(Photo by Netflix)In their initial meetings, the executive talked about the sensation of jeopardy the old cartoon conveyed to younger viewers despite being outwardly silly. To his mind at the time, it was possible for Skeletor to win. Only with as he grew older did he come to understand why that would never be the case on the Filmation show. Nevertheless, the experience of that potential jeopardy stayed in his mind.“The dude kind of charged us with recreating a memory, if you will, of [that] feeling,” Smith said. And as viewers will see, jeopardy is definitely part of Masters of the Universe: Revelation. There are big shake-ups and, indeed, revelations that will surprise fans of the old show: from the selection of featured characters to the way it incorporates ideas from other MOTU projects.(Photo by Netflix)Another of the program’s interesting twists is its focus on Teela (Sarah Michelle Gelllar), a member of He-Man’s inner circle despite being denied key secrets about the world around her. When she learns about one of them at the beginning of Revelation, it sets her on a new path. According to Smith, giving her a bigger role in the series was part of a desire on both Biaselli’s and Mattel’s part to give the other characters more of their own individual stories. Or, as Smith phrased their request: “Look, we love that He-Man sells, but we got a bunch of f ing toys. So use all the characters.” As it happens, a lot of Teela’s story was already suggested by ideas in the toys and the 1980s series. But the format of both meant she could never find resolution – something which is possible in Revelation.“We started diving into the Teela of it all, man, and then realizing like, ‘oh, s , this is a story of betrayal,’” Smith said.Fans of the Filmation cartoon may remember two secrets withheld from her by He-Man, Man-at-Arms, and the Sorceress. One is definitely more important to the events of Revelation’s first batch of episodes while the other is … not forgotten.“That created rich situations for drama,” Smith said. “To me, [He-Man and Masters of the Universe] has always been family melodrama. You go back and look at all the shows, and it s all about like, ‘We got a problem. We re going to get through it together’ and stuff like that. All the characters like and respect one another on each side and whatnot.”The old show was also famous for recapping its moral quandaries at the end of each episode. “So for us, the same thing is going in here,” Smith continued. “The idea is like all the relationships are the absolute same [from the old show]. They just have to deal with death and consequences for the first time.”(Photo by Netflix)That sense of consequences extends out to other relationships like Evil-Lyn’s (Lena Heady) and Beast Man’s (Kevin Michael Richardson) devotion to Skeletor. It also changes the way Teela regards her adoptive father Duncan — aka Man-at-Arms — especially after the events of the first episode, which really alter the Eternian battlefield after nearly 40 years. The overall effect is not a bleaker Master of the Universe, but a more serious version in which even joke characters like Orko (Griffin Newman) can carry dramatic content. As it turns out, giving the character a chance to shine was something Smith and the other writers seriously debated.“Some people swear by him, and other people [were like,] ‘He ruined the show for me. I hate the stupid magic jokes and [things] like that,’” Smith said of the writing room conversations.(Photo by Netflix)The floating and legless magician of questionable skill was a favorite of Filmation co-founder Lou Scheimer, who also voiced the character in the ’80s. He was popular enough to get a toy of his own in the classic MOTU line, but his presence made the old series feel more, well, childish. Watching episodes of the show now — or clips from He-Man She-Ra: A Christmas Special — will definitely illustrate why he can be a divisive character for anyone over the age of 9.But that debate led to a mission statement: “How do we make Orko tattoo-worthy?”“We knew that Orko was a kid’s way into the show, right? Every kid who watched the show, they re going to dream about being He-Man. They can aspire to that, but who do they identify with? The dude who is always shoved to the side and not as good as the adults and can t be counted on to do the right thing. And he s little as well, so that s their way in,” Smith explained. “In this iteration, it s telling the kids like, ‘From little acorns, great oaks grow.’ The smallest can, at the end of the day, become the biggest under the right circumstances. So we thought so much about Orko. We wanted to make him bulletproof, so much so, that if anyone was like, ‘Orko sucks,’ it s like, all right, we failed.”Smith also credited Newman, who actively lobbied for the role on Twitter, for bringing an extra level of pathos to the part: “That f ing speech … I’d give Griffin Newman a f ing Emmy right now for his performance, where he s just like, Take me on an adventure. I promise I won t mess up like the old days.’”

(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Image)GOOOAALLL!!! Apple TV+ s feel-good comedy Ted Lasso received the 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for best comedy series. In total, between Sunday s broadcast and last week s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the Jason Sudeikis-led series about a mustachioed fish-out-of-water British football coach received 11 trophies including one for its leading man, plus supporting acting trophies for actor Brett Goldstein and actress Hannah Waddingham. That 11-trophy haul was something matched by limited series The Queen s Gambit and drama The Crown, which dominated the night in their respective categories.See what critics are saying about the 73rd Emmy AwardsCheck out the best looks from the Emmys 2021 red carpetSee the full list of winners from the 2021 Emmy AwardsDespite adhering to quarantine regulations by keeping the event to an intimate gathering in Los Angeles as well as a watch party in London (where it was 1am when the broadcast started), the Cedric the Entertainer-hosted CBS program managed to hand out 28 awards including the annual Governors Award, which this year went to actress-director and dance extraordinaire, Debbie Allen. That things went so smoothly – if at times rather dully – might actually have been the biggest surprise of them all, as most of the winners were as routine as a morning drop-off of biscuits from an overly optimistic Kansan. But there were some big bold takeaways from the night, not all of them the kind you wanna sing about 1. The Brits Rule the Night(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)It wasn t just Ted Lasso that won big at the Emmys. As mentioned, the TV Academy also raised a few pints to Netflix s monarchy drama, The Crown. The series won best drama, creator Peter Morgan won the Emmy for writing for a drama series and Jessica Hobbs took home the Emmy for best directing for a drama series. The series actors Olivia Colman, Josh O Connor, Tobias Menzies, and Gillian Anderson (who was technically born in Chicago, but is married to Morgan and spent a chunk of her childhood in London, so we ll let it slide) also received honors.Other British winners included Mare of Easttown s Kate Winslet, who received the Emmy for lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie and I May Destroy You s Michaela Coel, who received the Emmy for writing for a limited or anthology series or movie. Ewan McGregor, who is Scottish, also won the lead actor in a limited series or movie Emmy for his work in Netflix s Halston. How did the Brits celebrate? In style. Check out the Ted Lasso team performing the Roy Kent cheer below The whole Ted Lasso cast crew did the Roy Kent cheer backstage and it was pretty special #Emmys pic.twitter.com/2HNJsTuc5d Kevin Polowy (@djkevlar) September 20, 20212. Michaela Coel Implores Creators to Write the Tale That Scares You One of the biggest surprises of the night wasn t that Coel won for writing the HBO limited series I May Destroy You, but that she didn t win more awards for her work on the powerful piece about rape, assault, and survival. (The 2020 miniseries is Certified Fresh with a 98% Tomatometer). She was also nominated for directing and starring in the project, which was also nominated for best limited series or anthology.Coel s remarks upon accepting her Emmy will also not soon be forgotten. During the concise and poignant 33-odd second acceptance Coel told her fellow creatives to write the tale the scares you; that makes you feel uncertain; that is uncomfortable. I dare you. Other winners with memorable Emmy acceptance speeches included Mare of Easttown s Julianne Nicholson, who reached out to all the ladies in Philadelphia and Kabul, Hacks star Jean Smart, who thanked her late husband, and Governors Award winner Allen, who spoke to the women in Texas and Afghanistan as well as the next generation who are just beginning to fight for equality.3. Lack of Diversity Among the Winners. Again.(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)After last year s Emmy Awards saw major gains for performers of color, in particular Black performers, this year s ceremony was a step back in that department. Although RuPaul made history, becoming the person of color with the most Emmy wins, there were very few people of color who would eventually be on the winner s stage. This was frustrating to many viewers, as many performers of color were nominated this year, including Billy Porter, Mj Rodriguez, Uzo Aduba, the cast of A Black Lady Sketch Show, and the late Michael K. Williams, among many others. On the brighter side, several of the Emmys bits did recognize Black talent. One featured host Cedric and three different actresses who have played his wives on sitcoms. (The Neighborhood s Tichina Arnold, The Soul Man s Niecy Nash, and The Steve Harvey Show s Terri J. Vaughn).4. Touching Tributes to Friends We ve Lost, Including Michael K. Williams and Norm Macdonald(Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/FilmMagic)While the traditional In Memoriam segment was as tear-jerking as always, several people on stage also took the time to remember their friends. Both Last Week Tonight s John Oliver and Saturday Night Live s Lorne Michaels referenced comedian Norm Macdonald, who died last week, in their acceptance speeches. And Kerry Washington made a point of mentioning the work of Michael K. Williams when presenting the supporting actor in a drama category, in which he was nominated for his work in HBO s Lovecraft Country. The reaction on her face when her friend lost that category was palpable.5. Schitt s Creek Cast Shows Why We Still Can t Get Enough of Them(Photo by Cliff Lipson/CBS via Getty Images)It s been a year since the cast of Netflix s Schitt s Creek swept the Emmys and kept us laughing all the way through that ceremony. So that s why the stars banter before presenting the award for best writing for a comedy series felt so warm. Was there actually a teleprompter issue? Was star Eugene Levy actually giving notes to the Emmy Awards writers? Does it even matter? Sometimes it s not worth asking why we re given good things.6. Conan O Brien Photobombs His Way Into Our HeartsWhen you re 6 4 with a shock of red hair and a recognizable laugh, it s hard to blend into a crowd. Especially if you re Conan O Brien. The talk-show host made his presence known at the 2021 Emmy Awards, even though he did not actually receive an Emmy. He made sure to crash any opportunity he could get, be it improvising remarks to TV Academy CEO and chairman Frank Scherma or joining Stephen Colbert and his producers on stage when they accepted the award for best variety special (live) for Stephen Colbert s Election Night 2020.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.亚博在线登录Little Fires Everywhere: Season 1 (2020) 79% (Hulu)Aside from the star power involved – Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Joshua Jackson, and Rosemary DeWitt are just some of the names in the cast – what makes Little Fires Everywhere a compelling watch is the whodunit factor. The season opens with a scene revealing the climactic ending, leaving you to try and determine just how the characters and their choices throughout the ensuing eight episodes got us there. Based on Celeste Ng’s popular 2017 novel by the same name, the show also contends with the same tough topics tackled in the book, like class warfare and race relations. And while it slaps you in the face with metaphors at times, the show is addictive, and manages to stray just enough from the book’s original ending to satisfy and surprise casual watchers as well as Ng s fans. – Kyle Moss, ProducerWhere to Watch: HuluCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (eight-episode limited series)Review 95% (Comedy Central)It seems as though our social distancing isn t going to end any time soon, but thanks to Review there s a way to experience a variety of real-life situations from the comfort of your own home. On this show, viewers call in and wonder what it s like to do and feel many different things; Andy Daly commits to each task and then helpfully rates them at the end of each segment. Miss driving your car? Let him experience Road Rage for you so you don t have to anymore (1.5 stars out of 5). Is there a long-simmering feud in the back of your mind? Revenge gets a 5 out of 5. So if you re ruminating about all you re missing out on, to quote the opening theme: Life. It s literally all we have.  But is it any good? . Now you know. (FYI Revenge was later downgraded to a 1 out of 5). – Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorWhere to watch: Amazon, Vudu, iTunesCommitment: 8 hours (three seasons)The Plot Against America: Season 1 (2020) 87% (HBO)I know a lot of people who watched the first episode of HBO s The Plot Against America and abandoned ship because, well, there wasn t much of a plot. In this day of content saturation, it s expected that a new series or miniseries will grab you with something big and gobsmacking in its opening eps or you ll just move on to the next thing, and the first few eps of The Plot Against America were mostly about families sitting around talking politics. My advice now that all six episodes are available to stream on HBO: Go back and stick with it through the end; it s a slow burn but when it gets to its back half, The Plot Against America is one of the most powerful things HBO has put out in years. Like the Philip Roth novel on which it s based — which tells the dual tales of aviator Charles Lindbergh s fictionalized rise to the presidency and embrace of the German Nazi party, and how that impacts the lives of a New Jersey Jewish family — the series is complex and meticulously laid out, its deliberate pace matching the slow and insidious rise of anti-Semitism in its version of America. Winona Ryder and Zoe Kazan give standout performances as two sisters with very different views on the direction the country is taking, but the series belongs to the kids, especially to Azhy Robertson as the family s youngest son, and his friend and neighbor Seldon, played by Jacob Laval. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: HBOCommitment: 6 hours (six-part limited series)Making the Cut: Season 1 (2020) 67% (Amazon Prime)After 16 years on the widely successful series, Project Runway, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn walked away. Looking for a fresh start, the duo created their own fashion competition show, partnered with Amazon Studios, and have a new catch phrase, Making the Cut. While the conceit of finding a new designer from a batch of unknowns is the same, the show is definitely a fresh take on the genre. The emphasis this time is not only on talent, but on identifying each designers’ brand and ability to create a business that will attract customers. Each week, the designers are tasked with timed, thematic challenges and must produce two looks: a “runway look” and an “accessible look, and the winning “accessible look” is available each week for purchase on the Making the Cut Amazon store. Currently all winning looks (to date) are sold out! The production quality is amazing, as they travel to Paris and Tokyo for design inspiration. Also contributing is judge Naomi Campbell, who is basically the Simon Cowell of the group. She’s blunt, honest, but also helpful. – Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of Production Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video (and here is a link to the store)Commitment: Approx. 10 hours (across 10 episodes; season finale is April 24)Rake 100% (ABC Australia/Netflix)(Photo by ©Acorn TV/Australian Broadcasting Corp. / Courtesy: Everett Collection)If you’re looking for something off the beaten track, then Australia’s Rake is a perfect binge for you. Richard Roxburgh plays Cleaver Greene, a sharp-as-a-tack criminal defense barrister whose self-destructive streak often threatens to derail is personal and professional lives. Cleaver is a rake, yes, but one that we love: each episode a little bit of goodness peeks through as he defends the kind of alleged criminals most would reject while also trying to repair relationships with those he truly loves. The cinematography is nothing to write home about, but the storytelling and dialogue are magnificent, and Roxburgh is electric in the role. The comedy and tragedy of Cleaver Greene is downright Shakespearian at times, and good luck if you think you can watch only one episode in a sitting. – Lucy Bruckner, ProducerWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 40 hours (40 episodes across five seasons)Merlin 85% (BBC)(Photo by Nick Briggs/©BBC America/courtesy Everett Collection)In these strange times, a nostalgia binge can sometimes soothe the savage beast. Have a whole family of little savages? Merlin offers wholesome escapism, and its availability on Netflix makes it a convenient option to entertain families with five seasons worth of jaunty adventure. Some material may be too scary for the youngest of the family, but the fantastical bromance about warlock Merlin (Colin Morgan) and Camelot’s Prince Arthur (Bradley James) as young men battling monsters, fighting for justice, and looking for love holds a universal appeal. Angel Coulby appears as Gwen, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Anthony Head as Uther, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt voices Kilgharrah the Dragon. The series also features a who’s-who of international talent as secondary and guest stars, including Asa Butterfield, Santiago Cabrera, MacKenzie Crook, Liam Cunningham, Charles Dance, Warwick Davis, Tom Ellis, and on. Tune in with your preteens and teens to make the day’s headlines magically disappear. – Debbie Day, Sr. TV EditorWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 47 hours (across five seasons)The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (Netflix)Wholesome. Silly. Light on drama. Heavy on fun. Based on a Shonen Jump manga series, the series centers on  Saiki Kusuo, a high school student who was born with a seemingly unlimited number of supernatural powers. After learning as a child that using his abilities in public only causes him trouble, he distances himself from his classmates, and resolves to never again use his abilities in front of people — other than his wacky, eccentric parents. But his aloof personality and inadvertent talent for nearly everything make him a magnet for friendship and romance — attention the all-powerful loner wants to avoid! Saiki soon learns that not even the strongest of superpowers can thwart the perils of high school. Paced like a series of comic strips, this show is full of absurd plot lines that will crack you up, and characters so charmingly silly, you can’t help but love them. – Tyler Lorenz, Media CoordinatorWhere to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 20 hours (across 50 episodes)Note: The above trailer is for Saiki s sequel series, Reawakened. Dead Set: Miniseries (2008) 92% (E4/Netflix)(Photo by © Zeppotron / Courtesy: Everett Collection)Before he created Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker gifted us with this horror flick/reality TV mashup that stems from a brilliantly simple premise: What would happen to the people in the Big Brother house if a zombie apocalypse broke out on the outside? The metaphor that plays out in the series can feel a tad overdone — the folks watching reality TV, and the folks featured in it, are just like zombies! — but it s smartly written, frequently hilarious, and often very, very scary. The performances are all great, too; look out for a young Riz Ahmed in one of his earliest TV roles. Interestingly, I was reminded to rewatch the series after hearing Brooker on the Scriptnotes podcast; in an episode devoted to how writers were handling the current pandemic, Brooker noted the similarities between the setup for Dead Set and news reports in March about the German cast of Big Brother being told of the unfolding Coronavirus pandemic out in the real world. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: Netflix,Commitment: Approx. 2.5 hours (across 5 episodes)Check out our regular April Binge Guide. Thumbnail image: Nick Briggs/©BBC America, © Zeppotron, Michele K. 3.60.2 0月喜迎When Mike Flanagan dropped his television adaptation of Shirley Jackson s The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix in 2018, the horror series became a hit for the streamer.Telling the story of the traumatized Crain family — played by Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Timothy Hutton, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Victoria Pedretti, Kate Siegel, Elizabeth Reaser, and Michiel Huisman — the show explored the impact of trauma and grief as each family member evolved over the years. And as they returned to their childhood home to face the ghosts of their past and the demons of their present, The Haunting of Hill House, Certified Fresh with a 93% Tomatometer score on 96 reviews, impressed critics and horror fans alike. It s been two years, and Flanagan has returned with most of his crew  for The Haunting of Bly Manor. The new installment in the Haunting anthology franchise also features newcomers, including Amelia Eve, T Nia Miller, Rahul Kholi, Tahirah Sharif, Amelie Bea Smith, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. This new series story adapts Henry James gothic novella The Turn of the Screw, an 1898 ghost story that follows a young governess who watches over an orphaned brother and sister at the haunted Bly Manor in Essex, England. The majority of Flanagan s story takes place in 1987, but still explores issues of love, loss, and the soul-stirring grief that follows. But how will the season s core group of friends — or, its chosen family, — chart a new narrative course for the anthology? And what s with those dolls? The cast behind season 2 of Netflix s hit horror-drama spoke with Rotten Tomatoes recently and teased a handful of ghostly goodies. 1.  It s About Ghosts, New Connections, and Escaping the Past(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)In The Turn of the Screw, a young governess looks after two troubled kids. The Haunting of Bly Manor tells the story of au pair Dani Clayton (Pedretti), who arrives at the manor excited to take on this new job and hoping to start a new life.  Dani first found herself just being born and brought up in a place where she doesn t really fit in where she can t be fully herself, Pedretti explains. And so she escapes that environment seeking something for herself, seeking real fulfillment. She shows up, and meets these two children that have been abandoned after dealing with incredibly traumatizing and stressful experiences.  Trauma can act as a ghost in art and life, and Dani s arrival to Bly Manor doesn t help her run from her past — instead, it forces her to face her demons head-on.2. There s a Soul Family At Its Center(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Bly Manor s central family will look a bit different from its predecessor s. In Flanagan s Hill House, we saw trauma slowly fracture what was once a strong family unit; the new series flips the script a bit and shows how similar wounds can connect people from different walks of life in an unlikely community. These people, they ve all had traumatic experiences with their blood family, or they don t have any family, Miller, who plays Bly Manor s housekeeper Hannah Grose, explains. Actually, the love there is true, it s real, and it s their soul family. And sometimes soul families in real life, modern life, actually carry us through far more than our biol

Seminal NBC comedy The Office premiered 15 years ago to, well, mixed reviews.
