八闽游戏采用百度引擎1(Baidu 2)This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Halloween Kills, Peter Pan Wendy, and Wolfman. This WEEK S TOP STORYBRAD PITT BOARDING BULLET TRAIN FOR JOHN WICK DIRECTOR(Photo by Andrew Cooper/©Columbia Pictures)Brad Pitt has enjoyed steady success throughout his career, even as recently as last year, when his performance in Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood garnered widespread acclaim, but it s been a little while since he appeared in a proper, traditional action film unless, of course, you count his blink-and-you ll-miss-it cameo in Deadpool 2. With that in mind, he s now set to work with the guy who helped re-establish Keanu Reeves as an action star: David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and the aforementioned Deadpool 2). Pitt has signed with Sony Pictures to star in an action thriller called Bullet Train that will be directed by Leitch, whose most recent film was last year s Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 67%). Bullet Train will be an adaptation of the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka and will tell the story of five assassins who find themselves on the same train from Tokyo, which undoubtedly leads to lots of shooting and stabbing and kicking and punching. Because, you know, action.Other Top Headlines1. JUDE LAW IN TALKS FOR CAPTAIN HOOK IN DISNEY S LIVE-ACTION PETER PAN WENDY(Photo by Alex Bailey/©Focus Features)It certainly seems like there have been a lot of live action takes on J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan in recent years, including films as 2003 s Peter Pan (Certified Fresh at 77%), 2015 s Pan (Rotten at 27%), this year s Wendy (Rotten at 37%). One of the companies that has stayed out of the live-action Peter Pan business until this point has actually been the one that would ve seemed the most obvious choice, which is Walt Disney Pictures. Disney s 1953 animated Peter Pan is arguably the play s most famous adaptation, and that film s version of Tinker Bell became an icon for Walt Disney Pictures, used in various opening credit animations over the years. On top of that, Disney is very much in the ongoing process of adapting its most famous animated films into live-action ones. The live-action adaptation of Peter Pan will be called Peter Pan Wendy, and it will be directed by David Lowery, who previously directed the live remake of Pete s Dragon (Certified Fresh at 88%). We don t yet know which young actors will play the title characters (or Tinker Bell, for that matter), but this week, the news broke that Jude Law is in talks with Disney to play the villain, Captain Hook. If he signs on, he will take on a role previously played by the likes of Dustin Hoffman (Hook), Jason Isaacs (Peter Pan), and Hugh Jackman (Pan).2. THE INVISIBLE MAN DIRECTOR ALSO IN TALKS FOR RYAN GOSLING S WOLFMAN (Photo by Saeed Adyani/©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Australia s Leigh Whannell is a producer, director, and screenwriter who got his start collaborating on Saw with future Aquaman director James Wan in a career arc that most recently included Universal Pictures reboot of The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss. That film happened after Universal Pictures scrapped their previous Dark Universe plans for rebooting their classic monsters, which would have included Johnny Depp starring in The Invisible Man and rumors of Dwayne Johnson possibly starring in Wolfman. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic happening just as The Invisible Man was opening in theaters, the film was otherwise a financial success, so Univeral Pictures is moving forward with similar reboots, including Wolfman. Just about a month ago, the news broke that Ryan Gosling was the studio s top choice to star in Wolfman, and it now appears that Gosling has indeed signed on, as Universal Pictures is in talks with Leigh Whannell about writing and directing Wolfman to continue the thread between The Invisible Man and their ambitious werewolf movie. Whannell and Gosling have reportedly wanted to work with each other for some time. 3. OPRAH WINFREY LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP TO ADAPT PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING THE 1619 PROJECT (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Last year, The New York Times Magazine began a new series called The 1619 Project, named after the arrival of the first ship of enslaved Africans to the coast of the colony of Virginia. Producer Oprah Winfrey is now collaborating with Lionsgate and The New York Times on a series of feature films and television projects that will be based on The 1619 Project. Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for The 1619 Project, and she will be a key participant in the projects Oprah Winfrey has planned. It is not yet known which of the true stories documented in The 1619 Project will be adapted as feature films, but the Variety s news item references titles like, America Wasn t a Democracy Until Black Americans Made It One and American Capitalism is Brutal: You Can Trace That to a Plantation. The 1619 Project scope will reportedly include  multiple feature films, TV series, documentaries, and other cross-platform content for a global audience. 4. MAZE RUNNER AND JOJO RABBIT STARS SOUGHT FOR PETER FARRELLY S NEXT FILM(Photo by Dee Cercone, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Before winning an Academy Award for Best Picture for Green Book (Certified Fresh at 77%), director Peter Farrelly was probably best known for comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There s Something About Mary. For his next film, Farrelly is returning to the 1960s setting of Green Book with an adaptation of the non-fiction book The Greatest Beer Run Ever, about a young man who traveled to Vietnam to reunite with friends who were soldiers in the war. The first actor to sign on for The Greatest Beer Run Ever a few weeks ago was Viggo Mortensen, who also starred in Green Book. This week, Mortensen was reportedly joined by Dylan O Brien, one of the stars of MTV s Teen Wolf (who s speculated but not confirmed to be playing the lead role). For the female lead, producers are also reportedly eyeing Jojo Rabbit co-star Thomasin McKenzie, but she s not signed yet.5. TIFFANY HADDISH WILL TRAVEL TO AFRICA TO BE CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN (Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Once a separate Hollywood studio, the former DreamWorks SKG, co-founded by Steven Spielberg, has in recent years been divided a few times over, with the live-action production company now being called Amblin Partners (not to be confused with Spielberg s own Amblin Entertainment). Some of the recent films produced by Amblin Partners have included First Man, Best Picture Oscar-winner Green Book, and ten-time Academy Award nominee 1917. Amblin Partners is now developing a comedy for Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, Night School) called Homecoming Queen to be written by Raamla Mohamed, a TV writer who s worked on Scandal and Little Fires Everywhere. Haddish will star in and also produce Homecoming Queen, which is reportedly inspired by Haddish s own experience traveling to Africa thinking she was royalty, only to find out that that designation means something completely different there. Other upcoming movies that share an African royalty theme include Eddie Murphy s sequel Coming 2 America (12/18/2020) and Marvel s Black Panther II (5/6/2022).6. JANELLE MONAE S ACTIVELY PETITIONING TO BE MARVEL S STORM IN X-MEN REBOOT (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Most sites reporting on movie development news try to avoid stories that hew too close to rumors, but every once in a while, a big enough star will actively campaign for a role that it will inevitably become a story, even if there s no deal in negotiation. The most recent example of this came just this week from singer and actress Janelle Monáe (Moonlight, Hidden Figures), whose horror film Antebellum is among those that would have originally been released in theaters if not for the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent interview, Monáe revealed that one of the roles she hopes to take on is the mutant superhero Storm of Marvel s X-Men, who has previously been played in film by both Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp (in X-Men: Apocalypse). Monáe said she brought it up while talking to director Ryan Coogler (currently working on Black Panther II, scheduled for 5/6/2022). It s worth noting that Marvel Studios has not yet announced when any o

(Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic)Another year, another Academy Awards – but this was one we don t think we ll be getting over any time soon. The 92nd Academy Awards will go down in the history books, with Bong Joon-ho s Parasite becoming the first ever foreign-language movie to win Best Picture. And while Parasite s four wins were definitely major highlights of the host-free ceremony – not just because of Joon-ho s promises to get royally wasted after the event – they weren t the only big moments in a night that was marked by some genuinely funny presenters, megastar wins, and a feeling that the right people and movies were winning in the right categories.Recommended: The Full List of 2020 Oscar Winners and NominationsRecommended: The 2020 Oscars Red Carpet GalleryRecommended: The 2020 Best Picture Nominees, Ranked by TomatometerRecommended: All the Winners of the Golden Tomato AwardsThe moments began before the ceremony itself, with Natalie Portman s Dior cape making one of the few political statements of the night (with the exception of Brad Pitt s first remarks upon accepting his award and Joaquin Phoenix s speech, this was a fairly politics-lite Oscars). And then they kept coming thick and fast: incredible music performances, a superhero super team, and shock wins.Check out our pick of the best moments of the 92nd Academy Awards below, and let us know what you thought of the show in the comments below. Natalia Portman Makes A Statement With Her Cape Full of Female Directors(Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage) Those men might have been the ones congratulated by Issa Rae when the Best Director contenders were announced on nominations morning, but it was a group of talented ladies that was celebrated in a very special way on the red carpet on Oscars night. Natalie Portman arrived wearing a Dior cape that was embroidered with the names of a number of female directors who were snubbed by the Academy. Among those honored in Portman s gold stitching: The Farewell director Lulu Wang, Little Women director Greta Gerwig, Atlantics director Mati Diop, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood director Marielle Heller, Portrait of a Lady On Fire director Céline Sciamma, and Honey Boy director Alma Har el.Janelle Monáe Kicks Things Off With Mr. Rogers and Dancing DoppelgängersNo host doesn’t mean no killer opening musical number. The 2020 Oscars kicked off with Janelle Monáe – joined for a spell by Billy Porter – paying tribute to some of the year’s best films. Monáe entered the stage on a Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood-like set, pulled on a red cardigan, and sang “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, before transitioning to her hit “Come Alive (The War of the Roses) surrounded by dancers dressed as the Joker, Queen and Slim, Midsommar cultists, and other characters from the year’s movies. Most awkward moment: Monáe trying to get audience members like Leo and Kathy Bates to sing into her mic. Best moments: The awesome finale and the sight of a family of Us doppelgängers dancing on the Oscars stage.Brad Pitt Tears Up As He Reflects On his Career, Accepting His Award for Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%Brad Pitt was a lock for Best Supporting Actor leading into the night: The only question was – after a string of delightful acceptance speeches during the season – what would he say when he won? Pitt delivered, and then some, with a heartfelt speech in which he dedicated his win to his kids, celebrated his Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino (“one of a kind”), and paid tribute to his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he hugged on his way to the stage. Reflecting on his own journey through the industry, from Thelma and Louise to now, Pitt told the room, “Once upon a time in Hollywood – ain’t that the truth.”Animated Short Hair Love Makes History as Director Matthew A. Cherry Salutes Kobe Bryant“Representation matters deeply, especially in cartoons,” said Hair Love producer Karen Rupert Toliver as she accepted the award for Best Short Film (Animated) and became the first Black woman ever to win an Oscar in any animation category. Toliver was joined on stage by writer, director, and producer of Hair Love, Matthew A. Cherry, who said he made the film to “normalize Black hair” and drew the crowd’s attention California’s CROWN Act, which would protect against discrimination based on hairstyling. Cherry, a former NFL player, dedicated the win to the late Kobe Bryant, saying, “May we all have a second act as great as his was.”Screenplay Surprises: Parasite (2019) 98% and Jojo Rabbit (2019) 80% Win Big Against the Big GunsSome pundits – ahem, us – predicted these two wins, but safer money had Quentin Tarantino winning Best Original Screenplay for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Best Adapted Screenplay going to Greta Gerwig for Little Women. When Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won were announced as winners for Original Screenplay, the room erupted, with stars like Sandra Oh leaping to their feet to celebrate Parasite’s first win of the night. Joon-ho could barely contain his excitement, beaming as he stared at his award as if to say, “Is this really happening?”. Waititi dedicated his win to his mom – or, for Waititi, who signed off with the Maori greeting of “kia ora,” his mum – who introduced him to the book on which Jojo Rabbit was based, Caging Skies.MAYA RUDOLPH and Kristen Wiig Show Why They Should be the Next Oscar Hosts Though Billie Eilish Might not AgreeBy far the best presenters of the evening – and let’s be honest, perhaps of any awards show we’ve seen lately – were Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, who presented the awards for Production Design and Costume Design. They kicked things off with a bit in which they said they were too upset, too steamed, to carry out their duties, before revealing they were acting! Why? To show the likes of Scorsese and Tarantino that they had the range to be cast in their films, of course: “We just wanted them to know we do more than comedy.” In their intro to the costume award, they then sang a medley of clothes-related tunes that ranged from “Vogue” and “Lady in Red” to Sisqo’s “Thong Song.” Hilarious. (The only person who wasn’t into it seemed to be singer Billie Eilish.)Laura Dern Wins First Oscar for Marriage Story (2019) 94% and Pays Tribute to Her ParentsIf it is hard to believe that three-time nominee Laura Dern hadn’t won an Oscar before tonight, it’s even harder to believe that she is now the first and only Oscar winner in her family – a family in which dad is Bruce Dern and mom is Diane Ladd. With an emotional Ladd watching on, Dern thanked the Academy for “the best birthday present ever” and saluted her mom and dad. “Some say never meet your heroes,” Dern said, “but I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents.”Eminem Shows Up To Perform Lose Yourself, Because… Music?!(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Following a fairly earnest montage tribute to the power of songs in film introduced by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who was himself introduced by Anthony Ramos), Eminem took the stage for a room-shaking – and heavily censored – performance of “Lose Yourself.” The song, featured in 8 Mile, won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2003, making Eminem the first hip hop artist to win an Academy Award. Why exactly the song was performed tonight, though, remains something of a mystery. Still, the crowd got into it, with the likes of Kelly Marie Tran and Gal Gadot moving and mouthing along. The same could not be said for Martin Scorsese, who appeared to find the song a little, er, sleepy.Cynthia Erivo Takes the Dolby Theatre to ChurchNot much to say about this: Just watch and listen as Cynthia Erivo performs the Oscar-nominated Stand Up from Harriet. The performance was followed in the commercial break by a well-timed trailer for Genius: Aretha, the upcoming History event in which Erivo plays Aretha Franklin. The Cats Cast Shows They Have a Sense of HumorWearing two costumes that perhaps the filmmakers should have gone with for the actual film, Cats co-stars Rebel Wilson and James Corden presented the award for Best Visual Effects. As cast members of the motion picture Cats, said Wilson, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects. You ll remember that Cats went into theaters with its own effects unfinished.Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Ripley UniteGal Gadot, Brie Larson, and Sigourney Weaver had us dreaming of universe crossovers when they took the stage to introduce composer Eimear Nooneis, who led the orchestra as it played the snippets from Best Original Score nominees and in so doing became the first female to lead the orchestra in the Oscars’ history. The trio said they were going to start a Fight Club, and that men were invited, but Gadot warned: “The loser gets to answer questions from journalists about how it feels to be a woman in Hollywood.” Weaver added, “All women are superheroes.” Fittingly, Best Original Score went to Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker, who became the third woman to win in the category.Joaquin Phoenix Gets His Oscar For Joker (2019) 68%, Quotes Brother River In Moving Talk of JusticeJoaquin Phoenix was quick to ask the crowd to stop as it rose to its feet after Olivia Colman – hilarious as ever in her intro – announced him as Best Actor for Joker. Phoenix was visibly moved by the honor, and took the opportunity on stage to talk about the unifying thread between so many political movements – whether fighting racism or gender inequality or fighting for queer, indigenous, or animal rights , we re talking about the fight against injustice, Phoenix said. He went on to talk about our responsibility to all sentient beings and the environment and finished his remarks, choking up a little, as he quoted a lyric written by his late brother River: “Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.”Renée Zellweger s Comeback Is Complete It was not the most surprising win of the night, but it was one of the most moving. Renée Zellweger accepted the award in tribute to the woman she plays in Judy: Miss Garland this is certainly for you. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019) 98% Sweeps the Night, Becomes First Foreign-Language Movie to Win Best PictureParasite made history as the first foreign-language film to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars, crowning the evening with the night’s biggest award having already taken out Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director for Bong Joon-ho. When Joon-ho accepted South Korea’s first ever win – off its first nomination – for Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film) earlier in the night, he called upon the cast and crew of Parasite to stand and for the crowd to applaud their work, saying he was proud to be the first recipient of the award under its new name. He finished that acceptance speech in English, saying, “I’m ready for a drink tonight,” and later, accepting the award for Best Director, said, “I will be drunk until next morning.”During that speech, Joon-ho paid tribute to his fellow directing nominees, with particular affection given to Martin Scorsese, whose films Joon-ho said he had studied and inspired his love for film.Thumbnail images courtesy Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhat were your biggest highlights of the night? Tell us in the comments. Are you as obsessed with awards as we are? Check out our Awards Leaderboard for 2019/2020. The Villain that Tested Them the MostFassbender: Apocalypse. I mean, I was always, personally, like, does Eric really have to follow this guy? It definitely went against the grain for me, I’ve got to say. But it was Oscar [Isaac], so that was the bit that I was like, OK, well, I would follow Oscar.McAvoy: Yeah. He s a great peer. He s a great fellow Shmactor. But, yeah. Maybe him. I m not sure actually. Trask, maybe? Because I felt like I got to a place of trust with you again, you know? A place where I thought we could be together again… and then you go and drop a stadium on the White House. The Evolution of their RelationshipMcAvoy: I don t feel like it s that different [now]. Do you know what? We had more to do together in First Class and Days of Future Past, less so in Days of Future Past, but we had more to do with each other in every film in the past; Apocalypse there was less to do. Until finally, we find ourselves in this movie saying like three words to each other. So that s how it s changed massively; we don t get to do it. I think it s a great travesty, and one of the great missed opportunities of this incarnation of the X-Men saga.Fassbender: Agreed. We do get to play a game of chess in this last one.McAvoy: We do. We do.Fassbender: We come full circle.(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox)Reflecting on Each Other s PerformanceMcAvoy: My favorite performance of his in [the X-Men films] is definitely First Class because I think that was really, truly, actually a great film balancing an ensemble and giving everybody an arc and stuff, but in terms of who that film is really about, that was the origin story for Magneto in essence. And just getting to see him rock this… not just mutant leader figure, which he wasn t yet, but actually imbue it with a sort of James Bond, espionage, spy-like quality as well. That was just a wicked thing to do with your character.Fassbender: I would say Days of Future Past. Because you really go through the ringer in that one. And just in general, something with James, which is pretty impressive to see, is like, he s got a really good understanding of storytelling, like where the character is in the journey of the character and where it should end up at the end. Just that sort of awareness of a character journey. So much so that what we see in this last film – the germ of it was there in First Class, which was this idea that you had we ve always seen Professor X in such a positive light. He s always so giving and generous, and you were like, well, there s a flip side to that, you know. That there was an element of his ego that was there and to be explored, and of course, we see the whole effect of it here in this movie. So that s been cool to watch over four movies. That s impressive.Team Magneto or Team Professor X?McAvoy: There s a great line in Braveheart from the late actor, great actor, Ian Bannen, who said to Robert the Bruce when he s trying to caution him and say, don t go off and fight with William Wallace, right, even though it s the right thing to do, don t go and do it. He says, It s really easy to like him, isn t it? Because uncompromising men are easy to like. And it s true. Erik s so uncompromising, you re drawn to him. But also, he s always right as well. Humanity is going to stab us in the back, he says. And they do. They always do. So, I think I would go with Erik.Fassbender: I think I m going to go with Charles just because I think in order to move forward, you have to integrate. Because of that alone, I would have to stick with his ideology.(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox)ON “CHERIK” – THE FAN-FICTION LOVE AFFAIR BETWEEN CHARLES AND ERIKMcAvoy: I feel like it might have been due to the “Cherik” shipping that after First Class, they restricted the amount of time we spend on screen together because they realized it was going to cause a lot of problems in certain parts of the world.Fassbender: You know, I think I know where it all started. Remember when we were storming that building in Russia, and we were laying in the long grass just chatting. It was like a scene in Out of Africa or something.McAvoy: Oh, in between takes.Fassbender: Yeah. And that s where, I think, it all started.Making Cherik a Throuple – with an MCU Hero or One of the X-MenFassbender: [After understanding the throuple question] I m going to go Sophie [Turner}, Jean Grey. Because she s the most powerful mutant out there. Well like, you know, if we re going to have a team, we re solid.James: I would definitely want to go with somebody who s a psychic because I think we could have some crazy, mind-bending fun. And so that would either be Jean Grey or Emma Frost.Fassbender: Sticking within our group. Mutants stick together.Dark Phoenix is in theaters now.Like this? Another adaptation of Little Women? Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel has been made into a number of movies, and most of them have been highly regarded — by critics, fans, and awards organizations alike. Greta Gerwig’s new version, which just received a standing ovation at a guild screening, is no different. Well, it is apparently different in that it’s a unique take on the material, mostly for the better, according to the first wave of critics’ social reactions to the movie. Still, we can expect the usual Oscar-worthy performances and a generally enjoyable adaptation. Here’s what critics are saying about Little Women on social media:Have we gotten another great adaptation? It’s lovely. Hannah Woodhead, Little White LiesIt’s inventive and wonderful. Sean Fennessey, The RingerWonderful. A loving, meticulously-crafted adaptation that exceeded my expectations. Heartfelt, moving and a terrific showcase for its extremely talented cast and beloved source material. Kara Warner, People MagazineLittle Women is charming just like the novel/prior versions…Rousing score. Timely as ever. Hard not to cheer. Scott Feinberg, Hollywood ReporterSomeone, please, invent a word stronger than “masterpiece” so I can amply describe Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. More-than-a-masterpiece? Masterpiece 2.0? David Jenkins, Little White LiesIt rules. David Sims, The AtlanticDoes it elicit particularly personal reactions?Jo s lines in Little Women resonate with me completely differently now as a 33 year old single writer. Wanting to remain independent but wanting to be loved. Greta s take on the story made me connect with Jo in a way I never had. As a girl, I just thought she was crazy to reject Laurie.  Amy Kaufman, Los Angeles TimesI ve seen Little Women twice now and it s one of my very favorite movies of the year.  David Canfield, Entertainment WeeklyOne of the most pleasurable cinema experiences of my life.  David Jenkins, Little White Lies(Photo by Sony Pictures)How is this one different from past adaptations?Greta Gerwig takes the straightforward story of Little Women and boldly scrambles it, starting two-thirds of the way through and retelling most of what you remember via flashbacks and cross-cutting. Call it Louisa May Alcott meets 21 Grams. Kyle Buchanan, New York TimesLittle Women has a very strong last third… and a modern interpretation of the novel that shines brightly. I liked her take on it even when it is hard to follow regarding flashbacks. Sasha Stone, Awards DailyWill fans of the book appreciate it?Greta Gerwig delivers a both passionately faithful and gorgeously original take. David Canfield, Entertainment WeeklyThere’s nothing to disparage and many reasons to be pleased with Little Women. Especially, I’m thinking, for those who know the book and have a profound affection for this 19th Century saga about choices, tough terms, romance, heartbreak, love, struggle and artistic aspiration. Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood ElsewhereHow is the ensemble cast? Each role [is] perfectly cast. Scott Feinberg, Hollywood ReporterSaoirse is a fierce Jo, Chalamet/Dern/Streep especially are great in support, and Florence Pugh is astonishing. David Canfield, Entertainment WeeklySaoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh are the standout performances. Gregory Ellwood, The PlaylistExcellent performances from Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh. Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood ElsewhereFlo Pugh and Streep are standouts. Sasha Stone, Awards DailyFor my money, the MVP in Little Women is Florence Pugh…She’s hilarious and winning as Amy, the character best served by Gerwig’s structural gambits. Kyle Buchanan, New York TimesFlorence gets a lot of great notes to play as Amy March and she plays each one pretty much perfectly. As we’re seeing over and over again, she has a screen presence and performing instincts that are pretty god damn incredible. Jordan Crucchiola, Vulture(Photo by Sony Pictures)What about the men?Timothee Chalamet is the best thing about Little Women. He lights up the screen in every scene he’s in. Jazz Tangcay, Awards DailyBest part of Greta Gerwig’s Little Women is the idea that Louis Garrel as a heartthrob will soon be implanted in mainstream American brains. As he should be. Ryan Lattanzio, IndieWireWhat about the contributions behind the camera?Greta Gerwig, writer/director of the new version of Little Women [got] a standing ovation. And it was well deserved! Pete Hammond, Deadline HollywoodFervent, top-notch direction by Greta Gerwig; superb lensing and set design.  Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood ElsewhereAre there any problems?Little Women is charming if not a wee bit long…for such a pretty score it’s overscored? There are moments you just want to hear the girls banter but… nope. Gregory Ellwood, The PlaylistAt best, it’s a fresh approach that makes you rethink familiar material. But it can also make simple plot and character developments a bit harder to locate. Kyle Buchanan, New York TimesI have to say that it didn’t quite grab me as I’d hoped. Flashbacks, curious dream sequences, confusing here and there. Handsome and lusciously authentic, but feels in-and-outish. Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood Elsewhere(Photo by Sony Pictures)Is it an awards contender?Best Picture nominee… maybe? Gregory Ellwood, The PlaylsitThe last three Best Picture winners end happily and portrayed the world as ultimately hopeful. Greta Gerwig’s Little Women is the first movie of the year that does just that. So front runner? Sean Fennessey, The RingerWe’ll see as far as Oscars — nice to have an upbeat option. The 36-year-old actress turned auteur could become the first female two-time best director Oscar nominee. Scott Feinberg, Hollywood ReporterI’m not saying Jo March is Saoirse’s Oscar, but truly her only issue as an actress is that she’s so good makes her roles look so effortless and genuine and complete that she might fall into the Amy Adams camp of being so simply good it’s like Academy voters take her for granted. Jordan Crucchiola, VultureAn award-season cherry. Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood ElsewhereLittle Women is in theaters December 25.八闽游戏On June 22, 36 years have passed since the release of The Karate Kid, the story of an underdog, who explores a life unfamiliar to him, and who — with the help of a grumpy old man — raises himself up to be a champion. The 1984 film, directed by John Avildsen and written by Robert Kamen, had a lasting influence on the movie experience — future sports films would measure their stories against the tenacity and resolve on display in The Karate Kid, and Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, and William Zabka would enjoy a bright moment in the Hollywood sun. That sunlight faded after a time, as new heroes rose — mutants and aliens boasting super-human powers — and now, as their sweet summer dims, Macchio and Zabka have been coaxed back into the open to revisit their beloved characters of  Daniel LaRusso and  Johnny Lawrence in YouTube Premium series Cobra Kai, now available on Netflix.Season 1 was a Certified Fresh hit. All 43 critics that reviewed the season gave it a Fresh rating, landing Cobra Kai — the unlikely streaming TV revival of a slumbering monster film franchise — in our prestigious 100% TV season club. The series also brought back other familiar faces from the original movie, including Martin Kove, who played the Cobra Kai dojo s original alpha-male sensei Kreese in the film, and heartwarming tributes to the humble handyman and teacher Miyagi, played by Morita, who died in 2005.With Season 1 and 2 now on Netflix, with a third Cobra Kai season set to premiere in 2021, we sat down with Macchio and Zabka to talk about what got them back to the dojo, and paying homage to Morita. What follows is a history of Cobra Kai (2018-) and reflection upon the series beginnings, drawn from a sit-down interview with Macchio and Zabka.ALSO WATCH: ORAL HISTORY OF THE KARATE KID WITH RALPH MACCHIO AND WILLIAM ZABKA“It became part of the American lexicon at some point.”Ralph Macchio: “I mean, certainly in the earlier years, from the ’80s into the early ’90s, you had all those images of the crane kick, or the lines like, ‘Get him a body bag’ or ‘Sweep the leg.’ ‘Wax on, wax off.’ [The Karate Kid] became part of the American lexicon at some point. But I think the internet, if you will, or the ability for everyone to be able to talk and spread their voice, really is where it amped up to that other level. And then you have the How I Met Your Mother of it all, which was a show that always teed up from Barney Stinson s perspective of the real Karate Kid. And then that became this whole pop culture thing, and then other videos made. And that set the stage for, I think, the series Cobra Kai fan base coming to the table all amped up for decades of discussion. And it s cool that it all collided in such a good big way.”“We have to go convince Ralph Macchio. William Zabka: “Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, the creators of Cobra Kai, emailed me and they said, ‘Let’s have lunch and talk to you about a project that we re excited about.’ So I said, ‘OK. Where do you want to meet? There s a Mexican restaurant down the street from my house. Let s meet there.’(Photo by YouTube Premium)So we go in and go and sit at this back table, and the chips come, and they re telling the waiters to leave, and then it was just spitfire, like the three-headed dragon, just a machine gun of information. Like, ‘OK, so here it is. We re huge fans of Karate Kid. We love your work. We want to do this. It s called Cobra Kai. We got the rights of Karate Kid. You re Johnny Lawrence. You re like bad sensei, you re like Walter Matthau in Bad News Bears. You re gonna be the anti-hero.’ And I was like, ‘What? You can t just go do this.’I ve had a lot of ideas presented. I ve thought my own self, like, ‘What can I do more in a satire type of way?’ Because I never could imagine getting the rights to do Johnny Lawrence again. And after The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith came out, I felt like it was really all over. Like, ‘It s moved on.’ … This, it just felt right. And I said, ‘What s the next step?’ They said, ‘Well, we have to go convince Ralph Macchio.’ I said, ‘OK.’”“Oh, crap, I hope this works.”Macchio: “They flew to New York. We met down in Tribeca area, and we spent more than a couple hours. They led off with talking about the themes. They were very focused. I could tell they were nervous, but Hayden, he started right away, and says, Bullying. I would love to have the footage of their pitch to Billy, to convince him, and their pitch to me, because they were different. They didn t start off saying, ‘We want to do the Johnny Lawrence story about Cobra Kai and make him the hero of the story.’ They started talking about themes, so credit them. They did a great job. They were also very well-versed in what they wanted to do, the angle. And they did tell me the title of the show. They weren t trying to say, ‘Oh, it s not gonna be that.’ I knew what it was.My biggest question was they were pitching it as a comedy. I said, ‘Well, where s the funny? What s the tone?’ That was the main question, and where s the Miyagi-isms, and how is that going to be woven into it? Because if it s not, then I m not interested. I need for it to have balance, if you will, across the board of the Karate Kid universe, even though the angle in from the Johnny Lawrence story is super smart.(Photo by YouTube Premium)I felt that they were the guys. I knew from Hot Tub Time Machine and Harold and Kumar that they knew [the humor]. I believed they could write for a young generation and humor and great teen dialogue, which I felt was really important for the show to have that. That s really shedding light in going to season 2 and beyond, because we have this great young cast. I needed to digest it all, but I believed that they were the guys. They wanted to make the show the fans wanted to see, because they were those kids. And then timing: 15 [or] 10 years ago there was no YouTube or Netflix, or a place where you could take a five, six-hour movie and cut it up into parts. We shoot this show and each season is like a full-on movie that you just cut up. You allow the characters to breathe and delve into gray areas, and it s not just so black-and-white and leading to one big quick climax two hours later. All those things together got me to the place of saying, ‘OK, let s do this.’ But not without me closing my eyes, holding my breath, and saying, ‘Oh, crap, I hope this works.’ Now we seem like the two smartest guys in the world.”“We hadn t done this for 35-some years  all of sudden, he walks in and it was just on.”Zabka: “My first scene was with Ed Asner, so how s that for day 1 on a show: working with a legend? It s the scene when I walk in and Ed Asner s in my refrigerator. So they just started me at full speed, and it was great, and he was great — I mean really great. What an honor. It felt like he kissed the show in a way, and he blessed it in a way, by his presence being there. It just felt like wow, we re way up here.”(Photo by YouTube Premium)Macchio: “Our first scene together is still one of my favorites in the Cobra Kai series. The first scene I shot was at the end of episode 2, where LaRusso comes into the Cobra Kai dojo and it s a little stare-down, and they question each other, and it just sets up the entire series. That scene was magic, man. We worked together in a film 30-plus years ago, and we ve been friends for years. But that level of chemistry that we have, I didn t know that it was there at the level that it s now turned out to be. It s just a reminder that this project, be it The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai, has some element that the bar just gets raised and we deliver. I m proud of it.”Zabka: “We hadn t done this for 35-some years now, right? And all of sudden, he walks in and it was just on, and everything else was gone, and it was these two characters exist again in this setting. We walked away. We re like, ‘Wow, there s something really happening.’”“It s warm and wonderful and bittersweet. Pat would ve loved this.”Macchio: “All the time, I think about Pat and his performance. Listen, we re not making the show without Pat Morita s performance as Mr. Miyagi, because that s one of the things that elevated that film to what it is today. They re big shoes to fill. I mean, LaRusso has a line like that early in season 2 — he looks at a picture of Miyagi and says, ‘Boy, I ve got big shoes to fill.’He learns very soon that just because you have knowledge of a subject doesn t necessarily mean you can teach it. And Mr. Miyagi was a magical type character who had a special touch, and LaRusso is learning that he might not have that — or he has to find his own. View this post on Instagram Shooting a poignant Miyagi-influenced scene on @cobrakaiseries then, moments later a surprise visit from Pat Morita’s daughter, Aly makes this one of the most memorable days on the show. All the feels from above and beyond. Another stroke of Miyagi Magic graces the day. Thanks, Aly 🙂 And as always, thank you, Pat. 🙏🥋A post shared by ralph_macchio (@ralph_macchio) on Oct 24, 2018 at 9:47am PDT

Rotten Tomatoes recently held its first Rotten Tomatoes Critics Workshop, designed to help freelance critics and journalists navigate festivals, develop industry contacts, and get their stories placed. We asked the industry professionals who spoke at our workshops to provide their top tips for freelancers; the below come from President of the African American Film Critics Association, Gil Robertson.Covering Sundance is an entertainment writer’s dream. As one of the industry’s most important festivals, it attracts the world’s biggest entertainers and decision makers. I’ve had the privilege of attending the festival for over a decade now as both a film critic and film advocate. Over the years, I have developed a few strategies that help me get the most out of each visit that I am now sharing with you. Check out some of my best practices below to help you get the most out of this incredible opportunity!1. PurposeSundance fosters a very “open” and inclusionary environment with films, installations and panel discussions that reflect the industry’s global diversity. New faces are plentiful and welcomed even, so make sure you have your game plan intact to meet your goals and get the most out of your experience. The festival is a tremendous opportunity to connect and network with those who can truly help grow your career and help you make a mark in this industry.2. PlanPlan: The best way to get what you need attending Sundance is to come pre-prepared. Study the program and be sure to sign up for all alerts. Send intro letters to PR professionals or points of contact for screenings and events that outline the coverage that you plan to provide. Also give yourself options with multiple events on your itinerary. Remember to be persistent, but not overbearing.3. WardrobeIt gets very cold in Park City, so dress warmly and layer well because you absolutely will spend a lot of time in long lines.4. PacingIt’s very easy to get overwhelmed by the glamour and fan fair at Sundance. There will be a lot of receptions, parties, premieres and even impromptu gatherings that will leave you exhausted and can throw you off track. Don’t lose your head! Enjoy everything, but remember to stay focused on your goals to manage your time wisely.5. ResponsibilityGetting Sundance media credentials is a huge opportunity and privilege and you should treat it as such. Make sure to show up to screenings and press opportunities on time. It’s also very important to file your reviews and articles covering the festival promptly so that they have the greatest impact. Doing this will ensure that you get invited back and will also provide you with entry to be invited to other film festivals.Gil Robertson is a journalist, author, and producer. We re breaking down the competition by Tomatometer, box office receipts, the enemies they ve faced, and letting them duke it out in one special wild card round. Thumbnail: A24 / Courtesy Everett Collection; Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection.)The Best Asian-American Movies of All TimeBetween Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, and Always Be My Maybe in recent years, there s been a surge in Asian-American representation on screens of all sizes. These films are milestones in what has been a long, continuous journey to be seen and heard in theaters and at home, and we celebrate those contemporary hits and everything else that has come before them with the 65 Best Asian-American Movies. To be Asian-American means a personal identity spread across a coalition of different countries. Under this umbrella is a wide range of Pacific Ocean cultures and histories, countries whose people have also found a new life in the United States. The movies in our guide reflect their experiences, from Korean (Columbus, Minari), Chinese (Saving Face), Singaporean (Shirkers), Japanese (To Be Takei), Filipino (The Debut), Vietnamese (Green Dragon), and more. South Asian-American films included are The Big Sick, The Namesake, and Meet the Patels. We selected movies where the Asian-American experience drives character and story, or had a significant impact on Asian-American audiences due to its casting, the filmmakers behind it, and for breaking representational ground (Searching, To All The Boys I ve Loved Before). The Asian-American experience is sometimes about traveling to a foreign home country, explored in movies like Always Tomorrow in Hong Kong, Go Back to China, and Cavite. And sometimes the experience is about coming to America and becoming citizens, as in Journey From the Fall or Tigertail. These stories start overseas, but are also set and shot in America, so we included those. The historical landmark films are here, including Chan Is Missing, The Joy Luck Club, and Better Luck Tomorrow. All except for Flower Drum Song: This 1961 musical was the first major Hollywood production to have an Asian-American cast, but it s also Rotten on the Tomatometer. We included only Fresh movies, with at least 10 reviews, before ranking them using our ranking formula, takes into factor the movie s year of release and its number of reviews. With all that said, we present the Best Asian-American Movies of all time!
Production has wrapped on Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of The Witcher, and star Henry Cavill celebrated with a lengthy Instagram post about his experience filming the series. The takeaway: “All of those 3 am wake ups were worth it,” he writes. The Good Fight to Air on CBS(Photo by Patrick Harbron/CBS)The Good Fight is getting its on-air debut: CBS announced that the CBS All Access legal drama, a spinoff of its critically acclaimed legal drama The Good Wife, will be broadcast on CBS this summer. It’ll be the first series from CBS’ streaming service, which is also home to Star Trek: Discovery and the Twilight Zone reboot, to air on the network. While there are three seasons available on CBS All Access, CBS will air season 1 of The Good Fight. For three seasons, The Good Fight has been a big success for CBS All Access,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a press release announcing the news. “We’re excited to provide our network audience the opportunity to catch up with characters they first fell in love with on The Good Wife, as well as introduce new viewers to this outstanding, critically acclaimed drama.”Alex Trebek’s Cancer Is Almost in Remission(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Q: What is good news? A: Alex Trebek’s latest announcement that his cancer is on its way out. The Jeopardy! host told People that although he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer three months ago, he’s in “near remission” and “some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”No, Really, What Just Happened??!(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Fox’s upcoming experimental comedy What Just Happened??! — a faux-aftershow about a fictional series, hosted by Fred Savage (playing himself), has added a few more head-scratching details. Joining Savage as “host” will be comedian Taylor Tomlinson, and the two will be joined by Best Coast as the house band. The series is dedicated to exploring the fandom surrounding The Flare, a fictional drama based on a fictional sci-fi book series by fictional author TJ Whitford, “The Moon is the Sun at Night,” which, according to the press release announcing the very meta news, “has been a favorite of Fred Savage’s since childhood. The book revolves around a solar event and its effects on Earth – specifically, the small, blue-collar town of Milford, IL – and slowly unfolds into a post-apocalyptic battle for human survival.” What Just Happened??! will feature “multiple segments, including authentic sit-down celebrity interviews, set visits to The Flare and interviews with the ‘cast,’ as well as discussions with fans and more.” It premieres Sunday, June 30 on Fox.According to Entertainment Weekly, The Flare’s cast includes Shiri Appleby, Guillermo Diaz, Kevin Zegers, Duane Reed, Sola Bamis, Tyler Ritter, Sprague Grayden, and Amy Acker.Casting News: Creepshow, The Right Stuff, and MoreThe Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot BH90210, a mockumentary-style series featuring the main cast members attempting to launch a revival of their beloved teen soap, has cast La La Anthony and Vanessa Lachey to play the wives of Brian Austin Green and Jason Priestley, respectively. Anthony is music superstar Shay, and Lachey is high-powered publicist Camille. (No word on whether Green’s real-life wife, Megan Fox, will appear in the series.)National Geographic’s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff has tapped former Suits star Patrick J. Adams to play Maj. John Glenn in the series adaptation of the bestseller. “The series takes a clear-eyed look at what would become America’s first ‘reality show,’ as ambitious astronauts and their families become instant celebrities in a competition that will either kill them or make them immortal in the quest to be a part of Project Mercury,” according to the official description. Production will begin in Florida in the fall and the series is set to premiere on National Geographic in 2020.Variety reports that The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes and The Path’s Stephanie Hsu will appear in season 3 of Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay will star in USA Network’s adaptation of Brave New World alongside Alden Ehrenreich and Harry Lloyd. But after a trip to the Savage Lands, they become embroiled in a rebellion and begin to question the lives they’ve known.Streaming service Shudder s upcoming series adaptation of Creepshow has cast David Arquette, Tricia Helfer, and Dana Gould in three different installments of the horror series. Arquette will star in Times is Tough in Musky Holler, about  leaders who once controlled a town through fear and intimidation get[ting] a taste of their own medicine Helfer will star in Lydia Layne’s Better Half, in which a powerful woman denies a promotion to her protégée and lover but fails to anticipate the fallout and Gould is in Skincrawlers, featuring a man who considers a miraculous new treatment for weight loss that turns out to have unexpected complications. Ghcxuf (Photo by Jay Maidment/Walt Disney Studios)All Chris Hemsworth Movies RankedOut of all the Avengers stars, Chris Hemsworth had the easiest time selling his character to the world. Not just because he looks like a Norse god when you give him a hammer and a funny hat, but because audiences had virtually seen no other prior Hemsworth performances to influence their perception of him. Before arriving on American shores, Hemsworth shot 171 episodes of long-running Australian soap Home and Away (approximately 2.5% of total episodes to date). He made a notable corpse in the Star Trek reboot as George Kirk in the opening scene. And that about sums up Hemsworth s pre-Thor career.Since his 2011 MCU debut, Hemsworth has shown a loyalty not just to franchises (he s been in both Huntsman movies, and came back for Star Trek Into Darkness) but directors, like Ron Howard (Rush, In the Heart of the Sea) and Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Bad Time as the El Royale). It suggests Hemsworth is an affable sort, a quality that helped him steer Thor through two decent-to-average movies before blossoming in the renegade Thor: Ragnarok, and becoming the true hero of Avengers: Infinity War.Most recently, he had one of the first post-quarantine movie hits with Netflix s Extraction, a rough action throwback produced by the Russo brothers. And he ll be back in the MCU for 2022 s Thor: Love Thunder. And now, we re taking a look back on every Chris Hemsworth movie ranked by Tomatometer! 😈😈
