch-Up, we re ready to dance and sing about lesser-known or forgotten musicals – some classics, and some should-be-classics. The 50s and 60s were truly the golden ages of movie musicals; Best Picture winners like The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, and An American in Paris made stars out of Natalie Wood, Leslie Caron, and Rita Moreno, while established stars like Julie Andrews, Gene Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn catapulted to icon status on the backs of musical roles during this period. Later years saw rock musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Tommy break into the mainstream – however, countless gems have been largely forgotten by modern audiences. And we re here to fix that. Some titles on this list found cult-like followings in later years while others were unfortunate victims of too-close comparisons with their Broadway inspiration – either way, we think the films make up an eclectic roster of must-watch musicals. Read below for our list of hidden gem classic musicals you need to see or revisit.Got another favorite hidden gem classic musical you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) 78% What is it? A rags to riches musical about a famed socialite who survived the sinking of the Titanic. Why you need to see it: Debbie Reynolds is widely known for her role in Singin in the Rain – and for being Carrie Fisher s mother. However, if you want to see the triple-threat performer at her peak you must watch The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Reynolds plays the famed Denver socialite from humble beginnings who survived a flood as an infant and then the Titanic disaster as an adult. The film follows a fictional Molly from her years as a saloon girl to her eventual fame as one of the richest women in the country. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was a hit for MGM, but is not as familiar to modern audiences as some of its glossy contemporaries. Filled with humor and show-stopping numbers, the movie will have you humming ditties like  I ll Never Say No and Belly Up to the Bar, Boys as soon as the credits roll.Watch it if you like: Singin in the Rain, Princess Diaries, The Great Gadsby, Lawless, Funny Girl, My Fair LadyWhere to watch: Stream on TCMWatch app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Man of La Mancha (1972) 50% What is it? A musical biopic about Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, using his most famed literary creation as a plot device. Why you need to see it: It s hard to understand why the film adaptation of The Man from La Mancha starring Peter O Toole and Sophia Loren was not a critical and commercial hit. The original stage production was a smash on Broadway and took home five Tonys, but audiences were none-too-impressed with the film version: It failed to earn back its production budget and Time thought so little of it that the magazine didn t even publish a full review. Most of the problems with the adaptation are a result of its troubled production; a revolving door of directors and a heated debate over whether to make the film a musical at all crippled any effort to do justice to the source material. The dreary costumes, laughable sets, and indifferent cinematography may mar the overall product, but the music remains incredible, and Toole and Loren give it their all despite the challenges. So it s still worth a watch.Watch it if you like: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Don Juan Demarco, Monty Python, and the Holy Grail, The Mask of Zorro, The Three MusketeersWhere to watch: Stream now on HooplaDigital. Playing Carmen, Dandridge made her mark on history, becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Nominated for two Oscars, the film is well-known but not frequently watched. The performances, costumes, and rich Technicolor landscapes make watching the film a truly transformative experience that is almost enough to forgive the choice to dub the voices of famed singers in the production.Watch it if you like: Porgy Bess, Introducing Dorthy Dandridge, Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, Rent, Les MiserablesWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The Wiz (1978) 42% What is it? The Wizard of OZ is remade with a contemporary story, new music, and an all-Black cast. Why you need to see it: As many Twitter users pointed out during NBC s The Wiz Live! in 2015, many movie fans have not seen The Wiz. Beloved in the Black community, the film was a commercial disaster despite starring icons Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne. A modern imagining of Dorothy s trek along the yellow brick road – with music from Quincy Jones and Luther Vandross, direction by Sidney Lumet, and words by Joel Schumacher – the film was one of the most expensive musical productions ever made, and lost million at the box office. The film s popularity never matched its ambition outside of the Black community, where it s still lauded as a cult classic. And it s easy to see why when you watch it today. With some of the most gifted musicians of our time in front of and behind the camera, The Wiz is a soulful crowd pleaser that showcases these artists at the height of their popularity and powers.Watch it if you like: The Wizard of OZ, Oz, The Great and Powerful, Return to Oz, Moonwalker, Idlewild, LabyrinthWhere to watch: Stream now on Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) 67% (Photo by Courtesy of 20th Century Fox)What is it? Chronicles the lives and loves of The Donahues, a family vaudeville act.Why you need to see it: In a way, this is the original jukebox movie musical – all of the songs from There s No Business Like Show Business were previously penned by Irving Berlin for other works. Stacked with stage powerhouses like Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey, as well as film stars like Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O Connor, the film was primarily a vehicle to showcase Marilyn Monroe, who had just married Joe DiMaggio and was one of the biggest names and box office draws in Hollywood. However, with a near two-hour runtime (a rare feat for musicals of that era), audiences found the film to be a little too Broadway and lacking in story. Monroe, who famously only took the role to ensure her casting in The Seven Year Itch, didn t shine in any of her musical numbers and was lambasted by critics. Despite all this, however, There s No Business like Show Business does have some of the most incredible and lavish musical numbers ever committed to screen, and further highlights Berlin s incomparable musical catalog.Watch it if you like: A Chorus Line, Gypsy, Funny Girl, Some Like it Hot, The Greatest ShowmanWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Cover Girl (1944) 95% (Photo by Courtesy of Sony Home Entertainment)What is it? A young chorus girl wins a cover girl contest, is thrust into stardom, and must choose between her career or love. Why you need to see it: Rita Hayworth became one of only a handful of women who had the enviable honor of dancing with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astair on screen with her role in Cover Girl. Dancing alongside Kelly in her first role with top billing, Cover Girl was one of Hayworth s final films before Gilda solidified her as a film icon. Shown briefly in The Shawshank Redemption, Hayworth s iconic entrance and overall performance here was also the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A massive hit at the time, this story of a showgirl-turned-star has been sadly dwarfed in later years by Kelly s and Hayworth s more memorable roles like Singin in the Rain and The Lady From Shanghai, respectively.Watch it if you like: Gilda, Showboat, A Chorus Line, Almost Famous, A Star is Born, RockstarWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Hair (1979) 88% What is it? An anti-war rock musical set within the hippie counter culture. Why you need to see it: Though many will know Hair s catchy opening number  Aquarius, the musical itself is a bit of a lesser-known treasure outside of musical theater obsessives. The first film directed by Milos Forman after his critical and commercial smash One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest, Hair had critics raving about his skill in adapting the controversial and stylized musical. Roger Ebert said of Forman: He brings life to the musical form in the same way that West Side Story did. Still, some contemporaries – including the musical s creators – argued it diluted the musical s anti-war message was diluted on the journey from stage to screen.Watch it if you like: Jesus Christ Superstar, Across the Universe, Sgt. This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Methuselah Man, Moonfall, Popeye, and Scarface. This WEEK S TOP STORYLUCA GUADAGNINO WILL DIRECT THE COEN BROTHERS  SCARFACE(Photo by Sandro Kopp/© Amazon Studios)As with movies like A Star is Born and The Magnificent Seven, the fan-favorite drug lord drama Scarface (Certified Fresh at 81%) was itself a remake of a 1932 mobster movie starring Paul Muni. So when Hollywood starts talking about remaking (or rebooting) a movie like Scarface, they re really talking about remaking a remake. Universal Pictures has been trying to do just that with Scarface for several years now, including periods in when the setting might have shifted to take place within a Mexican or African-American crime world. We can now report that the latest director attached to Universal s Scarface is Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Certified Fresh at 95%), who most recently directed another remake, Suspiria (Fresh at 65%), and who s also developing a remake of Lord of the Flies. It s unclear what Guadagnino s plans for Scarface are, exactly, except that the film will focus on an immigrant story and be set in Los Angeles, and that he ll be working off a screenplay recently rewritten by Joel and Ethan Coen.Other Top Headlines1. GEORGE MILLER EXPLAINS FURIOSA CASTING DECISION(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Although Australian director George Miller has been directing feature films for over 30 years (since the first Mad Max in 1979), his most recent film, 2015 s Mad Max: Fury Road (Certified Fresh at 97%) was such an impressive breakthrough that, for the five years since, he s left the world wondering what he ll do next. We ve known for a while now that his next film will be an epic romance called Three Thousand Years of Longing, and that Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton are attached to star. That film appeared to finally get close to a greenlight this week with the news that MGM has come aboard to distribute the project, which will be filmed on location in Australia, London, and Istanbul. As for the Fury Road prequel called Furiosa, this week Miller addressed his decision to cast the role with a younger actress instead of 44-year-old Charlize Theron, stating his concern that de-aging CGI hasn t yet escaped the uncanny valley and citing last year s The Irishman as an example of that. Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Emma., The New Mutants) has been mentioned as a possible Furiosa star, but no official casting announcement has been made yet.2. DANNY BOYLE TO DIRECT MICHAEL B. JORDAN IN METHUSELAH MAN(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)A recurring theme in this week s news is that the directors of various 2019 movies are lining up their next films to be produced some time in the near future after the current COVID-19 crisis is somewhat alleviated. One of those directors is Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting), who last year gave us the Beatles-themed musical movie Yesterday (Fresh at 63%). Boyle s new project this week is the long-in-development Methuselah Man, which in some way tells the story of a man who is over 900 years old (like the Biblical character). At one point, Tom Cruise was going to star in Methuselah Man, but the part now will be played by Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther). Danny Boyle s frequent screenwriting partner Simon Beaufoy is expected to rewrite the script, although it s still unknown what the premise exactly is. Whatever it is, Warner Bros. reportedly sees it as potentially the first film of a new franchise. Michael B. Jordan s next film is expected to be the Tom Clancy adaptation Without Remorse, which is working its way through post-production as people work on it remotely.3. CATE BLANCHETT ADDS TWO MORE PROJECTS TO HER SCHEDULE(Photo by Lisa Tomasetti/©Sony Pictures Classics)Just last week, we reported that Cate Blanchett was the first acting talent to sign on for the video game adaptation Borderlands, even as her ambitious mini-series Mrs. America continues to air its final episodes on FX this month. Blanchett looks to stay busy, though, as she became attached to two more projects this week. Let s start with Armageddon Times, which will be the next film from director James Gray, whose most recent film was last year s Ad Astra (Certified Fresh at 84%). Armageddon Time was reportedly inspired by Gray s time at the prestigious Kew-Forest School, where Fred Trump served on the school board, and which his son Donald Trump also attended. Cate Blanchett s role in Armageddon Time hasn t been confirmed yet. The other movie Blanchett signed on for this week is a Netflix sci-fi satire called Don t Look Up with director Adam McKay (Vice, The Big Short, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy). Jennifer Lawrence will also co-star in the comedy about a team of astronomers on a media tour trying to warn the world that Earth is about to be hit by a world-destroying asteroid. We also don t really know what Blanchett s role Don t Look Up will be.4. A NEW POPEYE MOVIE IS BACK IN DEVELOPMENTRussian-born animator and director Genndy Tartakovsky made the transition to feature films in 2012 with the first Hotel Transylvania after already achieving success on TV with shows like Dexter s Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack. It was also in 2012 that Tartakovsky came on board a Sony Pictures Animation adaptation of the long-running cartoon character Popeye (the Sailor Man). That led to test footage debuting online in 2014, but then Sony Pictures pulled the plug on the project in 2015, and it seemed like Tartakovsky s Popeye would never see the light of day. In a surprising (and rare) twist, the rights have reverted back from Sony to King Features, which has now greenlit the Popeye feature film, with Genndy Tartakovsky back on board to deliver his original vision from nearly 10 years ago. Sony Pictures is currently working on a Hotel Transylvania 4, but Tartakovsky won t be directing that one.
On Sunday night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) handed out the 2019 Golden Globes and, as is often the case with the Golden Globes, they delivered some surprises. Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody, Glenn Close, and Green Book didn t walk into the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night favored to win, but each walked out with a Globe statuette.  Check out our recap of the best moments from the ceremony here.Owing to its position on the calendar and ability to host a star-studded awards ceremony, the Globes are often looked at as a measuring stick for awards season. But with such a small voting body it’s unwise to put too much faith in the Globes results as a predictor of Oscar winners or nominations. No slight on the HFPA, but a group of 90 international film journalist cannot be expected to predict the voting habits of 7,258 industry professionals. Since the Academy expanded the Best Picture category to include up to 10 nominees in 2009, only 59% of Golden Globe Best Picture nominees have earned Oscar nominations.Looked at more closely, it can seem that the Golden Globes are more a reaction point than any sort of clear indicator. A snub by the HFPA can spark indignation that helps, or damages, a film or performer s Oscar chances. Last year Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri won the GG for Best Drama and the backlash that was already brewing to that film finally bubbled over, likely turning some Oscar voters toward Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which later won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The same could be said for La La Land vs. Moonlight in 2016; Moonlight won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama, but was shut out in all the other categories – snubs that only added supporters to its bandwagon come Oscar time. With all this in mind, what do Sunday night’s wins and losses mean for this year’s awards landscape?A Star Dims, But Only Somewhat(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )A Star Is Born has fizzled but not completely faded; save the win for Best Song, the film was shut out of many awards, notably Best Actress Drama for Lady Gaga. It s not out of what is still a very wide-open Best Picture race, but it needs some wins. Look to this weekend’s Critics Choice awards for added momentum, but if Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper fall short again then the movie s chances of big Oscar wins will be er, shallower.Best Supporting Actor Is Still Undecided (Photo by © Fox Searchlight)Can You Ever Forgive Me? s Richard E. Grant lost to Green Book s Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor, but we think that has a lot to do with Ali s having been shut out of a GG nomination for Moonlight a few years ago (and going on to win the Oscar). With a healthy number of wins from the critics guilds, Grant is still very much in contention. Same can be said for First Reformed s Ethan Hawke (for a Best Actor nomination), Eight Grade s Bo Burham (writing and directing), and Roma s Yalitza Aparicio (Best Actress), none of whom were nominated for the Globes but each of whom have enough momentum with critics groups to keep them top of mind with Academy voters.King Continues Her Reign(Photo by @ NBC)Regina King’s winning streak continues – after a slight bump with that bizarre SAG snub. King s work in If Beale Street Could Talk is the most honored performance of 2018 – with nearly 40 nominations and 20 wins – and her Oscar win is looking more and more assured. With momentum and buzz being just as important as the performance, King’s rousing acceptance speech was a final word to silence any naysayers (we pity the conductor who tried to play her off).

DC is on a roll with another critical hit, if the first reactions to Birds of Prey on social media are any indication. The comic book movie premiered Wednesday and squashed any concern that the all-women antihero team-up could be as disappointing as Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie stood out in that DCEU entry as Harley Quinn, and now she gets to wow audiences again, this time in a better adaptation, one that will reportedly have fans begging for more. Here’s what critics are saying about Birds of Prey in the first round-up of social reactions:So, how is it?Birds of Prey is f king spectacular and a huge five stars from me.  Millicent Thomas, Screen QueensBirds of Prey is an absolute blast and undeniably fun live wire jolt of adrenaline. Delightfully devilish and deliriously wicked, this irreverent, rule-breaking riot delivers a contact high.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAbsolutely BLOWN AWAY!  Kristen Lopez, FanSidedBirds of Prey is a solid breakup movie with a soundtrack that slaps…we get a rare glimpse into the rich inner life of a female supervillain (and it actually delivers on what was promised in the trailer).  Alison Foreman, MashableBirds of Prey is a totally campy and brutal carnival ride; a colorful, chaotic and cheeky blast.  Katie Walsh, Tribune News ServiceA rockin’ kick ass good time!  Griffin Schiller, The PlaylistIt s a bonkers bananas crime comedy and a genuine party movie.  Scott Mendelson, ForbesSo it s one of the better DC movies?I’m happy to report that it s my favorite modern DC movie yet. Like Shazam!, it carves its own path with totally unique aesthetic, action, and tone. Michael Rougeau, GameSpotThis looks and feels so different than any other superhero movie I’ve seen (and I feel like many will say it’s what they wish Suicide Squad had been in execution). Full credit to Cathy Yan for that, it’s clear they had a lot of fun making something so different. Terri Schwartz, IGNLeagues better than Suicide Squad. Alison Foreman, MashableAs opposed to Suicide Squad, the story, characters and themes are confidently carried through by Cathy Yan’s terrific direction. Griffin Schiller, The Playlist(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Is this the movie Margot Robbie s Harley deserves?Margot Robbie completely sells the incredibly choreographed fight sequences and their gleeful brutality. Terri Schwartz, IGNRobbie is excellent. Germain Lussier, io9It’s a terrific, vicious vehicle for Margot Robbie. Sean O Connell, Cinema BlendMargot Robbie is on top-form, Harley has never been quirkier and more lovable. Ben Rolph, Discussing FilmIt s at its best when going full Harley-vision, and Margot Robbie is clearly having a blast. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendWhat about the rest of the cast? The chemistry amongst the cast was great. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorRobbie, Smollett, Winstead, Perez and Basco are perfection. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIt’s truly an ensemble with every woman bringing it (Rosie and Jurnee are my faves tho). Yolanda Machado, The WrapJurnee Smollett-Bell steals the show! Kristen Lopez, FanSidedMary Elizabeth Winstead s Huntress is the not-so-secret MVP. Angie Han, MashableEveryone is having a blast but Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Huntress like a supporting character from The Tick. It rocks. Scott Mendelson, Forbes(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Is there an spinoff potential? If Birds of Prey told me anything, it’s that we need a whole lot more Canary and Huntress! They are great but there’s a lot left on the bone! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comI would love to see more Black Canary and Huntress in the future. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorI loved all these ladies and am looking forward to the sequel/spin-off. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentDoes it have worthy villains?COULD NOT get enough of McGregor’s Black Mask; hysterical, eccentric, and deliciously pathetic. Griffin Schiller, The PlaylistEwan McGregor is so sinister and often hilarious. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comEwan McGregor is on a different frequency, but wildly entertains! Sean O Connell, Cinema BlendFYC: Ewan MacGregor, Best Supporting Actor. Katie Walsh, Tribune News ServiceAdd Chris Messina chewing every piece of scenery in sight!! Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderI would like to send a lil prayer of thanks for the costume, makeup, and hair people responsible for Chris Messina s entire situation here because wow yes thank you. Angie Han, MashableThe villains are delicious. Jill Pantozzi, io9(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)How s the action?Action sequences are capably choreographed, shot and assembled, showing off an invigorating stunt spectacular, spotlighting women as individuals and as a team. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIt is worth seeing Birds of Prey for the kick ass action and the Funhouse Fight Scene, alone. Sean O Connell, Cinema BlendThe fight scenes are phenomenal. Jill Pantozzi, io9Has the best choreographed fight sequences I ve seen in a superhero movie. Rosie Knight, IGNSome of the most inventive, bone-crunching fight sequences in the superhero genre to date. Laura Prudom, IGNI’m pretty sure if you took the total amount of action sequences versus total screen time, this would be one of the highest percentages of action in the modern comic book movie era? Someone do the math for me later please. Terri Schwartz, IGNHow does it look in general?Cathy Yan is a genius… Loved how Yan builds her masterful mayhem with visual gags and colorful aesthetics. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionCathy Yan and DP Matthew Libatique create a visually distinct and luscious film that s badass, funny and provocative. Kristen Lopez, FanSidedCathy Yan created a Gotham that I can t wait to revisit. Yolanda Machado, The WrapCathy Yan s direction manages to feel intimate and thoughtful whilst also offering up the mile a minute madness that Harley and co. need. Rosie Knight, IGNWell-made, shot with beautiful colour and overall, a sleek piece of grand entertainment. Ben Rolph, Discussing Film(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)What other movies does it compare to?The only fair comparison for Birds of Prey, if you want one, is Deadpool. They have a lot in common, especially their use of fourth-wall breaking and R-Ratings! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comIt’s DC’s Deadpool with a dash of Tarantino. Griffin Schiller, The PlaylistKinda plays like a Guy Ritchie gangster movie. Scott Mendelson, ForbesThe action reminded me a lot of John Wick. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorDoes it earn its R rating? It’s sooooooooooooo R rated. Sean O Connell, Cinema BlendIt’s VERY violent in places and there are a couple of quite dark scenes (also lots of f-bombs). Clarisse Loughrey, IndependentCathy Yan has created a music infused celebration of female badassery. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentFINALLY!!!! Who actually kicks ass with long ass hair flinging around? Extra cheers for Yan and Hodson for putting that in knowing this is how women would do it!!… If the DCEU doesn t hand everything over to women now, they are clearly out of their minds. Yolanda Machado, The Wrap(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)OK, so let s hear about its problems.Uneven tone and pacing… The girls at their best together, and they re not together enough. Angie Han, MashableLulls a bit in the middle and is a little on the slight side definitely errs on the side of style over substance but the little character moments make it sparkle. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmThe pacing isn t always fantastic (and at 1hr 40min some of it still dragged), but it s worth a watch. Alison Foreman, MashableBirds of Prey isn t a Birds of Prey movie so much as it s a Harley Quinn movie featuring Birds of Prey, and that creates issues story-wise and in fleshing out characters. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendAt times the style can be a bit too abrasive, pacing a bit jolty, and it does feel like it’s balancing two movies (Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey). Griffin Schiller, The PlaylistIt’s tamer than expected and the basic story can get lost in the complex setups but it works more often than not. Germain Lussier, io9Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) opens on February 7.
