This week s biggest TV news includes a Twilight Zone trailer, Walking Dead ratings, updates on the assault case involving Empire star Jussie Smollett, and more.TOP STORYJussie Smollett s Empire Future in Doubt; Police Claim Actor Staged Attack Due to Salary(Photo by Chuck Hodes/FOX)20th Century Fox has been forced to reassess after the arrest of Empire star Jussie Smollett. On January 29, reports emerged that Smollett, who plays golden-voiced Jamal Lyon on the drama series, had been hospitalized after a seemingly racist and homophobic assault. Less than a month later, Smollett turned himself in to Chicago police after being charged with a felony for filing a false report for the incident, which police now allege the actor planned himself because he was “dissatisfied with his salary.”The actor earns ,000 per episode, according to The Huffington Post. By comparison, the higher end of the TV star salary spectrum includes the cast of CBS’ juggernaut sitcom The Big Bang Theory, who each earn around million per episode. Rachel Brosnahan, award-winning star of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, recently renegotiated her contract to earn around 0,000 an episode beginning with the comedy’s third season. The lower end of TV contracts will see supporting leads with no other major credits make around ,000 an episode, according to a 2017 report. While Fox initially made multiple statements in support of Smollett and reiterating that he was not being written off the series, it has changed course following the actor’s arrest.“We understand the seriousness of this matter and we respect the legal process,” a statement provided to the Huffington Post said. “We are evaluating the situation and we are considering our options.”Here s a timeline of how the investigation of the incident evolved:Tuesday, Jan. 29: Reports emerged that Smollett had been the victim of a hate crime in the early morning hours in which two men in masks poured bleach on him, tied a noose around his neck, and shouted that he was in “MAGA country.”Wednesday, Jan. 30: Police were seeking two persons of interest in the alleged assault and battery of the actor. Additionally, Smollett’s music manager Brandon Z. Moore said he was on the phone with his client during the incident and overheard part of the attack.Thursday, Jan. 31: Chicago police said that Smollett refused to turn his cell phone over to detectives and declined to provide phone records for the investigation.Friday, Feb. 1: Smollett released a statement thanking his fans for their “outpouring of love and support” in the wake of the incident.Saturday, Feb. 2: Smollett performed a sold-out show at Los Angeles’ Troubadour nightclub, during which he told fans he fought back against his attackers, and that “I’m gonna stand strong with y’all. I had to be here tonight. I couldn’t let those [attackers] win. I will always stand for love.”Thursday, Feb. 14: Chicago police arrest the two persons of interest in the case, and also say local media reports that the attack was a hoax are unconfirmed. Earlier that morning, Smollett gave his first media interview following the incident on Good Morning America, where he told Robin Roberts he was “pissed off.”Friday, Feb. 15: The two suspects were released without charges after being held and questioned for 48 hours.Saturday, Feb. 16: Police said the investigation had “shifted,” and a police source said that the two men told police that Smollett paid them to help orchestrate the attack. Smollett denied the new information.Wednesday, Feb. 20: Surveillance video appeared that reportedly showed the brothers linked to the attack purchasing the items used in the alleged assault. Smollett was officially charged with making a false police report. The felony disorderly conduct charge could come with up to three years of prison time.Thursday, Feb. 21: Smollett turned himself in to police and was released on 0,000 bond. A bond proffer (read the full document) filed by prosecutors during the actor s bond hearing revealed that Smollett paid the brothers ,500 with a backdated personal check.First Trailer for Jordan Peele s Twilight Zone Remake ReleasedStreaming service CBS All Access has finally released a full — albeit incredibly mysterious — trailer for Jordan Peele’s reimagining of the classic sci-fi series The Twilight Zone, which debuts on April 1. While it only revealed a few clues about some of the episodes’ storylines (including that Adam Scott’s character will have significant experiences with the number 1015, Sanaa Lathan’s character is dealing with something that goes “backwards,” and Kumail Nanjiani’s character accidentally changes or erases something in his life), it did show the first footage of many of the series’ biggest guest stars (including Tracy Morgan, Greg Kinnear, John Cho, Steven Yeun, Allison Tolman, and more).Yes, the iconic score is included too.The Walking Dead Hits a Ratings LowThe Walking Dead is still one of the biggest shows on television, but the series hit its all-time ratings low with season 9 s 10th episode on Sunday, February 17. The episode, Omega, earned just 4.54 million viewers and a 1.7 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, its lowest-ever outing. The episode also ended up with a season-low 76% Tomatometer score, based on critics reviews. As a means of establishing the character of Alpha, the harsh and violent new antagonist and leader of the Whisperers, Omega is bluntly effective. As an episode of The Walking Dead, it s pretty thin gruel,  Alex McLevy wrote for AV Club.Don’t worry too much, though — it’s still the top-rated non-sports cable show on television.Casting Update: New SNL Hosts, Gotham Alum’s New Role, Lost Boys TV series, and MoreComing to #SNL in March! ☘️ @mulaney ☘️ @ThomasRhett☘️ @idriselba☘️ @thegreatkhalid pic.twitter.com/TMQJ8aKhNw Saturday Night Live SNL (@nbcsnl) February 20, 2019Saturday Night Live will welcome People magazine’s reigning Sexiest Man Alive on March 9 when Idris Elba hosts the sketch comedy series for the first time. The week before, March 2, former SNL writer John Mulaney will host. Mulaney’s musical guest will be country star Thomas Rhett, while Elba’s will be singer Khalid.Gotham star Robin Lord Taylor, a.k.a. Cobblepot/Penguin, is joining season 2 of Lifetime-turned-Netflix drama You. According to Deadline, he’ll play Will, a “thoughtful, personable, and highly intelligent guy who marches to the beat of his drummer” and occasionally “deals with unsavory sorts as part of his job,” and who “gets trapped in a bad situation.”The CW is remaking ’80s vampire classic The Lost Boys as a TV series, and has cast former Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey in the pilot, which will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke. According to Entertainment Weekly, he’ll play Michael, one of two brothers who moves to the town of Santa Carla, California, after the sudden death of his father. Per EW, Michael is the “elder brother, whose life plans are uprooted when he learns he has the same genetic weakness that killed his dad.”Other casting news includes Sophia Bush in a mysterious role on Jane the Virgin’s final season, Rachael Leigh Cook as Reid’s new love interest in the final season of Criminal Minds, Alicia Witt in the final season of Orange Is the New Black, and Ryan Devlin’s return to Veronica Mars in Hulu’s upcoming new season of the series.Upcoming Reboots and RevivalsPsych is coming back — again. The cult-favorite USA series, which ran from 2006-2014, returned in late 2017 with a feature-length installment. The network announced last week that another film featuring the series original stars will air before the end of 2019.Nickelodeon is rebooting its 1990s sketch comedy series All That, which will be executive produced by original star Kenan Thompson, who has gone on to become SNL s longest-tenured cast member ever. Netflix has announced a sequel to its viral hit rom-com The Kissing Booth, with original stars Joey King and Jacob Elordi returning.Deals, Deals, DealsNetflix has signed The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan and partner Trevor Macy to a deal that will see the pair develop and produce new series for the streaming service. The deal also includes an anthological-style second season of their hit horror series, which will be called The Haunting of Bly Manor and, according to THR, will be inspired by Henry James’ short story The Turn of the Screw.Neil Gaiman is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company for a reimagined version of 1987 series The Storyteller. The new version will “create a mystical world combining various fairy tales and folklore” for what Gaiman calls “the binging kind” of modern TV viewer. Gaiman, who will write and executive produce, said in a statement, “Part of what fascinates me about The Storyteller is the stuff that we don’t know,” he said. “Who was the Storyteller, why was he telling these stories, was he a goblin, what kind of creature? What I’d love to do is an inside story that’s as long as the outside story. We’re going to find out a lot about who the storyteller is, we’re going to find out things we don’t even know that we don’t know. We’re going to begin in a Northern kingdom where stories are forbidden and where the act of telling a story is liable and can get you imprisoned or executed. If you put a storyteller into that situation, things would need to start getting interactive.”Oscar-winning production company Fabula (behind Jackie, Neruda, No, The Club, and more) has teamed up with global producer and distributor Fremantle (American Gods, My Brilliant Friend, The Young Pope) for a deal that includes their current collaboration, the eight-part Spanish-language series La Jauria. Director James Gray s previous work includes films like The Immigrant and The Lost City of Z, so he may not be the first person who comes to mind when you think epic space drama. That said, Gray s quieter sensibilities may have worked to his benefit in his latest project, Ad Astra. Brad Pitt stars in the sci-fi mystery as an astronaut who embarks on a dangerous journey into space both to investigate an interstellar threat to Earth and to locate his missing father (Tommy Lee Jones), who undertook a similar mission decades earlier and disappeared. Critics say the film is an ambitious, beautifully photographed space adventure that balances big questions alongside more perso

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
HBO released the first full-length trailer for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones on Tuesday. We ve learned a lot about the new season so far (read more here), but, in what s become something of a tradition for us, we re going to look now at every shot in the trailer to see what details we can pick up.Which moment made you squeal with joy? Or, do you think we missed something or got something wrong? Tell us about it in the comments!Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.1. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) panting and covered in — blood? Wight guts? She s hiding and obviously afraid. If Arya s scared, you know we ll be clutching the sofa pillows when this moment rolls around.2. Arya runs. What could be chasing Arya through a castle? Is it Winterfell? Surely. She wouldn t have left the remainder of the Stark clan for any reason. Probably. In a lightened version of this video on Reddit, you can definitely see a pale figure lumbering wight-like after her in the darkened shadow.3. Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) looks grim on the ramparts of, this one presumes, Winterfell. This appears to be the only glimpse of Ser Davos in the trailer. Arya in voiceover says, I know death. Was that what she was running from?4. More Arya running.5. A back view of Arya running. (We warned you: shot-by-shot.) We lightened the image as much as possible, but this tells us nothing more; that said, the urgency of the music and the desperation of the character in these moments is a hugely effective tease.6. Varys (Conleth Hill) hiding with women and children in the Winterfell crypt. How do we know it is the Winterfell crypt? This image shows a stone effigy of a man with a sword and a direwolf — we guessed that it was Robb Stark, who was murdered at the Red Wedding. The last we saw of his corporeal self, he was being paraded in front of the Twins with the head of his direwolf, Grey Wind, replacing his own. Reader Rit Umm says in the comments below that it s the statue of Rickard Stark, Ned s father who was burned by the Mad King, and that the statue was seen in season 1 — looking back at the premiere, you can see the statue Rit means in the crypt scene between Robert Baratheon and Ned when they go to visit Lyanna s tomb. Arya in voiceover says, He s got many faces. Why we get a close-up of Varys while she says that is ominous, but seemingly insignificant other than the fear Varys apparently has in this moment. A coworker later points out Gilly and Little Sam over there under Robb. (Thanks, CK!)7. So in these shots of Arya running, we keep looking behind her (in the original version) to see what she s running from, but we see nothing so far: windows, wall sconces burning, here a spot of light, but it looks like just another window. The running is effective, however; the pit in this one s stomach grows with every cut to Arya panting. In the lightened video, however, you can see at least two figures chasing her.8. Arya says, I look forward to seeing this one. The face of the Night King, she must mean. She holds up a spear. Is it dragonglass? We lightened up the image to see more clearly and it seems to have the notches of roughly hewn glass. The question that arises is: Who could she be speaking to? If she s got a dragonglass spear and is being somewhat honest about who she has become, it may be her half-brother Jon Snow (but really cousin Aegon Targaryen).9. April 14! Yaaaassss!10. No shot yet has captured the often-promised cinematic quality of the season quite like this one of Euron s Theon s ships. (Eagle-eyed readers noted the differences in the Greyjoy sigil between this shot and the next — thank you!)11. Cersei revealed to Jaime in the season 7 finale that Euron had not actually abandoned their cause. The king of the Iron Islands had actually staged his theatrical departure to hide his true intent: to cross the Narrow Sea to Essos and pick up the Golden Company to fight her cause against the North and Daenerys. This is our first look at the sell-swords. They are sailing for Westeros, but who is that at their head? New character alert! Back in October 2017, WatchersontheWall.com noted the casting of German actor Marc Rissmann in the role of Harry Strickland, the leader of the Golden Company according to George R.R. Martin s A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels upon which the show is based. (Rissman s agency now lists various, however, rather than the character name on Rissmann s credits.) So the not Jaime guy on the boat is likely new guy Harry. (Can you see Euron in this image? Reader PegasaurusRex notes in the comments below that you can. We looked at the moment in full screen and frame-by-frame, and while there s someone who looks like Euron helping to move cargo/supplies in the lower left of the frame, the face is still a bit fuzzy and this one feels like Euron wouldn t be doing that. What do you think?)12. Bran speaks in voiceover as the image of the Golden Company dissolves to black: Everything you did brought you where you are now Acting Lord Commander of the Night s Watch Edd Tollett, Brienne s boyfriend Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion and his flaming sword emerge. Here we cheer, because this is first confirmation that Tormund and Beric survived the fall of the Wall. We knew they would, but we feel a sense of relief nonetheless. Now, where are they? Best guess is perhaps one of the abandoned castles along the Wall. Edd had been at Castle Black, so Beric and Tormund could have run to Castle Black to sound the alarm that walking dead have breached the Wall and are headed south. But those surroundings don t look like Castle Black, the buildings of which tend to be low with squat doorways. In the books, there are 19 castles, the oldest and largest of which is abandoned castle Nightfort, which includes the Black Gate, a secret way through the Wall sealed by a magical weirwood door that only opens to a sworn brother of the Night s Watch. (Read more at A Wiki of Ice and Fire.) But if they re trying to cross through the Black Gate, they re going the wrong way. In any case 13. Three-Eyed Raven/Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) and Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) appear to be exactly where we left them in the season 7 finale: having a chat. What is very notable, however, is Sam s frosty breath when he exhales.14. The Red Keep at King s Landing has never looked quite so red as now. Bran continues, where you belong 15. Cut to: The Mountain, Cersei, and Qyburn (Anton Lesser). Cersei looks like she s got mischief on her mind, and, for once, Qyburn looks a little concerned about that.16. The residents of Winter Town line the road to watch the Unsullied march toward the castle. Bran says, home. 17. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) ride behind the Unsullied toward Winterfell.18. Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) sees live dragons for the first time. She may have seen the skulls of dragons while at King s Landing, though it s doubtful prissy young Lady Sansa would have braved the Red Keep s musty cellars (as Arya did) to see bones.19. Drogon and Rhaegal fly over Winterfell, preparing to meet up with their wight-dragon brother, Viserion. Jon in voiceover says, They re coming. 20a. Whoops, missed a shot! (So embarrassing.) Danaerys approaches Jon in the Winterfell crypt. Now that we know where they are 20b. Daenerys and Jon share a moment in the Winterfell crypt. He s probably gotten the news that she s his aunt, and she s probably about to tell him that Targaryens have married Targaryens for generations, and he s likely to note that her dad was batsh crazy. Jon in voiceover says, Our enemy doesn t tire 21. This looks like the work of a master smith. And piles and piles of dragonglass (the lightened video shows). Guy walking in the back? That s 22. Gendry! One of our staff members said, so gendry kinda neville longbottomed, and we all laughed heartily – at least, we traded a flurry of cackling emojis in a group chat. (Yes, we re nerds.) Jon s voiceover continues, doesn t stop 23. And there s Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen). We knew that it was cold while filming season 8, but look at that horse breath! Reader xifar250 notes the Dothraki in this scene. You can see them clearly in the lightened version of this video. In a Winteriscoming.net post, David Harris notes that Jorah is carrying Heartsbane! That s the Tarly family Valyrian steel sword — Sam s inheritance that he took (a bit prematurely) from his father when he, Gilly, and Little Sam left for the Citadel in Oldtown. As Harris says, it makes sense that Sam would gift/loan the weapon to such a talented swordsman, who will make much better use of it.24. Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) ride in. Grey Worm breath! Jon s voiceover comes in: doesn t feel 25. Speaking of feel, rrrrawr.26. In another not Jaime moment, who is this Winterfell warrior? One particularly insistent social team member says it s Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), so we ll go with that. Assuming that it is Winterfell 27. Here s Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), surrounded by fire and smoke and obviously in distress. Again, it s difficult to say for certain in these quick glimpses where the moment is taking place, but we can be certain that Jaime is in the fight. He yells something. This one heard Pod. The insistent social team member says that s not what he said. (Tell us in the comments what you think he yells.) OK then, moving on 28. Fire pillars are a hot design addition to the Iron Throne room. It makes sense that we hadn t previously seen this particular feature before, but that we would now that winter has come. Zooming in on Cersei and her posse — the Mountain on the left and Qyburn on the right — it looks like it could be the Golden Company leader Harry Strickland there in front of her, but who s that robed figure off to the right side of him? Tycho Nestoris (Mark Gatiss) repping the Iron Bank of Braavos perhaps? Reader xifar250 says in the comments that the figure is Euron, which would also make sense. An ankle-skimming coat would make sense for the weather.29. Cersei s eyes water as she drinks a glass of wine. Probably just heard that Jaime left for good. Girl, wine is fine, but liquor s quicker. (This one was kind of a joke, but, in the comments below, one reader makes a very compelling argument that the wine consumption is evidence of a miscarriage. Thank you for the insight, David M Martin!)30. Drogon and Rhaegal fly over the frozen North. We re beginning to think they re having a good time.31. Where s this? Are they visiting the Eyrie now? A grand tour of Westeros dragon style? (We think we ve found a new VR experience that needs to exist.)32. So this moment is less about Arya standing awestruck and staring at the skies, as it is about the people around her panicking and staring at the skies. Our bet is that they ve all just seen dragons for the first time. Jaime s voice comes in over the moment: I promised to 33. Grey Worm and the Unsullied saddle up. Jaime continues, fight for the living 34. Jon Snow in front of the Stark family s weirwood tree in the Godswood of Winterfell. Unmistakable.35. The Hound (Rory McCann). Probably prepping for Cleganebowl! Jaime continues, and I 36. Jaime speaks: intend to keep that promise. 37. We learned from the last time we did this shot-by-shot trailer exercise not to guess what vague weapons in hands were or meant or else this just turns into 20 minutes of guess the cuff and we d still be wrong.38. Now Jon is running. All of these scenes are so dark. It s no wonder that the dragon s look like they re having a good time — they re the only ones who see sunlight in this trailer.39. And the soldiers are running. (This moment looks suspiciously like a retreat.)40. And the horses are running. This one notes a pattern 41. The Targaryens approach Drogon and Rhaegal (who ve apparently recently eaten). Jon s going to be a dragon rider!42. So Wiki of Ice and Fire notes that some in the histories have said that Drogon is Balerion the Black Dread reincarnated. Don t know about that, but look how massive that dragon is now! Rhaegal looks like a Schnauzer next to him.43. Finally, more Sansa. She s not really doing anything and not wearing anything particularly notable. Moving on 44. This is a difficult moment to get a clear shot of. It s clearly Arya, and she s twirling a staff or a spear. We re going to go with spear since the dragonglass arrowhead will be important in this fight.45. Another angle on Arya in the fight. She serves a nice uppercut in this moment. (Yes, those shadows appear to be figures — wights most likely — pulling themselves over the wall.)46. Daenerys looks like she s got morning sickness. That would be really quick work by Jon. (It could also be a severe sense of dread, Jon has told her that he won t continue in an incestuous relationship, or she s been informed that she s technically not next in line for the Iron Throne.)47.  Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) finally. It took 47 shots to get here, and he looks very much the same as last season: gazing longingly into the skies. He must be looking at dragons because there s sunlight in this scene. We re heartened to see that he still has his Hand of the Queen pin on.48. In your face! There s no fire like dragonfire!49. The Unsullied hold in formation. In the lightened version of the video, you can clearly see trebuchets in the background.50. Looks like Brienne and Podrick head up the Northern coalition. Lightening the image later revealed that these are the Knights of the Vale behind Brienne and Pod — warriors of the East! And we can t help but think of the immortal words of Oda Mae Brown, Brienne, you in danger, girl. 51. Jorah Mormont again. Hopefully, he s ordered little she-bear Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) back to Bear Island to live a long, happy life away from the wights who can t swim. She probably won t go, but this one likes to think he d insist.52. Nice editing. This is, hooves down, the scariest moment in the trailer. The Night King A White Walker/someone has arrived on a wight steed. Gah! (Jackytreehornn makes the astute observation in our comments that the Night King is likely still riding Viserion. Of course! Thank you, jackytreehornn!)53. And this is the saddest. What We Didn t SeeAlmost as important as what is in front of our faces is what is absent. If we missed any of the following in the trailer, we re confident you ll tell us in the comments:The Dothraki — did they all stay behind to guard Dragonstone?Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) — we see the ship, but not their captain (see notes on shots No. 11 and 28)Despite the likelihood that No. 10 is of the Greyjoy siblings  ships, we don t actually see Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), who is off looking for his sister Yara (Gemma Whelan), imprisoned by EuronGilly (Hannah Murray) (See note in No. 6 above.)Archmaester Ebrose (Jim Broadbent) and the CitadelEllaria Sand (Indira Varma) and her rotting daughter, Tyene (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers)Edmure Tully (Tobias Menzies) — the man is either head of the Frey clan now or a bed slave to all of the Frey women Arya left aliveDaario Naharis (Michiel Huisman)Jaqen H ghar (Tom Wlaschiha)Meera Reed (Ellie Kendric

8.20.5 5月喜迎t this November, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic until next year on April 15, 2022. The movie is less than a year away from release, but it was only this week that we found out the voice cast will include Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos (In the Heights), Sam Rockwell, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson. In related news, Searchlight Pictures announced this week that their previously-untitled murder mystery starring Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan will be called See How They Run, and it will be release sometime in 2022.7. MYSTERIOUS PREDATOR PREQUEL SKULL COMPARED TO SURVIVAL THRILLER THE REVENANT(Photo by Fox/Everett Collection)10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is currently about 75% finished filming his next project, which was confirmed this week to be titled Skull. What that title doesn t tell you is that the film is actually a prequel to a fan favorite sci-fi action franchise: It will tell the story of the the alien hunters from the Predator series in a survival thriller set some time in the past that s being compared to the The Revenant. The only known Skull cast member right now is Amber Midthunder (Legion, The Ice Road), who was reportedly cast as a Comanche warrior woman who is forced to fight a Predator.8. THE CHI STAR JOINS HOUSE PARTY REMAKE AFTER CAST SHAKEUP (Photo by Showtime)Hollywood s remake fever has nearly run out of ideal properties from the 1980s, so the trend is starting to move more and more towards revisiting the 1990s (and by the end of the 2020s, we ll probably start seeing lots of remakes from the 2000s). After several years of development, New Line Cinema is ready to start filming their remake of the 1990 Kid n Play comedy hit House Party. Tosin Cole (Ryan Sinclair from Doctor Who) and Jorge Lendeborg Jr (Bumblebee) had been cast in April, but Lendeborg reportedly recently dropped out to focus on his mental well-being. His role will instead go to Jacob Latimore of the Showtime series The Chi. The original House Party was an ensemble comedy, so this remake probably will be as well, but none of those roles have been announced yet.9. SCARLETT JOHANSSON SUES DISNEY OVER BLACK WIDOW STREAMING STRATEGY(Photo by Marvel Studios)Walt Disney Pictures received criticism for their decision to stream Black Widow day-and-date with the theatrical release, which has resulted in s its international box office looking like it will to end up about where Scarlett Johansson s Lucy (3 million) did far below most MCU films. Johansson took on the issue directly this week by filing a lawsuit against Disney, accusing the studio over a breach of contract. Key to Johansson s suit is that her contract was based on bonuses from the box office performance of Black Widow, which the lawsuit alleges were significantly reduced because of the decision to stream Black Widow on Disney+.  Disney responded by calling the lawsuit sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johansson s agent replied to that as being a direct attack on her character. More reactions can be read here. What is unclear is how this lawsuit will impact  Johansson s future dealings with both Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures, where for example, she had just recently developing a movie project based on the Walt Disney Theme Parks attraction Tower of Terror. On an Apple device? Chuck Jones had already achieved the impossible with 1966 s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, turning Dr. Seuss’ popular short book into 24 minutes of stunning animation and beautifully transferring its heartwarming charm to the small screen. Boasting voice work led by the legendary Boris Karloff and an iconic song to match in “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” the beloved TV special seemed poised to stand the test of time. Alas, what is dead may never die, and in 1998 a new feature film adaptation directed by Ron Howard and starring Jim Carrey as the iconic Christmas grump was announced, ensuring a very different Grinch would lodge itself in the memories of a younger generation.Like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and James Cameron, actor-turned-director Howard began his career behind the camera under the tutelage of Roger Corman. But soon enough, Howard s earnest, old-fashioned, unobtrusive filmmaking became his calling card, with movies like Cocoon, Willow, and Splash. His talent for world-building and his ability to make audiences fall for his characters turned him into a powerhouse director and producer across multiple genres, and both skills would prove invaluable in his adaptation of the Dr. Seuss tale.Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas divided critics upon its release 20 years ago today, but it went on to become the sixth highest-grossing film of 2000. Audiences were met with a frenetic, bombastic version of a story they were already acquainted with, and, well, if they were expecting something akin to what Howard pulled off with Tom Hanks in Apollo 13, they were sure to be disappointed and possibly confused. But taken on its own merits, the film is a worthy expansion of the source material that features great performances and tackles still-relevant themes. How the Grinch Stole Christmas deserves to be recognized as one of the best modern Christmas movies and one of Ron Howard s most overlooked films. It Gave the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who Important BackstoriesIn what is perhaps the biggest departure from the original story, Ron Howard’s Grinch makes the Whos the antagonists and shows how their unchecked vanity created their biggest “monster.” In this version, it is Cindy Lou Who’s (Taylor Momsen) kindness and empathy that not only turns the Grinch into a mensch, but also turns the entire town of Whoville away from their obsessively capitalistic ideals. The Grinch’s new backstory as a kid who was bullied out of Whoville gives us a reason to root for him and helps establish that maybe the Whos do deserve his Yuletide scorn after all. Cindy Lou learns through some spiffy documentarian investigating that the Grinch was ostracized for looking different and thinking differently (and for being in love with the Who that grew up to be Christine Baranski). As a result, he became cynical and resentful, locking himself away from a world that rejected him.The film is a little clumsy in its attempt to be a story about “the other” – a shame, since there is something to the idea of how capitalistic societies tend to ignore and cast out their most vulnerable – but it’s executed well enough to be effective. Howard’s interpretation turned the Grinch into someone we could care about, a tragic victim of the Whos selfish and obsessive natures, which makes for a more interesting take on the classic tale.It s a Clear Critique of Hyper-Consumerist CultureWhen Dr. Seuss wrote the original story in 1957, he was expressing his disdain for the consumer-focused direction Christmas seemed to have taken at the time; Howard clearly wanted to show that things hadn t changed all that much since then. The 90s were a time of angst and excess; with this adaptation, Howard created something that was more familiar in theory to the wasteful world audiences were living in at the turn of the millennium. There are even jokes about how the Grinch collects most of the gifts the Whos toss out after Christmas every year.Speaking of which, we see the townsfolk fret and obsess obnoxiously over everything Christmas-related, from mailing gifts on time to competing for Best Christmas Light Display (shout-out to Molly Shannon in her small role here as Betty Lou Who, A+ suburban mom). After the Grinch’s mischievous Jubilation rampage, we even see a Who offering to sell another clearly distressed man a hat rather than attempt to help him. Their mayor, Augustus Maywho (Jeffrey Tambor), is even more useless; he sets the example with zero compassion for his citizens in a time of need. It’s no wonder Cindy Lou is concerned that her fellow Whos might have lost sight of what Christmas is really about. The Whos aren t just antagonistic; their unsatisfied thirst for material possessions makes them blind to their own faults.Aesthetically, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is Baz Luhrmann-meets-Joel Schumacher, and it’s both wonderfully bonkers and thematically appropriate. Ron Howard and production designer Michael Corenblith crafted a world that felt lived in despite its over-the-top features and made it easy to escape into in a way remarkably reminiscent of what Howard did in Willow. It s a significant departure from holiday films of the time, which were almost too-wholesome, too-perfect depictions of the holidays. No shade on Home Alone, but the chaotic energy that this new Grinch brought to the holiday scene was bold and attuned with the excess that accompanies consumeristic greed.Jim Carrey and Taylor Momsen Are Perfectly Cast Against Each Other(Photo by ©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Speaking of chaotic energy, it was an inspired choice to cast Jim Carrey. This Grinch has curious interior design instincts, an appetite for glass, and a penchant for the absurdly gross. Carrey seamlessly steps into the role and fully owns its hysteria. When the Grinch grapples with whether he has time in his oh-so-busy schedule to step outside the safety of his home, let alone decide what to wear if he chose to attend the Whos’ Jubilation ceremony, it’s a relatable and hilarious moment that only works thanks to Carrey’s gloriously manic performance. But Carrey gets to show a smidge of his dramatic acting chops here, too, in one of the film’s most heartbreaking scenes. When we return from the flashback to the Grinch’s childhood, the grown-up Grinch gazes down at Whoville, clearly hurting from the trauma of his past. The scene lasts only a brief moment, but it s effective enough to secure our empathy (even if Roger Ebert vehemently disagreed). The dawn of the new millennium was a post-angst, post-meta time, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas features an unusual amount of existentialism that makes it highly relatable to millennials. Who didn’t shed a tear at Cindy Lou Who’s power ballad Where Are You Christmas? Written by Mariah Carey (yes, that Mariah Carey), the film’s composer James Horner, and Will Jennings, the song is performed by Taylor Momsen in a scene that’s a little high on the cheese factor, but is really effective in expressing Cindy Lou’s sorrow over the seeming death of the true Christmas spirit. (All while wistfully looking out her bedroom window, no less.)Beyond that, Momsen’s Cindy Lou is a spunky and unlikely Christmas crusader, and she s a perfect foil to Jim Carrey’s intense energy. There is a warmth to her performance that is as comforting as hot chocolate on a cold winter day, and it’s palpable the moment we meet her holding a hilariously oversized bundle of gifts for her dad. With her earnest portrayal of Cindy Lou Who, Momsen holds her own and grounds the film whenever Carrey s Grinch threatens to send it too far off the rails. It s Frenetic Because It Has to Be, and It WorksWhen the film was released, the majority of critics pointed out that its tonal inconsistencies and overly meta jokes seemed out of place and made for a jarring experience. These are valid points; the film is oddly concerned with the very adult lives of the Whos and, in particular, the breathy, sensual presence of Martha May Whovier (Baranski, who knew exactly how to play the role).Without its hyper pacing, though, the film’s satire doesn’t quite land. Next to Jim Carrey s delivery of spastic, hee-haw humor, a stilted, sedated Whoville just doesn t make sense and wouldn t inspire any sympathy for the Grinch in a way that would stand apart from the 1966 TV special. Ron Howard knew this and deployed a splashy, flamboyant directorial style, turning the Whos into bombastic, self-absorbed creatures every bit as preposterous as the Grinch himself and teetering between campy excess and surprisingly dark pathos. From the moment James Horner’s score chimes in and Anthony Hopkins begins his narration, Howard chaotically blends Dr. Seuss’ iconic poetry and illustrations with surreal, heightened creations meant to remind us that this is as much a fantasy as it is a reflection of our own reality. The commentary is sometimes overshadowed by the film s candy-colored distractions, but it s there, and it only works because of the choices Howard made. For decades, he has been a reliable storyteller of a certain vision of America (for better or worse), and in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, he boldly stepped away from that vision to critique it. It was a risk that paid off, and the film remains both a whimsical piece of holiday entertainment and a reminder of what makes the season a cause for celebration. Only a Grinch would argue otherwise. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was released in theaters on November 17, 2000.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

It s been nearly two years since the second season of Westworld premiered to HBO and a lot has changed. When we last checked in with the series, which was created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Maeve (Thandie Newton), two robot characters who were initially programmed to bend at the whims of the park s uber-rich clientele, had become fully sentient with violent results.Blind with vengeful rage, Dolores went on a murderous rampage. Before ultimately escaping the confines of the Westworld theme park, the killer host pillaged The Forge, the supercomputer holding all of the guest data the Delos corporation had been secretly stealing.  She caused a flood, deleted a whole lot of those data pearls in the process, and installed her consciousness into the host replica of new Delos boss Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) before heading into the Valley Beyond.(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Things for former brothel owner Maeve went a different direction, entirely. After her glitch woke her up, the sentient host infiltrated the inner-workings of the park, enlisting Hector, Armistice and the rest of their outlaw gang, as well as Head of Narrative Design, Lee Sizemore,  to help in the search of her long lost daughter. Unfortunately for her, as she closed in on reuniting with the girl, Delores and Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) rained hell upon the park, leaving Maeve shot. As she bled out, she watched her daughter exit the park for greener digital pastures with Native American host Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon).Discovering they were just pawns in a greater reality out-of-their reach is ultimately what drove each character s journey after their awakening was complete. For Bernard, the right-hand to park-creator Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), his realization that he was a synthetic being this whole time — one who was created by Ford in the image of his former partner — was one of the show s big reveals in its first season. This twist (and there were many) led Bernard to enable Dolores on her bloody journey all while attempting to pick up his own mental pieces, while he fell into an identity crisis, of sorts.(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)The HBO series delved further the white hat vs. black hat morality play originally introduced in season 1. It also filled in the blanks regarding the political drama unfolding behind the scenes within Delos. Less-than-savory struggles lie behind the character motivations of Charlotte, Dr. Ford s tenacious young replacement, and Delos investor William (Jimmi Simpson) who evolved into the Man in Black (Ed Harris), the coldhearted gunslinger hell-bent on burning the whole park to the ground. The series, which puts the concepts of free will, corporate greed, and a towering god complex in a blender, gave viewers plenty of answers in the season 2 finale, only to lead us to many more questions once it all ended. Needless to say, ahead of its highly-anticipated return, which takes the story outside of the confines of the park and adds Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) to the mix, expectations are running high. Does the new season live up to the hype? Here s what the critics have to say:SEASON 3 IS A SLICK-LOOKING CYBERPUNK REBOOT(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Ironically, the best part of Westworld Season 3 might be those overwhelming visual tableaus: the spectacular shots of a copter floating over a metropolis, the romantic European vistas of Maeve’s WWII world, and even the intimate hell that Caleb is going through. Westworld doesn’t just try to show us a haunted vision of the future, but it immerses us in it. — Meghan O Keefe, DeciderTime has passed since the end of season 2, and we find Dolores dealing with her new life in the outside world. In Los Angeles, everything looks like Tesla s version of Blade Runner, with Cybertruck police cars carving up a clean, Japan-inspired city. — Jennifer Bisset, CNETIronically, the best part of Westworld Season 3 might be those overwhelming visual tableaus: the spectacular shots of a copter floating over a metropolis, the romantic European vistas of Maeve’s WWII world, and even the intimate hell that Caleb is going through. Westworld doesn’t just try to show us a haunted vision of the future, but it immerses us in it. — Meghan O Keefe, DeciderTHIS NEW COAT OF PAINT CAN T COVER UP SOME CLUNKY STORYTELLINGWestworld wants to generate another existential conversation in Season 3, but even as the show swaps settings and introduces new faces, the details that make it come to life are perfunctory. — Brandon Katz, ObserverAction scenes are slick and easy-to-track, but they’re also detached, lacking the gleeful turns and grand lines that punctuated similar thrills from previous seasons. Backstory that used to be unveiled with a flourish is delivered sans showmanship, which can be refreshing when the new intel doesn’t warrant a whole to-do, but only contributes further to the new season’s straightforward execution. — Ben Travers, IndieWirePerhaps the flatness of its new setting might have served, or might eventually serve in the season’s second half, as ironic counterpoint: The peculiarity of the robot uprising exists against a backdrop so flat and familiar as to make it all the more intriguing. But what tends to happen instead is that the flatness inflects every corner of the story and sucks away the vibrancy. — Daniel D Addario, Variety Westworld returns with the batteries charged in an energetic start.— Alberto Carlos, EspinofDOLORES IS A VENGEFUL ROBOT WORTH ROOTING FOR(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Season 3 Dolores is a vast upgrade. She s pissed off, but not blindly ruthless. She s bent on giving humans what she thinks they deserve, but smart enough to know this world doesn t operate like Westworld did. This is the kind of Dolores she should have been all along: a victim you feel empathy for with a cause worth fighting for — she s seen the worst that humans can be and believes her kind is the next step in evolution. She s not a one-note horseman of the robo-apocalypse. — Tim Surette, TV GuideDolores has often been a difficult character to track thanks to her regular identity crises, veering between damsel-in-distress and utterly unsympathetic villain, but in the third season, she finally seems to have hit a pleasant and steady middle-ground. We don’t fully know Dolores’ endgame, but we do know the ruthlessness with which she’ll pursue it and the remarkable capabilities she possesses to see it through. — Haleigh Fouch, ColliderAARON PAUL S PERFORMANCE IS FINE(Photo by John P. Westworld is 100% back on its bullshit and, depending on how much you like your TV to be a rug-yanking crash course in skepticism, still presents beautiful illusion after beautiful illusion for you to doubt. — Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineAll of the standard questions Westworld brings up in viewers remain: Is this person real or a host? Is this something happening now, or a flashback or flash forward? What exactly is reality, anyway? If something feels real, and affects someone like a real trauma, does that mean it’s real even if it takes place in a virtual playground? — Ron Hogan, Den of GeekExpect the passions around “Westworld” to erupt once again when Season 3 arrives, confusion reigns and the series’ fans and detractors face off to defend their side. — Lorraine Ali, Los Angeles TimesWestworld season 3 premieres on Sunday, March 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

Pixar is such a quality brand that even its “lesser” products prove to be essential for fans of their animated output. The studio’s latest feature, Luca, is arguably on that lower tier, according to critics — not among Pixar’s best but still better than most alternatives — hence the high Tomatometer score we’ve come to expect, even if there isn t quite as much of the excitement we usually find in the reviews themselves. Some critics think that it’s too basic, while others believe its lack of complexity is a good thing. And some critics trust that there’s more to the movie than what’s on the surface and it requires repeat viewings to properly appreciate it. Fortunately for anyone hoping to find out, Luca can be watched over and over on Disney+ starting this Friday, June 18.Here’s what critics are saying about Pixar’s Luca:How does it compare to other Pixar movies?Luca leans far lighter in tone and effect, but it’s no less memorable.  Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsLuca is easily Pixar’s most intimate and laidback effort since Ratatouille.  Keith Watson, Slant MagazineThe last fifteen minutes of Luca might go down as one of the best endings Pixar has ever produced.  Ryan McQuade, Awards WatchThis might be Pixar’s most childlike and cartoony offering.  Brian Roan, The Film StageMore of The Good Dinosaur or Onward level for me, Luca doesn’t quite reach the potential that I have grown to expect from Pixar.  Christie Cronan, Raising WhasiansWhile some material may hit with younger audiences, Luca makes for Pixar’s least enchanting, least special film yet.  Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com(Photo by Pixar)Is it just a simpler Pixar movie than we re used to?Luca is nowhere near as complex or deep as other Pixar fare and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportAll the more satisfying for its simplicity… the rare Pixar movie that doesn’t feel like it’s been thought to death. David Ehrlich, IndieWireIt is rigorously unphilosophical in a way that proves to be its greatest strength. Clarisse Loughrey, IndependentBy going back to basics, we get a real connection with these characters. Ryan McQuade, Awards WatchLuca has the look and feel of a more disposable flick, but that’s just on the surface. Beneath, it has the beating heart of a classic family tale in the making. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarLuca never quite rises beyond being adorable — and hey, these days, adorable is fine —there’s something that just isn’t there. Moira MacDonald, Seattle TimesHow are the visuals? The real magic of Luca is its visuals… The richness of the settings in both realms is a constant source of pleasure. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterLooking like a hand-drawn fairy tale book come to animated life, Luca has a captivating visual style with every detail popping. Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-TimesThe gorgeous animation of Luca… is unlike other Pixar movies you ve seen. Ian Sandwell, Digital SpyIt’s been a while since they’ve done anything visually distinct and felt vastly different from the rest of their fare. Thankfully, Luca is that breath of fresh air. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsPixar’s Luca is proof once again that cartoon movies keep getting better and better with the technology. Christie Cronan, Raising WhasiansRyan FujitaniDoes it bring on the usual waterworks? For much of this film, you’ll be thinking Luca will be one of the rare Pixar movies not to make you cry. But… [it] may just leave you in a puddle of tears. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportYeah, it’s cliched to say “I got misty-eyed in a Pixar movie,” but damn by the way they invest you with the friendship, it’s difficult not to find yourself feeling all warm and fuzzy. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsHappy tears at how lovely it all is, fortunately, we re not talking Toy Story 3 or Inside Out trauma here. Ian Sandwell, Digital SpyI watched twice and no Inside Out or Up equivalent eye watering… Luca misses the Pixar emotional pull for me. Christie Cronan, Raising WhasiansAre the characters memorable?Giulia s lovable father Massimo, who instantly goes into the all-time list for best animated dads. Ian Sandwell, Digital SpyA translucent anglerfish who Sacha Baron Cohen turns into one of Pixar’s funniest characters in less than two minutes of screen time. David Ehrlich, IndieWireAs always, the Pixar magicians create a wonderfully populated world: I particularly enjoyed the cat character, who stares fixedly as only cats can. Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times(Photo by Pixar)How is the screenplay? With all of its wit and perfectly interwoven story threads and running gags, [the script] bears all the hallmarks of the best of Pixar’s story trust. Brian Roan, The Film StageThe script… like all the best Pixar movies, laces touching life lessons and delicate helpings of sentiment into what’s essentially a caper. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterWhy do another narrative about a girl stuck in the middle of two best friends?… The primary story flows through the motions. Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.comUnfortunately, there’s also an episodic, shaggy-dog quality to the plotting that undercuts Luca’s emotional beats. Keith Watson, Slant MagazineAre its themes up for interpretation? This really is a metaphorical film. The sea monsters could be any of us who feel different. Maybe they’re a metaphor for the LGBTQ community. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesIt’s the kind of metaphor that could be applied to a hundred different situations, but there’s an inherently queer subtext bubbling beneath the surface. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportVery relatable for anyone who is within the LGBTQ+ community… [and also] works for a universal audience who may not identify as LGBTQ+ but can relate to someone who is. Ryan McQuade, Awards Watch[It] serves as a kind of all-purpose allegory, where audiences are free to narrow in on its queer subtext, its rebuke of xenophobia, or its triumph against any facet of small-mindedness. Clarisse Loughrey, IndependentIts themes of coming-of-age resemble too much of Pixar’s existing catalog — and without a narrative that really makes these themes feel fresh. Nicole Clark, IGN MoviesIt never settles on exactly what it wants to say… It never makes a cohesive, powerful point. Germain Lussier, io9.comWho is Luca ultimately for? While Disney and Pixar’s Luca is fun for the whole family, there are some very important messages for children laced throughout the film. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyLuca is entertainment for all ages as its bright colors and fast-moving action will appeal to the kids while the humor and themes should speak to older viewers. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsWhile there are a few moments that may be a little tense for younger kids… I recommend Pixar’s Luca for kids as young as 5-6 years old. Christie Cronan, Raising WhasiansWill it remind us of any other films?Luca is the closest that Pixar has ever come to capturing the ineffable spirit of a Studio Ghibli film. David Ehrlich, IndieWireThe smooth, rounded character designs are something more akin to the stop-motion work of Aardman Animations. Doug Jamieson, The Jam ReportThere are obvious shades of The Little Mermaid in this fairy tale-like story… but Luca plays like a deliberate inversion of that Disney classic. Keith Watson, Slant MagazineLuca is The Little Mermaid without the heart, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs without the laughs. Roger Moore, Movie Nation(Photo by Pixar)Is it rewatchable?Expect to visit this destination more than once. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsSince it’s so dense and layered, my guess is it’ll only improve, solidify and blossom with multiple viewings… I do want to watch it again. Germain Lussier, io9.comIt’s also so fabulously summery that you shouldn’t be surprised if you return to it over and over for that sunny feeling. Deirdre Molumby, entertainment.ieWill Luca leave us hopeful for Pixar s future?Luca should be the model going forward for Pixar, with character driving entertaining stories instead of big concepts that fail to execute and leave you feeling hollow by the end (looking at you Soul). Ryan McQuade, Awards Watch[It] hopefully anticipates how the monolithic animation house will continue to create more intimate fare now that it can use Disney+ as a safety net. David Ehrlich, IndieWireLuca releases in theaters and streams on Disney+ on June 18, 2021.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Ghcxuf It s estimated that between 75 and 90 percent of films made before 1929 are either lost or only exist in incomplete form. As part of our RT Archives project, we are collecting contemporaneous reviews for those films – see a full list here and read what critics said about them at the time – and shining a spotlight on the stories and people behind them. Learn more about the RT Archives project here. Mr. Babadook – the tall and top-hatted monster from Jennifer Kent’s acclaimed film The Babadook – might be the most iconic horror villain of recent times. (Don’t believe us? Check out the memes… or just leave your house on Halloween evening.) But while the Babadook is a marvel of modern horror, its roots date back to the earliest days of cinema, and to one film in particular: the Lon Chaney-starring London After Midnight. Here, as part of our RT Archives project, we take a look at that film and how its distinctive visuals inspired one of recent horror’s most celebrated works. To read reviews of director Tod Browning’s 1927 London After Midnight, a murder mystery flavored with ghouls and hypnosis, is to know that it is terrifying. The Film Daily wrote that “Lon Chaney s latest chill raiser [has] a story certain to disturb the nervous system of the more sensitive picture patrons.” But modern audiences will never know just how nerve-wracking the film is. Although it has been reconstructed by Rick Schmidlin with the help of recovered still photographs, a script, and new score by Robert Israel – you can find details of that effort at TCM – audiences can no longer see London After Midnight in its original form: the only known remaining copy was destroyed in an MGM vault fire in the 1960s.(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Trawl through contemporary reviews, though, and you see that a major contributor to the film’s overall creepiness was a mysterious character who – spoiler alert! – is later revealed to be Scotland Yard Inspector Professor Edward C. Burke in disguise. Of the limited imagery from the film that remains, it s this figure, with his bulging eyes, pointed teeth, and distorted grin, that stands out. The Sydney Morning Herald’s April 30, 1928 review addressed the effect of the creature at the time: “The few moments when a squat black figure like a bat, with glaring eyes and enormous teeth, is seen coming down the stairs in company with a woman in grey robes, whose face is terrifying in its corpse-like absence of expression, imprint themselves very strongly on the mind.”The role was fittingly played by famed character actor Chaney, known as “the man of a thousand faces” due to his ability to apply his own makeup and prosthetics, and distort his body for the many roles that required it. He utilized those skills to deliver memorable performances in The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, among others. But it was the wide-eyed, grinning Professor Burke that might have been his most singularly disturbing; at the very least, according to a 1928 Photoplay review, the costuming and makeup used “was as gruesome as any [Chaney] had ever worn.” In December of 1927, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle wrote, “Mr. Chaney obligingly applies a figurative bit of ice to the vertebrae by walking in and out of scenes in properly horrifying makeup.”(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection )Keen-eyed movie fans immediately saw similarities between “The Man In the Beaver Hat,” as Chaney’s London After Midnight figure came to be known, and Mr. Babadook, the creature from a mysterious pop-up book who enters the home – and/or minds – of a grieving mother and her young son in Kent’s The Babadook. There’s the hat, the black-rimmed eyes, and the exaggerated mouth and teeth. In 2014, Kent told the Mountain Express that the image of Chaney in the 1927 movie “really impressed itself upon me.”She added in the same interview: “What I loved about that particular image – and you can also see it in the footage we used of [Chaney] in the movie on TV from Phantom of the Opera – is that you can see that it’s a person’s face. It’s just a face that’s been distorted – without CGI obviously – but manipulated so that it looks human, but almost not. And I think that London After Midnight, shot with his face and his mouth pulled apart like that, is really frightening.”There is a thematic similarity, too, between how both creatures are handled in Browning and Kent’s films. In The Babadook, the creature is more than a terrifying specter who must be vanquished for Essie Davis’s Amelia to move on – he becomes something that the protagonist must learn to make space for in her life. In London After Midnight, Chaney’s mysterious figure is misunderstood as well: He’s ultimately not a villain, and becomes a key part of solving the film’s mystery.(Photo by ©IFC Midnight)That turn resonates with something Chaney told journalist Ruth Waterbury in the same issue of Photoplay in which London was so well reviewed – and his performance deemed “perfect.” “I’ve tried to show that the lowliest people frequently have the highest ideals,” Chaney said. “In the lower depths when life hasn’t been too pleasant for me I’ve always [had] that gentleness of feeling, that compassion of an under dog for a fellow sufferer.”London After isn’t Chaney’s only lost film.  Many of the short silent films from his early career are considered lost, like  The Chimney’s Secret, An Elephant On His Hands, Father and the Boys, Almost an Actress, as well as later film The Big City, another collaboration with director Tod Browning from 1928. You can our guide to cinema s lost films and read reviews of those films here.London After Midnight was released in theaters December 3, 1927. The Babadook was released in U.S. theaters November 28, 2014. On an Apple device? This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new projects for stars like Idris Elba, Morgan Freeman, and Owen Wilson. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRISTOPHER NOLAN  TO TAKE ON TRUE STORY OF ATOMIC BOMB INVENTOR (Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Paramount Pictures)Every once in a while, pop culture hits upon a certain peanut butter and chocolate combination that goes together far better than you could ve guessed. In 2014, that happened when Warner Bros. revealed the very first teaser for their reboot of Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 76%), featuring the ominous voice of atomic bomb creator J. Robert Oppenheimer saying, over scenes of mass destruction, I am now become death, destroyer of worlds. (J. Robert Oppenhimer was a very serious dude.) Now, another very serious dude, Christopher Nolan, is preparing his next film after Tenet (Fresh at 70%), and it s a drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his involvement in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II, which led to the destruction of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The screenplay is reportedly finished and being looked at by various studios, which is something of a departure for Nolan, who has pretty consistently worked with Warner Bros. for most of his career as a Hollywood director (not counting his early films like Memento). The reason for Nolan s interest in shopping around his Oppenheimer drama is being interpreted by press as being directly related to Nolan s dissatisfaction with Tenet debuting on streaming day-and-date with theatrical, which included Nolan slamming HBO Max as the worst streaming service. No definite casting decisions have been made, but frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy (Nolan s Scarecrow in Batman Begins, for example) might be in the runnning to star as Oppenheimer. (Cillian Murphy, also a very serious dude).Other Top Headlines1. SECRET TRAILER FOR P.T. ANDERSON S NEXT FILM DEBUTS AT SELECT CINEMAS(Photo by Laurie Sparham /© Focus Features)While decades like the 1980s and 1960s continue to leave prominent, long-lasting impressions on pop culture, the 1970s offer some pretty amazing relics, too. Consider, for example, the Licorice Pizza record store chain named for the physical appearance of a vinyl record which once had 34 locations throughout California until it was bought by Musicland in 1986. This week, we learned that Licorice Pizza happens to be the new title of the latest California period piece (previously called Soggy Bottom) from director Paul Thomas Anderson, who previously gave us the similarly themed Boogie Nights (Certified Fresh at 93%). The trailer appeared at theaters around the world in front of very specific films, such as American Graffiti and Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, suggesting someone chose those films for a reason. The trailer, which hasn t appeared online (yet), also reveals that Maya Rudolph and Tom Waits, who hadn t previously been announced, are also part of the film s cast, which also includes Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, and Philip Seymour Hoffman s son Cooper Hoffman in a lead role.2. PARASITE CO-STAR JOINS THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE (Photo by Neon)The surprise wins for Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%) at last year s Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director) are still slowly having an impact, although arguably slower than usual. South Korean actor Seo Jun Park, who had a supporting role in Parasite, recently departed from Seoul to start filming on an unspecified Marvel Studios film, but most sources have guessed that the project in question is the Captain Marvel sequel called The Marvels (11/11/2022). (The Marvels isn t the only MCU movie currently filming, as the two others are Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania). Presuming it is indeed The Marvels that Seo Jun Park is joining, it s unclear what character he might be playing, but the fansites already have some good guesses.3. OWEN WILSON AND ROSARIO DAWSON JOIN HAUNTED MANSION REMAKE(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Walt Disney Pictures is currently casting up their next attempt at adapting the theme park attraction Haunted Mansion, which was previously adapted as a 2003 movie (Rotten at 14%) starring Eddie Murphy. Before this week, Tiffany Haddish and LaKeith Stanfield were already attached to star in the new Haunted Mansion, and this week, they were joined by two more stars. On Tuesday, Owen Wilson (who co-starred earlier this summer in Loki on Disney+) joined Haunted Mansion in an unknown role, and then the next day, Rosario Dawson also joined the remake. In related news, the made-for-streaming movie Muppets Haunted Mansion will debut on Disney+ on October 8, 2021.4. IDRIS ELBA SAYS WE ALL DIE YOUNG (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Daveed Diggs might be best known for his dual roles in Hamilton (Certified Fresh at 97%) as Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette, but Diggs also co-wrote and starred in the indie comedy hit Blindspotting (Certified Fresh at 94%). Now, another screenplay written by Diggs is reportedly a hot sales package at the Toronto International Film Festival market. Idris Elba, Justice Smith (Pokémon Detective Pikachu), and Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey s Black Bottom) are attached to star in the drama We All Die Young, which will be directed by Jake Schreier (Robot Frank, Certified Fresh at 86%; Paper Towns, Rotten at 58%). Smith will star in We All Die Young as a rapper in the midst of breaking big who s undertaking the biggest live tour anyone has ever seen (the screenplay is also drawing comparisons to Fellini s 8 1/2).5. FOUR SCREEN LEGENDS JOIN RETIREMENT HOME FILM NOIR(Photo by Derek Storm, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Taylor Hackford has a long career dating back to the early 1980s that has resulted in two Academy Award nominations for Best Directing (An Officer and a Gentleman and Ray), but in the 17 years since Ray, his Tomatometer scores have all been Rotten. Hackford may be swinging for the fences with his new film, Sniff, which is described as a stylish reinvention of the film noir genre set at a high-end luxury retirement community. Sniff is being sold at the Toronto Internatiional Film Festival this week with four impressive movie stars attached, three of whom have won Academy Awards for acting, while the fourth is a nominee: Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, Danny DeVito, and Helen Mirren (also, perhaps not coincidentally, Mrs. Taylor Hackford). Freeman will play a retired detective, DeVito will play his partner, Pacino will play a kingpin, and Helen Mirren will play his femme fatale enforcer. 6. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW TO GET THE SAVING MR. BANKS TREATMENT (Photo by Keystone Features/Getty Images)Hollywood has a long history of depicting its own relationship with writers and screenwriters, such as Barton Fink, Adaptation, and last year s multiple Academy Award-winner Mank. A similar (but less common) trope involves the writer of a popular story or character who is wooed by Hollywood to sell the rights, such as with the making-of-Mary-Poppins comedy Saving Mr. Banks. Like Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers, George Bernard Shaw was also apparently hesitant about selling a popular play to Hollywood was George Bernard Shaw; his Pygmalion was first adapted as a movie in 1938 (Fresh at 90%) before it was adapted again as the more popular classic film My Fair Lady (Certified Fresh at 95%), which won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Rex Harrison). The story of how it all started in 1933 will soon be told in the film Mr. Shaw Goes to Hollywood. Emmy- and BAFTA-winning British actor Derek Jacobi will star as George Bernard Shaw, alongside Dustin Hoffman (as Louis B. Mayer), Sam Neill (as William Randolph Hearst), Eileen Atkins, Aidan Turner (as Clark Gable), and Brittany Snow.7. BEST SELLING 1980S DOLL TEDDY RUXPIN FINALLY READY FOR THE MOVIES (Photo by South China Morning Post/Getty Images)Teddy Ruxpin was a talking teddy bear that was first introduced for the Christmas season of 1985, and it quickly became the best selling toy for that year and for 1986. When Chucky starred in the original Child s Play horror film in 1988, he didn t look anything like Teddy Ruxpin, but an argument can be made that it was an inspiration (and horror fans have since written Teddy Ruxpin stories online). Teddy Ruxpin himself, however, never got a movie (and the Teddy Ruxpin TV show only ran for one season). Nostalgia is a strong incentive for the movies, however, so DJ2 Entertainment, the production company behind video game adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog and Tomb Raider, has acquired the film and TV rights to Teddy Ruxpin and is reportedly talking to potential writers with the goal of a Sonic the Hedgehog-style live action/animation movie that would then lead into an animated TV series. On an Apple device? The Marvel entity is alive and well with the second-best third weekend in film history. But signs of it reaching one particular milestone may be fading even while it stays on track to potentially become the biggest worldwide film of all time.King of the Crop: Endgame May Have Seen Its Last Weekend At No. 1(Photo by Marvel Studios)While the expectations of this week’s primary challenger, Detective Pikachu, were high, Avengers: Endgame was still a very easy No. 1 at the box office. Its million haul is fourth all-time in third weekend grosses, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar, and Black Panther. However, just as James Cameron had to concede his domestic Titanic grosses this week to Endgame and will be doing so next weekend with Avatar, J.J. Abrams may be able to press pause on his concession speech. Because believe it or not, even with a 0 million head start, Endgame has actually now fallen off the pace of The Force Awakens domestic haul.By the end of Day 17, Abrams’ film — boosted in part by Christmas vacations — had made 3 million domestically. Endgame, meanwhile, now stands at 3 million in the U.S. and Canada. The weekday numbers will now align a bit closer, but there are several weeks with school still in session and i the pattern continues, Endgame will fall short of the + million that Awakens, Avatar, and Panther made in weekend four, opening up the possibility that John Wick: Chapter 3 actually nudges it out of the top spot. After that, even if Aladdin turns out to be a Memorial Day weekend fail, it should still have enough interest to knock Endgame back a little further. The weekend of June 14-16 could end up being the last mention of Endgame in the top ten. By then The Force Awakens number would be 6 million. Can Endgame survive the challengers to become the all-time domestic champion? Or will it just have to settle for being the all-time global champion? The film is currently .485 billion, and only needs another 3 million to achieve that goal.Rotten Returns: STX May Want To Auction Off Poms AgainCritics were not having much fun at Poms, the Diane Keaton-led retirement home cheerleader comedy that currently has a 29% on the Tomatometer.
