亚博论坛APP采用百度引擎6(Baidu 9)(Photo by TNT)On May 17, Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer will become a TNT television series starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs. It’s not the first property to jump from the big screen to the small one (it was technically a French graphic novel first), and it certainly won’t be the last. For decades now, television producers have been going to the movies and asking themselves if they could make what they’re watching work in an episodic format. Who needs writers to come up with ideas when the movies can do it for yo

Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. ead, this competition is starting to feel like the first matchup between Godzilla and King Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla, in which King Kong brought rocks to an atomic heat ray fight.Godzilla’s deeper bench once again proved to be the game changer, as low-rated movies like Godzilla (1998), Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2019), and Godzilla’s Revenge (1971), were offset by beloved films like Shin Godzilla (2016), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989). What’s slightly surprising is that Peter Jackson s King Kong has a 50% Audience Score, and only Kong: Skull Island (2017) and King Kong (1933) have scores above 65%. There’s not much audience love for Kong, but based on the 72.6% Audience Score average for the MonsterVerse films in general and early critical buzz for Godzilla vs. Kong, it’s possible that both of the big fellas could add another solid Audience Score to their tallies.Godzilla: 2 Kong: 0Round 3 Box OfficeKing Kong: 0 million average (4 films)Godzilla: 2 million average (4 films)Highest grossing: King Kong (2005), 0 millionLowest grossing: King Kong Lives, million(Photo by (c)Universal courtesy Everett Collection)We have ourselves a match! This round was difficult to tally because the majority of Godzilla and Kong films did not have reliable box office data. This meant we had to stick with domestic earnings for the eight films that received wide theatrical releases. It’s nice that the two were finally on a level playing field, and that allowed Kong to pull the victory. The win in this round wasn’t a fluke, as the Kong Big Three”  King Kong (1976), King Kong (2005), and Kong: Skull Island  pulled in over 0 million domestically (adjusted for inflation). The 0 million total easily bests the 0 million that Godzilla (1998), Godzilla (2014), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters grossed in the United States. The lone highlight for the Godzilla squad is that its lowest-grossing film, Godzilla 2000, earned a million dollar box office which was more than the million that King Kong Lives grossed.Godzilla: 2 Kong: 1Round 4 Screen TimeKing Kong: 22.1% of runtime on average (8 films)Godzilla: 14% of runtime on average(32 films)Film with most screen time: King Kong Lives, 33.6%Film with least screen time: Invasion of Astro-Monster, 6%(Photo by ©DeLaurentiis Entertainment Group courtesy Everett Collection)We broke this round up into percentages of screen time. If a monster is on-screen for 30 minutes of a 100-minute film, it means they’re on-screen for 30% of the film’s running time. If we simply added up screen time it wouldn’t be fair as Godzilla has been in many more movies. So, we found and utilized some very reliable sources and prior Rotten Tomatoes editorials to come up with our numbers (the latter also explains why more on-screen time is better in monster movies).Godzilla and Kong’s first films gave us a clear clue as to who would be victorious in this round. In 1933, King Kong ran amok for 18 of the film s 125 minutes. In comparison, Godzilla was only on-screen for eight minutes of his 98-minute debut in 1954. Then, in 1962 when they battled, King Kong appeared for 16 minutes while Godzilla only popped up for nine. Historically, Kong has always enjoyed more screen time, and the trend continues in the MonsterVerse, as Kong is on-screen for 14 minutes in Kong: Skull Island, while Godzilla can only be seen for 22 combined minutes in Godzilla (10) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (12). Kong wins!Godzilla: 2 Kong: 2Round 5 Property DestructionKing Kong: Estimated .5 billion (adjusted for inflation)  The destruction of Atami Castle was very expensive. Also, trains aren’t cheap. Throw in damage (or destruction) to theaters, cars, helicopters, the city of Atami in general, tanks, streets and sidewalks, trolleys, and airplanes, and you have easily over billion in damages.Godzilla: We don t even know where to begin  He has destroyed numerous cities, including Tokyo multiple times. The submarine he destroyed in Godzilla (1998) is worth 0 million alone.  Dwayne Johnson and his 13 trillion in damage would be jealous.(Photo by ©Warner Bross. Pictures)Between Tokyo, San Francisco, Hawaii, New York City, Fukuoka, Tokai, Osaka, Yokohama, Nagoya, Paris, Kyoto, Tateyama and about a dozen other cities, Godzilla has done his best to keep construction crews working around the world. His worldwide tussles and rampages have caused trillions of dollars in damage, as multiple cities, bridges, and skyscrapers have had to be rebuilt (multiple times). On top of destroying cities, Godzilla has also laid waste to expensive Antarctic laboratories, nuclear submarines, and iconic bridges that cost billions to build. Every time Godzilla takes a step, he leaves a massive footprint in the concrete, which is impressively costly in itself. The trillions of dollars in repairs are no exaggeration, as analysts suggest that just one attack on Tokyo would cost up to 5 billion in damages. While vastly mismatched here, though, King Kong is no slouch, as he’s wrecked his fair share of buildings and helicopters. His battle with Mechani-Kong in King Kong Escapes wreaked havoc on Tokyo, as skyscrapers, houses, and other buildings were flattened. Also, his destruction of the Atami Castle in King Kong vs. Godzilla cost a lot of money, as Japanese castles can cost up to 6 million to build. Let’s not forget that he’s caused a ton of damage in New York City on multiple occasions, as he’s left skyscrapers in need of repair and cable cars flattened. So, while he hasn’t come anywhere near Godzilla in regards to destruction, he has nothing to feel bad about. He’s smashed a lot of things, too.Godzilla: 3 Kong: 2Round 6 Most Impressive VictoryKing Kong: Godzilla in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)Godzilla: Gigan, Zilla, Kumonga, Kamakuras, Rodan, King Caesar, Anguirus, Ebirah, Hedorah, and Keizer Ghidorah in Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)(Photo by Everett Collection)Despite the fact that Godzilla has battled dozens of monsters and won, King Kong gets the point here for actually defeating Godzilla in King Kong vs. Godzilla. What makes Kong’s win impressive is that he got the win away from home against a larger, stronger opponent. Not only that, he was drugged before the fight to make his transportation easier, which means he was probably drowsy and dehydrated after the long journey. Do yourself a favor and watch the original fight. It’s a legit bunkhouse brawl that features the two monsters rolling in the dirt and winging sloppy punches at each other — it’s beautiful. It’s worth noting that Godzilla has the greatest bragging rights here because of what he did in Godzilla: Final Wars. The 2004 film features him defeating Gigan, Zilla, Kumonga, Kamacuras, Rodan, King Caesar, Anguirus, Ebirah, Hedorah, and Keizer Ghidorah. Godzilla ran through a who’s-who of monsters, and the movie ended with him pulverising Keizer Ghidorah with the deluxe version of his red spiral atomic breath.Kong’s victories against Mechani-Kong, the skullcrawlers, dinosaurs, water creatures, and snakes are all super impressive, and he deserves to win this round for the upset he pulled on Godzilla. That said, Godzilla knows that what he accomplished in Final Wars is legendary, and we don t think he ll lose any sleep over this one.Godzilla: 3 Kong: 3Tiebreaker Lightning RoundBest Fight: King Kong vs. the Tyrannosaurus Rex in King Kong (1933)(Photo by Everett Collection)You might be thinking we’re joking, but the Kong vs. T-Rex brawl in King Kong is a legendary piece of work — and it features the first time Kong is seen fighting anything. Also, props to Kong for landing a sweet single-leg takedown during the fight. It’s actually quite realistic, and still looks great today.Godzilla: 3 Kong: 4Better Evolution: Godzilla(Photo by ©New World courtesy Everett Collection)Kong has always been something of a sympathetic, misunderstood character, but since his first appearance in 1954, Godzilla has gradually progressed from angry irradiated sea monster to Earth’s protector. Not bad, and his turnaround wins him the round easily.Godzilla: 4 Kong: 4Best Villain: Godzilla Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)We know that the humans in King Kong are horrible, and their greed leads to the death of Kong (many times in the various films). However, no human is as villainous as Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, who made his first appearance in the 1964 film Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. Ghidorah is the ultimate villain because it would destroy the world and laugh about it while Godzilla lies defeated at its feet. It’s an easy win, and it seals the deal for Godzilla.Godzilla: 5 Kong: 4Godzilla Wins! There you have it! After a grueling battle, Godzilla emerges victorious and wins the decision. Will the new film mirror these results? Could it change the outcome? We ll just have to wait and see.Godzilla vs. Kong is in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, 2021.On an Apple device? 2. 公平游戏环境
如果你是LOL老玩家的话,LOL手游不一定就能给你感觉上手快、手感佳,我建议真要用手机打发时间的还是去玩王者。亚博论坛APPEver since Jason Momoa (Aquaman) played fictional warrior chieftain Khal Drogo, leader of a tribe of 40,000 Dothraki horsemen on Game of Thrones, the actor has used his clout to tell stories of Native American tribes — in modern day on the series The Red Road or movie Road to Paloma, or in a historical setting on Netflix series Frontier. His Apple TV+ series See is set 600 years from today, and the tribes that exist in this fictional future have lived through a global pandemic that decimated humankind and left survivors blind. Despite the differences between See’s tribes and Native American tribes, Momoa saw parallels.Take an in-depth look at See with these seven these things we learned about the series from Momoa, other cast members, and director Francis Lawrence.1. THE TRIBES OF THE OLD WEST ARE REBORN ON SEE(Photo by Apple TV+)Momoa confirmed that it’s no coincidence the survivors of See divided into tribes. He said See creator Steven Knight conceived the tribes like a classic Western.“When I first talked to Steven Knight, he is really, really fascinated with all the Native American cultures, like all the tribes,” Momoa told Rotten Tomatoes. “He really wanted to make a Western almost in the sense of having Comanches, Apaches, and all the different types of tribes like the Payans and the Alkenny.”Momoa s Baba Voss is a warrior of the Alkenny tribe, which is subject to oppression by the rulers of the Payan kingdom. “I think it stems out to all different types of tribes and not just to the Native [American] culture,” Momoa continued. “I think we cross over a lot of things in this. Just by eliminating vision, you re eliminating racism. You re eliminating color and you can sense a lot more evil than good when you re down to senses smell, touch, and feel.”2. THE ALKENNY TRIBE REFLECTS THEIR LAND(Photo by Apple TV+)The Alkenny live in the mountains high above other tribes. They’ve set up rope trails in the woods along the hills and rock barricades to keep other tribes out. The land they inhabit speaks volumes about the character of the Alkenny, even though they never mention it.Lawrence, who directed the last three Hunger Games movies, directed the first three episodes of See, and established the world of the show. Lawrence said he and Knight decided where the tribes came from first and that determined their tribal aspects.“Most of the decisions that we made for any given tribe were where they were geographically, and starting to think about how they might live and what they might have at their disposal based on geography,” Lawrence said. “So the Alkenny at the beginning of the show is a mountain tribe, and so everything we sort of designed for them was just based really on geography.”Voss is the Alkenny’s military leader. Paris (Alfre Woodard) is a more peaceful Alkenny elder. Woodard said if you stick with See, you’ll see that not all tribes are as culturally evolved as the Alkenny.“We d like to think that we are the most civilized, enlightened, highly developed,” Woodard said. “Some of the other tribes that you’re going to meet if you watch all the way through the eight episodes — people are making love, making war, having babies, doing life.”3. THE PAYANS RULE WITH AN IRON, AND ELECTRIC, FIST(Photo by Apple TV+.)Sylvia Hoeks plays Queen Kane, ruler of the Payan kingdom, which has electricity, and she lords over the other tribes.“She uses the turbines as gods voices,” Hoeks said. “In episode 2, one of the lords tells me the gods now only sing with two voices. That means that one turbine is broken and that means that she is losing power. So her way of ruling is very much by distance. People shouldn t come near, because then they ll feel how emotional she really is and how vulnerable she really is.”Viewers can see the differences between the industrial Payan world and the natural Alkenny world. Kane is also so paranoid, she’s installed noisemakers in every room so she can always hear if someone is coming. If other tribes want access to her electricity, they have to pay. Tamacti Jun, played by Christian Camargo, is the Royal Tax Collector and Witchfinder General who collects for Kane.“This is sort of the largest of the ruling class really, her and the Payans,” Camargo said. “There s not that many people on the planet in this story. I think the total is two million in the whole world left, after this virus sweeps through. So these monarchies are very powerful, because there s a limited supply of humans. And they re all very dependent on her because she runs the energy, the God flame, the power. So it s extremely manipulative, in a way.”5. A BLIND MAN TAUGHT THE SEE ACTORS HOW NOT TO SEE(Photo by Apple TV+)Joseph A. Strechay was See’s blindness consultant for the sighted actors. Lawrence said in a press conference that many of the cast members had to break sighted habits, like nodding when someone else talks, because blind people wouldn’t nod to other blind people.Hera Hilmar, who plays Voss’s wife Maghra, copped to nodding.“I definitely once nodded,” Hilmar said. “I feel like maybe there s a sort of slight going into a nod that might be in the show. Maybe that lives still in our muscle memory 600 years from now up to a point.”Even Momoa struggled to unlearn sighted habits.“I got called out a lot,” Momoa said. “Hera s really good. It s tough because you can see when you focus and you know it. You can t focus in on anything. You literally have to see this and this has to all go fuzzy. You have to take it all in and you can t really be in one spot.”6. TWO ALKENNY CAN SEE, BUT IT S A SECRET(Photo by Apple TV+)It has been 600 years since anyone could see, so when Kofun (Archie Madekwe) and Haniwa (Nesta Cooper) are born with sight, they keep it secret. Voss keeps their secret too, fearing how people like Kane might use them if she knew they could see.“The Alkenny are more of a hidden tribe,” Cooper said. “They don t really go out and mesh with the other tribes or villages in the area. They re very, very rooted in their culture and their customs and rituals. They re also a very religious tribe as well.”Madekwe added, “The appreciation as well for those customs and rituals and that idea of community and stuff, that s what my character has learned to hold most dear to him. That s where Kofun and me were different.”You might never see it on the show, but Cooper thought about what Haniwa’s childhood might have been like. Even if she could see, she’d have to play with friends who couldn’t and couldn’t know she could see.“When we went through I blindness training, we all were like, ‘OK, what kind of games do you think we played when we were younger? What were songs that we sang that our mother sang to us when we were sad? What happens when a person passes away in the Alkenny?’” Cooper speculated. “These are all things that we all were trying to figure out together.”7. THE ALKENNY ARE NOT ALONE IN THE WOODS(Photo by Apple TV+)The premiere of See showed what a formidable force the Alkenny are in battle, fending off an enemy tribe. It’s not only invaders who threaten the Alkenny. There are still all the dangers of the forest, as Voss finds out when he has to stand his ground against a bear. “I had to get off of work and then go train with bear many times. He s very cute and cozy: ‘Come here, brother,’” Momoa said with a bear-cuddling gesture. “It was amazing. He s huge. He s nine-foot tall when he stands on his feet, hind legs.”If anyone in the insurance department is reading this, Lawrence was adamant that Momoa did not actually wrestle the bear. “No, Jason could not actually touch the bear,” Lawrence said. “The trainer could touch the bear. The bear was actually quite friendly, which made filming that sequence much more difficult than I wanted it to be, because the bear was a little lazy, a little grumpy, and sort of friendly. So it made it hard for it to look as aggressive as I wanted.”Four episodes of See are now available on Apple TV+.Like this? Summer is approaching, and cinematically speaking, there are plenty of places to go during these hotter months, but nothing seems like a better destination than In the Heights. Once you see the nearly unanimous rave reviews of the upcoming musical — directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) based on the Broadway smash by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) — you’ll want to book this virtual trip to the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. Here’s what critics are saying about In the Heights:Is this THE movie to see this summer? In the Heights is a knockout… This one deserves to be the film of the summer.  Manuel Betancourt, That ShelfIn The Heights’ irrepressible energy is the perfect note on which to kick off this summer’s blockbuster season.  Danette Chavez, AV ClubEvery summer should have a movie like this one.  Joshua Rivera, Polygon[It’s] more than just a movie. It’s more than just a musical. It’s an event.  Anna Menta, DeciderIn the Heights isn’t just a movie, it’s a movement.  Matt Rodriguez, ShakefireCould it even be the movie of the year? There may not be a bigger cardiac rush this year than In the Heights. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyOne of the best films of the year, In the Heights is a special experience. Adriana Gomez-Weston, We Live EntertainmentOne of the best films of the year that is perfect in almost every way. Matt Rodriguez, ShakefireIt’s one of the liveliest and most moving films you’re likely to see this year. Siddhand Adlakha, IGN Movies(Photo by Macall Polay/©Warner Bros.)Will fans of the original Broadway production be happy with it?Bursting with life, love and melody, it amplifies the mega-wattage of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway show, transforming it into a jubilant cinematic experience. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionChu perfectly captures the energy of — and builds upon — Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical. Anna Menta, DeciderChu’s vision expands and enriches the show’s rendering of Washington Heights into a moving spectacle, elevating mundane mornings or trips to the pool into something mesmerizing and exhilarating. Monica Castillo, The WrapIt’s a musical adaptation that feels grand and intimate in equal measure; there’s plenty of pizzazz to go around but Chu knows just when to zero in on small details to make this effervescent musical sing. Manuel Betancourt, That Shelf[It’s] a triumphant adaptation… In its joyous excess, In the Heights makes a case for adapting Broadway musicals into Hollywood cinema. Joshua Rivera, PolygonWhat about fans of movie musicals in general? In the Heights is proof that the movie musical isn’t dead — it simply needed a little flavor. Juan Barquin, The Film StageEven as it calls back great movie musicals both old and new, it also feels like a great leap forward for the genre. Manuel Betancourt, That ShelfThis is the very best of what a movie musical can be. Anna Menta, DeciderIt’s exceptional and rapturous, as all great musicals should aspire to be. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIt does what a great musical should do. It makes you feel alive. Siddhand Adlakha, IGN MoviesIt’s the best Hollywood musical in years. Jacob Oller, Paste Magazine(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)How are the musical numbers? Each one feels impossibly more iconic than the one that came before it. Anna Menta, DeciderAlmost all the songs are bangers that keep emotions high — you’ll weep, you’ll cheer, you’ll hum the songs to yourself on the way out of the theater. Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineAlthough not perfect in execution, the musical numbers of this adaptation take characterization to new heights as they each respond to the popular music of the character’s country of origin. Orlando Maldonado, The Playlist[Chu’]s end goal seems to be doing the mostest for each musical number, which doesn’t necessarily correspond to doing the bestest. Martin Tsai, Critic s NotebookHow is Jon M. Chu s direction? In the Heights is the movie he was destined to make, and going forward, I hope to see Chu create more musicals for the ages. Alan Cerny, Vital ThrillsOne exciting aspect of the whole experience is Chu s vision on what a movie musical can be… [He] inherently understands that musicals are magical, no matter how small and realistic the plot. Erin Strecker, MashableChu hits a lot more often than he misses, and always when it counts most. David Ehrlich, IndieWireMr. Chu’s abrupt transitions between naturalistic street scenes and the soundstage are characteristic of an inconsistent and incoherent style. Martin Tsai, Critic s NotebookWhile the spontaneity of the dance numbers ultimately works in Chu’s favor, the frequent close-ups do not, and it makes me wish he showed the potential for splashy musicals that he did in his Step Up movies. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmAt times, I found myself a little frustrated with Chu’s directing choices… I wanted to yell HOLD STILL! so I could see amazing performers — and they are all truly fantastic — do their thing. Alissa Wilkinson, Vox(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Are there any standout performances? The cast is uniformly excellent, with special notice to Anthony Ramos whose charisma leaps off the screen. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsOne of the most charismatic and radiantly likable performances you’ll ever see on a screen of any kind, Anthony Ramos plays Usnavi as a naturalized storyteller with a twinkle in his eye. David Ehrlich, IndieWireThe ensemble assembled is out-of-this-world stellar. Ramos and Hawkins turn in top shelf performances. Grace gives a career-defining turn… Merediz is a graceful powerhouse. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIt’s hard to pick a favorite performance, but with soul-stirring, son-infused Paciencia Y Fe, Merediz reminds us why she’s Latinx acting royalty. Danette Chavez, AV ClubWhile the entire ensemble cast shines, the film is Merediz’s, and she’ll likely be in conversation during the coming award season. Adriana Gomez-Weston, We Live EntertainmentDoes it have a message? In the Heights contains a message of hope that’s well-needed right now. Adriana Gomez-Weston, We Live EntertainmentIn The Heights’ timely story has a topical message that feels right at home in a musical setting… that’s reinvigorated by the way that Huedes adapts her own book into the realities of today. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlend[It’s] a bit heavy-handed at times with its messaging. Juan Barquin, The Film Stage(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)How important is the film s Latinx representation? What I love most about In the Heights is how Latino culture is represented front and center and is not just some afterthought saved for a scene or two. Matt Rodriguez, ShakefireWhat makes the adaptation of In the Heights so remarkable is that it is a major Hollywood musical that allows its Latino characters to live normal lives, outside of gang or narco violence and outside of stereotypes. Monica Castillo, The WrapIn the Heights pulls off the impossible as it accurately represents the Dominican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, and many other Latin diasporas in the United States. Orlando Maldonado, The PlaylistWhat’s most special about In the Heights is that it shines a light on an often overlooked community on film. Adriana Gomez-Weston, We Live EntertainmentThe film ultimately comes off as a corporate vision of celebrating diversity. Martin Tsai, Critic s NotebookBut is it also a movie for everyone? Not everyone is going to feel represented when they watch In the Heights. That’s an impossible task for any movie. Yet [it] can represent many things for many different viewers. Monica Castillo, The Wrap[It’s] a big Hollywood musical that’s not just for Latinx people, but for fans of Broadway, Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s cult of personality, and musical theater in general. They’re going to flock to this film like it’s a hot new brunch spot in Crown Heights. Joshua Rivera, PolygonAre there any problems with the movie? Not all of the updates are seamless; some of the meaningful tension from the original is sacrificed for an unambiguously happy ending. Danette Chavez, AV ClubNarrative and pacing issues… including the very real defanging of the source material’s more complex relationships which create a kind of generic happy-happy joy-joy feeling. Scott Mendelson, ForbesHawkins isn’t charismatic enough to elevate a paper-thin character when placed against a star like Grace. Juan Barquin, The Film StageNot all character arcs are as strong as others, specifically when it comes to Vanessa’s. Her internal and external stakes aren’t brought together nearly as cohesively as her love interest’s. Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Should we see it on the big screen if we can?Dreams like this, whether they be large or small, need a big screen to be truly seen; and In The Heights is absolutely worthy of being made into a big time moviegoing experience. Mike Reyes, CinemaBlendSeeing this massive, guileless, heartfelt piece of Hollywood entertainment on the big screen is like coming home after a long year in exile only to find that it’s still there, and maybe even better than you remembered. David Ehrlich, IndieWireSee it with a crowd that will applaud every song and show-stopping dance number. Mike Ryan, Uproxx[It] couldn’t come at a better time and absolutely must be seen in a theater… The experience is absolutely euphoric, and should be seen surrounded by as many friends and family as one can gather. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsIn the Heights is a stunning, triumphant return to the cinema that reminds us again and again and again why we love seeing movies on the big screen, together. Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineWill we want to see it again and again? When the credits rolled on Jon M. Chu’s joyous, colorful, pulse-pounding, and hopeful In the Heights, all I could think of was how badly I wanted them to restart the film. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsIn the Heights was the last film I caught inside of a movie theater in 2020. I have not stepped foot in one since that advance press screening last spring… There is no film I am more eager to watch amidst an audience than this ode to the beauty of crowds, to the value of solidarity, and to the pleasures of community. 6.59.1 9月喜迎(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Was Jim Carrey’s 1994 the single best year for a relative newcomer to the big screen ever? Or was it just the single best year for any actor – period? Consider that in this 12-month span, the In Living Color star appeared in three movies that were smash hits at the time and have gone on to become comedy classics: The Mask, Dumb Dumber, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Each would spawn catchphrases, sequels, and remain in the pop culture conversation almost three decades on, but only one stands out from the otherwise-Fresh pack for earning itself a big green splat on our Tomatometer. That film is Ave Ventura, which featured arguably Jim Carrey’s most Jim Carrey performance, a fact that split critics almost evenly – the movie is Rotten at 49% – between those who were repelled by his rubber-faced gonzo efforts and those who felt Carrey was the best thing about this sophomoric story of a stolen football mascot and the quest to track it down. (Still, reviews were kinder to the 1994 movie than they were to its sequel, released just a year later: Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls was slapped with a Rotten Tomatometer score of just 25%.)Were the critics talking out of their… ahem, asses? Or are these widely beloved films genuine loooooosers when we take a clear-eyed look back at them? That’s what we’re asking in the latest episode of our podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), in which we tackle two movies for the first time ever: Ace Ventura and its bigger-budget, higher-concept, maybe-funnier(?) sequel. With all that film to tackle, we had to bring in the big guns, and this week joining our hosts Mark Ellis and Jacqueline Coley is stand-up comedian, actor, and director of the new – Fresh! – film, The Opening Act, Steve Byrne. In the ep, they talk about the epic talent of Jim Carrey, the challenge of comedy that doesn’t always age well – yes, we get into the problematic stuff here – and whether comedy sequels are inherently cursed.

When he did finally debut in theaters, under the guidance of Sam Raimi, he not only kicked off one of the most successful superhero franchises ever, but also helped lay the groundwork for the massive paradigm shift in Hollywood that would eventually bring us the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, for starters. Of course, Sony Pictures efforts to retain the rights to the character have famously resulted in two reboots and a parallel animated series, but the results overall have been rather spectacular. Raimi s original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the MCU-related films with Tom Holland in the role, and the animated Into the Spider-Verse have all largely been critically acclaimed money-makers, and even the first of Andrew Garfield s two outings as the famous wallcrawler is generally well regarded. Spidey may be a late bloomer compared to his DC counterparts, but he s been the most consistent solo hero of them all.5. Back to the Future(Photo by Universal Pictures)Average Tomatometer Score/Rank: 78% (12th)Average Audience Score/Rank: 85.7% (4th)Average Domestic Box Office/Rank: 8,209,623 (16th)Films: Back to the Future, Back to the Future Part II,

(Photo by Marvel/ABC)Although superheroes came to dominate comic books with the arrivals of the Justice League and the Fantastic Four in the 1960s, horror comics were big business in the decade prior with publisher EC Comics leading the pack. Successful titles like The Vault of Horror also became a lightning rod in the decade s juvenile delinquency scare. A Senate sub-committee was formed to determine of horror comics were poisoning the youth of America and rumblings of government intervention scared the comic book industry as a whole. DC Comics, Marvel, and Archie Comics (and a few other now-defunct publishers) forestalled any sort of regulation by agreeing to form their own self-censoring body, the Comics Code Authority. Though intended to ensure wholesome reading for youngsters, the CCA had a second, potentially more sinister purpose: preventing EC Comics from publishing horror comics. As EC publisher Bill Gaines put it in the documentary Comic Book Confidential, the CCA s first act was to ban almost every word used in EC s titles.Of course, the code also meant DC, Marvel, and Archie would avoid horror elements in their comics as well. But this restriction became less of a concern for the CCA in the early 1970s (well after EC became known for Mad Magazine). Marvel quickly introduced Morbius this Living Vampire in the pages of Spider-Man and began publishing The Tomb of Dracula. The series introduced the prominent horror figure into its comic universe and marked the debut of the day-walking vampire hunter Blade. Soon, Ghost Rider and other horror-tinged characters appeared in the Marvel universe. Anticipating the code changes, DC revived House of Secrets as a horror title in 1969 and spun off its recurring Swamp Thing feature in 1972. These titles represented a marriage of horror and the superhero which continues to this day. They would also inspire the horror titles of the 1990s independent market which never faced the Comics Code Authority or its restrictions. And as television continues to mine comics for inspiration, horror characters (and horror titles) are finally making their mark on networks and streaming services. Some lean into the graphic nastiness of horror conventions, while others go for more subtle terrors. But which are the most successful? Let s take a look at the five scariest comic book characters to grace the screen so far and see how they bring elements of horror to the comic book show subgenre.Ghost Rider | Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 95%Burning an indelible impression into S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fourth season, Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna) first appeared to Daisy (Chloe Bennet) as Robbie Reyes, a kid with car and a sense of justice. But when she pressed the issue of his apparent vigilantism, she met the Rider. Bursting forth from Robbie’s skull, the character had an aspect body horror about him. Later, viewers grasped the real terror as Robbie slowly let Daisy and Coulson (Clark Gregg) know the truth: the previous Rider – who may or may not have been Johnny Blaze – saved Robbie from a car wreck and passed the Rider onto him. Once bonded, the Spirit of Vengeance learned the accident was meant as a reprisal against Robbie’s uncle Eli (José Zuñiga), a would-be crime lord attempting to use the mystical Darkhold to further his plans. The Rider and Robbie formed an uneasy alliance as they became protectors of East L.A. Nonetheless, the Rider s interest in serving vengeance on Eli meant their partnership was always uneasy.Subsequent terrors included the Rider’s possession of Mack (Henry Simmons), the moment he finally dragged Eli to Hell, and his haunting deal with Coulson. The basic horror element here is, of course, demonic possession. And while more gruesome and graphic scenes were downplayed (this is still ABC after all), the terror of the Rider comes not just from his look, but from the way people feel when he inhabits them and the last traumatic effects. The series played him properly as supernatural force even the seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D. agents found terrifying. The Walkers | The Walking Dead 80%, Fear the Walking Dead 75%, and the Upcoming Third Walking Dead Series(Photo by AMC)How can we have a list of the scariest comic book characters on television without mentioning the Walkers of AMC’s various Walking Dead programs. Even if none of the shows use the word, they still trade in the existential horror of zombies — the notion that your body will be absorbed into some mindless mass of flesh after you die. Beyond that, zombie fiction also comes with a healthy dose of claustrophobia and the absolute terror of potential killing your own loved-ones once they turned. Also, because everyone in The Walking Dead world is a bad day from becoming a Walker, death takes on a second, awful meaning. But beyond the intellectual horrors of the zombie concept, the Walkers are incredible special effects. For the last decade, Greg Nicotero and his KNB EFX Group have done amazing things on television budgets and schedules to make Walkers ooze, crawl, drip, and gross out viewers. Sure, the Walkers are often just a mass of bodies swarming encampments – and, to be fair, that mass is terrifying – but the featured Walkers realized by KNB will remind viewers just how discussing and terrible zombification would be.Ramsey Rosso and His Blood Brothers  | The Flash 89%The most recent entry on the list takes some of its cues from the Walkers, but offers the classic image of the zombie a superhero upgrade thanks to dark matter and some occasionally dodgy CGI. Debuting in last week’s episode of The Flash, but getting a proper workout this week, the corpses controlled by Ramsey Rosso (Sendhil Ramamurthy) represent a dose of genuine horror movie tropes in the generally bright world of The Flash. Now changed by his strange dark-matter-and-blood substance, Rosso needs to feed on the living to maintain his existence – shades of a vampire there – but must first generate intense fear in them for the blood infusion to be effective. And if those ideas weren t terrifying enough, he can also control the bodies of his victims in a manner reminiscent of the Walkers before they eventually dissolve into more of that blood-like ooze. The effects work may not be up to par with The Walking Dead, but the ideas are effective and the blood brothers oozy ends are particularly gross.Rosso and his blood-kin also represent a new kind of horror – the sort which occurs when your work starts owning you. Rosso is so driven to cure his HLH that he is willing to sacrifice his own humanity – and the humanity of those he meets – to do it. Oh, and one supposes there is an element of egotism there, as well. Call it a critique of late-stage capitalism or the dangers of an out-of-whack work/life balance, but the results are pretty consistent with the sort of themes one finds under the decaying flesh of a zombie. And considering how humdrum the last few Flash villains have been, a horror-tinged adversary like Rosso is a welcome change.Jason Woodrue | Swamp Thing 92%(Photo by DC Universe)One of the great disappointments of DC Universe’s decision to cancel Swamp Thing after one year was that we only had one quick scene with Jason Woodrue (Kevin Durand) as the monstrous Floronic Man. It is a great scene in which Matt Cable (Henderson Wade) walks into the Marais Sherriff’s HQ and discovers all his coworkers dead. The power is out, the shadows are deep, and when Matt can make out distinct images, they are of persistent vegetation. Then he comes upon the Floronic Man, now seemingly driven mad from becoming a plant-based lifeform. The two exchange brief words, but the creature knows what it wants to do – kill anyone it encounters. This post-credit scene is a marvel, but it represent the culmination of the work Durand put into the previous ten episodes of the series establishing Woodrue as one of its great slow-burn menaces. And considering the show’s titular hero is himself a body-slashing figure of horror himself, that is saying something.Invited to Marais by local businessman Avery Sunderland (Will Patton) to investigate why the local swamp is having a bad reaction to his special “accelerant,” Woodrue appears as a man more invested in plants than people. The notable exception: his ailing wife Carolyn (Selena Anduze), who has a form of early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Woodrue hopes to find a cure for her in the swamp and its reaction to his formula, but his offbeat personality changes into something menacing once he chances a look at Abby Arcane’s (Crystal Reed) sample of Swamp Thing’s (Derek Mears) plant matter. Soon it grows into an obsession and leads him to a place where he is willing to use his wife as a lab rat to prove he can save her.The terror here is, of course, that of a spouse gone wrong. And while it might be on a more operatic scale, the final moments of Woodrue and Carolyn’s relationship could just as easily be a more naturalistic episode of domestic violence. But since this is Swamp Thing, the ideas are heightened and Durand’s performance, already on the edge from the moment he first appears on screen, explodes into something altogether horrifying. The Reverse-Flash | The Flash 89%(Photo by Jordan Nuttall/The CW)While some of Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) other Speedster rogues may lean into more obvious horror clichés – Zoom, for one, would be at home in a film in which he slaughters camp counselors by the score – the original Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanagh) consistently pulled off being the scariest character on comic book television in 2014 and 2015 while wearing a yellow suit. Thanks to his blurred face, crackling red eyes, and his mastery of speed, the character exuded menace and generated terror whenever he zipped into the frame. And to that Cavanagh’s stellar performance (both with and without vocal distortion), he continues to be the benchmark of villainy on that show. Consider his appearance during the 100th episode, in which he generated a season’s worth of chills in just three short scenes and out of costume. But in form of the Reverse-Flash, he is a sight to behold. A vision of terror fused with the generally heroic aspects of The Flash s own design. The success of that vision made Barry s own go at being a nightmare of himself — the time remnant known as Savitar — far less successful. Of course, it also proves more is less as the simple methods and motives of the Reverse-Flash still successful engage audiences when villains like The Thinker and Savitar fail to impress. His form of terror may not be as universal as demons or zombies. Indeed, it is very personal to Barry and, oddly enough, Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes). But it nevertheless manages to inspire some nightmares for viewers of The Flash. He is that relentless thing looking to tear down your accomplishments and undermine everything you aspire to be and a form of depression personified — with violence, calculation, and Cavanagh s voice.Which characters do you think are the scariest that have jumped from comic books to television? Portrayed as a group of misfits sheltering fellow oddity Garfield Logan (Ryan Potter), the characters also distinguished themselves from the Titans cast thanks to their strange circumstances, humor, and a family dynamic Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) is far from cultivating.Who and what are the Doom Patrol? How far back does the group s DC Comics history go, and what does it say about the upcoming series? Read on for a primer on the world’s strangest heroes.Secret Origins(Photo by DC Universe)The Doom Patrol debuted as a strip in 1963 My Greatest Adventure #80, written by Arnold Drake and Bob Haney with art by Bruno Premiani. The initial four-member team was comprised of Rita Farr (a.k.a. Elasti-girl), an Olympic swimmer-turned-actor who can stretch to tremendous sizes after she is exposed to unusual volcanic gases; Cliff Steele (a.k.a. Robotman), a race car driver whose brain is saved after a car crash destroys his body; Larry Trainor (a.k.a. Negative Man), a test pilot whose body became negatively charged after exposure to radiation during a test-flight; and Dr. Niles Caulder (a.k.a. The Chief), a paraplegic genius and inventor who inspires the rest to use their augmented abilities for the greater good even as their conditions leave them outcast from a society which fears and hates them. If the premise reminds you of X-Men, which debuted two months after the first Doom Patrol strip, Drake always suspected Stan Lee somehow caught wind of his concept — though in his later years, he suggested they both reached for fruit from the same creative vineyard independently and simultaneously. While Drake s new superhero strip saved My Greatest Adventure from cancellation, the title was renamed Doom Patrol five issues later. In 1965 s Doom Patrol #99, Garfield Logan (a.k.a. Beast Boy) was introduced as the survivor of an experimental cure for a rare disease which gave him the ability to change into any animal. He remained with the group for a time before seeking his fortune in Hollywood and joining the Titans West.Doom Patrol itself survived another three years before its popularity declined and the book was finally cancelled. In response to the cancellation and his own anger toward DC at the time, Drake took the highly unusual step of killing off the team.A new team created by writer Paul Kupperburg — featuring a revived Robotman, a new Negative Woman, and Caulder’s previously unseen wife Celsius — emerged in 1977, but failed to capture the imagination of readers during an infamous downturn in DC s fortunes known as The DC Implosion. Ten years later, Kupperburg tried again with a third Doom Patrol team, but he was replaced in issue #18 by Grant Morrison. The new take on the team, which saw Robotman, the Chief, and Negative Man return with new additions like Crazy Jane — a woman with dissociative personality disorder and a superpower for each of her personas — and a mobile, conscious street known as Danny — yes, an actual sentient city street — is considered one of the definitive versions thanks to its surrealist adventures and reinvention of the Chief as the team’s ultimate enemy. After Morrison’s departure, writers including Rachel Pollack, John Arcrudi, John Byrne, and Keith Giffen took over Doom Patrol to varying degrees of success. In 2016, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way revamped the concept for his DC Young Animal label. Featuring art by Nick Darrington, the new Doom Patrol went in new strange directions while honoring a lot of what came before — Robotman was present as ever while Danny became a world all his own.A Titans Debut(Photo by DC Universe)Much of Drake and Haney’s concept is on display within the Doom Patrol episode of Titans, with hints of Morrison s influence. Fraser gives Cliff a wistful tone as Rachel (Teagan Croft) describes her dinner to him. Bomer’s Negative Man is the definition of hip. Rita Farr (April Bowlby) tries her best to keep her studio-trained composure, but it is easy to see the cracks in her facade as her powers always seem to get the best of her. As a group, though, the strong bond between them is already on display. At this point in Titans own story, it is a welcome relief to see some superpowered beings acting as a family — but it also offers a tease of the dynamic viewers will eventually see on Doom Patrol. With the Chief, played in the episode by a menacing Bruno Bichir, Caulder’s seeming benevolence falls away pretty quickly. By the time he has Rachel strapped to a hospital bed, one is willing to believe he arranged the accidents that caused Cliff, Larry, and Rita to become super-powered oddities.Arguably the most important character to introduce here was Cliff. As a member of every Doom Patrol iteration, he is the de facto face of the whole concept. His condition — a human brain in a robot body — also makes him one of the easiest Doom Patrol characters to “get” and bond with. Luckily, Fraser voices the character as though he’d been playing Cliff for years, which is important as he will be playing Robotman for a long time to come.Doom Patrol 2019(Photo by DC Universe)That long time to come will begin next year with the arrival of DC Universe’s Doom Patrol series. Fraser, Bomer, and Bowlby return as their characters, but actors Jake Michaels and Dwain Murphy, who inhabited the Robotman and Negative Man suits, have been replaced by Riley Shanahan and Matthew Zuk. And in a move that may seem surprising, one key Doom Patrol member will have a new face when they make the leap to their own series: the Chief. In August, the streaming service announced that former James Bond, Timothy Dalton, would take over the Niles Caulder role. It is an inspired choice as Dalton is capable of both the compassion and menace Caulder can offer in equal measure. And after seeing Bichir’s take on the character, it makes sense to dial back Caulder to someone who would believably inspire the devotion Cliff, Larry, and Rita seem to have for the man.Plus there is a story point to be built from Caulder suddenly having a new personality, face, and accent: In the early Doom Patrol strips, the gang did not know the Chief s real name. Circumstances ultimately forced him to divulge these details, but it established Caulder s secretive tendencies. And what better way to establish the grandiose nature of the Chief s secretiveness on screen than for Cliff, Larry, and Rita to learn the man they thought gave them a home was nothing but a proxy? The group seems off to a fine start as Fraser, Bomer, and Bowlby offer the three key characters a lot of life. On the Doom Patrol series, Diane Guerrero will join them as Crazy Jane from Grant Morrison s run. The team will face off against Alan Tudyk’s Mr. Nobody, a character created by Drake for one issue but expanded upon by Morrison into a major team antagonist. The inclusion of the Morrison characters suggests the show will be more consciously absurd than their appearance on Titans would suggest, which would definitely be the right tone for this group. Additionally, missing Titan Cyborg (Jovian Wade) will give the Doom Patrol a mission that is difficult to refuse, but will completely alter their lives forever. The 13-episode series from longtime DC TV producer Greg Berlanti and Being Human s Jeremy Carver is expected to debut in February 2019.It is unclear, however, if Danny the Street will make his presence known.New episodes of Titans are released Fridays on DC Universe. Doom Patrol will premiere in 2019.
